fullmoon 10-20-06, 03:03 PM Just got the new Audio Advisor catalog in the mail today and it shows the new line of Athenas. They are not on their website yet or Athena's yet..
LS-500 similar to AS-F2
LS-100 silimar to AS-B2
LS-C100 similar to AS-C1
AS-P4100 similar to AS-P4000
These have full black finish.
I haven't seen these yet but could they be clones of the c-series from energy? Are the tower dimensions and descriptions similar to the c-300 and c-500.

No difference, one is shipped and sold by target, the other amazon, that's the price difference and yes they are excellent for an entry level system if you're looking for an alternative to HTIB speakers and sub no contest.
On further investigation the ones sold by amazon are black enclosures with black grills, the target sold ones are silver enclosures with black grills. only difference. I'm sure now, haha.
newone88 10-20-06, 10:07 PM Thanks. I thought so but I kept seeing the 2 from different vendors with different prices. Also, on Athena website, they only show the silver trim ones. So I thought maybe the black ones were a bit older.

No they are the same. For some reason the silver is usually a little higher in price, Not sure why I guess more people prefer it.
jackass124 10-21-06, 02:47 PM Hi!...just wondering about recommendations for surrounds for my Athena setup to make it 7.1...here's what i have so far:
Onkyo 503
Bic H-100 sub
2 F2's for fronts
1 C1 center
2 B1s for rears
so, was thinking maybe S.5's or a pair of Micra's for the surrounds??.....kinda thought of the S.5's cause they come with stands right???....was thinking of a smaller surround speaker due to my room layout and size....suggestions??....or would something like those cheap Polks from Fry's fit in OK?
Thanx,
J
primetimeguy 10-21-06, 02:59 PM I'd go with two more B1's if you can.

Personally I'd go for a pair off Point5s before I would Polk R15s, I've a/bd them side by side and much perfered the point5s plus they will be tembre matched with the rest and you can still find pairs frequently on Ebay for about the same price, give or take a few bucks. The point5s don't come with stands but they do come with wall mounts.
Unltmatly I would recommend another pair of B1s or B1.2s but if space, budget or wall mounting is an issue go with a pair of Point5s.
For my first home theatre speakers I am thinking of going with the Micras. The price seems right (Amazon) as I have no reference point for comparing speakers sonically I thought I'd start on the low-end. I need speaker stands for all except the center.
Do you all have any suggestions on where to get the stands and how much they should sell for? From what I've read the front speakers tweeters should be at ear level while sitting. The rear speakers should be 1-2 feet higher. I suspect adjustable stands for all speakers make the most sense?
I thought picking the HDTV was going to be tough. This wide array of speakers models and makers is very surprising. Without a doubt, picking the speakers is tougher for me than finding the TV.
jackass124 10-24-06, 04:05 AM hi...wondering if anyone uses a stand for their C1 center speaker??...I have the Optoma H27 and was thinking i probably need a stand or something to get the center speaker off the ground.....can you recommend something that works??...or are you projector-users mounting your center speaker instead of putting it on the ground??
Thanx,
J

You can get this Wood Technology center stand on ebay for under $37. The top plate is 16" x 8"

jackass124 10-24-06, 12:19 PM thanx for the Center channel stand info...also, is there any way of putting the R1 on stands??...if the R1s are gonna be my surrounds, then i would need stands that put them slightly above ear level of the listener when seated, right??

The R1's have a very wide dispersion. They can be placed higher (on the side walls, or to the rear corners of a room - or even the back wall - if you want) and are made to be wall mounted.
jackass124 10-24-06, 08:18 PM just wondering if anybody has used the Wood Technology center stands with their C1 center speakers....the top of it is slightly smaller than the C1 in terms of width and depth....is there any way to anchor the C1 to it??....or is that even necessary?
Thanx,
J
Jakeman02 10-24-06, 08:32 PM I wouldn't think it would be necessary unless there is a chance of it getting bumped. The C1 is heafty enough it isn't going anywhere unless you want it to, you could alway use a few strips of industral strength velcro strips from HD or Lowes if it makes you feel better but I don't think it would be necessary.
Pretty much all speaker stands that I've seen have a top plate which is smaller than the speaker that rest upon them. It wouldn't look right the other way around. You'll have an inch extra on each side and about 0.75" over the front and back. That's perfect. The C1 is 18lbs, it ain't going anywhere.
Like Jakeman said, you can always get velco strips if you feel the need. I use velcro squares in the corners of the top plate for my bookshelf stands with my B2's, they hold very well.
I need some help. Multi-part questions to follow so pay attention. :D
Recently purchased B1 fronts, C1 center, and P4000 sub. Moved some older Boston Acoustic subsats and mounted them in the rear. After watching a few movies I was very impressed with the new speakers but felt that the rears were a little lacking so I thought I might get another set of B1's for the back.
but
The only thing that really bothers me is when I try to listen to music the only way to get any bass is to leave the receiver in a surround sound mode. If I go to 2 channel sound the sub gets turned off and the B1's (set to small) sound VERY weak. Listening to music in surround (ProLogic) has been acceptable but not ideal.
After checking audioadvisor I notice that the F1's have gone on sale and while they are twice as much as the B1's I thought these might be a good solution to the lack of stereo bass and would allow me to move the current B1's to the rear. Altogether this upgrade is more than I had originally intended for the new system but I prefer to spend extra and be happy rather than always think what if...
Now realize that the room is about 20(w)x17 and the entertainment wall has a fireplace catty-corner to the left and about two feet away. To get the left F1 in to position will require that it be set on the hearth of our fireplace making it a foot higher than the right speaker. Also the sub will have to go directly behind the left speaker and turned parallel to the back wall in the corner and will have the port aimed behind the entertainment center or into the bricks of the fireplace.
Questions:
1. Will the F1.2's be a significant enough bass upgrade that I can listen to music without the subs assistance?
2.If not (or even if they are) is there a way to get the sub to chip in in stereo mode?
3.Will elevating the speaker / having the sub and speaker in such tight quarters be an issue?
Hope this makes sense and looking forward to some input.
Much thanks,
Tim

Answers (Hopefully)
1. Not sure about the F1.2's. I have the B2.2's and for listening to music at moderate levels there's enough bass. It won't shake... Anything... but it's good enough for music. Even if you got the F1.2's it sounds like....
2. Your receiver is lacking. I Hate to break it to you but if you're listening in pro logic it sounds like your receiver might be stuck in the stone age and lacking any Bass Management. This handy little feature will offload all bass under a certain frq to your sub. If your receiver is fairly current (has DD) there SHOULD be some form of bass management. If you have a menu that says speaker size Large or Small set them to small look for a crossover menu and try setting that to 100, hopefully this will solve your problem. If you don't have this feature... it would probably be a better idea to upgrade your receiver instead of the speakers.
3. I've got my FR and Sub in a little 1.5x1.5 area and i've had no real issues... mind you I haven't crawled around with my ear to the ground (because my wife would think i've totaly lost it) so I don't know if I have any Bass Nodes.... If all of this sounds geeky to you... it is.... time to do some research... a good place to start would be Audioholics... good luck...
BigJavy 10-25-06, 05:34 AM Arg, I can't decide. I'm buying my first REAL surround system and can't decide which route to go. Here are the options I have in mind:
FL FR: F2.2
C: B2.2 OR C1.2
RL RR: B2.2 OR R1.2
RC: B2.2 OR R1.2
Sub: P4000, P6000, or hold off and get another sub later - just let the F2.2's handle the bass for now. Prolly 90% Movies/Video Games (so immersion = important...) 10% music. Not sure what room it's going in yet.
I'm kinda leaning towards F2, B2x4, R2 and selling one of the B2's and holding off on a sub since the F2's and B2's have a little bass to 'em I think.
I can pretty much get any combination except for using F2's or F1's as rears... that's just a tad too $$ for me. Or... ugh... would it be better to go w/ F1's, B1's and a sub?
Thoughts? Thanks for the help!
Front: Go with the F2's
Centre: Go with the C1.2
RearL/R: Go with the R1.2
Rear Centre: Another R1.2 would really fill up the space. This was originally my first choice and one that Athena themselves though might be good (see post on page 41). I ended up having two extra B1s and an extra C1...I used the C1 (upright - though now that I think of it, I could have put it sideways like the front C1). Anyway, if you can't use the R1, I might suggest using a B1.2 or B2.2 for the rear centre.
clangro 10-25-06, 09:49 PM I've pretty much narrowed down my first 5.1 system to either 4 Athena B1.2 with an Athena C1 center or Velodyne CHT Front Row. Has anyone been able to compare them directly? How do they match up? Which is better for home theatre?
Is there a difference between Athena B1.2 and Athena B1? I'm wondering because I found a good deal on an Athena C1 but am afraid it won't match up.
BTW, sub is probably going to be a BIC H-100.
This is going in the carpeted living room of a 1 bedroom apartment that's about 950 sq ft. I'll either be going to the top floor or ground floor as to not scare the neighbors as much. This system will be used for TV and movies almost exclusively. Not that I don't value music sound quality, but I haven't bought a CD in years, to give you a hint of how little it matters.
The only difference between the .1 series and the .0 series iis colour. The .0's were more black than silver. Same tweeter...same specs...
nathanielmark01 10-27-06, 02:58 PM right now i have a system in progress, with the athena 6K sub, C1.2, 2 B.1.2 fronts. and 3 klipsch promedia computer speakers for surrounds. i almost bought 2 .5s on ebay for L/R surround last week and got outbid (they went for almost a hundred bux!!!)... anyway, i see the F1.2s are now 250 so i am thinking it is worth getting them and swapping the 1.2s out for L/R surround...
only problem is i just got a new toy and need to wait a couple months before i can get wife to agree to another big purchase....
anyone care to speculate on how long the 1.2s will be available?
Im afraid they will sell out in a month or so and am considering going through some of my old stuff to see what i can sell on ebay for funds... i can't imagine the price will go up but i wonder how long they will last...
eventually i need to upgrade the rear surround also, but that is last on my list
markley34 10-27-06, 07:06 PM In a 7.1 can I put 2 on the sides 7.5 ft high and get away with it and put 2 on the back wall 6 ft high? I know they recommend 6ft but I can't on one wall. It will be put in a 13X11 area of the basement open to the same dimension on the other side. I have a Pioneer 1016 with F2.2 in front and C1 in center.

Have you tried asking Athena what they think? My rear left and rights are quite high. They sound great! They might sound better if they were lower but due to the way that my room is configured in my condo I can't do it.
Brandonw27858 10-27-06, 10:45 PM I would say go for it, my rears are about 8 feet up the wall and my sides are at ear level about a foot away from my head. I have no complaints, especially after leveling all the speakers. I have point 5's all around with a c1 for center.
With the WS-100, should i stay with the WS-60 for the center or go with the AS-C1.2???
I feel like I have to make up for the tinny sounding ws-100 by going with the c1.2.
jackass124 10-28-06, 02:05 PM hi!...thanx for the advice on the speaker stands for my B1s!...they worked great! (Dayton from Partsexpress)......one other question....I have things hooked up in 5.1.....got the front speakers connected to the FRONT connections on the ONkYO receiver...and CENTER to center of course....do the B1s connect to SURROUNDs or REAR SURROUNDS for 5.1, or does it make any difference??....also, when watching movies is DOLBY D better than DOLBY EX or is PLxII or NEO 6 better???...kinda confused on the different listening options....which would give the better immersive experience for a 5.1 setup??
Thanx,
J
primetimeguy 10-28-06, 03:09 PM For 5.1 connect speakers to surrounds. If you add 2 more for 7.1 those would be the rear surrounds. Dolby Digital will pass the 5.1 signal through your system. Dolby EX will create the rear surround channel from a 5.1 source so it plays back similar to 7.1 using rear surrounds. PLIIx (Dolby) and Neo6 (DTS) are two formats that convert 2 channel signals to sound like 5.1.
Jakeman02 10-28-06, 04:19 PM PLxII or NEO 6 better???...kinda confused on the different listening options....which would give the better immersive experience for a 5.1 setup??
Thanx,

That's strictly preference, I use PLII for most everything, TV and Music, other prefer 2 channel for music all channel, etc etc etc. You'll have to decide for yourself, there is no right or wrong answer.
I just picked up three S.5's at a nice price. I am wondering one of these would work out as a center channel? It will be timbre matched with other Athena speakers, but do you think having a single mid-drive vs two like on the C.5 or C1 will be a problem?
Thanks

No problem at all if you don't mind using a bookshelf for a center just don't lay it on it's side be sure to keep it in it's normal vertical position.
FYI: Just went to Best Buy and the sales rep told me that the Athena WS line has been "deleted" from their computer inventory as of October 6. he doesn't know why. BB usually deletes items when they are discontinued.
But the website still has the speakers on backorder.
Merlin803 11-04-06, 09:39 AM Hey guy's, I am thinking of upgrading my mains from the B1's to the F1.2's.
Would a B1 be a better center than the C1? If so, would it be a bad thing to lay the B1 on it's side as the center?

No No No...
The C1 is a far better speaker than the B1 (more efficient, better frequency response etc)...and specially designed to be a centre channel. As for putting a B1 on it's side, you'll be sending out the very directional higher frequencies to only one side of your room (not a good idea!)
Merlin803 11-04-06, 01:51 PM No No No...

Thanks, that is the info that I was looking for!
Any opinions as to if the F1's will be a noticeable upgrade over the B1's? I will still be using my sub either way.
Perhaps the most noticeable improvement would be replacing the .5 surrounds with the B1's?
Merlin803 11-04-06, 02:39 PM I think that I answered one of my own questions, I moved the B1's to the rear and like the sound a lot.
I guess that I will be selling the two .5's and buying the F1's!

Actually many people would say quite the opposite. If you have the right location and setup many people have tried and prefer using the B1 as a center over the C1, as long as you keep the B1 veritical. If you would need to put it on its side then forget it and go with the C1, which happens to be the case for most people Both have identical frequency response. The C1 does have a smaller, narrower sweet spot, and that is the main reason people do not care for it too much. Of all of the speakers in the Audition line, the C1 is the one on the low end of performance. But that is not to say it is bad, just not quite up to snuff compared to the rest of the line.
Merlin803 11-04-06, 03:54 PM The wife won't go for the B1 vertically, so the C1 it is! Thanks
troublefan 11-06-06, 06:44 PM Now before I get laughed right out of here, there is a reason for the rather odd forthcoming questions: my wife loves the look of the Micra speakers and really doesn't want me to change them.
So...
I decided to try a WS60 as the center channel for the Micra setup that I have and am very pleased with the switch. The wife is ok with this one change. Now I have one Micra MC Center, and wonder:
1) if I can get another Micra center, would a pair of these speakers make for good/better front speakers, compared to my existing Micra sats? My Magic 8 ball says 'yes'.
2) then I can move my two existing front sats to the rear for 7.1. Wife continues to be happy and accomodating.
3) regardless, I'd like to try it, but where the heck can I get one gray on gray Micra center?
I know the WS15 would be the best match with the 60 for the front, but she's not as keen on that look as she is with the Micra. Can anyone point me in the direction of one of these centers for sale? Or tell me I'm off my rocker?
How are you going to position the Micra center when you use them as front speakers? Can they stand on end or will you position them horizontally?
troublefan 11-06-06, 10:44 PM Planned on using the integrated bracket, mounted on the wall vertically. I suppose that would bring up another topic: for such a configuration, would vert or horiz be better? My initial response would be vertical (in essence standing the Micra center on end), so as to keep with the look of the rest of the sats and having the drivers in the vertical position, which seems to be the preferred way. Of course, I'm just assuming that's the preferred way.... :)
jackass124 11-09-06, 03:40 PM just wondering...can someone recommend cheap speaker stands for the S.5 satellites?? (or will pretty much any ikea-style stands work OK??)...I was gonna get a pair to as my side surrounds...here's what i have already:
F2 fronts
B2 rears
Bic H100 sub
Onkyo 503 receiver
also, what height should the side surrounds be??...I don't really wanna muck up the drywall by mounting them...
Thanx,
J
trotterjr 11-10-06, 03:22 PM I just wanted to know your feedback on the F2.2 The B1.2 And the C1.2. I'm building a second ht in the livingroom for the wife. the room is 22x18 and it will be powered by Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi. I have heard great things about these speakers just wanted to know what everyone thought?
We hate them! ...no no no...This is an Athena area afterall....
They're nice speakers...buy them...break them in for about 100hrs...then see if you need to make adjustments...they'll be tight for at least the first 30 hours...

bchboy1206 11-14-06, 03:35 PM I have been lurking here for a while and been trying to decide what speakers I should get for my HK 435. I was confused between Athenas, Paradigm, Ascends etc... Well I decided to save some money and buy the Athenas F2.2s, C1.2 and B1.2s. From what I read here I should be more than happy with them. Thanks for all the info everyone has posted here and helping me toward an informed decision.
I will post a short review when I get them next week.
Thanks again.
Jim
Hey guys I have the b1-2 , but I have a problem , they are too big and wont fit on my entertaiment center, what do you think of laying them down? is that a good idea, I could put them on top of the enter. center but that is like 8 and 1/2 feet tall, so I really dont know what to do. please help..
thank you guys.
jvgillow 11-15-06, 12:31 AM llep64,
You won't damage the speakers or anything by using them in a horizontal position, but it will affect the sound quality a little bit. I have two AS-B1s in my bedroom that are sideways and it still works pretty well. I'd recommend putting the tweeter part toward the outside.
thanks jvgillow, so you think is ok? I can still return them , but I really love them.
fuzzatch 11-15-06, 01:44 PM Anyone hear the new LS line yet ? I really wanna see how these stack up against monitor audio RS6's.
I emailed API yesterday and here is the reply:
Hello Ryan,
Thanks for your interest in Athena.
The LS Series will not be sold through Best Buy. It will be available in a few weeks from Audio Advisor:
www.audioadvisor.com
I have attached a preliminary information sheet for your convenience.
Thanks for your question.
Sincerely,
Ben Burko | Product Brand Manager
I posted this in the Athena LS thread also, but thought it may be helpfull here as well.
I was checking AudioAdvisor and found F1.2 for $249/pair. Do you guys think the price will drop with the new LS series coming. Should I get this now or wait some more time ?
$249 for a pair of floorstanders sounds tempting.
I currently own Point5
Merlin803 11-15-06, 10:56 PM I picked up a pair of the F1.2's from them last week because I question how long their supply of these will last.
jvgillow 11-15-06, 11:35 PM I wish I had the $ to replace my B2 surrounds with F1s. But oh well. AA's price is good, I would not hold out for better.
The last time around, with the original Athena Audition series, some people scored F1s < $100 each but only because Best Buy was closing out on their physical inventory. Since sales now are all Internet-based (AFAIK), I don't think a similar discount will happen.
Hastley 11-21-06, 01:53 AM are the f1.2 far better than the b2.2 for the L/R fronts? or will the sound be similar for either of these used as fronts?
I was thinking f1.2 for front L/R and b2.2 for back L/R in a 5.1 setting. Let me know if this seems like it is good or what is better (i dont wnt to get f2.2 for financiel reasons).
Thanks

Yep, I was one of those lucky ones. I got my F1's due to closeout and 30% open box for less than $100/pr out the door. I use them daily and love them.
And I think the F1 is clearly better than the B2 as fronts. Factor in the price of speaker stands for the B2 and the total price is probably pretty close.
Hastley 11-21-06, 11:37 AM Hi do you mean its clearl ybetter sound quality with more bass or is it just better because its the same price and you can get a bigger looking speaker
fsanacore 11-21-06, 03:14 PM Good afternoon!
I've been lurking and researching for a while, and think I have constructed a decent "starter" setup. We are in the final stages of building a new house, and this setup will be in the family room. The room dimensions are 16' wide x 28' long (although furniture will be set up about 15 - 18 feet from screen) x 10' high. I have already bought the TV, a Panasonic TH-42PX60U that will be mounted over the fireplace. I have not yet purchased any audio components and am seriously considering a refurb w/ warranty Marantz SR4600, a pair of B1.2 bookshelf speakers for front L and R (spatial and wife-induced asthetic constraints), C1.2 center, and P6000 sub. The intended use of this system is primarily for music (60% - 75% of the time) with the rest probably split pretty evenly between movies and HD programming. No gaming. I am interested to know if (1) this is overkill for intended use (knowing how I enjoy my music I think it probably is not but am willing to consider that it is) and (2) if the proposed receiver and speaker combination is a good match. Thanks in advance for candidly sharing your expertise and experience!
Frank
Anyone looking to offload their Point 5's?
fsanacore,
I don't know if the difference is worth it to you but you can buy a brand new Marantz 4600 for only $30 over the refurb price. The extra $30 gets you two more years of manufacturers warranty. 3 years new, 1 year refurb.

Thanks for the advice; I'll definitely consider that but it would put me exactly at my $600 limit. We had the house prewired, so I don't have to worry about buying cables or anything, but I wanted to have a little wiggle room for anything unforseen. The piece I'm most on the fence about is going with the center with no rears (at least, not for the next 6 months or so) since a 3.1 system probably doesn't make much sense for mostly music use. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'd go for fronts and rears without a center, short term. You'll still get surround effects from the rears that way and in the receiver when you choose "no" for center speaker it will give you a phantom center effect.

Thanks; the rears will have to be in-ceiling and I'm not sure I'm really ready to go there. Because I am extremely new to this (surprise!) I would appreciate any additional insight on why you recommend ditching the center in favor of the rears for majority music use. I'm sure I have albums with rear "effects" but (maybe erroneously) thought that L and R front plus a center would give more "mass" (probably not the right word, maybe I mean "soundstage" but I'm not entirely certain I know what that means either) and a more "solid" wall of sound. As you can see, I am in need of education!

If your talking music in the terms of CDs and other 2 channel sources then there is no center channel or surround channels anayway so forget the speakers. If you are talking mutli-channel music and concert DVDs then you will have an actual center channel signal and surround signals. A lot of concert DVDs have the mix such that little sound comes from the center channel or even some have no center channel at all. I'd say it is a tough call between having a center or surrounds. If you front speakers are pretty close together than going without the center may be your best bet.

Okay, thank you!
So maybe I should just go with 2.1 for now in that room, and add the center and rears in a few months. Anybody have any thoughts on whether the SR4600 is a good match for the Athenas?
danman227460 11-23-06, 10:34 AM Ok I am looking at the AS-F1.2 to replace my JBL speakers. I have a Bose subwoofer, Two bose shelf speakers, JBL Center and Two JBL rear. Is the AS-F1.2 a good replacement choice?
curtis104 11-23-06, 01:23 PM Anyone know where I can purchase a pair of Athena AS-R1.2?
Hastley 11-23-06, 03:49 PM I have aquestion about the athena line.
What are the advantages of the F2.2 over the F1.2? Has anyone heard both of these speakers? I can get a pair of F1.2 for like 250 dollars. I can get a pair of F2.2 for about 100 dollars more.
What should i do?
Please note: At this point i do not have a subwoofer nor do i have the living space available for one.
jvgillow 11-23-06, 04:06 PM Please note: At this point i do not have a subwoofer nor do i have the living space available for one.
Based on that criterion, the F2.2 is a better choice. I have not heard that model but I have the F1s and they really should be paired with a subwoofer for music and especially for movies. The F2s provide better bass response due to the larger cabinet size and of course dual 8" woofers instead of the single.
Also consider that subwoofers don't necessarily need to take up much living space. There are plenty of small sealed designs that would nicely complement the main speakers if you decide buying one is an option.
Hastley 11-23-06, 06:43 PM Thanks for the reply.
I understand that the sub need not be large but i meant i cant have it rattling the cieling or walls because neighbors are very close by in apartment buildings.
Does your statement still hold in this situation? I dont care about getting a sub if it wont make the neighbors pissed at me. The upstairs neighbor reported me for having a ceiling fan that made alot of noise...
THank you

I would avoid the sub in that case. They don't usually work out well in apartment buildings unless the walls are thick or you have very tolerant neighbors.

I own both (well, the original F1's and F2's). The bass at most levels is similar, although I'd probably opt for the 2's for the bit of deeper reach and headroom for movies without a sub.
Are the F2.2 too much speaker? I'm currently trying to decide between the 1.2 or 2.2's. I guess I'm looking for a stronger speaker for my fronts than the B1.2's. However, if the 1.2 is only slightly better then maybe I should get the 2.2. I'm currently in an apartment and will be moving early next year into a house. Thanks
g1inger 11-25-06, 09:22 PM Can anyone suggest the optimal setting for the AS-P6000 sub's SCT with the S.5 sats? Also, should the receiver speaker settings be set to "large" or "small" with this setup and if "small" what's the appropriate crossover settings?
Thanks in advance.

I'll give you some guidelines, but without taking measurements in your room you won't know which gives the best response.
Turn the subwoofer crossover to max, set speakers to small in the receiver and set the receiver crossover somewhere between 80-120hz. The spec for those speakers says they are rated down to 80hz but I doubt the in-room performance is anywhere near that, they probably roll-off around 100hz. Setting the crossover to 120hz is probably the best from a response standpoint but you may be able to localize some of the bass from the sub. Setting the crossover to 80hz limits the localization but probably causes a dip in the freq response. So find a happy medium between 80-120 that you like best and go with it.
g1inger 11-26-06, 08:54 AM Thanks Primetimeguy,
I'll try to give you a better description of our room and setup dimensions:
The room is approximately 25' long x 20' wide. The S.5s are mounted approximately 15' apart on the walls in front of and behind our viewing area which is approximately 11-12' from the TV which is centered between the front S.5s. The sub currently sits beside the TV. The C.5 sits below the TV on one of the ledges of the stand.
Stupid question but what is the MAX position on the SCT...40Hz? That is where I have it now. Also, I've got the Bass control at approximately 6-7 and the receiver's sub volume at 0.
Thanks once again.
primetimeguy 11-26-06, 09:22 AM The SCT should be set to 120hz or higher, that would be max, so turn it as far in that direction as it goes. What you want to do is set this as high as it goes to essentially prevent it from having any affect on the system. Then adjust the receiver crossover between 80-120hz to your liking. I'd leave the volume at around 7 and make any further level adjustments using the sub level trim in the receiver.
g1inger 11-26-06, 10:03 AM Thanks for the help Primetimeguy. I'll try your suggestions and see how it sounds.

I'm getting the Micra 6s to go with the Panasonic xr57 7.1 receiver. So I'll use the Micra's for the center, front and surrounds...but what about the 2 speakers for the back? I haven't seen the satellites sold individually. Is there another option for getting to 7.1?

g1inger 11-28-06, 01:25 PM Great forum!
My setup:
Room size: 25' long by 20' deep
Speakers:
Athena Point 5 MKIIFS
4 S.5s
1 C.5
1 AS-P6000 sub set at 70Hz (suggested by Athena's product manager) Bass Volume is between 6 and 7.
Receiver:
JVC RX-E100SL Sub volume 0 Crossover at 80 Hz
TV and DVD Player:
Panasonic CT-34WX53 HD (1080i) CRT
SONY DVP-NS75H Up-converting player hooked up via HDMI to DCI Cable.
60% DVD movies, 20% HDTV, 20% Music
These speakers are an upgrade from the original JVC sub (8 inch 100W) and sats that came with the home theatre kit. All I can say is "what took me so long". These speakers sound great. The subs performance is awesome. My home theatre has now really come to life. They are sill in the "break in" mode and seem to sound better each passing day. Customer support from Athena has been great. The SCT on the back of the sub does not have a preset identified setting for the S.5 sats so I contacted Athena and they suggested 70Hz. So I moved it from 120Hz and I have to say they sound great. I'm a happy customer.

Unfortunately you cannot always rely on what the manufacturer says. Your speakers are only rated down to 80hz, and in room response at the listening position will not be that good. Setting your sub at 70hz I'd bet if you did some frequency sweeps you'd find you'd have a huge dip from 70-100hz. And beside that, with the receiver at 80hz, nothing is getting the 70-80hz portion of the signal at all, its just gone (but yes crossovers are slopes and not brick walls).
Do some searches around here about crossover settings and you will find many of them. Almost all, if not all, recommend a crossover at a very minimum of the 3db point of the speaker (80hz in your case) up to half an octave higher or more (120hz in yoiur case).
When all is said and done, go by what sounds best but keep all of the above in mind. You may actually be missing out on more than you know.
Finally have a somewhat matched setup!
Receiver: Onkyo TX-SR303R
Fronts: Athena AS-B2's
Center: Athena C.5
Rears: Athena S.5's
Subwoofer: Advent ASW1200
Sources: Creative X-Fi XtremeMusic Analogs, PS2 Optical
I bought most of it through an online auction site, total cost for the Athena speakers was under $150 including shipping. Pretty nice stuff for the price. These are mostly being used with my computer and PS2 as a source. I opted for the C.5 instead of the C1 because of space reasons, there is a center rack on my computer desk to be used for holding CD Jewel cases, and the C.5 fits this space perfectly. Using the Analog outs from my X-Fi sound card into the Receiver, with my PS2 being hooked up to Optical...
Probably using it for 75% gaming, 20% music, 5% movies. I am enjoying this setup a lot, though I am pondering upgrading the Advent subwoofer to an Athena, though I am not sure how much more difference it will make. I am a poor college kid you know :)
Folks,
I have been proud Athena owner for the last two years.
My configuration is weird because I got good prices on the F1's at BB.
Fronts: F2 x 2
Center: C1
Rears: F1 x 2 (don't think they are suitable for surround speakers)
Sub: P400
I'm about to finish my basement and planning to buy four R1's, one more C1 and one P6000 to build two sets of 5.1 configuration.
Question, I have searched on this thread and some said it's really easy to mount the R1's on the wall, does that mean I don't need more hardware, i.e. wall mount brackets? Thanks in advance.
Laughorgy 11-29-06, 04:20 PM grokus , there is a bracket on the back of the R1.2's which require a single screw, anchored in the wall for mounting .
Chizzap30 11-29-06, 04:26 PM I love my speakers from Athena right now.. but probably going to take the plunge to either Vienna Accoustics or Martin Logans later on...
I currently have
AS-F2's
AS-C1
AS-B1's
AS-R1's
AS-P400
They won't go anywhere yet... first thing is upgrading my power center to a Panamax and then upgrading my AV Receiver to a Denon 4806CI

I don't know but this completely ruins my plans :( I was days away from ordering the F2.2's and a C1.2
AS-C1 center is available on ebay shipped for $60. Lots of them too.
AS-F2 is another story. People charge $50 ea for shipping, so that makes them close to $500
Just spoke with Tim at Audioadvisor.com.
He said they still carry Athena but the new website hasn't been updated yet. Stock is low though. In fact they're out of F2.2 and he's not sure if they'll get more back in.
Roughly 30 F1.2's available at $249/pr
Only a handful or less of the C1.2 available
B1.2 all gone right now, but may get more in. It's been a hot seller.
They do carry the new Athena LS line. The tower speaker is $499/pr. I haven't seen a picture because they're not on the Athena site but someone may have posted pictures on here earlier.
Tim said to go ahead and post his direct toll free number at AA. Its 1-866-984-0676.
So call him if you want any remaining Athena Audition speakers.

Yesterday, I got one AS-C1 on ebay at buy it now price $80 shipped but I watched another C1 got bought at $61 shipped. So you can take it a little slow if you want to grab one of those.
I also bought two AS-R1.2 from bestpriceaudiovideo.com for $198/pr shipped. I searched everywhere but only two websites on pricegrabber quoted slightly lower prices.
Thanks Laughorgy. I almost bought two pairs of cheap mount brackets from monoprice last night for my AS-R1.2's.

legolas13 12-01-06, 10:53 PM You should use a 80hz xover unless your sub rolls off the bass below that. THX recommends this for 2 reasons...1. bass begins to become localized as it climbs above that
frequency 2. Voices also begin to dip into the 90hz and above freq. Remember that in a HT/Music setup each speaker/component plays its part. A great way to check the frequency xover blend is by using the THX optimizer on any of your DVDs with THX on them. This optimizer is usually found in the special features or language menus. There is a "video" and "audio" optimizer. After checking the polarization of your speakers there is a test for xover frequency. It works great if you have a friend help you with your settings. One of you operate the AV rec'r and the other the controls and cables on your Sub.;)

Yes, 80hz is a good starting point, but if your speakers cannot produce that frequency well then you may better off with a higher crossover. Only freq response measurements in your room can tell you that.
As for the THX optimizers, do a few searches around here and you will find they are next to no good for both audio and video, they even vary from disc to disc. What you need are frequency sweeps and a way to measure them.

Hi All -
I have been reading your posts here regarding the AS-F2.2 and the availability at Audioadvisor.com and thought I would let you know that they look to be in stock as I just purchased off their website. Atleast they "appear" to be in stock. I will be calling Tim (who you mentioned in your post) to check on my order. I just stumbled onto this thread as I was getting help from some others as I was asking about both receivers and speakers.
Could any of you let me know if the AS-C1 is still available at the $60.00 price that was mentioned earlier in the thread? I have been looking on Ebay, but have not been successful in finding a "new" AS-C1 for a decent price.
Also - Should I be going with the AS-C1.2 Center since I am getting the F2.2's or is the C1 more than adequate?
Thanks in advance.

If you search "athena as-c1" on ebay now, you can see about five of them.
On page 43, N'Yeti said "The only difference between the .1 series and the .0 series iis colour. The .0's were more black than silver. Same tweeter...same specs...".
jplayland 12-03-06, 05:16 PM I just ordered the following system:
Center - AS-C1
Front - 2x AS-C1
Surround Side - 2x AS-B1
Surround Rear - 2x AS-B1
Subwoofer - BIC H100
Receiver - Yamaha RX-V659
I am planning on using wall mounts to mount all but the center channel. How much room do the rear ports need for optimal operation? What wall mounts would you recommend to hold up these heafty speakers?
Let me know what you think of these:

Thanks for the info. However, after reading the string, I think they were talking about the B series, not the C1.1 vs. the C1.2. I read on-line that there were upgrades from the C1 to the C1.2 so you can imagine that I am a little confused.
That said I am concerned that going with the C1 as the center to the F2.2 fronts, it will not be able to keep up. I have read in the early stages of this thread that some are also concerned the that C1 is not powerful enough to be used with the F2.2. I am thinking I should go with the C1.2 for the center, but (obviously) I would like to save some $$$ by purchasing the C1 for $60.00 - 80.00, instead of the C1.2 at $150.00.
Thanks again.

The B1, B2, C1, F1, F2 and those with .2 are from the same series. Think of it as F (floorstanding) C (Center) B (bookshelf). However they are all from the audition series. the .2 updated version of these are the same speakers, same specks/size/etc. The only difference is the original series used thicker MDF for the cabinets making them heavier and some say better, also the driver color changed from black to silver, otherwise same speakers. You can mix the original series with the .2 as you can with most Athena speakers, they are made to be matched with each other, all except the micra (satellite system) and maybe the new L line, I'm not sure about those.

I am going to go with the C1 as it looks as if I can get it for around $60.00. If I find it to be a problem, I can always upgrade to the C1.2. For the small amount of $$$ it is certainly worth it.
Can you help me with one more issue - As I mentioned to you in another forum, I have the (EeeeK!!) Bose Acoustimass 6 and would prefer to use the existing 2 cubes for the back as they are ceiling mounted and it also could save from having to purchase any further items. My wife is starting to give me the LOOK!! I know everyone knows what LOOK I am talking about (Actually she has been terrific). So...What are yout thoughts regarding the Bose for the 4th & 5th speaker???
Jakeman02 12-03-06, 08:58 PM Thanks again!!!
For rear speakers they may be ok, that's up to you to decide. Try them for a while if you have to. Personally I woudn't, but that's me. If you find you do want to upgrade, a good cheap alternative would be a pair of Athena Point5s. They are discontinued now but you can frequently find them in pairs on ebay for < $50. They are smaller bookshelvs than the audition series but will match (same tweeter) although they have a different grill configuration as far as looks but that woudln't matter in a front vs rear anyway and the bose don't match eather. They also come with their own mounts, if you go that route make sure the seller is including them.

FL FR: F2.2
C: B2.2 OR C1.2
RL RR: B2.2 OR R1.2
RC: B2.2 OR R1.2
Front: Go with the F2's
Centre: Go with the C1.2
RearL/R: Go with the R1.2
Rear Centre: Another R1.2 would really fill up the space. This was originally my first choice and one that Athena themselves though might be good (see post on page 41). I ended up having two extra B1s and an extra C1...I used the C1 (upright - though now that I think of it, I could have put it sideways like the front C1). Anyway, if you can't use the R1, I might suggest using a B1.2 or B2.2 for the rear centre.
N'Yeti suggested the F2 - why would you go with F2's over F2.2s? Or are they the same speaker? I'm seriously considering the following setup to replace my Onkyo HTIB speakers:
FS1.2 x2 (also considering the FS2.2 for $100 more - worth the investment?)
C1.2
R1.2 x2
P6000 Sub
Sounds like a fairly standard, easy setup - no? Would you change anything to go with a Denon 2307CI?
Home Theater Joe 12-04-06, 09:36 PM Hi All -
I have been reading your posts here regarding the AS-F2.2 and the availability at Audioadvisor.com and thought I would let you know that they look to be in stock as I just purchased off their website. Atleast they "appear" to be in stock. I will be calling Tim (who you mentioned in your post) to check on my order. I just stumbled onto this thread as I was getting help from some others as I was asking about both receivers and speakers.
Thanks in advance.
I am unhappily telling you that the F2.2's I purchased off of their website are indeed on back order. The price is terrific ($399.00) for the pair. However, if I can't get them by Christmas it could be an issue for me. Does anyone know of any location where I can purchase for close to the $399.00 price icluding the shipping costs??
Tim at www.audioadvisor.com tells me that he does not know when they will get more Athena F2.2's in. He tells me that the website is not keeping up to date, so if you are looking to purchase from their site, I suggest calling to ensure what you want to order will be available.
I noticed that some people are using B1's instead of R1's as surround. Could someone explain what's the benefit?
Considering,
1. R1's bi-polar design
2. easier to mount on the wall (just two screws, maybe with anchors)
Is it price, or B1's can potentially be used as fronts in the future, or something else I'm missing?
Thanks in advance.
primetimeguy 12-04-06, 10:58 PM It is mainly preference if you like bi-polar surrounds or not. I prefer not and use B1s for surrounds.

I ordered the C1.2 from them the other day and haven't received a shipping notice. So, I guess its probably on back order as well. I think I will call and find out tomorrow. I hate places that charge your credit card before shipping. As it seems to always take forever to get the refund.
Home Theater Joe 12-04-06, 11:36 PM Hey Tacos - If you find that your center channel is on back order also, you might want to check on Ebay for the C1. I purchased this for $66.00 including shipping. I am told by several others that that is not much diff between the C1 and the C1.2. Well worth going with when you consider the price discrepancy between the two.

Some good news regarding shipment of the F2.2's I ordered. I talked with Audioadvisor.com today and they will be shipping out this week. They are getting their stock in in the next day or two.
I hope you have as much luck with your order!!
armstrg3 12-07-06, 11:59 AM I have a pair of S3's from the SCT series, would the As-C1.2 center speaker be a good match?
Hey guys, I'm looking at upgrading my speakers and are currently looking at an athena set. These are available from a local 'big box store' up here in Toronto and they sound amazing. They're sold in a set. Here's a quick write up from their site;
The Athena Point 5MKIIFS is a premium music and home theater solution for your home. The system performs powerfully for both music or home theatre. The system features 4 identical S.5 satellites, a matching C.5 center channel, and a powerful 800 Watt 12" powered woofer. All components are timber matched.
This set is being sold for $900 Canadian.
In your opinions, is $900 a fair price for what i'm getting and could i get more value by looking elsewhere.... I'd rather try to purchase from a local retailer instead of online, but if the price difference is overwhelming then you know how it goes!
I've attached a picture of the exact set.

I've got 2 sets of the point5 system, the sub wasn't included with the system in the US. IMO they are great speakers for the size and budget. They sold for $200 US for the 5 speaker set before they were discontinued. That looks like the AS-P6000 sub they are including with it and it's probably in the $300 range here. Dont' know what the equals as far as Canadian and IMO their are better options in the price range for a sub but the speakers are excellent. Might want to see if you can cut a deal on just the speakers and get something like the Bic H-100 sub from ebay for around $200.
jwalker678 12-07-06, 09:41 PM Planning to wall mount a 50" plasma and, at least initially going with a 3.1 set up. Was thinking of (3) ws-60s that I would mount on the wall with the plasma, HSU STF-2 sub, panasonic xr55s receiver and companion dvd player which totals around $1,000 and the upper end of my budget. The room is 16x18 and 14 ceiling. what do you think?
Mathew J 12-07-06, 09:51 PM So what is the deal is the Audition series discontinued or something?
I currently have a pair of AS B1s and a C1 center, with some mix and match speaker sets for the rears in a 7.1 setup, I was thinking of getting a pair of the F2s for the fronts and then R1s for the rears and using the B1s for the surrounds but wonder now if it is worth it or should I simply get a set of R1s and stop there or get the F2s, move the B1s to the back....also how much of a difference is there between the F1s and the F2s?....or just continue on as planned..thanks

Just finished basic installation of the Athena set last week. I purchased it several months ago when I saw them at a substantial discount online that I couldn't pass up. They are a perfect match for my Pioneer 516... Not only do you get the 5 solid speakers with five way binding posts , you get a remarkable 12 inch Bash amplifier sub and a pair of heavy metal stands. I still have to fine tune the sound levels and finalize the sub and surround placements but out of the box you'll have an honest to goodness impressive home theatre that will rival systems costing substantially more. In my opinion you can't go wrong with the Athena Point 5 system. As far as the price it's hard to say as on one hand they are a discontinued line and should be discounted but on the other hand they are such good value that their "cult" status might demand a premium for the reamining systems.
ShamHollingera 12-08-06, 01:01 AM Hi Troll!!!
I purchased the system you are looking at here in Oakville about a month and a half ago!
I'm pretty darn sure you are looking at it where I got it (big box store that is not called Past Shop...)
Anyhoo, I thought it was a pretty good price FOR canada. You could get it cheaper in the us, ordered from a website, but then you gotta get it across the border which can be a major pain.
Here's what I did: I bought it for $900 cdn. A week later I was looking at it online again and it was $200 off!!!!!!!! So went back with my receipt and was credited the $200 plus the tax!!!!
I also got a good deal on 2 B2.2s at the same store and have them set up as a 7.1 system.
I'm MORE than happy with the whole set up. Everyone I show the system to is simply blown away.
Any questions at all, PM me, I can't guarantee I'll be following this thread closely.
Maybe you could go in and talk to a manager and say "i know it was on sale, could you cut me a break?" Worth a shot!
Sham
Hi Troll,
Geez I wish had bought mine a month or so ago too Sham! I doubt they would honour the price that long ago. I just bought this set of speakers from the same store. They do have a price protection guarantee which will carry you through the holidays. I too hope to see them drop in price during this time period. As far as my opinion of the speakers...I love them. The sound is fabulous. I have a JVC receiver and cannot turn it up past 25 (out of 70) during a movie as the sound and bass from the sub just shake my house something silly....no distortion at all. I did a lot of research before I bought these Athenas and am very happy with the results so far. Go grab this set! By the way...Athena will advise you to set the SCT on the sub at 70Hz to match the sats...but another forum member suggested 120Hz as the roll-off of the sats is around 100Hz. I've got the receiver set to small speakers and the crossover at 80Hz. Sounds just great. Oh and the volume of the sub is at 6 1/2. My room size is 20 x 25 by the way with the sats wall mounted in front and back and the center under my tv ( a Pana 34WX53 HD CRT ) on one of ledges of the stand.

I've ordered 3 times from them 2 C1s and a AS-P400 sub. I received each order within 2 working days and one of them the next day. Send them an email, they also have a contact number by phone on their auctions if I'm not mistaken.
I bought a pair for Point 5 satellites from the guy earlier this year. Took about a week to get to California from Georgia. No problems at all, speakers were in perfect condition in original packaging and included mounting brackets.
I'd buy from him again if I needed more Athenas.
ninjitsui1 12-08-06, 08:09 PM You guys are killing me! (Or should I say, my wallet) After reading countless and countless hours of threads here, I final was able to satisfy my uncertainties with your great feedback and comments. (Thanks guys!) I finally pulled the trigger on my Athena set. I just wish I had more restraint as I bought the entire system all at once! HT itchy finger strikes again..
I'd just like your opinions on tips/advice/things I should look out for.
This is what's being sent to me over the next week:
(Shipped prices)
Onkyo Receiver 674 ($550)
1 x Athena C1.2 (119)
4 x B1.2 (113/pr)
1 x PS-4000 (200)
Room:
16 x 18 with two doors, and sliding glass door in rear. Carpeted.
Couch facing the length of room
Question:
1. Anything I should have bought instead of what I got? I'm always curious to hear what the latest and greatest is, but looking within those prices to be more specific.
2. I'm thinking of putting the 4000 directly behind the couch, about 4 feet of space between the couch and rear glass window. Bad spot? Or should I put in rear corner. I would really like to get the sub away from the front due to neighbors bedroom being closer to that end of the room, and the lack of space.
3. The onkyo 674 is 7.1. I have a set of vintage 3 way floorstand speakers, fairly heavy duty with a 8" woofer, a 5" woofer and 3'' tweeter with 50-200 khz FR. Because I only have enough $$ for 5.1 Athena set, do you think it would be ok to use these floorstanders for my fronts/surrounds/...rears?? It'll only be temporary as I'll eventually upgrade to F1.2's...I can't itch it just yet..lest I give no one a christmas present. =) Or will 5.1 suffice for now?
4. Last question...for now. =) Anyone know of any wall mounts suitable for the b1.2's? To my understanding, they need at least 3'' of space behind the cabinet for the rear port. I'm looking into buying/making speaker stands but floorspace starts becoming non-existent in the back if I have 2 pairs of stands back there.
Once again, I greatly appreciate any feedback, you guys are awesome! And I can't wait to setup my HT and let you guys know how it sounds!

Hastley - I heard form the seller today regarding the order I placed on the 2nd where he shipped me the wrong speaker (B2 instead of the C1 center channel) and he is shipping out the correct speaker on Monday. UPS will be picking up the Bookshelf speaker at his shipping cost...obviously. It took him a couple days to get back to me, but all looks to be well. Hope you receive yours soon!!

Mathew J, You can get the .2 series of Audtion speakers from some retailers... same thing... just a little different look. audioadvisor carries the athena's. But I would recomend using the as-r1's as the surround left and right and using the b1's as the surround backs... if you go to THX's website that's how they reccommend doing it.
And from one of my earlier posts.. I've changed my mind from the AVR-4806CI to the Pioneer Elite VSX-84TXSi and the Elite DV-79AVi.... I'm wanting to run SACD and DVDA through firewire.

APorter 12-11-06, 11:31 AM I buying my father-in-law speakers and receiver to go with his first HDTV he just purchased. I already have the Pioneer VSX-516 and now just need to get speakers. I originally was thinking of getting a pair of B1.2 and using the Pioneer's Digital Virtual Surround as he does not have room for a 5.1 set-up. Since I can't find the B1.2, the other speakers I was looking at were the Infinity Primus 150's. My question for you guys is would the C1.2 center be okay for now using Digital Virtual Surround?
nathanielmark01 12-13-06, 09:42 PM I think i have been hit by an Athena curse... first i ordered the F1.2s to complete my athena 5.1 setup (C1.2 and 2 B1.2s) and only 1 was shipped. Then after moving my sub it seems that something shorted out.. its the AS-P6000. I can only hear it if i turn up the subwoofer to +12 on my receiver, turn receiver volume way up and turn sub knob up to 10, and even then it is pretty quiet.. ordinarily, with receiver set for sub at 0 and moderate volume, i can't turn the sub volume up past 3 without rattling my whole house. (its a small townhouse)... in any case, i am pretty dismayed at the prospect of going without a sub for some period of time... especially since i just got my HD-DVD player.. but it is less than a year old and should be under warranty.
does anyone have experience with athenas warranty service? is turnaround quick and relatively hassle-free? i wish i could just open it up and replace a fuse or something, it is responsive to volume change on the receiver but seems to have lost 90% power... woofer is clearly intact... i wish i could just take it somewhere for a quick repair.

I have C1, F1 and B2's at home. I had the B2's first and replaced them with the F1. Definite improvement in sound quality, especially with music. I think AA has the F1.2 for $249/pr. What will the B2's cost you? And also factor in the cost of speakers stands. If the total is within $50 of the F1.2, I'd get the floorstanders for sure.
The F1.2 is 35" tall while the B2.2 is 15". They're about the same depth, within 1/2" of each other. So if you get a 20" speaker stand for the B2 it'll take up just a much space as the F1.2

The B2 + stands will be close to F1.2(250$ on ebay new or audio advisor) so I will go to F1.2. The only question is, if there is a huge diff between F1.2 and F2.2
if there is a huge diff between F1.2 and F2.2
That I can't answer, I only heard the F1 vs F2 at a Best Buy a few years ago. It was in an open area where you really couldn't do a good comparison.
You might call the folks at Audio Advisor though, they should know. Or even Athena.
I thought you were worried about the F1.2 being too big? The F2.2 is another 6" taller and 5" deeper than the F1.2. I would guess that would definitely be too big if you were worried about the F1.2
jvgillow 12-14-06, 08:03 PM kitron,
I posted this pic in the thread a while back, it shows some AS-B2.2s stacked on top of AS-F1 speakers so you can quickly see the size comparison. (There's also some AS-B1s and an AS-P400 in the photo).

Nahh. The F2 will have a higher dynamic ceiling, but in a 5.1 system you'd probably hit the limits of the center first. At levels below extreme, they're quite similar. With no sub, the F2 would be well worth it.

jvgillow 12-15-06, 01:35 PM BIC Acoustech H100 is almost always one of the recommended choices in that price range for a subwoofer. I'm actually thinking about getting one to replace my AS-P400 sub that's currently being used for a computer 2.1 setup.

ninjitsui1 12-18-06, 02:07 PM Sorry, newbie post. Are the B1.2's wall mountable as rear surrounds? And if so, what mounts are you guys using?
Thanks in advance!
Jason
Ps. My PS-4000 is coming today to finish my 7.1! :)
1.2's are vented at the back...so you can mount near a wall but might have interesting developments if you back them onto a wall.
OpFor713 12-20-06, 07:55 PM I currently own:
AS-F2.2 Mains
AS-C1.2 Centre
AS-B2.2 Surrounds
AS-P6000 Subwoofer
Yamaha HTR 5890 Receiver
Mains are set to large with the remainder set to small, and an 80 Hz crossover.
While I love this setup for home theatre, I find music to be a different story. My problem is that there is a definite hole in the midbass region that my f2.2's should be able to handle with ease. I'm not sure if midbass is the correct term, but an example of what I'm referring to would be your typical bass guitar frequency range. It just isn't there. Even setting "bass" to +6 dB via the receiver's tone control does nothing. I did think it might have been a problem with my speakers initially, but a low frequency sweep of 250-35 Hz proved that the F2.2's can in fact play in that range. I really am at a loss for what the issue could be, and I really do love my Athena's, I just really feel like something is definitely wrong here. When I disconnect my sub and route all bass to the fronts, the setup sounds fine for movies, but for music, what I qualify as "midbass" simple isn't there. If I didn't know better there's no way I would be able to tell that the music is being played on speakers with 2 eight inch woofers a piece. I'm pretty sure the problem has something to do with my setup, and not any of the equipment itself, but I have no idea what it could be. Thoughts?
ninjitsui1 12-20-06, 08:06 PM 1.2's are vented at the back...so you can mount near a wall but might have interesting developments if you back them onto a wall.
Yeah, I've heard that you want at least 3'' of space between the port and the wall.
I'm curious as to how to attach the mount to the speaker...will I have to drill holes into the B1.2's?? I definitely would not want to do that, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help?
Could I use these?

Thanks guys!

At this point is your crossover still set to 80hz? And by "disconnecting my sub" do you mean unplugged or actually set to "NONE" in the setup?
For a quick music test turn sub to "NONE", center to "NONE" and Surrounds to "NONE" and have your fronts to "LARGE". There should be no crossover point then. Don't use any of the DSP modes and tell us how it sounds when you play music.

I'm curious as to how to attach the mount to the speaker...will I have to drill holes into the B1.2's?? I definitely would not want to do that, but I can't seem to figure it out. Any help?
Could I use these?

OpFor713 12-21-06, 12:07 AM At this point is your crossover still set to 80hz? And by "disconnecting my sub" do you mean unplugged or actually set to "NONE" in the setup?

My mistake, by "disconnect" I meant set to "none" is the setup and physically unplugged from the system just for good measure.
I tried out what you suggested, setting the centre, sub and surrounds to "none" via setup and fronts to "large", and no matter what style of music I tried, it all sounded thin. The best way I can describe it is it just had no weight behind it. I want to say it sounded like very small satellites, but this isn't true. there is in fact bass present, but the volume and energy is completely disproportionate to the mids and highs to the point where it's barely audible.
Could it be the receiver? (I really don't know what about the receiver it could be, I'm really reaching here)
Any owners of F2.2s care to weigh in with their opinions and results with these speakers and music?
So, who is upgrading their Athena's over the holidays? I am still looking for 2 S.5's.
I don't have F2's, I have F1's and they sound great to me. Mine is paired with a HK receiver. I used to have a 2000 Yamaha receiver and didn't like it at all because it was overly bright and the Athenas tend to be bright too. But I've read the Yamahas don't sound that way anymore since the last 2-3 years. Its a more neutra/warmer sounding receiver now.
Maybe you could use an external amp? The reviews say they sound really good with a lot of power.

nathanielmark01 12-27-06, 07:39 PM I just wanted to drop a warning in for anyone considering an Athena sub... I ran into a problem with my PS6000, which is still under warranty and I am having a really bad time getting it fixed...
I currently have:
F1.2 L/R
C1.2 C
B1.2 SL/SR
R1.2 RS
in a 6.1
so i am hardly an athena-hater
I had the P6000 for a few months when it suddenly lost better than 95% power. It is still under warranty, but I had a very difficult time getting one of their contracted service centers to take it. Apparently, they are moving their official service HQ because they were acquired by Klipsch... Today, I got a call from their contractor (Simply Speakers in Pinellas, FL) saying that there is nothing wrong with the sub and I should check my receiver and sub cable. They were sending it back to me at my expense. After the call, I tested a different sub with the receiver and cable and it worked fine. Somewhat perplexed, i did some digging on avsforum and found this thread showing that some others had the same exact problem with the sub.
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=715440
I am callling Simply Speakers back tommorow, but it is very likely the sub was already shipped at my expense.. if i am lucky, maybe it is a self-correcting problem, but the fact i called athena and articulated the issue clearly to a manager named "Dan", and they did not give me any input on it, does not speak well of the company, IMO..... I am wondering if they are going downhill now because of the merger..
obviously, there is not a whole lot that generally goes wrong with speakers if you treat them correctly, but amps are a different matter entirely.
my advice: until the Klipsch transition is in place and Athena can demonstrate they will still stand behind their products, Do not buy Athena Subwoofers.... i really regret not getting the H-100, though that may be in my near future.
This is bad news because I have some Energy and Athena speakers. Both were acquired by Klipsch along with Mirage speakers too.
I've had excellent customer service when I needed it from Energy a few years back. I'd expect the same when the Klipsch transition is completed.
Don't screw this up Klipsch people.
nathanielmark01 12-28-06, 04:53 PM I did find a contact at API who seems genuinely concerned about the perceived lack of service due to the transition... it seems that my issues will be taken care of at the very least, but i really had to do a bit more work than i should have... they are in transition, but they do seem to be very sensitive to how they are viewed on this forum, so i would definitely mention AVS for any warranty issues... having said that, i would still advise avoiding their subs at least until the transition is over... i dont see much risk with speakers though...
Management 12-29-06, 11:48 AM Can someone comment on the WS line. I am looking to upgrade from my Point 5 system to:
Center: WS 60
Mains: WS 100
Surrounds: AS-R1
Surr. Back: WS 15 (Do stands exist of these?)
How does this sound?
BTW PM me for cheap price on Point 5 complete system including stands. Looking to get rid of?

Athena Mircra 6 System
Harman Kardon AVR235
Combination sounds great! The most surprising piece of the system is the sub. The sats are also excellent but the sub is what made me pull the trigger.
I originally bought this system when I lived in an apartment but have moved into a house with a 15 x 20 family room. The system still sounds great but now I literally have lots of room for improvement. I am now researching/auditioning a new receiver, some floorstanders, and center channel right now. I am definitely going to retain my current system for my game room/den.

I agree with the sub comment. I've heard many say that's the weak link of the Micras, but for an 8" sub it's quite adept. Athena has a good line of speakers for the "Athena upgrader".
Management:
For my 12 x 12 room, I kept the Micra sats and replaced the Micra center with the WS-60. It was an incredible improvement, a much fuller/wider front soundstage, but the only experience I've had with the WS line. I'm thinking of getting a couple WS-15s for the front sats and move the 2 front Micras to the rear for 7.1.
Anyone compare the Micra sats to the WS-15s? Think this would be a positive, negative , or wash?

IMO I can't imagine a pair of WS-15s showing any drastic improvements when compared to a micra 6 sat, though i have not auditioned them against each other. i can imagine the improvement the WS-60 can have over a Micra CS.
chaos8517 12-29-06, 07:07 PM Has anyone tried/heard the LS series of speakers yet? Looks like they're showing up in certain areas.
nathanielmark01 12-29-06, 07:54 PM i got my sub back and it still doesnt work properly. i have to crank it up to 7 out of 10 and increase the sub gain on the receiver to hear it.... and then the bass doesnt seem as clean... i am seriously POd... will be calling and emailing my contact at API and see what they do... i did test it on a different RCA and powerline... going to test it on a different receiver too, but i just dont see that being the problem.
I would seriously avoid buying anything Athena that contains an amp.. the speakers are fine.
Management 12-30-06, 11:21 AM Quick Question:
I know some people say to use the Crossover on the receiver and turn the Crossover (Low Pass Filter) on the SUB all the way up. I plan on upgrading to the WS series and I wanted to see if the crossover on the sub (AS-P4000) would be better because it says to set it to 70 on the dial. I can't use 70 on the receiver, I can only use 60 or 80. Can I turn the receiver all the way up and turn the sub to 70. That should be the samething right?

What that would do is to send everything below 120 Hz (assuming all the way up in your receiver is 120) to the sub and cut the speakers off at 120. Your sub being cutoff at 70 would ignore everything above 70 leaving you with a hole between 70 and 120.
That is why people defeat the crossover in the sub and use the receiver for bass management.
In your case, turn the sub cutoff to 120 (essentially defeating it) and try the receiver at 80 (or 60). The recommended setting of 70 is for proper blending with your speakers and since it is not a hard cutoff (it kind of rolls over) it should still sound good at 80. Try it and let us know.
Management 12-30-06, 11:55 AM That really makes a lot of sense. That is what I am currently doing now with my Point 5. The requency response of the WS 100 start at 50 Hz so I think I will set it at 60 Hz at the receiver. The center WS 60 has a frequency response starting at 60 Hz so that should be ok.
Another question, I want to use AS-R1s as my surrounds but my room forces me to put them higher than ear level. Do I have to put them at ear level. What wiggle room do I have with this option? If teh surrounds are really high what will that do to my sound stage?
Thanx for the help.

Keep in minded the spec for the frequency response is often much lower than real world listening at your listening position. For instance, I have the AS-F2, rated down to 35hz, and they need an 80hz crossover in my room. The AS-C1 and As-B1 need 100-120hz in my room. If you don't have a way to measure the in-room reponse I would not set it anything lower than 80hz.

I would skip the WS line and go with the AS line
I started with a kenwood HTIB system upgraded to a pioneer VSX-816 with the micra 6 system it sounded better but not what I hoped for after reading reviews.
So I added the WS-100 for the fronts some improvement but not much
So I then added AS-B2s front and a AS-C1 center and put the WS-100s in rear huge difference
I think I will get AS-F2s for front put B2s as sides and the WS-100 in rear for 7.1 and hope for an even huger improvement I'll post if I add the F2s

To me the WS-100s was just a small step up from the micra 6 sats. I was not impressed at all especially at the price of the WS-100s
I think the AS-B2s blow the WS-100s away

imo it's a step down as far as performance for the price. If space, looks or matching a plasma/lcd TV is priority then then the WS series is probably the best way to go at the price, but you do give up up performance due to design.
The best upgrade from the point5 system is the Audition Series. You'll be happier with the overall sound quality and they are cheaper, which is always a plus.
Or the LS series has just came out, I haven't read any user reviews on them though and pices will be higher than a coparable sized AS...Audition Series.
Genuflect 01-02-07, 10:51 PM I'm thinking about assembling a home theater system to accompany my new HDTV, and I was wondering how the HK3380 receiver would sound with a pair of WS-100s. I'm not interested in surround sound, so I'm just going to go for a pair of nice floorstanding speakers (the WS-100s), an Infinity 8" sub and leave it at that. Would that receiver be powerful enough to drive those speakers? If not, I would be willing to go the next step up to the HK3480.
Either of the receivers will be plenty powerful for your stereo needs.
Is there a reason why you picked the thin floorstanders like the WS-100? If you want better sound you should go with the F1.2 floorstanders instead.

I'm on a bit of a budget, and I found a pair of the WS-100s for about $350, new. I'm still going to do some more research before I make my final decision and place the order, but right now the 100s look like they would fit my needs just fine. Plus, I really like the compact aesthetics of the 100s. I don't want anything exceedingly bulky sitting next to my TV. Plus, my living room isn't all that large, so I don't want them to be the center of attention.
The compact aesthetics makes sense, but the budget part doesn't. The F1.2 floorstander is only $249 a pair.

If it was just $250, that would be great, but they tack on an extra $100 for $S&H, so I'd be getting them for around the same price as the 100s.
Genuflect 01-05-07, 10:10 PM After much deliberation, I decided on the AS-F2.2s. Cost me a bit more, but I demo'd these locally, and they blew me away.

Surrounding my Pioneer 5070 in my basement HT I installed 3 WS-60's (L,C,R) all wall mounted and two WS-15 rear surrounds and AS-P4000 sub. I couldn't be be happier with the sound and aesthetics.
Genuflect 01-07-07, 06:17 AM Did you demo the WS-100 also, if so what did you think of them?
They sounded rather tiny and muffled, although I thought that they were quite appealing, visually. They had the speakers in a rather large demo room though, and I think that the sheer size of the room wasn't conducive to the overall performance of the speakers. I could imagine them sounding good-to-great in a small bedroom or dorm, but not in a moderate-to-large size living/family room. Also, the bass on the speakers was virtually non-existent. Athena's PR makes it sound like the speakers can deliver as much bass response as their Audition line, but that's really stretching the truth a bit far. Even with the bass pushed way up on the EQ on one of the receivers I tried it on, it started to show quit a bit of fatigue and just an overall muddy low-end; nothing with nearly enough "umph".
The Auditions, on the other hand, had some jaw-dropping low-end and some fantastic mids and highs. The soundstage was just much more colorful and prominent - unlike the 100s, which sounded like everything was WAY off in the distance.
Genuflect 01-07-07, 06:20 AM Also, I just finished wall-mounting my TV tonight, so I've made more than enough room for the 2.2s. Before I had my TV on a rather large stand that was angled in the corner, and I was fretting over how I was going to fit the speakers on each side of the stand without them being pressed up against each adjacent wall. Now I have more than enough room for the 2.2s.
ImRonMexico 01-07-07, 11:13 AM My friend actually has recently become an authorized dealer of Athena's and he swears by them. He has convinced me to buy Athena's but which ones? Now my issue is, which Athena system? Here are my choices! please help! all are within my budget, but I'm not sure the difference in quality! This will mostly be used for video games, and hd cable, and a few weekly movies.

JordanIB 01-08-07, 10:09 AM So after a lot of lurking and trying to read as many threads similar to my situation and budget, I feel like I want to pull the trigger on starting to build my system. I will probably go 2.1 for now, and then add later. I'll probably get the BIC H100 for now.
It seems like I'm choosing from a handful of very similar and highly-recommended options: Athena B1.2, Primus 150, Advent H200, Paradigm Atom, ARXP62, and a couple of others.
I am very unlikely to have the time to go out and really audition all of these, so I feel compelled to buy something having not heard it. I can get a pair of new B1.2's for just under $100 shipped, and given the strong reviews, and considering making that my final decision. Later if I decide to get more "impressive" fronts, I can move these to the rear.
As someone who has listened to audio my entire life through the speakers on the TV, I feel like any puchase I make I will be more than please with.
So should I just take the plunge and go for the B1.2's for $100?
So confused as a noob...although I guess everyone second and third-guessed their first purchase.
chaos8517 01-08-07, 10:47 AM less than $100 shipped is a very good price for the B1.2's - and they are very good speakers, i don't think you will be disappointed.
Athena has just released a new line, so that deal probably won't be around long - and as such, finding speakers to match down the line might be difficult. Not sure if this is a concern for you or not.

Aside from a center, is it required that I match anything to these? Or would it be bad to get different brand front and rears when I eventually add? And I suppose I could add the new Athena's and have a pair of the old and a pair of the new working together.
Genuflect 01-10-07, 01:20 AM The last home-theater setup I had was an entry level, Sony HTIB that I bought on a whim from Best Buy AGES ago. I finally disposed of it a few years ago, and have been without a stereo/surround setup for about a year or so. I decided to kick things back into gear again after purchasing the following components:
Onkyo TX-8211 Stereo Receiver (I'm still not 'sold' on the whole surround sound experience, and I'm primarily a music enthusiast/nut, so 5.1/7.1 isn't really for me)
Athena AS-F2.2 Tower Speakers
Kensington Stereo Dock for my iPod
Yes, I didn't include a sub, but deep, authoritative bass really isn't something that I look for in my music. I usually try and emphasize treble OVER bass (not excessively, though) in order to accentuate every little nuance, rather than have my walls reverberate and swell from guttural lows. As far as movies go, I pretty much am of the same mind. The setup is going to be used about 70% for music and 30% for movies. I'm a pretty big movie buff, but I'm not a big proponent of action flicks that benefit from big, booming lows. Most of my DVD library consists of classic foreign films (Bergman, Herzog, Cocteau, Fellini, etc.) and classic "golden age" hollywood flicks. A sub really wouldn't enhance my viewing experience.

Sounds like you did just fine. Given your taste in movies, I wouldn't think a sub or surround would do much for you. For music, the F2's bass is more than sufficient for all but organs (even then, the 32Hz stop is pretty weighty over them). Very efficient, also, so lack of power/dynamics won't be an issue.

Keep in mind speaker specs can be very misleading. I have a pair of F2's in a very large room and the bass really drops off below 60hz even though they are rated down to 30ish. I have mine crossed over at 80hz with the sub. All depends on your room but you may well benefit from a sub even given your tastes. You can pick up an Athena AS-P400 pretty cheap on Ebay which is a very good, musical sub for the money. No one said bass has too be boomy and rattle the walls, you just need to blend the levels correctly.

Quite a drop-off, Stereophile's anechoic measurements show them pretty strong down to 30Hz or so, which the reviewer seems to subjectively confirm.

I'm not doubting the anechoic results with near-field measurements, but who has a room that behaves like that? In most rooms you will not see performance like that at the listening position.
Jack Gilvey 01-10-07, 03:50 PM True, you usually get at least a little gain on the bottom end. My experience mirrors the reviewer's as to the 30-40Hz performance. Rooms will cause differences but they won't change with speakers, so better bass will still be better bass. If a speaker that's anechoically flat to the mid 30's drops off below 60Hz in a room, it sounds like a problem.

But put the same speakers in a different size room and you'll get different output. My room is 55X18X8 with an opening to a hallway as well. So I agree my room is larger than most and probably more a special case. Again, I'm talking freq response at the listening position, which for me is about 11ft from the speakers. If I take measurements 1ft from the speaker I get great response down to around 40hz.

Strange, in a space that large your room should more closely resemble the anechoic response than in a smaller one. Anyway, my point is that a speaker with better anechoic bass extension will still be better in-room, as the room will effect them the same way. And they do meet their specs pretty well by standard measurements.

I guess I disagree in that in-room response would always be better...maybe or maybe not, depends on the room. And yes they do meet their specs (or close to it) which in the link above were done measuring at 50" away. My point is that in a room the reponse will more than likely be different at 11ft away than at 50" due to room interactions. May get room gain or you main not.
Now if you're comparing two different speakers with different extensions then I would agree that that the relative differences between the two seen in the anechoic chamber would probably show up as the same differences in-room.
And don't get me wrong I love my F2's and think they are great.

Yeah, that's what I mean...sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant the better speaker will be the better speaker, not that in-room FR would necessarily be better.
And don't get me wrong I love my F2's and think they are great.
My HT room was getting cramped, so I moved mine out into an analog stereo ("2.0" for all the kiddies) system fronted by a Rega Planar2 and NAD 314 integrated. Sweet...

thompson12 01-13-07, 08:59 PM Hi all I read a lot of posts here saying that the athena speakers are very bright I think mine lack in the brightness area is there any way to make them sound any brighter
Maybe adjusting the acoustic EQ manually? if so what settings would I adjust to get more highs and would I turn them up or down I am using the Pioneer VSX-816 for HT and music. I did the auto MCACC setup and then readjusted the output levels with my radio shack digital sound level meter
my speakers are athena
AS-B2 front
AS-C1 Center
WS-100 rear
M225 sub
My older pioneer has a built in EQ with slide knobs and my Harman Kardon has bass and treble knobs witch make adjusting them easy with full range speakers
3matthew3 01-16-07, 04:06 PM Currently I have my HT in a dedicated room (about 13 x 15).
Use a Viewsonic DLP Projector with a DIY 7ft [16:9] wide screen.
Just upgraded my reciever [from a JVC DD 5.1, piece of JUNK] to an Onkyo 503 [7.1] very happy with the reciever for $150 refurb. [really clean sound]
Now I am purchasing speakers to replace my mix-matched ones I am using now [2 full range Pioneer cheapies for Front / cheap Bose 1001 for Center / 2 DCM Timeframe 400s for Rear]
I just purchased 2 Athena Audition AS-F1.2 for Fronts (249 + 57 shipping for pair]
Also an Athena Audition AS-C1.2 for Center [149 + fee shipping]
total of $457 shipped
So what should I do as Rears? AS-B1.2 or AS-R1.2 ? Or just keep using my DCM Timeframes? AS-R1.2 look about 250$ a pair... any better prices out there?
My couch is about 1 foot from back wall ... [right now I just have the DCMs angled in slightly behind the couch]
My main purpose is movie watching/HDTV/Xbox 360
I do have a Boston Acoustics powered sub to use also.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
ALSO does the price I paid seem OK for the Fronts/Center? [457$ shipped] bought from AudioAdvisor
Is anyone using the AS-F1.2s with the AS-C1.2 ? Are ya happy with it?

I have the orignal F1 with the C1 center and am quite happy with it.
If you look on Amazon, another vendor sells the R1.2 for $77.90
JordanIB 01-16-07, 04:44 PM I'm almost embarrassed to ask, but humor this noob:
I just got in my B1.2's and need to get appropriate height stands. I understand that the tweeter should be at ear level. Now for the dumb part....which one is the tweeter? The top or bottom thingy?
The tweeter on your speaker is the small one on top. Its provides the high frequencies.
First time poster, several month lurker. This is a great place to get my Athena fix. Thank-you.
I have been enjoying my pair of B1.2's for almost a year now and I must say they are a fabulous little speaker. I have been fortunate to acquire a pair of F2.2's for $150. The problem is the tweeter cap? It is pushed in. This doesn't seem to affect the sound in anyway though I can't say for sure as I have never listened to them otherwise.
My question(s) to the group:
a) Is it possible to fix the dented in tweeter cap? How?
b) Will the sound be negatively affected if fixed?
c) Are the tweeters in the B1.2 and F2.2 the same? If so, can I swap them?
d) How much is a replacement tweeter?
Thanks
Bob

It should work fine in your F2.2. You'll need to take the tweeter off the curved plate and install it on the proper plate in your F2.2 but otherwise it should do the trick.
And its $20 cheaper than ordering a replacement.

I don't think the dent is really doing anything, try reversing the speakers and see if you can tell. If you're going to replace it anyway, you might try using a vacuum to pull out the dent on the soft dome. Of course, you could trash the tweeter, so only do it if you think you want to replace it anyway...
Thanks for the replies fellas.
I actually called Athena (duh!) and spoke with someone about my questions.
Turns out that the tweeters are in fact different (power handling) so he recommended not to swicth them up. He said that a dent in the dust cap COULD cause sonic degradation but that one could use either a piece of tape, or a small pin, to bring the cap back to form without any ill effects.
So, that's what I did and all appears well.
On another note: Has anyone successfully modded their Athenas? Maybe damping the cabs with No Rez or Blackhole 5. Or playing with the X'over?
Jack Gilvey 01-17-07, 10:57 AM Good news on the fix.
Not sure I'd mess with the crossover, but added bracing might have some effect as that's the one negative that stood out in the Stereophile review, some resonances.
3matthew3 01-17-07, 04:13 PM Been anxoiusly waiting since I ordered my new Athenas on Sunday [F1.2s, C1.2] from AudioAdvisor...
Been checking their website for status and it finally said Shipped yesterday... well, I came home from work to find a FedEX door tag stuck to my front door! Didn't expect them to arrive to damn quickly... kinda bummed now... will have to wait until tomorrow for them to get delivered again!
Well, one quick question... I'd read many reviews that state about the "break-in" period... [something like 100hrs] Is it better to just hook them up and go.... or hook them up and play something [like a CD on repeat] constantly for a few long intervals, before I go about my HT watching?
If I should play something for a long period of time, any suggestions on what type of CD and what volume?
Thanks much,
Matthew
3matthew3 01-17-07, 05:11 PM After searching thru the forums, I found a so-called "pissing contest" regarding the truth / myth of break-in periods and speakers.
If anybody has any thoughts specifically towards the Athena speakers... please reply... [personal experience about break-in period]
Just after reading through that other thread, I'm not looking to start a pissing contest here...
Thanks...

yelloguy 01-17-07, 06:21 PM I have read some of the debates on break-in. I don't form any opinion based on these debates. But on my Point 5 system, I did notice that the sound got better after a few hours of playing. I did not specifically break them in with any spacial sound or music but just kept an eye (ear?) on the sound during the first 100-200 hours of usage. And as I said, I felt the speakers opened up a bit.
FWIW, I felt the same way on my Grado headphones and my custom car (Polk) speakers. Some say its the fact that you get used to the sound and it starts to sound sweeter.
I need help in finding the mounts for S.5, I am using them as rears.
Also it will be great if you can suggest mount for c1 (heavy speaker)

Not sure what kinda setup you have display wise, but if you have a projection setup... this is great for the C1, just ordered mine for the C1.2 .
Not really a mount, but rather a center stand... pretty reasonable too... could probably use under a wall mounted Plasma/LCD also.
Search "wood technology center" on EBAY... can find one for about 50 [including shipping] seems pretty great for use in a front projection setup. comes in three different heights also.
Thanks to whomever posted a link to these stands many pages ago in this thread... exactly suited the bill for me...

Anyone here ever try stacking their Athenas?
As mentioned previously, I have just acquired a pair of F2.2's to go along with a pair of B1.2's. To conserve real estate space I stack (with tip toes) the B1.2's on top of the F2.2's. I get a monolithic viewing perspective, which is kinda neat, and somewhat intimidating at the same time. For the heck of it I listened to the B1.2's at this height and actually loved how the image and soundstage was much taller and expansive at this heaoight than when down at 24" or so. As a result I'm wondering what things would sound like if I hooked both stacked pairs of speakers up together and had a listen to them. I know they are disimilar speakers from a physical perspective but (seemingly voiced similarly) so I figure what the heck. I'll make sure I listen at low enough levels so as not to blow the B1.2's. My amp is plenty sturdy enough to handle the lower impedance dip.
I may give this a shot later on. While I am at it I may also face the B1.2's backwards, in sort of a bipolar arrangement, and give it an experimental listen too.
jvgillow 01-18-07, 11:32 PM Let us know your findings, bmu. Most of the time it is not recommended to run two sets of L/R speakers (or two center channels), but sometimes it can yield interesting results. There will be phase interactions that can cause certain frequency ranges to be accentuated and others to be attenuated.
Ignore
Sorry I am having to get up to 5 post cound in order to post a link in my response post.

Hi, Jeremy.
Well I stayed up last night listening and the results were interesting to say the least.
I have posted images of my monolithic Athena setup at photobucket if anyone is interested in how the look is: Not very high on WAF but oh well :)
http://s129.photobucket.com/albums/p202/itsbmu/
I used a old Yamaha A760 int amp to test. This amp has A, B and A+B speaker connections which allowed me to compare each speaker on it's own and together.
As background.
Immediately I was impressed with the F2.2's improvement over the B1.2'.s all the way around but especially in the lower registers and in SPL level. As good as the B1.2's perform the F2.2's just blow them away. But this was expected.
I did however gain an appreciation for just how good the 1.2's are on their own. The way they image and present an open and expansive soundstage is very impressive. This I knew and it's what drew me to them in the first place. Better yet, as mentioned earlier, by getting the 1.2's on top of the 2.2's I was able to get an even larger soundstage out of the 1.2's, much higher image than previous and much more open. Rather than getting "squashed" performers at about 3 feet I now had performers at 6 feet. It was much more like a live venue and quite addicting to be honest. Problem being I had to stand up somewhat to realize this effect and couldn't get it all while sitting down in my regular chair.
On their own the F2.2's simply blew away the 1.2's. Obviously they play much louder. They don't compress as the 1.2's do on dynamic passages. They mids are a little more forward it seemed and the high's a tad more refined and analytical (some might say brighter). They image well but, expectantly, not to the degree that the 1.2's do. The 2.2.s's do give you more lower level info that otherwise you'd be missing with just the 1.2's.
So, how did it sound when I hit the "A+B" switch? Quite good in fact. Switching from the B swicth position (the 2.2 reference) the sound got noticeably louder and played deeper. Thge mid bass got much fatter, too fat actually and sounded somewhat bloated. The deep bass wasn't affceted any. The mids and high's sounded the same as before, just louder, or maybe more pronounced is the correct terminology. Most importantly, everything still sounded cohesive. Oh, and that immense, and tall soundstage, was still there, even when I was sitting down now. This was quite cool as I love to sit when listening.
I never bothered facing the 1.2's backwards in a bipolar arrangement but I'll continue to play around with speaker placement and such for the next little while to gauge this setup.
ChrisMilne 01-19-07, 01:29 PM Anyone notice that athena's website is dead?
what do you mean dead? I can get to each speaker line except the new LS series. Probably hasn't been updated yet.
fuzzatch 01-19-07, 03:30 PM Anyone notice that athena's website is dead?
I think that they may have changed the address when they updated the site somewhat. Here it is: http://www.athenaspeakers.com/v2/
jvgillow 01-19-07, 05:01 PM The B1.2 stacked atop the F2.2 actually looks better than I was picturing in my head :)
I think having the spacers in-between helped, although if you were planning to leave it like that for any extended period of time I would put something in there that had vibration-resistant qualities instead of the plastic cones.
I'm planning to eventually upgrade my rear B2.2s to F1.2s to match the front three speakers that I have; the $250 deal for a pair of F1s wasn't going on when I bought the bookshelves otherwise I would have paid the extra amount at that time instead. Still, the B2.2s are great speakers as well so getting the motivation to try to sell, ship, and order different speakers is not really there yet. My friend might be building a theater soon so maybe I can offload them at that point in time ;)

Only $499 CDN/pair sounds pretty good.
speco2003 01-19-07, 11:36 PM Hi here are some real quick and dirty SMAART looks at my B1s today I did this with a Rat Shack Meter mic as I did not have my regular measurement mic with me.
One pic with just the orange trace is the B1. You will notice the lo driver falls out of phase with his. It lasts for 180 hrz which equals about 5.5 MS of offset.
Then in the next pic is a trace of the Rat Shck Mic in Purple that was measured from a Meyer HD1 speaker using a DPA 4006 as the reference mic which is razor flat. So you can see the peaks and dips of the rat shack and compare that to the B1 measurement to help know what we are dealing with.
I will measure my B1s with the DPA late tonite and post as well.
I really like the B1s and use them in our movie room. I have a pair of the Meyer HD1s that I use for our everyday music and TV viewing.
This is just a bit of info for everybody so there will be more to come.
delfmen 01-20-07, 11:21 AM Hey guys,
I read just about all 50 pages of this thread and wanted to run this by you Athena owners. I have heard good things about Athena and this thread confirms everything that I have heard. My system will be using for approximately 80% music and 20% movie.
Initially I was thinking about startimng off with a pair of AS-F2.2s and a BIC H-100 sub. Will this work well for heavy music usage?
And then sometime in the near future I thought I would get some R2.2s and a center channel to complete my surround sound.
The only thing I really am confused about is a receiver. Soooo many are mentioned in this 50 page thread that I don't really know where to begin. If anyone could advise on that it would be very much appreciated.
Thanks a lot for the help!
jvgillow 01-20-07, 11:36 AM Athena speakers are easy to drive, especially the F2.2 model, so you don't need a particularly beefy receiver to get good results with them. I would recommend choosing a receiver model that fits your budget, has all of the audio/video inputs that you require (and at least one extra for expansion), has a good feature set, and isn't too confusing to setup. Most of the $300 and up models are now including some type of automatic setup that can help a lot with that last piece. For best results I would also look for a model that offers automatic equalization for each speaker. Also watch out for things like s-video/component video upconversion, or if you want HDMI pay careful attention to whether the receiver just offers video switching or if it can also utilize the audio stream sent via HDMI.
Oh yeah, don't get a Sony or Insignia receiver.

I just recently upgraded my reciever and speakers... bought the F1.2s and a C1.2 [for now] will buy R1.2s in the very near future. [using my existing Boston Acoustics CR400 Sub and Viewsonic DLP Projector]
My setup usage is an equal mix of Stereo Music listening / Movie Watching / HDTV / Xbox 360 game playing.
Bought my receiver over christmas, bought an Onkyo TX-SR503 ... [same as the TX-SR504 model, except the 504 is XM-ready and has an Ipod dock, I beleive].
The Onkyo has NO HDMI, but three component HD inputs and one output. [main reason I upgraded... recently added an Xbox360 to my projector setup and now have 3 HD sources... most under $500 receivers seem to only have 2 inputs] Also has 4 optical inputs and a slew of other anlog inputs... [pretty adjustable for any setup, on a budget]
First Onkyo product I've owned and am super pleased with the sound/build quality... only rated @ 75watts, but blows the JVC 110 watt, that I replaced it with away! It is also a 7.1 receiver, which is nice if you plan to go that route, but also has a very clean Direct Stereo and 5 Channel Stereo mode... the Onkyo can be had for about 150$ refurb and about 200$ - 225$ new... kinda a hard deal to beat, unless you NEED the HDMI. The Onkyo has a REAL "clean" sound for music...
Very happy with my Athenas so far, just got them all wired up last night... played them for many hours yesterday and am getting used to their "sound"... have to get used to how "accurate" they sound... Played some remastered David Bowie, with the lights dimmed and the speakers just seem to dissappear... could hear alot of detail that did not exist in my old speaker setup. Played a few DVDs and the soundfield was awesome... Just getting a little used to TV watching... some TV shows don't sound very good, but I think it's the flaws in the source audio coming thru... [the Athenas sound so clean, that a less than perfect source, sounds pretty flawed] Not a bad thing... all the HD TV shows sound wonderful!
Very happy with my recent upgrades, on my budget... spent about [450 on the speakers, shipped] and [150 for the refurbed Onkyo product] sounds like it could've been a 1500$ upgrade!
Like, I said, this was my first Onkyo product, have owned JVC , Pioneer, Sony-ES, and a few others... Like the Onkyo best... [mind you, I'm on a budget and have not really tried out Denon, HK, and some of the more expensive stuff... I'm more of a "quality/features vs. price kinda guy", and this Onkyo is great.

azmodien 01-23-07, 08:27 AM Just picked up a pair of LS-500s. Here are my quick first impressions:
The cabinets are slightly ugly with a rounded shape kind of like Jamo floorstanders. Nice overall build quality similar to Energy with a black faux-woodgrain finish. As for the sonic performance, they sound fantastic right out of the box.
The highs are incredibly clean with no harshness at all. They sound very similar to my Energy Connoisseurs and maybe even better. The highest frequencies have a very slight brightness which is understandable since they haven't been broken in. Overall a very rich, full sound with very smooth midbass.
During initial use, I noticed that the low bass response was not as good as I had expected. I haven't really experimented with the placement very much, but the bass performance is lacking when running the speakers in full range, 2-channel mode without a sub. I don't know if this changes at all after break-in, but at the moment, I need my sub to fill out the bottom end.
I only had about an hour today to test them out but I will give them a more in-depth listening session this week. I can say this though, they are mindblowing for the price point.
You don't mention a budget for your receiver.
I have read and heard great things about Outlaw Audio (http://www.outlawaudio.com/). Apparently they make some very interesting, and apparently well sounding, receivers. I believe Stereophile raved about one of their receivers recently.
You might also wish to consider some of the NAD and Rotel lineup. They usually are excellent bang for the bucks products and tend to produce quite well on the audio side of things, if 2 channel is going to be such a priority for you to start off with.
Hey guys,
I read just about all 50 pages of this thread and wanted to run this by you Athena owners.
Just picked up a pair of LS-500s.
Thanks for the review.
Interesting that you compare the 500's favourably with the Energy Connoisseurs. I used to own these speakers and they sounded excellent. Must be all the NRC research that went into the design that is paying off
As for the seemingly limited bass, IIRC, the 500's use two 6.5" woofers which, according to Athena, gives them a deeper bass response than the 2.2's, which use dual 8" woofers. I know bass is a subjective thing but my 2.2's go quite low in my setup. I wonder if something is amuck with your setup? The 500's are rear ported designs correct? Have you tried placing them closer to the back wall and seeing what, if any, result this gives you.
I look forward to hearing further updates. It'll be interesting to read how the sound changes, if they do, as they break-in.

I've just picked up a pair from Amazon as well. I agree with your impression on the speakers on the slight brightness on the high, and a bit loose on low end. Similar to you, I've owned them for about 30 minutes, but they sound pretty good out of the box. I used to own AS-F2.2, and I like the mid and high of the LS-500 better.
Hoping one of you might know...
I bought a used Micra 6 setup to start my theater out. One of the sats is totally messed up. No sound comes out at all. I took a good one and the bad one apart to compare with the meter. The back posts on the good one reads 8 ohms, while the posts on the blown one show no resistance. The terminals on the drivers themselves on the good one each read around 3.9 ohms, the bad ones read nothing.
I assume both the midrange and the tweeter is blown? The crossover doesn't look so good, either.
Does anyone know where I can get this guy serviced, and whether or not it's even worth it?
Does anyone know where I can buy ONE of the Micra satellites? I know someone will chime in and say buy a pair of bigger Athenas and swap out the front pair, but I'm broke, I have a really small room, and the wifey is not pleased.
I emailed Athena service but haven't heard back in 4 days.
Any advice would sure be appreciated...
5 year warranty on your speakers, instead of emailing, just call them. I've used Energy speaker warranty support and they were outstanding. Sister company to Athena and the head office is at the same location.
