I live in West Texas and I have Cox Cable. We have HBO, Shotime, Starz, INHD 1 & 2, ESPN, Universal, PBS, Discovery, and CBS. I was wondering if it is like this for all Cox subscribers and if anybody knows when Cox will get more HD channels? I just wish I had more HD selections!

EDIT: I agreed to add this link to my list of the HD Channels Cox has national agreements with. Dave (DoubleDAZ) will continue to update the list as he hears of new agreements. If the hyperlink doesn't work, please use the link below:

I have also heard rumors they might be finally adding StarzHD soon. It also has been said we are going to get National Geographic HD when it starts up. I just wish they would give us UniversalHD and CinemaxHD.

As for TNTHD. It is indeed very cool to have if you are a basketball fan(since ESPNHD sucks balls when it comes to offering basketball in HD). Overall I would say 50% of there programing isnt HD, yet they list 100% of there programs that way. 45% is really HD programming while the remaining 5% is a weird practice were the middle of the screen is fine but the sides seem stretched.

It depends on your local channels. If they do not broadcast the networks in HD, you will not get the networks in HD on Cox. Apparently, only your local CBS affiliate broadcasts in HD.

The COX guy who did my installation informed me that PBS doesn't do HD(it's not carried locally by COX). I told him he should check OTA.:D

If COX does not carry one of your locals in HD, it's still a good idea to check and make sure it isn't in HD via OTA.

Yet they hold us hostage to buy they digital tier in order to receive the HD channels...not that I mind, but it would be great to get more HD content already!!

The Feb 2009 date has nothing to do with ESPN2-HD. It is the date the broadcast stations have to turn off their analog station. It has nothing to do with cable channels.

Cebridge has bought a large area of Cox in this part of the country, the transaction to become final around April, I believe.

Anybody know what to expect as Cebridge takes over? Maybe more HD channels(Cox's lineup here is paltry: No TNTHD, no ESPN2HD, no PBSHD)? I can't get any info from Cox; maybe they just aren't being told anything.

You guys are all lucky, the COX HD lineup where I am has no FOX or CBS, meaning the whole reason I got a nice big flat screen HDTV (to watch football) is null and void since I don't GET the two NFL channels in HD, and the normal SD versions look WORSE on the HDTV. So I basically paid for a bigger, HDTV to watch football in WORSE quality than I could have on my 27" standard def TV. We do get ABC in HD though, so I guess I can get a few NCAA football games in HD, which is a little pick me up.

Do your local Fox and CBS stations broadcast in HD? If not, then Cox cannot carry them in HD.

Cox has always picked up the local stations here very shortly after they get their HD signal up and running.

The NFL Network is new within the past couple of weeks. Note that we do not have either PBS HD or Fox HD. I can't explain PBS HD's absence but the reason Cox doesn't carry Fox is that the local Fox station's owner, Sinclair Communications, insists on being paid for the privilege. All other local station owners allow Cox to carry their HD signals without charge.

Not having ESPN2 HD is frustrating, as is the relative paucity of HD channels. Frankly, if Cox did not also provide my Internet and telephone services i would probably dump them for D*.

Given the NFL Network's strong arm tatics that seem to have blown up in their face, until the NFL comes off their high horse, I doubt it.

Quite frankly, anyone that would drop cable for 4 NFL games has already most likely done so and is on D* for ST. The cable companies know this and certainly are not sweating it.

1. Nope. Occasionally they will announce new channels a bit in advance in a mailer, but it will only apply to your local market.

2. It may be in your area.

3. CSR talk, but the time frame is long enough that I'd be surprised if it wasn't true.

Whoa what a stroke of luck! I'm scrolling through my guide this evening and what do I see? ESPN2-HD!! No announcement or anything... just there it was. Now I won't miss out on any big college football/basketball games in HD.

BTW I'm in Baton Rouge, LA... so our updated lineup is as follows:

703: NBC
705: ABC
706: FOX
707: CBS
710: WB
712: PBS
728: TNT-HD

You know, I've had my issues with Cox in the past. But honestly they're making it hard to complain lately between the comparitively full HD lineup as well as the recent 7mb/12mb speed bump for the internet.

703: NBC
705: ABC
706: FOX
707: CBS
710: WB
712: PBS
728: TNT-HD
735: ESPN-HD
736: ESPN2-HD
746: Discovery-HD
750: Universal-HD
772: MHD
780: INHD
781: INHD2

790: HBO-HD
791: Showtime-HD
792: Starz-HD

You know, I've had my issues with Cox in the past. But honestly they're making it hard to complain lately between the comparitively full HD lineup as well as the recent 7mb/12mb speed bump for the internet.

Don't lose hope my brothers! This might be part of a larger roll-out. Has anyone else gotten ESPN2 just recently?

I called Cox just a few min... ago to say thanks for finally adding ESPN2HD. Now I'd like to get National Geographic HD and HDNet.

If it's a bandwidth thing, turn off INHD2 now... jeez.

TNT-HD 725
MHD 727
Disc-HD 732

Yea, I gotta believe I'll get it within the next 3-4 weeks...

I noticed that some of the other regions, most notably San Diego who is a market comparable to Fairfax (250,000 subs), they said something about Dec 13 on their homepage?

So perhaps that's a good ballpark for me.

I sure hope so...

The same is happening here in the NorthEast Cox Market (RI, CT). CBS and Fox are owned by LIN and also ABC in CT is owned by LIN too. It has been over 3 years since they started to have meetings with LIN about agreements. The LIN lawyers and people just visited our local Cox here in RI about 2 weeks ago and my uncle said things went pretty well, now they are talking on a national level. Also DirecTV just launched locals here in RI and they dont carry either CBS or FOX in HD, so its just not COX that LIN hates too......

Can you keep us up to date on this? I am from RI and i'm sick of watching the Pat's game on standard def.

Well Hopefully with the on coming of FIOS in RI (should be early 2007) since most of the procedures have been gone through I believe they are just waiting for their franchise Cox will get off their butts and offer more HD content for the New England Area I swear it seems like we are stuck in the stone ages as far as Cable goes, At least I can get FOX and CBS OTA :). Hopefully they will expand in our Area as FIOS has a VERY competitive package as far as price and what they are offering from what I see right now they blow Cox out of the water in the New England Area as far as offerings go............

Cox Communication HDTV Lineup As Of December 13th, 2006 (FOr Hampton Roads)

703 - CBS HD, I only use it to watch Concerts, Sports and the "Awards Shows" (ie Grammies and What not)

711 - ESPN2 HD (NEW!) - Again, the sports..... and NASCAR next season in HD, and whatnot

712 - ESPN HD - Sports Center, lol, If there is a game on in HD i Dont get, they usually have the highlights in HD

715 - PBS HD - I Havent even tuned to the channel, waste of space in my honest opinion

721 - HBO HD - Heard Good things, but my DVR is Spoofed and wont let me access it (yes I pay for it, the box is bugged, tech said i need to replace it, but havent had time to)

722 - MTV HD - Awesome for concerts and Awards Shows (VMAs etc), need to get some more concerts (ie linkin park etc) im tied of watching the same 4 or 5 concerts, and the same rotation of upsampled videos (though they look tons better than MTV/MTVhits SD (528x480 wtf, that isnt even NTSC res)

731 - Discovery HD - Man Oh Man, American Chopper and a bunch of other shows in HD....

751 - Max HD - Same as HBOHD (Bugged Box)

761 - Universal HD - Awesome Stuff, Battle Star Galactica and Stuff In HD! and Movies

766 - TNT HD - Watched Nascar Stuff on it, a well as Movies...

769 - SHOWTime HD - Same As HBOHD (Bugged Box)

795 - INHD - When They Added ESPN2, INHD 2 Was Removed Because InDemand is Terminating the INHD2 Channel and Merging the Programming into 1 Channel

LIN TV Corp. and Cox Communications Ink Digital Carriage Deal
Cox subscribers in LIN TV’s markets will have access to top-rated news, sports and entertainment programs in HDTV

PROVIDENCE, RI and ATLANTA, GA (March 1, 2007) – LIN TV Corp. (NYSE: TVL) and Cox Communications today announced that the companies have reached an agreement for retransmission consent of broadcast stations in both analog and in high-definition.

“We are pleased with the outcome of our negotiations,” said Vincent L. Sadusky, president and chief executive officer of LIN TV Corp. “Our stations are leaders in their markets and we’ve made substantial investments to bring our viewers high definition digital programming. The agreement reflects fair value to both parties and is in the best interest of the consumer.”

“LIN stations are important to our mutual customers, and Cox is pleased to finalize an agreement providing for long-term carriage of both the analog and digital signals of those stations in the applicable Cox markets,” said Bob Wilson, senior vice president of programming for Cox.

The deal enables hundreds of thousands of viewers to watch LIN TV’s award-winning news, sports and entertainment programs in high-definition from the affiliate stations of WALA-TV (FOX) and WBPG-TV (CW) in the Mobile, Alabama – Pensacola, Florida DMA; WAVY-TV (NBC) and WVBT-TV (FOX) in the Norfolk, Virginia DMA; WNAC-TV (FOX) and WPRI-TV (CBS) in the Providence, Rhode Island DMA; WWLP-TV (NBC) in the Springfield, Massachusetts DMA, and WTNH-TV (ABC) and WCTX-TV (MyNetworkTV) in the Hartford - New Haven, Connecticut DMA.

The agreement also grants Cox Communications the right to LIN TV’s locally produced content for Video on Demand (VOD) and a new “Local Weather Station” will be available for viewers in Hartford and Florida’s Gulf Coast, featuring the stations’ trusted meteorologists delivering hyper-local weather conditions, forecasts and live, local Doppler radar. “Local Weather Stations” offer continuous local weather information, up-to-the-minute, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Cox Cable subscribers in Rhode Island and Norfolk currently have this resource with the WPRI Eyewitness News Pinpoint Weather Station and the WAVY Weather Station.

Other cable systems like Comcast and Time Warner are starting to phase out analog signals over their cable systems to allow them to broadcast more digital stations. They recently did this in Chicago and on Long Island. Has anyone heard that Cox may do the same in some of it's areas? I suspect they will all do this once we get to the analog shutoff date in Feb. 2009. See the article at the Multichannel website under the "channels" tab where it says "cable operators" - you will see two articles there related to the above stories.

Has anyone heard from Cox on their plans on how they expect to make the digital switch, if it is going to be done all at once or gradually? If everyone will be required to have a digital set-top box and/or if we can use our QAM tuners (now being built into most new HD sets) to get most digital or HD cable channels? Anyone heard anything on these areas related to COX? Does anyone know who to contact at Cox that could answer these type of questions?

I had service call at my house on Saturday, and was told that in CT Cox will have digital simulcast starting in July. This means that they will be able to shut off most of analog by 2009.

pbenjamin
04-23-07, 05:30 PM
Someone will have a better answer from a technical standpoint but what has happened with Cox in Phoenix is that all of the analogs are now reproduced as digital stations. If you have a digital STB, and you tune to Channel 5, you get digital. If you tune Channel 5 on an analog cable-ready TV, though, you still get the analog. The number of analog channels, meanwhile, is being gradually reduced. Now they are limited to 02-66, 70, 96-99 while digital-only channels are popping up in the 80s.

dmix00
05-18-07, 12:13 PM
I caught a Cox Technician who was fixing my neighbors cable this week and asked him what would happen when the transition to digital is complete in 2009. He said that COX plans to continue to offer analog channels so all our older TVs will still work without a converter box. However, COX will reduce the number of analog channels (he did not know how many they would have). We can get the local channels on QAM, but that will be it. We will need a cable card or COX digital box to get any other HD/Digital channels (both now and when the transition is complete. This is for the NW Arkansas area, but I imagine this will be true of most areas that COX serves. He also said that they plan to offer more channels and that they can send 12 digital signals over the same bandwith that one analog channel would take. So as they phase out some analog, more digital will be offered.

In my area(Fairfax/NOVA), Cox is moving some of our HD channels around; hopefully to add more to the lineup. In Fairfax, all channels are now digital with the exception of one PBS channel(for TVGOS) and one local gov't channel. I believe by September, we should all be seeing some kind of improvement in the lineup, as the D*/E*(Dish) line up will boost dramatically. I'm hoping for TBS HD to come around for the playoffs, but with Cox's reputation, it might the day after the World Series...

"We are constantly seeking to add to our HD lineup. You can look

to seeing more HD programming on Cox's Channel lineup in the future.
As
far as exact content and timelines we just dont have that information
to
give out."

Whoever wrote that outa be in politics..lol

This was sent to me July 10th (took them about 10 days to answer my email). I live in Southeast Kansas and right now I am kinda up in the air as to whether I would be better served with dish network or to stay with cox. Number of HD channels definitely favors dish network at this time. Would keep cox internet but really indecisive about whether to give up the cable.

That’s hopeful, I just wish that Cox OKC would add 10 new HD stations. They did add A&E HD earlier this month but that’s the first new one I can remember them adding in awhile.

I guess we should count our blessings, though. My son is a Time Warner Milwaukee subscriber and I just learned that UHD and MOJO are extra cost options, not included in their standard HD package. Now that stinks!

I owuld expect the NFL Network to be added in time for the start of the regular season...was available on a `trial' basis last fall...

Cox has added NFL Network to their Baton Rouge system. When they start the regular season games in late November, I was told by Cox that they will carry them on MOJOHD.

I have been wondering the same thing. Cox OKC has 20 HD channels at the moment and there was a report in the Oklahoma City thread that they intend to add 4 new ones in September, plus a lot more in the next few months. What I am really hoping for is that SciFi, which is going HD at the end of the month, will be one of the first 4 that Cox OKC adds.

I don't know about nationally but a local Cox insider here has said publicly and to me privately that here in Hampton Roads we can expect another 30 - 50 HD channels by the end of the year. HD VOD is also planned before the end of the year. I am cautiously optimistic.

Our HD VoD is really pretty infrequent and more like if it's on atm you can watch it. As for a link, I can't provide that BUT when I picked up two HD boxes at the local Cox, I inquired about any new HD channels coming to our area and the lady at the desk as well as her boss? said they would be adding ~4 new channels by the end of the month. She wouldn't say which ones they were only that none of them were The Golf Channel HD.

No idea what channels, I don't think they know yet as they are working on carriage agreements. They're picking up bandwidth by eliminating some analog channels and digitally simulcasting others. They are also using SDV (switched digital video) which sends a channel only when it is requested.

Cox Targets 50 HD Channels by Year-End
Cable Operator Readying Campaign to Take On DirecTV
By Todd Spangler Multichannel News 6/20/2007

Orlando, Fla. -- Cox Communications president Pat Esser said the operator is aiming to have the capacity to offer 50 HD channels across its systems by the end of 2007, and it hopes to double that to 100 by the end of 2009.

“We’re seeing an explosion in interest [from subscribers], and I think we have to get ready for that,” Esser said, speaking on a CEO roundtable here at the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers’ Cable-Tec Expo 2007.

Esser said Cox recently revised its goals for the number of HD channels it would be able to deliver. The operator will get there using a combination of bandwidth-optimization tools and techniques, including system upgrades, retiring analog channels, statistical multiplexing of HD signals and switched digital video, he said.

“I’ve asked Chris [Bowick, chief technology officer of Cox] and his team to find the capacity to offer 50 HD channels by the end of this year, going into 2008,” Esser said. “Whether we do or don’t offer that many channels, I want to have the capacity to do that.”

What Esser didn’t say explicitly is that Cox -- along with the rest of the cable industry -- is looking to blunt the effect of DirecTV’s HD hypermarketing push. Backed by aggressive TV spots, the direct-broadcast operator is promising “a future of 150 HD channels.”

According to Esser, Cox will soon launch a Pepsi Challenge-style marketing campaign that will compare the quality of Cox’s HD picture against satellite. “The industry just did a taste test … [and] consumers thought our product was better,” said Esser, who declined to provide further details.

Comcast last month kicked off a similar campaign, citing a survey that found that two-thirds of consumers preferred Comcast’s HDTV to satellite. DirecTV promptly sued Comcast, alleging false advertising and deceptive trade practices.

Asked about the DirecTV suit, Esser replied, “Well, that’s the response if you want to suppress the information … You don’t want to let it get out.”

Esser did acknowledge that historically, DBS operators “got a product jump on us with digital and DVRs [digital-video recorders].” But he added that satellite growth has slowed, and that what’s driven growth for the sector is reseller partnerships with telephone companies.

OK. Let us all be optimistic (unrealistic?) and say that Cox implements a number of HD channels by year end.

What are they going to do about a DVR strategy? As a sports fan the 120 GB drives does not cut it. I can save maybe a couple of HD ball games and an HD show, but thats about it. I love coming home late after work and sitting down with a beer to watch the game only to see the "Could not Record Disk Full" message.

I expressed my concern to Cox and got on a waiting list for the 6416 although I am not sure how big of a difference that extra 40 GB will make. I know many of us Cox customer can purchase our own Tivo boxes, but the cable card nightmares that I am reading about does not give me the warm and fuzzy.

Football season is "a-coming" and I am trying to decide whether to stick it out with Cox or investigate the Verizon or Satellite options.

Has anyone read about a DVR strategy from Cox in regards to hard disk capacity? The last time I talked to Cox (today) they told me they were waiting for Motorola. That could be a long wait.

The DVR storage issue is easy. Just get a 8300 model and purchase an external hard drive. Western Digital MyDVR Expander is the new one out. Just plug it and go!

Absolutely. The SA 8300 series appears to have this issue licked from a storage perspective.

Unfortunately the SA DVR boxes are not available to Cox RI customers. The DVR box here is the Motorola 6412. The 6412 has an eSATA port, but it is not enabled. I have not heard of an equivalent DVR Expander product for the 6412.

Buying brand new boxes for the millions of digital subscribers would be expensive. It would also break all the "digital cable ready" TVs out there. Furthermore, it would require that MPEG4 encoders be purchased for every channel on every headend. Cable doesn't have enough of a bandwidth crunch to make any of that worthwhile. Cox will keep turning off analog channels to make room, and will continue on with their upgrades to 860 and 1000MHz systems. Down the road, SDV will provide some bandwidth relief as well.

Cox Gears Up HD Boost With Switched Digital Video

Operator Plans to Offer More High-Definition Channels With BigBand’s System

By Todd Spangler -- Multichannel News, 8/21/2007 9:00:00 PM

To shoot more high-definition programming to subscribers, Cox Communications has begun rolling out switched digital video systems from BigBand Networks in its Northern Virginia market and expects to deploy the technology in its other systems later this year.

The technology should help Cox reach the HDTV goals set by president Pat Esser, who wants the multisystem operator to be able to offer at least 50 HD channels across all systems by the end of 2007 and then double that to 100 by the end of 2009.

Cox vice president of video engineering James Kelso said in a statement that the BigBand system will let the cable company “dramatically expand programming -- particularly high-definition channels.”

“We’re pleased with our tests of the BigBand SDV solution, particularly with the ease with which we’ve been able to integrate it with other components,” Kelso continued. “We’re eager to begin leveraging this technology for the benefit of our customers by delivering even more programming choices.”

Cox did not disclose any particular HD channels it expects to offer using SDV. But in general, adding more high-definition programming has been a competitive imperative for all cable operators as DirecTV continues the march toward a 100-channel HD lineup by year-end.

Switched digital video works by delivering channels over a cable network only when a subscriber requests them. That allows operators to deliver more channels in the same amount of bandwidth, on the assumption that not all the channels will be viewed simultaneously.

Cox will use BigBand’s SDV system with both Motorola and Scientific Atlanta set-top boxes--a proof point that BigBand isn’t tied to any particular environment, according to Biren Sood, the company’s VP and general manager of cable video products for North America.

“There’s been some discussion about who’s open and who’s not,” Sood said. “We think this demonstrates the openness of our solution.”

Cox is the third major cable operator to publicly acknowledge using BigBand’s SDV. Cablevision Systems earlier this year completed deploying the system across its entire footprint, and Time Warner Cable has targeted switched digital video for more than half its divisions this year, after first launching commercially in its Austin market last year.

Comcast, meanwhile, is in the midst of testing out various SDV systems in trials in Denver and New Jersey. Last month it picked a universal edge quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) platform from Arris designed to deliver either SDV, video-on-demand or high-speed data services over the same infrastructure.

I wouldn't hold your breath. A Hearst-Argyle affiliate in Omaha Nebraska (KETV) pulled their ABC HD signal from Cox Communiactions in Omaha back in August 2006 due to a transmission dispute. It is still off the air on Cox and I now hear that if there is not an agreement by the end of this month (Sept), they will be pulling the analog signal on the cable system as well. Apparently KETV was letting Cox still have the analog signal since they were negotiating in good faith. It appears to me that this is another pressure tactic especially since Football and Fall TV is getting into gear. Customers will be upset with Cox, but really should be upset with Hearst-Argyle as well.

I have no connection with Hearst-Argyle and none with Cox, either, other than being a Cox subscriber. Still, I believe that Hearst-Argyle is most at fault in this dispute because they are demanding millions of dollars from Cox for retransmission rights that most network affiliates provide for nothing. Cox settled a similar disagreement with Sinclair Communications after Sinclair reduced its demands to a reasonable level. It seems to me that Hearst-Argyle is acting like a dog in the manger so everybody should understand that before decrying Cox’s refusal to submit to extortion.

Cox OKC uses SA 8300HD boxes. I assume that they will soon deploy SA’s CableCARD version, the 8300HDC.

The main problem with the SA boxes is that they use SARA software, which is limited and primitive. Worse, SA boxes are incompatible with the TiVo software Cox has made a deal with TiVo to roll out to their company owned Motorola boxes.

The SARA software is so awful that I decided to replace one of my 8300HDs with a TiVo Series3 HD DVR last January. Doing so made no economic sense but I still do not regret having done it.

The hardware on the SA 8300HD boxes is much better than their SARA software operating system. They are HDMI enabled.

vegggas – Your link is fixed now, thanks. It’s good to see your post here because I seldom post to the 8300HD thread since I got a TiVo S3 so I hardly ever see your stuff these days.

I got a postcard from Cox OKC last week that hinted at some of what the Infinera press release addressed. The card said that Cox is upgrading “in your neighborhood” and will be adding new HD channels. There is no firm information yet as to which channels those may be.

vegggas
09-12-07, 11:50 AM
The neighborhood upgrades are different and reflect local bandwidth upgrades to 860Mhz or 1Ghz. Cox is either already transmitting almost everything as data or soon will be (including analog channels reconverted back at the local node) nationally. The Infera network will allow them to easily share national channels across the nations headends using a single point of encoding and processing at a much better quality and rate. Instead of having a mid range sat receiver decoder, processor, then QAM encoder at each HE for HBO, they can do a single point ultra high end system and then transmit that data to every headend ultimately saving space (better encoding) for more channels and having better quality than today.

In reality the only things I am personally missing out on is some football and one prime time show. I will watch the show on the web if I have to.
Thanks to my TiVo S3, I have been insulated from Hearst-Argyle’s greediness. The S3 has combination HD cable and HD OTA tuners and handles OTA channels in exactly the same way as it does cable channels. Thus, I can see what ABC has on tap and record it in HD OTA just as easily as I can find programming and record channels that Cox carries.

from what I hear and read when they pulled the HD signal off Cox it's because HA thinks since Cox charges a fee to rent a HD converter they should pay large amounts of money for a free signal.

That is their statement but as I said in my emails to KETV and Hearst-Argyle, I don't pay for a converter box just for an ABC affiliate. In fact, the only things I am missing are some college football games and one prime time show. You can watch most prime time shows on the Internet now and if I need to I will go to a local bar to watch football.

I should look into this since I was considering an OTA tuner anyway. Does this just work with a cable card from Cox? Will it allow PPV use?

OK, now to highlight a sentence from KETV's response. I decided not to include the whole canned BS response. It's pretty much the same as what's on the web sites.

Cox arguing with so many different companies needs to end. It's why everyone I know down here are switching away.

Their spout with CBS/Fox in the last few months has costs then a LOT of subscribers especially when the Saints were involved.

Cox may in fact be "right" but it is costing them dearly

Which is exactly why people should be putting the pressure on Hearst-Argyle and not Cox. People leaving Cox for these reasons are going to help cause cable rates to go up. That sentence I highlighted just shows that they are trying to bully Cox and it's subscribers into doing what they want. Then when it happens again with another company and another, guess what? Rates will keep going up.

Bottom line is rates are bound to up as time goes on. However, I know my cost for renting the HD box and DVR service has stayed the same for quite some time now and Cox has added at least 3 more HD channels. Actually 4 but but ESPN2-HD was put in place of KETV(ABC)-HD so nubmer of channels has only gone up by 3.

The HD/DVR box is $4.95 and the DVR service is $9.95 and HD only box is $5.75

Omaha only added ESPN2HD and A&EHD that was not local. They just added National Geographic HD with no price increase.

I agree.

I had Cox for years and years but gave up in November of last year because I just couldn't take the constant battles Cox had with ESPN, CBS, and Fox. They went public with it as well so I saw commercial after commercial about it....I never understood why...all Cox was doing was getting their own customers nervous and making sure all non-Cox customers were NOT going to go over to their side.

I choose D* because it has all the channels I need with no hassles. But, D* is a little more costly....though I can live with it instead of having to worry if the Saints game will be on....or whether ESPN will show up, etc...

Parents still have CoxHD and are slightly disappointed with the lack of HD channels the last few months.

Even the separate PPV channels won’t do we S3 owners any good because they are interactive, too. I learned that the hard way earlier this week when I ordered Cox OKC’s PPV telecast of the Utah State v. Oklahoma football game on Cox Channel 610. I have had to disconnect the SA 8300HD, which is connected to my other HDTV in another room, and move it into my big room in order to see the game on my biggest HDTV and in my most comfortable viewing environment.

Even with the hassle described above, I love my S3 and have never regreted buying it. Those of you who are familiar with the SA 8300HD and its pitiful SARA software will understand my attitude.

Cox OKC used to do that, too. That’s why I had thought, incorrectly as it turned out, that I would be able to get the PPV football game on my S3. I couldn’t Cox now has all of its PPV stuff set up interactively so that everything they offer that way can be purchased through one of their DTV boxes. There was a time when basic cable subscribers could buy some PPV stuff by telephone here but these day’s Cox requires a digital box.

All I can tell you is that Cox OKC is showing the PPV telecast of the Utah State v. Oklahoma football game on Channel 610, that the telecast is interactive, and that CableCARD devices can’t decode interactive PPV at present.

I just got off the phone with a Cox tech support guy who was aware of the CableCARD problem with interactive PPV offerings. He told me that all Cox OKC’s PPV offerings are currently interactive but that Cox engineers are “working on a solution.” When I pressed him, it was clear he didn’t understand that the S3, as well as other CableCARD enabled devices, are one way and won’t be able to support interactive video, even with next generation CableCARDs. Thus, I have no idea what sort of “solution” it is that Cox’s engineers are working on.

If you, or anybody else for that matter, have actually ordered a PPV event and been able to watch it on an S3, please, please let us know. If that’s the case then Cox OKC certainly should not have done the PPV telecast of the football game the way they did.

I have a TV with CableCARD, and I can phone Cox to get PPV events. But in the case of interactive PPV, only a box would be able to do that. The Cox tech support was probably referring to the multi-stream cards(M-[Cable]CARD), which allow for two-way capabilities for two-way capable devices.

Other news:
Cox Fairfax(Northern VA) will be switching to SDV on October 16, 2007.
All of our PPV, Latino channels and other select channels are NOT available on CableCARD. And, they will be raising rates for basic/expanded packages, CableCARDS, all boxes, and international programming.

That’s exactly right. Also, I suspect that the Cox OKC tech guy I talked to on the phone was talking about the new M-cards and didn’t understand the inherent limitations on one-way CableCARD devices.

The difficulty I have as a TiVo S3 owner is that it is a one-way device, so it can’t deal with interactive video, which requires two-way communication. Thus, it doesn’t matter what kind of new CableCARDs Cox deploys, they won’t do me any good until and unless TiVo and the other players can get together and agree on a fix for the S3 that will render it capable of two-way communications.

So far, at least, Cox OKC has represented to me that they have no immediate intention of introducing SDV here – thank God!

“This agreement for HD launches of Discovery Channel, TLC, Animal Planet and The Science Channel is a thrilling development for our customers. Cox customers also will be able to experience their favorite programs in stunning 1080i clarity for the first time, including the danger, excitement and grime of Discovery Channel’s hit series DEADLIEST CATCH and DIRTY JOBS; the adventures of TLC’s much-loved Roloff family from LITTLE PEOPLE BIG WORLD; all the antics and drama of Animal Planet’s MEERKAT MANOR; and the wonder and mystery of the red planet with The Science Channel’s MARS RISING; to name just a few. Cox’s actual HD channel line-up will vary by market.

“Since launching Discovery HD Theater in 2002, interest in HD has exploded and viewers have continuously demanded more HD content from Discovery,” added David Zaslav, president and CEO, Discovery Communications. “As seen with the Emmy-award winning series, PLANET EARTH, Discovery’s non-fiction genres truly come alive in HD, making our channels top destinations for viewers. DiscoveryHD Theater - Offers diverse program types including nature, science, technology and more. HD production fever has recently spread to the series side; TLC’s Trading Spaces, Discovery's Rides, Surprise By Design, Atlas, and American Chopper are being produced in HD. Currently, Discovery HD Theater is available on Dish Network, DirecTV, and most cable systems including Charter, Cox and Comcast. Also available from Canadian HDTV providers. Launched June of 2002
Discovery HD mirror of the SD channel, with a crop and zoom approach for SD. Limited HD is available for now, including Lobster Wars. Available on Dish Network, with DirecTV coming soon. Launched Sept.1 2007 (?)

Don't know if anyone has mentioned or asked but Cox here in Northern Va now has shafted the folks getting HD via QAM. They used to send all their HD material over the lined unencrypted (except for premiums like HBO) but apparently that has changed.

I just bought a new LCD for the living room and plugged in the coax to get my HD via QAM. Now only the locals come in. Upon looking at their website they now require the "digital gateway" to get the additional HD channels via QAM which costs an additional $7.00 or so (I think). Sucks.

No TNT, TLC, CNN HD here in Tucson. I still feel like we're getting jacked compared to other providers, no Food, no HGTV HD, etc...

Cox has been terrible about getting TBS HD. The rest of the country has it, but Arizona gets screwed and is stuck watching the D'Backs in SD. We also won't be getting any new HD until 2008. What a way to convince your subscribers to make the jump to D*.

Right now, I'd settle for Cox (Fairfax) to get TBS-HD so I can watch the playoffs. (Of course, there are other HD channels I'd like to have.) It's a little frustrating reading about other Cox customers getting it and, so far, bupkes here -- especially they made a big deal about SDV. So far, all we've got to show for it is repeats of other non-HD channels.

Northern Virginia doesn't have it, either.

That’s too bad. it surprises me because OKC is a smaller market that Phoenix but we got TBS HD in time for the MLB playoffs. I guess that it’s a decision for the individual operators and the size of the market is secondary.

Wow. That stinks. You watch the D-Backs all year in HD then have to watch them in SD for the NLDS/NLCS. What the heck is that Arizona Cox operator thinking.

I would get multiple emails in the inbox of the person who runs Cox in Arizona and express your displeasure. We had a similar issue when the Patriots were in the Super Bowl and Cox-RI was not going to broadcast the game in HD. Believe me we all went nuts for a week and COX-RI ended up doing the right thing by simulcasting the game in HD on MOJO (INHD1). I can imagine the outrage if the Sox where not in HD this October.

Good luck getting this situation straight. As you state if they are not responsive then that will probably be the end of sports fans subscribing to Cox in Arizona. Send them a few quotes from this forum to show how far behind they are in terms of delivering sports in HD. Go D-Backs !

U will get more channels before 08 trust me.Why did an email get sent to all the CSRs today saying the exact opposite? Seems to me that if they had plans to launch anything that they would continue to waffle and give the stock "we are always investigating new channels blah blah blah" email rather than come right out and say that nothing would be added.

The only email that was sent to all CSR's today said that we signed an agreement for CNN-HD & TBS-HD today. It didn't say specifically which markets would get the channels and when. I found out that the who was all markets. It has not been released yet when the channels would be on.

If you have it please send it my way.

Yeah, this is complete BS. Not sure why Fairfax County, VA is not considered a big enough market to get TBS HD.

Agreed. Get EVERYONE to flood Cox's email box with complaints.

It works if enough people do it...or it may not work but it will get their attention.

Cox has been great in delivering channels such as TBS-HD in time for the MLB playoffs. In terms of number of HD Channels Direct-TV is keeping the pressure on and starting to significantly increase the differential (45 vs. 27 (Cox RI)) at the moment:

Direct TV HD Channels 45:

Cox could cut to HD-Lite and horrid bit-rates if you really wanted that Weather Channel HD.

If Cox get Sci-Fi HD and Smithsonian HD and Animal Planet HD, I am a happy camper

Agreed, I am fairly happy with the channel selection and the quality of the channels that I am getting. the problems I have had are equipment related.

A list of want channels:
HDNet
HDNet Movies
Sci Fi
FX
More HD OnDemand (Showtime,Cinemax,Starz)
HD Events
I really dont watch any other channels so Id be good to go really if these were added. I know the problem with HDNet is that Cox is a stakeholder in Mojo(previously INHD), but I see that Comcast might be getting HDNet so hopefully that would go well for us as well.

The only thing that does sock is that Cox separates its operations by geographic area. So that while some may see a good amount of HD some might be on the low priority list. all I can recommend is that you get everyone you know in the area to call\write for more HD. There is power in numbers.

It also has to do with the fact that some areas don't have the bandwidth to add HD channels.

Maybe if they cut down on the number of analog shopping network
channels they could free up some bandwidth for "The All-American Game" in HD.

Below are a couple of good articles on ajwees41's point:

If you have it please send it my way.Don't have it as I don't work for Cox, just what I was told by the CSR (first front-line CSR I've ever talked to at Cox that didn't go into idiot mode when I mentioned my QAM tuner, so I tend to believe her). She said that it was sent to the all the Phoenix CSRs so you on the other side of the country probably didn't get it :). You can also check the Phoenix local forum for an email another person got confirming that Cox isn't planning to add anything until next year.

TBS-HD is live in Vegas, San Diego, New England, New Orleans, OKC, Omaha, Gainesville-Ocala, and Topeka. Not up in Arkansas, NoVA, Middle Georgia, Phoenix/Tucson, OC, or Santa Barbara.

It's funny to hear but the smaller the market the earlier they will get some of the new channels. Cox is in the process of of upgrading all the networks with next generation equipment. Docsis 3.0 & 4.0 are doing wonders for compression rates. I too would favor cutting down or eliminating on analog channels however there are more customers who do not want all digital. The vocal majority are us on this board, technofiles & early adopters.

Appreciate your insider knowledge occasio. The area that confuses me is why do cable companies deliver 80+ analog channels. I understand the issues for requiring analog (customer issues/FCC regulations), but am confused why so much bandwith needs to be taken up with "legacy" channels. In areas where bandwidth is precious (such as potentially our Arizona and Virginia friends above) couldn't a small number of these channels be retired to allow channels such as TBSHD to be aired. Is this a technical issue or a contractual one? Is it a customer demand issue where folks would go nuts if they only had 3 home shopping channels instead of 6 :>)

What markets actually have 80 analog channels? I am sure if you take a look at the channel lineups theys don't have programming on all 80 channels. The shopping channels actually pay the cable companies for carriage. The reason the smaller cox locations get the new HD channels first probably is the size of the upgrade would be smaller.

Interestingly, NoVA has around 79 analog channels, probably the reason we are the first to get SDV. The reason every Cox area doesn't have TBS HD, DiscoveryHD, etc. is because of different vidoe headends have different bandwidths. So smaller systems like Rhode Island and Topeka are getting them because the amount of legacy analog channels is much lower than NoVA for example.
