LOL! If you only knew me you'd laugh at my laziness!

I agree my setup could benefit from refining the wires...believe me I'd like nothing better than to solder the speaker wires to banana plugs and plug them into my receiver instead of the way I have them setup in addition to doing a better job hiding wires.

But I'm terrible at follow through. Maybe I can get my act together for the new year.

When I get home I'll post a picture of how fracked up the wiring situation is behind the TV. (oh and yes, I said frack cuz i'm a BSG fan  )

Dude, I'm right there with you...too lazy to clean it up!

Everyone always says this about people's setups, but I don't get it. If you have a stand where you can see through it, there's not much you can do? I mean, are you saying just tie all the wires together? Would that help?

MY MAN THERES A LOT A PERSON CAN DO IF YOU JUST TAKE THE TIME TO DO IT, I GOT A MORE OR LESS SEE THROUGH STAND AND I SAT BEHIND THE STAND FOR LIKE 2 HOURS AND FOLDED ALL THE WIRES AND TIDE THE WIRES TOGETHER AND NOW THERE NOT ALL OVER THE PLACE. SO YEA, SOME WELL SPENT TIME ORGANIZING THE WIRES WOULD HELP A TREMENDOUS AMOUNT AND YOU OR HIS SET UP WOULD LOOK 50% BETTER. I KNOW MINE DID AFTER I DID IT. JUST PLEASE TRY IT OUT. TAKE A B4 AND AFTER PIC AND POST IT I WILL LOVE TO SEE IT. THANK YOU. GOOD LUCK. WE ALL SPENT A LOT OF OUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON OUR SETUPS, LETS MAKE THEM LOOK AS GOOD AS THEY CAN. AGREE?

Well, im using componet..But my tv is far from factory settings...I went into the service manual and changed a lot of things..I got 1 to 1 pixel ratio thru component. And RGAIN 61 GGAIN - 61 BGAIN - 61 and among other things.

But im using vivid mode.
Iris - 1
Picture - 100
Brightness - 50
color - 31
Hue - 5
Color Temp - natural
Sharpness - 20
Noise reduction - 0ff

And my Custum are the same but i use Black corrector - low and Advanced iris -low

Dang, Uptown, why don't you stop beating around the bush and tell him what you really think!

Personally, the color temp is cooler than I prefer, but other than that it's not a bad picture. The contrast appears a little too high as well, but that can be due to the camera he took the picture with. Some of my screen shots have the whites blown out, when on the TV they don't actually look like that.

You won't be disappointed....HOWEVER, you should make sure your router is on the approved xboxlive list. I know it sounds silly, but this game's net code can wreak havoc on some routers, knocking them out and forcing you to reboot the router in order to get internet access back (for the entire system, not just the 360). Even port forwarding/DMZ tricks don't work. All other 360 games, both on DVD and Arcade, work fine, but for some reason this particular game's net code is different than the others.

I had to buy a new router (d-link a/b/g) but once i plugged in the new router it worked perfect out of the box. There are many threads on it, but here's one to look at on the xbox.com forums (http://forums.xbox.com/1/9013108/ShowPost.aspx#9013108) .

HOly crap!! I'm glad I read this post. I have a Netgear router and I was having the same problem, where all my internet access would be hosed. I woul dhave to restart my router and even my cable box sometimes. Ok, ALOT of the times. The other game I've had this issue with is Halo 2, but I wouldn't expect anythiing less from Bungie.

Glad to know I wasn't going crazy.

Thanks for the info. I have the Linksys WRTG54 wireless router which is XBOX Live certified. I'm also using the Microsoft wireless adapter and I noticed in my network settings that NAT was set to "moderate". I can't figure out why though. I haven't had any consistent problems playing games on Live though. The only I game I really play nowadays is Gears of War.

I'm not that interested in the versus multiplayer with R6:Vegas. I'll probably just stick with co-op and single-player.

Yeah it was frustrating...and worse it just wouldn't let you play...it would be fine until it searched for a match...then it would SHOW you the matches where everyone else was having fun...then the connection would die. Reboot the router, log back in to live, startup R6, start multiplayer, search....DROP again lol. If it hosed AFTER I was done playing it would be much less of an issue.

Check netgear's site for their xbox live compatibility list. My old router (wgt624 v3) and version are compatible (hardware), but my firmware is too RECENT (the horror) to work with it. Although I could download the older firmware, the upgrade (downgrade) wouldn't take on the router. Don't get me started on why Netgear would BREAK xbox compatibility with a firmware upgrade...

So I bought a new router...that's how much I love the game. Of course I still suck at it, but at least now I can practice online :-)

I don't want to hijack the thread, I linked to a thread in my above post. Go to the end of the thread and you'll see my post (my username is archie68) where I list my bridge and new router combo. It also has links to netgears site. Good luck!

EDIT: If you find your router hardware and firmware ARE compatible, but you are still having the proble, then you probably need to use port forwarding or put the 360 in the DMZ. There's a link for instructions on how to do this in the same post.

It's a 12' rope light from Home Depot. You get some of the sticky things and zip ties and it sticks to the back and is the exact same length as the plasma. There was a giant thread here on it. I think the title was ambiant light or something.

LOL!!! I appreciate the warning, but its perfectly safe up there. The center channel speaker is much deeper than the 360, and all the cables are tied up so that there is negative pressure on it.

I think it depends on the room. I know some commecial locations where they have actual "fire walls". To meet code in order to run wiring through those you need to do it a very specific way or it violates code. We had some people get in trouble for the way they ran wire in one of our workplaces.

NoThru22

You have to run fire rated power cables through walls or you're in violation of the code. You can not take a 15 foot computer power cable and run it through a wall and meet code. Didn't stop me from doing it for my projector.

Hey guys new to the forums, anyways, Ive been checking out this thread along with some other photos threads, and I was wondering about all of those Dolby Digital and DTX Sound plaques that you guys have on your walls. Where did you get them, how much, etc.

Thanks

Andrew

You can get them from time to time on e-bay. You may have to frame them yourself though.

You've got a 360, PS3, and Wii and you're saying you don't make that much money? Maybe not.

By the way, I've got the 32" version of the same tv you have as my secondary HD set and it cost nearly a grand. Plus with all the PC stuff you've got, you're making more than alot.

I would seriously put some effort into hiding some of those wires.

Well yeah i've been putting money into this for about 2 - 3 years, but when I do get a bigger TV preferable a 47 1080p then it'll be cleaned up. I tend to move my stuff around alot so thats why its messy. But thanks for the feedback!

if u have a pc, setup windows media connect (u should see an icon in control panel. if not dl it). with it u can access all of your music, videos, and photos from any winxp computer in your house. while im surfing and i see a background that i like, i save it to my pictures. then when im on my 360, i browse to the folder and make it my background. i usually play my music while playing games too. nice to have your own soundtrack!

Awesome setup JB.

Just wondering, is it better to put the sub next to you or across from you? Right now, I have my sub opposite from where I sit, as seen in the pics below.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/130/321501489_e3d0b17a34_o.jpg

I have 2 tables next to my sofa, so I was thinking of either putting it under one of the table, or maybe moving one of the tables somewhere else.

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/128/321503703_9abf5e5944_o.jpg

Is there any benefit to having the sub next to you rather than having it away from you? Anyone else have an opinion?

(I should update my pictures considering I painted the hole in the wall that I made when running the speaker wires :p )

Actually, that's exactly the opposite of what happens. Most subs are usually placed in the corner because the reflections from the walls created a more even dispersion of the bass frequencies throughout the room, and actually reinforces the bass response. Frequencies below 100 Hz are non-directional anyway, so placement doesn't need to be directly in front or behind you. Even far off to one side, you'll still hear it evenly in both ears.

Here's a way to test for where you should place your sub: put the sub in your normal listening position, then start a test tone and walk around the room and find where the bass sounds the loudest. Wherever that is, that's where the sub should go. Normally, you'll find it to be in a corner.

subversive

Experiment with your sub's placement.

I don't totally agree with that. I have my sub in the back of the room, behind my couch off to one side, and I get localization. (I'd much prefer to have it up at the front of the room, but I don't have the space.)

From what I've gathered reading various information online, three features are ideal. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR) - corrects brownouts (low AC voltage) and over-voltages, Surge Protection, and Noise Filtering - for EMI/RFI. At the very least some type of surge protector should be used. Many mid-priced models also include Noise Filtering. Just beware that those units do not protect against brown outs. AVR is required for that. According to industry techs brown outs and over-voltages cause cumulative damage on delicate system components, resulting in wear and the possibility of shortened product lifespan. Many people overlook that because they are so focused on that one catastrophic spike or surge.

So far I have only found one company that sells a unit which has the three above mentioned features, along with COAX, Phone, and Ethernet Protection Jacks, but does not include a UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) - that is APC with their AV line. Most units with AVR also have battery backup. A UPS would be ideal for DLP/RPCRT in order to protect the fragile light bulb and/or if you wanted to save settings on a DVR or receiver if a blackout were to occur. Since I don't have a DLP or RPCRT I can't justify the added expense. And losing settings on other components is not a big deal since power outages aren't frequent for me. :)

I am not in the least bit worried about losing user presets in case of a black out , or anything, so I can only assume that these types of conditioners only aid in rural areas, HUGE home theater systems and are kind of like over priced power strips.

I just picked up this one last night from staples on a whim (as well as a zune player that may be going back in a few .. but that's another story...)

http://www.staples.com/sbd/img/cat/enl/s0154530_enl.jpg

Even though it is a store-branded piece of equipment, the specs seemed spot on. It is rated at 4140 joules, and was a step up from the belkin strip I was using (IMHO).

The delima.... I, like most people, have invested thousands of dollars into my home theater system, and I am wondering if my $60 power strip will protect things, or should I take another dip and pick up another thousand dollar piece of equipment to do the job...

Ceiling mounted about 15' from the wall. I ran all of the video cable from the base of the wall up to the celing (behind the drywall) and then across the ceiling (again above the dryall) to a hole behind where the projector is mounted.

SixkillerNYC
12-29-06, 12:31 PM
This actually isn't my living room, more of a rec room :) It's kind of oddly shaped, since there's another fifteen feet off to the right of the screen (making that side of the room open) and room behind the counches that i use as an office. The actual theater portion is about 16' wide x 13' deep, so you're seeted about 11' from the screen.

Awesome setup JB.

Just wondering, is it better to put the sub next to you or across from you? Right now, I have my sub opposite from where I sit, as seen in the pics below.

I have 2 tables next to my sofa, so I was thinking of either putting it under one of the table, or maybe moving one of the tables somewhere else.

Is there any benefit to having the sub next to you rather than having it away from you? Anyone else have an opinion?

(I should update my pictures considering I painted the hole in the wall that I made when running the speaker wires :p )

Everyone's room is a little different. Having it in a corner normally will give you a little stronger bass response than in the middle of a wall. But each setup is different. I have my sub, in my living room HT, on a side wall in front of the listing position and it sounds great there. I would play with different positions and see what works best for you. The only downside, I have with the sub next to me, is if I am sitting real close to one side so I am almost on top of the sub I notice some bass localization. If I move over even a foot I don't notice it.

I purchased it at a store called Copenhagen here in Metro Phoenix. They sell a lot of Denmark imports and such. It was $1300.

No, there are no problems at all with the glass doors, either with the 360 controllers or other remotes.

The 360 has its own shelf and there's plenty of space in it, so I'm not worried about it overheating.

JeffChap
12-31-06, 10:52 AM
I've had my 360 enclosed in a cabinet since June with no problems either. There's only about 3" of open space above it and 5" on either side. There was a knockout panel in the back of the cabinet for cable passthrough that I removed to let some heat out, and occasionally I'll crack the front door open if I'll be playing for hours. But otherwise I just leave it be.

My only problem is that the DVD remote is only IR and not RF, so it won't work through the wooden door. Therefore I lack direct access to the direct DVD controls like Pause and Play, and have to use the controller and pull up the DVD menu first. I have a couple of DVD based games (ie. Scene It) that this is a hassle for.

BTW - I put it in there because I couldn't stand the noise, especially while watching movies. My 360 sounds like a blowdryer.

It still works, so I'm not messing with it. A friend of mine has one that's quiet too. I've confirmed that it's the fan and not the DVD that's noisy, since it's still loud even with the drive tray open. My theory is that on some models the fans run at a higher speed more often than they do on others. It may have been a stopgap design change by by MS to address the overheating failures. My build date is 12/05, so it wasn't one of the original launch builds.

The SD content is fine, I try to stay away from SD as much as possible though. :P

The shelves are all black tempered glass. The stand is made by Z-line and AFAIK only available thru Tweeter. You can't find it online, they only have it in their furniture catalog and in stores.

"Delray Designs By Z-line Jazz TV Stand." It is availabe in 20"x60"x25" and 20"x50"x25". Mine is the latter. I have a couple more pictures in the Plasma Furniture thread over on the Plasma forums here.

Maybe its just me, but those pics dont look that good. Not saying its your tv, but the contrast and brightness look way too high. And why did you zoom in with the camera? These pics arent sharp at all, way to close to the screen to get an idea off how the tv really looks. The shots of King Kong also look overly saturated(too much color).

No, I haven't done any calibration to it. I messed with the settings and used some that I found on this site. But nothing major.

I zoomed in on the camera, because I didn't know how they would turn out.

Any suggestions?

I must have changed it on accident. It was set to Vivid, not custom.

I suggest using a tri-pod for one, it helps with the pictures. My pictures on this page are from an inferior TV to yours (RP LCD A10). If you calibrated your TV, your pictures will look even better than mine.

P.S. - Looks like you have a pretty quick Lightning there. I have an 85 Mustang GT with a best time of 13.2 @ 107 mph naturally aspirated.

assasyn, u can use this to calibrate your TV's contrast and brightness:

This will get your contrast/brightness correct.

This is the .ts file to calibrate contrast / brightness. Its converted to WMV already for easy streaming i will leave this up for a couple days.

What you want to do on this is get contrast to where you are happy with white looking white and not grey.

Now for brightness turn it up until you see all the black bars flashing....now turn brightness down until the outer two bars are just barely visible in the large square black areas of the video.

http://www.members.cox.net/acmoses/needlepulse.zip

This is how you get it to your 360 using a digital camera:

Do you have digital camera and a SD card?

If so, you can download the video to the SD card and insert the card in the digital camera. Connect the digital camera via USB to the 360 and go to video at the Media tab. Click on portable device and the video should be there.

Some great setups here and I've been meaning to upgrade my current 720p set to a 1080p set but I'm a bit concerned about overscanning. On my 52HMX84 the overscan is very much noticeable. So if anyone is willing to write this to a flash drive or CDR and run it through their X360 to see if they're set has overscan. Here are the images and I would appreciate some feedback. Apologies since this is a bit off topic.

I don't remember if I said this before, but 720x480 (displayed) is either 4:3 or 16:9, not 4.5:3. The person who made that image is making false assumptions that the pixels are perfectly square. Obviously, your display is not showing them as perfectly square pixels.

Yup, it's the 88 (has PIP, cablecard and the black cabinet)... the bezel still had the protective, reflective plastic on it when I took the shot. Even with it off, though, the bezel still isn't as dark as the shiny case (much darker than the silver bezel on the 87, however).
