View Full Version : General XBox 360 problem Thread:
Why would one xbox be "quicker" then anothers?
My buddy's have been complaining that my xbox is slow compared to others. So today we did a side by side comparison. And my xbox navigation wise and during game play was lot slower then my buddies. It was like mine was running in slow motion compared to my buddies.
I couldn't believe it until I saw it for my own eyes.
What to do??
ooPAYNEoo 08-29-08, 10:40 AM Um.. WHERE can you buy a 20G HD these days? Checked 3 GS, Toys R US...
Gee, I thought this would be cake.
eis61374 08-29-08, 04:11 PM PROBLEM: noticed lag in the audio btw my 360 Elite & Toshiba 57LX177
TEST: connected a pair of ear force x4 headphones to my 360 (via optical) while leaving my 360 connected to my TV via HDMI
RESULT: sound comes thru the TV's speakers about .5 - 1sec after I hear it thru the x4's.
There is no delay between the time I press a button & when an action occurs on-screen (called input lag I think) just this audio lag.
TV SOLUTIONS: I have tried turning all the post processing options both on & off & the lag is the same. I have also turned the TV's HDMI settings (lip-sync, deep color, xvYCC) both on & off & the lag remains.
360 SOLUTIONS: I switched the display mode to 720p & tried the other audio format settings. Lag is still there.
Just hoping anyone may have a suggestion on what else I can try.
Thanks in advance for any help.
I own a Toshiba 30HFX85 Projection CRT set that supports modes 540p/1080i in it's display menu. However I have yet to run my Xbox in full HD without having problems. The dilemma is that when running the 360 in 740p/1080i modes large parts of the screen are cut off, particularly the bottom right and left. The top of the screen seems to align fine. I've read of similar problems but have not heard any solutions. I've posted for help in the display section hoping for help in tweaking my TV service settings, but I really don't feel comfortable doing that.
Since I got my Xbox I have been forced to run everything in 480p which I think looks no better than top last gen games, and am very unimpressed. Also I am using a 3rd party Mad Catz 3-in-1 Universal Component cable if that may help. I am hoping that I won't have to resort to buying a new set :(

Not 100% on this, but I guessing your TV can't handle the 60mhz resolution the 360 is giving.

Have you tried adjusting the picture size & screen orientation? Take a look at pages 35-38 of the instruction manual. If you don't have the instructions go here:

Unfortunately these settings are disabled and cannot be modified in high definition modes.

So pressing the "pic size" button on the remote doesn't even work??? Hmm............
Yep it says "NOT AVAILABLE". I believe because it is in 1080i mode it defaults to full zoom, as it is a widescreen format.
eis61374 08-31-08, 11:51 PM Here are a few suggestions:
1) try disconnecting your 3-in-1 cable from any other game consoles you have except for your 360
2) try hooking your 360 up to a different TV using the exact same cables you are now (you may have to go to a friends house if you don't have another TV with component inputs)
3) try buying the official Microsoft Component Cables (I'm not a big fan of those 3-in-1 cables) & see if the problem still occurs
4) try calling 1-800-4-MY-XBOX & posting on the XBOX forums here:
http://forums.xbox.com/Default.aspx
Sorry if you've tried any of these already.
Thanks for your continued support eis61374. I have tried my console and current cables on a Polaroid LCD and everything ran fine in all HD modes. After more research on CRT TV's I am now almost certain that my Toshiba 30HFX85 is having overscan issues. Unfortunately I have no experience in servicing this issue so I'll try the CRT Display thread and cross my fingers.
raphael1610 09-02-08, 03:27 AM i've got a strange problem for 3 days,my xbox360 is connected to my LCD via VGA cable, and my xbox360 auto restart after 1-2 hours of playing, although it seems that everythings is OK because i still can hear the sound but i get no picture, and sometimes i cant switch my LCD input to VGA cause it keep turn me back to DVI input, first time i thought it was because of the resolution ,i changed resolution to 1024*768 and it worked OK for 2 days, and now it happens again even at 1024*768,i'm not sure if the problem is with the cable, the LCD or my xbox, cause my box still run after i turn it on after 30 mins resting,my LCD still working, but the problem still happen, anyone know this problem?
my LCD is ASUS VW192T,sorry for my bad English
eis61374 09-02-08, 10:18 PM Good luck stephn!
ooPAYNEoo 09-03-08, 08:29 PM I bought a new HDD and the XBOX updated and after restarting I get an "update failed" message.
Should I have transferred my gamertag 1st? I have no idea how to do these things, and the xbox forums aren't a big help.
...
edit: well now my XBOX freezes every other time I startup, but I can at least get to the load screen. I guess the 9-5 arcade is coming right on time.
danforth 09-17-08, 08:52 PM I recently purchased a new Xbox 360 (Arcade -- using the HDD from my launch Premium). It has only been hooked up since Sunday (9/14). To this point, I have only played "Rock Band 2." On two occasions already, the audio has completely cut out during a song. The only way to regain audio is to either turn the TV or Xbox 360 off and back on, or to switch inputs on the TV (and then back to that of the 360).
The 360 is connected via HDMI. I use the same HDMI cable for both the 360 and PS3 (I manually switch them). I have used this cable for a little over 10 months with no problems. I still use the PS3 quite frequently, and have experienced no problems at all this week. This leads me to believe that it shouldn't be the cable, nor should it be anything regarding the actual HDMI input on the TV or the TV itself. I've found no other reports of this being caused by "RB2," so I assume that it is the 360.
Any suggestions?? Thanks in advance!
gibbes007 09-20-08, 09:28 AM i have a sony receiver and i send the sound from the xbox to get it into the 7.1...but it sounds like there is static there...i even hear it when i play dvds..do i have a bad xbox..is there something i can do to fix this?
tr1gg3rhappyboy 09-20-08, 12:11 PM is it bad if you pull out the power cord when your in the middle of playing a game?
Marcus316 09-20-08, 03:06 PM For 5.1 surround:
1) Connect the 360 to a receiver that feeds your 6 surround speakers via a toslink or a digital coaxial cable (either one will deliver good quality digital transfer to your receiver from the 360, but toslink (aka optical) is preffered.)
2) Set the receiver input to digital/coxial.
3) Set the 360 sound option to 5.1 dolby digital (undre the systems tab in the dashboard).
4) Enjoy! :D
Hi, I'm having a problem with a similar setup! There's no sound! My Xbox 360 is connected to my DVD/AV Receiver (a COBY DVD-755) with a TOSlink cable, that DVD is connected to a subwoofer which is connected to all the other little speakers. But I can't get any sound from my Xbox 360 to the speakers. I set up the xbox properly, and in the DVD's menu I set the sound to SPDIF: (PCM is that right?). Anyone have any ideas? Let me know if you need any more info.
Thanks!
By the way, I tried SPDIF: RAW too and still no sound... :(
KLUNKDM 09-25-08, 07:47 AM Problem: Wireless controllers not Connecting/Syncing.
I thought I would post this since I did a lot of searching to find an answer that worked. Basically none of my 4 wireless controllers would connect to the console. Pushing the guide button would start the console, but not connect. Pushing the sync buttons would act like like it connects, but nothing but a flashing light on the controller after it acted like it found it. I plugged in my Rock Band guitar and the light on the guitar would work, but the console had no light on it for the first controller, but I was able to move around the guide with no issues.
Answer: I found that by unplugging the power cord from the console for a minute, then plugging it back in and pushing the guide button on the controller. That fixed the issue. I have rebooted many times and the controllers are syncing again with no issues :)
JonDotCom 09-25-08, 01:45 PM Well, on the front of the reciever/subwoofer, it says "PT-5500S 5.1CH Surround Reciever Amplifier"
And on the back the only identifying marks say "Digital Research" - that part looks like a logo of some sort, and "PT-5500S" next to that.
If this thing doesn't decode the 5.1 signal, is there some adapter I can buy to be able to plug into the 5.1 inputs on the reciever?
easiest way is to use a digital optical cable from the component cable dongle (you will see a square port on it) and run that to the optical input on the back of the receiver. Then the red and black go to the back of the tv.
That way, you get analog sound to the tv if you want to listen at low levels, or digital optical to the receiver when you want surround sound.
JonDotCom 09-25-08, 01:47 PM My 60gb Pro vibrates like crazy when the dvd/game spins up. Anyone else's do that?
Redoryx 10-01-08, 09:26 AM I was playing Too Human last night on my Elite. I had an errand to do, shut it down, and 1/2 hr later went back to play again. There was no audio or video. I tried other cables and inputs and nothing.
I have it hooked up via HDMI through an A/V receiver and out to the tv. It has been running flawlessly like this for over 1 year.
Any solutions would be greatly appreciated
tsang1101 10-08-08, 03:14 PM No audio or video for me either, hooked up through component. No red rings or anything, and if I restart the console it's fine for about 10mins then goes dark again.... Cable problem maybe? I'd be getting red rings if it was anything else right?
Sundull 10-09-08, 03:31 PM I am having trouble with my 360. It will run fine for a couple minutes, but will start flashing the two left quadrants red, which I'm pretty sure means it is overheating. It shouldn't be overheating because it is placed on a wooden desk with plenty of ventilation. What could be causing this? And, is there any way to fix it without getting it replaced?
DasGoot 10-10-08, 02:59 AM I've somehow managed to keep my launch Xbox from red ringing and just now finally got an HDTV (Samsung LN52a650) Unfortunately no HDMI since its an old xbox, but I do have both component and VGA cables. With either one of them if i choose 1080P or 1920 x 1080 it drops my tv out to a "mode not supported" screen. Anyone have any idea what gives?
I got out the old component cables for the PS3 (using HDMI for it now) just to test and it works just fine displaying 1080p, and I plugged my laptop into the VGA port and set it to 1920 x 1080 it works fine as well so I know those inputs support it.
over component i can do all resolutions except 1080p just fine. over vga only a couple of resolutions work 1360 x 768 being the highest that works. Am I screwed? time to start looking for a new xbox that supports HDMI? and yeah i know most of the games are only 720 anyway but as a crappy bonus 1280 x 720 is one of the resolutions that doesn't work, and i really want to see my old HD-DVD collection in 1080p (whole reason I got a VGA adapter in the first place)

DasGoot 10-11-08, 02:37 AM well I've kind of answered my own question. Had a friend bring over his 360 today (he has the halo one god its ugly) but his works just fine with 1080 resolutions. I guess mine just sucks now I almost wish it would die so I'd have a better excuse for wasting the money to get a new one then i could forgo the vga altogether and get an hdmi model. I wonder if its still covered for red rings, maybe i'll start leaving it running overnight. :) meh i'd probably just get my same system back, or another old one that doesn't see to have the guts to spit out a proper high rez signal.
chad473 10-22-08, 11:16 AM I have a weird issue that I've confirmed is happening on both wired and wireless connections. No matter what, the first time I power up my 360 and try to log in to Live I get a connection error. When I click the link to test the connection, it finds it fine and I'm then able to log in normally. I always get the error on the first login attempt though (even if the 360 has been on a minute or two and then I try to log in to Live)...has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions to look at in the network settings maybe?
DasGoot 10-22-08, 12:23 PM I'd almost wonder if that was your router taking a while to give the Xbox an address or something similar. How do you have it setup right now? Is it pulling all settings automatically? Have you tried manually filling in the settings for it to use?

see, I've had issues before on wireless where it did just take about 30 seconds or so to acquire everything..so sometimes that first login attempt failed but a second would log in without having to go into network settings. Now, I can let it sit for minutes and it always fails the first time. I have it set up to to use dhcp to acquire addresses. I'll give manual a try and see if it helps anything.

Give your 360 it's own IP outside of dhcp and manually open up your ports.
chad473 10-24-08, 06:54 PM well, I just switched it to auto (it was on manual settings before-I was mistaken in the previous post) and it went through the network test fine, with open nat. restarted, and it logged into Live automatically as it should. thanks for the tip.
Morkeleb 10-27-08, 11:18 AM I started getting the "unplayable disc" error on my second 360. I found a fix for it on youtube and since my warranty is up I gave it a shot. Basically it involes cleaning of a motor in the DVD drive. On my first attempt it only solved the issue for a day. So I did the fix again but on the second try I cleaned the coil side of the motor really well. It's been going for 4 days on the second go around. My question is has anyone done this repair with any long term luck or am I delaying the inevitable?
This is the repair video I followed.

Not sure if this question has been asked: I'm hooking up my new holiday bundle Arcade 360 via hdmi to my Onkyo 605. I get video to my TV but no audio out of my receiver. When I hook up the the 360 directly to my tv, I get both video and audio (but only the tv's speakers, not my HT speakers). Am I missing something to get this working properly so my receiver is getting the 5.1?
Update: After changing in the xbox settings my hd resolution from optimal (which was set to my pio's 768p resolution) to any of the other settings -- 720p, 1080p -- the audio on the hdmi began to automagically work.
jhoff80 11-01-08, 04:54 PM I've had my Elite 360 for probably 9 months now, and started getting this intermittently:

Its connected through HDMI, and I don't know, it doesn't seem like GPU artifacting or anything like that, but I guess I don't know for sure. I thought that maybe it was the stress on the HDMI cable so I played with that a little bit, and that did seem to affect the picture on the screen a bit, though it could just be me wanting to believe its not an early sign of an upcoming RROD. :p
Anyway, it didn't actually freeze. In fact I was in the middle of a game of Rock Band 2, finished the song so that I could save and quit, and went back to the dashboard and took the picture. So things were still running fine, it just displayed weird. I don't have any spare HDMI cables to test out, but as soon as I turned the console off and then back on again, the picture displayed correctly. Any idea if I'm right with the cable idea, or if I should be concerned about the health of the console?

Well, I've confirmed its not the cable, I found the component cable that came with the system, and its still doing it on that. Great
AirJarhead 11-15-08, 08:15 PM Hi,
When I first bought my Xbox 360, I experimented with all of the different connections in order to see wich looked the best. When I first tried it, HDMI worked as it should. Both Audio and Video worked and I was able to select 720p, 1080i, etc. Then I tried component, and then VGA. I thought that the HDMI looked the best, but when I tried to go back to HDMI, the first thing I noticed is that the audio didn't work. Then I noticed that I could only select VGA (PC) resolutions (IE-1280x720).
I have tried numerous things to troubleshoot:
-Going back to VGA and changing resolutions, then shutting everything down and trying HDMI
-Changing inputs (with the TV remote) from game to cable, and then back to game (as suggested in a Gamespot forum thread).
-Turning the console on and off with the HDMI cable in
-Using different HDMI cables
-Trying a different TV
-Reseting the display settings by pressing Y and R Trigger on boot up
I can't get it to go back to the way it was the first time I used it. The xbox seems think the HDMI cable is a VGA cable, and therefore looking for a seperate audio input. I verified it was actually the Xbox that had the problem because it does this on both my Sony LCD and my Panasonic Plasma.
I used Google and the search function on this forum to find a solution to this, but found no workable solution.
Please help.
Thanks.

52in Zenith Rear Projection LCD TV - Z52SZ80
Xbox 360 premium system - vga connection
Fios DVR - Motorola 6200
My problem is i keep getting a horizontal line (interference) going accross the screen(lines are are thick and seem to vary between light & dark shade), I know the interference is coming from my verizon fios dvr(hdmi connection). If I disconnect the fios box the lines are gone. If I hook up my friends 360 via HDMI, I have no lines at all but when I hook up my 360 with vga or component I get lines. My 360 has no hdmi so I dont know what else to do..
I have tried moving wires and changing cables but no luck..
Any suggestions are truly appreciated
jloebick 11-17-08, 08:39 AM UPDATE - Never mind! I found out that component cables can't/don't transmit 1080p signals because of copyright laws. How stupid! Now how do I trade in my older Xbox 360 for a newer one with HDMI?
I just picked up a Pioneer PDP-5020FD over the weekend. I hooked up my Xbox 360, via component cables, and changed the display output of the Xbox to 1080p. When at the 1080p setting, nothing shows on the Pioneer, just a black screen. Then, after 10 seconds, the Xbox reverts back to 1080i, as it is supposed to, and I get a picture. Why won’t the Pioneer display a 1080p signal from the Xbox?

i had something similar on my launch console, but it happened under my best buy warranty period so i just took it back without fixing it or waiting for it to RROD.
but now i have another graphic problem, it's more like it switches to a 256 color mode or something...it sort of looks like an embossed filter from photoshop or something gets applied to the screen. that's the only way i know to describe it. it boots up fine but within a couple of minutes the problem comes up. even happens with the hd-dvd drive. doesn't lock up or anything, just screwy video. and it seems to go away when it cools down (like if i go to the xbox live blades and let it sit there for a while).
i'm interested to see what happens to yours. i've been hoping for the RROD so i can get this replaced, but it keeps hanging on to life. good luck.

fooburger 11-19-08, 09:20 AM Hi guys,
Wondering if I can get some helpful advice. I supposedly got the manager at CC to let me bring in my 360(1 1/2 old and get the disc error every night) and exchange for a new one. Question is he told me if I want to keep hard drive I only can exchange for another 20G. I'd hate to get an older one with an old chip, what shoild I be looking for?
I'm connecting a USB flash drive to by 360 and the xbox doesn't find any of the jpeg or gif files on the drive. It reads the drive because it sees the directories on the drive. Any ideas why it's not showing me the pictures?
teckademic 11-21-08, 09:25 AM My 360 just died. I received a replacement last year after my first one died of owning it for about a year and just wondering if the warranty continues from the first one or does it restart everytime you receive a new unit, assuming they have a system to keep track of how many units you have received?

I got this answered in a new thread. The problem turned out to be that picture file names had a .jpeg suffix. When I renamed the files to be .jpg, they showed up on the xbox.

I have a similar problem with my Elite. I get the same distorted picture but my system freezes. No reponse from my remote. I does it even if I just cut my 360 on and leave the dashboard up. Been doing some online research, sounds like my issue is the GPU is loose due to heat build up in the case over time. I just place my 360 vertical, some say that helps. So far it seems to be working fine for the past 10 minutes. We'll see how long before it freezes again. I'm recording video to so I can post it, if it happens again.
Any input would be welcome.

I had the problem fixed. Turned out to be a bad electrical wall jack..

Well now I have the 3 red lights. Wow this sucks! 1 month with no gaming. I don't think I can make it.
I've had my Elite 360 for probably 9 months now, and started getting this intermittently:
http://img507.imageshack.us/img507/997/img00011280xm3.th.jpg (http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00011280xm3.jpg)
http://img507.imageshack.us/my.php?image=img00011280xm3.jpg

Yes that is the look of the GPU dying.

Problem: Audio Lag when selecting Dolby Digital
Setup: New xbox arcade, hdmi to TV through a belkin cable I got as a gift from Target. TV: LG 37LG50 HDMI goes into that, Optical (From Best Buy, again gift) goes from that to my Samsung HT-Z310.
The strange thing is, my PS3 using the same setup, but a Monoprice hdmi, has no lag whatsoever.
Please help!

Did you try switching the HDMI cables (or does the xbox have a special hdmi connector?)?
The xbox just has a plain jane hdmi connector as far as I can tell. I'll give the other cord a shot. Ordered another 6ft from monoprice just in case.
I think if the HDMI doesn't work I"ll just go back to VGA with a toslink splitter so I can have my PS3 and 360 hooked up (But not on) at the same time.
Caribwoy2000 12-11-08, 10:31 AM I just started noticing a relatively wide 2" apart vertical bands start appearing in those inbetween screens. ie just about to load a game etc.
It is just like slightly lighter and darker bands of color or black, color would occurr in the halo loading blue screen for instance, BUT NOT in the actual game
Is this a sign of things to come... I have had the box just over a year now
Thanks

Stealth87 12-14-08, 03:30 PM I've got a problem with my repaired 360 from Microsoft. None of my controllers connect to my console anymore but they do connect to a friends. I've changed the power supply and moved the system to another room but still nothing. The dvd remote I have works fine(it must use a different connection?) but the controllers will not connect and I've been trying everything I can think of and read on the net.
Does anyone know how the 360 controllers are connected with the console? I've thought of trying to fix it myself but I don't know what part or parts I would need. If anyone can help it's much appreciated.

Did you resync them by hitting the sync on the controller and Xbox at the same time?
Stealth87 12-14-08, 04:32 PM Just tried syncing at the same time and the green lights just spin for 10-15 seconds and then stops. The same controllers work on my friends 360 that's why I think it's my 360 that's the problem.
I just took it a part with help from you tube videos and with it a part the controllers connected. I put it back together and they didn't connect. I then took the face plate off and they connected again. The face plate I got back from MS is some way blocking the wireless receiver.
Diplomat 12-14-08, 06:37 PM Not sure if this question has been asked: I'm hooking up my new holiday bundle Arcade 360 via hdmi to my Onkyo 605.
Well, I just got an arcade sytem and the audio through HDMI would not work until I switched back in forth between audio formats on the console menu. Then the second time I went to play it it would no longer work. I cannot recreate what I did. What gives?? I have the HD set to 720 instead of automatic.

I need help in connecting 2 xboxs to the same router.
How about more info. A router has multiple outlets that a cable can be run from. Look at the back. If you don't have a router and you mean your modem then you will need a router. Using a wireless router you can get the MS wireless connections that plug into the USB port.
gmoney80 12-15-08, 10:37 PM Alright so i have my 360 set up as a media center extender and it is hooked via ethernet directly to my dsl router, and the lag time is ridiculous it takes about 20-30 seconds for the commands to respond on the 360 for example if you push up it takes that long to respond. But here is the kicker when i play movies or music it streams them perfectly no lag at all. Can anyone help me this is extremely annoying. Thanks all.

Same exact problem here.. even with 8 bars in the Test network connection speed wizard! I posted in another thread and sent an email to an MS rep I met in a BB store.. I am still waiting for an answer.
Btw what OS are you running on your computer? I am running 64 Vista.

ProblemHouston 12-26-08, 09:52 PM I have a Belkin "G" router that is about 3 years old and I have been trying to play COD W@W in both the bedroom and the living room. The one in the living room is connected with about a 3 foot cable and I have a 50 foot cable running to the one in the bedroom. We put the game disc in each box and the person in the livingroom would invite the person in the bedroom to a party. Everything would seem to be running OK but as soon as the system would find a game to put us in it would drop one of us out of the room and wouldnt allow the the one that was dropped to enter that room even if there was space. Am I doing something wrong?
toledogolf 12-27-08, 10:42 AM I bought the boys an XBox 360 for Christmas. I will not let them hook it up on my Panny so they are using a Toshiba 32A41 which is 32 inches, says it has 750 horixontal and 3 line digital comb filter. It has 2 A/V and S Video. I do not have surround for this so no 5.1 optical worries yet. Right now I used the componet that came with the S Video and put it on the non HD setting. I found the XBox 360 with S Video out on Monoprice and am thinking of getting it. Would this help with picture quality? Do I set it to HDTV or standard if it still has the switch?

yeah, s-video is worth upgrading to over composite. especially for the $6 or so monoprice charges. And you would set it to Standard def.
Got new Onkyo 806 Amp. I set up speakers and then Virgin HD cable TV box via hdmi, all works fine. I then tried Xbox 360...nothing, just blue screen on Phillips 42 1080i. Finally tried 6 plug Xbox comp lead and got a great picture and sound ( tested using COD Wow and Fifa 2009) with this but wondering why HDMI didnt work. The HDMI cable is fine as works going direct from xbox to TV and also success when tried from cable box to Amp.
Apologies for ignorance but all help greatly appreciated
Do I need to resent Xbox?
Bill McNeal 01-13-09, 02:13 AM This isn't really a problem, but I'm not very knowledged with XBox and Live. I have a couple of questions:
1) If I only get a Live Silver account only, will it have all of the same free/paid DLC as Gold, or will there be any DLC/updates that I won't be able to access?
2) My internet connection is with my computer only. If I want to access Live using the same connection, is the best solution to set up a network using a router and buying the $90 wireless adapter for the 360?
ddrheretic 01-15-09, 02:25 AM My xbox 360 is around 1.5 years old. Treated well for the most part. I keep it cool and decently clean.. The problem is that for the last month or so my dvd drive doesn't want to load up games all the time.. It may take me 5 or 10 times of poping the disc in and out to get it to load. Once the game has loaded if I leave it in and leave the 360 on it will load the game no problem even if I go back to the play an arcade game or whatever..
Here is what has me totally confused.. I have a copy of the last remnant and it would not load up at all.. I'm talking 20 min of popping this sob in and out of my 360.. So finally I take the game out and give the area above the dvd drive a few taps with my knuckles.. Pop LR back in and BAM it works for the first time. Now after I did the knuckle thing my dvd drive made a different noise instead of a wierd kinda UUURRT (which means it's not going to load) noise it was smooth sounding and LR loaded up within seconds..
Any clues? Any idea's?
thanks
If it comes down to it I won't hesitate to pimp smack my 360 so I can play games. =)

Sometimes content is delayed for Silver account holders, so Gold ones get it sooner. Silver members have to be patient. There may be some content or offers that only Gold members get.
Wireless is not a requirement, you could just use cable to a router if the router and Xbox are conveniently close to each other. But if you are buying a router, make sure it has wireless, and at least 802.11g. And if you plan to use wireless, check the Xbox compatibility list on www.xbox.com before buying the router.
Edit - added information:-
Another way of doing it, which I should have mentioned, is to use a wireless print server. This is a device that is connected to your Xbox via wire (don't purchase the Xbox 360 wireless gizmo), and the print server connects wirelessly to your router.
The advantage of this approach is that a wireless print server can concurrently connect multiple devices, other Xboxes, other consoles, computers and even printers.
It is about the same cost as the Xbox 360 wireless adapter, maybe cheaper.
This is my first post on the forums so please be gentle lol. I recently bought a 32LG30 LCD tv and originally had my X360 hooked up via Component Cables. The picture looks amazing. I had been reading that HDMI cables are the way to go, so I purchased one that microsoft offers for the 360. When using the HDMI cable I seem to get a darker picture than that of the components. Any suggestions such as settings or anything like that? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

L35HARK 01-19-09, 12:08 PM I have my PC on-line using a wireless broadband dongle, through 3g (my ISP). The name of the modem is a Huawei 3g i think. I have no phone line or router, my usb dongle is plug and play on any PC or laptop, giving me HDSPA access.
When i connect the modem to the xbox's usb nothing happens, other than a flashing light on the dongle indicating it is receiving power.
When i test the connection on the xbox's dashboard it says 'status - disconnected'.
Microsoft's call centre was hilariously unhelpful! :)
Can anyone pls pls help!? I am dying to play cod 4 and 5 on-line!!

i wouldn't think that would work. nothing on the xbox to drive a USB network adapter. i assume they wouldn't build in support for a product to replace the microsoft wireless adapter.
you need something like this: http://www.amazon.com/Linksys-Wireless-B-Game-Adapter-WGA11B/dp/B0002M4HXC
it's a standalone device with an ethernet port, so your xbox thinks it's connected via a wire. the adapter i linked is an old one and it's slow (802.11b), but it's fast enough for your internet connection and i've used it for 5 years without any lag or problems.

I have a 360 Elite for almost 2 years.I never had a problem with it. It's hooked up to my av reciever through HDMI (along with my PS3,DVD player,etc.).
The other day I turned on my 360 and started playing COD 4. After about 10 minutes the picture turned blue and red. I can still play the game, but the color was all messed up(everything was blue & red). I took the game out, turned the 360 off for a few minutes, then turned it back on. After a few minutes in the xbox dashboard the picture turned a blueish green. I can still see what's happening on screen, but there is a blueish green tint covering everything.
Next I unhooked the HDMI cable from the 360 to the reciever, and connected the 360 through component to the TV. The same thing is happening.
Does anyone know what's happening to my 360? Will I be able to fix this problem,or will I have to send it in for repairs???
THIS REALLY SUCKS

At the risk of sounding "well, duh" obvious, it sounds like the GPU is perhaps going bye-bye. Given that you tried it with both HDMI and component, so it seems you've eliminated the cable, the port, and the television as the sources of the problem. It's probably time to give Microsoft a call.

Luisfc1972 01-22-09, 10:07 PM i dont think this is a problem but i want to make sure i have my new xbox 360 pro set up right. the pro came with the cable with hdmi and optical hookups. i did the mod where you pry off the gray surrounding case so i dont have to spend another $50 for the hdmi adapter.
i plugged the hdmi cable from my 1080p tv to the hdmi slot in the xbox and i plugged in the optical from my receiver to the hdmi cable my xbox came with. but i didnt connect the component plugs from the hdmi cable that came with the xbox to my tv.
the xbox autodetected 1080p on my tv. just want to make sure everything is good. i played a demo lego star wars and it looks good. is it necessary to plug in the component plugs from the hdmi cable that came with the pro to my tv even though i have hdmi cable hooked up from xbox to tv?
craig_wagner 01-22-09, 11:34 PM is it necessary to plug in the component plugs from the hdmi cable that came with the pro to my tv even though i have hdmi cable hooked up from xbox to tv?
No. The only reason to do that, and it wouldn't be a good one, is if you wanted to be able to play the 360 using either the HDMI input of your TV or the component input of your TV.
Hooking up your A/V components is just about input and output. The 360 will output video over HDMI, Component, Composite, or VGA. You only need to hook up one of those to the device that takes video in (i.e. your TV).
Luisfc1972 01-23-09, 07:56 PM cool, thanks. ill just leave it plugged in the way it is via hdmi
another question
ive been trying arcade demos that are available which are only 16 games?
i thought there were a ton more demos than that? not sure why only 16 game demos are available to me.
craig_wagner 01-23-09, 08:49 PM i thought there were a ton more demos than that? not sure why only 16 game demos are available to me.
Because those are the only ones that ship on the hard drive with the console. You have to download additional ones from the marketplace.
Seriously, you need to just start exploring the console and reading more.

I wanted to run just a single hdmi from the av receiver to the projector so I thought I was going to run all my stuff to the receiver but now I wonder (after the drywall is up) if I needed another cable run to the projector area for the 360? Or is there a way to run my 360 component cables to the receiver and then the video will be sent to the projector via the hdmi that is already run there? Or am I miising something? Please help a noob

Obviously you have no choice but to run component from your 360 to something. The question is, do you need to run it directly to the projector or can you run it to the receiver and have the receiver pass it to the projector. The answer depends on whether your receiver will upconvert the component signal to HDMI. Some, like the Yamaha RX-V1800, Denon AVR-2809CI, or Onkyo TX-SR806 will upconvert incoming S-Video and component to HDMI. Others won't.
In short, you need to understand the capabilities of the equipment you've got before that question can be answered.
BigBeez315 01-26-09, 07:05 PM So I've had my 360 for a little over a month now and about 3 days ago, I went to turn it on and nothing happened. Then i noticed that the power supply light wasnt even on. I tried Different outlets and that didnt work. Would this be a problem with the power supply box or the power supply cable? Or would it be the 360 itself? I called up the xbox hotline and there is a one year manufacturer guarantee and they can send me the new power supply if thats what i needed. It would take like 4 weeks, which sucks, but it would be worth doing that than just returning the entire xbox for a new one. I have several hours saved on Fallout 3 and i'm really NOT trying to:confused: lose all of that **** lol. So somebody please let me know what you think the problem might be. Thanks

Try re-seating the cables into the wall socket, the power supply and the Xbox. I'm hoping that this will fix it. I had this issue a couple of times, and it was because I'd moved the wires slightly, enough to disconnect

i had the same situation after a lightning strike. so i went to best buy and bought another xbox and tried the power supply. verified it was just a dead power supply, so i returned the new xbox (30 day return policy), then got a warranty replacement on the dead power supply.
BigBeez315 01-26-09, 09:22 PM I tried Re-seating everything but that didn't work. It looks like I am just going to send it back. I just wish i knew what could have caused it to crap out only after a months use.
jhoff80 01-27-09, 05:47 PM My out of warranty 360 is artifacting again, after I temporarily fixed it by removing the X-clamps and using screws, so I'll be unfortunately buying a new one. Since I already have the 120GB HDD and wireless controllers and everything, I'm just going to go for the arcade, and maybe transplant the guts of the arcade into my Elite's case since the white bothers me.
Anyway, here's hoping that the newer Jaspers have less issues.
Help!
my brother gave me his old 360 since he upgraded to the Elite. I've tried hooking Xbox up to my SXRD 60A2000 Sony television. I'm using component and when I select 720p or 1080i resolution it momentarily switches to new resolution and ask me if I want to keep these settings and when I accept the screen goes blank and it defaults back to 480. Bad cable or any ideas. Is there a master reset for the console.
thx,
rick
what is the switch set to on the housing of the component cables? there are 2 settings one says tv the other says hdtv.
the other way is this way:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/911059
the gist of it is:
Remove any discs from the disc tray.
Turn off the console.
Turn on the console.
Note If you are using an Xbox 360 Wireless Controller, turn on the console by using the Xbox Guide button on the controller. Wait for the guide light to indicate that the controller has linked to the console.
Note Make sure that you use the player 1 controller when you do this. The player 1 controller is indicated by the upper-left quadrant light on the console.
As the console starts, press and hold the Y button as you pull the right trigger.
Note This action causes the Xbox Dashboard to reset the display settings to the default settings. The console then automatically restarts.
this should work
GBO Possum 01-30-09, 06:27 PM Have you tried 1080p on your SXRD 60A2000? I have a 60A2020 running very nicely at 1080p, but I have to say I have not tried any other setting

duh.....never noticed the slider for TV & HDTV. Thanks, that did it. My TV will not accept 1080p through component, but 1080i looks great.
Defiant 1317 02-01-09, 10:41 AM I have a Samsung LN37A550 and the AVR 254. My 360 is connected to the AVR with HDMI and 2 analog RCA audio cables (I'm waiting on the optical to coxial adapter for the audio) and sound is fine. The AVR is connected to the TV by HDMI cable. The HDMI cables are two cables with a HDMI extended. The cable run is 36 feet.
The problem is that the signal goes black, on and off very quickly sometimes, and sometimes stays black. The tv reports searching for signal. This does NOT seem to happen when watching a dvd - only when the 360 dashboard screens or a game is played. I tried several games and still the same problem.
I have updated the AVR firmware to 95-1-1 and have updated the 360's software as of last night 1-31-09.
The 360 plays great - I get sound and video through HDMI - when attached ditrectly to the TV.
The TV is updated to latest verison and still the problem continues. Cable TV plays fine. PS3 has occasional brief flashes of white, green and or pink-usually when changing screens. Not too big of a deal.
Pc hook ups no problem either.
Noubourne 02-01-09, 11:07 AM I have a problem that others seem to have had, but I have yet to find a solution for it. I have never been able to use my 360 as an extender.
I have an ASUS router - my PC and xbox are both wired.
I have a Vista Home Premium PC will all the updates installed.
I can detect the PC is connected through my Xbox 360 System Settings area.
When I try to connect it using the Windows Media Center option, it gets stuck at the same point every time. On WIndows Media Center, after entering the 8-digit code, it continues and then says Connecting to Extender. Then I hear the new hardware found sound on my PC. When I go look, it tells me that it needs a driver for the 360 extender device. It fails to install every time.
I have not been able to find out if there is a manual way to install this driver. Also, Xbox support told me I have to contact Microsoft - and of course I have no intention of paying $60 for them to tell me they can't fix it.
Am I stuck waiting for Windows 7?
I sure would like to access some of the media on my PC. All my music is on there and I have no intention of cluttering the 360 hard drive with it. I need that for games.
Anyone seen this - or maybe know how to help?
Luisfc1972 02-01-09, 05:54 PM headphones and mic not working. ive looked through the xbox menu and i do not see an option for "settings". the manual doesnt say anything.
is there a settings option and im missing it somehow? i just want to be able to use headphones and mic for online play but i dont hear anything.
rodimus79 02-02-09, 09:28 AM Man, the 360 is really starting to get on my nerves..
My machine's GPU died last week, just a few months after my warranty expired.
After trying to fix the machine, I saw the motherboard/GPU were essentially shot, so I settled for just picking up an arcade unit.
I hooked up my arcade 360 via HDMI to my onkyo 805 receiver (my Tivo and PS3 work fine over HDMI to my TV from the receiver).. No signal (despite having given the 360 the proper assignment on my receiver).. I tried it on multiple inputs, using multiple HDMI cables and nothing. When I ran the HDMI cable straight to the TV it worked. I have no idea why there would be a pass-through issue here. Considering I only have 1 HDMI input on my TV, this is an issue.
Does anyone have the slightest idea what my problem might be?
Any help is much appreciated.

I don't believe there is a settings issue, its a hardware "flaw". Every time i plug in the headphone/mic that came with my 360 it never works the first time. Use a combination of turning the switch on/off a couple times and unplugging and plugging in the headset. (I think its has to be switched to off before you plug it in) Only after fiddling with it for a minute or so, does it work.
Hope this helps.
Does anyone know if replacing the disc drive in a 360 will result in Microsoft labeling my box as "modded" and freezing me out of live? My drive is starting to not recognize about 30% of my discs at all (it simply stopped recognizing Fable 2, R6V2 and Scene It) and I am well out of warranty. I was going to swap out the disc drive myself but have heard that this could get me kicked off live. If this is the case, I'll eventually just move this 360 into the bedroom as a Netflix streaming box and part-time gaming console while I upgrade to an elite in my main HT. However, being 95% through Fable 2 with just Knothole Island and some side quests remaining and not being able to finish the game is beyond annoying.

I'm still using XP Pro, but this might help. I wanted to stream music/movies/pictures from my computer to my 360, but of course don't have WMC or something equivalent.
Turn on you Xbox, Go to Windows media player on your computer, (I'm running WMP 11) under Library click Media Sharing. Check share media, your 360 should appear in the window, highlight it and click allow. Also I went to Settings in that window and changed under the "Share Media as" title to WMP11 so I would be able to identify it on my 360. Under customize you can select what type of media (music/pictures/video) you want to share.
You can alternatively use Zune software to do the same thing (and I have been successful with that to). Supposedly itunes will share media, but i was never able to get it to work on my roommates computer. Happy streaming.
Luisfc1972 02-02-09, 04:22 PM man something strange just happened. i have been playing star wars unleashed for a few days. the last time i played i turned the xbox off and left the game in there. i then decided to position the xbox flat on the table instead of how i had it upright.
i turned xbox and tv on. xbox logo comes on screen then the screen goes blank/black. tried again and same thing happened.
i then decided to just position the xbox upright like before and voila the game worked.

I have an elite hooked up to an onkyo 805 also and had had the same problem. It would resolve it's self by turning off the receiver than on again while the xbox is on. Its very annoying. Hope that helps.
One problem that I've been having is trying to get hdmi audio to work with the 805. I'm going to try the new update that's out but I have my doubts that it will work since I had this problem before the new dashboard update. I've heard of other people have this issue but never heard of a fix. Anyone?
Thanks,
James

jhoff80 02-04-09, 01:23 PM If you're having an issue with your 360 and receiver HDMI handshaking, try attaching the audio dongle to the 360. I had this at first on my HDMI receiver, and when I did that the problem went away. You don't actually have to connect the dongle's audio wires or anything though.
rodimus79 02-05-09, 10:53 AM Thanks for the tip, I'll give it a shot. Peculiar how that would happen.

IceMaN30 02-06-09, 12:42 PM Well I fixed my hdmi audio problem for those that are interested. I had to change the output resolution on my xbox and immediately the sound started to work. I'm not sure as to why this triggered it but its working.
Noubourne 02-08-09, 11:13 AM The last 360 patch was for the HDMI Audio issue, so that may have helped you a long a bit as well.

Thanks for the response. I was already sharing all my media, so this wasn't it. I changed my Share Media As for the heck of it, but all it did was change the label for my computer when it shows up on the 360. I still can't connect.
On my Xbox360, I can run the PC Connection test with no issues. When I go to stream music, for instance, then I get the message:
"Can't Connect. Make sure you have activated this console on your computer."
It won't read anything from my library, music, sound or pictures - I have tried them all and I get the same message from all of them.
Anyone having any problems with boot times for their machine.
Mine is sitting at the xbox title screen for quite a long time when it is first turned on. Also, it sounded like the laser was searching (kind of a squeek noise), then when it finally booted, it did not think there was a disc in the tray. It was fine up until this afternoon.
Thanks,
Tyler
Noubourne 02-10-09, 07:55 PM Well I found out how to solve my problem.
No matter what I did with anything, Vista would always fail to install the driver for my Xbox Media Center Extender device. Each time I began setup, it would find the device, and then fail to install the driver. It was this failure that eventually pointed me in the right direction.
In Event Manager, I got an event ID 405 showing up, which said: Windows Media Center Extender setup failed with the following error code: -209
It always listed the source as Mcx2Dvcs. The extender did not show up in Device Manager, and pointing to the various INF directories would not make Vista find the driver and get it installed correctly.
This Event ID 405 with error code 209 showed up in Event Manager every time I tried to set up the connection to my Xbox 360 Media Center Extender.
I could not stream anything to my Xbox 360, and due to the problem above, I could not set up my Xbox 360 as a Media Center Extender.
Much online searching and many hours of futile router configuration and reconfiguration finally led me to the green button forum, where I was directed in a strange post to go to a Logitech forum post (http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board/message?board.id=bluetooth&message.id=3755) where someone found a way to fix this error 209 for media center extenders, which also happens to cause problems for Logitech mice and other devices.
The problem I had was caused by a corrupted Vista driver database.
In one post on the logitech forum, he explains the (hard) way to delete these files from your Windows/INF folder:
DRVINDEX.DAT
INFPUB.DAT
INFSTOR.DAT
INFSTRNG.DAT
INFCACHE.*
SETUPAPI.*
A post further down pointed to a dead link for a tool that would allow you to change ownership of these files while inside Vista. That was frustrating because I don't have a printer and I did not want to write down all his instructions for the hard way. I searched Google and found a good link for it. It is called Vista Right Click Own 2.0 (http://dotnetwizard.net/vista-stuff/vista-right-click-own-20/).
I installed it, and then took ownership of the files listed above, and then deleted all of them.
Then I rebooted, and tried the Xbox 360 Media Center Extender setup again. BAM!
It works. Nice to be able to stream my 1TB of music and videos that I was previously locked out of. I REALLY REALLY REALLY LOVE my Xbox 360 now!!
Hope this can help anyone else who might be stuck with this really weird issue.
Kamikaze Moron 02-11-09, 01:11 AM Hey I'm trying to play videos on my Xbox 360 via an external HD and for some reason the bottom of the video is cut off.
First off I'm using the AVS video converter 6 to convert mkv to avi so that the xbox can read it. I am able to get video audio and subs to work which is more then i can say for all the other apps that I have tried.
Normaly the little bit of stuff at the bottom wouldn't bother me but I am watching videos with subtitles and It is cutting them off on me.
Anyway to correct this? Is it possible to adjust the output size in AVS to make up for the error on the xbox?
Hope this is the right place to post this.
formulanerd 02-11-09, 11:09 AM can you alter subtitle position when you make the video?
are the videos cut off on the pc?
sounds like overscan on your tv.
Luisfc1972 02-11-09, 11:39 AM i still cannot get the mic and headphones to work.
i have the xbox hooked up to 5.1 surround system via optical.
the headset i plug into the controller. the surround system works but the headphones dont.

its the official MS troubleshooting guide for the microphone not working
one common thing that may be happening is simply the batteries are running low. i notice it all the time with my set. when my mic stops working i change the batt's. i used to have a rechargeable batt, but kinda f'd up the cable and so cant recharge. but it would the same thing on either batteries or rechargable ones.
hi guys,
I'm new to Xbox and have a quick question. Do I need the Xbox remote to enable my Harmony? I can find the Xbox on the Logitech database, but I'm not getting any response from the remote functions.
GBO Possum 02-21-09, 10:13 PM For what it's worth, I have a Harmony One working easily with Xbox 360, no special setup required. It all just happened! Love it.
Does the 360 require any adapters to make the harmony 880 work?
formulanerd 02-21-09, 11:10 PM Does the 360 require any adapters to make the harmony 880 work?
nope... same IR sensor that every other piece of electronics (except the ps3) you own have.
How about a setting with in the console?
formulanerd 02-22-09, 12:04 AM again, any IR universal remote works fine.... i've used a one-4-all, harmony 676, and harmony 520.

LR6AGB001 02-24-09, 02:58 PM Yeah Xbox.com is working...relatively slow but it's working now. I had a couple of other people run the same tests and I'm not alone. Majority of those on my FL are having issues as well.
d james 02-24-09, 04:26 PM any you guys send in a console for repair and have a broken unit returned? I just got mine back for havig the 3 rings of death and now the unit doesn't even power up, not even a hint of power. They told me it must be the power supply, but it shows a yellow light and before i sent it in, it had a green light with the 3 red rings. They said they always check them before sending the repaired units back out. I waited almost 2 weeks for this thing, now I have to wait again. I hope this is a rare occurance, cause this should not happen to anyone.
jester959 02-27-09, 06:36 PM Alright I need some help here.
I've done a lotta research so I think I know what the problem is, but there's one part of it that makes me think there's a way to solve it. I always seem to confuse people detailing this so I'll do it as best as I can, heh.
I have a Samsung plasma PNA650 TV. It has an optical out on it.
I have a Yamaha YHT-370 (I think.. it's from a HTIB) receiver. It has no HDMI jacks on it, and 2 optical inputs. It has 1 coaxial input.
I have 3 devices. A Motorola Cable Box, a brand new HDMI 360, and a Toshiba HD-DVD player. Prior to what i'm about to detail, I had the 360 & HD-DVD player plugged directly into the receiver with optical, and the Cable box plugged into the receiver with a coaxial. This worked fine, but it was additional cables and my cable box & 360 couldn't be on at the same time for audio to work for some reason.
NOW -- I have all 3 devices plugged into my TV with 1.3a HDMI cables. I have an optical cable going from the TV to the receiver.
My 360 & HD-DVD player, are stuck with a 'PCM' light on the receiver & only two speakers being used. Except, there is sound coming from all 5 speakers, including my powered sub.
When I went into the Motorola Cable box setup menu I changed the HDMI audio to passthrough. Upon doing so, my receiver properly displayed 5.1 DD on channels that supported it.
I've discovered most TV's don't send the whole digital signal or what have ya, but then what's the point of having an optical jack on the TV in the first place? Also, even though I had to "force" it, my cable box is properly getting the 5.1 sound from the TV, which obviously is from the passthrough setting. If the 360 & HD-DVD player had this setting, would they work as well? I upgraded my 2006 360 to a newer model for HDMI, and also to clear up the cables a bit. I really don't want to have to buy the $50 HDMI/Optical combo cable from microsoft, because that would make the whole process sort of pointless aside from having HDMI for 360 video. I would have to go back to using all 3 digital inputs on the receiver. (2 opticals & 1 coaxial)
Anyways, I'm at a loss here. A buddy of mine has a 2 year old LG LCD and he's only running one optical cable from the TV to the receiver, and he supposedly gets full DD 5.1 from his 360, PS3 and cable box.
John Brown 03-01-09, 03:50 PM jester, i think we are having the same problem: just got a new Kuro plasma so my elite 360 will in theory make use of its HDMI connection. but when i connect the 360 to the tv, and allow my receiver (seems similar to your receiver: no HDMI, just coax and several opticals...) to be connected to the tv via optical....i am not getting 5.1 digital. i can only get dolby pro logic II, at best. i myself can actually notice the downgrade in sound quality, annoyingly, because with my older crt tv, running with the same elite 360, i was getting 5.i digital sound---because i was using the component 360 hookup with the imbedded optical connector, which went straight to the receiver.
i loved the digital sound and i cant get it no matter what i have tried with my receiver. i talked to a best buy Geek Squad fella and all he could figure was that i need a newer digital receiver, with HDMI.....but that sounds ridiculous to me. I assume that the tv connected to the receiver via an optical or digital coaxial should allow me to use the 360's HDMI-digital sound!!
if he is right that is surely lame. but when i look up various articles on 5.1 digital, i did seem to find some idea articulated, similar to the Geek Squad guy: namely, that the "digital sound source (the 360 in this case) needs to be directly connected to the digital, decoding receiver." and with my old hook-up using components and the imbedded opticals, that is in fact what was going on: the 360 audio was runnign directly to the receiver, whereas now you and i have the HDMI running straight from the 360 to the tv.
so what, are we going to have to upgrade receivers or do we just have to figure something out with our present receivers?
good luck
John Brown 03-01-09, 04:20 PM a simple enough question:
if trying to get dolby digital 5.1 audio from my XBOX elite 360 with my older digital receiver, does the HDMI connection for the xbox ABSOLUTELY NEED TO CONNECT DIRECTLY TO A RECEIVER THAT ITSELF HAS HDMI?
in other words, my digital receiver is about 4 years old and has no HDMI connections, only optical and coaxial. so my TV has to be hooked to the 360 by the HDMI, but my receiver is then connected to my tv by an optical input. Now common sense told me that i would be getting 5.1 digital with this connection method: but i am not. I can only get Pro Logic II, at best.
so again: does the 360's HDMI have to be connected directly to a receiver in order to have your receiver produce discrete 5.1 sound? This would mean everyone who wants to connect their elite 360's with HDMI and get digital sound are screwed unless they have a newer model of receiver, with HDMI inputs. and that hardly sounds right, considering that i was getting 5.1 sound with the 360's component connection with its included optical cable.
But this incompatibility may be right, or the case, and that does stink horribly...anyone have the solution to this....thx
craig_wagner 03-01-09, 05:11 PM all he could figure was that i need a newer digital receiver, with HDMI.....but that sounds ridiculous to me. I assume that the tv connected to the receiver via an optical or digital coaxial should allow me to use the 360's HDMI-digital sound!!
Whether it sounds ridiculous to you or not, it appears that that is the case, and assuming won't make it work differently.
I'm just speculating here, but it's possible that the TV is only passing through the audio signal that it has already processed. You should check your TV manual to see what it's sending out that optical jack (post-processed audio or pass-through). If it's not in the manual, try sending Pioneer an email through their support site. The television is the culprit here, and until you know for certain what it is capable of doing with that optical out it's just guesswork.
a simple enough question:
But the answer is not so simple, because other components are involved.
if trying to get dolby digital 5.1 audio from my XBOX elite 360 with my older digital receiver, does the HDMI connection for the xbox ABSOLUTELY NEED TO CONNECT DIRECTLY TO A RECEIVER THAT ITSELF HAS HDMI?
No, you can run optical from your 360 to your receiver. That's how I have mine hooked up. The video goes from the 360 to my 6010, and audio goes to my (older) Yamaha RX-V1500 via optical.
so again: does the 360's HDMI have to be connected directly to a receiver in order to have your receiver produce discrete 5.1 sound?
That's a slightly different question, but again the answer is a qualified no. The qualifier is that whatever you did hook up the HDMI to has the ability to pass the signal through to another device unaltered.
This would mean everyone who wants to connect their elite 360's with HDMI and get digital sound are screwed unless they have a newer model of receiver, with HDMI inputs.
No, you can run optical to your receiver from the 360 to get 5.1 sound.

I just got a proper TV, and I've been running into a related problem with HDMI and digital audio. I think both of you might benefit from Chad Ledford's advice. This is my second post, so I can't give you a URL yet, but if you Google "xbox hdmi audio hack" his post (or a link to if from Digg) should be near the top.
Basically, you just end up using HDMI next to the digital out from the pack-in cable. It looks like a pretty easy hack, and it's not like it's a cable I'll use for anything else, so I'm going to try it tomorrow.

Dude!! I owe you one. I went to his site, and sure enough the 'hack' which only involved removing the plastic casing around the standard component A/V cable worked like a charm! I snipped off all the extra wires, covered it up with electrical tape and now I've got an optical going directly to my receiver and the HDMI to the TV. I got my digital sound back. I'm back to having to use all 3 digital inputs on my receiver again, but at least its working.
Hi all - I have a very strange HDMI problem which just began happening last night.
Since my purchase of an Arcade 360 (Falcon) November 2007 I normally ran it through the VGA cable to my Sony HDTV but I have used s-video and component cables through the 360 as well with no issues. I tried hooking the 360 up via HDMI last night and all I was able to view was 480x640 in 4:3. I was not given the option of any "video" resolutions like 720p or 1080i. It seemed the 360 was reading the HDMI cable as a VGA cable.
I restarted the 360 and the same thing happened. I went back and tried all three other cables (VGA, s-video, component) and they all worked fine. Went back to the HDMI cable and, again, 480x640 in 4:3.
Yes, the Sony is HDCP compatible (I've used both HD DVD and DVHS players via HDMI) and the HDMI cable itself is fine (later that evening I used it to watch an HD DVD on my HD-XA1). Any ideas on this one? It seems very odd to me.

yes well i had the dongle and tried going from the 360 to my receiver via optical, while running the HDMI from the 360 straight to the TV, and i figured this was the solution.
never even knew what that dongle was for....as it turns out, though, i am still getting only Pro Logic, analog sound. It just seems as if this should be something automatic, if my 360 is set up right and my receiver is set to automatically recognize a digital signal and prefer it, if their is one...
as the gentleman says, the problem may lie with my new television, and some audio output setting for its sole optical output. any further advice isd appreciated, but i am afraid i may just have to crack the somewhat peculiar logic of the receiver's "digital assignment functions." i did it before through component and on a primitive CRT TV with no HDMI or optical inputs at all, so what is the problem now with my fancy set-up!
i guess i will try the component- cable-hack method, but it shouldn't work any better than use of the actual dongle...
ayuda me!

orijonl 03-03-09, 12:00 PM I have recently connected my 360 to a new LCD tv by hdmi cable. Everything works beautifully until I try to play a video on the 360, then it plays, but the screen has a purple tint. This will continue until I reboot the box. It happens on all movies, no matter whether they are streamed from my PC, played from a disk, or played from Xbox Live. I haven't tried my old component cables to see if the problem persists, but I never had this problem using them before.

I did a google for "xbox 360 purple tint" and found a bunch of hits. The first one is from the MS support forum.

abrown101 03-03-09, 01:13 PM Hi.
Purchased an Arcade Jasper. Have hdmi connected from 360 to hdtv. Everything works fine. I wanted 5.1 sound so I bought an xbox360 cable from monoprice with optical out connector/component/composite connectors on it. When I use this cable I get no video or audio at all. Thought it was defective so got another one and still same problem. Is there something in the xbox360 settings that I need to change or is my xbox360 port on the back defective?

Use hdmi from xbox360 to tv for video and mute the sound on my hdtv.
Use the xbox360 cable and run an optical cable from the optical port on the xbox360 cable to my receiver for 5.1 sound.

Thanks, I will try this when I get home. I couldn't figure out how you found that so easily, when I've been looking around for a couple of days. The difference is the word "tint" in the search. I had been searching for "xbox 360 purple video" and couldn't find anything worth mentioning.
Thanks again.

Use the xbox360 cable and run an optical cable from the optical port on the xbox360 cable to my receiver for 5.1 sound.
Trying to use the component cables for the optical while having the hdmi connected would not work. If the 360 senses an HDMI connection, it will not output anything on component a/v side.

This might depend on the 360 model. I just got a new Arcade Jasper (manufactured date of 2/01/09), and I am using my old component A/V connector for its optical jack to my receiver and a HDMI cable from the 360 to the TV. I get HDMI video on the TV and 5.1 from my receiver just fine. I had to use the 'hack' mentioned earlier in the thread which involved taking the plastic casing off the old component A/V cable so that it would fit in conjunction with an HDMI cable. Works like a charm.

Thanks for confirming that this setup works. This is exactly what I want to do...just use the optical out on the a/v cable and use hdmi for video.
I have even tried disconnecting my hdmi and using only the new xbox360 cable with optical/component but still no video or audio. I can't believe monoprice would send me 2 defective cables but maybe this model cable is just crap....
I guess I'll have to find someone who is willing to test my cable on their 360 or let me borrow their microsoft a/v cable.

I've bought a lot of stuff from monoprice over the years and never had a problem. It's possible I suppose, but it seems unlikely you'd get two dud cables.
Monoprice seems to have a couple of different options. Which cable did you get?

I'm going to assume it was the first one, as that is 360-specific.
First question would be, did you set the switch on the plug to HD?
Also, JChin's response is a little confusing because he talks about component and optical at the same time, but I think he may be on to one thing. When you hooked up the component connectors for video, did you disconnect the HDMI cable from the 360 or the television? If you left the HDMI connected to the 360 that might explain why you didn't get any video when using the component connectors (assuming the switch was in the HD position of course).

Yes, I got the first cable you mentioned that is for the xbox360 only.
It does have an HD/SD switch at the base of the cable and a component/av-svideo switch to go between the component and the composite/svideo cable.
All my troubleshooting is with the hdmi cable disconnected, xbox360 powered off and then hooking up the new cable. I had it set to every combination with my hdtv and no video or audio. I even hooked up my xbox360 to my old crt tv and switched the cable to sd and composite/svideo and still nothing.
I'm thinking the xbox is to blame. I'll still try to find someone with an xbox and do some troubleshooting by swapping my cables with the original microsoft hd av cable that comes the the pro version.
danieljh1 03-07-09, 09:43 AM Hi,
I have recently purchased a second hand Xbox 360 around November. The Xbox is about 3 years old. It has been brilliant to play on and suddenly it sarted freezing. i was playing COD 4 when it froze the first time. It made a strange noise and then fuzzy lines appeared running verticly down the screen. I thought the disk must have dust or something on it so cleaned it and carried on playing. No problem! Then the problem detiriated from that day onwards. I now struggle to receive 15 minutes gameplay without freezing.
Please tell me what wrong and what I should do.
Daniel

orijonl 03-10-09, 02:40 PM @jester959
I can also verify that this works on a 2007 model premium. I am using the hdmi out for video and a universal AV cable from Gamestop (12.99) for audio out to my Turtle Beach X3 headphones. If all you need is analog out, this universal cable is the way to go, since the 360 plug is thin enough to slide in beside the hdmi without having to cut on your Microsoft cable. They have another model which I believe is 14.99 that has component and optical outs.
jumboshrimp1837 03-11-09, 11:19 AM I have my 360 connected directly to my router, sometimes it logs on immediatly others I have to run throught the troubleshooting to connect to Xbox Live. Have you heard of this issue before?
cesslinger 03-11-09, 01:47 PM Your router is resetting the dhcp client when that happens. It happened to me also until I created a static ip for the xbox.
Jamie75 03-11-09, 01:58 PM I was wodering if you guys could help me. My XBOX will play anything but game discs. For aa while I was getting unreadable disc errors and couldn't get through games. Now I've had my 360 for 3 years I want to say. It hasn't red ringed thoug it might be coming who knows.
Now I wanted to get a new xbox because of the HDMI port. My question is would I be losing out on anything by going with the arcade version and just using my HD on it? Other than the chrome disc tray lol, I have all the accesories I need. Is there any hardware gimping going on with the Arcade verison?
^no. depending on when you get a new system you may be lucky and get the latest mo/bo rev. that includes 256mb (or was it 512?) on board memory. i know the red edition resident evil 5 branded 360's should include this update. any other version will be dependant on their manufacturer date.
so in your situation you are gaining automatically cause you're getting HDMI off the bat. the hardware does get revised, but never downgraded, unlike the ps3 (thwarted ps2 playback).
synnyster 03-14-09, 09:27 PM Just bought a new 360 60GB to replace my RRoD 360 20GB. I have it hooked up via HDMI to my Onkyo 606 which then feeds to my LG 52" LCD. This has been a common (360 handshake) issue, do a seach "360 Dolby Digital". Appears the options are to go into the 360 settings and toggle the "Digital Output" setting back and forth from Stereo to Dolby Digital. Or run the hdmi from the 360 to the tv and send the optical to your reciever.

I had a similar problem with my Denon 2808. What I found out was you have to "tell" the amp that the input from the 360 is DD otherwise it will just default to PL II. The book you received with your Onkyo should explain how to do this.

Mandrew Hammer 03-27-09, 07:20 PM Hi,
I have my xbox 360 hooked up to a samsung T240HD 1080p via VGA cable (I have an HDMI cable but for some reason the picture quality is MUCH better with the VGA than it is with the HDMI), and for some reason, when I try to set my monitor to 1920x1080 resolution, a whole bunch of the screen gets cut off and although the system has the resolution set to 1920x1080, my monitor resolution is set to 1680x1050. So I set the resolution to 1680x1050 and it looks great, however now whenever I turn my system off and turn it back on, or whenever I switch input sources and go back to VGA mode, the monitor auto-adjusts, and instead of having the black bars on the top and bottom, I get 2 black bars on the bottom. I am able to correct this by going into my TV menu via my remote and resetting the picture image, but now every time I turn on my 360 or select VGA for my input mode, the monitor auto adjusts and I keep having to reset the picture via my remote. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Well thanks for all of the help folks. I found that if I turn on my Xbox 360 last that the problem goes away so...
I have an issue that just started. I put a game into the 360 and it ask me to start dvd. It does not go to the game. I switched 5 different games and every time, the 360 asks me if I want to start the dvd. I start dvd and it says insert dvd disc.
Please advise me as to my best options.
Yesterday, the 360 cut off a/v output and flashed TWO rings which indicates overheating. The fan had been roaring prior to that. It was not in an enclosed cabinet and this never happened before. This morning, it still will not output anything, exhibiting the same behavior. So I assume it's toast.
This is an Elite System bought from costco.com. My purchase/order date must have been 3/27/08 because the 'my xbox' page lists at "out of standard warranty" with a 3/27/08. Looking into my credit card charge, it was charged 4/3/08.
I know I could return it to costco. I'm not sure if they have in the warehouses though. Noob question, can I swap hard drives into the new unit and return it or something along those lines. Thanks for any advice.
Edit: Microsoft seems to be willing to honor the 4/3/08 credit card billing date for the warranty (not the date I placed the order). That's good. I'm just not sure if I want to go that route due to the wait.
I ordered another Elite Sytem from costco.com. They're still not carried at the warehouse unfortunately and since I'm addicted to COD WAW, my wife was nice enough to go to pick up a 'Pro' system they carry at the warehouse. When the new Elite system comes we'll return the Pro and the defective Elite. It's actually over $110 cheaper than last year. :)

I can't think of a retailer that wouldn't take one back after a week in working condition. As for their generous lifetime policy, it's why I decided to give them a BIG chunk of money for an Elite System instead of other retailers. It's also why I would do so again and recommend them to others.

I thought they changed the return policy on electronics to be 90 days because people were buying stuff like TVs and digital cameras then returning them the following year to buy the new model.

I believe Costco changed their return policy back in 2007. If the item are purchased before the change, your purchase applies to the old policy(grandfather clause). You can return it for a full refund.
"Merchandise: We guarantee your satisfaction on every product we sell with a full refund. Exceptions: Televisions, projectors, computers, cameras, camcorders, iPOD / MP3 players and cellular phones must be returned within 90 days of purchase for a refund."

This is correct and game consoles are not counted as computers. They are not excluded.
whityfrd 04-03-09, 01:00 PM hey guys. just wanted to throw this out there and maybe someone can help. i recently purchased a new console with hdmi and am having problems with faint vertical lines all across my screen. you cant see it during gameplay but in menus and on the dashboard you can barely see vertical lines running across the whole screen. i am using my own hdmi cable and not using the dongle for hdmi with optical use. i did the old pop the plastic off the av plug and slide both in. im kinda suspecting that its the fit of the av and hdmi cables as its really tight without the dongle and they may be pushing up against eachother and causing this problem. i know its not electrical in my house, ive tried switching outlets and also hooked up the console through a power conditioner. any help appreciated.
IceMaN30 04-05-09, 04:29 PM Well i'm back and now have another hdmi problem. Now the system won't fully start when it is connected through hdmi. As soon as i remove it and put in the component cables it finishes the boot up process. I've tried changing the output resolutions and tested the cable on my ps3 and works fine. Anyone run into this problem before? Is my hdmi port dead?
Thanks,
James
fbi nos1 04-06-09, 01:02 AM my xbox 360 isn't giving me any picture.
i'm using the analog AV system.
my problem started with the screen flooding with green and red.
i switched tv ports and got no image.
i tried switching back but still nothing.
im using the cable that came with the xbox and haven't gotten a red ring either.
plus it's out of warrentu now so if i can get it fixed for a little money as possible that would be nice.
FWIW, Costco gave us 0 problems with the return(s) today. (1 Elite from costco.com 4.3.08 and 1 Pro from the warehouse 4.3.09) ..Had to give back Halo 3 which came in last year's bundle but oh well.
jumboshrimp1837 04-08-09, 08:13 AM hey guys. just wanted to throw this out there and maybe someone can help. i recently purchased a new console with hdmi and am having problems with faint vertical lines all across my screen. you cant see it during gameplay but in menus and on the dashboard you can barely see vertical lines running across the whole screen. i am using my own hdmi cable and not using the dongle for hdmi with optical use. i did the old pop the plastic off the av plug and slide both in. im kinda suspecting that its the fit of the av and hdmi cables as its really tight without the dongle and they may be pushing up against eachother and causing this problem. i know its not electrical in my house, ive tried switching outlets and also hooked up the console through a power conditioner. any help appreciated.
I have had the same issue with the little red horizontal bars. My Elite is hooked up to my Yamaha rcvr via hdmi which passes through to my Sony Xbr. I've tried hooking up directly to the tv but still get the bars (minus surround). I'm there with you bro, don't know why its happening... My Elite is a first gen by the way. Yours?

well i fixed the problem. i went through a checklist of things to change in the console settings one by one to see if it made a difference. and wouldnt you know it the first thing i changed made the difference. i changed the resolution to 720p as opposed to 1080i. i had 1080i because my plasma is 768p and is better at downscaling than upconverting. but anyways this worked like a charm and all i had to do was recalibrate and that was the end of that. hope this helps anyone with a similar problem. also make sure you are not forcing upconversion with your av reciever.

Microsoft admits Xbox hardware problems
Console of doom
By Nick Farrell
Wednesday, 15 April 2009, 13:13
MICROSOFT has finally admitted that there is a problem with the hardware on its Xbox 360 console which causes it to crash and show a multi-language kill screen.
The E74 failure is getting so bad that Microsoft has amended its three-year warranty to cover the problem.
Complaints of the error increased after the release of the New Xbox Experience, or NXE.
It occurred after anywhere from 12 to 36 months of use, with many claiming that trouble arose on consoles that have already been repaired following a Red Ring of Death failure.
The problem was that this issue wasn't covered by Microsoft's warranty because, according to Microsoft, it was a "general hardware failure".
Microsoft has said that, after investigating the issue, it has determined that the E74 error message can indicate the general hardware failure that is associated with three flashing red lights error on the console.
"As a result, we have decided to cover repairs related to the E74 error message under our three-year warranty program for certain general hardware failures that was announced in July 2007."
Microsoft also claims it has made the necessary changes to decrease the likelihood of the error, and will refund the cost of E74 repairs to customers who may have already paid to have their console fixed or replaced.

PhooNami 04-16-09, 08:06 PM I have a 1080p capable tv (Samsung LN46A850) hooked up with my X-box 360 via component cables, but it seems like using the 1080i settings on the Xbox produces a cleaner noise free picture. If I force it on 1080p it produces some ghosting and slight haziness on the picture.I'm also using a better cable than the one supplied with the console.Anyone else experiencing this? maybe 1080p setting on an Elite with HDMI would be better? Thanks for any inputs!

Have you tried 720p? My honest opinion is that for gaming HDMI doesn't really have much if any advantage, other than the simplicity. You may also want to try VGA, some people prefer it above everything else, one big advantage it does have is you will never get any overscan....
PhooNami 04-16-09, 11:07 PM Hmm..I'll look into that.Thanks!
Hey everyone. Yesterday I was playing RE5, and I noticed what seemed like a loss in resolution. Or a loss in colours. It was a sudden thing, and the colours all seemed to get blocky. For example, the clouds were only two colours. This was after about 30 minutes of use.
I shut it off, and tried it about an hour later, and it worked fine for about 10 minutes, and then did it again.
Now when I turn it on, I am getting a HDMI not supported. I am running from the xbox to a Monoprice switch to an Epson 1080UB. I have taken the switch out of the equation, and get the same error, intermittently. Sometime I can get a picture, sometimes I get HDMI not supported.
Here's some more detail. Ran a shorter HDMI cable direct to the projector and got the same not supported message. Moved it down to the TV and tried it with HDMI and got not supported. Plugged it in with component cables and I just get a black screen. It is booting, because I can hear it, just no picture.
Is this the GPU on the way out or something else? It is a Pro version (Falcon) bought January 2008.
Thanks,
Tyler
BUMP I am also having this problem ^^^^^
Although mine is nearly 3 years old and using component but the traits are the same. Loss of resolution, clouding and signal not supported.
I have a Arcade Jasper for 4 months or so now. This morning, I bought Halo wars. After 2 hours of playing, Xbox put a ring around the brand new disk near the outer edge.
Did I do something wrong or my xbox is having hardware issue? If this is hardware issue, what can I do to get it fix?
Thanks in advance
Claudius 04-28-09, 05:43 PM General repair question
My Xbox just red ringed and is OUT OF WARRANTY apparently, according to the Xbox support page.
I requested a repair order online and the total came to $0.00 (I picked 3 red rings as the problem). Then it told me to print the shipping label and send them the box.
My question is, are they going to charge me for this repair? I'm confused, since my warranty has expired

Longtime reader here and my first post.
I usually can figure out home theater issues, but this XBox problem has me baffled.
I had been using component cables from my XBox 360 to my Sharp LCD but encountered a display "reset" every few minutes that lasted for about 3 seconds each time. I did some research and found that a HDMI cable should solve this.
Got the cable with the audio dongle in today and promptly replaced it. I have Astro headphones that plug into a mixamp with Dolby Digital via an optical cable. So I ran the HDMI to the back of my TV, used the dongle and plugged my optical cable into that and then the other end into the mixamp which my headphones plug into.
When I turned on the Xbox and popped on my headphones I had no sound - EXCEPT for chat voices (I was playing an online multiplayer game). I heard and could speak over voice chat but had absolutely no game sound. I turned off my Xbox and then back on and now have no sound at all.
Now, after some reading I've seen that there used to be a bug with the new Xbox dashboard but I thought I read that it was fixed. Any ideas? Any settings I'm missing in my Xbox? Very frustrating, to say the least.
Thanks for any help.

No they are not going to charge you.
You probably;y know this because your Xbox is back already.
Like buying a prom dress and returning after wearing. :rolleyes:regardless if you think so or not, you increase the cost of goods for everyone and it is unethical to buy something, use it, knowing very well you are going to return it.
gungadin25 05-07-09, 06:53 PM I don't know what to do. I have a Xbox 360 HDMI and a Panasonic 42PWD7UY. I've been experiencing vertical banding with the Xbox 360 when using a HDMI to DVI cable. I thought it was a TV issue and had it serviced today, but the TV repairwoman and I narrowed it down to the Xbox. So we changed to component, but then there were diagonal lines that ran from upper right to lower left intermittently. She said that was normal for the TV, but it was very pronounced at times.
Does the Xbox 360 support HDMI to DVI? I read somewhere it doesn't, but no one else seems to have problems. Should I upgrade my TV to HDMI by purchasing the HDMI blade? Should I just live with the diagonal lines in component and use a digital audio cable? Should I swap out the Xbox and get another one? (I might still have some time on the warranty...)
There are so many potential approaches - just want to take the one that makes the most sense...

I swapped out the Xbox today. The vertical banding is still there for DVI, but the diagonal thingys aren't there for component. Plus I get a 60 GB drive now. Guess it was worth the $40 extended warranty!

Make sure your XBOX is the last thing turned on otherwise it defaults to 2 channel Dolby Pro Logic. Also check your settings on the Onkyo.

Whatever dude. My return of a 2 day old XBox in perfect working conditon will not raise the price of your next system. In fact like I said it's like $150 cheaper this year so go figure.
I pay $100 for my Costco Executive Membership and it's their policy, not mine. I wish they carried the Elite's in the warehouse but they don't. I heard of people who cancelled thier memberships with a month left and get their membership refunded in full. Then they buy a new membership a week later. Is that ethical? I shouldn't have posted that anyway. It's nobody else's business. I'll admit that it's not completely ethical but who's completely ethical? It's not stealing. Like I said, it's not just a Costco thing anyway. BB or anyone would have taken it back too.
Thanks for your comments.

fireantz 05-10-09, 11:39 AM I'm having a problem where I have to shut off my A/V receiver for anything wireless to connect to the xbox (Controllers, Rockband 2 instruments). It just sits and searches until you shut the receiver off and it works fine once connected. I have a Pioneer 1018 receiver, regular XBOX and a sony XBR TV all hooked up through HDMI.
Hi,
I just received a replacement xbox unit due to RROD failure. Last night I noticed by accident that when volume is very high on my receiver I can ear a pretty loud hiss coming from all speakers in a 5.1 DD setup. As soon as I turn on the xbox and the logo appears I ear the hiss at high volumes. If I set the 360 to 2 ch the hiss completly disapears. Any ideas?
I'm connected via optical to my Kenwood VR3100 receiver...
rpoulos 05-25-09, 11:39 PM My 2nd elite (1st one RRODed) just started displaying a purple color overlay and upon rebooting won't display any picture at all. Of course it's out of warranty now.
This is actually my 4th 360 (the 1st two needed replacement, 1 due to RROD and the other due to a weird graphics failure).
I have actually decided not to repair it, sell it as is and go the PS3 route... I can't believe it but I've just had it with this piece of junk.
Gabinxs 05-27-09, 07:29 AM Hi! I'm going nuts trying to find what the h*ll happened to my xbox360...
It's an arcade version, Jasper model, brand new (almost 2 months old).
I'm using the original component cable from Microsoft, and I'm using it's optical output. I don't have a hard drive.
Everything was going ok, until 2 days ago...
All of a sudden, no more sound output.
So far, I've tested another original component cable, and the problem persists.
I've tested the optical cable with a dvd player and a ps2 and it works fine.
The home theater only has one optical input (tested with the same optical cable and the dvd player and ps2) and it works ok.
The console settings are ok (digital output activated).
I've only get audio with the red and white rca plugs (stereo).
I've read about the problems with the new dashboard (no audio over hdmi) and thought that this could be the same, but the dashboard version I have is newer than the problematic one, AND I've installed it a month ago and the problem started 2 days from today.
The console maintains a pretty low temperature (just some warm air coming from the coolers). I'm not using it on vertical position.
I've never player more than 2 o 3 hours in a row. There's days when I don't even use it at all.
The only thing I've found online is that the few people who had this problem couldn't find a solution or an answer or at least a clue of what was happening...
The last thing I'm gonna test is another optical cable - wich I don't think it'll work, since the one I have works in any other equipment I have...
Clues? Ideas? Thougths? Tips? I'm all ears (eyes)! Thanks!

borgdaddy 06-01-09, 12:59 PM Xbox 360 Ethernet port is dead
Hi all, my network router go zapped and zapped everything attached to it including my Xbox 360 ethernet port. Any way to fix it? Anyone tried a wired USB ethernet adapter? Why is e74 covered for three years, but e73 isn't?
bigscreenbob 06-26-09, 01:17 AM I just got a second 360 and moved my older unit to the spare room.
My power supply/brick was placed in a confined space till I heard the wirr of a cooling fan. I noticed it was hot and moved it to an open area rite away.
It is now at a normal(fairly warm to the touch) temperature but the fan still runs but at a less obvious pace than earlier. You almost have to feel the air coming out the ends with your hand to tell the fans working, it is almost too quiet to here it.
In the living room where it used to be I never noticed that the power brick even had a fan, it was in a more open area since day 1.
My question is, do the fan/fans on these power bricks run continually as long as there is power going to it? Or is it just when they heat up?
This is an older 203 watt model if that matters. I just want to know if my brick is acting normal or not.
I haven't had a chance with my newer unit with the 175 watt brick to play with it yet, wifes been hogging the Telly lately in the living room.
Thanx in advance.
ExMachina 07-09-09, 08:37 PM Question about 360 controllers - is there a way to easily reassign different wired controllers to different slots while in-game? I've tried disconnecting the 1p controller and plugging in a different one, but it defaults to 2p even if there is no controller hooked up to the 1p slot.
I'm hoping to get some help figuring this out! Right now I have my xbox connected to a 42 inch Philips 1080p LCD via component cables. The screen resolution/clarity looks really off, like the refresh rate is too high, too crisp, and it's adding like a white outline and major jaggies to things.
I have my PC hooked to my tv via a DVI to HDMI adapter. Sometimes when I select the output for the PC it'll have the same looking screen, but if I bring the tv menu up and then back out of it, somehow the tv does an automatic adjustment that makes the screen look nice.
So I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong with my xbox. I have the HD switch selected and 1080p settings selected in the console settings. I've tried 1080i and 720 but they look the same. Should I try connecting the xbox to my PC monitor via another HDMI to DVI adapter? Since I have my monitor also running through my LCD, maybe that will solve my issue? I also have an extra HDMI cable and I tried hooking my xbox up using that and even that looks the same. I'm stuck. Any ideas would be really appreciated! Thanks.
Bossjon 08-05-09, 12:05 PM I have been experiencing this problem for a couple of days now. While playing COD world at war, My screen will just freeze and there appears to be some pixelation in the frozen screen. The system is unresponsive and I have to restart to get any movement from the system. I thought it might be a problem with the VGA, so I switched to component, but it is happening with that also. Could this be a Disk drive problem or could it be an issue with the game?
craig_wagner 08-05-09, 07:19 PM While playing COD world at war, My screen will just freeze and there appears to be some pixelation in the frozen screen.
When I've seen that happen it's been followed very shortly thereafter by three red lights. I'm on my third 360 now (two dead and counting).
either that or you could be getting ready to get an E76 error. i had the same exact problem you described. E76 are warranty repairs, but you will be out a system for a little while
FWIW,
My Falcon (purchased 8/08) went from graphical glitches to E74 error in about five days two weeks back. I shipped it back last Tuesday and it returned a week later. So, quick turnaround from MS. Then again, the repair center is in Mesquite TX and I live in Austin.
bdwright77 08-10-09, 09:43 AM Hey guys...I picked up a Jasper Arcade back in November of 08. Recently, when I first turn it on with a disc in the tray, or when I load a disc into the drive, my 360 makes a strange sound as it begins to read the disc. It didn't always do this. The discs seems to read fine, and I haven't noticed any scratching, but I was seeing if anyone else has a similar issue.
Thanks!
Xbox 360 Failure Rate is 54.2 Percent, Game Informer Finds
By Phil Villarreal, 9:00 AM on Mon Aug 17 2009,
The Xbox 360 breaks five times as often as often as its closest failure-prone competitor, the PlayStation 3, a print edition-only Game Informer survey found.
The poorly manufactured, red ring of death-prone console has a 54.2 percent failure rate, compared to 10.6 percent for the PS3 and the Wii's 6.8 percent.
The magazine surveyed nearly 5,000 readers to get the data. And while the 360's rate is alarmingly higher than the others, it's still bafflingly low because it blows the mind to imagine that 45.8 percent of the consoles have not broken. Also, Microsoft's numbers are inflated because 360s are used the most of the three consoles. Results said 40.3 percent of 360 owners use the console three to five hours a day, compared to 37 percent of PS3 owners. Meanwhile, the plurality of Wii owners (41.4 percent) play their consoles less than an hour a day.
Microsoft also seized the gold medal for unhelpful customer service, taking nearly a month to repair or replace a console, while Nintendo and Sony stuck closer to a week. Only 37.7 percent of Microsoft customers found the company's customer service was "very helpful," compared to 51.1 percent fo Sony and 56.1 percent for Nintendo.
The most shocking number from the survey — and frightening from a consumer perspective — is only 3.8 percent of Xbox 360 owners said they'd never buy another Xbox because of hardware failure.

munkyxtc 08-17-09, 02:22 PM I'd buy another xbox and I've had 2 that have had issues. But on the same token, I've had 1 PS3 go down w/ a bad BR drive after 3 months. Of course Sony & MS both fixed the issues free of charge; so why would I not buy either again? Both companies stood behind their product when they had issues on my end, to me thats the most important note.

You've heard right on both counts; however, let me clarify those points so you don't go out and buy something you won't need.
Q) Is a Wireless N router compatible with both machines?
A) Yes, an 'N' Router is compatible with your Xbox and/or PS3 Hardware.
Q) Right now I have a G router but I keep hearing that the N routers are faster
A) That's correct, 'N' as a standard is much faster than the B & G standards; however, and this is the important part...Both the Xbox 360 and PS3 will be able to connect and work through a wireless 'N' router but neither will take advantage of the increase in throughput; the wireless adapters for both systems can only connect to a B or G connection; therefore, your router will (depending on model) either automatically adjust for this, or require additional configuration for wireless b/g mixed.
At the end of the day, if you have a router that is working, I would not replace it for 2 main reasons:
1) None of the current generation consoles will be able to take advantage of the features.
2) Wireless 'N' as a standard is not finalized, meaning it's still a work in progress. Major changes could still occur which could cause your 'new' router to become obsolete once the standard is finalized if they did not allow a way for flash upgrades. While the changes are slim of this occuring, it is the potential price you pay for being an early adopter.
Summary: Yes, N is faster, and will work; however, you will not gain anything by using it. The best solution if at all possible is to be wired, short of that use a b/g mixed mode.
craig_wagner 08-18-09, 03:57 PM The best solution if at all possible is to be wired...
+1
If you really want a network speed improvement, forget about wireless and go with a wired solution.

Try disabling the auto sign in feature; then create a new (silver) account and set it to automatically sign in; restart the xbox and confirm that the new account automatically signed in. Then Disable auto sign in on that account and reenable the primary account auto sign in. Restart and see what happens.
I've had issues in the past with a couple of accounts and this did the trick for me.

I can't confirm for this specific model; but from what I've been able to find is that Panasonic does not allow 1080p over component or VGA in 'most' of their modern plasma sets. All signs point this this behavior being as intended; as Panasonic expects all signals worth displaying in 1080p using HDMI.
I'm by no means an expert on Panasonic TV's and can only provide information posted by others who share a similar frustration. On that note, I'd check w/ the manufacturer, you can get a hold of their customer service @ 800-211-7262
Stryker412 08-21-09, 02:08 PM Try disabling the auto sign in feature; then create a new (silver) account and set it to automatically sign in; restart the xbox and confirm that the new account automatically signed in. Then Disable auto sign in on that account and reenable the primary account auto sign in. Restart and see what happens.
I've had issues in the past with a couple of accounts and this did the trick for me.
No luck.
munkyxtc 08-22-09, 05:19 PM No luck.
Did the newly create account at least sign in automatically? Might point us in the right direction...
Sundull 08-27-09, 08:37 PM I posted this in another thread, but I'll add it here, too:
I can't get 5.1 surround sound from the 360 using HDMI, so I decided to use the optical output from the component A/V cable and the HDMI output at the same time. Both go to the receiver (Onkyo TX-SR805). Now, I have set up the receiver (at least I think I have) to use the HDMI input for just video and the optical input for audio. However, I am getting no sound at all now. Does anybody know what I'm doing wrong?
EDIT: I figured it out. There is an option in the receiver setup menu under "Hardware Setup" where HDMI Audio Output was set to "On." I set it to Off and now the receiver shows Dolby Digital.
How can I induce the rrod? I have an elite that has no video or audio.
formulanerd 08-28-09, 11:29 PM seems to have fixed itsself :D

Try wrapping it in a towel to overheat it?
*Not responsible for anything that may or may not happen with this method, but some have had success.
Does anyone know of a good link for repairing the no video or audio on xbox 360?

See answer to your same question on "Three Red Rings" thread.
Analyzer52 09-12-09, 03:33 AM Hi Everyone..

BobbieBerto 09-25-09, 05:47 PM Hey hope this is in the right place, i just got a samsung le40b530 and have my xbox hooked up through hdmi and have been going mad trying to get a decent picture im happy with, lots of jaggies. but then im playing far cry 2 and see some pretty noticable pixelated shadows everywhere so i change to 1080i and 720p to see any difference and no sign of shadow problem at all, can any one offer any reasons or solutions to this? im fairly new to the hd world so not sure if this is common or its a bad tv or im just nitpicking! thanks
crazy_johny 10-09-09, 11:28 AM Good morning.
I have my xbox 360 connected to my reciever via HDMI cable, and my reciever connected to my TV via HDMI.
The xbox 360 dashboard comes up clean and the receiver registers it as a Dolby Digital signal, and the video source is properly up converted.
However, the PROBLEM comes when I attempt to : play dvd's, play non HD trailer videos.... etc. The reciever turns on to stereo mode, the video shows black bars on either side of the picture, and the video quality drops significantly. In some cases, the audio won't even come through. ...
When played using red, white, yellow, no symptoms. Any thoughts?> (speed in the answers would be great, I have a movie date tonight that I would rather not have to worry about electronics in!)

one version of the cable wont do 60->120, but 20->60 is no problem.
champer 10-13-09, 04:26 PM what disc format are the 360 games ? are they HD dvds ?
spyder696969 10-13-09, 11:28 PM what disc format are the 360 games ? are they HD dvds ?
No, DVDs.
champer 10-14-09, 12:40 AM No, DVDs. just a regular dvd - or + disc ? cause ps2 games were dvds. i figured for the 360 games to support 1080p and the game info taking up alot of space from the graphics being so high i would have thought that it would have to be a different disc format to hold that much memory.

I doubt you'll be able to find the plastic lock-tab anywhere individually. FYI, Play & Charge kits can be bought for $13 or less quite often (if you would have posted yesterday, I would have referred you here: http://slickdeals.net/permadeal/25435) although if you're going to need it quick and can't wait for a sale, newegg is fantastic. If you can wait, just use one of the best resources known to man until then...duct tape.

Really? That seems odd. Normally that only happens if you get caught cheating.
I have a 2 day old Xbox 360 Elite that I bought for my son, and signed him up for the 1 month free trial of Xbox Live that came with the console. Last night while he was playing a game it froze and he powered the unit off. When he powered it back on, the console no longer recognized the hard drive and he was being prompted to create a new account for Xbox live. Does anyone know why the console is not recognizing the hard drive?
Thanks

If that is why, it is a mistake. My 360 has only been online twice since launch. I don't have a high speed connection in my area. So I've only hooked it up twice, once to download a few arcade titles and just recently to get this update.

Are you saying that the console doesn't recognize the hard drive at all or just his account?
I think my unit is getting noisy because the fan blades are accumulating dirt. Has anyone taken this unit apart and cleaned the fan blades?
shahram72 10-25-09, 12:27 PM I have a refurbed unit from MS that returned from RROD less than a year ago. I still have warranty through Thanksgiving. It has been giving me disc read errors randomly on several games, notably Gears 2 during multiplayer and on LEGO Batman quite frequently as well as other games. Also, I got a lower right red light a couple days ago that a reboot solved. It's working fine now but it's only a matter of time before I get another disc read error. Any ideas on this? Great thread but when they're this big you just can't read it all. I don't see how I can request repair on a working console but I'm sure it will die just after the warranty next month. Thanks for the help. BTW, it's a Xenon.
Are you saying that the console doesn't recognize the hard drive at all or just his account?
It doesn't recognize the hard drive at all, as though one is not attached to the unit. We have tried taking the hd off and putting it back on, but to no avail.
