As you can see, a hell of a lot cleaner! :) I retired the living room Dreamcast, only having the bedroom one still hooked up. I got rid of my HD OTA tuner and my PVR as well. I figure if I care about broadcast TV again, I'll get an HD card for my Vista Premium PC and stream through the 360. Getting rid of stuff I was able to remove the switchbox that was needed for the consoles, as I can hook everything up through the reciever now. Removed the PC as all of my video streaming is done through my Xbox with XBMC. The PS2 is still around, it is just hiding behind the plasma. As I have all of my games loaded up on a harddrive inside it, and use a nice Logitech wireless controller, I don't actually need access to it anymore. :)

Along with removing the equipment rack, I brought the plasma forward on it's stand, but pushed the stand further back against the wall. The amount of space I reclaimed is great! Plus no more manual switchboxing for the consoles!

Good point but the thing is, if all I want to see screenshots of games there are many websites I can go to.

When I am looking at peoples shot's in this thread, I am more looking at how they have their equipment arranged, what stand their using and what the rest of the room looks like. If I see something I like I might incorporate it when I finally buy a new house.

I just got the Ideal-Lume Standard about 3 weeks ago and it's amazing. Best investment you can make for your setup in my opinion. It truly does all they say it does. My wife even loves it.

I was thinking of adding one of the newer 6500K CFLs that you can finally find in retail to the back of my setup. I figured I would put it in a clamping desk lamp, or the like. I have a pair of the 6500K CFLs in the room adjacent to my living room, and I am still amazed by the quality of light that they put out. Huge improvement over the yellow-ish CFLs that I put in throughout the house last year!

I don't understand why people post in this thread complaining about screenshots. That's what this thread is about - "....screenshots and tv u r using" and most posters do say what size and type their displays are.

I can see your point on viewing real world shots versus computer captured shots. It does give you a better idea of what the game will look like at home. But a lot of pics aren't 360 screen shots but movie shots from HD channels and such.

I could have watched the superbowl in HD and was complaining about getting comcast or direct tv when according to just about everyone...OTA HD is the best signal you can get. Atleast many feel that way. Btwdoes anyone know all the standard OTA HD channels? Like how many?

go to radioshack.. buy the antenna, plug it into the coax onto the back of the TV.. use TV menu to scan for OTA channels.. should be all set

It may be a byproduct of the camera, but the contrast looks a bit high on those shots to me.

mrTAPOUT is the second person who started with the 4671 and ended up with the 5080 who has been well known on these forums, the first was sharpjunkie who compared the 4671, 46xbr4 and the 4681 and found out that the 4671 was the best for gaming, he then decided to test the plasma waters and got a 4234 samsung plasma and found that it beat the 4671 in every category, so he went all out and got the 5080 kuro. This is becoming a common theme among LCD owners. (He is in love with it as well, and it cost less than the Sammy to boot.)

I'm just waiting for the green fringing to be fixed before I get another plasma (the 5080 comes close to getting rid of it but not all of it, hopefully they fix it by the time the ultra slim Kuro comes out. :D)

My final review of the 71F vs the Kuro 5080HD.

I finally was able to do some real testing between the Kuro and 71F, next to one another, in a dark room and bright room from 8-9feet. The picture quality was close, I mean, nearly identical in bright conditions and the black levels of the 71F matched the Kuro in bright conditions. The 71F truly is a beast of an LCD in the bright. From 8 feet, 1080p did not make a difference, I mean not even a hair in my or my fiances eyes. When I sat within 3 feet, the LCD looked cleaner, especially since the pixels on LCDs are much smaller, but also suprisingly, I could see more fine details on the Kuro. Colors were close, but on the plasma color was a bit deeper, but not by a lot. Shadow detail was even.

At night it was a different story. I put transformers on, with a bright colorful scene and picture quality was nearly identical. I then put on gears of war, and put it on level 3 in caves. A couple things. I viewed it on the 71F first, and I thought well the black levels look pretty good. I then tried the kuro and thats where the huge advantage was. The Kuro at night looked much more deep, bold, and actually sharper. the LCD looked flat in comparison. another thing I noticed that I didnt before, was the blacks on the 71F had a slight blue tint whereas the Kuro had a pure black look.

I then compared Crank on bluray on a scene with a close up of Jason statham in the pool. In the past ive taken shots on the XBR4 and 71F, and now the Kuro. to my suprise again, I couldnt notice anything less sharp on the Kuro, it looked every bit as resolved and detailed as the 1080p xbr4 and 71f. I thought with 768p, fine wrinkles wouldnt be as visible as on the 1080p LCDS, but this was not the case, not as all. the Kuro looked very sharp and detailed. BTW Im running the Kuro on 1080p upscaled.

When I told my friend Im going to exchange the 71F for the Kuro he thought I was crazy for exchanging a top of the line 1080p lCD with 120hz for a 768p plasma. In my experience, they are very close in performance, especially during the day where its about even minus the colors and slightly more defined look of the Kuro, but even then, you have to seriously sit there and analyze the picture with a magnifying glass to notice.

Comparing the smooth modes of both tvs was an easy decision. The lcds 120hz proccessing with de-judder blows away the smooth mode of the pioneer. smooth mode works almost as good as LOW AMP setting. On the flip side, games were more responsive on the plasma. I didnt notice any delay witht he LCD before, but now that Ive tried on both, the plasma is more reponsive, and even more when AMP is engaged on anything more than LOW.

So in the end, in bright conditions the difference is so small, only videophiles would notice. At night, its still close, unless you are watching a dark scene, and in that regard its not even close. Ive also noticed 1080p was only a real benefit when I sat within 4 feet (which I would never). Also, despite my previous thought, the PLasma pops just as much as the LCD, and even more than it at night with dark scenes. Screen unifority seemed even, but viewing angles were better on the plasma, since blacks did not fade from the side on the plasma. Also, the plasma picture quality seemed a bit more natural looking, which I prefer.

Oh and did I mention how impressed I am with the TV speaker of the Kuro. Its really sounds amazing for a TV speaker. Looks better with it on unless you mounted your set.

Honestly, I would like to keep both since I really like the AMP feature of the LCD, but since I cant, I will return the LCD finally in a couple of days. I will check out the 6series LCD to see what improvement have been made. Ideally I would like some variety in the house, and have one tv that can do de-judder and 120hz processing like the LCDs do. I dont know though, I have def. become a believer in pioneer.

By the way, this is not intended to downplay LCDs or put the Kuro on a pedestal. I know a lot of people view this thread before purchasing a TV, and I thought I'd share my experience. Both are def worth owning, but in the end, unless you are really into the AMP feature, the Kuro wins hands down in every category nearly by a hair (with the exeption of black levels in a pitch black room). Also, I can confirm that despite my previous thoughts, 1080p on a 50" set from 8-9 feet away is not a benefit for the most part, and there are alot of other factors that decide how detailed a picture is. I used to think resolution was the only factor why all the fine details stuck out. And also in my experience, the LCD does not pop more because its brighter. The plasma can pop out just as much, and in some cases more.

I shouldnt have even posted the GOW one, because I took that before I changed my camera settings. In that picture it has a purplish tint and high exposure, the COD4 ones are much more close to what I see.

One of these sets properly calibrated and being fed either HDM, high-def games or even quality upscaled DVD, is a sight to behold.

I recommend the new Pioneers to every potential client in the market for a flat screen. You really can't go wrong with them.

Be sure to tell Westa over on the LCD boards how you feel about the 71 vs the Kuro, he seems to be the biggest LCD fanboy I have ever met. He is so sure that the 71 is a lot better than the kuro's (black levels) that it isn't even funny anymore. :D

That and add the fact that each of us are viewing these shots on different Monitors each with its own contrast/video settings as well. Something that hit home when I showed a friend of mine some shots I was impressed with only for them to look washed out on his laptop.

Yeah, I love my 6010 Kuro. Thing is freaking amazing. Gaming at night brings it to a whole new level, I am continually amazed at how good the picture is. It still makes your mouth drop open at times.

I spent an assload of time calibrating it to settings I like over the past few days.... the benefit REALLY shows in movies:)

Viper98, you still using a Sammy HLS-5087? If so, could you post your calibration numbers? I keep seeing your pics and compared to my set, they are stunning.

Don't be too sure, my Panasonic Plasma settings are nothing like the average settings that you find on here, the settings listed on avsforum give my set a really bad green tint, so I calibrated it myself and got much better results.

see, thats what I'm talking about, i have a Sony 52w3000 (lcd 1080p) my level is somewhere around 70-75 for games (360 through VGA), 55-60 for movies (hd dvd), and about 65 for tv. under a certain level i'm expecting to get a blurred image (too much smoothing). maybe tv manufacturers should have a specific input for displaying only what is received? :confused:

Yes, its the camera exposure. in person, the main character is not have white crush on his outfit. I have my contrast on 30 on the 5080 and brightness on +1 with DRE on low.

its true, my camera struggles to take plasma shots, the screen flashes and colors change before I take every shot. It sucks. The camera loved my LCD.

I realize that 0 is not always off. Maybe I was silly for assuming that Viper knew what he was doing with turning off sharpness, and therefore assuming 0 is off on his display, as it is on mine.

You must use test patterns to find the "off" point for sharpness on each model tv.

Some Tv have "off" point for 0 some at 20, some below what it can actually do (-10 on a 0-100 scale). Only way to tell is fire up a THX optimizer or a Digital video essential disk and test.

Samsung TV's "off" point is usually below 10-15.

Pics look great and natural and dont forget that games put in all kinds of lighting effects that have an impact on contrast on purpose.

I use 0 for sharpness because that's what cnet said to use in their settings for the tv

The whites are crushed in the picture, but not in real life. That pretty much makes Spyder's comment right on the money, and your comment "off base". Way to go!

Knowing what is the highest quality and settling for what one can afford are two different things. I know what the quality and performance of exotic cars and how much better they are than mine, but I don't own one. Leave the guy alone. A year off is my present to myself for turning 30 :) Yeah, I find a year of free time to be far more valuable than having the "bestest display evar!!!11one".

Hey there. You are experiencing the wonder world of "moire". Its an artifact generated by your digital camera sensor. Some cameras are more prone to this and it generally shows up when taking pictures of small repeating patterns (like the many pixels on your tv).

Then you have to put your camera in a tripod, your camera needs to be still to take a really good picture. Then you take a lot of picture with different settings and check which works best.
After several tries you should get a really good shot.

Wow, Viper! How does Timeshift look in motion? I purchased it for a cheap previously-played deal, but traded it at EB for a "profit" (I made 5 bucks in credit!:D) The bump mapping looks amazing! I don't even think I tried it, only because I was busy with H3, COD4, and Bioshock at the time. My undiagnosed ADHD would have gotten the best of me...

I just have a point and shoot Cannon Powershot 560...pretty much just leave it on the auto setting when taking pictures outside, on-vacation and such.

But when I try to take shots of my TV inside...with low lighting...I cannot seem to get it right. Ive turned off the flash...but still not sure what to put the other settings at. One thing is for sure..Auto does not work for taking pictures of a TV scene...so I need to use one of the manual settings.

i've heard its closer to 90+ hours. except that most game reviewers blow through the main quest, forget all the side quests, and skip all the cinemas (when possible).

Yes I really play there, my wife even joins in for Wii gaming. Yes I'm married, though I'm the one responsible for the decor and cleanness (excluding my pooch's bed in front of the fireplace).

As for my picture taking it was a spur of the moment, 'Hey the camera is sitting there from taking photo's of my daughter playing. I put LO on pause but then you get a pause screen. And the lighting in that room sucks unless I open the shades which are behind the couch and cause a nasty glare on the TV. I did take several photo's with my SLR using different settings, those were unfortunately the best considering the conditions and my laziness.

Switch42 - Try lowering the resolution of the camera before you take the shot. You only really need 0.5 megapixels for display here, so try taking your pics at 2MP or less. It'll probably hide that moire real quick!

You get the same kind of pattern when scanning magazine print at too high a resolution, as the scanner starts picking up the dots that make up the image, instead of the image. At 300dpi, horrible lines. At 150dpi, gone!

No matter what flatscreen you are buying, it's going to end up being somewhat of an investment, so do yourself a HUGE favor and either save your money until you can get something with a good name and warranty behind it or lower your sights a little.

Off brands like Akai take advantage of people who watch MTV cribs etc and think they need to bling out their systems with flat screens they can't afford. It's underperforming, unreliable, under-warrantied *JUNK*. You might think your getting a good deal, "YAY I got a flatscreen for a grand!!" but the truth is your geting exactly what you paid for or probably less. It's for posers. And even a grand is a good chunk of change to most people.

If you're pushing your cart around Costco and the only display in your price range says AKAI on the bottom, then simply tell yourself you can't afford a plasma right now, no matter how "acceptable" you think it looks.

I agree to some extent, but minus the anger and trolling.

My advice to someone who asks "I need a flat-screen LCD TV. 40 inches isn't quite big enough. 42"+ please. I'm looking to spend $1000. Which one should I buy?" would be: Whatever you do, don't by a crappy brand. You're better off...
a) ...digging a little deeper in your pockets and spend a few extra hundred more. You could easily get something worthwhile for $1500. You won't regret it.
b) ...buying a smaller TV. You should consider a 37", which is more reasonable for your budget. You're better off with a smaller quality flat-screen than a big Prima or Akai.
c) ...keeping your tube TV and waiting for prices to go down or your budget to go up. If you're gonna spend on your home-theatre, do it right or not at all.

Of course, everyone is entitled to spend their hard-earned money however they please. I'm just saying that $1000+ should never be spent on a poor quality product. Just like I would recommend a 2004 Honda over Toyota to a 2008 Kia. What Max said wasn't about elitism or making fun of poor people. It's about spending money wisely. There is a sliver of truth behind those spiteful, mean-hearted words. :)

naruto looks pretty sweet, game any good? i was under the impression that it was just a fighting game.

it's pretty fun..... there's a part of the game that is just fighting... and theres the story mode which is basically an adventure game with fighting

as much as i absolutely HATE wallpaper and wood colored moldings, i must admit that i think this room looks great, keep up the good work...

Thanks. I hate wallpaper too, the walls in this room are done with Venetian Plaster not wallpaper. Each wall took me about 8 hours to do.

I picked up Assassin's Creed over the weekend. What a great game this is. Throwing yourself off of rooftops and slaughtering 20 guards at a time has never been so much fun or looked so good.

Since then I have made some major updates, the largest being I sold my 46" DLP and upgraded to the Panny AX200U Projector. I'm using it with a 96" Carada Criterion Brilliant White screen.
In addition to the projector, I've added a PS3, Wii, Toshiba HD-A3, and a Rega P1 turntable. I still have a lot of wire management to do (as you can see in the picture below), but at least everything is up and running and looking great.

I just made my first effort at taking some screen shots of the projector in action. This did not go as well as I had planned. In the pictures, the contrast appears WAY too high and you lose all of the beautiful shadow detail that I assure you is present with the projector. Here are a couple pictures I took of Assassin's Creed to show off the problem I'm having getting good screenshots. Anyone have any good suggested camera settings that might improve my results?

I think they look great tbh. You may have the projector on a "cooler" setting than me, but chances are it's the camera etc.

In general I guess you want to use a low light or slow shutter speed, I like to use a two second timer and set the camera down on something or use a tripod.

Oh, and take out the HUD when you can.

How sweet is that game though? Nice break from COD 4.

Just got a cam a few days ago. Now I can start showing my Sony KDS-60A3000. I'll have some more pics up later. I'll try to get some night shots.

No kidding, it's still one of the most impressive looking racing games I seen (more so then even it's 2 successors)

I know, I couldn't get any shadow detail to pick up at all in the shots I took. That CoD4 shot was the only one that was half decent out of the 20 that I took. I stuck with the animation shots because of that.

So what does the rest of your system look like, Pendragoon? That is the interesting part of this thread. :)

No worries about your cam. You're certainly not the first (and won't be the last) to post L.O. with such overblown contrast, blooming colors, and crushed whites.

If you want calibration numbers, AVS is a good place to be. Photobucket works well for pics.

I heard that putting the power brick behind the 360 is a fast way of RROD your xbox. Once I moved and put my power brick in that same spot but like 4 inches away my xbox RROD like 3 months later. Just letting you know so your not stuck like I was without an xbox for a month.

it's pretty good.... I'm sure I'd love it if I was a fan of the show but I've never watched it

That's why I've been holding off....awesome show, and even though the game was penned by the show writers, it's still....well...a game based off a show.

However, it's also an adventure game...a genre I've been missing. I think I'll wait for some reviews, but I'm a Lost junkie, so I'll be getting this anyways...whether it's at $59.99 now or $39.99 sometime in the future is the question.

Why? It increases the appearance of contrast on the screen.
