bad1550 06-02-06, 09:22 AM I run a composite cable (single yellow RCA) from my receiver to the video in jack on the projector.
I thought about running that cable into the HTPC capture card to save the 30' RCA cable, but decided the headache of configuring through another component wasn't worth the headache.

Fast:
I already ran wires thru ceiling and cannot run a yellow composite from projector.
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Bob
Backlash 06-02-06, 10:43 AM Sure.
Tape some florist wire to the end of one of your existing wires and pull it into the ceiling by pulling the existing wire out the other end. Then tape a composite wire to that near the termination of the first wire (try to make it as small as possible so a bit farther down than the first termination) and using the florist wire, pull it back through.
If you have a wire fish that would be good as well since it's stronger.
Oh, since they're hard to find in the right length, I used a 50' RCA audio pair from RS and just split it. That way I had a really long composite and a really long subwoofer cable. It's the cheap way to go, but what kind of fidelity do you really need from your on screen display?
red5908 06-02-06, 10:56 AM I need assistance regarding cable setup from HD72 to Cable box and receiver.
I have a HDMI going from the HD72 to DVD player, DVI cable from HD72 to Cable box and Component cable from HD72 to Xbox 360. I currently have a red/white audio cable from cable box to receiver for sound.
I just set up Pioneer 1015 receiver but the On Screen setup does not show up on the screen? What additional cables need to be run for the best Home Theater setup?
Thanks,
Bob
Bob,
I believe the 1015 outputs it's video to composite, s-video, and component. Try hooking the Xbox to one of the component inputs on the 1015 and connect the HC72 component input to the component monitor output on the 1015. This should allow you to see the setup inputs on the component input of the HD72.

I don't know about the Pioneer, but on my Harmon Kardon AVR-135, the onscreen setup is not available on Component, but only through composite or svhs.
Has anyone purchased the HD6800 from costco.ca? It's pretty much a re-labelled HD72....wondering if its good and what the mount is like.
I emailed Optoma and told me they couldn't go into details regarding the HD6800 because it is a projector they specifically manufacture for Costco.
He went on to say that he could tell me they were essentially the same projector.
Due to the return policy Costco has I'll be purchasing the HD6800 pretty soon and report back.

Very interesting. Here is what the Costco web site lists for the HD6800:
"The Optoma HD6800 projector is a true 720p, high-performance home theater projector. The HD6800 features new technologies to deliver brighter images and truer colors to the projected picture. The Optoma HD72 DLP™ home theater projector provides great color saturation and subtle color details for the best image quality."
It looks like somebody forgot to chage all of the HD72 references when they posted the info on Costco.com.

richsupergood 06-02-06, 11:30 PM Hi guys newbie here
really appreciate your tips - great site-
I'm going to take the plunge on the HD 72 - ooops ....I mean the HD 6800 as soon as I get the coupon thing sorted out. BUT what does anybody think of the H78DC3 ? is this unit worth moving up to or is it overpriced considering the HD72 is now - or soon to be - so reasonably priced??
Rich
gottahavapj 06-02-06, 11:56 PM Why would you spend more to get an HD 6800 from Costco when a quick glance at three sponsors of this wonderful forum at the top of this page shows them selling HD 72's for less money? A return policy only goes so far. How about the free lamp and extended warranty also?? I see no mention of that on the Costco site.
Patronize your forum sponsors :)
tones3311 06-02-06, 11:59 PM Well you dont really need the free lamp or the warranty if you buy from Costco....if anything goes wrong just return it.....in a years time return it anyway for a refund and get an upgrade...:)
Uatatoka 06-03-06, 12:07 AM Hi Rich,
The H78 is an outstanding machine that will kick out a nicer picture than the HD72. Better blacks with no dithering (TI's DC3 w/ dark green segment in the colorwheel). It also has better optics, power focus and zoom, and vertical lens shift. It won't be as bright though, and many owners have had lamp issues with it becoming dim and unwatchable within 300-700 hours.
The HD72 has no lamp issues (totally different lamp and cooling design). It had some reset issues with early firmware, but that's been resolved. It's a great machine and one of the brightest single chip DLP projectors out there. 850 lumens after D65 calibration in bright mode (650 in low lamp mode), and even more with higher brilliant color settings. Just something to consider when comparing the two...needless to say I chose the HD72.
Mike
mystery 06-03-06, 08:49 AM Mike,
Do you use the Brilliant Color option and if so, does the fan noise going louder and softer depending on the scene bother you? Also, how does your particular remote work with your screen? Do you have to point it back at the pj or up at the ceiling?
Have you tried keystoning whether you need it or not? I have low ceilings and am trying out a 106" screen which means I have to upward tilt my H57 a bit and then use 4 to 6 clicks on the vertical keystoning in order to square up the picture. It's livable. I'm wondering if the HD72/6800 might be comparable. The H57 has a pretty large offset as well unfortunately.
Thanks Mike! :)

richsupergood 06-03-06, 02:37 PM Gentlemen,
Thanks for the info.
Costco.ca is selling the HD72/6800 in August with a coupon discount... that's it for me - I'm done. I have always been a huge fan of the costco return policy but more importantly I'm sick of being stung at my doorstep by COD brokerage fees i.e. when I order things over the internet and they are shipped to me from the USA - put that together with the resonable price from Costco and its a no brainer - even if I don't get the free bulb. - price is not everything
I too have a low ceiling issue (7ft) and will be watching the threads for advice.
Rich
Uatatoka 06-03-06, 03:12 PM Hi Wayne,
I always use variable 0-10 Brilliant Color. How much so depends on the source I'm watching. Optoma implemented the adjustable BC by using a small clear segment in the color wheel. At full brilliant color more of the clear segment is used giving more lumens, contrast, and stronger color saturation. The brightness comes from using more of the clear segment and the vibrant colors come from TI's BC proccesing. As such the fan noise is unaffected.
At the lower settings you'll get a dimmer picture with less saturated (but more accurate) colors. It definitely gives a plasma like quality at the higher settings which I use for PC and HD sports as it looks duller without it. With movies I turn it way down for the color accuracy and too bright isn't good for that cinematic effect.
I tried keystoning (don't need it) and it didn't affect the picture quality. I would'nt hesitate to use it if I had to. For small adjustments you can even live with a little tilt and no keystoning too. It's hard to detect with proper screen masking.
Cheers,
Mike
mystery 06-03-06, 04:36 PM Great response Mike. :) Thanks!
I thought I'd read for sure that BC utilization causes the fan to fluctuate in speed depending on the scene. I'm glad that it isn't an issue for you. Maybe I'm getting that confused with something else.
Any problems with the remote bouncing signals off of your screen?
Wayne
Uatatoka 06-03-06, 06:37 PM You're probably thinking of Image AI. That feature is a contrast enhancing feature that works by adjusting the lamp brightness (voltage) between low and high modes, or anywhere inbetween, depending on the scene. It's similar to an auto iris and works, but the fan setting is also tied to the lamp setting so it varies between dark and bright scenes as well. The fan is pretty quiet in both modes so it's not noticeable for most material. I just turn Image AI off and leave it low mode because the native contrast is very good and I'm all about long lamp life. The varying fan can be distracting in quiet movies too (for me at least).
I have no issues with my 2nd remote. It bounces off the screen no problem. It's backlit and very well designed too. I had the weak remote though initially before getting an updated projector with the firmware replacement. They improved it maybe? Or just luck of the draw perhaps...
Cheers,
Mike
mystery 06-03-06, 08:05 PM Thanks again Mike. I was confused after all. :o
It's beginning to sound as if this HD72 is to 720p what the Infocus X1 was to entry level projectors a few years ago. A revolutionary product considering it's price point.
I'm still debating as to whether I should upgrade now from my H57 which throws out an outstanding image @ 1024 x 576. I'm going to be purchasing a 106" screen in a few days, jumping from a 92". I tried a 106" screen yesterday with my H57 and saw no SDE from the couch about 10 or 11 feet away so I guess I can't use that as an excuse to upgrade. :D
Decisions, decisions...
Wayne
Well you dont really need the free lamp or the warranty if you buy from Costco....if anything goes wrong just return it.....in a years time return it anyway for a refund and get an upgrade...:)
Well...It's nice to have that policy at Costco for when things really go wrong with your purchase. They changed the policy on computers, probably due to abuse, so I hope people won't abuse this policy, thus prompting similar results.
mystery 06-04-06, 11:42 AM That's only fair. :)
People should just return projectors to Costco when there's actually something wrong with them.
Wayne
I may have missed it, but the 6800 at Costco shows less lumens than the HD72 on other sites. Has this been confirmed???
Uatatoka 06-04-06, 12:57 PM That's what the spec says, 200 less lumens. No one has measured this though.
mystery 06-04-06, 01:03 PM Fortunately the HD72 lumens spec is bright enough so that 200 less of them on the HD6800 is probably still brighter than most projectors. :)
Wayne

True. This is a really good deal when you consider the screen as well. I'm having a hard time passing on this deal versus costco's panny 900 deal.
mystery 06-04-06, 04:43 PM Unfortunately Costco.com is offering the 106" screen while Costco.ca is only offering the 92" one. I already have a 92" screen and am interested in going larger to exactly 106".
In Canada, we can't order from Costco.com and I presume in the States, that Americans can't order from Costco.ca.
The 92" screen is really useless to me and I'd have to sell it but you're right, this is just too tempting to pass up. I'm dithering though and may hold on to my H57 but going to a larger screen may force me to go 720p due to possible SDE and/or pixellation issues.
Wayne
tones3311 06-04-06, 04:45 PM Mystery,
You should write Costco.ca customer service and ask them to make the 106" screen available. I wrote them and told them they are losing many sales due to only offering the 92 inch screen, which I believe they are. Hopefully it will do some good.

mystery 06-04-06, 05:31 PM I actually did send an email to customer service at Costco.ca asking them if I could somehow take advantage of the Costco.com's 106" screen offer and I got an automated reply of a generic nature so I'm hoping that someone will answer me more directly and specifically during the coming week. I should actually call them on the phone and see if there's a chance to get the larger screen.
I think I will do that and inform them that their American counterpart is offering the 106" screen in the same package.
Good suggestion tones!

mystery 06-05-06, 03:34 PM Okay, here's the news about my call to Costco.ca.
For now they are only carrying the 92" screen but they may be getting the 106" sometime in the future. No time frame was offered to me. The customer service representative put me on hold and spoke to one of their buyers. Apparently their agreement with Optoma is to sell the 92" screen bundled with the HD72 and H78DC3. This may change.
So it looks like anyone ordering this package will receive the 92" screen at least for the forseeable future.

Had anyone tried ceiling mount PJ with the 92" GrayWolf Screen? Would it affect the bright level?
I'm sure this been discussed somewhere before but if anyone can provide a real experience, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I have. The graywolf has a gain of 0.9-1.0 when the HD72 is ceiling mounted so the brightness is unaffected. If table mounted it's really bright with the retroreflective gain of 1.8. The gray helps blacks too, but you'll need to turn up the contrast using AVIA or DVE test patterns to get proper whites.
This combo is really nice, especially with ambient light. The graywolf rejects ambient light better than other screens I've tried if the texture of the screen is no bother.
Mike
mystery 06-05-06, 04:51 PM Oh well. Who knows? Maybe by August when the coupon is valid, the website will show the 106" screen. :)
Shippo,
I can't speak for the Optoma screen with it's 1.8 gain but I have a Da-Lite High Power 2.8 gain screen and my H57 is mounted about 6'4" off of the floor. At that low height, the brightness is very, very good and gets even better when you stand up but it's way better than say, the Da-Lite High Contrast Matte White which I also own.
The trick is to minimize the angle between your eyes and the projector's lens. The smaller the angle, the brighter the image will appear. In other words, you need to avoid a high mounting position with high gain screens or else you need to coffee table mount.
Wayne
gkanders 06-05-06, 06:55 PM I sure wish I could find the coupon in the US. I looked at all of our "coupon books" and don't see any (of course, I didn't even see the projector on the costco.com until this week, so maybe it'll show up before Aug here too).

Just because the serial number is older does not mean it doesn't have the latest firmware. I'd use it, it's probably the latest and greatest FW release if coming from the factory.

mystery 06-05-06, 09:18 PM Hi Rod,
You make good points. I've thought about this and it makes sense. However, I also will be going to a larger screen and I sit a short distance away so it's important to me not to be bothered by any SDE which I believe I may see with the H57.
I do plan on watching more and more HD and hopefully a Blu-ray or HD-DVD player will be in the mix as well.

I just recevied my unit last week from VisualApex.com and was assured that it has the latest firmware. The sales rep even checked with her technical guy and he confirmed. She said they just refreshed their inventory.
When I received my unit it had a 611 in the serial number but I have not had any problems or resets. I think they are flashing "older" units. I think you will be fine.

I completely understand. I went from the H31 to H72 primarily due to SDE at my seating distance. If I could have gotten further back I would have been happy with the H31.
tones3311 06-06-06, 11:34 AM Rod S,
How would you compare the H31 to the HD72 in regards to PQ with DVD's and also again with HD. I find the H31 to be awesome in both aspects....starting to question now if I will see much of a difference going to the HD72.
What do you think?
If I could have gotten back 2x seating and didn't see SDE I would have stuck with the H31. It did a fabulous job on SD DVD's. It was super sharp, Tom calibrated it and it really did look nice. HDTV was very good also. If I hadn't ran both of them side by side I wouldn't have realized how much I like the Brilliant color feature and after a lot of testing I determined I like Truvid too. I can't watch without BC now. For me personally I can sit much closer, not see any SDE, have adjustable BC depending on what I'm watching and HDTV is super clear. HDTV on the 72 is definately better. SD DVD's are sharper on the H31 and the 72 is a touch softer probably due to the upconversion on my Oppo. It's give and take for SD DVD's but for HDTV, color(BC) and 3D depth the 72 is a winner. It's also whisper quiet (in normal mode). I don't use AI primarily because of the higher fan noise and the visual difference was minimal in my mind.
jeff_4242 06-06-06, 01:36 PM Rod: What is BC?
Are you serious that if SDE wasn't an issue you'd be happy with the H31? I ask because the lamp on my H31 just blew and I'm toying with the idea of getting the HD72 instead of just a new lamp. Since the HD72 comes with 2 lamps and I figure I can probably get ~$300 for my H31 the net cost would be $1000. But I'm happy with DVD output quality on the H31 and I'm (just) far back enough that SDE is not an issue so maybe I should save my money and just get another lamp replacement instead.
Although I'm interested in the fan noise aspect. If the HD72 is whisper quiet I would like that a lot! My H31 is a bit louder than it was out of the box now. It could probably use a good cleaning and maybe even a fan replacement but it's not bad enough for me to want to mess with it. I would love to get something quieter.

Is there a good AE900 vs HD72 thread? I've been reading TONS of info but can't really find a good comparison between the two. Maybe I haven't been looking hard enough, but after reading through over 230 pages of material, I thought I'd just ask. Thanks.
I think it is somewhere in this thread but way back. Try a search on this forum.

BC= brilliant color. It's very flexible as you can set it from 0-10 depending on personal preference.
Yes, the H31 I had threw out a great picture. I miss how sharp the H31 was for SD DVDs but I don't miss the SDE which was the over riding factor for me. I always caught myself looking for SDE. It didn't bother anybody else, our friends, my wife, my son...just me!! ARG! The room I have the theater set up in isn't deep enough to get back far enough avoid SDE.
I really intended the H31 to last me til the 1080p units came out and the HD DVD became more mainstream. SDE cured that in a hurry. Now I'm hooked on HDTV, LOST and CSI are just amazingly clear. I personally prefer BC over non BC picture. I didn't realize just how much until I ran them side by side while watching Spiderman II with my son. The 3d effect is better on the 72 and I like the vibrant colors.
My H31 was just slightly louder than the 72 but even the 31 was pretty darn quiet and didn't distract me(I'm fussy about noise). Both of these were on an end table right next to my chair . The 72 runs cooler and doesn't blow as much heat. The 31 was better cause it kept my wife warmer blowing all that hot air.
How loud is the fan in the HD72?
I can hear it if I listen for it in a quiet scene but it is very soft and really whisper is a good adjective. If you run in bright mode then it does get quite a bit louder and definately noticable. If you plan to use AI it runs the fan in high mode. If I had to run it in high fan mode it would annoy me.

geometrician 06-06-06, 11:13 PM I am leaning towards the HD72. I have a few questions for the group to help make the final decisions:
1) Is it definitely the case that with a 8.5 ft ceiling and the desire for a 100" (+/- a few inches) that I will be OK with this projector without keystoning or tilting the screen? I am willing to be a bit flexible in screen size/placement and projector to screen distance, but am not willing to go much below 100" (definitely not less than 92") and am not willing to have a screen sitting less than 2 ft off the floor and would prefer more like 30" from the floor. (My calculations suggest I will be fine, but want "real user" confirmation).
2) Is there a recommended/preferred mount that will get the projector close to the ceiling and still allow for some adjustment to compensate for the lack of lens shift?
3) I am interested in the following setup and would like to know if it works in reality: set up the projector for 16:9 (1280x720) usage with a 16:9 screen, then when I want 768 resolution (mostly for XGA computer output), zoom out and have the projector precisely fill the 16:9 screen vertically with 768 lines. Is this possible? In theory it seems so given the zoom range as long as I mount the projector at the right distance (i.e. far enough forward so the 16:9 image is zoomed some (at least 6.7%) when filling the screen so there is room to zoom out for 768 images). If so, do I need to mount the screen at the top, bottom, or middle of the +/-24 line digitial image shift range?
Any help would be appreciated.
assaf758 06-07-06, 02:51 AM As I intend to use my PJ also for Internet surfing - could someone please confirm that 1600x1200 is supported on the HD72 (the user manual does not mention it as one of the 4:3 modes).

It may be supported but its going to scale it ot its native resolution regardless.

In my experience, with anything but CRT screen you don't want to use anything but the native resolution or text will be blurry.
No laughing in here, but I have an InFocus LP540 currently and obviously am looking at this HD72. Does anyone know if the screen size would be as big on the HD72? I am guessing since my tape measure is not here that it is about 15 feet away from the wall, and it sits about 4' off the ground.
Thanks.
Uatatoka 06-07-06, 11:59 AM It may be supported but its going to scale it ot its native resolution regardless.
Of which there are three native resolutions supported. 1280x720 with +/-24 pixels of image shift, 1280x768 with no image shift, and 1024x768.
1600x1200 will work (I tried it) and is mapped to 1024x768 native so details are lost in the process. Best to just use one of the native resolutions for internet surfing.

Backlash 06-07-06, 04:49 PM I'm going to be ceiling mounting mine in a room that is typically about 68-70 degs. It will be close to the ceiling due to the image offset, but no closer than it would be to a table for normal operation. Will I have any difficulty given that one of the air intakes is on the bottom? Will I have to put some sort of duct and a low speed computer fan to carry fresh air to it?
Next question is who uses/is familiar with Da-Lites screen material? I have a Da-Snap and will probably be changing out my material for the HD72 since it's a lot brighter than the X1. My room is almost totally light controlled, and I'm using a 92" 16:9 screen (curently matte white)
Thanks for both in advance
Backlash 06-08-06, 11:54 AM Anyone know offhand what size screws this uses for mounting? (Edit: Right. M3. great thing this thread search tool)
BTW, the Atdec mount is truly awesome! All 4 arms will be used (if anyone wants I'll explain how) and from what I've seen it's about one third the price of the Chief mount.
One weird thing is that most sites call it an aDtec not aTdec mount. Anyway froogle "TH-WH-PJ-FM"
Plus it has a quick release so you can attach the base to the ceiling and then just slap the assembled PJ/mount right in.
But yeah, screw size? I don't really want to carry my PJ around Home Depot.
Uatatoka 06-08-06, 12:10 PM But yeah, screw size? I don't really want to carry my PJ around Home Depot.
LOL, I've been there. It's a metric M3 IIRC. You'll have to go to a hardware store though, as Home Depot didn't carry smaller than M4.
Mike
Lowes carrys an M3 -16 screw, even though they said they didn't. It's in their specialty fastener drawers. You may need washers to go along with them. They carry three lengths, but I think the -16 is the correct one for most mounts.
Backlash 06-08-06, 03:48 PM Hey, if you use the Atdec mount, or even if you don't, M3 are the same as computer screws. If you have any laying around from previous computer builds, there should be some 3/8" in the bags they send.
For the Atdec, turn the mounting arms over (they're C shaped) so that the C faces up, away from the PJ, that will allow plenty of thread into the PJ even with a (highly recommended) #4 or #6 washer.

That appears to be the same as the Mustang MT-PROJSP-FLAT mount which I have but haven't used. If it is the same mount, the only problem is that the offset is twice that of the Chief RPA (5" - 2.5"). It is a nice mount but given the HD72 offset, I am ordering the Chief mount to save the extra 2.5".

kin_ng5 06-08-06, 05:32 PM User of hd72 with or without the reset problem - would you please post the first 7 digits?
i just got a replacement & the serial starts with
083F608
my original was
083F611
kinda piss to see the numbers on my go backward instead of increasing.
what do you think? should i even open the box?
I had the 611 and it had the reset problem until I got it exchanged. Now its 614. Hopefully that's the end of it.
Vince Anzalone 06-09-06, 10:34 AM I had the 611 and it had the reset problem until I got it exchanged. Now its 614. Hopefully that's the end of it.
It's obvious that the reset problem firmware version "transition point" is
somewhere in the 611 series.
I have a 611 numbered PJ but the image icon is correct when in ceiling front
projection mode (thus hopefully no reset problem).
Fingers and toes are now crossed. So far, so good. :)
BudBray 06-09-06, 12:11 PM Just got a RESET...GRRRR! About 10 hrs on the bulb (of course it now says 0) My unit is a 069 so i just called Optoma Canada in Richmond Hill & waiting for a return call. Plan to call Visual Apex and BLAST them. They ASSURED me their units were updated.
No projector this weekend.

Do you mean "609" rather that "069"?
All previous people posting have a 6 as first digit (I could be wrong).
snatches 06-09-06, 07:25 PM Not to derail the current discussion, but I am planning on picking up the HD72 in two weeks, and the primary reason is for use with an Xbox 360, so two questions:
1) Can anyone link me to pics of the HD72 running games? Specifically X360 games if possible,
and
2) Does anyone have any general feedback about using this PJ with the 360? I'm setting it up with an Optoma Graywolf 92" screen.....
Greatly appreciated!

Sorry, yes, it's 609. I called Visual Apex and they apologised for telling me I had the updated firmware when I obviously didn't. While I was driving to Toronto to drop off the PJ at Optoma, Optoma US called my house. Seem Visual Apex contacted them about my complaint. They left a message asking me to contact them & i could have my PJ serviced in Toronto. Toronto said they don't replace, just repair which is fine by me, as long as they update the firmware, i'm happy to get my original unit back with the few bulb hours i had on it. They said a 24 hr turn around so i should be able to pick it up Monday after work.
BudBray 06-09-06, 08:22 PM On a side note, have people been adjusting the red, blue & green GAIN or BIAS in the IMAGE/ADVANCED RGB/Gain/Bias menu? I'm not sure which to use when using DVE. Any ideas? So far (before the reset...) the red & blue were bang on but the green was way off so I don't know which I should be adjusting.

Signia,
Do you have the firmware update for the HD-DVD? I read somewhere this improved the situation for HD72 users.
I'm not sure how to calculate this, if I have 9ft ceiling, what is the maximum screen width I could go with? I'm thinking of 12 feet-14 feet wide, but not sure if this can be done with the offset issue. The room is 18 feet wide and 28 feet long.
Signia,
Do you have the firmware update for the HD-DVD? I read somewhere this improved the situation for HD72 users.
I do have the latest firmware. Seems like SD DVD work fine. It is the HD-DVD that have a problem.
EEBuckeye 06-10-06, 09:25 AM Ok.. I am an owner of the IN76 (which is a great projector) but the fan noise bothers me so I am serioiusly considering switching to the HD72 (my other choice initially).
Two of the main reasons I did not go with the HD72 is:
1) Firmware update for resets - buying a projector that has to be fixed as soon as receiving it by sending it to Optoma
2) Future firmware updates - not upgradable by the user for future problems
Anyone have any other problems or generally not happy with anything regarding the HD72?
Thanks!
I just got mine hooked up yesterday and I cannot recommend it enough. The picture is fantastic. I cant believe this projector was only $1800!!!
Backlash 06-10-06, 10:27 AM I bought mine specifically for my Xbox 360 and my DVB318. I have to say that coming from the InFocus X1, the HD72 is like night and day. It's a lot brighter, the detail is fantastic, and the colors, it's like the X1 was in B&W before. They just pop. Even the Dashboard is beautiful to look at now.
What games did you want pictures of? I have PDZ, COD2, PGR3, DOA4, GRAW, and Q4(sucks). If you let me know what game you want to see, along with location/scene, etc. I'll see what I can do.
And yes, for $1700 and an extra lamp, this thing is just too good.
That reset issue sounds like it sucks. Thankfully a retailer that bundles projectors ( ;) ) is selling units at 614.
bad1550 06-10-06, 10:55 AM I just recently purchased my HD 72 from Buy.com and I am very satisfied with it. I am a first time projector owner and the picture looks incredible on a wall painted with Behr Ultra White flat paint. Buy.com did not offer the free bulb, can I still qualify if I go thru Optoma?
Thanks,
Bob
Backlash 06-10-06, 11:11 AM Ok, this is slightly irritating, but will hopefully be resolved. The lamp that was sent is a BL-FU200A. Not the right lamp for the HD72 (BL-FU220A). I've sent an email, but for those of you who bought from the same people, check your spare lamps. The one I have is for Optoma's EP750, EP753, EP755, H56, H55, and H50.
Bob, the free lamp was not through Optoma, but through different retailers.

Could you post some pics of PDZ and GRAW? PDZ multiplayer pics (such as desert/subway levels) and single player GRAW (maybe rooftops or another city level)?
Those are games I'd be playing on the HD72, but was worried about brightness/sharpness levels after watching a crt tube set for so long.
Thanks!
I dont' have any pix but can vouch that it's quite impressive. The contract is on par (if not better) than my 2405 dell LCD.

Backlash 06-10-06, 05:36 PM For the setup, I've been using the THX optomizer and my blue glasses. I have to say that the blue glasses suck, so If anyone has an idea how to do a better setup for not too much, please let me know.
And did anyone else find it strange that for a ceiling mounted unit, the horizontal image shift controls are backwards, as if it was still upright? Weird. Bad programming.
And I'll have 360 pics tomorrow as my wife has our camera.

Now I am pissed. I ordered the HD72 and received it a 2 weeks ago. I was assured from visualapex.com that it had the latest firmware. I even have the e-mail to prove it. Turned it on this morning and guess what, reset. They are going to get an earful.
EEBuckeye 06-12-06, 09:32 AM Please let me know if Optoma will do a hot swap for this so you don't have to wait for the projector to be sent and returned. I think they used to do this at least.
I will be calling visualapex first. I think it is on them to replace it.
Mikenificent1 06-12-06, 10:25 AM How do you change the "blue screen" that flashes when there is no signal to black, and how do you turn off the "HDMI" messages?
Dave Mack 06-12-06, 11:13 AM Oy, Signia. I feel your pain. Visual Apex are pretty good. I got my h57 there. I think Optoma is slipping. Another reason I'm leaning towards the IN76.

Best way is to use an ND filter you can get at a Camera store, try a ND2 first. You can probably rig up some kind of way with tape or velcro and use a less expensive smaller sized ND2 lens.
Well I decided to call Optoma since they do have the advance replacement. We will see...

Yes, '4:3 mode' horizontally compresses 16:9 for use with an anamorphic lens.
Just got my 6800 from Costco. Turned it on (no tweak) with a dvd playing (Varsity Blues), 106 inches on the wall. I'm in love.

One week for delivery. The screen box is like 8 feet tall. Snug fit in my G35.
BudBray 06-12-06, 09:06 PM Got my pj back from Optoma Canada (Richmond Hill) and saw the repair sheet (didn't get a copy for myself) but it stated FW update ver C 0.1 to 0.3 and I checked the menu icon and it was correct. So hopefully the worst is over. Also sent a reply to Optoma US describing my adventures and they stated it was THEM who told Visual Apex the units were updated where a few seemed to have slipped thru. I told the guy in the email that VA is getting a bad rep selling units not updated but saying they are. Also put a bug in his ear to push for a user friendly firmware update software. Not holding my breath on that one but it would solve a few problems.
So, my PJ is happily re-mounted on my basement ceiling ,0 hours on the bulb (ya, right, more like 12) and tomorrow the DVE does setup.

I received the replacement HD72 from Optoma this morning under the advance replacement program. The serial# has 617 in it so hopefully this is an updated unit. I will post impressions later.
BTW, the 360 on this projector is awesome. I have been playing COD 2 and it is amazing!!! I will post pictures but wanted to wait until I got the projector dialed-in.

It's probably garbage on the edge of the video signal. Although usually at the top and bottom, I guess it could show up on the side too. Remember that the HD72 displays with no overscan natively, so any "crap" at the edge of the picture that wouldn't normally be visible on a TV with overscan will be visible on this projector. To see if this is the case, hit the zoom button and set it to 1 and see if the lines disappear. If they do, it's in the signal coming from the DVD player.

www.cine4home.com had detailed reviews of both projectors and also the HC3000 which is similar to the HD72
Hi guys, I have just sold my mits 65 and my new home with theater will be completed next month. The H72 is the front runner at this point. I am experienced will HT but not with projectors. How hard is it to mount the H72 and screen. It seems like you have to have perfect measurements? Ceiling height is not an issue 9' and 106" screen. I am just worried that I will have a hard time setting this up with the lense being centered and having to be so far above the screen. Thanks, Jeff
c.barry14 06-13-06, 07:41 PM I hope your issue is resolved. I returned mine with a date of 0608 and got a 0607 back. I called Optoma and they told me it was brand new unit that never left the factory and had a firmware upgrade. Suppose I will find out in few hours. Good Luck with yours

You know I have seen several references to that site lately on reviews as well as some posted "scores" from the reviews. But what do the numbers mean, because to be honest they are very confusing. Take for example, the comparison between the H72 and the In76:
HD72i
Evaluation Picture overall: 2,2 (Good -)
Black Level & Contrast 1,9 (Good)
Gamma Distribution 2,2 (Good -)
Sharpness & Interpolation digital/analog 2,4 (Good -) (due to Chromabug)
2,9 (Satisfying)
Color Range / Temperature 2,1 / 2,0
De-Interlacing 1,4 (Very good -)
Other aspects 2,2 (Good -)
IN76
Evaluation overall: 1,9 (Good +)
Equipment 1,7 (Good +)
Operation 2,3 (Good -)
Technology 2 (Good)
Picture 2,1 (Good -)
Price / Performance 1,4 (Very good -)
smyth22 06-13-06, 09:44 PM The lower the number the better the score; see for example 1.4 = very good while 2.0 is merely good. If you compare scores from one projector to another on the same dimension, it gives you a pretty good idea of relative strengths and weaknesses. They usually have two sets of numbers at the end of each review - one deals with PQ specifics and the other with broader topics like operation. I feel there reviews are technically sound and use a consistent methodology which facilitates the comparison of one projector to another. To get a better idea, I would go to the site and read one the reviews rather than just look at the numbers.
Good luck
Peter
So the 72i has the Faroudja chip and the American one doesn't?
Thats correct.
After using the projector that was a replacement from Optoma for a couple of hours, I have a few things to report.
- Remote control definetly works better. Better range, better response
- Settings have "stuck" no problems so far.
- Projector turns off normally. On my old model the fan would continuously run even after powered off.
Thats it. So far so good.
EEBuckeye 06-14-06, 09:09 AM I actually like when the fan runs after the projector is turned off - this is common for projectors to cool the bulb. Others have reported the same thing but I would prefer the cautious route and cool for awhile after power off.
Fast351 06-14-06, 09:26 AM I think Signia was referring to the fact that some of the projectors ran indefinitely after turning the projector off. I had that happen at least once on my old projector pre-replacement. Hard poweroff using the switch was the only way to get it to stop.

The built-in TI solution does everything the Faroudja does for NTSC material (passed all deinterlacing tests on HQV). The Euro models needed Faroudja for PAL, which the TI had issues with IIRC.

Correct. Not exactly known. A technical source from Optoma has not verified which it is. Only visual comparisons have been made and no loss of source resolution was noticeable at all between 720p and 1080i. This is a very sharp and bright projector too, where noise and mpeg artifacts in the source are easily detectable. Loss of source resolution should be detectable I would think. Trust your eyes on this one IMHO...
If it does bob the only reason to explain why it looks so good is you're getting full horizontal resolution (1920x1080i -> 1920x540p -> 1280x540p -> 1280x720p) and interpolating only 180 vertical lines. With so much of the native resolution already there the interpolation of the remaining data points is very accurate.
Or, it could weave and TI nor Optoma has officially verified it (proprietary perhaps)! Either way, I'm not losing sleep over it.

Backlash 06-15-06, 01:37 PM Concerning the free lamps that many received from their dealers, everyone check your packages. The dealer I got mine from had received the wrong lamp from Optoma (it's Optoma's promotion is seems) and had sent out several hundred of the wrong model before I caught it, since they figured Optoma had sent the right part.
If Optoma sent the wrong part to my dealer, odds are they sent it to your dealer as well.

Not losing sleep here either. It looks darn good at 1080i or fed 720P and at normal seating distance I think it would be tough to tell anyway. I expect my next source component will have the latest and greatest weave/bob/mix so it's really a non issue for me.
kin_ng5 06-16-06, 02:28 AM I use my STB Samsung SIR-T165 for HD viewing. For 1080i signals, I found that feeding it directly to my X1 is sharper than converting to 720P first on the STB. This I think is because feeding 1080i directly will result in only one scaling by the X1. Feeding 720P will result in 2 scalings (1080i to 720P by STB then by X1). On the HD72, feeding 1080i also results in one scaling by the HD72, but feeding 720P will also result in one scaling by the STB only. What’s surprising is feeding 720P to HD72 is sharper than 1080i. It looks like my few year old STB scales better than the new HD72 for 1080i signals. That seems to indicate HD72’s 1080i scaling isn’t very good.

I'm seeing minor rainbows mostly on bright white portions. When there's a bright section surrounded by black.
Is it safe to say as the bulb dims a little and the whites become less intense I will notice it less and less?
Anyone get a GW screen, not a GWII, with the 6800/HD72 Costco bundle? I did. Is there a difference between the two?
mumbles3k 06-17-06, 05:19 PM I'm too scared to read this entire thread to see if anyone posted this info yet, but I just picked up a Samsung Blu-ray player and hooked it up to my HD72. While outputting a 1080p signal, I switched over to "native" and the picture got bigger. When outputting a 1080i signal, it gets smaller. That suggests to me that it bobs 1080i content, but does a straight downconversion to 720p for 1080p content. So there ya go.

You sure the zoom/overscan settings are at 0 for both resolutions? The HD72 tracks that by input resolution and input port if I remember right.

mumbles3k 06-17-06, 09:27 PM No, the two resolutions display the same sized picture when in 16:9 mode. The only variation comes when the projector is set to display the source's native resolution.
Dave Mack 06-17-06, 10:13 PM I think Mumbles is right! On my H57 (which is 576P) when i hit NATIVE on a 720P signal it does the same thing, like a 30% zoom.
gozorak 06-18-06, 10:11 PM hey guys. Im thinking about buying my first projector and I think im going with the H72. I will use it for Xbox primarily but as far as DVD's just how great is it at 480p and should I stick with the H72 or should I also buy an Infocus 4805 with its great deinterlacer with great 480p performance? Then I would have 2 PJs which might be nice.

As I understand it - you'll want to get a upconverting DVD player like the OPPO to best enjoy your DVD collection.
Even with its great deinterlacer - I can't think of a single way the 4805 is better than the H72.

On another note... been reading, and still can't figure out if my room configuration would work with the HD72. Attached is an unscaled drawing I made. It's a fixed screen 76 3/4" x 43 1/4" (88" diagonal).
Can someone help me? Would the IN76 work better?
Thanks!

The HD72 will be perfect for this install. Don't forget the HD72 also has +/-1.5" of digital lens shift to help you out here as well (IN76 does not). The IN76 will work, you'll just have to drop it down from the ceiling 8-10" whereas the HD72 will sit flush to the ceiling.
Since when is this a IN76 pricing thread though?! Let's stay on topic...
JavaGuy 06-21-06, 09:18 AM The IN76 will work, you'll just have to drop it down from the ceiling 8-10" whereas the HD72 will sit flush to the ceiling.
Uatatoka, just to confirm... my floor to ceiling measurement is 91 1/4" (7' 6")... So you're saying the HD72 will work as long as it's flush mounted to the ceiling? And the IN76 will also, as long as it's mounted approx. 7 feet from the floor?
Don't forget the HD72 also has +/-1.5" of digital lens shift
There's no mention of a lens shift with the HD72 on optoma's website. The HD7100 has it though. Are you referring to keystone correction? I'd rather not have to rely on keystone correction.
Again, thanks for you help on this guys.

The native resolution of the HD72 is 1280x768. So, if you feed it a 720p source with 1:1 scaling, you have 48 extra pixels (24 above and 24 below the picture). With a "digital shift," you can move the image 24 pixels up or down, which translates into ~ 1.5" ... no keystoning.
JavaGuy 06-21-06, 11:28 AM Thanks for the clarification. - JavaGuy

Roughly. For the HD72 you'll have ~5.5" between the center of the lens and the ceiling which is typical of a flush mount when you account for typical ceiling mounts. The +/- ~1.5" of "digital shift" is helpful for fine tuning.
For the IN76 you'll have ~12.5" between center of lens and ceiling so you'll need an extension to drop the projector to this level. Variable extensions are easy to come by so either projector is a go.
Read (most) of this VERY LONG thread and wondering what DVD player is recommended. Sounds like a lot of people have had trouble with the OPPO and the Panny S97. I was inclined to buy the S97, however I wouldn't mind buying a cheaper but good DVD player. Can I get decent performance with the HD72 and a cheaper DVD player?

steviec 06-23-06, 06:44 PM Has anyone else tried out the new Samsung bluray player with their HD72?
It easily accepts a 1080P signal and just rescales it and boy does it look good!
I also run the toshiba HD-XA1 player at 1080i into it and it looks great too!
Big difference compared to my oppo or anything else.
The 1080P in is a real shocker as most displays won't accept it.
Glad I got my Optoma HD72!

mystery 06-23-06, 07:07 PM So the obvious question Stevie is.....drum roll please.....
Which looks better, the HD-XA1 or the Samsung BD player?
And what of 720p? It looks terrible coming from the Toshiba and 1080i is preferred but can you pixel map the Samsung to the HD72 with great results and if so, is it better than 1080p downrezzed to 720p on the projector or worse or is there no difference?

Forget the pixel mapping and forget having the Samsung do anything but outputting 1080p digital directly into the projector.
Pictures can't convey the actual image to get an idea of how good it is.
I can tell you this:
Hd-dvd at 1080i looks better probably because they are using the VC-1 codec.
However I was thinking i made a bad purchase buying the Samsung BDP-1000 after reading all the terrible feedback on the all the forums.
Truth is: The fifth element looks slightly better with more detail than either the superbit or newest special edition.
Underworld Evolution looks and sounds significantly better than the standard dvd release I own.
I was not going to get bluray but at this point being able to input 1080P with the titles i really want gets the one up from me.
When HD-DVD comes out with King Kong and V for Vendetta that may change!
At this point it is best to have both formats.

digital_dilemma 06-24-06, 03:38 PM FYI - not sure of the total amount, yet, but HD72 dealer price dropping significantly then. Don't think the free lamp will be available any longer, though. Will the new price make up for the cost of the spare lamp? Probably not, but it means you'll be able to save dinero now instead of wondering a few years from now, "where the *#@! did I put that spare lamp?" Anyway, for those on the bubble, this should present a significant price differential between the HD72 and the IN76 (unless, of course, Infocus follows suit :D )

I've always used the OPPO OPDV971H 720p/1080i up-converting DVD player with my HD72. Never had a single issue and it looks outstanding with the DCDi deinterlacing and scaling to 720p over DVI or HDMI.

OK, I hate to ask this, and the answer may be a couple dozen pages back, but...
Has anyone discovered the solution to eliminating the "white crush" problem on this projector.
Otherwise, it looks great.

It's been answered many times before (search the thread for more detail)...
Turn your 'contrast' setting down until it goes away, or better yet get AVIA to properly set brightness and contrast (black and white levels respectively) using test patterns.

No, is that it?? Of course I adjusted the contrast and brightness. I still do not get much detail in the light areas.
"Turning the contrast down until it goes away" produced a, you guessed it, low contrast image.
If that's the solution, then I'll live with it.
Is any one using high power as their screen? I did a search and couldn't find any.
mystery 06-26-06, 09:24 PM I am but not with the HD72 though. Currently using it with the H78DC3. However, I also have the H57 which is 1100 lumens so it's very close to the brightness of the HD72 and with an ND2 filter it's a great match!

An Optoma engineer (TzungILin) verified the projector is capable of displaying full white and black detail (0-100 IRE) when calibrated. I saw this initially too out of the box.
If you've already properly tuned contrast and brightness then it could be a gamma issue (film, PC, etc.) or another setting such as brilliant color too high. BC uses the white segment more so it could contribute to brighter whites even though its capable of distinguishing all white levels.
Also the first 100 hours or so the whites are pretty hot when the lamp is new. Then image tones down a bit after which you should re-check the contrast and brightness settings. If it's still too bright a ND2 filter could help also. An ISF or guitarman calibration would also perfect the image...

So much info and so little time to read it all.
Anyway, let me keep it brief… I need a bright projector for under $3000 for my family room that is not a dedicated home theater: windows, wife (read: low light)
My screen is 106’ diagonal Draper Electric M1300 suspended from the wall at 7.5 feet from the floor and there is also a 12 inches black drop material.
The projector will be mounted on the ceiling: 8ft on the peerless mount and about 11.5 ft from the screen.
All lights are recessed, can be dimmed, but cannot be totally turned off when watching tv/dvd due (wife’s law).
The seating is located 13.5 ft from the screen
QUESTION#1: according to Optoma calculation I must have at least 12.3 ft distance for my 106’ screen: I do NOT, it is 11.5 – WILL IT BE AN ISSUE?
QUESTION#2: I have read that 106’ screen and 8ft ceiling may be a problem due to the 27%-32% large offset -- Can anyone emphasize how bad this is?
QUESTION#3: Will I have a problem with my Peerless Mount and HD72?
QUESTION#4: If not HD72, then what? (Epson 550, BenQ); whatever it is, it’s gotta be BRIGHT.
Thank you and have a great day!

It never ceases to amaze me the number of newbies who come on the site and aren't willing to sift through the site seeking information. That’s why it is a discussion thread. I have to wonder, since you’ve made no commitment to read through the thread why you think someone should commit to resolving your issues for you? Regarding your questions: (#1) I think you already know the answer (#2) do the calculations (#3) why would you have a problem with your mount and your projector? And (#4) read through the projector forum, search projector reviews, visit the manufacturer's web sites for specifications or visit your local reseller. By the way - the M1300 is a poor choice for your lighting conditions. It has a gain of only 1.0 and in a matte white finish. Your contrast is going to suffer immensely.
At least you weren't asking DVD or HD-DVD questions in a projector thread.
mystery 06-27-06, 02:43 PM Max,
I just bought the Peerless universal mount for my H78 and I measured the holes for the HD72 because I was curious. I put them down on paper according to the manual's distances and then put the Peerless mount over the diagram and it covered up the holes so that the legs of the plate couldn't get at them.
So I don't think that mount will work. I can tell you that the PerfectMounts Everest universal mount will work as I had it in my home and did the same experiment which proved it would work with not only the HD72, but the H78DC3 and the H57 as well which I also own.
Your ceiling height should be just fine. My projector is only about a little over 6' up the wall but then again I have a 0% offset unit. Still, I have used projectors in this exact same spot now for three years without having to keystone. Then again, I've used 92" screen with those projectors but I think you would be okay. I've just had to settle for a screen that starts about 12 to 14 inches off the floor. I have a 106" High Power screen and my H78 is about 12 back or so and I still have some zooming room to spare. It lines up and fills the screen completely from there. Your 11.5 foot distance may be a problem though.
Infocus make bright projectors as chrisinla mentioned.
Wayne
max, you should look at the infocus in76....
Thanks for a quick reply.. Any reason why would Infocus be a better choice? I will start reading the reviews about Infocus... just let me know what to look for.
EEBuckeye 06-27-06, 07:36 PM Ok.. I have now owned both projectors and here are my opinions.. Please feel free to disagree! :) I'm curious what others think of the DLP color wheel noise reported below...
Design
I prefer the looks of the IN76, but that is subjective and both are decent looking projectors.
Picture
Both pictures are great overall with both exhibiting “pop” and the wow factor. People have stated the HD72 has quite a bit of pop which is true, but the IN76 was just as impressive in my eyes (could be due to calibration out of the box). I need to spend more time calibrating the HD72 to really get a feel for the best picture without ISF calibration.
Brightness
The HD72 may be a tad brighter out of the box but both projectors are reportedly very close after calibration.
Contrast
I do miss the out of the box contrast of the IN76. To be fair, the IN76 is much better calibrated out of the box but the same Xbox 360 game (Oblivion) I played with the IN76 was harder to play on the HD72 due to dark scenes. I had to bump up the games brightness settings to be able to play the game. The HD72 will get better though as I spend calibrating it.
Noise
I considered the IN76 a loud projector at least in ceiling mode when compared to my last projector (Panasonic PTL-300u). When first turned on it was very quiet but would ramp up over time. The end result after about 20-30 minutes was what I would consider annoying. I could hear the DLP wheel spin but it was relatively quiet as the fan noise bothered me more. There is a new firmware release for the IN76 that is supposed to address this issue but reports are mixed thus far.
The HD72 fan is VERY quiet and I can not hear it after extended viewing as it does not seem to ramp up. I notice the color wheel noise a little more than the IN76 but I am confused as it is not always present. I do not notice it at all for the first 10 minutes but it becomes noticeable. I have seen other people post that some HD72’s seemed louder than others so Optoma is sending me another unit to compare. Very nice service from Optoma! I can get used to it if the second unit is the same.
Offset
I did not realize how much difference the offset was between the two projectors. I expected to raise the Optoma about 5-6 inches but needed to raise it 13 inches from my previous spot for the IN76. This is not a big deal after installation; however, I now need to take the light kit off of my ceiling fan since it is projected into a corner of the screen. :) Yes, I know I could have calculated it before owning the HD72 but I did not care and it is still not a big issue for me as we never used the ceiling fan light anyways.
1080i conversion
The IN76 is reported to convert from 1080i to 1080p to 720p while the Optoma supposedly converts from 1080i to 540p to 720p. This loss of resolution concerned me about the Optoma and was one of the reasons I went with the IN76. After viewing 1080i material on the HD72 I found it impossible to see the difference at least with my eyes. :) The XBox 360 projects native 720p so conversion is not necessary and I hope future HD players offer the same option.
Misc.
The HD72 has quite a bit of light spill on the ceiling which seems to be coming from a gap around the metal zoom control of the lense and a series of small slots on top which are probably for lamp cooling. This does not bother me at all but others might be slightly annoyed.
Firmware updates can be done at home for the IN76 unlike the HD72. I found this feature to be a big factor in initially choosing the IN76 when the HD72 needed to be sent back to the factory for updates.
Warranty
The IN76 comes with a 1 year warranty while the HD72 comes with a two year warranty. This concerned me about the IN76 as the price for repair is generally very expensive. I want to own the projector for at least 2 years until 1080p projectors are in the same price range and I want to miss the first generation and wait for 3 chip DLP’s. Ha! :)
Price/Performance
Both are truly excellent projectors with great prices. The fact the IN76 is well calibrated out of the box is a big plus. I was amazed how true the colors looked initially. I need to still calibrate the HD72 using Avia to get better results (which I never did with the IN76).
The warranty of the HD72 and the extra bulb is a tremendous deal and will give me piece of mind until I get a 1080p projector in a few years.
Overall
As stated before, either projector will provide a great deal of enjoyment. I believe I can calibrate the HD72 to a much better picture so I would expect their pictures to be close to identical (with the IN76 possibly having slightly better contrast due to excellent out of the box calibration). The firmware update capability of the IN76 is a great feature that I wish Optoma would or could provide.
I sent back my IN76 to purchase the HD72 due to fan noise, extra year warranty and the free bulb and I feel I made the right decision for me. You can not go wrong with either projector!
michellav 06-27-06, 09:15 PM hello guys, have you a callibration exemple. I dont think have seen any calibration for HD72 on this tread.
thanks
EEBuckeye,
That was an EXCELLENT review. For those of us who are on the fence between the two projector, you gave alot of info.
thanks,
J
My only comment is that I prefer the look of the HD72 than the IN76! I plan to ceiling mount the projector in my family room (white ceiling). The IN76 will stick out like a sore tumb. Besides, even if it's white, its an alien looking device.
EEBuckeye -
I think you just pushed me over the fence to the H72. Thanks
Uatatoka 06-28-06, 01:09 AM Great comparison EEBuckeye. I was meaning to ask you about it and you hit all the good points. I'd be surprised if you hear the color wheel on the second unit. I can barely hear it on both HD72's I've owned (I did a firmware swap), but only if I put my ear right next to the unit. Enjoy!
Cheers,
Mike
At least you weren't asking DVD or HD-DVD questions in a projector thread.
Cheap shot. Just TRY asking DVD questions in the DVD forum. The great majority of them have no experience with front projectors, and almost nobody has an HD72. There is not ONE SINGLE entry in the master AVS Members DVD Players and Displays (Look here for player/TV opinons) thread about Optoma HD72's. Not one. So, it seemed to make sense to ask in the < 3500 forum.

Max,
I just bought the Peerless universal mount for my H78 and I measured the holes for the HD72 because I was curious.
Wayne
Thanks for such a detailed reply. I will see if I can extend the distance between the screen and the projector to 12ft. If I can, I will most definitely look into the Everest mount. Otherwise, I will have to consider a more expensive and less quiet Infocus. But at least the image quality should be comparable to the one of Optoma.
Best regards from NY, Maxim
What a great comparison. Thanks a lot. BTW, which c.mount do you use for your projector?
EEBuckeye 06-28-06, 12:59 PM I have my HD72 upside down on a very high shelf.
groth12345 06-28-06, 09:17 PM Just bought one of these upcoverting DVD players. I haven't received it yet but wondering if anyone has any experience with this combo? Thanks in advance.
groth12345 06-29-06, 10:22 PM Hi:
I don't know if its my upconverting DVD Player or not (NS75H Sony), but my HD72 image looks jittery once in a while. Very slight vibrating image. Any ideas what could be causing this? Possibly the upconvert deinterlacing? Thanks.
Ticotva 06-30-06, 11:25 PM Thanks for a quick reply.. Any reason why would Infocus be a better choice? I will start reading the reviews about Infocus... just let me know what to look for.
One reason you might focus on the Infocus off the bat is that it will work for your Throw. I like the HD7100 as well but the price point is a little higher and you have to offset the unit from its center.

jjwstar 07-04-06, 01:04 AM also the hassle of calling to GE to change the serial on the certificate for the 3th year warranty. i will be honest here, lots of hassle. i also have to call my credit card company to see if $2000 was credited back to my account.

BudBray 07-04-06, 09:30 PM I know setting have been posted BUT, what setting are people using now? I'm experiencing "tweakitis" and can never seem to get them "just right". Specifically the RGB/Gain/Bias settings. I've used DVE and frankly can't seem to get the greyscale figured out. I have the Brightness at -9 and Contrast at 14. But the RGB settings still aren't right. The DVE filters have the Red & Blue correct but the Green is off. So...what are YOUR settings?

I bought the Toshiba HD-A1 HD-DVD player and the upconversion is awesome. Really good picture. Well worth it IMHO.

The DVE green filter is off. There is a thread somewhere about it.
groth12345 07-05-06, 05:20 PM I've got mine working very well now upconverting with the Sony. The HD72 picture is incredible...don't know how much better it would be with the Toshiba or the Oppo upconversion.
digital_dilemma 07-05-06, 06:25 PM I guess its okay to say that a couple of AVS Forum's sponsors are offering a sweet deal on the HD72. If not, mods, feel free to wipe clean. Optoma has a $300 rebate through the end of July and these two sponsor sites are also offering a free spare lamp ($399.00 value) to go with the deal through the end of July. Essentially, the deal nets you down to $1200 on the projector. :)

I went through two lamps (currently on my third) on another projector, each rated for 1000 hours. It took me five years to do that. Of course, I also have another setup in another room with a CRT projector :D
Anyway.. a couple of 3000 hour lamps ought to just hold me until 1080P's come down to earth. http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoticons4u/trans/fahr10.gif
I'm in. That deal is too good to pass up. Can anyone recommend a ceiling mount? Thanks
Lindahl 07-06-06, 04:23 PM Sorry to rain on your parade, but it says quite clearly in the rebate form (http://www.projectorpeople.com/SLIS/downloads/rebates/Optoma/OPTHD72_300_073106.pdf) that "Offer not valid with any other rebate, offer or promotion." So, it looks like you choose between the lamp or the cash. I'm not sure how they know you've gotten the free lamp, so you may be able to get both, but I wouldn't count on it.

The lamps are from the vendor, not Optoma, so it doesn't affect the rebate. Me and my parade http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/fam/fam21.gif are just fine!

Yeah, I went out of my way to confirm that fact when placing my order... I specifically said, "It is my intent to apply for the $300 rebate for this projector. There's nothing in the AVS_HD72 package that would preclude my doing that, is there?"
They confirmed I was eligible for the rebate, even though their package included the free lamp (which was also confirmed on my sales receipt.)

Pretty easy to add those. Just pick 'em out on the 'net, copy the address and paste into the message.
Congrats on the purchase. I have a close friend that's an Optoma rep and he told me that it's the best deal available anywhere right now. Of course, three months from now, who knows. Let me know (I'll do the same) if you get the current version, or one of the older versions requiring the upgrade. I'm still in the process of remodeling the media room into a combo kids playroom/media room, so not in a big hurry. I did grab this deal, though, before it went away. So, if it comes in as one of the ones that need to be returned, it won't be a big deal. It'd be a bummer, but I can deal with it at this time if it is.

Roger that, thanks.

The vendor from whom I ordered my projector goes out of their way to specify that:
'Optoma HD72 projectors [purchased from them] feature the latest firmware '
So, I'm hopeful.

coldinMN 07-07-06, 11:18 AM Here is my problem,
When watching a letterboxed DVD (2:35-1) (OPPO w/ DVI) I see a sublte line about 2 - 3 pixels in from the top and bottom edge of the image. Also see when observing a long line of high contrast (mountains against blue sky, shoulders against background). Never notices before, but a friend pointed out. Went down to BB and noticed it on all of there high end displays - The Magnolia sales person had no idea. I also see it on some material coming from my HD cable box. If this was a CRT screen I would say it is a convergence issue, but with a DLP not clear how this happens. Almost looks like ghosting?
Has anyone else noticed this?

Garbage from the edge of the signal. Since this projector does 1-1 pixel mapping with no overscan, you're seeing the crap at the edge of the signal that normally would fall outside of the screen on a RPTV.
To verify, use the ZOOM (not overscan) button and set it to 1 to see if it goes away.
If you don't like the digital distortion this MAY cause, drop a few pixels into your black border on your screen.

Thanks - I did try the zoom as well, but I still see it as well as seeing i within the image (mountains against blue sky). It is diffirent from the noise that sometimes showes up at the very edge of the screen (i.e. the first row). It is not really noise, but just a lighter line - very sutle.

I just hooked up my HD72 with the Sony NS71 (Costco version) and it looks very good with Component. But I switched to HDMI and the improvement was remarkable. Highly recommended.

I just pulled the trigger.
It was a long bit of research - came down to Panasonic AE-900, Infocus 76, and Optoma HD72.
This 300 rebate and free lamp made it much easier to decide.
Everything should be here Wednesday
:D:D:D
I'm thinking about upgrading my current Infocus 4805 to the Optoma HD72.
My 76" screen is 10.5' away from the projector. (which seems to be on the extreme end of fitting using the projector calculator)
The PJ is ceiling mounted (9' ceilings) and the screen is a 1.0 gain.
I have the screen mounted over my corner fireplace and it's currently about 6-8" from the top of the ceiling. (so I do have to angle the PJ up a little bit)
Will I be able to mount the HD72 in the exact spot that my 4805 is mounted?
I've read a lot about people saying the IN76 is more setup friendly, but it's also $400 more than one of the current deals for the HD72 plus lamp.
So would the large offset of the HD72 work with my current set up?
Thanks for any advice!

How's this?.. don't do it! The offset of the HD72 will cause serious keystoning problems for you.

I just purchased it also. Too good of a deal to pass up. The lack of fan noise compared to the in76 made this an easy decision. Now to find a mount.
EEBuckeye 07-07-06, 11:31 PM The fan noise difference was big for me! The HD72 is quiet, however, the IN76 has new firmware which may help the issue.
groth12345 07-09-06, 11:15 AM I just bought the Avia DVD disk and am trying to get the most out of the HD72. It becomes quite confusing after a while which settings are best
I currently have contrast at 10, brightness at -2, color at 2 and hue at 0. Also with AI on. I find that Degamma on video brings out the shadow details better, but many reviewers suggest set it on film.
Can anyone provide the settings they use for most DVD (film, home theater) applications? Thanks.
gozorak 07-09-06, 01:38 PM Im getting the HD72 the only question is from where. Im thinking about Costco with the free Grey Wolf 106" screen. Has anyone else gone this route? Dave Mack 07-09-06, 01:57 PM My 92" graywolf is pretty nice. I think the costco deal comes with the slightly improved Graywolf II...
gozorak 07-09-06, 02:14 PM these boards are great but I find myself often with info overload. I went to the screen board and alot of folks there say the Graywolf II sucks. Having no experience with pj's or screens I have no way of knowing what sucks and what doesnt suck

Costco - you get a screen found all over ebay for about $165
AVS sponsors - you get (a) a better price; (b) a $300 rebate and (c) a free lamp worth $399.
I hope this isn't too tough for you to figure out. :D

Then if I were you I'd continue to go to the screen boards and read the reviews of people who have experience. Personally, I just purchased the HD72, but I'd never use the Greywolf in any iteration. I just don't care for glass beaded screen surfaces and the tiny sparklies you get with them.
groth12345 07-09-06, 02:56 PM I think the Graywolf is just too small. I built my own frame and used 1.3 gain screen material from an ebay supplier. The results are excellent and the cost is very low (under $100). I used black felt on the whole wall and then hung the screen centrally. The screen is 10 feet wide (2.35 aspect ratio/letterbox) and plenty bright for the totally dark room!
gozorak 07-09-06, 03:17 PM well im pretty dense so it might indeed be a bit too much for me to figure out on my own. That why Im here. How about this. What screens do you H72 owners have and use and love? Well if not love. at least like. I found the deal offered by the AVS sponser and I will go with them. Since they also sell screens just tell me which one to get
This isn't a greywolf thread but I have to say the Greywolf screens I've had (3) were all pretty good and none suffered from poor build quality.
The GWII is better than the GWI due to the light beads not being visible and slightly less texture.
The texture is only visible when you're looking for it in light areas (like the sky) or the entire screen is covered in light color (like snow)
That said, the greywolf really does a good job of rejecting ambient light and colors/blacks are great.
The price is what makes the GW so appealing. I'm happy with mine but look foward to the day when I have more room for a bigger screen and more $$$ for a better screen.

Never said the build quality isn't there. It's cheap and that's about the best thing you can say about it and he really should take this discussion thread to the screens forum.

Hi all,
I've been lurking in the background for awhile doing some reserach and I came across the Projector People deal everyone is talking about. I have had an HS-20 for a couple of years, but am sick of replacing the lamps. I have about 2800 hours on the HS-20, and the "replace lamp" light just came on again. With lamp prices around $300, and the subpar black levels of the HS20, I am thinking of jumping to 720p DLP. I've heard great things about this projector, but am wondering if its worth taking the splash with this great deal, or bite the bullet and buy another lamp for the Sony...Any thoughts? How's the lamp life on the HD72? Also, will I have a problem mounting this from the ceiling? The Sony's lens is in the center, while the Optoma's is shifted to the right... I have a 110" BW Carada screen (which I know contributes to the subpar blacklevels of the Sony :), Comcast HD, HDA1 HD-DVD player, and XBOX 360. Yes all the toys... Thanks in advance!
shatten22 07-10-06, 05:09 PM i have a problem-
I was going to wait until I moved to buy a new projector, but this H72 deal is too crazy not to jump on. I can't ceiling mount this thing. I have an H30 already sitting on a shelf about five feet up from the floor projecting onto a screen ceiling mounted 14 ft away. I've read the offset is huge on the H72. Is there anyway I can table mount this beast without having to reposition the screen? thx
