Hello fellow forum HT builders

I started this basement project about 4 months ago and it is going pretty good. There is alot left to do. Thought I would share some pictures.

The basement will have bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom, game room, Home theater and lobby.

hello chinadog
thank you.
one day i will be doing the drywall.
the room is 21.5 ft. by 14.5 ft.
the opening is the entrance to the theater. I will put drapes between walls. very thick lightblocking drapes. Possible motorized.

columns will be in and outside the theater. 6 total in the theater. they will be just for the look. No speakers or sconces.

I try to keep the work area clean. It makes it easier to fine that dropped screw or nail. :D Those can add up to BIG BUCKS!

sound treatment after the theater is built. nice shaped sectionals to give the theater a design element .the basement and theater has angles and triangluar shapes.. After the columns go up i will put sound treatment on those.

installing tray went pertty good. used finishing nails to hold up the frame. i don't have a magnetic tip so very little dab of liquid nail on the end of a 3 inch screw holds the screw to the tip of bit. Freeing up a hand while attaching frame to wall.

That will be the opening to the theater. It will not have a door, just one or two very thick curtains in wall possibly motorized I have an outlet waiting in the wings just for that scenario. there will also be 2 columns outside the theater mirroring the 2 inside the theater.

after I built the columns it reminds me of the monster in the old bugs bunny cartoon that ran through all the walls leaving his body shape in every wall.:D

do you guys thinks i should put installation in the voids of the columns?

Larry,

My gut tells me it won't matter either way because they are such small spaces. BUT (there is always one of those), while the column is open, you might was well do it. It won't take much material at all to stuff them tight.

the riser is roughly 14.5 ft. by 10ft. minus the angles in the back. the room is 14.5ft by 21.5ft. Yes i like a close viewing angle. the back row will most likely be the sweet spot. The screen will be tamed down a bit with either a wrapped 1x6 or 1x8 border increasing the heighth for the back row. that is the beauty of making your screen., you could add thicker black borders for small corrections for viewing angles. my low screen and the size of it I am still looking at 7.5 inches to have minimum clearance according to the riser calculator. that is the reason of low profile seats up front and still have matching seats throughout.

I may need to make a second rise for the back row  weighing my options.

:D and the winner is exipnos. :D
yep it sure is.

just wanted to say i love the name. i used to work at the chesterfield 4 werenberg theater (which is probably not even there anymore). you should make a intro video with your family signing... ba ba ba baa, baa ba ba ba ba ba baa ba ba ba ba ba ba ba baa ba ba...larennnnburg theaters, theaters, theaters, da da da! larenburg theaters! ba ba ba ba BA!

if you haven't been to a werenberg theaters sometime in the 80's this post will make no sense to you.

I was wondering when somebody would make the connection.
My sister worked at the wehrenberg theater at granview in the late 70's. where i watched smoking and the bandit, foul play and Rocky.
I did animation for my theme about a year ago and have 2001 space oddesy. would like to rebuild the theme with the Larenberg song.

If that was the theater right there by chesterfield mall that did close about 7-10 years ago.

There is a new mega theater in the valley of chesterfield not sure if it is a wehrenberg theater though?

that was the one, in the parking lot. 4 screen crap box that got all the crappy movies since the clarkson 6 like a mile a way got the good stuff. i still have my name badge from that job and i think i have some of the film from the intro somewhere, i might have thrown that out at sometime though. anyway, the reference wasn't lost on me, i think whenever i go back to st.louis i avoid werenberg since i'm sure they've replaced that intro with some lame 3D animation...and that would make me angry...they wouldn't like me when i'm angry.

I acquired C4D about 2 years ago. I never took any animation classes. This was all new stuff to me and at first I was totally blown away by the possibilities of what you can do in the 3 d world. At the most that I can do is create basic shapes and move them around. the theme is looking through first person and the camera flies thru the 3d world. some of the objects were created by more experienced animators. {like the earth and chairs in the theater}I didn't even touch the surface with this software. I would love to work on it again when the theater is done and tap into body paint and pyro clusters. the jargon was a learning experience as well.
here is a earth that was aquired on the C4D site. I just made it glow alittle.

light Sanding and 2nd coat of of mud will go up next, then priming will be next. I used paper metal tape for inside and outside corners. Roughly 700 ft. of tape to do theater. I liked using the paper metal tape for inside corners but could have saved a little money just using regular paper tape. I back buttered all the paper /metal tape, this worked well.

thank you guys on the compliments.

Just an observation when mudding.

I used perforated tape when i started mudding. It seemed to work good since you can stick it right to the joint, but what I have found it bubbles up especially on the butt joints. It didn't do to bad with recessed joints. I would not recommend it. For inside and outside corners you guys know I love the paper metal tape, great stuff. One thing I have experimented with is the sure corner stuff. It is suppose to be used in the inside corners but have found that is could make for a real good butt joint tape. So through my mudding adventures this is what I use;

1. recess joints= regular paper tape.
2. sure corner tape = butt joints
3. inside and outside corners= paper \metal tape

what do you guys like or prefer?

Happy Birthday Larry! Hope the Mrs bought you something home theater-ish.

Seam and butt joints: Fiberglass tape.
Inside and outside corners (45 degress): Metal/tape combo.
Inside and outside corners (135 degress): It's this thick tape with a ruler on it, give it a secure, straight inside or outside edge like the metal, except you don't need to bend the metal. It's real thick though, requires some serious feathering.

man, thanks Bud!

I have not used the fiberglass stuff yet. Does it lay flat? and do the ends fray up?

The paper/metal tape is awesome. When I did my basement in 1995 I could of really used this stuff. Not sure if it was around then.

regarding paper/metal tape,
Bud did you put the mud on the wall or did you back butter the pieces?

I used a 2 in fiberglass board and layed the tape down and coated the back of tape. I know there is a hopper for this but the board worked fine. Just need to knife away any old mud before it dries.

chinadog
02-16-06, 05:28 PM
For the corners, I actually took a small mud knife and when down each side of the corner, then ran the knife down each side to even it out and get off the excess, leaving enough on to keep the corner in place. From there I pop the corner in. If it was an inside corner, I used the V-shaped corner knife to force it in the corner and get the remaining excess out. For an outside corner the other V-shaped corner tool didn't work well, so I just went back over each side with pressure to force out the excess. I found if you leave two much in there, it humps. Too little you can always slit the tape with a utility knife and push in more compound or even squeeze in a little Elmers or Gorilla glue.

The fiberglass stuff works well and won't crack at all unless you have a serious shift or settlement problem. It's nice because you can just put it right on the wall, it has its own adhesive. Once in a while you get a stringing piece, but I tend to check prior to mudding. It's sandable as well. The hard part is finding the end sometimes on the roll! It's like that clear packing tape, it's hard to find.

Bud

larryep
02-16-06, 06:04 PM
might have t give the fiberglass stuff a whirl. I did like the conveinece of the self adhesive. but the stuff I used would bubble up.

for those who read this thread the self adhesive tape with small round holes is problematic. It tends to bubble up.

Larry-Your theater is shaping up to be quite impressive! I absolutely love the unique dimensioning you have done. Quick question-with your rear base enclosure, what type (if any) of accoustical treatment do you plan to put in the enclosure itself? Also-do you recall how deep your soffits are? From the picture they look to be about 12-14" deep.

The bass enclosure in the back of room is one of 2 places I might put the sub. When the sub goes in i will experiment with some really thick bass traps. another harebrain idea i had was to control the sub to move forward out of its hole and right behind the middle theater chair. I did put a dedicated outlet in front of the theater if the sub placement in rear just doesn't work.

the tray is 18.5 inches from wall. the top moulding peace is 19.5 from wall. plenty of room up there for emt for low volt wiring and all video /audio cables.
who knows maybe one day one ribbon speaker can wrap the room for a new audio technology.

Thanks for the info. I am building a soffit somewhat similar to yours and am planning on 16" wide and was concerned it would protrude too much into the room. I'm not so worried now :D

also i used 3 inch screws and applied liquid nail on back of stud to drywall. leveling the tray with stud to floor and let the liquid nail dry.over time columns will hep support. throw a stud in tray flat to the columns top. the drywall will cave in if you don't. positioning the column under the tray gives a little more leveling with out the drywall caving in from shims.

the lighting on the columns really show the flaws but very helpful to correct. the one area is in the middle and will fix with other coat of mud and a wet sand.

the paint on ceiling and front wall is flat enamel american tradition. even being flat enamel it still is noticeable with the rope lighting. went back to the flat black latex. produces an even glow around tray
unlike the flat enamel in the picture
http://img416.imageshack.us/img416/1737/im000680medium7pa.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

i will take a picture of the flat latex. though the latex is very prone to smudges I will put this on ceiling and the flat black enamel on front walls.

Larry,

Wanted to give you a drywall mud tip if you have not already found this jewel. They have a dustless mud at the local HD/Lowes that comes in a grey container with a blue top. While it is much better than regular drywal mud in terms of sanding dust (it tends to just drop straight down instead of linger in the air) it also is much easier to apply/coat/work with.

This drywall mud goes on like warm butter...very smooth and nice. Anyhow, it is a couple of dollars more expensive, but in my opinion well worth the investment for the ease of use.

Your theater is looking great!

thanks for the tip. I might have to give it a whirl. I am finishing the rest of the basement now.
smooth mud is a must in drywalling. I mix my mud in a bucket with water to thin out the mud whenever it stiffings up.
for the dyityourselfer this web site is one of the best tools to have. I have learned a lot.
this video on putty coating is great video. now thats how they make straight mud work.

All I can say is DAMN..That is about the coolest thing Ive seen built - well there others, its just that I hate Geometry but I love to see people who understand the angle concepts and be able to put it together...God bless - you have some vision with talent...your place looks awesome..Im barely becoming a handy guy now - and Im barely starting to understand straight line stuff - that work you doing looks seriously intimidating...

Im curious about how many of you guys actually are builders by trade, as far as work goes...the advice here seems like their would be tons of them, but something tells me that you guys have other jobs that do not fall in line with this type of work - I SERIOUSLY ENVY YOU ALL...Keep the pictures coming...its pretty breathtaking..

Larry,

Love the theater! What a unique entrance and the columns are ingenious! Just got up to speed on your thread and read a few posts back the reference to Wehrenberg theaters in STL. Having grown up in St. Charles, I remember well the kitchy Wehrenberg theme song before the movies. See if this (http://forums.cinematour.com/ubbpics/wehrenberg_theme_old_441_mono_128k.mp3) brings back any memories. :D

Great work,

thank you for the compliment. My work for the past 10 years has revolved around maintenance. so you can say I picked up on things along the way. I have always loved to build things.

when I was little the Wehrenberg theme was something I liked when I went to the movies. The version I like is when they whisper Wehrenberg on the left side and then on the right side then I think it is whispered to the rear speakers.

ronnie and Steve thank you guys.
I wanted to do most of the theater so I can think a little longer on colors and scheme while i finish the rest of the basement. To keep it simple I will put darker colors of a color pallet in the theater and the lighter colors in the rest of basement.

Larry:

Awesome work. I'm looking for ideas for columns for a futuristic-style home theater, something beyond the semi-round and rectangular usuals. Some polygon or cool shape with the light inside and (for the middle ones) a spot for the speaker. Do you think a 2x4 frame and sheetrock is the best way to go? Any other tips about making odd-shaped columns?

Thanks!

Equusz sorry for the delay on response.
sometimes I get caught up on other threads.

depending how thick you want your columns. I used 2 x 6 studs for my desired thickness. Adding another 1 inch from drywall.
when making multiples of the same shape keep all your cuts identical when framing.
the rotozip is a great tool to use for trimming the drywall.

no real drawn up layout. the room is 21 ft. by 14.5 ft. the rear of theater comes to sharp angles to the center.
the only layout drawn was by the carpet measurer which if you saw that you would have to laugh.

larryep
07-31-06, 04:07 PM
I think the lawn chair is a staple of any theater construction. The chair you can stand on, paint over, do drywall mudding around and when the dust settles the equipment comes out and after 2 hours of watching a movie sitting in the same chair you count the days of when the 088,s arrive. screw the days, make that the hours or even minutes.

For 6.99 a chair they go a long way.

larryep
07-31-06, 04:13 PM
I think the star trek resemblance is because of the center console giving the seat behind it the captains chair. (my chair)

I am looking for a curtain system that would open the curtains like the doors on star trek. As you approach they open quickly then close with the same speed. that would be vary cool. I have found automatic curtains, but not with motion sensor on inside and outside of theater. much like ANY home depot, but for a curtain.

Steve,

The bowl was a peice of cake with the chrome trap that was recommended with the bowl.
This type of bowl sits up high (around 7.5 inches). I had to return the taller (35in) base cabinets and get shorter ones (31in.) something to consider. you don't want the bowl to be to high. Hooking the chrome piping to pvc in wall is simple with a pvc adapter piece that will fit the chrome pipe. It was all virtually just hand tightened, accept the bowl to the counter top.Gave that a twist with a wrench. the faucets are from the Danze product line.
one other thing, be there when they drill the hole for bowl unless you drill it yourself. you want the bowl to lineup with the faucet and the way the water hits the bowl.

Do you have any problems with water splashing on the red paint? Anywhere I've wiped dust or fingerprints off my red wall (satin gloss level from Sherwin Williams) it's still noticeable after it dries (weird). Just wondered if that was a problem or once you get it all wet it looks the same and it's no big deal? (I have a wet bar in my room and worry about that once I get the faucet installed).

larryep
12-12-06, 07:27 PM
thank you
jikkjack

i bought a product made by sherwin williams called industrial urethane with the color i wanted. This stuff wont be on the shelf in the front of the store. It most likely will be in the back.

i first sanded the concrete with a floor machine and a 18 inch round 80 grit paper.
then clean all dust up real good off of floor.( thinner dust then drywall) rolled 2 coats of the urethane.
then 4 coats of a product called sher coat ( it is water based). this is also made by SW.

the urethane goes on nice and even when dries.

the sher coat can leave roll marks real easy. I used a 3/8 nap roller. I should of used a 1/4 inch. I used the sher coat to give the floor a really high shine. as far as rolling this stuff on it is the hardest stuff i used to make even.
even or not you will have a really shiny floor. also 2 coats of the sher coat is good enough.

i did fill expansion crack with a caulk for concrete. i put about 4 coats of the chalk since it kept on settling. and wipe any access of the 2 sides of the crack.

as good as it turned out i should of filled any small indentions. filling or not i was really pleased with the out come.

be warned the urethane will stink up the whole house.
the whole project cost 200 bucks for about 500 sq. ft. 2 gallons of each, couple sanding disc and some rollers.

Wow, I have to reply to this thread in general. Being that it's my new favorite thread.

1. The very second I read your post, I wondered if you were from St. Louis, then seeing you were I immediately drew the correlation. I worked for Wehrenberg for 6 years (Clarkson 6 Cine and Des Peres 14), loved every minute of it. Worked concession for the first year, then box office most of the rest of the time, and worked in the projection booth quite a bit too. I loved the old Wehrenberg theme, thanks so much to the individual that shared that, brought back great memories. I'm still trying to talk K2 into bringing that theme back!

2. Finally someone in my area that's going all out on his HT. I grew up in Chesterfield and now live in the New Town at St. Charles. My wife is almost ready for me to go all out and build a HT and I've been trying to find someone locally that's doing it. I'd like to come out sometime and see yours if possible, heck I'll create a website for you if you want. That's what I do for a living. I have a much better camera too including a wide angle.

3. I'm about to be 35 years old and I love White Castle, always have since my father took me there the first time when I was about 8. At least that's the first time I remember going.

4. I love the LOTR and Harry Potter movies!!

Anyway good luck and keep building!!

Mark

PS. Not only is Chesterfield 4 not there anymore, now Clarkson 6 has been torn down. Chesterfield now has 2 theaters, Wehrenberg Galaxy 14 down in the valley (my best friend is the projectionist there) and AMC Chesterfield 14 in the mall.

That town is really growing i drove thru there couple of months ago. love the cows. seeing the theater would not be a problem. It still is not finished but i think it will never be finished.

I went with urathane over epoxy because I heard that the epoxy can pop up easier. It has been down for 4 months and hasn't changed. It was a 2 hundred dollar job, so if it fails it would be no real loss. Check with a shirwin williams rep for regarding radiant heat.(industrial urathane and then sher coat)
If it lasts for 5 years I would be really happy.

Dcostanza

larryep,
Thanks for the reply. Called the local SW operation and they don't have the urethane product, need to make a few more calls. Since I won't get any local answers until Tuesday here's another question. If you were to visualize a cross-section of the floor, how thick would you say the floor is? It the urethane merely a paint or is there a density that adds height with every coat? The reason I inquire is because I was curious as to whether this would be a product in which ceramic tiles could be inlaid.

Thanks again,
Don

I use a cheapie digital camera and when I want good shots, I stick it on a tripod, set the timer and let it choose all the settings. Normally, it takes a 2 second exposure, sometimes a second and since it's on the tripod, everything is in focus (I don't have to try to hold the camera still) and any floor movement is taken care of since I have it set to timed and get away from it (I am on the second floor so the floor moves a little).

Larry,

Room looks great! I will never get tired of the cool door entrance. I had a questions about your LED lit star ceiling. What did you use for your LED source? Did you say you had (2) light units? Does it look convincing with the color changes? Do they fade in/out?

AND.. I think we need to start a Larryep fund for a new digital camera :D ;). I'll put in the first $10 :)

Could pretty easily make one yourself...they have color changing LED spotlights for about $30 over on wiedemark.com, that screw into standard light fixtures...could fashion your own connector. On the other hand, this one (http://trinorthlighting.com/Store/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=53) is a pretty good deal but it's not LED.

I don't know if you guys dwelled on what material to use for your counter tops/bars but I did. Granite? to expensive. laminate? granite tiles? not seamless.
I decided to go with envirotex bar top epoxy. I have 4 counters to do and granite would be about 3 grand:eek: the double 3/4 inch mdf would me 200 bucks and epoxy, rollers, cups, sticks, glitter, liquid nail,pepper,salt,screws,1/16th cut strands of speaker wire, chopped up oranments in food processer, and other odds and ends ran about 150 bucks. Not bad. here is the steps I took to create the first counter.

steps to complete kitchenette counter of 15 sq. feet

1. use a dark bonding primer.
2. 2-3 coats of black epoxy with black glitter and sand.
3. 2-3 coats of black epoxy with using faux roller.
4. for sides of counter. Mix a small batch of envirotex with silver glitter and copper strands. (copper will sink)
apply with putty knife.

5. 1 seal coat of envirotex with glitter glass sprinkled.
6. 1 seal coat of envirotex with 2 lines of black glitter/a ratio of 1 to 4 of silver
to black glitter equals also 2 lines on cup. /maybe 2 lines on plastic cup of black pepper?
sprinkled on it.
7. 1 seal coat of envirotex with copper stands sprinkled.

8. 4-5 coats of envirotex to give that glass like appearace.flooding fully.
9. let dry for 72 hours.
10. use a carnauba base wax and apply and let dry.
11. buff wax to a protective shine.

*additional coats of envirotex needs at least 8 hours to dry.*
*If touched, clean with alcohol before next coat.*
*all envirotex coats applied with a 4 inch high density foam roller*

Larry,

Awesome job. I am impressed as well. You gave me an idea for my wet bar. The Granite for my small top (7' x 2') with an undermount sink was about $800-$1000. However, it does look like a lot of time to get the job done. It seems like time is at a premium these days -- so my may have to bite the bullet and get Granite.

Glad to see you back at work on the room :)

Thank you. It is a process. But if you can get a couple coats in a day You will have the project done in a week. The acually work is minimal over the time you wait for coats to dry. I did the table and small counter in theater Started on this past sunday and tonight I have put final coat on both. I will wait a couple of days and apply the wax.

one other thing, If you need to use something to catch the epoxy drips use masking paper. the stuff I have is wax paper on 1 side. If newspaper/paper is used triple it up or else the epoxy will soak thru.

Larry, Are you finished with the bar/kitchen area yet?

I have seen this theater in person and let me say that the pictures don't do it justice! It is very well planned and very well crafted. Heck, Larry even told me that he picked out that floor plan from his builder "because" of the basement. Now that is some serious dedication. Maybe I'll have to go over there sometime with my camera so we can get some "real" pictures of it.

Keep up the good work Larry!

Welcome to the forum newbie. This is a great place to learn and give advice for a passion we all share.A party is due.
I will have to load up some pics of the kitchenette/bar. It came out really good with alot of steps. 2 weeks time in all. first week was installing the 2 layer mdf. screwing and gluing the 2 sheets togeather. cutting to fit into space. (2 pieces to make up whole area.) I will give somebody a thousand bucks if they can find the seam!!:D I poured envirotex around perimeter and into groove of 2 pieces then sanded. after that I added the black epoxy.

The "plans" are going great! The construction is still non-existent. It is on hold while we finish the nursery. I wanted to start on the basement and then do the nursery since she isn't even due until August, but...:(

I recently changed my berkline 088 seating arrangement. I had 2 berks in the front row and three in the back row. I created 2 love seats on each side of the center seat in the back row. (the love seats are really liked by my girl friend).

berkline doesn't show this configuration with 2 wedges on each side of the center seat and the love seats on each side, but it can be done. the current chairs that have or straight arm rest sides. I removed the front row sides to work with the back row. The important thing when making a love seat is connecting the 2 chairs together so they don't move. This way the power reclines don't hit one another. There will be a small gap between the love seat. This gives enough room for the power recline. I did have to build 2 small risers to fit the 5 chairs across.

The other thing I changed was the pictures. I use to have the pictures vertical with a 27 x 40 poster in it. So I hunted around on the Internet and found very few Horizontal posters but found 3 that I liked. If you guys know of a place for horizontal posters please post.

Larry,

What did you use for your blue light? It looks SO blue and has a good even lighting pattern. I used rope and it creates a slight "bumpy" lighting look.
http://img294.imageshack.us/img294/2772/im000179mv3.jpg

I have seen some pre-made tables that fit into cup holders but cannot remember where. However, with your skills, you can probably make some very nice ones.

EDIT -- I found one cup holder converter (http://www.htmart.com/product.php?productid=74) -- even cheaper HERE (http://www.htmarket.com/home-theater-furniture-home-theater-seating-snack-trays.html). Another design HERE (http://www.theaterseatstore.com/cinema-snack-tray). But, IMO, you can make something a lot nicer than this for a fraction of the cost.

Steve, regarding the blue light, i used blue led rope lights. The picture that was taken kinda blends the blue light. For the most part the light is evenly distributed.

Thank you for the heads up on the trays. 30 bucks a pop. I do have a prototype that I made. I used 3 in. pvc and purchased a 3.5 inch hole saw (20 bucks) I would like to make a 2 teer tray that can hold the keyboard and other controllers on bottom shelf and paint and epoxy them like the counters.

I have extra cup holders for my berk 88 and I would put them in the upper part of the tray, but that means buying a 4 inch hole saw (25 bucks) or jig out a 4 inch hole. The pvc that is in the picture is hammered into the wood. It fit really snug. really don't need to screw it or glue it. If I epoxy that will be good enough. The pvc fits well in the cupholders and you can spin the tray real easy.

the question is to buy or build.
I am building real collection of hole saws!

Larry,

Prototype looks good. You could use a router to cut your holes (via this (http://www.amazon.com/Jasper-200J-Circle-Cutting-Plunge/dp/B00009K77A/ref=pd_cp_hi_0?pf_rd_p=413863601&pf_rd_s=center-41&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00009K77C&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1H40YQS2WZ8WTR6FA8DM) jig). This would give you unlimited hole sizes without the need to buy more hole saws. I used mine like crazy when I built my speakers.

I think DIY will net you a better product and the exact size you want. The idea of the pass-thru for the cup is brilliant.

BTW -- where did you buy the LED lighting? Last time I looked, it was still pretty expensive.

Your theater looks really good! This is the first time that I saw your thread and I read straight through it. I am from Highland IL and I was reading all the references to White Castle and Wehrenberg Theaters and was LOL.
