People shouldn't worry too much about the quality of their images. This thread, for much of the time since its beginning, had been far more about, "Me first!" than anything else. :( Since it endured those head-shaking, pfft-inducing, and eye-rolling times, it can survive a few less than stellar pics. :)

i went through the first 110 pages of this thread and it's amazing how much things have changed. the pictures taken before look like crap compared to the pics we take now. lol somehow people still managed to say things like "that looks amazing", "your setup looks awesome" lol

i think the biggest difference is how many people actually have hdtvs now. a lot of the people coming into this thread before didn't have an hdtv. they would just make comments on the pics. even with the economy and everything else it's just amazing how people(including myself)can afford blu rays, tvs, and sound equipment.

so for those of you who use bias backlighting: It was my impression that it should be at the 6500 K color temperature (or as close as possible). I've seen some pics in here that use backlights that are much softer than that. How does this effect your viewing experience and, would I be just as good off with a softer bulb?

Thanks guys! Yes they are Klipsch - although I almost went with BIC's! I just updated the post with a view of the rear.

The pics are a little out dated though. I snagged a pair of RS-52's @ Tweeter and moved my old rears (RF-62) up front and they now sit next to my RF-82's. My wife isn't too happy about having a 4 tower front stage! I haven't hooked all 4 up at once yet but eventually will for some shits and giggles. :D

Center channel is a RC-62 and sub is a Polk PSW10 accompanied by 2 Aura Bass Shakers mounted under the sofa. Makes the sub sound/feel HUUUUUGE! Great for those on a tight budget.

Also....we have since sold the white dust collector we called the Wii/Wii Fit combo. ;)

i assume youre talking to me.. i made the cover myself with a template and printed it on some photo paper. the foam on the 2 headsets i own changed color over time. i dont even use them that much so i dunno why that happened. my friend has an older headset and his changed color too. probably a result of cheap materials on microsofts part.

no, not a plasma, though it does have EXCELLENT black levels, 120hz, 47" and under $1k.... this TV was an absolute STEAL.

i previously wouldnt have even considered a Vizio, but they've REALLY stepped up their game!

i did a lot of research, comparison and shopping around, and i couldnt even find anything comparable from ANY brand unless i wanted to pay 60%+ more in $$$

Holy crap, for less than $1K? O__O

That sounds like an absolutely worthwhile purchase.

Does it have frame interpolation? I'm one of those people that LOVES frame interpolation for video games even if it has minor input lag (not enough to mess up my gaming skills).

I had a 40" 120hz Sammy, and I miss it badly. Playing 30fps games at 60fps was quite an experience.

it has 120hz, with "smooth motion" and "real cinema". both settings have variable intensity settings, but i havent tried with video games yet, i use VGA for the 360, and the VGA on this TV is perfect (1080p, 1:1, no post processing, very little display lag) but i am going to connect it on component and give the 120hz a try.

Shin CZ
01-10-09, 06:26 PM
VGA on these sets turn off 120hz and revert it back to 60hz, which is why you don't have input lag issues, but you also won't get the benefits of 120hz when gaming.

You'll undoubtedly notice some input lag and some artifcats here and there, but being able to play most games at nearly 60fps over the normal 30fps is just awesome.

yo. isnt this the Vizio Xvt model your talking about? if so costco has a coupon for it for $300 less than their regular price ($880 last time i looked) so final price would be about $580.

the regular price was NEVER $880 (i wish!), not even for the 42"

costco price for 47" = $1299 - $300 coupon = $999
costco price for 42" = $999, no coupon.

and a 37" version of the XVT doesn't exist.

exact same tv I have. did you break in your plasma before hooking up your 360?

Yep, did the 100+ hours using an SD card when I wasn't watching anything on the TV.

why do you have 2 hd-dvd drives?
My DVD drive failed on my old HTPC and so I bought another 360 HD drive since it was cheap, $25 shipped from a member on another forum.

looks like one of them is for the HTPC, and at about $40, why not :). though i'd personally stealth mount the drive behind one of those 5.25 bay doors ;)

I just got an LG GGC-H20LK BD/HD-DVD drive to go in the HTPC, so the 360 drive is going into a box, gonna use it as a spare.

do they even make hd dvd movies anymore?

they don't make any new ones, but they have great deals on the old stock.
Transformers Special Edition was $2.00
Army of Darkness was $5.00
Planet Earth was $36
Mission Impossible Collection was $20

IMHO a sound bar will never be able to duplicate the sound and immersive feeling you get from a set of quality surround sound speakers.

01-16-09, 12:24 PM
Yeah Gotta love the Kameleon. That things been working fine, going on 7 years.

I was impressed with the soundbar at first, but "swamps" got it right, you will never get true, realistic surround sound from a soundbar. Plus it really only give you surround sound when you sit in one specific point in the room. If i move two feet to the left or right, bye bye surround sound. LAME.

Yes sir, it is the Philips 47" 120Hz 2ms 7403. Bought it a month ago and I am very happy with it.

I'm sure the only reason someone asked if that was a Philips is because of the first couple pictures of the bright red bias light. However, I thought that your particular 7403 model doesn't have ambilight. Did you make you own backlight or something?

I really need to get pictures of my 42" 7432 LCD (last years model) that does have the ambilight on it posted on here. I bought a house a couple of months ago and still don't have the surround sound or HD-A2 hooked up yet. Need to get some speaker stands and run the wire, but a lot of other things take precedence here for now. :(

Anyway, nice looing setup. I am happy with my 7432 so I am sure the 7403 is great too. Love the flower shot too;)

Yeah I kinda thought the same thing, seeing that you can't see the logo. Or I thought they were just thoroughly researched on their different sets. Either way. It's a Philips and I love it.

The light is actually a yellowish white, but the wall is painted red with a semi-gloss (not my choice and will be painting). My hopes are to go with a somewhat dark grey with a matte finish. Also the light really isn't that bright to the naked eye, the camera in complete darkness just overexposed the photo a little. But I think it actually turned out good. Just shows a little more brightness than what you actually see.

But good call on the 7403 not having the ambilight. Alot of people just assume it does. I actually rigged that up myself with some $10 8' LED Rope Lighting sold at Home Depot. Got some sticky back cable hangers from the wiring department for about another $3... and bam. You've got your own Bias Lighting, and it only took like 5 minutes to hook up.

I have the lights hooked to my receiver so they turn on and off with the components.

Using the Harmony 880 remote really adds to that. When you can press one button and everything (including my ceiling fan and overhead light) adjust to the activity you've selected, it really floors people when they see it for the first time. My fan and lights dim, TV, BR and/or Xbox, Receiver, Sub, Bias Lighting, and everything else clicks on with the press of one button. Just got the remote a few days ago so i'm bragging a little... :D lol But thanks for the compliment. If you get some pics of yours I would be really interested. I haven't seen many people with the Ambilight models. Cheers.

Oh yeah, and those are my favorite flowers.... Most beautiful plant. For sure!!

Posters can get really expensive. I looks around for posters and frames quite a bit and found them to be pretty crazy. Nice frames usually run between 60-200 a piece. Original posters from any popular movies before say like 1995 are very expensive as well. I ended up going to walmart to look for some posters and found poster frames there as well for 16.99 each. They dont look cheap once their on the wall and do the job just fine.

mrdems83
01-19-09, 04:09 PM
Also blockbuster vids are now selling movie poster already framed and textured for id say 19.99. They dont look bad either. if its something youd really like to stand out or maybe a piece that you really care about id get it custom framed. I have taken all my poster in to get framed and textured. But thats just me. Or if you find high res images online you can take them to a sign shop and have it digitally recreated.....I have a halo banner that was made for me that way. It came out really nice and detailed.

Ill take some pix and post them tomorrow. As far as cost it really depends on what you are looking to have framed. You need to find a frame shop and speak with someone to give more of an idea on pricing. The digital image I think is worth the money but can get pretty costly if you want to have large picture..lets say 4'X3'. Ill ask my GF since she is the one who did the digital image for me and also my Theater role call sign. She happens to do graphic design for a sign company.

If you are in the bay area, like to drink and have fun, have a basic level of sportsmanship, and a good sense of humor, ....then yes. The more the merrier. I have another tv in another room that we use when more people come over. We have had 5 players online without lag, even though I only have 768 mb upload speed. The game set up saves me money. I don't go to bars much anymore. Friends bring over pizza, etc. And lots of good times. When its just one friend, I put porn on the 3rd monitor to distract my friend. Unfortunately it works in reverse...I get distracted.

Do you worry about having the TV on a small stand? I once had a smaller stand than the width of my TV , but the actual stand fit on it well enough & it was a flat panel.
Seems like a DLP would fall off easily with a little push.

not worry at all. i made sure to see whether it will fall or not but i got those floor speakers that i hardly use to hold the tv in place. i did push the tv close to the wall also so that way it won't tip over in the front. thinking about putting some of the stuff in a public storage but don't know if its a good idea or not. too much stuff lying around that i can't make it organize. need to find a bigger place.

I don't think you need to put things in storage. You just need to make the area look less "busy" by removing the little things. You can make the area look tidier by taking everything off the wall, except the speakers and by limiting ornaments to no more than one per shelf/table top etc.

Good luck.

The big thing to do to make it look more organized is to hide most, if not all, the wires, especially the surge protector. Also, remove the clutter on the shelves and the wall.

I think the biggest issue you have is that there is NO THEME in any of the images shown...either before or after the switch. There seems to be a hodge-podge mix of masculine (black shelves and AV gear) and feminine (pastels and curtains/castles) with a dash of child-like ecclecticism (plastic figurines) all thrown together in one space.

If possible, a compromise should be formed in which this AV room features AV gear and very little else. This compromise can make for this room to be a "man's" room, and allow for another room to become a "woman's" room, where there are so many pretty knick-knacks, frills, and lace that it makes your testilces shrink 82.3% just by looking in there. :o Don't forget that kitchens/bathrooms stuffed with ducks/cows/sheep also count as a room! ;)

If only one room is available, then I suggest going neutral, wherein earth tones and subtlety reigns supreme. If that is not an option, then "neuter" is yet another choice, where all colors (save but black and white) are eliminated completely, and a minimalist approach is dominant. :)

Just a few suggestions, nothing personal, as you did invite comments and ideas! :D

So these are a combination of 360 shots, before and after, and replaecement pictures.

I had a Philips that was damaged due to incorrect packing materials, which was replaced, and obviously I changed the color of the wall during the swap out. Sorry some of the pics are a little out of focus. My Nikon has been giving me problems lately. Picked the best ones for you guys though.... Also, i've rigged up some rope lighting behind the TV to create a Bias Lighting Solution, which was one of the main reasons for changing the wall color and finish. Went from a Semi-gloss to a matte.:D

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1383.jpg

Above: So this is a before shot. Before everything... replacement, prime, paint.

Dave, or others, if you care to look closely you can easily see the damage to the top of the bezel. There was much more around the rest of the set but you have to be at the right angle, right flash, yada yada, to see it

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1339.jpg

This one is before, with the lights and TV off, and the Bias solution turned on. See how much sheen is coming off that Semi-gloss paint?

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1359.jpg

Before, TV On, Bias On. And one of the most beautiful flowers on the planet... :p

Now for after.... I want honest opinions too if you guys care to give any input, suggestions, or comments.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1388.jpg

Daytime... Bias Off. Also taken during the time of day my room is the brightest at around 11:00am. (not many windows)(not a bad thing)(to me... lol) lmao

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1387.jpg

Same timeframe with the TV On, and the Bias On. You can actually see some of the lighting creeping out under the bottom left side of the set. These were taken from my, (very worn in) seating position in the room. I have since fixed the underhang.

http://i134.photobucket.com/albums/q85/rufesnowtravel/DSCN1389.jpg

This one is actually still in the middle of the day. Around noon. I just covered the one window in this room and got it as dark as I could. You get the idea though.

you setup seems fine. not sure why you need anyone else's opinion except your own. It's your setup man, be proud of it no matter what. When upgraditis hits, do your homework and then act on it.

the green wall is much more soothing to the eye than the porno red that you used to have

less blur on pics too. Use a tripod or put it on a non moving table and use the 2/10 sec timer to take your shots. If not, lookup how to adjust ISO, shutter speed and aperture on your camera. I know this is an AV board but that being said, these guys are HD snobs. They want to see details.

I'm not the best at taking pics, just learning myself, so these are picture taking tips are the stuff that I learned before and entirely unrelated to AV

Awesome thanks man... I knew I was on to something as far as the ISO. Just didn't adjust the shutter speed. Need a tri-pod too.

True about the set-up though. It is mine, but i'm open to feedback. That is how I got to the humble set-up I currently have. Either way I already got something out of it by you helping me w/ the camera settings. Thanks.

Is media extender better then the other opition now for Vista/360 and media? Or is better to go the folder route?

I would say better through the folder, or faster anyway. But more visually appealing in the Windows Media Center. Plus you can access internet videos and different features you don't get through just straight streaming.
shorten your exposure time

I figured it was exposure. What would I look for in the settings to do this? Sorry for the lazyness and ignorance. I'm at work and don't have the camera with me. I was thinking maybe there is a common term used to change these settings. (other than exposure time, or shutter speed) I looked through the cameras settings pretty thoroughly and don't recall seeing anything to that affect. Thanks in advance.

most point and shoots have a manual mode, then you typically navigate the settings that are on screen, there wont necessarily be somewhere in the menu.... you're looking mainly for shutter speed, and i'd try the ISO on auto, or somewhere near 100.

here are some picture sets showing the difference:

all photos share these basic settings...
f/3.1
shutter priority
no flash
auto white balance

its still buggy, but thats to be expected, overall it's providing a better expirience than the first year of vista (vista after sp1 isnt too horrible though)

seven is really quick though, early benchmarks show better performance than vista, and on par or better marks than XP, this is with the debugging code still in, which typically degrades performance quite a bit, i'm excited for GA release this fall/winter.

as for the background, it was part of some 1080p "game wallpaper" pack i downloaded... none of them seem to be from any games i have seen, maybe just inspired by them. check interfacelift for some cool wallpaper.

Using your pictures as a reference, these look a little under-exposed. Thanks for the help again, you've got me on the right track for sure... One thing I did notice, that isn't visible to the eye, is in a few of those first pics, there are some vertical lines. the lines, i believe, are known as "moiré" and thats just the way the sensor in the camera is seeing the pixels in the tv, as far as i know thats normal, and i get the same thing when i am too close.

from wikipedia:

"Taking a picture of a TV (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television) screen with a digital camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digital_camera) often produces severe moiré patterns."

I think it might be my monitor or perhaps the network here at work. The dots move around and are never in the same spot, like inside the wheels of the car, or around the bezel of the TV. Almost like those little twinkling spots you can add to pictures in photoshop. Oh well... at least it is just on my end.

i have the same card, except from eVGA (i hate PNY, but thats another story.) it's a great card, especially @ the $35 i paid for it :D

also built my entire htpc from scratch, using the antec veris 430 black

Nice that case is really sweet. I wanted to build mine in a case, but the compaq was such a steal I couldn't pass it up. Plus I have the PC in an air return closet on the other side of the wall so you don't see it (or hear it, as you know that graphics card can sounds like a jet sometimes). I was going to go with eVGA, always have, but I had some BB giftcards I had to get rid of and Fry's wouldn't buy them from me.... lol :D

So I made BB price match and picked that one up for $120, after the gift cards I paid about $50. I just got all this up and working, so I haven't even loaded a single PC game on the computer.

I would like to see at least one, but like I said don't plan on doing a whole lot of PC gaming. I'm a console gamer for the most part.

nice, i spent about 400 on my htpc... ive played fallout 3 and spore on it with kb/m from the recliner, works pretty well but i'd rather just use the controller mostly.

I've been using Vista since before it was released in a dual boot situtation.
I'm starting to get sick of it through. Outlook stopped working for mail merge and last all my contacts for a week and now today (did some up dates) it seems to be working fine.

Is that gun in crackdown a purchased weapon pack? My file corrupted :(
Man that looks high up, where is that?

If you want to play PC games using a controller check out a program called pinacle. Something like $20 (there is a trial) which has big name games already mapped to the controller so you just plug the controller or the wireless pad (for the 360 controller)

I played throught Hitman Blood Money on PC on every difficulty using wired 360 controller and no cheats, so I think that right there tells you it works well.

we have issues with outlook 07 and vista here.... i just use thunderbird, it's much more stable, faster, and never had any issues. its from mozilla and supports plugins just like firefox.

no, i havent purchased the pack yet, a friend asked me if crackdown was any good, and i felt compelled to finish it.... that sniper is the "long shot", which i believe is a shai-gen rifle.... only carries 10 rounds which sucks, but if you're fighting shai-gen on the rooftops, there are always tons of snipers for ammo.

i actually got higher yesterday, to the very top of the third highest building in the game, it's a shai-gen building, the #2 highest is the main shai-gen boss, and the highest being the "keep". i'll post the higher pictures when i get home tonight.

yea, i used a wired 360 controller for TF2 and Fallout3, works well without any software, particularly in any game that are certified GFW (360 controller support is built in) i just need a wireless gaming adapter, and i haven't tried the compatibility with Windows 7 yet, but i'm gonna throw vista back on another drive and dual boot.

I know this a little off topic, but does it play well with other microsoft products? I have literally thousands of contacts and often send them all e-mail's from Microsoft Word, mail merge function.

short answer since this is off topic, no... not really. but then again, i dont use ms office either, i use open office.

the integration is the ONLY reason i haven't deployed thunderbird/openoffice/etc to the employees in my office.... that and buggy MS software and issues means i still have a job :D

heres an update to our living room.
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd292/tronn4/DSCN0054.jpg

Equipment is nothing fancy.... yet.
52in 1080p sony w3000
ps3 in the living room mainly for blu ray
directv hd dvr hr20
some panasonic vhs/ dvd player/recorder
the rest is just for show. an older sony receiver plus its cd player and amp

now that i look at the pic i see the tv is crooked. i'll fix that.
the chair will be gone as well. the future of this setup will have a rack system built into the wall in about the same place its at now. wires all hidden. power on the other side of the wall.
the room is too small for a 7.1 audio system so i have another sony 5.1 system i have yet to unbox. nothing fancy. HTIB.

The living room used to be clutter like this:
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd292/tronn4/2004_0101Image0003.jpg

i definetly like it better know with a minimalist approach.

one of our bedrooms i like to call my COD war room:
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd292/tronn4/DSCN0063.jpg

again nothing fancy. vizio 37in 1080p xbox 360 elite with 20gb hdd (havent received transfer cable yet microsoft!) no sound system except for tv's speakers. it works.

right now gutting out our other bedroom and will have a better setup in about 2-3 months but this'll do for now.

First of all;

Mark H..

completely blown away. Perfect approach, perfect photography, looks great.

Formula,

if your still watching this thread. I've since switched to Avira, via download.com. I was wondering if it was worth it to allow my 'PC Spyware Doctor' by PC Tools, and my 'Registry Mechanic', also by PC Tools, to renew their subscriptions..

They are set to renew next month and wasn't sure if purchasing the $30 version of Avira, would eliminate the need for those additional programs. They have worked well while using AVG Free 8.0, but both Spyware Doctor and AVG are a little more taxing on the PC than this Avira...

I like...

Also is there a site I can go to see what games are compatible with the 360 controller?

Were you playing Crackdown on PC or 360?

MarkH ,

Beautiful Living Room but it's screaming for a bigger display , maybe something in the 46" range so that the display does not become the focal point of that awesome looking room :D . I think much bigger than that and the display would overtake the room ( which I would guess is possibly what you don't want by keeping the size down ;) ) .

Well done , you get the three C's award , classy , contemporary and clean :D !

How on earth did you get a SUV up there?

if you hold B in that truck it will stick to the wall for about 15 feet or so, and if you time it just right, you can keep climbing, its difficult to get the hang of because if you dont time it right, the hydrolics on the truck push you far off the wall.

i was trying to find a spot do get the 3 flips achievement, but the SUV just doesn't flip very fast, even that high up i can only get 2.5 flips.

So I just bought a Techcraft stand last night to replace my aging sony stand. It was so difficult finding a stand to accommodate the damn center channel I have. Shelf pace really becomes a premiuim when you have all 3 consoles and a Paradigm CC-370.

I am unsure whether to keep the speaker on the Pioneer 5080 or not. I do not use it. I contemplated using it as a center speaker but the wiring would not work and it was rated at 18 watts. Anyhow any advice you guys have on how to make this setup better would be appreciated.

Definitely remove that speaker bar from the Pioneer. :)

If you did want to use it as a center channel though, you probably could open that speaker bar up and look in to replacing the stock speakers with something nicer, and even re-wire it to work off of a single input. If your receiver is new enough to have YPAO then it could even end up sounding pretty good.

I'd hardly call anything shown "crap" as you so "articulately" put it. PS3, HTPC, 360, cable box, receiver, TV, DVDs, etc. If anything, the Xbox is the "crappiest" thing shown, at least in terms of being the most likely to be thrown in the garbage soon.

I'm actually more worried that it's sucking up carpet bits/dust sitting on the floor like that. Maybe a better solution would be to lay it horizontally under the PS3 and adjacent to the CD/DVD case? There appears to be just enough clearance there and airflow would be increased exponentially.

Urgh? 2 different screens? all but the second to last shot have a black wall. the second to last has only a black border with a white wall

nice setup. i'll man up and say its better than my cod4 war room (lol). couch looks comfy. this first shot looks like the kid is controlling the starship enterprise.

Yeah...that CoD shot was when we just moved in the house and I was in the midst of making my 'Man Room' so the screen wall was not painted at that time.

Tried to keep my 2 yr old son away while taking the shot but u know kids.....they find themselves in the picture somehow.

It seems overwhelming at first but one gets used to the larger screen over time:). When I was building my screen, I was actually thinking of going with a 92" but at max zoom on the PJ, it easily threw 120" without SDE being a problem so I went for the biggest screen size from 12 feet away. Only bad thing is standard movies (even though up-converted by my HTPC) still look nowhere like BR or HD TV. Bad source simply looks worse while good sources (e.g BR) look mind-blowing.

Crank BR....

Is it just me, or does the TV look a little off level in this picture?

its funny you guys think that.... its actually the wall... the ceiling is slanted.... if you put a level measure on it, its actually straight... the basement is diagonally challenged.. lol

thats what sucks about my basement... the floor is in a slant and the ceiling where the tv is slanted as well. when you are sitting, it looks straight but the ceiling sometimes throws it off

I got the joke, but it's more true to life than you might think. In contrast, I see many setups where someone has spent $4,000+ on a TV and $0 on speakers...content to listen to 3W paper cones!
