Of course to receive ESPN 3D you have to either have the HD "Ultimate" tier or pay an additional $9.99/month?!?!? What a joke! D* offers it for no additional fee.

Not sure if this problem is indicative of the latest Moto 7232 box, but when you start playback of a recorded show, if you should hit stop during playback it'll revert back to that same root channel being recorded, even if you had been on a totally different channel when you hit play. This means it can essentially give you a spoiler, should you start watching it b4 it completes the recording. bob2274 03-21-11, 09:10 PM Of course to receive ESPN 3D you have to either have the HD "Ultimate" tier or pay an additional $9.99/month?!?!? What a joke! D* offers it for no additional fee. If they don't charge for it, then D* spreads the cost of the channel out for all customers to pay for it. While I think this is a good thing for Verizon to carry, I personally don't think everyone should have to pay for a channel that only a few have any use for. Maybe as more people are using 3D, they can include 3D channels with more packages. Remember that sports channels are are never "free", and just about always come at a substantial cost. nyctveng 03-22-11, 06:56 AM If they don't charge for it, then D* spreads the cost of the channel out for all customers to pay for it. Very true, good post. Regardless of how a multichannel provider packages their channels, a customer needs to look at the total cost of the channels they view rather than paying a huge sum and thinking that channels are "free". ESPN charges cable companies something like $6 per month per customer compared to channels like VH1 in the 20cent range. mariob33 03-22-11, 07:10 AM BETHD live in mass mikeewing 03-22-11, 08:35 AM Has anyone ever noticed this? It's no different than any other channel. many people don't have use for other channels, yet they have no choice but to pay for it since it's included in their package. This is how I feel about all the ESPN channels. If I had my way I would strip all the ESPN channels out of my package and save all that money since they are very expensive per subscriber. But that's not the way things are. The same goes for those .TV channels too and several others. It is widely known that they are by far the most expensive non-premium channels. How about a sports package? Why not a kids' package (so those who don't have kids, or whose kids have outgrown those sorts of channels could save money)? A Discovery/History/TLC type package? A music channels package (w/Palladia, Fuse, CMT, and MTV/VH1 and their multiplexes)? I also wonder if TruTV HD was part of that 5. Joe said that the next 5 were sports, and TruTV HD was added because of basketball. At the time, FS Southwest HD was on the list for some reason even though it's regional. Since its launch, we've seen Tru TV HD, and a date for ESPN 3D has been announced. Marcus Carr 03-25-11, 12:49 PM FiOS TV Rides Into Albany, N.Y., Suburbs Telco Launches to 23,000 Households, Competing With Time Warner Cable By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 3/25/2011 1:04:10 PM Verizon is now marketing FiOS TV service to about 23,000 households in the Albany, N.Y., area touting introductory pricing of $100 for a triple-play bundle for the first 12 months and a bigger HD lineup than incumbent Time Warner Cable. On Friday, the telco began offering FiOS TV in parts of four communities in the Albany suburbs: the towns of Bethlehem and Guilderland, and the villages of Colonie and Scotia. Verizon expects to expand that availability to 38,000 more households in the market, with franchise agreements with city of Schenectady and the town of Colonie pending approval by the New York Public Service Commission, director of media relations John Bonomo said. FiOS TV offers more than 535 total channels in New York, including 130 HD channels in Albany's Capital District market. The telco is not currently seeking a franchise with the City of Albany itself; Bonomo said the primary focus for Verizon is completing existing franchise commitments "rather than seeking and building in new areas and securing new franchises." According to Verizon, the company has spent more than $1 billion in wireline network infrastructure across New York State each year since 1995. It now has 183 video franchises in the state, each with buildout commitments of five years, with the earliest franchises awarded in 2006. "Consumers and small businesses in these communities at long last have a better choice for TV," Tracey Edwards, president and general manager for Verizon's upstate New York region, said in a statement. "We've had great success in many other parts of the state. Now it's time to bring FiOS TV to this part of northeastern New York and provide customers in the region a choice that is truly different from the cable TV company." Asked to comment about the FiOS TV launch in the Albany area, Time Warner Cable spokeswoman Lara Pritchard said the operator "has a breadth of product and local service that differentiates us from all of our competitors." Those include YNN 24-hour news; sports programming like Siena College basketball and other NCAA Division I collegiate sporting events; Look Back and Start Over video-on-demand services; and TWC's newly launched iPad app that provides streaming of up to 32 live channels. "We will continue to do what we've always done -- take care of our customers, regardless of who comes to town with new claims of superiority," Pritchard said. http://www.multichannel.com/article/465786-FiOS_TV_Rides_Into_Albany_N_Y_Suburbs.php dcowboy7 03-25-11, 04:35 PM Reminder: EPIXHD channel 895 free weekend thru monday am....some good stuff: star trek (2009) iron man 2 platoon kick-ass g.i. joe: the rise of cobra robocop hot tub time machine bon jovi from meadowlands stadium craig ferguson standup show coyoteaz 03-25-11, 04:45 PM But not that good since the picture will be cluttered by the inevitable "You're watching a FREE PREVIEW of EPIX!" and other such crap on top of their usual snipes about their website. Is it possible to do this on either one? Can I switch between them? The other tuner is always tuned to the last channel that you watched, or whatever is recording in the background. This is literally the only gripe that I have with FiOS coming from Comcast. With Comcast I could swap tuners and use the last button on each tuner to effectively track 4 channels at once if I desired (think heavy sports days). Also, I could keep the other tuner on my channel of choice with the buffer running, enabling me to jump back if I missed something. scott_bernstein 03-30-11, 10:41 AM I've had FiOS TV for about a week now, and I've noticed a couple of times when I tell my DVR to record a program that already started, that it somehow goes back to the beginning and records the whole show. Also, don't forget about the 2nd tuner -- if you happened to have been watching the channel you want to record BEFORE whatever you are currently watching (and you are not currently recording anything), that will be the channel on the background tuner, and since it's in the buffer, the DVR can grab the program from the beginning (if you are lucky) mariob33 03-30-11, 01:18 PM I understand what you are asking 4HiMarks. I've been a very long time Cablevision customer and finally decided to make the switch to Fios. It was strictly a pricing decision for me. I've always been happy with their products, services and support. I'm in NY and I'm getting Extreme HD+15/5+Digital Voice. As far as install, what should I look out for? What should I expect? How much damage to my house is the installer going to need to do? Right now, I'm having work done on my house and half the house is to the studs. Unfortunately, I was too slow to order and most of the work will be completed prior to my Fios install. My contractor did say he can put a backboard and power outlet inside the house next to my electrical panel so that the installer can put the ONT there. There should be access to the back of the house from there, so that might work. What are the other considerations for an inside/outside ONT install? Should I definitely push for that inside install? I'll probably want the router on the floor above the ONT though. Hopefully, it won't be too bad to get to the router from the ONT? I think he can go out the back of the house and then right into the room with the router pretty easily. I understand that they can either do Coax or Ethernet to the router. Is one preferable over the other? Also, I think I might have 2 drops from Cablevision now. If that's actually the case, when the Fios installer connects to the existing Coax, I suppose that's not going to get him to all of my TVs. How will he proceed to connect to all my TVs? I have 4 TVs. Will he make sure all those have service or is there a limit as to how many TVs he has to do? Should I request he replace any existing splitters? Is anything I'm asking out of the ordinary or is the type of communication/input I'm looking for with the installer fairly typical? I know that I will only accept the new 7232 DVR and the 7100p2 STBs. Unfortunately, I understand no eStata yet (which I have on both my Cablevision boxes), but hopefully coming somewhat soon. I also want the Actiontec MI424WR Rev F router, right? Anything else that I should be considering as far as the install? I'm probably going to drive this guy nuts, especially with brand new drywall all over. What about as far as in operation? I know the DVR will be a big difference from how it works now. Anything else that might surprise me (either good or bad) with differences between Cablevision and Fios? Too late, but still looking for answers to the rest of my post. scott_bernstein 03-30-11, 05:39 PM Sounds just like your typical HDMI handshake issue. If it disappears right away, I wouldn't worry about it. It shouldn't have anything to do with your cable if the picture is otherwise fine. Yep, but you can keep this from happening if you go into the setup menu and tell it to upscale your SD programming to 1080i. I can't recall the exact setting option, but can check with I get home later.... Phantom Gremlin 03-30-11, 08:47 PM I understand that they can either do Coax or Ethernet to the router. Is one preferable over the other? ... I also want the Actiontec MI424WR Rev F router, right? FWIW, I had Verizon run Ethernet to my own router. Afterwards I tested my setup and saw solid 25/25 performance. I think you should just go Ethernet if possible, but I don't think that coax will cost you very much latency or performance. Using MOCA involves an extra device, but it's no big deal. And it may give you future flexibility. I chose to use my existing router, which was already running BSD. I also was happy with my existing Airport Extreme wireless, and so didn't need Verizon's device for that. In retrospect, I should have accepted Verizon's Actiontec; I could have simply kept it on the shelf for possible future use. I think you should consider dslreports.com as an additional resource for your questions. There are many hackers there who live for these types of discussions. But it's all been rehashed over and over, so who can tell what advice you'll get (or not get)! UnnDunn 03-30-11, 09:50 PM Hope this is the right place for this. I've been a very long time Cablevision customer and finally decided to make the switch to Fios. It was strictly a pricing decision for me. I've always been happy with their products, services and support. ... Thanks in advance.Wow, lots of questions; it sounds like you pretty much already know what you want. Installing FiOS will involve drilling a 1-inch external hole, and a set of mounting holes for the inside equipment. If you choose an external ONT installation, the hole will be used to pull in the power cable connecting the ONT to the battery backup unit inside the house. If you choose an internal ONT installation, the hole will be used to pull in the fiber line. If you choose an internal ONT, the ONT will be mounted directly over the hole used to pull in the fiber line. They will not run fiber inside your house, under any circumstances. Whether you go external or internal is largely up to you. There are no performance benefits to either approach. An internal ONT is easier to access for troubleshooting purposes, it eliminates a potential point of failure (the power cable) and it shortens the install time (since it's just one unit to mount and connect, not two). But it also restricts your installation options, since it must be mounted on an outer wall, immediately adjacent to a power outlet. If you've already got coax runs, might as well use them. There is no performance benefit to Ethernet over Coax, so you'll just be wasting the installer's time if you request Ethernet. The only real benefit Ethernet will offer is the ability to use your own router, but since you're getting TV as well, that is not an advisable approach. If you've got existing coax, use it. The installer will make sure there is service to all boxes you have requested. So if you have 4 boxes, he'll do what it takes to make sure they all have service on the same coax network. He'll try to use as much existing coax as possible, but will also run new coax when necessary. Assuming both of your CV drops enter the house at roughly the same point, the installer will probably simply cut both cables and join them together, or mount the ONT somewhere close by and use a splitter to connect the two cables together. Honestly, you shouldn't worry too much about the install. Unlike CV, Verizon does not use independent contractors, so your installer will know exactly what to do, and will make sure the job is done right. As for comparing CV to FiOS... as a Cablevision emigre myself, all I can say is boy are you in for a treat! FiOS and CV aren't even in the same league. You might have gotten used to the blocky, pixellated mess CV calls high definition. Well, soon, you'll get used to a picture so crisp and clean, going back to CV will literally make you wince at how ugly it is. If you've got a home theater system, you'll also get used to significantly upgraded audio. Also, there's things like 30 second skip, a proper favorites list, fast and responsive operation and much, much more. markjrenna 03-30-11, 11:36 PM FiOS... No MSG HD if that matters to you. I finally just called Verizon and asked for an IR receiver. They sent one free and it show up in the mail in just a few days. Threw the receiver and an emitter into a project box and shoved it in the back of the rack out of sight. I did the same thing. I am piping the DVR's output to several TV's, and I wanted to be able to control the DVR from the three other rooms. I bought a wired IR repeater system with an eye at each of the other three TVs. The emitter from that system is in the box with the "remote eye" from the DVR. That works great. However, plugging in the remote eye disables the eye on the front of the DVR. Not a big deal if your DVR is in a cabinet with no line-of-sight. However. mine is just under the TV, but I couldn't control it from the same room once I plugged in the remote emitter. Rather than spend the $35 or so for an eye for the wired system for the TV that is in the same room as the DVR, I asked Verizon to send me a second eye (which they did at no cost). I used s standard headphone splitter in the jack on the back of the DVR, and put the second eye above the TV. Works great! My wired system is made from Buffalo and Xantech components, bought from Smarthome.com. Xantech does have a wired direct-link that can connect their blocks right to the DVR, but it was $25, and I didn't think I needed to do that if I already had the emitter and a remote eye in the same box together for about $5. noamparn 03-31-11, 11:04 AM ...I want the 7232 hard wired so please post back here if you are successful. Xantech makes a direct-wire connection between their IR connecting blocks and the Motorola DVRs. Here is a link to it: http://www.smarthome.com/81990/Xantech-28EXT-Emitter-External-Adapter/p.aspx It may or may not be compatible with your IR system, but it doesn't hut to try. Keep in mind that plugging into the IR port on the back of the DVR disables the built-in IR receiver on the front of the DVR. jeepmatt 03-31-11, 11:04 AM Final test build of 1.9 was pushed out overnight to the beta group. As I write this, I'm looking at the run of FIOS fiber inside my home between the hole from the outside and the position of the internal ONT. The installer ran a small wire channel along the walls to encase the fiber. The position of the hole, which was determined by external factors, was simply not a suitable location for the ONT. The installer had no problem doing this, and at no time did he even suggest it was not standard procedure. It helped, though, that I moved all the furniture out of the way in advance of the installer's arrival, so that he had a clear path to work in. From what I was told, they don't have them in the stores, and the installer who swapped out my 6416 for the 7232 didn't have one, either. When I called, I asked if they could send me two. The rep said they were only allowed to send one per order. (although I'm guessing if you have two DVRs, you should be able to get two of them). The rep suggested I try calling back later to place a second order. I figured I'd wait to make sure I at least got the first one. Once it arrived (only a day or two after I called to request it), and I confirmed it worked, I called back, and asked them to send me another one (not telling the rep that I already had one). That worked, and I now have two of them. Radio Shack has an IR receiver component, part # 276-640. Before I knew I could get one free from Verizon, I had tried wiring one of these up (I found the pinout of the jack online somewhere), and it seemed to work. However, putting two of them in parallel didn't seem to work as well for me. I also had problems mixing the Verizon eye with the Radio Shack one. I ended up returning the parts, and just using the Verizon eyes. coyoteaz 04-04-11, 04:29 PM Coyote- What the hell are you talking about?? Comcast fully distributes these channels to VZ. Verizon's had CSN in SD and HD since the service launched back in 2007. VZ just picked up TCN in SD at the start of last season. The HD feed is already at the VHO (has been there the whole time) - VZ's content group won't let the engineers add it to the lineup. Most likely a bandwidth issue - but who knows. Stupid move on their part. My mistake. Comcast is still withholding from satellite so they're still douchebags :). Does VHO8 have a third RSN or something? There is capacity assigned for at least 2 RSNs: LA has FS West and Prime Ticket, Tampa has Sun Sports and FS Florida, Dallas has FS Southwest and FS Southwest+ (finally), NY has YES and SNY, Boston has NESN and CSN NE. NY I could see being a problem with bandwidth if MSG ever starts playing fair, because they would need to find room for MSG, MSG+, MSG2, and MSG+2 on top of SNY and YES. jeepmatt 04-05-11, 07:59 AM HHAHAHA. VHO8 is kinda f'd with sports channel capacity - we have the Philly CSN in HD, along with MASN HD (here in Delaware). Now, up in Mercer County, NJ - they have to supply NY locals and sports channels - this all comes out of VHO8. UnnDunn 04-05-11, 09:02 AM This is not true. Hmm, when I suggested that to my installer, he flatly refused citing company policy. Anyway, good to know. raylock 04-05-11, 09:20 AM This is not true. The answer to your main question is of course best answered by calling Verizon, although I agree CSRs are usually clueless. I don't know how your CV internet is but if it's anything like mine was you should run, not walk, to Verizon to sign up. :) Chances are the phone you would get with Verizon would be digital voice (i.e. IP), is that what you have now? Do you care if your phone service is Internet-based or not? As to TV, CV probably has more "HD" channels, although the quality varies widely. Which channels do you consider "must-haves" and which are dispensable? Don't rely on "promises" of channels to come on FIOS, just what they have now, although an official announcement has been made that FSC-HD is coming soon, if you care. FIOS1 looks like a low-budget version of News12, which looks like a low-budget version of your local news, but it serves. I wouldn't make my decision based on that. Look at the channels and at the type of phone service you want and consider if you want and/or need reliable Internet service. I know many people (including myself) have saved a lot by bundling with FIOS. I suspect you will as well. As a geek, I have to say FiOS service is incredible and much better than Cablevision in the area. I live in Mineola LI, and I actually went to my town meetings to fight to get FiOS the TV franchise. This was on my own and with no prompting from my company. When it first became available around 4 years ago, I got it and its a huge upgrade in internet speed, HDTV channels, picture quality, content available, and technology. The internet speed is 2 to 3x faster than Cablevision with the standard 15Mbs speed, it is dedicated and not shared with everyone in your area, so I have never had any slowdowns. They also have a 25Mbs and 50Mbs plan, but I can't imagine anyone needing those speeds. I use it with Xbox and Netflix watch instantly in HD and its flawless, even when my kids are also on the PC surfing. They have over 600 channels and at least 200 HD channels. The HD channels even have multiple movie premium channels like HBOWest, HBO 2, etc.. so if you have the premium package you have over 50 HD movie channels. The new DVR 7232 has a 500GB drive and it will soon also allow you to add an external drive up to a 1TB (Once the new IMG 1.9 interface is released this summer). The DVR interface is great and can be controlled from a mobile device or the internet. It also displays who is calling on the screen and has widgets like facebook, youtube, and more. They also have a media manager you can run on your PC that lets you use the DVR box as a media player and play MP3s, Photos and Videos from your PC Hard Drive. The HD picture is better then on Cablevision and they do not compress the video to crap like other services do. However some of the broadcasters already compress the picture, so some HD channels do have some artifacts and compression boxes. They also give you the Premium VOD for all the premium channels you subscribe to like HBO, Starz, and Showtime on demand at no additional charge. There are always great shows and movies in HD available whenever you want if you subscribe to those channels. They also are debuting ESPN 3D this month, and they already have a ton of 3D titles available on demand. FiOS 1 is a good equivalent to News 12, and I don't miss News 12 at all. The cost for me with the Starz package, 2 DVRs, and 2 Digital adapters, phone, and Internet with NO special deal was around $160 a month, and for me it was worth every penny. I just got the Employee FiOS discount which brings it down to around $100, on par with the deals they offer other customers. If you can get a deal, go for it, the technology is superior, cutting edge, and light years ahead of Cablevision for around the same price. I would never go back to Cablevision, it would be a huge step down in all areas. scott_bernstein 04-06-11, 11:19 AM The internet speed is 2 to 3x faster than Cablevision with the standard 15Mbs speed, it is dedicated and not shared with everyone in your area, so I have never had any slowdowns. Often overlooked is the internet service quality....I did get the 35/35 service from FIOS and I'm constantly blown away by the speeds (as is my wife). We both do a lot of uploading (she with her HD-Flipcam videos and me with photos and [legal] music) and I have seen upload speeds up to 4Mbps (though they usually hover between 1-2Mbps) and similar download speeds. On Time Warner's standard plan the best I could ever get was 60kbps uploads (or 90k on their step-up plan). That is a speed improvement of nearly 300 times. Amazing. Things that used to take hours to upload now take minutes. Things that used to take days now take hours. nyctveng 04-06-11, 11:45 AM Full Disclosure: I do work for Verizon as an internal Computer Systems Tech, unrelated to the FiOS division. URFloorMatt 04-06-11, 12:58 PM Not being greedy, just business savy. If you have something that your competition doesn't, you hold onto it, or you find yourself going out of business.Nonsense. If Cablevision would go out of business were MSG HD and its sister channels available on FiOS, then obviously there is no business savvy at work here--only monopolistic distortions of the market place. The Dolans are, and always have been, greedy. There is a fortune to be had at little cost as a content provider. But being a cable provider? You spend a fortune to earn only a small pittance every month, all that's left after the content providers have shaved off most of the value. This is the definition of "penny smart, pound foolish" behavior, i.e. We keep MSG exclusive to Cablevision, saving thousands of digital-tier subs in that division, but at the cost of losing millions in monthly subscriber fees that we could and should charge to our competitors. This is money which Cablevision could reinvest in their cable product to upgrade infrastructure, removing the need to cram 4 HDs per QAM in some instances, and ending their long-held business of desperately clinging to the MSG HD products to prevent unsatisfied sports fans from jumping ship to better options. There's a reason the shareholders have long been engaged in efforts to spin off MSG and Rainbow from Cablevision: to loosen the Dolans' idiotic control over those content providers so they can make smart business moves. Thankfully for the rest of us, those efforts are now nearly complete. EDIT: And in a bit of irony, as someone else has already noted, you cited the OnStar example. Why would GM get out of the exclusivity business and into the OnStar for All business? Because exclusivity almost never makes sense from a business perspective. And why would it? Exclusivity is just market-speak for restraint of trade, and restraining trade of your own goods always hurts your bottom line. The difference between OnStar and MSG is an obvious one: it probably wasn't technically feasible, until recently, to package the entire OnStar architecture in a user installed rear-view mirror attachment. There's no technical limitation preventing the Dolans from offering MSG to every provider who's willing to pay. LL3HD 04-06-11, 01:13 PM ...as someone else has already noted, ...;) Great points, very well put  CureMode 04-06-11, 01:17 PM There are not 200 hd channels on FiOS or any other system. URFloorMatt 04-08-11, 09:37 AM Cool. Now we get to put the value of the beta system to the test. In theory, the 1.9 rollout should be quick and painless, though I suspect it will be staggered a bit to manage increased call volume. lexluthor 04-08-11, 10:26 AM I posted a bunch of pre-install questions last week and now I'm here post install. Everything went smoothly. The installer didn't need to run any internal wiring, so he didn't damage any of my brand new walls or anything like that. I'm just trying to understand how the Multi Room DVR operates exactly. Basically.... I can stream one recorded HD show to a remote STB at a time. I can't watch another recorded HD show on a different remote STB at the same time, but I can watch another recorded HD show off the DVR itself at the same time. Got it? I don't want to buy a 1Tb drive and then find out a few months later that I can use a 2Tb one. Just use the 2TB one from the start. It will only partition out 1TB for now, but you can reuse the drive later. 1.5TBs is plenty for me though. I haven't gone past 60% on the internal 500gb drive at this point. ianeicher 04-08-11, 04:40 PM Is anyone on here using an ATI cable card tuner in the LA area (Glendora/San Dimas)? I'm getting Fios installed next weekend and am thinking about picking up a tuner, but am worried it won't work because of simulcrypt encryption. It does seem to me that they would have to permit 2TB from the start if they're going to support them. It's not like they're going to want to do another firmware rollout to expand the drive space availability, right? coyoteaz 04-08-11, 06:33 PM Did Simulcrypt ever actually happen? URFloorMatt 04-10-11, 07:50 PM In case you were wondering, FiOS Twitter confirmed today that DC/MD/VA will be the last region to get IMG 1.9. As if there was any doubt. By way of this conversation, he also confirmed that VHO4 is the largest VHO, and that's why we're always last. For what it's worth (not much), he also confirmed that GolTV and BBC America are in the queue for new HD channels. Previously he had mentioned E! as well. With FSC HD rolling out this week, one of those should be next. But no idea which or when. As has been pointed out on DSL Reports, compression by Rainbow Media has forced their four HD channels onto one QAM. So we've got space for two more HD channels than we previously did. cinema13 04-10-11, 08:01 PM confirmed that GolTV and BBC America are in the queue for new HD channels. Because that's probably the single greatest determinant of how fast this will happen. I would guess, out of caution, the next roll out will definitely not happen until next Thursday. But if call volume is below expectations, then things may possibly speed up after the second roll out. We know Verizon can roll two DACs a week; they have in the past. Twitter Joe has certainly not been optimistic, speaking in terms of "weeks/months" before everyone gets it. I hate to need to clear this out each time I'm in a hurry and it's blocking the picture. markjrenna 04-14-11, 11:32 AM My guess... VHO 2 & 11 would go no sooner than 4/28/11. Dmon4u 04-14-11, 11:47 AM Still playing around. Just what happens if Parental Controls are 'ON' We've never used them before and so we do not have any PIN number to change the Setting. I'm sure they were always 'OFF' before. To learn how you can participate, please visit: http://*******/gGtqYU In keeping with our commitment to provide FiOS TV viewers with information about modifications and enhancements to their service, we are providing release notes for version 1.9 of the Interactive Media Guide (IMG) software for your FiOS TV DVR and set-top boxes. IMG 1.9 is beginning its verizon.comdeployment activities in Buffalo, Syracuse, Albany and Harrisburg. It will be delivered to the rest of the FiOS TV markets over the next couple months. This post is intended to summarize the release notes we use internally in language the rest of us can comprehend (i.e. replacing the inane acronyms and technical jargon with plain English). Release Overview IMG 1.9 is a feature release and is entirely focused on implementing capabilities that our customers have been requesting through Verizon Forums, Twitter, Facebook, letters and emails to Verizon leadership, the Test Track program, etc. There are minor changes to how we handle the delivery of applications to the set-top box as well as some corrections to software issues. But the majority of the enhancements came straight from FiOS TV viewers, and we greatly appreciate the time many of you took to tell us how to make a great service even better. We also want to take a moment before diving into the release notes to give a shout out to our sneak peek customers who volunteered their TV’s and time to work with us since December to finish IMG 1.9 development. These FiOS TV viewers helped us make sure that by the time the software got to you all it provided an amazing and high quality experience. Many heartfelt thanks. Device Support The IMG 1.9 release is not supported by digital adapters (Motorola DCT 700), like all the historical IMG releases. Unlike past guide releases, IMG 1.9 is also not supported by a small number of standard-definition set-top boxes (Motorola QIP 2500 P1 and P2). These devices will remain on their current version of guide software. All other Motorola and Cisco set-top boxes will be upgraded to IMG 1.9 through an automatic software download. No action is required on your part. Enhancements Summary IMG 1.9 is our most significant upgrade to FiOS TV’s guide since we introduced the Interactive Media Guide in 2007. There were few portions of the guide software that weren’t enhanced in this release. New look and feel with higher resolution graphics and smooth animations* Re-design of search and better integration throughout the guide Expansion of guide data to include complete cast information and air date New Channel Guide view providing another option for navigating live TV content Recommendations for live TV content Ability to select the Widgets that are displayed in the carousel More parental control tools and a configuration wizard Overhaul of Message Center Improved 3DTV support Support for Descriptive Video Service, native pass through, 1080p, and MP3 and MPEG-4 decoding on select devices. A long list of DVR and multi-room DVR enhancements Even more ways to customize the guide to your personal preferences In the following sections of the releases notes, we’ll dive deeper into several of these areas. New Look & Feel Perhaps one of the most requested enhancements to the IMG has been an HD canvas for the graphical user interfaces (GUI’s). IMG 1.8 and its predecessor releases have offered users interfaces in a 4:3 aspect ratio that did not fill the 16:9 HD TV screens. Motorola 7100 and 7232 set-top boxes as well as Cisco HD capable devices will fill your HDTV screen end-to-end with higher resolution graphics presenting more information per page view. The 480 resolution graphics from previous releases have been upgraded to 1080 resolution. As well you will notice smooth animations as you navigate the user interfaces and transition from menu to menu. My favorite example of the more sophisticated graphics and introduction of smooth scrolling animations is definitely the new Widgets carousel. Unfortunately, try as we might, we were not able to provide support for HD canvas GUI’s and smooth scrolling animations on Motorola 6200 and 6416 devices due to graphics processing limitations of the hardware. Of course, this HD canvas feature is not available on standard-definition set-top boxes, because the devices and the TV screens they are connected to do not support high definition graphics and 16:9 aspect ratio. Next Generation Search A feature that has been core to the Interactive Media Guide is search. Unlike other systems that execute the search locally on the set-top box severely limiting its capabilities, FiOS TV search employs powerful servers that are distributed throughout our network. These search engines use technology commonly employed on the Internet, but have been optimized for access through a TV screen. One of the benefits of this Internet technology is that it enables the ability to search across live TV, DVR recordings and Video on Demand with one query. With the growth of Widgets we have extended the search index to also include TV applications with the other content types. Search for “weather” and the results will present a link to the TV application from Weatherbug as well as any TV shows / channels or movies that are relevant to that keyword. The biggest change you will notice about search is that it is much more readily available throughout the entire guide. Historically to access search you had to navigate away from whatever view was being displayed to the main menu and then select search. With IMG 1.9, a simple click of the blue ‘B’ button on the remote control and you are instantly accessing the search engine. Once you are in search you will find entering text for keyword searches much less painful with the introduction of predictive type and recent / saved searches. As you enter characters, the search application will present possible options that are refined with each new character entered. Once you see your option simply arrow up to select it and more quickly find the content you are seeking. And to avoid text entry in the future you can save up to 25 searches to access again later with a couple quick clicks. If you don’t save the query, the new application will also keep up to 10 of your recent keywords readily available for quick access during future searches. The new IMG 1.9 search application supports a wealth of filters that improve the power of this content discovery tool. Click options and you can select from one of 16 filters to refine the search results. Select “HD” and your results will only include content that is available in HD. Or select “Flex View” and your results will be filtered to present just the content you can view on your TV, computer and mobile devices, reducing the number of clicks to enjoy the show or movie you desire. Set the filter to “Now,” and the results will only display choices that can be viewed immediately. Search Filters Pay Per View Flex View On Demand On Demand HD All Now Today HD Sports Adult TV Listings DVR Games Widgets Marketplace Help Content Additional Content Discovery Tools Beyond improved search capabilities there have been other additions to the IMG that will help you find content. We have added a “Channel Guide” view of TV listings to the existing Full, Half and Mini guide views. The Channel Guide allows you to more quickly flip through channels to see what’s currently on as well as upcoming shows. Further you can customize which of these are presented when you hit the Guide button on the remote control. Set the Full Guide to launch with the first click and set the Channel Guide to launch on the second click—or whatever combination you want for primary and secondary preferences. The recommendation engine that has historically been employed for only On Demand content will also be available for live TV content in this release. With “more like this” for live TV, you can link from shows and movies you like to other content that is similar. Another request from FiOS TV viewers was the ability to more easily find high-definition channels. CNN is channel 100, but CNN HD is channel 600. So we added a prompt to the info bar for when you tune to standard definition content that is also available in HD. Simply click the ‘C’ button and the set-top box will automatically tune to the HD version of the channel. Further, the program information screens will also present “watch in SD” or “watch in HD” options to make it easier to discover high definition content. Probably the most requested content discovery tool centered on the ability to quickly set Favorites to only those channels you have as part of your subscription. On the Verizon Idea Exchange this feature is the third most popular post. So, with IMG 1.9 you can select a Favorites list that is automatically generated based on the channels in your subscription, just like we have with IMG 1.8 for HD channels. No more hand crafting the Favorites list. Parental Controls We hear consistently that Parental Controls are important to many FiOS TV viewers, but see that very few set-top boxes actually have them enabled. For IMG 1.9 we introduce two usability improvements that we hope will enable more households to take advantage of tools intended to control the content certain members of the family consume. The first is a simple wizard that asks about the ages of the children in your home and then automatically configures the controls—no expertise in the different TV show and movie rating approaches needed. This wizard will also be easy to find. If you do not have Parental Controls set on your set-top box, you will be prompted to configure them when accessing adult or Internet (i.e. Widgets) content. Also you can now set the Parental Controls across all the set-top boxes in your home without having to configure them on each device independently, reducing the amount of effort to block content that may be inappropriate for certain members of the family. And last is the ability to block access by day and time. These settings allow you to set day and time restrictions that block members of your household from viewing channels or using any FiOS TV features. When the day / time restrictions are enabled, viewers cannot access, browse or navigate through the IMG. Also they will not be able to view any content. A black screen with a lock icon is displayed on the screen, which can be unlocked by entering the correct 4-digit PIN. This feature allows users to create restricted time periods with a start and end time of any given day of the week to block all programming. You can create up to 10 restricted time periods per set top box. Message Center Message Center is poised to take on an expanded role with IMG 1.9. When it launches, IMG 1.9 will include more sophisticated messages from Verizon to you about your FiOS TV service, but shortly after we have upgraded everyone to IMG 1.9, Message Center will integrate with your communication services from Verizon. When a new message from Verizon arrives, you will be alerted more clearly than in previous guide releases. These messages can also be targeted to specific set-top boxes, so you’ll only receive information that is relevant to you. And last you will be able to take action from the message with a simple click of the remote control, like tuning to a new HD channel, accessing On Demand content or launching a new TV application. Following the IMG 1.9 we will upgrade Message Center to include access to call history, voicemail and the ability manage your voice services from the TV (e.g., call forwarding, incoming call block and my favorite—do not disturb). 3DTV Cisco set-top boxes that are HD capable and Motorola 7000 series devices will automatically configure your 3DTV to the proper 3D mode, based on the content being viewed. So you won’t have to navigate the TV screen’s menu to select top bottom or side to side 3D mode before enjoying the content. If you have a Motorola 6000 series, then unfortunately you will have to continue using the TV screen’s menu system to set the 3D mode. Self Service IMG 1.9 provides even more ways to simply click a button to purchase more content or resolve a problem, saving you from having to pick up the phone. Of particular note is a new troubleshooting tool that I think demonstrates the power of the FiOS TV platform: the remote control low battery indicator. If the set-top box detects this state, you will get a visual indicator to replace the batteries. This feature is only supported on the most recent FiOS TV remotes that were introduced at the end of last year. DVR and Multi-room DVR Last, but certainly not least based on feedback from many of you, are the enhancements to the DVR and multi-room DVR. First is the top request from FiOS TV viewers, which is the ability to expand storage using external drives. This is supported on the Cisco DVR’s as well as Motorola 7000 series DVR’s. This feature is not supported by the Motorola 6416 and 2708. While we have done nothing to block plugging in any eSATA drive to the DVR’s, if you use a drive that has not been qualified by Verizon then we will not be able to support any potential problems. Please also be aware that we found several units that did not work properly due to the extreme sustained I/O performance required to support this application. We plan to continually increase the number of qualified units, but at launch we will support Western Digital My Book AV DVR Expander 500GB and 1TB. A 2TB drive is currently in qualification as well as drives from other manufacturers. As those are qualified we will publish them on www.verizon.com. The DVR will also include a history of its activities to provide you insight to what it was doing while you were away. This feature will also reduce duplicate recordings, because the DVR will remember what it has recorded as opposed to only having reference to what is currently on local storage. We are also introducing options for the folders. You will be able to select options like “delete all” or “play all” for recorded content contained in folders. On the multi-room DVR front the most exciting advancement is for those of you that have more than one DVR. IMG 1.9 enables DVR’s to access each other’s recordings. With this capability and external storage expansion any HD set-top box or DVR in your home could theoretically have access to terabytes of recordings. We have also enabled the ability to manage DVR recordings from any HD set-top box in the home, which has been a popular request from FiOS TV viewers with Home Media DVR service. Additionally the DVR will support an undelete feature allowing you to restore recordings that were deleted similar to the recycling bin on your computer. Also a popular request for new DVR features was the ability to extend a recording while it is in progress. This option has been added to the Program Info page and Context Sensitive Menu. “Extend Live Recording” enables you to extend an active recording by 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 30 minutes and 1hour. The last new feature for DVR is automatic chapter creation that let’s you easily jump around a recording. Bring up the info bar and you’ll see thumbnails for scenes in the recordings. Select a scene and jump right to it. More ways to get to what you want faster. There are many more enhancements to the IMG that I couldn’t cover in this post. The internal release notes are nearly 100 eye straining pages long. If I didn’t cover an enhancement you wanted in this post chances are it’s in this release... take some time and explore once you are upgraded. As always we welcome feedback here, on the Idea Exchange and Twitter. We are committed to maintaining an open dialogue with our customers from ideation through development and deployment, so please don’t hesitate to let us know how we are doing. We may not be able to respond to all of your requests, but are committed to collaborating on a best path forward for all of us. * high definition resolution graphics and smooth animations require Cisco HD capable set-top boxes or Motorola 7000 series devices Dmon4u 04-14-11, 12:01 PM So, we are all forced to get a PIN for Parental Controls because they are now 'ON' for everyone by Default ! And, we still can not change the on-Screen time for the Channel Info that appears with every channel change. If this info is so important then why not make it 3/4 of the screen and in large print with an option to go full screen for the Elderly? How about 30 seconds for those that can not read very fast. Wink, wink, nudge, nudge, know what I mean, say no more. Nice. C*Tedesco 04-14-11, 09:14 PM HD canvas not supported by the 6416. Did we know this already? I must have missed this. Dang it. Well, that will only affect one box. Still, little bit of a downer. stevec325 04-14-11, 09:36 PM And, we still can not change the on-Screen time for the Channel Info that appears with every channel change. We're pretty happy with 1.9. There are a ton of new functions and UI improvements, and the improvements to the DVR alone are worth anything, in my opinion. aaronwt 04-15-11, 06:38 AM Release notes posted at Verizon.com (http://forums.verizon.com/t5/Verizon-at-Home/FiOS-TV-Interactive-Media-Guide-1-9-Release-Notes/ba-p/301355) ........... So only just now, in 2011, you are able to extend a live recording? That should have been standard from the launch of the FIOS DVRs. Series recordings had this option already. I always just recorded the next show if I needed to extend a live recording so I never gave this much thought. This feature will accomplish the same thing using less drive space though, so that will be good. Jakes 04-15-11, 08:00 AM HD canvas not supported by the 6416. Did we know this already? I must have missed this. Dang it. Well, that will only affect one box. Still, little bit of a downer. This was known. You can exchange your 6416 for a 7216 free of charge though if you have a store nearby. mproper 04-15-11, 08:04 AM I was surprised to see this when I sat down last night (Harrisburg area). Gotta say I was digging it, but I need to map a few more buttons to my Harmony to take full advantage (never did map the A-B-C-D buttons). There were also a couple of places I couldn't figure out how to navigate to, such as if you press Info during a recording, there's an "Options" button in the lower-right and I couldn't figure out how to get into that to see what was there. Plus now I have to go get a HDD. |
