21 Additional HD Channels Added to Cox Line-Up in Hampton

Fort Monroe also Included in Channel Line-up Expansion

HD channels Provided at No Additional Cost to Customers

CHESAPEAKE, Va., May 22 /PRNewswire/ -- On May 22, Cox customers in Hampton will have access to an additional 21 high-definition channels. With these additions, customers can now receive up to 56 HD channels. U.S. Army base Fort Monroe is included in the expansion of service.

Also, Cox HD offerings are made available at no additional cost to customers -- this includes the numerous HD offerings found in FreeZone. HD channels, with their line-up designations, include the following:

1. BET HD (channel 739) 12. Lifetime Network HD (channel 709)
2. Bravo HD (channel 761) 13. MTV HD (channel 722)
3. Cartoon Network HD (channel 717) 14. Nickelodeon HD (channel 729)
4. CMT HD (channel 733) 15. Planet Green HD (channel 813)
5. CNBC HD (channel 725) 16. Sci-Fi HD (channel 740)
6. Comedy Central HD (channel 732) 17. Speed Channel HD (channel 763)
7. E! HD (channel 741) 18. Spike HD (channel 756)
8. Fox News Channel HD 19. USA HD (channel 718)
(channel 764) 20. Versus HD (channel 734)

"We are excited about our enhanced HD services in Hampton as well as on the Fort Monroe base. These changes reflect our commitment to be the most trusted provider in Hampton Roads. We work hard to give our customers the best service and value for their money; this is one reason we provide HD channels at no additional cost to our customers," said Gary McCollum, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Cox Hampton Roads.

The additional 21 HD channels also are available to customers in Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Gloucester, Poquoson, parts of Williamsburg, Newport News, West Point, New Kent, and King and Queen County.

Later this year, James City County, York County and other areas on the Peninsula will have access to these channels as Cox continues to enhance its hybrid-fiber based network.

To receive these additional HD channels, customers must have the appropriate level of service with Cox, a high-definition television, and HD receiver and/or CableCARD. (As an example, customers must already receive CNBC in standard definition in order to receive CNBC in HD.)

Finally, on May 22, York County and James City County will have access to Lifetime Network HD (channel 709) in place of Science Channel HD (channel 760). Science Channel HD will assume its prior line-up position, along with access to additional channels, after Cox completes its network enhancements in these communities.

From what I can read into the statements said by our local rep that posts to our local board this is the major reason why TWCHD is not being added yet to our market. I would expect that it is the same in other markets as well. Untill your local market gets upgraded to display the locals on the 8's, it wont be added.

I am in the same market and have not heard any news lately. Usually Ft. Smith gets an update then we follow about a month later. They should be adding more channels this summer so expect to hear something by August. That is just a guess, but it is based on what they have done before. The tend to add channels about 2x a year and we are due for more since they added some in January.

I wouldnt worry too much, it may have gotten delayed to sometime between July and September. In New England we just got the HBO2, Encore, Disney, and ABC Family last week. I am not expecting anything else new until at least September. These new channels went live with little fanfare or annoucements. We were lucky enough to get confirmation from a local Cox rep on the ones added on the 14th, but they tend to be tight lipped about other channels, until agreements are in place as to avoid an uproar if things get pushed.

Cox can't carry something that doesn't exist, and there's not exactly much incentive for the station to purchase the necessary equipment to receive it in HD and provide a fiber feed of it to Cox for the small amount of HD available and small number of viewers who would receive it. It's been done before in other small markets with major networks that have a significant draw for HD, e.g. Fox and the NFL, but I wouldn't hold my breath for a last-place netlet like MNT.

At least KPTM is smart and runs WWE Smackdown on Saturday's on KXVO which cox carries in HD.

And Cox Phoenix carries it on 709, and I'm sure a number of others carry it as well. MNT is a broadcast network and relies on a local station to fill the 156 hours a week not programmed by the network, so it's not like Cox could just pick up a national feed like a cable channel. Besides, outside of the aforementioned WWE Smackdown, there's very little in of interest in HD on MNT.

I have owned and loved TiVos since 2000. Thus, it will come as no surprise that I have been anxiously waiting for something to come out of the agreement that Cox and TiVo entered into years ago. I't s a good thing I didn't hold my breath because there is STILL no definitive word as to when, or even if, Cox customers are going to have some kind of TiVo, either hardware or software. I hate it because there is simply no DVR interface that is even in the same world with TiVo's. Trust me on this.

Depends on the city. In Phoenix HBO2 (779) is right below HBO (780) Encore is at 771 with a few non-premium channels between it and HBO2. However Encore is not a premium channel, so technically all of the Premium channels are grouped together in Phoenix.

Does anyone in the Las Vegas area get HBO On Demand in HD? The site claims they carry it however, I don't get it on my channel 1 On Demand listing. I called (twice) and they can't seem to give me a straight answer.

If they don't have it, that's fine but if it is actually available I would like to receive it.

That is not correct, they also had movies and other programs if I remember correctly not just the Sopranos.

Just last week for Cox New England we had an offering for HBO HD (Boxing) I cant remember which fight though. The listing for HBO HD is still there in our menu as well.

HBO did kill HBOHD On Demand sometime last year I believe, but it may be making a comeback.

Depends on the city. In Phoenix HBO2 (779) is right below HBO (780) Encore is at 771 with a few non-premium channels between it and HBO2. However Encore is not a premium channel, so technically all of the Premium channels are grouped together in Phoenix.

by encore i meant groupping it with other movie channels. I expect when Omaha finally launches more hd HBO2 will be 881 Encore to be 760 or 762.

This is the last SD channel I watch with regularity, and one of the few HD channels I'm really looking forward to.

Anyone know if Cox has announced any plans to carry? They carry all of the other NBC-Universal channels, so I mentioned it would be "easy" to add, contractually... ?

Cox Communications Inc. is adding 27 new high-definition cable channels to the Valley’s service area through August.

The company likely will have 70 HD channels by the end of summer.

“The No. 1 request from our customers is more HD options, so in response we are happy to launch this great lineup of unique channels in high definition,” said Ivan Johnson, vice president of communications and televideo for Cox Arizona.

Cox in Santa Barbara is up to 56 with the addition of Fox News, Comedy Central, and the others. And boy have they compressed the hell out of all of them. If Conan moves two inches to the left, it's macroblocking central.

Cox in Topeka Kansas is having the same problem. Fox News is the worst of the channels that I watch.

Cox in Topeka Kansas is having the same problem. Fox News is the worst of the channels that I watch.

Noticing this in Tulsa as well. Has me considering DirecTV. Personally, I'd rather have fewer HD channels that are actually watchable than a ton of channels with constant macroblocking.

I suppose it's because they are gradually changing as they free up bandwidth. Cox-Phoenix just started 24/7 coverage this week, but we don't know if it's just a fluke or permanent. The guide now contains a full week of data.

At least in Kansas, Cox does not actually carry FSN in HD. They have a side agreement to air the Royals games that are in HD but not the channel itself although I think the channel guide lists it as Fox Sports KC. They may make similar arrangements from time to time for other local events but I'm not sure they've done that.

I think it is the stupidest thing that I have to pay for the SD channels and have the Extended Cable package when I have a box on every TV in my house and watch nothing but 600-665 and On Demand. The idea of free HD would be nice as long as all you have to pay for is the receiver. I am fine to say that I am paying for the Extended Package but then let me pay $10 for a digital receiver and get the HD version for free. That is what free HD sounds like to me.

Except that the majority of people still don't have HD boxes and HD TV's so they need the SD channels. Cox is trying to help themselves with digital only SD channels by using SDV, but that has been a slow process.

It could if everyone were given a digital box. Cox has agreed to continue analog service until 2012, so there will be no bandwidth savings until then, except for the channels they delete from the analog tier of course. ;)

I think it is the stupidest thing that I have to pay for the SD channels and have the Extended Cable package when I have a box on every TV in my house and watch nothing but 600-665 and On Demand.

I guess what you are saying here is that you do not want to have to subscribe to the higher cost digital service in order to get HD channels. IMHO, "Free HD" borders on false advertising. If I could order basic cable, pay for an HD box, and receive local HD channels at no extra charge, that would be free HD. If I could subscribe to Expanded Cable, pay for an HD box, and get the HD versions of those channels at no extra charge, that would also be free HD. However, when I have to subscribe to higher-priced Digital Cable, with many channels I care nothing about, that is NOT free HD.

FWIW, I have heard of people who ordered Digital Cable, got the HD box, and then downgraded to Expanded Cable. Supposedly, because they still had the HD box, the HD versions of the expanded lineup were still available.

DoubleDAZ-You explained exactly what I was trying to say. I see billboards that say "Free HD" and I just laugh because what I'm paying is no where near to free.

An HD only tier would be awesome. I think more people would sign-up for HD if all you had to pay for was the box and none of this Cox claiming to have free HD. We bought my grandparents a very nice Sony LCD tv at Christmas and the only HD they have is OTA because in their mind the cost doesn't out weight the benefit. If only Cox had some local competition and they were forced to take into consideration customer satisfaction.

Ok, but you have to remember that Cox HAS to pay for all those channels based solely on the number of subscribers they have, not on the number of subscribers who want a given channel. That is not the "choice" of Cox, that is a "demand" of the channels. That is, even if you don't watch Syfy SD, the only way Cox can offer Syfy HD to you is as a "free" extra for subscribing to Syfy SD.

It's not unlike Disney HD. The ONLY way you can get Disney HD is to pay for ABC SD/HD and all the various ESPN SD/HD's. Unfair? You bet, but hardly the fault of cable. Until viewers start hounding channels and channel owners that they want the system to change, you will continue to receive "free" HD for a premium price. :)

Probably because they failed to meet so many of their announced dates. I know in Phoenix they announced that they would have 80 HD channels by the end of 2008. They might finally meet that goal of 80 by the end of August (2009).

Thanks for the update. Cox OKC has most but not all of those. Instead of the Big Ten Network HD, we have Fox Sports Southwest HD. We also have Hallmark and Lifetime. We have had MSNBC HD for some time. I didn't realize that a Turner Classic Movies HD feed was in the cards. I really wish that we would get that. Even upconverted DVD would be a VAST improvement over the SD we get know, which is unwatchable on my 60 inch Pioneer Kuro.

I hear you. HD service in this area does not seem to be a high priority. Almost all of the HD recordings that were on my DVR would have a least one instance of pixelation. I finally got fed up with Cox Gulf Coast and switched to Directv. PQ is much better than Cox. I had been a Cox customer for over 20 years but they lost me due to their poor product.

Usually though with most beta testing there is an NDA signed, so people probably wont post about it here especially if they are testing equipment\services.

Cox Communications will launch seven new high-definition channels to its Hampton Roads cable television lineup Thursday.

Most Cox customers on the Peninsula will begin receiving Bio HD (Channel 828), Encore HD (Channel 810), Fox Business Channel HD (Channel 818), MLB Network HD (Channel 814), NBA TV HD (Channel 833), Pay Per View Events Channel HD (Channel 701) and The Weather Channel HD (Channel 724).

Cox subscribers in James City and York counties will not receive the stations until later this year.

Yep, definitely looks like Tucson and Phoenix are on the same channel release schedule. That wasn't the case last year, where Tucson would often see channels added a few months after Phoenix.

Its better then the old system, but still not "there" yet. I do like the outlay and the progress bar. I also like that each OD section has its own channel now (in the 1000's for us) which means you can directly access you OD selection without having to navigate the entire menu.

I dont like though that it drops you randomly into the selection so you may have to search around for the content you are looking for. A few times I thought there was no content, when it was just the section I was in.

I am looking forward to the HD upgrade menu upgrade and hopefully the NDS new system in the future. THis new system is far more manageable then the old one, so it will tide people over nicely IMO.

the hd channel is comming it mentioned in the release.

The addition of these markets to Cox Cable Systems coincides with a multi-year
agreement between Outdoor Channel and Cox Communications that renews their

partnership for Outdoor Channel's standard definition (SD), high-definition

Phoenix (Cox) - Weird, they added BIGTO on 641 in HD. BIGTO is the only HD Channel in the 600's. Usually showing the same content as BTNHD on 777. That brings us up to 74 HD Channels as of today.

Yes, i have 3 of these with cox cable cards installed and they work great. Depending on your area you may need to check with your cox rep to make sure they are sending through the TVGOS signal that sets up the programming and schedule. As for the cable cards it allows you to get all the HD programming except for PPV. If you know for sure that TVGOS is being passed on through your local Cox network or if one of the local TV stations is passing on the TVGOS signal then it should work fine. Most areas are reporting that the CBS affiliate is doing it. For our area in NW Arkansas Cox is passing on the signal as a service to it's customers since the local CBS affiliate is not doing this.

I hear you. HD service in this area does not seem to be a high priority. Almost all of the HD recordings that were on my DVR would have a least one instance of pixelation. I finally got fed up with Cox Gulf Coast and switched to Directv. PQ is much better than Cox. I had been a Cox customer for over 20 years but they lost me due to their poor product.

I wish I could get Directv. They came out and told me that I do not have a line of sight anywhere in my yard due to tall pine trees. They said that I might get a signal but as soon as it gets cloudy or the wind blows the trees that I would loose signal. They also said that if I wanted they would proceed but that I would be stuck in my contract even if reception failed. So I said no.

In answer to your first question, Cox comes out and has to do an installation of the cable card. They do charge a fee. Sometimes they come out expecting to install it in a TIVO and I explain, no it is a Sony box, and the setup is much easier for the techs than for a Tivo.

The channels are displayed in a schedule with the channels and programs listed. You can either enter the channels manually, like a regular cable box, like 707, etc. to get the HD channels. Or you can use the TV Guide grid that comes up and select the channel you want to view. you also set up recording on this screen.

Last night (Wednesday)the "Jay Leno" show on Cox Cleveland the HD channel went into a series of ads that started at about 10:25PM and continued non-stop until 11PM. The SD channel played the show.

Cox Cleveland also announced some added HD channels, starting October 1st.

Cox Communications will offer the ESPN360.com online video service to broadband subscribers nationwide beginning Sept. 30.

The 24-hour Internet TV service, which offers more than 3,500 live sports events per year, will be available to all Cox high-speed residential and business Internet customers at www.cox.com/espn360 for no additional charge. Nationwide, Cox had about 4 million broadband subscribers as of the end of 2008.

ESPN360 now reaches more than two-thirds of all broadband users in the U.S., with Comcast added into the fold in May. Other providers that offer ESPN360 include Verizon Communications, AT&T, Suddenlink Communications, Insight Communications and RCN.

"Making ESPN360.com available for free to our high-speed Internet customers is just one more way Cox is committed to providing the best value," Cox Northern Virginia general manager Janet Barnard said in a statement.

ESPN charges distributors a per-subscriber fee to offer the service. The model, which mirrors traditional cable TV carriage, has drawn criticism from the American Cable Association, which has argued that charging sub fees for Internet content could drive up the retail cost of broadband access.

ESPN360 lets users view up to 15 simultaneous live events, toggling between games in a main viewing window. The service includes events from the NBA, NCAA men's and women's basketball, NCAA college football, FIFA World Cup events and global qualifiers, among other content.

Separately, Cox announced that it will increase the download speeds of its Preferred and Premier subscribers in its Northern Virginia service area, effective Sept. 29. The Preferred tier will increase to 15 Mbps down and 2 Mbps up (20/2.5 with PowerBoost) compared with 10/2 before, and Premier will be 25/3 (30/3.5 with PowerBoost) compared with 20/3 prior.

In Northern Virginia, Cox faces competition from Verizon's FiOS Internet and TV. Earlier this summer, the MSO introduced the "Ultimate" 50-Mbps downstream DOCSIS 3.0 service.

I had a big problem with getting the CableCARDs in my TiVo Series3 to read ESPNU HD at first. I spent 30 or 40 minutes on the phone with one of Cox OKC's tech support guys. He reauthorized my cards several times and I rebooted by box but ESPNU still wouldn't come up. Finally in a last desperate attempt to do something that might work, I had my TiVo checkout the signal strength of Channel 718, to which ESPNU HD has been assigned. Voila! ESPNU came up. My TiVo had tuned in to all of the other newly added HD channels immediately. Go figure.

The definition you get depends on the channel and program. I did notice the list isn't updated yet but you can add Cartoon Network HD, The Science Channel HD, Planet Green HD, Disney HD, Family Channel HD and BET HD to the HD list. There might have been a couple of premiums HDs added too.

You should be able to pick up the HD locals only via QAM without a box and with the basic package.

If you want all of the HD channels though you must get the Digital package (or whatever they are calling it now). You will also need the HD box as Cox scrambles thier HD lineup (minus HD locals). THis is the same everywhere so no matter where you go you will need a box. Remember though that included in the 60-70 HD channels are the premiums which will cost you extra as well.

In some instances you might have some hardware that won't tune the QAM channels. I have Sony & Samsung TV's and a DVDR that tune the local HDs fine with their QAM tuner, but a Vizio TV that will find the channels during a scan but only show a blue screen when I turn to them. Before Cox started shuffling around the QAM channels the Vizio worked fine, but hasn't for the past year.

Cox OKC has periodically changed the channel designations for its in-the-clear HD feeds of local channels. For some reason, though, they have remained the same for some months. As somebody else noted earlier, cable companies do everything they can to keep you from getting HD locals without a cable box and an HD subscription. Although they are required by law to make HD locals available on basic cable, they are not required to tell you where they are. That's why they go out of their way to hide out the locations of HD locals.

I have read online that they do not and that they try to tell you that it requires a professional but then again I was also reading that they do the same for the cable box. I went and picked up the cable box myself and my friend said that they let him install his own cable card.

That is crappy that they would try to hide the local HD channels but oh well. I have the box for all of the channels in HD anyway but I disconnected it and scanned to see if I could pick up the local HD channels and my tv did not find them.

The cable box is a Scientific Atlantic Explorer 4240HDC and it is not horrible but a pain in the butt because it turns the channels too slow for me. I need to setup my tv remote to control the cable box if I can so that way I only need one remote.

Nope, or at least not in Santa Barbara. I had one installed in a TiVo HD in July and nearly begged to be able to pick the M-Card up from the local office and install it on my own and the refused. Instead, I had to pay $59.95 for them to have a technician stick in a card and leave three minutes later.

The Scientific Atlanta DVRs used by Cox seem to be decently built and reasonably stable. My complaint about them is that Cox OKC uses SARA software on them. SARA software is hands down the weakest DVR software on the market. With SARA software it is impossible to craft a search for programming with any precision. It also has many other failings but they are too numerous to get into here. That's why my primary DVRs have been TiVos since 2000. I still have an SA 8240HDC, which I rent from Cox, but use it only when both tuners on my TiVo are busy or when I want to buy a PPV program. TiVos can't handle those.

No, they will not let you self install. It takes a trained professional to skillfully insert a cable card, call the Cox digital desk and read the numbers from your screen.

And yes, they will charge you for a truck roll.

That $59.95 (29.95 in AZ) has to cover the subsequent truck rolls to correct issues with Tivo and Cablecards. A co-worker has had Cox out at least 5 times to replace bad Cablecards. I am sure that there are others that have never had an issue, but its the luck of the draw.

Cox OKC also requires that CableCARDs be installed by their techs. After having been a witness to this being done four times, I am ready to concede that Cox may have a point. The biggest problem with CableCARD installation is getting the card serial number to the headend, along with some information from the TiVo's diagnostic screens, so that the headend can send hits to authorize the cards. This really isn't a trivial exercise and, in my experience at least, getting the cards to accept the hits from the headend almost never goes smoothly.

I don't think that Cox OKC's policy concerning CableCARDs is a cynical money grab because they make no such requirement with their own DVRs. All you have to do is go to a Cox office, get the box, connect it, and call tech support to help you get it configured. I have found that getting a DVR setup is never as troublesome as getting CableCARDs installed and authorized.

I just checked Cox's TV channel lineup and saw this announcement:

On or after November 17, 2009 Cox will be making changes to your channel lineup. You will notice a new channel number for your favorite HD channels as well as a couple of changes within the Limited and Expanded Cable sections.

On or after November 24, 2009 Cox is adding an additional 12 HD channels to your HD lineup. These new HD channels are also listed on the November 17 lineups below: Investigation Discovery HD, Independent Film Channel HD, BBC America HD, WE HD, G4 HD, FUSE HD, ESPNU HD, ESPNews HD, Tennis Channel HD, Starz Edge HD, History International HD and Sundance Channel HD.

The changes are mostly that all On-Demand channels will be in the 1000s and all HD channels will be in the 2000s. Another nice change, HD channels are now just 2000 more than their SD counterparts, so you will actually be able to find the HD channel you're looking for! For example, Comedy Central HD will be 2058 because Comedy Central SD is 58 and BBC America HD will be 2208 because BBC America SD is 208.
