View Full Version : Official Comcast 3412 & 3416 STB Discussion
I'm using a 6412p1 DVR with my Maxent MX42X3 HDTV.
Along with it's other annoying features the problem that bothers me most is if I turn the DVR off, when I power it back on it won't display a picture (other than menus) until I do a short "play" of a recorded program. I think others have reported this problem, and of course the work-around is to leave the DVR powered on.
I don't really like leaving it powered on all the time - anyone know if this can be fixed?
Do the 6412p3 or the 3416 have this annoying problem?
This is a common glitch with the Moto DCT 34xx & 64xx seroes STB.
The only way to power the unit off is to unplug the power cord.
The off mode is only a standby mode for the AV Outputs & the Display....
Possibly, with a little counseling.
ROFLMBO!
And better QA from both Motorola & Comcast.....

Yeah, but that sort of stuff costs money, and well, you know how that goes... :p :D

Well with my $200.00+ cable bill every month, I am sure they can hire better Quality Assurance people.
I think Comcast's philosophy with these DVRs is having them "just good enough"...there's no way this device would compete with the major CE companies if such devices were to make it to market.
tleschuck 12-16-05, 03:40 PM I currently have a DCT2524/1612 cable box. I was thinking of upgrading to the DCT-3412/2305 since the Comcast center now has them.
I would like to still run the DCT-3412 thru my S-VHS VCR so I can record TV shows. Does the DCT-3412 have analog audio outputs that I can run into my VCR? I have the S-video input in the VCR that I can use from DCT-2412.
I assume I can use the digital audio optical output to my digital input on my reciever?
Can someone post a pic or link to the back of a DCT-3412?
Thanks.

Here's the specs for the "3400" series (which is what the 3412 is). This PDF includes a picture of the back of the 3400 (i.e, the 3412).

And yes, it of course has analog audio out (as well as digital).

Yes the 3412 has the analog S-Video / component jacks/ports.
but the 3412 still has some of the 6412 quirks and problems.
tleschuck 12-16-05, 04:48 PM I will now go pick up a DCT3412. Thanks for your help, all.
From reading this thread the Series 2 3412 has had some problems. When I go to pick up the 3412 is there a way I can tell if it is a Series 1 or 2? Are there other ones I need to be aware of to stay away?
Thanks.

Only the phase 1 is out. it is only 2 months old. mine was built in mid. Oct. 2005.
And picked it up 2 days after they arrived at my local comcast office.
tleschuck 12-16-05, 05:33 PM I forgot to ask....I assume the Optical SPDIF and audio analog outputs will work at the same time, right? In other words, work in tandem.
How about the S-video and component outputs as well?
Kraziehase 12-16-05, 05:53 PM Hello everybody. I'm new here and I'd like to ask you guys a few questions about comcast and their boxes. I used to have a 6412 HD DVR box for 6 months and it worked without any problems until the hard drive died and I got the box switched for a 3412. Now with the 3412 everytime I FF or RR my recorded shows there is a delay between my button presses and the action happening on screen. Sometimes it will get stuck on FF or RR. Does this happen on all boxes, or is mine defective? I called comcast and they told me "They all do that. It's just how it is.". My old 6412 was very responsive to my button presses and never got stuck. Secondly, it appears to me that my HD channels do not look as good as on the 6412. It tough to describe, but they just appear "softer" and not quite as sharp and crisp. On my old 6412 I was using a DVI cable. Since this new 3412 does not have DVI  , I bought a DVI to HDMI adapter for my DVI cable and I now use that. I also tried to hook it up with component cables, and the HD channels still looked soft. Is the lack of true DVI the cause of this? Has anyone else noticed this when going from 6412 to 3412?? I also wanted to know if anyone knew when the TIVO/COMCAST thing is supposed to roll out? Thanks a lot!
OK, well they came today. THey swapped my 3412 with another 3412. SAME EXACT ISSUES. The tech then went out to his truck and brought me a 6412. I have only played around with it for about an hour, but so far so good. None of my 3412 issues are happening.

So it looks like it a box issue huh?
Did the tech agree?
Just wonder

The problem is more sluggish on the 3412 then the 6412.
tleschuck 12-17-05, 02:41 AM Okay...one more....
My DCT3412 will be passing the signal thru my S-VHS recorder via a S-video connection. Do I have to worry about the Macrovision when playing back video via the built-in harddrive since it is going thru the VCR? How about recording a program with the VCR via the recorded harddrive video material?
I just don't have enough connections in my TV so that's why I need to daisy-chain. Plus; I want to be able to have a choice of recording video onto video tape and harddrive.

I asked him that. He didn't seem to know for sure (big surprise), but he did say that they have alot of problems with those boxes. 2 Boxes back to back with same problems kind of tells me that it's a box issue. I read a rumor on another msg board that Comcast was going to switch to Sony STBs? ANybody else heard this.
BTW, i did experience the problem when you turn the 6412 box off, you get no tv picture, just the guide. I reset the box and it's fine now. I usually leave it on anyway.
Kicker|MyU 12-17-05, 02:45 PM I just had a 3412 box installed, to replace the 6412 (non-phase 3) box that was freezing on playback.
Is the SATA port active to add additional storage space? If so, what do I need to buy to accomplish this?
I am on Comcast in North Eastern Mass, some techs say it's alive, others just don't know what I am talking about.. Anyone here know? :D

The SATA port is NOT Active at this time via Comcast Cable. They had plans to rent external Hard Drives, and activate the SATA port. However about a month ago, they have dropped all Plans for renting external HD and supporting the SATA port.
uzombie 12-17-05, 04:42 PM Well, I just posted this in another forum and thought here might be some good advice:
-I helped someone with their AV setup (Elite VSX74... receiver, DV-59 DVD, and 61" Elite Plasma and DCT3412 Ver.1).
-They wanted it neater then how the AV salesperson left it (wiring) and how Comcast setup (really long Component cable). I'm not sure Comcast provided the white Comp/aud cable but..its like 25' long!
-Used HDMI from 3412 and DVD. One long HDMI to Plasma (through wall and hidden).
DVD plays fine. Even added a TOS cable for audio discs.
GREEN SCREEN from Comcast 3412. Drove me nuts as it had audio. Called tech support and got disconnected after 20 mins hold (grrrr). Then 2nd attempt got me a female-voiced tech that was sharp. We tried the old Direct to TV, and bypass the receiver trick and box works fine (no audio as the Plasma has no speakers connected). So it was the receiver! (2 HDMI inputs/1 HDMI out).
After hanging up with Comcast (I was humbled...as I was sure it was the box), I connected the HDMI back to receiver and FSNG, connected the HDMI interconnect to the DCT3412 and got a picture! Then a box in front say that I must use the Component Out as this connection cannot be used with a repeater..then it went GREEN! With Audio! The 3412 senses the Pioneer Elite port as a Repeater and thinks its trying to copy the signal!!
So, there is no way for this setup to be neat. One cannot have multiple HDMI to the Plasma as the DCT3412 thinks its being repeated (well, in a sense, duh! more like switched from one source to another...).
Is this Motorola's, Pioneer or the HDMI conspiracy fault? What good is a switching HDMI receiver if one device won't play? If its digital, why go analog (Component)?
(so glad I had a short Comp and TOS cable for the DCT3412...)

The SATA port is active on SA equipment though isn't? Comcast uses SA in some systems. Cox does and is even referred to in this ad from Maxtor.

Correct it is active in SA STB, but Comcast Moto DCT series it is not active.
We "lucky" Moto people are stuck with 120GB while SA folks can have 120+300=420GBs..
Seems downright un-constitutional... :p :D

Amen! with more and more HD content, it fills quickly.
People are under the impression that the DVR is a long term storage device.
Guess what. It's not! It is a time shifting device to record shows so you can watch them at a later time. (very short term) before you need to record more stuff.
For those who need long term storage, should look into a PVR DVD-R setup.....
seriously though, the HD space is way to limited for even time shifting work as 4 HD shows and 1 2 hour HD movie can fill up the 120 gb HD quickly.

+1 You said it.. Being new to the HD World... I just got my Comcast 6412 and the first HD movie put me at 17% full. OUCH!. I just recorded The Last Samuri and afraid to even look at what i'm up to now.. MAN!. I do have an HTPC as well with a 250 gig that's full of HD movies and an 2 externals drives. 1 a 250 gig that's got about half it's space used and a 300 gig I haven't taken out of the box yet. I imagine I'll have them full in no time flat.. lol
hdtvbostonma 12-18-05, 12:21 PM I'm brand new at these forums, so bear with me if I make some mistakes. I have a few questions about the 3412 STB.
After reading that the box is docsis cable modem compatible, can I run an ethernet cable out of the ethernet connecter directly to my router / computer, and skip my current modem?
Does anyone get lip-sync issues off certain channels? I know that my Samsung HL-R5078W is prone to this, but it's more pronounced on some channels, and never occurs on others.
I have the same bugs as in having to go through a DVR recording at times to get a picture.
Also, when swithcing between HD and ch 2-99, i sometimes get a stuttering picture. Switching between 2 SD channels fixes this.

No the Built in modem ethernet jack is not currently enabled for use.
tleschuck 12-18-05, 01:26 PM I'm dead in the water.....
Took my DCT2524 and exchanged it for the DCT3412. Plugged it in and got the 'wait a moment' for the channels. 6 hours later still the same. Could see 5-6 cable channels including Sci-fi. Called Comcast and they reset the box on their end and I can only see a 3-4 local cable channels. The rest all come up as 'Not Authorized' including Sci-Fi. Oh...but I can get the digital music channels (700's).
Anything I can do? Go exchange it for another cable box? Thur is soonest tech came come out. Don't want to wait that long.

How do I program the macro for the 30 second FF?
Also, what are the best audio settings?
I use my TV (Samsung HL-R5078W) speakers most of the time, and then my JVC surround receiver sometimes. I have the HDMI nring the audio into the TV, then optical to the surround sound (to avoid video lag).
What audio settings should I use on this box?
Are there any other macros or settings I should use?
Why do FoxHD and ESPNHD look better than CBSHD while watching football?
I also think that ch 2-99 look MUCH better on the 3412 than the 6412.
The picture on the 3412 is slightly darker than with the 6412.
Same annoying problems/bugs. Audio mute while recording with STB off, at times having to go through thr DVR to get regular channels on, and the freezing of functions while using FF/REW/PAUSE.
You're the expert, any thoughts?
THANKS!!
swmacneil 12-19-05, 12:11 AM OK, so i read through most all of these posts and didnt find a direct answer. If there is a way to get recorded content OFF of this box and onto my PC, what is it? im new to the HD world and would love to off load recorded content to my PC for later viewing.

How to program the remote for 30, 60, 90, 120 (and more) Second Skip
Create a 30 second skip using the following directions:
1) Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
2) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3) Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice
4) Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button
5) Type in the code 00173 for 30 second Skip.
6) Press whatever button you want to map the skip to.
Next, you create a macro using your new 30 second skip:
1) Press and hold down the "Setup" button until the light blinks twice.
2) Press 995.
3) Press the key you want to assign the X second skip to.
4) Press the button that you have used for the 30 second skip x times. (2 times for 60 seconds, 3 times for 90 seconds, and so on.)
5) Press and hold the "Setup" button until the light blinks twice to exit programming.
X = 30, 60, 90, 180, etc.
As for the Audio settings in the IPG setup menu, those are only for the analog audio output's. These settings do not change anything on the Digital Audio outputs.
The STB is ALWAYS on. You would have to unplug the power cord to shut it off.
the power off mode is only a standby mode that shuts down the A/V outputs.
Leave the STB on at all times to avoid several potential problems.
I have a question.
I've been to a couple of remapping sites that explain how to remap the 6412 remotes(which are very similar tho the 3412 remotes). I have followed the instructions and still no go. Here's what I'm trying to do.
For some reason, my TV's remote circuitry takes about 3-4 minutes after turning it on to respond as far as volume and mute are concerned. It's annoying. I have a HDMI connection from my 3412 to my TV. I tried global unlock, I tried setting the remote (Comcast) to operate the volume and mute independently. However, either way I go, it either just goes to the TV volume control, or no volume control at all.
All I want to do is to turn up the TV volume all the way and have the 3412 take command of the volume and mute. Even if I can get this done, will the cable remote still be accessing the remote circuitry in the TV, or the remote circuit in the 3412? I hope this makes sense.
Thanks,
Mike
I just switched back to Comcast (Union, NJ) after a few years away and got a pair of 3412s yesterday - one hooked up to my HD set, the other to my SD set. Let me first say that the PQ improvement is dramatic to say the least. When I last had Comcast, the non-HD PQ was so poor (especially from 1-99) that I could barely watch, but now, wow, what a difference. I've got the HD set through the component connections and the SD set through the S-Video. I've come over from my HD Tivo and so far the learning curve for the 3412 is relatively small. Different interface (obviously), but similar basic principles. I have noticed that one of my 3412s makes a lot of hard drive clicking noise. And although it's a different type of noise, it's still a bit quieter than my HD Tivo was with its fan. I do miss having a dedicated button to turn off the TV only without having to remember pressing an additional button as I don't want to mistakenly turn off the 3412.
I have a couple of questions though. Firstly, for those that activate the 30-second skip (or 60, 90, etc.), to which button do you normally assign the command? As I'm not too familiar with the remote control yet, I don't want to disable a button to activate this command and then realize later that I needed the original button.
Also, for any other Harmony remote users out there, I haven't run my setup for the 3412 yet and was wondering what your impressions are of how well it works with it? It worked flawlessly with my HD Tivo (after a bit of work getting it set) and am hoping for the same.
Thanks in advance.
MASteve 12-20-05, 10:01 AM I've had my 3412 for a couple of months now, and it's recently developed an issue with dropping the video/audio when accessing On-Demand, or even the recorded data at times.
I lose the signal, but retain the guide data. I called Comcast, and the "fix" seems to be that I have to force a picture on it by powering off, and then on again. Then I have to play a recording off teh hard drive and THEN it will give me a signal. According to the rep, they have so few boxes now that I would most liekly get an older model and blah blah blah.....yeah thanks, big help you are
I also have times where I can't play anything off the hard drive. I try to play and it gives me the title as TBA and then does nothing..."fix" is jus to power it off and then on again so far...Oh, and somehow I managed to record two programs on 12/31/1989  although I can't play them
j_stewart 12-20-05, 11:27 AM Comcast installed a new (actually it looks a little used) DCT 3412-I last night about 6:30 PM. It replaced my DCT5100 HD box. We just swapped it out using the same power cord, component connections, etc.
The tech stayed until all the subscribed channels were coming in properly and the unit seemed to be working fine. I tested recording one HD channel and watching another and basically just played around with the box for about an hour. All seemed fine.
About 8-8:30PM the unit seemed to reboot. I was actually watching a DVD at the time and I just saw the time go off and then return about a minute later. This happened one more time while I was watching the DVD.
I started watching Monday night football and at about 10 PM and the box appeared to reboot again. The screen went black, the time went off, the box came back on and showed 12:00, then the time was restored and the picture came back. I immediately checked the menu/guide which was gone. Slowly it came back and the guide started filling in.
During all three reboots or what appeared to be reboots, I was not recording or playing back anything. I just had the box tuned to an HD channel, ESPN and then ABC.
This morning I've had the box on since 8:30 AM and it hasn't rebooted yet.
Should I go ahead and call Comcast or should I wait awhile? Is it possible that the unit was receiving new firmware/software and rebooted following that install? At first that was what I suspected but after three reboots I'm starting to wonder if I got a bad box.
I just looked at the setup menu and the s/w & firmware versions were:
S/W Ver: 71.44 - 1203
Firmware: 12.22
Anyone else had a similar problem?
Thanks.
Update: The reboot happened again about 12:30 today. I check the firmware and software version after the reboot and they were the same as before. I went ahead and called Comcast and the rep asked if I had the 3412 plugged into a surge protector. I did have it plugged into a surge protect so they recommended that I plug it directly in the wall. After a lot of wrestling with cables and moving things around I was able to plug it directly in.
I've got some serious doubts as to whether this will do any good but I guess I'll find out in a day or so.
The worst thing about the reboot is the loss of the guide data. Without several days worth of data the DVR has a very limited value.
This is normal behavior for these xx12 boxes. First time I got mine, the channels were off, and I was "not authorized" for NBC, and some others. After about 90 minutes the channels fixed themselves, and I recall it rebooting once or twice that evening to download the latest firmware, etc.
By the next morning, everything was fine and the guide was populated.
But to answer your question, that is normal.
mthhurley 12-20-05, 03:35 PM Hi all!
I just had my 3214 installed today and have been playing around with it. I got the 30 second skip progrmmmed which is great.
The other problem I cannot resolve is changing channels. There is a setting I cannot locate in here that I would appreciate someone pointing me to.
To get to channel 2, I have to put in 002. I can do 2, enter..or 2 and wait. My old digital box let me do either of the latter two. How do I change that setting?
Thanks!

Page down in the guide main menu to "setup" Then choose guide setup. You want to turn on "auto tune"
That way you don't need leading zeros.

OK....Last question I think.
After viewing a recorded program, the Delete or Don't Delete option comes up. If you don't click it in time, it defaults to delete it...which is very bad. I have/will have lots of kids programs saved that I turn on and let run to entertain my little one. I wont be sitting on the remote when one ends but a small catastrophe will ensue if a particular favorite episode gets deleted. How do I reverse that default (like my Tivo defaults to not delete)?
For the 30-second-skip crowd, can you guys tell me to which button do you prefer to assign the function? I don't want to disable anything important. Thank you.
Thank you again!

Your's is the first one to do that. None of my STB do that. it will show the delete / not delete box for 8 sec. and if it gets no response, it just goes back to the current cable ch.. Call your cable office and ask for a new box.
For the 30-second-skip crowd, can you guys tell me to which button do you prefer to assign the function? I don't want to disable anything important. Thank you.
The HELP button.
HD Rookie 12-21-05, 09:53 AM After viewing a recorded program, the Delete or Don't Delete option comes up. If you don't click it in time, it defaults to delete it.
It appears as though the default is "delete program", but if you do nothing, nothing happens. Have you ever done nothing and let the message go away? It shouldn't remove your program.
On the flipside, after watching a program and the delete message appears - defaulted to "delete program", I have accidently clicked "ok" on a couple of shows that I wanted to keep. My wife was POd.
mthhurley 12-21-05, 10:03 AM Ok...I must have done that HD Rookie, because in testing it this morning, it does not delete the show if you do not respond to it. I think I must have been rushing to find the button (new remote) and thought I hit nothing when in fact, I hit the ok button.
I agree...It should default to Do Not Delete.
YardleyBill 12-21-05, 10:48 AM I posted this in a separate thread, but got no responses, so I thought I would try here...
I just got a new 3412, and there is no output from the optical SPDIF.
Is there something that needs to be enabled for this to work, is there something wrong with this box?
hdtvbostonma 12-21-05, 11:37 AM SCANPA......Thanks for the tip on the 30sec ff & macro. I used the HD zoom. Is the HD zoom ever used for real HD zoom? How do I put the original function back. Same with tv/vcr.
I would like to use the help button instead.
As for the sound settings, I realize that the settings have no effect on the optical output, but what are the best settings for my Samsung HL-R5078W? At times, whlie watching football I can barely hear the announcers voices. I can normally use my surround sound and raise the center speaker volume. But what settings on my 3412 will help this for my TV speakers?
What do the compression, matrix etc. settings mean?
THANKS!

Scroll back 1 page to wareagle's post. I asked this same question and he provided a link to factory reset.

I have an older 6412PII, and am dissapointed to see that they still haven't changed that in the firmware, to default to "not delete" On mine if you don't press anything after several seconds, it just goes back to the menu, w/o deleting.
I have accidentally deleted many things. More than once, I have hit "Info" towards the end of a recorded show, to hit "restart from beginning" or "go back" and in that split second between my finger moving to the delete button after processing from my brain, and hitting the actual button, the delete/don't delete pops up, and I DELETE IT because the stupid thing defaults to delete.
One time due to the sluggish acceptance of commands, I had hit enter to restart something, and it didn't process right away, and the delete box pops up, and I watched in horror as sure enough the box processes the OK key pressed about 2 seconds after that came up, and I have no time to dive to the unit to pull the plug.
I am extremely cautious now when I near the end of a program that I want to keep, best thing I found is to hit the "LAST" key, and that goes back to the current channel.

How do you do the 15 second replay? The only macro I saw was for a 30 second (60, 90...) skip forward.
Thanks.
j_stewart 12-21-05, 02:58 PM Well, removing the surge protector did the trick. No reboots since I plugged it directly into the wall.
I'm shocked that it worked, happy, but shocked.
Any ideas as to why a surge protector would be a problem for the 3412 but not for any other components?

A surge protector absorbs excessive voltage. causing it to vary some times. The Moto STB do not like any change in voltage at all... Comcast has always recommended it plugged straight into the wall, unless you have a power conditioning surge protector. These maintain a constant voltage while providing surge protection.

Would this product from APC be the type of power conditioner to use?
APC AV 1.5 kVA H Type Power Conditioner 120V:
http://www.apc.com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=H15
Unfortunately, the 3412 did reboot again late this afternoon. There was no noticeable power fluctuation (like lights dimming) but I suppose the voltage could vary from time to time. I know the UPS I use at work occasionally kicks in due to a voltage sag; I suppose the same thing could happen at home.

Yes that would be perfect for the high end A/V user in a area that has inconsistent power fluctuations. That is a better model then the one I use. :D
victor_c26 12-25-05, 01:48 AM I just got the DCT3412 from Comcast and it just isn't receiving the channel information. I get the To Be Announced messages in the guide, and the box that says the channel will be available shortly on the screen with a black backround.
Right now I'm trying the n dl procedure. I also noticed that the installer didn't give me a cable card, and when I asked about it, he seemed perplexed as to what I was talking about.
EDIT: Ok, now the tuner is stuck at ' DL (The digital LED 0 that lights on and off in the seperate LED sections of the 0, which shows you it's downloading something)
EDIT 2: It finished the n dl procedure, but I still get nothing. It's still stuck at the "This channel should be available shortly" box on all channels.

Did Comcast install the box and leave with it not working correctly?
Does is at least (or did it) display the correct time?
I had the same issues when Comcast installed the box.
It turns out the RF connections are in different relative locations compared to other DCTs.
He had the cable attached to RF Out instead of RF In. I figured it out myself while he was on he way back to the office to get a replacement box.
Double check your cable is connected to RF IN on the back of the box.
J
victor_c26 12-25-05, 01:15 PM He connected the coaxial cable in the RF IN connector. And yeah, he left without waiting for the channels to actually appear. I'm stumped, I've called Comcast to tell them about the problem and they reset the box two times. That didn't work either.
Oh, and it does display the correct time.
Also, he installed a splitter to the current cable internet connection I have. Should he have done that? I suggested he install it seperately, but he said this was the best way. My net connection is fine, it's just the cable tv connection that isn't getting activated for some reason.

If power needs are less, the APC AV 1KVA H Type Power Conditioner 120V MODEL- H10-APC is about $100 less expensive, and seems to have much the same specs (except 1KVA instead of 1.5KVA).

I just picked up a DCT2244. This box does not have a DVR, but I'm having exactly the same problem. I get all the guide info fine, but no video. Just "This channel will be available shortly." Resets from Comcast did not fix it.
Let me know if you find anything out. Comcast won't send a tech until next week!

That is one old model STB.....
:)
jlaureano 12-27-05, 06:03 PM I got a 3412 last week...was having problems with my 6412, and when Comcast came to swap it out, the 3412 was what they had.
My comments:
Same iGuide as the rest.
Don't know about dumping the DVR content to a PC...from what I read I should be able to though.
NO DVI out...I was disappointed. HDMI/component only for HD (plus all the regular jacks)
It's quiet, the new fan keeps the unit cooler (I think lack of a fan is what killed my 1st gen 6412).
I'll have to take a closer look, but it appears that the HD pic is not as good as on the 6412. Could just be my imagination or the show I watched, but it appreared to be more pixelated than before. Perhaps that's ADS? Again, perhaps my imagination.
The actual box is about 2 inched shorter front to back than the 6412.
No AV jacks in front (so what).
Other than that, it's the same as the 6412. I'm guessing the famous "mute" feature is still there, but that's not a real problem for me.
I recently upgraded to a 3412 from a 6412 and also noticed pixelation and 'fuzziness' on the HD channels with the new box. Thought I was just being picky but noticed others were having similar issues. Was wondering if anyone else was having the same problems and any suggestions for resolving it.
That (2244) is one old model STB.....
:)
I still have one of them. It's big advantage for Tivo users is that it has a serial port that the Tivo can control, which is much better than using I/R.. I use a Tivo as a backup for the occassional surprises that the 6412 produces.
What is the more current non-HD digital stb that Comcast is deploying?
jlaureano 12-28-05, 09:56 PM OK, well they came today. THey swapped my 3412 with another 3412. SAME EXACT ISSUES. The tech then went out to his truck and brought me a 6412. I have only played around with it for about an hour, but so far so good. None of my 3412 issues are happening.
I am having the same issues with my new 3412. I got a 3412 when I upgraded to DVR service and I was so disappointed. The HD picture quality has been fuzzier and softer with the 3412. Did you ever figure out a solution to make the picture a little more clearer. I think I might cancel the DVR and go back to a 6412.

I finally got it to work by accident.
Do you have an existing cable internet connection running? Reason I ask is because:
I needed to fix a light switch on the door way air lock light, so in order to work on it, I had to turn off the breaker that's running that light switch. Well, since my cable modem Motorola SB5100 and my DCT3412 I are both on the same breaker, they were both reset.
As I switched the breaker back on when I finished fixing the light fixture, both the cable modem and the DVR powercycled at the same time. And bam, both the modem and the DVR ran smoothly. Heh, turns out I had to reset the modem so the DVR could get the data from the headend. Don't know why the technician didn't tell me to reset the modem.

You are making an assumption that the technician really is a techie. Forget that. These guys, for the most part, have a hard time just getting the DVR out of the box and plugged in.

The power cycle on the STB is what caused it to work. The Cable Modem operates in a area not effected by the Cable system. They do not even know each other is using the same coax into the home.........

I've power cycled the thing half a dozen times before the breaker reset, and that didn't do anything to fix the problem. *Shrug*
victor_c26 12-29-05, 10:12 PM Damn it, why does the DCT 3412 I let me watch one channel while recording something on another, and sometimes not?
Right now I'm recording something, and I when I try to change the channel, it says it will stop recording.
mproper 12-29-05, 10:24 PM I just received my 3412 a few days ago and set it up and I'm having problems.
I have it hooked up via component to the TV. The HD channels look fine, but any other non-hd channel (FX, Comedy Central...etc) are so dark I can barely see them. My TV is set to a brightness of "50" for everything else (HD, Tivo via S-Video, DVD) but if I'm watching a non-HD channel through the 3412, I have to crank the brightness up to 90-100 just to be able to see anything (and even then it looks pretty crappy.
Any ideas of what's going on with my box?

At least it is working now! :)

Are you using the SWAP button to switch tuners?
Perhaps the 2nd. Tuner has gone offline, if so, then you will need to do a Factory Reset, to restore the 2nd. tuner.
Power off the STB and press ok/select wothin 2 sec. and bring up the Diagnostic page.
Go down and Check d06 and hit ok, does it show info for both tuners? (it should say page 1 of 2 at the bottom.) Use the down arrow key to view the 2nd. tuner.

Hey, didn't think of that. Yes, S-Video looks fine. Definitely something with the components and those channels. Anyway to reset things since it was working ok before?
I did take my receiver out of the lineup too and hooked it directly to the TV, just in case that was causing the problem, but no luck.
scooter6 12-30-05, 09:21 PM Okay - here is a brief rundown of my situation -
Had 6412 hooked up to my new Samsung 50" DLP - was using DVI-to-HDMI cable and all was right in the world for 3 weeks --- picture was great - audio was great
DVR worked with no issues at all even prior to the DLP TV and HD being added
A few nights ago, I no longer got signal according to the TV -
I added component video cables from STB to TV and signal was fine -- still bothered me why DVI-to-HDMI stopped working
So I read a lot of forums, etc and tried everything I could see as suggestions -- even spent 45 min on phone with Comcast last night -- got an actual tech on the phone after talking with a CSR initially - he couldn't get it to work either after we tried everything - reset box multiple times, etc.
Finally got the TV to say "HDCP authentication failed, use YPbPr" on a blue screen and then lost signal again on DVI-to-HDMI -- ???? tech said must be a problem with the box ----
So, today I picked up what appears to be a brand new 3412 - still wrapped, complete with manual, etc. So, knowing there is no DVI out on the new one, I got a brande new HDMI-to-HDMI cable --
Came home, hooked it up using the new cable --- still get no signal using HDMI
I currently have it hooked up using component video cables (brand new as well - Monster cables (I know, I spent more than I needed to but I was desparate)
Picture is 'ok' -- HD doesn't appear quite as crisp as on 6412
I checked the firmware version is 12.12 I think -- from Aug 2005
I went into setup and tried every setting I could think of -- when I switched it to 480i my TV states 'mode not supported' so I tried 720p and 1080i and both look just 'ok' in my eyes -- normal channels don't look quite as nice either but they aren't horrible as others have stated on here ---
I'm at a loss - I haven't called Comcast yet but my fear has to be that the HDMI port is possibly not active on the 3412???
Anyone got any suggestions on this before I spend a lot of time with Comcast on this -- I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but I'm close to wanting a tech to come out and see for himself my setup and see why it's not working.
My setup now includes:
Samsung HL-R5067W 50" DLP
Motorola 3412 STB
Sony surround receiver
STB connects to TV using component video and spdit digital coax for audio to the receiver -- sound is not as loud as before, have to turn receiver up more than normal, even on 5.1 broadcasts to hear them good --
Any help would be appreciated
Scott

Why all of a sudden bad handshake between STB & TV??
I tried pulling plug on 6412 to reset it - had TV on before cable box but
TV would just blink a few times before stating 'no signal'
When I hooked up the component video to 6412 while still having the
DVI-to-HDMI cable plugged in - went into TV setup to change source back
to HDMI and would get a picture for about 5 seconds then lose it again??
Looks like there is a handshake/authentication failure happening when
the two devices begin talking to one another??
Is this possible due to some sort of update Comcast did on firmware or
something? I fear I'm chasing two problems here -- 6412 had a firmware
update that whacked my settings -- new 3412 for some reason doesn't
have HDMI port enabled? I could not duplicate the above scenario on the
3412 -- never go the HDCP authentication error and could not even get
HDMI to show picture for 5 seconds?? Uggh...very very frustrating !!

Unless I missed something, at this point I would be forced to conclude that the HDMI port on the Samsung was the culprit!
scooter6 12-31-05, 12:15 AM that doesn't make much sense to me since it worked for 3 weeks and I'm getting a temporary signal - meaning output has to be working - at least for a moment?
So, you're saying for some reason the HDMI port on the Samsung is malfunctioning?
I guess the way to test that would be get a DVD player that has a DVI or HDMI output and hook it to the TV - taking the STB out of the picture (no pun intended ha) ??
I guess I can try that
anyone else have any ideas?

new 3412 for some reason doesn't have HDMI port enabled?
I have a new 3412 that I just got this week and the HDMI port works fine for me. However, I have a Sharp TV rather than a Samsung.
My firmware version is 12.22; the software version is 71.44-1203.
Did you try doing the full reset of the box (the one that takes an hour or so to redownload everything)? Comcast had to do this to mine to get channels 2-99 working. I didn't hook up the HDMI cable until after this, so I'm not sure if HDMI was working prior to the reset or not.
blizzardo 12-31-05, 11:41 AM I posted this in a separate thread, but got no responses, so I thought I would try here...
I just got a new 3412, and there is no output from the optical SPDIF.
Is there something that needs to be enabled for this to work, is there something wrong with this box?
worked from the start for me...
how do i know if we have ADS?
hdmi looks milky compared to component. anyone else? any fix?

I'm having the same issue with our 3412 and the Philips plasma. Happened a week or so ago - picture would display for a second or 2 and then go to a green screen. Rebooted TV, powercycled the 3412, nothing. Even did an unplug of the 3412's power cord, wait 30 secs, and then plug in, nothing. Unplugged it for 10 mins and plugged it back in and all was fine for about a week. Now we're getting the same thing. The component video works perfectly though but with a little degredation in the PQ.
Wondering if I should call Comcast or just do the long reboot again?
Anyone know of a place to report bugs? This one and a couple others are quite annoying. :(
amcintyre 12-31-05, 01:06 PM I'm also having the same problem with my new DCT3412 connected via HDMI cable to a DVI adapter to an LCD monitor that supports 1920x1200. The picture will show for a second or two then go blank. I've tried all combinations of powering off and on and nada.
I did see the HDCP authentication error once (via the component connections) but now that seems to have gone away. The LCD diag reports that it is receiving a 1920x540 signal (blank screen), which is half the 1080i that I've got it set to but I seem to remember reading somewhere that might be ok. The EDID data showing on the DCT diag screen shows 1920x1080i 16:9* YES so I assume everything is ok there.
Anyway, anybody know how to get around this? I'm in Atlanta near Emory if that matters as far as the cable head.
Andrew
1. HDCP is used for digital connections only. Since component connections are analog, HDCP is not appicable.
2. If you're using a computer LCD monitor as a TV, then it will probably not work with a digital connection because it most likely doesn't have HDCP capability.
3. Computer LCD monitors won't be able to accept a 1080i component signal because they are not TVs and they won't be able to deinterlace the signal. They may accept a 480p, 720p, or even a 1080p, depending on the native resolution, because they will correspond to various computer resolutions.

>>>The LCD is a high end with 5 inputs (Dell 2405FPW), including DVI and Component, and while it doesn't seem to have HDCP capability, since HDCP is showing OFF in the DCT diag menu, hopefully that isn't an issue.
3. Computer LCD monitors won't be able to accept a 1080i component signal because they are not TVs and they won't be able to deinterlace the signal. They may accept a 480p, 720p, or even a 1080p, depending on the native resolution, because they will correspond to various computer resolutions.
>>>Again, it's a high end LCD and it accepts 1080i just fine over the Component connection.

1. HDCP is used for digital connections only. Since component connections are analog, HDCP is not appicable.

The 6412p3 & the 3412p1 using HDMI can be connected to a Computer monitor.
There are even settings for pc monitors in the USER Menu on the STB. The users Manuel has full instructions on the various settings.

amcintyre 12-31-05, 02:41 PM I did the "n DL" procedure and it didn't change anything. The firmware level stayed the same (Aug 8 2005 12.22) and the screen blanking out after a second or two is still there over the HDMI connection.
Signed, stuck with component until I can find a fix.

HDMI problems are usualy caused by failure in the handshake between the 2 connections. IMHO HDMI is not currently a viable connection type yet. To many issues..... I use Component my self and am very happy with it on both the 6412p2, 6412p3 & 3412p1 STB I Use.
scooter6,
If things worked for three weeks and two different boxes won't hook up with the TV, I would try everything I could with the TV.
Try leaving the cable box on, then turn off the TV, unplug it, wait a minute, then replug it in and turn it on. Then select the HDMI input. Your TV might be caught in a funny state where it won't do the handshake on demand.
I had a problem with my TV after 7 months of perfect operations. Unplug, wait, replug straightened it right out. The computers in these hi-tech TVs can benefit from an occasional reboot.

I don't know if this has any bearing on these problems but I have a 6412 driving a Maxent HDTV. If the 6412's 4:3 override is set to 480i (with the DVI/YPbPr output at 1080i or 720p) the set's HDMI input cannot properly display any channels (analogue or digital) unless they are being broadcast in HDTV format. All other 4:3 override settings display properly.
The spec. for my set's HDMI input does not include 480i. The display, however, does not blue screen - it displays a double width picture, wrapped back on itself.

Yeah, I noticed this as well since my Dell won't display 480i but it gives a nice message saying invalid input. The 4:3 setting is currently 480p which works fine over component for the non HD channels.
I'm beginning to think it might be the Dell DVI input. Maybe. I don't have a PC in the house that has DVI so I can't check it.
But probably not since I can see the picture for a second or two then it blanks. This sounds like some kind of handshake issue even though HDCP is showing off.

I just got the Comcast DCT3412 box. I'm running a HDMI cable to my Samsung HL-R4667W. I then run a optical audio cable from the TV to my Onkyo receiver. I fail to get Dolby Digital this way. If I run an optical audio cable from the Comcast box straight to the receiver I do get Dolby Digital. Any ideas why it's not passing through the TV? Do I have to set the HDMI audio setting to pass through, rather than AUTO?
Thanks, and Happy New Year everyone!
hdtvbostonma 01-01-06, 09:18 AM Does anyone know how to download and copy recordings from a 3412 to DVD?
To an external hard drive?
To a PC?
Thanks!!
traderyodoa 01-01-06, 11:09 AM I'm having problems similar to Scooter6. Running a Pioneer Elite 7xTXVi, Panny 50" plasma, and a DCT3412. Hook 'em up using HDMI and get a picture/sound quickly followed by a warning to use component hookups because a device is not HDCP compliant. Seems to be a handshake issue. All my devices are HDMI and all function without a hitch, but as soon as I plug the 3412 in I get that super friendly green screen. So much for nice clean digital hookups!
traderyodoa 01-01-06, 11:57 AM Another noob question... I see that some cables carry the label "HDCP compliant cable." Is there such a thing as an HDMI cable that is NOT HDCP compliant? If so, how would you know?
scooter6 01-01-06, 12:20 PM Well, as an update -- yesterday morning when I woke up the cable picture was horrible - kept freezing, etc -- then turned on another TV and same thing -- I called Comcast and they were playing an automated message indicating there were issues they were aware of and we working on them -- within an hour or so
everything was back - and to my surprise the picture on the new 3412 was sharper -- things appeared to be back to normal --
Had no issues at all yesterday after that -- even recorded a few programs without problem.
Now - this morning, all sorts of issues again - when playing back DVR programs FF normally just caused the screen to freeze -- I would have to hit Rewind or Stop and then resume it -- happened a couple of times.
The 3412 has rebooted itself several times this morning -- once it reboots and I put it on a channel -- everything is great again -- UNTIL I hit a button on the remote or on the STB itself - doesn't matter what I hit it reboots the STB -- uughh!
So, I'm gonna unplug it from the Monster home power center and plug it into the wall and see if for some reason the STB is getting small power surges since I see from reading on here that the Motorola's don't like that - didn't have any issues with this yesterday though.
I'm beginning to be a huge opponent of these Motorola STB's, their firmware, Comcast's inability to make a marketing partner fix things, etc. Just amazing a company this size can't get things fixed -- certainly not like I'm the only one with issues -- ha
Oh well - that's the update -- I'll post more if anything changes

hdtvbostonma 01-01-06, 09:26 PM HOW TO UN-MUTE THE 34XX-64XX WHEN A RECORDING A PRE-SET SHOW.
I THINK THAT ONE OF THE MOST ANNOYING THINGS ABOUT THIS BOX IS TURNING IT ON AND HAVING THE MUTE LOCKED ON. MY REMOTE OPERATES MY TV VOLUME, SO THIS IS A REAL PAIN. I FOUND THIS ON ANOTHER FORUM.
1. Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote.
2. Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
3. Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button again blinks twice.
4. Hit (Do Not Hold) the "Setup" button
5. Enter in 00141 (for Box Mute)
6. Press whatever button you want “Box Mute" to be.
I USED THE "FAV" BUTTON, FIGHT NEXT TO THE OTHER MUTE. (I DON'T USE A FAVORITES LIST)

Simple solution is to never turn the box to the off mode - The box is really never off, it is just a standby mode. - Always leave the box ON.
I just switched from DirecTV to Cable and I'm having a problem getting my remote to work via the Xantech IR 291 kit and my Comcast DCT 3412. The remote works if I point it at the DCT 3412 and it controls all of my other components just fine via the Xantech. I've tried other emitters from the other working components and the emitter on the DCT 3412 works on the other components. I've tried moving it around and isolating it so it's the only emitter connected to the control block and so far nothing has worked. Has any one had this issue or know a fix. Is there any one else out there using an IR sensor on this box.
thanks,
Gary
Sorry if covered, I did search threads...
Has anyone had issues with 3412 boxes not receiving complete iGuide information?
I had two 6412s with full guide information, they were swapped two weeks ago for two 3412s with HDMI connections to plasmas.
I only receive about 24 hours of guide info, and it is random what channels get populated (not consistent between both boxes, either).
I also got skipping on HD channels when watching live and some pixelation.
They swapped both 3412s last week and still same problem with iGuides.
Hard drives are louder on the new 3412s and hardly any skipping, but again, guides are a major problem.
Many, many calls with Comcast has left me with a sour taste (rude CS and support, messed up scheduling)...
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

johnnyjt 01-02-06, 09:24 PM Hi
I have a 3412 and my 42" plasma has DVI, when I hooked up
HDMI to DVI cable I also got "HDCP authentication failed, use YPbPr"
warning! To fix this the 3412 has a sub HDMI menu which I had
to use via the display on the 3412 to switch it from HDMI to DVI- YPbPr mode.
Also if some HDMI sets have a problem with a snap sound (sound made when the
box switches from one resolution to another) when changing from one channel to
another. There is a audio adjustment in the same HDMI menu that should fix that.

I try to, but at times the STB gets turned off. This method allows you to cancel the mute if you don't leave the box on.
Thanks for the 30 sec skip codes.
The one for X30 sec skips hasn't worked. I've tried it 4 times on 2 different keys.
Any idea what could be wrong?
jsonpic 01-02-06, 09:33 PM I just got 2 new Motorola DCT3412 boxes and I am having some issues. The main problem I am having is with both of them they keep turning off and reseting. Or is their anyway I can see if it is overheating. I need some help????????

(1)
To access the diagnostic menu, start with your STB on.
turn off the STB and press ok/select within 2 sec.
To exit the Diagnostic screen just hit the power button.
(2)
To reset the 62xx - 64xx / 34xx STB follow these steps.
*** Be warned this will erase all STB Settings & Your Cable Account Info from the STB ***
*** This will normaly (some reports that it will on the 34xx series) not delete your DVR settings or Stored Shows on the Hard Drive. ***
Reset procedure
Step 1
Unplug Power Cord from STB.
Step 2
on the STB, Press & Hold {Power & Menu} Keys while plugging the Power Cord back into the STB.
The Display should now say (BOOT)
Step 3
Let Go of the {Power & Menu} Keys and press the up or down arrow keys till you see (n DL) on the Display.
Step 4
Push the {Select} Key To begin Downloading STB software, IPG software, DVR Firmware & Your Account Settings from your Cable Head End. Could take up to 20 min to download.
After it completes this Download the STB will Reset and then begin to download the Time setting info for the STB Clock & begin to populate the IGuide info. Keep your STB on Standby/Off to speed up the IGuide info download.
Could take up to 24 Hours to fill in all 2 weeks of IGuide info.
scooter6 01-03-06, 08:25 AM Well, yesterday afternoon at about 4pm or so - my new 3412 decided to start working as it should? hmmm go figure
I was gonna go swap it out yesterday but their centers were closed for the holiday so I was gonna take it today and swap it out but it worked all last night as it should, guide populated up until about 7pm today already and still loading -
Guess I'll play it by ear and see if it continues to work - perhaps the hard drive was formatting and this was causing the weird behavior ?? I dunno
Also, I did find that HDMI menu that someone just posted about - unfortunately, I already returned my hdmi-to-hdmi cable and exchanged it for 2 sets of components -- maybe I'll try the HDMI again if this box continues to behave itself
I still think I can see a difference in PQ using component vs HDMI but it could all be in my head (ha!)
Happy New Year everyone!
May 2006 bring less problems with these STBs - and perhaps Comcast will switch to something else that works better? We'll see
Be safe all!

some cable head ends might have the 30 sec FF disabled in the firmware. Call your local cable office and talk to someone in the tech support dept... (NO CSR) :)

I'm not sure if 3412 has a slighty different version of the remote?! Could you bring your remote with you to your neigbour's house and see if the skip will work with your remote?

Comcast has 4 versions of the silver / black remote.
Model # URC-1067-BGO & URC-1068-BGO With Out PIP Buttons
and
Model # URC-1067-ABG1 & URC-1068-ABG1 With PIP Buttons

Several things can cause this.
Power Fluctuations - Make sure the STB is plugged directly into the wall.
Signal strength - Check your signal strength for both OOB & Tuner 1 & 2 via the STB diagnostic Menu.
With STB on, turn STB off & press OK/Select (within 2 sec.) to access the Diagnostic Menu.
When the box was Activated / STB reset: it did not download the STB software, IPG software, or the DVR Firmware correctly.
jimmerpro 01-03-06, 11:48 PM I have the same issue with my 3412 - keeps rebooting. Comcast brought a second box out - now it does the same thing. I tried moving around the power - no change - I never had power issues before.
<<Check your signal strength for both OOB & Tuner 1 & 2 >> What should it say?
I'm trying your reset method now. I'll let you know if that helped.
Comcast seems dumb and dumber.......
Thanks.
scooter6 01-04-06, 08:37 AM Well, I see many are having same issues on their new 3412 as me --
All I can tell you is what happened when I got mine last Friday -
It kept rebooting starting Sunday morning sometime and happened anytime I hit a button on the remote - didn't matter which one
So - I went thru the steps of unplugging it - let it sit for about 10 minutes --
Then, hold down Power & Menu keys on STB when you plug it back in --
When you see the word 'boot' hit the up/down arrows until you see n dl
in the LED display - then hit 'ok/select' on the STB
This started the 20 min + download and reinstall of firmware, etc
CAUTION: This MAY also delete your DVR settings and programs according to others - not sure if mine did because I didn't have anything programmed in it yet
Consider yourself WARNED! :)
I did this around 9am Sunday morning - finally by about 4pm everything seemed to be back to normal -- not sure if what I did is what fixed it but it probably didn't hurt --
My suggestion - do the above steps and leave the STB alone for the day -- see if that fixes it - seems as if there may be an issue with some of the new 3412s
and maybe it just takes a long time to get everything reinstalled from the head end -- just a suggestion
When is Comcast going to understand they're spending so much time and energy (translation: money!) in these boxes that appear to be very, very unstable.
Sad that they are the only game in town (other than satellite - don't get me started on that-ha!)
Good luck all
Scott
filthymitten 01-04-06, 09:21 AM I have this box hooked up to my 42" Magnovox plasma via componets.
The problem I am having and wondering if anyone is having is that sometimes when I change a channel, there is a white line left across
the entire screen. The line seems to correspond with lines that were on the comcast menu before I chose the new channel.
The only way I can get rid of the lines is by turning the tv off and on.
Is this a box or tv problem ??
thanks
traderyodoa 01-04-06, 05:03 PM FOR THOSE BATTLING THE HDCP LOCK-OUT PROBLEM WITH THE 3412 - SOME UPDATES
When I spoke at length with Comcast they said they were aware of the problem and plan to work it in an upcoming firmware release. I was told that it will take a good while since they are overloaded with work as people make the shift to digital connections.
I also snapped off a letter to Digital Content Protection LLC and got the following response from them. Don't throw out those HDMI cables, but you don't need to keep them at the ready either! Never hurts to pummel on these folks just so they understand how many people are being effected by their not-ready-for-prime-time releases.

jimmerpro 01-04-06, 06:26 PM I did the same thing - unplugging the power and holding down the two keys and then doing the "n dl" and it downloaded for about 25 minutes.
I did this last night - no issues after watching the TV (Sony LCD) for a while. I started a couple recordings on both tuners to see if it worked. Went to bed. Got up and about all the guide was loaded for the first time since I had this model box. I thought I was on easy street. Then I started setting up scheduled recordings. I got about 5 in then the darn thing rebooted again - the guide was all cleared again. I had eight hours of no rebooting - but I want this 100% working. My wife said it has rebooted several more times today. I'm really losing my mind with this.
Comcast has us esculated - a "senior" tech is supposed to come out Friday.
Let me know if your boxes crash again.
Anyone - Let me know if there is anything else I can try. Thanks. Jim

jimmerpro 01-04-06, 07:37 PM I'll check the signal strenghts right after dinner......what should they be?

You have Poor, Fair, & Good.
All 3 of them should be Good.....
jsonpic 01-04-06, 07:41 PM I just reset my box. It took about 20 min. Everything is good so far. I didn't lose any of my recording. I will let you know tomorrow if anything has reset. But it seems to be working for now.
hdtvbostonma 01-04-06, 07:47 PM Some questions about diagnostic menu values:
My OOB status is as follows: SNR: Between 19.1(Fair) & 21.3 (Good), AGC 18% (Good)
In-Band status: Tuner 1: SNR: 34.8-35.7 (Good), AGC 78% (Fair)
Tuner 2: SNR :34.9-35.8 (Good(, AGC 78% (Fair)
What do these values mean?
How will the affect my PQ, audio quality, audio/video synch?
Will a 2-way amplifier help, if needed? (What brand/model)
Here's how my house is wired w/co-ax: It splits when it comes in the house, on line to another splitter, to my modem and 3412. The other 1/2 of the split when it comes in to the house feeds 2 TV's w/o stb's, and 2 tv's w/stb's (No DVR). (The wire from the side of the house to the 1st split is pre-digital, all cables to my 3412 & modem are fairly new from Comcast.)
Is this too much?
I have an overall excellent HD pic, but some channels are better than others.
Are my values too low?
What, if anything, should I do?
THANKS!!!!!
SCANPA-----ANY THOUGHTS?
jimmerpro 01-04-06, 08:33 PM Scanpa: (or anyone who can help with my box rebooting)
My OOB:
SNR is jumping in the 20.3 to 22.1 db range and says good.
AGC: Hanging at 16% and says good.
In-band status:
Tuner 1: SNR 30.7 db fair; and AGC: 79% Poor
Tuner 2: SNR 30.4 db fair; and AGC: 82% Poor
It seems like I have an issue. Is this something that only the cable company can correct? Is there something I can try? I never had an issue with my older Motorola box. This is my main TV so I don't have it splitting much at all from the main feed in the basement. I do have a signal booster for the upstair TVs but that is not on the same "string" as my main TV. There are a growing number of 5 second error counts: all listed as correctable. The numbers jump up and down. Thanks. Jim

Looks like a low signal situation, remove all splitters from the line, if you have any, and try again, otherwise you'll probably need a service call.
That signal booster should be at the point of entry where the cable feed comes into the residence, before any splits.

Keenan is correct, it sounds like there are too many splits in the cable.
Every time you split it, your pretty much cutting the signal strength by 3db - 7db.
the 6412, 3412 all split the signal inside to feed 2 Tuners. This requires a very strong signal to reach the STB.
Motorola makes a signal booster that works great with all of there DCT series STB.
Just google " Motorola 484095-001-00 Signal Booster" for info...
You must place this at the Cable line drop where it enters your Home. It is a 2 way Bi-directional Amp so it will allow the STB to talk with your cable head end.
dic9999 01-04-06, 09:39 PM I just moved to Atlanta and had received a 6412 when I moved in. The box immediately malfunctioned. Today, it was replaced with a 3412 which appears to be operating relatively normally. However, I had connected the 6412 to my Denon receiver and then to my Samsung 56" set with component cables and a digital optical cable. The new 3412 won't accept the optical cable. It just won't fit into the unit.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is there another form of optical cable which I need? (I hate to have to spend $35+ just to plug it in) If there is another form of cable, will it fit into the Denon?
It appears that using analog audio cables that I can't get Dolby digital sound, just 5.1 channel stereo.
Thanks for the help.

David,
The 3412 uses a regular Toslink Fiber Optic Optical Cable. I use it on my 3412, and it is the same cable that was used on a 6412 unit. Make sure you remove the little protective plastic cover on the tip of the cable.
Hi guys,
I'm trying to figure out if there exists a Motorola DCT 3400 HD-only box, without DVR like the 3412 or 3416.
I'm pretty sure someone in this forum mentioned they had one, but can't find the post, and Comcast was not helpful.
Thanks.
I tried doing multiple searches and have come up empty. I was hoping someone knew if it is possible to access the hard drive of my Comcast motorolla dct3412 from my computer. I have a firewire and USB port. It would be nice to pull off recordings and place on my computer. Thanks for any information.

No!
The last Hi-Def non DVR STB by Motorola that Comcast carries is the single tuner DCT-6200 STB
The DCT 6208 is the same DCT w/ a 80gig HD + DVR.
the DCT-64xx series & the DCT-34xx Series STB all have 3 models, all 3 have DVR.
the last 2 digits in the DCT number show the size of the HD installed.
xx12 = 120 GB HD
xx16 = 160 GB HD
xx32 = 320 GB HD
There is no 6400 or 3400 model. (no HD/DVR)

People have found ways to connect to and record from the box, but I haven't heard of anybody having any luck accessing the harddrive. I believe I heard that the storage format is proprietary. This is probably also the reason we haven't heard of anybody putting a larger harddrive in the stb.
bulabula 01-07-06, 01:23 PM I'm glad to have found this site - there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained. I haven't waded through all the pages of this thread and intend to do so. But I have to admit I'm not real happy with my DCT3412.
I'm a new Comcast Digital customer in Anne Arundel County MD since last Monday (02Jan) and am on my 3rd DCT3412 already. I hadn't had any problem with analog comcast in the 10 years I've been with them.
The first installer(s) came early (that was nice) and hooked the box up (shoddily I might say - the component cables were just dangling on it) and left. And to think I gave them a tip? My bad. They didn't even give it a full check out - they told me they did. The box did seem to work ok, exept for some stuttering on HBO; and that On-demand was dead on arrival. There was a "communication error". I called the comcast help desk and the head end could not communicate with the box. I was told I could return it to the local office for a new one.
I returned it the next day - Tuesday (03Jan) just before they closed at 5pm; hooked it up turned it on, let it boot up and initialize; and found that it was worse than the one I had turned in. No HBO/STARZ, nor did On-Demand work. Nor could the head end communicate with this box either.
I agreed to burn a day of vacation to schedule a date with cable guy to show up on Friday (yesterday 06Jan).
Tech arrived at noon (early from the 1-5 time slot). The nice young man checked signal strength throughout the system and found they were marginal in a couple of places and replaced 2 splitters - signal strength was good. 3412 box #2 still didn't respond to the head-end; so he hooked up box #3 and it did respond (woo hoo...!!). He told me the original problem was both due to the splitters and box(es).
The On-demand finally updated itself in a couple of hours and I was able to scroll through the menu's and review the movies etc. before dinner - but I didn't watch any of them.
I had some friends over last night after dinner to watch something on On-Demand with the new Sammy HDTV, and guess what - On-Demand was DOA again. This time the dialogue box said it was a "META-6" problem and to call the local comcast phone number. I did and the comcast help desk person was unable to communicate with the box yet again. They were more than happy to schedule yet ANOTHER service call during the day.
I'm not sure what my next step is (my patience with the comcast product is growing thin). The 3412 revolving door in my house is getting squeaky - and its not been a week yet. Since the DVR part works and I do see HBO and Starz, maybe the universe is telling me I don't need On-Demand or PPV.
Do I live with it as-is? And let comcast lose some revenue generation from ppv etc? On-demand sounds pretty neat, but since I've never had it before I may not even miss it.
I refuse to take another day off of work. I may delay that service call for a week until next weekend.
I see there are some comcast techs that post here; and I respect their comments on this thread. Do I hang with you guys, or should I go with the dish? Or keep my fingers crossed waiting for Vz FIOS TV? I am a satisfied Vz DSL customer. I can receive OTA signals from Baltimore and DC, but I want more than the local channels.
Help.

You said the repair / install tech checked signal strengths. Did he tell you how much signal loss to each connection? How is your house wired?
How far from the drop post to the house is the cable? How far from the entry point of the house is the first splitter & DCT located?
How many splitters do you have? The more splitters, the lower the signal strength at each point.
If the STB is unable to talk to the head end, then it is a signal problem.
Have comcast re check there cable at all points and replace if needed.
Good Luck....
I've had my pair of 3412s for a couple of weeks now and (knock wood) everything has been excellent. Recordings have recorded, PQ is outstanding across the board, no reboots, glitches, etc., until yesterday. I had started populating my Scheduled Series list some more now that the silly Holiday repeat season is over and in order to clear up some conflicts, I accessed the Series Priority list and did some rearranging. It was going fine until I had about 19 series scheduled. Then, when I tried to rearrange the priority and confirm, the box froze up. There was a little yellow light next to the word "Remote" on the 3412 face and it wouldn't go away. The first time I waited about 20 minutes before pulling the plug and rebooting. I accessed the Priority list again, reorganized and again, the same thing. Third time, same thing. Now, having come from an HD DirecTivo, I was used to waiting 10 sometimes 20 minutes for the box to reorganize shows once I made changes, whether it be to the amount of shows recorded or rearranging the priority list. But this just froze and I was wondering if it's a known issue and if somebody else had experienced this before? If it's simply a matter of taking a long time to reorganize information, that's fine, but I thought 20 minutes was more than enough time before rebooting. Thanks in advance.

No, the tech only said the SNR's were good. Not sure what you mean by how is the house wired. I have three 2-way splitters installed - all comcast installed.
From the entry point (@/near the NID outside) its 17 feet to splitter #1 (2-way splitter). SNR was good at that point. He did not look at the entry point, or take any readings from there; nor did he think is was worthwhile to look at the entry point or at the street junction (I asked).
It's another ~20 ft cable to splitter #2 (2-way). SNR was "good" there too.
From there its about a 14 ft run upstairs to the final splitter #3 (another 2-way). The output of that splitter goes to the 3412 and the tv using 24" long cables. SNR was good there too.
Since I had good signal and communication earlier, I'm thinking its HW related (3412) and not cable/splitter.
I understand transmission line loss theory etc.. from my work with shipboard fire control and search radars/signal processors; but my house isn't going to accept any reduction in splitters.
If I do schedule another appointment, and when they call to ask if they can come early, I'll say no and ask them to eat lunch first so they can spend some time making sure my installation is satisfactory and that they're not in a hurry to leave and have lunch with their gf.... :(
EDIT: I just found the diagnostics page and everything (SNR) was GOOD; with the exception of AGC - that was listed as FAIR.
jbrahms 01-09-06, 09:14 PM Got my 3412 about 3 weeks ago from Comcast Atlanta. Have been a longtime Comcast/Comcast Digital customer (prior to that AT&T, prior MediaOne).
Have been enjoying the heck out of the DVR functions, and after having read through this entire forum I have 30 second skip working great as well as having "Mute" assigned to HDTV Zoom. Thanks to those who provided that info. (That mute thing when the box is "off" is a major pain in the arse. Yeah, I know, leave the box on.)
Thanks to the folx who proivded it for that info. Now, I have a comment and a question.
Question: Today my box freaked out. Came downstairs from home office from lunch, powered eveyrtnig up, and... nothing. Got the Guide, but no picture. Huh, weird, maybe there's upstream problems. No matter, I wanted to watch a DVR recording anyways. After watching that, "normal" service resumed. Powered everything back on, and again no picture. Fiddled with it a bit (on/off/on/off, watch a DVR, on/off, etc) and while wating on hold for Comast support I came ot the following conclusion: The box was farked, and only by going in to watch a previous DVR and then stopping it would I get normal picture. Turning hte box "off" and ripping the power cord out and reinserting seems to have fixed that. What the heck was going on?
My next step was to reset it per Scanpa's instructions, but it's owrking now. If it happens again that's the next step.
Comment: Unlike a lot of folx, both of my firewire ports AND the USB port are showing as "INST" in the diagnostics menu. I tore apart my office and wouldn't you know it I don't have a straight USB A/B cable that doens't have mini-DIN on one end. ARGH! Closet full of cables and something simple is stopping me from hooking up the laptop to the USB. Will get one tomorrow and report back.
As everyone else has already tried firewire, I won't try that.
Thanks guys.

The picture not coming on when you take the STB out of standby mode, is the main reason to always leave it on. But if you turn it off, All you have to do is play a DVR to restore power to the video card. No need to unplug and loose all the Guide info...
The ports are installed, however the current Firmware does not support the devices. (at least in my area!)
Kabanero 01-09-06, 10:09 PM Received my brand new never used 3412 today (it replaced old 6412/2005).
During the first couple hours had audio hick ups and pixalation of video on HD channels (may be due to downloading process).
Right now everything seems to work ok.
Guide, menu and everything else response much faster than 6412.
I like it better than 6412.
Had to run to Walmart to buy HDMI-to-HDMI cable. Works great.
Also have Toslink cable connected from the box's digital optical out to my Sony A/V receiver optical in. Get DD 5.1 surround sound to receiver along with stereo sound to HDTV via HDMI cable with no problem.

jimmerpro 01-10-06, 10:05 PM I noticed that the signals on the second tuner are weaker than tuner 1. Is this normal? Some times the second tuner gets so weak that the picture pixelates and sound cuts off. I see uncorrectable error for the second tuner too.
Should I get another box or try another solution?

Lower signal readings on Tuner 2 are normal, usually 2-3dbs lower, it's just like a splitter, only internal.
Your readings indicate a low signal strength to the STB. If you have no other splitters on the line and still get those numbers you should request a service call.
jimmerpro 01-10-06, 11:08 PM I played around with splitters - I don't think that is the issue.
The second tuners SNR is always about 5dB less than number 1. Doesn't that seem like a big difference?
1 = 33.5 db and AGC 54%; Good and Good
2= 27.1 dB and AGC 43%; Poor and Good
Also - what is AGC? This seems much lower than my last box (although it list as good).
Thanks,
Jim

I checked HDMI menu but there is nothing to adjust.

Santhon2 01-12-06, 08:07 AM I have had a 3412 for almost a month now and have had to do a re-boot 3 times so far. The box works fine after the boots but then it seems to loose the second tuner or something after a week or so.
I will have recordings scheduled and when i go in to review them they have the red dot with all of the options, then a few days later they will change to a red dot with a slash thru it or disappear all together.
Also when this happens the swap button does not switch to the second tuner but only brings up the info screen for that program.
Comcast has checked the box and reported nothing wrong that they can see from their end. The only fix for this is to do a re-boot and download everything which takes about an hour and then everything works.
The box also at times makes alot of noise like it is either a cooling fan or the drives are doing something when it is off.
Since the box works after the boot i dont belive it is the problem, any ideas??

The Box is never OFF unless you unplug it. It is always on. Always leave the STB in the on mode. Putting the box in the off/Standby mode only causes problems with the Video ouput & Recordings ect.
You need to swap out the box. There is a problem with the 2nd. Tuner. If the 2nd. tuner goes off line then you will not be able to record 2 shows at the same time or swap to that tuner. It has become unavailable.
More then likely the 2nd. tuner board has a problem or fault.
Replace the box, is your best and safest bet....
Santhon2 01-12-06, 10:01 AM Thanks, I will try leaving the box on at all times and see if that works.
Dont you think that since the box works after the re-boot that it wouldnt be the problem or am i just hoping i dont have to have a service call to bring another box?
We cant pick them up in Atlanta, they have to schedule a service call.
HD Rookie 01-12-06, 10:05 AM Replace the box, is your best and safest bet....
The box is probably shot as scanpa has mentioned, but there is one other easy thing you can try. I had a similar problem a couple months back and was able to fix it. At the time I had a list of series recordings which were not in sequencial order. There was a gap in my numbers from a previous series recording removal. I tried to fix/reorder the list a 100 times and nothing worked, the gap wouldn't go away. Finally I deleted all series recordings (I think I also unplugged the box), then added them all back. I haven't had a problem since.
You should be able to find additional info on this problem in the Comcast 6412 thread. The 6412 is very similar to your 3412 in all respects - except it has analog ability.
Phil Tomaskovic 01-12-06, 10:11 AM The Motorola 3412 & 3416 Digital Only STB should be out soon and available to Comcast customers who have a all digital cable system, or systems that Digitally Simulcast all Analog Ch.

Does "Digital Only" mean I have to subscribe to a digital package for this DVR to work? I just have the standard cable pkg now; digital is another $10 for channels I could care less about. (some other CHicago suburbs don't think even offer what I have; the cheapest package offered (other than basic) is the digital classic.

I don't think any of the dvr boxes have color adjustments - someone correct me if I'm wrong. The adjustments are made in the TV. You may need to search out more info on the Maxent. Al

I have the same problem with my Olevia Syntax LT30HV, you can adjust color from component but not dvi. In my case the color is not saturated enough. I have two DVR's and only one component input so I am forced to use the DVI for one.
On a lot of LCD TV's, the concept is that the DVI is for computer input not TV, and its up to the computer to provide the color adjustment. The other typical issue is visible data lines on the edge since the set doesn't overscan on the DVI input (that it expects connects to a computer).

No. If you had the locals only package, you will still see CBS on channel 2, but the feed to the stb would be digital, instead of analog.
Phil Tomaskovic 01-12-06, 10:43 PM so I'm pretty unhappy with my 6412 (goofed up another recording again tonite, when I set up a recording on 2 channels at the same time, it accepted both schedulings but only recorded one). Is the software (stability) in the 3412 any better that I should have them swap them? Any advantage that the 3412 gives me?
Thanks
Phil Tomaskovic 01-12-06, 10:50 PM One other question... If I ask for a 3412 and keep the existing 6412 for another month to give me time to get the shows off its hard drive that I want to keep, do I need the cable feed into the 6412 for it to be operational for playback only? I would guess not, but nothing would surprise me in how these things are programmed. I figure swap the current coax cable going into the 6412 to the 3412 and just leave the 6412 hooked up to the tv set via hdmi.
mproper 01-12-06, 10:51 PM Has anybody noticed "stuttering" HD recordings on the 3412? I've only had it happen so far on Surface (NBC) and also the ER that was on tonite (also NBC). Sound is fine, but the video is jerky and looks like it's skipping frames. This is a constant problem throughout the recording.
Could this be the feed, or a problem with the DVR? I'm probably swapping this box for another anyways due to my problems with SD over component, but this is one more thing I've found to be annoying about the DVR.
Looking forward to the release of the Tivo Series 3, that's for sure.

It happens when I switch from a digital (100-999) channel to a non-digital (1-99) channel (All are converted to digital on this STB, but 1-99 are originally analog, for now). Switching between two 1-99 channels or between two 100-999 channels fixes this problem.
I have had two 3412 STB's do this.

The DCT-3412 STB does not convert any signal to digital. It can only decode Digital. There is no Analog Tuner in the 3412. The signal it gets for Ch 02 - 999 are all 100% QAM 256 encoded DIGITAL.....
If you have the 3412 available in your area, then the local cable plant / head end is sending out a duel signal for Ch. 02 - 100. 1 Analog & 1 Digital.
Kabanero 01-13-06, 12:02 AM Have my new 3412 since Monday. Everything was ok for a day. Now I am having some issues.
1. When watching (and recording) Red Wings hockey on Tuesday night on OLN (channel 34) video was pixelating, freezing, audio was dropping out. Was hard to watch. Other channels seemed ok.
2. Today, on Thursday, I noticed that when I try to REW the video of live channel, or try FF or REW the video of recording on hard drive, video goes like slide show of still pictures, takes several minutes to FF or REW through one minute of video.
What is going on? Any suggestions?
I just got this box on Monday, three days ago.

Take the box back to comcast and get a new one.
One other question...
At least with the 6412 boxes, you NEED to have the cable running into the box to play video stored on the hard drive. I've heard on these theads that someone has taken their 6412 box to another house on the same headend, and they could access all the recordings, and premiums.
But you do need to have your headend's signal coming into it in order to play back your recordings. Sorry.

1. OLN has had the odd problem broadcasting nationwide. I've noticed a couple of hockey broadcasts that have been out-of-sync.
2. On my similar 6412, FF & REW on some channels are so slow as to be not-useful, and speeds vary depending upon what else the unit is doing (if I FF or REW while recording an HD program on the other tuner, for example, it's often slower; on GOLTV, almost always the FF at it's highest setting goes barely faster than just watching it). I use the 30 second skip which you can program into the remote, and the 15 second replay to substitute, it's not as good but works.
johnnyjt 01-13-06, 03:59 PM I emailed Moto about the high color HDMI output and they emailed me back and
said about 12.23 upgrade that should fix it! I have to contact Comcast and see if
they can d/l to my box! I got my fingers crossed!

totalownership 01-14-06, 01:50 AM Hey guys I've noticed the past few pages people talking about stuttering video on these boxes. I was just watching the Knicks game in HD and have been having problems with some stations having stuttering video. At halftime I went into the "service" menu and notice that my 4:3 override was set to off. I set it to 480p and the stuttering went away. The stuttering seemed only to really affect my HD premium and INHD channels. ESPNHD was fine. What 4:3 override has to do with a 16:9 source is beyond me but it did fix the problem.
Other problem I was having was the sound still going through the optical even after I turned the cable box "off". To solve that problem I stumbled across the fact (trial and error) that if you want to silence the box you have to watch a recorded program first and WHILE watching it then turn off your box. The audio will stop. I'm pretty sure this was all mentioned before but just in case.
Never turn the STB to the standby (off) mode. The only thing it does is cause problems with the video & Audio output system...
The STB is never off anyway, unless you unplug the power cord.
Kicker|MyU 01-14-06, 06:14 AM I guess Moto must be shoveling these things out the door as fast as they can because by judging by the posts here and my personal problems with it, well, there is no QA as far as I am concerned.
1st two boxes would lock up when using the DVR functions like rewind or FF
This last box will "pause" for 1 second, just the pic mind you, the sound does not stop or st-udder, every 10 - 30 sec for the first 5 -10 minutes of a recording.
If I am watching a live show and it starts recording a show on the second tuner, the live show will do the same,
What do they have for software on these things? Windows 98!?
Another gripe, I have had RePlay TV for years, you connect to them and DL the guide and firmware updates via a phone line or your internet connection, it's over in seconds.
These stupid boxes that already have a DOC-sis modem built into it, can take over a whole day to get the channel guide! What the heck!? They really need to change how they do this, it such a waste and dumb way to do it.
Anyway, I am getting tired of finding all the series recording I want to do each and every time I have to swap these boxes out, not to mention that they hardly ever have one at the office for a swap, I have to schedule a tech appt. if I want to make sure I get a replacment....................again.
mothball01 01-15-06, 01:28 AM Not Enabled on mine. AFAIK Not on any of the Comcast ones.
Use the diagnostic menu to check the status of all your ports.
power off then press select / ok within 2 sec.
picked up the 3412 stb from Comcast (WA state) today to replace a defective 6412 stb (DVR was failing to record properly - not saving recorded shows)
the 3412 seems to be working properly so far
checked ethernet status and it reports "INST" soes this mean that I should be able to access the device from a pc via an ethernet connection?
has anyone done this yet?
mothball01 01-15-06, 02:06 AM Here's the specs for the "3400" series (which is what the 3412 is). This PDF includes a picture of the back of the 3400 (i.e, the 3412). ...
And yes, it of course has analog audio out (as well as digital).
where did you find this ?
i have been scouring the internet for an official literature on the 3412
thanks
mothball01 01-15-06, 02:44 AM Are you using the SWAP button to switch tuners?
Perhaps the 2nd. Tuner has gone offline, if so, then you will need to do a Factory Reset, to restore the 2nd. tuner.
Power off the STB and press ok/select wothin 2 sec. and bring up the Diagnostic page.
Go down and Check d06 and hit ok, does it show info for both tuners? (it should say page 1 of 2 at the bottom.) Use the down arrow key to view the 2nd. tuner.
Does your swap function work ?
i have asked comcast about this 3 times with the 6412 and 3412 boxes i have used / am using and they tell me the feature is not active (washington state - pierce county)
is there a secret to activating?
i checked the diagnostics page and it says both turners are active

You are absolutely correct. But Motorola is not solely to blame. You can add Comcast and GuideWorks (owned by Comcast) to the mix.
All they want to do is get them out the door so they can raise their RPU. Or, in layman's terms... Make More Money!
I had the chance to use a 3412 the other day since a relative just got one. I noticed the following compared to the 6412:
1. Seems slower overall.
2. The Progress Bar is herky jerky.
3. The FF REW is quirky.
4. One 30 minute recording used 3% of the Hard Drive.
5. It seemed to run cooler.
6. It had FW 12.22
Based on what I saw I'm not too sure I want to rush out and swap my 6412 for a 3412.
Overall I was disappointed that the 3412 seemed slower and even more quirky than the 6412.

The Microsoft guide s/w you and I have swaps tuners automatically when required, but I have found no way to force a swap other than by selecting a second program when the first tuner is recording. (I.e., if one program is being recorded and you enter another channel number, it will continue to record using the original tuner and swap tuners to display the channel you request.)

"INST" simply means the hardware is installed. The firmware doesn't support it yet. Note that the USB port is also "INST" -- but it isn't active. At least not in Washington.
I plan to get a DVR for my parents by Chat.
From limited reading, I think the 3412 is more reliable then 6412 PIII. Is that true?
BTW, I have had excellent luck with my 6412 PI, but they are probably out of those.
I just don't think they will even know what 3412 is. If I say HDMI, they could end up with a PIII.
jimmerpro 01-17-06, 10:31 PM Any thoughts about my issues with the second tuner? It does not happen all the time. I'm not sure how much but I've seen about three times in two weeks - it last hours. But does have I played around with splitters - I don't think that is the issue.
Thanks,
Jim

AGC: Auto Gain Control
Higher AGC means the STB is working harder to maintain a usable RF signal.
You want a low number here.....
jimmerpro 01-17-06, 10:58 PM I should be more clear. The 2nd tuner is not bad all the time. It happens (at least when I'm able to watch or record) only a few times a week so far. It does last hours. When the #2 tuner picture is clear it has a dB over 30; with in 2-3dB of #1 tuner. Our first box had a DVR crash - but we went over 1.5 years with out issues. I can't think of any change except the box. Comcast seems clueless. I guess I need to get a box swap. But how do my numbers look in my other reply? Thanks!!!! Jim

there fair, but they should all be GOOd for the box to work more towards that 100%. As I have stated in a previous post, you need to try the MOTO SigBooster
I had the same problems as you, I still had fair's & poors even after the Cable signal strength meter showed the signal was good on the coax......
But with the signal booster, I have all GOOD's w/ very low AGC levels and no signal problems on any tuner......
jimmerpro 01-17-06, 11:30 PM Thanks Scanpa. What about those evil splitters I have to use in parts of the house?
The cable company has the main one in the basement going to a 5-1000 4 way with each say 7dB out.
Then I have one splitter at my HDTV to use PIP (third option if recording - maybe I need a better plan there) that is 5-1000 3 way; 5.7dB. I don't have one splitt going to a VCR anymore. *I am about to try to remove that splitter as test now.
A couple other splitters around the house are two way. Most are 5-1000 but I've seen 5-900; why choose 900 over 1000? The output on those is 3.7db.
BUT....like I said; 90% of the time the second tuner seems to be getting a good signal. Last night and tonight were bad. Last Monday night was bad. In between was fine. Could it be someone's cable usage in the neighborhood? But why does tuner 1 stay so fine? And - I never had this problem until I got this box just a couple weeks ago to replace one that we had for 1.5 years with not signal issues.......just the DVR crash.....I'm losing it with this.......oh well. Let me know if you or anyone can think of something.
jimmerpro 01-17-06, 11:33 PM Sorry I forgot to mention - I did get the Moto signal booster last week and without it the picture is a thousand times worse on tuner #2 (when it is having "issues") and tuner one also has a worse signal. So something really changed......it must be the different box.......right? Can boxes have bad tuners.....????

Like I said; this is only the third bad night since we had the replacement box. I didn't check the SNR on the old box because we never had picture issues for 1.5 years. Tomorrow tuner #2 will probably be working fine. I bet it will be working fine when Comcast gets here. The guys on the phone and the guys on that come out don't seem to know half as much as the people on this forum. But the do know how to swap boxes. I have to hope it's the current box - it's the only change in the equation since we noticed problems with tuner #2.
jimmerpro 01-17-06, 11:53 PM And one last crazy tid bit from my PC days. Hit it. I tapped the back of the box where the tuners should be and #2 changed; it briefly said Carrier lock:no and SNR and AGC blanked out for a few seconds. All the while tuner one stayed the same. I'm tired.....but this crazy trick makes me think even more it's a tuner issue inside the box. Night, night..... ;)
henrytd 01-18-06, 02:08 AM I've been following this thread in anticipation of getting the 3412, and it has finally arrived - installed this morning. We have an earlier HDTV DVR STB running in the basement (more than a year old, single tuner, but I can't figure out the model number), so this is a second box, connected to an upstairs HDTV in parallel with a TiVo DVR that we've had for years.
We had a new drop from the box to this location installed last week just to be sure the signal was strong enough for HDTV, and it's tested well within the acceptable range. I haven't been able to test it in action yet, however.
Why in parallel with the TiVo? Simply because of the questions on the reliability of the 3412. We don't want to rely on it completely, so we'll continue to have our favorite programs recorded on the non-HDTV TiVo until we're confident that it's going to do the job.
Now for my question: It's a 3412 - 1. The Comcast installer said they (Comcast of Lower Merion, Montgomery County PA - outside Philadelphia) just started getting a version 3 of this STB, which I hadn't seen mentioned on this thread yet. Does anyone know what the differences between 1 and 3?
Apparently if I feel I really need the latter one, I can grab my STB and take it to the Comcast office, and trade it.
Thanks,
HTD

there is no 3412p3 box. he is refering to the 6412p3 STB
the 34xxp1 STB is a Digital only Box. (decodes digital cable signal only)
the 64xxp3 STB is a Analog/Digital Box (decodes both analog & digital cable signal)

Does this mean that my 6412 is receiving and using the digital simulcast ? In that case would I see any improvement by switching to a 3412 - they're now avbailable in my area. Thanks for any help.
How do I check to see if I have all digital or digital simulcast?
How do I check to see if I have all digital or digital simulcast?
2 ways.
using the tuner that shows the DD or DD5.1 emblem in the ch. info bar.
if you see either the DD or the DD5.1 then you have a Digital signal for that ch.
it only shows this info on tuner 1 via the "info Key" first check a known digital ch (101-----) then check Ch 02 -- Ch 100....
or you can use the diagnostic menu:
To access the diagnostic menu, start with your STB on.
turn off the STB and press ok/select within 2 sec.
use the up / down keys to select a menu, then press select/ok to view
To exit the Diagnostic screen just hit the power button.

Yes! your area has ADS.
The 3412 is a digital only cable box, where the 6412 is a Analog/Digital box.
The 3412 has most of the 6412p3 quirks and problems, plus it seems to have some slugish DVR control problems.
The 3412 is smaller & lighter then the 6412, does not have the RCA or USB inputs or the smart card slot on the front panel. It has a fan in the bottom of the unit and runs about 96 deg. compared to my 6412p2 & P3 that run from 104 deg. to 130 deg....
As to any inprovement, well that would be up to you to decide. some report the PQ is softer, but I think the PQ on the SD ch. is much better then the 6412p2 & 6412p3....

Great! I was under the impression that not all shows are DD or 5.1 but I infer from your answer that all digital channels have at least DD. So, using the first option, I can check any channel from 2 - 100 for DD emblem. Thank you.

Yes, as soon as you hit Pause, you have to keep clicking the pause key... If you stop, you will need to hit play, and start over again....
Have heard at the comcast office that this is one of the bug fixes in the next DVR firmware that should be in Beta soon. F/W 12.24b

I stopped by this morning for the exact same question. My 3412 replaced a 6412 I had for over a year. Last night I tried using the set by step while watching LOST and I could not get it to consistently work. I also had the same problems with slow mo. I have plenty of practice with this from my 6412, and the 3412 definitely does not behave the same way.
I also notice a delay in response when resuming play from a paused state, as well as a jump forward of a few frames when the playback resumes.
Tonight, I'll try the immediate pause key after pausing to see if I can get frame by frame to consistently operate.

Hoops2U 01-19-06, 10:24 AM I read thru this thread. Thanks for all the great info. I think I am gonna opt fpr keeping my 6412 for now. One question though. I do have stations 2 - 100 sent to me in digital format. So does the 6412 process them w/ it's digital or its analog tuner?
i have the 6412 III, anyone else have any issue w/ the HDMI input . My monoprice hdmi cable falls out of the box all the time. but not out or the plasma.

Here's some questions for those with a 3412 from Comcast.
I have the Sony KDF-E42A10, (native resolution 720p).
1) What do most people have the cable box output set to....720p or 1080i?
Right now I have it set to 1080i, because I'm not sure why, but to me setting it to 720p makes the picture look not as clear.....maybe it's my eyes.
2) I would think setting the cable box to 720p would cause the least amount of conversion. Is this true? Because the TV converts everything to 720p....any 720p signals (ABC/FOX) would basically pass through the cable box directly to the tv. Any 1080i signals would get converted ONCE by the cable box, then passed to the TV as 720p. The other way would result in a double conversion for all 720p broadcasts.
3) #2 sounds fine....of course if the scaler in the Moto box is good? Any ideas on how good the scaler is in the 3412?
4) I'm not sure why this happens but when I go into the Motorola menu to set the output (the white screen with black text), when the output is set to 1080i, the text looks really clear. When I set it to 720p....it doesn't look as clear. Is this to be expected? Should I be concerned?
5) When viewing the guide on screen.....it also seems that in 720p is doesn't look as clear, does this sound right?
6) Last question.....when you record content, does it get stored at whatever resolution you have set when recording.....or does it not matter. Meaning, does it store the recording as whatever it's broadcast as, then the box outputs it in the output format. So I should be able to record a 1080i show and a 720p show. Then use those as test cases, switching the output settings to see which is better? Or does the recording saved on disk get saved as whatever the box was set as at the time?
Sorry for all the questions....hopefully someone can answer.
-Kevin

Tuner 2 does not seem to show this info on any of the current 64xx or 34xx STB...
The DD or DD5.1 Audio is there, just not the LOGO.....
I read thru this thread. Thanks for all the great info. I think I am gonna opt fpr keeping my 6412 for now. One question though. I do have stations 2 - 100 sent to me in digital format. So does the 6412 process them w/ it's digital or its analog tuner?
If your Account is setup to do ADS, then the DCT-64xx STB will always use the Digital feed over the Analog Feed.
Just look for the tuner that shows the DD or DD5.1 logo in the ch. info bar and then go to ch 02 - 100..... If you see the DD or DD5.1 logo your on a Digital Ch.....
i have the 6412 III, anyone else have any issue w/ the HDMI input . My monoprice hdmi cable falls out of the box all the time. but not out or the plasma.

HDMI needs to be revamped from the drivers, the protocals to the cable harness & Jacks & Plugs....
-Kevin
#3: The Motorola scaler used in the DCT STB is not that great.
#6: The Program is stored in the same format & Res. as it was recorded in.
Hoops2U 01-19-06, 12:32 PM From HD Beat:
"Your old Moto 6412 DVR from Comcast might soon be replaced with state of the art HD set-top boxes from Panasonic. The new cable boxes will encode in both MPEG-2 and H.264. It has USB 2.0 for connecting digital cameras and MP3 players. Best of all though, these boxes comply to the OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP). This is the most important feature, even more then the 250 GB hard drive, as it allows people to interact with their HDTVs a bit more then ever before including using a single remote for a Comcast box and Panasonic home theater equipment.
Think of OCAP as an operating system that interacts between the devices on the cable network: video on demand and a variety of interactive services. This system has been in test markets (New York; Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wis.; Lincoln, Neb.; and Waco, Texas later this year) for some time now and it seems to be going well."

So it's stored in whatever resolution it was broadcast in, regardless of what your output type is set to?

a) Beyond the absence of the analog tuner in the 3412, are there any other significant differences between the 3412 and the 6412?
b) I understand that Comcast has been making the transition to move from analog/digital to all digital and believe that this has been completed here in Detroit. Does anyone know if the 3412 stb is available to customers here in Detroit?
c) I have a Sony kdf-42we655 lcd rptv, Sony Dream System htib and subscribe to Comcast's HD programming package with the HD dvr...is there a compelling reason to switch from the 6412 phase iii to the 3412?
Thanks in advance...

They will not be replacing the Motorola DCT STB. Comcast has over 5+ years left on the current deal with Motorola. They may be made available in addition to the Moto, as long as there configured to work on the Motorola Cable system.
Perhaps there going to be used / or replace the Scientific-Atlanta set-top box & Cable system....
victor_c26 01-19-06, 03:28 PM Is there any fix to the "Mute" problem while keeping the STB turned on?
I know that turning the box "Off" will fix this, but I'm recording a 2:30 Hour movie right now, and can't shut down the box. :\

To program a protocol into the comcast silver remote:
Press "Cable" device key Then Press & Hold "setup" (3 sec) Enter 9-9-4 Press "setup" once (do not hold Type in "0-0" then the protocol # 141
for a total of 5 digits (STB Mute control)
Then press the button you would like to use for that function
(I used the HELP button)
If it was programmed correctly then the Cable Light will flash 2x
AGC: Auto Gain Control
Higher AGC means the STB is working harder to maintain a usable RF signal.
You want a low number here.....
Really? What you're saying makes sense, but I have the following:
Tuner 1: ~53% AGC, "Good"
Tuner 2: ~43% AGC, "Fair"
If a lower % AGC is desirable, aren't their ratings reversed?

a) DVI output replaced w/HDMI, no CC slot, noisier - perhaps others.
b) My 6412 required reboot nine times in six days, so yesterday Comcast of Canton dropped off a 3412 (first CS supervisor I talked to said none were available in Detroit area, but second person I spoke with "Quincey" took my order for one w/ next day delivery).

Do you know the code combination for the 30 second skip function?
And one final question: Is there anyway I can use PIP to assign a tuner to a certain video output?
Thanks. :)
Do you know the code combination for the 30 second skip function?
And one final question: Is there anyway I can use PIP to assign a tuner to a certain video output?
1) How To Add 30-Second Skip
The following technique can be used to map an unused or unneeded button on the "silver" remote to the 30-second skip command. Current versions of the iGuide DVR software will skip forward 30 seconds into a recording when this command is sent. The '15-second back' button can be a good choice, since PgDn already provides that functionality. Another good option is to reprogram the 'A'/'Lock' button if you don't need that function; you can feel both buttons with one finger and move between them without looking.
Press the "Cable" button at the top of the remote to put it into Cable Box control mode.
Press and hold the "Setup" button until the "Cable" button blinks twice.
Type in the code 994. The "Cable" button will blink twice.
Press (do not hold) the "Setup" button.
Type in the code 00173.
Press whatever button you want to map the 30-second skip command to.
2) PIP is not active in the 3412 & 6412 STB. All Video outputs put out the same signal.
victor_c26 01-19-06, 05:22 PM Thanks again for the info. :)
amajamar 01-20-06, 08:47 AM Can someone help me with a remote control question?
Currently, I do not have any playback device (VCR or DVD) associated with my TV and STB. I leave my box (3412) on all the time, so I keep the remote on tv mode so that when I hit the Power button it shuts the TV off. The problem is, with the remote set that way, the DVR commands are sent out via AUX and not CABLE. I can use the menu up, down, left, right buttons to control the DVR, but that is inconvenient to me.
Is there a way to program the remote to send the DVR functions through CABLE instead of AUX when the remote is set to TV?
Thanks in advance!! :)

number9 01-20-06, 10:09 AM I stopped by this morning for the exact same question.
I was able to get frame by frame working using this method. If I left the playback paused for more than a second I would have to restart the playback with the play button.
Hopefully as scanpa mentioned, this fix will make it's way to us soon.
Can someone help me with a remote control question?

Do you have the silver Comcast remote? If so, open the battery cover and remove the batteries and look for a white sticker that has the model number.
If you do have the silver comcast remote, then the DVR controls are the 9 buttons under the ON Demand button.
chipvideo 01-20-06, 07:14 PM Just got comcast cable installed yesterday. I am getting stuttering video watching my hd channels. Not only on recorded stuff but on the live stuff as well. I assume this has something to do with the hard drive always being recording or something to that affect. Is there any way to stop this stuttering?
Using the 3412 with microsoft enhanced in the Seattle market. HDMI hookup.

It has nothing to do with the Encoder's or the HD, sounds like a Signal problem.
Power off the STB and press ok/select within 2 sec. to access the diagnostic page.
look in the OOB sub menu & the IN Band sub menu and tell us what your signal strength is on OOB, Tuner 1 & 2

All good quality cable and stuff. He said it was the best signal he has seen anywhere. I also have the cable comming out of the surge protector before it is split.

Not really. Just wish they would get a better guide. I just switched from dish. Their hd channels look like crap compared to what I have with comcast now.
Oh is there any way to get use the sata or other ports on the back to an external drive for bigger storage? I see you can go to a pc, but then how in the heck do I watch it back on my tv without having to let the pc output it with the video card. I dont have a htpc so I dont want to go out and spend $500 just for a sound and video card.

Comcast w/ 6412p3 & 3412p1 using I-Guide do not have the SATA port Active, also comcast has suspended there future plans of supporting the SATA port & renting External Hard Drives.
maggiefan 01-21-06, 11:28 AM chipvideo, try running your cable right to the DVR, and not going through the surge protector. That could be your problem, some of them don't allow two way signal passing.
chipvideo 01-21-06, 01:22 PM I figured out the problem. Went in and changed the colorspace to 4:4:4. Yep that was it.
I didn't even think about looking for the hdmi stuff until today. Now I just wonder if it will take that colorspace considering it is a hdmi/dvi cable. I do know that on my upconvert dvd player it will only allow RGB if dvi is involved. DVI only allows for 8 bit video. I might have to play around and do a strait hdmi cable and see if I can get even better looking color. I already have a cable card installed and it looks absolutely stunning compared to the set top output. Nice to have a cablecard as it allows me to record 2 shows on the dvr and watch a different live feed at the same time.

I have never heard of a surge protector not allowing a two way. Oh well been using mine for a while and would never let any chance of any corruption get in my settup. I suggest you guys who don't use surge protectors to do so. There is a good site that sells PUREAV and they are as good as monster, but at least half the price. Bestbuy sells it for $750 and this site is just under $200 but they are on backorder. I guess you could contact and find out when they come in.

I paid $350 6 months ago so this is a steal. I just orderd the batterbackup for just under $300 as well. I ran out of outlets on the surge protector so I needed something else and figured the battery backup will be good for my tv and dvr.

2 Things.
1) Do not use a surge protector / power-strip with the STB Power Cord. It must be plugged into the wall directly.
UNLESS
you have a Power Conditioning Surge Protector. The Motorola DCT Series STB do not like any change in Voltage. Regular Surge protectors do not keep the voltage frpm changing.
2) Some cheap styles of F-Style Coax Filtering used on power strip surge protectors have 1 way diode's to keep the rf signal going one way.

I don't understand this comment. Plugging the STB directly into the wall does not keep the voltage from changing either. Could you elaborate on this?

Ok, let me put it another way,
If you do not have a Power Conditioning surge protector, then Motorola says to PLUG the STB directly into the wall socket. Surge protectors that are not power conditioning will sometimes cause a variable voltage and this will cause the STB to reboot.
How do I change the output setting from 720p to 1080i on my comcast box 3412?

How do i get to the dvr to clear this even though it doesnt show any recordings?
I hope the new box is better, i am about to give up on the 3412.

I did another re-boot and this seems to have corrected it back to being 10% full with one recording showing.
Do you think the reformat will fix the other problems i have been having? Or do you really think the box is shot?
I have a tech coming out Saturday but not sure if he even knows as much as i do from this forum, he is bringing a new box just in case.
steve4459 01-22-06, 03:14 PM Does anyone know if the Motorola signal booster (484095-001-00) can hurt picture quality or internet cable modem performance? too much of a signal can always cause PQ & other problems.
The amp will not effect the modem as that band range is just passed through.

I'm unaware of the specs of the signal booster, but in general, an over-amped signal can create connection problems for a DOCSIS modem as well.
I had problems with my cable modem disconnecting from Comcast at least once a day. A tech came, looked at the specs of the incoming signal, and added an attenuator (RILA-6) just before the connection to the modem. It eliminated the problem entirely. When the speed was later increased by Comcast from 4Mbps to 6Mbps, I had intermittent issues. Removing the attenuator then eliminated those issues.
I have the following specs reported by my modem; I would assume the download stream using ~728MHz and 256 QAM could put it in the affected range of the Motorola signal booster?
Forward Path:
Signal Acquired at 728.750 MHz
SNR: 35.0 dB
Received Signal Strength: 4.3 dBmV
Micro-Reflections: 31 dBc
Modulation: 256 QAM

urnojfk 01-24-06, 12:20 PM I just picked up my 3412 from Comcast last night and the only included literature from Comcast was about the set-up of the unit (wiring, etc..) and the DVR functions. There was no mention of how the silver remote could be programmed with a code to run my Samsung HD-ready set (power and volume are what I'm looking for primarily).
I did a search of this forum, but couldn't find any specific detail. Can anyone assist? Is this remote capable, and if so, where will I find codes for Samsung televisions? Also checked the Comcast site - no info.
