Did you sit around for 24 hours and just keep switching it back to the wash screen? Its changing to the grey screen every 20 minutes. :(
No, I've never had image retention like you do.
seakwizdom 05-24-06, 03:02 PM No, I've never had image retention like you do.
So you are pretty sure that it is , in fact, IR and not burn in. I stayed up for about 14 hours doing the screen wash thing, then i got tired and had to shut off the tv and take a nap. Now I am back up and going to start it back up again. Should I already be seeing a difference? Can I just watch tons of Varied Dvds/HD TV etc to accomplish the same thing? I appreciate your help, It's just difficult to not use the tv for 24 hours when I just got it.

Check it and see if the IR is gone (it really should be).

Its still there, I can barely see it on the lightest yellow screen but its still there. Its definitely less noticeable now, should I keep running it for another 10 hours till its gone? Can I just watch the tv regularly now and it will eventually go away? Will it always be there?

Watch only full screen programs with a contrast setting of 25. Also turn the power save mode to save2.
seakwizdom 05-24-06, 04:25 PM You are the Best! What is your paypal so i can send you some $$$ for tech support?

So leaving it in on Discovery HD 24/7 will be a/ok?

Perfect.
scottb8888 05-25-06, 11:51 AM I have been a proud owner of a 4360 for about 3 months. I am very happy with the set. I did follow DNice's suggestions for settings.
I have noticed that when we get a power failure, and the power is restored, the TV comes on. How can I stop that?

I just got one but haven't had time to set it up yet as I've been out of town on business.
that power failure ussie is a real problem though.
I travel alot, so it would suck to come home and find my TV had turned itself on for a week - with my luck the last channel would have had a static image...
media 123 05-25-06, 04:27 PM Whenevr I watch a movie in 480i or through a single rca video cable, I see a subtle horizontal band that continuously moves up the screen. I tested this out on 3 different dvd players, with 2 different cables, although i wouldn't call either cable "high quality." When I watch over the air HD or 480p material, there is no band, even though I'm using the same dvd player and cable. Has anyone else ever experienced this effect? Is there a solution?
Thank you - ethan

Almost sounds like a grounding issue. Of course I would think you would see that with OTA as well.
Have you tried using a better video connection - at least svideo?
TommmyJ 05-25-06, 06:15 PM Schteevie,
if you set it up in the menu, when no buttons are pushed or functions used the Plasma will automatically turn off after 3 hours. It will also shut off if there is no signal present for a certain amount of time(not sure how long off hand). I guess if it went off due to power loss and these power off settings were disabled it could remain on. Not sure what the default settings are though.
drsiebling 05-25-06, 11:36 PM Here's another ISF-related pic for all of you... as you can see, the calibration really gets everything nicely in line. The "before calibration" readings are with my 1130 set to D-Nice's settings.

There are setting that control this on a 4360? Several times we have had the TV come on in the middle of the night when we have had a power outage. Maybe a UPS would help the short breaks in power?
TommmyJ 05-26-06, 09:25 AM Yes, under Power control in the menu. No signal off(if no signal is present for 15 minutes) and no operation off(if no functions are used for 3 hours). The tv would still come on with these options enabled but for either 15 minutes or 3 hours depending if there was a signal.

Sweet - looks like it really made a difference. I know those settings from D-Nice were pretty good too!
RKRocha 05-26-06, 03:27 PM A couple of questions for the expert owners of this bad boy.
1. Can I buy the PDA-H02 cable from other than Pioneer? I need longer than the 3m included.
2. What are your thoughts on purchasing a floor model, less than 100hrs use for $4K even? Yes, I know the default is never, ever 'round here, but is 4k reasonable for this situation.
Thanks
RR

Yes, a longer cable can be purchased cheaper than the Pioneer - do a thread search on this as I know a reputable vendor was mentioned.
Floor model - tough one as it has probably been on torch mode the whole time. I'd check it thoroughly for IR or burn in before considering it. If you had a generous return policy for 30 days, that should give you enough time to check it out. Personally, I probably wouldn't, but that is a good price.

Thanks for the response. I'm in search for a New one right now. Figure the savings wont be worth it in the long run.
kbuckner007 05-26-06, 04:12 PM You can get a brand new one from an authorized dealer online. All are under that 4k. You will also get free shipping and some offer 3 year extended warranty. Go to pioneer's website and look at the 20 internet authorized dealers and you will get a good deal. I would stay away from the floor model. My opinion because I got a brand new one for that price.
kbuckner007 05-26-06, 04:13 PM I bought mine from beyondplasma.com, also there is plasma.com and they offer free warranties.
media 123 05-26-06, 05:56 PM Does any one else get a slight buzzing from the plasma pabnel itself (not the media box) on the 5060? It happens forr me when there are white screens or brighter screens rather than darker ones. Is this normal?
Ducky990 05-26-06, 10:05 PM I just bought the 4360 and I was wondering if anyone could point me to a web site or some other source to help me calibrate my new baby. Sorry if this is a repeat question, but this thread is too long to read. Thanks!
standard141 05-27-06, 07:25 PM yeah id like to know as well ducky however i have had the panel for about 3 or 4 months so far and its great. the only problem i have is that i cant disable to info bar which is always popping up causing image retention which could eventually lead to a burn in! its a pain in the ass is there anyway to get rid of that annoying popup when you switch channels????

Yes, it is normal.
selborne 05-28-06, 07:53 AM Yes, it is normal.
Go into the power menu on the 5060 and set it for "Save 1".
On my panel that decreased the buzz by about 90% with only a miniscule decrease in brightness. Methinks that setting may also help decrease
burn-in and IR.
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 03:46 PM Got a stupid question, I am having problems getting the zoom off of the television. I have the 5060, I have went to full, set my cable box to 16:9 but still always in zoom. Missing part of the screen. I have a 32" lcd with the same cable box and do not have this problem.
thanks

I think "full" does still slightly zoom, just a little, tiny bit. I know that "natural wide" does as well.
Check the 4:3 setting and see if there is no zoom. I think the button on the remote is labelled "size". (My memory may be borked since I am at work)
Also, what cable box do you have?
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:25 PM This is driving me crazy, why can't i figure this out. All I want is the SD to be stretched to fit the 16:9 screen and the HD should fit without being stretched. It for some reason is cutting off the screen on both sides like it is in zoom always. Going Crazy
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:27 PM It can't stretch this much though or zoom this much. It cuts off heads and the sides of people. I have teh scientific atlanta 8300HD
thanks for you reply

Also, the display size setting is remembered per resolution, so say you set a 480i channel to "wide". All 480i channels will default to "wide" until you change it. If you set a 1080i channel to "full", all 1080 channels will be at "full", and if you switch to a 480i channel it will still be "wide".
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:29 PM When I put the 4:3 on the bars come up on the sides but the picture is still within the bars. It looks like it would fit but the bars come up with a picture inside the bars

I hate to say this, but it sounds like a cable box setting problem to me. I dont have the 8300hd. I know others here do, and there was a link to the SA manuals here that D-NICE posted if you search. I just have never used the SA boxes to know how they settings should be.
I know if you search this thread, some tips will come up.

That is a bar color setting on the Pioneers. If it is turned on, then the image you are watching is displayed black&white in the bars of 4:3 material. Its sort of an image retention guard. Some like it, some dont. You can turn it off and just have grey bars if you would rather. I just stretch everything, like I know you are trying to do.
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:33 PM Like right now I see half of the Discovery HD logo on the right side of the screen. I am using the box til Thursday when I get my cable Card. It is just frustrating that I can't figure this out.
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:35 PM I have the same box upstairs and I am going to switch it out to see if it is the box not laying it out on the screen. Thanks alot Maybe i can get this fixed

Take a look at this post about the SA boxes (same one I referred to earlier)
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7549311&&#post7549311
the link to the pdf manual appears to be broken, but you get the idea. You should be able to find it through SA's website and follow the setup instructions in it.
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 04:54 PM GOT IT!!!!! once I changed the channel to a SD source and back to the HD source it changed the setting I set. Was sticking on one channel and not letting it set. Thanks alot for your time
Have a good one
dogcatcher 05-30-06, 05:11 PM Any word yet if they will have the rebate for the 5060 on July 1st as they did for the 5050?
kbuckner007 05-30-06, 08:52 PM I bought Avia and the DVE should i use both. Does this calibrate it only for dvd or does it do it for regular viewing. I have never used it before and am waiting for it in the mail. I have put 4 hours on my 5060 I just got today. Really is remarkable how nice the picture is and even after I turned down everything even below D-Nice's settings. Just wondering how these dvds work
Ok, this is somewhat a cross post from a Satellite forum as I don't know if the issue is from the SAT box, or the TV it self. Here it goes:
Hi guys,
I’m going crazy here trying to figure out the issue is.. I am experiencing the issues with my 50” Plasma (Pioneer Elite PRO-1130HD).
Here is what’s going on:
Whenever I’m watching SD channels, and sometimes HD channels I have a continual distortion specifically in white colors where there is fast motion. Examples are: peoples teeth, ending credits/fast moving white graphics, when changing the channels manually (i.e. entering 1-2-5), and scrolling up/down the program guide. The issue I’m having is slightly hard to describe, but imagine a zebra and the white lines that go along its body. This is what is happening to me on white images. A full white image is being ‘hatched’ with black lines. For example if I change a channel manually, as I’m entering the numbers there is breakup with black lines in the actual numbers, sometimes it happens to the entire range as I enter, and sometimes it just happens to the last 2 numbers. I have illustrated the issue in the following image:
http://www.gwpdevelopment.com/other/untitled.JPG
As you can see, basically imagine entering the channel 125 quickly and having the black lines go through it. I changed the color of the text obviously because white wouldn’t work, but I hope you guys get the idea. If you guys need any other further clarification, feel free to ask. Thanks!
kbuckner007 05-31-06, 01:06 AM Sounds like to me it is your Sat feed. I get that with my lcd when i go component. HDMI I have no problems. Try switching to cable or get another sat box. I don't think it is your tv

What do you have PureCinema mode set to? Sometimes I see things like this when I am watching an HD movie and say a weather ticker comes up for severe weather. The ticker is not 24fps like the movie, so Purecinema Adv (auto detect 24fps) gets confused. The result is some deinterlacing artifacts.
I have Purecinema set to off for all 480i content, ADV for HD content.
edit:
Zoinks!! Never mind, what you are describing I have not seen before... The thing I was talking about only applies to text. Never to any image or part of an image, only text. The old 5G's had the text issue a lot. It has almost (just certain specific cases) been completely eliminated in the 6G's.

kbuckner007 05-31-06, 01:00 PM I got my 5060 yesterday around 10am. Already put about 15 hours on it. I have to say HBO is perfect for breaking the tv in as well. Just stretch the 4:3 screen and the SD picture is unreal how well this looks.

congratz to you!! :)
Unfortunately I dont have cable in my apartment...should have it in 2-3 months....
I will watch only DVDs on it. Planning for Finding nemo (178:1) for tonight!
dchristie 05-31-06, 03:37 PM Supposedly my 5060 will arrive tomorrow. Talk about anxiety, I've been through the ringer waiting for TV's since December of last year. Started out with a Panny 500u, waited two months to find out Panny wouldn't fill the order. Then I decided on the Pioneers and did my usual shopping and debating between the 1130 and the 5060 until I decided on the 5060. Once I ordered that from TVA then that supply went scarce as well. A month and a half later supposedly its showing up tomorrow, so yeah, I'm a little anxious.
A quick question, are the settings from D-nice for the 1130 Elite the same as I should use for break-in on the 5060? I'm praying I don't have any pixel issues with this set and will baby this thing on break-in.
Thanks ahead of time .
dchristie...
:) I'm in Miami too!
Elemental1 05-31-06, 04:11 PM Some screenshots would be nice when you get it set up. :)
When you get cable, I sure would like to see how SD looks on it.
At the stores when I was shopping, I was not impressed with the SD.
I know it's a good plasma and maybe you could show it off :D
kbuckner007 05-31-06, 04:42 PM Here is a pic of HBO on my 5060HD.
kbuckner007 05-31-06, 04:44 PM As you can see SD looks better than the HD on my 32" LCD. I am completely impressed with how good SD looks on this set. I will probably keep HBo for good now.

He posted some specific 5060 settings in this thread also. a couple searches should bring them up quickly.
And no, the 5060 settings are not exactly the same as the 1130 settings, as the 1130's have a few extra options to adjust that the 5060's do not.
wow...amazin shot there!
Luckyyou, you have already set it up! I will need to wait for my father to coem tonight and help me mount it on the salamander cabinet....
as soon as I am done I'll post some photos!
kbuckner007 05-31-06, 04:51 PM I got my 5060 yesterday and I had also been waiting along time.(November 21st to be exact) This Tv has no dead pixels and is unreal in HD but comparing to SD on others this does a better job to me on SD. I am keeping mine on HBO to break it in, stretching it to fill the screens. Have watched it for around 18 hours already. You will not be dissapointed whatsoever, glad I went with this instead of the others that broke on me.
Thank you for the help Braham....

How do you like the Salamander cabinet? Did you buy it online? Are the mounting brackets from them as well? I'm looking to get the same cabinet minus the mount but with the riser feet..
The Cabinet is fantastic......incredibly solid! This is my third salamander cabinet and I will buy from them anytime! The finish is superb....the look is amazing....and the solidity is great!
Only thing with them is that it takes a bit of practice to build them!
My 1130HD is hanging happily on the TV mount.....and it looks so sexy!

bshplt, are you using your set only for DVD's or do you have any service like cable or SAT hooked up? I'm signing up with DirecTV, hopefully the SD will be decent. Curios to see how the locals in Miami are through DirecTV.
MaliciousBraham 06-01-06, 01:10 PM I just bought a 4360 and have had about used for 10 hours..
it was recently left on for 2-3 with no signal input (ie digi box and reciever were off - but not standbuy)
will this affect the picture/phospurs at all? Did I just screw my self with my new toy?
Lemme know, not worried, but being cautios...
I have left my 1130 on overnight with no input (black screen) and it caused no issues whatsoever.
It is nothing to worry about.
Thanks D-Nice, appreciate it!!!

...yup, only DVDs for now. I'm trying to find a solution for my building to get DirectTV directly from them instead of using a third party company, which is very fishy, among other things!
seakwizdom 06-01-06, 02:55 PM Do the majority of DVD's (widescreen dvd's) have to be zoomed in order to fill the entire screen? I am trying to find some dvd's where I don't have to zoom in order to get a full picture. Only ones so far I have are : Spiderman and Nemo in my entire collection of 85 dvd's :( Maybe I am doing something wrong on the DVD setup end?

Depends on the aspect ratio of the dvd and whether or not is is anamorphic or "enhanced" for 16x9 TVs.
Some of the few widescreen DVDs that aren't anamorphic or enhanced might have to be zoomed.
Most 1.85:1 or less anamorphic or enhanced DVDs will fill your screen without zooming. Any ratio wider than that; eg. 2.35:1; would need to be zoomed in order to fill the screen. Of course you would crop some left and right in order to miss the black bars. Probably a good thing to do during break in, but afterwards enjoy the move like it was intended.
ahhhh, there's nothing better then some Corrs gorgeousness to keep the Elite happy, while breaking in....

JAGCGator 06-01-06, 10:02 PM This is one of my biggest concerns... you see how bad SD programming looks on most HDTVs. Can you tell me how non-HD digital channels (e.g. DirecTV or Comcast Digital network SD programs) look on the PDP-5060HD?
Thanks a lot!
dchristie 06-02-06, 09:21 AM Well, my 5060 showed up yesterday evening and I spent the whole rest of the evening and on into the wee hours of the night getting the TV set up and working. No dead pixels that I'm aware of and I'm very happy about that.
I'm running at D-Nice's break-in settings for now, and only have some cheapo rabbit-ears and my Onkyo DVD player connected. I created the break-in DVD but my player doesn't seem to play it, but I've found an alternative for me. My DVD player is a 6-disc carousel that has a "chain mode", so I've filled in all 6 discs with the 6-disc box set of Band of Brothers and it seems to be looping fine at the end of the discs.
Questions:
-The picture quality on the DVDs are only "OK". I see quite a bit of graininess to it, especially in dark settings. I guess it could be the DVDs themselves, but I don't think so. DVD player is connected via component cables. My DVD player is not an up-converting player. Could this be the source of the image quality? I bought the DVD player not too long ago, but if it's a substantial gain going to an up-converting player I'll bite the bullet and get one.
-DirecTV comes this afternoon, hopefully the install goes smooth and I'll be up and running for tonights Heat-Pistons game. What I'm wondering is if this is a bad idea to watch while in the early break-in period? I'm worried about the static ESPN logos and score boards being on the screen for 3-4 hours. Should I worry about it, or is this over-kill paranoia? I just want to be very careful.
Thanks!! :D
kbuckner007 06-02-06, 10:56 AM SD watching on the 5060HD is great. Mine are crystal clear this is hands down what I am impressed most with the set.
guys....how do I see how many hours I have on the 1130HD?
Thank you.

-Biscuit- 06-05-06, 03:49 PM Have my 4360 set per the recommendations for the burn-in period. Also, next Tuesday I'm paying a guy $350 to spend 4 hours profesionally calibrate the set.
This should be money well spent. Does anyone have any experience with this?
platypus 06-05-06, 04:54 PM Can any of you xx60/xx61 owners confirm whether these displays have 1080p24 input capability? The upcoming xx70 panels tout this feature in their specs, and I'm trying to decide if it's worth holding out for. Thanks.

D-NICE, can you touch this info up for me....
I ended up getting the PDP-5060HD, and it should be arriving in the next 6 days. I saw these settings posted, which I plan to use with the breakin DVD. Someone posted here they were going to run it for 100 hrs? I thought I had read it was like 200 hrs for the burn in? Can you elaborate on this please, I want to make sure I do this right.
The other question reference calibration. Has anyone had any experience using AVIA DVD to setup their 5060 or 4360 ? I know the Elite have much more options for customizing. Does the 5060 still have the required adjustment menus to correct the picture quality?
Also, has anyone used SpiderTV ? I've heard great results on the Elite version, but can anyone elaborate if the 5060 has enough settings to satisfy the the spider system. I know its like around 200 bucks, but I don't want to buy the darn thing, and then find out some of the settings it wants me to adjust are not available on the 5060. Is the SpiderTV complicated to use ??
I'd apreciate any info anyone can assist.
MIKE

Panel hours are located in the panel factory menu of the SM. You will need to visit the display calibration section of AVS for instructions on how to access the SM.

I always do my "run-in" for 200 hours. Others only do it for 100. You can choose how many hours you want to do it, but please do at least 100.
TIP: If you really want to "tame" your panel for the brightest white and blackest blacks, access the SM.....access the panel factory menu.....access the mask setup menu....select the CMB 08 test pattern and let it run for 200-250 hours (this is only for the "run-in" time frame).

Hello, Mike -
I have the Elite 1130 and the SpyderTV. I used the Spyder to calibrate a Dell 50", but the Dell set was awful, so I ended up returning it and getting the Elite. I've been so happy with the Elite that I haven't felt any urgency in using the Spyder on it yet, but I'll make a point of doing it this weekend and will let you know how it goes.
As far as the SpyderTV is concerned, it is very easy to use, but a bit labor intensive in that you must follow prompts from the laptop computer and use the DVD remote to switch test patterns a lot. I've run it about 10 times on the Dell and it always seemed to take about 30+ minutes to go through the routine. It wouldn't be very good for doing the fine detailed adjustments, but for basic color, tint, contrast and brightness, it's really hard to beat. All those parameters are interdependant, and I could never quite get it right by eyeballing it (subjective adjustment). SpyderTV allows a true objective adjustment and the result was far superior than anything I could have done by eye alone. It did a great job with the Dell, but the Dell had so many other problems it went back anyways.

that is valid for the 1130HD as well? :)I mean the CMB 08 test pattern...?
Thanks Kidziti for your response, I think it will do great on the Elite. I just hope the 5060HD has enough settings to fullfill the adjustments requestd by SpyderTV.
D-NICE thanks for the response, just to recap here. Your advising instead of using the Burnin DVD which I think downloaded a while back which was posted here that switches between several different colors I should not use that? Instead use this CMB 08 test pattern from the Standard Menu? And when you say Run-in your referring to Burn-in time correct. I'm still a little green in this technology sorry. Now can I just leave the TV running on this pattern for those 200+ hours... it won't go into a sleep mode or shut off or anything will it? Cause I dont have 200 hrs to stand infront of a TV at one time hehehe.
Thanks for all your help guys... I just bought a Sony DVP-NS75H today to go with the TV. I know its not top of the line stuff, but I'm hoping it will still perform well with the 5060.
MIKE
a_ok2me 06-06-06, 02:05 AM If you have the Ant A or B inputs connected to a cable/antenna line, all you have to do is switch to the Antenna input to use them.
The tuner setup menu in the display menu is only available when a tuner input is actively selected. If you do not have anything plugged into A or B, then the input will still work, and the tuner setup menu will still be active as long as you select the antenna input, but the screen will be static because obviously nothing is connected to the A/B inputs.
The tuner setup menu will be grey-ed out when you have another input selected other than Ant A or B, because they obviously are not tuners, but just inputs.
That answer everything? :D
I just got my 1130 - finally - after so many months on backorder. It's just in time for the new generation displays to come out. What a joke. In any case, I thought this thing is supposed to have "Dual NTSC tuners and ATSC tuner". All I have is cable connected to tuner A, but I cannot get dual pictures in split/PIP.
With my old WEGA, I can connect one cable line and still get dual pictures.
Am I doing something wrong? I'm guessing I need another cable line into tuner B.
OutGolfn 06-06-06, 07:26 AM With concerning the Pio 4360, has anyone used an hdmi cable and seen a difference in video/audio on this plasma? I am currently using component/rca's to the tv. I was wondering if I would see a improvement in audio from using the hdmi cable?
Brian

Yes, just use the CMB 08 test pattern for 200+ hours. The panel will not go into sleep mode unless you enable those functions in the options menu.
I'm thinking of picking up either a Pro 1130 or a 5060HD before the world cup starts. Does anybody have any opinion on how well Sports Action looks on these models?

What about burn in when watching TV folks? What features does the Pioneer Elite line have to combat image rentention ie. TV logos? The world cup is coming up very shortly so you can imagine that the networks will keep their logos in the same place throughout an entire match and I'm worried that this could effect a Plasma.....

I will be setting my 4360 up next week and haven't decided on a DVD player yet, so this means I can break it in with out the DVD..?
I will have the rogers SA8300 HD box, so I'll probably be watching some regular TV as well - I'll just be sure it is full screen.
Am I understanding the "break-in" procedure correctly?
extra question:
What is the best hook up option - HDMI or component for the SA8300 on the 4360?
thnx
Especially interested in anyone running the new Oppo 970, 480i HDMI into their Pio.
Comments welcome!
Thanks.

Action378 06-06-06, 03:38 PM I have a question about burn-in. I currently owner of a PDP-5040HD and over the weekend I upgraded to the HD TiVo HR10-250 DVR. Thanks in advance.

Either one could be a problem depending on the content you watch. If you are watching a dark movie with grey bars, you will get some Image Retention of the bars. If you watch a bright movie with black bars, you will possibly get IR in the picture, none in the bars.
The safest way is to stretch all 4:3 content and not use bars at all. If you must use bars, use black and keep the brightness/contrast as low as you can stand it until the break-in period is over. Then up the contrast/brightness after the break-in and dont worry about burn in or image retention at all.
I have probably thousands of hours (since Oct 05) on my 1130 now and I watch lots of 4:3 content broadcast on HD channels (black bars) and have no issues with IR at all. On a new plasma I would be careful though for the breakin period.

Correct - there are multiple tuners but you can't drive them both from a single input. Also, the ATSC tuner is only on Input A. From the info you have given it appears that running another cable line into Input B will give you what you are looking for wrt split/PIP.

Why whenever I go to Tweeter I'm always underwelmed by the signal they have going into the Elites or Pure Vision. At Best Buy the guy had analog cabling and there was noise all over the picture but even at Tweeter I was underwelmbed by the picture on the 1130HD and 930. They were showing HD Net.

Can anyone pm how to exit the test pattern.

The analog cabling that you see at bestbuy is actually showing HD via firefly, the tuner is on channel 14.1, 15.1 etc.
If you have an ATSC tuner built in to the set you can get HD via 75 ohm cabling.
Most of the errors I see in bestbuy on the sets are camera errors.
D-Nice, thanks again for your assistance once again.
I just wanted to take a quick second also, to thank everyone on here for there assistance. I know, when all fails most of us come here for assistance or advice. And it is amazing to see some of the dedication that people have here. I don't want to focus this directly on one person, I've received advise from many, but D-Nice has been extremely helpful to me every time I had a question... even when I called him D-LINK hehehe, he still answered :)
Again this is just a Big Thanks to everyone that comes here to assist other members. I personally appreicate that great assistance you guys give.
MIKE.
P.S. Just a few more days and my first plasma "5060" will arrive. Extremely Thrilled here !!!
Does anybody know necessarily why the Elites weigh so much less than say the Panasonics 600's? if you look at the shipping weight on the Panasonics they are so much more heavier.
For instance.
weight without stand 50 600U
123.5 lbs. (56 kg)
weight of a Pro 1130
70.1 lbs
The media receiver only weighs 10 lbs so why is there such a huge difference in the weights?

You need to get into the SM and turn that test pattern off. You will know it is of when you see Mask OFff in the lower left hand corner.

The technology inside the Pioneer is more advance than the Panasonic.
To put it in simpler terms, think of an old Soviet union fighter jet compared to a F-15 or F-16.

ouch! :D
Not trying to put the Soviet Union down ;)
I was trying to say that Soviet jets were always know to be "clunkier" and less sophisticated compared to Western jets.
So then it's possible then that I truely haven't seen the 930HD in it's splendor then and that I'm underestimating it's potential?

The big retail chains are some of the worst places to compare television sets, no matter what type of technology they are (dlp, plasma, etc). The environment is absolutely nothing like what you have in your home.
A better bet is to find a smaller custom a/v retailer that has the pioneers in store. They are always more concerned with picture quality than any of the big chains. Rule of thumb: If they wont let you touch the remote and play with things yourself, why are you even there?
Sometimes they have good prices, and I guess thats ok then to buy from them, but I prefer to use shops that actually care about the customer, not just about the employee discount.
Do a dealer search on the pioneer website and see if there are any local specialty shops in your area. In my town, Circuit City is the best of the big chains for Plasma's, as they are all on a single wall, and all the lights on that wall are dimmed. They also let you play with the remotes. Their pricing isnt the best though at this particular store. Your area may be different. I bought my Elite through Tweeter, but my local store is good about working with repeat customers :)
Just about to break the 1000 hour break-in period and must say that the picture on the Pioneer is still the best I've seen on a tv of this size. Watched Star Wars in high def over the weekend and was just blown away. It was nice to see that HBO did'nt crop the picture like they normally do.
Anyway, I've uploaded pics so that people can get an idea what games and movies look like on it. It actually looks much better in person. The pictures are just me with an old 2.1mp Canon Powershot A20 camera standing in front of the tv without the lights on and with the flash off.

ssabripo,
What mount is that you're using? Looks like an articulating mount. What's the measurement that the back of the display sits from the face of the wall? I just picked up a 4360 last night and I'm pondering the best layout for our smallish room. A mount that hangs on the wall and has the ability to swivel the display to the right may be just what I'm looking for. Or I may just go with an unwanted Elite swivel stand and table-top mount it.
I was reasonably impressed with the picture out of the box. I set the picture mode to movie, and then dialed down the contrast (25), brightness (-5), and sharpness (-5) a bit more. Black levels are not as good as what I'm used to (Pioneer Elite Pro-730HDi), but the RP-CRT no longer fits where it needs to go in the new house. Colors were amazing! SD picture quality was noticeably better than that on the Sharp 32" LCD (D7U) we have in our bedroom. I'm also very pleased with the screen size. I was debating the 50" but had concerns that it would overwhelm the room. Our viewing distance is 9ft and the 43" seems just about right.
Any other tips for a new owner?

try some of D-Nice's picture settings (browse back the last few pages). The 6G pioneers have black levels that far exceed any rear projection unit. Once you have your picture settings dialed in, there just is no comparison, imo. You can try any 5060 settings also.

I'm using the Omnimount UCL-X canteliver mount...it's more expensive than your regular wall mount, but it is definitely worht it as it gives you flexibility to go in/out, swivel it clockwise/CCW, and also tilt it towards/away....basically all directions except up and down.

I got it a a pretty decent price from J&R ;)
I spent about 5-6 hours doing the install as it required a lot of reinforcement

Thanks for the tip. Some of the settings I have are even lower than those suggested by D-Nice, so I'll make the adjustments accordingly.
FWIW, I had a 4340 about a year and a half ago that I ultimately returned because I just wasn't all that impressed, especially with the black levels. Seems like the Pio displays have come a long ways since then. Plasma buzz is also much less audible on this unit vs. the old 4340.
ssabripo, thanks for the lead on the mount. I'll look into it.
NemoZorro 06-07-06, 03:57 PM Thanks to those posting pics; it encourages those of us (or should I say discourages!) who are still waiting to take delivery. Really nice shots!
And I too am very thankful for all the good advice on this thread and forum. I have a very large notepad.txt file with tips and settings thanks to all of you.
a_ok2me 06-08-06, 12:02 AM The technology inside the Pioneer is more advance than the Panasonic.
To put it in simpler terms, think of an old Soviet union fighter jet compared to a F-15 or F-16.Are you sure? Because when it comes to audio components, the heavier the better.
lordofgain 06-08-06, 12:58 AM So then it's possible then that I truely haven't seen the 930HD in it's splendor then and that I'm underestimating it's potential?
Absolutely! I will even go so far as to partially agree with Malicious that the big retail are most certainly not the "best" atmosphere to view the equipment with.
My 4361 looks way better in my home with controllable lighting as opposed to the lighting in BB. Although I must say that they are trying. The newer stores that have platform skus i.e. 4360, 5060 are using no overhead lighting in the HT area. Also the stores with Magnolia HT in them are definately much better at showcasing the equipment i.e. 930, 1130.
Are you sure? Because when it comes to audio components, the heavier the better.
And that only applies to audio components.
One new tech that Pioneer has over Panasonic is single sided panel driving. What this means is the panel's pixels are drive by one driver instead of having the panel split in half and driven by two drivers like Panasonic plasmas. This reduces wieght significantly and you never have to worry about half of the screen being slightly brighter or darker compared to the other half.

There is no plasma on the planet that can rival the black levels of a good crt rptv. Although I must admit plasmas have come a long way but still are not up to par with CRT's when it comes to black levels. Any experienced and good ISF tech will totally agree with that statement.
jacksonian 06-08-06, 10:11 AM Yeah, it's tough to match that black level where you can't even see the picture :D

The Pioneers are lighter than the equivalent size Panasonics for one simple reason:
6G Pioneers use the pure color filter, which cuts out one whole piece of actual glass inside the display (and is also the reason that the Pioneers are a little better with light refection than other brands). The Panasonics have two actual pieces of glass inside the display. Glass is heavy, hence the weight difference between the two models.
Also, with the external media receiver on the Pioneers, that probably cuts a couple of pounds out of the display as well.

Get your facts straight before posting that stuff. Direct View CRT's are the gold standard, not Rear Projection CRTs. Rear projection crts, like front projection crt's have lousy black level on screen.
Fact.
Since the 930HD is 6G and the 600u's are 2006 models in what way does the 2006 Panny try to improve upon the 930HD? It seems if you're in the market for a 43inch display that the Pioneer can't be beat and the weight difference alone is a significant plus on the Pioneer's side especially if you're considering wall mounting.

I was recently tossing up b/w 43 and 50 sizes but it sure looks to me as though you're not exactly in the 50 inch viewing distance area with that setup. I'd say you're about 9-10 feet away from that wall right? It's about the same distance for my setup but I was dead set on 43 as the largest workable size.

TIP: If you really want to "tame" your panel for the brightest white and blackest blacks, access the SM.....access the panel factory menu.....access the mask setup menu....select the CMB 08 test pattern and let it run for 200-250 hours (this is only for the "run-in" time frame).
Help Please........
I Got my 5060HD in today, and its a beauty... but I need your help please.
I'm trying to follow D-NICE instructions and I got all the settings setup correctly, but I cannot find the CMB 08 test pattern. I do not see any option for this test pattern that is being mentioned. I click the MENU on the remote, but I do not see anything except the options that used for like setting up PICTURE like the color, brightness, contrast, and POWER, OPTIONS, stuff like... but I don't see any option as for this PANEL FACTORY MENU.
I'm looking through the manual, but would sure appreciate any assistance, so I can start this 200 hr "Run-In". I think in a 200 hour frame I should have plenty of time to learn the manual I hope, or atleast the most important parts.
Can anyone cast some light for me please, so I can get things started.

please excuse my bluntness, I dont mean to be rude. If you do not know what the service menu is, you should not be trying to get to it :)
There are millions of ways in the service menu to turn your nice plasma into an expensive brick. And it would probably do a poor job of being a brick. We are not allowed to post how to get into the service menu on this forum. Those instructions are linked in the Calibration forum. But Do Not Screw Around In the Service Menu if You Do Not Know What It Is For!!!
The service menu makes it possible for trained technicians and ISF calibrators to fine tune many aspects of the panel, and apparently there are built in test signals in there. But it is not a place to mess around, as there are many options that if you do not understand them, will potentially kill your display. Most manufacturers will not honor warranties if they can tell you killed your own display by going into a menu you should not be in. Warranties cover product defects, not owner defects.
Just an FYI for anyone interested in what the service menu is and how dangerous it can be.
Again not meant towards any one poster or member in particular. Just a general warning.

The test pattern is in the Service Menu not the regular one. You will need to visit the Display Calibration forum for instructions on how to access the Service Menu.
BEWARE.....If you do not know what you are doing DO NOT access the Service Menu as you can render your panel inoperable.

Are you watching a 5.1 audio channel? The MR will downmix to 2.1. I cant actually recall exactly if there was sound from the sub at all when watching normal stereo feeds.
I know my sub output works fine (1130hd), as my speakers arrived before my receiver did, so I hooked them directly to the MR. But I've had my receiver setup for so long now (my sub is now hooked to to receiver), I cant remember if the sub output on the MR was only active during 5.1 programming.
What source are you watching and how do you have it connected to the MR?

I do not use receiver. I am using pio speekers, and truying to enhance sound with powered M&K sub (250WRMS). Connection is simple:
RCA cable from MR sub pre-out to input on M&K.
Nothing. No sound on any chanell.
I am using TW explorer 3100HD reciver (Input1) Pio dvd recorder DVR-210 (Input2)
and YAMAHA DVD s-2500(Input 3)
I do not have any sound on sub sound independent which source I am using.
I am thinking problem is somwhere in MR. User manual spac.: sub terminal: variable- that mean somwhere on menu option to increase/decrease volume for sub. I can't find anything.
malaugh 06-09-06, 04:39 PM I was wondering if anyone could help. My Elite 1130HD arrives on Tuesday, and I need to buy a TV stand this weekend.
I want to "stealth" my whole AV setup, so it looks like a peice of furniture. I know the screen has the sensor for the remote. My question is, if I send a command for the DVD player from the remote, will the TV pick up the command and send it to the DVD player via the G-Link transmitters? If so, I could buy a stand without glass doors, and have a really cool setup. Also, if anyone has ideas on furniture, please reply. I need something small, but still big enough to fit 4 pieces of electronics boxes: a DVD recorder, the media box, a VCR and a receiver. All the boxes are about 3 inches high.
Thanks

no, the G-link uses the program guide to control external vcr's, dvd recorders, etc, to record programming.
The SR+ feature was designed by Pioneer for this situation, but requires all Pioneer equipment, i.e. pioneer receiver, pioneer dvd player, pioneer display.
If you look at the picture in my sig link, all my equipment is inside the a/v cabinet, and I can control 79avi dvdplayer, 74txvi receiver, 1130hd plasma all by pointing the respective remotes at the plasma on wall. This uses SR+ feature. If you do not have all Pioneer equipment, then there are some aftermarket systems for passing IR info, but it will require you to mount an extra IR receiver somewhere in your room, and also the extra cabling required to go to the individual devices.
I cannot control my comcast dvr box without opening a door on my a/v cabinet so I can point the remote at it. :(
There is a great thread on a/v furninture here in the plasma section.

have you tried changing the audio setting from PCM to Digital and vice versa? I had my cable box delivering audio/video via hdmi to the MR, and then listened to the sound via 2.1 setup. My sub (Mirage S-10) has an auto trigger that powered up the sub as soon as it sees an input signal. Sub was also hooked to the sub-out on the MR.
Well to answer the question I posed to this forum several days ago, a copy of my post to DVD Hardware:
Well, I finally received and hooked up the 970. For some reason, after posting (and waiting for a response) to this and the plasma forum, I couldn't get an answer as to how the 970 performed into the 6th generation Pios. So I pulled the trigger myself and I am pleased to report that running the 970 at 480i HDMI into my Elite 1130, produces the finest dvd picture that I have ever seen on this display (I have tried many of the usual suspects, including the Sony 75/85, Pio 52, Toshiba 4990, a Samsung, along with my venerable old Pio RP91)
The 970 trumps them all - less noise, more detail, greater depth - so far have viewed Toy Story, LOTR, Fifth Element (Superbit), Spiderman, and The Hulk. All looked better than I had ever seen them.
Additionally, although my sound system is not high end, the sound of the Oppo equaled the sound of the Sony (which was a clear improvement over my RP91).
Also, (purists don't read this!) I found the zoom on the Oppo to at least be useable.
The Oppo 970 appears to play all manner of discs, (I have tried R+, R-, RW+ and RW-), and the jpeg picture navigator is also quite useable (along with the Sony, one of the few devices which allows for computer altered jpegs to be played).
Don't like the tray - not the fact that its "flimsy", which I really don't think it is, but the fact that no indentation exists to easily remove the disc - find I have to reach under and pop it up from the bottom.
Both the deck and the remote appear well made and durable.
For me, I finally found "a keeper!" :D

I called Oppo last week and asked them which would be better the 970 or 971 for my PRO-930HD. I was told that since the display has a "good internal scaler" that the 970 would be the better choice. Oppo said the 970 would produce a slighting sharper image plus there isn't any worry about the blocking error bug. I placed my order a few days ago. Now I wait because they are on b/o.
LIY - Did you calibrate your 970 yet? Are you using the settings out of the box or something else? Did you try the upconverting options at all?

Calibrated using Avia. All Oppo setting (sharpness, etc. are at 0). Did not try upconverting options.
Think that you will be very pleased using the Oppo as a 480i HDMI transport into your Pro-930HD!

The 970 cheaper... I tought it was an older model...
Anyway - I got a 971 and will be setting it up along with my PDP-4360 (that has been in the box for a couple weeks as I haven't had time) tommorow!
The 970 is actually Oppo's latest unit. I think it just came out a couple weeks ago. It's less expensive because it doesn't have the Faroudja chip to do the upconverting.
Let us know how you like the 4360/971 combination.

Grrrrrrr. I called Oppo last week and they told me to get the 971!!! (I have an 1130). I inquired about macroblocking, and they said it was a known problem with the panasonic's, but they didn't seem to have much trouble with the Pio's. Given the 50 inch screen size, they said that I would get a better picture with the superior processor in the 971. It is scheduled for delivery tomorrow....and I am left with several questions:
1) Since a pio can process in 10-bit, will I get a better picture if I have an HDMI-HDMI connection (found in the 970, but NOT the 971, which has DVI to HDMI).
2) I remember hearing somewhere that Oppo is scheduled to release an updated version of the 971 (with HDMI, SACD, still with Faroudja, and other improvements) in June/July. Does anybody know anything about this?
3) Do people prefer AVIA or DVE calibration? Where do I get these?
I know it might also be appropriate to post these q's in the DVD forum, but since DVD performance is display specific (and this is the first time I have heard about any Oppo on an Elite chatter), I'll leave it here.
Thanks so much!!
SrPicman 06-11-06, 02:58 PM Any comments out there about a Denon 1720 driving an 1130? I'm letting the 1130 do the scaling/upconverting, etc., since it looked like a better result when first tried it.
Thx,

a_ok2me 06-11-06, 04:59 PM My cat left several nose marks on the screen of my 1130. Maybe it might have melted onto the screen. I tried Formula 410 & soapy water, but can't seem to remove the marks. Formula 410 also left greasy streaks. Fortunately, my cat's claws are also capped in plastic.
#1) Is the screen made of glass? It feels like plastic and could be susceptible to stains.

Murph88 -
You may be better off with the 971 since your display is 50". Oppo told me that there would be very little difference in PQ on my 43". Also, the Faroudja chip may be a little softer looking compared to the chip in the 970 (just what I was told by Oppo) and I prefer as crisp of image as possible. They told me too that the panasonics have more blocking issues then the Pios. This may be partly because there are so may more pany owners out there to report problems. For me less $, HDMI->HDMI, and no macroblocking to worry about was the best choice until we have a winner of HD format.
I haven't found much in the way of Pio display/dvd combos on the forum. Anyone else care to comment on what they've tried and what they found to be the best?

I cannot imagine any nasal discharge from a cat that would melt into plastic or glass. That said, I would not dare put any chemical on the glass (yes, I believe it's glass) other than H2O (water). If water and a little gentle rubbing doesn't do it, your cat needs to go to a vet.
I'd also recommend getting a Rottweiler DVD or something to keep your cat away from the screen.
BTW, I have three nondeclawed cats and just hooked up some Def Tech towers, which must look like dream-come-true scratching posts to these felines. I'm seriously considering nail caps like your cat has. Do they work well?

I'm seriously considering nail caps like your cat has. Do they work well?I ended up buying 3M electronics & office cleaner. It has some alcohol, so it does a better job of removing streaks. It still didn't remove the smear marks. I believe there is a thin layer of plastic covering the glass, so I think it's porous to stains, especially when the heat cooks it in. No big deal when the TV is on, but it's little annoying to see the streaks when it's off.
OT: Your speakers...YIKES. The caps work great. Three or so will fall off every couple of weeks, but a package of 40 caps will last about 3 months if you just cap the front paws.
Schteevie 06-12-06, 12:33 AM The 970 is actually Oppo's latest unit. I think it just came out a couple weeks ago. It's less expensive because it doesn't have the Faroudja chip to do the upconverting.
Let us know how you like the 4360/971 combination.
I don't know if there is a "wrong" way to set it up, but I'll let you guys know how it looks!
I am still confused about how the "image scaler" in the 4360 works, and if it will conflict with the upressing of 971...
I am planning to hook it up with an HDMI cable, and I hope the rest of the set up to get it to upres is not difficult to figure out...
NemoZorro 06-12-06, 01:28 PM My cat left several nose marks on the screen of my 1130. Maybe it might have melted onto the screen. I tried Formula 410 & soapy water, but can't seem to remove the marks. Formula 410 also left greasy streaks. Fortunately, my cat's claws are also capped in plastic.

I'm still waiting on my 1130, but our 505HD had a plastic screen. I used lens cleaning solution with a lens cleaning cloth and it did a great job with smears and fingerprints. I would be uneasy using any other chemical though. Now you have me worried, as we have one indoor cat that likes to "nose" everything he can find. It was fine before as the 505HD was wall mounted, but we plan on cabinet mounting this one. He is at least declawed in the front though!
Looks like the 970's are in stock. Estimated ship date today 6/12 Hopefully I'll get it Wednesday! I'll report how it looks on my 930HD.

If you don't want to use it, go into the set up and enter all zeros for the zip code to disable it.

I felt it again, rubbed my nails on it and tapped a screwdriver on the screen. I feels and slightly sounds like glass, but I'm still not entirely sure if there's some kind of thin anti-glare layer or something because I still feel slight resistence when I rub it with my nails. It's not as smooth as glass. I also used the electronics cleaner again and it cleared up the marks. They're still there, but really really hard to see. I think eventually they will go away the more times I wipe it and let it dry.
Bubbalotski 06-13-06, 01:46 AM I am considering purchasing one of a PDP-436HDG or 536HDG (they appear to be the Asian versions of the 4360 and the 5360 from the Army PX here in Korea before I head back to the states in a few weeks (they are VERY favorably priced compared to the 4360/5360 and have a 2 year warranty) and I cannot tell if they have a HD tuner. It lists the following:
Reception System: PAL B/G, I, D/K, M, N, SECAM B/G, D/K, NTSC M
I will use it for a Satellite and/or Cable through an AV amp.
I looks like it only has one tuner unlike the 4360 (probably the reason for the cheaper price than the 4360).
What are the advantages to dual tuners if one is going to use an external box to control the surfing?
The upside is that it does not appear to have the lousy TV Guide function, but the downside appears to be no cable card capability.
Here is the link to the Pioneer Asia site: PDP-436HDG (http://www.pioneer.com.sg/storefront/ProductDetail/ProductDetail.asp?ProductId=273&CatId=,64,6#). Not sure what the other differences are from the 4360/5360.
It might just be better to suck it up and buy the 7th Generation when I return to the States (I do like the media box though).
Thanks
B
lordofgain 06-13-06, 02:10 AM Glad I didn't wait. I saw the new 42" 7th gen at work today and it doesn't appear upon cursory inspection to look any better than my 4361!
As an afterthought, I watched Batman Begins on my PDP last night and was absolutely tickled with the picture! :D

I am THRILLED to report that as of a few hours ago, I have my 4360 set up and running! :D :D
I haven't got my HD cable set up, or any audio going yet, but I have begun to break in the screen with my OPPO971 DVD player running the "break-in DVD" and D-nice's settings.
I have also tested the OPPO with "the Aviator" DVD.
I am BLOWN AWAY by the image (even with the low contrast, break-in settings).
The OPPO971 does a fantastic job up ressing!
(I am a cinematographer by the way, so I am very picky about PQ!)
I have the OPPO set to 720P
(with the TV on "ZOOM" mode to avoid any black bars for the first 200 hrs) and it looks great!
I'll post some photos later this week.
If this is what SD looks like, I can't wait to see HD on this plasma!
Thanks for all the help so far everyone - this forum has been a GREAT help!
:D
Adaderf 06-13-06, 07:35 PM Got my 5060 yesterday. Damn. People: Stop reading this forum and pull the trigger already!!! I was researching...comparing..testing...researching some more for a year. Now that I have it I am convinced that there is no better 50 inch plasma out there....even the Elite. The only *noticable* difference the Elite gets you is "advanced ISF calibration settings". I can tell you that I "calibrated" mine in 5 minutes using the THX setup menu on my Star Wars Episode II DVD and it looks freaking awesome. Stunning. And I am the pickiest, most paranoid person when it comes to picture quality, black level, etc.
BB dropped the price 1,000 bucks once the new models were announced. They immediately sold out but I went to an authorized dealer by me matched their price.
Also......I was *very* worried that the Motorola DCT6412 DVR I am forced to used would suck. I loved my Tivo. But I made sure my cable company(RCN) gave me a phase III w/ an HDMI connection and it works great. I'm using the 1080i setting. I think it looks better than the 720p the DVR puts out.
Schteevie 06-14-06, 12:32 AM I am still crawling out of my skin with excitement...
Here is a shot of my 4360 set-up on “day two”!
(Notice that there are wires dangling from the walls were the speakers will go, and an empty space for my audio receiver beside the Pioneer media reveiver :p
It’ll be a while before I get the audio sorted, but I am taking my time breaking in the plasma while I research and save for it.
This shot was exposed for the Plasma, so excuse the bad exposure elsewhere.
This is with the OPPO 971 displaying a divX DVD that actually looks pretty good despite high compression and low res.

I'm trying to decide between the Pioneer 43" and the Samsung 50"... i like the pioneer because it doesn't have the speaker in silver on the bottom... and the pioneer looks a bit sleeker becasue of the speaker... BUT
and here's where i can't decide... the picture quality on the samsung seems to be considerably better than the pioneer... the pioneer also has some choppy pixelization that results in a picture that is not crisp (surprised me)....
i imagine the difference in image quality can be attributed to the samsung being 1366 x 768 vs. the pioneer which is 1024 x 768...
the reason i am deciding between the two is that i've got the opportunity to get either at about the same price (very good deal) and cannot decide what to get... or rather which to keep... since i bought the samsung and then saw the pioneer and got it (planned on returning the samsung)... but now i need a little advice from you experts... and i know you all are a bit biased towards the pioneers but was hoping i could get the most unbiased opinion as possible... thanks in advance for your insights you can share...

Two tone is unappealing to me; either one or the other but not both. Then it has side speakers. I think the usual suspect, Fujitsu, Panasonic and then Pioneer has the best picture. I almost went with the Panasonic, but the whites were yellowish.

I chose the Pio Elite after several years of research and saving. To me you won't find a plasma that won't display as deep and "crisp" of an image with the best available processing as a Pio. How did you decide that the samsung appears better? Are you comparing apples to apples (same source, cables, etc)? Are you using the out-of-the-box settings for both or did you calibrate each display? I've seen both displays side by side (with exact same feed, hardware and cables) and without a doubt give the edge to Pio by far.
My discission was was based primarily on the overall picture quality and not the physical appearance of the display itself.
viper10 06-14-06, 08:06 AM Just finished break in period for PIO 5060...can some please post for me the settings now to best maximize the features of the PIO. Watch movies on a sony upscaling NS70H and sports from a HD satellite source. Any and all info you can give to tweak the PQ would be appreciated.

tekmassa 06-14-06, 08:35 AM Anybody else watching World Cup and getting some nice image retention from the static black/white scorebar? I've resorted to watching the games on the bedroom tv since it took way too long to get the image retention to go away from last weekend's games. ESPN is normally pretty good with moving the static images around on the screen to prevent this sort of stuff from happening.
Also, wanted to note, this is the first time I've noticed any image retention on my 5060. After 200 hours at the break-in settings I did adjust my settings up to 30 contrast, but I'm far away from "torch mode". Perhaps it was watching 6 2 hour games with the scorebar in the exact same spot that did it? :o
britboyhk 06-14-06, 09:25 AM Can I stack a couple of other (not that heavy) AV equipment boxes on top of Media Receiver?
They are a cable TV decoder and a Sony surround sound amp.. (slim one!).

The manual says no.... but does anyone have any experience or guidance to give me?
Many thanks in advance

Follow Up Jne 20th
I visited the Pioneer Showroom to have a look at their upscaling DVD players - and what do I see?
Two shiny (and excellent PQ) DVD players.... sitting on top of a 436 Media Receiver!
Seems my fears over stacking were misplaced. I cannot understand why they put the "do not place anything on top of the box" in the manual. Just my 2c.

I asked that question of the Pioneer service guy who replaced the fans on my 4360 media box and was told that it depends on the equipment. Because none of the Media Receiver's air vents are on top, a DVD player that generates little heat and has feet that prevent metal-to-metal contact would be OK. A piece of equipment that generates enough heat to have a warm bottom would not, however, be a good idea. My Motorola cable box falls into that category and I would not put it on top of the media box.

I haven't messed around with the settings... actually I bought the Pio as an open box and not sure if the settings were tampered with before my purchase. I'm a little hesitant to calibrate myself based on some of the posts on this forum...
One follow up question: how much difference should there be between a 1366 x 768 (Samsung) and a 1024 x 768 (Pio)...
Thanks again for all your insights.

6 2-hour games, huh? Thats pretty extreme and about right for that many hours. Dont worry though, it is just temporary image retention and will go away. The longer you have the set, the more extreme conditions you have to expose it to for the same level of image retention. At 1000 hrs, you probably would have to go more than 24 hrs straight for any slight retention at all.
Nothing to worry about at all.
The broadcast quality of the world cup games has been really good in my limited viewing so far. Most of the games are going on while I am at work unfortunately.

You wont be saying such nice things about the motorola boxes for long :)
They are really buggy after having been plugged in for a while. Depending on how often you use the dvr functions and make recordings, you will start to see bugs and issues pop up.
I have to pull the power cord on mine once every 2-3 weeks to reset it and get rid of the bugs. Most others are around a month or so from what I have seen. There is a huge thread in the dvr area about the 6412 and its many issues...
Congrats on the display and enjoy!
Mike4AU 06-14-06, 02:21 PM I’m hoping you guys can help me. I am looking at getting the 4361 (43"), but I have 2 problems with which to deal. First, I would be placing the unit in an entertainment center and would have only 1/4" to spare on each side (without the speakers on the sides). The back of the entertainment center would have about 2 feet of open space, so I think that I would not have a heating problem, potentially, because there would be only 1/4" clearance on the sides.
Second, I am thinking about placing the speakers on a horizontal plane, just below the unit. Do you think the sound would be OK in that position. Note that I watch “regular” TV with the speakers on the TV, but run Dolby 5.1 thru my AVR when watching movies, DVD’s etc. For regular TV (like newscasts) the TV speakers are all I care about.
What do you think? Thanks for any help!

So long as cool air can enter from the bottom (between the stand and TV) and exit at the top, I would not expect heat buildup to be a problem. I would start out by putting a thermometer behind the panel and then add some vents to the top of the back panel only if the temp built up above 80 degrees or so.
As for the speakers, I tried the speakers on my 4360 in several different positions, including under the TV and aimed at the wall behind the TV. It sounded considerably better than the average tube TV in all positions and should be more than good enough for news, etc. Size and shape were a bigger problem for me and I eventually replaced them with small bookshelf speakers which sound fine with the internal Pioneer amps.
I have been zooming the picture to remove the graphics as I also suffered annoying image retention after just one game! My 1130HD is set to D-Nice's settings with about 1400hours on it now.
There is a thread going regarding the awful graphics ESPN are using on the HDTV forum.
Mike4AU 06-14-06, 03:20 PM WilliWu, thanks for the help. Air, plenty of it, can circulate from the bottom, top and back. I think the heat will be fine. As far as the speakers go, which bookshelf speakers did you go with and did you have to splice into the speaker wiring that plugs into the back of the set? I may just go that route.
Again, many thanks!

I went for the Ascend Acoustics 170s which are highly rated in the speaker section of this forum. I went for high end bookshelfs because they are the only speakers I use with this TV. You can find them at: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cbm170/cbm170.html
These would probably be overkill for your situation since you use your A/V system for serious listening. You could find a pair for less than $100 at CC or BB that would sound fine.
The 4360 has the same type speaker output connectors as an A/V receiver, so that the hookup is a snap. No pun intended.

My eyes see a significant gain in black levels in the 6g vs the 5g. I was tempted in this direction as well, but decided to wait on the 6g. Looks like 7g is right around the corner for the non Elites as well.
Either way, you have a nice set and should enjoy it.

Dear Willy
Many thanks indeed. I swopped them around so the media box is at the bottom. It runs totally cool. The box (like the display) was built in May 2006 so maybe they over came the heat problem already.
The sony DVD/amplifier does get warm on the bottom but has a cooler/ extractor fan as well so doesnt seem to warm the media box at all. Another friend suggested I put in another "spacer" box that is never switched on...
Being paranoid, however, I will probably still go and buy a cabinet/stand when I have time... I dont know why but I do not seem to be able to tear myself away from the screen right now.. :) :)
ssabripo 06-16-06, 09:38 AM I've been zooming in for the world cup as well....the most annoying thing is not so much the scrolling bars and the scoreboard on the top, but that stupid "Live" box and the "fifa world cup" box that is constantly on! even when you zoom in, it still shows up...it's idiotic!!
like if we dont know it is live or if its the world cup!!

That definitely should not be happening. Save1 and Save2 are two different methods of limiting the max output (brightness) of the display, which in turn saves power.
To me save1 appears to be a little brighter than save2 in some situations, but not all.
I would call pioneer and have them look at your display. Or just exchange it depending on where you bought it / how long it has been.
But if save2 is ok or you are fine with leaving powersave off, then of course the decision on what to do is yours.
All,
I've done some searches here but couldn't find anybody who posted similar experiences, if there's please point out.
When I use ANT A to watch my usual OTA HD channels, there is no signal at all, the screen just went black, I've verified that the OTA antenna works because I can watch SD channels, e.g. channel 3 is there but 3.001 gives me a black screen, as well as my Dish VIP 211 (a HD receiver) displayed those OTA channels properly (mapped via INPUT 3).
Anyone else has similar experience? Thanks

I have a similar situation but I'm not convinced that it is a "problem" with the panel at all. I see something that I can only describe as a slight flicker or what seems to be a slight adjustment in brightness. It is not the "picture going out" to me. I mainly notice it when a scene goes from having a lot of white or lighter colors to darker colors. When I first started to really notice this (after a couple of weeks of owning the display) I pointed it out to my wife but she doesn't see it at all. After I got through the break in period of 200+ hours I cranked it up from save 2 to full. This has reduced the frequency of how often I see it but it is still noticeable from time to time.
Then I found a thread on this forum where others have seen similar effects on many different plasmas. Some speculate that what we are seeing is a difference in decay rates for certain colors which most don't notice (or something like that, I don't recall the specifics). Do a search for rainbows on plasmas or plainbows (I think someone coined that term). You'll find a long discussion about this "phenomenon". I still can't say for sure what it is though.
britboyhk 06-16-06, 10:04 PM I have a new 436 and have changed the settings as recommended here. I have a few queries which I hope some kind soul can help me with.
I have broadband TV which supplies output in SD / MPEG2 format. Its supposed to be DVD quality. In reality the quality is very variable both by channel and programming content. Some pictures looks okay (especially close up shots) but others look washed out.
Will turning on MPEG NR to low / Mid help get a better picture? How about the "normal" NR?
Also, the decoder box outputs either component (625i) or s-video (PAL) but to my eyes the s-video looks better to my eyes.
Last but not least, only the Golf Channel has no logo or subtitles... Will watching golf for a long time affect the TV?
Any suggestions?
Calibrated using Avia. All Oppo setting (sharpness, etc. are at 0). Did not try upconverting options.
Think that you will be very pleased using the Oppo as a 480i HDMI transport into your Pro-930HD!

I have now been able to watch a few movies on my Pio 930HD with 970 set up and would gladly recommend this player to anyone considering feeding it to your Pio. It is a GIANT improvement in PQ over my old Sony. Currently using 480i HDMI hopefully will try out some of the other settings soon for comparison.
a_ok2me 06-18-06, 02:32 AM The TV Guide is junk and not even close to intuitive  :
1) Is there a way to scroll through the TV Guide and not have to scroll all the way back to my original station if I don't see anything else to watch? Or, can I scroll through the list without the tuner changing through each channel? Very annoying.
2) Why doesn't the TV guide store my HD stations such as channel 7.001 (ABC)? Instead, it stores the standard def channel 7.000 (ABC). Very annoying.

1. Just punch in the channel # you want to watch, select go to, then enter.
2. Depends on what is broadcast in your area. If they broadcast the HD info, there may be a different code that you enter during setup.
3. Yes, TVGOS does suck.

I really could use some advice on a couple things please...

A/V RECEIVER:
Also, I have an older version Sony Receiver. I've been doing some searching online and tried to compare receivers and prices and reading as many reviews as I can. Can anyone provide some suggestions on their experiences with their receivers? I'm trying to stay in the price range of $500 or less. I know this is not the A/V section, but since it affects my Pio Plasma, I would much rather here from owners of the 5060/5061/Elites instead of people with other sets that may be affected differently.
A couple questions on receivers that affect my TV viewing that I would like to get from you since many of you own the Pioneer 5060HD:
Do I want a receiver that supports HDMI?
By running an HDMI cable from my NS75 to a receiver and then running a HDMI from the receiver to into the 5060HD Receiver. Is this going to affect my quality? Most of these receiver have up-conversion. Which means both the DVD player and Reciever would try to upconvert if I'm correct? Any words on this would be greatly appreciated.
I have heard to just run Optical sound into A/V Receiver and then run the HDMI straight into the 5060HD Receiver and let the NS75 do the up-conversion. So if thats the case, should I not bother about getting HDMI on a receiver? I'm sooooo confused !!!
I'm also looking for a receiver capable of doing the AutoSetup/Auto Calibration that is done with a Microphone thats normally included, so it will setup the delay and provide the correct Home Theater sound. So I would like to take that in consideration.
I really would appreciate any feedback on any receivers that you feel worthy of looking into are in that price range. I've been looking and checking reviews on eopinions, and a few other websites with not much luck. I had taken in thought the Sony STR-DG800 but its not being rated to good.
Thank you in Advance..

can't help with the DVD player settings, I have the OPPO 971 (love it!)
Anyway - as for the audio receiver, I am in the same boat...
not finished breaking in the plasma, and starting to learn about audio
So far, I am leaning toward getting a simple (but good) receiver, that doesn't support HDMI, as it really seems like a silly feature to have your audio receiver involved with video (some will say it is good to have the option for on screen audio adjustment menus, but who really cares?)
Anyway, I am looking at the HK-AVR140
(link to thread with some info (and a few of of my questions) about that below)
good luck and let me know what you decide

a_ok2me 06-18-06, 10:51 PM I'm still waiting on my 1130, but our 505HD had a plastic screen. He is at least declawed in the front though!Just want to confirm that I am now sure there is a thin soft anti-glare layer or something covering the glass. I lightly poked a spot on the corner of the screen to see if it scratched. It did. Also, my glossy bezel has several small cat scratches. Starting training your cat to stay off the stand. I've now been able to train mine.
All 5th. 6th, and 7th Gen Pioneers have a optically smooth plastic front-end surface. It is not glass.

Note that contrast and sharpnness are a few points higher.
Which should we be using?

Reading through this forum it seems a lot of people have bought new DVD players to go with their new TV's.
Will gettng an Upscaling DVD player (such as Oppo, Pioneer or Sony) improve picture quality that much?
I thought the 436 had a scaler whcih converted lower res input to 720 lines anyway?
Advice please before I flash my CC again :)

D-Nice,
Thank you for all the great info you provide to this thread. If it weren't for guys like you, all us newbies would be banging our heads against the wall.
I just received delivery of my new home theater consisting of the PRO-1130HD, the VSX-74TXVi, and the DV-79AVi. Along with that I've got A SA3250HD set-top box for my cable feed. I've decided to team all that with B&W FPMs using the FPM6 as a center, 2*FPM5 for left and right, 2*FPM2 for surrounds and the PV1 for the sub.
Anyway, after everything was set-up and I began staring at my panel both on and off, I noticed that the glass or plastic, as you said, although being perfectly flat, seems to appear wavy or dimpled. I've got a large window behind the sitting position and when the panel is off, the reflected image moves in waves as I move my head up and down. What bugs me more is that I could swear I see the same effect when the panel is on and an image pans across the screen. Please let me know if this is normal.
Also, could you please provide me with settings that in your oppinion would be optimal for my set-up.
Malicious, I know your set-up is closer to mine that D-Nice's so please feel free to chime in. It would be both welcomed and appreciated.
Thank you,

The "wavy" reflection when the panel is off is normal.
Your setup is very similar to one of mine (different speakers). I was going to get the FPM's myself, but the local dealer here would not return my calls to place an order. I even went to their shop and the orderng person was at lunch. Who ever that person was must have taken an extended lunch because they finally called me a week after I visited their shop. I ended up purchasing Def Tech Mythos Eights for the fronts and a pair of Mythos Six for the rears. Absolutely love them.
How do you like the FPMs?
Schteevie 06-19-06, 11:07 AM I revised the break-in/run-in settings. Reduce the contrast to 22.
OK, I'll reduce settings... any particular reason for the revision?
Another issue with the 4360/5060 and elites in my opinion:
How do you guys feel about the Media Receiver ALWAYS having a fan running...? even when it is on standby.
I can hear some sort of fan or something humming in there 24/7.
It seems to me that if you want something to last for years, you wouldn't want a component to be wearing out a moving part 100% of the time despite it only NEEDING to be on 20% of the time when you are actually using it (and maybe for 5-10 minutes after shut down to help cool.)
Anyway - this seems like a design flaw to me, and I am considering installing a switch in the power line so that I can easily kill the power to the display and media receiver.
(as opposed to shutting down my power conditioning power bar and taking out all my other components, to avoid lost settings or something if power is off for a week or something when I am away)
- on that note, any one know how long the media receiver will store settings when it is disconneccted from A/C power?
thanks.

I absolutely love them! Not only do they sound fantastic, but the black lacquered trim matches the bezel of the 1130 perfectly. Win win.

All,
I'm guessing people are probably off vacationing, so I'll repeat my question again, this problem happened on my 5060HD.
Has anyone had a problem where you can't watch any HD channel on your ANT A, only SD is viewable and when you hit those HD (clicking thru the remote or via guide) the only thing you see is black screen?
I connected an off air indoor antenna to ANT A, at the same time splitting it to a dish receiver. I can watch those same channels via the receiver, heck even with the 5060HD on ANT A I can even check the signal strength and it gives pretty high value, in the 70s, it just that the screen went black and stays black, like there's no signal connecting to it.
I've checked somebody suggestion above on turning on the channels on the guide, this has nothing to do with it at all. The problem I'm having has to do with the fact it's not displaying anything HD. Could it be the HD tuner having problem? Broken? The TV is a March 2006 production, I'm not expecting any problem, should I?
Thanks y'all.

With the unassigned HD channels +100, I turned them on and assigned a channel number but couldn't get a listing for those overnight. I just have standard cable, so maybe that's why I'm not getting HD channel listings.
I also figured out how to surf without having the channels change by "locking" the channels.
a_ok2me 06-20-06, 12:01 AM Now I need settings on how to train my cat! :) I kinda wish the fronts were real glass, but perhaps glare would be an issue (along with weight).Try pointing the remote to your cat and press the split button, or maybe freeze or sleep. :)

Make sure you turn the power save mode to save2 (VERY important)I can see how contrast, brightness, color, tint & color temp can contribute to burn in, but how does reducing sharpness, turning off noise reduction and changing pro adjust affect burn in? I thought all those features are related to scanning and filtering.

care to share? :)
standard141 06-20-06, 09:49 AM when you say "watching tv", do you mean through the internal tuners in the plasma, or through an external sat or cable box? What equipment do you have connected and which inputs is it connected to?
What resolution is the dvd player set to? what resolution is the xbox set to? same with cable/sat box.
we need more info :D
i mean through the internal tuners. i have a pio 490v player connected, xbox360, xbox, and a gamecube. the dvd player and the xbox 360 are running on 1080i and the xbox/gamecube run on 480i. i dunno its just really weird i turned off ALL power settings and it happens but not as frequently as before. its really weird i might call pioneer and ask them about it today.

Sharpness, NR, and Pure Cinema settings hae absolutely nothing to do with burn-in/run-in. Those settings are there to make the picture more pleasing :D
platypus 06-20-06, 10:31 AM For those of you using the 1013 Elite swivel stand, can you tell me how much swivel I can get with it? 45 degrees? Still contemplating whether an articulating wall mount or the Elite stand will work best for my 4360 set-up.
kkoenning 06-20-06, 12:31 PM standard141,
I have an Elite 1130hd and the problem you described sounds VERY similar to what I have been seeing recently. You're right--it is EXTREMELY annoying. I have been seeing this flicker occasionally--sometimes it's there, sometimes it isn't. Last night it showed up again and I tried changing inputs and found that the flicker was there with all inputs: component in, HDMI in, S-video in and the internal tuner.
I would be interested in hearing what Pioneer has to say about this.
TIA

Not even close to 45 degees. I have one on my 4360 and would estimate that it's about 10 to 15 degrees in each direction for a total of 20 to 30 degrees. That's fine for my situation, but might not be enough for some.

Great. Thanks for the quick answer.
pintozack 06-20-06, 01:25 PM I see something that I can only describe as a slight flicker or what seems to be a slight adjustment in brightness.
Hey Cole5, I also have an Elite 930 and have seen the same thing. I looked at the plasma rainbows thread you mentioned, but all I could see was people talking about color rainbows, which I don't see -- I see what you're describing.
For those wondering, what I see is a flicker or abrupt change in brightness as the screen seems to "compensate" for a change in the image. For example, we've started watching the show LOST on DVD, which takes place on a beach with a jungle. If a shot moves from the jungle (dark) to the beach (light) then you'll immediately see the beach in all its brightness; but a split second later, the screen seems to compensate by bringing the image brightness down a notch. This gets pretty annoying, and it does seem to happen on multiple inputs/sources.
I'll admit that I did just a little bit of change to the default adjustments when I first got it 2 months ago. I will try changing to the break-in settings since I may not have even watched it 200 hours yet. But others have seen this despite using break-in settings, so... any suggestions to reduce/eliminate this?

I have a 1120 so I don't know if this will help you guys, but I also had a flickering type thing going on. Turns out that I had to change the PureCinema mode from Advanced to Standard. For some reason, with certain sources, mostly normal television, the Advanced mode caused some periodic brightness changes or "flicker." Just thought I'd throw that out in case it helps anyone. Since you see it on all inputs and with all sources, maybe it's an entirely different issue.

I'm still trying to understand what "flicker" means. There are 2 situations I know of where the panel controls and adjusts contrast/brightness itself. Those are (1) when DRE is set to anything but off (ie turned on in any fashion) and (2) when powersave mode 1 is selected. I would turn powersave mode to either off or 2 and set DRE to off and see if the flicker is still there. DRE (dynamic range expansion) alters the grey ramp based on the screen to increase the dynamic range of the picture. Blacks get blacker, whites get whiter, and more detail comes out. That is what the feature is designed to do. The electronics process the current image and then the DRE algorithm applies the changes. You can see this happening real time in some situations. You will see the picture, after a drastic scene change, and probably 1/4 of a second later the image contrast changes, kind of like doing an "auto contrast" option in photoshop on a picture, if you guys are familiar with any digital photography tools. But in my experience it is not all that regular that you actually percieve the change. The powersave mode 1 is doing something dynamic with the brightness for powersave also. I dont know what it is doing, that is just based on observation. Compare powersave 1 and 2 on the same screen and sometimes you get the same output, sometimes they are different.
Now if "flicker" means somthing like a frame rate flashing-- regular, periodic, fairly quick, like an old timey film reel... then you may want to change the purecinema setting to off or standard. I leave mine in standard and find the display does a good job autodetecting 24fps content.
MaliciousBraham 06-20-06, 02:46 PM All,
I'm guessing people are probably off vacationing, so I'll repeat my question again, this problem happened on my 5060HD.
I do not remember a single instance of this being mentioned here in this thread... sorry.

The "flickering" may be due to your power save mode setting as others has said. The "flickering" will not happen when the power save mode is set to Standard. However, I do not recommend using Standard if you have less than 500 total hours on your panel.
I personally use save2 and have only seen the "flickering" once in a blue moon.

Did you do a channel scan on Ant A?
drsiebling 06-20-06, 05:39 PM try turning off your dynamic contrast. I used to notice the same "Flickering" when I had it turned on and since disabling it, the problem has gone away.
