View Full Version : Just bought a Magnavox 42MF230A/37 Plasma... Good or no? Relationship to Philips...
mhollinger 11-26-05, 01:23 PM Well, in the fervor of "Black Friday," I managed to purchase a Magnavox 42MF230A/37 display from Best Buy. I got a price match against a local retailer, bringing the total cost down to [deleted]
I got a great deal I think, but can't find any info on the display online. Heck, the only things I really came across were people asking about the TV thanks to BF ads.
So, some questions:
1. What is the relationship between this display, and Philips-branded Plasmas? Are there any similarities other than the size of the display?
2. The model numbers are very similar: My "42MF230A/37" sounds very much like the Philips "42PF7320A/37." How do you read these model numbers? I can get the "42" is the size, the "M" vs the "P" might be the brand... and then what?
3. The display looked good as I started fiddling with its menus. They ran short movie clips, which let me fiddle with black levels, contrast, etc. What do you folks think of it? I saw a thread asking similar questions, (thread 608011 since I can't post URLs yet  ) that didn't really speak to the Magnavox display, but did recommend just about every *other* display mentioned. I also just saw a thread asking about vertical banding... hopefully I won't see that.
4. Was it a good deal at that price? I think so... but at the time I was shopping for a LCD projection TV, and made a little bit of an impulse buy after they actually accepted the price match... of course, the plasma was actually cheaper than the LCD projection unit I was looking to purchase at the time.
If you can answer any of these questions, I'd appreciate it (and I'm sure others that may be in my situation would as well).
I forgot to say that part of the reason I got the thing was that I was able to purchase it at a BB in Memphis, TN (where my folks live) for delivery in Austin, TX (where I live). Apparently the BB sales system is integrated enough that a store in TN can sell out of a warehouse in TX. Thanks to this happy coincidence, the TV's not being delivered until Wednesday the 30th, so I have until then to get this thing canceled if I need to... should I?
G'day,
~ Mike Hollinger
I called Magnavox about this unit and the tech support guy knew very little about it. I had some reward zone certificates so I bought one. We are going to use it as our everyday television for news and network offerings so I wasn't looking to spend a bunch. It is suppose to be here tomorrow (27th) so I will see how it looks after a proper setup. I will try to get a glimpse at the back of the glass and anything else I can. If it is so bad that everyone complains about the picture then it will be easy enough to take it back.
mhollinger 11-26-05, 05:17 PM Yep. I imagine there will be more posts regarding this TV for the next few weeks as folks like us who bought the TV at Best Buy filter in.
At least I'm not the only one who thought it was worth a gamble...
superstein61 11-26-05, 06:39 PM This Magnavox Plasma is made by Phillips. Phillips traditionally uses the Magnavox line to compete against lower priced competition by providing value priced products based on tried, proven technology.
In essence, what I believe that to mean is that while this TV isn't the latest and greatest newest technology - it is based on previous Phillips designs and products
You can find out more info online on the Phillips site but it was hard to track down. I would post the URL but since I can't post URLs yet this is a bit harder to do - but go to
Hopefully that helps
superstein61 11-26-05, 08:10 PM well so much for trying to post some info just to the manufacturer's web site - the info was edited out of my last post.
Anyway, while I haven't explored this in full detail yet, I suspect based on a cursury review that this may be based on a scaled down version of the discontinued Philips 42PF9976

This impresses me about BB--I ordered a Zenith plasma on Saturday in Kansas and it was delivered the next day to my son in Chicago--they even waived the delivery fee.
vtwinguy 11-26-05, 10:26 PM I am also very interested to hear about the PQ of this set. In my local BB the set looked terrible. The picture was all fuzzy in fact the Maxent Ed-TV looked much better. The salesman assured me this was not the signal and that "Magnavox does not make the greatest TV" So I'm thinking it was just a bad floor model. Let me know how the picture turns out.

The set looked clear and was sharp when showing text. Their demo loop looked fine on movie clips, and the set looked clear and bright on the text / graphics screens. I was able to clearly see the mpeg compression artifacts around the text up close, so I'd say it was sharp. ;)
I didn't buy the Best Buy warranty plan, so we will definitely have it set up before the delivery folks walk out the door. I'll roll through a quick series of tests off the DVI port of my PC. Hrm. Now that I think about it, I need to get a DVI cable... I'm more concerned about stuck / dead pixels, or bad columns in the display. The actual overall picture quality I'm sure will be good. I mean, compared to my 27" POS with no working tuner that requires a cable box, anything will look good. :)
superstein61 11-28-05, 12:45 AM Was able to set mine up today. But I am waiting for my Digital Cable box for HDTV from Comcast - so could only run it on my old basic cable.
Running on basic cable - standard TV PQ was fair - but my guess is part of that is due to running it in wide screen instead of normal mode (trying not to use 4:3 picture during the first 100 hrs) and part due to the basic cable.
I did try out a couple DVD players I have hooked up to it - one via Component and one via S-video. Excellent PQ on both. Watched Star Wars Episode III and it was amazing PQ.
GotBoost 11-28-05, 01:40 AM I too talked my fiance into this plasma while waiting in line for black friday. Actually I really wanted the 46" DLP. Unfortunately it was rainbow city for us when we looked at it. I never really wanted a plasma before, and always research everything (it took months on avs to choose my lcd projector) but at 5am with no sleep you'd be surprised at what you will buy. I was very pleased to be watching football and greys anatomy today in beautiful hidef. SD digital satellite is ok in 4:3 mode. once you zoom or stretch it it becomes quite blurry, fuzzy, etc but turning up sharpness seems to help some. ota hidef is something to behold, although I am not accustomed to watching hidef yet. I just bought it for hidef football and as a downstairs non dvd main tv. i was mesmerized watching leno and conan in hd. the richness of color and detail is spectacular. they were also showing star wars ep ii in hd ota and thats when i knew i wouldn't have to fight off impulse buyers remorse.
i actually think it will look better once broken in some (about 12 hrs on it so far maybe) but i havent gotten out video essentials yet to adjust things. i am following the so called "break in" guidelines, mostly forcing myself to watch everything in fat mode, but gave that up and just switch to watching sd in cinema. the set seems to have only the most basic video controls and i havent seen any way to adjust the brightness of the side bars when watching sd content. i'm also not sure what anti burnin features it may have or anything like that. the remote is laughably bad but who cares it gets the job done. sound isnt too good but acceptable if somewhat muddy; best to have a set of speakers for it.
i can't wait to get a hidef directivo and find out more about it and see what others think who can make a more educated judgement about this set. bottom line is for the price i paid i am very happy. worst case i can get a big$ set later on and stick this in another room.
mhollinger 11-28-05, 11:47 AM I tend to agree with you on the sharpness, having spent an hour in BB here in Austin tinkering with the set some more. They had a panasonic above it which I was comparing against. The Panasonic's sharpness and vividness was noticeably better than the Magnavox. However, when I poked at the Pan's display settings, someone had tinkered with it, put it in "vivid" mode, and a few other things. I disabled that, and put it back in a more realistic PQ mode, and got the Magnavox to look very close to the Panasonic. I walked away, and about 5 minutes later came back and they looked nearly identical to my eye.
I think the TV can't do the "sharpness" or create the visual "pop" of some other sets, but for hundreds of dollars less, on normal TV, I won't mind. My only concern is standard definition video feeds -- BB didn't have any way to pipe a SD signal to it.
Ambrosiu 11-28-05, 10:20 PM Can anyone recommend a HD antenna for this TV?
Rammitinski 11-29-05, 01:03 AM Go on over to the HDTV Hardware threads or to your local area reception thread for the best responses to that question.
falcinator 11-29-05, 12:12 PM I picked this up early Friday as well. After seeing no reviews on the net I just winged it for the price.
So far I am generally pleased with the set, slightly disapointed and not overwhelmed at the same time.
The image quality seems to vary distinctly between DVD's. This is my first HD TV of any kind so I'm not sure if that's standard. So far I seem to adjust the picture a bit for each different movie but am deciding to set EP. 3 as the benchmark.
The sharpness setting is locked on all component feeds, odd.
The menu's aren't extensive but provide enough basic options.
The blacks seem adequate but do seem to fade a bit in extreme darkness. Switching between modes and channels takes a while, there's a definite pause of a second or two. Not sure if this is standard with Plasma's though.
Oddly enough the HD signal coming from my rabbit ears through broadcast tv seems the most impressive so far. Colors are very vibrant and detail is the most crisp, unlike DVD's which seem very soft and film-like.
I'm curious to see what other's think of this set who have more experience.
Also, my PS2 seems to fail to recognize this set as Progressive when I try to adjust the settings.
Bought my BB Magnavox at the sale this weekend. The sound was tinny and sounded like it came from an old radio. It didn't matter how I adjusted it, it sounded bad. I called the BB salesman and he said since I didnt buy thier extra warranty I would have to put it back in the box and bring it back. The salesman on the phone sounded like he didnt want to mess with me and started making excuses for the sound. ( Oh, Plasmas are just like that/ Did you buy the display?(no)/Oh, you didnt have US deliver it (like I broke it)/ etc. ) So I was ready for a fight.
Once I got it to the store the GEEK squad saw I brought it back in the box and said I should find a salesman and see if they had anymore.(I knew I had bought the last one Saturday) I did as he said, and the salesman (not the one I talked to on the phone) said there were 5 in the warehouse and he would have one sent to the store. Then the store manager suggested we just have it delivered to our home since it had be delivered somewhere, even though we did not pay to have it delivered the first time. No fight, no hastle! I should have my new one delivered on Thursday. I sure hope the sound is better and there aren't any new issues. I would hate to have to bring it back again and look like I can't be pleased. They treated me much better than I expected. Thanks Best Buy!
GotBoost 11-29-05, 08:03 PM The sound is not very good anyway. I turned my bass and treble settings all the way up. It sounds muddled as a result of the speakers facing rearward of the set, and they are small. It has a headphone out on the side that I've hooked up to a set of powered computer speakers with sub and that works well. You can disable the internal speakers and still control the volume with the remote. I noticed the lack of distinction in the dark blacks as well. I believe this will improve once the brightness of the set dims as it gets used and you can turn the settings up.
That different DVD's would look different doesn't surprise me, especially if some of them are of older films. The transfer process comes out different, higher resolution sets unfortunately make it easier to see the defects as well, and until the set is properly calibrated it may make some look good and others look terrible. I'm not positive but I believe on the hidef inputs the sharpness is disabled altogether. Also note that each set of inputs has its own video settings so you will need to set them for each input.
To be honest I haven't checked DVD's, my DVD player is upstairs with the projector but they have to look better than the old TV and as good as anything comparable for the money.
Ambrosiu 11-30-05, 02:36 AM This too is my very first HD set. It looked very comparable to the higher end models at the store when watching it side by side. Over all I am pleased with the set. Only problem that I have is that I am not able to get any sound out of the set. I am not sure if it is defective or if it is my wiring. Curently I am running my sound from my HD Cable Box to my receiver and listening to the sound through the receiver, which I believe will be much better than the set, but it still bothers me that I am not able to get sound through the set itself.
Any suggestions?
falcinator 11-30-05, 12:15 PM Ambrosiu, stupid question but did you disable the TV speakers or is this just an issue with the set itself...?
I finally got to hook up my game systems, makes them all look crappy, even the Xbox. I guess this is a good thing....? Proving that the set's display is so good that current gen systems end up showig all their sore spots and looking like PS1 games, ick.
Curious. To enable progressive scan on the PS2 with the triangle, X trick, do you have to have it hooked up via component cables? This could be my problem.

I think the sound is horrid on this TV! The picture quality is good. It is a smidge soft. It looks great for 35 mm HD footage though. I haven't tried ESPN HD or similar channels since I didn't order the HD pack from Time Warner.
The sound is simply... bad... its hollow. The speakers must be tiny. I guess I'll have to accelerate my plans for a new receiver. It looks great on DVI, though from my cable box. :-)
Oh, by the way, I got a HDMI -> DVI cable for $8.50 or so including shipping and tax... the joys of the internet. The HDMI -> DVI I got from BB will go back as soon as I get the new one in the mail.
G'luck with everything... I'd take a picture or two, but I'm not sure how to get my camera to capture a good picture of the thing in action.
Also, I plugged in some PC speakers to the headphone jack on the TV... the sound was wretched! I got a great 60 cycle hum... to the poster that plugged in PC speakers, were they powered? If so, did you have to do anything special?
GotBoost 11-30-05, 01:44 PM I have a hum as well but it doesn't seem to be that bad with my speaker set. You have to adjust the volume of the speakers and the volume of the tv independantly until you reduce it. ie you probably would have to turn the tv volume way down and the speakers all the way up or vice versa until you reduce the humming. I have to do the same thing when using a tape adapter to input sound from my laptop in my car.
Ambrosiu, I would go over that wiring again. Try to get sound by plugging the cable box or an ipod or something into the side inputs and set the video to side inputs and see if you get sound, just to elimate hardware failure. If you get sound then just recheck to make sure the video and audio are going into the same set of inputs.
Still enjoying the TV. Monday Night Football looked great. Still hate SD stretching but I've gotten used to using cinema mode on regular TV and it isn't that bad.
I too just purchased this tv, overall I am very pleased so far, a big step up from my previous samsung projection tv, that would only do 480p and 1080i, I have mine hooked up via hdmi to dvi, and the picture is outstanding, xbox 1 looks great in 480p also, I tried hooking my pc up to it via vga, and 1024x768 was as high as I could go using powerstrip, is that normal? I'm assuming thats the tv's native resolution, but either way I'm happy with my purchase so far

Did you make sure in the Audio set-up the speakers are turned on and not turned off?
In any case - like everyone else says, the sound from the TV itself is crappy - you are better off running them thru your receiver. I think the speakers are small and point to the rear - so depending on how the set is situated, its not ideal for sound direct from the TV. Its adequate for a show here or there, but since I planned to use it with my 5.1 surround setup, its no big deal to me
Ambrosiu 11-30-05, 11:11 PM OK I can't get the sound out of the TV, but from what I am reading it is not worth trying to get it to work anyway.
I think the instructions on this thing is very lacking. Does anyone know how to mount this thing on a wall?
Rico.
PlasmaToad 11-30-05, 11:21 PM I too bought this because of the sale\rebate price from BB. Picture quality is great with cable. I have to agree with the sound. It's very poor. It sounds like someone talking into a cup. I too get a hum from the headphone jack.
I do have one problem. My XBOX 1 plays back DVD's poorly. There's a faint background of blue and black vertical lines. I didn't have any problems with my other DVD player (I know longer have it by the way). And I didn't encounter it with the XBOX games. I thought it was the cheap component cables, so I decide to try out Monster from the CC website. I drove to the store and picked it up. Went home and plugged in the cables. I still encountered those lines.
Any suggestions for my XBOX?

superstein61 12-01-05, 11:24 PM For those who hooked this up via the DVI port, what do you have it hooked up to?
I had my cable company here today, Comcast, and they installed a Digital Cable set-top box from Motorola and tried to connect using a DVI to DVI cable with no success. The TV would not recognize the connection. The tech told me he had the same problem at another house today who had purchased the same TV. I am trying to figure out what the problem is and how to remedy.
Thanks
superstein61: I have mine hooked to my sa 8300 through adelphia cable, and haven't had any problems yet, on a side note, I have the 8300 setup to passthrough and when I go from a 720p channel to a 1080i channel I get a pink line or sometimes multiple lines on the screen where I have to turn the tv off and back on and the lines are gone, this doesnt happen all the time, but it does it quite abit, anyone else expirencing this?

I have the 8300HD as well. I have an HDMI -> DVI cable connected. I set up the box so that all channels, regardless of their true type, are pulled up or pushed down to 720p. I also set the HD format type to "fixed." Was this a bad idea for this panel?
I haven't seen any flickering or lines like you described.
I have, however, randomly seen the picture go black for a half-second or so and come right back. If I instant replay that section of footage, I don't see the blackout. It might do this two or three times in a three hour period.
broncofan 12-02-05, 11:27 AM I also bought the same tv during the black friday madness at bb. I have mine hooked up to a comcast Motorola set top box. I have it connected with component cables and also have the problems with the pink lines when switching from a normal channel to a HD channel or vise versa.
I have also noticed that the top of the tv seems to get very hot, hotter than I would expect any home electronic device to get. Is this normal, and has anyone else noticed this? ( not the very top where the plastic piece is but the top of the back where the vents are, if that makes sense)

Mine gets hot too. I checked a friend's plasma, and after a few hours of use his was warm at best. I guess this TV just gets hot.
I'm 50/50 on whether this thing's going back to Best Buy... it just seems so... "rough around the edges."
superstein61 12-04-05, 07:40 PM thanks for the replies. I had a problem getting the DVI to DVI to work from my Motorola box (DCT6200 I believe) so I ended up just using component cables and am very pleased with the PQ now. the NFL games today were awesome in HD. Yes, I agree the set is a bit "rough around the edges" but then again, I can't find anything comparable without spending at least $1000 more than I did.

I am in the same boat about taking it back. We like the picture but my wife complained about the sound. She doesn't hear well and I do not want to set up a receiver to direct the sound thru. Will be making my mind up in the next couple of days.

I'd planned all along to set up a sound system -- the sound quality simply accelerated my decision. By the way -- you folks may want to email magnavox support, or call them and let them know about any "rough edges." I sent a note, and was asked to call to talk about the display. We'll see where this goes. 1-800-705-2000 7AM-11PM EST Mondays-Saturdays, and 8AM-11PM on Sundays.
I hate being the guy that writes a "call to action" email... its about as stupid as saying, "I hate this company! If enough of us get together and boycott them, surely they'll listen!"
The picture quality does amaze me daily, however. American Chopper was cool, and Discovery HD theater's awesome.
I'm just trying to do my best to keep the picture "justified" and keep black bars off the edges if at all possible -- my friend's plasma isn't exactly "burned in," but the edges are just faintly brighter than the "main" portion of the screen since he hates watching stretched TV.
Oh, and I agree with the other poster that said you can't get a better TV for < $1,000 more. I priced several out, and they were all nearly $1,000 more with shipping (and without in some cases).
(slightly off topic) Finally, I got my DVI cables in today -- I'd post a link but I've been censored by the forum moderators several times already. I bought a HDMI -> DVI cable for less than I paid in tax for my "retail" cable from Best Buy. The picture quality is identical. I suppose you could private message me if you wanted to know where they came from? Is it safe to say that? Or can I just go ahead and post my link?
superstein61 12-07-05, 09:35 PM Michael - yes, I have emailed Magnavox support as well - hopefully those rough edges can get worked out. Since I had an existing 5.1 sound system that we rarely used with our old CRT set - I am actually quite happy putting it to use now daily - LOL. It makes a huge difference and the PQ still amazes me.
I too have tried to just watch full screen TV with no black bars. I set my cable box from Comcast to upsize any 4:3 picture automatically - so that took care of any SD station. But since the PQ is so much better on a HD station - even when the program isn't in HD (like local news) - I have to be careful and zoom the picture then
broncofan 12-08-05, 10:16 AM How do you set your cable box to upsize 4:3 automatically?
mhollinger 12-08-05, 06:11 PM So has anyone had trouble programming this TV into their universal remote?
When I attempt to program it into my cable box's remote (the remote's an AT8550 for an Explorer 8300HD), the only code that seems to work mutes the audio when I press the power button.
I thought this was a fluke, but the OneForAll remote, a URC-6131nw800 had the same problem! I found on the one4all that the "angle" button happens to turn on or off the TV.
Has anyone gotten a cable company universal remote to work? I need to know which remote to request if one works.

PlasmaToad 12-08-05, 10:45 PM How do you set your cable box to upsize 4:3 automatically?
I think you mentioned that you have a Motorola STB. If it's like mine, then what you do is turn off your STB and hit the menu button on the Motorola remote control. There is a menu option for the STB that will display on your screen.
superstein61 12-09-05, 01:14 AM How do you set your cable box to upsize 4:3 automatically?
Well I am sure it depends on the Cable Box you have. I have a Motorola DCT6200/6208. I just went on their website, found info about the hidden tech menus and followed the instructions. Quite easy for the box I have. If you have the same, I can quickly describe what needs done - let me know

Yea - I too had trouble with the remote programming. i can get my cable company remote to adjust the sound on the TV but the power button ends up just muting the sound. Thats it and I have treid a bunch of things
falcinator 12-12-05, 06:39 PM I DO believe now my brothers.....unfortunately.
You see, last night after watching some of the game on ESPN in HD and playing a little Xbox, I noticed a couple of text displays, icons and the like fading into the screen after switching modes.
Having been neurotic about this all day I came home flpped on the weather and switched modes to once again notice a fade in as WELL as the 4:3 lines.
Ugh.
Turned to HBOHD, had the turdy Anchorman on and switched once again.
This time, NADA, a clean pic all the way through.
Now I had noticed this a couple weeks ago, seemed odd, thought it was the screen being transparenet and possibly shwoing insight into the mechanics of the device.
After all of this, I DO believe in the possibility of actual burn in. I guess what is going on now is just the image being held until something else wipes it away.....
Hmmn.
mhollinger 12-15-05, 04:35 AM I DO believe now my brothers.....unfortunately.

You know, I just woke up on my couch (yes, I fel asleep basking in the glow of my new display ;) ) and I got a mild heart attack when I noticed that the display was still on, but the cable box was off. As I walked up the display to turn it off, I noticed that I could clearly read a negative version of some screen from the DVR portion of the cable box! Somehow I managed to "fade in" the UI of the DVR, plus the grey bars on the left and right (I guess "Neutral isn't neutral enough of a grey" along with the channel selection and the screen itself. I basically had one static image on screen for < 5 hours overnight. At this point, when the display was showing a totally "black" input, I could clearly see a "burned in" picture!
I power cycled the display a few times, and let it run some other content on-screen for about 10 minutes, and now the grey bars are all but invisible on either side, the "picker" from the gui is now just a brigher region, but the "travel channel" bug is still faintly visible. :( I suppose I'll power cycle a few more times tonight, and just hope that as I watch more content the fade-in dissipates.
I suppose you could say the moral of the story is that this set does *not* feature pixel orbiting or any sort of fade-in protection at all.

As an update, I spent about 45 minutes showing a "white" screen from my laptop. The burn-in is all but gone. I can still see a faint edge where the two grey sidebars were. The travel channel bug has now disappeared however. Whew.
When I talked to a tech guy about this tv he told me there was no pixel orbiting built in so you need to be careful with static images.
I took mine back to Best Buy today. I could have lived with the picture just fine. The sound was just no good. For that kind of money, I expect to be able to hear it. Not have to spend more money on additional speakers. Time to upgrade again.
rvturnage 12-27-05, 09:46 AM I bought this TV before christmas and have been enjoying it (about 2 weeks now). While I haven't officially "calibrated it", I have brought the brightness & contrast down to better levels, probably around low 40's, as well as the color. There are a few drawbacks to the TV, but nothing that is a deal breaker or makes me want to spend another $8-900 on a different 42" plasma.
The drawbacks i've found are: Can't adjust sharpness on component or DVI inputs. Only composite or S-video. The "cinema" feature for distorting the picture won't work with higher resolution video, such as progressive DVD's or Cable input higher than standard Def TV. I find this a problem only because I try to view normal 4:3 content filling the screen to prevent the image retention that other's seem to have had. My cable box will distort the image, but it doesn't have the "cinema" setting which is supposed to distort the picture less. So far, i've used the cable box to either stretch, or zoom, depending on what I'm watching. I occasionally use the side-bar, but not often. So far, no signs of image retention.
Also, I too am having trouble programming it into my universal remote...
Finally, the only other problem I've had is with switching between inputs...from all I've been able to do, you have to manually cycle between the 7 inputs to get to the one you want. So in my case, I have a cable box on Component 1, and a DVD on component 2. When I want to switch from DVD back to Cable, I have to cycle through inputs 2-7 to get back to 1. There SHOULD be a way to click a button and scroll to the one you want. Perhaps there is, and I haven't seen it yet..
I don't have a problem with the audio (never even listened to the TV audio), as I have my audio running through my reciever.
Anyway, I'm probably a couple of hundred hours into viewing, and have seen no sign of image retention or other issues. Picture is very good, maybe not quite as sharp as some others (only my a hair), but not really noticible unless you're looking at it side by side with a Panny or Toshiba. I really love the colors on it, too. All in all, I'm QUITE happy with the purchase, especially as a starter set.
Thanks to everyone on this site that have provided me with insights on how to take care of the set, so i can enjoy it for years to come!

I bought this TV for myself for Xmas and so far it works pretty good. I'm running S-video to the set and using separate sound. I calibrated it using my copy of the Ultimate THX Demo DVD and it's looking good now. Right out of the box with standard composite cable it looked terrible. I chose this model over the EDTV from Panasonic for several reasons. For one, this model is HD, second, it has a nice black frame rather than an ugly silver one, and third, there's no speakers hanging off the edges which makes it look like a professional model which cost a few thousand more. I've got it hanging over my fireplace and couldn't be happier. I think it gives a good picture for the price.
mhollinger 01-17-06, 09:14 AM Some more updates after two months of usage:
1. The IR receiver on my TV apparently is pretty poor -- that, or the microcontroller is way too busy doing something else? I have several universal remotes and the original Magnavox remote, and at times, it appears that the TV simply ignores the power off command. This, however, might be an issue with my TV. See below.
2. I have had occasions where the picture "freezes" on screen. I'm not sure if this is my cable box, or my TV. I haven't had a chance to go swap out boxes to find this out. This is with a HDMI -> DVI cable for the video feed. I think it may be the TV, but I've also had the sound going to my receiver get choppy a few moments after this happens as well. I don't know which device is at fault here.
3. There have been times when I have attempted to turn off the TV using the physical button on the bottom of the set, and it has simply ignored the button press. If I held down the button, it might blank the picture and eventually turn off, but just as often (perhaps three times in two months) it has blanked the picture for a second or two, and remained on, and then brought the picture back up.
I originally thought these power problems were because the remote is incredibly wimpy, but I'm thinking it might be the TV itself... I'm kind of wishing I'd bought that warranty from Best Buy now...
If anyone else sees this sort of behavior, chime in.
mhollinger 01-22-06, 07:33 PM And thus continues the saga of the freeze-frame TV...
1. Regarding the crappy I/R receiver, I think the Sony remote I have is sending a signal too slow, or too fast. The TV usually will respond if I use its own remote.
2. & 3. I called Magnavox Support (800-705-2000) and complained about my TV going to a freeze-frame occasionally. The tech support guy said, "Its not our fault -- the cable box is sending a bad signal which causes the TV to freeze up." When I argued that the TV shouldn't freeze up if there's a corrupt signal, he never really gave me a valid answer. It is one thing if the TV were to freeze-frame the image, but still let me change inputs or turn it off, but it totally freezes.
Another person's already emailed me saying his does the same thing, so it seems to be a problem with this set. I'm swapping out the cable box Tuesday-ish (assuming there's nothing I want to DVR tuesday evening). We'll see if it helps...
I'm also going to check in on buying a warranty from best buy after the fact -- has anyone done this? I think it might be worth the $400...
For everyone else, I'd suggest that you stay away from this thing. Its bargain basement prices, and bargain basement quality.
mhollinger 03-23-06, 09:19 PM Hey Folks,
Figured I'd ask here, since I started the thread, and know a few people have this set and might be interested.
Does anyone know if the set is capable of jumping directly to a specific input, rather than scrolling through the many, many it has?
The Harmony Remote website mentions the commands, but does not have them in its database. Any clues?
I'm tired of scrolling through inputs for 30 seconds; the Harmony usually gets it wrong, for that matter, thanks to delays throwing off the remote's internal state vs. the TV.

mayhemsm 03-28-06, 02:33 PM I just bought this display from BB am I correct in assuming that most people do not like it? Or have problems with it? The picture quality looks excelent to me. The sound sucks but I have surround sound so I dont care much. Just looking for some more oppinions now that people have had it longer. Still have a few weeks to return it to BB.

Hey there; I agree that the picture looks good, though I really do believe the firmware in the TV is bad. Try to cycle through all the inputs. If you can get from "Tuner" to DVI in less than 30 seconds, I applaud you. :-)
I've had mine for about six months now, and generally like it. It still occasionally freezes, but I think that's isolated to my set.
what is this sets native resolution? and what is the com port for?
mayhemsm 03-30-06, 03:11 AM I cant get it to take anything but 1280x720, from my PC via DVI almost all other resolutions cause it to loose sync.
mhollinger - Do you have any problems with image burn-in? How about with static images that dont change / move? I plan on using this display with my PC often and playing games as well which have static images should i worry much about this?
Thanks
mhollinger 03-30-06, 08:58 AM what is this sets native resolution? and what is the com port for?
1024 x 768 with rectangular pixel elements. The serial port is just what it says it is; a debug / firmware update port.
I cant get it to take anything but 1280x720, from my PC via DVI almost all other resolutions cause it to loose sync.
mhollinger - Do you have any problems with image burn-in? How about with static images that dont change / move? I plan on using this display with my PC often and playing games as well which have static images should i worry much about this?

I used 1024 x 768 from my PC via VGA Monitor cable, and didn't personally bother trying any other resolutions.
Burn-in is not an issue. Ghosting, however, is. The pixels are all "brand new" and unaged; therefore if you show a static element scene, such as a windows desktop, they will all age at different rates. It's best to keep the pixels busy by watching moving pictures with no bars on any side for the first month or two (or three, if you don't watch much TV) so that they can all get "broken in" and aged about the same. After this break-in period, it will still be possible to cause uneven aging, but the effects will be minimized by orders of magnitude since the display will all be more or less the same age.
It's up to you whether you worry about it; I personally, do, but the only time I can see any effects is if I've played a game for an hour, blank the screen, turn off all the lights, and stare at it. I can eventually make out regions where the pixels were more active than others, but the effect goes away after a few minutes of watching other stuff.
My father is considering purchase of this set w/ a Denon HTIB to address the sound issue.
My concern is the set-up, specifically it's ability to work w/ a universal remote to minimize
complicated turn-on proceedures. I have read in previous posts about scrolling though inputs being a hassle. What about input from a cable box using either component or DVI
inputs? Alot of button pushing to frustrate my parents? I have dealt w/ my own Hitachi
plasma issues satisfactorily and I'm fairly savvy w/ setups. Will we have problems?
mayhemsm 03-30-06, 12:40 PM mhollinger - Thankyou for all your input its helped me feel alot more at ease. I've been curently trying to keep the screen full and running it as much as possible with video, trying to get it past the break in period so I can see how burn in / ghosting affects it before my 30 days are up.
Hpirx - The problem with the inputs are that they take ages to switch between. For example say I'm on input 1, I push the source button and it switches to input 2, I push it again and it will do nothing, you have to wait for a few seconds to switch again. Perhapse its a firmware issue as mhollinger has said and maby there will be a firmware update in the future.
cigga24 04-05-06, 04:08 PM I also got this during BF and i never had a problem with it in general. The onboard tuner is amazing. It's better then my D* H20 and my ATI HDWonder.
Regarding the inputs, just like everyone else it takes awhile. But how often are you changing them, just arrange your components for the fastest switch by use. TV component 1 - DVD/360 component 2 - PC (hopefully DVI) but VGA.
I also purchased a Harmony remote the 676. I also bought this because the site mentioned jumping to inputs directly but that doesnt work on here. I tried calling the tech support on that as well. If you get this remote you may have to call about the inputs because they had the input order wrong and i informed them and they fixed that but i'm not sure if it was for just my account. I had some issues changing channels and stuff but i set the input delay to 1500 ms and it works fine and changes more accurately than me pressing it when switching activities. I got my H20 and a 360 connected by component so switching isnt a huge issue. Now regarding the memory functions. It only remembers if you use the activity buttons. Say 'Watch TV' then 'OFF' then 'Play 360' it will do those fine. but if you do 'watch tv' then change tv input for some reason then press 'watch dvd' it will get the input wrong because it still thinks you are on 'watch tv'. Overall i would highly recommend this remote for this tv, it learns and the database is huge and the online setup is great and not having to make macros is a blessing. This has simplified my life greatly. From 7 remotes to 1 and controls everything in my home.
My problem is how are you guys getting your pc's connected through DVI? I have MCE 2005 and a FX5700LE and the pc sees the display but i cant get the display to see the pc. In other words i get no picture through DVI. I tried VGA but the resolution only goes to 1024x768 and i want the 720P. I went to 848x??? and it works but some underscan occurs sometimes. I bought a 12ft DVI cable to use so can someone tell me what VC you use and the drivers? Also has anyone tried to use a video card with component out and how well does it look compared to the DVI?
cigga, i have a evga 6800 gt, and dvi doesnt work for me either, just a blank screen, however, for the vga, I just use powerstrip for different resolutions
cigga24 04-20-06, 05:12 PM i tried powerstrip over vga and the best it gave me was 1024x768 the hd predefined resolutions gave me blank screen. Also it was my first time using PS though. Bennyt what resolution did you get with PS on vga and what drivers are you using?
cigga: using forceware 84.21, and 1368x768 is what I'm using now, havent tried to go any higher, shame I cant get dvi working with my pc
bump.... just checking to see if anyone has sucessfully gotten dvi from a pc to work with this tv
Anthony70 07-20-06, 02:16 PM I bought my Magnavox 42 inch plasma from BB about 5 months ago. Hung it in my office. I noticed right away my Plasma gets extremely HOT in the back at the top in the center. I have a 50 inch Sony in my living room and doesn't come close to how hot my Magnavox gets in my office. This is NOT normal. I had Best Best out to check it and they say everything is fine. Now about 5 months later, I noticed the screen will freeze, the audio continues but the picture freezes. Then it resets and then the picture and audio continues just fine. This happens every evening I have my Magnavox on, and I only have it on for about 30 minutes in the morning and 3 hours in the evening. This morning it froze three times in a matter of 30 minutes. I know its NOT the comcast HD DVR because it also froze while I was watching a DVD.
Does anyone else notice the extreme heat from the back and does your Magnavox picture freeze?
thank you
Anthony
yes mine has the extreme heat from the back as yours, and the video will freeze ocassionaly too, "using dvi to hdmi" its like the tv reboots and everything is fine, do you get the weird white lines when going from 720 to 1080?
Anthony70 08-19-06, 08:05 PM After BB came out four times trying to fix the heat my Plasma was giving off in the back. They decided, nothing more they can do. So they let me pick a new one out.
Out with the 42 inch Magnavox and I picked out a 42 Inch Insignia (BB Brand) So far so good :)
mhollinger 09-29-06, 03:31 PM So, another update:
I called Magnavox again, and told them that I've tried new cable box, and also had it freeze on my component video input.
They referred me to a local repair company who's apparently an authorized repair center.
Two reps just picked up the TV, and through some act of serendipity, it froze JUST as they walked in the door. Talk about luck. They got to see it freeze-frame, blank, and then reset. I have witnesses. :D
So its on its way to their shop, and I'm wondering what they'll do with it. For me, its frozen most often on the DVI input, but that's because I watch TV 99% of the time via DVI, and only occasionally watch a DVD on a component input.
Since every now and again I get emails from people, I guess i'll keep updating this thread... I'm beginning to think there's a reason why Magnavox quit making plasma TV's.
~ Mike
Ih8magnavox 11-06-06, 07:03 PM I am having the same issue with the tv freezing up, I got it in April, the repair shop has had it 2 different times, for 3 months altogether and it still does the same thing, has anyone had this issue resolved??? Magnasux says it needs to go back into the repair center AGAIN  , I'm so tired of dealing with this, the repair center has had the tv for the same amount of time as I have!!! If it doesn't get fixed this time it will be a lemon, and I can get a different TV, but I will have to pay the difference...Anyone have any luck getting theirs fixed due to it freezing up???
mhollinger 11-06-06, 07:20 PM Well, I forgot about this thread again, until I got the thread update note from you h8er.
It's been a good 6 weeks since they picked up the set. I had to drop off the remote Saturday (go figure why). They've replaced the picture processing card, and the microcontroller card that is, effectively, the 'brain' of the set.
I'm going to wait until Wednesday before calling again so I won't pester the repair guys. Its not their fault.
Re: your question, I know of at least one guy (posted here I think) that got best buy to replace his set with an Insignia model of the same size.
On mine, they needed the remote to adjust the picture alignment. Apparently there's a line going along one of the sides, or its not aligning properly; I hope they know how to access the service menu; there's no user-accessible picture alignment menu, and my standard "universal" remote profile for a magnavox is able to control the TV, while theirs could not, apparently.
We'll see. I need to call Philips / Magnavox and see i fthe work we're doing now is covered under an extended warranty since my original warranty term will be up in a few weeks.
Update: Their work is covered by an additional 30 day warranty, or the term of the original warranty, whichever is longer.
mhollinger 11-06-06, 07:29 PM Me being me, I have to ask:
Is the "difference" you have to pay the difference between the amount you paid on your receipt, or the "current value" of the TV?
patterone 11-11-06, 07:37 PM anyone get the service menu codes on this one?
I have the same television and all the same problems. Very hot out the top middle, and it freezes up on a daily basis, or at least semi-daily basis. I bought it on Black Friday exactly a year ago. For the price I have to say I'm still very happy with this set. I think BB made a mistake on the price, and they tried to wiggle out of it 3 times but finally sent me my television. The freezing is annoying, but I've seen a few different posts and it seems even after repair it still happens. So I just deal with it. Nice thing about my new DVR is that I rewind when it happens and watch it again. I've tried to find a pattern of what causes it to freeze, but I haven't figured one out yet.
Anyway today I went to a few different big box stores to find a TV for my bedroom and honestly I'm not that impressed with what's out there I'm trying to stay below about $1500 and I'm having a hard time deciding. If given a choice I would buy this Magnavox again. Even with the occasional freeze...
mhollinger 11-24-06, 04:55 PM Hey, so it *has* been a year. I got mine back from the repair folks a week or so ago; since that time, I've not seen it lock up.
I know they replaced two cards within the set; one was a picture processing card (a DSP), and the other was the microcontroller that controls the "brains" of the TV, like processing IR commands, controlling power, and so on.
Since I do what I do at work, I plugged in a serial cable to the "FW Update" port on the back, and after fiddling around, got different debug output before and after the update. It looks like I got a new firmware, along with my new cards. Since I've had the part swap done, the TV hasn't frozen (I'll declare victory in a month), but it does still get very hot. I think it just needs active cooling, which Magnavox / Philips didn't engineer in.
Given the choice, I'd have bought the extended warranty from (your favorite big box store). I won't be buying another magnavox though...
Here's the debug output *BEFORE* the card update (turning on and off the set, changing the volume, input select, and so on from a remote, and from the front panel)

I actually don't have debug trace from after the new hardware. I'll edit this and copy it up here for your reference though when I get back into town. It was substantially shorter... and didn't have all the nice warnings like the "--------jacob i2c write err[0] CurrentVideo[5]. " and so on.
bobmel22 01-14-07, 06:47 PM Well heating bills are probably lower now thanks to the t.v.
Sound is horrible.
Running compoment cables and dishnetwork non hd for now, and c.c. for regular dvd, and ps2 with standard cables in side inputs.
Video is for the most part good to very good, can't wait for hd
no real burn in or gousting as of yet. only minor and fixed by watching something else.
No freeze frame as of yet.
A good set for the money now five months old
chrissyscott 01-17-07, 11:54 AM My TV is getting to hot that the black frame around the TV is melting and the paint is flaking off - I also bought this tv from best buy black friday and notice it about a year later that its getting too hot that its melting the frame off - is anyone else having this trouble.
jared125 02-22-07, 10:46 PM Well my picture just went out. I was watching TV, went into the other room during a commercial, came back and the screen was blank. Turned it off and unplugged it for several minutes, powered it back on. The blue light came on, but nothing on the screen. Not even the little box that moves around telling you what source is active. I called Magnavox and they said I needed to fax them my receipt.
This is the first problem I have had with this unit. Unfortunately, it is a major one. Any suggestions or ideas???
chrism101 07-18-07, 08:21 PM Mine died the same death.
its like the power is on, and it wont turn off.
un plug it, plug it back in and it wil click on for a second long enough to see the box in the corner and it clicks back blank and wont turn off.
Out of Warranty, No service. 1 year 7 month old $1500 paper weight.
2ateup4u 07-18-07, 10:07 PM I also bought this plasma display, 11-25-05. It is now broken and at the repair shop, Today I recieved the news, It will take 1700.00 to fix, thats only the parts not labor. Also my T.V. had the same problems as that other guy, it would freeze up all the time
cigga24 11-13-07, 12:19 PM My Mag is still running but my issue is i cant get anything to be recognized on DVI. My PC gives no pic through DVI, I bought a PS3 and the HDMI > DVI gives no pic, bought a Tosh HD-A2 and still no pic. I know the cable works cause these same devices work on my LCD. I searched the net and no one can get a PS3 to work on this set, also considering a HD DVD player wont work something must be up here.
I bought the BB plan so i'll be doing the 3 replacements also, but Mag told me no parts for this set has changed and there has been no firmware update. I told BB and they said they still gotta try 3 times before giving me a replacement.
But generally i like the set, i wish the blacks were darker though and the input speed was faster.
stiltman 11-16-07, 02:40 PM Well, I bought mine way back when it was at BB's B-Friday deal too.
I too see the pain with having to hit the dang source button a ton of times trying to get to one source right before another...what a pain...drop down list would have been better.
I can not get any sound out of the headphone jack. Well, I take that back. If I turn the sound all the way up on the speakers and then on the TV, I hear a huge hum with the slight sound. Doesn't matter if I turn off the TV speakers or not. Useless...as normally inserting the headphones automatically turns off the speakers on any other electronic in use today.
I too feel the huge amount of heat this thing puts off
I also have a problem switching beteewn SD and HD signals. Some times i get the lines or bars across the screen (usually red or white). I then have to switch back and forth between the SD and HD cable box stations until there aren't any bars (component inputs)
I also have the same exact problem with my surround sound system with a upscaling DVD player. Going from 480 to 720 or 1080 and some times the lines appear. (DVI input)
I did get the extended warranty from BB so I'm prolly going to have them take a look at it. It's for 3 years so the longer I wait the better. I'm hoping they'll have to replace it do to not having parts avaliable.
cigga24 11-16-07, 03:16 PM I was thinking the same thing about waiting. But i been buying too much stuff and getting upset that my dvi doesnt work. I was certain the HD-A2 would work, but when that no signal icon popped up i wanted to throw my remote at it, so that was the last straw.
Regarding BB, they said they have to attempt 3 times. I called Magnavox and they said the tv is still new to them and they have all the parts. I would love the DVI to work since i'm not having any other issues.
So the BB tv tech called me today and i told him my story and the BB 3x policy. He said he would order me a new logic board and if it doesnt work then he would call the BB dispatcher. It probably cost more to do that repair 3 times than to replace the set.
So there may be a benefit in waiting but it doesnt seem like the parts wont be there. Plus it'll lessen your 3x replacement time and you may miss your cutoff.
Has anyone noticed lines going across diagonally on the screen. You can really see them on the no signal box, but i notice them on my PS3 startup screen/ XMB.
cigga24 12-02-07, 06:41 PM Update: I got a call from BB that the logic board was backordered, go figure. Anyway, my tv is displaying vertical lines on the right-side of the screen, you can see it very well on a single color screen. I'll call BB about this also.
cigga24 12-13-07, 11:04 AM Update: Anyone who has this set and a PS3 and a BB replacement plan, call for service. The tech guy said the Logic Board needed replaced and placed the order, two days later it was listed as backordered. I called a week later and BB had no notes on it and sent a request to the BB Parts Investigation. I just received a call today that the part is no longer available and my unit is on the list for replacement.
So if you are having DVI-HDMI "no signal" call for service cause the logic board is no longer available. They are also listing my set at $1700. They will call back in 4 days for what i have to do next.
I bought this TV in 2006 and played my Xbox and HDTV from comcast on it. well two weeks ago it died, I got two black vertical bars just right of center with a whispy green dotted line between them. The BB tech came out and looks like it will have to be replaced. He told me that Only LG, Zenith and some other brand where really good. I will be getting a replacement TV and will go with LG.
Side Note: I bought an LG 42" 720p LCD HDTV floor model from BB a week ago and three days later it spontaneously turns off after being on for 1 minute.
I think I will still go with LG though great picture.
I just wish BB offered the replacement plan on TV's (PRP) instead of just the PSP.:(
cigga24 01-26-08, 06:47 AM I opted to pay 200 more for the Sammy 5265f cause it was on sale. I'm not quite satisfied with it so i'm switching it out for the Pioneer 5080HD cause it came on sale for the same price. Tv should be here today.
nitebreed 02-01-09, 10:05 AM I am able to hook my computer up through vga. However when I try to hook it up through dvi it won't work. I called magnavox and they said that I needed a cable to go from dvi-i on the computer to dvi-d on the tv. I am able to get the dvi port to hook up to an adapter to hdmi and hook it to my directv with no issues. Any suggestions? I have an Visiontek ATI HD2600 Pro video card.
cigga24 02-02-09, 01:30 PM Dude dont waste your time trying to get pc to work with this tv through dvi. This set gave me such a headache and made me very frustated. I tried multiple cables, video cards and made tons of phone calls and internet searches. Trust me, leave it alone.:(
stiltman 11-14-09, 05:43 PM Excuse me for bumping and old thread, but I'm sure there are a lot of purchasers that can still get in on the replacement before there warrantt expires :)
I'm a last minute kinda guy :eek::D
This black friday is when my extended warranty expires
I too had the Vertical lines on the right side.
Switching from SD to HD would sometimes throw purple horizontal lines
Hooked up a HD-DVD player, no signal
Headphone jack doesn't work right (never did since day one)
Called BB the end of Oct
Repair guy came out a week later
He said I needed 2 of the main logic boards and the image board.
He order the parts and setup a return visit for the next week.
Image board, is back ordered to the 16th of this month
BB emailed me and said I can wait for the parts (they will never get it, I checked their distributors list. It takes a core first and they repair the core at $300) or I can opt for a Panny TC-P42X1 or a Samsung PN42B450B1D
Needless to say, who would want a repiared 2nd generation PDP when they can get a 12g for free.
Now I'm trying to figure out if I want the Panny or Samsung
