View Full Version : Official Pioneer 4360/5060/Elite Experiences, Set-up, Questions & Pictures Thread!!!
D-Nice, et al. I returned the 1130. again, not because of quality, but I want bigger. I did NOT buy the 1410. something about a model being over a year old, and Pioneer themselves telling me it isn't that good compared to the 1130 - I just figured regardless of the deal, I can do better waiting. I eagerly await the replacment for the 1410, or will look for a suitable fujitsu.
I'll be lurking around, thanks for all your help everyone.
Here are some setting for you to use for your SA 4200 during the break-in period. After break-in, just turn the contrast up. make sure you turn your power save mode to save2.

D-Nice.... I mistakenly tweaked my settings for my sa 8300 using these settings... and you know what... it looks awesome!.... got rid of that vague pinkish hue I was talking to you about a few weeks back... also, I seem to be getting more of that hd, 3-d effect... color may be pushed a little too much (+3), but, hey, what can I say, I like the way it looks.
umm... nevermind. I was wrong. Back to your 8300 settings.

Robonaut 01-15-06, 06:41 PM So, I thought you all might be interested to hear the results of a little experiment I did with my 1130HD this weekend involving hooking my set up to my PC.
I did this so I could watch the WMVHD version of "Coral Reef Adventure".
This was the first time I've seen true hi-def content on my 1130HD, since I don't have cable and I use the 1130HD exclusively for watching DVDs.
I used a Blue Jeans DVI to HDMI cable and had my PC output at 1280X720P.
The WMVHD version of "Coral Reef Adventure", if you didn't know, also comes packaged with a standard DVD version, so I was able to directly compare the same film at 720P and 480P (well, actually the standard DVD version I upscaled to 720P using my Sony DVP-NS70H).
Okay, now I see why people are so excited about HD-DVD and Blu-Ray. There was a noticeable improvement in detail and color between the WMVHD version and the DVD version. It certainly wasn't on the level of "gee, after this, I'll never be able to watch a DVD again", but the WMVHD version was definitely better. I've read elsewhere on these forums that anybody without a front projector is not going to see much difference between hi-def DVD and standard DVD. I'm not sure what kind of set those folks have but I think anyone with an 1130HD is going to have plenty of reason to upgrade to hi-def source material.
Also, while I didn't play with it for too long because I was worried about burn in, I did a little bit of internet surfing, and the picture quality was fantastic. Text was very clear and sharp and highly readable. I didn't get a chance to compare the HDMI signal to the same signal over VGA, but I have a hard time believing that the VGA signal could look any better, even though you could send the display its native resolution.
There was, though, one strange issue I encountered. Whenever I would change inputs, say from my PC on input #3 to my DVD player on input #1, when I went back to my PC, there would be no picture! Rebooting the TV did not fix this. The only thing I found that worked was unplugging the HDMI cable and the plugging back in. As soon as I did this, the picture would reappear. Has anyone else experienced this?

Now you're talking... these will definitely be my new settings (give or take a brightness tweak here and there).... ok, here's my real question... do you always keep pure cinema on... I have found that, some times, it has the exact opposite effect of what it's supposed to... ie, certain motion scenes become very awkward and juddery... I'm just discovering this, as I had it off in the past.

I have found that judder comes from the source material or source equipment.
For instance, When I made the Oppo settings for Pete, I noticed a WHOLE lot of judder in chapter 3 of Star Wars EpIII and the Paramount opening credits on Sky Capitan. It didn't matter if I had pure cinema off or on, it was there. My Denon 3910 and 2910 on the same scenes were fluid...no judder what so ever.
Pure Cinema set to ADV on my SARA based SA 8300 is a winner for me.

One word....HDCP

Funny... I thought you had the passport based SA 8300. I'll play around with it and let you know what I find.... fact is, I hadn't noticed any judder on anything (dvd or cable) until I saw it today on TNT HD with Pure Cinema on adv.
guptown 01-15-06, 11:09 PM I did a search through this thread but I can't seem to find anyone else, other than the thread starter eelton, that has the Panasonic RP-91. Is anyone else using this dvd player? It has terrific 480i output. I am hoping that the combo of the rp-91 and the 4360s scaler would be better than an upscalling dvd player. Any thoughts??
gbriank 01-16-06, 01:28 AM Denon 1920. Thanks for the settings...definitely made the image "pop". I'm now looking for a new receiver. The Kenwood i've got is definitely not cutting it, not to mention it doesn't have the audio delay function (circa 2001...little old). So, that'll be my next expenditure....thinking about another Denon...very impressed with the dvd player.
Try these for your cable box. You can bump the color setting up per your tastes. What type of Denon DVD player do you have?

I own an RP91, actually. I find that the HDMI output on my Sony DVP-NS70H gives a noticeably crisper image than the component output on the RP91.
Considering the low price of the DVP-NS70H, I really think it's worth your time to check it out. If you buy it from somewhere with a liberal return policy, you can always return it if you don't think that the PQ is that much better.
Secret Avatar 01-16-06, 10:58 AM Hello all! Just got my 4360 this weekend and fired it up. WOW. Can't believe I waited so long to jump on the plasma train.
Anyway, I'm doing my breakin peroid by watching full-screen DVDs and using the burnin CD that was recommended on this site (I'm paranoid about watching anything with bars for the 1st 100 hours!).
My question is about the "pro adjustments": pure cinema, CTI, DNR, and MPEG NR. Are there recommended settings for these for maximum PQ? I'm running 720p HDMI and I watch DVDs 90 percent of the time.
Thanks in advance.

Secret Avatar 01-16-06, 11:16 AM Thanks, D-Nice. Are those settings for the breakin period or for use once the period is over (or both)? I noticed they seem similar to your recommended breakin settings. I've seen those settings and am following them for the breakin (thanks!) but am wondering whether there are "final" settings for maximum PQ after the breakin.

Both. You can increase the contrast after your first 100 hours if you want.
Secret Avatar 01-16-06, 11:51 AM Will do. Thanks again.
Another question about 4360 - can you get OTA HD without removing CableCard?? I tried a switch (OTA/Cable) setup into ant A and can't switch to "Air" (Channel setup) with CableCard in place. Seems like a serious flaw if CC has to be removed to get OTA HD. Thanks.
Jammer340 01-16-06, 01:03 PM Howdy. My 5061 arrived yesterday. I currently have basic cable running through my Tivo, from there RCA video and audio running to my receiver, and from there RCA video running to Input 1. I know it's not the best, but now that I've made the jump to a plasma tv I can upgrade the other components.
Everything is going well so far. I'm using D-Nice's break in settings. The only thing I don't understand is why the picture is staying on 4:3 Wide. I can't seem to change the picture to standard 4:3 with the bars on the side. Any idea what I am missing?
Thanks,

The cable card cancels out the OTA antenna.
Thanks, D-NICE. That's what I thought. Any problem with pulling CableCard every time I want to watch OTA? Was told not to because could bend prongs when pushed back in. My cable company didn't think that that was a problem, however. Any advice? I NEED to watch local OTA HD at times - like sporting events. Thanks again.
Please forgive me if this has been answered before... this thread is huge and hard to search... can one rename the inputs on the 4360? if so, how?

No, not for the display directly.
Here are manual links for all displays:
1130/930 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_11221/276752963PRO1130HDOperatingInstructions.pdf)
.
5060/4360 (http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_11221/276752973PDP5060HDOperatingInstructions.pdf)
Someone may need to check me on this, but I believe if you pair the display with an Elite A/V Reciever (which allows input naming), then by using the SR+ inputs on the display for communications, the diplay may show the renamed info from the AVR. This is just what I'm putting together from reading a few sources, as I dont have a 74txvi yet.
plasmalvr 01-16-06, 06:56 PM I spoke to my local Pioneer service center. They are going to send me the firmware fix for my clock that accelerates in time- quite annoying since the incorrect time appears every time one changes the channel. I'll do this myself.
He offered to send a guy out to fix "buzzing". Honestly, I rarely hear any buzzing. Once in a while I'll hear it, but I need to get unrealistically close to the panel- I'd never be 3 inches from the unit when watching television. The other thing is that the only reason I knew of "a buzzing problem" was because some people here complained about one. I declined his invitation because a firmware fix for this may precipitate a new problem. I can always schedule an appointment at some later time- before my 2 year warranty is up I guess.
Today Comcast installed the Motorolla 6200 instead of the 6412 that I ordered (they ran out). Anyone have this box? and what settings work best? I also have the Sony DVP-NS715P DVD player. For a old DVD player LOTR looks pretty good on the 1130 but still messing around with the setting for the optimal PQ. Any suggested settings for DVD player? I have DV Essentials but that doesn't go into too much detail.
Thanks,
Jim
PeteG84 01-16-06, 08:43 PM I have a question regarding the zoom function. Since I like to watch DVD movies using the zoom mode so I can remove the top and bottom bars on the screen while watching letterboxed movies would the video settings change since the image is zoomed. I am using your recommendation video settings with the Oppo.
Thanks

D-Nice,
You have been a busy man lately so you probably forgot. Do your settings with the Oppo you gave me last week would apply using the zoom function at 720p.
I am seeing a wonderful improvement and wonder if settings change when zooming.
Thanks
Pete
Can anyone recommend an upconverting DVD player to compliment the 1130? I have read the oppo mentioned in this forum... is that one of the best on the market? I don't want to spend to much since HD DVD and Blu-Ray are coming out this year.
Thanks!

No the settings should not have to be changed while zooming. Here are the final Oppo settings:

Find a B-stock Denon 2910 and purchase a Toshiba HD-DVD player when they come out in March :)
gordongordo 01-16-06, 10:28 PM At one of the authorized Pioneer online sites, I was told by the sales rep that the 5060HD and 5061HD are the same. Is that true? If so, why the difference?

They are the same. BB has their own model probably so they don't have to price match.
Vid Macintosh 01-16-06, 11:00 PM The 5061HD is a Best Buy only model number. Same unit but includes a wall mount. With a different model number they don't have to price match the 5060HD and only discount 10-12% off list during sales. I was surprised at the poor picture quality in my local Best Buy, especially with the fancy "living room" set up they had for the 5061. Turns out they demo with a standard DVD player, and a low quality, Best Buy created DVD of movie clips. not a high def feed and probably no upconverting. Such a waste of a fine display!

I recently saw the 5061 in a local Best Buy, in a separate darkened room with over $20,000 worth of additional equipment, and was quite unimpressed with the picture quality. All the while the sales rep was pointing out how incredible the HD was and I though I was looking at SD. I was beginning to wonder if I really wanted a Pioneer. Fortunately, I saw the Elites soon after at a Tweeter that had them set up correctly.
timbozi 01-17-06, 01:51 AM Hey all, I apologize if this has already been asked. Does anybody know, is it worth it to save the extra dough and get the 930 over the 4360?

I'm fairly certain that the best upconverting DVD player is the Denon 5910, since it is the only one which uses the Realta chip. Unfortunately, it lists at something like $3,500.
I personally use the Sony DVP-NS70H, which costs about 96% less than that  . I have no complaints about the Sony's performance on film-based material. On video based material, it leaves a bit to be desired, but I think all DVD players do (except for the 5910).
A lot of people have the Oppo and like it. I believe that there is a huge thread on it in the DVD player forum.
One thing to keep in mind is that, just because HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are coming out, doesn't mean your existing DVD player will be obsolete. I haven't seen a lot of details about what kind of deinterlacing chip the new players will be using, so there's no guarrantee that your new $1,000 Blu-Ray player will play standard DVDs as well as one of the current sub-$200 DVD players.
Malvoe1 01-17-06, 09:00 AM Another good (and popular around here) upconverting player is the Panasonic S-77, which is what I have. Personally, I feel more comfortable with a Panasonic than an Oppo, but then again my old school A-120 is still in operation, so I do feel a little loyalty there.
windrockwater 01-17-06, 09:31 AM My new 1130HD seems to make a slight Buzzing Sound depending on the image on the screen. When the screen goes black, between commericals for example, there is no buzz. But when an image reappears, there is a buzzing sound. Has anyone experienced this?

It is normal for all plasmas, but there's no question that Pioneers are louder than others I've heard... and owned.
That said, it isn't loud enough to bother me. From my seating position and with even the lowest volume on my system, I can't hear it.
Malvoe1 01-17-06, 10:31 AM I believe the primary reason Pioneer plasmas are a bit louder is b/c they only use one pane of glass (as opposed to 2)

When you spend that much on the display, you should be happy with it. If it's an annoyance to you, call either Pioneer or the place you purchased and see what they can do about it.
Although it is normal for the display to buzz a little, it still should not be an annoyance. My 1130 puts out barely enough noise to be heard with an ear to the front of the panel.
But bottom line, you spent the big money, dont settle for anything less than complete satisfaction...
My 5061 has a slight buz behind the tv but I can't hear it from a foot away...so it's a non issue. My Gateway 16:9 LCD has the same buz, but again, not noticable unless you ear is up on it. I do, however, have a loud / noticable humming noise from my Pioneer media receiver. When I press down on the top of the media center, the hum goes away. I'm going remove the top and place a piece of Dynamat under the top lid. That will stop it. Granted, I shouldn't have to do that. Otherwise, no issues.

I would recommend you have a friend or two over (or wife) and find out whether they can hear it. I could hear it on my 1120, but no one else that came over could hear it (including my wife and the tech that was sent out to investigate). At elast that way you will know if it's just your sensitive hearing or the plasma. With the 1120/5050's it was an issue with hearing sensitivity and the solution was to update the voltage regulator software. After the update was performed on my set, the buzz noise went away.
I would be surprised if the 1130/5060's had this issue since they would have the most up to date software, but who knows...maybe they use a different version, etc.

You don't suppose there's a correlation between this voltage regulator software and the image retention issue people have been wrestling with.... I wonder if the people who are complaining about image retention are the same ones with loud panels... just a thought.
garygamb 01-17-06, 04:27 PM Is anyone else out there lurking on the boards experiencing a huge delay with when they have ordered a 5060 and expectations of getting it?
I orderd on 12/9/05 from TVAuthority and they have still not recived a confirmation on ship date from Pio. I realize this is not TVA's fault, but a general shortage in this market segment.
Anyone have any news from other vendor's as to when to expect shipment?
dcpmark 01-17-06, 05:02 PM I just ordered a 5061 from Magnolia today, and they claim it will be here Friday. Of course, the 5061 might not suffer the same delay as the 5060, but another local dealer told me he won't have any 5060s for a few weeks. By the way, TVA just told me Sunday they were expecting more 5060s Thursday.
My Brother just ordered his 5060 last week from them and got it already.
MYFIRSTPIO 01-17-06, 06:56 PM Here in Canada, there have been shortages at FS and BB in some areas for the 4360 and 5060. I ordered my 4360 the first week of January and the expected delivery date is January 25th.

i just took the plunge myself and ordred the 5060 from TV Authority on Sunday. Well, pre-ordered, lol. but, the rep i talked to also said they were expecting stock to come in towards the end of this week. so at least we are hearing the same line.

My new 5061 has a buzzing sound as well when there is a something on the screen. I can hear it from 8 feet away. Is that something I'm going to have to live with, or is it worth it to call Best Buy and see if they'll send someone out to look at it?
On the plus side, the fan in the tunner is nice and quiet. :)
MaliciousBraham 01-18-06, 12:21 AM Echo? ;)
My 4360 just arrived yesterday, after shipping delays prevented it from arriving in time for the football games last weekend.
Was hoping someone had some suggestions on a wall mount to get for the 4360. From flipping around threads (which led me to the 4360, of course- well that and the delays associated with the 5060), I was leaning towards a Sanus VMPL50, but I was hoping someone had some experiences wall mounting a 4360, and could recommend a decent mount. I don't particularly care about rotating it around, but tilting up and down might be useful.
Thanks in advance. And thanks to everyone for posting about their TVs- I read through this tread (and many others) in deciding on the 4360, and as of right now, I couldn't be happier with my decision.
Malvoe1 01-18-06, 09:45 AM I have one of the sanus mounts, and it was really easy to use. Highly recommend them. Get them cheap from overstock.com.
windrockwater 01-18-06, 09:51 AM The buzz is slight and only noticeable when changing inputs or images. As most of us probably do, i am currently super sensitive to things with this new costs-as-much-as-a-car tv. But the buzzing is no big deal and i can live with it. The MR is much more noticeble but i have that in another room so no big deal.
Question:
I've configured my remote with some macro buttons to turn tv on, select correct input, etc. However, i find that i frequently have to hit the macro button twice for the tv to start showing the image. It seems to set the correct input on the first push of the macro button but it just doesnt show the image until the second push. Any ideas? Also, no matter what i do i cant get into the SM screen. arghhh.
BTW: I just sold my old sony 34xbr800 crt tv. The monster weighed 220lbs and is nearly impossible to move. It also had trouble with speakers distorting the picture. I think it actually permanently changed the picture over time.
Is anyone using the attached 1130HD speakers as their Center Channel speakers? In my new living room, i have no place to install a center channel (its above a mantel). So i am trying to decide between ceiling mount, use the TV's speakers, or, install a thin profile speaker undet the mantel using some angle brackets or a shelf. Any ideas?
NemoZorro 01-18-06, 12:14 PM Is anyone else out there lurking on the boards experiencing a huge delay with when they have ordered a 5060 and expectations of getting it?
I orderd on 12/9/05 from TVAuthority and they have still not recived a confirmation on ship date from Pio. I realize this is not TVA's fault, but a general shortage in this market segment.
Anyone have any news from other vendor's as to when to expect shipment?
Well, sort of. I preordered an 1130 from a BM a couple of months ago, and am still waiting. OK though, as we really aren't ready for it yet. Also, they are smaller, so their supply may not be a priority to Pioneer - they have mentioned quite a bit of shortage with the 79avi as well.

Try changing your sequence to put more space (or add a delay) between turing the tv on and changing the input. I have been able to semi-replicate what you have stated by turning the tv on and immediately hitting an input button directly after the power button.
The tv seems not to respond to the input command. If you wait until the tv is on and shows the upper-right screen (showing whatever input it was set to before it was last powered off) and then hit the input you desire, everything works fine. Dont know if the set responds the same over RS232 or not.
I'll have more info on your center channel question, but it may be several weeks. I have a trip planned soon, so if I dont get to play with it in the next week, I wont be able to for a while. Maybe someone else has already done that and can answer more quickly than I can. On the plus side, I'll have some great photos of Banff to try out the slide-show feature of the 1130 with ;)
ScotieJ 01-18-06, 02:22 PM I wanted to get a 1130 on January 7 and was put on a waiting list with 5 other people. I was told the expected delivery date would be the third week in January. Last night I called the B&M and was told only one 1130 would be coming in anytime soon and if I wanted it I would have to put some moeny down. Otherwise the middle of February was the date for the next shipment.
I am pretty much down to selecting a Pioneer 5060/PRO-1130 or the NEC 50XR5 plasma. I would love to have a 1130 but the local dealer where I can get the unit, wants about $1500 more than what I can get the 5060 for from an authorized internet dealer. I pretty much know the differences between the 5060 or 1130 but one question I have is whether some or all of the advanced picture controls that are in the user menu of the 1130 are available in the service menu of the 5060?
guptown 01-19-06, 08:59 AM I own an RP91, actually. I find that the HDMI output on my Sony DVP-NS70H gives a noticeably crisper image than the component output on the RP91.
Robonaut,
Thanks for the input. I went out to CC and bought the Sony on your advice.
Are you having the DVD player send out 480i via HDMI or upscaling to 720p/1080i?
I ask only b/c of the comment made by D-Nice earlier in this thread.
By sending 480i to the panel, you can take full benefit of 3:3 pull-down @ 72Hz Advance Pure Cinema offers. It also is the best signal to send because it minimizes the amount of processing the video would has to go through. Choosing 720p or 1080i can cause the video to be shown with the wrong colorspace, more mosquito noise, more jagged edges, macroblocking, and additional scaling processes as the panel will still scale 720/1080 pictures to the panel's native resolution.
My TV is about 3 weeks old and it is having two problems.
1. The plasma display is shutting off intermittenly. The plasma display will turn off (solid red led) and the media box blue power led will blink 12 times, pause for 3 seconds and blink 12 times again. This happens until the power is turned on again.
This also happens when the TV is off at night. I come down in the morning and see the same problem. The TV does turn right back on, but the display has a message that says to wait and then all is good. No channel loss or setting changes occur.
2. I have a Samsung DVD/VCR recorder (model DVD-VR325) it has an HDMI out. The DVD player upsamples to 720P (which it is set to do). The display says it does not support HDMI audio. I must use the RCA analog output and force the display to use the analog input. With HDMI audio input there is no sound, auto blanks out every 3 minutes for 4 seconds.
My TV was purchased a little over 3 weeks ago and the build date on the display is September 2005. I am slightly away, from this forum (great info here), that there is a plasma voltage issue and mine is in that time frame. The place were I purchased it from came out two weeks ago to diagnose the problem. They called Pioneer service in New Jersey and told me that I needed a software update. Pioneer told the service tech that they would send it right to me, but the tech said no send it to him and he will come and install it. I called the tech yesterday and they have not received anything yet and can't tell me when they will. I am located 40 miles north of Philadelphia Pa. The Pioneer service center my tech talked to is in New Jersey, about an hour away. The company where I purchased the TV, with the tech, is 8 minutes from my home. I would have thought I would have the fix by now. It has been two weeks. I wish they would have sent the update to me. I contacted Pioneer this morning and told them my problem. They will have a Pioneer tech from that New Jersey office contact me directly in 24 to 48 hours.
I am now having second thoughts. I feel I should have bought the Panasonic TH-50PHD8UK. The salesman talked me into the Pioneer 5060 instead.
Have you checked all connections between the MR and panel to make sure they are secure?
Have you attempted to have the panel replaced by the vendor?

As a very satisfied owner and user of an RP91 (for the past 4 years), I don't think "crispness" of the image is what you should be looking for - at the very least, it shouldn't be the measure of the quality of your picture. The RP91 shows more real detail than any DVD player that I have ever auditioned. The terms "sharper" and "crisper" can really disguise detail rather than reveal it. I would be very careful about adjudging the HDMI output of the Sony "better" than the composite output of the RP91.
I intend to give this a real test after I take delivery of my 1130.

Thank you for the response D-Nice,
Pioneer New Jersey has just contacted me. The tech at that office said there is a newer version of software he will send me, but unfortunately all the cards required for the update are out. It will take a week or two for them to send me the update. As for the September build date voltage issue. The tech doesn't know what I am talking about. He is not aware of any issues with voltage on the 5060 display. The HDMI audio may be fixed or may not with the update. I will check the cables today. It stinks when your 90 pound display is mounted on a wall.

I don't believe that the Sony can output 480i over HDMI. If you have found a way to do this, please let me know!!
I usually have the Sony send out a 480p signal. You can't use the Pioneer's CINEMA mode on 720p and 1080i, and I like to use that mode for watching 4:3 material. If I'm going to watch a 2.40:1 aspect ratio movie, though, I will switch to 720p. It could be my imagination, but I believe that this delivers slightly better clarity when watching 2.40:1 material in ZOOM mode on the Pioneer.
By the way, if you're really interested in 480i over HDMI, there is supposedly an inexpensive (less than $200) Oppo player coming out in the next few months which will offer this option. You can check the DVD forum for details.

I'll be interested to hear your opinion after you get your set.
When I compared the two, I hooked up both the RP91 and the DVP-NS70H to the 1130HD, calibrated them both using Avia, and then popped in Revenge of the Sith and watched the opening space battle. My impression was that the Sony just overall looked better--increased crispness to the image was just part of it.
The Pansonic is a great unit, and I have been very happy with it for the time I've used it. But it *is* getting a bit long in the tooth. It shouldn't really be surprising that even an inexpensive DVD player with technology four years newer plus a digital output looks better than the RP91.

You are right. I was thinking of the Sony DVP-NS975V . Sorry for the mistake. :o

I have been very pleased with the venerable RP91s 480i output but the fact that you have seen both players calibrated on your display is why I went out and bought the Sony. Once my 4360 gets here i'll do a comparison and let you know how it goes.
Thanks again.
Karl_in_Chicago 01-19-06, 11:50 AM Honest, I've read and searched so many threads but I just didn't find a good answer (that's not to say it's not buried here somewhere, I just couldn't find it).
I love my 1130. It's my first ever HD. Last night my wife watched "Lost" on it and was transfixed. I'm now ready to get a new DVD player (you know, like something a smidge better than my ancient Toshiba with only composite out) to hook up to the 1130.
My understanding is that, absent spending thousands of dollars on a high-end player, my best move is to acquire a unit capable of outputting 480i over HDMI and leveraging the scaler in the 1130. First, is that correct?
Next assumption is that there are certain units that can output 480i over HDMI that people have had good success mating to the 1130 and NOT having macroblocking issues. A short list of those would be the Panny S77/S97 and the Pio 59avi/79avi. Correct (and any others?)?
Assuming I'm on target so far (at which point I can bug the folks in the DVD forum) I'm interested in feedback from Pio owners on the benefits of having an all-Pio solution vs. a mixed solution. I can see using the same remote and that the Pio is black vs. the Panny silver (ick). I guess iLink might be nice for music but this is really 99% for video (I own one DVD-Audio disc). Other than that? I'm just looking for the best bang for the buck to let me see my DVD's in a "new light" and realizing that if, without sacrificing significant quality, I can save $500 to set aside for whenever the industry gets their HD-DVD act together and put it towards one of them at that time.
Thanks.
I am using a Samsung DVD-VR325 DVD player/VCR combo recorder. It uses a HDMI output for both the DVD and VCR. It only records on -R, but plays +R . It also, I am told, but haven't tried, plays S-VHS. I have it set to output over HDMI at 720p. The picture is great the display states 720p, but doesn't support HDMI audio. There is a software update coming from Pioneer. If it doesn't fix the HDMI audio it isn't a big deal because I use and Arcam AVR300 for audio. I can't state how the Samsung compares with Denon, Panasonic or Oppo, but the 5060 likes it except for the audio issue.
I forgot to mention the Samsung DVD-VR325 cost about $250.00.

Have a new Pioneer 4360 and am waiting for my Avia disk to get here in a week or so...in the meantime, wondered what I should be setting my settings to initially for things like contrast, brightness, sharpness etc in order to gradually welcome this baby into it's new home!
I thought I had read this on here somewhere, but as mentioned, can not find it at present amidst all the other info!

Also, if I'm happy with these settings, is it still worth it to buy and use the callibration disk?
Thanks,
mhfnet, I think you'll be very happy with any of those three. I was looking at those three as well, and about a month ago I got tired of "shopping" and went ahead and ordered the one I could get my hands on the quickest: the 5060. I had a killer price on the 1130, and with the recent price reductions I'll bet I could get it now for about what I paid for my 5060! I've been watching what they're saying about the XR5 on that thread now that they've began to ship. Bottom line is that I'd be interested in your question also, beause I find myself really wanting to "tweak" some of the individual color settings on the 5060. If I had to do it again, I'd get the 1130 just for that reason. I'm happy with the 5060 now, but if I can get the 5060 adjusted/calibrated in the SM, either myself or by a professional calibrator, my satisfaction will be even more complete. I'm mainly interested in seeing if I can get rid of what I've come to realize is that slight green push everyone talks about. I can see it occasionally in people's hair, certain other things. Not really terrible. It's not there all the time...varies depending upon what I'm watching. I can take the tint towards red, and this seems to help, but then people's faces become more reddish as opposed to the natural, more "yellow" or "tan" skin tone. I just can't help thinking that with the help of this forum and all the adjustment to the color settings people have posted for the 1130, I could probably have tweaked some of the greens...pulled them back a bit, without spending the bucks to hire someone to come in and completely calibrate it. BTW, would that calibration get rid of the green push?
I think that a $1,500 difference between the 1130 and 5060 is probably too great of a spread for me. But if it was closer to, say, $500 to $800, I'd say go for the 1130 (realize you'll also probably have to wait longer for it, too, than the other 2 models you're considering). The 5060 is a very, very nice panel. I've had no problems whatsoever. But I'm someone who somewhat understands some of the more complicated settings, and I wouldn't mind "messing" with some of those settings just to see if I could improve upon the "default". Color and Tint just don't cut it. The XR5 appealed to me for this reason. It had all the individual color adjustments. Plus it looks nice aesthetically, and NEC has a reputation for making good plasmas.
I had the price difference down to $600 between the 1130 and 5060, and now I'm wishing I would have just waited for the 1130. But hey, I got to watch my 5060 for the last month, I guess!
Hope this helps you make up your mind.
And I'll ask your question again:
Can the individual colors be adjusted on the 5060 in the SM (like they can on the 1130 through the menu system). Is this something that can be done by a "novice" or does a professional calibrator need to do this? I know the general advice is to not mess with SM settings unless you're a pro.
Thanks,
Rod W.
MaliciousBraham 01-19-06, 01:35 PM I'm interested in feedback from Pio owners on the benefits of having an all-Pio solution vs. a mixed solution.
One benefit of an all Pioneer solution is the use of the SR+ terminals. This allows one IR (infrared) port to control all the connected components.
For example, if you had a 79avi dvd player and 74txvi av receiver, you could stash the receiver and dvd player in a cabinet without worrying about covering up the IR ports. The plasma's IR port would allow the remotes for the others to work when pointed at the display. You also get on-screen display of functions from the other devices.
Other than that, there is the remote integration, knowing the products will most likely work well together out of the box... but not many other features than those.
Its really up to you what you want to do. I've found that searching for a DVD player on the cheap is one of the hardest things to do. After all the things I read before hand, I still wound up just buying one, trying it out, and if I didnt like it, carrying it back.
I'm a bit of a PQ nut, and I really didnt know that until I started this whole DVD player thing (didnt realize how picky I am). No matter what player I tried, I just wasnt happy. Thats why I'm saving for the 79avi. Great PQ, but defintely not cheap.
But just to be flat out honest, unless you want to spend $3k or more on a dvd player, you arent going to get anything close to "perfect" image quality.
dwishner 01-19-06, 02:51 PM Are there 3rd party stands available for the 5061? I'm not planning on wall mounting, and want something that can swivel, and is a little taller so that I can more comfortably fit a speaker in front.
Thanks,
Dave
sgnakster 01-19-06, 03:19 PM Hey can someone give me settings for the 1130 that's using a DTV H20 box? I want to test it out at work and see how much changing the setting would help, and also the room is semi-dimmed.
Also one little question, I read through a few pages, not all, but I noticed a lot of the settings are put on Pure, is it to help judder or something? I have only tested with changing from 1 mode to the other, dynamic being real bright and nice, but pure seems very yellowish, or maybe there's a better word to describe it.
I thought I had resolved to get the Panasonic TH-42PX50U, but seeing the picture on the Pioneer 5360 has me wondering if I should go with a 43 inch Pioneer instead. The problem is, I'm not sure what to make of all the model numbers.
I know the 4360 is the newest one, but it's probably going to be out of my price range. Costco has a 42 inch Pio in my range, but some of the posts in this forum seem to indicate that the picture quality is not comparable to the other Pioneers. Looking around online, I see a TON of other model numbers like 4312, 4350, 43CMX etc.
I'm using what I saw on the 5360 as a gauge for how the 4360 will look. What I'm trying to figure out is, how do the other models compare to the 4360. Are they just a little bit worse? A lot worse? Almost the same? And how do they compare with the TH-42PX50U?
BTW, would that calibration get rid of the green push?
And I'll ask your question again:
Can the individual colors be adjusted on the 5060 in the SM (like they can on the 1130 through the menu system). Is this something that can be done by a "novice" or does a professional calibrator need to do this? I know the general advice is to not mess with SM settings unless you're a pro.

Thanks for the feedback Rod.
I can pretty much get the 5060 or 50XR5 (with stand) for the same price. I could see paying $500 more for the 1130 but a $1500 price premium is just crazy. I assume this is because I can get the 5060 or 50XR5 from very competative, but authorized, internet dealers and the 1130 is limited to B&M retailers.
I spent quite a bit of time checking out the 5060 and 1130 and I agree with the Home Theater review of the 5060 that the pre-calibration grayscale was actually quite good, but it was a little cool (low color temp setting) and on the CIE diagram the green was a little saturated, however and think I could live with those issues.
http://www.hometheatermag.com/plasmadisplays/106pioneer/index2.html
The 50XR5, 1130 and my current Hitachi plasma have advanced color temperature and color management controls. The Hitachi picture was really quite good and I only really needed to adjust the contrast, brightness, color, tint using my AVIA DVD and would have been perfectly happy. However I did tweak the advanced color controls a small amount, but the improvements were very minor. I would think the same would be true if I bought an 1130.
I believe my solution is to get the 5060 and if the gray scale or green push bothers me to a point I feel it needs adjustment, I will pay $300 to have it ISF calibrated by someone that knows exactly what they are doing and has the proper equipment. I believe I would end up getting the PQ as good or better than if I had an 1130 and tweaked it myself and I will surely be money ahead. Just my two cents.
I called Pioneer today and the customer rep told me there was no published MSRP price reduction for either the 5060HD ($5,995)or the 1130 ($6,495) although she told me to check with a dealer. TVA has had a $300 drop for te 5060HD which may be related to wholesale cost change rather than MSRP change. Can anyone confirm this or otherwise provide the latest Pio MSRP.
Thx
a
I was quoted a $1000 less than what the 1130 was in December. My friend bought one just before X-mas and it was at a price that was the lowest I have seen on this board. So that makes it a bargoon! for now.
NatasNJ 01-20-06, 09:56 AM Question about burn-in on Pioneers....
I have been readin up on Plasmas in general and noticed that in lesser named brand you have to be very careful about not having black bars visible during DVD playback, limit gaming on the TV, run screen sweeper programs daily and the sort.
From what I have read in the Pioneer threads there seems to be MUCH less talk about these issues and problems. I understand being careful during the 1st 100 hours by lowering brightness and contrast but after that do the Pioneer models (5050/5060/etc..) have burn in issues normally? I understand if you leave a paused screen on for 48 hours and all but in normal TV viewing and maybe a few hours of gaming here or there should I encounter any issues with that?
And if you had to compare the burn in on TV's like Pio and other brands like Visio or Philips would you say they are similar or that one has lesser burn in issues that the others? Thanks for the feedback...
I am really impressed with the 1130 vs. all other Plasma's I have seen. I watch sports in HD, DVD's and game..
Is the premium price of the 1130 worth the extra $$$. I see myself keeping it for at least three years and then moving it to the bedroom.
Also, you guys know a good place for Plasma entertainment centers that won't set you back half the price of the set. I am looking for something that is clean, wood or wood like finish that hides wires, fits all my componets and center/front speakers.
nicholas 01-20-06, 10:03 PM You can't use the Pioneer's CINEMA mode on 720p and 1080i, and I like to use that mode for watching 4:3 material.

Are saying that the Pioneer can not do 3:3 pulldown on 1080i sources?
Yes it can. I use 3:3 pulldown for all my sources with no problems.

ninerlen 01-21-06, 07:42 AM I thought i'd share this with everyone. On Wednesday night I was watching Lord of War on DVD around 11:00 pm and I fell asleep! I woke up, glanced at the screen to see the menu on my two week old 5060. Panicking I turned to check the time on my clock, It read 5:45 am. So I quickly changed over to watch cable. And I almost keeled over right then. I could see the words PLAY MOVIE- SET UP-etc. on every channel. I was trying to convince myself that it wasn't that bad, but I was feeling nauseous and really depressed. Well to make a long story short after about 8 straight hours of viewing tv. I noticed that after every hour the image was starting to fade, to the point where I couldn't see it anymore. So I decided to throw an all white and black screen. Again I saw no image retention. So now my question is did I do any damage to my plasma?
So now my question is did I do any damage to my plasma?
No, not likely. This is perfectly normal. You did the right thing by playing regular 'tv' for hours at a time. There is a white paper on Pioneers site explaining this phenomenon. In fact, I think image retention is even mentioned in the owners manual.
Robonaut 01-21-06, 09:25 AM Are saying that the Pioneer can not do 3:3 pulldown on 1080i sources?
Sorry for the confusion--I was referring to the CINEMA zoom mode. I'm not sure if this is what it was created for, but I use it to eliminate black bars on 4:3 material. You do lose a bit of the top and the bottom of the frame, but I'd much rather do that then watch the "fisheye" effect of the WIDE mode. Sadly, CINEMA is not usable on HD material.
As D-Nice indicated, the 3:3 pulldown is controlled via a different option and *can* be done on HD sources.
Robonaut 01-21-06, 09:35 AM Question about burn-in on Pioneers....
Well, you may want to look at ninerlen's recent post.
From what I can tell, burn-in is much less of an issue than before with plasmas. HOWEVER, image retention still *very much* exists. So, if you spend eight hours watching 2.40:1 movies on your display, and you are not watching them in ZOOM mode, I would very much expect that you will see "ghosts" of those black bars on your plasma if you display a full white screen.
That being said, those black bars will go away if you watch a day's worth of 1.85:1 material, but it is definitely something to keep in mind.
As for comparing the Pioneers to other brands, I can't really say. I don't know if there is data anywhere to make such a comparison. However, other brands use a pixel orbiter, and I don't believe Pioneer does (I didn't notice any mention of it in my manual, at any rate).
TommmyJ 01-21-06, 11:59 AM I received my 4360 yesterday only to find a dead or stuck purple colored pixel. I can see it from where I sit(12 feet or so) so it would bug me. I also had a Hitachi 42 plasma that came with a purple colored dead or stuck pixel. The store that I bought it from seems to think this is highly unusual and doesn't say it but seems to think I am doing something to them to cause this. When the dead pixel was discovered on the hitachi they seemed to think it had to have been banged around to cause this. The demo I looked at of the 4360 at Best Buy had at least one dead pixel on it as well. I had to go into the store this time and look one over before they shipped it out to check for dead or stuck pixels. The only problem is the one in the store seems to look like it has been opened and restrapped because it had different colored straps(black ones) and they had plastic joiner things on them. I saw on this forum how to check the hours on the panel so I was thinking of checking it when it arrives. Anyone know if just checking the panel hours would void the Pioneer warranty if I had to tell the store the amount of hours on the set? Thanks
Karl_in_Chicago 01-21-06, 12:52 PM For 480i over HDMI:
DVP-NS90
Pioneer Elite 59avi
Pioneer Elite 79avi
D-Nice, thank you for responding. Are you certain about the DVP-NS90? I thought the NS90 only did 480i over component and thus was a source of complaint vs. the NS975 unit it replaced - which supported 480i over HDMI. I see the Panny units I thought would work for me also only do 480i over component.
Oh well, looks like the 79avi for me. Just ordered some HDMI cables from monoprice and I'll be swinging by Best Buy/Magnolia since I have a $100 BB giftcard I've never touched.
D-Nice question - I've been using the suggested 'burn-in' settings and am now past 100 hours. You've posted so many different settings matrices I'm not sure if I know exactly what I should be using now. It's a Pio 1130 using an internal antenna (need some furniture moves and some DirecTV additional cabling for D*HD).
Thanks again.

Just bump the contrast up to your liking :)
Check out my comparative review I did between the Elite 1130 and the NEC 50XR5.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6968304#post6968304
I have now compared the Pioneer to the latest Panasonics, NEC, and Hitachi plasmas and hands down the Pioneer is my favorite. Now I need to decide whether to get the 1130 or 5060. I was able to get the cost difference down to $680 from the original $1500 I once had by going to another Elite dealer. I have seen both the 5060 and 1130 and the PQ are both excellent with just a simple AVIA calibration. The extra features and warrantee of the 1130 are nice, but I am not sure if I would really use them, and I also prefer the silver/black look of the 5060.
I would appreciate any feedback from the other owners, especially the 5060 owners, do you regret not getting the Elite 1130?
Decisions, decision ...
dcpmark 01-21-06, 04:53 PM For me there was a $1200 price difference between the best price I could find on the 1130 vs. best price on the 5061, so it was a no-brainer for me. I plan on moving to SED as soon as prices drop to a reasonable level (thinking 2008), and having the 5060/5061 as your starter panel is not too shabby.
D-Nice,
I am soon to be a proud owner of a Pioneer plasma. :D
I see that you have posted settings for your Elite in this thread. When I was checking out the Elite at a dealer I tried your settings and the grey scale ramp pattern off my AVIA DVD looked really smooth and neutral. How did you arrive at your color temperature/management settings, purely by visual experimentation or where there some measurements envolved?
I keep thinking one day that I would like to invest in a SpyderTV to really take the guesswork out of doing adjustments like this.

Congrats on your purchase.
I calibrated my 930 the ol' fashion way....My eyes, some patience, DVE, the DVE color filter, and HDNet's test patterns.
The problem I still find with the Spider and ISF calibration is the fact that they will both calibrate your TV to D65 spec....BUT..... they cannot calibrate per your setup sources (DVD player, cable/sat box, etc).
guptown 01-22-06, 11:52 AM I just received my 4360 on Friday and so far it has looked fantastic! The picture is incredible and the colors pop! I was originally going to go with a panny 42" but I have no regrets whatsoever. I actually downsized from a 46" Mits widescreen CRT. I find the Pio to be its equal in shadow detail and black level and beats it hands down when it comes to color saturation and brightness. Watching "The Beauty of Japan" on D-Theater last night was unreal. My wife said it was like "looking out a window". Thanks to D-Nice for getting me started with my initial settings.
Unfortunately, not all is perfect. When watching an HD (16:9) broadcast via my RCA DTC-100 D* receiver I noticed a thin (one pixel width?) red line running vertically on the far right side of the picture. I went into the menu and shifted the image to the right (+3 setting) until it was no longer in the picture. The picture shift to the right resulted in a black border about 1/2" on the left where there was no picture. Not a big deal I guess but I hate having to lose some of my picture. Then last night while watching Saturday Night Live in HD (16:9) there was a thin green line on the left side of the picture. So I shifted the picture over to the left until it was gone. Guess what? Now the red line came into view again on the right.
There are no such lines when viewing xbox on input 4 or when viewing DVHS on ilink. I have not looked at DVD yet b/c I am waiting for my HDMI cable. Thus it appears that this is a D*/RCA/Component Cable/Input 1 issue.
My questions are these: What are the red (right) and green (left) vertical lines that I am seeing? Is this an issue with overscan of my satellite image? I am lost. Please help.
blorenzo 01-22-06, 12:48 PM Excuse what some would deem a nuisance question, but the 4360 and 930 both have a native resolution of 1024x768. How can that give you a true 1080i picture and true Hi-Def other than 720P?
Thanks,

It scales it to the panel's native resolution just like any panel out there regardless of size.

I found myself in the same situation last week. Price difference was about the same as yours, maybe a little more. After being able to view them both and the fact that there is a shortage of the 1130, I went with the 5061.
I figured if I was not happy with the 5061 I could return it within 30 days and get the Elite when they became available. I installed it above my fireplace yesterday and could not be happier! Until you walk up to the display and see Pioneer instead of Elite, I could not tell which set it was. That's just my opinion, but I have no regrets what so ever on this, and I am the type of person who would have returned that set in a heart beat if I felt the Elite was better no matter what the price difference.
I used the mounting bracket that came with it and has a very low profile and it looks great ( even when it is off).
Glashub 01-22-06, 01:56 PM D-Nice, you're a good man and I for one appreciate the time you put into this thread.
I am waiting for my Elite to be delivered in about a week and have a question. I know the stand swivels about 10 degrees but does anyone know if the stand can be disassembled as I am hoping that the stops can be removed or machined off so it can swivel a little further? My next choice is to put the stand on top of a separate "lazy susan" like swivel base but cosmetically that would not look as nice as just modifying the Pioneer stand.

Thanks. I think you are right. I changed component cables...no difference. Looked at the exact same channel with antenna and there are no red/green lines. Must be the STB. The RCA DTC-100 was one of the first D* HD receivers. Guess its getting a little long in the tooth. It has the r5000 mod that allows me to record HD so I won't be getting rid of it anytime soon.
I don't have an answer to your question. But I have a question that might be relevant to your situation. The first time I checked the hours on my 5060 it said 162. I wanted to see how close I was to 100. There's no way my set was on for 162 hours at that point while in my possession. Does the factory put some hours on it? If it arrived here with 100 hours or the hours meter set to 100 out of the box, that would make sense, because I was thinking I had between 50 and 75 hours on it at the time I checked it.
This might be relevant to you, because if it doesn't arrive zeroed out in the first place, it won't really do you any good to check it in the store (to see if it had been previously sold and returned, and then sold to you as "new").
Rod W.

Well, technically, neither set gives you a "true" hi-def picture. You will lose some of the detail even in a 720p image on the smaller plasmas--which is part of the reason I opted for the 1130HD.
TommmyJ 01-22-06, 09:46 PM Rod W, Thanks for the info on your 5060. I had the second 4360 delivered and it works great(no stuck pixels and no other problems). I checked the hours on it right away and it was at 22 hours. I believe the hours are added to panel hours even when it is off but in standby. My first set had around 11 hours on it the first night and when I checked it the next morning it was up to 18 or so. I don't know if there is another place in the SM to check for the amount of hours that the TV has actually been on. I had the first set for 1 day and it showed 18 hours and this one had 22 hours so it couldn't have been used all that long even if it was opened before I received it. I think they do put a minimal amount of hours on these sets at the factory for setup reasons as my first one showed some hours when first turned on as well. I am a little pissed that it may have been opened but it works great and has very few hours so I will keep it. I have went through a lot of tv's looking for one with out a defect/flaw and I am happy to finally find this Pioneer.

I think you are looking at the MR hours. The panel hour meter is located in the panelfact menu.

dcpmark 01-22-06, 10:26 PM How do you check the hours on a 5060?
Never mind. I apologize for my laziness.....
I was deciding between the Panny and the Pioneer or Elite and the more I compared the more I decided that the Pioneer Picture quality was just so much better. I got the Elite because it cost me just a couple of hundred more that than the 4360 at a local B&M chain, and with the extra year warranty, PC card and more user control, I figured it was worth the difference.
I just got the 930 about a week ago, and thanks to Malicious-Braham's settings that he suggested for the 1130 with the Moto DVR box, I have what I consider extremely realistic PQ compared to the "Standard Setting". I understand though that once the set is "officially calibrated" you also have ISF-Day and Night settings. Since I am a true novice at this stuff can any of you tell me how to activate that feature, since there is a big difference in the brightness of the room day vs. night? The other question I have is; would the settings change for DVD vs Digital Cable/HD or is that something only a few would notice? Thanks for all the help, this forum is great
I see "Main Hour Meter" and my numbers right now are 00889H22M
When I first looked at this, it read 00162H??M
Is there another meter? I don't see anything that says panelfact menu.
Thanks,
Rod

Is it possible to use the internal speakers that come with the Pioneer 5060 and add a stereo receiver and a couple of surround sound speakers and subwoofer? (as opposed to adding the left, right, and center and having to turn off the Pioneer's speakers)? I have not bought this unit yet but seriously considering it. Also, how does it display the SD? Do I have to watch the 4:3 "stretched out" or can I jst utilize bars on the sides and have a standard picture?
Has anyone compared the PQ between setting your DVD player's resolution at 480i, which lets the plasma do the deinterlacing and scaling, versus setting the resolution to 720p or 1080i?
When I was checking out the Elite 1130 I purchased (it is on backorder), I used my HQV benchmark DVD to check out the 1130's processor and it performed much better when the DVD player was set to 480i than at 720p/1080i. This might not be to surprising as the DVD player that was connected to it did not appear to be of very good quality.
I did a search through this thread to see if others found the same thing but I did not find anything definitive. I would be interesting in hearing in what people are finding using a high quality DVD player.

Rod... once you get into the SM, hit mute until you see Panel fact... once there, arrow down (I think once... but, at the most, twice) until you see hr--meter (or hr something or other) at the bottom.... That's it.

Sorry, I dont know how to activate those settings. Maybe there is a way in the service menu, but I have not needed to use those settings, so have not looked.
Maybe someone has toyed around in the service menu enough to know if it can be done that way or not...
Anyone?
(Thanks for the positive comments on my settings too. I prefer realistic, while some others prefer more "pop". My settings are getting fairly close to DNice's now, except for some of the processing features.)
windrockwater 01-23-06, 02:14 PM I need to get rid of my dedicated center channel speaker becuase it doesnt fit on my mantle where the TV is going. So i tried wiring the two Pio TV speakers together to serve as a center channel. It works great! I have B&W CD7nt mains and a B&W center channel. The center will probably end up on ebay unless i use it somewhere else. Actually the dialog seems to play louder now on the TV's speakers which is good becuase i always had volume issues on movies with dialog being low and sound effects being very loud. Now the sound is more even across the board. I also will not need to screw around with a ceiling center channel, or something equally non-WAF.

The simple answer is that ... it all depends on the dvd player. The LG LDA-511 (cheapo, comparatively) that I have does not resolve good detail in 480i, but does better at 1080i (still not great though, but I am admittedly more sensitive to it than others might be).
Nobody can really give you a full defacto answer as there are so many players that its practically impossible to try them all. But each owner giving their impressions of their player, it does seem that 480i is the best input to the panel when the player is capable of putting out very clean 480i material.
But each owner is different, and as always, picture quality is subjective. Whatever looks the best to you is what you should use...

I would have thought getting good 480i from a DVD player was easy as this is the native resolution of the DVD, no deinterlacing or scaling necessary. My question wasn't about using poor DVD players, it was when using a high quality DVD that is capable of outputting excellent 480i and 720P/1080i, how does the picture quality compare using 480i and letting the Pioneer plasma do the deinterlacing/scaling versus using 720p/1080i resolution and letting the DVD player do the deinterlacing/scaling.
If the video processing of the Pioneer plasma is as good as what I saw when I tested it in the store, it would seem it would be a waste of money buying a DVD player capable of outputting high quality 720p/1080i.
cronraptor 01-23-06, 04:44 PM Hi folks. It was suggested I add this question I posted in its own thread to this thread.
---
The CableCARD I transferred (from a Panasonic 42PX50U) to my new 4361 isn't fully working. I get the channel list and can view the TW standard tier programs plus the broadcast HDTV channels, but anything in their digital variety package, including non HD channels, won't come up. They've tried everything they can do remotely, but the card apparently isn't receiving the unlock code, or is ignoring it.
I've scheduled a technician to come out and replace the card. Any suggestions of things I can try to avoid the service fee for the trip? They mentioned resetting the card from the TV's menu system, but I can't find a "reset the CableCARD" menu item. Anybody know?
Thanks for all the help, this forum is great
ISF DAY&Night are only available after you have your display professionally calibrated.
The Denon 5910 is the only player I know of that is better than feeding the Pioneer a pure 480i digital signal from your DVD player. The less conversion that takes place, the better....and that goes for any display.
Hi folks.

Pull the power cord from the MR for 1 minute....take the CC out....put the CC back in....plug and power up the MR and panel....program the TV Guide.....let the TV sit on one channel until the CC diagnostics menu pops up.....hit the home menu button to get rid of the CC diagnostics menu.
The Denon 5910 is the only player I know of that is better than feeding the Pioneer a pure 480i digital signal from your DVD player. The less conversion that takes place, the better....and that goes for any display.
I take it you are saying that the video processor in the Pioneer is as good as those found in some high end DVD players or processors. I saw that easily when I fed it a 480i signal from an average DVD player at the dealer, but you are saying you would have to buy a Denon 5910 to get better. Amazing!
Glashub 01-23-06, 10:15 PM D-nice, in your opinion, would that be true of the Denon 5900, as well?
Just a quick update....for those on the various 5060 waiting lists, Beyond Plasma called today to say that their shipment had arrived and that they were sending them out. Hopefully they should arrive in the next 5-7 days. I hope you all have recently received good news, as well...
My 5-year old Pioneer DVD Player died a few weeks ago, so I grabbed a DVD Player from work (I didn't steal it, I co-own the company :).
It's a Sony DVP-NS575P.
I've been reading the posts regarding DVD Players into the 5060/1130, wondering if I need to "upgrade" my DVD player. Eventually I should return that Sony to work, so I'll need to get something. I also thought about just getting a DVD Recorder model so I could save some things (granted in SD) on DVD if I wanted.
I'm running component from the DVP-NS575P, and using progressive mode, and I have to say I'm quite amazed at the PQ on my 5060. I really don't know if it can be improved much, given that it isn't an HD signal. So far I've watched Batman Begins, War of the Worlds, Star Wars III and a few other movies, as well as several concert DVDs, and I have to say I've been very pleased. This weekend, I put in a concert DVD: The Doors of the 21st Century, and it looked absolutely fantastic. I really, really thought I was watching an HD program (I subscribe to DishHD, so I've seen some HD-produced concerts to compare it with).
So, will one of the DVD players, using HDMI set at 480i actually look BETTER than what I'm getting now for PQ from the DVP-NS575P? To tell you the truth, I haven't even tried using 480i out of this DVD Player.
I could get the Sony DVPNS90V for about two bills, and there's no way I would spend what others are spending on the real high quality up-converter DVD players. I could get the Oppo OPDV971H for the same price if I went with the up-converter type. But knowing what I'm seeing now with just a plain-ole 480p DVD player, I really don't know that this 5060 needs an upconverter!
Thanks,
Rod W.
Thanks!
Turns out the panel doesn't have nearly as many hours on it as I thought it did....just over 400.
Now I know that I probably didn't "break in" the panel as long as recommended...probably started bringing up the contrast, brightness and color before the 100 hours. But I've always been careful with logo bugs, keeping video stretched (not allowing the black bars to be on too long), and I've had energy save 2 on from the beginning, so I think I'm safe. I'm currently running at contrast 35, brightness -4, color -1, tint -4, sharpness -2. I find most stuff looks pretty good at these settings. Would these be safe to run 'till I reach the 1,000 hours?
And why does the MR rack up hours at about double the rate of the panel?
Thanks,
Rod W.
Rod... once you get into the SM, hit mute until you see Panel fact... once there, arrow down (I think once... but, at the most, twice) until you see hr--meter (or hr something or other) at the bottom.... That's it.
D-nice, in your opinion, would that be true of the Denon 5900, as well?
No, it uses the Faroudja chipset. The only thing I've found the Faroudja chipset to be better at is video based material (anime).
Thanks!

Your settings are ok. The MR is constantly on so it would have a higher number of hours.

Using the Sony NS90 with 480i over HDMi is FAR better than the Oppo.
Using the Sony NS90 with 480i over HDMi is FAR better than the Oppo.
Problem is, the ns90 doesn't do 480i over HDMI.... that's why I haven't fooled around iwth it yet. I've found that with this Sony, the best picture is achieved at 720p.
I haven't tried 480i over component.

They removed it as the 90 was the replacement for the 975?

I dont' know... I'm sure the genuises in marketing assured them that people were buying this unit for it's upconverting ability... so why include 480i.... although it will do 480i over component... is it worth giving that a shot?
Frankly, I've been avoiding crawling on the floor behind my media center to change wires... I've spent too much time doing that already.
Robonaut 01-24-06, 09:44 AM They removed it as the 90 was the replacement for the 975?
Yep. And, no, I don't understand why they did it, either.
There is a thread here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=614206) which tries to keep track of all of the players which send out 480i over HDMI.
Also, there is a new Oppo player on the way in (supposedly) March which will do 480i over HDMI and will cost less than $150.
Hi guys
Just finished reading the last 10 pages of this thread and learned some valuable and time saving tips. Thanks D-nice for initial color and power settings as I just ordered a 5060 at a very good price(I think?) from Beyond Plasma.
Has anyone had good experiences with Beyond Plasma?
Any reccomendations for a good wall swivel or articulating wall mount for this set? I am going to put it on a wall with various depths, so a flush mount would not look good.
Thanks in advance
baimo
Glashub 01-24-06, 11:10 AM Beyondplasma should be fine. They called yesterday to tell me my 5060 is in. Straight forward guys.
Karl_in_Chicago 01-24-06, 11:16 AM They removed it as the 90 was the replacement for the 975?
Yes - as I noted earlier in this thread, and they ticked off a lot of potential Sony buyers in the process. Still does 480i over component but just not HDMI - which is (also noted earlier) why I'm getting a Pio 79avi. Very strange move on Sony's part.
Going to pick up my 4360 tomorrow, very excited. Need to hook up external speakers to the tv without a reciever. My plan is to later on build up my surround sound with a reciever, sub woofer, and the rest of the speakers. For now I want to pick up a pair of Bose 201 speakers. They are rated as 120 Watts.
Yes I searched the forums, and no I did not find an answer to my question. So here it goes...
The amp in the tv is rated as 13 watts per channel. The Bose speakers are rated as recommending 10-100 Watts @ 4-8 ohms. Is the amp in the tv really that weak? Will my speakers suffer that much in performance running them through the TV? BTW if you haven't noticed electronics in High School was not my favorite class I didn't learn a damn thing. To my understanding I will only be getting 13 Watts of power when I could be getting 120?
Another thing I don't understand is why are they rated as 120 Watts when all of the recievers I looked at support up to only 100 Watts per channel. I will be missing out on that 20 Watts?
Thanks guys.

sanus's vmsa mount would work, but from my experience is that the tv adds a bit of weight and makes it a bit harder than expected to swivel etc....
if you don't mind the extra cost, I prefer this one VMDD26s. I can easily swivel a 55" tv on it, or push it back in. Tilting I have not tried

This is really a question for the speaker forum, but here is some general info.
The 120W rating is the max the speaker can handle without risking burning up, my guess is that it cant even do that for extended periods. That is the reason for recommending 10-100W input. 100W input wont be enough to damage the speaker, even over extended periods of time of continuous input.
A speaker also requires a minimum recommended input wattage. Meeting this requirement ensures the amp has enough power to move the speaker in the correct fashion to output sound in a way to conform to the rest of the ratings. The simple fact is that if you give a speaker either too much or too little power, it wont sound right.
BTW, while waiting for my AVR to arrive, I broke in some Mirage Omni-50's by wiring them directly to the panel and had no issues at all over extended periods. You should be ok, but as with anything, if you get better external equipment specifically for audio use (external AVR) you will get better sound than by just using the panel's internal amp.
Does anyone know where to find the viewing hours on the 1130?
Thanks,
Jim
Are there meters or a panel on these panels that show how many hours of use are on them?

In the service menu - instructions to access are doc'd in this thread but given the length of the thread it's not so easy to find.
With TV Off, do the following sequence on your remote: [EDIT]
Press the down arrow key once to scroll the page and you should see the viewing hours info.
Disclaimer - While in Service Mode you can do things that could have an adverse effect on your TV; you are on your own. Like we say here at my data center, we just fulfill the weapon and ammo requisitions - we aren't responsible for where the bullets go (the corollary to that is we will sell you more shoes but we aren't equipped to repair the holes in your feet).
Will that work with the 5060 also?
PS... once you press enter, you need to arrow down once.... Hr-meter is near the bottom of the page.
Robonaut 01-24-06, 03:44 PM Anyone else see the extremely favorable review of the 1130HD on the Sound & Vision website? :D

Woodrow 01-24-06, 05:48 PM Folks:
I had to delete the code. Service menu codes may no longer be posted on the open forum. Please PM service menu codes to AVS user BruZZi and he will add them to the service menu sticky in the Display Calibration Forum.
IIRC, he has already included this one, but it might be worth verification.
Thanks all.:)
Karl_in_Chicago 01-24-06, 06:10 PM Um, OK, the rules are the rules (and I do apologize for not being aware of this one) but . . . I can't imagine anyone wanting to know how to find out how many hours their PDP has been on would think to look in a forum about calibration. And it doesn't appear that the Pioneer thread in the calibration forum actually shows how to display how many hours the PDP has been on (which isn't surprising as such info is a little sideways from actual calibration info).
How about - once actually IN the service menu for the Pio (instructions found in the calibration forum) use the mute button to page through the screens until you see the "Panel Fact" screen, press "Enter", then press the down arrow and you will see the hours on info?
Ok, as some of you know, my 5060HD died when I opened the cover. Some type of copyright protection. I'm waiting on a main board but I had a brilliant idea. I got the service menu code (thank you above) and though maybe I could reset the television. Well, I got home from work today and tried the code. Sure enough, the set turned on and entered the service menu. I scrolled through the menus but couldn't find any type of master reset. However, I did stumble upon how to get the set to work, at least temporarily. By hitting the input button, it switches to the desired input and it plays television. eurika! But when the power goes out, it resets back to protection mode. So for now, the only way to watch the set is to enter the service menu. Maybe I can record that macro in my harmony remote ;). Anyhow, my question is....does anyone know how to perform a master reset?
ps. posting service menu codes are all part of the game. Isn't sharing info the reason this board is so successful? It should be allowed imo.
MaliciousBraham 01-24-06, 06:21 PM Anyone else see the extremely favorable review of the 1130HD on the Sound & Vision website? :D

Given my experience with 480p (very good), couldn't I still do 480p with the Sony?
I know some people prefer HDMI over component, or vice versa. FYI, I did some tests going back and forth between component and HDMI out of my Dish 942, and I didn't see much of a difference. It wasn't a scientific test by any means, or very thorough, just a brief "let's see if I can see any difference". The content was some Discovery Channel HD material...different material during one of their "promo" segments where they show a range of shots. It's always a problem evaluating because they change shots so often, that you're never really comparing the same shot. But both looked really, really good. If the Sony fits in other respects, should one rule it out just because it lacks 480i over HDMI? Will it still do 480p over HDMI?
Thanks,
Rod W.

It really is not that big of an issue. You guys are forum members, and as such can help folks by directing them to the area where the codes may be found. Just make a note of it, and then you can either direct folks there, or PM the info to them. So the info can in fact be shared.:)
Your understanding on this issue really would be much appreciated.:):)

Excellent review.
Howdy folks,
Been lurking for a little while (2100+ posts takes a lot of time to read :) ) I'm not yet an 1130 owner, but I have a couple (likely stupid) questions for the cognoscenti:
(1) I don't have cable, sat, or directTV and rely solely on OTA HD broadcasts and DVD for my video content. Does the media receiver include ATSC tuner?
(1.5) Any opinions on the performance of the ATSC tuner relative to external STBs?
(2) Does the 1130 use or have discrete codes for things like power, video input, etc?
(3) When the display is turned off, does the media receiver also turn off? I read that a couple people had issues with loud media receiver fans when the display was off.
TIA,
Mike
jmcclena 01-24-06, 09:28 PM Just got a 4360 the other day and have already gone into the room when the system was supposed to be in standby mode to find the blue power light blinking 12 times followed by three seconds off and then 12 times again (looping)....is this normal? Is it trying to download TV Guide info or something? The red standby light on the panel is on solid as you'd expect.

I am using a SA8300HD.

That's your problem. You need to disable the the TV Guide. There are instructions on how to do it about 10-15 pages back...I'm too lazy to search for it myself :o

the 1130 does have discrete on/off. (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-discrete/thread.cgi?keywords=2929&highlight=pioneer|1130) (obviously, I can't actually test it).

AquosS2k 01-24-06, 10:43 PM Hey,
I just read like 20 pages but didnt find what im looking for.
Simple question...
1. What is the diff between 4360 and the 4361 which BB carries?
2. From what i've been reading, seems like its not worth getting the elite series over the 4360 series. What is the main factual selling point for the elite over the 4360 or 4361?
3. is the clarity on the 5060 noticably better then the 4360 making it a better buy?
Thanks, appreciate it.

I've been meaning to post about my fan noise. It's almost non-existent on my 5060. I know people have issues with theirs. I just wanted to say that mine is very quiet, both when the panel is powered on and when both are "off". My Monster Power unit makes more noise. With my MR, I have to place my ear to the side of the unit, towards the back before I can hear it at all. My MR is on an open-shelf unit, not enclosed in anything.

1. Wall mount is included with the xx61.
2. That depends on who you ask. Selling points for me were the additonal color/grayscale/gamma/DRE controls and 2 year warranty +1 additional year per Visa.
3. I think the size will have more impact than the clairty. Bigger screen...more pixels.

Totally understood here, Woodrow, and I hope my reply didn't indicate otherwise. A mod's job is a thankless one! I was just trying to add info for the specific subject matter - tracking plasma display usage - that one could use AFTER following the directions on the referenced forum on how to enter the Pio Service Menu. I'm hoping that's OK and within the boundaries of happy-joy for all of us!
AquosS2k 01-24-06, 11:12 PM D-Nice, thanks for hte help.
I wonder if I can find the xx60 for cheaper w/o the mount. Since I dont need it.
The BB rep told me that the elites have constant circulation of bla bla bla to keep it from ever burning in, whereas the xx61 doesnt, although it still 'most-likely' wouldnt burn-in.
triplefffcalgary 01-24-06, 11:38 PM In Canada the 4360 doesn't come speakers or a stand. I'm trying to track down a stand on ebay but there are a whole pile of different models. Can anyone tell me which ones will fit the 4360?
D-Nice,
Thanks for the speedy reply! I was off trolling another forum and found this post which seems to indicate that
the 1130 does have discrete on/off. (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/mboard/rc-discrete/thread.cgi?keywords=2929&highlight=pioneer|1130) (obviously, I can't actually test it). There are discrete codes for on and off; I'm using them in my Pronto remote. You can find them at RemoteCentral.com.
Actually, if you can use them in this form, here are the discrete power codes:

TommmyJ 01-25-06, 11:25 AM triplefffcalgary, I have the Pioneer PDK-TS12 swivelling stand for my 4360. In the manual it also states a TS10? which may not swivel, I believe the Elite 930 stand may fit the 4360 as well(it is all black instead of silver. The PDK-TS12 is the correct matching stand as per Pioneer Canada sales dept.. It retails for around $300.00 CDN but I bought mine for around $200.00. Looks very nice and fairly easy to install. Hope this helps.
MaliciousBraham 01-25-06, 01:01 PM A good resource for finding out what part numbers come oem is at the following:
http://parts.pioneerelectronics.com/
You input a model number ( 4360 for example ), then you can browse the available parts that are associated with that model.
The PDK-TS10 is shown to be associated with 4360/5060 and the 61's of each.
The elite stands will fit also ( PDK-1013 ), and is associated with 930/1130.
I believe there is a post waaay back in the thread that 5050/1120 stands will work also, but I am unsure of the models numbers. Those could be figured out with a little thought through the site I linked. (Tip, put in PDK as the search entry :))
AquosS2k 01-25-06, 01:17 PM I think I can ask questions about pricing as long as i dont mention the vendor right?
I saw the PRO-930HD on sale for..[EDIT].
Considering the benefits of buying from a local reputable retailer, would you guys agree this is a good deal? I know I can purchase online for a bit less though.
Any opinions are welcome!

Are they all basically the same? TVA seemed to recommend Peerless basically due to its popularity. What do you guys think? Also I will take any advice on the installation procedure.. (Do You think I can mount the mount prior to the arrival of the panel or do I really need the panel to get the proper placement on the wall? )

my experience with peerless... if you browse around the areas linked above, there is also some other mount discussion
Hello 1130 owners!!!!!
I have a good price from Tweeter ane Best Buy on the 1130 and I want to close this deal soon.
Am I going to be screwed by Pioneer's new plasma that has 1080p... They say it's going to be 10k... What's the point if there is not content.. I am not going to hook up my computer to it... It's for movies and some gaming via Xbox 360..
Also, where is a good place to find an entertainment center that will not cost almost as much as the t.v.
Malvoe1 01-25-06, 04:36 PM FYI, my media box was picked up by the service center and waiting on 2 new fans (b/c of high fan noise). Hopefully they will be done before the weekend. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Yes it does, many people here have done the same thing.

I have a new in box stand that came with my 5060 I purchased two weeks ago. I have a wall mount so I do not need the stand. I sent you a PM reply if you need a stand.
watsoncj 01-25-06, 07:54 PM I am/was almost ready to buy the Pioneer 1130. The today I was at Tweeter and they had a Panasonic along side of the Pioneer and the Panasonic was definately sharper. The Pioneer had better contrast and colors but the Panny picture seemeed to show more detail. I couldn't get them to let me play with the adjustments and they said that all the displays were on factory settings(not sure if I believe that). Anyhow I guess I am wanting to know if the Pioneer picture can be made as detailed or sharp as the Panasonic. Wanting to pull the trigger, and can't really get the Panasonic I would order. I guess I could wait until the 600Us come out but I would love to love the Pioneer.
Thanks

What are the proper settings for CTI and the two noise reduction options on the 4360? I honestly can't really see the difference from them.
From the description, it seems like CTI might add artifacts so I've been keeping it turned off. For DNR and MPEG, I've been using:
Xbox 360: both off
DVDs and high quality HD broadcasts: both low
HD broadcasts with compression artifacts: both mid
Honestly, the only difference at all I've been able to see is that DNR and MPEG smoothed over some very very tiny details on a distant mountain in Dead or Alive 4. The change is something that's only even visible from less than a foot away....completely imperceptible from my normal 7 foot view distance.
If anyone can shed some light on what these actually do to the image and what they should be set on for the various sources, I'd be appreciative.
Also, does anyone know if you can adjust colors individually in the service menu? It seems like the proper color temp falls somewhere between Mid and Low.

When you say "more detailed", do you mean more three dimensional, like the Panny had more depth to the image?

If they were both on factory settings (Vivid mode), then yes the Panasonic would look better as vivid on the Pioneer is no where near what it should/can do. Trust me when I say that the Panasonic xxPX50/500 series has nothing on the Pioneer Elite 1130.
Luckily my local Tweeter always calibrate their displays. They have the 42" and 50" PX500s right beside the Pioneer 930 and 1130. Every single time I go there, the Elites look better.
The Panasonics are good, but by no means are they close to performing like the Elites...especially when the Elites are calibrated by someone who knows what they are doing.
watsoncj 01-25-06, 09:17 PM Thanks Scolo and D-Nice.
Scolo...detailed or sharp. The hairs and wrinkles on a face seemed to stand out more.
D-Nice...so you would say that I can get the Pioneer not only to look as good as the Panasonic but better? I really like the Elite and it has a lot of plusses over the Panasonic and the picture was still great. Not to mention you can actually get one. Thanks for your input.

I agree, I was at Tweeter yesterday and saw a 50inch 1130 Pioneer next to a Panasonic 42 inch. The Pioneer had a better picture eventhough it was larger. I dont' know what model the panasonic was but it was over 3k so I am sure it was one of their top models.

I think you can get it to look considerably better. When I was closely scrutinizing the Panasonic, it did look very sharp, but it was sharp in an image-enhanced type way. With decently calibrated settings, there's no question that the processing/scaling in the Pioneer is miles ahead of the Panasonic. The colors/features/aesthetics are also clearly superior. Also, the stock speakers on the Pioneer are much better if you were planning on using them.
The reasons to go Panasonic are price and possibly black level. The blacks are close to the same, although I'd say Panasonic has darker if I had to pick one. However, that also comes at the cost of the well chronicled black level shift. There's not really a right or wrong answer. I carefully considered both Panny and Pio last week when I was buying and I think they're appropriately priced for what they offer. It's just a matter of how much you're willing to pay for incremental gains in features and PQ.
TheSweetSeat 01-25-06, 11:10 PM I need to ask you 5060/1 owners about the connections....now the rear of the monitor, NOT the box has 2 hdmi connections, correct? That means if you were going to put the monitor display over a fireplace for example, you do not need to use the propietary pioneer cable if you ran a long hdmi cable or two...one for dss another for hd-dvd, etc do you? Or do you control the monitor via the box with the remote? Reason for asking is that Pioneer sells/makes a longer propietary cable but it is several hundred dollars. Anyone with more info or knowledge to share on this? If I were to have a directv htdv receiver and got htdv from directv, not over the air, such as the Atlanta, GA. market now has DirecTV HDTV local channels, then I can send it through the HDMI Cable and not necessarily need the box. I am just thinking outloud b/c I do not have it yet to find out for myself, as it comes in at BB Friday (5061) and I would like have the necessary cables already on the way so I can have them by Fri/Sat.
Thanks!
Nick
Watsoncj,
The reason I asked about the image depth is because of something I witnessed lately. Like you, I am very close to buying the 1130HD. However, on a recent visit to a B&M store they had the Panny 42px50u and the Pio 4361 side by side (unfortunately the 1130HD was in another room next to some Samsungs which I would'nt consider anyway). What I did notice was the Panny seemed to have an almost 3D look to it compared with the 4361 when they were both being feed the same HD signal. This difference wasn't subtle, it was "eyepopping". I really want to buy the 1130HD, but this really gives me pause. Others in this forum have said they have experienced similar viewings of Pannys. Anyone else here notice this? Is it because the Panny has better blacks (and hence a better contrast ratio)? If I had not noticed this on my last visit I probably would have the 1130HD on its way already. ( And yes you can probably tell which store I visited by the Pio's model #)
Thanks,
Scott
Scolo, I have seen the two TVs side by side in three different stores and my experience was the exact opposite of yours. On the mediocre in-store feed, the Pioneer popped more at each location. It wasn't a massive amount (ie, if the Pio is a 10, the Panny is a 9). However, when I got the Pioneer home, I was floored by how strong the 3D effect was when watching the Steelers-Broncos game. I don't think you'll be dissapointed with either TV.

HDMI ports are on the MR, not the panel. You need the proprietary cable, but there are ways of getting it cheaper (if you mean that you need the cable longer than the default 3m cable included). Search through this thread and you will find your answer (search function).
The IR receiver is on the panel, not the MR, so you can store the MR in an enclosed space and the remote will still work.

Sounds like your sources are impeccable. DNR and MPEG are ways of improving non-ideal signals for a minimal loss of detail. I can see the benefit in MPEG in poor dvd transfers and poorly encoded broadcasts. I've found the DNR to help with poor OTA signals. If your signals are ideal, there is no reason to turn them on. CTI is "color transient improvement" and smooths transitions in sharp color changes. Helpful in analog signals, where the conversion to digital causes issues in color transitions. I keep it on all the time, even though I havent seen any benefit when watching full digital signals.
*edit: DNR helps with "mosquito noise" at the cost of a small bit of fine detail.
MPEG helps with compression artifacting in bad transfers, again costing fine detail. Once you see the material that is benefitted by these settings, you will understand the usefullness of them.
Also, does anyone know if you can adjust colors individually in the service menu? It seems like the proper color temp falls somewhere between Mid and Low.
I have the 1130 so I cant help on this one.
Well gentleman...I was able to fix my 5060HD. As you know, it was accidently disabled when I removed the media box cover. Under a hunch, I tried to enter the service menu. Sure enough, I got in. From there, I didn't really see anything that stuck out, but I was able to figure out the key sequence to get the television unlocked. I'm a happy camper now. If this happens to anyone here, shoot me a PM and I'll let you know how to fix it. Now, I just need to get rid of the green push. If anyone knows the exact menu item, let me know by PM. Thanks.

Thats interesting that it locked you out... so you tried to run the tv without the cover on the box, right? I would think if you took the cover off while the tv was unplugged, and replaced it before powering back on, it would never know.
And this also requires some sort of pressure switch inside the box as well...
hmmm...
I feel like I read somewhere on AVS that someone chose a 5060 over the Elite because he was going to get it calibrated and had been told that 5060=1130 when it's professionally calibrated. (I can't find the post now.) That seems counter-intuitive to me. Couldn't a callibrator do more with 5 colors to play with than with 3? But if he's right, that makes 5060 way more attractive. Can anyone shed some light on this?
dcpmark 01-26-06, 08:36 PM I'm not positive, but I THINK all the different individual color settings that are available to the end user for the 1130 are available to the professional calibrator in the 5060 service menu. I thought I saw them while I was poking around in there. While you can more easily adjust these yourself with the 1130, a professional calibration may result in a very similar picture, but don't forget to add the cost of the calibration in comparing the two: $300-$500.

I'll let you know in the next few weeks, Gregg Loewen will be visiting me soon to calibrate my 5060 and I will get the details.
I was told by an ISF professional calibrator who has done a 5060 and I think an 1130, that the color temp adjustments are in the SM but not the color management adjustments and they are only available on the 1130 in the user menu. However he also said that that if red and blue colors are on, but green is over saturated, like in the Home Theater review of the 5060, it is difficult to correct as the color management controls shift the CIE triangle around, not just one color. This is probably the reason why the reviewer in the Home Theater review was able to set the grey scale to 6500K but did nothing to fix the oversaturated green issue. However color management feature still might be useful in some cases, as it from the reviewer comments in the Sound and Vision review of 1130, where it he said it was useful in removing the minor color accuracy issues he found.
The comment by another member that if you buy an 1130, you will some how avoid needing to get it ISF calibrated, is not necessarily true. This is because unless you have a colorimeter to measure color accurately and know what adjustments to make to correct the errors, it is kind of a crap shoot. A few people have a knack for making adjustments like this by eye, but you would probably end up spending way more of your valued time trying to get it right then to just pay an ISF professional $300 and you know it is right. I think the nice thing about the 1130 is that it allows you to do some minor tweaks after it is calibrated to tailor it to your preferences, that may not be possible with the 5060.
dcpmark 01-27-06, 12:07 AM An interesting thought....what makes an 1130 an 1130? Can you simply take an 1130 Media Receiver and connect it to a 5060 panel, giving you all the extra adjustments of the 1130? I'm assuming of course both use the same connectors between the MR and the panels.......

There was a previous post in an earlier thread that the media boxes are not compatable with each other's panels.
dcpmark 01-27-06, 01:15 AM Well, so much for that thought.....
I really don't get all the debate over whether to get the 1130 over the 5060. Unless availability is an issue. I do not know if my area is drastically different, but around here the two sets are very close in price. When you are spending this much money on a television, why not spend a few hundred more and get the top of the line? I think the extra year of the warranty alone justifies this. Just my 2 cents.

Scott
I wish the 930 or 1130 were available in Ohio. No one that I know of has them in stock and don't expect any until March. I agree with you they seem so close in price now if available get the Elite model.

When I was shopping a few weeks ago here in Los Angeles, there was a $1400 differential between the best price I could find on the 1130 and the best price I could find on the 5060. And I checked EVERYWHERE, including local board sponsors. I ended up getting a 5061 for a $1200 price differential because it came with the wall mount AND they had a 3-year no-interest financing deal. Saving $1200 is nice, but the financing deal sealed it for me.
Glashub 01-27-06, 10:43 AM There was a $1700 difference between what I could get an 1130 for locally and what I could get the 5060 for through a forum sponsor. I went with the 5060 for 4 reasons:
1. The price difference was too big to gloss over.
2. I will probably want to upgrade in a couple of years.
3. All of the additional tweaker features on the Elite sound nice but I'm not a tweaker. Also, the coloration and the quality of the picture changes from channel to channel and DVD to DVD. It is lost on me how granular color adjustment capabilites are an add value in a situation like this. In other words would I tweak every channel to get right only to get the urge to surf some more?
4. I could get the 5060 ISF calibrated 4 times or once a year for 4 years for the price difference.
Maybe I'm missing something but it seems the Elite would be great for me if it were dedicated to movie watching but it's not. Anyways that is my logic (rationalization?) for going with the 5060.
dcpmark 01-27-06, 11:43 AM By the way, my experiences here in LA reflect both the fact that some retailers seem willing to sell the 5060/5061 at a nice discount from MSRP and a lack of willingness of any retailers to give much of a discount on the 1130.
Hi,
I got my 1130 a couple months ago, and I'm finally trying to tweak it with my Denon 3910. I think that 480p from my 3910 looks the best into the 1130, but I can't use this mode (at least through HDMI) because the Input menu that appears in the top right of the 1130's display won't go away :(
If I select 720p or 1080i on the 3910, the Input menu shows the selection, then disappears after a couple of seconds. But with 480p (the 3910 won't do 480i over HDMI), the Input menu just stays there, overlaying the movie. I didn't want to see how long it would stay on (I was afraid of burn-in), but it was on for several minutes. Very frustrating!
The one thing I do notice about the Input display that's different for 480p is that the Size (Full, Wide, etc.) never turns green like it does for a couple of seconds with the other resolutions. I don't know if this is significant or not.
I've tried hitting the display button for the 1130, but the Input menu just flickers off and on. Turning the 3910 off and on makes no difference. The 3910 shows that the 480p HDMI connection is set and the handshake with the 1130's ok.
I've looked through both the 1130 and 3910 manuals, and searched the boards here, but I can't figure this problem out. It's probably something stupid I'm doing, but I guess I'm too stupid to realize it :)
Thanks for any pointers in the right direction.
Mike
MaliciousBraham 01-27-06, 03:42 PM I have not noticed this "green" feature, I think my text is always white, except i've seen "mono" in green on a tuner channel before... I will look for it tonight, but still, if all the handshaking is ok, the input screen should go away.
I would schedule a service appt or call the store where you purchased and have them look.
Also may want to try going to a store and playing with a display model to see if it does the same thing as your personal one. (Sometimes the problems description gets "lost in translation" from one person to the next, so I always do as much as possible to troubleshoot things myself as I know exactly what to look for.)
But my first inclination is something is either wrong with the 1130 480p input or the Denon's 480p output. Have you tried component 480p also?
Hi everyone
I just replace my PDP 5040 for the PDP 5060, what surprise when I notice that the media box can not be set up vertical as old PDP and Elite models, someone knows if thus change is due tech reasons? or is just to save some money taken out the media box stand......... Please tell me if is possible to get the media box stand and just use it with the 5060 media box (R06U). I hope I won't have to change all me decoration due this fact.

Thanks for the response MB. I have not tried component yet, but I did swap the HDMI ports with my Moto cable box. Unfortunately, I still have the same problem with the other HDMI input. The cable box is putting out 480i, and the 1130 recognized it correctly.
I'll try component next, but I have a suspicion that it's a setting on the 3910 that's not letting the 1130 "lock".
rmb1035 01-27-06, 04:45 PM An interesting thought....what makes an 1130 an 1130? Can you simply take an 1130 Media Receiver and connect it to a 5060 panel, giving you all the extra adjustments of the 1130? I'm assuming of course both use the same connectors between the MR and the panels.......
dcpmark,
The media receiver is what makes it an 1130. I remember reading a post here on AVS where a member who had bought a 5060/61 from a store opened the box and found that he had the panel for the 5060/61 and the media receiver for an 1130. (The pioneer factory had screwed up and packed the box that way.) He hooked them together and they worked fine and he had all of the "extra" features that only come with the 1130.

That's odd... my input display never turns green, no matter what the input or the screen setting. Nor have I heard of anyone else's turning green.
MaliciousBraham 01-27-06, 06:56 PM I just checked my "mono" statement, and I have to correct myself, it is RED, not green. So I have never seen any green text or display either...
Now this is very odd! Both my HDMI connections' stretch mode indicators turn to green before the Input graphic disappears (except for my previously mentioned 480p with my 3910). They start out white (i.e. "FULL" is displayed in white), then "FULL" turns to green for a couple of seconds, then the whole Input mode graphic (Input 3/1080i/FULL) goes away.

Ah. My interesting thought has returned.......thanks.
AHA! I figured it out! I needed to turn off Auto-Size in the 1130's Option menu to get rid of the Input graphic in 480p mode. Why, I'll never know.
Whew! Trying times indeed :)
In Northern New Jersey I noticed tonight(Friday-Jan.27) a price difference of only $200 between the 4360 and the 930.
Glashub 01-27-06, 09:15 PM I just got my 5060 from Beyond Plasma. The box it came in was in perfect condition and the TV is perfect so far. Everything went very smoothly and ahead of schedule. I've got to tell you that my first impression is that the picture quality is dramatically better than on the 5050 I just sold. I'm glad I made the switch. My intial questions are about the TV guide function and how to set the audio. After set up does the cable screen come up before a picture is shown? Secondly, if I click the "don't remind me again" button, how do I enable it again some time down the road if I do want to use it? Finally, can you remind me again if Audio should be set to digital? I am using a pre-pro.
Thanks in advance.

I leave auto-size to off in my setup, so I switched it to on, and sure enough, the text for the size is GREEN.
You werent crazy after all :D
I cant try 480p for you in my current setup though.

The guide does come up by default. You can disable it in the TVGuide menus. The instructions are in this thread, several times.
If I am understanding your second ques right, if you do not setup the tvguide, you can go back later and set it up by pressing the tvguide button on remote.
As far as audio, just try them both after you hook it up, one will work, one wont.
Glashub 01-28-06, 07:28 AM MB, thanks. I did a search for "tv guide" in this thread and came up with every reference to to TV in the thread. Which meant volumes of reading after a 60 hour week. I was just fried last night.
Ray Cathode 01-28-06, 09:13 AM For those of you like myself that have had a problem with entering the Service Mode on your 5060; I have found that I had to disable "auto guide" to be able to access the SM. Worked the first time I tried it. Finding how to delete scanned channels and then finding this tidbit have removed any complaints that I have had about this display.
Hope this helps someone.
millsjq 01-28-06, 10:53 AM I read the previous posts that gave the discrete codes for on and off. However I am at a loss on how I can enter them in my MX-700 remote. It has the capability to inport cff files, and I check the pioneer web site under the custom install section and it list a link for CFF files, but the page is blank. Can some one send me a CFF file if it exists or point me in the direction for solving my issue.

My cable provider does not offer ABC in HD. The thought of watching the Super Bowl in SD on my 1130 is starting to freak me out. I need assistance in hooking up an antenna to see if I can pull in ABC.
Currently, my cable signal is split into Input 1 & Input 2 so that I can have PIP. I read in the manual that the antenna should go into "Ant B In". Do I also need to unplug the componen cables from the cable TV feed that go into Input 2?
Thanks in advance as A-V hookup is not my strong suit by any means.

To do what I think you want to do - use the 1130's built-in decoder to get the digital ABC feed OTA via your antenna - you want to connect the antenna to "Ant A". Ant B doesn't have digital decoding support, only Ant A. Since your cable is going to inputs other than "Ant A" this shouldn't be a problem for you.

Yes, I am trying to get ABC in HD via OTA. Currently, my "ANT A" is occupied as my cable signal is split into 2 feeds for the ability to use PIP. But, I a just need ABC as a one-time deal to watch the Super Bowl.
So, it sounds like I need to unplug the cable connection that is currently in "Ant A" & plug my OTA antenna in there. Do I then need to do a channel scan or something after that? I assume I also view OTA by choosing the "ANT" input on the remote?

jackI picked this CCF file (http://www.remotecentral.com/cgi-bin/files/dl.cgi?file=ccf_templates/televisions/pio-plas-pdp503cmx.zip&area=pronto)somewhat at random from RemoteCentral.com, but it says it has discrete on and off. If the link doesn't work, you can search on that site for any Pioneer plasma (or rear projection set; they use the same codes) for a CCF file.
gordongordo 01-28-06, 12:05 PM Here's a link to a good thorough test of the Pioneer Elite 1130, with a caution about the price.

I figured it out, thanks Karl. I get a pretty strong ABC OTA signal. Now, my problem is that I do not have the 1130 speakers attached. So, I can either watch the game in HD with the radio on & deal with probable delay issues or watch in SD.

I use the optical output for 5.1 sound.

eelton,
Thanks for the suggestion! As I said, I am pretty clueless on this stuff. Currently, my digital audio cable goes from the Pio media box to my DVR. I did not realize I could solve the problem this way. I will check it out! I assume it's obvious where the optical audio cable goes into the receiver?

I am all set now. I went to the back of my receiver & discovered that my installer had 2 digital audio cables installed - 1 to my DVR & the other to the MR. I just had to choose a different receiver function & I now have OTA audio.
Looking much more forward to the Super Bowl now!

mswlogo 01-28-06, 04:37 PM Just got a 4360 the other day and have already gone into the room when the system was supposed to be in standby mode to find the blue power light blinking 12 times followed by three seconds off and then 12 times again (looping)....is this normal? Is it trying to download TV Guide info or something? The red standby light on the panel is on solid as you'd expect.
No, this is not normal. That's exactly the problem I'm having and it does not matter if you disable TV-Guide on power up or not (which I've always had off). The Pioneer MR is defective on some TV-Guide broadcasts. If you completely defeat the TV-Guide (by setting zip code to 00000 and say no to do you have cable and do you have OTA) it will stop the blue flashing light problem. Also after you have shutoff TV-Guide unplug everything and plug it back in again. Once the system is corrupted by TV-Guide it stays corrupted until you reboot. With this work around you will of course have no TV-Guide either. It depends on your local TV-Guide broadcast if you stumble into this problem or not. My Sony DVR TV-Guide works perfectly on the same TV-Guide broadcasts. Please call Pioneer and complain so they will fix this problem.
The problem is very random and may go weeks without a problem and then fail 5 times in 2 days.
Just pulled the trigger on the 1130, have to wait until end of Feb for delivery as they are on back order. Having sent to the new house so I'm not too put off..
This thread had alot of great info to make a decision. I know I can't post price but I did very well going between Magnolia and Tweeter... They seem much more negotiable than before..
I am going back and forth on set up... Are you most of you putting them in entertainment centers or are you wall hanging.. I feel a large entertainment center will really detract from the Plasma.. Pro and cons to wall hanging??

I originally was going to just leave it in the stand and put it on the credenza. But I realized it looked a lot cooler on the wall. Plus, I could move the credenza out (for new hookups, etc) if I needed to without disturbing the television. Oh, and did I mention the wife wanted it on the wall. Yeh, that was the deciding factor.

Place it on the wall. "Floating" on the wall is the best look. It's a very functional set up due to the media receiver- all cables being hooked into this. There's no need to get to any wires or inputs on the plasma after it's set up..
Have good info on a wall mount on the 1130. I think I would still like it out a few inches so the crendenza doesn't stick out too far from the Plasma..
First: Thanks to everyone on this forum for incredibly useful info on the Pios. This is my second plasma purchase (moved the Pio 5030 - 3.5 years old - up to the bedroom), and I continue to learn from the experiences of our more informed forum members - doubt that I would have taken the plunge if not for the availability of this forum.
Second: For some immediate observations, nits & picks:
A. No dead pixels, no objectionable noise from media box fan and no discernible hum or buzz from the panel (at 7 - 11 feet).
B. This monitor blows away the 5030 (obvious to many here, I'm sure, but before I could do an immediate A-B comparison, the differences did not seem that great. That's why I believe it important, when comparing video monitors, or audio equipment, to do A-B, with the same equipment connected to each item under evaluation, on site.) (I have not switched over to HDMI; everything is hooked up component as it was with the 5030 - cable card and hdmi equipped Moto box due to arrive Friday).
C. The picture - out of the box, and/or inputting the settings available here, is amazing - Either viewing HD cable or DVD's (Panasonic RP91, outputting 480i - a change from the 480p to which I outputted with the Pio 5030, and I am greatly impressed with the video processing contained in the 1130, obviously much better than the 5030) the depth, dimensionality (if there is such a word), black levels and detail, AND absence of noise in the picture is a joy (this absence of noise also blew me away, as I never really found its presence objectionable with the 5030).
D. Use as a computer monitor - I have had my Dell Inspiron 4150 hooked into the 5030 for the past 3 years - I output at 800 x 600 - the 1130 does at least as well as the 5030 did - which is really very, very well, indeed. I had read somewhere on this forum or within this thread a few caveats about using the 1130/5060 as a monitor - such has not proven to be the case - it functions exceptionally well as a computer monitor - and with the new pip capabilities, I can watch through the built-in digital tunerd and compute at the same time. (Note: you can't do pip with more than one external source at a time :( )
E. Nits & Picks:
- I find the "Home Gallery" function to be next to useless - its 4 megapixel limitation ( I have a 7 megapixel digital camera and I'm not going to down rez simply to plug in to the tv) is a little inexplicable given the otherwise high tech features of this set. Also, even if I take the 7 mp pix and down size to 4, the home gallery function still won't display them (something about processing on a pc).
- On sunny days with one of the corner shades open, I find reflections off of the glossy black frame to be annoying - although my spouse does like the look of this tv - so I guess its a reasonable compromise.
- No on-panel controls - the 5030 allowed power, inputs, and volume to be changed on-panel.
I look forward to experimenting with HDMI, up-scaling DVD players, etc - as well as arriving at my own settings with AVIA and VE - will report back on those observations, as appropriate.
Again - thanks to everyone on this forum!
LIY :D

I'd take a little glare for spousal approvel any day of the week.
Congrats on you new purchase.
