View Full Version : So, post your 360 screenshots and tv u r using
god that is a massive speaker! compared to that 50" tv, it looks ginormas!!!!:D
At least with a small screen you can sit closer! But bad sound is bad sound no matter how close you sit!
mikeloxlong 02-18-09, 02:32 PM pretty hard to go back to 50" after watching at 120" :D
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/BW12.jpg
this is what I want to do next although it might be overkill...It's like having inventory sitting there, taking up space!

Fragster 02-18-09, 08:50 PM Hey Pio
Is that a HP screen by any chance?
thejokell 02-18-09, 10:00 PM where is before?
Somewhere in this thread... ;)
http://www.thejokell.com/web/newsetup.jpg
It used to be on the other side of the room, and I replaced the center channel and moved some stuff around. I'm in serious need of a speaker upgrade, which may happen this summer.
mikeloxlong 02-18-09, 10:00 PM whew, I thought it meant Hewlett Packard!

I like it now than before. The speakers are moved out a bit and it frames the TV nicer. Also, the 360 is on top now! LOL!

Nice.
IlliniFan99 02-20-09, 11:07 AM A bunch of clearance priced goodies from a discount fabric store, and a staple gun ;)
The floor is just painted concrete with a couple area rugs.
I'm a lazy cheap bass-turd :D
Saved my hard earned $$$ for the important stuff,
like decent AV electronics and some Great powered leather recliners, the rest doesn't matter once the lights are out.
more pic's and details in the link in my sig

Nice clean setup, as always. Do you have video a switcher to switch between the different monitors?
Renagade 02-20-09, 12:37 PM Epson PowerLite Home Cinema 1080UB (UltraBlack)
Shelf mounted, about 12'-6" from lens to screen
http://members.shaw.ca/piomaniac/BW06.jpg
I picked it for the PQ, Great Black Levels/Contrast ratio
...and it was cheaper than my 50" plasma :D
Now that's nice!!
DaGamePimp 02-20-09, 02:20 PM Nice clean setup, as always. Do you have video a switcher to switch between the different monitors?
Thanks , it's a work in progress .
Sure do , can have any system on any display with the push of a couple buttons ( must be a mile of cable back there though ;) ) .
Thanks chiliDog .
PioManiac ,
Have you considered ceiling mounting the Epson to gain some more view distance (by moving the shelf system behind the seating) ? I can picture that room totally finished after viewing your diagrams and it should be excellent ! I bet the acoustics are driving you nutz though , basements can be tough ;) .

What's that little screen to the left of the computer chair?
Very nice looking.
DaGamePimp 02-20-09, 05:52 PM PioManiac ,
Yeah view distance is a personal preference sort of thing . I sit 14' from 120" and find it comfortable and still very immersive . I like to sit at about 2/3 - 3/4 in a theater so you must be a 1/3 to 1/2 guy ( I have friends like that but it makes my eyes sore pretty quick ) .
You could simply mount the back speakers above aimed down and slightly forward , have been in some pro rooms done that way and it works well . Honestly it would probably be less obtrusive (sound wise) than having the backs right behind your head . Just some friendly suggestions ;) . I dig the room and the gear , it looks great !
Be sure to keep us posted on the progression :) .

Thanks , that device is similar to a touch pad pc but it is very elaborate with voice communication and special designed software for my autistic son ( that little device is worth more than what most people have invested in their entire HT , crazy I know but he benefits from it greatly :) ) .

deathbyart 03-05-09, 12:26 PM So I started making some changes. I am renting a town home so I can't go overboard...
There is storage space underneath the stairs which put this small door next to my TV and it drove me nuts. So this previous weekend, I built a shelving unit that could be squeezed into the opening. I was very happy with the results. Plus this was my first real project building something... :D

I've seen worse from charity work I've done in the past. Suffice it to say there's not much worse than that much trash except if you throw in dead animals, literally thousands of cockroaches, and human feces. It's like a scene out of the movie Se7en but not toned down for general audiences.

pcweber111 03-22-09, 09:02 PM Wow Bozster that is a mighty impressive dual setups you have there. I am very impressed. A couple of questions though:

Very good job and it looks like you really enjoy yourself. Congrats. :)

What do you mean wire management? In the main theater the cables are tied together as much as possible so it's the best it could be without putting everything in the back wall but I needed some flexibility for adding/removing components and cables.
In the living room all cables connecting 2 AV Racks on opposite sides are routed through the thick white plastic you see on the bottom, just above the carpet so it looks less noticeable.
Alien and Robocop things I got at the Todd McFarlane store as there's one just close to my home. They had a bunch of others but I'm unsure if they have them anymore. They are kind of 3d embossed movie elements. Very cool and it was fairly cheap too but looks great.

Heh I was more joking than anything else but I'm a stickler for wire management and I could probably clean yours up a bit. It doesn't look bad by any means, just being nitpicky.

Why wouldn't you just paint your entire 360 (including the worthless LED ring) jet black?
Also, why is it torn apart like that?*
*Please don't tell me it's for "improved airflow!"

There is also tape covering every electronics device. Conspiracy theory? :)
heres some pics from an optoma ezpro 730 on a blue wall. the projector is borrowed and my time with it will be up this week. overall it can display 720p and up to 1080i, but the text in the following pics look horrible. i'm sure if i would mess with the settings it'll improve, but the menu consists of nothing more than brightness, contrast, and volume. by the time im ready to buy a projector it'll be a 1080p fo sho!

Fragster 04-07-09, 11:05 AM 10 feet as Spyder guessed ;-)! I was actually shooting for a 92" screen and when I got the PJ and I shot it on the 'then' blank white wall, I easily got 120" at full zoom so I gave myself a week to either stick to 120" or go back to my planned 92".
Ended up keeping the 120" as with most movies, they are already scoped with black bars so the actual viewing image is only 92" or so anyway.
Though OTA HDTV in full 16:9 look overwhelmingly big from 10 feet away!

What are the dimensions of your room? looks good for a small room
tatootears, thanks for the reply. i remember that brand now. when i first joined avs i hung out at the dedicated theater build threads and heard about them. didnt have an HTPC at the time and so forgot. i started a thread over in the HTPC area for Keyboards/mice combos and where people get them and about how much so maybe that'll help anyone else.
heres the link to the X-Gene company and it definetly looks like they stopped making that particular model. i'll keep an eye out.
also, like schloob asks, what are your room dimensions. looks very do-able on my end.

cool man. I never thought of having a pull down screen for projector hanging from the ceiling like that , that is otherwise out of the way when not in use.
and how you didn't have to ceiling mount the projector itself and just have it semi incospicuously on the bottom shelf of your coffe table.
that is great. I wanted to possibly do a projector and screen in my basement home theatre but just went with a 61" dlp for practicality. I never thought to have both which gives you the best of both worlds.
I could do the screen possibly in my basement hometheatre area (its not a dedicated home theatre or anything just half of my basement with sofa and tv and some decent in wall speaekrs, nice setup but nothing so fancy) or my family room where I have a 67" dlp.
the only thing in both locations would be where to put the projector. I would probably end up needing a wall or ceiling mount as I dont have a spot like with clear line of vision from a table. that is great you could do that.
I guess it just points up towards the screen and you are able to align it. funny how your screen is celing mounting it looks like? and the screen pulls down when you want to use it but looks mostly out of the way when not in use. that is great. but just ironic that then your projector isn't ceiling mounted cus for most ppl its the opposite and they just use a screen on a wall.

tattootearz 05-07-09, 11:47 PM Are those Audimute sound panels or a different brand?
Sorry Nick... those are neither...
I bought some cheap sound-proofing studio foam, the kind like you see HERE (http://www.soundprooffoam.com/soft-sound-studio-anechoic.html)
I cut out 10" & 20" squares and spray painted them black and stapled them to my walls... (hiding the staples, of course)....
I didnt like the unfinished look so I had the guys in my mill shop at work make black laminate frames with the internal measurements to fit around the foam on the walls. Screwed the frames into the walls using EZ-Anchors and that was it.
Its worked out pretty well so far, I guess.
formulanerd 05-08-09, 12:05 AM what resolution is the pc set to? it looks low? why go low? just wondering if i should change mine.

Correct Sir!
My resolution is 1280x720, which is the native res of my PJ. I find that raising the DPI to 125% makes for a very "pretty" Windows 7 & Vista image, especially on these types of large displays.

Holy crap thats a lot of blu-rays already!
Eh, I only get them on sale and off e-bay typically.
When I moved right after college, my car got stolen and all my movies were still in my car. I ended up getting my renter's insurance to cover the lost property, so I got like $15/dvd which was like somewhere around 80 (and some movies I had got used for as low as $2.50). So that went a long way towards the blu-rays.

mystik610 05-12-09, 07:15 AM Here's my set-up. Its a fusion of my wife's design choices in our living room, and my need for gadgets. I think its a good compromise (she stopped complaining eventually lol).

if you follow the thread closely, it gets annoying.
1 of 2 things can be done.
1:
typically, if someone posts 10 pictures, i wont quote them all out of courtesy, i'll quote ONE picture i'm specifically commenting/asking on/about, and then throw a direct link to the post
2:
the board can implement some code so that all quoted pictures are clickable thumbnails leading to the original image, but even 15 or so thumbnails down a line can take up quite a bit of space.
thejokell 05-26-09, 11:42 AM i didnt see it from the previous posts so this guy did me the favor... i see no problem with it.
It is super annoying for those of us who visit here often.
pcweber111 05-26-09, 01:07 PM Well it's more annoying for me because often the entire post is quoted with a single or few word response. Does the entire post need to be quoted just so you can say "good job"? Just quote one pic and do it.
RAVEN56706 05-26-09, 04:23 PM It is super annoying for those of us who visit here often.
i visit often and it doesnt annoy me. But i can see your views.
Problem is this thread is alot of pages and sometimes one person might not see the setup from another person. Thats where i see the good thing about it.
I was thinking of ways to fix it but those solutions would make it either worse or make it a hassle to see the pics
Management 05-26-09, 04:36 PM i visit often and it doesnt annoy me. But i can see your views.

Do you guys notice the blue arrow next to the quote when you quote a person?
If someone just clicks that they get taken to the person's post. There is never a need to quote the entire 15+ pictures. Just one and if someone is looking and needs to see what else was there they can get directed to the post by clicking that blue arrow next to the posters name in the quote. No matter where in the thread it is.
thejokell 05-26-09, 04:43 PM It doesn't matter. Even if we all agree to make it a rule not to quote images it will still happen.
This has been brought up probably 10 times in this thread already. Sucks, but that's the way it is.

TRD Supra 05-27-09, 12:44 PM how do you play with all the glare?
now that i have a light controlled room, i'm considering the panny 54" G10Its not as bad as people think. Few year back when you used tube TVs and CRT monitors you had glare and got by. Its no different. But as for a plasma the picture washes out with a sun light glare so that would be a problem.

I didn't add any effects to the camera or alter the image at all... only thing I did was switch to the lowest ISO setting. Ive spent some time over the years doing self calibration of my system to my own preference.... although I am limited to the capabilities of my HD70 Projector, I would say that my colors are about as accurate as they can get without a professional's assistance.

Scott Simonian 06-08-09, 01:33 PM Here's mine.
Hey, Steve. My dad has one of those equipment racks in his bedroom for his stuff. I had thought about using the same in my HT to replace the ones I use in front of my screen but was worried the glass might rattle or something. Since you and I have similar woofage I was curious if that was ever an issue with those.
Btw, did you build those acoustic panels or did you buy them?
SteveCallas 06-08-09, 03:42 PM Hey Scott.
No, the glass shelves on the audio towers don't rattle because they are supported by suction cups on the sides and back. No rattling allowed.
I built the acoustic pannels. 1/4" hardboard backing (no sides), 8" fiberglass batting, and then two layers of resin bonded, nonwoven polyester fabric. Cheap and easy.
Scott Simonian 06-08-09, 04:40 PM That's good to know. Don't need any more rattles in this room. :)
I should just go ahead and make some acoustic treatment like yours, Steve. Trying to save up for all these new speakers and stuff aint helping if I want something from GIK. Yours are much more economical for the wallet. Heehee. :D
Your apartment looks great, btw.
spyder696969 06-08-09, 06:47 PM Over a million moves and still no proper title for this thread?
While the thread title is pretty wonky, I'm more disconcerted about the 4.38 million pictures on the thread that have originated from the same 20 posts, just quoted over, and over, and over, and...

Of all the potential home theater DIY projects, room treatments have to be the easiest by far.
It's actually a 1500 sq ft townhouse. With my career path and my age, it won't make sense to buy a home for at least another 5 years.
watjung 06-18-09, 10:37 AM wow is a beautiful room
Ok, I won't.
I will tell you that these two enormous cylinders are my subs though :D

AHAHAHAHAHAH, holy crapper. small ass room and then 2 of the hugest subs ever. this is great and should be on attack of the show or something.
i'm not really feeling the center channel in the middle like that blocking stuff and its as big as the front right and left speakers.
what are those white things on the walls? some type of sound dampening?
Why 2 subs and why so huuuuge? i gues you must really like bass.

so what is more important:
1. Aesthetics
2. Acousitcs
antwon412 06-19-09, 11:43 AM You should get a BOSE system instead dude! You wont even be able to see the speakers, yet have a system that sounds better then others costing 5 times as much!

Both :D
That is what is so wonderful about this hobby. There is no right or wrong, it all comes down to individual preference. There are plenty of setups and equipment choices in this thread that to me are awful but that is irrelevant. It is their home not mine.

This is certainly true! My rear pair of DIY speakers sound better than expected. The LCY ribbons are next for the fronts :)

I had a 10" sub in a town house and could barely turn it up. How do you do it with those subs?

Winner: Most sarcastic/hilarious post of 2009.
antwon412 06-20-09, 12:23 AM *bows* Thank you, thank you....I'd like to thank all the little people who made this all possible. But more then anything, the credit needs to go to BOSE who was able to package a crappy speaker in a cardboard box, paint it black and convince the masses its worth $2500.
This is for you BOSE!
*thrusts award into air*
Lets all thank antwon and Bose for making this possible.
We should all go demo there products and help inform others on the wise decision they are making investing money into Bose speakers
Schloob1 06-20-09, 09:49 AM I just want to know how you still are alive and have not burst your chest open with the BASS that system should be able to produce :) My main listening room is not too big 12x12x7 with an SVS 25-31 cylinder but when I was testing it initially without bottoming out the sub at all(I know it could do more) I produced a "door shaking" 117dB reading on my HT. My wife was like "WTH was that, and NEVER do that agian" :) This was done on the THX intro of the "lightning ball" that shatters into pieces. With your set-up I can only imagine what you can get with dual 18" woofer in cylinders that are twice as big as the one that I have. I would just love to watch the depth charge scene in U-571 on that set-up in such a small room, it's the one I love to demo my HT with, get's people all the time.
sage11x 06-20-09, 08:19 PM Steve, how do you have your 7800 connected to your 52" LCD, just RF or is that a scaler I see on the upper right? Also, do I see 2 receivers in this setup? <-- ignores further questions pertaining to the 2 roman columns that pass for subwoofers in the picture...

SteveCallas 06-20-09, 11:15 PM It's clear this is the Xbox forum and not the audio forum.
A tower center channel or even a bookshelf offers less compromised performance that a horizontal center channel. It is not blocking any equipment and the very top of the speaker is a few inches below the bottom of the screen. It works beautifully.
Small ass room? I wouldn't say that. It's an averaged sized living room.
As for the subs, one could have twenty 18" drivers and the bass wouldn't have to be overpowering at all. Just as one calibrates their display, one calibrates their audio. The output in the bass range is adjusted to be in line with all other frequencies as measured at my seat - having plenty of capability just means that when the source demands it, my subs allow me to recreate what was intended. A 10" sub with a plate amp will clip, distort, bottom, compress, or just otherwise crap out when trying to recreate the bass on any modern sountrack at -20 or louder. You can't appreciate what's really encoded in movies until you step up to a bass system that is capable enough to reach down into the infrasonic range at reference levels cleanly. This requires a lot of air moving capability. Even a 12" SVS doesn't come close unfortunately.
The white things on the walls are acoustic treatments. Fiberglass batting and polyester batting against hardboard. Placed strategically in the room, these reduce the magnitude of sound reflections and allow the sound to have better imaging. If you can clap your hands in your HT space and hear an echo, even a slight one, your audio is going to be muddied.
My mains and seat create the golden triangle - it's ideal to have your seat the same distance away from your mains as the distance between your mains. My subs achieve even greater sensitivity by reaping boundary gain in the corners. By using towers for surrounds, my entire system has a very high sensitivity, is very dynamic, and is extremely low distortion.
My viewing distance from the tv is 1.5 times the screen size - this falls right between the ideal distances recommended by THX and SMPTE. It is a distance at which the detail of 1080 resolution can be appreciated over 720. The slight upward angle viewing is more natural and in line with a screen at a real theater.
Everything is "right". Home theater in a box owners - or those of you using your telivision's speakers don't get it and probably won't get it. That's ok.

The Atari 7800 and Sega Genesis use RF out into the VCR - the VCR then uses RCA out to the tv. This way I can keep both connected at the same time and use either on the fly with channel 3 or 4. Also, if I went with the RF straight to the tv, it would degrade the cable signal that would need to get to the tv.
The upper left receiver was my old one - I have no use for it and I needed a spot to fill on my racks. The Yamaha I am using is in the bottom tv stand, right side.

Steve,
I don't think it was anyone's intent to throw negativity in any way in regard to your setup. It's simply...different than most. (In this case, different = great!) Personally, I would love to have your subs! :)
In my opinion, the posts on the room's dimension are due to the gargantuan size of the subs themselves, and therefore make the room appear to be small, thus leading to those comments. As an example, Conan O'Brien (a fairly tall man that typically towers over his guests) had Kobe Bryant (a fairly average-hight NBA player) on his show the other day, and Conan appeared as merely moderate in height in comparison. It's all a matter of perspective.
As to speaker performance and distance, I completely understand and agree with your points. As far as being "right," it doesn't matter whatsoever, as NO setup is absolutely perfect. The only thing that does matter is that it is perfect or "right" for you.
Cheers.
mrlittlejeans 06-21-09, 12:38 AM How do you turn it up to reference levels in a town house though?

Love it! I had that exact same tv stand and also left the drawer out so I could use the spot- in my case a center channel! Funny to see someone had my same idea! :)
I also employed the matching audio pier. Unfortunately in my new place I have less room which required I move to a more space saving design. The stand is still in use holding up my fathers gargantuan 36" toshiba CRT.
Schloob1 06-21-09, 08:08 AM Steve, I would definitely say your room is not "small" especially compared to say my 12x12x7 but for what you have it seems small and that's what I think the concensus here is. I could easily see that in anyone's HT as opposed to just a living room :) I assume one day when you get a more permanent residence that a seperate HT is in the plans. I can only imagine what you would do then.
And at least for my room size, the bargain entry SVS does a superb job registering at the level I mentioned with no distrotion whatsoever. While I may not get the true monster stuff you speak of in the 10 Hz range I am definitely getting the bass from the soundtracks that have stuff just below the sub-20Hz range perfectly and at high dB although the wife will not let me play at reference levels, only around the 90-100 dB range typically which is plenty anyways.
Otherwise I am definitely envious as while I definitely agree you could have 20subs like you mentioned and it would not mean anything if not calibrated. Because I as well have my set-up calibrated and it makes all the difference and it just makes anyone's jaw drop whenever I demo something for them. My only wish is I can step up from my Paradigm Monitor series to their Studio line someday soon. Keep up the great work with your set-up and enjoy as I imagine you do :)

The decor in my living-room was chosen by my wife...so complements go to her. it wasn't exactly what I was looking for (I prefer modern furniture), but it did turn out better than I expected and I actually like it a lot now. Its a huge stand though...and it really dwarfs my 52 inch sammy.
We got the TV stand from the Ashley furniture store out in Houston, TX
CharlieWhiskey 06-25-09, 10:35 AM Thanks for the info. I'll check out an Ashley store to grab a closer look. I thought you had a 55" on there and I was like: "Geesh that's a big stand, Geesh that's a big stand!"
It may take up the whole wall, but hides your electronics very well. The only negative I see is the need to lift the door for the center speaker. I could live with that. I've been looking for something similar only with a lift, but they are too much coin for me.
Cheers.

Sorry for all my questions in advance... How do you like the RTi's vs the old ones? Are they 8s? Do they need alot of power? How do the surrounds perform?
