View Full Version : General XBox 360 problem Thread:
the thing i dislike is how the dam harddrive will over heat and what not. then u get the 3 flashing red lights and ****. i bought a colling fan for it the first time i had this problem in hopes to solve it. but it has happend 3 other times. the 3rd just in the past day. they have sent me a new Xbox every time. Now i have the core system becuz i had to buy ouy of my owen pocket.. does any one see a difrence in this roblem compared with the core as the primium..
They are the exact same units. I don't think the HDD is causing the problems, it's lack of proper heat dissipation on the various processors (CPU, GPU, etc) that is causing the problem, IMO.
Automatonjohn 11-28-06, 05:00 PM Well, my 360 crapped out on me for good today. Unfortunately, I forgot to order an extended warranty. Damn. That'll cost me $70 (assuming I won't need more repairs in the future  ).
Needless to say, I am seriously pissed off. I still think the 360 is a great system, but I think buying the extended warranty should be an automatic for every buyer, which is pretty ridiculous.
FWIW, mine's a 1/25/06 build date which I bought on 3/2/06.

My build date was the same as yours. It is currently on its way to be repaired. What was your problem?
They quoted me $136 for the repair, plus the $35 to ship it UPS.
After they repair your unit, you get an additional 90 days warranty. You can then extend the warranty an additional 2 years before that 90 days is up if you wish.

I had the 0102 code, which means it's a mystery.
They quoted me $130 to repair.
Thanks for the info on the extended warranty. That'll make it easier for me to swallow the repair bill if that's what I decide to do.

Same thing here. From what I can tell, most people that had the 0102 error and had symptoms similar to mine (see above) had microfractures in the solder around the GPU.
You haven't been playing a processing intense game like Dead Rising or GoW lately, have you?
I actually managed to get my repair done free of charge, but it took several calls and a couple e-mails. It might have helped that I could speach reliability engineering technical jargon at them when needed.
darkouer 11-29-06, 12:28 PM Hi. I've been having a lot of trouble with my XB 360. Mainly lock ups. I havent seen the red ligth on the ring, so I dont think it has to do with over heating.
Sometimes the DVD drive stars sounding forced, and suddenly stops. This situation has 3 possible outcomes:
1) The game continues normally. :)
2) The game freezes for a while (between 10 secs to 30 secs) then continues playing normally.
3) The console freezes altogether!!
Also I have experienced other problems depending on the game I play.
- Final Fantasy XI: With autoboot up enabled the disc is sometimes recognized as a DVD Video (about 40% of the time)
-With Phantasy star universe it sometimes has problem reading the disc and prompts me to clean it, but it is on excellent condition!!!!
Yesterday that problem after I used the PLAY GAME option in dashboard and the thing took about 6 minuts just to tell me to clean the disc, and I shut the console down. After I turned it on again my profile data was corrupted. Dmn!!!!

Yep, I had just finished single player of GoW when the problems began.
Well, I decided to pay $200 for the core system at Microcenter (after mail-in rebate). I just thought I might as well pay a little more for a brand new system (with another controller to boot), rather than basically $35 less for a refurbished unit and have to wait weeks to get it.
Too bad this didn't happen last week and I could've tried for that $100 core system at Amazon. Oh well.
my xbox360 is upgrade to play a copy games ok . then i bought gears of war orginal game not copy one, and the problem bagin when i put the cd it show me message to use thes game playit in xbox360. ????????????????

Microsoft does not allow modded consoles. You will not be able to play many games, especially on-line, with a modded console.
but they told me you can paly orignal games, what should i do now ???
but they told me you can paly orignal games, what should i do now ???
"They" lied to you. :(
I guess the solution is to buy another console and leave it unmodded for games with this protection built in. I know it's not what you wanted to hear, but copying games is usually illegal and companies like Microsoft are in their right to do everything they can to prevent it.
Only a one day turn around on the unit I sent in to be repaired. Total time including transit (USPS to, UPS from) is 11 days. Just for reference.
Wow I'm glad I found this thread, was just about to buy an XBOX 360, never had a console before, I thought they were supposed to be problem free, unlike PC's?? Think I'll hold off for now.

Even after having issues, I don't regret my purchase. The 360 is pretty sweet and I love the online gameplay.
I would just factor in the extended warranty into the purchase price.
Is the extended warranty purchased from Microsoft, or third party?
Is the extended warranty purchased from Microsoft, or third party?
It depends. I bought my EW from EBGames, which allows me to box it up and take it to the store for a direct exchange. ...Which I did when the Dead Rising demo bricked my console.
With that said, MS's EW seems like a better deal if you don't mind being without your 360 for a week or so if/when it breaks down.
amir-hk240 12-01-06, 07:16 PM About 2-3 times a day while i'm playing GOW, my xbox will stop working and say that the disk is unreadable and needs to be cleaned. After a reboot, it works again. I have not other games so it only does this on GOW. Any ideas?
GrimSanto 12-02-06, 05:46 PM I have a Sharp LC-32D40U, Everything time I put my 360 at 1080i, The image is fine but the screen jump every in a once. It driving me mad. I don’t want to play in 720p because it doesn’t look as good. Any idea why this is happening?

Many consoles have inherent problems to them, especially at launch. The PSX had problems, the PS2 had many problems as well (hence the many different model #s you can get), the 1st-gen XBoxes had some DVD-ROM issues as well (used an inferior brand which had problems later on down the line).

Over in the ARS forum someone else had the same issue, I think they either called Epic or MS and the disk was replaced for free, apparently it's a known issue with the disk, not the console.
Tenkaipalm 12-10-06, 04:48 PM Well, it finally happened to me- my launch 360 freezes up now. No red lights, just locks up, somethimes while simply navigating the dashboard.

Unfortunately, in my experience, this leads to the red lights. I just sent mine in last week because of the freezes.
Wozzer73 12-11-06, 03:44 PM I am so pissed that MS put out such a sweet-ass poor-quality product, they made me buy it and now I'm afraid to play it in case it breaks :-/

Good to know, I've been having the same problem.
The Xbox will only see videos in the WMV format. You'll have to convert the files using something like TPMGENC, or something similar. Or you can install software that on the PC that streams other formats, but I've seen folks complaining about it not working. Do an internet search and you'll find both.
Tversity works pretty well. I have had issues with my router not handling ip multicasting properly, but all I have to do is restart the tversity server (so it announces itself to the network).
In theory, it will stream any video type that your PC is capable of displaying. It will stream your MP3 and WMA libraries as well. No complaints here.
Window Media Player Connect works as well, albeit with more limitations.

Same thing started happening to me yesterday. I can't play for more than 10 minutes before it just simply freezes. I'm sure the red lights will follow soon. Mine wasn't a launch console, it was manufactured 4/06. It appears there are the same issues though still prevalent that there were with the launch. To only give a 90 day warranty where the industry standard for most computers/electronics is 1-3 years is ridiculous, especially when they need to sell games and accessories to make up for money lost on the console.
I spent last night complaining to MS, and now today I'm filing complaints/reports everywhere I can. I agree with all the other posters that when it works, the 360 is an awesome console. Too bad they're not built to last.

Mine was a 4/06 unit as well, died Dec 8. My friend has a 4/06 one as well and it died last night.
modiGTI 12-13-06, 10:29 AM I think my 360 drive is about to die. Anyone ever have their drive start getting really loud when it first starts up? Or when it turns off it makes a loud whine? Yeah...my drive dosen't sound normal.
I've been getting a lot of Disc Read Errors also. My copy of GoW has been fine till last night, whenever I try to load the story up from the start, it'll start giving me a Disc Read Error. I checked my disc to make sure it was clean, and poped it back in, I still got the same problem. I think it's time to use the EW.
I agree with all the other posters that when it works, the 360 is an awesome console.
That's what makes the high failure rate so painful.
JimsArcade 12-14-06, 03:31 PM Is anybody else having problems streaming content to the 360 with WMP11 and/or the Zune software. WMP11 & Zune on my PC can find my 360 and allow me to share my media to it, but my 360 cannot find my PC. I've opened all the suggested ports on my firewall and even completely disabled it with no success.
I've seen people have this exact same problem on the XBOX forums, but no one has come up with a solution that works for everyone, not even MSFT support.

Maybe a router issue? Is the router on the "approved" list? One of mine is not on the list and I had to do something to some arcane parameter like PnP, but the other router is very happily working. I know, this is a really vague post, but the memory is dim, I'm sorry. I just hope a hint may help.

blahsome 12-18-06, 02:04 PM Make sure in WMP 11, you explicit select the XBox 360 icon and enable sharing. Merely seeing an XBox 360 in a device list is not good enough.

Having problems deleting a partial demo download from the HDD. any help please?
LR6AGB001 12-19-06, 04:15 AM I've been wondering if a few members here have experienced this problem. As of late GoW had become a bit choppy and it's not as snappy as it once was when I first ran through the game. Lately the textures would appear smooth and undefined for all about 5-8 seconds and refresh with the textures fully rendered and the cutscenes mainly the finale is a choppy. I've had my system replaced 3X so far and Microsoft caved and sent me a new system but with a build date of 11-04-05 so this makes it a launch system. Any suggestions here would be helpful, could it be the hard drive? Or shall I prepare this system for a warm Christmas back at Texas?

You are given the option, take the update or disconnect.
Personally, I just take the update every time, for these reasons:-
If I have a problem, it makes it easier to diagnose, and fix
I get the latest improvements in functionality (e.g. DVD bookmark)
I get the latest backward compatibility updates
I get the latest game updates (e.g. PGR3 force-feedback support)
I get the latest hardware support (e.g. HD-DVD drive support)
IMHO the risk of failure is small and worth taking
What'sHD 12-20-06, 07:43 AM I have been through the MS help sites. Light is orange and connections are fine. The site says this means the console is spoilt.
This with my add-on arriving on monday.. friggin A
Anyone who fixed this prob with their 360 w/o going to MS? Help a brutha out
What'sHD 12-21-06, 01:33 AM Ok, MS support assures me the console is spoilt and its not the power supply. I tested with a friend's power supply, so much for that hope, feeble as it was :(
A replacement will be in my hand in January.. Brilliant. I am guessing when the new 360 arrives, the add-on will develop a problem, just to keep me hopping :D
brianmcl 12-21-06, 05:24 PM hey guys for all you expereinceing xbox 360 problems i've have received notice from someone inside xbox that they will be sending refunds to anyone whom has purchased a 1 warranty for their xbox 360 by chegoe through mail. they'll also be replacing xbox 360's whom have severe problems so all you whom have bough warranty's your in luck you will now be receiving cheuqe's in the mail but you might have to call xbox thank you cheers!
attached the hd dvd add on to the 360 and watched a movie. did not install the software disc that came with the add on. About 5 minutes in the movie froze and now have 3 flashing red lights. Tryed unplugging everything and plugging back in, did not work. And yes it is plugged in to a wall outlet not a power bar.
Thanks

..is your optical connection to your 360 av pack snug and secure. My optical has to be just perfect and is basically just lying in the port to the point that it will come out at the slightest nudge. Good luck finding a solution.
sandgoose 12-25-06, 03:06 AM Couple of problems:
TV: Hitachi 42HDF529 (2005 model, 42" plasma)
Premium Xbox 360
Ok so I just picked this tv up the other week, and it is working great for my main purpose of gaming and watching movies with my 360. I had my 360 hooked up via compnent, but I noticed the DVDs did not look all that great. Got to reading and found out that component doesnt output DVD's in 720 or 1080. I was reccomended to go pick up the VGA cable. So I did that and got it all hooked up correctly.
Now comes the first problem:
The user manual states that the TV's native resolution is 1024X1024. To me that resolution reads as a full screen TV, but my TV is certainly NOT fullscreen. Then I to select this resolution, and of course...its not available. So I pick a different resolution just to check out a DVD, which leads me to my second and most important problem.
When I hooked up the VGA and started playing a DVD (2:48 widecreen). The entire screen has some sort of staticy noise. Looks like colored pixels(red, blue, green) It happens on the entire screen, but is obviously more evident in black bars. The picture quality of the DVD is much better, but while that is great...it really sucks.
Any help would be appreciated
Andrew
Sent my 360 in for repairs last week, hopefully it'll come back soon..I miss it already. :(
sfitzger 12-26-06, 11:09 AM I'm using the VGA cable for 360 with sammy HLS 5688...1080p works fine through component but when using VGA the picture is cut about 2 inches on every side does somenoe have a solution for the fix?
What'sHD 12-27-06, 02:48 AM Anyone had their 360 go a little nuts and keep opening and closing the console disc tray?
For no apparent reason.. While watching HD-DVDs too.
Sometimes, the game just stops, the console goes back to dashboard. I really dont understand how the 360 can have this many bugs.
Anyone had their 360 go a little nuts and keep opening and closing the console disc tray?
Just a thought -- you might want to check to see if you have any remotes nearby with stuck buttons or something like a book sitting on a remote.
What'sHD 12-27-06, 08:56 PM Just a thought -- you might want to check to see if you have any remotes nearby with stuck buttons or something like a book sitting on a remote.
Thanks. Yes, that thought struck me after 15 mins of standing there and cussing at it =)
So, I removed the batteries from the add-on remote. Still, the problem remained. Funny thing is the console tray opening repeatedly doesnt affect the HD movie, unless the tray has a game inside. I havent checked that scenario yet.
A new bug: If I dont switch off the 360 at the mains, but simply power it off with the remote/fascia, it turns on by itself sometimes and starts playing a movie/game depending on whats inside. This one really has me stumped. An exorcist might be the answer.

Lunitik AP 12-29-06, 03:08 PM Recently I got a HDTV (never had the problem before then) and now everytime I turn the Xbox 360 on the picture flickers all over the place, I have to turn the 360 on and off up to ten times before it comes on clear and normal.
Any ideas why this is happening?
Ninjahedge 12-29-06, 05:05 PM Interesting problem here.
I have the 360 and a Yamaha RXV-1000 receiver.
I have hooked the system up via the VGA to my Panasonic TH50PHD8UK and optical to my receiver.
Problem is, no matter what I choose, the X-box does not seem to like to play anything on the center channel.
If I switch to Digital Stereo, it comes through the center loud and clear.
Now it is not the stereo, s other inputs come through the center channel just fine,
but being as there is no real "test" mode to go into for the box, I have no idea what could be causing this exclusion.
It is OK when using the general console, as you hear a bit on the L-R and rear channels, but playing CoD 2 is getting echo-irritating. I can hear the guys speaking better if I deliberately turn to one side of the person speaking.
Any clue whatsoever what might be causing this and what I can do to TS or solve it?
TIA!
HappyFunBoater 12-31-06, 07:34 AM Does anyone know what frequency the 360 uses to communicate with the controllers? I'm assuming that it's 2.5GHz because I was doing a laptop backup via wireless (802.11G, so in the 2.5GHz range) and my controllers kept loosing connection. All four green LEDs would blink. I sometimes would spend 30 seconds trying to get it to reconnect, and within a minute it would lose connection again. I stopped the backup and the problem went away. BTW, the wireless headset also didn't work very well during the backup, so I assume it's at 2.5GHz also.
Does anyone know the exact frequency, so perhaps I can choose a 360 band further away from the WiFi band?

Some 360s have a very loud DVD drive... usually not during DVD or original Xbox game playback but extremely loud playing a 360 game.
sharkyziff 12-31-06, 05:12 PM All,
I am experiencing bad picture judder/stutter when playing SD DVDs in either the console drive or the HD Drive. I have tried three sets of component cables and am now on my third brand new Xbox 360 console.
I have tried MS Support (no help) and tried different power outlets, multiple DVDs, with or without a power strip, and on both of my TVs. All with the same result.
To make things even more confusing, HD DVDs look great on the HD Drive. Both King Kong and MI3 look fantastic with no judder/stutter of the picture. Games also play fine with no issue. I thought my 360 was my one stop solution for my home theater. Games on console drive and both SD/HD DVDs on the HD Drive.
Any help you can provide will be GREATLY appreciated!!
Thanks in advance!! :D
sharkyziff 12-31-06, 07:57 PM Additonal info:
OK, I spent way too many hours today going through my entire library of SD DVDs... turns out I only have problems with movies that are in the THX format (all of the Star Wars movies, all of the disney movies...)
So, it looks like my problem is my console is not doing a good job decoding DVDs in the THX format and hence I am seeing the judder.
Anyone else have problems with THX encoded DVDs??
I called MS Support again and they claimed they have never heard of an issue with THX encoded DVDs. It is just very strange that my problem only involves SD DVDs that have THX encoding (granted I do not have any HD DVDs with THX encoding to try out.)
Thanks again for any insight!! :D

bri1270 01-04-07, 12:03 PM Is anyone getting an error that says the disc is dirty or needs to be cleaned? Is it time to send the console in?

i get that at least once a week with random games. gets very annoying. seems to happen with newer, pristine discs than discs that are actually scratched!!!!!

Do you think it's worth calling MS about?
twobrain 01-04-07, 02:46 PM Interesting problem here.
TIA!
turn effects off on the receiver?
Ninjahedge 01-11-07, 05:18 PM I don't think that will do it, since turning effects "off" will also turn the surround speakers off (It will turn it into a regular stereo...)
I have tried it in all the digital modes and no dice....
Thanks for the reply though!
BloatedCorpse 01-11-07, 05:31 PM turn effects off on the receiver?
..have you tried setting your speaker options to small?
Ninjahedge 01-11-07, 05:40 PM Yes, that only effects the crossover frequencies for the effects (if I go small, the base goes all to the sub).
The thing is, with the same settings on the stereo, when I swap settings to "stereo" on the box, it comes through the center loud and clear. It is only when I do surround that it drops...
Also, for some reason Gears sounds much clearer (little to no echo) on the same settings. I still do not think that the center channel is going, but I can hear the dialogue much more easily.
This looks to be more of a coding or software issue. Maybe there is a setting in-game that I am missing....
I will double check.
biomechanoid999 01-15-07, 12:51 AM I have a Sharp LC-32D40U, Everything time I put my 360 at 1080i, The image is fine but the screen jump every in a once. It driving me mad. I don’t want to play in 720p because it doesn’t look as good. Any idea why this is happening?
I have this same model of TV, with the exact same problem. Anytime I set the 360 to output at 1080i, the image will jump very slightly at random intervals. At first, I thought something was wrong with my eyes.

sharkyziff 01-18-07, 05:09 PM Update on my image judder problem with SD DVDs on my Xbox 360:
It turns on that the PC Board on my plasma panel was starting to go bad. Best Buy replaced it under their extended warranty program. I now have judder free images when playing DVDs via Xbox 360!!
I now love my 360 once again!! :D
* Update * I've tried a second set of hd cables to no avail. It looks like the box will be going back to MS :(
* Update 2 * I have now tried another xbox 360 as well with no luck at all.
I have seen a few posts here and there mentioning a similiar situation to what I am experiencing.
I have a Hitachi 51f59A that I am connecting the console to. I have tried component through my reciever as well as directly to 2 seperate sets of inputs on the set and in every scenario it behaves exactly the same. It will allow me to choose 720P, 1080i and 1080P... my set will not support 1080P so I have chosen each of the other available hd choices with no luck. Basically it will accept the choice and display the confirm settings screen, upon choosing "yes keep new settings" it will revert back to 480 again in every instance. I can verify that it is outputting the correct format with the input button on the remote and see that it's recieving the appropriate resolution while it's showing the "keep settings screen", but it it will not retain the selection. I have spent too much time with "tech support" to no avail.. they feel the TV is to blame, ignoring the fact that not only is it's native res 1080i but also the fact that the dashboard continually reads that HDTV is disabled.... I hope it's the cable and not the console itself. Does anyone have any ideas that I might try or suggestions as to how to find the real culprit here?
Just spent almost 2k between the system and set and all the bits to finally make the jump to HD.... and I am just barely enjoying edtv. Help a brotha out!
sorry for the meandering post, but after 2 hours and a dropped call with support, my mind has been dulled

i to have the same problem except it effects all of my speakers when i have the 360 set to 5.1...and heres the real wierd part, i can take the exact same optical cord plug it into my PS3, and plug the optical cord into the the same optical port on my receiver that i use for the 360 and my ps3 works just fine in 5.1...then i went down to EB games and got my buddy who works there to let me borrow a used hi def cable with optical splitter on it to see if thats what my problem was...i got it home and it did the same thing...no sound on 5.1...so i figured it was my system, so i took it back and got a new one from EB with another warranty on it...i got that home and it still didnt work! the only thing i can think of now is that the cable must not be on tight enough, at least thats what im hoping for, because i know for a fact it cant possibly be any of my equipment...believe me, ive tried EVERY possible combination of optical ports, cables etc, and theres no way its my receiver or speakers...they all work fine
anywho enough of my ranting, but for gods sake, someone help!!!
newtotheforum 01-19-07, 11:16 AM The other night I was playing Call of Duty2 and when I attempted to exit the game it froze and I had to power off the unit. Last night I attempted to play game again, I power up the unit, place game in drive, it says reading but the screen stays blank and game does not play. If I insert older game (Halo2) it reads and plays game, same with Music CD or DVD. My question is: Do you guys think issue with game or do I have issue with XBOX360 unit? As luck would have it I am still in the 30day return policy for the xbox360. Any thoughts or comments is appreciated.
Here's one that I don't know if I've seen reported anywhere else. This morning I was online in Rainbow Six Vegas, in the middle of a firefight, when my system froze hard. I powered off and then back on again, and the system booted up fine -- BUT none of my wireless controllers would connect to the system. I could use a wired controller, but the "Player 1" indicator at the 11 o'clock position in the ring of light does not light up on the power button (it is lit on my Guide button on the wired controller).
Using my wired controller, I was able to navigate all the blades, but I noticed in the Dashboard that I wasn't able to go down and select my HD-DVD drive, nor was the Eject button on the HD-DVD drive lit. I tried re-installing the HD-DVD drive software, and the system asked me to connect the HD-DVD drive to my console. It was already plugged into the 360's rear USB port. Grumbling, I switched it to one of the front USB ports. Thankfully the HD-DVD drive was recognized and the software was re-installed.
Thinking all was fixed. I tried plugging the HD-DVD drive into the rear USB port (which is where I would prefer it) and again got the problem with wireless controllers not connecting, and the Player 1 light not showing up on the Ring of Light. (Grumble, mutter.) I move the HD-DVD USB plug to the front, and everything's dandy again.
I still need to try my Vision Camera and/or the wired controller in the rear of the console to see if the USB port is fried or what, but needless to say, this ain't making me the happiest of campers. I see by a quick bit of Googling that I'm not the only one whose machine sees problems when used in conjunction with R6V. Anyone got any comments on this?
UPDATE: The wired controller works through the rear USB port. The camera and HD-DVD add-on, however, do not. Curiouser and curiouser...
OBi-black90 01-20-07, 05:43 PM Hey I have a question I have been wondering. Whenever I put in a game, a screen comes up saying "to play this disc, put it in an xbox 360 console." When this comes up, I just go to the dashboard and eject the disc, then close it again. Any thoughts? Im pretty sure my 360 was manufactured before jan 06 ( i checked behind the console, where the wireless network adapter usually sits and saw a date). I used to only have this problem every now and then, but now it wont read any of my games, usually about 15-20 minutes of ejecting and closing before it works. Will Microsoft fix this for me if i call? Is this something that could possibly lead to harware failure? I got my 360 in january of last year, and I have treated it VERY gently because of all of the problems I have heard. There is nothing covering it, knowing that it gets overheated easily. Anyone having/had similar issues, and are there any remedies?

I bought my 360 not a week ago and I bought the only game I wanted GEARS OF WAR. AFter a couple days of playing it sometimes does not recognize the disc. Sometimes it Just stays on the logo screen. I have to turn off and back on the system then it MIGHT load. Sometimes it gives me "This disc needs to be played in an Xbox 360" message. Sometimes I am in the game and it will tell me the disc is unreadable. I think I'm bringing it back to the store tomorrow and exchange it for another one. The disc is fine its NEW.

oldmanwinter 01-22-07, 09:40 AM Hello everyone. I just recieved a replacement system from Microsoft due to my dvd lens dying.NOw I am having an issue and im not sure if its the system or my component cables. When I hooked the system back up it gives me the picture and no audio.Everything is hooke dup correctly to my Dell 3201c monitor. When I plug my wii component cables to the same connection everything works just fine. Also when i turn off my sstem the screen glows red then changes violet looking and I cannot change inputs while I am on this channel when the 360 is hooked up.Does this sound like a cables issue or is my tv going bad?
I did. The issue is the same on both 720p and 1080i.
Is the selector switch on the component cables set to "HDTV"?

Yes it is. I called support all pissed and the girl insists it's a hardware issue and want me to ship it back in again.

That's what I saw the last time I played it (on my old console) - consensus is that your GPU is overheating and, indeed, the unit will need to be sent in for repair.
Ran into this thread when it was happening to me:
http://forums.xbox.com/2/7858434/ShowPost.aspx#7858434
I have a Toshiba 57' projection HDTV. The 57H93 to be exact.
I have the 360 hooked directly to it via component
I I have my 360 hooked into a 57' HDTV
1080i on both the tv and 360. The component cables are hooked into the TV
I have the 360 and TV plugged into a Monster Cable surge protector. The 360 is on top of the surge protector
The problem:
If you are in a dark area in any 360 game, a corner or a black screen area, I am getting these faint rolling vertical white lines from left to right. Almost looks like ghosts. or fog. like a scrolling radar. If the game is paused, it doesn't do it.
The 360 is set for 1080i widescreen.
Problem happens on XBOX games, including non 360 games. I have tried two 360 consoles, same thing.
But, here is the catch. I switched the 360 system settings to 720p and the lines went away. Went back to 1080i and they came back.
THis kills me. My tv supports 1080i. Why then can't I enjoy the feature with the 360.
Lines do not appear if you are playing a DVD through the 360.
I don't think it is the tv because it does not do it while watching tv or playing dvds.
Has anyone out there seen this happen?
I am offering a reward if I can get this to stop;)

That's strange and I don't have any idea why this is happening, but I have to say: Just because a TV supports 1080i input doesn't make that the best selection to feed it.
IMO you are better off setting your 360 to 720p, especially if your set is 720p native.
BTW. My issue was resolved by me disassembling the cable and manually switching it to hdtv via the internal portion of the silde switch. It kind of "popped" as if there had been a short and rebooted, upon reboot I am now able to select any format aside from 1080P which my set does not support.
Strange and I'm not sure if it was the switch that wasn't quite making contact in one position, or if that "pop" was just it shorting... with good results :)
Either way, I am now able to enjoy the system as I set out to and I am happy.
Thanks to those of you who posted suggestions.
Angel
Thanks for the responses guys. Appreciate it.
I buy my stuff at Best Buy and get the service contracts. I have a guy coming out to the house next week.
To tell you the truth I think the picture looks better in 720p. I just feel that I should be in 1080i because it is supposed to be better.
Kind of like getting a Porsche with turbo, but not being able to use it.
I feel like I am cheated. It will be interesting to see what the repair guy says.

No, it's a common misconception. People see the numbers and think that 1080i is way better than 720p. 1080i definitely isn't "turbo-charged" over 720p -- progressive scanning reduces the need to prevent flicker by filtering out fine details, so spatial (sharpness) resolution is much closer to 1080i than the number of scan lines would suggest. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p)
If you have a 720 native set, setting your 360 to 720p is the best picture you will get.

Also, not every game renders in 1080i....if you have a 720p game, why convert to 1080i then back to 720 or 768p at the television?
liltalkm 01-28-07, 09:39 AM Not really a problem, just something I found interesting.
I recently received my launch 360 back from repairs. It was the first time I had to send it in and they sent me back the same unit.
Well, at least the shell is my original.
When I plugged it in, I quickly learned that the 360 had a new mac address. So, they obviously at least replaced the network card, but I believe that is attached to the motherboard. So I am assuming that I got a new one.
I wonder how much of my 360 is really new now. I wonder if they are just replacing the entire 360's insides and just using the old casing/skin for warranty purposes.
This may be a silly post but curiosity got the best of me and wondered if others have seen this too.

That is a very good question. I'll find out in the next 24 hours, because ... my 360 is defective, once again. I got it back from their Texas repair depot 3 weeks ago, to fix the 3 blinking red light problem. Now something is wrong with the dvd drive. It causes this message to come up: unreadable disc. Even on brand new games! I presume these cheapskates merely replaced a board inside my original unit and kept the rest of the hardware. Plastered a new serial number on the back, twice as big as the old one.
Next visit with my shrink, I'll tell her about these recurring nightmares. I dial 1-800-4my-xbox. Get to talk for 5 minutes with a robot named Max. Then wait for an offshore attendant who speaks garbled English, and cannot spell Los Angeles, no matter how many times I repeat it. After wasting another hour of my life, they tell me to ship back this dud in cardboard coffin. Sheesh, this bites.
If I have any advice to give, this is it. Buy your next game system from Costco. Not Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. 'Cause you don't want to go through the telephone shuffle. Just swap it 1 for 1 with a brand new unit.

I spoke with a Microsoft rep this morning. Here is the scoop. A repaired console has a 90-day warranty from date of repair. However, and this is the big concession, the warranty may be extended beyond that period depending on what the problem turns out to be. I'm assuming that if you get the blinking red light error condition again, you will be covered beyond the 90 days. Whether you choose to buy an extended warranty based on this information is up to you. I'd strongly consider it 3 months from now, but not this instant.
GBO Possum 02-02-07, 05:05 PM It kind of annoyed me that due to a wheel firmware problem, two Wireless Racing Wheels won't concurrently connect to one Xbox 360.
Then I got really ticked off to find that BOTH wheels I had bought had defective D-pads (left movement was hosed on both). So I sent them off to the Repair Center (at my expense), and duly received a nice replacement wheel with a good D-pad. Yep, sent in two wheels and got one back!
After a few phone calls to the Xbox support people, I've found the issue. It seems that their ticket system only allows one repair per ticket, so they had to open a second ticket for the second wheel. They figured this out two weeks after UPS delivered the two wheels to the repair center (January 15th), but only because I kept following up via the phone.
I should have been concerned way back on day 1 when I reported the problem with the wheels and the Xbox 360 Accessories support guy asked me "who is the manufacturer of the Wireless Racing Wheel".
So the moral of the story is, get a ticket number for every problem/device, and don't be in a hurry.
PS I am assured that the firmware problem that I mentioned above has a cure - they send out a device that looks like the battery and it updates the wheel firmware. If I ever get my second wheel back, I'll be testing it and, like Don Quixote, tilt at the Xbox Support windmill again.
Mikey Palmice 02-04-07, 09:50 PM My build date was the same as yours. It is currently on its way to be repaired. What was your problem?
They quoted me $136 for the repair, plus the $35 to ship it UPS.
After they repair your unit, you get an additional 90 days warranty. You can then extend the warranty an additional 2 years before that 90 days is up if you wish.
I have never repaired my system, but I will have had it for a year next month. Can I still buy the exteneded warranty?
doctorgonzo 02-05-07, 12:13 AM My situation:
xbox360 connected to an LG 42LC2D via VGA cable.
Was working just fine 2 days ago, but now it seems there's no video signal going through - audio is making it fine to the tv but no video. I thought it might just be a faulty vga cable so I swapped it out for the component cable and same issue - have sound but no video. Just to make sure it wasn't my tv, I tried hooking up the xbox to my computer monitor - same problem. I've quadruple checked connections - everything is connected tight, nothing is loose.
One thing I should mention, before this happenned - I was having a weird video output issue with the xbox - occasionally all the colors would get messed up. Here are some pictures that I took of the issue:

I have almost the same problem, except that my drive opens and closes correctly. It just started freezing up all the time, especially during texas hold 'em and GOW. Also, I get the "please insert this disc into an xbox 360 console" screen 9 or 10 times before the game will work. I am going to call MS tonight and see what I can find out. I'll post back soon.
fiveprime 02-16-07, 09:47 AM About 3 weeks ago my 360 died with the red lights of death. So I sent it back to Microsoft to get it repaired. I received a working 360 via UPS yesterday. It took me a few minutes to get some network issues ironed out with the new 360 since it has a different MAC address than the old one but other than that it seems to be working well.
One odd thing I did notice about the new 360 is that the power button on the front of this system is different than the power button on the one I sent in. It looks like the same power button, but it doesn't depress like on the old one did. On my old 360 you could hear and feel the power button click when it was pressed. The button on the new 360 doesn't click. It feels like you're pushing on a piece plastic connected to the front panel of the case. It's hard to press and it has very little "give" to it. Is it normal for the Xbox360 power switch to not click when pressed?
I usually turn the machine on and off with the controller, so hopefully this isn't a big deal anyway. I was just wondering...
andsel99 02-17-07, 10:49 AM im having problems connecting onto levels eder dam, fuel plant, argentan and the single player mode, on call of duty 3 i go to join them and it just takes me to the xbox main menu.

Yea lol and i think you guys get the point. Standing there for 35 minutes pressing the button or closing it from dashboard until it stays shut.lol
Morter Forker 02-18-07, 04:25 PM Help! Am I freaking out or experiencing something everyone does? Potential Ghosting
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
First time poster, new reader to this forum. I purchased an olevia 337h from frys electronics just two days ago. I have an xbox 360 hooked up via vga or component. On vga I notice the line going up vertically a lot more than with the component. On both it seems when I am in an FPS like Rainbow Six: vegas I get a lot of blurring when I spin left and right to look. Also in winning eleven 2k7 when I pass the ball the players blur very very slightly. In battlestations midway if I am looking at the ground with a plane and turn it blurs slightly. Now I was playing on a SDTV before this, and the resolution may have been so bad I just did not notice this, but is what i am experiencing ghosting because of the lcd, or is it the xbox 360 graphics? Any help is greatly appreciated as I am freaking out about it
batotman 02-19-07, 12:20 AM My 360 chokes on anything over 480. It can get jerky in all the games I tried. Sniping is impossible.
480i - perfect on my 27" CRT and 42" Plasma
480p - perfect on my 42" Plasma
720p, 1080i - jerky in Call of Duty 2, Call of Duty 3, Spinter Cell Double Agent.
UGH!
Defeats the purpose of buying a HDTV when this is the result. When I used to be able to flat out destroy my friends I now get my a$$ handed to me.
I also tried this on a 19" Viewsonic LCD and exact same results. I tried all resolutions with the VGA cable and Component settings.
Any clues?
batotman 02-19-07, 04:34 PM Another 360 does the same as my last post (see above this one).
chrisherbert 02-19-07, 05:32 PM Help! Am I freaking out or experiencing something everyone does? Potential Ghosting
When using component, make sure that the "HDTV" switch on the cables is set properly. With VGA the line that you see going up the screen is probably tearing. What does the line look like?
spincut 02-19-07, 10:47 PM my Xbox is hooked up to my receiver via component, and the receiver, a Sony STR-DG1000 upscales everything to hdmi. Anyway i intermittently lose video, and i either have to restart the xbox or reseat the HDMI cable (the one hooked up from my receiver to my TV) to get the picture back (reseated the componet cable coming from the xbox also works but hdmi is easier to unplug and plug in).
anyone know why this happens? is it just the xbox signal not cooperating with the hdmi cable once it gets through the receiver and it canceling it out when it gets testy? would a 360 software update ever fix this problem (perhaps once they make the 360 more hdmi friendly in general?)
also, is there a list anywhere which 1080p tv's can handle the 1080p component signal from the xbox360 and which ones cant? cause apparently it's different internal AD's that cause some to work and some not (for the moment, why didnt they make the firmware firendly to all ad's? or will they?).
blklacker 02-19-07, 10:51 PM My 2nd 360 died its only been 1 year, I cannot believe how cheaply built this system is. I give up with MS, now im hearing their re releasing the same 360 with features that should have been included in the beginning. I so threw with MS such a rip off. Im going to be just find with my ps3
throwback559 02-20-07, 07:12 PM i have a problem getting online last night was playing and Internet just logged off .
you know how you test connection well everything was fine expect for
MTU ? what is that and why cant i log back in ?
spincut 02-22-07, 12:26 AM anyone know anything about my problem? is ithe video signal kicking out like that at least a common sympton of HDMI DRM/Handshaking issue? i just want to make sure my receiver itsnt broken and it's just a lame HDMI compatability glitch.
mikemorel 02-22-07, 01:00 PM Yesterday morning (2/21) @ 7:00am EST I installed a "software update" - didn't seem like I had a choice. After that, it seems that I have ceased to get audio from my optical output (can't tell for sure, I went to work - the kids reported it  . I can get analog stereo into my Denon receiver, but no optical. Anyone else download the update? Anyone who was using optical out to a receiver?
I have the HD DVD add-on.
kevinct 02-22-07, 11:47 PM Because I have nothing better to do, I've read EVERY post in this thread, and none of them address the issue I've been having (I know, I'm lucky like that). I have a Sony 60A2000, with the 360 hooked up to it via component in video 4. On average, once every two or three times I power on, the system will start up, but nothing will show on screen and my "mini ring of light" on the controller will just flash repeatedly in all quadrants like it is looking for the 360 but can't find it. The 360 power light is on, and while the ring will circle initially, like it's going to find a controller, the light in the middle of the button will glow, but no quadrants will be illuminated. At that point, the only thing to do is turn the thing off manually and turn it back on. When this happens, I can't play a game or DVD, even though I can get the tray to eject by pushing the button on the console itself.
Other than this, no in game freezes, but this is driving me crazy, especially because it doesn't always happen, but has been an intermittent problem since I got it in December. Batteries are charged in the controllers, and it's not a synching issue between the controllers and the console; I tried that. Power brick is plugged into the wall outlet, not a strip.
8-29-06 MFG date. The console has been super loud since day one. It sounds like the thing's gonna zoom out of the room any minute.
For the love of God, will one of you geniuses tell me what in the world is up with my baby?!
kevinct 02-22-07, 11:51 PM Oh yeah, and when I DO get the console to power on correctly, is it normal for lightning to shoot out of my speakers and my cell phone to start ringing?
Just kidding about these last ones (although I bet it's happened).

I did not see an update. Was it a dashboard update or a game update that happened when you started up a game? If the latter, what game?
Now something is wrong with the dvd drive. It causes this message to come up: unreadable disc. Even on brand new games!
I'm having this same problem with a 360 that's just shy of 3 months old (brand new, not refurb). Got it from Wal Mart and with all the troubles I've read about I'm thinking about just trying to return it (90 day return policy). I like the console more than I thought I would, so maybe I'll just pick one up again when/if it gets more reliable. Worst case scenario they will probably at least let me exchange it for a new one, hopefully with the newer DVD drive. I'll just have to see what my options are. The other night I also had the problem with the tray not staying closed, but it was a one-time thing.
I had crashes and unreadable disc errors in GOW, it won't play a dvd movie no matter what I tried but the movie played fine in my other dvd players, also when playing Red Dead Revolver which is on the BC list it keeps crashing I even exchanged the disc and it still does it always in that game. The good thing Crackdown is playing fine, but I just have a bad feeling about this, I don't qualify for the 1 year warranty since I bought it in 2006 and I was real stupid not to pick up the extended warranty at Gamestop. The thing was at the time I had thought for sure the problems with launch systems would have been worked out and I didn't pay that much attention to the complaints.
I guess if mine finally does completely die $140 is better than buying a new system, but Microsoft really has to figure out whats going on with these systems so people getting the refurbs don't keep going through this headache. Offering a free older 1st party game would help also, I mean turnaround time seems to be 2 weeks thats not fun when you want to play your system.

Is it possible for you to repro that graphical weirdness on the dashboard while online or watching a video or something? And come up with exact steps for how you get that strange pattern.
If you can get it to repro in the dashboard and PM me your SR# I will see what I can do. I am only a random employee though so no promises.
Hi, my xbox complains about the CD being unreadible from time to time. The game would start fine and I can play for a while. Then it would come with with the disc error. The xbox doesn't freeze. I can play again after I eject the disc and put it back in. It doesn't happen a lot, but enough. I only have GOW and GRAW, and happened to both. Has anyone else seen this before? Does that mean my cd-rom drive is defective.
vanilla rice 03-02-07, 10:35 PM i've got a launch 360 and it only recently crashed (3 red lights). so i guess i'm relatively lucky?
anyways i wanted to ask: will HDDVD decoding make the 360 work harder/hotter than playing games?
anyways i wanted to ask: will HDDVD decoding make the 360 work harder/hotter than playing games?
How much work it takes to decode an HD DVD movie is different for each movie. For VC-1 movies which is most of what is out there I would expect it to be less than our demanding games. For certain high bitrate H.264 movies it is going to be the same.
The team that wrote the HD DVD player, of which I am a member knows the 360 hardware quite well and as a result we were able to extract quite a bit of power from the machine. But a good game developer can do the same thing. Plus unlike a game developer we don't make the content so we have to leave some wiggle room in there that a game developer who is in control of all content in that title does not need to leave.
motorhead7319 03-07-07, 03:21 AM Hopefully this isn't just me. I just purchased a 360 brand new from walmart a week ago. I have a VGA cable from the 360 to my LCD monitor and set at 1080p which my monitor excepts over VGA. The problem is occasionally i will get a horizontal line across the screen not always in the same spot either. It is almost like someone cut the screen in the certain spot and the top and bottom picture arent perfectly alligned, they are like a tiny off from one another just enought to notice. Anyone else ever have this happen? i tried my tv over other connections and even switched to cable right away to see if the line was on my tv and it wasn't so i assume it is the 360?

is the line only there for a split second? sounds like a page tear to me. google "v-sync wiki"
motorhead7319 03-07-07, 09:40 AM No it's there alot longer than a second it stays there until the tv is changed to another input or after the xbox is paused for awhile then it goes away.
chrisherbert 03-08-07, 01:09 AM I just got my "new" 360 back from the repair center (old broken one was manufactured 11/05, new broken one is 12/05), and it died on the same day. Pretty pathetic. At least it's under warranty. I wonder if they'll give me one that's a more recent vintage this time?
wisardd 03-18-07, 12:52 PM I have vista ultimate and a new xbox 360. I can find media through the computer on the media blade, but xbox cannot find wmc. I constantly get a message that it can't be found. I spent several hours with Dlink opening all the ports and twice that with wmc support from microsoft and they could not help with the problem. They said call back!
I just want to access media center. My computer has found xbox, I've used the add an extender on media center, typed in 8 digit code to no avail.
todd2112 03-19-07, 12:26 PM My 360 started freezing recently. I have had it for a little over a year. I tried all the troubleshooting techniques such as clearing the cache etc.
Nothing has worked so far. I do not get any error messages or rings of light errors. Some games just freeze on me from time to time. I have lived with this for about 2 months, but recently got Lost Planet, and it is basically unplayable. It freezes constantly.
Oh, when using as a dvd player, the console has never froze and it has never froze on the dashboard.
Edit: Saw another post about the jaggies on PGR and yes I have received those as well.
Gargoyle_AA2 03-19-07, 12:40 PM My 6/06 manufactured 360 got sent back for repair this morning. Started freezing up on all disk games. Would occasionally freeze on an arcade game. Once it would freeze and I turned it off and back on it would then freeze on the boot screen. Had it in a well ventalated area, so it shouldn't have been overheating, plus it would only be on a couple minutes before it froze. I tried all the fixes, cleared the cache, tried another profile, no luck.
It sucks that is broke, but I'm glad I bought the extended warranty.

Hey there. That pic looks exactly like what started for me tonight. My 360 freezes, and then these weird lines occur across the entire screen in different colors. What is the problem anyway? And can I fix it?

TimothyB 03-20-07, 03:37 AM I'm having an issue. I just got a new 32inch LCD in my bedroom and a Vista machine so I wanted to use a 360 as a media center extender.
I have 2 360s and the louder one (fan noise) in my bedroom and it worked perfectly fine with the ethernet cable and it detected media center fine and worked beautifully. But then I thought, man is it noisy, I should use the other that's quieter since I sit so close to it.
I bring in the other one. I connect it to the same network cable the noisy 360 had been using. I sign into Live perfectly fine. I then got to media center option in the 360 to set that up and that's where I run into trouble.
At that point, the 360 has a problem detecting PCs, it can't find the media center. This is even more strange by the fact that Vista detected the 360 Extender on the network and was awaiting the setup-key from the 360, but of course I can get it unless the 360 detects something.
So why does one 360 detect PCs and work with Media Center and another completely fails, and on the same connection cable.

Well, I solved it:
I went into Media Center and went to settings and then extender options. I saw two 360s there, one that looks setup right with a key, another that must be the one that failed. I then uninstalled it.
The 360 still did not detect the PC when went to media center. Though, I noticed an option I didn't see before, I don't know if it was there before or just appeared because of what I did to media center. But this option for the y-button is to setup a new connection. I swear all the previous times I looked at the options at this screen only took me to network connection areas and such. This time though it took me to a new media center window and it finally gave me the setup-key and all is well now.
I hope I just didn't overlook that because I swear I would have noticed it before. Maybe it worked this time because I uninstalled the stuff media center already had for it.

Plowboy 03-21-07, 08:25 AM I have attempted to find my problem on this thread and the CRT thread, but to no avail.
I have a 360 connected to my Sony KV27xxx through S-video, and periodically the screen will simply disappear. The audio is fine. Sometimes the video will simply flash away, and othertimes will remain off for several seconds. This has occurred with both games and DVD movies. It typically happens after an hour or two of watching. I can switch the TV to another input and it works fine leading me to believe its the XBOX. From other posts I know to have the XBOX standing vertical for better cooling. Also, the XBOX doesn't get very hot just watching movies so I don't know if its really an overheating issue.
I have read that Sony Trinitrons have symptoms like this, but would it be tied to a single input. Anyway, just looking for help.
Thanks.
Kevin1358 03-21-07, 08:59 AM I have a lcd hdtv (1080i, 720p), sony kdl-40S2010. I've been trying to switch the resolution in console settings to 1080i or even 720p and it keeps defaulting to 480p. I've talked to Sony and they say that the tv accepts these signals. I'm not sure if the av component cable is faulty or that it's an xbox problem with syncing to my tv. Any suggestions? I do have a VGA input from the tv but I'm not sure if thats the way to go.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the same problems with the blurring occuring, especially in R6:Vegas. I have had two different Sony RPLCD's (currently KDF-46E2000) and a Samsung DLP (HLS4676) hooked up and the blurring was the same with both of them. A friend has the same Samsung hooked up and does not experience this effect.
I was wondering if you solved this or if anyone else may know how to cure this.
Also, with the KDF-46 I have been seeing more screen door effect than with the 42" model, would anyone know how to solve this?
Many thanks for any help.
Thirsty 03-22-07, 11:26 AM My 360 now has green jagged lines running across a black screen....I guess it finally died. Bought it at launch. My 4 yr old XBOX still works great. I guess I am going old school for awhile.
Problem w/ Denon 3805 optical digital input:
When playing Graw and Graw2, loud low freq sounds (tank explosions, ..) trip my Denon 3805 into protection mode. I am not using the amps in the 3805, just running 5.1 pre-outs to another multi-channel linestage.
Anyone know of a work-around to this problem? Any help would be much appreciated.

chrisherbert 04-04-07, 12:24 PM Well my third xbox just died after a couple of days. Horrible grinding noise from the drive and it won't play games at all. DVD movies seem to work okay, and the anything not involving game disks is fine (arcade, demos, music/video streaming, etc).
The support people were pretty nice and said that my ticket was being "escalated." I spoke to a manager. I don't know what difference that'll make though, seems likely that they'll just sent me a fourth defective replacement.
kbuckner007 04-05-07, 03:22 AM Just sell the 360 and get a ps3. You will not look back. These things are pieces of ****.
chrisherbert 04-05-07, 04:02 PM The problem is that xbox seems to be better in every way other than reliability...
RGGRAVEN 04-10-07, 04:21 PM My 360 stays on after I turn it off. Like the lights are off, but it's still trying to read game discs. I've called microsoft, but they want me to pay 100 something dollars to fix it (bought mine near launch, no warranty).
i got a really strange problem...When I play music thru the 360 (CD, of HDD, streaming from PC) My sub is not working. This problem just started. The optical cable is pluged in I can see the redlight so I know its working. I have the audio setting set for Dolby Digital on the 360. When I watch a movie or game trailer sub is working great, but When i play music its like the signal is not being sent. I also, in the middle of a song, went to the system blade on the 360 and changed the audio output to Digital Stereo..and whata know the sub starts thumping again. Switch it back to Dolby Digital, where it has always been, no Bass...just very tinny music. I see my receiver is getting the Digital signal because it is indicated on the receiver. Ive had the system since day 1..it did go back for repair in NOv '06 due to the red lights of death, but since then its been great. So... has there been an update that changed something or does my BOX need repair again?? Anybody else have this happen???? Im stumped.
R00st3r 04-11-07, 05:27 PM I probably know the answer to this, but watching HDDVD's on the external HDDVD player sux because of the noise coming from the xbox 360. HOW IN THE WORLD COULD THEY EVER THINK THIS COULD BE USE FOR HD MOVIE EXPERIENCE??? Maybe if it was in another room!!!
Something good would be to disable or idle the DVD drive on the console while using the HDDVD player. Quiet scenes are ruined by the excessive noise. I got a great picture now, but went 2 steps back on the sound. Even DTS and 5.1 are practically drowned out during quite scenes. I saw the process of putting the padding in the system after opening the console http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,2066860,00.asp?kc=ETRSS02129TX1K0000532 , but forget that. I'm not voiding the warranty on a $600 equipment.
Anyone got any advice?

Your DVD player shouldn't be playing if you're watching a HD-DVD. That would mean both your HD-DVD drive AND your DVD player both have discs in them and are spinning at the same time.
I'm guessing the sound you're hearing is the 360 body fans whirring while the 360 is in idle. When you watch an HD-DVD, your 360 is pretty much in idle.
The only audio problem I have with my 360 is when I'm playing a DVD or game in the DVD drive. When it's idle, or if I'm watching a HD-DVD, my Moxi DVR is louder than my 360.
Also, you state your DTS is drowned out during quiet portions of your movies. The HD-DVD drive does not currently support DTS output.

poisonxfree 04-14-07, 08:10 PM Has anyone had a lot of trouble getting the optical audio cable to stay in the back of the 360's AV cable? I can't get it to stay in there well at all. I've been wiggling it and pushing it in but it won't get a snug fit. I tried it on the AV cable with my 360, and my roommate's, but same problem. And yes, I'm putting it in the right way. Thanks for any suggestions.

Macros73 04-15-07, 08:29 PM Optical Audio Problem - No Center Channel?
I just noticed this issue today, but I don't know that anything has changed.
My Xbox 360 is hooked up to a Pioneer VSX-815 via Optical. The Xbox 360 is set to DD w/WMA, but I have tried just DD 5.1 as well.
I have sound on all channels except the center channel. There is simply no sound on the center channel.
If I switch to the FM radio input or my HD-DVD player, there is sound on the center channel. If I move the 360 Optical to another optical input on the receiver, there is no change.
Anyone else having similar problems?
Hi all,
Im having trouble chatting with 2 or 3 friends on xbox 360 live. I can chat with certain people but not others. I have a very fast cable connection (optimum online) with a Scientific Atlanta cable modem and a D-Link DI-624 router with firmware 2.53.
When I test my xbox live settings on the xbox, everything comes up normal (NAT is open) and I have a strong connection wirelessly. Any ideas as to why certain people cant chat with me, but others can?
thanks,
Tom

Tom, do you mean in game channels? In private chat you can only do one-on-one chats.
In game channels it may just be how that person is connecting to the server. You can also have them plug/unplug their mics just to do some basic troubleshooting.
If you're doing one-on-one chats, and you can't hear certain people, go into a game room and see if you can hear them inside the room. If that's the case, then at least you know the connection has something to do with a direct connection between the two of you.
Hope that helps,

I am having a similar problem but my sub will not work when the 360 is set to Dolby Digital 5.1. This problem just started for myself as well.(see my post just above yours) I tried to call the 360 support but got some dumb a$$ who told me it was my Sub. But if you check out MS website,( google search 360 sound problem) they acknowledge the problem. You should probably check out the website and then call MS for repair if you have a warranty. Hope that helps.
bloodta 04-21-07, 12:07 AM Sending in my 3rd 360 tomorrow morning. First one I had for a year, Second one (brand new) I had it for about 3 months, and this one I had for less than a month. I talked to a Service Rep, they apologized and kept stating that I should not be having this problem (no crap, bunch of rocket scientists they got working there). First XBOX gave me the rings o' death, the 2nd one quit playing my games, wouldn't even read them, and the 3rd one gave me the rings o' death and error codes E71 and E79. They are not going to simply replace this unit, they are gonna try to fix it and make sure it is not one of my accessories that may be causing the problem. Microsoft could learn a thing or two from Nintendo as far as build quality. I wish my XBOX had balls so I could kick them.
today my xbox started beeping and than green and white checkered boxes appeared on the screen and it froze, is this a ram failure? what causes this problem?
After trying to deal with Microsoft for a few weeks now and always getting the "don't move the unit when there is a disc inside" comment, I have pretty much given up. I have never moved the unit, it is securley placed on a shelf and not close to a speaker or sub. Yet it every now and then freezes up, wierd sounds come from it, and then I am told that it cannot read the disc. I take the disc out and it is all scratched. So far I have been able to resurface the discs so the work again, but I am kinda affraid to play it to be honest. So what should I do...keep on talking to microsoft and hope for the best or will the Elite be less likely to suffer from these problems?
Problem w/ Denon 3805 optical digital input:
When playing Graw and Graw2, loud low freq sounds (tank explosions, ..) trip my Denon 3805 into protection mode. I am not using the amps in the 3805, just running 5.1 pre-outs to another multi-channel linestage.
Anyone know of a work-around to this problem? Any help would be much appreciated.
Mike
Hi Mike,
I just hooked up the optical to a Sony 5200ES and the exact same protection mode fault happened. I was online playing Lost Planet, system is not up very loud, I noticed that low freq sounds made the video onscreen flash a little (did you notice this?) and then... boom. A VS exploded and the receiver faulted and powered off. If anyone else is experiencing this and has some advice please let us know. I will keep experimenting for cause/solution.

woke up this morning, 3 red lights! awesome, now I don't even have to try to play - before it would just freeze after 10-20 min of gameplay - now i can get some sun lol
R00st3r 04-25-07, 01:03 AM 'm guessing the sound you're hearing is the 360 body fans whirring while the 360 is in idle. When you watch an HD-DVD, your 360 is pretty much in idle.
Well, regardless, the fans on the 360 are working overtime if I am watching the HD-DVD player. So even if the 360 is "idle" isn't it still processing the HD video thru the console? If not, why are the fans so loud if the console is at "idle" when watching an HD-DVD? Is there a setting to turn those off, or at least down?

Is it still under warranty? If so, I would tell them you need to send it in. Weird sounds and freezing up are not a good combination and they should fix it under warranty. Sounds like the drive is going bad. I've never tried to fix one with that combination of problems. If you would have to replace the drive at your expense, then it would probably not be worth doing as a self repair. Which means you would have to negotiate with MS for the cost and I have read where people have gotten that for as cheap as $70. Not really that bad considering you get a one year warranty with it. Of course, an Elite looks mighty tempting. :D
My new copy of HD DVE won't work.
You have to wait for the spring update in a couple of weeks and then it will be fine. Or so I read in the Insiders Thread.
Yeah, its still under warranty and I am on it again with Microsoft and it looks like it might work out. Its the wierdst thing how it can run for days without problems and then all of a sudden the game freezes and the disc is badly scratched. Have done a lot of research on it and Microsoft is aware of it, but I think as of yet its not big enough of a problem to warrant them really fixing it.
I bought my 360 in December 06. Do I need to install the spring update of last year onto it or does it come installed already.
dreamstate 05-03-07, 08:25 PM Well, for some strange reason I can't connect to Live at all. I keep failing the second test. There's nothing wrong with my broadband connection, as simply unplugging the cable from the xbox360 and connecting to my pc gives me instant internet. This is a recent problem, i bought the 360 in December and haven't had problems till a month ago.
The first time this happened i tried unplugging everything and found that when i unplugged my mp3 player that was in one of the usb connectors i could get on live again. Plugged in the internet today and the problem is back. I haven't changed any settings on the xbox from day 1.
Any suggestions?
Thanks!

A while back I updated my Linksys router firmware with DD-WRT and my 360 no longer would access the internet (wired) even though my computers and phones worked fine. I had to restore the default router firmware to get the 360 connected again.
dreamstate 05-03-07, 10:28 PM I don't use a router, just a cable modem, no firmware to update.
After about 6 total hours of trial and error i fixed the problem by setting all my internet values to zero/manual, then resetting them to automatic. Man this thing is infested with bugs. This will be the last MS product i will ever purchase.
NewOrlnsDukie 05-04-07, 02:30 AM so THIS is what it like to have the 360 crump on ya.
Really sucks. :(
Here's my situation.
Last night I turned on my 360 (connected via VGA at 1080p on my Samsung 71-inch DLP) and the picture looked horrible (it's always looked incredible in the past). I just figured I should reboot b/c maybe it was just a temporary glitch. So I powered both off and on (yes, that is ALL that I did), and suddenly I got a 'mode not supported' notification from my Sammy, w/ a blank black screen on VGA. There were no red rings, and the 360 was still booting, as I could still hear it.
It made no sense that it would suddenly no longer work on my display. It's always worked w/o difficulty. Nevertheless, I went one step at a time and did the following (in order), and each step failed to result in any image being displayed on the screen.
1) Tried it with component cables
2) Tried it w/ composite cables
3) Tried it on VGA, component, and composite on my 42-inch 1080p Westy (where it has always worked previously as well). The TV didn't register any signal coming through on any of the 3 inputs
4) Tried resetting the 360 to default resolution by holding down the Y and RT buttons at startup, thereby causing a reboot that should've gone to the default resolution.
5) Tried navigating through the menus by using a set of instructions I had seen for setting the resolution back to default just using the audio.
EVERY ONE OF THESE INTERVENTIONS FAILED TO BRING UP ANY VIDEO WHATSOEVER USING ANY OF THE INPUTS OR CABLES (and on both TV's).
Any advice? Anyone had this happen to him before?
Brainodo 05-05-07, 02:54 PM My second box just bricked. Got the three red lights, took off the HD adn unplugged everything, got it to work for five minutes, then it crashed. Now nothing but three red lights. Well ventilated and cared for, so these things must have some fundamental flaw in a good many of them.
Called support, got someone who could understand me (unlike a year ago) and have to pay as I'm out of warranty. As it's my second though, they took 25% off and for some reason they can only send me a Core so they're upping that to 50%.
Had a rotten couple of weeks, so this is just the crowning turd in the waterpipe.
Ah well...
PigeonBomb 05-06-07, 10:33 PM My 360 (purchased in December) started freezing up on me. A few weeks after I bought it March Madness froze up randomly a couple times, thought it just came with the territory. Had no other freezing issues with other games.
Until 2 weeks ago when Battlefield II all of the sudden froze up in the middle of a Live session. Rebooted. Played for about another hour. Froze again. Put in Gears. Froze after a game or 2. Called support. Went thru the automated crap. Tried Battlefield II again. Froze again. Gave up. Tried the next day. Played a few games. Froze up again. Reboot. Then it would freeze almost immediately after loading a game.
Good thing for me Microsoft extended the warranty period to a year. I sent it in a week and a half ago free of charge. It's being delivered to me this Tuesday. The tech said it was a "same unit repair" - so apparently they fixed my machine instead of sending me a new unit. I was hoping they'd send me an Elite... ;)
A gaming buddy of mine sent me an e-mail asking where I've been on Live. Told him my story. The very next day, I kid you not, he said his was starting to freeze up too...
Man I hope they fix this crap.
Lagomorph 05-07-07, 06:37 AM When I try to hook my Xbox 360 up to my new TV with anything other than the generic RCA cables (yellow/white/red) it simply refuses to see the signal. I went slowly, step by painstaking step over the instructions again and again and nothing. HD AV plugged into 360, switch flipped to HD, all 5 components plugged into proper plugs on TV, but no signal at all. Went and bought one of those universal AV cables with an Svideo plug and same thing. Plugged it in and go no signal. On both cables the RCA still works, but nothing any higher. TV model RPT5V24D by Viore. *bangs head on wall*

I'd estimate that more than half the people who own this thing are in the same boat. I treat my stuff very well and mine has been freezing, not booting since day one. It's to bad M$ has gotten so big again that they can afford to not give a **** about QC on their products. I get 3 red lights on first boot and about 10 after every time. I'm just to lazy to send it in.
teckademic 05-08-07, 07:01 AM not really a problem, but more of an issue regarding auto download for XBLA. It never works! I would assume that auto download meant that the 360 would automatically download new XBLA games without having to look for them on marketplace, but not once has it ever downloaded a game without me having to download it. Am I wrong about this feature? Suggestions?

i've noticed this as well. only when i enter Live Arcade does my system recognize new demos to download. it will put them into the active downloads list then, but only then. maybe the 360 needs to be on like for a minute without any activity from your end, then it checks the arcade for new games. i bet thats whats up.
teckademic 05-08-07, 11:34 PM maybe, I'll have to try that.
TheEvilWeevil 05-09-07, 02:34 AM ok, i have a problem with the video on my 360 that i cannot find an answer for anywhere else. during most games ive tested the video can become disjointed in the middle of the screen when theres a good amount of movement happening on the screen. parts of the screen actually look like they're shifting for a moment. this is most obvious when the guide button is used when the dashboard leaves the screen. this does not happen with movies. i have a standard definition tv (the only one in my apartment) and ive checked all connections. the tv set is probably 10 years old but havent had problems with any other systems/devices. any ideas?
nnarum23 05-10-07, 06:14 PM Since the Spring update, my XBL gamertag still auto logs in, but does not auto connect to XBL. It sits right there at "Connect to Xbox Live". I CAN connect, but I want it to do it automatically. Anyone else have this problem?
I've been having an odd problem ever since I downloaded the Spring update. It takes an extremely long time to download anything from Xbox Live. I woke up this morning to download the Forza 2 demo, came back 30 minutes later, and the damn progress bar was still only at 1%.
I canceled the download, restarted my router and 360 and tried to download something else and experienced the same problem. It took me almost 20 minutes to download a 6.7MB file. I am using a 3Mb DSL connection and my 360 is hooked up through the wireless adapter. I have also tried an ethernet cable and experience the same problems. No such problems on both of my computers though.

Yes, I've been having this same problem since I bought an Elite & recovered my Gamertag. When I turn on the Elite, it signs me in but doesn't connect to live.
Then, when I select connect to live, it makes me test my connection every time (and does so successfully). Not really a showstopper, but a PITA and not sure why it happens...

You and Lagomorph have the same problem as me
My 360 was working fine on Sunday I just purchased a new hdtv it's been working fine. Then all of a sudden no audio or video and i tried plugging it every single combonation .i don't know if need to buy a new cable or what .This sucks!

Same here. Although occasionaly it will work. I dont get it.
Whats worse is that now it keeps freezing. During games, XBLA games, the dashboard, doesnt seem to matter. I bought it in December and take good care of it. Its well ventilated and I rarely play for more than 3 hours at a time.
It seems this is a common situation although I am unaware of a solution. Anybody have any thoughts?
Dont know if this makes a difference but I rented Crackdown today and downloaded the update when prompted. Within 30 min the 360 froze twice, and again an hour or so later.(This was the first time it has ever froze on the dashboard)

I'm not sure why your 360 is so loud in idle. I have noted that my 360 is louder in idle if a disc (game or standard DVD) is in the game/dvd drive. If it is, for some reason my 360 is running another element, which I can hear. Whenever I watch an HD-DVD, I always remove whatever is in the standard drive.
Other than that, your machine should be almost silent when running your HD-DVDs. I just turned mine on and it's very quiet. I gave Planet Earth and Chronicles of Riddick a try.
Of course, what's loud to each of us is different and subjective. My 360 when in idle is drowned out by the loud whir of my Moxi DVR. However, for you, my DVR might seem ridiculously loud. :)

Hi there
I have an xbox 360 with the componenet cables its came with. I have hooked these to my samsung 32 inch 73bd lcd tv.
Whenever I play any games on this, I get a pretty bad picture!
What I mean by this is the picture seems to be.... out of synch like a tv not tuned property, there are horizontal lines all over the place. It is still playable but off putting!
does any one have any ideas?
I wonder whether this is because of
a: my component cable
b: tv is buggered after only 4 weeks
c: xbox is buggered..pls tell me this is not the case!
am goign to friends house to try and his sony bravia lcd and see if same happens.
any help would be great
thank you
amir-hk240 05-17-07, 10:36 PM FWIW my 360 freezes up all the time.
FWIW my 360 freezes up all the time.
Guess Ill just deal with it. It really doesnt bother too much, just makes me think the end is near. Lets hope not, eh?
Union0015 05-18-07, 09:55 AM Strange problem with my 360 Premium after the Spring Update. It freezes whenever I go to reply to a buddy message, or press "back" when navigating my friend's list.
I've only had the system for about three weeks. It is on a open wire rack, so there is literally plenty of air on all sides of it.
Other that that, I haven't really had any problems with it. But thank god I bought this thing at Costco so I can take it back whenever I want. Is there a way to save my game saves though?

Hi. I bought my 360 Premium in January. Starting making loud noises, Sun. May 6th, then got an error that I needed to clean my disc because it couldn't read it. After that it wouldn't read any of my game discs. Called support that night, couldn't believe when they told me I would have to wait 4 days for the return box to be mailed to me. Anyway, I sent the console in this past week. Hoping I get it back by next weekend. I hope they send me an Elite also but not holding my breath.
Is it a coincidence or does it seem that there are a lot of the consoles bought around the end of '06'/beginning of '07' that are having a problem? They are less then a year old and already going bad. Any polls or surveys out there keeping track of this type of information?

Check to make sure your Microsoft component cables are set to HDTV, there is a setting on the cable itself. Go into your console setup and make sure all of your HDTV settings are correct. Switch between different resolutions to see if some work better than others. Hopefully that'll help!

rahimlee54 05-21-07, 08:20 PM I just got an elite and am having trouble getting my media to stream via my router. I know it is my computer because another computer on the network can stream media so I was wondering if anyone knew how I could fix this problem. I have called the xbox line and they arent very smart and I have used the windows trouble shooting guide and neither of those things work. When I go into my WMP to share the media the network wont recognize the 360 it wont share anything at all not even with another computer over the network if anyone has any ideas that would be really helpful. I have windows XP home with WMP 11.
Thanks

I don't know if this will help but when I was having a problem trying to share my media with my 360 I had to download the Zune program to make it work. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. But when I uninstalled it and tried to just use WMP 11 and follow all the same instructions you did with the guide it wouldn't work. I was told by one of the techs that I needed Zune, even though I have relatives that only have WMP and it works for them just fine. So, maybe you should give the Zune download a try. :)
GBO Possum 05-26-07, 04:53 PM I have three 360s, two premiums and an Elite. This is my first hardware problem with a console.
The second premium (about 6 months old) is acting up. The Ethernet connection no longer works. If I plug a wireless connector into the USB, that works fine.
Looks like my triple-screen Forza 2 experience will be a little delayed. Oh well, I'll content myself with learning the game-play for a while.
Once I got past a complete moron on 1-800-4MY-XBOX who was almost unable to speak except in occasional accented grunts (I'm not kidding), things went very smoothly. The next agent was very articulate, and set up a return very quickly.

Is anyone keeping a record of all these consoles going down within a year? There must be some agency that consumers can complain too. What other product can you buy that you need to repair so soon and that cost hundreds of dollars? Someone should take a survey or poll. My 360 lasted 5 months before I had to send it in for repairs.
ubergynt 05-30-07, 04:48 PM I recently bought an 360 and I´m having trouble with the 5.1 audio. In dashboard I only get audio from the left speaker, for example when I listen to music, shouldn't it come from the center? But when I play regular games like GOW it works fine.
reddevil007 05-30-07, 06:38 PM Someone please HELP!!!!!!!!!!!! This is what PGR 3 looks like ever since about Fall of last year. The first pic clearly shows the jaggies, which show up in every game but are most obvious in this example. The second pic is of what it USED to look like before the issue. It looks smooth in this second image because it's switched to "Photo mode" and I snapped a picture in there. This issue started when I received my system back from repair for an unrelated issue. When I got it back I was forced to do an update and ever since it's looked like crap. Have received multiple replacements from Microsoft and they finally swapped it out for a brand new one. I'm so disgusted. I also get jaggies on my PS3 but to a much lesser extent.. it's actually playbable because it's not that bad. My tv is a Sony KDSR60XBR2. Any ideas why I'm having this issue?

BAMAVADER 05-30-07, 10:39 PM I just purchased a 360. I notice when playing Halo 2 (component video with optical audio hooked up to Harman Kardon 240 receiver) that when there is a lot of intense action, multilple bombs, shooting, etc., that the audio seems garbled. This doesn't happen a lot. Only on occasion. I never noticed this with the regular xbox with optical connection. Can anyone tell me what this is? I am using the component cables that came with the xbox 360 and a monster optical cable. Everything is hooked up right and I have never noticed this before on anything with this receiver. Any help would be appreciated.

I managed to get MS to fix my launch date 360 for 69.95. I explained that they offered to fix all 2005 built 360's and they extended the warranty knowing that they had problems with heat sinks and solder.
I said, Is it my fault i did not use the 360 enough to get it to break within the warranty period. MS knew they had a faulty production run and were essentially recalling all 2005 boxes.
So it turned out to be an OK deal. I get a 2007 refurb instead of a mine back and an additional 1 year warranty on the new one.
RELENTLESS76 06-01-07, 09:26 AM Hi, I have both the Infocus 4805 and Xbox 360. I recently purchased the monster component cables from monster cable. I am still only able to get a screen of 480p. Is this the highest I will be able to achieve? I thought the infocus was capable of putting out 720p to 1080i? If it can be done, please let me know, and how?
Thanks in advance for your help!

You might want to take back the projector. It is not HD. The specs are confusing because it appears to accept HD resolutions but only display in 480p using component connections.
COMPATIBILITY
Video: Component and RGB HDTV (720p, 1035i,
1080i). DVI with HDCP for digital video and
encrypted digital video. Component EDTV (480p,
576p progressive scan), Component, Composite
and S-Video standard TV video (480i, 576i,
composite SCART with adapter, NTSC, NTSC M
4.43, PAL: B, G, H, I, M, N; SECAM: M).
Computer: Digital and analog PC, Macintosh®, up to
1024x768 resolution through intelligent resizing
DISPLAY
Projection System: New TI DarkChip2™ 480p 12° DDR DMD
Resolution: 854 x 480 (16:9)
It MAY display a HD signal using the computer inputs but would not expect much at 1024x768
Also you may want to take back the Monster cables because the ones that come with the 360 are just as good and free.

RELENTLESS76 06-01-07, 10:24 AM Thanks a lot! I appreciate the response. I think I will keep it. Even though its not HD, its still loads of fun.
Thanks again!

hey guys,
I just got a 360 and I have it hooked up using component on a westy, but when im playing forza the bottom third of the screen has a different tint sometimes. Like when you see the split times come up, then the tint shows up in a blue/purple tint.
The xbox menu is fine and the demo of dirt is fine, so I have no clue whats up. Could it be Forza?
xYAHTZEEx 06-02-07, 02:37 PM Hey, im having problems with my Xbox 360 giving me an image through the "high def" component cables. I was able to view an image 2 days through the component cables which are the ones that come with the regular composite cables as well and have the Highdef-Tv switch on the end that goes into the xbox. I have a westinghouse 32 inch i can get teh model number if you need it. When i do turn on my tv and the xbox i get a BLANK GREEN screen on my tv. This appears both when i turn the switch on the hd setting as well as the tv setting. I tried the composite "yellow" cable and it worked but the component won't give me an image.
Thanks for any help,
Matt
chad473 06-06-07, 11:47 AM just a shot in the dark here. my 360 recently stopped reading DL burned discs which I've been using for movies (console is unmodded). I've read about the rubber band fix but I don't want to void the warranty. The drive spins and beeps, but won't read and the dash just says "open tray." Any chance anyone has run into this and found some sort of Macguyver work around that doesn't involve opening it up? For a day or so putting some pressure on the top of the unit got the discs to spin up after 2-3 trys, but now that doesn't even work. The discs worked fine before, burned in udf mode with xbox compat turned on in Nero. Just hoping I might have another option to try instead of going out and buying an external hard drive to hook up over usb. My network is wireless, so streaming isn't an option for HD wmv's. games, and single layer discs still work perfectly.
samsung dvd drive in the unit, btw.
GBO Possum 06-06-07, 02:14 PM Streaming of HD WMVs should work wirelessly. It does for me. Another, maybe clunky, approach is a USB drive.
chad473 06-06-07, 06:28 PM streaming does work, although I get stutters in most movies. Some are unwatchable. I'll probably go the usb route, I'm just hesitant because I just dropped about $200 on a new burner and media in the last month basically for this purpose alone.
Icedtea515 06-13-07, 06:54 PM Having an xboxlive problem:
Been using my xbox with live since I got it (a few months ago) flawlessly until about a month ago.
Now when I go to view the Xboxlive Marketplace it always tells me "the marketplace is unavailable" and I'm not able to accept party invites in Halo 2.
I can still play Halo in Optimatch but if I try to accept a party invite from a friend it errors out with a networking issue.
Any ideas?
Greatly appreciate any help,

Buddy C 06-14-07, 03:10 PM Geez, my 360 fan is really annoying since the last update. If I turn off the 360 with the USB controller charger plugged in, the fan just keeps running and running until I unplug the USB cable. Does it really take that much power to charge a wireless controller battery?

pierce x 06-15-07, 10:55 PM my 1st 360 lasted 11 months before i got the 3 red lights and micrsoft kept it for 6 weeks and now my month old elite is down. It made a loud grinding sound with pgr3 and now any disc I put in it reads unplayable. Not to mention i bought the 360 wheel sat. to play forza2 that comes out tomorrow, the first 360 died 3 days before GOW!
Well i got my ELITE back today and it was replaced and not repaired and they threw in a one month live membership card as a gesture of appreciation oh, they also included a xbox quality survey form to fill out and mail in.
WishIWasFlying 06-19-07, 02:07 PM Has anyone had a problem where their 5.1 audio is lost but when the audio is switched to "Digital Stereo" the audio works?
My Receiver is a Denon AVR-2805. Xbox 360 is using TOSLINK optical cable, it used to work then all of a sudden lost audio. Playing around I was able to successfully get it working in "Digital Stereo" mode. I tried multiple optical inputs on my reciever, different cables, and my stand alone OPPO dvd player works just fine in 5.1 on same receiver/inputs.
I sent my 360 to MS for repair, they sent it back and same issue. What is also odd is that my friends 360 acts the same way on my system, with his cable assembly and with mine.
My next test is to try to see if my 360 is able to send 5.1 audio out through TOSLINK on another friends receiver with optical IN's.
Anyone? Thanks...
heavyness 06-20-07, 12:37 AM just got a onkyo 605b and finally got all the cables i needed in the mail from monoprices.
anyways, can i hook up the 360 using both audio cables?
so i plan on keeping the 360 hooked directly to the tv with it's component cables and red/white audio. but i would like to run an optic audio cable from the 360 directly to the receiver for digital sound.
i want to be able to play the 360 without turning the receiver on, but if wanting to, turn on the receiver and get digital sound. will this work and does this harm the 360 at all?
thanks.
My launch 360 has bricked for the fourth time and thanks to Toys R Us replacement plan, I've received a refund to buy a new one. For some reason they sent back my 360 so I'm wondering, if I buy an elite, can I transfer the contents of my hard drive? I know they have a free migration kit, I'm just worried that maybe my hd was corrupted and would hate to screw up a new elite. Also, any ideas on what to do with the dead 360?
I am writing for me friend because he is unable to get online at this time. He has a panasonic 50 inch and a 360 pro. When he hooks up the 360 anyway posisible and plays first person shooter games and also gutair hero he has a major lag in it. He will push to shoot a a sec later it will shoot. I do not have a 360 myself so do not know much about it at all. He also tryed on a samsung 50 inch and got the same problem. I know cable boxes have output setting. Does the 360 act the same way where the settings just need to be changed or could there be another problem?

using Game Mode on my Sammy makes a big difference, IMO
Hello, lately I have been havingproblems staying connected to Xbox Live. I can coonect no problem but when I'm playing a game it will disconnect me over and over again. I have no problem signing in again, it just won't let me play. I've had this Xbox for almost a year it was brand new, never modified etc.. It's a wired connection to a Netgear router/gateway. Any ideas?
You and Lagomorph have the same problem as me
My 360 was working fine on Sunday I just purchased a new hdtv it's been working fine. Then all of a sudden no audio or video and i tried plugging it every single combonation .i don't know if need to buy a new cable or what .This sucks!
I also have this problem with our Xbox 360 premium. No video or audio through component/composite wires. No red lights. Reset video through the hand controller per Microsoft troubleshooting on line. Set HDTV/TV switch on cable to both positions. Wii works fine on the tv in component and composite modes. I do get audio through the optical port though. I did try to adjust pins on the audio/video connector on the machine with a tiny screwdriver. Got video once after doing that. Then it went blank again.
Out of warranty.
Any suggestions?
heavyness 06-25-07, 01:22 AM try taking your HDD off and starting it up. also, switch that little switch on the a/v output from the 360 from HDTV to Standard and see if something comes up.

i would guess router problem. also, is anyone using a computer that had a bridge internet connection on the same router? that messes up Xbox Live sometimes. also, the Nintendo Wifi adapter software on WinXP will also kill Xbox Live.

I tried HDD on/off, a/v switch HDTV/STD TV. Reset display settings to default with controller (With Y and right trigger during startup from microsoft support page.) Still no video or audio, (audio thru optical ok), green lights ok, no red lights.
Anyone think it could be the pins on the A/V connection port on the console?
Are all the pins supposed to be exposed or are some of them supposed to be pushed in?
Out of warranty.
Thanks
chad473 06-25-07, 01:32 PM is the repair cycle longer now or something? my box has been sitting in Texas for going on a week and no update at all from either xbox.com or the 1-800 number. Last year the replacement was sent out the same day. I wonder if it's due to this rumored new heatsink?

That's good news. Hopefully this means later units going forward will be more reliable. To bad MS won't just exchange out everyone's thats had problems for one of these with the new heat sinks. It's obvious they realize what the reason for the high failure rates is. Mine is out of warranty so I'm going to be fixing it myself.
If you've had a problem with your 360 and needed to have it repaired, please fill out this survey: http://www.360-gamer.com/xbox360hardwarefailuresurvey.asp

chad473 06-28-07, 01:31 PM 9 business days at the repair center and they still have no idea where my console is. spoke to a supervisor today who "prioritized" my ticket. Of course, he tells me it takes 3 days for this to go through..so into next week..then holiday...I'm guessing another 2 weeks till I might get this back, so probably 5-6 weeks total for the whole process. I could barely understand the guy, and if it hadn't taken my whole lunch break just to get to a supervisor I would have complained more..but I doubt it would have made a difference anyway.

theviceman 07-01-07, 12:03 AM I live in a duplex and I use my landlord's network. It always worked for XBOX LIVE (via the xbox wireless network adapter) and my laptop. Now all of a sudden my 360 cannot find the network (but my laptop does). It isn't totally busted because it locates OTHER NETWORKS, of people who must live farther from me than someone who lives in the same house. Why all of a sudden would my 360 not get the signal it had always picked up previously? My landlord tells me that he has not moved or changed anything.
The 360 only sees his network once every 20 tries and then it doesn't connect because there is no reception, it just finds it for a second then can't connect.
Any suggestions? I just paid for12 more months of live but it does no good when my connection is dead.
Thanks.

I called in originally on June 2. It took over a week to even get the box to ship it in. They received it at the repair facilities on June 15, and didn't ship the replacement until June 27. I should be getting it --finally-- tomorrow.
I think this service is unacceptable, but the fact that they are actually attempting to fix the problem mollifies me somewhat.

Maybe if the wireless router is powered off and back on, the problem will be cleared. I find that about once every maybe 10 days, my home wireless connection no longer works with my 360. My laptop is unaffected.
Power off both my cable modem and my router, then power on the cable modem, wait until its lights are normal, then power on the router. That that fixes the problem.

I'm right there with you. they had mine at the service center for nearly 2 weeks. I got a tracking number on saturday but it hasn't gone anywhere yet, I'm guessing not till monday (at which point it will be 2 weeks since arriving at the service center). A month to get a replacement is unacceptable in my mind as well. Hopefully it has the new heatsink, and I'll cross my fingers that this one can live longer than a year.
Microsoft Covering Up Forza 2 Crash Forum

I reported yesterday on the threads popping up in the official Forza 2 forums claiming that Forza 2 is causing the Xbox 360 to crash. Apparently, now Microsoft has taken steps to cover up the forum that has gained massive attention in the past 24 hours. I am highly dissapointed in this move, considering I am a strong supporter of keeping things public, particularly when there could actually be a problem that consumers should be aware of. I should have screen captured the forums, but the thought that Microsoft might delete them entirely wasn’t a thought in my mind. Hopefully Microsoft will redeem themselves in the near future, and make some public statements concerning the widespread claims that Forza 2 is causing Xbox 360 units to crash. Some reports even claimed that Forza 2 was causing the Xbox to permanently crash. I’m not sure how much of this is reality, but it needs to be addressed immediately.
In what appears to be an effort to conceal the over 900 replies gamers provided on the official Forzamotorsport.net forums about Forza Motorsport 2 crashing on the Xbox 360, Microsoft has deleted the long thread, now stating that it’s “exclusive content for registered forum users” only. However, the thread was removed entirely, even to registered members. This comes after the thread was revealed and reported on yesterday, gaining plenty of attention. In the thread, hundreds of gamers posted their stories on what happened to the 360 when playing Forza 2, and expressed frustration, anger, and disappointment.

Turn10/MS is Not Covering anything up, I dont see you ripping Ubisoft/Redstorm for the GRAW2 Freezing and Ubi Deleting all the Freezing threads.
Also, Out of the 900+ Replies in that thread, 300 of them are not related to the topic, Im Looking at it right now (cleaning the offtopic/namecalling posts out).
Even If 3,000 Players Are having issues, thats 1% of the Total Users that have played online *(not counting people without live), so, thats less than 1%, which pretty much points back to the 360 in itself being a 1 out of 6 being defective or very sensitive to overheating.
GRAW, Oblivion, GRAW2, RB6 Vegas, Gears Of War, and Several other Major Games have all claimed to be killing consoles, Ironic all of them come out a week after a major System Update too. I dont see you blaming the update.
I feel your Pain, My 360 Died, 1 Day before FM2, Demo Ran Fine, Oblivion started Flickering, Aegis Wing looked like it was missing textures, and videos played back scrambled, paid $140, and sent it in took almost a month (like 28 days) to get it back. I Didnt Get any Emails other than the 1st one, I took note the reference number, shipped it, it was signed for on June 7th, and after 3 weeks I decided to check the reference number and low and behold there was 2 tracking numbers, and the 2nd was shipped that day, and it was my new Xbox 360 (Feb-2007 MFG Date)

Microsoft Extends Xbox 360 Warranty
By JESSICA MINTZ, AP Business Writer
7/5/2007
SEATTLE - Microsoft Corp. on Thursday extended the warranty on its Xbox 360 to three years after too many of the video game consoles have succumbed to "general hardware failure."
The company said it will record a $1.05 billion to $1.15 billion charge for the fourth quarter that ended Saturday to pay for "anticipated costs."
Microsoft's entertainment and devices division, which makes the Xbox 360 and the Zune digital music player, reported an operating loss of $315 million on $929 million in sales in the third quarter this year.
"We don't think we've been getting the job done," said Robbie Bach, president of the division. "In the past few months, we have been having to make Xbox 360 console repairs at a rate too high for our liking."
Bach said the company made some manufacturing and production changes that he expects will reduce Xbox 360 hardware meltdowns, which are indicated by three flashing red lights on the front of the console.
The executive declined to identify the problems Microsoft fixed, or say what problems remain that could prompt general hardware failure. Bach also would not say how many gamers have sent in machines for repair _ just that the percentage is "bigger than we are comfortable with."
Microsoft will pay for shipping and repairs for three years, worldwide, for consoles afflicted with what gamers casually call "the red ring of death." Previously, the warranty expired after 1 year for U.S. customers and 2 years for Europeans.
Microsoft also will reimburse the "small number" of Xbox 360 owners who have paid for shipping and repairs on out-of-warranty consoles, Bach said.
In June, bloggers speculated that the Xbox 360 return problem was getting so severe that the company was running out of "coffins," special return-shipping boxes Microsoft provides to gamers with dead consoles.
"We'll make sure we have plenty of boxes to go back and forth," Bach said in an interview.

From the New York Times:
The size of the anticipated repair bill suggests that a third to as many as half of the machines are flawed.

Do you have the Xbox software update? - connect to Xbox Live and play any HD DVD
superclown 07-07-07, 03:26 PM I have a sammy 40 inch lns4095d with vga hook up. I keep gatting a problem where in the middle of a game the screen will tint blue for like 10 seconds then the tint will go back correct. It happens no matter wich setting i use on the vga on the xbox. It was not happening until the spring update. Anyone else having this problem? It is annoying.
