Look, if having a backlight suits you, great. To each their own. Personally, I enjoy the "floating screen" look, where the film/game is the absolute center of attention, not the distraction of mood lighting emanating from behind the set. I guess that's the projector enthusiast in me talking though.

I suppose I should run down to the hardware store and put 4 of these behind my screen to get a killer picture:

If that doesn't work, I'll simply mount my screen over my bay windows on the south side of the house, right where the most daylight pours in. I'm really looking forward to that 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio!

Bias lighting makes it EASIER for the screen to be the center of attention but ok. If 3,000,000 candle power is your idea of ideal bias lighting then I'd guess you haven't seen a properly setup light. http://www.cinemaquestinc.com/ideal_lume.htm is your friend.

Maybe re-calibrate it. I calibrated my TV when there was a lot of sunlight, so the picture should be bright.

everytime I use it the Kuro amazes me. It truly is a beast of a tv. And honestly, I dont miss 1080p because its actually more bold and as sharp as my older samsung 1080p 71F I had.

Zero ghosting.
Incredibly vibrant and accurate colors.
Real, REAL black.

I walked into a Fry's the other day to pickup some PC parts and swung by the home theater department...now, granted it IS Fry's...but everything I saw looked like a distant distant 2nd to what was sitting home. The Sony Bravia LCD that I ALMOST bought instead was on display in one of their showrooms and I just shook my head at what I now know are muted shadows are shallow blacks (in comparison).

I'm convinced there's nothing better on the market.

Maybe you can borrow a friends camera, snap some shots and show us, im looking to ISF calibrate my Pio 5070, but not sure if i will even notice a difference. Also, after looking at MaxLomax pic of COD4 i realize i need to lower my contrast and maybe something else on this game b/c i like how his is set while he was playing the Crash map, mine is bright.

Thanks! It's definitely used more for music than HT/Gaming. Music is where my soul lies, but I fire up the 360 (when it doesn't RROD on me, i'm on my 5th one now) and PS3 on the good ol' Kuro as well several times a week.

mtommy, that's the 5010FD right? I have the same display, yet can't take a decent screenshot whatsoever. How are you guys taking such decent screenshots, are you guys all using DSLR's? I have a decent point and click camera. Canon SD700 IS, yet almost every pic I take looks like an epileptic was taking the pictures.

I use a digital SLR (Nikon D80) on a tripod.

That Splinter Cell looks better than some current gen games.

Anyone else notice that many games have a distinct "look or feel" to the backgrounds? What I mean is, they employ a lot of beautiful, but monochromatic tones. Assissin's Creed and Devil May Cry 4 are two of the most recent, but there have been many others as well.

Naughty Dog had this specifically in mind when they created Uncharted and they comment on it in the special features. They even included an unlockable "feature" called "next-gen filter" or something that dumbs down all the colors! :)

Actually, some of their models do. My 52" Bravia XBR2 LCD definitely supports 1080p over component; it's even mentioned in the manual. Don't know if the capability has been removed from newer models.

The KDS-60A3000 does it just fine. In fact, it will accept 1080p over any of its high definition inputs. Component, VGA, or HDMI.

He is refering to the older 06 models, most of them didn't support it. (because they didn't want the 360 to play in 1080p on their units) The newer units all support it though.

Yes! The switch is on the block of plastic that connects to the 360 directly. If you have it set to SD, you will not get HDTV out of the thing.

If i would have a SLR im pretty sure i would not have any problems, but with a Point&Shot camera is pretty difficult, especially when there is no option to adjust anything on the camera. ;)

Anyway, that's what i got for now, i did try different settings, but all came out dark. Seems like i can't help, but it crushes blacks and nothing i can do. Tried WB set to Cloudy,Daylight,Auto but all the same. If i increase EV the contrast gets too high and there is no option to adjust that.

I went from a 150 buck kodak point and click, to a Canon EOS Rebel XTi and the one thing I have noticed is more difficult is good pics of the TV on. LOL

I think it's pretty cool. It looks good and a mission are decent too. The AI is ok, they don't do much other than shooting at you. Your AI partner is decent also, sometimes running/shooting around without any reason, but since you can give orders he works with you pretty good.
I would say it's a solid 8 out of 10.

I rearranged my room so my couch is only about 6-7' from my tv...... too close for my lens which focal range starts at 50mm:D

You could put the power bricks behind the opposite 360s. So that the 360 that is on has the off's power brick behind it. Hot air blowing on a brick that is off is fine, the issue would be hot air blowing on a brick that is already working hard to keep itself cool.

Or you could put the bricks on the shelf below, behind your Buffy seasons.

Simply put - AWESOME!

Slightly off topic -

Pioneer has already ceased production of this model and there's a very limited amount left nationwide. BB had a great price on these a while back but with a limited supply and demand still high, they won't budge from the MSRP. I wish you good luck trying to get one from them at a lower price.

While trying to get a better deal I discovered Tweeter is having a blowout sale on the Pioneer Elite PRO-1150 for a good bit less than BB's current price on the 5080. The 1150 is the step-up model to the 5080, same resolution with more inputs, features and calibration options.

You may be able to find a better price for the 5080 buying from an online vendor but if you're like me and prefer to buy a plasma locally for ease of return if there's a problem and have a Tweeter store nearby, you might want to check out their deal on the 1150. Picked one up on Sunday and it's definitely sweet.

Actually, I believe the 1150 is a 1080p model. It looks amazing (so does the 5080). Tweeter does have a great deal on the 1150 right now and if you were thinking of getting the 5080 I would suggest checking out this deal. Let just say that you can get the Elite-PRO 1150FD Kuro for the price of the 5080HD Kuro.

F'ing genius man! I can't believe I didn't think of that! I'm going to swap the cables this weekend so that they are on opposite sides. That's honestly one of the most useful suggestions I've gotten from somebody on this forum. Extremely simple, but effective and so simple that for some reason it didn't even occur to me!

nyc, chinatown... plenty of places to buy games before the release date.... plenty of other stores, including chains and mom and pop shops break street dates all the time.

viper said nothing about piracy, so don't drag him into something like this.

I just read through several pages and many people were discussing modded 360's , seeing as how there is no home-brew available for the 360 as of yet (would be great if there was) so why else would you mod one ... any guesses .

Bottom line here is these discussions should not be taking place on AVS . I have seen the mods come down on this stuff many times and if people keep thinking they are free to discuss it and make light of it here then it could get out of control .

There is no reason to mention modded 360's and/or pirated games in this thread regardless of what your personal feelings are on the issue . If people are bold and decide to post images of unreleased games to garner some sort of envy or recognition for being a pirate then honestly they do not belong at AVS .

So please let's just stop the piracy related discussion and allow the thread to continue ;)

it's nothing like virtua tennis

this game is entirely unique...... but in a good way. It's very simplified..... yes even more so than virtua tennis is.... and if nintendo has taught us anything it's that simple = fun

game's a blast. especially the power up shots.... though I don't see it having much staying value and will prolly get tired rather quickly so I'm assuming somewhere in the 7.0 range for scores

So, the release is actually for Tuesday then? It's an odd thing, since 99% of games come out on a Friday, but that's good news for me, since that means it will come with BB's normal DVD shipment. (The BB manager puts a copy of all new games/movies behind the counter for me on day of release the moment the shipment comes in. :))

Most games ship on Tuesday, but don't get to stores until Friday, this made me mad when CoD4 came out and it didn't arrive on Tuesday. (and everyone on the gaming forums talking about how great it is didn't help either.:mad:)

here's to hoping someone snags one of the new panny px80's and puts some pics up. either that or I'll do it when I get one in the next month or so. the itch is getting bad....

I actually liked the game, but then again, it was a rental for me. If I had spent $60 on it I would have probably been mad as well. (kinda short)

I don't know...The game seemed odd to me. If he was possessed by a demon then why would he need guns? He should have had more demon powers. The gameplay and the graphic were great. I just couldn't get into it. (shrug)

Please excuse the mess. :) I'm still cleaning up after the transfer to the new stand.

The stand comes with glass shelves and pegs with plastic holders that hold up the shelves. The center spot is not drilled for these shelves. There are supposed to be drawers there. I needed the extra shelf, though. So I drilled through the existing holes on the opposite side of the board to create 4 new shelf holding holes in the center spot. The shelf fit perfectly, and my center channel fits perfectly there.

The new stand is 19" tall with 8 1/2" tall plastic feet hammered into the bottom of the base. It comes with metal legs, 2 drawers, and sliding glass doors, none of which I used.

Anyway, it was perfect for what I needed with a little modification. I think it looks awesome, personally. :)

On the left is the DirecTV HR20 and the XBox. Center is the Athena Point 5 center channel on top of the Vaio 200 disc firewire DVD changer (hooked up to my media center PC on the right). On the right is my Sony receiver, which is long due for an upgrade. Under that is the PS3 80Gig. The TV is a Sony KDS-60A3000 60" SXRD RPTV.

Amazing pics Tapout! Your plasma puts your old samsung Lcd to shame. Way better color as well as that 3d look you get because of black gradation. Plus you cant beat that smooth motion onscreen with no image lag.

thanks guys. Yeah, I agree, the colors are what sold me on the plasma, I already knew the blacks were going to be much better, but the colors are so much more deep and rich on the 5080.
