I'd try not giving people settings advice when you have no idea what the display looks like in person

that may work for color/contrast/brightness

but for sharpness it's easy to tell in pictures if it's set too high because your camera will not affect that and make it over sharp
in fact the only thing it would do is make it a duller image if anything

Both of my Casios in default settings will artificially sharpen images. Kodaks are also pretty notorious for oversharpening images. Oh, look at that! He's using a "KODAK EASYSHARE C743 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA" to take the pictures with. :) Additionally, whatever post software he used may have done a sharpen, either intentionally or not.

While I was using EE on some of them, I also resized all of them, which might gave caused some added artifacts.

Because there is a diplomatic and mature way of going about things. These are the AVS forums, not a Sony PS3 forum, or a Microsoft Xbox360 forum, that are plagued with adolescent, immature teens.

To me, Halo 3 is about the game play. The graphics aren't exactly what I would call "great".

Those are Event Reference monitors ( TR6 ) to be exact, they have their own power supply and are for mixing audio/ listening to mixes, they have nothing to do with the sony receiver. Thanks for the compliments and yeah thats the ikea coffee table, just make sure if you put pictures underneath the glass that you have backup pictures, because once you spill water, it goes under the glass and ruins everything ;)

Anyway, of course other colors EXIST in the game. However the dominant color palette of the game is gray and brown, just like Gears. If you honestly think Halo 3 has a rich color palette, how would you describe a game like this:

The question was whether or not the game's palette was predominately brown and gray or not. Whether or not it should be that way because of the game setting or not is another discussion. It's not a preference - I like the way both Gears and Halo look. But I can understand that the colors in both of those games are very muted in comparison to a lot of other games.

Yeah, Sundull is right. Even with the new Madden, the sky will look very different from last year, and will be more colorful. Similar to this:

Halo does have a good bit of color, for a shooter. Compare it to Gears of War, Resistance, or Call of Duty 4. Only FPS I can think of recently that was more colorful was Orange Box. Well, and UT3.

That's just the way Far Cry looked. Even the first one on PC.

Nah, your colours are cranked. The game was intended to be B&W, I have my colours set to one tick above nothing(fixes R, G and B push) and thats how it looked. In fact that's how every game is supposed to look I think.

I used to absolutely love the Nascar games back when Papyrus made them on the PC

the last game I bought and liked would be Nascar Heat at the Xbox 1 launch though. Sadly I haven't really like any of EA's games yet but we'll see how this one is

i'll vote no for nascar (or a huge number of turns on a pretty much oval track game.)

First of all, it's about the screenshots, not about wether you like NASCAR or not. Second of all, if you're not into cars and/or racing, then it's obvious you won't like NASCAR as a sport or a videogame. I personally am into cars and racing (games), and I think NASCAR has some of the most exciting races in the world. Yes, it's often going in circles (although there are some road courses), but it's not about going in circles. It's about going in circles 200 times at 200 mph in extreme conditions (heat, dehydration,...) in a car that's bouncing all over the track while there's only a few inches between the other cars to your back, front, left and right.

I live in Europe, where F1 is way bigger than NASCAR but to me F1 is the most boring racing sport in the world. The results are predictable, there's hardly any overtaking and they don't even crash that much, besides I can't relate to driving those cars at all, at least NASCAR still uses some sort of "stock" car.

NASCAR still has some of the most watched sporting events in the entire world every year, but there will always be haters right? It's cool if you don't like it guys, but I didn't know those who did like it had to justify themselves. To each his own. I personally can't stand RPG's or RTS's and hate any game/movie/book that's based on fantasy/science fiction. To me, it's boring childish crap. See how that works? The only games I play are sports games and action games like RB6Vegas and COD4. Is that ok?

I'd pay big money to see that.

First of all, it's about the screenshots, not about wether you like NASCAR or not. Second of all, if you're not into cars and/or racing, then it's obvious you won't like NASCAR as a sport or a videogame. I personally am into cars and racing (games), and I think NASCAR has some of the most exciting races in the world. Yes, it's often going in circles (although there are some road courses), but it's not about going in circles. It's about going in circles 200 times at 200 mph in extreme conditions (heat, dehydration,...) in a car that's bouncing all over the track while there's only a few inches between the other cars to your back, front, left and right.

I live in Europe, where F1 is way bigger than NASCAR but to me F1 is the most boring racing sport in the world. The results are predictable, there's hardly any overtaking and they don't even crash that much, besides I can't relate to driving those cars at all, at least NASCAR still uses some sort of "stock" car.

NASCAR still has some of the most watched sporting events in the entire world every year, but there will always be haters right? It's cool if you don't like it guys, but I didn't know those who did like it had to justify themselves. To each his own. I personally can't stand RPG's or RTS's and hate any game/movie/book that's based on fantasy/science fiction. To me, it's boring childish crap. See how that works? The only games I play are sports games and action games like RB6Vegas and COD4. Is that ok?

Now how about some more NASCAR 09 shots? :)

Let's be honest here NASCAR is about as much fun to watch as Golf and the only time it's exciting is when there is a crash (of course we don't want to see anybody injured but most people luv to see big spectacular crashes) .

That said , the screenshots make the game look excellent but after trying it out I felt like watching golf (and I hate golf) ;) .

Have you ever been to a race? The REAL fans don't like it when they crash because it brings out the caution and stops the racing. A crash also brings the danger of your driver being taken out of the race.

I've been to a race and aside from being a great lesson in marketing, it was pretty darn boring... It really is a modern day carnival.

BTW, how do you go about picking your driver? Is it as easy as "Hey, I bought Tide yesterday. I'll cheer for that guy." Or does is there something more complicated involved?

Yes, you're right genius, NASCAR is the only sport that makes use of advertising. Anyway, I think NASCAR hardly lacks personalities, they have some of the most recognisable sports stars of our day driving those cars.

I would much rather watch rally, GT Cup, or Indycar instead of NASCAR...

Ya know I'll catch hell for this, but over on the snooty PS3 forum someone posted pics of Daytona from GT5P and Daytona from NASCAR, and upon further inspection, i realized...I liked the shots of NASCAR better.

They looked more "Alive"....and of course all the PS3 nuts jumped all over me, made fun of my lineage, my mother...the usual. But Seeing these NASCAR shots, I still dig the way Nascar's playing fields look...to me GT5P looks more like a computer sim.....too much attentention paid to making sure the tailpipes on a Ferarri are prefectly round and not enough paid to the look-and-feel of the Track you're actually racing on (A common complaint of the GT series).

Much better use of shadows, normal-mapping and textures IMHO.

Loving it! This game graphically is very impressive, obviously. Surprisingly I played some public ranked games and I didn't run across any 10 years olds w/high pitched voices either! Maybe Unreal gets an older audience especially since the kiddies are busy with Halo and COD4. :D Anyway I love the gameplay, sure it's not as fast as 04 but on a console this is close as you can get to "old school" FPS action.

The shelf was bought at Lowe's. Actually, the shelf for the projector, the equipment and even the center channel were all from Lowe's. I don't remember what brand it was but they are a buy and configure yourself kind. You buy the shelfs and the pillar spacers and configure it to how you want. My dad had bought some for the kitchen setup but he used glass shelves. Which they also sell, just twice as expensive as the ones I bought.

Nice pics Scott. I'm sure the projector is really helping to keep up with that hand engineered sound system. I wish more people would post pics of their actual setups instead of just the screen. It's really getting old just seeing pics of games. People don't seem to realize that posting a pic of just the game really means nothing since the camera may not have taken a good pic and the monitor you use to view the internet may not be calibrated either. More pics of setups!!!!

I'm beginning to think that some people just do it to get a sense of accomplishment. It's not like we couldn't already see pics of the game from other websites. At least some people still hold to what we would really like to see. A pic of how people are actually gaming.

I think its fine to have the screenshot, but only when you include pics of the setup.

Yes, the screenshots are getting pretty old now. Let's see some setups. I think that was what the OP intended. Plus that was when the 360 was fairly new. So now that we know we all pretty much have the capabilities to see screenshots from video game websites, let's see more setups. It doesn't matter how they look. I like the one with the 360 hooked up to the 6" portable tv.

I have a really bad camera. The pq of the Tv is obviously not like that. It's a pretty potent little TV. I'm using it since my 40" 4071F is at my mother's house for safekeeping until I move out at the end of the month. I don't trust my current place, as they broke into it last month. For better sonic fidelity (looks like you have the room) you might try kicking those speakers a foot or two away from the wall, and find a place for the sub that isn't in a corner.

But then things won't look as nice. A tough trade. My setup sounds great but looks like ass (WAF of 0 when you put speakers 1/3 of the way into a room!) It would probably still sound good (as opposed to great) if I were arrange it in a pleasing manner...but I'm still fighting that one.

Thanks man. The walls are a little bare still (moved in about a month ago) and I need to create a bit more seating. As far as moving some things around for better audio fidelity, the sound itself sounds miles better than the crap I had before. I also gotta make it look nice for the soon to be wife.

Cool, I took a quick look and was hoping they'd have a model that was taller, but it appears 31" is about as high as they go on these wood stands...roughly 40" is what I need.

However, after seeing your pictures, I'm going to modify two old adjustable satellite speaker stands and mount the 162s...move the couch up a foot or so and throw these guys back there.

THIS is the type of shot intended for this thread! You get the benefit of seeing the setup AND the picture at the same time. The image is set within a frame that includes objects that can be easily identified (i.e., plants, controllers, water bottles, etc.) and used as a frame of reference against the image on-screen.

This sort of shot also is much more aesthetically pleasing to the eye in that it shows something in the foreground AND background, creating necessary depth while also showing ACTUAL viewing conditions, including; lighting, texture, and color palettes.

You're not that far off from having a very nice, fully completed setup, imo. Match the shimmed bookshelf up with the black media rack and perform a little wiring maintenence and you'd be golden.

The screen is a Pioneer Kuro plasma / PDP-5010FD /
Im using my 2nd PC with the Pio, just to browse the net & watch trailers. With VGA i only can run res. 1360x768, im planning to get a DVI to HDMI cable and use that instead of the VGA. The picture still sharp, not blurry at all.

The items below are a Samsung 4661; Sony STR-DG1000; Polk Monitor 60s+CS1 center; Sansui old-school cabinet speakers; and some other gear.

BTW...I am really no good at taking pics of screenshots. Some tips would be appreciated.

I actually have a MUCH nicer glass cabinet for my movies but I couldn't bring it with me because I have to drill in to the wall to mount it an I can't do that in my apartment :(

Spackling compound works wonders and fills drilled holes in seconds. You fill in the holes when you move out. Are you aware that apartment owners are required by law to repaint an apartment (and clean the carpets) when someone moves, regardless of length of occupancy? If so, then as long as the small holes are filled, there should be no charges from your deposit.

This thread has regained my interest again. I love these pics of setups. Some of you have such well designed living that allow for good symmetry. I for the life of me have never lived in such a place. I'll be posting pics of my new setups once my new plasma arrives tomorrow. I would love to be able to mount it, but as I live by myself I wouldn't be able to heave that thing onto the wall by my self.

I've been irking to get a 50" + Plasma for over a year, and I'll kill two wants in one shot. :)

So hopefully within the next couple of months, I'll be posting something worthwhile. i HOPE.

It's okay to post your setup again. I don't know what your setup looks like. And we would have to search through a thousand posts to find it. How do you guys get those high resolution pictures to show on your post like that? AVS will only let me upload smaller versions of my pics.

Well you can say that his pics he took with his camera look good on your computer screen. But you really have no way of knowing how well they look on his screen.

This has been discussed a number of times.. People like getting an idea of how a game sort of looks on their setups.

If people were just posting setup pics, the thread would be slow as hell.

Basically, get over it.

Viper can you post some more SCIV screens? Ivy, Asteroth and Nightmare. Game looks slick.

The WHOLE POINT of including a shot of (or at least part of) the setup along with the game image is to allow the viewer to have a frame of reference. When people see common, everyday things in the shot that they absolutely KNOW what they should look like, we eliminate the need to continually state over and over again that screenshots are undeniably worthless because of the differences in a particular monitor or settings. This particularly holds more weight with games than with film, which may already include something on-screen that could be used as said reference.

One could take a game image by itself, as shown through a $35 Walmart TV or even simply ripped from a website, and photo-shop the s#!t out of it and get people to rave about the supposedly "phenomenal black levels" or "insane color palette" of a particular game or TV 'till the end of time. (I'm not saying that's what people do here, I'm simply saying it can be done without a real-world environment backdrop that would expose such a ploy.)

Sadly, it appears we're destined to simply see posts of every 30 seconds of every game ever released (or even not yet out, in some cases ;)) from start to finish without the benefit of said doughty and cogent tactics mentioned in the first paragraph above. :(

If you follow the scene, he pretty much posts games the day they are released online or the day after. SC was released in the last day or two...and voila, he's got pics of it up. You can check most of his posts against the ISO release dates and see they match up. No reason for him to lie or try and push other shots off as his own. He's been doing it for awhile now.

All a discussion like this does is serve to inform more people of what Viper is doing and point out that anybody with an internet connection and no morals can do the same , it does not belong here at AVS . So simply allow Viper his jollies and not talk about how or where the games come from because every time he posts shots of an unreleased game this same stupid discussion comes up , for the sake of the forum just move along and accept that Viper is a self proclaimed game pirate .

I understand, but IMHO in order to really see what a game looks like on-screen it must be viewed in a completely darkened room. Again IMO

Josay: Can you give me some more details of those LEDs? They look pretty cool. How are they wired, where did you get them, how much, etc.


I purchased these lights from (am I allowed to say?) Costco. They ran me 50$ for six light bars and all the wiring/mounting hardware needed. No modding plug n play. I've noticed that if you buy them direct from the Mfgr, they will run a ton more money for some reason?

Nice shots BFJ! I thought the bigger CRT's didnt have a glass screen? Don't get me wrong I prefer glass over that anti glare crap the picture just pops alot more with the glass screen like yours!

Thanks MASKOAA. You are right about the Protective Screen. Though it doesn't do well when it comes to glare, the POP I get from it is what's keeping me from going Flat-Panel. Not to mention FP prices.
