Why didn't you just drop the home phone service? This seems like a good time. I'm thinking about going to cell only and since I have Verizon wireless i still get a FIOS discount.
We presently have AT&T cell service. When that contract is up I'll look at switching to Verizon and then dropping the home phone service.

My wife has her cell. I have mine. We also each have our own Skype line. $5 a month per line gets unlimited long distance, caller ID, voice mail, conference calling, etc...

DC/MD should have the next "rollout" of HD's on 11/13.
How solid is that date? I just did a QAM channel scan here for the Sterling, VA CO and sometime in the past 2-3 workdays, Verizon added a bunch of, more than 20, QAM channels, most of them with 2 (encrypted) sub-channels each. I will do a detailed summary & count later. Of course, Verizon has to upgrade all the COs in the market before they can do the big HD expansion, so they may have gotten to Sterling early in the second round process. OTOH, Sterling was among the last COs to have the analog turned off and have QAM channels added in the first phase. But I take the new QAM channels as a clear sign that the expansion to 100 HD channels is in the pipeline here.

I've not done a scan on my QAM tuner before, so I have no reference point. How many QAMs would the areas that have been updated to 100 HDs typically see?

I've not done a scan on my QAM tuner before, so I have no reference point. How many QAMs would the areas that have been updated to 100 HDs typically see? Those markets should see around 100+ QAM channels in use. The 24 new channels that were added to the Sterling, VA CO (Northern VA) in the past few days are a continuous block from QAM 29 to 52 with, if my count is right, 47 sub-channels in total.

Prior to the analog shutdown, the QAM channels were in blocks with gaps from 55 to 126 (55-62,63-68,71-75 (digital locals), 83-94, 103-126). All the analog channels were in the 2-49 range. Then Verizon added 79-81 for the Olympic push of USA-HD, CNBC-HD, 2 temp channels. Here, after the analogs channels were turned off, they added QAM channels 7-12, 14-20, 22,25,26, 98, 99. The new HD channels were at 11, 14, 16-20, 25, 26, 98, 99. Then last week, 2 more QAM channels were added: 27 with 14 sub-channels (no idea what they are) and one in the local block at QAM 78 for WHUT-DT PBS 32 which is currently SD only.

Thanks for the detailed post, unfortunately I just discovered my Vizio will only show me the unencrypted channels. I know it would not be able to tune into the encrypted ones, but I was hoping it would at least show me a mapping of what was out there.

Guess I'll just need to wait until sometime in November to find out if we get the full 100 -- which I am 99% certain we will.

You should see the full rollout, but don't hold me officially to that, or AbMag will come after me. :D

Yes, here in DE, all the Premium HD's are in the old lower analog ranges, so if you've seen new QAM's fired up there, more than likely, they're following the same path for you.

News from the fiber competition: It looks like U-verse will have 123 HD channels by year end, including Voom, which will be offered for an additional fee. Eight channels went out today to test markets. Some channels will launch on Nov. 3. On Nov. 10, AT&T will roll out what amounts to its own version of the Extreme HD pricing uptick.UR, where did you hear about this? I can't find any press releases or news articles.

So far, Verizon has placed the national channels at the same QAM channels and sub-channels in all markets. At least for the east coast and middle of the country. Verizon may substitute west coast feeds at different sub-channel locations for the west coast markets, don't know. But putting all the national channels at the same QAM locations for everyone is a result of having a single Super Head End. Also a logical approach if you are starting a TV system up from scratch compared to Comcast and Time Warner which are built from the acquisition of 100s of local franchise systems with a video head end for each. So I would expect the new HD channels here will be at the same QAM sub-channels you see in DE. Once I get the rest of the HD channels, I will post a complete list of what QAM channels they are on. I have a list for the current 49 HD channels we have here.

As for AbMagfab, I expect he will first be in denial when the rest of the 100 HD channels are turned on in the Washington Metro market. Then after accepting that Verizon did indeed roll-out the promised channels before the end of 2008, he will then start complaining that either a) Verizon will never add the other HD channels or b) VHO4 will be the last market to get the other missing current national HD channels - AMC HD, Cartoon Network HD, CMT/MTV/VH1 HD, Nickelodeon HD, Spike HD, NBA TV... :D

UR, where did you hear about this? I can't find any press releases or news articles.

There is no press release, but you can check the U-verse thread for a link to the U-verse forums (which, coincidentally, are identical to Verizon's forum). The new HD pricing tier was confirmed in a mailing from AT&T to consumers, which stated that Universal HD would be moving to a new tier. Eight channels have lit up in test markets. Nov. 3 for the first update appears set.

The 123 channel thing is not a "hard" announcement. There is an obligatory "until you've heard it from AT&T, don't think it means anything" post.

Engadget has covered it. I realize people on this forum tend to be skeptical of these types of things, but that largely stems from years of false DirecTV rumors. It's a lot harder to keep secrets when you're a nationwide telco, since there's a lot of work that has to be done on the ground.

Phase 2 should be done in CA, if you have roughly 100 HDs -- local, national, and premium then phase 2 is complete.

The following was copied from:

http://www.satelliteguys.us/iptv-discussion-forum/145808-voom-uverse.html

"I was just wanting to inform everyone about some inside info I got this afternoon from a Manager.

He informed me that the Gears are churning within AT&T to get way more options released by 2Q2009 to be able to compete with other Cable and Satellite Companies alike.

The First step will be to add an additional 42 more HD Channels by the year's end (including the Voom HD Networks). The Second step will be to add HD VOD by the end of 3Q2008, which is not that far away at all. Subscription VOD type of programming should be released any day possibly he said too. They are working with InDemand to try to contract to receive their programming which includes loads more VOD, PPV, HD-PPV, HD offerings also (Mojo HD).

He did say that 1080p movies has just begun testing with their testers, but there is no release date for this at all.

As far as WHDVR, no definite date at this time right now due to some issues with the launch of this service, but should launch in the newer VHO before it does in the older VHO!

There is going to loads more SD channels added soon also he quoted as well, when those contracts can be secured.

Hope this helps out some with your wanting to know information."

This Voom information/speculation is very interesting. I am both a FiOS and Dish subscriber. I still bristle at the thought of Dish's (Charlie Ergen's) arbitrary and capricious decision to terminate the 15 Voom channels this past spring. I always enjoyed Voom. I know that they were repetitive but they were pure 24/7 non-commercial pristine PQ HD. I have always believed that Charlie's actions against Voom contained an element of personal animus towards Rainbow Media. I also get the gut feeling that Dish would love to see Voom fail before they get picked up by someone else. I hope that Voom prospers and that Charlie lives to regret his actions. Voom appearing on FiOS with its superior PQ would be a dream come true for me.

I have heard about the new Verizon FIOS internet and TV services being rolled out across the country. My question is since they are using fiber optics to transmit their signal and with giving them additional bandwidth, will Comcast be ready to compete with them for pure channel capacity?

Yes they use fiber optics and they will be provided a high bandwith by government and certain technology advances are needed.

We got 1.6 in Mass a bit ago. I don't have a HD STB, just HD DVR's and one SD STB, with a Home Media DVR serving the SD STB. I did test displaying pictures from my PC (will be used in the Holidays) and will try to test displaying home video over the same link.

One think I've seen, maybe others have too (or I'm imagining it) is that HD VOD seems to be at very high quality lately. During the first trial, it had times when it blocked a bit, but I just saw a martial arts movie (The Forbidden Kingdom) with a lot of color, high speed action and movement from bright to dark areas, and it was very impressive. No pixelation, blocking or streakiness. Was anything done in 1.6 to supercharge IPTV?

Okay,
I was waiting for today, however, as I was alluding to in previous posts, YES, Center Ice has arrived on FIOS TV!

This morning, I have "Coming Soon" sports channels in the IMG from 1475 - 1488 out of VHO8.

These will be for Center Ice. Ordering will be available next Wednesday, 10/22. All VHO's should see these show up by the end of next week.

At this time, it does not appear that the GAME-HD high def channel will be included.

I hope this makes some folks happy!

PS - NHL Network (SD and HD) should arrive in November as a nice compliment.

1475 - 1488 is now showing as Sub Sports here in SoCal. One step closer!

A little, but a bigger problem has been intermittent audio drop-outs on some HD channels. Started happening after the HD expansion here in NJ, which was over 2 months ago. Can't get Verizon to even acknowledge the problem. They kept insisting in something specific to my house and sending 3 different techs out. Guess what? With the 3rd tech we determined the drop-outs (and some video hiccups) were happening identically for me AND AT HIS HOUSE AT THE SAME TIME! Still no one addressing the problem. They actually told the repair tech that they can't escalate it because they haven't had enough complaints to confirm its a real problem!

My only question at this point is are they lying about not getting any complaints or are they just so messed internally up that they can't communicate to the correct people that there is a problem.

For those who are interested, I already have the bundle package from Verizon with the old premium tv, phone and 20/5 internet package for the bundle rate of $99. I have been reading about and saw that the Extreme HD was available here (in South Jersey). So, when I called, they upgraded me to Extreme HD for free, for the same bundle price that I was already paying, $99. They told me they will upgrade current customers for the same bundle price (or at least no increase) only if you call and only by the end of this year. They did not give me any dates when I would have the full 100 channels but I heard that would be mid November for South Jersey.

FYI, verizon updated the guide to the 1.6 guide build 6.89 last thursday. all things seem to be working good.

So true! I upgraded today to Extreme and got the 20/5 (was at 5/2) connection, a free month of HBO/cinemax, and when I inquired about the Home Media/Multi-room DVR, was given 3 months of that for free.

What I didn't know was the Home Media uses your existing 6416 which they reprogram to do all the media and multi-room stuff. I also wasn't told during the call that the multi-room function is only between a 6416 and a 2500 SD STB. Communication with a 6200 HD STB is currently not supported, according to their website http://www22.verizon.com/ResidentialHelp/FiOSTV/Receivers/Multi-Room+DVR/QuestionsOne/84882 explaining the service. That's a real bummer AFAIAC. I'll play with it for 3 mos., anyway. Does anyone know when or if they expect to support multi-room to the 6200?

If they never do, then I would wonder the economics of having the multi-room capability at $4 extra/mo. as opposed to upgrading the 6200 to a 6416 DVR at $6 extra/mo. Then I can record 4 shows simultaneously and have the extra 160 GB storage. It just doesn't make much sense to me to watch recorded HD shows on my bedroom 19" via the 2500 in SD and NOT have that capability on my HDTV in the den via the 6200 HD STB. Make sense?

I did not get the mult-room dvr set up because I decided it made more sense for me to have two HD DVRs for the extra storage and the "his" and "hers" tvs and dvrs lol

But, those who have the 1.6 guide and the Multi-room dvr have said they now watch HD content from their dvr on their HD box 6200. Correct me if I am wrong?

I have a wireless desktop. I had 15/2 and signed up for 20/5. I checked my speed and was getting around 15.5/2 which seemed low to me but given that I was over 15 download I assumed I had been upgraded. I called and found out that the order did not go through and they upgraded me today to 20/5. But now on four speed test here are my results, all in my local city of Dallas:

Speedtest 14.2/4.5
Speakeasy 13.5/4.5
testmy.net 15.3/3.9
Verizon speed test 16.6/4.7

So I find this all very odd. I was getting better download speed prior to upgrade. My computer is tweaked to optimum settings. Any thoughts or anyone else experience this behavior?

Thanks - to you and billnj. I am relieved. I still have to road test this before deciding to come to the camp billnj is in where 2 DVRs fit better. $2 a month for the added storage and recording flexibility are tempting me.

I want to see what convenience the PC connection gives for pics and music. I figure the 3 months free will get me through the holidays when that might be an interesting thing to have to play with. I also wonder what Verizon has in mind down the line for the Home Media features.

All of my computers are wireless, desktops and laptops. I realize that I will have some drop off because of that. My surprise was that I was getting a 15+ download before the upgrade (I have no idea how that happened) and now it has dropped down about 2k instead of increasing any at all. My question is what would cause it to drop? And it is not time sensitive, I check it all hours of the day and night and this is the best I can do.

I had the same problem with the Actiontec's wireless -- and with DHCP for wireless devices, so I disabled the built-in wireless and bought an Airport Extreme. Put it in bridge mode, and connected it to the LAN port on the Actiontec. Now my speeds are always at the 20/5 level on my laptops and my desktop that is on a different floor from the Airport gets close to 12/5, whereas before I was lucky to get 1/1.

I never used my Actiontec for Wireless. I have it connected directly to the ONT and then just have a port set up for a DMZ and have my DLink router connected to that. Luckily the Actiontec has not had any problems in the 13+ months I've been using it. But at least if it does die, I can replace it with my DLink temporarily since I'm using a cat5e connection for data instead of coaxial cable.

The ActionTek is junk. You should set things up as follows:

1) Get an ethernet drop from the ONT (don't rely on the ActioTek to go from coax to ethernet)

2) Plug the ethernet (PPPoE) into a router of your choosing

3) Turn basically everything off on the ActionTek (wireless, DHCP, routing, etc.). The ActionTek becomes just a node on your network (so plug it in anywhere behind your router).

4) Plug a split of your in-house coax into the ActionTek (for guide data for Verizon boxes).

That's it. It eliminates the ActionTek from anything except guide data, and lets you run your network the way that you want.

I may be avoiding the issues of translation from Coax to ethernet in the ActionTec, since I have an old setup. I have an ethernet drop from the ONT to the ActionTec, so the (old) ActionTec actually only has to route an unconverted ethernet route, instead of conversion and then routing. Your technique is probably good for those that don't have an ethernet drop from the ONT.

Once I set up things this way, it works well (see the speeds I'm getting), DHCP and DNS handling are fine so far, may experiment with my Belkin first in the future. Has anyone got the ActionTec in as a slave in their setup, and how does VOD (HD and otherwise) work? Mine seems to work well.

You can also set up a DMZ on a port on the Actiontec to bypass it.. This is what I do and it works perfectly. Plus if there are ever any problems I don't have to mess with connecting the Actiontec back up. SInce FIOS will not do much trouble shooting if you have your own router connected to the ONT.
My speed(50/20 tier) and latency going through a DMZ on the Actiontec are the same as when I have my Dlink connected directly to the ONT.
I have over 36 devices connected to my Dlink which is connected to a DMZ on the Actiontec and have zero problems. And my Actiontec is 13+ months old now.

I remember going to a web site to "sign" the contract. I even got a robot phone call from them congratulating me for signing up. I didn't save the message b/c I didn't know 3 months later they were going to deny it ever happened. So they offered to rebundle my service, but it's still going to be like $150 for just basic triple bundle and 1 DVR and 1 foreign language channel. Unbeliveable. I just came back from a week of hospitalization and can barely talk, I just couldn't bother and said I'd call back.

Sounds wrong. AFAIK several people on here have gotten the package at $ 99-104. Most single foreign language channels run from $10-20, so that shouldn't cost an extra $40.

I'd call again when you can and have patience, tell them that you re-upped earlier (do you have any emails about it?), and if they don't have record, that you want the best bundle and oh by the way, also this foreign channel.

I got a great bundle for my services and also have an extra premium channel (Setanta), it didn't affect my bundle. The patience is worth it.

Then you don't do static DCHP. Network engineer or not, you must have a very simple home network.

And the forced remote router upgrades are rediculous. I can't have some external force upgrading my router firmware when they please. (The only way to stop this is to hack the router config, which is just silly.)

For the rest of us, the ActionTek is junk. It has some nice theoretical features, but major bugs like static DHCP not working make it a no-go.

I put the Linksys in a box and it's been there ever since. The only reason I don't sell it is in case I switch from Verizon to some other provider in the future.

I wonder, does everyone else get Setanta Sports for free? I thought this was an a la carte channel?
Setanta Sports is currently in a free preview period. That is why we can all watch it at the moment on channel 1009 (or with a clear QAM tuner on QAM channel 15). Once the free preview is over, you will have to sign up for the channel.

In NY and NNJ the Sports Package is not part of Extreme because Extreme is $10 less in those areas.

Maxman, I'm in the philly suburbs and I'm getting those channels with the Extreme Package. I used to have Premier & the sports package and recently switched to Extreme and the csr told me the sports pkg channels came with Extreme and he was right in my case.

I keep getting switched to different people. Ones says my order included Extreme and the next says it doesn't. I'm in Springfield Township South Jersey.

kes601, there is also a Springfield Township in North Jersey and I think that may have something to do with it.

THIS IS FRUSTRATING!!!

So does that mean you are on the Philly VHO (I am geographically challenged)? If so, I don't think those channels are actually live yet -- they won't be live until 11/17.

The channels maxman mentioned were all on the first rollout for Philly. (MAV-TV HD, (598), Outdoor Channel HD (591), World Fishing Network HD (597) ) I'm just outside phiily and had these from day 1 of the phase 1 rollout.

I have Extreme HD in South New Jersey and it DOES include those sports channels plus the HD channels (VS 590, Outdoor 591, Tennis 592, WFN 597, and MAV 598). Also, it will include those missing 15 or so HD channels that we will get in the next month or so. So call Verizon and beat them over the head until they give you the right channels for Extreme HD :)

I was out a persons home this evening which had the FiOS package (not extreme) and when punching through the channels, when Fox Business Channel came up, it said not subscribed. I am getting it on my TVs and still waiting for them to sort out the package mess - so is Fox Business technically part of Extreme?

I don't do any of this and have NO problems with the ActionTek. As a network professional by trade, I have to say it's the best home router I've ever used. I had a Linksys when I first signed up for FiOS and decided to give the ActionTek a try at replacing all the Linksys' duties, and have been very pleased with it.

To each his own I guess.

All I know is that I have Outlook check for mail in 8 accounts every 2 minutes flawlessly for 10+ years via cable modem on 3 different cable system at my home location. Within 1 hour of changing to FiOS with the ActionTek Router Outlook would stop during mail account access and ask to re-enter name/pasword as the response timed out (which is what was happening with people using torrents). Rebooting helps for about an hour. Then its back to hit and time out. It's clearly the actiontek router as this problem has never happened b4, so I agree the actiontek router is pretty much junk. If I were doing torrents or newsgroups, I'd REALLY be pissed.

No problem here. I just did 250GB up/down on 1 PC the other day(that's the entire Comcast monthly cap from only one of my devices in a 24 hour period). I use windows mail with around fifty email accounts. It only takes around 25 seconds to check those 50 email accounts from 3 domains and the FIOS account.
But with my Actiontec I have a DMZ set up on one port and my DLink is attached to that. Then I have 36+ devices going through my DLink router.

I've never had a problem with mine updating the firmware, in fact if I didn't have a monitor on my Internet connection, I'd probably never notice it going offline in the middle of the night for a few minutes for the update.

Not sure what you mean about Static DHCP, since the D means dynamic. I assume you mean a DHCP reservation. Either way, I don't find them useful because the ActionTec support dynamic DNS, which is one of my favorite features. I just use host names and when my devices get new IP addresses, the router automatically serves up the new IP -- this also works on for my port forwarding rules.

I do have a few devices that pertain to my home automation system that will only use IP, so for these, I assign static IPs to the devices and manually add the host records to the ActionTec's DNS server. But either way DHCP reservations are not needed, so perhaps that's why I never noticed that feature doesn't work.

It would be great to start a movie in the media room and then retire to the bedroom to finish watching the show!

I have been on the phone with Verizon Tech Support for hours and days already. Had a new router shipped with the same results. Had a Verizon Tech in house today, and still could not figure it out. Not a known FIOS issue, many people are happy with their ActionTec routers.

If you want to use the Airport (nice router btw) then you can take several possible paths:

(My option) Shut off the wireless on the ActionTec, set up the Airport as a wireless access point, with DHCP and DNS shut off, connect it through any port. I've done this with a Belkin N router.

Several people have posted other options, in this thread (previous page).

When I switched over, I was prepared to experience some of the problems that folks have written about the ActionTek router. It's been about a month now and I have found no issues with the ActionTek. It has the same coverage radius as my Airport (we are a full Mac household) and does all the things that my Airport used to do.

I have the router located in a cabinet, with closed doors - on the first floor of the house. I get a great signal on all floors of the house and coverage outside, too.

I would let the VZ techs come & figure out what is wrong. You could always configure your Airport behind the ActionTek and let it handle the wireless parts. But, if you don't have to do that, why bother. See what VZ can find/fix and then if you have to - put he Airport behind the ActionTek. There are a number of discussion about this on DSL forums.

But, from my experience - there are more people satisfied with the ActionTek, than not.

Hmm...this just what I've noticed.

Access to games.

Expanded Widgets.

the notorious 4:3 Override can now be enabled/disabled & otherwise managed from the user menu.

improved guide info(i.e. cast info, detailed synopsis, sometimes even year of production)

if you have the Home Media option can stream HD programs to the appropriate STB(s) in your network.

"Wait For Me" DVR feature(this could be VERY useful for ch surfers IMHO). if not already taping a program you can pause a ch, switch to another, then switch back. 1st ch remains paused, you can continue where you left it. don't know how long it will stay paused.

I would have to say the most obvious improvement when we got IMG v1.6 (before Verizon stopped the deployment to fix bugs) was much faster response to stepping through the VOD menus. Before you could sometimes read a book or take bathroom breaks after pressing the arrow to step to the next level in the menu. We still have the earlier build here.

Because of posts at dslreports, I checked and there are bunch of new coming soon channels today I can tune to at 1475 and up. Don't know if these channels are present in all markets. These will reportedly be the Center Ice channels which will be activated very soon. I tuned to 2 of the channels, went into the diagnostics menu and found they were at QAM channel 27 which was added 2 weeks ago (and has a bunch of sub-channels so I guess Center Ice is SD only?).

Other news that I can confirm is that NFL HD Network has copied the CNBC HD+ approach and added HD graphics to the SD studio pictures. They will go full HD next year (you would think the NFL out of all the sport leagues would have the money to be full HD by now).

URFloorMatt

I was under the impression that Video On Demand streams go through the router in addition to guide data.

Sweet, it works!!. Now I am able to see the DVR from the HD STB. I noticed that the stop, play, ff and rwd controls are quite slugish but I guess that is understandable.

The colors are wierd on the tv that has the hd STB though. CNN HD looks weird, like oversaturated and a little fuzzy, like a PC LCD monitor when it is used at a different than native resolution. Any idea what this could be? I am using HDMI and the resolution is set right.

Good for you.

The problem may be that the wireless signal is at the same wavelength as a lot of devices in the home, like cordless phones, etc. Other common devices, like microwaves also can affect the signal. Then it becomes a power game, where the gain of the wireless signal has to overcome the interference of whatever ambient devices are active. Obviously, walls and their composition can also play a part.

The Airport (like the Belkin that I use) has a pretty strong power footprint that may have overwhelmed normal interference from your house devices, something that the ActionTec may not have been able to do.

Glad to see that you're up and running.

Does anyone have TV + Internet without the phone service like I do? And if so what kinds of deals did you get when you called Verizon? I am currently on the Premiere package still and was just wondering what was available before I call.

I do not have the phone service and I got offered the EXACT same thing that Ridge did, extreme HD with the faster internet, DVR free for 3 months and 1 month HBO/Cinemax for free. I signed up in September 07 under Premiere.

The message I got is that you cannot order it through your remote you have to call.

Scouting the DSL thread, one person got it ordered and it will start October 29, and the next person said they were told they don't offer it. Seriously, Verizon's customer service is sorely lacking at times on this stuff.

Called again today and they are now taking orders and games should be on tonight! Bye bye D*.

I just called and got the same $79.99 deal and got my internet speed upgraded from 5/2 to 20/5 for the same price. Overall I think I am paying about the same as before but with all the HD channels and the higher speed internet it was definitely worth making the call.

Where do you get this information? I never would have look for Setanta with out this sight.

I get the "Weekly Spotlight" from Verizon and can't find any announcement. I looked on the Weather Scan crwaler and don't see anything.

What am I missing to tell me what I am missing?

I saw a promo for it on the Fox Soccer Ch the wknd it started(10/11).

the promo is also running on Setanta itself.

I don't think this is a Verizon promo per se but was done by Setanta itself & is probably on all providers that carry them. obviously they want to get people hooked on their programming & sign up.

in my case it might work-luvin' all the rugby matches & no where else to see them.

Install 2 days ago, still no HD sports channels in my Extreme HD package. Spent another hour and a half on the phone last night to be told I'd have them by 5pm today. I was also told that on Tuesday. Verizon's customer service is just as bad as Comcast's and they shuffle you around back and forth and lie lie lie. Off to a great start.

Verizon is a great company to get service from . . . just so long as nothing ever goes wrong and you never have to talk to anybody.

When things work, it is great, but customer service is a nightmare.

Yeah, it really is.. makes me wish Time Warner had great customer service so that they could run ads making fun of Verizon again and thus result in Verizon fixing the terrible customer service. It seems like that's the only real way to improve the situation these days.

Edit: By the way, are are any of the 14 NHL CI channels HD? Or how is that going to work?

I spotted in this thread (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21119105-NHL-Center-Ice~start=180) that somebody believes it is coming in both SD and HD. Put what faith in it you will. I'm keeping my fingers crossed though. Then I just have to hope that the MLB Network gets picked up.

I got a message on my box yesterday that said NHL Center Ice is ready to order and coming soon a number of games will be available in HD.

Open Question.....
I'm trying to get my remote to turn on/off the tv and stb at the sametime without having to go through multiple steps.
I also tried connecting the AC power cord from the tv into the "switched" AC outlet in back of the box. That still did not work. The remote only powered the STB and not the TV.
If this is supposed to be a "Switched" outlet, why didn't it work?
Did Verizon disable this feature on their boxes?

You'll find the instructions in this document:

Power turns on or off both your STB and TV when you are in STB mode. (If
you have a DVR STB, the DVR will continue to record scheduled programs
when off.) However, you can reprogram how the Power Key works.
If you want the Power Key to control multiple devices at once…
1. Press and hold the STB key.
2. While holding down the STB key, press OK.
3. Release both keys. The Device Keys will blink twice.
4. Press 9 - 7 - 7. The STB key will blink twice.
5. One after the other, press each Device Key you want the Power Key
to control, in the order you want them to turn on or off. Each selected
Device Key will blink twice after it is pressed.
6. Press OK when done. The STB key will blink three times to indicate
success in programming.
For example, to program the Power Key to turn on or off your TV, AUX and
STB, in that order with one press of the Power Key, press [STB+OK], [9-7-7],
[TV], [AUX], [STB], [OK].

Might as well post to air my frustration. On my answering machine Friday is a message from Verizon saying that my install scheduled for Monday 10/27 will be delayed to 10/31 (not an available day for me). The contact number is cut off at the end of the message. I call another number Saturday, the call is 45 minutes, nothing is discovered, they promise to call back by noon Sunday.

Sunday comes, I don't get a call so I call again around 4pm. The guy says the department that would have done the call back doesn't have business hours on Sunday so they would call on Monday. But he tells me I could reschedule my install for 11/6(!) or just wait for the call on Monday. I decide to wait.

Meanwhile, my order status online still says they're coming on Monday. The line from the pole to the house was buried this past Thursday so at least that's done. Still, getting off on the wrong foot with Verizon.

I believe the outlet defaults to switched and you can change it in the set up menu. But regardless, if the box is on the outlet should be hot.

Someone else told you how to program the remote to power all units on or off. The switched outlet in back has a software control, you can have it on all the time or switch. Go to Menu, Settings, Set-top Box, Secondary Power Outlet.

That's how my install went in Sept. 2007. They left me a voicemail less than 24 hours prior to my install (fiber was brought to my house the week before) that they wouldn't be installing Fios the following day and that they "wanted to make sure I was okay with an install the following week". I called VZ and they gave no reason other than that there was a problem. They knocked $10off each bill for the first 6 months of my service to try to make up for it.

That's what Verizon does....cable company in disguise.

I feel your pain. I signed up for FiOS back in June. While I didn't have the installation issues (we moved to a new apartment, and it was already wired up). There was an issue where the phone was wired to copper and not the fiber, but other then that installation was smooth. My problem has been on the billing side. I don't believe I'm exaggerating at all when I say I've been on the phone with Verizon for 20 hours between mid June and now. They can't get the phone bill and the internet/TV bill together to get the bundled discount. It's been a complete pain in the ass. If the products weren't so good, I'd have left them after the first 2 months.

I have Extreme HD in South New Jersey and it DOES include those sports channels plus the HD channels (VS 590, Outdoor 591, Tennis 592, WFN 597, and MAV 598). Also, it will include those missing 15 or so HD channels that we will get in the next month or so. So call Verizon and beat them over the head until they give you the right channels for Extreme HD :)

billnj, I've been on the phone numerous times with them and can't get these channels added. Tuning to those channels shows "not subscribed". I finally called the number on the screen (order department) and was told the sports package is NOT included in the Extreme HD package in South Jersey and that it was an additional $8/month. I told him to activate them and now for the first time I am actually receiving them. Now I wonder how to clarify with the billing department that I am not supposed to be charged extra in South Jersey for these channels.

Another question: are you receiving the FX-HD (channel 553) and ESPNews-HD (channel 572) that was added to the lineup last week? These 2 channels aren't even showing up in my guide.

What town are you in? When you put your zip code in on Verizon.com for their channel listings, what packages does it list? Sports seperate? I know in North Jersey, it is extra for the sports package (but I have no idea why).

When you click on the pdf for south jersey, you will see on the first page it lists the sports channels (300-319) as part as Extreme HD. Also, all non-premium HD channels are also part of Extreme HD. The link for south jersey is below:

FX HD and ESPN News HD won't be live until 11/17 here. They are part of the remaining 15 HD's that most other areas now have. So, even though VZ is showing them on their website (Max - i'm thinking that's where you are seeing them), we do not have them for another 3 weeks.

I have the QIP-7216-1. IMG 1.6 (build 06.89) has been an issue for some owners of this unit. Most reports I've read involve intermittent audio dropouts when using digital coaxial or optical audio connections.

My case is worse. Using either coaxial or optical, I completely lose audio every time I change the channel, try to use time-slip functions, use the DVR (and any of its functions), or switch from any audio source to the 7216. The only way to get audio back is to switch audio from Mono to Surround every time I want to do something. (Imagine going through this 20-second process dozens of times a day: it's VERY annoying.) Speaking with customer service, they said if audio works fine when connecting RCA audio cables (which it does), then they cannot report it as an issue because "Verizon does not officially support digital audio" with these units. Needless to say I'm going to find another service rep.

I've read posts at DSLReports saying that there is a 1.6b IMG in the works that addresses digital audio problems on the 7216, but I don't know if that is in any way accurate.

I keep meaning to find or start a thread in the Cable section, since this seems to be a hardware issue, not a content issue. So I should have more info in that forum later.

The Puck Drops Here: Verizon FiOS TV Customers Get Front Row Seats to Hard-Hitting Hockey Action With 'NHL Center Ice' and 'NHL Network'

Last update: 10:34 a.m. EDT Oct. 28, 2008

NEW YORK, Oct 28, 2008 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Agreement Brings FiOS TV Customers HD Programming for This Year's Fast-Paced NHL Season

For die-hard hockey fans there is no such thing as watching too much hockey. Verizon is helping these fans get even more hockey programming, by adding NHL Center Ice to the FiOS TV lineup. Also, Verizon will launch the NHL Network in the coming days.

NHL Center Ice is a subscription sports package that includes up to 40 out-of-market NHL games per week and select games from the first two rounds of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. As an added bonus, Verizon will broadcast select NHL Center Ice games in high definition (HD). The price is $169 for the entire season.
NHL Network is the first 24-hour network dedicated to the National Hockey League, with unprecedented access to the most comprehensive hockey coverage both on and off the ice. NHL Network will broadcast 75 live regular-season games in 2008-09 -- all in HD. The programming brings hockey fans inside the game by offering original programming, documentaries, unparalleled analysis and highlights, live events, and the best in vintage games and features. The network's signature daily live highlight show, "NHL On The Fly," airs nightly throughout the hockey season.

Hockey fans will be amazed by the lifelike viewing experience they'll have when watching NHL action on FiOS.

"There's no better way to experience sports than on FiOS TV, and there's no better way to catch NHL action than with NHL Center Ice and NHL Network," said Terry Denson, vice president -- FiOS TV content and programming. "The unrivaled, stunning picture-and-sound quality that FiOS TV delivers will make fans feel like they're in a rink-side seat. And by providing hundreds of out-of-market games during the season, NHL Center Ice gives our customers a chance to enjoy matchups they would rarely see locally."

Jody Shapiro, NHL senior vice president of distribution, said, "NHL Center Ice and NHL Network are two great examples of how we super-serve our fans with the NHL content they demand. NHL Center Ice provides opportunities to see games from around the league regardless of location, while NHL Network provides complementary programming that enhances our live game broadcasts with analysis and unprecedented behind-the-scenes access. We are very pleased that Verizon FiOS customers will now have the opportunity to enjoy a full range of NHL TV viewing."

Only Verizon delivers all-digital TV service over America's most advanced network that's all-fiber all the way to customers' homes. For customers, that means receiving 100 percent digital quality on every channel, superior picture-and-sound quality, more and more high-definition programming, and more innovative interactive features.

Verizon's FiOS TV service offers a broad collection of all-digital programming, with more than 400 total channels and 11,000 video-on-demand (VOD) titles per month, 70 percent of which are free. FiOS TV is currently available to more than 8.2 million homes in 14 states.

For more information on FiOS TV and additional details on the NHL Center Ice and NHL Network packages, consumers can visit www.verizon.com/fiostv or call their local Verizon sales office or 888-438-3467.

For die-hard hockey fans there is no such thing as watching too much hockey. Verizon is helping these fans get even more hockey programming, by adding NHL Center Ice to the FiOS TV lineup. Also, Verizon will launch the NHL Network in the coming days.

I don't think the NHL Network channel has been added yet to any market. It should go in the sport block with the HD channels in the 570-599 range. But I thought the Center Ice channels were all SD with only 1 channel with some games in HD. I don't subscribe to CI, but I looked last weekend (by tuning to the channel and getting the not subscribed message) and all 14 CI channels were on QAM 27. There are 14 encrypted sub-channels on QAM 27 that I see with the QAM tuner. The normal high quality limit for SD on Verizon is 7 SD sub-channels per QAM channel. But I figure that the way it works is that there would rarely be more than 7 NHL games on at once, between games on the east & west coast and not playing every day. Presumably they dynamically allocate the bandwidth between the active and inactive channels to conserve the bandwidth.

Maybe someone could fill me in on why are there 14 CI channels? Surely they could provide the games with 8 or 9 channels? Unless it is to keep the scheduling simpler?

It may have something to do with the fact that they now carry a lot of home/away feeds. Then again, it might not. This is my first season as a Center Ice subscriber.

There are 30 teams in the NHL so that means there are 15 games at one time. 14 games on CI with one on the NHL channel. But I'm not a hockey fan so take this for what it's worth. :D

Edit: or you get your home team on your RSN with the other 14 games on CI.

On a night such as last Saturday where all 30 teams played on the same day, 14 channels were necessary.

The RSN doesn't really play into it, because your home team's game will still show up on the CI list but will be blacked out.

Thanks. I thought they might switch out my box this morning but they didn't. (The appointment was to change my STB. I cancelled the appointment. The guy showed up anyway, and he was a phone guy, not a TV guy. Didn't even have boxes on the truck. Incredible!)

Even more incredible is their statement to you that "Verizon does not officially support digital audio". Unbelievable!

iN DEMAND feeds all providers with a mux designed to fit all the SD channels in 1 QAM channel. Verizon really has no say in the quality of the video.

With all of them crammed onto 1 QAM channel, not likely if more than 7-8 games are on. I assume that InDemand is packaging the entire CI set into 1 QAM channel with up to 9 active SD channels because the cable companies routinely pack 9 or more SD channels into a QAM channel. Verizon is going to get whatever quality InDemand puts out. The hockey games on Versus and NHL HD on Verizon should look pretty good.

I think the games on Versus have looked quite good. I know it's popular to bash them because they are Versus and not ESPN, but I like their broadcast team and the pre/post game shows they do. I can't wait for NHL Network to come online though. Should be a blast.

I know it's popular to "bash them" but there is an actual problem with their HD telecast nowadays... best described as ghosting, I guess... see the Hockey HD thread for more info. Their broadcast team is okay depending on who they get, and the pre/post game shows are pretty decent. I too can't wait for the NHL Network. But overall I do like Versus, and people don't give them nearly enough credit. They *ARE* a real sports network, darnit!

Is it likely that games of a "local team" on NHL Network or NHL Center Ice might be blacked out if the local team is also being shown in SD on a local channel?

I can only speak for the Caps, who are your local team anyway. You will not see home or away feeds for the Caps on Center Ice, period. And NHL Network does get blacked out in favor of the CSN-HD feed, even if the CSN-HD feed is showing SD. At least CSN-HD has started doing 16:9 SD for all their non-HD games! :)

Thanks for talking me into FiOS, btw... I got installed on Sunday, and I'm quite happy with it.

I think you're being too pessimistic. FIOS has been a very good experience for me, especially when compared to other previous services (Comcast, DirecTV). The service people have been diligent and thorough, the phone representatives have usually found a solution to my issues. Everyone has annoying experiences of some sort (just finished one with billing), but realistically, I have had maybe a problem once in a long while.

On the whole, it has been pretty problem free and much less trying than other services. On the positive side, the actual services that I see on a day to day basis - crystal clear SD/HD TV, powerful internet services and an understatedly clean phone service are well worth the small inconveniences I see once in a great while.

All of this at a much lower price than my previous providers.

I'm in the DC area, and just called to upgrade to Extreme HD. Because we're almost a year in w/ our triple freedom contract, adding the new channels and faster internet is a wash. It requires a new 1-year contract (we had just over a year left anyway) and the cost is the same.

When I get home, I'll check and see what new channels are available, do a speed test on the internet, and report back.

I hope you're right because am tired of the ever increasing fees levied by DN...coupled to the many technical problems they seem to be rife with and which are increasing with bothersome regularity.

It would be very good indeed to "bundle" up all three services in one monthly bill, at least for one year...

Thanks; I'll be eager to check them out. BTW, I asked the CSR when the new channels would be available (having already read Kes' post this morning), just to see what knowledge they have. All the new channels are active except the additional Starz channels; the guide still shows them as "coming soon." Now the trick will be to train my wife and daughter to start using the new channels instead of their SD counterparts.

DD is a codec. ProLogic is matrixing your receiver can do, and isn't (directly) about the source signal.

All HD broadcasts have Dolby Digital audio, though the number of channels and bitrate varies. Palladia switches between DD2.0 and DD5.1 depending on the format of the source. Many (but not all) of the concerts have a DD5.1 mix, while most music videos use the same stereo mix as the album and are accordingly DD2.0. Your receiver is likely applying processing to these 2.0 signals to give you sound through all 5 speakers. This isn't a bad thing, as most upmixers do such a poor job on music that listening in straight stereo is usually better.
