View Full Version : "Cold Case" on CBS
nashvillecat 10-10-05, 06:04 AM Last night, 10/9 ("Bad Night"), I felt chills down my spine throughout this episode. Once when we flashback in Jefferies' mind to see him and his wife walking away from the car in the pouring rain at night, smiling , and again, a bigger chill when Rush sees Angus and Vicky swurving to miss the truck. This was a paramount show!
Although I miss the presence of Scotty's internal anger and frustrations, ( we definately saw more of this last year), I do like the fact that other cast members are getting more camera time. Th feeling Jefferies must have had when he's standing there in the pouring rain, looking down at his wife who was just killed by a hit-and-run...
brrrr, it's cold.

Luckily I had a good solid OTA signal coming in from WCBS-DT last night and it was fine.
No sound problems noted via D* in LA.

DrCrawn 10-10-05, 05:34 PM I did not enjoy the episode very much. Is it just me or did they never explain why using the jaws of life broke that woman's spine? It did not make sense to me. The accident victim was conscience during the roll over, why didn't she know that during the "rescue" something bad happened and her fireman husband was responsible? Maybe I was too loopy, but this episode didn't make much real sense to me. Cold Case can do much better.

Perhaps they didn't give too many details about ghe outcome of the jaws of life because it was really only the fireman that knew all these years. If it was evident that the jaws of life crippled Vicki, then what's the mystery.

taz291819 10-11-05, 11:01 AM At least it was nice seeing some of Halloween in HD, though it looked like an upconvert.

So a car flips in an awful accident, the passenger is relatively ok, then during a unnecessary jaws of life rescue, somehow her spine gets crushed? And nobody seemed to notice? Not the other rescue workers, not the driver of the motorcycle who was standing there watching the whole rescue...not the other girl who was on the motorcycle. Yawn. Cold Case is a wonderful show, but this episode was weak.
Was it my imagination, or was the first Cold Case this year in Dolby Digital 5.1, but then the last episode went back to 2.0?

This one was 5.1 too (I watched it last night).
nashvillecat 10-12-05, 12:22 PM This one was 5.1 too (I watched it last night).
Other than when they flash it on the screen at the beginning, is there any way tell it's in 5.1?
CPanther95 10-12-05, 12:24 PM Other than when they flash it on the screen at the beginning, is there any way tell it's in 5.1?
Listen for discreet info in the rears. Also, your DD receiver should have a DD 5.1 flag of some sort.
What they flash on the screen and what your receiver says can both be misleading in some cases. For example my ABC station sends 5.1 audio all the time even for programs and commercials that aren't 5.1 which makes them sound pretty bad. Your station might be sendng 2.0 audio during 5.1 programs by accident. Many stations have enough trouble flipping the switch for HD and care even less what kind of audio they're sending you.
I felt anger throughout this episode because it was not presented in HD in Columbus, Ohio I'm guessing that a football game earlier in the day caused Cold Case not to start at 8pm (???). When that happens, many affiliates don't have the ability to tape-delay HD programming (yet). Ours (WHIO) was also not in HD.
This one was 5.1 too (I watched it last night).
Interesting ... it was definitely 2.0 on my system. Maybe a glitch at the cable company.
Last year this show was in 2.0, which I found surprising since they rely so heavily on the soundtrack.
Still it doesn't beat CSI's use of DD 5.1 ... they set the bar.
nashvillecat 10-17-05, 05:58 AM Not one of my faves, but still a good show. PQ was very good, sound OK. I actually enjoyed Saturday night's rerun better :)

YoungC55 10-17-05, 12:26 PM Last nights episode was good.
Not the best though :p
Gary McCoy 10-17-05, 02:05 PM Last night's episode was my last - season pass cancelled on the old TiVo.
The premise is worn out, IMHO. They need to mix it up some, vary the plots a little. Last night they solved a murder from 1945 and I just didn't care. This group of detectives has a better record on cold cases than any squad on TV does on current cases, it's not credible.
I really enjoyed the show the first half of last season, but now it's gone, I've better things to do.
Gary
I believe it was revealed near the end of the show that the boss of the fireman knew all the time that the rookie had screwed up while using the jaws of life. The rookie/later-to-be-husband was a protégé who was allowed to use the jaws only because his mentoring boss admired how well the rookie was coming along. You might wonder who he was actually covering up for, the rookie or himself. But the ending, with the succession of three suspects for who the killer actually was, really held my attention.
I contribute enough to my own share of being confused by plot twists,
but I feel that, by the end of the show, enough had been revealed about the accident which paralyzed the girl.
I got a great bonus at 8 pm, when 60 Minutes aired, and Cold Case was also delayed by and hour--due to NFL football. A test pattern filled my screen only moments after 60 Minutes began, and stayed on for 43 seconds. (Then 60 Minutes resumed broadcasting.) “NEW YORK TX HD” showed across my screen the whole time the pattern was on. I recorded it without trying, because I had my DVR already set to record Cold Case at 8 pm.
I’ve been hoping to capture a good pattern, and now I have one recorded! (Cox Cable doesn’t carry HDNet or HDNet Movies, so I don’t get their pattern.) Now we’ll see if I did a decent job correcting for color without a pattern. That is the reason for using it, right? Can I use the patern to check anything else?

Like other hot shows like Lost, Prison Break, Invasion, CSI's are all ultra- realistic....we love them because they are not like my everyday life....how many CSI cases have gone unsolved?

DrCrawn 11-28-05, 03:38 PM Pretty good episode last night, even if it was full of tired stereotypes...
Can anyone explain this one to me (non HD related) ??
In the storage area where they keep the case files, all of the ones on the shelves are marked "H65-1234" or something. The "H" meaning "homicide", "65" for the year, and the remaining numbers some assigned number. The cases they work on are labeled "M72-1234". Note the "M". Presumably that's for "murder", but why the difference ??
Jimbo Moran 11-28-05, 05:18 PM M for missing perhaps? Since they just discovered the body.

One thing exceptional about Cold Case is that it doesn’t try too hard. It has a main plot, and often as not, allows the viewer to be fooled along with the detectives while they follow and eliminate some false leads. Last night, for example, who didn’t think that Stump was the dog and deli owner’s killer? But no. Maybe it was the illegal alien assistant who had been found guilty in the first place? Hold on. It was probably the unscrupulous, tough guy Latino money lender? Maybe. On no, the deli owner’s own son, we learned, was a real dork with ‘anger management issues,’ and he did it.
The single story line contrasts with most other crime shows. They want to make each episode a blockbuster, so they weave maybe three plots together. The net result is, that dilutes efforts to dig deeper into any one plot. And you had better take notes. An example is the last Crossing Jordan. I’ve watched it three times, and I’m still not sure how the dead body fits into the story.
Jim

Jim
Crossing Jordan to me is like a crime-lite show, a perfect fit for the silliness that goes on in Las Vegas, which it has had crossover episodes with.
Stereodude 12-19-05, 09:34 PM Last night's episode was a complete mess. Here in Detroit the start of the episode wasn't in HD. They interrupted the episode for the President's speech, and then they finished the episode in SD. :(

Nearly the same here in Cleveland, and likely for the same reason...a slightly over-length football game. (Browns down here, Lions up there.)
The difference - WOIO-DT *tried* to switch to Cold Case's HD feed, but realized it was 10 minutes ahead of their post-Browns game CBS feed, so a minute or so later they dumped back to upconverted/stretched HD the rest of the way.
I'm assuming A) there was no HD feed of Cold Case that matched the exit of the Browns game (or Lions game in your case) and B) WOIO has no HD delay capabilities, ditto with WWJ-DT up your way.

YoungC55 05-22-06, 09:02 PM This past sundays episode 5/21/06 titled 'Joseph' was odd i guess. How Det. Lilly Rush was into Joseph so much. It was not like her, as her coworkers said.

I'm amazed at how such an intricate storyline as the one's for Cold Case can be put together.
Does anyone know how long it takes to make one episode?
I know I asked this a while back, but, is there any notion of a DVD release of this show yet?

Don't think it is. I did a quick google search and found this

This weeks episode was good. The ending was happy, for the two girls.
We did not see any personal life/information for the cast of Cold Case this episode. Glad racisim has changed through-out the years.

nashvillecat 11-13-06, 01:15 PM Ok, so I never heard of the referene of "critter" before. I may have been a bit young to the planet back then, but I think I would have remembered that term. Last week it was "key party" (which I never heard of before), and this week it is "critter".
Hey, did anyone notice when the flashback scenes were done, the picture was like they were rolling a camera? Kinda neat. Wasn't sure if there was meaning to that or if the producer just wanted to do something different.
Great episode, however. No one dies afrer all!

(loved the tunes they played, as well.)

Must have been a Philly thing. Never heard it in DC.
Key party on the other hand I have heard of and actually had some friends whose parents had them. That was in the late 60's though and in a very affluent area in the Virginia suburbs. (not my neighborhood ;) )
(music was really good this show)

Excellent episode. Had me guessing until the end.
YoungC55 03-26-07, 01:34 PM Last nights episode was touching at the end.
How his wife finally knew he was innocent. Too bad they could not live together in happyness, since he was going to jail for the murders.
I miss the 2.35:1 ratio during flash backs.

Eh ... ok, but I saw the "creepy med assistant" twist coming from his first appearance on screen. ;)
Yeah, they didn't need to telegraph that one.
The first scene in the hospital was completely unlike Cold Case. No wide angle shots. No harsh lighting. No shots from the ceiling or the floor. No extreme closeups. No out of focus objects in the foreground. It looked like a regular TV show. :)
YoungC55 09-23-07, 03:44 PM Season Premier of Cold Case is tonight.
Episode 94, titled 'Thrill Kill'
"Recovered from the shooting, Lilly wants to convince her boss that she's ready to get back to work. The team re-opens the 1994 case of three 10-year-old kids who were beaten to death when Lilly suspects the teens convicted of the killings may have been wrongfully incarcerated."
rolltide1017 09-23-07, 06:24 PM Don't set your DVR (or add more time) because CBS never ends there NFL coverage on time and they never program a half hour bumper like Fox does. My wife loves Cold Case but gets so frustrated trying to watch it during football season.
Not in HD - switch switcher must be asleep

I normally would have to agree with you. Tonight it started on time, that is cool.

Not cool, especially on a Premier night :(
Did you try and contact your local station? Usually you can ask to speak to the Engineering Dept. and tell them to flip the switch.
HD & DD 5.1 here in Tx.
Nice to have another season.
Calling the station on Sunday night will not do you any good, no one forgot to "flip the switch".. The reason it's SD in some areas is due to football running late, the same games are not shown everywhere. The game shown in your area might run long, so your feed is delayed. The stations then use the pre-feed that CBS sends out Sunday morning, so no HD. If you station has the equipment then they will broadcast the HD feed but it is very expensive.
Overall not too bad of a show to open the season with, but they over did it with the plaid.

Really? I would still think 'somebody' at the local CBS station has to be there.
Good information.

ha.
No HD in the Minneapolis market either. They didn't even broadcast a CBS football game today but for some reason the shows where running about 15 - 20 minutes late.
YoungC55 09-24-07, 02:18 PM It was interesting how the whole? soundtrack was from Nirvana.
nashvillecat 09-24-07, 02:44 PM I don't like Lil's hair this way :(

Cool music though, I loved the last track!! (What was the name of the song at the end?)

"Come As You Are" by Nirvana. The whole epsiode had some great music.
1994 was the year Cobain killed himself.

But you know what's really annoying is when your station *has* invested in the equipment required to catch the prefeed (as demonstrated by their 1 day delay of Y&R in HD to 9amET the following day) and *still* doesn't bother to fix the NFL/Sunday issue. Blech! :(

*The message* (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/God_is_not_Great) of last Sunday's episode was crystal clear. No questions whatsoever regarding what the writers/producers intent was, with this particular storyline.
As of late, "Cold Case" has become akin to something Aaron Sorkin would have come up with if he wrote a crime drama.
YoungC55 10-02-07, 09:18 AM It was mildly disturbing, IMO.

I'd say you were right on the money, subtle enough to not slam it in your face, but there's no doubt what the message was.

I found the 'amish jokes' that the department said to be funny.
nashvillecat 10-09-07, 02:02 PM Just curious about a couple of things...
Is this the first time on CC that we see an episode involving the Amish? Afrter all, this show does take place in PA. I've been thru this neck of the "Amish" woods.
The Amish aren't supposed to use anything that has been manufactured. How can they have taken off in a automobile? I've heard where some Amish don't even buy clothing with zippers! (zippers are made by a machine).
Really enjoy this show. I WANT THE DVD!

YoungC55 02-20-08, 09:18 AM This past week’s episode titled "Spiders" was sad.
It was interesting how the Jewish guy was a neo-Nazi himself.

Hoping Cold Case will return with new episodes in the next months.

From Fredfa's "Hot Off The Press" thread at the top of the 'HDTV Programming' thread:
TV Review
After six years,'Cold Case' is in a jam
By Verne Gay, Newsday
THE SHOW "Cold Case"
WHEN | WHERE Sunday at 9 p.m. on CBS/2.
REASON TO WATCH This could be your next-to-last chance to see this fine procedural
Plus, there are 16 Pearl Jam songs throughout Sunday's episode and the second part of this finale on May 10. There also are cameos galore - Jessica Tuck, Michael Ironside, Joe Penny, Daniel Baldwin.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT Let's start with those Pearl Jam songs, never before heard on a TV program, which also will include tracks from the band's recently released debut album, "Ten." Jennifer Johnson, a "Cold Case" executive producer, said in a statement that the catalog reflects "the journey to adulthood and disillusionment and redemption."
Music has been a large part of the "Cold Case" catalog, with past episodes embracing songs by John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Frank Sinatra and others.
Sunday's episode centers on a missing military academy cadet, Kate Butler (Maddy Curley), whose remains turn up in a grave three years after she went missing from the (formerly) all-male institution. Suspects? Just about everyone. Lilly Rush (Kathryn Morris) gets to recall some of her own painful trips down hazing lane when she was one of the first female detectives in the Philadelphia police department.
WHY FANS SHOULD WORRY Six seasons old, "Cold Case" is on the bubble, meaning it may be renewed in the next few weeks, or it may not.
BOTTOM LINE How do good shows like "Cold Case" end up in bubble purgatory? Follow the money. After six seasons on the air, with a reasonably big-name lead in Morris, this show is expensive, and big, strong networks with bench strength to spare - that would be CBS - have the luxury of saying, "Well, maybe we could do without that one." This one is good, and well produced, while all its virtues are laid out Sunday night. If CBS does say farewell, you and I know a network that would love a series with just under 11 million viewers. Anyone have Jeff Zucker's number?

Young C 10-03-09, 03:03 PM Anybody catch the season opener?
CBS's Sunday night football? went into the normal Cold Case time slot. My DVR recording was off, so I just deleted the episode. (Rather than missing the last 10 minutes of the episode.)
it was good!
Just set your DVR to record the show and the following show (which is usually the news, at least on the east coat)!
Stereodude 10-19-09, 07:24 PM So, did anyone else's CBS local forget to show Cold Case last night?
Indiana627 10-19-09, 07:40 PM I think CBS didn't air it since the Bills-Jets game when an hour and 15 minutes long.
I've read it will be shown next week.
They showed a repeat out here, the one about the freedom schools down south.
So, did anyone else's CBS local forget to show Cold Case last night?
forget?
was announced it would air next week due to length of jets game
That's good to know. I was wondering what they'd do when the late game was more than an hour late... usually that means something gets pre-empted instead of delayed.
Good to hear the west coast got a repeat (not for meanness sake) because it means they just shift everything ahead a week and somewhere down the road instead of a rerun we still get a new episode since they are behind.
forget?
was announced it would air next week due to length of jets game
When was the announcement made? I had my DVR set to record an additional 2 hrs in case the game ran over. When the preceding program (Three Rivers) ended there was a few seconds shown of the Cold Case intro, but then it went into the news. If an announcement was made during those few seconds then both my wife & I missed it.
HDTVChallenged 10-20-09, 03:00 AM When was the announcement made?
I don't know that they ever said specifically, but several times during the game, they announced that "60Min, Amazing Race and 3 Rivers, would follow the game." ... no mention of CC ... I recorded the extra hour anyway, just in case. Just the usual Sunday night ritual of triple checking the DVR setup.

They showed :
Following game
60 Minutes
Amazing Race
3 Rivers
and VERBALLY stated:
Cold Case will be seen next Sunday
they did this once so you may have missed it
Just the usual Sunday night ritual of triple checking the DVR setup.
The problem is there's no "throwaway" show (like a post-game show) scheduled at 7pm ET.
My guess is that someone high up at CBS is blocking any sensible solution. It may be that "60 minutes at 7pm ET" has a pseudo-religious significance to that person.
I happen to love 60 minutes, but I'd love it just as much if it were scheduled an hour later (at least during the football season), and I'd even be happy with CBS squeezing it down to "46 minutes" when there's a football overrun like we saw on 10/18.
I used to watch 60 minutes years ago before I got hooked on football... Football almost always screws the 60 minutes start time... so that got me out of the habit of watching.
A show like that, which often covers some good stuff... seems like it needs to be in a better timeslot so as not to get pre-empted so often.
