Your Sharpness control is set too high (see the edge enhancement around the lettering on the COD4 menu) . Sharpness set too high like that will actually make the image look worse because the jaggies become more pronounced . I am as guilty as anyone for being a Sharpness freak but I can't stand EE ;) .

I made the mistake of zooming in too much, and thanks DagamePimp, I actually have someone from lionav coming out to calibrate my set on Thursday, so I'm pretty stoked about that. He's (Greg Loewen) gonna go the extra mile and tweak my surround as well.

For the mean time, where do you think I should have the sharpness for now? I have a Samsung LN-T 5271.

I'll bring down the sharpness and not zoom in so much, and take a couple more pics to see how they turn out.

Hey Tapout, is your pio calibrated? I am truly impressed with the black levels. Your GTA photos have to be the best I've seen so far. I have an XBR5 in my bedroom and I hate it, I should've bought another 71 series (h]), but now that I see your Pio, I'm taking it into consideration. I just don't like the aesthetics of the set.

Its not officially calibrated, though its very, very close to D65K. Ive even gone in the service menu and made RGB adjustments. Ive owned an xbr4, 71F, and now the Kuro and the Kuro wins hands down, no contest, especially in a dim room. the colors and blacks are just superior. I used to be pro LCD and although I dont dislike LCD, plasma has won my heart over. LCD is still great also.

I konw what you're sayin tapout.... I never thought I'd buy a plasma... I was huge on DLP tvs.... but with Darkchip 4 sets seeming to be never coming out and the fact that I can't help but notice SSE now I decided to take the plunge and buy a plasma after looking at the px80, 5080hd, and a450 I decided I'd sacrifice black levels for color accuracy(and a whole hell of a lot less money).... and I have no regrets......... especially now that I calibrated the tv(using slightly tweaked cnet settings)

though if I can sell my DLP I'm prolly gonna return this and get a 9g kuro next month

though I did just adjust my settings today(I was using low contrast/low brightness to break it in first) so we'll see what happens now

Immediately after seeing the pictures of your apartment, I tossed out the PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii boxes that I had been saving for no apparent reason (they were neatly stacked on a shelf in my closet though, and not on top of a heaping mound of garbage). I can only imagine the mold that is probably growing in those walls, and the roaches that are probably festering behind them....Gahhhhhhh what horrors lie within the confines of that refuse mountain. After seeing those pictures, I need to take a shower.

Thanks for the kind words. I wanted to share the setting I use to watch/play my XBox 360 (and PS3 on another thread) and be honest about it rather than try to dress it up for the camera. These 'show pics of your setup' threads are my favorites at AVS and just wanted to participate. Read the rules, didn't see any requirements for cleanliness so I snapped away. Funny thing is nobody has mentioned whether they liked my Xbox 360 pics or not! :(

Ok I'll comment on your 360 pics. They are terrible. They are like 160 degree angled shots of overly bright/washed out screens. :cool:

dad1153 gets points from for the Country Time Lemonade and Oreo's in the 3rd shot. also the Panasonic 3D0 in the 5th shot. the sienfeld collections in the 5th shot. the SNES and Dreamcast also in the 5th shot. that stack of N64 games in the 5th shot. and the canada dry bottle in the 1st shot.
the bad thing is that the overall appearance of the room totally drowns out the rooms functionality and viability as a multi-media viewing and enjoyment center.

Man I forgot about the Nomad, I wanted one of those things in the worst way. Virtual Boy, Saturn, brings back memories :)

i LOVED my nomad, but it was expensive to run! 6AA's would burn up in 4 or 5 hours!

Anyone else still trying to dial in the settings for GTAIV? No matter what I do, it still looks a little washed out to me. Some of the screenshots of GTAIV here make me wonder what I'm doing wrong =P, but then again, maybe it's just that the game only looks good during the Sunrise and Sunset. Oh well, it's not like it matters anymore, since I finished the game. Keep the shots coming ;)

I actually just posted a nice explanation about that over in the GTA settings thread. CONTRAST 7, everything else 5/default.

Thanks, I somehow missed that thread. Putting contrast at 7, and everything else to default, is indeed better than what I was using. It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who realized that there was something amiss with the default settings, and that feared screwing with calibrated TV settings to fix it.

Getting back on topic, those screenshots are amazing Tapout, especially (atleast to me) the COD4 screenshot where I didn't initially see the hand in the shot. You know that both the display, and the game, are amazing when the camouflage is so good that someone (maybe just me..?) can't tell that there is anything other than a pistol floating in mid air, in the middle of a field.

Ok, so I've made a lot of changes to my set (including lowering my sharpness like crazy :P).

for the price you wont find anything that's a better value. DLPs aren't all that great many more. They are lagging way behind in technology (when oh when will darkchip4 come out) and aren't an overly great value anymore considering they are basically neck and neck with plasma and lcd in price

This year's Samsung LED DLP 61" 1080p is currently $1674 on amazon while last year's 58" Panasonic 1080p Plasma is currently $3299. I have last year's Samsung HLT6187S and love it. I feel it has a better picture than my dad's new Sony Bravia LCD too.

Id take plasma over DLP anyday also, granted you get one of the newer plasmas (samsung, panny, my favorite Kuro). DLPs have a nice natural picture, but the image is too soft, screen unfomity isnt that great and the horrid viewing angles suck also. Im not saying they are bad, but they are 3rd best in my eyes. Bigger doesnt always mean better.

I'll give you the viewing angles on DLPs but as for me, even with a plasma I would still be sitting directly in front of it 100% of the time so it's not a concern really.

As far as DLP's are concerned, aside from the obv, they are worst set you can game on. Since they are rear projection, you get loads of input lag

funny, but i love my launch console, i've removed the x-clamps and havent even had a game freeze in over a year.


teaser pic till i finish... i brought the oppo back out since i returned my HDDVD player/movies for a full refund (thanks walmart), also moved the ps2 and dreamcast into the bedroom with my modded 360 media extender that i havent used since i started beta testing this divx standalone unit (which is great).

gonna roll the stand out tomorrow and zip tie some of the cabling, it was neat till i pushed it back, most of it wont be shown because the 360 will be on the right/second shelf...

i've also got to finish my backlight project, as i'm not completely satisfied with the beta version i'm running now :D

I've never noticed any

and I know it's not a scientific test.. but whenenver I run the lag calibrator on GH I always get 0ms........ compared to about 18ms on my LCD monitor

There is no true way to measure input lag, other than getting out an old crt playing the same source (a game) side by side with another set. The lag you're referring to is motion lag, the reason you get 0 is the same reason why dlps have no motion blur or ghosting if you will. has nothing to do with the input lag.

There is no true way to measure input lag, other than getting out an old crt playing the same source (a game) side by side with another set. The lag you're referring to is motion lag, the reason you get 0 is the same reason why dlps have no motion blur or ghosting if you will. has nothing to do with the input lag.

What is the difference between the two? I own one of Sony's XBR2 Dlpish (Lcos) sets an don't notice any lag while playing games, I mainly play FPS games, but just because I don't notice any lag doesn't mean there isn't any.

26-60" as far as LCD weight goes.... it's a standard wall mount that mounts to the wood piece.... and for 55 bucks (almost 90% off!!), it wont hurt to sell the stand if i ever get a new tv that the stand wont accommodate.

the stand even has a shelf for mounting the newer "slim" DLP's

on a Kuro, brightness should never be higher than a 2. With gamma on 3 and everything else off, 35 contrast is really not high at all and brightness at 1 still gives you plenty of shadow detail.

Yes that is true, however when you turn on DRE even to low you will introduce noise in the image and you will alter the gamma. I have my elite calibrated by UMR and I have perfect 2.2 gamma curve with DRE off. Turn it on and gamma becomes about a 2.7. Some more friendly advice, try turning your red down only about 5-7 steps in the service menu and blue up 1-2. You will get a much better grayscale. yours looked unbalanced.

Yah I just looked at your picks again, and you really should try what I told you on the grayscale. I know this is wierd telling you what settings on a forum, but I am looking on a calibrated samsung CRT monitor. What I am seeing on your display is a very noticeable color shift to your grayscale. It is not red, so its not hard to live with. Your grayscale looks more green to me then anything. Would you try moving red high down from default 7 clicks, and blue from default up 2 and tell me what you think.

What you're seeing could easily be caused by his camera. ;)

There's the reason. It's a horribly inefficient process that not only makes life more difficult, but also obscures the pertinent information.

I actually had a certified ISF calibrator from the avs forums do it. His name is Gregg Loewen. I have a Samsung LN-T5271.

As far as DLP's are concerned, aside from the obv, they are worst set you can game on. Since they are rear projection, you get loads of input lag

completely wrong... lag is introduced by processing of the signal. If the signal is a 1080p signal and the set accepts a native 1080p signal, there is no processing to be done. That means there is no lag. DLP as a technology does not introduce lag. It has to do with the processing. Gaming lag was a big issue when the set needs to scale the signal. A good way to test lag is guitar heros calibration settings. I have a samsung hls5087w and a sony 40" xbr2, I would choose the samsung dlp over the sony lcd every day of the week for gaming.

if you want 1080p native, the options are limited... virtua tennis 3, nba street homecourt, sonic (supposedly), and i think there is another 1 or 2 out there.

as far as ps3, i'd expect to see about the same amount, or maybe less, and as for more 1080p in the future, i doubt it, seeing as how most cross platform games run at a higher resolution on the xbox than the ps3

as far as native 1080p goes on PS3 it depends on if you look at is as JUST 1080p or 1920x1080p.... because there are a few games that run at 1280x1080p which is technically still 1080p

FIVE ONE SIX: What model Sharp is that?
i'm sorry, that's my bad, it's the Sharp LC-C3234U from Costco. it's alright, but it does produce some motion blur when i play video games (especially on COD4, which is what i play most) on it. it does have a lot of good features though, and it doesn't strain my eyes even though i only sit about 3 feet away from it, unlike the Vizio that it replaced. the desk, tables, mouse pads and dvd tray are all from Ikea. the drum throne is a SP (Sound Percussion) from Guitar Center, and for $29.99 it's great for RB. i got a pair of Tama Silent Tips for the sticks, and i'm going to get a pair of better looking sticks this week, when i have some time...

honestly, it really is. i used to be big into MS cordless keyboards and mice a long time ago, because they were comfortable, but they went through batteries really quickly. then, a friend of mine told me to try out the Logitech, and i've never touched a MS wireless keyboard since. i think mine has at least 3 or 4 years on it, and i've never had one problem with it. the only thing i've been noticing is that the charge on the mouse doesn't last as long as it used to, but i can still go a few days on a full charge with my PC on 24/7, and that's fine with me. they still make the keyboard, but not the rechargable mouse...

Wow I have that exact equipment stand. Got it some years back. It's really slick looking with the dark glass shelves and all. Too bad those shelves are dust magnets. lol I really like it though but I think once we go LCD we'll get something where the components are underneath the display.

How are you liking the Sharp since you made the switch from the Mitsu Jason? I am about to decide on my first 720p FP and was deadlocked between the Oppo HD70 and the Mitsu 1500 but, that Sharp looks nice!

The Sharp 12K mkII is in another class from the HC3000 and the HC3000 is better than the HD70/HC1500 , if that helps ;) .

The Sharp 12K mkII is worth the extra $ (I mean it was $10,000 a couple years back) but if you want a mint HC3000 that also happens to be ISF'd then shoot me a PM ;) (or look in the AVS classifieds , it's there) .

The couch is very comfortable and it's huge , seats 5 adults with room to spare .

I'll work on some better screenshots , that was a really quick one that I snapped off without doing anything special other than point & click and it really does not do the real image justice ( a local friend says it looks like a giant plasma ;) ) .

Congrats on the MKII! From what I've read, it really throws a great image that your sure to enjoy and with it's fully featured CMS, I'm sure that Kevin will have no problems getting it dialed in nicely for you.

I came very close to getting one when Costco had 'em for 2K but was too worried about the fan noise. Was the noise issue overblown? How does it sound compared to your old 4805?

Thanks , yeah it throws a stunning image . Easily one of the best digital projection images that I have ever seen and the krasmuzik ISF treatment should be coming soon ( he actually sounds excited about doing this one , after seeing it in action for an hour , just to see what it can do ) .

Honestly it is quieter than the 4805 but not as quiet as the HC3000 ( talking Economy lamp mode ) . I don't find it bothersome , my 360 is louder ;) . The 12K that I had seen a couple years back must have been in normal lamp mode because it was significantly louder .

taking pictures off a DLP is easily the hardest of any display.... set your shutter speed to high and you overexpose the image, too fast and you underexpose it and you get messed up looking colors from the color wheel....

I find best with a P&S is to use the spot meter and focus on a area of good contrast to get a shutter speed that accurately exposes your image... typcially you'll prolly be looking around 1/15 of a second if you're shooting iso100

Hey Guys, I'm rummaging through this thread but figured I'd check for volunteers...

I'm looking for a couple clean set up shots to use. The shot type I'm looking for would be a horizontal shot with an LCD / Plasma, maybe a couple controllers in the image(different consoles), and two consoles in the shot. Would prefer no receivers / speakers / wires.

If you have a set-up similar to that I'd love to see it! Post it here and if I want to use it I will contact you PM with details, any questions feel free to ask via PM.

actually all the shots ive seen on this page are pretty nice looking.

I just changed my entire color settings, service menu and all, and finally had the guts to change my rgb low color settings in SM also. I cant believe what a difference. Skin tones are perfect now, whites are whiter, Ill try to post shots later.

between the time i originally purchased the car until now, which has been a total of about 7 years, i've still never actually seen another 300zx with a Strosek nose in person...

^^^ Nice! As a 3D action game "Kameo" is merely OK but as an early show-off piece for 360 graphic power (even at 720p) its underrated. Those colors/textures look awesome! :)

I disagree...I think it is just the PS forums here that have the loose grip on reality but compared to other gaming forums they are still fairly tame.

It really shouldn't matter. He's just posting screenshots, not any information on where or how he got it. For all we know he's a beta tester and is simply breaking an NDA.

It's not like AVS provides details on where to obtain materials - legally they are safe.
