Add my 360 to the list of consoles that suddenly lost the video and am unable to get it back. The screen displayed a lot of green shadows around the dashboard and then the video died. I didn't (and still don't) have any red lights... and there is no video. I've pulled the connections apart, hooked everything up to another TV, and nothing. Pulled all the connections apart again, put it back on the original set, and nothing. Tried other sources on the same TV inputs and they worked. It looks like I'll be needing a 360 shipping coffin. BTW, my console is about 11 months old, AND I have the extended warranty... thank God...

My 360 is about a year and a half old. After not using it for about 3 weeks I went to turn it on and the DVD drive tray would not open. It tries for a few seconds and then gives up with the 4 lights on the unit flashing for a few seconds. This has happened a few times now. I can get it to open by gently pressing up or down on the tray itself while I press the eject button.

Has anyone encountered this? I'd really like to avoid sending it back to MS even if it is covered for free. Any tips on how I can fix this myself? Thanks!

Hi, I just bought my XBox 360 Elite yesterday from Amazon and it arrived today. I tried to play Gears of War on it and when the disc loads, it makes a really loud grinding sound. Then it fails to with the unreadable error. I tried this 3 times and then the 4th time it works. I checked the disc to make sure there are no scratches and then restarted the XBox 360 again. Same problem with it unable to read the disc again. Does anyone know if the loud grinding of the DVD is a problem? Or is it my game? Not a very good first impression on the XBox 360 Elite for me so far.

every 360 out there is a ticking time bomb..I love my 360 but this is the poorest design of any console i have ever seen.

This is really going to prevent more people from jumping in, and I can't blame them.

I did get the 3 red rings a few nights ago.

When is Microsuck supposed to phase in the "fixed" 360s or the new re-spins with better cooling?

the refurb I got back a week ago runs way cooler and quieter than #2. It doesn't get warm on top, even after hours of playing. My old one tended to get fairly warm over the top of the console. It has the BenQ dvd drive too, which is a bit quieter at least. Probably a weedwhacker to my last one's lawnmower.

Hey Everyone. I’m really hoping someone can help me with a problem I am having. I have a 360 Elite and a windows vista media Center PC upstairs. My goal is to have my 360 serve as a media center extender. I had everything working fine but I wanted to try a wireless setup so I changed my configuration. It worked great for a while, except the signal would drop and the video would stop playing (go black) about 55 seconds. into watching a recorded show. It was strange because every time I reconnected, the video would stop playing at that same spot. I could still navigate the menus, but it would stop letting me play video. Even though my connection was nearly 150mbps and the signal strength was nearly 80%, I was having these problems. So I decided to go to back to a completely wired network to have more stability. I am running a dlink 655 router which is one of only 2 routers that currently “work” with vista.

In windows, I can see my 360 on the network, but I can’t ping its IP address. Both my 360 and my computer can get to the internet and xbox live respectively. I can stream audio and video from my pc to my 360 just fine using windows media player 11.

However, my vista machine simply refuses to set up my 360 as a media extender in windows media center…. It worked fine before. It doesn’t now. I spent 2 hours actually talking with a 2nd tier support specialist with 360 support last night (after 2-1/2 hours of holding and being transferred and “accidentally” disconnected) and the specialist said they would have to do research and get back to me. Does anyone have any idea what is going on? Or if you dont, do you know where I can turn for help? Thanks!!!!!

PS - . I have turned off windows firewall and the windows liveonecare firewall.

have you checked the setting in your "Network and Sharing Center" in vista [can be found in the Control Panel]. i remember reading about those sharing setting screwing some stuff up.

sorry, i can find what forum was talking about it. i don't use media center in vista, sorry i couldn't help more.

Thanks - i'll check that when I get home and see if anything looks out of place. If not, I think i'm just going to reinstall vista and restore my 360 and see if starting from scratch solves anything. If anyone else has other suggestions, they would be greatly appreciated.

It is failure of the drive.
My refurb fresh back from a 3RL replacement had the drive go out. Same symptoms etc. In your case I's take it back and get a new one before I'd send it off to MS for a 4-6 week turna around on repairs.

well guess what, my 360 can't find my Vista box anymore. i made a new playlist and it wasn't showing up on the 360, so to flush the cached stuff, i disconnected my computer from my 360 in the "Computers" settings. went back to find the computer and it couldn't find it.

the only thing i did different since i first connected the 360 and Vista was i installed ZoneAlarm. but even then, i have the 360 in it's zones.

don't know what to do.

Anyone elses XBOX 360 stuck on high speed fan output since updating recently? My 1+ year old unit is pumping out 130 degree air while playing PGR3. Is that within acceptable limits? Still awaiting the three red rings any day now. It's like playing a ticking time bomb.

I recently got my replacement 360 (RROD).

The new unit seems to have some quirks.

When I power on the console it automatically logs me into my gamer tag account (I have auto login enabled), however it does not connect me to Live automatically.

I can manually connect to Live and that works.

Further, when I play PDZ, I get logged out of Live after about 10minutes time. This happens during solo play as well as co-op (which makes co-op impossible to play).

On an unrelated note, I have noticed that when playing PGR3 the driver makes a nasty grinding sound. I have double checked that the disc is seated properly in the drive.

It seems that PGR3 is the only game that makes this sound (that I know of at least).

I have searched this thread for 'auto login' and I see that a few people have exactly the same problem. Is there a way to inform MS of the problem? Has anyone found a fix?

Thanks!

EDIT: I should state that I am using the official MS wireless adapter for networking and I consistently get 3 green bars (out of 4).

Do the other people who have had this problem use the wireless adapter?

srohde;

did you reset up your router and or firewall with the new 360? i forgot to once i was wondering why it wasn't working when i figured out it had a new mac address and the router gave it a new ip address.

only thing i can think of.

I don't suspect thats the problem as I'm able to connect to Live just fine. It just doesn't auto connect for me.

Not a huge deal, but it bothers me that it isn't working the way it should.

I figured I would add my problem to the list - I got the "unreadable disc" error. It happened on every game I owned (plus XBox games), and even DVD movies. I heard a loud noise while playing Oblivion, then when I shut the machine down and started it back up, it could no longer read DVDs.

I called support - FYI - try taking out your hard drive before you call, since they will ask you to do that.

I had the machine 8 months, and it's under warranty, but it is frustrating.

Waiting on my to be returned from Mcallen for the same reason. What is frustrating is that it was the refurb replacement they sent me for my 3RL issue. Even worse is I had it back only 3 weeks before it crapped out.

I'm on my original unit that has been repaired once and now I'm getting a hard buzzing noise on start up from the disc drive, dirty disc error and it's starting to freeze the screen again.

I'm going to lose it for Halo 3. I can feel it.

Can someone please help me with a corrupted profile and a possible hard drive problem?

I noticed that the videos I had downloaded from marketplace (movie trailers, game videos, etc) suddenly started playing with intermittent macroblocking or not at all. I tried deleting all of them and re-downloading the same files, but the result was the same. I then noticed that none of my demos would play and, finally, that my gamer profile was corrupted.

Would the fact that my gamer profile was corrupted cause the videos and demos not to play properly or do I have a bigger problem here like the whole hard drive being corrupted?

If I delete my profile and then recover my gamertag, would that solve the problem or do I need to reformat the hard drive?

Thanks in advance.

Do you happen to be using a wireless bridge (ie. a wireless adapter connected to your 360s Ethernet port)?

I used to use one from Linksys and my audio was constantly dropping out. I bit the bullet and bought the official MS wireless dongle thing and my connection improved dramatically. Music and video stream very well now with no drop outs.

Quick elementary question:

I have heard of an HD DVD audio menu a few times on the 360 but cannot find one. Is there one under system or where can I find it? I would like to see if My Onkyo 805 can handle WMA Pro. If not, does anyone know what the optimum settings would be on the 360 and on the HD DVD itself? (I think I posted this in the wrong thread earlier...)

no wireless, connected with a cable.

anyways, seems to be fine now, no skipping. maybe it was still cache all the music or something...

although, when i use to stream music, if i was using winamp at the same time as the 360 was playing music, it would start to skip. going to test that out later.

The HD DVD audio menu is not part of the dashboard. To access it, you play an HD-DVD and go to the on screen menu (I think you just hit any button on your controller). It brings up the bottom overlay menu and you select the audio button and you can choose the audio that will be output for movies.

I might have some minor details wrong here, but you should be able to figure it out.

srohde
08-01-07, 12:18 PM
Oh, and from what I heard the order of the output codecs from best to worst: WMAPro, DTS, DD, Dolby.

Of course, the difference you hear would be subject to your audio system.

Thanks! I thought that was what they were referring to. I guess what I'm puzzled about is I don't recall seeing WMA Pro or DTS as on option- even on (for instance) the Ultimate Matrix movies. On the dashboard I have seen WMA Pro with Dolby Digital which I selected and it seems to work fine. I just bought 300 so I'll try it again tonight. Is there a possibility I did not get some kind of update? The 360 is online almost daily and I have watched quite a few HD DVD's recently.

If your 360 is connected to the net you will automatically receive updates when you insert an HD-DVD. I've never heard of anyone not getting an update, so I would rule that out as a possibility.

The WMA Pro option will always be an available option (as well as DTS, DD,..). These are what the 360 outputs to your receiver regardless of how the movie was encoded.

One thing, you might be confusing the 360 HD-DVD audio menu with the audio selections for the movie itself.

I tried to link a picture of the menu, but couldn't find one.

good luck.

Thanks again! I found it. I didn't know I had to hit the display button on the remote to pull up an audio menu? Weird... Anyways, I watched 300 with the DTS track last night and it rocked. Sadly, my Onkyo 805 doesn't seem to handle WMA.

:( I have a xbox 360 connected wireless to a linksys WRT54G wireless router with the latest firmware and a PC running windows XP SP2 connected wired to the router. My Problem is that I can not get my 360 to connect to my PC to do media sharing. For some reason the 360 can't see the PC and vice versa. Has any one had this problem and know how to set up the router, PC and 360 so that they can work together to share files. Any help on this subject would be great after spending 3 hours in the middle of the night trying to make it work. Thanks

Got a xbox 360 elite(june build) and for some odd reason sometimes when I pop a dvd in the drive I get the sound..but no picture. Funny part is the games play fine...just the DVD's do this. Its connected with the HDMI cable to my 37" LG 37lc2d(1080i). Think its a setting or a hardware issue?

Here is one...I just got a Vizio 37 inch today and I went to play APF and it froze all three times I tried to play. I tried the first time on 1080i and second and third times on 720 p. My system has never locked up with APF before and wondering if I missed something when I set up the 360 to work with the HDTV. I hooked everything up in the back correctly and then went into the settings and changed everything and even the switch in the back.

Just wondering if any had this experience before.

Just got a refurb 360 last month after losing one to the three red rings about 4 months ago and the PITA is that everytime I place a new disk in - it insists on seeing the game disk as a DVD and pops up a DVD menu rather than starting the game and I spend 5 minutes restarting and reloading games until it recognizes it and sometimes it's friggin annoying.

I have no add-on or need to even use it as a DVD as I own an HD DVD and BD 1200 so it's useless for me to even try to use the dang thing like that and never have. Never had this occur with my previous 360 but I have no idea to change the default or why it insists on seeing every game as a DVD instead of a Game Disk. Anyone experience this? Thanks :)

Forget about helping guys the second 360 Died - another three red ringer after 58 days ownership what a POS!
The first one survived 9 months and now the second one I bought couldn't make it 60 days. Well, now I get to try out the new warranty on number three. $800 and all I have to show for it is a drawer full of games.

Who the hell designed this thing? My first Xbox survived me 5 years and I gave it away to a friend and it's still running for them a year later without a hiccup.

My 8 month old 360 died (rrod). It is now at microsoft being repaired. I got tired of waiting, so I broke down and bought ANOTHER one. Because I have NO doubt that the new one will crap out as well, I spent the money to get a membership at Sams club so I could just return it there and immediately get a new one instead of this waiting a month BS. I even had to buy a bundle with added junk I don't want. Did I get the new one with HDMI? Nope. This is a premium that was built November 2006! I just got home with it, plugged it in, and right off the bat the ring of light on the console does not work for quadrants 2 and 4. It is saying files are damaged and I should reload them, but does not say which ones nor where to get them. I'm fighting that BS right now.

So, why do I put up with this crap? Halo. I HATE to admit it, but I'll keep putting up with this as long as Halo is only available on the Xbox. Since Microsoft bought Bungie, I guess I'll be suffering like this for a loooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggggg time. Absolutely insane.

The vga resolution on that set must be WUXGA (16:10 ratio). That means it supports up to 1920x1200. You would get letterboxing in that instance. Otherwise, the picture would be distorted. Check your manual and see what is supported on that input.

I had a similar problem the first time my console went down. It quit reading any discs. It kept telling me the disc was unreadable, clean the disc. I called MS and sent it in for repairs. Got it back a month later and one month after that I got the 3RR.

do you think there is a problem with my hard drive. on my 1st 360, it started making this noise like spinning a skateboard wheel with rusty bearings, like everything inside was getting crushed and the disc was cracking in half but it actually wasnt. everytime i took out a disc it was fine. and this happened probably within the first month of having the system and it worked great until the system got the ring of death after a year.

so then a month ago i got a new 360 and in 1 week that same noise started happening on my new system but this time my disc drive was almost completely broke. it wouldnt read games but it would read a dvd if i opened and shut the disc tray about 10-20 times. so i returned it to costco and just ordered an elite which should be here in 2 days.

now i was using the hard drive from my 1st system on the 2nd one because of all my game saves. so do you think the hard drive had something to do with making that weird noise?

Yes, I've been having this same problem since I bought an Elite & recovered my Gamertag. When I turn on the Elite, it signs me in but doesn't connect to live.

Then, when I select connect to live, it makes me test my connection every time (and does so successfully). Not really a showstopper, but a PITA and not sure why it happens...

I just got an Elite and had the same problem.
Just sign into Live, then click on your profile like you are going to manage your settings. The last selection on that screen is Auto Sign-in. Choose it then enable. That should do it.

My 360 with I've had since Jan 06 seems to have died... kind of. It had trouble reading discs on Fri night, got it working, trouble again Sat night, got it working, and trouble again today, didnt get working. It will boot to dashboard and look as if there is no game in the tray as it says open tray. Click it, tray opens, click it to close it and it says reading, then back to open tray... Coffin is on its way, I just hope it gets back before Halo 3 comes. If not my friend is about to deploy for a couple of months and he said i can just use his box while he's gone.

I'm in the same boat after having my xbox give me Disc Read errors this weekend, it was time for a call to Microsoft. I tried the online option but kept getting an error saying to call Microsoft. So i called spoke to some lady in broken english and she would repeat the same phrases over and over.

So after going thru the process of disconnecting my harddrive, then trying to play games, she was trying to tell me that its the games fault and not the 360! I gently reminded her i got Madden new on Thursday, and that it hasnt been anywhere except in my 360 since then, also that the issue has occured while playing NCAA 08 and 07 plus Forza, so its more than just one disc. I had to fight the lady telling her i wanted a replacement, apparently they thought i was out of warranty is why they were trying to deflect my ph*******. Once i gave them my extended warranty info, they gave me the shipping info and to expect my 360 to come back in 3-6 weeks.

I've already had the RROD back last november, so i'm relagated to the fact that i'll miss NHL 08. I just wish when you call, that they would have competent call centers who do more than say the same "So Sorry for Your Inconvienence" in such a monotone and uncaring way. I work in the banking industry, the calls i have experience with the outsourced call centers from Microsoft have been on the worst scale that i've ever heard.

I don't play Xbox all that much, however, I do like downloading the HD movie trailers. I went to download a trailer (Shrek 3) and when playing it back, there was no sound. At the same time, the audio for the sound effects were working when I was scrolling around and clicking on features on the Xbox.

I thought it might be the trailer, so I deleated it, and downloaded it again. Still no sound. I then tried another movie trailer that I downloaded months ago and the audio was fine. So then I tried another trailer I also downloaded months and there was no audio.

Out of the 3 old movie trailers, two of them had sound and one did not. The one that did not, I remember USED to have sound months ago.

Now this situation with the Shrek 3 trailer.

I think the only thing that may have changed since the last time I turned on my Xbox (and it's been months) was the new update. Maybe that had something to do with it???

I'm still using the older 360 from last Christmas. If there are any issues with movie trailer audio I'm not aware of it since I have not read through this thread.

Thanks,

Hi..I have a sony trinitron, not HD. It was recently repaired(caps and resistors), but now my Xbox 360 is acting weird. Games with words are not readable, it's almost like the tracking is off. I tried the xbox on another TV and it works fine. Anyone know what could be the cause. It did work properly for about 5 minutes, then xbox re-started and when it came back on, back to the fuzzies.

Need some advice here. I cannot get my Xbox 360 optical out to work at all. I can only get sound thru analog stereo. I've got a premium via component (set to 720p) out to my Onkyo 875 out to my 60XBR2 display at 1080p. I've tried different optical cables, different component cables, different input on my receiver, and different receivers to no avail. My 360 is outputting something as the optical cables light up red when connected. I've triple checked all my connections and input assignments but nada. I tried all 3 digital settings in the dashboard and still nothing. I'm still leaning toward user error on my part but I can't figure it out. I thought if my 360 was to blame that the optical port would not light up but I've been wrong before. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Have you set your Onkyo to the correct settings for optical?

Yeah, I've tried both assignable optical inputs on the back and the fixed one on the front panel. I've made sure I've assigned it to the correct video input.

Is the onkyo programable? Meaning is it set to bitstream

They rolled new heat sinks into production a month or two ago that may resolve the overheating problems.

My repaired unit had the new heatsinks, it still failed within a month.

Well, i received my Coffin last friday, sent the 360 out this morning to texas. I'm hoping for a 12 day total turnaround, but expect nothing short of 3 weeks. I sent it in for issues with the unable to read disc issues along with my blades getting stuck at times. I just hope i do not get the same one back if they are unable to produce the errors. I had a heck of a time explaining that errors occured after playing 360 for over 2 hours usually.

I booted up my 360 last night, put in a game and it started making a horrible noise, I ejected the disc and closed the trey, it opened back up, I closed the trey..it opened back up it would not stay closed..I turned the 360 off and the damm trey opened while it was off I was like what the hell? I turned it back on and the same thing..I finally got the trey to stay closed so I put in a couple of cheap games in case they got damaged and it said unreadable disc...so I'm guessing my DD is wasted? The system is not even a year old and I prolly only play....mabye 6-10 hours a week.

Good thing I have the 1 year warr through EB games..I'm going to get a new one this morning...I never did get the RROD....anyone else have this happen?
I can also extend my warr through EB games for another year for $40, its worth it to me to be able to drive 15 mins and get a new one instead of sending it off and getting back a POS like most peeps do

Does anybody know if there going to be a xbox 360 redesign or something ? I bought one last week and only last 6 days before it broke. It didn't read any disc I put in the tray. I'm thinking of buying another one. To many good games and no reliable hardware to play them.

I just hope that microsoft release a much improved and more reliable xbox , one that can endure long hours of playing Halo 3!!! ;-)

Get the new one with HDMI. It is the latest build with new heat sinks, Benq dvd, and same mobo as the Elites. While it may not be the perfect solution, it's the best thing out at the moment. Since you've only had yours 6 days I'm sure you can return it. The HDMI 360's say it on the box and the build dates will be July 07 going forward. Best Buy, Target, Dell, and Amazon seem to be stocking them now.

Hello guys, just looking for some knowledgable opinions. Here's my story. 5 days ago 3 RROD. Being a somewhat technical guy, and having a buddy that went through 4 replacement units from microsoft over 8 months I decided to screw my 3 year extended warranty. So after researching the net for hours I found that I wanted to tackle the X clamp replacement fix. Long story short my xbox 360 works now after 2 days. BUt.......Tonight the thing just shut down after 2 hours of playing NHL 08. Now I am getting the 2 flashing red lights. My power brick goes back to orange. The brick gets pretty warm. Im just wondering IF the powerbrick has just decided to poop out OR did I screw up something inside?? The 360 itself is VERY cool to the touch after 2 hours. It was never this cool before I fixed it! Maybe should I try another powerbrick first before I scrap this one and run out to buy an elite?? All feedback WELCOME ,thank you all !!!

That usually means that the console is overheating. You may have to take it back apart and reapply the thermal compound. Use Artic Silver if you can find it. Also, make sure your heatsinks are properly attached.

You can also check out the secondary error code and see what it is telling you.

Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
Release the eject button and press it again.
The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
All four lights flashing - 0
One light flashing - 1
Two Lights flashing - 2
Three lights flashing - 3

0001 is for a power supply problem. Also 0003 could also be the power supply. 0011,0012,or 0013 are overheating problems. If it is a different number, then it may be something else. Check and report back.

Do you think the position of the xbox 360 makes a difference in how it manages its internal heat?

If it was positioned vertically, the heat should rise to the top;
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/9/97/Thesimpsonsxbox.jpg

If it was positioned horizontally, the heat would be more even through out the console.

(reposting since I got a locked thread for not reading the sticky!)

I just got my Xbox 360 about 6 weeks ago. Last Wednesday, the Xbox can't read any of my game discs! Next thing I know it sees every disc as a DVD.

So I call Xbox support, they say they are going to send me a box to ship back my Xbox to get fixed. They tell me it is going to take 3-4 weeks. I was pretty ticked, but oh well, what can you do?

Well, it is Monday, and I still don't have a box to ship back my Xbox. I call up support, and they tell me it takes 7-10 business days. I asked him why it takes so long, he told me that I could call up UPS and ask them as they are the ones responsible for shipping the box. I asked if he has a tracking number that I can use when I call up UPS to find out what is going on. He says no, he doesn't have one.

Ok... I have had to deal with Dell, Apple and HP support. All three had a pre-paid box in my hand the next day. Apple was the best with their iPod support where the 3 times I had a faulty iPod, they had a refurb back in my hand in 3 days (1st day - shipping, next - repair, 3rd day - in my hand). Heck, the last time I sent my iPod in, I told them that the previous refurb had an issue, and I wanted a new iPod, and they sent me a new iPod!

How hard can it be to stick a box in the mail and have it to someone the next day? You would think Microsoft would really want to keep their customer base happy.

Sheesh!!!

Are all Xbox repairs this crappy?

Wow, what a depressing thread. Unfortunately I need to join the crowd now as my 360 crapped out after waiting 3 hours in line for Halo 3 Monday night.

I got home, put the disc in and about 5 minutes into the cinematics, I heard this loud grinding noise coming from the DVD tray. I quickly ejected the disc and now the drive won't read 360 games, XBOX games or even DVDs. It says something about how it can't read the disc and if it's a HDDVD to put it in the HDDVD tray.

Also, when I go to either open or close the tray, I hear 3 clicks from the drive.

I guess I'll be calling MS later today:( I just pissed by the horrible timing. I want to play Halo 3 so badly but I don't have a system to do so with. I'm temped to go out and buy one and then return it when I get my back, but that would be unethical.;)

Question about a possible 360/hdtv problem. Im leaning more towards a 360 problem. Both are new. Anyways. Turned on my 360 and noticed right away. The colors all messed up. It was flickering with different color and literally almost went into black and white. I also had a weird line going across the middle of the screen and the bottom of the screen. Turned it off and swaped cables. Currently using Monster cables. Im using component cables btw with a Samsung LN-T3253H. Plugged in the stock M$ cables. And it was fine. Me being curious plugged in my Monster cables back in. Everything was fine. So what do you guys think? 360, tv, cable or gpu issue with the 360? After this issue. I played the 360 2 hours straight thinking 3 red rings might be coming. But it played fine with no issues.

Apparantly, Halo 3 is causing a whole crapload of issues...

clicky (http://kotaku.com/gaming/defective/halo-3-disc-read-errors-rampant-304600.php)

A storm is brewing in both the Xbox and Bungie forums, where over a hundred posters have now verified that their copies of Halo 3 are causing disc read errors. lockups, and even the dreaded RRoD on their Xbox 360 consoles. From what I can glean from skimming through the 22 pages of replies to the original poster's problem, most of the people affected purchased the standard edition, though a few are reporting having the problem on both the standard and the LE version of the game. Some believe the discs are corrupting the data on the hard disc itself, as some have had their game discs replaced twice or more now with similar results, and removing the hard disc seems to keep the error from occurring with some posters. Some can load the game fine and play it for short bursts before the problem occurs, while others are finding the issue limited to certain game modes. Check out the forum threads for more info on the problems had, and hopefully some official response will be given about the issue soon.

I'm having some trouble with my surround sound setup and my 360 (Premium version). I am running digital audio from the 360 to my HS100 Harman Kardon receiver via an optical cord but after about 10 minutes of gaming/music/videos/etc the audio starts to get distorted and crackly. It'll get worse over the course of a minute then cut out entirely, after which it will return and sound crystal clear for another 10ish minutes. I have the 360 set to 5.1 surround and the receiver set to "Original". I find I can interupt the process and get normal sound again by switching inputs on the receiver to another and then back to digital or by changing the output on the receiver to stereo instead of one of it's surround sound modes. The only other related incidents I can think of would be a case of a single thin black horizontal line banding down my display when at the dashboard sometimes or a half second audio delay when using the same optical cable and receiver for my HD Satillite. Could that incidate a problem with the 360's display cord or the optical cable? Any help would be appreciated.

When watching DVD movies it defaults the picture with sidebars, and the console is set to 1080p Widescreen, so every single time im watching a regular movie that its not WS i have to manually strecth it to get a full screen.

Does anybody know a way around this or a fix for it besides changing the picture size to stretch on the box.

Yes, buy your dvd movies in widescreen format :)

And if you can't, watch them with the bars on the sides. If the disc you are watching's original aspect ratio is 4:3 and not 16:9, then why stretch it? Its going to look like crap, it was DESIGNED to be viewed at 4:3.

Then I suppose there are people who like the people ont he screen to be 2 feet shorter than they really are and lay on 50 pounds of weight ;) Or people that liek to zoom it to fill, and who care about what they are missing on the edges of the screen that they can't see anymore...

HappyFunBoater, I wish I had a good experience like you. My Xbox 360 Premium was killed by Halo 3?!? Three red lights! Ugh!

I originally bought my 360 on Oct 10th, 2006. It worked great until May 07, then I went through the process of return for red ring of death (rrod). From the time I called to the time I got a refurb 360 was about 2 1/2 weeks. The refurb worked for 4 hours of gaming and then began a cycle of freezing on startup. The xbox globe would spin 1/2 turn, freeze and then a moment later the 360 would reboot on its own. There was no way to break this cycle. I went through another 2 1/2 wk return process to get the next refurb unit (read 3rd xbox 360).

The 3rd refurb worked well for 3 months and included many hours of Gears of War. It locked up during Medal of Honor Airborne a couple times... then I bought Halo 3 on launch day.

Playing Halo 3, the Xbox 360 began locking up routinely the first couple minutes of play for the day. It would load the game and I would begin playing and within 2 minutes, the screen would freeze and the wireless controller would not work to shutdown or restart. I would have to use the 360 remote or manually push the power button on the 360 to restart and then same thing would happen a couple minutes later. However, I played then played for a couple hours with no troubles at all. Then after a couple days, I got the rrod (error code 0102) and I disconnected everything and played without any problem after reconnecting the power supply but without the hard drive, HD DVD drive and wireless network. I reattached everything and it began locking up again after a couple minutes of gaming, just like it was doing prior to rrod. Then, it died and the rrod would not go away.

I was told the last time I returned my Xbox 360 that the third return was expedited. I would get overnight shipping of the return box and a manager or specialist would track and push my sucky 360 through the process. However, when I called, I was told I would get "expedited service" and I should expect a 3-4 week turnaround time.

So... coming up on one year of ownership of an Xbox 360 with two months waiting on M$ to fix the crappy machine = 10 months of game play and lots of headaches.

I am buying a PS3 when the price drops at the end of this month.

I'd definitely acknowledge that there's a problem with some boxes. I was at a friend's house yesterday and he was playing Bioshock. For some reason he had a small jet engine running in his entertainment center. Of course it was the 360 - and the disk wasn't (or shouldn't) have been spinning because he paused the game. Wow. I swear I can't even hear my 360, and it's sitting on an open entertainment center (no doors, back or sides - just a TV console stand). I got my Xbox a few months before my friend, so this isn't something they fixed. It's just a batch issue.

If you have the replacement plan, you don't need to worry. If you have a problem you just swap it out for a new unit.

I just upgraded to an elite a couple weeks ago myself. I never really had any problems with my old premium that I got back in April 06. I was getting a dirty disk error once in a while but never any red lights. I do know people online that are on their 7th unit though so I wonder if its just hit and miss or if there's something other people are doing that might be more harmful to the unit than what I'm doing. Give your 360 plenty of room to breath and keep the power brick as far away from the console as possible. That's what I was told anyway. My new one is alot quieter than my old one too.

I agree with exx, my power supply box is on the floor and my 360 sits on a wooden shelf 2 ft above and the shelf is open in front and rear. The only other thing on the shelf is the now unused HD DVD drive... gonna have to hook that up to my PC.

I think my launch 360 is on its last legs. I've been getting a lot of random lockups lately. It's strange, but all these issues seem to have started after I downloaded the Bioshock patch.

I'm thinking of picking up one of the new HDMI consoles. If I do so, can I swap the hard drive with my existing one? I really don't want to lose my save games. I guess my other option is to buy a memory card and transfer the data that way.

If I buy an Elite, does it come with the transfer cable? I guess that could be another option.

Man.... MS customer support sucks.

I can't believe it has been 4 weeks and still no update on my 360. I would expect them to update people with SOMETHING!!!

ARGH!!!! I am so tempted to sell my 360 when I get it and use it towards a new video card and just stick with PC gaming!

No Halo 3 and no Orange Box is driving me CRAZY!!!

Now I'm really scared :( I just bought a Xbox 360 Elite last night and am ready to just take it back after reading this thread. I have been a PC gamer for the last 12 years and decided to try a 360 since it seems most of my friends are not gaming in the PC anymore now that they use consoles. All I read on the net is how unreliable these things are. I did buy the 2 year Best Buy replacement plan- but I'm still uneasy about spending $500.00 on something so questionable. Argggggggg........I don't know what to do. Relax...you will be fine. You have the 2 year PRP you have nothing to worry about. You have unlimited returns for the first year of your PRP and then you have one return for the second year.

You can just take the old hard drive off your old 360 and put it on the new one and all will work just fine.
The elite doesn't come with the transfer cable but it is free from MS.

My Xbox 360 which was manufactured on 11/3/2005 finally got the RROD! I guess it will eventually happen to all Xbox 360s. I am just not very happy that it happened a couple of weeks after the Halo 3 release and only a few weeks before COD 4 come out!

I feel your pain! Pretty much every 360 is a ticking time-bomb. My launch console recently died too. I really suspect it was the Bioshock patch, because it performed flawlessly up to that point.

I decided I couldn't wait for MS to repair my console and went out and bought one from Best Buy. The strange thing was that the box did not indicate it was an HDMI model, but when I got home and opened it, I found it was. That was a pleasant surprise.

I also purchased the 2-year replacement plan, so I can swap out the console right away after the next HW failure. I'm planning to sell the bundled games to recoup that cost. I'll probably get MS to repair my old console and just sell it when I get it back.

I fired up Bioshock last night without the update and it appeared to be working fine. Hope it stays that way!

Trying to decide when to purchase PS3. Now or after rumored price drop in Nov. I do not want the cheaper 40GB version.

Trying to decide when to purchase PS3. Now or after rumored price drop in Nov. I do not want the cheaper 40GB version. If you want to play PS2 games on a PS3 then get one now while the 60gb one is around. After it is gone then the 80gb handles it through emulation and the 40gb doesn't support BC at all. If you don't care about BC then I would say get the 40gb cuz you can always just upgrade your hard drive cheaper then the difference of buying the 80gb.

By expedited service they mean they won't lose it. lol

Even with all the problems I think you are better off with the 360. Well that is if you actually enjoy gaming.

Please tell me you found a fix??????????? I've been using the RCA cables for a few weeks because mine is doing the samething.. The light is red on the other end of the optical and I never touched it or the settings in the reciever.. And one day it just stopped working.. I just bought Transformers and would really like to listen to it in 5.1

Anyone have any ideas? It's happened to others but nobody ever comes back to say how they fixed it..

Got my Xbox in Dec 2006, wasn't playing a lot, mostly using as media extender. Last week saw RROD while streaming music. Tried 3 times already towel trick, but it only helps for a few hours.
But, consider everything, I still like it, probably will sell after repairs and get new one with HDMI and new 65 nm processor, supposedly running cooler.

Add me to the long list of users with a bad 360. The unit has never had the digital output working since purchase and now about half the time it will freeze and show "unable to read disk" error after about 30-45 minutes of use. Loud as heck too. I am waiting for my return box to arrive. I inquired about having the unit replaced with an HDMI one. I was even willing to pay extra for the upgrade. The CS rep told me that is totally up to the repair center but he did mention that they have had alot of requests for this. I have my 360 premium since March 2007 (component out).

It isn't only the malfunction that is bothering me it is the wait. I have had to send in 2 other Xbox's and I have never had to wait this long. The other two had a great turn around time. It has now been 10 days since they have received my Xbox. They can't tell me the status but from the way he is talking it will be the end of the week when it will ship and then we have to wait another 7 - 10 days to get it shipped back. That will mean it will be close to a month since I placed the call.

I received my shipping box last night and took my 360 to the UPS store to send it out. The guy at the counter had a smirk and said as I walked up with box in hand, "Xbox right?" I told him that it was scary that he knew that. He told me that his store alone (there are 7 Ups stores in my town) sends out 30-40 per week!! I can't imagine what the actual percentage of these machines have problems. I'll be going thru Madden withdrawl for sure now. Hopefully I won't need multiple repairs like some here.

Sorry man, never has worked since purchase. I eliminated every other possibility. I tried multiple receivers that I know work properly with optical input, tried multiple optical cables, tried multiple 360 AV multi-cables also. Now I'm sending it back after getting repeated unable to read disk errors. Good luck.

Now I know that their are different versions out there that are a lil quieter. Is it a hit or miss??? Or can I spot them by looking at some numbers/letters on the box??? I would of bought an Elite but they were all sold out! :(

I just spent a good 2-3 hours at xbox-scene.com particularly the hardware forums and I get the impression it's a fatal design flaw. I'm no technician myself but I get the sense a lot of these guys put a lot of time into this, and they're probably just as upset as we are.

The jist of the thing is that the motherboard is only secured in place on it's four corners making it extremely suseptible to warping anywhere in between when it gets hot (any guitar owners know what I'm talking about = truss rod). When the board warps connections are lost in particular the x-clamp. Even solutions to this have been re-examined days-months later, opened back the 360 to realize necessary maintenance required because things continued to need tightening after playing/heat up of innards. This would explain why systems have to be sent back constantly. There's no permanent fix with fatal design flaws!

Just go to xbox-scene.com and surf around for a while, especially the hardware forums and you'll see how messy this gets. Again, I am no technician only an impressionable reader that has had his own negative experience with this machine!

I recently purchased an HDTV (Vizio VX37L, a 37" 1366 x 768 LCD) and an Xbox 360 Elite. Right off the bat, I've noticed how aliased various things (e.g., the text in the setup menus) appear. I have my 360 set to output 720p over the HDMI cable. Am I seeing what anyone with a 360 would see? Am I seeing what anyone with a 768p native TV (and thus rescaling from 720p input) would see? Or is my scaler screwy? (Or is it something else I'm missing?) :-/

I've had my Xbox 360 for a while (almost a year) and played Halo 2 without issues. Since I've had my Halo 3 game, I often get a message that my information "can't be retrieved from the Xbox Live server." I don't have a rank or experience level, my friends can't find me on Xbox live and I can't get connected. The only solution is to turn it on and off until it finally figures it out. When the Halo 3 disk isn't in, it seems fine (immediately connects to Xbox Live). I can't find any information on this on the Xbox Live help area (no surprise). Has anyone else had this problem? Any fixes?

My 360 is at the repair center now. I never got the RROD with it or any type of freezing/lag.

All of the sudden while playing Halo 3, I started to get Disc Unplayable Error Messages mid way through gameplay. Irritating as heck, it happens in the same spot every single time. It is a standard edition and the disc appears to be physically flawless, no scratches or cracks at all. I stumbled onto a forum over at xbox.com where hundreds of users describe the same type of anomaly. It had become so bad that it was effecting other games as well. I started to get Disc Unplayable Error messages in Bioshock as well.

With no other recourse, I sent the 360 in. At least it's still under warranty. Hopefully the refurb they send me doesn't do this crap! I'm really itching to play Halo 3, Bioshock, the Orange Box and Call of Duty 4.

I feel for you, the unreadable disk error is something different from the RRoD. RRoD being the heat sink and Unreadable being the disk drive going bad. I had both happen. The unreadable came right after I got a refurb back from MS for the RRoD

The display is fine in 480p but when I set it to 1080i the image is not good quality. I mean its a bit "off". There is a kind of "blueish backround glow" around everything and the quality doesn't seem HD. I have it hooked up through Component and I am POSITIVE that the HDTV switch is set right and it is plugged in correctly. What could be wrong?

I just purchased an Xbox 360 Premium bundle this weekend. This is one of the newer models with HDMI output. However, I'm having an issue getting the Xbox to output in 5.1. My reciever is saying that it's recieving a digital signal, but only in stereo. I have verified my audio settings in the dashboard, as well as double checking my reciever and have found nothing wrong.

I should mention that one in a while it will output in 5.1, but I haven't had the system long enough to see if a pattern is apparent. I should also mention that i have tried this with a variety of games and get the same results. Any help that you folks could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I got an XBox 360 and Denon 3806. I can only get sound in stereo through the component cable. If I connect an optical cable through the component cable, I can not get any sound.

I setup the Denon 3806 to optical and have setup the Xbox as a VCR unit and everything works fine, just not surround sound. Can anyone help?

I have a simular problem. Runing my 360 (audio and video) through a denon 2807. Video works fine (no issues), the audio however defaults to a stereo output and not to dobly digital 5.1 (via the optical cable). Every time I want the sound to be in dobly digital 5.1 [very helpful when playing Call of Duty 4], I have to go into my 2807's setup menu, switch the optical from the 360 to off, and re-assign it again. At this point will the 360 maintain dobly digital 5.1sound. Sometimes when i turn the 360 off for the evening and then come back 24[ish] hours later, it will fire right up in dobly digital 5.1. But most other times I have to go through the entire process of reassigning the optical cable. My main problem is trying to figure out how to keep it that way!!!

My 360 recently stopped being able to read discs. At first, it would say "unreadable disc" or something similar, but now it won't recognize the disc at all. If I put a game in and close the drive, nothing happens and the "open tray" command still appears. Anybody else have this problem?

And the other problem (on the other 360)...6 roommates so 2 are necessary. It is an older box that I recently got back refurbished as a replacement for my RROD'd 360. After a night of about 4-5 hours of continuous play, the next morning I turned it on only to see the dreaded RROD. Turned it off, then back on and it was fine. Has happened once again since, but after rebooting performs perfectly...am I screwed?

Thanks in advance...

Is the one that isn't reading disks still under warranty? If so then just send it in.

For the one that was refurbed replacement...I would wait til the other one comes back and then send that one in that way you are not out a console. If you can that is. With it RRODing every now and then means that it is on it's way out. Try to also go a little easy on it while the other is gone so you aren't going cold turkey til the other arrives. The average turn around time is 4 weeks. Sometimes a little less and sometimes a little more.

First off thanks for your help.

I recently got the xbox 360 and have it connected to my projector.

I am using the xbox 360 component cables and they are connected through a switcher because of my surround sound system.

Anyway the system works great yet after a while the screen goes black and the projector searches for the component input again.

It finds it and resumes the game but it does it quite a bit while I am on Xbox.

Any ideas, it is greatly appreciated.

Thanks Again,

First off, I love my xbox 360 and a big supporter of Microsoft since their 3 year plan extension. I had a PS2, and it broke after 9 months, I swore never to by a playstation again.

I received the 3 rings, and sent my box in, it got delayed on they way back because they recorded the wrong address.

I am having unreadable disc errors now, which I get arround by loading up a game, then turning it off and restarting, I have no issues when I do that, except I am getting tired of doing so, so I want to send it back.

My issue is with the people at the service center. Out of the 18 times I have spoken to them, only 1 has spoken english clearly, without an accent from the country we don't have to mention. Now, they are friendly, but they cannot understand clear english, which results in my faustration. For example, the first time I sent it in, they sent it to the wrong street. I called last weekend, and their server was 'down' which they always told me to call back 2 hours later, which I kept on doing. The thing that pissed me off is that each time, they demanded to go through the trouble shooting list. Then I had to go through the name, address, etc., because supposively they couldn't pull up my serial number or have it on file. All 3 time that I patiently agreed to go through this exercise, they cannot understand that I live on 93rd street. They ask me again to say it clearly, and then to spell it. Then after going though everything, they tell me to call back because their system is down. The 2nd and 3rd time I called I asked them upfront if their system was up. The 4th time I called I asked for the supervisor and went through a stress releaving (I spoke my mind in a manner that it didn't matter what language I spoke, they could understand my point) conversation with them as they wouldn't pass me through. Finally, they said their phone transfer system was down so they couldn't transfer me.

I wish they hired people where they either pass the TOFEL and/or english is their first language. English is my first language, and I speak perfectly understandable english, my grammer sucks no doubt but when I say 93, people understand.

I have spoken to the service center so many times because they claim its server issues. The first time I sent back my xbox, because they wrote the address down wrong, they got me to follow up myself with UPS, only to be told that the sender can only talk to them. I called again UPS back after speaking with the service center again, and finally UPS relented and told me Microsoft had already received the xbox back a week before I first inquired why my xbox repair was taking so long.

I just bought--at a discount--a new original xbox 360 that does not have HDMI. It does have the 20mg hard drive, etc. I would like to connect this to my receiver to get 5.1 sound, but I am unsure of what I need to buy in order to do that. I thought I had found the "correct" cable on Amazon.com--except everyone claims it doesn't actually work. How do others with the older 360 do this?

I am going through this same thing, they screwed up the address 3 times sending the empty box and now supposedely 2 times with the repaired xbox. Now they have no idea where it is....

Hi folks,

Has anybody try burning JPEGS onto a CD-R? I thought the 360 would be able to read the disk but i received a "this disc un-readable" error. Besides buying a USB flash drive, what else can i do? Do i have to burn the JPEGS onto a DVD-R instead? Thanks for the help!

Im glad I have a ps3. Im waiting to see if i get an Update version. The supervisor's i've spoken with DONT answer to NOBODY but themselves. Wish I had their job.

Use an optical cable and connected from the 360's component cable to your A/v receiver.
An opticle cable can be had cheap from monoprice.com

Thanks for your response. I was working a 21 hour day when I asked this--no, not a normal thing for me--and I was naively assuming that I would probably need a specific cable made just for the 360.

Again, thank you!

Hey guys,

I have been trying to narrow down an issue I am currently having with my xbox over hdmi. I just recently purchased a Samsung 4671. I play a ton of xbox. But i am noticing some banding issues over hdmi. In the dashboard there are these horizontal lines going threw the screen at different widths. Overall it looks really choppy. I'm also having another issue with the tv as well. So I'm wondering if its the cheap amazon hdmi cables that they had for like 5 bucks. Do i need to buy quality cables for better results? Any help would be great:)

Help me please!!!

I just bought a Samsung LNT-4061 and am wondering exactly what cables I should be buying from monoprice for it. My big question is about hooking up my 360. I have a regular Xbox 360(not elite), so I need to know what the best connection to my TV would be(what cables)? Please be as specific as possible. I understand someone will be taking some time out to answer this question that has probably been addressed, so your help is much appreciated, and thanks in advance.

Johnny,
The 360 comes with everything you need except an optical cable if you have a A/v system. I would recommend if your TV has a VGA input to get a Xbox 360 VGA cord, This way you can set your Xbox to output to the exact resolution of your TV.

Hi,

I ::finally:: got the Xbox 360 to recognize all of my music files on my PC so I can stream them--I DLd the Zune software and built my library in there, and set it to share with the 360. The 360 will find albums/playlists, etc but a big chunk of the files have a red "no smoking" type circle next to them and when I try and play them I get an error message citing Status code: 19-04-80070032. The files are just standard mp3s as far as I can tell, and they play fine on my PC. Any ideas?

Thanks!

I'm completely baffled. I've watched a few 16:9 DVD's on the internal 360 dvd player. Today I popped in 2 different 4:3 DVD's and they were automatically stretched.

I tried to toggle with the aspect ratio button on the menu and "normal/native" was stretched.

Please tell me I'm missing an option?

I just lost another game save this morning. Is anyone else having saves erased from their hard drive?
I have lost Lego Star Wars about 4 times once at 80%, Cloning Clyde once from 70% and last night my son and I turned off Shrek the Third almost having beaten it only to turn it on this morning making us start a new game with no option to continue the old save.
This is definitely the drive doing it, not my son, I've checked a hundred times and witnessed it myself. I lost a game save one night for a game, turned the system off and when I reloaded the game it was magically back. Not sure what's happening, but this is really pissing me off.

i also just bought an LNT-4061f and am wondering the same thing. I got the non hdmi hd cables and the picture isn't looking as great as i thought. went into the dashboard to change the video inputs to 1080p and tried out standard, intermediate, and extended but none of them looked good.

Right now the hd cables do not look any better than the component cables that I had in. Should I get a VGA cable/adapter? What else can I do to enhance the quality?

I get the same message for the 2 songs I bought off of walmart.com.

I think it has to do with something about copywrite. These two songs work swell over my PC, but do not work when I copied them to my external hardrive, and stream them over the network to my xbox dashboard. It maybe the same issue, or not.

I just picked up the Elite, hooked it up, and everything worked fine - played a round at Cog Hill. A few hours later, I turned it on, the center light comes on and the tray can be opened but the "rings" don't cycle. No picture, no sound. It appears that the console won't boot up. I tried unplugging the unit with no luck.

Anyone else have this problem and more importantly a fix? A real pain to have to take it back especially since it was the only unit Target had.

Having had the 3 rings of death on my old xbox, i got it fixed and then I got another 360, one with HDMI, and tonight its not reading any disc, makes a wierd noise when you close the tray, It either doesnt even realize theres a disc in the try ( still says open tray) or will say disc unplayable). I been sick with the flu and my nephews have been over and one did say that he tried to play halo 3. They probably wrecked something, cause wednesday I played alittle cod4 fine.

So i called and they are gonna send a box. :( stupid kids, Classes are finally done for the semester, have time to play Bioshock, Mass Effect, Halo 3, COD4, etc. and I cant :(

I checked the cables at the time problems started happening, and the fan speed was lot higher then normal. Just for reference, if this was a PC having these problems, cooling of the gpu would be my first troubleshooting idea..

I wouldn't say I read these forums too much, we've never had problems with either of our 360's up until now. Our launch system if starting to get on in age and thinking about how much it gets used I'm not suprized that things are starting to break..

I have had my 360 for a couple months and have played it for about 50 hours I'd estimate. Well, I just bought Gears and after playing the game for a few hours over a couple days my system is now freezing after about 2 minutes of gameplay. Put in Forza, same result. No red ring however. I can't play any game right now without it freezing almost instantly. Guess I have to get in touch with Microsoft. Machine is kept in a well ventilated area and has had almost no use. Dissapointing to say the least.

Everything would load up flawlessly, 2min into gameplay and it would freeze. No matter the game.
I called MS and they had be troubleshoot it, they had me boot it without the HD. Which lead me to the rrod.

So I sent it in, and they sent me another.

My xbox has been having intermittent problems. The worst of which would be in the middle of a game or in some games at specific points in the game it will say the disk cannot be read. A different copy of these disks seems to work so it would seem like the xbox is just extremely sensitive about reading the disks (which are basically brand new and clean) This will sometimes happen in the middle of playing any one of my games.

Another problem that may be related to the first is that my system seems to glitch far too often. In games like NHL '08 it sometimes doesn't respond to controls and players may skate right past the puck without picking it up or might shoot the puck in the entirely wrong direction. In Oblivion often enough it freezes on loading screens and sometimes the auto save doesnt work.... that kind of stuff.

The console is also making a lot of noise while reading disks, its for the most part silent in the dashboard. Along with this on only a couple occasions i got a blinking red light when i turned the console on but turned it off and back on and it worked again. Just last night I got the lower right red light blinking and an error screen that unfortunately i don't remember the code on at the moment, id have to check the picture i took of it.

This has been getting worse and I called xbox recently to get service, i was a measley 6 days out of its 1 year warranty and the supervisor REFUSED to cover it under warranty saying he simply could not do it, even though I called a week before while it was under warranty for the same issue... if it just needs service what kind of argument might I use to get them to cover it? I know there are known issues and there must be SOMETHING I can say to get them to cover the repair.

Yea, thats a mouthful to post, my xbox is pretty messed up (at least i can still use it) I really appreciate any help you can offer.

Mike

Ok It's out of warranty for the disk drive but not if you get the RRoD. My suggestion is to wrap it in a towel till it frys and you get the RRoD. Send it back for that and they give you a refurb in place. The refurb then has another 90 day warranty in case the drive on that one goes bad to, like it did for mine.

I recently hooked up a subwoofer to my system. I have had it for a long time but resisted hooking up it because I live in a townhouse.

I found this problem. Connected to my receiver by Optical, the subwoofer does not get a signal with the 360 set to DD 5.1. If I set it to Digital Stereo the subwoofer comes on. I have no problems with the sub working with other inputs on my receiver. Has anyone else noticed this? The other 5 channels are fine. My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR600. This goes for games and music playback. I hope someone can help me. Thank you in advance.

Well my DVD drive is dead on my 30 day old 360 premium...returned to costco. The drive bay would not open or close if opened...grinding sound with no CD in tray. Has any one else had this problem with BenQ drives? Also, my BenQ was very loud...the Brushless fans were not as loud as pre-falcon 360...but to use as a home theater, Microsoft must modify the hardware to quiet the overtly loud 360s!

I'm on my 5th system so far and I actually thought this one was going to stick around for the long haul. 2 days ago while playing Undertow with some friends the game locked up when playing a co-op campaign 3 times. When trying to power back up my 360 it would freeze on the X360 boot screen, 3-4 times if I remember correctly. After that I called MSFT and setup a repair informing them of the grinding DVD drive and lock ups my 360 was having. After I made the call and tried once again without the hard drive or discs, I was greeted by the RRoD twice.
Now here's what I don't understand, after all that it worked without a hitch for the rest of that day. The next day it happened all over again and as of today the system has been working without any problems whatsoever. What I fear is once Microsoft gets their hands on this system they'll find nothing wrong with it and just send it back to me.
Thoughts?

Hi Guys,

I have Philips 42pf7320/98 42" plasma. I hooked up my Xbox 360 though HDMI alone (no other A/V cables) and couldn't set it higher than 480p. All other resolutions (720p, 1080i and 1080p) are grayed out. I understand that this TV can't go 1080p, but why am I stuck at 480p.

Things I've tried:

-I have tried using VGA and Component cables on my 360, they all can go 13x7 or 720p, even 1080i rather well.

-Tried the same HDMI cable to connect my PC through HDMI interface and it could go 720p and 1080i just fine only with slight over scaling.

-I use this same Xbox 360 and this same HDMI cable on my 22" monitor which plays 1080i on just fine too.

Any thoughts on this? Do I have a bad TV set?

Any solid fixes for the E 74 error?

I tried new cable(s), removing the HD, power cable light, etc. I have not opened it but it is no longer under warranty, ran out.

I would rather not pay $99 to fix it (can't afford it right now). Can I find a way to RROD the box so they can fix it for free? If it is the ANA or HANA chip then there is abolutely no fix for it unless I send it in the MS, right?

I also tried doing the towel trick twice but both time it did not help fix the error or give it the RROD.

Thanx in advance.

Not really a problem per se...but has anyone else turned off their Xbox 360 and the fan didnt shut off? you do realize that wtihin the past year there was a feature added for the xbox to not completely shut off until its downloads complete right? Part of that is the fan will also stay on as well.

Yep I know about that. All of the times this has happened all my downloads were complete and I had no active downloads when I turned off the console. Did the update include a feature to run the fan to cool down for a few minutes after a long play session (the times this has happened was after having the console on for 2+ hours)?

Hi!
In late November I bought a 360 and sent in the money for the extended warranty. They did not cash my check until almost a month later, but I assumed that was due to the busy Christmas season. Since the check was cashed, I have not received anything in the mail informing me that the warranty was extended. Is this normal, or should I attempt to contact someone? I had assumed that I would ultimately receive some type of acknowledgement through the mail (My 360 is not connected to the internet--I play things such as Oblivion, etc.)

Finally after the third attempt I got the bottom right red ring..argh...error 68 which I googled and it said Hard drive failure....I unhooked my hd dvd add on, hooked it back up, took the HD off and reinstalled it..re booted and it worked fine. Tried again last night and had to boot up twice and it took a long time before it found my controller and started up.....sound familiar? is my hard drive about to crap out...can you even get a 20 gb hard drive? I have no interest in the 120gb...$180 is outragous for a HD

You could Have 5.1 by going optical from the 360 to the Denon. You cant get 5.1 fro a red/white connection. Plus most TVs only out put stereo from the optical.

I'm in need of a little help today, I have a 360 Elite hooked to my 42" LG plasma. I bought a 500gb WD external hard drive today just so I could put all my music, pics and movies on it. Then I got the idea to load it up and use it with my 360 so I could watch all the movies and listen to the music on my HT.

I formatted the Drive to FAT32 and loaded it up, and itworked well for about 5 minutes then everything stopped and the drive basically disappeared from the 360. I hooked it back up the my laptop and it's fine.

It's done the same thing twice today, the 1st time was before I formatted the drive so I thought after formatting it wou;d be fine but obviously not...

Any Help???

Hello, I'm having an odd issue with my Xbox 360 and/or HDTV, hoping someone may have had a similar problem and a fix. At the moment I haven't been able to rule out the HDTV or Xbox as the problem. I'm leaning towards the HDTV but am looking for some input.

Here's my setup
Sharp LC42D64U
Xbox 360 is connected to the tv w/ the Component cables for video and audio (my receiver is dead at the moment), HDTV switch is set to on.

Here's the problem:
Typically, everything works fine with the xbox, the picture looks great, i have it set to 1080p on the Xbox 360 output settings, and it all works fine.

But... when playing a game (all types of games, COD4, GTAIV, Halo 3, etc.), randomly the TV will act as if it's lost or gotten a new input signal and the screen blanks out. About 3-5 seconds later, the TV will show that an input signal has been received again and the picture and audio come back on. From what I can tell, the Xbox is still running fine because the controller will still vibrate if something is going on, no lights on the console flicker or anything.

This doesn't occur when the action on screen is minimal like in the dashboard, or the other day i was playing the Qub'd mini-game in GTAIV for 30 minutes and it didn't happen, or in some xbla games like Hexic HD. But when a lot of things are going on on-screen this issue will pop up. Some times it occurs every few minutes, sometimes not for awhile. It's been really annoying trying to figure it out.

Here's some things I've tried that have not resolved the problem

Switched to another component input on the TV. There are 2 on the TV. HDMI is not an option since my Xbox 360 is slightly older.
Tried a new component cable for the xbox (the microsoft branded one) thinking the other might be bad.
Switched the output settings on the Xbox 360 to use 720p and 1080i, problem still exists.

Any ideas or thoughts on how to try and figure this out would be greatly appreciated. It's a bit frustrating to have this problem popup mid-action in a game!

Separate Question: Do you think it would be okay to cross post this in a forum specific to my TV?

Has anyone try to stream AVI files from the computer using windows media player and getting an error message saying that the file is not supported or some other stupid message?

when that error pops up, make sure one of the options isn't "download". you might need to re-download the Ipod support [it's free]. some .avi files need that to work. also, download the G-Spot Codec (http://www.download.com/GSpot/3000-2248_4-10381198.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10635504)program and see if the .avi is using any other codec.

I'm having a problem with my screen going blank with the audio still working and the TV still on. I have a 2 week old 42" 1080P Toshiba. It has happened on XBOX 360 with (2) different HDMI cables and with Wii via Component Cable. It will go blank after playing for an hour or two, sometimes coming back up within seconds and other times not coming back until I turn the TV off then back on. I'm going to return it for another one and see if it still happens. It may be your LCD. I haven't watched a DVD on it yet and it hasn't happened watching TV. It's like the video processor is over heating or something and shutting itself down. Who knows.

Ok.... I just connected up my new XBOX 360 "elite" to my new Philips LCD. I did this via HDMI. The XBOX works perfectly in 1080P for games but, I'm having issues with DVD playback. When watching a DVD in 1080P the motion is choppy however in every other resolution including 1080I its fine. I should also mention that the TV is one of the new 120 displays.

Since you mention HDTV specifically, I'm assuming you have a dvr or converter box hooked up via HDMI to the TV. Can you try disconnecting the box or powering it down completely? I have the 46" Version of your TV and had the same exact problem when I first hooked everything up, it seems that my cable company has issues with their DVR and whenever it starts recording or some other funny business in the background it seemed like it was trying to steal the signal away from whatever other devices were connected. That seemed to resolve my issue; I just need to make sure the cable box is turned off. BTW, my DVR is the Motorola kind Comcast hands out [even though I dont' have comcast]

The thing I found most interesting about this issue though was that the TV by default does not have an auto-signal detect feature, even my ghetto westinghouse can switch to the xbox automatically when turned on. But in the end it was doing exactly that [well kinda]

so, my dvd drive crapped out, well actually it reads EVERYTHING fine, except GTA... and the weird thing is, if i remove the piece on top (no idea what its called) the game runs fine.... the piece on top is just a circular cover that holds the magnet in.

gonna order another hitachi on ebay and swap my board in it.... trying to do some research and see if any specific version is quieter, or if there is a drive motor i can swap in that is more quiet. there are plenty of PC drives that are quiet, and as far as the xbox is concerned, a motor should be a motor.

Definately the falcon. It was good while it lasted. Used this a lot since xmas, mainly as a Media Extender to my HTPC. But used for game too.

Started out with a loud whine (I guess the fan?). Then freezing. Sometimes, the frozen screen has a checkerboard pattern, other times it dose not.

I get the 3 red lights flashing, but not always. Read the MS site, and I have to send it in. I did not call yet, but I know the answer!!

Do I keep the 120HDD with me, or send it on too?

Call em up and they'll send a box. Don't send the HDD, you might not get it back, and they don't need it to fix the system

Mine finally died (Manufactured some time in 06). It froze up a few times when trying to watch a HD-DVD, and then locked up when I was playing RB a few days later. After that it was the RRoD.

I bought an Arcade as a replacement. It's so much quieter (both DVD drive and fan noise) than my older model!

I'll get my first one repaired/replaced from M$ and then sell it I guess...

Not really a problem yet, just fear that it might be a sign of a problem. Anyways,so I bought the 360 about a month ago, and a Samsung LNT3732H a few weeks later. I have the 360 hooked to the HDTV right now using the 360 component cables.
I've recently noticed that when I shut off my xbox 360, a brief screen appears where the top 2/3 is green, and the bottom 1/3 of the screen is darker. This only happens when I'm turning it off, never when I turn it on or during a game. It only lasts about a half second, then it goes to the normal blue screen of the component channel on my HDTV. Is that normal, or does that mean my 360 is getting screwed up? For comparsion I also later rehooked up to the 360 to my old Maganavox SDTV, and whenever I turned it off I got a green screen, but it flashed much more briefly than the HDTV before turning to black. Before the past few days, I had never noticed it before on either TV. I'm not sure if it was always there and I never noticed it, or it's just appearing now.

My Walmart has a 3 month policy on returning the 360. So should I be worried about the 360, or is this something normal? other than that I haven't had any problems.

Well, my 360 (that I purchased in May of '06) now has the infamous RROD.
I've tried getting it fixed around town, but to no avail.
I had mine modded, so I'm pretty sure I can't send it to M$.
So I think my only option now is to sell this thing and buy a new one.
Is there a particular build date I should be looking for that fixes this problem?
I would really hate to go through this again.

Why are you not using hdmi? Just curious. You can get a cable from monoprice.com for under $10. I would not worry about your issue. Turn off the blue screen in your tv settings and see if it does the same thing.

Why am I not not using hdmi? the reason is because honestly I'm a total lost noob when it comes to hd stuff( only had the xbox and tv a little over a month now), and this stuff confuses me;). I don't know much about HDMI or what exactly it does..I thought HDMI was only useful for 1080 tvs, mine is 720p. (Though now that I think about I realize what an idiot I am. I was always aware my TV had HDMI jacks on the back,, why else would it be there if I couldn't use it?).
I also thought HDMI was used for connecting the xbox360 HD-DVD player, not the console itself on a 720p tv. So does HDMI improve the pic for the 360 games compared to the regular component cables that comes with the system? Man I'm confused. I gotta read more about HDMI on this forum

Anyways back to the main problem. I turned off the blue screen and it did the same thing. Good? Bad?

Your issues doesn't really seem like a real problem, just the signal changing or something with a bit of delay...if it happened mid gaming, then yea that would be something to worry about.

Will you see an improvement with HDMI cables over component? Probably not much. Usually the image become a little more crisp and clear but you really need to be looking for it. However since you have the option, I would definitely pick up an HDMI cable from monoprice on the cheap. Don't go getting those $100 monster cables from your local electronic shop though!

They will replace it with one of the same model type, so if you don't have HDMI or a Falcon, don't expect an upgraded refurb. I tried to get them to give me an HDMI xbox to replace mine when they repaired it incorrectly, and they said "sorry we only replace with the same model type." So I opted to have them fix mine

One other nice thing about HDMI is it is an "all or none" signal. If the digital signal is there, it is good quality. On component, which is analog, you can have your cables and signal degrade over time, and never really clue in to why your picture is degrading over time.

alright so it looks like the green screen thing is gone. Have I mentioned I'm a total noob/idiot when it comes to this stuff? Before I had the tv, I had vga cables hooked up to my PC to play the 360. I didn't use them on my TV because I didnt think the my tv supported VGA (I didnt see any ports with the letters VGA on the back, which disappointed me). Then I read online my TV does support it, and I looked at the back of my tv again ( the port says PC input instead of the VGA letters I was looking for).
So I hooked up the VGA cables and so far no green screen.Plus my DVDs will be upscaled now yay! thanks for your help:)

I think it depends on the tv. I have a Samsung LN-T3253H and used component/vga. I bought a new 360 with hdmi and the picture quality was a dramatic change. You could notice the difference right away. The picture was razor sharp. Colors are much more accurate. And ghosting is not even noticeable now. It is a digital display and going with a digital connection. I expected it to be better. Which it did not let me down one bit. Component/vga is analog. DVI/HDMI is digital. I'm sure you know. Just letting the other guy know.

Yea you're probably right, I've only experienced the difference between HDMI vs Component on my set, so maybe it is more dramatic on others, my set might handle component better than others. But nonetheless, HDMI is the way to go if you have the option.

On another note, my DVD 'unplayable disc' error has gone away, though I already have the repair order going through, just waiting for the box. I'll probably still go through with the repair cause I'm sure the problem will occur again. I just hope I don't get the same xbox back that I send in...otherwise it would be a waste of 3 weeks. Plus here in Canada they do a straight exchange, no repairs...so if I get the same one back then I'll know they've done nothing to it.

I'm getting my second replacement. RROD on the first, the second is now eating games. I've got an unusable Mass effect disk on a console that has never moved. Pristine media except for a single ring around the data area.

I could understand if I moved the console. I haven't. I sits in my entertainment unit. IT appears that there is something wrong with this dvd drive, and I was really getting into Mass effect!

At least I have a PS3 to tide me over.

Im curious. Maybe this has been talked about in this huge thread but Im not about to dig.........

I just called MS yesterday to get the coffin for my 2nd replacement. This time however, the guy said they would be sending me two boxes. One for the console, and another one for the power supply. My friend just got his replaced a month ago and they didnt replace his power supply. My first one they didnt either. This time though I am supposed to send the power supply in. Has this happened to others? Do they know something more now? The rep seemed fixated on my power supply even though its green light was on and seemed to be working normal.

As for the whole "Which version will I get as a replacement". The guy basically said what I suspected, it all depends on what they have at their repair facility. If there is a giant pool of refurbed units, which there probably is, you're most likely going to get the same version you sent in. It can happen, however, that you get sent a different model/HDMI...but dont count on it.

Well some models have different power ratings now, I believe the old ones were like 205w, and the new ones 175w. I would assume the new models still work with the old 205w power adapter though...however maybe they are swapping them out now as a safety precaution.

Most likely they are having you send in the power supply in the event that they have to send you out a falcon board with the 175w power supply instead of the 203w version. I sent one back in the other day and did not have to send in the power brick. It also maybe that since you are sending in your second unit that they are going to swap you out with the falcon model. You might luck out and get the new model.:D

Actually, I was asked for the power supply on my XBOX360 as well for the second return. I asked why, and the lady said it is protocol to send in the power supply on the second return so MS can make sure it is functioning properly as well. My build date was 2006, before any signs of falcons in the horizon.

Not to further bust his bubble, but when talking with the lady on the phone, she asked if I would accept a refurb first to get a faster turn time. I asked her if the refurb was a newer model w/ HDMI, and she said " No, it would be of the same model/make/year" as the one you already have. We are not allowed to upgrade customers to newer models if their old one is unrepairable."

Needless to say I opted for them to repair mine first as I know the track record/usage record for that one.

I agree its probably not gonna be an HDMI version, but I dont buy it about the "same year". My last repair (day 1 console) got replaced with one that had a date only 3 months old at the time. At some point, it will make more economic sense for MS to send customers units that wont fail, as opposed to identical refurbs. Time will tell what I get this time though....but I don't believe a word these customer service reps tell you about anything.

Hope your right. You would think that eventually they would just start replacing all w/ HDMI models as the older ones become more scarce....but I didn't seem to have much luck convincing the lady to do so for me.

I just opened up the one they sent me back last night. I can say 100% that it is not the same console I sent in, even though it has the same serial number stickers on it, it is definitely not the same one. That being said I am happy, got a Hitachi drive and the upgraded heat sinks. Best part, it is very quiet!

FYI, I got a Falcon chipset Elite 360 on eBay. The power brick is 175 Watts. The seller listed it as manufactured in Mar '08. The sticker on the box says, "Team FDOU," so hopefully it will run better.

Just got new hd tv. How to connect hdmi and run the digital audio cable to reciever? Reciever is older without hdmi connection. Samsung tv has a digital pass thru but will only do stereo. On back of 360, not enought room to plug component connection in(so you can run a digital cable to stereo) and a hdmi at same time. Am I missing something.

Yes, you are missing the official xbox 360 HDMI cable that has optical output for audio built into it. Check Ebay for one on the cheap, or buy a receiver that accepts audio over HDMI.

Okeydokey... I want to play Cod4 and Halo 3 with surround sound, obviously. I recently got a new 5.1 system, the PT-5500 from PTS ( http://www.ptstitan.com/book.htm ). I've got my 360 hooked up via component video and the red/white sound cords, and then from the TV I've got the red/white cables running from Audio Out to the Aux ports on my reciever.
Here's the back of my reciever: http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/2707/inputsdl0.png
The audio is plugged into the Input 2 slot.

Will that let it play in 5.1 Surround, or is there some other cable(s) I need to make it true surround?

What type of reciever do you have? It looks like you are just running analog to the reciever so you will not get 5.1 sound out of it unless it has Dolby Pro Logic II on it which can decode a 5.1 signal over analog inputs.

Well, on the front of the reciever/subwoofer, it says "PT-5500S 5.1CH Surround Reciever Amplifier"
And on the back the only identifying marks say "Digital Research" - that part looks like a logo of some sort, and "PT-5500S" next to that.

If this thing doesn't decode the 5.1 signal, is there some adapter I can buy to be able to plug into the 5.1 inputs on the reciever?

The only way you are going to be able to get 5.1 is to buy a seperate reciever that can connect to the speaker system. I know Yamaha makes recievers that connect to systems like that, and I am sure there are others also. It all depends on how much you are willing to spend on a reciever. The one nice thing about any modern recievers is they have optical on them and the component cables for the Xbox 360 have a optical port on them. Optical carries Dolby Digital and DTS signals which give you 5.1. So I would suggest looking for a reciever that can connect to those speakers.

So far, I've tried two optical cables (a Dynex one from Best Buy and the other some generic brand I got off of Amazon) and neither fit snuggly into the optical connector on the VGA cable and I think that's causing problems

I still get sound if I connect directly from the 360 to my receiver, but if I try to use this optical switch, I get nothing. I've verified the switch works with my other devices, but not my 360. It's as if the weak fit causes the signal to disappear while in the switch. My friend was able to get a few moments of sound by wiggling and pushing the cable in really hard, but that didn't last long, and if I look at the optical cable when it's plugged into the 360, the red light looks very faint, compared to my other devices.

Which optical cable will actually click firmly into the VGA HD adapter and work best, or better yet, do any of you guys have this optical switch, and if so, which optical cable are you using for the 360 that actually works?

First off I have had my box since they first came out in like November of 05. I never had a RROD but I will be honest I have logged some serious hours on it, and have had some red light scares but nothing permanent. My problem now is that for the past two months it has become very particular which discs it reads and when. It would also freeze up in the middle of games and the whole screen goes nuts like back on the old NES systems accompanied by a death screech which is quite unpleasant. I am usually able to turn it off and on and all is well, but over the last week it has become much worse to the point where it wouldn't let me play anything. I have another box that got knocked over and got RROD that I aquired free so I popped that one open and popped mine open, (yes i know i voided the warranty on it but that was only for the RROD and im not having that) and switched the dvd-roms on them. I also blew out the dust etc and put it back together no problem. But it still won't play my games. It still plays dvds sometimes and i can play downloaded demos and the dashboard works flawlessly. I am baffled because its not over heating because it won't read it from the get go. It's not the laser or the dvd-rom because i cleaned the laser and tried a totally different dvd-rom. So i guess it has to be the MOBO but I wouldn't expect that to allow me to watch movies and play on the dashboard. Any Ideas Anyone?

My Xbox 360has been acting up lately. I have it hooked up via the Components that came with it. and sometimes I will power it up, but I don't get any video or audio, it just stays on my tv's blue screen as if it was powered off. If I turn it off and turn it back on again it works fine.

This has not happened before, but has been doing it lately. any ideas? is it the TV or the Xbox?

Hello,

I have some visual problems.

xbox (1080p, should set up in 1080i, is it the same ?) HDMI used.
TV : Bravia kdl-40f1

The problem occurs mainly with DOA4, DOAX2, Ninja Gaiden 2. The hair or other thin pixels look fuzzy(like aliasing) when it is zoomed out.

I checked the xbox, I cannot set up anythig else than the resolution, maybe something need to be set up on m TV, or is it a real glitch from Bravia ... ?

Please tell me if I am not clear.

Thank you in advance for your help !
