"I'm pretty sure it says to not stick anything over 32""

They meant a big heavy 32" CRT. The RP LCD on it doesn't really fit, but it is light enough. :)

Hows this for wire management skills? Maybe not as great as Billken's, but I think it's a better job than most people's hear, and I mind you I am only 17.

Heres my most recent pics of my setup with my new AVR 247 and i also upgraded to an Elite.

And Although my wire management isnt exaclty noticeable, it took me about 5 hours to wire everything and everything is hidden away in the tiny rear areas on the stand and all my power adapters are hidden under the bottom shelf out of sight, and the wires behind my stuff is all wrapped and tied to be as clean as possible. It sure is a pain when i have to add or change any devices though lol :).

Yeah thats the only thing I fear if I spend to much time hiding wires. My room is so small I hate doin it cuz I get antsy and aggravated. Also I never really care about doin anything like that till I see how good someone's looked.

Well with the camera settings that you can adjust in the game you can definitely make your photos look real or artistic.

But I find that the game offers a really good framerate and the sound is quite good. Plus the new Road America track is an AWESOME track to race!

I used to be like that, and i still have to fight myself from doing it, but i found myself opening things and selling/trading before using it, and keeping it sealed keeps it worth more money so i just wait until im about to watch/play it. There are some exceptions though. :p

I spent countless hours playing that with my cousins and neighbors when I was younger. It was so much fun ... I loved the snow sled level where you get to race the penguin.

Anyways back on topic.

We just redid most of our setup - so wire management is still in progress. My picture taking capabilities, however, will likely remain subpar. We sit pretty close to our TV since we downsized to a 57", but not as close as this picture indicates.

Did you downsize to a 57" or from a 57"? That looks like a 52" or 46" Sammy lcd. What model BTW?

Yes, you read correctly, to a 57" - its the new Samsung (LN-T5781F) - we love it. We had the 70" Sony XBR RPTV (from 2003) but it was a bit too big for what we wanted to do with our new place. The furniture is fairly large scale so that is why the TV looks small.

Hopefully I won't get kicked off AVS for downsizing!

I'm kinda curious as to what people are outputting for their shots, 1080p scaled or the native 720p and letting the TV scale. Very nice shots from the DLPs and SXRDs especially, wow, definitely up there or better than my Panny 768p plasma. Maybe I missed it but are there any good Kuro shots in the thread?

Maybe for YOUR wife! ;)

ALL those speakers are too big I think to be considered wife friendly. At least my wife didn't like them, even though I love them. About the only wife friendly piece of equipment is the screen and projector because the screen doesn't take up much volume and if she accepts the screen she doesn't have a choice about the projector!

That's a damn good question, XMotoX! Perhaps someone can help you here or you could even start your own thread. I'd love to help you out, but I gave up on wire management long ago since I swap out/relocate components every 2-4 weeks or so.

darklordjames
01-11-08, 05:49 PM
Zip-ties are terrible for wire management. Changing stuff around becomes a hideous pain if need be. Then you will cut the zip-ties off, and never use them again. I have found twist-ties are pretty good for a cheap way to manage cables. Velcro-ties cost more, but are probably my favorite method of bundling cables. :)

XMotoX
01-11-08, 07:15 PM
I was considering starting a thread... but it would be off topic and prob get locked lol but theres really no place to start it on all of AVS... AVS needs an off topic section.

Anyhow, zip ties is all I got right now, but what else do they make? Do they make like real flexible piping? I'm imagining something like those straws that compress you know what i mean? Except clear and large enough to fit over the wires but the reason for the compression is so you can adjust the length of it.

You mean something like a "bendie" straw, I presume. Car audio install places would have that type of thing. I agree with darklordjames that velcro strapping is a good solution. That can likely be found at nearly any Home Depot, Lowes, etc.

If different lengths are an issue, its probably easiest to double-up the longest cord to match the shortest in measurement. Vertical stacking adds to the simplicity.

darklordjames
01-11-08, 11:53 PM
Speaking of cable length. A lot of cable management problems solve themselves if you get cables that are the appropriate length. Don't use a 6 foot cable when 2 feet will do! :) Another thing I have done that requires no materials is to braid a set of cables. The 3 video + 1 audio cable from my HD reciever to my AV reciever makes a nice 4 strand braid. The braiding also make the cable very formable. The natural friction of the cable jacketing will hold the braid in bent positions for routing purposes.

This also works pretty well for wire management:

http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=24434-1410-LP12XB/6&lpage=none

It doesn't look too bad, is very flexible, is self-sealing, is cheap as hell, and comes in a variety of diameters.

P.S. I saw a variant of BikerTrash's shelves at Target a little over a week ago (in black).

Hey if you actually go please get back on here and tell me what the name of that stuff is called! I would appreciate it.

Spyder, that stuff looks pretty good but kinda ugly lol. Not sure how it would work either. Looks like there is a slit and you just slide the wires in but I don't know how well it would hold.

You're correct, it is "kind of" ugly, but it's great for large cables like monoprice 24AWG or packing bunches of cables together behind something where it's not clearly visible. The slit in the side is a half-cut, meaning you can either stuff the cables through the tubing without making a full slit all the way through, or pull the slit apart up the side and then reseal it with the adhesive already present. The adhesive actually works fairly well.

Linkable mini velcro straps, as others have stated are the way to go. I like them alot because they come in different colors and and can be linked together to for longer lengths. I made all my wires disappear and it was very easy to remove them when I packed all my stuff up. Plus they work great when to bundle wires for use later. When I get my place here in Hawaii I will post pics.

Questions, questions! lol :p

Here is the spiral wrap I found at Home Depot (can't find it on thier site). The only bad part about the wrap is if I want to add something, I'd have to unspiral a bit, which takes some time.
http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL1600/815976/1747806/298120316.jpg

The shelves I got at http://www.acemart.com/ (http://www.acemart.com/kitchen-supplies/storage-shelving/wire-shelving/chrome-wire-shelving/c230-c828-c829-c830.html), and I did search for the best price. Not cheap, but VERY sturdy. Hardware stores usually have cheaper versions, but not usually the right size.

I have been thinking about making a cover for my shelves, basically 3 hinged sheets of 1/2 plywwod or MDF, covered in a black cloth. That would hide the wires!

None of you guys use cable ties and mounts? They're by far the best way to manage cable runs (and it's easier to add remove cables, since you just snip a tie and add a new one).

Ok 2 hours later and I'm done I think. A pretty good start anyhow. I still cant figure out what to do with wires that are longer than others. I just doubled them up if they were small enough to do that then slipped them inside the wire loom. Power is the only thing I dont know how to hide (like the power strip).

I prefer split wire loom myself: LINK (http://cableorganizer.com/wire-loom/colored.html)
You can get these T sections to break-out a wire any where in the loom for a really tidy look.

I output 1080p over component with my XBox.

There are better-looking console games out, like Uncharted and Heavenly Sword. Gears is still the prettiest on Xbox and up there with those two, of course.

Having never played these games at the time, I couldn't respond to this.

But I bought a PS3 yesterday, and I downloaded these 2 demos (it only took 9 hours ). I'll have to respectfully disagree. :) Those games do look very nice, but I still think that Gears looks better. But hey, everyone is entitled to their opinions.

I noticed you have a couple of windows bracketing the projector in your room.

How do you switch the color of the LED's from red to blue?

They are multi-color. There are 7 different colors. I can leave them on 1 color or have them constantly fade to difference colors. There is a button that you can press or press/hold to choose the different settings.

No offense, but that is one ugly av rack. Was it originally design to hold garage tools/pot plants? Even with the cable tied, it looks really bad going down like that. Maybe tie the cord to the leg of the stand to hide it. Even reducing the component such as xbox and ps2 (when you have a xbox360 and ps3) would make it look much nicer and less clutter.

You've been somewhat misinformed. Grandpa's slide projector from 1960 was very difficult to see in rooms with windows. Ma and Pa's units weren't that great back in 1984 either. Today's (true home theatre) units are much, much, much better, and some ambient light isn't the complete image killer that non-projector owners might think it is. That said, it absolutely pays to have a dedicated room, if possible. Besides, who wants to play games/watch movies on the surface of the sun anyway? Bat caves rock!

I totally agree with you. 350 DVDs at $20 a pop....that's $7k. From what I see....$7 could easily buy all of the gear in uptown's system:

Pio Plasma $2800 from a reputable dealer (much less if you want to gamble)

I totally agree with you. 350 DVDs at $20 a pop....that's $7k. From what I see....$7 could easily buy all of the gear in uptown's system:

Pio Plasma $2800 from a reputable dealer (much less if you want to gamble)
PS3 60gb - $500
XBox 360 Elite - $450
HD-DVD Add-on - $150
Onkyo 705 - $800 (Even less on sale at Crutchfield)

cables/wires - who knows I guess between $300 -600, since some are Monster cables/wires

I work for an elite dealer here in illinois. The sad thing is trade in value on an older panel is not too good. I could only give you like $1000 trade in, if you were my customer.

Because you own $600 worth of cables?

The consensus is you don't get any benefit buying the most expensive cables you can find.

darklordjames
01-15-08, 11:02 PM
Looking behind my setup I can see $600 worth of cables pretty quickly. A bunch of cables are back there at $10-15 a piece, plus 100ft of good 12ga speaker wire at $0.50 a foot, plus banana plugs, plus the inflated $25-30 price of console AV cables... It adds up pretty quick. :) I have nothing Monster or anything I really over spent on, but I also didn't bother to find the cheapest things I possibly could.

When monoprice is an AVS forum sponsor, $600 in cables is insane.

Someone paying for the word "Monster" to be printed on the outside of a cable is...

Well, it's the equivalent of paying for the word "Bose" on a paper-cone speaker. :(

darklordjames

"$600 in cables is insane"

I count 15 items in my setup. $40 a piece to hook up each item seems reasonable to me. Sure if I went through and recabled everything right now with Monoprice stuff, it would cost less (maybe $300), but that isn't how it ws put together. Really, it was $20 here for some component cables, $15 there for a Toslink cable. I have wasted far more money on the devices that I have swapped in and out in this setup than on the cables to hook them up with.

Thanks for the replys guys, I'm glad that you all pretty much like it. I wasn't expecting so much questions but I'll try to answer a couple of them. I'm living in a medium size unit, small house, so I can crank my sound up a little bit. It is a 7.1 set up, its not as spread out as I would of liked but I have tried my best, playing with the settings, levels, distance, to get the most out of it. They are NS series: 777, 333 and c444. I had rx-v2600 before and sound was very good with them but with 3800 and HD audio they sound amazing. I try not to think about upgrading them, for now that is. TV is 46" Sony X3100, thats equal to XBR4 in states. Its the best choice for my needs - gaming, HTPC and movies. AV unit is Gecko, made here in australia, and as someone has said earlier it is perfect in keeping the airflow around. For those who are interested heres the link to its website:

$600 is not a lot in cables at all. Granted, most people won't benefit much using higher quality cables. I am a proponent of buying higher end cables, but I don't recommend it for people that could use some other upgrading first.

I probably have spent between $1500 and $2000 in after market power cords alone. At least $1000 in speaker cable, and at least another $2000+ for interconnects. I've had many people call me stupid for spending so much money on cables...but considering my system....it's only about 10-15% of the entire set-up budget. To each his own....

FYI - I would never buy Monster Cable. Most of my cables are AudioQuest and PS Audio.

Yes, 100% right, and look just yesterday I went to the Monoprice website to get a new 20' 22AWG HDMI cable for AVR to plasma on wall and guess what, there out of stock, so now my choices are wait 3 weeks or more/less or just go to Bestbuy tonight and pick one up for $100 or more since i need 20' at least. thank god im not in desperate need the cable so i can wait. But other people cant wait and need it now so they got to pay more. So for example, if i just purchased the HD DVD box set of The Matrix, I am going to want to watch that bad boy tonight, im not going to wait 3 to 4 weeks for a HDMI cable so i would just pick one up at the local BB. :D

why is the Elite better?

The elite gives you color decoding, and grayscale adjustments that the non elite doesnt. I had both the non elite and the elite calibrated by one of the best calibraters in the country "UMR", and there is a huge difference in color accuracy. To explain, the non elite even after calibration is still pretty off in red and green. Red is oversaturated and green is oversaturated and tinted blue. A green test pattern looks more like ivy green then a natural green. This will effect the color of grass and other things that are green in real life. The oversaturation of red will make flesh tones too rosy, and unatural. The elite calibrated is able to hit near perfect HD REC 709 color. This accuracy in color will knock your socks off when you watch anything HD. Flesh tones will look real, revealing every little difference in tone and shade between people. Grass, tree's, and shrubbery " probally misspelled" will look like they do in real life. Finally, one big thing a calibration will do for you is eliminate noise. When you have a set that is tracking D65, you will see less noise because there is no grayscale shifts between different IRE's. My 1150 is razor sharp because of this and I have the sharpness completely off. Sorry kinda winded but you asked.

"Takes a big gulp of air for this one"
Noise in grayscale tracking is what I'm talking about. Let me explain it this way. When you have a tv that is not tracking D65 color temp, you have shifts either green, red, or blue, as you step up from 0 IRE to 100 IRE. In lamens terms black to white. if you want to see what I'm talking about just set yiour tv to low or high color temp and you will notice, the overall image shifts blue on high, or red on low. This should not be the case. Also if you watch a movie that has alot of black, and you see sometimes in different shades, little blocks of noise that are not the same color of black as the other parts this is considered grayscale tracking noise. What you dont realize is what we percieve as just noise in the dark area is actually slight color shifts in the tv's grayscale tracking. Our eyes are not very sensitive to contrast changes at very low IRES or shades of black, but we are very sensitive to color shifts in the low IRES. This is what I'm talking about when I say noise. A pioneer plasma that is tracking D65 correctly should be able to have its sharpness control completely turned off and still be razor sharp. A image that is too soft sometimes is a combination of processing, " which the pioneers do beautifully" or grayscale tracking. A well calibrated elite has a razor sharp image, with the sharpness off, and zero noise even in the very dark areas. Finally a calibrated elite makes white look white and black look black. There will be no color shift. It should also be pointed out that a calibrated elite will have much better gamma, Meaning very smooth transitions from black to white. "And Exhale!"

Yo guys without starting a flame war I would like to ask EVERYONE's opinion on BOSE home theater systems.

NO, I am not looking into buying one nor am I looking into to buying any HT system prolly ever. I just am enjoying my new HDTV and my uncle bought a BOSE HT system and he is going to let me use his for abit while he is down here.

In a thread I made I got some responses, but it seems people really hate BOSE and I cannot get it through their head that I am not paying for one...nor is anybody...I am only using one for my HDTV.

So lets pretend all is free.

Your opinions please. Also to ensure that I have not completely wasted your time I will post some pics that were posted by a friend of mine over at teamxbox who now has the EXACT same HDTV as me and uses the same settings.
