View Full Version : Recent Rock/Metal DVD-Audio/SACDs?
dlelewsk 11-22-05, 04:38 PM I recently introduced some friends and roomates to the wondors of DVD-Audio and SACD, all of which sounds absolutely amazing playing off my Onkyo-SP1000. What I'm looking for is any good rock/metal discs to play. Any recomendations? Anything from the late 80s-90s to now would be preferable.
Anything I'm missing/should look at?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

I only have this album on CD, so I don’t know how the DVDA sounds.

dlelewsk 11-22-05, 05:07 PM Can't believe I missed STP. I was actually a big fan of that album and have it on regular CD as well. Heading over to Best buy to see if I can find one right now.
Thanks,
Dan
david*roy 11-22-05, 05:20 PM Bon Jovi's Last 2 Albums released on DualDisc are DVD-A. I belive the album titles are Slippery When Wet and their latest release "Have a Nice Day"?
AALLOCA 11-23-05, 12:05 PM I think NIN Downward is pretty good and also I know Megadeth Peace Sells is avail in Dvd-audio. Haven't heard that one though.
woofman 11-23-05, 02:49 PM Megadeth: Peace Sells.... DVD-A /DTS **1/2
Lamb of God: Ashes of the Wake Dual Disc ***1/2
NIN: Downward Spiral/With Teeth Dual Disc ****
Mark Leaman 11-23-05, 04:32 PM What, they don't like Deep Purple???
They're not exactly metal, but both DVD-A discs from Porcupine Tree can be pretty aggressive at times; In Absentia and Deadwing.
You might also want to check these out:
Widespread Panic - Don't Tell The Band
Joe Satriani - Strange Beautiful Music.
IwantmyTHX 11-23-05, 04:47 PM Been looking for some as well,as my new player comes in today. I already have NIN's, Metallica, Megadeath.
While not excatly metal Queen's the Game on DTS(played it at 96k stereo) is great sounding and does rock. DSOTM is a crowd pleaser for a lot of metalheads as well.
outlier2 11-23-05, 05:13 PM I think we could replace "best" with "any". Very slim pickings for Hi Rez heavy stuff.
Try the Blue Man Group DVD-A "Audio".
It's not metal, but it'll qualify as rock.
Rachael Bellomy 11-24-05, 01:11 AM Order out to Canada or the U.K. for:
Super Furry Animal's Love Craft SA-CD
RPWL's World Through My Eyes SA-CD
The Cardigan's Long Gone Before Daylight SA-CD
Domestic, try CD Baby's .com for the Suitcase Pimps' Love Is Grand SA-CD
Porcupine Tree's Deadwing will be a crowd pleaser, even if they never heard of them.
dlelewsk 11-25-05, 12:00 AM I'm going to give a listen to some clips from Porcupine Tree as everyone here seems to love them, going by the several threads and recomendations I've seen.
Thanks for the suggestions, you guys are helping me find those albums that somehow seemed to slip through the cracks.
Thanks,
Dan
Jason James 11-26-05, 12:29 AM So far I have on order:
Godsmack - Awake (SACD)
I'm pretty sure you're referring to "The Other Side" unless you know something I don't (which would be cool -- I like "Awake").
Other titles not yet mentioned:
Queensryche - Empire & Tribe DVD-As
Iron Maiden - Dance with the Devil DVD-A
Disturbed- Believe DVD-A
Staind - 14 Shades of Gray DVD-A

You're right, it is 'The Other Side', sorry for any confusion there.
dlelewsk 11-26-05, 04:15 PM Formatted the list in the first post, and added several more selections I've found. Hope this helps anyone looking for these CDs.

How does the 5.1 mix of Empire sound? I always liked that cd and didnt know it was out in multichannel.
scooterdog 11-27-05, 10:16 PM Empire is an excellent DVD Audio disc. Great recording and good use of the surround channels without being over barring. I find it to be one of my top ten dvd audio disc.
dirk1843 11-27-05, 10:20 PM The DualDiscs you metioned, do they have true DVD-A mixes or are they DTS/DD/LPCM, etc??
dlelewsk 11-27-05, 10:51 PM I don't have all of the discs yet, I'll update as I pick them up.
nameinuse2 11-27-05, 11:31 PM The Tea Party - Illuminations. It's a DVD video, but with a high bitrate DTS surround mix by the band's own Jeff Martin. Has some interesting surround use and (to my ears at least) way more clarity than CD.
On the other hand, whatever you do, avoid the Alice in Chains Greatest Hits SACD - especially if you're a fan. Just plain terrible surround mixes.
Not sure if it fits your category, but Oasis: What's the Story Morning Glory in SACD
Not a very good MC mix, so save your money.
nameinuse2 11-27-05, 11:57 PM The DualDiscs you metioned, do they have true DVD-A mixes or are they DTS/DD/LPCM, etc??
The NIN discs are true DVD-A (The Downward Spiral is doubleplusgood!).
The only other dual-disc I have on the list is Lamb of God - Ashes of the Wake, the DVD side is DD.
Anyone have AC/DC Back in Black dualdisc? How's it?
I'm pretty sure the AC/DC Back in Black DualDisc isn't dvd-audio, but rather just regular dvd 16 bit 48 khz PCM. Or as Sony calls it, "enhanced Stereo."
dlelewsk 11-28-05, 10:19 AM Mudvayne discs are both DD encoded 5.1. Updated the list accordingly.
Paperboy2003 11-28-05, 11:36 AM I know Alex has been mixing them, but when are the RUSH disc's coming?!?!
HT Nitwit 11-28-05, 12:47 PM Here are 2 I have not seen mentioned that I have on DVD-A
Brides of Destruction - Here Come The Brides (DVD-A)
Motorhead - Overkill (DVD-A)
launche 11-28-05, 03:52 PM I don't want anymore bass...guitars...ever. Someone recommended a Linkin' Park DVD-A disc "Reanimation" to me as a good listen. 20 tracks later as my ears are bleeding and my fillings have all come undone, I think I have all the bass I need, thank you. I couldn't turn it down low enough...good gawd. This was truly a aural assault... I doubt i will ever listen to this Disc again, it wasn't bad but i was not prepared for this. I'm only 32 but this was my clue that I'm not hip anymore. The only song I thought I knew was "In the End" which I was ready to enjoy and the re-animated that song to some crazy beat and scratch, rip and repeat, cut creator or whatever, I thought I was losing my mind or the disc was scratched or something.
They said it was an aggressive mix, no kidding...this band never let up. I couldn't tell track 1 from track 20. That was the most sonically damaging experience my ears have ever been through...I am scrambling to find some Carly Simon to get back my equilibrium. Was this the stuff they used to smoke Saddam out of hiding, man...this disc goes in the box along with John Coltrane and Sonny Rollins (who I both love) "Tenor Madness" disc that sounded like they were both in the jungle killing elephants. I only listened to a few tracks on that disc and realized it was well beyond me, I figured maybe I'm not old enough to appreciate this...I'll check back in 10 yrs maybe I'll get it then. With this Linkin Park, clealry I'm not young enough to appreciate this disc and I'm afraid I'll find some kid I don't like very much and give it to him. I swear to you it feels like my ears are dripping blood.
MaliciousBraham 11-28-05, 05:30 PM just found out by total accident that Foo Fighters most recent album In Your Honor was released as dualdisc. Dont know how the exact formatting or quality is, but I am trying to find a copy to see.
I bought the regular cd version since I didnt know there was a dualdisc one...
edit: lowres... shoulda seached first :o

edit2: well, the first disc is lowres, the second however is highres DVD-A.

ChrisPC 11-28-05, 08:58 PM I don't have a lot of recent albums on DVD-A, but I just found 3 Doors Down's last album, "Away From The Sun". It sounds great. BTW, it's also available on SACD.
I'll also put in another vote for Queen's "The Game"; it's probably my favorite DVD-A.
I also recommend "A Night at the Opera". That DVD is worth buying for "Bohemian Rhapsody" alone.
Oldies but Goodies:
The Doors: "L.A. Woman"
Fleetwood Mac: "Rumours"
The Eagles: "Hotel California"
Can't believe I missed STP. I was actually a big fan of that album and have it on regular CD as well. Heading over to Best buy to see if I can find one right now.
Thanks,
Dan
I have it. I love the album since it originally came out. However, this is not a very good sounding DVD-A and not what I consider a very "discrete" mix. Go for the Porcupine Tree DVD-A's for the real deal.
hotguy8289 11-29-05, 01:24 AM The only song I thought I knew was "In the End" which I was ready to enjoy and the re-animated that song to some crazy beat and scratch, rip and repeat, cut creator or whatever, I thought I was losing my mind or the disc was scratched or something.
Thanks launche! You made my day! :D
drziggles 11-30-05, 04:09 PM Judas Priest - Angel of Retribution is only enhanced stereo, but sounds quite nice--heavy as hell. Just got the dualdisc of System of a Down - Hypnotize (also enhanced stereo), and I couldn't tell any difference as compared to standard redbook.
On the down side, neither of those CD sides are recognized by my computer, which means no iPod action--i'm getting sick of that, especially when the dualdisks are so skimpy.
On the other hand, the nine inch nails DVD-As are incredible! Amazing surround sound mixes--highly recommended.
While it is nowhere near metal, my favorite "show off" DVD-A 5.1 is Flaming Lips - Yoshimi vs the Pink robots. The mix is the most aggressive i've heard, and it's a great album, very creative.
nameinuse2 11-30-05, 11:06 PM Has anyone picked up the Living Color - Collideoscope DVD-A ? How's it?
NightHawk 12-01-05, 06:07 AM With this Linkin Park, clealry I'm not young enough to appreciate this disc and I'm afraid I'll find some kid I don't like very much and give it to him. I swear to you it feels like my ears are dripping blood.
I'm 49 and I love this DVD-A. I use cold water to clean up the blood.
The ELP DVD-A is a good mix. Lucky Man in particular sound great.

You're a better man than I am, It's been three days since I listened to it and my ears are just getting back to normal. I think it is a good mix, I liked the bass alot but the sound overall just wore me out, I have sensitive hearing to begin with. Maybe in a few weeks I'll give it another shot.
outlier2 12-02-05, 12:08 AM This is definitely a LOUD disk. In fact it is the loudest thing I own. If my neighbours ever pissed me off this would be the disk I'd play to get even. :D
That being said, it is a very enjoyable recording. I'm 38 and I like this mix. Other than the ubiquitous Black Eyed Peas I do not own a single piece of Rap, Hip Hop, Gansta etc. as this is not the type of music that appeals to me. But this weird fusion of musical genres and the power of this mix is really effective on my system.

hoodaman 12-05-05, 11:41 PM Within Temptation - The Silent Force (DualDisc)
It's symphonic Gothic Metal from the Netherlands and that's where I had to order it from. It's in transit but I'm not allowed to listen to it until Christmas as it is a gift. I believe the site says the mix is surround sound
ThePrisoner 12-07-05, 06:19 AM Iron Maiden - Dance with the Devil (DVD-Audio)
FWIW the Iron Maiden title is Dance Of Death (DVD-Audio) ;)
SACD's not mentioned:
Alice In Chains - Greatest Hits
Journey- Escape
Journey - Greatest Hits
Journey- Escape
Journey - Greatest Hits
I wouldn't exactly consider Journey 'recent'. These stereo SACDs worth it even if I already have the CDs?
clayface-UK 12-07-05, 03:54 PM Here are some more for the list.
Motorhead:Ace of Spades(DVD-A) -The Daddy!
Dimmu Borgir: Death Cult Armagedon(DVD-A) -Top notch Black Metal from the Nordic wastelands.
Nightwish:Once.(DVD-A) -Operatic Metal. So insane it's brllliant
All of these are available in the UK. Apart from Motorhead they may be a bit too "European" to have made it across the pond.
clayface-UK 12-07-05, 04:14 PM Found some more:
Ozzy Osbourne: Ozzfest Live 2002 (SACD)
Incubus: A crow left of the middle (SACD)
Fear Factory: Transgression (Dual Disc)
Foo Fighters:One by One (DVD-A)
Mayhem: Chimera (DVD-A)
Biohazard: Uncivilization (DVD-A)
Corrosion of Conformity: America's Volume Dealer (DVD-A)
Insane Clown Posse: Shangri-la (DVD-A)
Jeepfan 12-16-05, 06:07 PM Nameinuse2,
I have the Living Colour Collideoscope DVD-A. I think it is one, a great album by one of my favorite bands, and two a really good DVD A. I just listened to a few tracks from this album again 2 days ago after replacing the Samsung 841 DVD player with a 950 to to check multichannel audio playback.
Prozakk 12-16-05, 06:28 PM Incubus/Insane Clown Posse
Worst live/worst group.
be_deviler 12-16-05, 09:40 PM It's not SACD or DVD-A per se, but Collective Soul is coming out w/ their first concert DVD, recorded w/ the Atlanta Youth Symphony Orchestra. Just caught the sneak preview on DTV and I gotta say, if any music was intended for SACD or DVD-A, this is it. Sounded like it could be an amazing sonic performance.

if you're into hardcore (and anti-capitalism i suppose), you can't beat Refused - "The Shape of Punk to Come" on DVD-A. great album...great mix.

I'd really like to hear their second self titled album on either DVD-A or SACD. The bass in the first track "simple" just kicks...

Agreed. I wish a LOT more rock genre releases would include DVD-A and/or SACD. Collective Soul in particular would be just amazing. Nickelback is another band I'd be interested in hearing in hi-res.

nebborjk 12-20-05, 12:57 PM You may want to list Metallica as: Metallica - Metallica (the Black Album)
Razvanel 12-20-05, 03:38 PM Within Temptation - The Silent Force (DualDisc)

If you like Within Temptation check out Xandria - Ravenheart, also European gothic. Ravenheart is available on hybrid stereo and 5.1 SACD.

How could you guys not have included Santana's recent releases Supernatural and Shaman on DVD-A!
How could you guys not have included Santana's recent releases Supernatural and Shaman on DVD-A!
Hmm... Maybe because it's neither rock nor metal? :D
Hmm... Maybe because it's neither rock nor metal? :D
<FLAME SUIT ON>
Okay, so you guys consider "Blue Man Group" as ROCK/METAL but not Santana?
So let me guess you also won't consider Stevie Ray Vaughan as ROCK either huh, with his Texas Flood on SACD, or heaven's forbid his live session recording with Albert King on SACD because they're really just blues guitarists. Along those same lines, I guess Eric Clapton (Reptile - DVD-A) and his joint recording with B.B. King (Riding with the King - DVD-A) are also not ROCK to you guys. I guess if ALL of the songs on an album are not "ROCK" then the whole album isn't.
kissthesun 12-24-05, 12:55 AM Deep purple's Machine Head is a must have IMO
Now whats the deal with RUSH? this is the first I've heard of it, but I'm excited as hell now!
Rachael Bellomy 12-24-05, 04:52 PM Now whats the deal with RUSH? this is the first I've heard of it, but I'm excited as hell now!
Rush SA-CD's were announced years ago and I lost faith long ago. Their little covers EP was supposed to be a hybrid too and, of course, it wasn't. Don't get your hopes up....
Jason James 12-24-05, 11:44 PM FWIW the Iron Maiden title is Dance Of Death (DVD-Audio) ;)
D'OH! :o
I put this CD away after one listen because the compression was unbearable. I wonder if the DVD-A is any better.
BZiggyZ 12-26-05, 12:55 PM Here are some more for the list.
Motorhead:Ace of Spades(DVD-A) -The Daddy!
Dimmu Borgir: Death Cult Armagedon(DVD-A) -Top notch Black Metal from the Nordic wastelands.

I've got to try and find an import copy of Death Cult Armagedon on DVD-A. Progenies of the Great Apolalypse is one of the greatest metal songs ever recorded. If you can get past the lame 'scary' lyrics, the music is incredible! The entire album was recordered with the Prague Philharmonic Orchestra creating a really rich, beautiful yet heavy sound. Good Stuff.
Here are some more for the list.

Yep, I need to find the Dimmu Borgit DVD-A also. I haven't heard any of Nightwish but I'll see if I can find some.
emorphien 12-26-05, 03:47 PM Blue Man Group - Audio (DVD-Audio)
Crystal Method - Legion of Boom (DVD-Audio)
Linkin Park - Reanimator (DVD-Audio)
NIN - With Teeth (DualDisc) (DVD-Audio)
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (SACD)
Queen - A Night At the Opera (DVD-Audio)
Of all the ones you mentioned I have these (or rather my roommate owns the NIN disc).
Blue man group is fun, good definition and they play with the channels nicely. Pink Floyd is great, I also have this album on vinyl and this is the only other way I find that I can enjoy it. The bass is very smooth and well blended.
Crystal Method always leaves me wanting a bit more oomph but it's good, and NIN is a nice disc too.
The Linkin Park disc is one of my favorites though. While not my favorite band every now and then I enjoy some loud, energetic music and this disc has that. It's loud, punchy and deep. I also have this on CD and there is simply no comparison in the depth of the bass and the attack. Definitely a disc worth having, I got it at Media Play the other week for $13.50 or so since they're closing down.
dlelewsk 12-30-05, 06:33 PM I've been bogged down moving to a new apartment in Hoboken and between painting and looking for furniture I haven't been keeping tabs on this thread. I think I got all the additions/corrections in. Keep'em comming!
Thanks guys!

Eric_Connelly 01-02-06, 12:33 PM I have checked out that Shape of Punk to Come but for some reason thought it was a compilation.
I have Metallica on the way. Crystal Method came the other day and I was pretty disappointed in it all together. Linkin Park is a good CD but too 'rappy' for me. I put up with the stuff they mixed in before but this is way over the top.
Another one to check out is REM's Around the Sun on Cd/DVD-A in a single package. Although its not completely my tastes mix wise its an excellent DVD-A.
I've been worried about buying some DVD-A's and SACD's because I wanted to find out first off if they are really produced for the format. Instead of just slapping the regular CD tracks resampled with some pretty pictures. I feel some SACD's are done this way.
emorphien 01-02-06, 03:15 PM Yeah Crystal method really could be quite a bit better
BZiggyZ 01-11-06, 05:30 PM Got the Dimmu Borgir DVD-A. I ordered it from a French Company (it's not available in USA) and it arrived in less than a week for about $30 shipped.
Anyway, it's phenominal. The orchestra is much more prominent in the 5.1 mix than the CD version and it even includes an orchestra only mix for 'progenies' and 'eradication.' When the guitars, bass, and low strings in the orchestra play in unison, it rattles my room! Thanks to clayface for the head's up on this one.

I just went and picked this up then (here in Australia).
"Oh, our store in Dandenong has had one in stock since June".
 These things should sell far better than that.
A-Roc29 01-18-06, 05:07 PM Anybody have "Mastodon - Leviathan"?
I've heard parts of the CD & it's seems like the type of metal that would really shine in hi-rez.
drziggles 01-18-06, 09:28 PM Leviathan is a great album. The DVD has a few songs in Dolby Digital 5.1, if I remember correctly. While the sound has greater clarity, there is very little going on in the surround channels. Nothing to write home about, but hell, it's Century Media, not even a major label...
On a side note, just got the DualDisc of Talking heads Remain in Light. Man, that is a great album, and the mix is phenomenal! There are so many different layers in the music that it works really well in 5.1. Initially it wouldn't play in my Pioneer 578a, but thanks to the forum I was able to get the firmware upgrade and voila! Unfortunately, add it to the list of DualDiscs that my computer doesn't recognize...that is really annoying.
w8liftr 01-21-06, 03:31 PM Great list.
emorphien 01-21-06, 05:29 PM Might I make a suggestion for your list and put a number next to each disc for the number of times it is recommended in this thread?
For instance Legion of Boom is OK but I really don't find it that good and I'd like to see the spread. Perhaps only one person would recommend it but another disc might have 10 people recommending it.
Prisoners 02-11-06, 12:10 PM There are two Deep Purple sacds out: Machine Head and a live recording that is only available in the UK (try amazon uk). They both sound excellent and are worth the expense. Blue Oyster Cult released Agents of Fortune a couple of years ago but I haven't heard it yet. I have not seen this in stores in quite some time-it might be out of print.
JBaumgart 02-11-06, 11:33 PM There are two Deep Purple sacds out: Machine Head...
Love the opening track - Highway Star - at high volume! Hard to believe it was recorded, what, 20 years ago?
gillcup 02-12-06, 12:30 PM Love the opening track - Highway Star - at high volume! Hard to believe it was recorded, what, 20 years ago?
Actually, Machine Head was released in 1972 making it 33-34 years old depending on what month it was recorded.
save your money on the Megadeth Peace Sells..... I bought it quite a while ago and DM needs to hand over the surround mixing to someone else. its not done very well. I am not too bad when it comes to liking a disc but this one was listened to once and never listened to again. thats how bad the mix is!
Dire Straits Brothers In Arms is "Rock". suppose to be very good. gota pick that one up.
Chris Gerhard 03-09-06, 10:12 AM I just received Sham 69 "Best of - Cockney Kids are Innocent". This compilation of music from the British punk band is really good. I also own Widespread Panic "Don't Tell the Band" and agree with the mention that it is worth consideration as is their "Ball" DVD-A. Unfortunately all of these are Silverline releases with less than stellar DVD-A fidelity and uninspired surround mixes but the selection of high resolution rock isn't great and all of these are good albums in my opinion. If you still like to listen to The Clash, you might really like Sham 69. In my opinion, they were better than The Sex Pistols. The fact the music is deliberately noisy and sometimes rough sounding means Silverline couldn't screw it up too bad. Many of the Silverline DVD-A rock releases are available as inexpensive cutouts and sound pretty good to me provided it is music I like.
Chris
Chris Gerhard 03-10-06, 08:23 AM Widespread Panic "Don't Tell the Band" is topnotch for a Silverline DVD-A in my opinion and better than "Ball" which is more in line with my other Silverline discs in terms of quality and surround mix. Even "Ball" is worth consideration if you like the music. It seems many here completely avoid Silverline and even blame Silverline for the apparent failure of DVD-A because of so many poor quality releases. Although I do agree if someone listened to a poor quality DVD-A and made a decision to avoid the format, a potential customer could be lost, I don't think the impact was significant. The format doesn't have widespread acceptance because the consumer just didn't care in my opinion and CD is good enough for almost everybody I know. I have purchased a bunch of Silverline discs and most are ok, a few poor and a few very good to excellent. I wouldn't mess with the Front Row live releases but there are some hidden gems available now at cheap closeout prices in the Silverline/Immergent/Myutopia label DVD-A catalog.
Chris
For anyone who has the Mudvayne dual discs, are these much better or noticeably better than the CD's (which I already have)?
chris: thanks for that info. I have been wondering if the Billy Squire Live DVD-A front row by them is any good. can anyone confirm this disc sucks ?
Chris Gerhard 03-10-06, 10:04 AM For anyone who has the Mudvayne dual discs, are these much better or noticeably better than the CD's (which I already have)?
I don't have them but I do own some DualDiscs that don't have high resolution surround and can say I would never spend any money to replace a CD with one of these. The PCM stereo will either be a very subtle improvement or no improvement over the CD version. I don't think "Lost and Found" even offers Dolby Digital 5.1 surround but my memory may be faulty on that point. DualDiscs without DVD-A aren't anything to get excited about.
Chris
If it's a Sony/BMG DualDisc, you won't be seeing DVD-A. Basically you generally get a few video clips and an 'Enhanced Stereo' recording (16bit/48k)
Looking at the list, the Audioslave DualDisc only contains "Enhanced Stereo". There is no 5.1 mix.
I would like to add:
REM - Document
REM - Green
REM - Out of Time
REM - Automatc for the People (purchased this in Hoboken, dlelewsk)
REM - Monster
REM - Adventures in Hi-Fi
All except Document are available as Double Discs - which includes a seperate redbook CD and a seperate DVD-A
Thumbs up for the Foo Fighters 'In Your Honor' dual disc. Would've been nice if the DVD sides of both discs were hi-res (only disc 2 is DVD-A), but it's still a keeper for me. At least it's "recent".
Nightwish:Once.(DVD-A) -Operatic Metal. So insane it's brllliant
I've picked this up several times (cover intrigued me) but not knowing who or what it was, I didn't buy it.
There is a small group of HR enthusiasts here, and the problem is (apart from a lack of titles available locally) if an album sits on the shelf longer than 2 weeks, chances are it is not very good, and this has been there over 6 weeks and this store doesn't simply re-order to have stock of HR/MC titles...
Mark
burntdog 03-13-06, 01:26 PM Nightwish's Once is a fantastic record in two channel. But I haven't heard good things about the MC version. Nevertheless, as a fan, I'd like to get it, but can't find it anywhere - online or otherwise. Does anyone know where it can be had?
Death Cab for Cutie's Transaltanticism album is 2 channel SACD.
WriteSimple 03-22-06, 11:10 AM I've been hoarding all the more interesting DualDiscs that I can find over here.
My last four purchases are NIN's With Teeth & The Downward Spiral. Great discs though I find that I listen to With Teeth more on the nano. But when I'm listenin' on the sofa, it's TDS.
Two more notable releases are from the UK - Snow Patrol's Final Straw and Keane's Hopes & Fears. SP is more punkish and Keane is like if Elton John is part of the band.
Great Dualdiscs - all with High Rez stereo and multichannel.

Yeah, but beyond Mofi's Little Richard/Here's Little Richard Sack-Dee, what else is there to talk about? Maybe the last few, stray DVD-A's...which are....? I don't know as I have so given up on the bIG fOUR.
Well, there's a nice fusion albm from Chesky... Coryell, Bailey & White's live, recorded in a N.Y.C. church, Traffic. The stereo mix is nice. I haven't heard the M/C. My 2900 lost it's 5.1 spot to a Toshiba HD-DVD player.
Maybe, the last few Depeche Mode SA-CD's are coming out. Is there anything else...? A stray Warner DVD-A or Dual-y Disc...? As they say, there ain't much meat left on that bone....
Aerosmith's 'Oh Yeah!' SACD sounds great.
Wonderful sonics and smoother than a cheerleader :)

That one may have been recent when the thread started but surely isn't recent now. I did just buy it and think it is good although I haven't heard the CD to compare.

I ordered four of the Depeche Mode SACD hybrid discs from WOW cd...I also picked up Stone Temple Pilots - Core (DVD Audio) ,Steely Dan - Two Against Nature (DVD Audio), Utopia - Bootleg Series, Vol. 2: KSAN, 95FM Live '79 (Dual Disc), Bob Marley and the Wailers - Soul Rebels (DVD-Audio), Gary Numan - Anthology (DVD-Audio), and Todd Rundgren - Bootleg Series - Live At The Forum, London '94 (DVD-Audio). I also plan on getting the Kraftwerk multichannel disc next along with anything else I can find...Eric

I just recently bought an OPPO 970hd & have been somewhat pickey with what I order. I did order Depeche Mode - Violator SACD/DVD (r2) Remaster from CD-Wow also a few weeks ago. I have to say the DVD version sounds slightly better than the SACD disc. (My only complaint is I can't listen to the real DVD Audio as the OPPO either freezes or plays silence.) Doesn't matter though, this is definately an album for everyone who liked late 80s rock.
It should definately be on the list. The SACD sounds very high & a bit off to me, but the DTS on the DVDA is incredible... I got goosebumps listening to it, the way some of the sounds crawl around the speakers is just like nothing I've ever heard before.

I don't think my version had a DVD-Audio track but I will check it out on my PC. The DVD isn't recognized in my DVD-Audio player because it's region 2. I may rip it down on my pc and burn a DTS dvd (region free) to compare against the SACD version.Eric

What program allows you to burn dts audio tracks? I'm aware of the process to backup the tracks, but I don't know what program to use to make a disc.
You may be right, there may not be a DVD-A portion. I'll have to pop the dvd in my computer & see if theres any files in the AUDIO_TS folder. Many thanks. =)

I will mess with it and let you know in a couple of days...I will use either dvd shrink or clone dvd or something like that and burn with nero. I will get back when I'm done testing!Eric

Violator has both a CD and DVD disc. The CD includes the 2ch mix plus the SACD 5.1 mix (can't remember if there's a 2ch SACD mix avail). The DVD contains some video footage plus the DTS 5.1 and DD 5.1 mixes. Pretty sure no DVD-audio tracks available.
Nachosgrande 10-20-06, 11:43 AM The Who - Tommy.
Mix is phenomenal. Pete Townshend did a spectacular job mixing the guitar and horn sections. The bass and drums lay down a solid foundation. This is how rock DVD-A should be mixed. Reference disk.
Wouldn't suppose anyone would know of a place online I can buy the Korn - Untouchables SACD?

nevermind there's a thread on this disc already.
Picked up The Offspring - Greatest Hits (DualDisc) yesterday. The DVD side has the album in 5.1 surround + a couple short videos/interviews. Unfortunately the disc doesn't appear to conform to DVDA standards & I believe might actually be in the Video format.
Nachosgrande 11-17-06, 03:05 PM **I think the master list at the beginning of this thread needs to be updated**
The Doors Perception Box set is getting great reviews - all of their 6 albums in CD and DVD-A
The Who - Tommy.

You're right, it is a DVD-V. How is the sound quality?
Chris
Two rock titles out since this Summer that as far as I ca see haven't been mentioned are Pere Ubu: The Modern Dance (Dual Disc, DVD side is 2ch and 6ch MLP 24/96, afaik UK release only), and Bonnie 'Prince' Billy: The Letting Go (DVD Audio 24/96 6ch).
jwood966 02-10-07, 08:16 PM Listening to the 5.1 mix right on the DVD-V side of that disc right now.
In my humble opinion it certainly sounds more "fun" than the straight stero mix. They have some fun throwing the effects around in the surrounds and really enveloping you with their anthemic choruses. I'm not going to comment on its sound quality versus.. say SACD or DVD-A.. or even CD. I'm no audiophile.
Just saying I certainly enjoyed the 5.1 mix... seemed they had as much fun making it as they do composing their songs.
humble setup: 5 Velodyne CHT speakers, Onkyo 674 rcvr, Oppo 971 dvd player, Hsu VTF2-mk3 sub
Chris Gerhard 02-11-07, 09:14 AM I have not noticed Pete Townsend/Ronnie Lane "Rough Mix", DualDisc with DVD-A mentioned. It most likely will be the last DualDisc with DVD-A as the DualDisc format appears to be going bye bye for DVD-A rock releases. It is a pretty good 70's album I missed during the 70's.

After reading your post I just went to DragCity and ordered "The Letting Go" for my wife but they didn't have a good description of it. They just called it DVD-A. Any idea if it is a Dual-Disc or a true DVD-A?
peteyglad 02-21-07, 06:42 AM This list is great. I had no idea some of these were out there. I just ordered Biohazard, Fear Factory, Corrosion of Conformity, Linkin Park, Alice in Chains & Bjork. The Bjork looks out of place with the others, but hey, gotta keep the wife happy! Thanks for the list!
Bit more pop/rock, but Pink - I'm Not Dead (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Im-Not-Dead-DualDisc-nk/dp/B000EMSUTC/sr=8-2/qid=1172063268/ref=pd_ka_2/203-3688368-7216747?ie=UTF8&s=music).
Fabulous album, fabulous 5.1 mix, but only DVD-Video DualDisc with 384kbps DD, alas.
It seems that she's one of those U.S. artists much bigger overseas than in their homeland, like the Scissor Sisters. Not sure the DualDisc was even released in the U.S.
5.1 rock music not mentioned:
Bob Dylan SACDs, Porcupine Tree - Stupid Dream DVD-A, 2 Frank Zappa DVD-As, 2 Grateful Dead DVD-As (American Beauty, Workingman's Dead), David Crosby DVD-A (If I could Only Remember My Name), Yes DVD-A (Fragile), Elton John SACDs, Police SACD (Best of), Doors Perception Box Set DVD-As, Talking Heads Brick Box Set DVD-As, Peter Gabriel UP SACD, David Bowie DVD-As, Janis Joplin/Cheap Thrills SACD, Moody Blues SACDs....
Nachosgrande 02-21-07, 02:58 PM Doors Perception is an awesome set, pick it up fast, it is going OOP.
Genesis 5.1 set is coming in March, European version will be SACD, check out the Genesis thread.

JoshParsons84 03-16-07, 03:12 PM What's a good place to buy SACD or DVD-A online? And what's the difference between the two?
Amazon has plenty for starters.
In brief, they both offer excellent sound quality (better than CD) in either stereo or multichannel (up to 5.1).
SACDs are an extension to CD, so can be played on normal CD players. That's their major plus point. Also, they're purely audio, so there's no messing around with menus you may not be interested in (or even able to see if you haven't turned your TV on).
DVD-Audios are an extension to DVD-Video, so can be played on normal DVD-Video players. They normally have on-screen menus and may feature lyrics and other info. They can also include video clips (although you can't have DVD-Audio quality on the video bits, only normal DD/DTS/stereo PCM). One advantage of DVD-Audio is that you can get surround without a special player (via DD/DTS), unlike SACD.
One problem with DVD-Audio is that players often don't offer easy navigation (group selection); you're forced to go via the on-screen menus, which means turning the TV on (or learning sequences of button presses).
There aren't many titles on both, so it's not like you get to choose, usually.
Rachael Bellomy 03-16-07, 09:50 PM I just got America's Struttin' Our Stuff SA-CD from Amazon U.K. It's a live set and sounds real nice in stereo. I don't do M/C at present but it has that. It appears to be a German release and it was recorded at the Ohme Filter, a famous venue. I have other live albums from there. They have video cameras at the Ohme....this stuff could turn up with video on down the line...?

To be precise only so called HYBRID SACD's can be played on a CD player and then only the CD layer is played and only in stereo so the quality is exactly the same as of CD. No quality improvement whatsover for the sake of compatibility. Similarly, DVD-A can be played on a DVD player but then only the DTS track is being played. Again, no quality improvement compared to CD (actually much lower lower than CD), although multichannel playback is possible.
GuildsmanCoren 03-21-07, 12:20 PM Well, Porcupine Tree's Stupid Dream isn't on your list. Awesome album, awesome mix (I consider it the best surround mix in my modest collection).
Also, Katatonia's The Great Cold Distance 5.1 special edition is pretty good, I'm listening to it for the first time right now. Still a great album, only with added awesomeness.
