VisionxOrb 11-10-05, 06:12 PM I didnt see on and since these are now avalible ( although limited ) I figure its time to start one.
For those who have the 2600, has anyone tried the scaling? if so how is it?
renpar61 11-10-05, 08:07 PM Good call.
I am curious too, since I am looking to buy a 1600 or 2600 myself. I'd like to know how each one would handle the signal from a Motorola 6412 STB via component and outputting via HDMI: would it automatically scale 480i material to 1080i and pass through 1080i from HD channels untouched?
I don't think the 2600 is available yet.
The 2600 is not even available in Japan yet... Anxiously awaiting it's arrival, however.
MaximumBob 11-10-05, 09:03 PM slowine just got one. I'm considering buying one, however, I have Klipsch speakers all around and was worried that the Yamaha receivers would make them too bright. I've heard that the new receivers have a warmer sound. Is this true?
HDPackfan 11-10-05, 10:42 PM I picked mine up from the Tweeter warehouse this past Saturday and it was in my local Tweeter as of yesterday. so far I'm loving it....much better sound and, way more powerful than my HTR 5790 (which I really liked), and it even runs cooler. The upscaling works ok...my SD picture is probably about 20 to 30% better than with the Samsung Plasma doing the scaling. I'm not sure it would change much with a TV that has a better scaler though.
And Maximum I also have Klipsch all around...3 SLX's up front and 5800 wall/ceiling speakers in back with a Mirage S10 sub. I like the sound alot as the system is really really loud with the additional power from the receiver and the high sensitivity of the Klipsch speakers. But, to be honest I know nothing about sound or music---I couldn't tell bright from warm from ice cold. I just like my room to shake when I watch a movie.
Edit: The one I picked up from the warehouse, wouldn't upscale. I exchanged it at Tweeter today for a different 2600 and now I can finally upscale.
Speedybird 11-11-05, 12:08 AM HDPackfan - you wouldn't happen to be Packk01 over on Audioholics forum? I'm guessing so since the names are similiar and it sounds like the same issue posted over there.
As one of the earlybirds any additional info / comments are always appreciated.
I hope to pick up my 2600 in a day or two. I've been holding out for their release.
I still have my college junk from 15+ yrs ago and figure it was time for an upgrade. I'm planning on picking up a Panny 8UK at the same time. I've been wishy washy on the speakers but have narrowed the field to Klipsch Reference series. RVX-54 / RVX-42 / RW12 / surrounds.
Seems to be a lot of passion on the forums regarding speakers and the basic lesson I've taken is go listen and buy what you like. Unfortunately, only one shop in town carries the 2600 so options are limited.
I've been out of the loop for so long with respect to the technology it has been a fun learning experience. These forums are awesome to gather information and learn from.
Enjoy
GlocksRock 11-11-05, 12:31 AM I just got my 1600 up and running a few hours ago, I still have to read the manual to figure out some little stuff, and do some tweaking, but so far I'm really liking it. I'm very glad I waited to get this instead of getting a HTR-5990.
VisionxOrb 11-11-05, 01:09 AM the only scaling i have is from my 2003 model hitachi 50v500, if the scaler is better than your plasma the hopefully its better than the one in my tv.
HDPackfan 11-11-05, 01:37 AM I bugged the guys at my local Tweeter about this receiver so much that they let me pick it up at the warehouse the day they came in. I had gotten so sick of the SD scaling from my HD box and it seemed like such a good deal not having to buy a separate scaler and receiver. As I said I am very happy with the receiver now that I have one that actually does the scaling...even my wife noticed the difference in SD quality. As far as sound, I really don't know any of the nuances but I've wanted a kick ass receiver and sub so that I can feel the kick when the movie is playing. This receiver does it for me.
To be honest I don't know if it will make that much of a difference to those with excellent scalers in their TV's. I have last years Samsung Plasma and it doesn't do a great job with SD...although to my eye it gives a great HD picture.
One thing I might add is that the 2600 does not upscale HDMI input to HDMI output. It will only upscale an analog signal that has NOT already been upscaled. As an example, it won't upscale a digital signal from an upscaling DVD player that is already sending an upscaled signal.
HDPackfan 11-11-05, 01:49 AM In reading all of the posts here, there sounds like there are great speakers out there. I like the Klipsch because of their high sensitivity so they play loud with less juice. My wife is understanding about my recent spending spree as long as the speakers are heard but not seen. The 5800's are loud and seem to have a good clean sound and the price at the Goodguys closeout sale were too good to pass up. I listened to the RVX54's at Goodguys and they sounded awesome but they did not meet the heard but not seen requirement so I settled for the 3 synergy SLX's for the 2 fronts and center. Not a perfect match with the reference in wall/ceiling back surrounds but I wouldn't know the difference if they were totally mismatched so I guess it is sometimes good to be tone deaf.
renpar61 11-11-05, 07:20 AM Has anyone tried the 2600 (or1600) to output with a HDMI to DVI cable? Would this work?
Also, do they output the on screen guide through HDMI?
matt_he 11-11-05, 10:42 AM I'm still debating between the htr-5990 and the rxv-2600, because it doesn't look like the latter is available in my city. Looks to me like the only difference is the upscaling. If I have a dvd player that upscales, do I need this feature? Does upscaling help regular tv? I'm going to get a Sony DVD changer and I plan on running it and my comcast box and through the receiver, and running 1 hdmi cable to my Vizio plasma.
If I do decide to get the 2600, any suggestions as to a good online source? I see AV Perfection has it at a good price, is anyone familiar with this outfit?
Any advice would be appreciated.
DeepFreeze451 11-11-05, 11:35 AM updates? hows theamp output?
Wood2395 11-11-05, 11:57 AM Just saw the 2600 today at a dealer. They also carry Denon but didn't have a 3806 set up to do a direct comparison. I must say, the 2600 is 100 times sexier looking. It sounds great, seems to have better features, and of course, the presence outputs, which are intruiging. I'm definitely leaning this way over the 3806, especially with all the HDMI switching problems reported with the Denon.
A question for anyone with the 2600. Do you have any trouble passing HDCP through the 2600 using HDMI ports?
I am specifically conserned about DVI on STB to HDMI on 2600 the passing that to HDMI (2600) to HDMI on TV.
I have heard of others with HDCP issues when using an A/V reciever.

This was my question also, I've heard of issues with both the Denon and the Pioneer. I also read that the upscaling occurs only when the incoming signal is analog, but I'm not sure if this is true for the 2600 as well. In that case the STB should be connected through component to use the feature. Can anyone confirm?
HDPackfan 11-11-05, 08:43 PM I haven't had any problem passing through from the DVI port on my Moxi HD DVR to the Receiver and out of the receiver from HDMI to the TV...although it sometimes says HDCP error on the front of the receiver. It only seems to be a problem (ie the error message) when I start from a component source to the receiver and out of the receiver from component to the TV. It is fixed just by going to a digital input and then back to the component input. Regardless the picture and sound are not effected at all even though the error shows up. This is explained in the manual but it doesn't effect the picture on the TV at all.
Just so you know though it does not appear you can upscale digital information, just analog. I am still learning to work this thing but that is my understanding from the manual and from playing with the receiver.
HDPackfan 11-11-05, 08:44 PM I do have to say one thing, my wife and daughter are out and I am cranking Credence Clearwater Revival through the "pure direct" and I AM JUST LOVING this receiver.
Hi,
Per Yamaha's website:
RX-V1600 has
"Fully Analog Video Up-Conversion including onto HDMI, De-Interlacing (480i to 480p)".
RX-V2600 has
"Fully Analog Video Up-Conversion, including onto HDMI, De-Interlacing and Up-Scaling to 1080i/720p"
I understand "de-interlacing 480i to 480p". What is the difference between Up-Conversion and Up-Scaling ? They both seem to have Up-Conversion !
Thanks
Murali
Tom Grooms 11-11-05, 09:23 PM The 1600 will take 480i to 480p, the 2600 will take 480i to 480p/720p/1080i
I do have to say one thing, my wife and daughter are out and I am cranking Credence Clearwater Revival through the "pure direct" and I AM JUST LOVING this receiver.I wish I were there :D
Sgt_Strider 11-11-05, 10:23 PM What's the MSRP for the RX-V1600 and 2600?
Speedybird 11-11-05, 11:52 PM Alrighty then...I picked up a RX-V2600 tonight but Plasma not due for a week...speakers not due for a week....
so I went ahead and hooked up my old speakers just to give it a listen.
Press Master On/Off button and I hear click-click.
Press Main Zone On/Off button and I hear click-click.
nothing else :(
I must say, very anti-climatic.
maybe a new 2600 will be available in.......a week?
Manuals are now online too at the Yamaha site

Too bad, doesn't sound like yamaha, they are one of the most reliable companies around :P
ntjbjhq 11-12-05, 07:32 AM Also bought at tweeter (picked up from the warehouse where they have 120 in stock as of yesterday, in atlanta anyways).
What would you all recommend for some decent small speakers? I used to have the energy take 5 system, LOVED it, but the kids ended up killing them by cranking the volume to 100 on my old receiver and blowing several drivers before I could get to it and turn it down :(. Does anyone know if they will repair these speakers? Any ideas on cost and if its worth the price of a repair or not?
I'd like to stay small, but want a big sound. My current onkyo speakers came with an HTIB (I know, but thats all I could afford at the time). They sound too bright and harsh, need something with some decent response, and hopefully a warm sound.
Look forward to any ideas you might have!
Oh, and the 2600 rocks! I returned a Denon AVR3806 to get the Yamaha due to the fact that it will not allow me to use the HDMI port because my TV won't take 480i in on the HDMI port. I think the yamaha sounds just as good, if not better, but had limited time, and don't have the proper speakers to really do a good test. I'm fully happy with the 2600 though (but hated to give up the denon because I've wanted one for 5 years).
Anyways, I'll stop rambling.
Thanks in advance!
Robert
renpar61 11-12-05, 07:32 AM HDPackFan,
any problem with on screen guide through HDMI?
ntjbjhq 11-12-05, 08:04 AM HDPackFan,
any problem with on screen guide through HDMI?
None, works great, which is another reason I returned the denon, it would not display via HDMI. I also have my (non-hd) dish receiver connected via s-video, and out to the display via HDMI upconverted to 1080i. Picture looks maybe a bit soft, but improvement vs direct s-video connection for sure.
MaximumBob 11-12-05, 09:07 AM I've been wishy washy on the speakers but have narrowed the field to Klipsch Reference series. RVX-54 / RVX-42 / RW12 / surrounds.
I just bought three RVX-42s for my lcr and four RSX-5s for the surrounds. I think it's a little over kill on the surrounds though, 3's or 4's would have done just fine. I like the really 42 for the center when watching movies; the dialog actually comes out pretty crisp. My old center was weak when it came to dialog.
I'm probably going to pick the 2600 for Christmas.
HDPackfan 11-12-05, 09:34 AM As ntjb said the onscreen guide has worked fine with the HDMI output and the component output. I haven't hooked up any s-video or composite inputs/outputs yet so I can't speak to them.
HDPackfan 11-12-05, 09:48 AM As to speakers, I have Klipsch all around. They have very high sensitivity levels so they are very very loud with this receiver. To be honest, I know nothing about sound, ie. bright, warm etc. I have read here that Klipsch are bright speakers and Yamaha have bright receivers so someone who understands music or sound probably wouldn't like the setup. For me, however, with movies shaking the room (I have a Mirage S10 sub that I bought based on what I read here) and for rock and roll such as Credence and the Doors it sounds great to me
GlocksRock 11-12-05, 10:24 AM I'm rocking out to some Pink Floyd - The Wall in "Pure Direct" mode right now, and it sounds fantastic, even on my lowly Polk R30's.
Wakefield103 11-12-05, 09:26 PM Hi all,
I am trying to determine between the Yamaha 2600, the Pioneer 74TXV, Onkyo 803, and the JVC 702. Of the 4, I'm leaning most toward, the Yammy 2600 or the JVC 701. I've owned Yamaha in the past and been very pleased, but I am really struggling with the extra cost over the JVC. Especially since I keep thinking that I am goinng to want to upgrade within a year or two with all the new standards and formats that are coming out.
Can someone please help expain the the benefits of the 2600 over the 701? I understand that the amps (analog vs digital) are a big difference. But does that really make one better than the other?
Some more info on what I am looking for:
- 7.1 capability
- Video switching (analog and digital)
- My room size is 18 x 20. tile floors, so not the greatest for sound.
What I already have\don't have:
- Sonance Virtuoso RS2 sides and rears
- Have not selected my fronts or center speakers yet
jandawil 11-12-05, 11:48 PM Can someone please help expain the the benefits of the 2600 over the 701? I understand that the amps (analog vs digital) are a big difference. But does that really make one better than the other?
It would be hard to explain benefits if we don't really know what is most important to you (or anyone for that mater). Most newer AV receivers will do switching up to and including HDMI. The big seller on the 2600 is the scaling and upconversion from 480i/P up to HDMI/720P or 1080I). The Yammi is the only game in town for this so if it's important to you than go for the 2600. If it's not, than just audition receivers and listen. One word of wisdom is to decide on speakers first as these are far more important than even the receiver. Once you are sold on the speakers than look for the amp and see how they react with your chosen speakers. Some combinations are not as good as others so it's really a personal thing. That's just my .02.
Tom Grooms 11-13-05, 12:25 AM cancel the goofy color fonts please, some of us view the AVS forums with a white background

Better now?? Funny thing is is that when you do a quote grab....it changes it to white and puts it in a white box...perhaps if you chose the white background it's different. I for one cant stand looking at a white monitor. I'll keep the text yellow.
Wakefield103 11-13-05, 12:55 AM Hi jandail,
Thanks for the feedback. Video conversion from the analog connections to the digital connections is important to me. Scaling in additon to conversion is a plus. HDMI capable and switching is also important. It was my understanding that the JVC 701 also did scaling and upconversion form 480i/P up to HDMI/720P or 1080I. It does it using a Faroudja processor. Can any else confirm that?
As for what else is important, obvioulsy good sound, support of all the multichannel formats, THX cert is a plus, room auto-setup is a plus.
As for as the speakers, thats a whole other challenge. Im a newbie at all this, and I am trying hard to do some research and not just run out to Best Buy or Circuit City (our two local chain stores). Luckly I bought the surrounds and rears when I built the house, so I don't have to decide on those.
jandawil 11-13-05, 01:29 AM 701 does sound interesting. Haven't heard it. I have heard the Yamaha 2500 at GG and was blown away by the sound. The Cinema DSP mode was fantastic for HT. My search ended there after comparing it to the Denon in their demo room. In my experience you will not find great speakers at Circuit City or Best Buy. Circuit City has some good speakers, but not great. Best Buy carries Klipsch which I have and love, but they do not carry their Reference line. Good Guys does and since they are going out of business you may find some at a great price if you are close to one. I would head over to the speaker forums here. I have learned a ton there. Check out some of the internet only speakers like Axiom Audio. These internet companies seem to be by far the best bang for the buck. I'm about to pull the trigger on the Axiom complete HT setup based on Audioholics reviews and these forums. Never heard them, but I have 30 days to audition in my theater which is far better than a showroom floor.
ntjbjhq 11-13-05, 06:25 AM I just bought three RVX-42s for my lcr and four RSX-5s for the surrounds. I think it's a little over kill on the surrounds though, 3's or 4's would have done just fine. I'm probably going to pick the 2600 for Christmas.
Thanks Bob,
How about others? Anyone running anything like the old energy take-5? I'm looking to stay under 1k for a set of speakers... I know I'll sacrifice ultimate sound, but the room is not setup well for acustics to begin with, so I don't want to get really expensive speakers (the wife thinks our current ones are just fine, they make sound come out)...
I'll try to include a couple pics of my current setup...

renpar61 11-13-05, 07:08 AM Wakefield103,
I couldn't find any info on the JVC 701. If you mean the RX-D702 it does HDMI switching and deinterlaces 480i to 480p (no upconversion to 720/1080). I believe the Yamaha is the only one in the market to offer this feature so far.
Thunder1 11-13-05, 08:31 AM Is there any problem going from HDMI from reciver to DVI to Tv? I am going to buy the 2600.
garykagan 11-13-05, 08:36 AM >>Is there any problem going from HDMI from reciver to DVI to Tv? I am going to buy the 2600.<<
I'm no expert, but from what I understand they are the same. A HDMI > DVI cable is what you need or a HDMI cable and a HDMI > DVI end piece to connect to the TV.
I'm looking to get the 2600 as well. It's amazing how everything comes back to ATARI full circle.

Flyhigh 11-13-05, 10:07 AM Is anyone familiar with Park AveElectronics? They are the only vendor I've seen selling the 2600 for under MSRP. Has anyone had any expierience with this site? HERE (http://www.parkaveelectronics.com/product.asp?itemid=YAMRXV2600&l=Froogle)
HDPackfan 11-13-05, 10:48 AM I was wondering what your thoughts were on the receiver. I feel your pain in not getting a properly working one the first time.

Speedybird 11-13-05, 12:43 PM I was wondering what your thoughts were on the receiver. I feel your pain in not getting a properly working one the first time.
The local store I picked the 2600 up from had received two units in and I know he was holding a unit for someone else. Yesterday when I returned the unit he gave me the other one that was on hold. His words were 'earlybird gets the worm'.
Anyway, I have the unit up and running but can't really comment on it yet as I don't have the other components (plasma, speakers, etc.).
For some odd reason it was a surprise to me that the front display was orange/red. I don't know why but I thought it would be bluish in color.
I like the orange / red.
VisionxOrb 11-13-05, 04:48 PM Just ordered my rx-v2600, so hopefully it will be here in a few days. unfortunatly due to the cost, its going under the tree. although ill see if i can hook it up first, to make sure its 100% working and then pack my old trusty rx-v1200 in its place, muhahahahaahah

You could make a case for powering the chiping bird in your tree with the 2600. That might be justifaction for leaving it out. :D
Sominus 11-13-05, 05:52 PM My 1600 came in a few days ago. I chose this receiver because of the de-interlacing feature. I, like many others, wanted to run a single HDMI cable to my TV. De-interlacing is essential since my 50phd8uk (still back ordered) supposedly wont take 480i via HDMI or DVI. After some testing this weekend with a 7th gen Panny ED plasma I'm quite disappointed. Video switching with my 1600 degrades video quality regardless of the input or output method I chose. Here are my subjective results:
Edit: I Forgot to list results for S-video (although, it's just more of the same). N% is of quality running through the receiver compared to a direct connection.
Composite to Receiver

I am not sure I understand correctly what the percentages are referred to, but I understand your disappointment.
I would like to know from 2600 owners how they rate the PQ coming out after 1080i upconversion from different sources. I am planning to go buy it tomorrow. I am really counting to improve the signal from my Comcast STB through upconversion, if that is not clear, I may wait to see the new HK740.

For instance, 80% as good as a direct connection to the TV.
DeepFreeze451 11-13-05, 08:53 PM Sominus, its good you are chiming in. The only reason I even come close to considering the Yamaha 2600 is because it had the Faroudja scalar.
if the scaing and upscaling sucks, im going back to Pioneer elite 56TXi.
HDPackfan 11-13-05, 09:04 PM I have the previous generation Samsung plasma (5031) and I find the upscaler makes the picture better for SD and doesn't effect the HD (which is already very good) so for my house it has been a plus as even my wife noticed the difference in SD. The Panny, however, probably has a better scaler then last years Samsung so it may not help with that TV. I think it probably just depends on the scaler in the TV you already have or are getting. For me the SD increased resolution and the sound of the receiver make it a keeper...I don't know about others.
VisionxOrb 11-13-05, 09:10 PM actually these have the oPlus scaler ( Israel company that got bought by intel in feb of this year i think ).
Also note that the unit sominus has doesnt scale it only delinterlaces to 480p, so the good picture from the 2600 must be related to the scaling circuit
jpenright 11-13-05, 09:29 PM As an owner of a DLT HDTV, one of my AVR requirements is to have audio delay to sync up the audio and video from the various inputs. I was wondering if someone could confirm what I heard:
The 1600 does have an audio delay setting (don't know what the range is 0- xxx ms)
The 2600 does have an audio delay setting AND it can have a different delay value for each input.
Having a setting for each input would be very handy. I believe the new Denon 2106 has this capability.
thanks--jpe
HDPackfan 11-13-05, 09:44 PM I haven't ever had to use it and don't know how to use it. The manual says it has a control range of 0-240(ms). So it has it but whether it does what you need I don't know.

Video switching with my 1600 degrades video quality regardless of the input or output method I chose. Here are my subjective results:
Composite to Receiver
Composite out 80%
Component out 85%
HDMI out 90%
Component to Receiver
Component out 85%
HDMI out 90%
No HDMI device available
Everything I used (all the major game consoles and a dvd player) looked better connected directly to the TV.
Well thats just not the best news Ive heard about this....
I problably among others was looking at the 2600 just for the video switching ability, and hopefully not but once again, the first year out of the gate... needs to be refined...
Still would like to hear more if there is degredation in video signal... Sorry to hear of your dissapointment.. Sominus
Please let us know more as your testing continues... :/

Sominus, its good you are chiming in. The only reason I even come close to considering the Yamaha 2600 is because it had the Faroudja scalar.
if the scaing and upscaling sucks, im going back to Pioneer elite 56TXi.
You better look again if you are really planning on getting a Faroudja scaler in it. Because even though they do list it as offering upscaling to 720p or 1080i. There is also nowhere where they say or make any claim that it has the Faroudja chipset that is doing it for them. There are quite a few other ways of doing scaling besides using the Faroudja stuff, and the only Yamaha that does for sure use it is the RX-Z9.
Ronin_R6 11-13-05, 10:48 PM Thanks for the feedback.
Dont forget that the yammi will display the OSD over HDMI, but the JVC line will not.
I was also under the impression that the Faroudja was only to de-interlace 480i, which is pretty much neccessary because alot of displays will not accept 480i over HDMI.
Also dont forget that the Yammi has 3 component inputs, where the JVC only has two (which if you use both HDMI you can only use 1 of)
Personnaly I am still torn between the two of theese, but the Yammi definitely has the features that make it worth the extra money over the 702.
VisionxOrb 11-13-05, 11:16 PM faroudja, oplus, Zoran, sigma designs, silicon optix ( im sure there are more ) all make deinterlace/scaling chips. From what ive heard these units use chips from oPlus

I just purchased the 2600 today. I haven't hooked it up yet. I am hearing that pq will be better hooked straight to the tv. This will defeat the reason I got this receiver. Does anyone have experience with this yet?

I think so far only one has had worse picture, but that was with the 1600 and not the 2600. sofar the reports on the 2600 scaling seem to be positive. I dont have mine yet so I cant make a first hand review.
ntjbjhq 11-14-05, 05:20 AM I'll start by saying I'm probably not the best person to make a statement on the PQ of the HDMI scaled outputs from the 2600, so I'll provide my general comments on it.
I purchased the new 50" plasma 2 days before the receiver, so I hadn't had much time with the TV before using the HDMI out on the 2600.
My Dish receiver is only capable of s-video on its "highest quality" output. Connected directly to the tv, it appeard OK, but not great. Had the "jaggies" one would say when evalutating digital pictures, looked highly compressed (which the content I'm sure is from dish), and looked like a SD just blown up to fit the screen without 1 concern for PQ.
Using the 2600 to upscale the s-video to 1080i and output through the HDMI port to the TV did make what I'd call a nice improvement. There no "free lunch" and its never going to look as good as true 1080i content mind you, but it did get rid of the jaggies, seemed to help a great deal with compression artificats from the source content, and give me an overall pleasing picture. Only downside is that it does appear softer than direct. I went back and forth a few times, direct to switched/upscaled from the 2600, and definately preffer the picture coming through the 2600. It looks more filmlike and covers up the missing information well.
I'm sure not everyone will agree, but hey, I like it, I plan to keep running it that way until I can figure out how to get an HD-DVR from dish WITHOUT paying their 799...

Ahhh ................maybe Ebay... :)
GlocksRock 11-14-05, 09:10 AM I don't have a HDTV yet, but on my 1600 the upconversion from my sattelite receiver's S-Video output to component video doesn't look bad at all. I guess I'll have to wait till I get a new tv before I can really comment on the HDMI upconversion and deinterlacing. Unfortunately I won't be getting a new tv anytime soon. :(
Sominus 11-14-05, 09:44 AM I updated my post (#50) with a little more info. I'm no expert, but I feel like the cause of my results has more to do with materials or build quality rather than a chip. Loosing PQ when merely running a composite signal through is sad. I have a $60 switch box that can handle that. I am going to exchange this 1600 for a new one. wish me luck.
My dvd player has hdmi out. Since the 2600 will not upscale with hdmi input to the reciever, would it be better to output a 480p signal from a dvd player via component to the 2600 then hdmi out to the tv? Would you then get a 1080i signal to the tv?
Ronin_R6 11-14-05, 11:14 AM My dvd player has hdmi out. Since the 2600 will not upscale with hdmi input to the reciever, would it be better to output a 480p signal from a dvd player via component to the 2600 then hdmi out to the tv? Would you then get a 1080i signal to the tv?
Does your DVD upscale to 1080?
If yes then decide which one does a better job of it, if the DVD player use HDMI from it to the AVR, if the AVR then use component to it, and decide what looks better 480i from the DVD or 480p (assuming you have the option of turning on the Progressive scan).
IF the DVD dosnt upscale then yes using component is you only option to get it upscaled to 1080.
renpar61 11-14-05, 12:02 PM I also have another question: does the receiver has zoom/stretch feature through HDMI? My Sony TV doesn't lem me do that when I feed a 1080i signal, but I can stretch an image through my upconverting DVD player. Hopefully I can do the same through the receiver.
Thunder1 11-14-05, 05:37 PM >>Is there any problem going from HDMI from reciver to DVI to Tv? I am going to buy the 2600.<<
I'm no expert, but from what I understand they are the same. A HDMI > DVI cable is what you need or a HDMI cable and a HDMI > DVI end piece to connect to the TV.
I'm looking to get the 2600 as well. It's amazing how everything comes back to ATARI full circle.

Off subject but check out the PVR and Dish forums here at AVS. A lot of people (including myself, only w/ Directv not Dish) were able to talk to customer retention, a higher level up of customer service at the satallite providers and get amazing deals on HD recievers/ DVRs PVRs, installations, promotional free programing, stuff like that.
VisionxOrb 11-14-05, 08:01 PM I think my bro in law got the HD tivo for either 99 or 199 doing that.

I spent 2 weeks talking to multiple account specialists in customer retention, and sent a couple emails to the ceo email that people say gets them good results, and I got nothing out of them for a new DISH HD DVR, not even a $50 account credit. So i finally had to make good on my threat and switch to cable.
I think Dish is trying not to sell the 942 because in a couple months they are going to have to upgrade them to Mpeg4, they would rather I had waited a couple months and they would have given me what they call a "great promotional deal" on their next HD DVR that is Mpeg4 compatable.
/Back on topic.
Do theese Yammis have discrete ir codes for on/off, input, and surround modes? this is really important to me to try and keep things as easy as possible for the wife and kids.
Wood2395 11-14-05, 09:44 PM Ordered my 2600 tonight. Should arrive early next week. I'll let you all know how the video upconversion works for me. It will be upconverting to 720p for my Optoma H79. Now that I can run everything over my HDMI cable, whatever will I do with that expensive 35 ft. component cable I just sheetrocked into the wall?
HDPackfan 11-14-05, 09:55 PM I'm using my Harmony 880 with no problems with the 2600
ae93gti 11-14-05, 10:44 PM Um, just out of interest, and I don't want to start some kind of "mines better thans yours", but anyone compared 2600 with the 4600? Obviously audio only as 4600 does not have all the nice video features.
mattburk 11-15-05, 12:49 AM I just got my 1600 up and running a few hours ago, I still have to read the manual to figure out some little stuff, and do some tweaking, but so far I'm really liking it. I'm very glad I waited to get this instead of getting a HTR-5990.
The 5990 is the same internally as the 1600. The only real difference is cosmetics.
Actually after looking at them it looks as if the 5990 is more along the lines of the 2600, without the fancy remote.
mattburk 11-15-05, 12:58 AM I'm still debating between the htr-5990 and the rxv-2600, because it doesn't look like the latter is available in my city.
They both upscale. What are you talking about in particular?
matt_he 11-15-05, 09:19 AM They both upscale. What are you talking about in particular?
In looking at the specs, I think the 5990 upconverts analog to digital, but doesn't upscale to 720i or 1080i, whereas the 2600 does.
anymouse 11-15-05, 09:34 AM Well, I got my 2600 last week. I'd moved lately and most of my HT gear was in storage. Dug out my Klipsch's. Wow, forgot how much I loved them!
Only have the front speakers going so far but sounds awesome.
Couple of questions if you please...
1. When adjusting volume with set to CBL/SAT which is my HD Tivo hooked up by HDMI. The screen does not show the volume being changed (you know with a bar and digital reference). However, if I set it to something else the volume bar does show on the screen. There is only HDMI hooked up currently. So..what's up? Can I get that volume bar?
2. I had thought that by changing my output to 480i on the Tivo that the Yamaha would upscale it. But...since I am only using HDMI there is no upscaling. The upscaling occurs at the TV. Has anybody out there figured out how to optimally use the 2600 with the HD Tivo?
3. Has anyone figured out the correct setting for using the Yamaha remote on the HD Tivo?
IMHO this is an awesome device. If you need an HDMI switcher your spending a bundle and it's free with the 2600. Upscaling? Shoot, done it several different ways (Buffalo is great!) but the 2600 is just so fine!

I don't have anything else hooked up yet. So you might be right about the analog inputs. Kinda sucks though. I like using the reference the bar gives me.

renlopez 11-15-05, 12:24 PM I'm trying to decide between the 1600 and 2600. The biggest difference I see is that the 2600 has upconversion to 720/1080 and the 1600 only has 480p deinterlacing.
Since the Display has to scale to it's native resolution, would it really matter whether it receives an upconverted signal or not?
This would would sway my decision either way. I guess the probable answer to question is that it would depend on the quality of the scaler built into the display.
I'm planning on getting a Panny 50PHD8UK with HDMI. Anybody have experience with this plasma and the 2600/1600?

Good call. I read part of the manual on the 5990 it states that it converts all 480i to 480p, that is what it calls upconversion. See page 81-83 of the manual.

Ronin_R6 11-15-05, 10:31 PM The 2600 wont upscale your cable if you hook it with HDMI. you will need to also run an analog cable from the STB to the reciever for your non HD channels.

Grubert 11-16-05, 02:59 AM Has anyone tried 720p via component in and HDMI out? This would be useful, for example, if you are going to buy an X360, which doesn't have HDMI or DVI out, and don't want to run component cables to the display.

yes
garykagan 11-16-05, 10:23 AM That makes no sense. Shouldn't the HDMI from the cable box through HDMI of the receiver pass through with no scaling? Why would you have to downgrade the output of the cable box to component?
HDMI -> HDMI -> HDMI should work with no scaling.
Wouldn't you agree?
Hook the cable box directly to the plasma HDMI - HDMI.
Is the HDMI active on your cable box?
Gary

Yes this is correct. there "should" be no issues using the HDMI setup for the cable box, in fact this should be the best solution for HD sources.
But if you want to upscale the 480i SD channels there will have to be a second set of cables from the STB to the Reciever that is not digital for the video.
But there are a lot of people reporting problems with the Motorola STBs and HDMI switchers, the Motorola boxes dont like having a repeater in the middle and ususally wont pass the HDCP handshake. The only hope at this point if for Motorola to come up with a firmware update to fix this. Actually I have read a lot of issues with the SA boxes as well, but the HD Tivo people sem to not have as many issues with this.
Maybe someone here has some workarounds for you to get the HDMI working. but if not you may be stuck with component until HDMI switchers become more common and motorola gfets enough complaints.
jqualls 11-16-05, 02:06 PM OK, let me vent some frustration....I've been messing with HT gear for over 35 years and I was beginning to think that I knew at least something about my hobby.....since I already have a Motorola 6412 with HDMI out, and a Philips plasma with HDMI in, my thinking was to buy the 2600, upgrade to a DVD player with HDMI, do the "2 cables in, 1 cable out" thing and be done with it! I think you guys are correct in that there is a potential problem with the "handshake" between the 2600 and the TV....sometimes(not always), when I switch to the HDMI input on the TV, I get a picture for a couple of seconds, then the screen alternates between flashing green and black....could this indicate a "handshake" problem? Can I have any confidence that this is a STB problem and not a defective 2600? Also, when I run auto setup, at the last screen where it tells you that the measurements were successful(p. 34 of the manual), it will not allow me to confirm the settings and "save them"....the GUI is slightly different at this point than what the manual shows.....thanks in advance for all the help....if you could shed a little more light on the potential "handshake" problem with the 6412 I would appreciate that also....once I get past this, I'll work on some of the other questions I've seen posted, like the "volume bar" not displaying on different inputs....Thanks, John

I would guess that it is 100% an issue with the 6412.
there are many reports about the 6412 not working with many different HDMI switchers, and most of the time those same people have HDMI DVD players that work fine without any handshake issues.
There is not anything wrong with the 2600 it just seems that most cable boxes right now dont play nice. Hopefully the next generation of STBs will be better.
whats the best cabling method to feed my mac powerbook into the 2600 to upscale to my plasma?
thanks,

Wood2395 11-16-05, 05:04 PM You have a DVI out on the powerbook, I presume. I'd try a DVI to HDMI cable directly into the HDMI input on the 2600. You'll probably need to make sure you're outputting a standard 720 or 1080 signal.

will try that when my 2600 arrives :)

Are you using the 1600 or the 2600, there is a difference in what the two models will do.
HDPackfan 11-16-05, 08:26 PM the 1600 does not "upscale" at all...just upconverts an analog signal to HDMI. The 2600 "upscales" 480i analog to 720p or 1080i. But it will only "upscale" analog signals not digital.
Wood2395 11-16-05, 10:48 PM Alpina won't need to upscale the computer input, he can select 1280 x 720 output from the laptop. It merely needs to pass through to the hdmi output to the monitor.
HDPackfan 11-16-05, 11:11 PM I guess I got confused when he said upscale to his plasma. I think you're right and that he meant upconvert to HDMI

This is the same conclusion I have come to with my HD Tivo. I am not sure why but when you use HDMI all the analog outputs shut down.
Truth is that every single test I read when DVI first came out indicated that there was not really any noticeable difference between it and component.
I know that many will disagree with that. The really plus side when using the HD Tivo is that you can simply hit the up arrow and switch back and forth from 720p and 480i output. That let's the 2600 take care of business on the SD stuff.
There is the price to pay of having to use component but I think it's well worth it IMHO.

S1DIMMER....When I did exactly as you suggest, I first thought that everything was O.K.....then I thought I saw a very slight "jitter" or "flicker in the picture(42" Philips plasma)....it was so slight that I got my wife to take a look and see if she saw what I saw.....she agreed that it was there, so I've gone back to my "old" way of doing things.....HDMI out from 6412 to TV, Component out from DVD to TV. Note: I had no PQ problems with Component in from DVD, output from the 2600 to TV via HDMI, but with only 1 HDMI input on my TV, I wanted to use that for the 6412.....even though this defeats one of the main reasons for me buying this 2600 (HDMI switching), I'll just have to be content to wait for Motorola to either fix the problem or wait for the next generation STB....on a positive note, my Harmony 659 remote works great with the 2600.....John

S1DIMMER 11-17-05, 01:57 PM I've got a Harmony 880 - great remote. I'm just trying to get all my equipment settled and working correctly. Mostly my HTPC which should be done and working after this weekend. I haven't decided on my receiver yet. The Yamaha RX-V2600 is in the lead I think. There's also the Denon AVR-3806, and maybe the Onkyo TX-SR803.

anymouse....the initial download from Harmony gave me the following functions: on;off;volume up and down.....when I select the receiver under "devices" I get most of the DSP modes, some are functional, some are not(not a big deal to me)...I still need to determine if I can switch inputs on the receiver between DVD and CAB/SAT.....may have to customize a couple of buttons for that....I'll keep tweaking it as I have time.....John
Grubert 11-18-05, 09:50 AM You still can't use Presence and Surround back channels at the same time (not even with an outboard stereo power amplifier), can you?
dookie1 11-18-05, 10:35 AM been playing with my newly arrived 2600 for a day or so now...
display is a sanyo Z4 projector on a 106" graywolf via 720p HDMI.
speakers are deftech 2006/2300/1.2x via canare 2x14ga biwire in-wall and 1st-class termination (ok, class 1.5...not wbt).
sources are samsung hd951 DVD (DCDi scaler outputting 720p HDMI) and SA 3250HD cable box...
the 2600 doesn't like digital video from the cable box via DVI-HDMI cable: i see the image flicker onto the screen almost to quickly too register about once every 10sec...any ideas?, so it's using component. initially i had the cable box set to 720p, period. HD looked great but the box's scaler wasn't helping SD, so i reenabled all available resolutions and let the box output the native signal for the 2600 to work on (confirmed by 2600 'signal info' GUI). the improvement was significant. you can see the interpolation, but it just softens the image a little instead of creating jaggies. HDMI DVD is beautiful. GUI definitely displays on HDMI.
i ran the auto calibration and was quite suprised by the accuracy of the results i could verify. glad to see all my DIY wiring was right the first time! the three 8" integral subs across the front work surprisingly well.

S1DIMMER 11-18-05, 10:53 AM Anyone have any comments on sound quality of the RX-V2600? I'm looking to purchase one very soon but want to be sure it sounds good compared to lets say a Denon AVR-3806? I don't think any of my local stores have either of these setup, let alone in stock. I don't have great speakers and they're going to have to stick around for a while longer. Don't laugh but my speakers are an old Sony HTIB set. Two floorstanding front towers - wood not plastic, the center channel and rear surrounds are smallish plastic case speakers. My sub is a 10" downward firing JBL. All are I'd say about 10 years old. I know they aren't great but they work. Before I pull the trigger on this receiver I just want to be sure sound quality is decent. Mostly I'd be watching movies but at times I'd be listening to my MP3 collection via my HTPC's optical out.

No you can not.
anymouse 11-18-05, 12:02 PM Well, I pulled the trigger on a Harmony 880. Should receive it Monday. Thanks for the feedback.
HDMI is flawless with the Tivo HD.
As regards sound quality, I'd have to say the sound is fantastic. I have Klipsch all around starting with Forte II's in the front to THX side surround, etc etc. It's just freakin' remarkable! I'm not just talking DVD's; I'm talking CSI! It's amazing how much I've been missin' (lol!)
S1DIMMER 11-18-05, 12:38 PM anymouse - I think you'll be happy with the 880. I haven't used mine a whole lot yet but it's damn powerful. I wouldn't believe the 45 minutes setup time. It does take some tweaking to get it just right but when you get there it's fantastic.
Thanks for the SQ review. I really want to get the RX-V2600 soon but I'm shopping around for a good price. Best price I've found is out of stock and they can't confirm when it will be in. Anyone have any hot deals send me a PM. Thanks.

S1DIMMER....I don't have an ideal speaker set-up either....Bose stacked cubes for fronts, Bose VCS-10 center, Bose 21 bookshelfs for rears and a Cambridge Soundworks 8" powered sub....looking to upgrade as soon as I recover from buying the 2600....I have significant hearing loss in my right ear and so dialogue is a problem for me.....the 2600 has made a significant difference in clarity, which has helped with the dialogue.....only had time so far to watch/listen to Eagles Farewell Tour One a couple of times......this receiver is definately overkill for my 14'X14' room with my current speakers.....I'm using digital coax from my DVD and Optical digital from my STB.....I think what I've heard so far sounds great....John
S1DIMMER 11-18-05, 04:40 PM Thanks John - my current receiver can have a tendency to muffle the center channel so dialog isn't alway clear. It's not terrible but could be better. I'm looking forward to getting the Yamaha. I've got a decent price, not the cheapest I've seen online but it's from a good vendor and has a 5 year warranty. I just might go that route.
Warpdrv 11-18-05, 05:28 PM the 1600 does not "upscale" at all...just upconverts an analog signal to HDMI. The 2600 "upscales" 480i analog to 720p or 1080i. But it will only "upscale" analog signals not digital.
So does this mean the 1600 is more likely to do a "pass through" on a signal, without trying to upconvert it... then there would be less of a chance that it would have a handshake issue... ?
Just a thought.. any ideas...?

Neither the 1600 nor the 2600 do any upconversion when you have HDMI in/HDMI out.
I think that they would probably behave the same in regards to HDMI in/out. Both essentially do a pass through.

Not so sure how the 2600 will handle 1080p from PS3. Everything else looks like it will work.
Warpdrv 11-18-05, 06:11 PM they aren't even making the PS3 for another year from now....
I personally wouln't rest all my hopes on a year away product.... :)
HDPackfan 11-18-05, 06:13 PM I think they should work fine. However, I am not sure about the game boxes.
As to upscaling to 720p or 1081, the manual says that the GUI display becomes grayed out when:
1. Conversion is set to off;
2. If the selected HDMI upscaling setting is not supported by the HDMI component connected to the HDMI out of the 2600 (ie an EDTV or an SD TV);
3. If the resolution of the analog video signals being input is either 1080i or 720p;
4. If the selected HDMI upscaling setting is lower than the resolution of the analog video signal being input (ie apparently you can't down res a 720p signal into 480i)
The manual goes on to say that; "Unconventional signals (such as those ouput from a game console etc.) input at the composite video, s-video or component video cannot be converted even if conversion is set to On."
(I have not tried this but I would guess this would mean that it cannot be converted to HDMI and cannot, therefore, be sent out of the 2600 through the HDMI---this is just my guess as I don't have a game console) I would think it would still pass through the signals via component to your projector though
Next week, we'll know if a xbox360 connected to this receiver (component) can be sent out through HDMI to the display.
Does anybody know if the answer is YES?
MarkMSM 11-18-05, 06:35 PM Hi just got my RXV-2600 home.
As soon as I plugged my HDMI out in to the back of my TV, I get the following message:
HDMI ERROR
HDCP ERROR
As soon as I disconnect, the message goes away. Seems like some handshake problem with my TV.
I have a Panasonic PT-50DL54, 50" DLP Set. When I connected my Pace HD Cable box to the TV's HDMI input, it worked fine.
Anyone else seen this?
EDIT BELOW
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think I figured this out. I think the reason the handshake failed was because my TV was already on when I plugged in the HDMI cable. Once I powered off the TV and Receiver and powered them both back on... VIOLA! no more error. Whew.

As long as the xbox sends a standard video signal, then it will pass through to HDMI.
If the xbox sends 720p or 1080i, then scaling will be disabled on the 2600 and the signal will convert the signal to HDMI format.
If the xbox sends 480i or 480p, then you will have the option of upscaling to 720p/1080i for HDMI output.
Does anybody use this receiver with the pana ae900 projector (HDMI)? Any problem?
Does anybody use this receiver with the Marantz dv-6600 dvd player (HDMI)? Any problem?
Wood2395 11-19-05, 09:02 PM I just received my 2600 yesterday. Some observation:
It's the sexyest receiver I've ever seen
Each individual video input requires independent setup, for HDMI, Upscaling, etc.
Once it's set up, it works like a charm.
All HDMI input is only pass through, so if your source is 480p, it's best to import it via component vs HDMI so you can upscale it.
all component input is upscaled per your preference to 720p or 1080i. Or you can leave it 480 if your video scaler does a better job than the yammy.
I don't notice a difference importing 720p via my Samsung DVD upscaling player out to my Optoma H79 vs. 480p output upscaled to 720p by the yammy to the PJ vs. 480p output via the Samsung passed through and upscaled by the optoma H79. They all look pretty good at 110 inches diagonal for 16:9 source material. For simplicity of switching, I'm sending everything into the 2600, upscaling analog component sources to 720p and sending everything out via the one HDMI output. I have my Motorola cable box using the component output to the Yammy, as its HDMI port doesn't play well with repeaters. My OTA tuner is DVI to HDMI into Yammy and my DVD is HDMI to HDMI in to yammy.
480i input to Yammy is soft and fuzzy output to higher def, so a progressive scan player and HD cable box are worth while.
Auto setup with the included microphone is incredible. It determines the wire length to each speaker as well as the physical distance to center point and dB variation for each channel. It takes less than a minute to complete. It sounds great.
Quit reading this review and go order an RX-V2600!
jandawil 11-19-05, 09:33 PM Hey Wood,
Congrats on getting what seem to be an awesome receiver. How is standard def. TV using the Yammi to upscale?? Any improvement over running it straight from your cable box into your H79 or you old receiver depending how you ran it before?? I've heard there is about a 20% to 30% increase in PQ, but that could be subjective. Some say its better to feed your PJ a basic 480 signal and let the onboard scaler do the work. Any thoughts??
Fishhooks 11-20-05, 05:07 AM Looks as if the set-up procedures and manual are a lot more realistic than the Denon 3806.
Lot's of complaints over on the other thread!

I don't really notice much difference with SD cable directly into the Optoma via HDMI or component, or into the Yamaha first via component. As mentioned, I can't input via HDMI to the 2600 then out to the PJ, a drawback with the Motorola boxes not supporting repeater function. Overall, SD video is not nearly as sharp as DVD or HD content, but there is certainly no PQ penalty incurred by running through the 2600 and upscaling to 720p out to the PJ. I've chosen this route for output simplicity. I have run both HDMI and component cables in wall to the projector, but it's much easier to switch sources on the 2600 and always leave the PJ on the digital input (DVI with an HDMI adapter).
Hope this helps. Again, this is an awesome receiver. Go get one.
jandawil 11-20-05, 09:18 AM I don't really notice much difference with SD cable directly into the Optoma via HDMI or component, or into the Yamaha first via component.
I am assuming because the H79 onboard scaler pretty much does the same thing as the 2600. Oh well, this may somewhat negate the advantages of the 2600, but I'm still going to get it.
Thanks

Does adding presence speakers make much of a difference in the sound experience with the 2600? If yes which ones would be good?
Grubert 11-20-05, 03:33 PM Does adding presence speakers make much of a difference in the sound experience with the 2600?
If you use a projector, yes it does. It 'lifts' the central channel so that it appears to come from behind the screen.
If yes which ones would be good?
Just good satellites would do. I have a pair of secondhand JM Lab Sib speakers (the rest is JM Lab Chorus).
Wood2395 11-21-05, 08:04 AM Just picked up the audiovox connect and play XM antenna last night. Signed up for a year membership and am enjoying XM radio in the media room. The antenna is sitting on top of my 2600, in my attic media room, with no windows, and I'm getting a very strong antenna signal. I thought I was going to have to run it through the wall to the uninsulated attic space near a vent to get a signal, but not the case.

[QUOTE=Grubert]If you use a projector, yes it does. It 'lifts' the central channel so that it appears to come from behind the screen.
If one has a projector, is it better to have precense or surround back speakers?
(I'm very confused about these presence speakers and the selection between presence and surround back)
Wood2395 11-21-05, 12:06 PM You can actually hook up both, but can only use one or the other at a given time. I set mine up with just 7.1 but my front's have directional tweeters that I can direct to my listening position. It seems to do pretty well without the "dialogue lift" feature that the presence speakers would give. If you want to try both, do so before you install your wiring and see which you like best, or wire for both and use them interchangably.

Dont forget that the yammi will display the OSD over HDMI.
Does this include OSD of changes made during normal use [not GUI-setup] ?
For example, does it show OSD when I change volume and stuff like that ?
My current reciever will not show this via HDMI to my Z4 PJ, and it's a pain in the a**.
anymouse 11-21-05, 03:02 PM What needs to be understood is that the whole point of HDMI, I mean the reason they invented it was so that you COULDN"T do anything to the signal. This is how they feel they can prevent unauthorized copying. HDMI is only and always pass through when it is two HDMI devices hooked up together. By using component you are allowed to add that OSD you are looking for. Not (alas) through HDMI.
Dos centavos por usted!

Well - my source is not HDMI - only from the receiver to PJ it's HDMI.
So OSD [e.g volume up/down] will be displayed when using RX-V2600,right ?
Wood2395 11-21-05, 05:36 PM I have been unable to get volume changes onscreen with any output from the 2600, but I haven't specifically fiddled with it yet to find out why.

John,
I'd try both ways and see which does a better job. Depending on the scaler in your display, the 2600 may look better. Besides, you'll have the convenience of video and audio switching for each source with only one remote command, which makes programming simpler and is likely more reliable. Of course, if the video doesn't look as good, that trumps simple set-up, in my opinion.
Beware that switching digital sources with this receiver may be problematic at best. My guess is it works ok with the latest gear: HDMI dvd players, monitors, etc.
After two calls to Yamaha tech support, I have to return this unit  Too bad because I really hoped and wanted it to work, but it just won't.
Configuration is this:
Display: Fujitsu P50XHA10US plasma (DVI input)
Cable STB: Moto DCT6412 HD-DVR (HDMI or component)
Computer: (DVI output)
Various other gear with component output
The Cable STB won't work at all via HDMI - you can read countless posts about this problem.
The showstopper: any component input with a HD signal (1080i or 720p) is output at 480p to the plasma. Tech support claims this is because of HDCP handshake issue between the receiver and the plasma (though the plasma is HDCP compliant). So, the receiver is making a decision that it should down-res the input even though the original input has no copy protection at all (being component).
Interestingly, a computer outputing 768p is passed just fine.
So my hope is that everyone will refuse to buy any of the current crop of "HDMI Switching Receivers", and return the ones they have with a note telling the industry where to stick their HDCP [as if this would ever happen].

The more and more I read about all this it seems like the best bet is pick up the RX-V2500 for $600 and run video straight to my PJ and let it do the scaling. Are there any advantages of the 2600 over the 2500 besides the seemingly flawed HDMI switching??? I just may end up saving myself $500. Can anyone recommend a good 2 channel amp I can pickup for $500?
Wood2395 11-21-05, 06:59 PM HDMI switching works fine for me, with the exception of my Motorolla Cable Box, which every HDMI switching receiver has problems with - it's the Motorolla not supporting switches. If you were using a DirecTV box, or a different cable box, you probably won't have a problem. You can still use the Component in from the cable box and in fact upscale the cable channels to high def prior to sending to your display. This gives more options to get the best picture or to only run one (HDMI) cable to your display.
anymouse 11-21-05, 07:02 PM Sure sorry to hear you guys having all these problems. I'm not having them so can only empathize. I am saying this because you guys are badmouthing the Yammy when it sounds like you have cable stb and plasma issues.
Sorry...My HD Tivo works flawlessly with the Yammy on HDMI and the upscaling is great on the analog.
By the way, is your computer DVI HDCP compliant? I know most aren't.
The real culprit in my book is most definitely the whole HDCP issue.
If it solves the plasma problem by running the DVI/HDMI direct then what the heck, go for it. The other features are well worth the price but hey that's just MHO.

George Cifranci 11-21-05, 07:32 PM I just got my Yamaha RX-V2600 today and I am too having the HDCP issue.
I had my Time Warner Scientific Atlanta 8300HD DVR hooked directly to my 60" Sony SXRD HDTV and it worked fine. When I got the Yamaha 2600, I plugged the HDMI from the cable box into the receiver and then hooked up an HDMI to the output of the receiver to the TV. I am seeing a message (from I assume the cable box) that is saying that the TV isn't HDCP compliant. I tried to power cycle the cable box, TV and receiver to no avail. Worse comes to worse I can just plug the cable box into the 2nd HDMI port on my TV but it would have been nice to do all the switching from the Receiver.

Or maybe they should just quit or refuse to pay for any cable TV, that is provided with these offending cables boxes. Seeing as how it IS a cable box problem, and not so much a problem with the receiver itself.
Naaaaaa, that will never happen...
No one would want to risk not having their cable TV, even though the fault lies with the equipment they give you....

Just picked up a 2600 over the weekend.....WOW. But I must sadly report as well that using the DTC6412's HDMI output through the Yammy to my Samsung DLP RPTV produces the reported "flashing green and black screen as well. So I'm currently running component from the STB to the Yammy, then out through HDMI to the TV. And to be honest, I can't really tell the different when watching HD content. I can very happily say, I can see improved PQ when watching SD content, and that in itself is worth the price of admission to the game.

So my hope is that everyone will refuse to buy any of the current crop of "HDMI Switching Receivers", and return the ones they have with a note telling the industry where to stick their HDCP [as if this would ever happen].
tmmort....I've just decided to change my configuration and run component from the 6412 into the 2600 and out thru HDMI.....but you're saying that the 2600 will down res the 1080i to 480p....was this an issue with just your plasma or is this likely to happen with my 42" Philips plasma also?....John
Wood2395 11-22-05, 10:27 AM You should have no problem doing this, John. You will be able to upscale the 480p signal to 720p or 1080i and you will pass through your high def channels. Unless you plasma monitor only accepts 480i input, which I cannot believe.

Yes you will need to run component to get around limitation of the 6412. However, last night I did get the 1080i signal to pass through the amp's HDMI output at 1080i :D
The problem was with a certain setting in the plasma. For those who have this plasma (P50XHA10US), here's the menu setting:
Other -> Input Terminal -> DVI Input
must be set to "DVI2" (vs. other setting of "DVI1"). In the manual it only says,
for DVI1: "Used when connecting to a PC" and
for DVI2: "Used when connecting to a DVD player or digital tuner"
My guess is that "DVI2" setting turns on HDCP handshake. A PC video source seems work fine with either settting.
S1DIMMER 11-23-05, 10:20 AM I plan on picking up a RX-V2600 soon. I'd like to know if I can run a 5.1 speaker system with it or do I have to go 7.1? For right now I have to keep my current speakers which are 5.1. Would I be missing anything by not hooking up additional speakers? Is there a way to set the sound to 5.1? Thanks.

Of course, you can use as few speakers as you like. All current formats are supported, including all the 5.1 dolby modes. It will create 5 channel audio from stereo or mono source as well. The more I mess with it, the more I'm loving it.
I still can't figure out how to get any onscreen information, except in the GUI setup mode. Has anyone been able to get an onscreen display of volume, source, or surround mode?
S1DIMMER 11-23-05, 01:12 PM Thanks Wood - I've been looking online for a good price and found a few from somewhat shady dealers. Also have a decent price from Tweeter with a 5 year warranty. I know Tweeter is an authorized dealer but the shady vendors also claim full manufacturer’s warranty. I guess if a deal is too good to be true it probably is.

Wood....I haven't figured how to do any of this either....I'm going home after work and tweak my configuration one more time....went into the menu last night and reassigned the DVR/VCR2 coax input to the Cab/Sat input so I can use coax audio instead of optical....need to run a cable and see if I did it right....happy holidays...John
Grubert 11-23-05, 02:39 PM Well I am doing just that with the original XBOX so I hope it works on the 360 as well.
But have you tried 720p in? Many people will probably like to run component 720p into the 2600 and 720p out to the display device via HDMI.

The onscreen volume and source comes up for me, however, I have an older TV hooked up via composite video.

Seems rediculous that people are having problems with this. You would think this would be #1 on the list of things for Yamaha to test.

Maybe it's just me but why do you cable guys want to blame Yamaha? I mean the problem is your cable box. Your cable box sucks, okay? It's not just the Yamaha that the cable box has problems with. It's just about any HDMI switcher.
So, relax. Call your cable guys. If they can't resolve it, fire them and get rid of their junk.
Get yourself something that works. D works and no I don't work for them or own stock or anything else. Just appreciate things working properly.
Does anybody know where to buy this receiver in Germany (web)?
blctech 11-25-05, 05:22 PM I have a Yamaha RX-V2600. Concerning the Componet I/P on the Yamaha 2600, does anyone know exactly what the unit does? Does it just do a straight Interlace - Progressive conversion without any kind of scheme or can it also handle 2-3 puldown for Movie sources. I output the Component Out at the moment but also wonder if the HDMI output would be different.

The problems people have been describing very well may be due to the cable boxes, but I have yet to hear anything that other than "your cable box sucks" to prove that. Companys like Scientific Atlanta and Motorola aren't necessary small companies either. So if the problem is affecting other AVR's why hasn't the exact issue been published yet?
Other than D.TV\Tivo users, any cable users have this working?
So if the problem is affecting other AVR's why hasn't the exact issue been published yet?
It has, you just need to read a lot more around the forums here.
Some SA cable boxes with a certain firmware are a big problem, yet when they have a different firmware than the others, it's not so much a problem. One big part of problem is, it's the cable companies that need to send a firmware update down to them via the cable. And most of them are not doing it, or don't even know about it. And the cable box manufacturer will not upgrade the firmware, and if you call them, they will tell you it's the cable companies that need to do it.
Wood2395 11-26-05, 04:11 PM Regarding the Motorola cable boxes, one forum member contacted Moto directly and was told that as a policy, Motorola boxes DO NOT support switches. This has absolutely nothing to do with the Yammy and everything to do with Motorola's implementation of HDCP, which is BS but should not keep you from buying this great receiver. The exact same problem exists with the Denon 3806 as reported in that thread. It will also exist with everyone else's HDMI switching receivers when they are available. It will exist until Motorolla and Scientific Atlanta, etc, understand what they're really required to do to protect copyrights and still allow the sorry bastards paying for the intellectual property to actually use it.

What are you trying to upconvert with it? It certainly is not going to upconvert just the signal of the plasma itself.

I have a DVD player and an SFA 8300HD cable box, both connected to the 2600 via component inputs. So basically I am trying to upconvert a 480p component picture up to 720p HDMI. The problem is that the HDMI upconversion menu options on the 2600 are all grayed out.
mgbarton 11-26-05, 09:07 PM anymouse and/or other HD DirectTiVo users:
1) Can the DirecTiVo remote control the mute/volume on the 2600?
2) For HD content, using the HDMI connector to the 2600, then HDMI to the TV sounds like the way to go. However, any SD content will be upscaled by the HD DirecTiVo to whatever resolution you've got the HD TiVo set for, then passed through by the 2600 - unmodified - to the TV. How have you got things wired so the 2600 can do the upscaling and de-interlacing? Are you also running a component or S-Video cable to another input?
3) Is the 2600 really doing a better job with upscaling than the HD DirectTiVo? IN my case the monitor supports 720p, so I've always let the TiVo do the upscaling. Is it worth getting the 2600 involved?
Thanks,
Michael

egasesiw,
Make sure you're in the video menu for the input you're concerned with, not turned to tuner, xm, or a different video input for instance. Each input is configured separately, even though the menus are identical. Therefore, if you're tuned to an input that is not receiving an analog video source, the upconvert to 720p or 1080i options will be greyed out. As long as you have Conversion and I/P set to on, and you have analog coming in at less than 1080i, you should be able to choose to upconvert. If your source is DVI, or already 1080, the upconvert options will be greyed out. You will have to set this independently for each analog input (DVD, cable, x-box, vcr).

1. Mos Def
2. Yes, that's optimum for HD. To have your 2600 upscale you have to use component as HDCP does not allow any type of conversion over HDMI.
3 I don't have a final answer yet. I know that with by Mitsu DLP that it's more satisfying in some cases to allow the TV to do the upscaling because it uses the whole screen whereas the SD through HDMI from Tivo has the side bars and won't allow a proper zoom. I haven't had time to establish whether I like the upscaling better from the 2600 but I suspect I will like it better.

anymouse 11-27-05, 11:19 AM Are you outputting 480i or 480p? Some DVD players give you a choice. If you are outputting 480p there may not be any options. Also, I know that some DVD players and DVDs use heavy copy protection schemes. Don't know if that has any affect.

dpapagolos 11-27-05, 11:32 AM Hello,
I am about to pull the trigger on this and realized there may be a potential problem. Can I use an HDMI to DVI adapter to output the video from the receiver? Also how does the scaling work with the HDTIVO I have. Will i need to change the video output of the tivo when switching between sd and hd?
Thank you all.

My monitor's native resolution is 1,366x768 and so it can display native 720P. My DVD output is 480P so there should be room for upconversion. Also tried upconverting 480I from my cable box and from a VCR and and still all HDMI options are greyed out, so I don't think copy protection is the issue.
Also, I don't know how to tell what resolution my monitor (Panny TH-50PHD7UY) is actually receiving through HDMI.
Any ideas?

DVI-D and HDMI should be hardware compatible (look for the ecoustics post by googling: dvi hdmi compatible)
If you are not using your TV speakers, then just get a simple DVI-D to HDMI cable at Radio Shack to connect your receiver to your TV.

Under the setup routine for your DVD Player on the 2600, make sure you have the following setup selected:
Input Select ---> DVD ---> I/O Assignment ---> HDMI ---> None
If this is so, I have no idea, but you may have a defective unit. I would first try a different component plugged into the same component input to make sure it's not a DVD player issue.

Tried this too. I guess it's a defective unit. Bugger :(
Thanks for the help
One last thing I would try, is another HDMI cable to the plasma. Before condemning the receiver defective. Because according to Yamaha the scaling menu is also supposed to be disabled/greyed out, if the TV itself is not capable of either a 720p or 1080i input. But yours is, so it should not be the TV set, but it might be possible that the cable could maybe cause this.
gangrene 11-29-05, 01:36 AM First, here's my setup:
Sanyo PLV-Z3
Yamaha RX-V2600
OPPO DVD Player conencted via DVI\HDMI convertor cable
Motorola HD PVR Cable Box (Comcast) via Component
Component Video\Optical Digital Audio 3 Way Switchbox (From Ebay) with
XBOX/PS2/Gamecube
XBOX 360 Via Component (coming Soon... hopefully.)
Anyway, for those having trouble with on-screen display of volume, etc. mine does it on my consoles, but definitely not on my DVD player. I think it has to do with the DVD going over HDMI, and the Copy-Protection of HDMI doesn't allow the signal to be messed with, even to overlay menu information (this is _only_ my educated guess.) I can't remember what happens with the cable box.
The cable box is the problem (for all you guys thinking it is a flaw with the receiver.) It is a problem with other receivers, and even with other HDTV's. I had to switch to Component on this one, which made me very crabby, and forced me to buy the switchbox, since I was down another Component Input.
I have succesfully displayed a PC through the receiver over DVI/HDMI. The only issue seems to be the autosynching. The projector keeps chopping off the first 10-20 pixels on the left side when the PC does a mode switch. It figures it out the first time (when it's first switched to PC input) but if I start a game, then go back to the desktop, it is shifted over. This could be a problem with my projector, and not the receiver. I'm not sure how to figure which is goofing it up.
I actually started with the HTR-5990 from Best Buy, but decided I really needed the scaler (besides the fact that it wouldn't stay on if I didn't leaving running all night). I don't know why, but the 5990 sounded better to me, even though they are supposed to be identical in the amp section. The 5990's menu is definitely inferior. All the options are the same, but the 2600 looks like a modern graphical display (all the input setup is ridiculously counter-intuitive). The 5990 looks like my Denon from 1993. Bleagh! All cruddy white text on a grey screen!
I have found that the scaler mangles certain output, particularly from the PS2. I've been playing Guitar Hero (which I highly recommend to everyone who has a PS2 and 5 fingers on their non-dominant hand,) the white text on some screens is nearly unreadable sometimes. It is strange, because all of hte "important" text in the middle of the screen is just fine. It just seems to make a blurry blob of the "continue" menu item in the lower left-hand corner.
If anyone has specific questions, just post them here, and I'll see if I can help answering them.
Mike
i know people don't really buy this receiver for its amp but how good is the amp on the 2600 really?
its fair enough to say that most people who buy this amp will get an out of the box surround sound speaker set but what about those that want a high end speaker set at front with surround rears? what i'm really asking is whether an amp like this will (1) adequately drive a pair of b&w 705's with matching centers and (2) will it do them justice. rear is likely to be made up of inceiling speakers so i'm not too worried about them.

Wakefield103 11-29-05, 05:24 AM Hi.
This may be a stupid question, but can you view video from one source and listen to audio from another source at the same time on the 2600?
Thanks,
Wakefield
S1DIMMER 11-29-05, 07:08 AM gangrene- you said the 5990 sounded better to you than the 2600. Any opinions on the sound of the 2600 in terms of both music and movies? I plan on mainly using the 2600 for movies and my MP3 collection. I'm not an audiophile and I don't have very good speakers so it probably would be fine for me. Just curious as to the clarity and separation of sound effects with the 2600?
Dr. Ed Bravo 11-29-05, 07:55 AM Wakefield,
Yes.
Select the video source first, then switch to the audio source. This will not work if your audio source is plugged into a video source connection.
Hammer65 11-29-05, 08:02 AM I don't have high end speakers so I can't testify to those. I have 4 AS-B1 with AS-C1 center and Dayton 10" sub. I have the 1600 which is suppose to be the same minus the video upscaling. It sounds very good to me, but I don't have a very critical ear. One question I have in on ventilation. The manual calls for 20cm on the sides and 30cm on the top. I don't want to fry the thing so I currently have it on the top of my rack, but that exposes it to dust. Do amps like this really require that much clearance in order to keep from overheating?
gangrene 11-29-05, 09:21 AM S1DIMMER: I'm not the audiophile that I thought I was. I currently have this going through a set of Boston Acoustics A120's for fronts, some crappy JBL Center (which will be replaced by another A120 once the hard-fought Ebay winnings from last night arrive :) ) Boston HD9's for Rears, and Boston VRS Dipoles for Surrounds.
To me, the 5990 "popped" more. It could be that I turned it up more, but I'm not sure. (You will see how really uneducated I am on volume knobs in a second :) ) With the 5990, I could turn it up to -20dB and my wife (upstairs) would get mad at me. With the 2600, -20dB feels "much" quieter, but I still have that number in my head, and fear for the yelling to start. I'm going to have to turn it way up when she is gone and see what happens.
I came from a Kenwood VR-5090, and the 2600 is definitely better in every way. I don't have to turn it down to hear dialogue that is drowned out by explosions and whatnot. Sounds don't seem to be coming from a particular speaker any more, instead they are coming from the "right place".
Another thing, I must have played Guitar Hero just a little bit too loud one night, for I have blown out the foam on my Right A120 (another reason for seeking out another pair on Ebay.) It only buzzes at the moment, but I will be able to give a better review once my system is "whole" again.
If you guys can give me a post or two of a "good" review, I can try to do whatever that person did. I just don't really know what to tell you other than "I knows what I likes", and I really like what I've got. (Enough to put up with the wife bitchin' about how much that new "toy" cost and how I'm stealing from my daughters college fund.)

I'm driving 4 ohm Polk LC265i's for fronts and center, 7 channels total with 6 ohm surround speakers with no difficulty. The Polks sound fantastic with this receiver for both music and cinema. I eventually plan to upgrade to matching polk surrounds which will also be 4 ohms, and at that point I may add external amps for the front channels and biamp the rears. I will say this receiver runs hot, I keep it out of a cabinet on a tabletop. It sounds great.
jqualls 11-29-05, 10:43 AM O.K....after 3 weeks with the 2600, here's where I'm at....my other gear is standard issue Sony DVD(NS 720?), the notorious Motorola DCT 6412 HD DVR cable box, Bose cubes, VCS-10 center, Bose 21 bookshelves for rears, and a Cambridge Soundworks 8" powered sub(speakers to be soon replaced with Aperion Intimus set up)....configured as follows: DVD and STB into the 2600 with Component, out to 42" Philips plasma via HDMI.....component upconversion set to "on", HDMI upconversion set to "on, component I/P set to "off"....with this configuration, here's what works/doesn't work...."volume bar" displays on all channels EXCEPT HD channels(go figure?)...."volume bar" displays for DVD's....selected input displays for a couple of seconds whenever you change inputs, EXCEPT when switching from Cab/Sat to DVD and back, then just flashes on the screen so fast you can hardly read it(maybe this is because both "inputs" are being "output" thru HDMI??)....it's hard to judge the sound with the speakers that I have, but I must say that the improvement from my Technics 100wpc receiver is substantial....I think I'm going to love this receiver when I get new speakers(are you listening, Santa?).....In conclusion, I am FIRMLY convinced that without the issues inherent with the Motorola STB, this receiver has been a great addition to my modest HT....hope some of this helps...John

Is this going to be a problem with the Yamaha RX-V2600 pumping too much power? I haven't ordered the receiver yet but I plan to soon. I'm really hoping I can use my current Sony speakers with it for at least a year.
S1DIMMER 11-29-05, 06:39 PM If you guys can give me a post or two of a "good" review, I can try to do whatever that person did. I just don't really know what to tell you other than "I knows what I likes", and I really like what I've got. (Enough to put up with the wife bitchin' about how much that new "toy" cost and how I'm stealing from my daughters college fund.)
I hear ya man - our wives must be twins. Something about women and not liking loud music, or movies. I like both blasting. I got the same thing about the cost and my daughter's college fund too.
bbrunst 11-29-05, 08:38 PM i know people don't really buy this receiver for its amp but how good is the amp on the 2600 really?
its fair enough to say that most people who buy this amp will get an out of the box surround sound speaker set but what about those that want a high end speaker set at front with surround rears? what i'm really asking is whether an amp like this will (1) adequately drive a pair of b&w 705's with matching centers and (2) will it do them justice. rear is likely to be made up of inceiling speakers so i'm not too worried about them.
i have the 2600 on order and bought it for its state of the art features not paying much attention to the amp other than its 130watts * 7 @ 8ohms rating.
what does everyone think? anyone driving high end speakers with this amp and if so, how does it go?
cheers,
julie
No I don't think its fair to say that most people who buy this amp will get an out of the box surround speaker set. Some do but to say most, may be a stretch.
My daughter and son in laws system has B&W 703's and HTM7 center and the surrounds are DS6 S3's for now and a SVS PB12 plus 2 Sub
He is using the RS V2500 for his setup and it is up to the task... the HTR is 25 X 12 with 9ft ceiling and a Sony HS 51 projector. The 2600 would be better yet for this setup but not worth changing at this time.. If you went to 803's I would go to separates and they may sound better on this system...but the Yamaha has no problem driving this setup and us out of the room if we want.. :)
VisionxOrb 11-29-05, 11:34 PM Finally got my digital video cables today. First, it switches my HTPC 100% perfectly fine. connected to a 2003 hitachi 50v500 ( LCD projection ). Scaling also cleans up the picture from my dvds, not night and day but there deffinatly is an improvement. Sound and capabilites are much improved over my rx-v1200. so far im VERY happy.
EDIT: Just watched another movie. this time I robot, and I can say the scaler in my reciver kicks my tvs scalers butt. the picture is much more solid and better textures and colors. much less artifacting/banding too. Before I was testing with LOTR ROTK and well if you ever look at it, its kind of soft to begin with ( i think for artistic reasons )
Were both receivers configured exactly the same? Did you run YPAO to set both of them up? I suspect the only major difference between the sound of these two receivers was the variation in the adjustments between the two.

S1DIMMER 11-30-05, 12:34 PM Ordered my RX-V2600 today. Hope to have it by the end of this week. It's a Christmas present from my wife but hopefully she'll let me hook it up quick and take a test drive to make sure it works of course. Now to spend the next year figuring out what speakers to get. I like the Yamaha NS series which should sound good with the Yamaha receiver. Although they aren't quite small speakers which is what my wife would prefer.

S1DIMMER...my wife pretty much dictates what size speakers I'm allowed to have also.....I guess that' why I've lived the last 10 years with Bose.....I'm just about to order some Aperion Intimus speakers(www.aperion.com).....obviously I can't give you a recommendation yet, but they have been very highly reviewed so I'm gonna give them a try....I'll post my opinion later....John
amerikian 11-30-05, 02:36 PM I recently made the jump to HD TV and figured to upgrade my audio. The sales guy at Ameican TV sold me on the RX-V1600 saying that it up converted to HDMI, which it does. However, not until I took it home did I realize it doesn't up-scale to higher definition. So I went back today and upgraded to the V2600, got it for $1100. Good Price?
I haven't gotten my new TV yet, its coming Saturday. I purchased a Toshiba 1080p HDTV 56". I have Direct TV, no HD subscription. I'm going to see the quality of the picture with the 2600 and HDTV first to see if it is even necessary. But my satelite box only has A/V out and S-video out. So I'll run my S-Video, and I hope that will give me a nice up-scale. Should I get a different box, or will the 2600 hook me up?
But on a different note, I'm not an audiophile. Will the 2600 produce close to the same sound with a 2 channel connection? Or is the Optical Audio going to make a HUGE difference? Anyways, I'm glad to be a member and have learned enough from this thread to upgrade from the 1600 to the 2600. I'll let everyone know how the set up works with the new TV.
Can't wait! 3 more days!

By two channel connection I'm assuming you are talking about left and right analog RCA cables?? Any digital connection be it digital coax or TosLink (fiber) will sound substantially better assuming you have the speakers to show it off. I refuse to listen to my CD's on my old CD player which did not have digital connections. I play them on my DVD player using the Toslink to my Onkyo receiver (Soon to be a 2600 :) ) I even noticed a substantial difference on my old Cerwin Vega DX9 speakers. Once I switched to my Klipsch R5 speakers, I pretty much needed a cigarette after listening to it. HUGE difference!!!!
eyazdchi 11-30-05, 04:53 PM I'm looking to use 7.1 in my main room and 2.0 outdoors in my gazebo. Is it possible to do this with the RX-V2600.
If so, can I run different sound outputs to Zone 2, or am I forced to run the same output to all speakers.
And if not, will the configuration work with either 5.1 or 6.1 in the main room?
Thanks to anyone who might know. :)

You can do it, but not simutaneously. You will wire your 7.1 speakers normally and wire the 2 outside speakers to the Speaker B left and right outputs. You will be able to do 5.1 in the media room and 2.0 simultaneously outside with 2 different sources. The 2600 even includes a nice second zone remote, not RF unfortunately, but you can use IR repeaters.
amerikian 11-30-05, 06:43 PM :D
Thanx for the reply. We did purchase with the 2600 a pair of Polk RTi4 RS speakers and a Polk CTi3 or something like that center channel. Our towers are pretty old, but they have some decent woofers and sound okay. We'll upgrade those one of these days.
Unfortunately, my dvd player only has A/V (red white yellow) outputs, but that's what we get for buying a $30 dvd player! Looks like I'll be upgrading that too.
I do have the TosLink cables, but I was going to return them. Maybe I'll just keep them! Especially if I'll need a cig afterwards.... Must be good!
S1DIMMER 11-30-05, 07:00 PM Amerikian - get the new box and the HD subscription. HDTV is worth it. Standard def TV just doesn't look all that great on HDTV sets. A lot of people are disappointed when they fire up that new HDTV using a standard def signal and see a crappy picture. HDTV is what's meant to be displayed on that new TV of yours. Just wanted to give you a heads up.
From what you've said it seems like none of your equipment will measure up to your new TV and the 2600. The up-scaling in the 2600 could help a little but unless you've got a good quality HD signal going to your TV or a DVD player with at least component output you might be disappointed. I think you've got a great start with both the TV and 2600 - you're on the road to a great HT experience. Just upgrade the DVD player a little - to one with component and optical (toslink) out. Maybe see what deals the satellite company is offering on the HD package and give it a trial at least. Once you experience true HD matched with your new TV and 2600 you'll be really happy. Also you'll want a satellite box that has an optical or coax digital out for sound. I'll assume that if you get the HD package the new box will have one of those connections. Good luck.
With a little luck my 2600 will arrive by the end of the week. I'm wondering if anyone has used the bi-AMP function? I've read the online manual but the information regarding it is pretty vague. They talk about the amp to each section of the speakers as being more efficient etc. and it only sending the high freq. to the tweeters and so on but it doesn't show which terminals should be wired to the hi freq and low freq. portions of the speakers or if there is a way to adjust the hi / low pass filters or crossover points in the amp. Actually my speaker manual for my Boston Acoutic VRM-50's warns against using external crossovers and implies you should run full frequencies to both sets of teminals.
Any insite would be apreciated. I'm waitng with baited breathe for the unit.
plumberdoc 12-01-05, 12:34 AM Appreciate folks sharing their experience. I'm trying to decide 1600 vs 2600.
If the native resolution of my (soon to be) Pan 50PHD8UK plasma is 1366 x 768 and the scan line options are 480i, 480p, 720p, 1080i; do I need upscaling capability in my receiver? Note that the Yamaha 2600 receiver offers more upscaling via component cables than the 1600. Perhaps the plasma upscales the signals so efficiently that I don't need it to be done by either the receiver (for SD channels via my HD motorola STB) or via an upscaling DVD player (like the Neo). I only anticipate these two video components.
Do you think an upscaling receiver is worth it with the Panny and these sources?

I wanna buy the rx v2600 from USA but I will use it in Australia (PAL system) with the following setup:
Panasonic PT-AE900.
Panasonic DMR-EH80 (VCR+HDD+DVD recorder).
SD digital satellite receiver.
Will the rx v2600 work properly or there will be problem because of the NTSC/PAL issue.
Thank you and I really need your advice.

matt_he 12-01-05, 10:21 AM OK. It appears that a lot of you guys are ordering the RX-V2600 online. Where are you getting them? I'm looking for a reputable online dealer that carries this receiver (for a good price, hopefully!). Please send me a pm if you don't want to post the names publicly.
S1DIMMER 12-01-05, 10:43 AM matt_he - it's up to you if you want to buy from an authorized dealer or not. If you go with an authorized dealer you'll pay closer to MSRP. If that doesn't matter you can save some money. I know about the warranty issues but I bought mine from Etronics. Can't discuss price here but so far my order is going smoothly. I ordered yesterday and should receive the item today. I've received order confirmation, and a shipping notification with tracking number and all seems well. I've ordered from Etronics once before with no issues. If you're outside of NY even better for you as I had to pay NY sales tax. Still got a good deal, better than the best price I got by just over $100. Usually if a product like this is going to fail it will be within the first few days and I can return it to Etronics.
I have the Denon 3806 myself and applaud Yamaha for the 2600 unit. It has some great features that beats Denon at their own game -- namely room EQ that actually works, video and digital audio HDMI switching, and OSD via HDMI (if only setup menu only). The Denon might get a nod for a tad better SQ though but everyone's ears and speakers are different so it's a personal issue. One thing I haven't seen is how the Yammy would do with 6 and 4 Ohm speakers. Yamaha does not specifically state ratings in 6 Ohms for this reciever so I'm curious to see owner's experience here.
By the way, Audioholics just gave the 2600 the award for A/V Receiver of 2005 (http://www.audioholics.com/productreviews/avhardware/2005productawards.php). Not bad, not bad at all.

henwong 12-01-05, 03:04 PM I bought mine online from Hypeaudio along with a 2 year in home warranty for an extra $59. They are unauthorized, but you get peace of mind for only $59. Everything has worked out fine so far, only quibble was them not double boxing the order.

I looked at the Denon 3806 but figured for the same price I'd get a receiver that upscaled to 720p/1080i. As for speakers I believe that Yamaha's own brand of speakers are 6 Ohm's so it shouldn't be a problem.
S1DIMMER 12-01-05, 04:19 PM My RX-V2600 arrived today from Etronics. It came double boxed which was nice. Can't open the inner box until the wife comes home - it's a present from her so gotta get clearance to open it and fire it up - of course I have to make sure it's in good working order ;-). I'll keep you posted on what I think once I've got it going.

Look at my link at the product two posts above. Dowload the manual and page 138 under Specifications, General.
Does anyone know what chip(s) the 2600 uses for scaling/deinterlacing? I've seen in the manual that you're supposed to turn any video conversion off if you're operating in THX mode. What the heck does that mean???
eyazdchi 12-01-05, 05:23 PM thanks .... i actually just got off the phone with Yamaha technical support ...
might as well post this for everyone, the dimensions are: 17.1W x 6.7H x 17.2D.
Thanks anyways Pullo.

If upscaling is what you need, then great. I run everything through HDMI and nothing through the analog domain so the feature is moot for me.
As for speakers, I'm curious to hear real world testing from users that have 4 Ohm speakers. I doubt 6 Ohms impedence will stress the Yamaha any but it all depends how effiecient rating the speakers are. BTW, I saw your post earlier questioning the SQ between the Denon and Yamaha. I was curious how you could use that criteria if you weren't planning on upgrading your entry level speakers anytime soon. I presume you will be now up purchasing something better to complement the 2600?
VisionxOrb 12-01-05, 05:40 PM Uses an oPlus scaler deinterlacer. there an Isreali company that got bought by intel in febuary. i think the webpage is www.oplus.com
As far as turing it off for THX, might have somthing to do with the THX standard. sort of like in THX you HAVE to run a 80hz cross over otherwise ur not in spec.

HDPackfan 12-01-05, 06:47 PM I have 8 ohm speakers so I haven't heard my 2600 with 6 ohm speakers. However, you can specifically set the 2600 to output at 6 ohms. I had a 5790 previously that I ran with 4 ohm speakers for a few months. It would get pretty hot but I could still rest my hand on the top so it didn't appear to be too stressed. As it appears that the 2600 is quite a bit more powerful than my old 5790, I would assume that it can easily handle 6 ohm speakers and probably even 4 ohm speakers without much difficulty.
RLRobbie 12-01-05, 06:50 PM OK, you all have hashedout the HDMI issues but haven't talked much about sound ans speaker compastibility. I have ordered the 2600 and realized that it might blow my current speakers. I have the Pol Audio RM6800's. I noticed that the 2600 specs 130 Watts RMS and my speakers are rated at 65 Watts RMS. Should I even hook them up or look for some highr rated speakers???
Thanks ... Robbie

Hi, VisionxOrb;
thanks for the reply. Oplus is ok, Onkyo uses it in some of their players. As far as the THX thing is concerned, what does the crossover have to do with VIDEO uspcalin? Doesn't make any sense to "turn off video upconversion - to HDMI AND to COMPONENT - if you're using THX post processing"...
Thoughts???

You'll be fine. I highly doubt the Yammy (along with any other upper entry or middle level receivers) can output their full RMS running at ALL seven channels at the same time. You'll be more than fine.
RLRobbie 12-01-05, 07:47 PM Thanks, that is good news.... I just bought the speakers for use with the Panasonic XR70 Receiver but it does no analog switching to HDMI or upconversion so It is going to be returned. Glad I don't have to get new speakers just yet...

I figured whether I used it or not upscaling was a good feature to have. As for sound quality - not sure I could hear a difference using the same old Sony speakers on either the Denon or Yamaha, but given the same set of speakers I was wondering what the differences would be. I do plan on upgrading my speakers down the road. With the expense of the 2600 I don't have the money to blow on a full set of new speakers. I probably won't go any where near high end. I'd want something affordable. I'd like to go take a listen to a few sets when the time comes as for now my crappy 10 year old Sony's will have to do. I briefly hooked up the 2600 tonight - just a quick test of FM radio, a DVD rip from my HTPC and some CD playback also from my HTPC. I was very happy with the sound. I can't wait to dive into really getting this thing hooked up but that will have to wait till Christmas. For the short time I had it hooked up I am impressed with the 2600.

Can I ask why you would buy the US model?
This model will be available in Australia during the next couple of weeks. Unless there is a tremendous price advantage, ( A$1 = US$ 0.74 today), you may run into problems.
You will also be up for hefty shipping costs and perhaps GST when it arrives.
I think you'll get one here for only a couple of hundred bucks more than the US street price.
Often the US models are designed specifically for that market, particularly the voltage which will probably be 110V against 240V over here. The models sent to the states are often set at that voltage and not multi as available here and Asia.
If the US model is both PAL & NTSC there should not be a problem in this regard.
Unless you are in the states at present also consider the brute weight of these machines to mail. They are bloody heavy and I would not trust international shipping for something like this!
I'm looking into the 2600 and wondering if I were to connect my STB via HDMI, then set the STB to pass-through. Would the 2600 up-scale a 480i signal (via HDMI) to either 720p/1080i? Or would it only do this if I connected my STB via component?

It will only pass through HDMI inputs. If you want the scaling you will have to run component in and upconvert/upscale to HDMI 720p/1080i. So the question is, is it better to run HDMI out to the TV directly from the STB and not have the scaling from the 2600??? Many new TV's or projectors have scalers as well you'll have to decide what is best by trying all different methods.
The Gynecologist 12-02-05, 01:00 AM Thanks Fishhooks[U]
The rx v2600 was supposed to arrive to Australia in two weeks time but according to Yamaha manager here in Sydney two days ago, the shipment will be delayed to end of January or begining of February. The rx v1600 only will be available in two weeks.
I'll be more than happy to get it from here and I'm not trying to save money, but I realy want it before Christmas that's all.
My cousen is in USA and can bring it with him next week.
I think in the manual it says that only the GUI gray back will be displayed in NTSC form only, but other vidoe input or output encoding, you can select from NTSC/PAL. The only thing is the unit is initially set to NTSC in USA model and PAL in other models.
Tuner also have different range and the XM feature won't work, but anyway it won't be available in Australian model.
The voltage issue can be easly solved with a transformer which is 20 - 30 AUD.
Thanks again.

Fishhooks 12-02-05, 05:36 AM Okay, good luck, I too often get gear from o/s if it is not going to be available here for a while, the latest being the new Pioneer DV-898AVi DVD deck (79AVi in the states), which I brought back from Singapore a few weeks back. But I often shy away from big bulky items such as Amps.
Hope your cousin has a good "in" with the airline, as the 2600 will probably take his whole luggage allowance, also consider the new customs rules which allow goods to the value of A$900. You can often crib on this somewhat, but the new rule is if you exceed the 900, you pay 10% GST on the 'whole' value of the item, thus they don't subtract the concession amount from the total as they used to do!
Just one more small suggestion, a 240 - 110 volt tranny to handle a beast like the 2600, will be quite a bit more expensive than you suggest!
texass44 12-02-05, 05:58 AM Just wondering if anyone has got the 2600 hooked up to a panasonic AE700 and has compared the scaler/deinterlacer in the 2600 to the AE700.
I'd really be interested in any opinions as to which is better.
I'm really interested in the 2600 at the moment but if the oplus scaler/deinterlacer is no better than the one in the AE700 then I'll put the Denon 3806 back into contention.
Thanks in advance for any info.......Tex.
EphesusTrading 12-02-05, 07:21 AM slowine just got one. I'm considering buying one, however, I have Klipsch speakers all around and was worried that the Yamaha receivers would make them too bright. I've heard that the new receivers have a warmer sound. Is this true?
Hi:
I just came across a review in Home Theater's June, 2005 issue. I'm also considering maching Klipsch with Yamaha. I hope the article helps.
Peace
Wood2395 12-02-05, 07:27 AM If upscaling is what you need, then great.
I've responded to this before, but maybe in another thread. I'm using Polk LC265i's for fronts and center which are awesome 4 ohm speakers with no problems. I have 6 ohm surrounds for now but will eventually upgrade to 4 ohm matching Polk surrounds. My unit runs a bit warm, but again, not so hot that I can't rest my hand on the top of it while running heavy action scenes, etc. It sounds great driving the Polks - Plenty of power with no stress.

I think you forgot to post the link. Here it is: http://hometheatermag.com/floorloudspeakers/605klipsch/
S1DIMMER 12-02-05, 12:54 PM Those Klipsch speakers look pretty nice.
What do you guys think Klipsch vs Paradigm Cinema series with the 2600?
jandawil 12-02-05, 12:57 PM Another vote for Klipsch....I LOVE my reference series. I am trying to talk my dad into getting that vs. Bose. I think I have convinced him. He's heard mine and loves them as well. My mom like the cute little white Bose cubes though. Women need to get their priorities straight.

Tell me about it my wife was yelling at me for having the 2600 up to loud and I was at -35dba's last night. I love listening to movies and music pretty loud but she doesn't like it at all. I don't even think she needs anything other than the built in TV speakers to keep her happy. I need my own sound proof listening room. If it were entirely up to me I'd have large speakers all around with the volume cranked up.
jandawil 12-02-05, 02:28 PM I hear you man.....that's why I'm starting this weekend converting my 2 car garage into a dedicated HT. The WAF was actually easier to get than I thought so right now she is the most awsomest (is that even a word) wife in the world.
VisionxOrb 12-02-05, 09:52 PM well i think THX has specs for video also, and probably having these things on violate the THX spec ( like have the crossover something else violates the THX audio spec ).
Doesnt mean that its going to negitivly affect the video, just means ur not THX at that moment. i say dont worry about it
Hi, VisionxOrb;
thanks for the reply.
Thoughts???
