spyder696969 07-01-09, 08:57 PM How do people run two subs? Is that just a feature of reciver? or special amp?
My receiver has 2 sub outs, which I then daisy-chain along to the 3 other powered ones that go under the bed, but I'd bet that most here have dedicated amps.
ddrheretic 07-01-09, 09:16 PM How do people run two subs? Is that just a feature of reciver? or special amp?
I use a y splitter.
On an off topic note I just ran my shin into the corner of my guest bedroom bed frame whilst horsing around with my cat. Hopefully it's the most painful thing that happens to me this month.
formulanerd 07-01-09, 11:54 PM How do people run two subs? Is that just a feature of reciver? or special amp?
most use a Y splitter.... my receiver (yamaha) happens to have two ouputs though.
Scott Simonian 07-02-09, 12:44 PM My two 18's are running off from the same amp (bridged) so I just hook em up to the same speaker posts on the amp. With two more 18's coming soon...I'll prolly have to add a Y-splitter too. :p
DaGamePimp 07-02-09, 04:55 PM How do people run two subs? Is that just a feature of reciver? or special amp?
In theory you can run as many subs off a single pre-out as you would like (daisy-chain), although I imagine there would come a point a where signal loss would become an issue. I have utilized 4 powered subs off a single pre-out with no issues.

However, if I must come down to your "competition" level, then here is a comparable game/story/image:

mystik610 07-03-09, 01:26 PM Sorry for all my questions in advance... How do you like the RTi's vs the old ones? Are they 8s? Do they need alot of power? How do the surrounds perform?
I went from the R50's to the TSi300's to the RTi8's, and am finally satisfied with the RTi8's. Also went from a HTiB center to a CS10 and a CSi3. I'm finally satisfied with the RTi line and won't be upgrading anything for a long while. They're extremely detailed and do a really good job of imaging.....I finally have a system where the speakers 'disappear'. They can get a little bright at times, however, and I'd recommend getting a good, detailed sub. I recently added a HSU STF-2, and now everything seems perfectly balanced.
The speakers are pretty sensitive (90 db sensitivity) and don't need a whole lot of power. Any half decent receiver should be able to power them. I did bi-amp the RTi8's, but only so the tweeters and woofers can be driven independently.
As for the surrounds, I'm using the FXi3's, set as dipoles. Some people prefer dipoles, while others hate them. I happen to like the sense of spaciousness and ambiance they create. They make the room sound much larger than it really is. With dipoles you do lose some of the directionality of the surrounds though. If dipoles aren't your thing, you can always hunt for a pair of RTi4's instead.

They do put out some heat, it's just that they are fan-vented in the back, no vents on top of the unit.
If you have an enclosed rack, you'll need to deal with the heat output. My idiot brother just had to relocate his because he had it stacked with his AVR without sufficient ventilation and it was locking up on him.

I understand it's off topic, but i've got a quick question.
I notice you've got and ir repeater/emitter system. What are you using and how expensive if you don't mind me asking? I've got an onkyo i'm needing to get a signal to somehow and can't find a reasonable ir system for just one component. Kinda sux. Any help would be appreciated.

idiot?!?!? yer mama
I had mine on the shelf above my Onyko AVR. It was getting roasted. it got to the point that everyday, arounf 4 in the afternoon, it would give me an error message saying operating temp had exceeded 145 degrees. After a week of that, i quickly relocated it to the other side of my cabinet.
no problems now.
*edit* theres no way i would have my 360 directly on top of my 722. both of those get extremly warm. with the known heat issues of the 360, its only a matter of time before it red rings. I have my dvr in an open shelf, under my xbox, with about 6-7 inches of clearance between the 2, and it still has hot air around it.

They are great. I don't have an amp for them but they do well enough being powered by just the Onkyo 606 for my liking. I would highly recommend them.
For an update on my set-up that I am mostly playing COD:MW 2 on lately, I got an Epson 8100 and an Elite EZFrame 106" CineWhite screen. Bliss. :D

Nice upgrade I have a 50" Pio from 2007 the 5070 and the picture on it still wows me everyday. The color is so accurate and deep. I recommend removing the speaker on the bottom, it will look a lot sexier. yes, flat screens can look sexy, especially if it is a Pioneer Plasma.

wojcikc3 12-11-09, 06:13 PM That looks kool. What do you do put the flat screen on the floor when you watch TV? How come you didn't get a motorized screen?
Yes, I just move the TV when I use the pj. I had two choices:
1. Mount the TV to the wall and get a pull down screen.
2. Get a fixed frame screen and move the TV when not in use.
If I was going to spend a couple hundred dollars on a screen I wanted it to last more than a year or two. From what I've read about most pull down and electric screens they lose tension and waves start to become visible. I think I made the right choice.
The ceiling in the room is also vaulted at about 13 feet...
I currently rent in a house and will eventually have a dedicated room and just put the TV in a bedroom probably.

Oh really, is that right? I wanted to buy a motorized screen, now I am going to have to ask around and find out if what you said is true. But I do not really have any choice in the matter, since I do not have a dedicated room and I want to keep my flat screen on wall for normal viewing.
lordcloud 12-13-09, 01:09 PM Here's my humble media room. The Wii is out in the living room hooked up to my Panny 42" plasma.
The wife didn't buy into surround sound / HD / etc, so it's been done on a shoestring budget. I think it's around $800 minus the 360. Still, I've been really happy with the results.
My wife wanted the room setup so that it looked "normal" if you passed by in the hall, which actually works given the layout of the room.

Samsung 240hz 52" B750 w/"bias lighting" aka cheapo rope light from Wal-mart that actually works wonders. The bottom of the rope light looks detached from the TV because I need to constantly unhook it (not from the outlet, but from a thing right next to the ps3) when I'm not using it. There's no switch, no thanks to the genius who made it.
Pioneer HTIB (I actually love it, and the remote directly controls the 360!)
Original PS3 60gb behind the TV on the left (that black square looking thing)
Wii under the TV on the right (never ever gets used)
P.O.S 5 year old desktop on TOP of the subwoofer <_<
HD DVR - far right dresser
360 Elite - far right dresser
Slim PS3 120gb - far right dresser
As you can see, this is all in my bedroom as I TRIED to sell my 67" LED DLP to get a 65" Plasma for the living room, but it got 'stolen'. So with no TV and not much cash, I moved everything (sans TV stand) to my room and went for the 52" 240hz LCD. I sit about 5-7 feet from it. I got too used to my 67" that 52" is too small if I sit any further than 7 feet. ;)
I miss my old living room setup. It actually looked right. Not ghetto rigged like this. An HDTV on a freaking dresser. LOL
I SERIOUSLY have no space to put these things anywhere else.

I believe in his other thread on one of the other sub-forums he bought the lamps from Target. It appears you can't buy anything online from the Target Australia site, at least not from here in the states. Maybe someone else knows where you can get these lights???

zero_zep 04-15-10, 02:51 PM Hey I just have a question about my set up and I'm asking here cause I've seeing a few people that are doing it. I wanted to add some back light on a 47' inch LCD but of course I want to do it the cheap way with rope light. What size would be good enough? 6 or 12 feet? I realize 6 isnt big enough but i was thinking since the rope light doesnt have light control so I thought I could get a smaller light d to a small cricle behide the tv so it wont be as bright. Suggestions?

I did I think 8 feet. It isn't too much but reaches all the way around the screen so you get an even distribution of light. If I were able to take a pic I'd show you but suffice it to say it's a pretty cool effect.

switch42 07-15-10, 07:30 PM How did you make the rope light stick to the tv?
I used these (http://www.ledlightingkit.com/ledstripkitremote.html). They are light so double sided tape works really well.

nice. not to be mean, but is that an IKEA tv stand? im trying to upgrade my 1980's stereo rack that doesnt quite look like a 2010 av rack.
Shin CZ 09-15-10, 11:47 PM Why would that be mean? I wish Ikea were closer. I'd buy all my furniture there.
It's a stand I bought at Best Buy. In fact, I did something ghetto, and sawed off the top platform, because I bought it when I had my 67" Samung DLP. The stand was too high for the TV, and I had to tilt the TV so I can get a proper viewing angle. I no longer have that DLP, so now people can see where I sawed off the top part (you can see the brown corners in the pics).

lol My ghetto setup with the Xbox connected to my computer monitor using a Monoprice VGA cable. I have to get the real deal cable next week because this one is pretty ghosty.
The black controller goes to my PC, btw.

BIGJOHNB20 01-26-11, 02:58 PM Derko, interesting to see your progression over the years. I wish I had pics of how my setup has changed over time. Unfortunately, the changes haven't been too drastic....
Anyway, it looks like you had the same Onkyo HTIB model that I have been rocking for quite some time in a couple of your pics. It looks like in one you had the whole setup, speakers and all, then in another you still had the reciever, but had upgraded the speakers.
Can you comment on how the new speakers performed with the original reciever. Also, what speakers did you have with that set up. I have been considering upgrading the speakers with my system for a while now, but keeping the reciever for a little while longer. Figure I can get some nice speakers now and then use those with a newer reciever later on if I ever finish off my basement.
I honestly don't remember... I went through like 4 receivers after that one and ended up with an Onkyo 606 for majority of the time and last week just bought NR-1008. So I'm not sure. If anything, I know that I changed out receivers because they've broken...
As far as the speakers. They were JBL venue series. I bought them from Best Buy while they were on sale.
Renagade 01-26-11, 03:10 PM I've been looking for a TV stand like that. Colors perfect!
mbyrnes 01-27-11, 12:40 PM Derko I love the old couch you had. It is what I call "ugly cool". I had a similar looking couch a few years ago and loved it. Comfortable, but not something a woman with any taste would even sit on.
You made it far with your gear in a short period of time. This hobby can suck the life out of your bank account. I bet within a year or so you buy another HDTV to "upgrade", and maybe even add an amp. You will find things to buy. Getting it past the woman is the hard part. Good luck!
spyder696969 01-27-11, 07:17 PM ... Getting it past the woman is the hard part...
Man, I feel for you guys that have to "get it past your woman." :(
Every year around tax refund season, the wifey asks me, "Isn't it time to upgrade (insert random A/V equipment)?" Seems like I'm always the one holding back a bit, waiting for a good sale or doing some research. :)
I'll never understand the excuse of "wifey won't let me." It's not like women don't watch/play/enjoy what we buy...and yet, we don't wear their 5,000 pairs of overpriced shoes! (Well, some of us don't anyway. ;))

Funny thing is wife my pulled the trigger on the last two HDTVs "We" bought. It was her idea and prices came way down. Trying to explain why I want $3000 for L/R speakers is a whole different story. I am one of the lucky ones where she basically just lets me do what I want, as long as it doesn't require selling her stuff :p. She has every right to question a purchase when you can buy something that basically does the same thing for a hell of a lot less. 30 minutes in the HT store demoing speakers and she gets the idea (and she has had her lifetime fill).
Talking about HT gear with my wife is like her talking about a pair of boots or jacket that she wants. She gets this look in her eye like she is imagining she is anywhere but talking about HT gear with me. She doesn't care. Just like I don't care about clothing she wants. I would rather talk about anything else, but I do remember the make and model # so if she hasn't picked it up, I have a gift idea.
Some people have less disposable income than others and making a purchase is not easy. $2000 to one person maybe a drop in the bucket, but to another it is a tremendous amount of money. Since this hobby isn't exactly cheap, getting into high end gear can be a long process financially. People have different priorities in life. I just happen to put it very high on my list of importance (as I imagine most on AVS do).
As to your point of "Wifey won't let me", I agree. Years ago when I first lived with my wife (girlfriend then), she would try to pull that crap about money. I would just sit there and point out all of the money she wastes. Expensive Shampoo and Conditioner, Haircuts, her wardrobe, and an amazing ability to just waste money on really dumb things. I then asked her to find an equal amount of money per month that I spend on myself. It wasn't even close :D. she backed off and we are both happier understanding what makes each other happy. Hopefully people can get to know their wife well and really try to make her happy. She will return the favor.

I'm curious about the "living room setup." Doesn't that tile cause all sorts of havok for sound? Semms like there's not much in the way of environmental absorbtion in that particular area to diminish the reverb that would be bouncing off of the floor/walls.
Also, what's up with the pulldown screen to the left in the bedroom? Again, just curious, not complaining. You've avtually done a good job of cramming so much into such a small space...although I'm not able to understand the need for two different setups in the bedroom.

Evening,
For me, the living room sound fine. You can easily distinguish where the sound is coming from. I'm sure it will sound better w/rug and something to absorb the sounds off the wall. As for the bedroom. I always had the projector with the ps3/360 connected. However, the 3rd xbox I won a kinect/360 bundle in a local contest and the PS3 belonged to a friend that didn't like PSN. He wanted to trade it in to gamestop but they only offered 100. I gave him 150 for the ps3 slim (250gb).
Now lets talk about why 3 systems.....Initially, I used the PS3 in the living room for bluray and gaming. However, gaming on the TV w/out game mode on and the 120hz on there was too much lag. So, I bought the bluray player for the living room so I would not have to always change to game mode and adjust the 120hz on the tv everytime I watched a movie/played games. The kinect, I had to place it in the living room. So my original two 360's are played as follows (along w/the 2 PS3's in the room). The projector is used only on the weekend when I know I will likely be on for more than two hrs. When I get home from work and just want to unwind for a few games, I play on the tv in the bedroom as I don't want to turn on and off the bulb so frequently of the projector. I would love to play more often in the living room. But with the new surround system, the family is ALWAYS on it. To be honest, I only touch the TV in the living room when we're all going to watch a movie or when we play kinect.
As for the projector and the screen. It' nothing more than a white wall that I placed a rod on the top and ran a black cloth on the top and sides. Unfortunately , the curtain was not long enough to be drapped evenly on both side(up and down). When the lights are off and game/movie is on you do not see that the the sides are not one symmetrical piece. It's not in the viewing screen at all and I placed the curtain so you can't see that I was not able to paint the corners very nice. LOL
you guys are too neat and tidy :p

Actually, for us, the tv is perfect where it's at. However, I have a 136" screen that I sit appx 6ft away. Close enough for you? LOL. I played around a lot with the tv, the problem is from the love seat, if we place the tv any closer the picture quality is no good from the side.
Thanks guys for looking @ my vid
Shin CZ 02-01-11, 12:27 PM I can understand that. I have very limited space in my apartment, mostly due to the furniture I just got last week. It's too big and there is NO possible way to make it look right with the TV in the equation, so it's all a bit tight... the only solution is to move the TV setup on a wall that would be VERY far from the seating distance... which is a no go for me.

SouthFLDan 02-13-11, 06:03 PM Where's the "overkill?" I certainly don't see it.
Overkill for my room I mean. It's a small 12x12 room and the windows/walls feel as if they will fall when I hit medium level. Overkill or not, I love it.

How right you were my friend! But understimated it by too many months. :p
You guys might remember my post on the previous page of my set up over the years, well now this is my set up. Hopefully this forum is still around a few years from now, so I can do another update.
A 54" Panasonic VT25, pre broken in and calibrated.
What do you guys think?
The stuffed animals just put that nice touch that shows that I'm married.
(P.S. That's not dust on the first pic, it's some artifacts from resizing.)
I really like your setup and the coffee table with glass top with pictures underneath is similar to what I have also. Got a coffee table from Ikea with glass top but no pictures yet since it's already covered with a laptop, ipad, remotes, magazines =(
Oh and when I saw the dust artifact I was like ok cool I don't feel so bad now, lol! I thought I was the only one with dust problems :p

Everyone human being on the Earth has dust problems.

Yes, I know but his and mine are the same since we both have glass top entertainment center and it shows up like nobody's business. This new old house that I moved into though is worst than anything I have encountered. My folks house is pretty clean and so are my friends houses. It's like a blanket of dust everywhere and I clean every week.
Which reminds me, I was suppose to place an order for one of them air filter machines.

I also have an old home (around 122yrs old). The dust is terrible so I feel your pain. I've been told that the older windows are a big source of the dust. Which seems to be true as rooms that I have gutted and redone with drywall/insulation/vaporbarrier I still get the dust covering. I haven't started replacing windows yet as there are around 30 off them. :o

Sounds like a good idea. A good air purifier might help a lot. I am thinking about getting one just to have once since I live in NYC.

It's not a mansion or anything it's just a victorian style house so every room has a crap load of windows.

We run 4 large tower air purifiers in our house and it makes a substantial difference with dust, when they are off much of the house is dusty within a couple of days but when they are on it takes a couple of weeks before we notice any real build up. Just be sure to get the permanent HEPA type so you can clean the filter versus having to replace it frequently, we clean our filters about 4 times a year (so every 3 months) and I am always amazed at how much build up there is on the filter. Ours also have the UV to kill bacteria, not sure how much that really helps but we get sick less often and the house smells fresher/cleaner over-all.

Yea... we actually have a cat too and it's such a huge hassle. The air filters sound like a great idea... I think the noise they make would be way too noticeable to me though. I hate hearing humming from the laptop when it's on! :o

tattootearz 04-28-11, 07:15 PM Still working on it... but I wanted to share this so far...

I went with an overhead floating shelf design that I actually made myself using (3) Pieces of Press board that were pre-laminated.
NOTES RE. CLOSENESS OF THE RECEIVER TO THE PJ....
Ive run several test and heat doesnt seem to be an issue... Both get warm but just as warm as they did when they were @ further proximity.
Also, a picture of the new 110" Wall-Screen I designed and painted with Behr Silverscreen...

Like I said, Im still working on my new theater room design so final pics wont be up for awhile... however, I dont want to see ANY wires @ all. Wire management is always the most important thing for me.
MikeAlletto 05-04-11, 04:53 PM I know this question is going to have a million answers, but I'd like to start looking for an LCD TV to fit in a smallish office that I'd like to move my 360 up to. Probably looking at 37", 42" might be a little too big, but if the price isn't too bad then I could live with it. A lot of the posts in this thread don't mention what model tv everyone is using. Also I'm not interested in large screen (got a 61" downstairs but need to someday soon move the xbox upstairs to the office. Any suggestions?
mbyrnes 05-04-11, 09:23 PM Sharp, Panasonic, Toshiba are usually safe bets for gaming HDTVs. They usually have very little input lag across the board. If you find a model you can try to google it with input lag and someone may have tested it. Panasonic would be limited to 37" or smaller for an LCD. Their plasmas are usually very good with input lag as well and are 42" and larger.
Don't go off of what people believe their input lag to be. People do test these things with a scientific method and results can vary widely. I have seen some people say their model has no input lag and multiple tests conducted say they are wrong.
I think there was a thread on AVS somewhere that had people reporting their results. I have no idea where, but the search function should help you find it. Good luck!

ogbuehi 06-06-11, 05:07 AM I'm unitiated. please explain how you did this black magic **edit - there's an HDMI In?
No black magic. My laptop has HDMI in. I bought because there are a lot of times where I'm on the road. Since I can't always rely on being able to hook up to the hotel tv or the hotel still has old CRT's, I'll always have my portable "HDTV". Having this laptop has paid off so many times.
mikeloxlong 06-06-11, 09:07 AM hmm, gotta look into that for the future...
What is that laptop? HDMI in on a laptop is very rare.
ogbuehi 06-09-11, 04:51 PM What is that laptop? HDMI in on a laptop is very rare.
I specifically requested it. I'm not sure why they can't make the HDMI output act as an input by a soft or hard switch, but it works. And with windows 7, I can make my laptop act as a wifi hotspot. So now I can take the hotel internet to the laptop and connect my 360 wirelessly to my laptop's hotspot. This laptop has really allowed me to maintain my gaming habits while on the road.

I have a 42" Vizio LCD VO420E in my den. Perfect size for a 12x12 room. Also have a Yamaha soundbar with subwoofer and added LED backlights for behind the tv.
