I am attaching them with 18 guage nails, 2 inches long, one in each corner and one in the center of the top and bottom for the larger frames that "bow"
Thanks for the info! Just to clarify, are you building the fabric frame and then nailing onto the wall, or are you nailing the frame on the wall and then putting the fabric on?

You forgot to ask "where are the pictures?"
I was trying to be sneaky, and have you just show me a picture instead. :D

I think some people toyed around with a french cleat idea, but there was concern about rattles. I mentally debated french cleat plus integrity gasket. The velcro is probably better.

Velcro is good, but you have to make sure that the thickness of the velcro does not throw off the flush look from the front using many panels. Also, that stuff can get costly....

lol - I am busy at work RIGHT NOW making the last of the frames. I have 36 installed and plan on installing about 10 more tomorrow - at least.

It's 10:50 now, I still have some more frames to make and then I have to watch a movie and then I'll take some pictures....

I know I owe you guys big time....

Gary,

I know you're hard at work on your theater, spending time with your family, or earning a living. Don't let these guys pressure you. We know you'll post pictures when you can. I understand completely, having been in your shoes. So, one question.... Where are the damn pictures? :D Sorry, couldn't resist.

Bud

I took off tomorrow for my son's FIRST first first day of school, and while he is there my wife has offered to help me wrap the rest of the frames and install them. I will DEFINATELY have pictures for everyone by tomorrow.

Sounds like there's an awful anxious mob waiting for these pictures. Hopefully it won't decend into a full on riot like the rock concerts that get cancelled after everyone is liquored up and sitting in their seats waiting for the curtains to open......

Hello all!!

Thanks for your patience with the pictures...lol.

I had a break in the day so here are some pictures for you!

I wanted to show how I was handling the frames around the columns as this looked very difficult.

For the tops I used this tool:
http://blaze.gotdns.com/gk/basement/theater_sept/theater_sept06M.JPG

Then I drew the line it created on the frame and cut it out with a jig saw.

Robert, I'll get you the name of the tool - not sure what it is called.

I never got the 16 frames covered yesterday, got too tired and sidetracked. I should be able to get them done by the end of the week.

I'll then only have 13 more to do.

Bar area to tackle next!

Gary,

Those frames are top-notch. I also like your "tool" to copy the trim. My Dad had one of those when I was growing up and I never knew what it did until I was a teenager.

Very handy, especially in older homes.

Building your own amazing home theater...thousands of dollars
Installing a box on teh ceiling for a hot wire you never got aound to...couple of dollars
Having a home theater that mesmorizes the inspector and affords you some building leeway....Priceless!!

Ive heard of bribes using money but never home theater reviews...too funny.

Congrats on passing the inspection thats great.

Update: I hung most of the finished frames tonight. Only 5 more finished ones to hand in the morning. Trying to find out if I should put duct liner linacustic on the back wall too.

I have 11 more frames to go and about 240 inches of material. It's going to be a close call as most of the 11 are large frames for the top.

Pictures coming soon....

Fantastic work. I'm still just in awe of some of the HT dedicated rooms done by guys on this forum. Your HT is definitely in the upper class along side some of the other phenomenal rooms that have been built and shown lately. The level of detail and workmanship is staggering.
Looking forward to seeing more.

Gary,

Your first post in the thread describes your equipment and I think you have a 7.1 audio system. If so, where are the back surrounds in your HT? I don't see columns in the back for them.

Thanks,

garykagan
09-25-06, 03:05 PM
I put surrounds to the left and right of the front row and also to the left and right of the back row of seats all hidden in the columns

I do not know if this is the best way to do it for sound.

As for the sound, I really don't know if it is good or bad. I think it is good, but not knowing any better who knows?

I do think it would be better if the back row got more of the surround sound. I don't know if this is possible. Is there a way to have all four surrounds working on a DVD that outputs 5.1? That would make it much better.

The HSU sub is cool...

Got the frames done for the hidden rack door tonight. It should come out pretty good. Only 3 more frames to go and then I will plan out the proscenium frabric install.

BTW, I have 68 inches of fabric left and I need 67 inches to finish the last 3 frames. If anyone is interested in the last inch, let me know. That's either the luckiest measurement or I don't know what.

Anyone have some good pictures of behind a bar wood installs? I am trying to figure out the best options for the walls. I would like something in a cherry wood. Paneling?

Duct work has been redone in the furnace room, threw out all the flex duct and replaced with metal duct. Added deflectors to get more air into the ducts also. Big difference.

The bar area is all framed out ready for paneling.

Got the bar in the basement.

IR system installed, needs adjusting.

Stage area fabric mounting design is done and will be started soon.

The flex is great for sound issues as per many on this forum. That is why I did it. It didn't collapse, it just restricts the air flow as compared to metal ducts.

If I did it again, I would use all metal duct to increase the air flow out the registers, there is a difference. I would figure out a different way to dampen the sound issues with metal duct if necessary.

I also put deflectors in the runs for the theater so that more air enters the ductwork.

I also plan to install two 36 inch fans for air circulation and possibly even install a new fan in the furnace to handle the extra 1000 SQ ft basement.

thanks for the comments!

Thanks for the comments!

My father-in-law (the electricitian) said I should go with metal boxes for the lights. I used the octogon shaped deep boxes with the metal strip to nail directly into a vertical beam. The strips on the metal boxes allowed me to mount them with the metal box 1" away from the the studs (pain to do, but possible) so that I could do 1" of material around for the frames. They are not adjustable, but if you mount them so they will be past the sheetrock by 1" (I assume you are doing this) it will work.

Had opening night last night with my parents and their friends. Lucky Number Slevin was on. Great movie. I kicked them out quickly thereafter so that we could try the Xbox 360 my friend Shawn brought over. Very nice system....

Popcorn machine overheated the clock switch I plugged it in, but it reseted itself eventually. Overall a very good first opening night.

Gary,

You used a GRX-IRI to control your GE right? Any words of wisdom on how to wire this thing? How does the GRX-IRI connect to the GE? I looked at the spec sheet for the IRI, but it doesn't show where it hooks to the GE. Is it just those 4 terminals on the back of the GE?

Sorry for all the questions. If you have a picture that would be great.

BTW - what type of wire did you use to connect them up? Is it just 18g?

Thanks...

Hello - sorry for the late reply. I used MUX wire obtained from Dennis E. Not expensive stuff, but recomended.

As for the wiring, as I recall, it is just wired to the back side of the GE to the IRI. I will see if I can find a diagram, there may be one in the GE thread sticky.

New project will start soon!

I finally started cleaning out the last unfinished room of the basement to prep for the game room. I have to draw up some plans and post them in the coming weeks.

Sorry for the late reply, It's been a while as I trapped myself in the theater for 4 months to enjoy it... I bought the sub wire from monoprice. All the speakers are wire with monster cable - 14 guage I believe. I bought a 250 spool from e-baaay. I just finished buying all the bathroom stuff for the final room. Still have one wall to construct also. I'll take some pictures and post before any of the sheetrock goes up.
