How far behind the screen is your center channel? I can not find a stand to fit my center channel on and I am going to either mount it on a shelf behind the tv or use the Omni unit on the tv.

like 13 inches

Shok--nice little setup. I wish I wouldn't have traded all my 360 games along the way. I think I've just about owned every 360 game out there, but have constantly traded them. I have a problem.

Nice tv--same as mine. Where did you get that stand? I'm liking it.

BTW--I'm curious how the television looks paired with the HD DVD add-on. Is it better than the 360 DVD through VGA? Is it worth it to upgrade to HD DVD, in terms of it looking brilliant on the tv or not. Since we own the same tv all the info, praise, concerns about the player would be appreciated. Thanks

I would take the 360 off the cable box too..It is sitting right on top of the air holes for the cable box, plus it is not getting much ventilation either.

Also, a general Xbox 360 question:

How do you tell how many hours you've played a specific game? If you played thru the campaign more than once, does it count that time also? Does it count the time that you died and restarted any given level?

Thanks for the compliments on the setup. I used to have more games, but little by little I been trading the ones that I don't play that often for the new ones.

Regarding the stand, I got it from Best Buy, here is the link :

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=7293298&st=bush&lp=12&type=product&cp=1&id=1118841019561

I've never used the 360 as a DVD player. Before the HD DVD add-on, I used to have a Sony up scaling DVD player, but the HD DVD at 720p blows away the Sony player. It's a big difference from the standard resolution DVDs. Right now I have the 360 connected through component, I didn't have a good experience when I bought the VGA cables, by some reason the TV wouldn't display the whole image, it had black bars around it and when I used the zoom feature, there was too much overscan, so I decided to return the VGA cables and went back to component.

Do you have it connected through VGA ? Any tips in making it fit the whole screen without overscan ?

I can't tell if you have the 360 on top of a Motorola 6412, but it kinda looks like it. If so, you need to remove it immediately. That 6412 is the only thing that I know that runs hotter than the 360 and it needs every inch of ventilation it can get and putting a 360 on top of it is asking for trouble with both components.

Even if it isn't a 6412, I wouldn't put my 360 on top of anything that constantly runs.

It's an option with most plasma TVs. You can pause the picture.

Shok--I've used both the component cables and VGA. On the tv, switching from the component to the VGA cable was so profound! The colors are much more vibrant and there's much more 'pop' with the VGA cables. I don't have overscan issues--I used selected (I think) the Wide 1 option on the Sony.

Watching dvds through component on the 360 looked like complete and utter crap, BUT when I switched to the VGA it looked like HD to me! It looked upconverted and it's amazing.

I'm glad to hear that the HD DVD player looks awesome. I think I'm going to pick one up here shortly, especially now that I know it's worth it with that television.

Here is the differnce.
I have done a comparison with 360 on component and vga.
720p for component, 1280x768 for vga. In my eyes VGA eats it. How ever this could be the cable. I am looking at getting a monster component cable for it and i will do another comparison then.

I've only got a 32" LCD but have been thinking of upgrading I dont want anything less than 50" and have considered keeping the 32" for watching television and getting a projector for games/movies...Any recommendations in terms of projectors that have a good bulb life...Dishing out a wad of cash and then putting out a few hundred bucks every year or so for a bulb is the main drawback for me.

Thanks , we enjoy having both displays ;) .

Projector lamp life is pretty dang good IMO , but it all comes down to how much you use it really . The average person would only be needing a lamp every 3-4 years and usually well within that time frame the upgrade bug hits and the original lamp never gets used up anyway (I am on my 6th projector in 6 years) ;) . Now if you are the type that would be using it for many hours each day then you could go through a lamp in a year or so , it would take some serious use however since most lamps currently are rated for 3000 hours (or more if you use low lamp mode) . For example I have had my current HC3000 for about 8 months and I only have about 600 hours on the lamp which averages out to about 2.5 hours per day (but it does not get used every day , on average probably only once or twice per week) .

If you are considering something under $1K then look into the Mitsubishi HD1000 , I have not seen one as of yet but they are getting excellent reviews and the price cannot be beat .

Cool thanks for the heads up and did a quick search and it got some pretty good reviews and does 720p which should look fantastic..

How much space is needed between the projector and the screen????

I know you said you havent seen it but does using the low mode on the lamp pretty much extend the life of it more than the approximate 3000 hours? Reason I ask is that my LCD is set to Dark with middle/high looking to bright and wondered if it was the same concept.

Which generally gives a sharper picture for XBOX360....LCD or Plasma?

I have a 2-week old Samsung 46" 1080p LCD that I am thinking of exchanging for plasma. I like the LCD, but blacks aren't very deep and I am also having some cloudy backlight issues.

Just curious if a plasma would be as sharp and clear as the LCD...but with more color? Or is LCD as good as it gets with sharpness?

I've seen my buddy's Xbox 360 hooked up to an Aquos LCD HDTV and my Xbox 360 hooked up to my Samsung Plasma HDTV and I can honestly say that 360 games look MUCH better on the the plasma. 10,000:1 contrast ratio, amazing blacks + bright, vibrant colors. Very good news...thanks. I just hope there's no burn-in issues...and that 1080p Blu-Ray looks good on a non-1080p display. But yeah, you get much better colors and blacks with plasma...I just wasn't sure the graphics and text were as razor sharp as the LCD....that is one area I feel the LCD excels very well.

You know, I heard those same stories and all I can say is either I'm really lucky or really smart. I had an xbox, ps2 and now I own a 360. No burn in.

Also, my Tosh (and I believe Pannys as well) comes with a white-out program you can run to remove any image retention.

Good luck with your decision.

I've tested both VGA and component on my other TV (Samsung 32" LCD) and VGA looks 100x better (to me at least) so I didn't even bother with component on the Westy. VGA to my eye just looks sharper. Colors are great.

I think it has to do more with my camera being 7.1 megapixels & thus making the lower pixel 720p display look uglier?
Like I said I can see the pixels in the 720p pics while I can't on the 1080p one.

The difference is not that big when I eyeballed them side by side.

My guess is the major difference is due less to resolution and more to do with the quality of the displays , the JVC is superior to the Vizio in every way (regardless of resolution) .

No, 1080p doesn't increase details in dark areas, it doesn't increase brightness, etc. etc. what you are seeing is the difference between the displays, the quality of the JVC to show more detail in shadow area, etc. 1080p doesn't help in these areas.

Hey DVD,

I have the Sammy 50" plasma, HPs-5053, and I can say, first hand that the 360 looks mind numbingly good.

3 things to watch out for, I have notice image retention on the screen, even after the initial 100 hour break in, but the best way around it is to not play for really long strecthes of time for the first few hundred hours, and use the pixel shift feature. Also, use the white wash screen.

I found that via VGA, the 360 colors looked washed out. I have a 42 inch HP in the bedroom (from last year) and colors look better on it than on the Samsung via VGA. From what I've read, the latest update seems to have fixed it but I have not had a chance to test it out.

The great thing about VGA is that you get no overscan, so you get the full top and bottom of the 360 picture, and it is indeed slightly sharper due to the higher resolution you can get.

Also, make sure you don't get a buzzing unit. Some people have reported buzzing from these plasmas. A low buzz in the upper left hand corner is normal, but if you can hear it from across your room or need to turn up the volume to drown it out, send it back.

I have a few screen shots of what my plasma looks like (via component cables) in page 40 and 41 of this thread. Take a look.

The problem isnt that the vga cables are washed out. The vga shows a true representation of what SHOULD be going on. The problem is, you are used to having your colors oversaturated, with the setting too high.

The vga connection is showing it as it was meant to be....if you want it otherwise, stick to component.

Sorry :(

Yo may be correct. Weird thing is though that my HP Plasma looks like an in between setting of both of these. Not too much color, and not so washed out.

I actually have the color turned down to about 48 in Game Mode on the Samsung, because it was a little too much.

I think it also depends on the game. If you look at the 2 below shots of Ultimate alliance, they look pretty close.

Hey akumaxv, no worries. For my tv, I had originally used the settings for my cable box for the 360, which has the color set around 30. When I first plugged in the VGA cable I was amazed at the color difference, which for me, was shocking!

One of the differences I see, is looking at the two Ultimate alliance shots, is look at the mini-map. Look how (to me) the green arrow looks a little "fuzzy" using component cables, while it doesnt for the VGA image. Again....these are the things that I picked up.

Here are a few shots of my setup. I had posted some earlier, but I had just bought the TV so it was not mounted or anything run in the wall till a few weeks ago. I also recently purchased the Onkyo HT-S907 system. Very nice sounding speakers, if a little large.

Don't mind the plaster on the wall. I drilled some extra holes to make sure I could run the speaker wire through and have not had a chance to sand and paint it. I just put them up this weekend.

I'm in an apartment, so I can't have the joygasmic setups some of you guys have, but for now, this will do:

I think the fuzziness is also due the amount of color in component and the way the camera was taking the picture. I re-took some of them several times because they looked so fuzzy.

VGA is far sharper though. I just couldn't get use to the loss in color, that I saw anyway. Can't go wrong with either one though. Wish they made plasmas with 2 VGA ports.

Cedric,

Did you get into the service menu for you Sammy plasma to adjust the color on the VGA?

How? I would love to do that for my 5053, as the color looks REALLY washed out on it in VGA, but the resolution is so damn sexy!

That doesn't look like a difference between VGA and Component by a difference between PS3 and 360. My VGA looks like the one on the right but wit a tad bit less color but great color at that.

I'll post some pictures of the demo thats online.

Thanks for the compliments! Glad you guys like it.
:)

It's an apartment, but I bought it, a condo, so it's ok that I run the wires in the wall. I just need to get the PVC runner to cover the ceiling mounted speakers. There was some metal stud or something that wouldn't let me put a hole in the wall to run the wires as high as I would have liked.

For the TV moount, it was the tiliting Omnimount available at Circuit City. Super easy to install if you find the studs in your room and it comes with everything you need, from the wall screws to the screws for the back of your TV. It moves from side to side, which is great since I have what's called an open floor plan. Basically, it's a U shape with the kitchen in the middle. I have my dinning room on one side which you can kind of see and my desk/office on the other so the TV is visible from all sides.

It's my first place that I actually own, so I can't wait to get a house so I can do a setup like some of you guys have.

If you're asking how I ran the cables in the wall, it was pretty easy, as they are hollow.

And the VGA is on the left, component is on the right in both screen shots., and it's definately the 360 only in those shots. I don't have a PS3 (YET).

I think the huge difference is only so apparent on the Samsung plasmas. My HP plasma (last years model with the Panny glass) is an in between of both.

Also, it seems my camera tends to over saturate the colors when I take pics of the component imput as it doesn't look that fuzzy in person.

There is still a big difference betwee the two inputs, on the Samsung plasma though,

I found the colors via VGA to be too unsaturated aswell so I manually tweaked it untill it resembled the component saturation. Accurate colors be damned, I want perty colors =P

I couldn't find a setting to take a decent pic of my TV, but it's a Pioneer 60" Plasma. I'm thinking about upgrading (If you want to call it that) to a 1080p TV, but I'm not sure if I'm going to pull the trigger on that. I've got a PS3, but honestly in the reviews I've read, 1080p just isn't that big of a differance. That 60" sony SXRD looks pretty sweet though... running out of time before Christmas. Need to find one in store so I can have them toss a 1080p vid on it and see if it's any better than 1080i/720p.

Uptown193
12-14-06, 12:32 PM
Yes there is , but First your photos have to be loaded onto a web server,
many use a photo hosting service like webshots, picture trail, photo bucket...etc.
But some of them wont allow remote "hot" linking to other web sites because it can use a lot of bandwidth.

Then you link to the photo's URL on the interweb using image tags (UBB Code)
code for image below:

{img}url from photo goes here{/img} no spaces though and must use "[ ]" style brackets

You cannot simply link to photos on your hardrive
.....unless its a dedicated web server ;)

I load my pics to my personal space via FTP to my IP (internet providers) server
Its free web storage most people with broadband are not even aware of. Check with your service provider to see if you have any webspace.
I think I have access to 100 megs and its included with my high speed cable/internet bundle through my local provider.

Did you know you can lower your Panel on its stand after removing the speaker bar?
There are two height settings on the stand mount so your wires wont be so visible.

Your money would be better spent on a "real" digital camera than a P$3
Turn down the lights and kill the flash to minimize reflections, set the camera on a book or something
(not directly on your glass "reflective" table), if you dont have a tri-pod.
Set the timer so tripping the shutter doesnt bump the frame out of focus.

You "may" have a good looking set up,
but one would never know it based on the low quality camera phone images.

I may come across as an arogant a$$,
but really I'm just trying to help you out

lol, na i know you playin around, its kool. But yea, i didnt know that there were two settings on the stand that it came with. thanks for that 411. Hey Uptown

I picked up my PS3 today
Funny thing, it was a total fluke

I stopped in at Best Buy before heading to work first thing this morning
... just to browse the HD DVD selection (for my XBOX add-on)

There were about 30 people lined up (store was not open yet) 8:55
I asked what the big deal was, some were there for a new batch of Wii systems
...but also listed on the notice on the door was 20 available PS3 60g units

I pariently waited to get in, asked them when it was my turn if they had any left
...I was handed a ticket for #19 (out of 20)

I need to shoot a couple pics of Resistance Fall of Man and BlackHawk Down tomorrow,
for now here's a couple quick shots from the Ultra Violet Blu Ray

Forgot to shut that stupid auto-flash off again

From your experience so far, which do you think has better PQ the PS3 Blu-ray or the 360 HD-DVD player?

Damn man, you lucky dog you. I wouldnt believe you if you didnt post those pics on there. Congrats. I guess they shipped the next bunch out, im still patiently waiting. Expensive day for you i guess, huh?. well which one do you like better BRD or HD DVD. I was in best buy today and they had a Sony BRD hooked up and I was not to crazy about the PQ. I thought HD DVD was better and less grainer. Whats you take on this?

It's a Pioneer PDP-5070HD 50" Plasma
Only a 1365x768 but really shines when you feed it Pure HD @ 1080i

You kno PioManiac...I've been lurking around for the last 6 months debating on which display to get and I have been pretty much dead set on the Panny plasma but everytime I see your pictures  ...man I just hope the Panny can come close to the pq of the 5070. If the price difference wasnt so muchI would def. get the pio. Enough of that though..getting a little off topic. I just want you to post more pics. :p

If I didn't have this Sammy (HLS 5088) I would have looked for that Pio. Sexy man. Sammy's sexy too though :D

Hey how can I take some good pictures. My skills are thrash and I have a 5 MB camera but always get blurry pictures and aren't sharp as the Pio or other plasmas. Actually I saw some pictures of my own set and mine are no where as good. What the hell am I doing wrong. I see these pictures and mine look amazing in person but coul never replicate it. :(

I don't have a HTPC. I wish but no money. I use a laptop to do my work and its never connected to my Sammy. I use the extender sometimes but rarely. My Sammy HLS lets me turn off overscan in the service menu and it stays off permanently. Therefore I get all 1920 x 1080 lines of resolution progressive through the VGA and every other connection. Its great not to miss things.

EDIT: I just realized what you were referring to, that was the extender in that picture. And I was using component at the time. But like I said overscan was turned off in the service menu.

You can get all your information here. I have the Sammy HL-S5088W that accepts 1080p over all inputs and allows you to turn off overscan and its a global setting for all inputs no matter your source. Here is the owners thread:

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=665890

EDIT: Here is everything you need to know about my set:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=697413
- scroll down a little bit to the HTPC link

Your HTPC will be fine with no overscan once you turn it off. The 87 model allows you to turn it off but resets and turns it back on once you turn your tv off. Kind of annoying.

Huge picture files are annoying.... just post 640x480. That resolution can show off a system well without making the thread oversized for certain people's browsers and avoids slowing down the loading process.

looks like he has his color temp set to cool and I don't think he is using vga since the vga output does not fill the entire screen. I would suggest you up the brightness a bit and increase the picture as well. Looks like you are using the black corrector too which tends to add a black crush.

I got a Pioneer 5070HD and no burn-in or retention whatsoever. Awesome colors and PQ and I play on Dynamic mode which is the the higest level more or less on this set and never have burn-in. Even during the breakin procedure for the first 200 viewing hours i was in dynamic mode and playin all types of games with a steady image on the screen and nothing. I think that the Burn-in mumbojumbo does not exsist with these new generation plasmas, unless you leave an image on your screen for like 20hours in dynamic mode or unless you buy a very cheap (no name, bb type) plasma. Im very happy with the Pio and HD viewing is awesome and realistic. Enough said. Good luck to all and to all a happy holiday.

P.S. If any of you guys got burnin on your screen your doing something wrong or you were being cheap and you got a wack plasma. Next time save your money and get your money worth. (Pio and Panny is the way to go).

LOVE my 50" panny plasma, 50U series. No current problems with anything on my display. During the break-in period I noticed slight image retention on the screen when I turned it off if the room was dark. This would usually dissipate in 1-5 minutes and without any residual effects during the next power on.

I have had this TV for almost 1 year now without any problems. Here's another image for fun cuz I just learned how to include pics in my posts!

My dude, please do a rewire, the set up looks nice but it would look sexier if you would just take 2 hours and rewire your setup, you feel me. Give it a try. You spent all that money on your equipment, now show it off the way it meant to be shown. Just my opinion.

Everyone always says this about people's setups, but I don't get it. If you have a stand where you can see through it, there's not much you can do? I mean, are you saying just tie all the wires together? Would that help?

LOL! If you only knew me you'd laugh at my laziness!

I agree my setup could benefit from refining the wires...believe me I'd like nothing better than to solder the speaker wires to banana plugs and plug them into my receiver instead of the way I have them setup in addition to doing a better job hiding wires.

But I'm terrible at follow through. Maybe I can get my act together for the new year.

When I get home I'll post a picture of how fracked up the wiring situation is behind the TV. (oh and yes, I said frack cuz i'm a BSG fan  )

Iris - 1
Picture - 100
Brightness - 50
color - 31
Hue - 5
Color Temp - natural
Sharpness - 20
Noise reduction - 0ff
