Nice foot rest.
lcjrodriguez 06-03-08, 04:38 PM You're right its not much.
Just Kidding!! I've always been a fan of the clean modern look. Especially when it comes to gaming/home theater setups. Unfortunately, when you're married, you have to find a happy median. So my home theater setup has all the toys that I like, with a womans touch.
I definitely want to turn the basement into a DHT, with all the beautiful high gloss black, chrome everywhere, and HUGE floor standing speakers with a projection setup big enough to appease a whole neighborhood!
Okay, so I'm being a little over-ambitious, but you never know!
P.S. I see we both have an addiction to movies Viper!

Also, is there a reason you angled your surrounds forward and not straight across or towards the back wall?

well since my surround speakers are up against the rear wall, placing them sideways would make the sound immediately bounce off the wall at the first reflection point. I felt angling them would give a more diffused sound, which, to my ears, it did. I don't remember how much the panels cost, but they weren't too expensive for the quality you get for an immediate night and day difference.

auto should be fine as long as it's in a brightly lit room. If you want it kinda dark, you'll need to rest it on top of something stable in order to minimize motion blur (I have projector, great for gaming, sux for taking pictures of)

If you had a closet enemy over or someone just hates you, imagine the bastard putting that spigot on a slow drip. Ruin your gear. And take a look at the breaker box directly over the spigot. Great self electrocution hazard right there. That can't be, I've never seen that inside a home before and I'm in real estate. Maybe a washer hookup?

hey thanks man, As far as I can tell, all of these portable units always have a secondary hose that takes air from the outside in...I don't see it with this one...does it mean that it can operate standalone (i.e I stick it in the middle of the garage and it just takes the air from the garage and spits it out cooler?)

your best bet is one of these, they were all over when i lived in germany (most homes) and we used them in iraq, small, remote controlled, and easy install (you will have to go through the wall though)
they're pretty efficient and do a great job cooling. some offer a heat option as well.

my barber has one of those in his shop, which is in an extension of house, and he loves it. he didn't want to extend the central air that he has in his house, because he wanted to have a separate climate control for the shop in the summer, so he chose one of those. formulanerd's right though, you're going to have to cut a hole in the wall behind it, but you should be able to do that yourself. also, one of the best features is that it comes with a full remote control, so you can control everything about it from anywhere in the room. i think he said that he paid somewhere in the $1500 range, and said it was worth every penny, but i don't know how many different models and price ranges there are...

there are plenty of makes and models, depending on what kind of BTU output you want, and if you need heat or not... another nice thing is how small the external unit is, wont take up much space if you had a small walkway between the garage and the fence or something of the sort. theres also no duct work, you just run the ac lines in, which IIRC are just insulated copper, and fairly small, easy install, like i said, we installed a bunch of the mitsubishi's in iraq, in crappy old buildings with no insulation and ETC, and they still cooled very well in 130+ external temps.
there is a calculator somewhere that asks for room dimensions and suggests a BTU output for your room size, thats what i'd do to get started.
also, you can learn the cooling commands from the remote to a harmony universal... that would be awesome.... activity = "summer 360", one button press and the projector comes on, stereo switches to game input, and a/c kicks on to 68* :D

football76 06-09-08, 04:49 PM Edit, Awesome setups guys, I'll post mine in a minute...
VERY nice. :D
thanks man, hard to show scale with the room but it's about 12x18 and badly in need of furniture. :) Gaming is a whole new world though moving to this from my old 42" plasma.
football76 06-09-08, 05:01 PM As Promised:
Alert- college student here.
This is my attempt to "get the thread back on track." I've posted my setup before, but it has changed a bit. I built my own stand recently. Shots are taken with a really old Canon point and shoot, then manually overexposed so you can actually see the stuff. The desk is built into an unused closet. (All funded by yours truly except the penguin, he is from the GF- she calls him paddles)
And yes, I bought Grid for both platforms.

Do those front projector screens produce the silk screen effect like rear projection hdtv's? That was one of the deciding factors for selling my dlp for a panny plasma. Thanks.
front projection has it's flaws and from what I can tell, it's SDE (different from SSE). It's only really apparent when you site REAAAALY close to the screen.
go to your neighborhood multiplex and sit really close and you'll see it. Sit an adequate distance from the screen and you'll be fine.

Deponds on the screen used. Anything decent no.
SDE aka Screen Door Effect makes the image looks like there is a screen door in front of it.

SSE is something you get on rear projection tvs because of the type of screen it uses. With my DLPs it looks like an added lair of grain when you are sitting close enough.... a bunch of speckles
spyder696969 06-10-08, 11:32 AM SSE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silk_screen_effect
SDE: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_door_effect
The latter is easily removed by moving a tad back from the screen.
The former often cannot be avoided or fixed by any means.
Yet another reason I prefer FP units.

even more so than SDE is

Never noticed it but I guess it might have a little dip in the center. It's not from warping, I just have to adjust the glass.

Cool, I just bought it used yesterday for a 100. It's for a Panasonic DLP. Just about a perfect fit. I don't like the lip on the front but once set up it didn't bother me.

W.Ritzen 06-13-08, 11:49 AM Thanks guys, i really like achievements. I think it adds a lot of extra replay-value to a game, so i try to get everything out of the games i play. The Hulk ad isn't in German, it's Dutch. I'm from Holland originally, so that's where the gamertag was made when i got my first xbox. I moved to Texas last December, i changed all the settings on my 360 & tag to where i live now but the ads are still in Dutch, the rest is all english. I'm using a Samsung LN46A550 btw!

Entity X 06-16-08, 09:38 PM I'm loving that TV Viper, you've made me consider it myself.
Some quick questions if you don't mind, are you a hardcore gamer? noticed any input lag? anything you don't like about it for gaming? If you had your time again would you still purchase it?
My big issue for HDTV's is input lag, but i also want a great/accurate image.
Fanaticalism 06-16-08, 10:32 PM That specific set is pretty solid in regards to input lag (I think he has the PNA550) which if I am not mistaken has about a 30ms lag which is no where near noticable to most human beings. But if you're feeling frisky, go for the PNA650, which has even better color accuracy (the A550 is no slouch either), and IMO looks much better than its lcd counterpart in regards to the ToC. Heck, you can even look at the LNA650 which is a great panel as well. Either way, you can't go wrong.

Is there something wrong with me liking guns? Or are you guys just scared of them?

Anyway, back on topic I guess.........Nice theatre setups guys! lol :D
When I was in LA this spring, me and my friend went to a gun range out their and shot off a 45 and a 9mm, the kick on the 45 was shock for me. After we were done there I just couldn't understand how some people could be against gun control. If you like that type of thing go for it, but for me I had more fun at these three places.

Nice. Might I recommend you space out those speakers a bit and move the storage units flanking the TV to another wall? The TV appears a bit overwhelmed by both your sound system and all your media so close. Proper spacing would give the entire system (and room) better flow and symmetry. It seems evident that it's a small room (and you said you're in transition) but I think you can do better.
Perhaps some acoustic treatment would be in order as well, considering the hardwood.
Not dissing in any way, just trying to help since you asked. :)

No dissing, I appreciate the advice (i dont know everything, and i am open to ideas). What do you suggest w/ "acoustic treatment" im not familar w/ that term.
Yeah, its a small room, I usually have the speakers spaced out a little more. As far as the storage units, im kinda cramed for space.. I might be mounting the tv on a wall between the entrance door and a closet door (There is a 50" wide wall), Then i would put all my AV equipment in the closet and run an hdmi cable to the tv. I have to see what my best options.
But thank you for the input.
I will try to get some better pictures (of the entire room)

What TV is that? It looks like it might be a Samsung.
Fanaticalism 06-21-08, 12:34 AM Aristo, you can start by adding an area rug. Also, those speakers are severely toed (tilted inward). You have created a very narrow soundstage (area where sound is dispersed aka sweet spot). Moving the storage towers to a completely different area would be optimal so that the speakers can be pushed back and spread further apart, but space constraints are not visible in that picture.

FIVE ONE SIX 06-21-08, 01:23 AM Any suggestions/comments are apreciated.[/IMG]
for starters, condense those 2 bookcases into 1, you don't need 2 and it just makes a small room seem even smaller. second, subwoofers usually work best in corners, so when you get ride of the bookcase on the left move the subwoofer into that corner as a starting point. and c, move the 1 bookcase (since you only need one) away from your entertainment center, that way you could actually move the speakers to both sides of the tv facing forward, like they should be.
with all due respect, it looks like a nice room and it certainly has a lot of potential, but it's way too cluttered considering it's size. i'm not saying that you don't need the stuff that's in the room, i'm just saying that there's better ways to present it and take up less space at the same time. for example, get a rolling rack (or garment rack) and some hangers, and you can get rid the shelves with folded clothes in the background...

I will try the rug, also sorry for the speakers, they are usually more spaced out and facing forward, i had it like that during cleaning, and i didnt rearrange (thank you for picking that up). longhorns 06-21-08, 12:42 PM Hey aristo, what does the wall behind you look like, behind the person who took the picture i mean. If it is a flat wall, it might be better to (looks wise) flip the room around, put the tv on that wall, and your couch under the slanted wall where your tv is right now. Only problem i keep thinking about, and i am not an expert on sounds in any way, is that the slant will deflect your surround sound to places it shouldn't go? maybe? lol

honestly, i wouldn't even waste my time mounting the tv on the wall, only because it looks like it would be too low on the wall. i would try mounting the speakers on the wall though, because it could free up the space under them, say for the subwoofer on the left side and maybe an organizer (or 2 short organizers if necessary) for your games on the right side. like i said, it has a lot of potential...

And ditto on some of the other comments. Get rid of at least one bookshelf, move the speakers back, put the SW in the corner, add a carpet, etc. Also dumb question I'm sure, but what is the white thing plugged into the 360? I can't tell from the pic, but am curious.

Hey, thats Arnold you are talking about, he is my idol.
the white thing in the 360 is a 160gb portable usb hardrive w/ all my music and pictures on it, this way it doesn't take up any space on the xbox hard drive.
When you say "add carpet" what do you mean, where should i put the carpet and how big.

FIVE ONE SIX 06-21-08, 05:48 PM i wouldn't add carpet, i personally like the look of an old school hardwood floor, but i would add an area rug to give it some pop. if it was me, i'd paint the walls a pastel yellow and throw down a dark red area rug, but i do watch HGTV a little too much. honestly, watch that that channel for a day, and you should walk away with some great ideas...

Mw182006 06-22-08, 01:01 PM Like the setup but it looks more cluttered than it needs to be. I'd lose the bookshelves altogether since there doesn't appear to be much on them and just put the speaker stands in their place. By the way, why are they toed in so far?
If you can't lose the shelves I'd say put the speakers inside them, assuming they fit. Then you can use the stands for your surrounds if you don't have them already.

In theory yes, but I can see a difference in black levels from other screenshots. I wouldn't have initially responded if i didn't.
You have to admit that those 6020 pics are sweet! Give props when props are due. Yeah other things effect the black level perception, like my monitor , his camera, etc.. but we can debate those things all day. The fact remains that the blacks are the deepest posted.
THe 6020 Contrast levels also give it a nice 3D effect. I've been waiting to purchase another plasma that could actually give me this experience. Many people have posted about this in the plasma forums, but these pics definitely show me proof. Now i've got to see it in person.
darklordjames 06-22-08, 04:51 PM "In theory yes ... The fact remains that the blacks are the deepest posted."

I really do love the "in theory" part! Gotta love when straight up blatant fact becomes "theory". :)

HeadRusch 06-22-08, 05:03 PM It may be a nice monitor, but you absolutely can't use pictures to judge this sort of thing.
Go take a look at screenshots from like 10 years ago, when a $5,000 LCD projector threw up 800x600 and had a 300:1 contrast ratio, and those blacks will look "inky black" too.
It may be the best monitor out there, but geeez guys understand screenshots aren't indicitive of any kind of quality.........thats why anytime a new projector comes out and someone screams "POST SCREENSHOTS!" everyone whos ever owned a projector knows "They're pretty, but they don't tell any part of the story".

LOL I had to just unwrap all my cables to install my new 606 reciever, otherwise it was pretty clean looking, but hey no one is going to see it, so like the river I go with the least resistance :D

I got it over 5 years ago, I think for CC. At that time I didn't know a whole lot about online shopping so I am sure you could find something cheaper and most likely better, I think I payed $150-200 for it if remeber right.

BigBoostDSM 06-27-08, 07:54 PM kool pics of the blue lights on the 360 can u pm me and tell me how i can do that???
Thanks  Looks like someone already posted a how-to, but the way I did it was bought a new RF module from a buddy who had already replaced the LED's. 15 bucks and he didn't want my old one.
but it would void the warranty right? Unless you can change them back cleanly...
Yes, it does. You have to open the box up. The only way you could trick them is to get a new one of those silver stickers that cover up the case where it connects.
Here's a couple new pictures that actually have games on the screen...and you can see the ring a little better here. Also moved my computer beside the stand.

Fanaticalism 07-02-08, 08:39 PM Darklord, why is it that you never have anything constructive to add? All I ever see from you is harshness, and negativity. That is called trolling I believe.
I await your inevitable derogatory, and sarcastic response.
