If that is why, it is a mistake. My 360 has only been online twice since launch. I don't have a high speed connection in my area. So I've only hooked it up twice, once to download a few arcade titles and just recently to get this update.

So you are in the preview program then? If that is the case I would post in the provided forums for the preview program and xbox.com.

I think my unit is getting noisy because the fan blades are accumulating dirt. Has anyone taken this (sic?)unit apart and cleaned the fan blades?

Well, I've never taken "that" ;) unit apart personally, but if you meant "their" and not "this," then I've cleaned my fans dozens of times. If you don't want to void your warranty, then just use a can of compressed air.

I have some weird issues over here too. I'll list my setup first off. I have a premium 360 hooked up to my 51' Sony RP CRT, and I have optical out going to my yamaha reciever. So far I have had quite a few freezes, most involving opening the side menu while in game (I am guessing this is software related). But I have also had alot of audio glitches, my sound will randomly cut out for just a second and I'm not too sure why...and when I play halo2 (emulated) for some reason when I am in a heavy gunfight, the sound will cut in and out :( I've also had some lag issues in Perfect Dark Zero (mission 5? I think, the one where you're escaping from the hideout in China or whatever) while playing co-op (splitscreen) with a friend, we got to the part where you blow up the wall and head outside for the hovercrafts, well, when I rushed out there (guys shooting me from every direction) my 360 starting lagging really badly, I'm not too sure why but I'm pretty concerned about this... I also had it freeze up once in single player mission (was only on for 20 mins max) I am thinking it is just this game, but I am not entirely sure.
Anyways, I am wondering if anyone else with digital output and HDTV (1080i) connection have had any of these problems? mainly the lagging problem in PDZ, but also the sound problems in Halo2.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I have had the same problem using a marantz receiver with the optical output on the xbox 360. I switched to an hdmi cable for both audio and visual input and the audio glitches went away. I wonder if there is a problem with the optical output on certain models. I have the elite model with one of the cooler running chips. I honestly would buy the regular version given the chance again. I don't think it was worth the extra cash.

For those with the Purple tint issue whenever watching videos on the 360, I solved this problem by switching the color space to RGB.[@Optimal Resolution: 1080P HDMI + A and Expanded Reference Level] Doing this with my Optoma HD20. Just incase anyone else has this problem.

Also with the Auto, Source or any of the other options offered in the color space, simply disconnecting the HDMI cable and re-plugging it in will fix the video issue. (But when you go back to Xbox dashboard, it will be a greenish tint, sigh haha) I wouldn't suggest this though as disconnecting cables when things are not off is not a good thing.

Hi. Not sure if this is the best thread, but I've recently set up an 'N' wifi network through the house, with all my toys hooked up to a bridge.

Now, PS3 streams HD fine, but the Xbox stutters like crazy. I've read there's a buddering problem with the 360 and HD vids. Can anyone confirm this, or is this just a nasty rumour and I need to play around a little more?

Thanks in advance.

So i am having some trouble calibrating a 360 using DVE. For the first calibration, the brightness, even with brightness and contrast turned to 100 I can't see any bars. My 360 is hooked up to a Panasonic 46 inch g10 via HDMI outputting 1080p. Now trying to solve the problem I hunted the picture menu and changed black levels from Dark to Light and suddenly I could see the bars and could adjust brightness properly, but now the blacks in dark scenes look like a bad VHS, incredibly grainy and when I looked closer up the pixels were shifting between red, green, black.

It almost seems the 360 is severely limiting the contrast which seems unlikely. I should add that changing brightness from 0-100 seemed to make very little difference. All this though, but on default settings for Custom the picture looks pretty darn good. I'm stumped so could anyone more knowledgeable help out?

I'm starting to get a very weird problem with the video outputing some snowy picture in certain parts. On the dashboard, all is normal except on my avatar which has some snowiness on the feet and head area of the avatar (weird I know). And when I start up Modern Warfare 2, everything is normal, the menus and everything except when I'm actually playing in a match, thats when everything gets snowy again. Additionally, when I stream 4:3 videos from my computer, the side are snowy but the video itself plays fine. I usually set my TV to wide to hide it.

Can anyone help me explain this? I also got the E74 message a couple times when I restarted the Xbox

It's the beginning of the end for your console. Next will come freezing, graphics failure, or permanent E74. Send it in for RRoD repair right away. Do not concern yourself that it isn't currently showing the one red light, as MS should fix it based solely on your claim that it has previously failed.

Post this in the elite thread, but this thread may be more appropriate.

My son's Elite has been acting funny lately. When playing Modern Warfare 2 on-line, he's getting weird pixelation artifacts. Mostly on the buildings and backgrounds. Is the GPU going in the 360 or what? The internet connection is wired, so I don't think it's a bandwidth issue.

Also, he claims it only happens in Modern Warfare and another COD game. Madden 10 and Halo 3 are just fine. Being a software guy I blamed the HW, but could it really be a COD issue? Doesn't seem possible because this was working for him for many hours before this.

Any ideas?

Hello,

I was just about to have my external HD re formatetd to Fat 32 so it could work with my DVD player and PS3.

Mrs. Claus just told me she picked up and X Box Elite.
Can this device read a HD drive formatted with NTSC or do I have to have it re formatted to support Fat 32?

THank you,
Mr. panda

Just closing the loop on this. Today he turned on the xbox and sure enough...E74 pops up on the screen.

I went through the claim process and my xbox is out of warranty (it must just be over a year). However, it said that the E74 was covered.

I have a Vizio 47" HDMI connection

Hope someone here can help me out. My tv had 4 HDMI slots, my Cable is in HDMI1, 360 is in HDMI 2...the problem is sometimes while playing a game the sound just stops and I have to switch through all the HDMI 3,4,1 and back to 2 for the sound to return. Today I was watching a movie thats on my computer and the sound was going out quite a bit. I even changed HDMI cords and even hooked the 360 up to HDMI 3 and it still happened. Any ideas whats going on? anything I can do?

Just to clarify;

When you say, "my cable is in HDMI1" do you mean your cable TV is in HDMI1?

When you say, "I was watching a movie that's on my computer" are you implying that your computer's sound is connected into the Vizio, or are you stating that the 360 was connected to your computer monitor?

One meaning indicates a problem with the 360, while the other would lead to the TV being the problem. After doing a quick Google check, it seems that there are others that have had issues with Vizios and HDMI dropping out. (Fortunately, for me, I'm not one of them.) Have you tried using the component outputs for the 360 to see if you could replicate the issue?

Just bought a second system 360 for system link play but having some network issues. Plugged both into my router and tried GOW2 and Borderlands. With both games i could create a system link game and the other system would see the other system and player id. Unfortunately, when i would go to start the game i would get a " Host disconnect error."

Just to isolate the problem i grabbed a rj45 cable and connected both systems to each other and it worked right away.

Now I know it is a router issue, any ideas?

Hey Guys,

Up until today I have had no issues with my wireless connection(except that I am currently stuck with a wireless connection.) Today I tried to play MW 2 and could not get a good connection. Went to my network settings and that showed full bars, but when I join a game I only get one bar. Not sure if this is a glitch experienced with xbox live or what.

If anyone else is having these issues or have heard anything on them please let me know.

Thanks

You "red bar count" has more to do with who you're playing with and their equipment then your actual physical connection itself. For example, you might have fantastic DL/UL speeds, but if you're playing with someone that has dial-up or bucketloads of ingress, your RBC will drop dramatically. It's a common thing for everyone across Live. Some games/servers are better at overcoming these issues than others.

Got the E 74 error message last night right in the middle of a MW2 match. This will be the second xbox I've had to send in.

My old 360 - refurb from the RROD - has now got the dreaded problem of now longer being able to read disks. I am seeing a rash of these on the the xbox 360 message boards after playing MW2 and doing the latest update. Anyone else having their drive crap out lately? It had been perfect and all of a sudden - poof - no more recognizing games in the drive...

Typically, when a laser goes out, it pretty much just dies. There aren't many warning signs. That said, it's not really what I'd call a "dreaded problem." You can get a new laser on eBay for < $10 and both the removal and install are quite simple. I can't imagine what MW2 would have to do with one conking out.

Note: You will need a soldering iron to remove the anti-static point from the new laser. Some sellers will remove this for you if you ask, some won't. A < $10 "Rat Shack" 15W or 30W iron works fine.

Do I have an Xbox 360 problem?

Playing a game yesterday and noticed a sudden red tint on my screen, on different parts, like a wave.

Later on, I got no video but heard audio. I thought it might have been my HDTV. It was connected via HDMI cable.

I went ahead and tried a component cable from Xbox 360 to the HDTV, was able to see / hear a game. Later on, I cannot see it but can hear it.

Your Xbox is going to die soon.
Trade it in while it still boots up and get an Arcade unit or send for the coffin.

Hi,

We just got Beatles Rockband and each time we put the game into the XBOX360, it loads and comes up as "play dvd" rather than playing the game. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Does this happen only on the Rockband game, or on other games as well?

Also, when you say, "We just got the game," do you mean you got it new or used?

OK whenever I am am playing COD MW2, my connection is ALWAYS 2-3 Bars.. I don't notice any major lag however it would be nice to have a better connection.

Steps that i have done for process of elimination
1. New Modem from Internet Provider
2. Power Cycled both my router and modem
3. Reset both router and modem
(a) Router: Buffalo Technology Buffalo AirStation WHR-HP-G54
(b) Security on Router: AES, on low.
(c) Running Cat-6 Cable 3ft in length to my Router which has a Cat-6 cable a ft long to my modem. (From there it splits http://www.roadrunnerguide.com/splitter.jpg to my tv and wall maybe a 20 ft length) and that is it.
3. Upgraded my internet to Turbo Speed (download speed was like 15mbps, upload 1.5 mbps) (after upgrading I was still only getting 2-3 connection bars)
4. That didn't work...had a technician from the internet provider who looked at /tested everything and couldnt find an issue.
5. Went into the ports and opened up UDP/TCP 3074, 80, 88, 53, 3075, 3568 and I want to say 2XXX and I thought 50 (the last 2 I can't recall for sure.)

Maybe could me others in my area and I just have to learn to live with it?

Thank you all for your help.

Unless you can wire up a direct line of miles and miles of cable to everyone that you're playing with online, and all of their settings are correct, and all of their equipment is working perfectly, and they don't have ingress, and it's not; snowing, raining, windy, or there is absolutely zero solar interference emanating from 93,000,000 miles away, AND...well, you get the point. You'll never have a "perfect" connnection. There are far too many factors involved. IMO, it seems you've done all you can on your end.

It's almost a certainty that it would be a disc issue, given your answers. Discs can fail, even if they don't show any visible defects. Brand new discs aren't 100% immune to this phenomena either. I'd recommend finding a place that can resurface the game disc for you. A typical resurfacing job typically costs anywhere from as little as $1 up to $3, depending on where you go and what equipment they use.

That said, if the game was bought used, it may have already been resurfaced (perhaps more than once, even) and the disc layer is already too thin, thus causing the read fail. Still, it's worth a shot.

I bought the Samsung XL2370 LED monitor from Best Buy which is full 1080p

I connected my 360 via monster HDMI cable. and put the resolution on my 360 to 1080p. It looks great and all but on the bottom of the screen

You can see this fuzzy interference type of squiggly lines. Like the type you see on a pc screen when you have a cell phone around it

When I put it on 720p it looks smooth as can be.

what can be causing this issue.

If i buy an hdmi to div cable and connect the hdmi to my monitor via that dvi hookup. Would it improve the image

I am thinking one of two things:
A. a bad HDMI cable (go to www.monoprice.com for them..they are cheap and really good service and pretty decent wires for what you pay for! Highly recommend them)

or
B. Maybe it's the TV?

Ok checked my TV and 360..I am only able to place it in 1080i not 1080p why I dunno but that is ok.

The fuzzy interference that you get, does it look like the lines at the top of the screen?I get the horizontal lines (the lines go from top right to lower left "/") until I hit the "B" button to back out of the settings. Under the settings you may want to leave it as "Optimal Display".

Let me see what else I can find out.

Started happening to me last night. Fuzzy screen with blue outline on images. Last time it did this, the red rings came up. My xbox was sent in already for the red rings warranty already. This is the orginial xbox360. I guess I got pretty good life out of it. Sorry to let it go but the new HDMI xbox's would be nice.

I have a question, not a problem.

I had to send in my Xenon console to microsoft for RROD and because of my purchased warranty though them (and many emails) I recevied a Jasper unit.

Can I use the power supply from my Xenon unit with the Jasper? They only sent me a console not a power supply too.

Thanks.

I currently have an Xbox 360 Elite.

I am using it with a previous original Xbox wireless g adaptor and in my home I just chnaged to a N wireless network.

I was told that the G Xbox adaptor would work just fine and in most cases it does. But I am experiencing while playing on line a decent amount of signal loss which casues the game to lag severly.

Before I invest in a N Xbox adaptor does anyone else experience this and do you epxect that the N adaptor will eliminate this problem.

With our old G network the unit always worked flawlessly.

Thanks

I know this is my first post, but have looked everywhere and come up empty handed. Here are the specs of my system:

Brand new (purchased 1/20/10) xbox 360 Jasper
Using existing cables from other system which works perfectly (component and power)
Denon AVR-797 (no hdmi connections)
Samsung rear projection 65" (I can't think of the model atm)

I plugged in my brand new xbox last night, jumped on live and encountered the strangest issue. Anytime ANYTHING loads from the xbox (options menus, game levels, anything) my receiver relay begins clicking very fast, repeatedly until something loads on the screen. For example, it clicks for 5-6 seconds when I start the level, another 5-6 seconds when I finish it, another 5-6 seconds when I load the next one, etc. The screen displays something to the tune of "looking for signal" but the audio is just fine.

My other xbox works just fine (don't remember the model) but the new one is not getting along with my receiver. Any suggestions?

Does anyone know how to change the console associated with your xbox.com account? I still can't download anything to my XBOX from Marketplace on XBOX.com. It shows up on my console but says it's associated with another ID or something. It works fine if I DL it right from marketplace on my 360 though.

Here's one I just now encountered tonight:

Previous Setup:
Toshiba 32" 720p LCD TV (build-in DVD player)
Onkyo 6.1 Receiver
Xbox 360 Premium (with HDMI)

The 360 was connected to the TV via Component inputs and the optical audio cable was connected to the receiver's input. I had no sound/video issues.

Now, I have the exact same setup except with this TV: LG 47LH30 47" 1080p LCD. Just now trying to play Mass Effect 2 I get audio stuttering horribly. Even while in the dashboard, the sound effect was moving the cursor cuts in and out every 2-4 seconds. The only other change I made was to the 360's video output, which I changed from 720p to 1080p. Any idea what's causing the audio stuttering? Everything else seems to be fine. Changing the video back to 720p has no effect on the stuttering, either. Also, my digital output is currently set to "Dolby Digital 5.1." Changing this setting has no effect, either.

I would use the HDMI hookup to the TV, but whenver I did before, using my Harmony 676 remote to switch to another source and back to the 360 (leaving it on in the process) would cause it to reset. Unfortunately, my Onkyo receiver doesn't have HDMI, either.

I have Comcast cable with a digital cable box connect to the TV via composite cables and the TV is connected to the receiver with a optical audio cable (receiver has 2 optical audio inputs).

If you have XBox Live, simply buy a new HDD and recover your gamertag. Paying MS or anyone else to repair it would be beyond absurd, considering Xbox 250GB drives only cost $75 now.

Btw, E68 isn't always the hard drive itself. It can also be the leads from the console or the HDD not seating correctly. If it is the HDD and you don't have Live, you can always try the ol' "Tin Foil Bridge" trick...might work long enough to transfer the data to your new drive.

Do NOT pay for some ridiculous guide on how to do this!

Audio but no video = GPU. Try the X-Clamp fix. Costs about $7.

I have a 360 Elite, Olevia 232T, Sony STR-DG720. I currently have the 360 connected to the TV through HDMI, and sound goes from 360 to receiver through optical. What I want is HDMI going from the 360-Receiver-TV... not working. The image shows up for about 3 seconds, it's off for 10-30, then it's on, and this repeats. While I can see it I've changed every video setting and nothing works.

It works on my PC monitor, so it must be an issue with my TV. Does anyone have any ideas? Anybody have any firmwares saved that I could try or know of any settings? I'd like to be able to get a PS3 at some point and use HDMI for both. I do plan on getting a new TV, but that's much later in the future.

Finally got Error E74, took two and a half years which is pretty good I guess. Ironically, hadn't had any issues until I decided to play Crackdown for the first time in 2 years :D Got the rainbow/flickering/crazy screen and then next day DONE. :(

Just glad it happened now and not in 6 months after it's no longer covered.

I have my 360 hooked up via component to an onkyo receiver at 720p and 1080i and have been noticing for a few months that the image seems to be shifted a wee bit to the right, so there is a tiny sliver of a black bar on the left. I just figured it might be something they'd fix in an update because nothing else in my setup or settings has changed, but wanted to check if I'm the only one having this issue.

I have an issue that's pissing me off. My Gears 2 game has had a few issues recently with starting. I would get the "DisK is unreadable" message, so I'd pop it open and reclose it to get it to load. Well today I went to play and it wouldn't load at all, so I figured it might be a simple case of just a worn out game disk. I only play Gears of War and have almost 200,000 kills if that gives you any idea :)

Anyway, so I went and picked up a new copy to no avail. I still get the "Unreadable Disk" message. Every other game I own load's and play's fine ???? Any idea what gives???

That happened to me when I tore the shrinkwrap off Skate 2 this weekend. It's really kind of annoying considering the game is brand new and my 360 is less than a year old.

The good thing is you can install games to hard drives. Once the game installs it only uses the disc to authenticate. Try doing that. It doesn't "fix" the problem but if it installs properly you can play the game.

Maybe you have a bad dvd drive. Why would you buy another copy instead of just renting one for a few $$?

1. I guess I figured it was the problem (why I bought another)

2. EVERY other game I have loads and plays fine, including Gears I.....There's no way it's the drive or laser like I've read in a few forums as being the explination. If it is, could someone tell me how a bad drive or laser could POSSIBLY be bad for ONE game and not 20 others?? Plays DVD's fine as well....

As lasers get older, their intensity (and thus ability to read) fades, most often rather slowly, starting with one or two discs and then failing more and more often, eventually ending with an inability to read anything at all. The solution is to tweak the pot ever so slightly as time marches on, going from somewhere around 3.8 on down to 2.8 on your multimeter set at 20K. Not all discs are created equally, including those of the game variety. Gears may have been printed on discs with a slightly different dye contruct than some of the other games you currently own. It's highly likely that you'll get more and more errors fairly soon if your original disc was not merely the problem.

Hello all,

I've been having problems with my xbox since last night. I was playing MW2 online when the system froze (fun). When I rebooted the system, I was prompted with a system update. I allowed the thing to update, but everytime I do, the system reboots after the update and freezes, either at the loading screen or 3 minutes into any xbox live match I try. When I restart it, it wants to update again in order to reach xbox live. The funny thing is my roomates have been playing all day offline and haven't had any problems. It's only when I try to connect online and get this update request that things go wrong.

I suppose it could just be the usual 3 rings problem, but it felt unique because the freezing doesn't (yet) take place except for when trying to update the system. Hell, I dont even know if there was an actual update last night. Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks!

I was playing COD MW2 last night and all of a sudden this layer of pixelation came over the screen. Every couple of minutes the screen would go back to normal, but after five seconds the graphics would return to being messed up. If i reset the system, the graphics will go back to normal until the system warms up. I can play one game of COD before it happens. Is this the E74 error? If so what should I do?

That is EXACTLY what happened to me a few weeks ago, except when I restarted it I got the E74 error and the Xbox wouldn't play again. I bought a new one, sent the old one to Microsoft, they sent me a new one for free, and I sold the replacement on eBay.

I didn't want to wait on Microsoft before I could play again (and I wanted a newer Elite with a newer chipset and smaller power brick).

The one that E74ed was an original Elite and Microsoft still "fixed" it for free.

Good luck!

You don't have to wait for it to "officially" die. Just send it to MS and claim it showed E74.

Most likely a broken solder joint in the A/V connector or under the (H)ANA chip. If you don't see any physical damage to the connector, best bet is to reflow (or even better, reball with lead-free solder) the chip.

dammit, the DVD on my 360 pro stopped reading discs for the 2nd thime, this weekend. I have an original release console, and MS has repaired it for the 3x red rings, for E74 video, and previously swapped out the DVD. The console is still under 1 year warranty for replacing the dvd last year. I called MS and told them about all the repairs I've had on it, but all they said is that they will run full diagnostics on it

at what point does MS finally replace the failed console with a different one? and if they do, would they replace it with a "refurbished pro" or would they send me an arcade instead ?

Microsoft policy is to send you a refurbished unit of the same model that you sent in. In some cases, they re-use the guts or shell from the console you send them, but I believe it depends on current inventory.

Due to the constant recycling, it is possible that the unit they send you back as a replacement (i.e. someone else's broken and partially repaired unit) has more problems than the one you sent in. For example, they don't replace your broken DVD drive with a brand new one. Rather, Microsoft gives you the already worn (and potentially already near failing) DVD drive from another console, or will just give you the entire guts from that console. If that console had some other minor "quirks", you will now experience those too.

Saturday watching LOST on Netlix my screen went major on some pixilation then froze.
After I reset it would constantly freeze while loading the dashboard.

A little back story is that I've been getting the E74 error off and on for close to a year.
But if I restarted the machine it would play fine for any length of playing time. (zero freezing till now)
In some instances on the first start of the day it wouldn't boot and I would just have to restart it and it was always fine.

Calling 4myxbox, the tech support person suggested that my E74 error may be the hardrive or the machine and suggested to try playing the rest of the day without the HD to see if I still had the freezing issues.

After pulling the HD off and booted everything was fine, no freezing at the dashboard.
I popped in the few games that don't require HD to play and had no issues.
Tried Raiden and MW2 and played for 4 hours straight, left it paused for a few hours and went back and all was fine.

Anyone else having issue's and then it turned out to be the HD?

Looks like the 250GB HD was released just in time for me.

E74 is absolutely NOT the hard drive. It is the (H)ANA chip on newer consoles without the spider leg design or the GPU on the older models. Your Xbox is going to get progressively worse and worse until..."Sorry, but that console is no longer covered under warranty. Please send us $140 to fix your $100 console."

Call them and have the console repaired for E74. NOW. Do not even acknowledge scripted, yet absurd and deflecting suggestions from the CS representative in India.

Thanks for the reply spyder, I'm not surprised to hear that those tech support guys don't know what they're talking about.

But regardless, my HD still seems to be causing freezing.
It wouldn't do any good to fix the machine just to be stopped from playing because the HD is bad.

I'm going to try it on a buddies 360 to see if it still causes the same issue I'm having.

Hey guys just a note, if you're having a game update problem, you can clear all updates from your 360 with a few clicks, they will re-download the next time you run the game.

Dashboard - - my xbox - - settings - - storage - - select your storage device and press Y for settings - - look for clear cache NOT FORMAT

This will remove all GAME updates so you can re-download them if you suspect a problem or a company pushed a bad update to your game and re-pushed a fix without bumping the revision number.

You can do it as often as you want and it won't hurt a thing.

Also if you're using a optical dongle and have the restart issue there's a thread here that's perfect. I didn't even solder anything just bent the non-connected side of pins to connect things and voila.

Alright guys, so the 1st time my xbox broke down(right when I bought it too lol), I did the X-clamp fix, worked for a few weeks, broke down again, re-flowed it with a heatgun(ana chip, gpu/cpu, board, etc.) that fixed it for about a month.

So now, the console starts up fine and all but whenever I boot up a game, about a minute or two into the game, the screen just goes to a black(usually) or a purple(happened once) screen, no audio or nothing, no red lights, lights are still green, no loud fan noises or anything. There is no pixelation before it goes to the black, blank screen, just suddenly turns to a blank screen out of nowhere. It just started happening to me a few days ago, this damn xbox is pissing me off, seriously.

Any ideas guys, should I try reflowing it again?

He's trying to set-up his girlfriend's nephew's 360 and he's having trouble connecting to the Internet. It's a wireless router, and the router is set-up for DHCP Server, and the household connects that way using 2 laptops. He's tried dynamic, which failed...I walked him through a static address in the router's range, and that failed as well. He moved the 360 closer...in case it was a range issue...no dice; and he even tried a hard cable, with a dynamic address and that didn't work either.

I'm a PS3 guy, but I know networking...which is why he enlisted my help...but not knowing 360 I'm out of ideas. Help?

Thanks,

Hi guys. I have a seriously weird problem and I hope someone recognizes it and can provide some advice.

I use HDMI running to a Onkyo Tx606 receiver with a Panasonic Plasma set. Every time I turn on my 360 I see only black screen and no sound. It takes 3 to 5 reboots to get a signal show up on my set. Lately it's gotten so bad, I have to unplug the HDMI on the console and plug it back in to get a picture/sound. And even that doesn't always work. Once I get it working..it's seems fine, until I start up the next session the next day.

I assumed it was my less then 12 month old Jasper arcade unit acting up.. so I rehooked up my old PRO model (also with HDMI) and THE SAME THING HAPPENS. So now I know it's not the 360's.. but a switching problem(?). I had to download an 'security' update when I re-hooked up the old PRO and it got me wondering if they messed with the HDMI security handshake thing and that's causing it. I expected to see a thread here with a ton of people having this problem ..but I couldn't find anything here in this thread.

My next option would be to go back to componet and TOS cable but I so like the HDMI route. WTF is going on??:(

you could try changing some of the settings in your dash's hdmi (advanced) tab, but I suspect that the problem is either occurring at the receiver or at the tv. Try running the hdmi directly from the xbox to the tv to see if you can eliminate the receiver and go from there.

Good idea.. I didn't want to loose my 5.1 sound but to trouble shoot it I should try that.. thx. I'll let ya know...

update:

Okay.. you where right.. bypassing the Onkyo receiver and hooking the HDMI directly to the plasma set shows a proper boot up sequence. This must mean my Onkyo is acting up!! :( I'm off to the Onkyo Tx606 thread.. thanks for your help.

My new Arcade boots up incredibly slow. It takes a good 40-50 seconds for it to boot.

I have done some normal TS'ing of it including:

- booting without a hdd connected
- booting without network connected
- power cycling
- clearing cache on all memory devices
- moving profile to the internal memory

And nothing seems to work. Any ideas?

I have it connected direct to my TV via VGA.

I seem to be having issues with my xbox arcade + HDDVD add-on giving me stupid HDCP link lost warnings on certain HD DVDs. any ideas? from googling the HDCP issues, it seems that microsoft just simply has crappy hardware and there is no solution, and this only happens on some HD DVDs.

Hi fellow xbox guys and gals. Here's the issue I'm having:

Once I'm signed into Xbox Live and say I go to download something and instead of just sitting and waiting, I go to watch a TV show while the file is downloading. I choose the TV output and off I go. Now here's where the problem kicks in. When I go back to the xbox output the xbox reboots. I get the whole shebang, with the logo and music and I'm back at the dashboard. It happens every time, even if I just paused a game I was playing. Is there some setting that I am missing or can change to eliminate the xbox from rebooting?
Here's my setup:
Sony KDS50A2000
Xbox Elite
Pioneer receiver VSX-816
The xbox is connected with HDMI to the TV for video. I am using optical cable for audio output from the xbox to my receiver. The receiver does not have HDMI. The TV audio output has optical to the receiver. I only use broadcast TV, so no cable box. Actually, as I am writing this I'm beginning to wonder if the problem is just that, using hdmi for video and optical for audio, instead of just hdmi for both. Did I just answer my own question or does someone have another suggestion?

I tried emailing xbox support but it seems they are too dumb to understand my issue, so I gave up after 4 emails of nonsensical replies to fix problems that weren't related.

Many setups have been reported to cause the Xbox to reset via HDMI. The optical isn't the issue. Your only option is to use component or revise your setup with some solution that doesn't cause this problem. There is also a nice feature built into the 360 that you might not be aware of. Hit the guide button then go to the last tab, Settings, select System Settings/ Console Settings / Startup and Shutdown / Background Downloads and ENABLE that.

Now when you turn off your 360, it will continue to download whatever you have in your active download queue, then turn off fully when it's done.

If your console has not logged an E74 error, you will be offered our standard out-of-warranty repair fee... 3Red LED's Your console may qualify for in-warranty service for this issue. If your console has not logged a 3 Flashing Red Light error, you will be offered our standard out-of-warranty repair fee..., however it wont let you proceed until you provide payment information. If the repair is covered under the extended warranty is there no charge?

After doing the Lawdawg fixes, I noticed there is an increase in the spacing between the MB and chassis. Removing the steel washer restored the original spacing. Doing this to nonfunctioning fixed Xboxs made them all functional.

I believe this increased spacing bowed the MB when all the other screws were reinstalled. This bowing probably continued to cause the RROD. No bowing, no RROD. Does this make any sense?

Yes. I've even used NO washers for badly overheated units, depending upon the bolts used.

Does anybody know why two different xboxes have different heatsink temperatures? On one I can barely put my hands on the CPU heatsinks becuz of how hot it is but on the other one, I can leave my hand on it all day. I use the same external cooling fan and play the same games on both. The internal fans both seem to run at the same speeds.

It appears that your xbox is intermittent due to overheating. Try using a fan to cool the box. Blow into the side opposite the hard drive.

Guys is it true that using wired controllers is better for response time over wireless controllers

I hear that using wired controllers improves input lag about 16mm

Is that true

If the problem is overheating you might consider putting a laptop cooler under the console. You can find them pretty cheap (under $10) and plug it right into the usb port.

You could try the laptop cooler. However from my experience you need to get cool air into the console. A tabletop fan set on high and aimed at the holes on the side would blow air right into the console. If this helps then you could get the external fan that attaches to the back of the Xbox console.

I've had some success with this fan: http://www.coolerguys.com/840556088417.html It's rated at 19 db so it's VERY quiet.

It's a USB fan so it's easy to plug into one of the 5 ports. It SUCKS out the heat so as it comes from the factory it could be placed on top of the unit if you desire.

*ugh*

My old 360 PRO got the 3RR on Friday, for the 2nd time. Was playing NCAA 11 a few days prior and the game froze up twice. Turned it on Friday, and it froze @ the launch screen. Rebooted, and 3RR. 3RR still today. I called customer support, as they had done the repair once before. My original 3 year warranty expired Aug. 2008, but they repaired it in May 2008, and they do a 1 year warranty from date of repair apparently, since it expired in May 2009.

What's the consensus? Should I pay the $100 for another repair? Do I try to find one of the last few old model Elite's at a discount (are they still available anywhere)? Or do a full-blown new slim console?

A) Do NOT pay $100 for MS to "repair" your old console!

B) Why buy an Elite when an Arcade is 1/2 the cost? (Both have same guts.)

C) Slims are, as of yet, completely unproven and only have a ONE-YEAR warranty...and a very vague one, at that. There are tons of loopholes in there for MS to wiggle through and wrangle even more of your hard-earned cash.

Option A isn't even a choice, imo. I'd pitch my 360 off a roof before I gave them $100 for a FrankenBox that's just going to die again soon. Option C might be okay if you'd never owned an Xbox and didnt' already have all the accessories or needed a new wireless adapter. however, in your case, I'd say just buy a new Arcade that comes with a THREE-YEAR warranty and forget about a so-called "repair" or the risky Slim.

I had thought about an Arcade version after I posted this. I would just move over my 20gig HD and 8GB USB stick, so no issue there. What's the other differences in the Arcade?

I guess as far as data transfer, since I'm not even able to boot up my 360 to see, I hope I wouldn't be leaving any data behind on the internal memory.

I understand what your saying on Slim vs. old Arcade, good points. I need to dig deeper.

EDIT: Am I understanding correctly that I can't snap on the 20GB HD from my PRO to a Slim 4GB?

Did they say they are going to charge you or are you assuming they are? I've read lots of posts where MS fixes consoles, even those that are out of warranty, for free. Especially those with the RROD and other certain error codes. So, call them first before you start pulling your hair out over nothing. ;)

Thanks for the suggestion. I did specifically call this morning about this, that's how I found out about my warranty expiring in May vs. Aug '08. She actually quoted me $120 for the repair, which is in line with what's on their website ($100 if you do it online, $120 via a CSR).

You can't use an old hard drive on a Slim AT ALL. They are completely different in design. If your dead 360 had anything on the 512MB internal memory, it's gone...barring you fix it and transfer the data or you have Live and recover it somehow that way.

The difference between the Arcade and the Elite is nothing more than memory size and color.

As Pluvious said, new Arcades/Elites are Jaspers. While not completely failsafe, the smaller, 45nm chipset is an improvement over the older ones. No worries anyway...you'll be covered for 3 whole years from purchase. (As opposed to 1 year of extremely limited coverage with the Slim.)

Thanks again to both, I snagged an Arcade last night (wasn't the Spring bundle with the 2 games, but no biggie). Plan on hooking it up tonight and getting back in the game. What a no-brainer; pay MS $100 and *hope* that RROD doesn't happen again, although since this is already the 2nd time, why wouldn't it? Or, pay $130 for a brand new unit, with the better chip, a 3-year warranty, and another controller? Sure, it's not pretty and slim and glossy black, but considering the money I saved, who cares! :)

I now have the option to go HDMI, instead of VGA. VGA looks absolutely great on my Samsung DLP LED, plus I need to use the optical cable for audio, as my receiver doesn't have HDMI, so I think I may just stick with VGA, unless the opinion is that HDMI is that much better. Maybe I will do a few tests tonight.

The Slim Arcade only has a puny 4GB of memory. The Slim "Elite" has 250GB.

Non-Slim Elites come in 120GB and 250GB variations, depending upon packaging.

Non-Slim Elites are a beautiful and easy to maintain matte black, whereas the Slims are a shiny black that shows every last bit of dust and/or fingerprint and, to me, looks cheap.

All Slims have built-in Wi-Fi, and are a tiny bit more quiet than the other models...assuming you're putting all of your games on the hard drive...and you should be. Slims also need no connector for the yet-unreleased Kinect, if you're interested in that sort of thing.

Most importantly, Slims get only a ONE-YEAR, very limited warranty, while non-Slims of any variety get ONE-YEAR of coverage for anything at all and THREE FULL YEARS that covers all E74 and RRoD issues...the most common problems you'll ever have with a 360.

IMHO, I think the HDMI did make the picture sharper and clearer when I went from VGA to HDMI.

I also am using optical for my audio with HDMI for video for the same reason that you are. Just a heads up, you might run into the same issue I was having that when you switch inputs on your TV while playing the Xbox. Let's say you wanted to pause your game to watch a TV show and then went back to play your game. What was happening was the Xbox would reboot when I went back to it. So, you would have to restart the game from your last save, not from where you left off or if you were downloading a file, you would have to start over. I found out this happens because of using the two different inputs for audio and video. I fixed the issue by buying a new cable from a guy on ebay that has the fix for it inside the cable. The cable costs me less then $10. Of course, if you're handy with soldering, it's something you can do yourself. In case you run into the issue and are interested in the fix there's a thread for it: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=924291 You'll find the fix in the last pages.

I think you overstated the 1 yr vs 3 yrs warranty issue. The new slim has been built to address all those old problems and I'm sure they didn't create new design without a mission statement of "get it right this time". Reverting back to the STANDARD 1 year warranty would be par if they succeeded. The new slim doesn't need a 3 yr warranty. NO more RRoD and E74 problems.

The only thing I can ding the new design about is how dust has pretty much a direct line of sight down onto the chip. Could have used a dust filter between the grill IMHO.

So hooked up the new Arcade last night, transferred the licenses, snapped on the hard drive and USB thumb drive, and all is well. I see the new power supply now has a fan in it, and is smaller in size. The 360 itself seems quieter, about as loud as the PS fan actually.

I did some comparison tests between VGA and HDMI....I honestly can't tell a difference. Even took a bunch of pics, and looking at them this morning, can't see a difference. I'll just leave it on VGA for now, so I don't have to get anything modified to have the HDMI cable and the optical audio cable hooked up at the same time.

On a side note, as I was re-downloading some stuff, I thought I'd give the towel trick a shot on my old 360 PRO. Wrapped it for 25 minutes, cooled it down for about 20 minutes, and what do you know; it worked. I was actually able to play a game, no problems. From what I understand, this may stay the case for 4-5 days or so, and then it will revert back to RROD. Nice that I was able to go through and verify no other info was left on the 360 though.

Thanks for all the help, the new Arcade was a great choice.

I suppose if you compare the Slim to the OLD (Xenon and some Falcon) units, then the differences in fan noise could be described as more than "a little bit." Compared to the NEW Jaspers, the story is quite different, and I stand by my statement. When the game is installed to the hard drive, most people comment how quiet my 360s are...even compared against my Slims.

As to the warranty, it is my belief that the only thing that MS "got right" (at least, for themselves) was the loopholes in coverage this time around. By eliminating the red LED lights, and thus, the codes that come with them; they gave themselves an out against RRoD and E74 issues. By exempting themselves with other stipulations, such as "not enough ventilation" and "use of non-official MS products," they created even more of a buffer against claims.

If MS is so certain that they've created a better product, they should have extended the warranty, not shortened it. My wife's store has already had more than a few fistfuls of Slims returned for a number of issues, even in this short, short amount of time since release. :(

All I can say is my Jasper Elite was ridiculously loud, and far worse if I dared to let the game stream from the disk. And honestly, you should not have to install every game to get a reasonably quiet console, short games I know I'm only playing once aren't worth the time to install IMHO. Installing to hard drive has been listed as a perk, not a necessity, and should be treated that way.

The return time for your console is pretty quick. You'll probably have the console in a couple of weeks counting from when you ship it to when it is returned to you. So the sooner you get it shipped out the quicker you'll get it back and playing Halo Reach.

Spyder: I think you're putting to much emphasis on the one year warranty on the new slim. One year is the average length for a warranty on most electronics. I can understand why you think MS should keep it at three years but until the new console proves it's not reliable that's not going to happen. This is a new build with new componets, let's give it a chance to prove itself. :)

I see what you're saying, but I ask: If MS (and many early-adopters/fan boys) are so convinced that the issues have actually been addressed, why shorten the warranty period, along with remove the red LEDs? Why not provide consumers with peace of mind and lengthen the warranty?

Not alot of people are aware than the Slim only give one meager year of coverage. Many are still under the impression that it's 3 years. Sure, most electronics only have one year of coverage...but most electronics don't have a notorious history of failure. Time will tell whether or not the Slim is truly "improved," but I'd rather be on the side of caution and lose out on the eye-rolling "Me first!" factor than on the other side where unquestioned adoration can cost hundreds of dollars.

To each their own.

I noticed an interesting problem the past few days. I have everything connected via HDMI that goes:

Xbox <> receiver <> TV

I've noticed that the display will move 3-4 pixels when I turn on the Xbox and since I have overscan reduced down, it ends up leaving a black bar on a side or top/bottom at times.

Any way to fix this or is this just a feature?

I had a XBOX 360 which was a falcon/HDMI system. Bought new in late Nov 2007. Last year I bought a new Elite and had this system in the closet. Last week I pulled it out and checked it out and ran it for over 4 hours and it worked fine. I sent it to my sister along with some old games for her grand kids to use. She called last night and after running it for about 1/2 hour it froze up and now she only gets the red rings on it.

I felt really bad because the kids were really looking forward to getting it. They don't have much and my sister can't afford those type of luxuries so I thought they could have some fun with it.

Anyway are we totally screwed? Will MS fix a unit like this or is it worth trying to get it back from her and send it in? I told her I would check and I'll pay to get the thing fixed for the kids but I can't buy a new system either right now.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Check to see if the unit is still covered under their 3 year warranty. If so, cool. If not, it's I believe $100 for repair if you submit it online, and $120 if you do it over the phone. Up to you if it's worth it or not.

If it is still under warranty, no need to have sis ship it back to you. (Assuming you shipped it since you said you "sent" it to her.) If you never registered it, she can send it in under her name for free. If you did register it, you could still do the "paperwork" and just list her address for return, saving some shipping time, money, and hassle.

As to the $100 repair if it's not under warranty, it would be absurd to pay MS to "fix" that ancient console. Arcades regularly can be found for under $100 with little effort. The kids have waited this long, what's another few weeks? Even if you don't want to be bothered with waiting or finding a deal, you'd be incredibly better off dumping that old unit on CL/eBay for $50 and using the $100 to buy a brand new console.

Paying MS the astronomical fee of $100 shouldn't even be considered an option, imo.

While I agree, and I actually took your advice and found a new Arcade for $130, they can't "regularly" be found for "under $100". I haven't seen any at my local stores in a few weeks.

When I look up the s/n online it says the warranty expired in Feb 2009. I found the original reciept and I did buy it from Fry's on Nov 30 2007. I did register it back then. I would think it would still be covered under the three year extension. I'll have to call next week and see what they say.

I won't pay them to fix one if it isn't under warranty. Is there a place online to get an old style arcade?

I don't keep up on this stuff like I did a few years back so I'm sorry for all the questions. I appreciate all the advice.

That's probably just the standard 1 year warranty. From the Xbox support site:

Three flashing red lights or an E74 error

If your consoles has three flashing red lights or an E74 error, the warranty period is extended to three years from the original purchase date of the console and there is no charge for the repair.

We will test your console for three flashing red lights or an E74 error upon receipt at our service center. If your console does not exhibit three flashing red lights or an E74 error, and you are out of the standard one year Product Warranty, you can have your console repaired for a fee or choose to have your console returned to you unrepaired.

3 years for you is coming up, better get on it. :)

I'm going to suggest that once you get the console fixed and returned, that you make sure your sister places it in a well ventilated area, not inside a cabinet with no ventilation. Make sure the vents on the console (sides, top) aren't blocked. You might even want to try a laptop cooler underneath it or have some type of fan blowing on it. It won't guarantee that it won't happen again but hopefully it will help keep the console from overheating again. You'll most likey get a refurbished console back with a larger heat sink installed inside.

On the subject of paying for the repair. I agree with the others that said it's better to just put that money towards a newer model. It doesn't even need to be the new Slim. You can most likely find an Elite console for a good deal. Be careful if you were to buy a used console. They might have been banned by MS from using Live for one reason or another.

+1. I would also suggest actually running it without the cover on. I repaired a RROD unit by replacing the X-clamp. Been running the unit since early July and is still running like a champ. Just use a good size table fan. I fixed my nephew's XBOX and told him to use a fan. Of course he didn't listen so he got the RROD in two weeks. I refused to fix it again.

Got everything submitted and printed of the label for shipping back tomorrow.

Well, our Pro XBox 360 (20GB) went down...unable to read discs. I check XBox.com for warranty status, which was of course showed our unit warranty expired. XBox wanted $99.99 + tax to repair this specific problem (have not had the dreaded RROD issue with this unit).

Based on suggestions from this thread we decided to purchase an Arcade model from Walmart @ $149.99 +tax and 2 year extend service plan for $20. So, we know have a new unit, three years of warranty....I will switch the hard drive to the Arcade model and the better-half will be happy. Thanks for all the posts related to resolving issues and sensible options.

Heck Yeah! Locally....I searched every Target (0),Best Buy (0), Toys R Us(0), Walmart (only 1 Store w/3 left in stock), Sears (1 Store w/1 in stock), Game Stop (only used/refurbished available), etc. and of course the stores with availability where clear across town. What did you do with the old one? You could throw a new laser in it with VERY little effort. There are lots of guides online on how to do it, and the laser itself typically runs about $6-$7. Never hurts to have a spare 360 lying around.

Believe it or not, eBay.

I know, I know...people hate eBay, but it's the best bet for Joe Consumer to get it for cheap.

Be sure to open up the box/drive and check which laser you have before you buy. The part number should be on the bottom of the laser. (SF-HD67 is one model, to give you an idea of what you're looking for.) You can also cross-reference with your particular drive model. Still, getting the part # off the laser is the safest bet.

Good luck!

Well hope you're ready for a complete dummy, got the Xbox 360 S console with a 250gb HD. I assumed when popping a game in, it would automatically install it on hard drive. Evidently it doesn't, it just automatically starts the game to play. I need a step by step explanation and since I've already mentioned the dummy status make it simple.

Goto the game in dashboard and press Y. Just follow the instructions on the bottom of the screen.

1 Load the disk into your Xbox 360 console and go to your Xbox 360 console
2 Scroll up to My Xbox
3 Scroll across to the Game and hit the Y button

Edit, I just got on again and decided to go to system settings and when there I checked memory which took me to hard drive and then to another list which on top was games. (follow me so far) I then clicked on games and found that my Halo 3 was using 10 MB and Halo 2 was using 4 MB.

There were some other games that must have come with it
1. A Kingdom for Keflings
2. Hexic HD
3. Peggle
4. Pinball FX

Evidently it is installing games directly to HDD, I have 228 GB free.

Yes.. at My Xbox where it says "play Halo 2" hit the Y button. Give it about 10-15 seconds and another option will appear on the list..

Play game
Install game <-----
Delete game

It takes a while but it's worth the time invested to install. Makes the unit more quiet by not having to spool the game while you play. As a bonus.. some games load faster from the drive then from the disc. I think Halo 2 is one of the games that DOESN'T benefit from install and is actually WORSE. Either that or Halo 3.. is the one that's not worth installing.

Those are TRIAL games (demos) and if you like them you can purchase them directly from your console if you enter your Credit Card info. (handy!)

2nd edit: Get UNO if you want a casual game. HIGHLY recommend.
ps. the DASHBOARD and "OS" is taking up some of your hard disc space.. the games do not install automatically.

LOL. Your Xbox isn't borked. By barfing on Halo, the hard drive is desperately trying to tell you that the Bungie universe has finally gone the way of the dinosaur and it's time to move on to the thousands of better games out there for those over the age of 8. That's one smart hard drive! :D

Seriously, 99.9% of games are going to work just fine and be MUCH quieter and faster when installed.
JUST REMEMBER TO WAIT A FEW SECONDS FOR THE INSTALL FEATURE TO COME UP!

I'm not upset, I just like to stir the pot a bit. I was definitely interested in why it would not do an install. As usual AVS forum got me all back bright-eyed and bushy tailed, I don't have to throw my new console away.

I did do a Quake 4 install and all appears to be working fine. Another step forward for a Dummy.

I do have Halo ODST ordered, any trouble with install. Now if you have to delete any of the installed games that you do have a problem with does it do a full delete. Again just curious.

Yes, it will delete the game if you choose to do so. The save game itself will NOT. That way if you wish to reinstall the game again you will still have your progress. If you know for sure that you don't want keep the save file (all your progress in the game) then you can goto memory management and manually delete it. In other words.. save games are separate from the actual game install itself.

Halo 3 is the only game that I know of that will not perform as well installed.

I purchased the Halo ODST game and fooled around a little with it and so far not too impressed as the 1st 2 brute types are hard to kill with weapons you start with, much ammo used. However if i have the Xbox plugged into the projector without the optical going into the amp i can see it fine, and if i have the optical plugged into the amp without the HDMI cable in the pojector i can hear it fine, only when they are both plugged in does it mess up. is there any way to sort this out?

My daughter recently purchased an Xbox360 with the Kinect bundle. An added bonus for her was being able to stream HD movies wirelessly to her HDTV. We already stream movies to a PS3 in the family room and a WDTV Live in the bedroom via PS3 Media Server. She was disappointed to find that the video quality streamed thru the Xbox was of really poor quality. The same movies that stream to the PS3 and WDTV with flawless quality, look awful when streamed to the Xbox. We have the Xbox connected to her TV in the very same manner that the PS3 and WDTV are connected - via HDMI cable. We tried all manner of configurations in the Xbox settings without success, including switching out the HDMI cable with a different one. All we got were varying degrees of poor quality video - something on the scale of maybe a bad DVD rip is the best way I can describe it. Alternatively, the Xbox dashboard looked sharp and vivid, so I don't know. I suspected maybe HDMI issues but then the dashboard would look bad too. So maybe issues with the hardware? Perhaps she received a lemon. At any rate, we gave up and returned the machine for a refund but out of curiosity I wanted to to internet research to see if this was a known problem. The only issues I found have been streaming of Netflix video. I thought I would post here to see if anyone has had any experience with this problem. I am not a PS3 fanboy lol. My daughter (and the rest of us) was really looking forward to using the Kinect feature but she also wanted to be able to stream movies to her room too. The streaming was a critical factor for her since we have terabytes of stored HD movies. All responses are welcome and appreciated.

I'm sure you did but thought I'd ask anyway, you did go into the video settings of the console and set it to the correct format? 1080p? Could be like you said and you just got a lemon. You should have exchanged it for another one just to be make sure. Do yourself a favor and just go and replace it with a new "slim" model. You do NOT want to get into the refurbished cycle at MS. They STILL are just referbing units instead of properly replacing with new. You will open yourself to a high chance of inheriting a different machines 'issues'.

No, you're best move would be to go and spend the $299 on a 250 GB Slim since the next year is going to be a HUGE push for 360 to become a ultimate set top box for your living room. You'll need/want the space anyway.

Couldn't disagree more. If AmEx is in fact covering the repair costs, why wouldn't he go that route, regardless if he gets a refurb back? Shockingly, a lot of people can't and/or don't want to throw another $300 at something they already paid for.

Yes, its $99 if you do the claim online, $120 if you do it over the phone. For me, I decided to find an old model Arcade unit on sale for $130, as opposed to paying the $99 repair fee. Sticking with the model you currently have allows you to move your hard drive to the new/refurbed unit without modding, as you would need to for the new model.

Go for it.

My 3 years, 2 months old machine RROD'd on me last night. Assuming I can find my reciept I'll be getting reimbursed by AMEX for the repair cost, which I understand is $99. Anyone with recent experience having one of these things fixed/replaced/whatever they do?

jeff

Normally, I'd say it was beyond ridiculous to pay $100 to repair ANY Xbox ever made. However, if AMEX is going to reimburse you the cost of the repair bill, you'd be a complete fool to not go that route.

What you do with the repiared unit is up to you. You could keep it and hope that it doesn't croak again (which is certainly a possibility) or you could seek a replacement. If you can find a deal on a new Slim this holiday season, you might consider one and sell your old unit, thus offsestting some of the cost of an "upgrade." For what it's worth, the Slims are not a magical device that do anything beyond what your current Xbox already does.

Good luck!

It does appear that AMEX is going to cover the $99 repair bill, so while the slim and its big hard drive are tempting I just can't justify plunking down a couple hundred bones when I can be back in business for free. With a 14-month old running around my Xbox time is limited as it is :D

FWIW, I misplaced my original reciept (but somehow the receipt for Halo 3, which I bought at the same time with cash, was in the 360's box!), but Best Buy of all places is coming through. I called the store I bought it from, gave them my phone number and they found the transaction in about 10 seconds. They can print me a new reciept, just need to go in and get it.

Once I have that I need to fax a bunch of stuff to AMEX for approval before shipping off the Xbox. I'll let you know how that works out.

As a new 250gb unit owner I agree, like the HDMI and the install of games on HD and the digital audio. No glitches at all once I got the hang of what games would install etc. If money is short as it is with a lot of people in this economy you just got to do what you can afford.

Hi All,

Total noob to xbox here. I picked up an xbox 360 250 G (holiday pack) last night. I hooked it up and loaded the disc to play the car race game that came with it (at work now and can't remember the name..fun though). When the disc drive started up it made, what I thought, a lot of noise. The box itself also got very warm. Is this normal for xbox 360 or is a trip back to the store in order.

Thanks,

Bry (former Game Cube player)

The new slims get VERY hot and it's normal. The noise however, is not. It does make 'some' noise when you spin up the disc or install a game but once you have it installed you should hear "nothing". It's practically silent. The heat is SUPER hot but again.. that's normal. I'd be worried about any grinding or loud cd drive noise.

Thanks for the reply. The noise is similar to what's made by my computer when copying CDs, so I guess that's OK. It does go awway after the game has loaded. I dropped by the store after work and the guy said exactly what you said about the heat.....normal for this model. Will this heat lead to failure? I know if my laptop heated up like this, I would be very concerned.

More heat OUT of console = less heat INSIDE console. That's a good thing. :) Loading games not only makes your Xbox less noisy; it allows it to run a bit cooler, since there is less power drawn in running the disc drive. Always load games, regardless of what version of console you own.

The Slim is too new to make any real claims as to reliability.

Supposedly there is a feature built into the new slims that if it reaches a state where it gets too hot it will notify you via a warning and then shut off. That's a good thing.. and even better, I haven't heard of ANY reports of this happening in the wild yet. That's a good sign to me that they have finally put to rest the number one negative criticism the 360 gets.

Time will tell. ;)

is the 360 slim console supposed to be hotter on the top part of the console compared to the back on the older models ?

I just got my 360 slim and have my older console as well. yeah its much quieter but it gets really hot on the top part of the console. its even more hot than the back of the console of the older model 360 i have. my older model 360 was the one that came with forza and marvel ultimate alliance in late 07

Don't know if this helps with heat or not, every game console (PS3 etc) and now my new 260gb unit I have always placed small rubber squares under units (raises unit 1/2 inch) for airflow underneath. The new 360 sits almost flat on surface and I hope it helps a tad. Again I don't have a clue as to whether it helps anything or not, I have been fortunate and have not had any problems with my asst units.

Well that was quick. I made the call to AMEX last Tuesday. I was told to fax them a copy of the store reciept, the billing statement the charge was on (why I have to provide them with one, which I simply downloaded from their website, is beyond me), a copy of the Xbox warranty, and a copy of the repair order with cost. So I spent the week getting that stuff in order.

I was getting ready to fax it all in today when I decided to check online to see if there was a status on the claim or something. Even better, turns out last Wednesday there was a credit on my account for the full purchase price including tax of the 360 when I bought it back in 2007. I called them up to verify that everything was settled and they said yup, it's closed. Don't need to send them any paperwork or anything.

So I'm planning on picking up a 250 GB slim. I understand these are $300, with a variety of bundles available at various retailers with free games and stuff?

Most (retail) games are 4-5 GB in size, so somewhere around 50-65 games (not counting DLC, videos, trials/demos, etc.) would need to be on a 250GB hard drive in order for it to be full. Even then, the hdd would work fine, it would just require you to delete a game in order to intall a new one.

I snagged what appeared to be the last 250 gig with Forza 3 & Alan Wake bundle at the Rockville, MD Best Buy yesterday. Also got the hard drive transfer cable. So 3 years 2 months after I bought my 20 gig Pro model for $350, I've got a brand new machine, 2 games, and $28 to spare. Thank you American Express! :D

Set up of the new machine has been fairly smooth. The transfer cable worked fine. I had to do some dremel surgery on my toslink cable, it's got a big fat square connector that didn't fit into the Xbox. Also having trouble with the online licenses transfer tool but I figure that'll get worked out soon enough.

Continuing with the silly questions...If I hook up to X-Box Live, how much bandwidth is used. I have no intent to play on-line but apparently there are other things that you can do (mea culpa but very new to the x-box world) and I am just curious how much of my limited bandwidth of 25 GB / month would be used. The daughter chews up a lot of it with university lectures and research. Also, I got a coupon for Alan Wake when I bought the X-box. Does this download come bit for bit or is it compressed? Just curious.

How hard is it to replace a DVD drive in an old 360? I have had one of my back up 360s I was using in the other room. It was for when one of my nephews come over. You said you tried blowing the dust out, did you try a dvd cleaner and try using a q-tip dipped in some alcohol to clean the lens? Worked on my pc dvd drive when it wouldn't read.

I haven't done it myself but it shouldn't be that difficult. The most difficult part is probably taking the 360 case off.
Here's a video, you can find more on You Tube:
http://www.bing.com/videos/watch/video/xbox-360-dvd-drive-removal/4c32257ecebcb547dae54c32257ecebcb547dae5-310149514793?q=xbox%20360%20dvd%20drive%20replacement

The drives will cost you around $30. Depending on which model you have, Samsung, Thompson, or Toshiba. You said it's an older 360, now with a broken drive, you probably won't get much if anything if you try to sell it. Just do a search for replacement xbox 360 drives.

Replacing the drive is simple. Getting it to read any games is impossible...if you don't know how to flash the drive. You can't simply replace the drive (even with the same model) and be done with it. You can, however, do a pot-tweak on the laser. All you need is a multimeter ($2 at Harbor Frieght) and a tiny flathead screwdriver, or even your fingernail in a pinch. While I've resurrected other electronics with cleaning the laser lens, I've never seen this work for a 360.

If pot-tweaking doesn't fix it, then just replace the laser. No sense spending $30 on a whole drive when you can get a laser on eBay for $5. Open up the console and pull the drive. Look on the bottom of the laser for the number for Toshiba and Hitachi drives. Should be either H63 or H67. BenQ lasers are all the same. There's also a small chance that the magnet has malfunctioned on the drive spindle. The good news is that any of these issues are incredibly cheap and ridiculously easy to fix.

I ordered a replacement drive off ebay for about $30 Opened up the drive took the board out of the old and put in the new and boom It works fine. However After the money I have spent trying to fix our 3 RROD 360's I would just buy the slim and move on. 2 are still working and one is for parts.
But the replacement of the dvd drive with exchange of the board with the firmware on it was really rather easy, but no one wants to open up a new Disk drive and void the warranty day one.

DVD drive board swapping is easy with Toshiba/Samsung/Hitachi drives.

Very difficult with BenQ/LiteOn if you're not proficient with soldering.

this isn't really a problem, but i just had a quick question. i picked up a new Slim a few days ago, because a woman at work wanted to buy my old Elite for her son, and when i was hooking everything up i noticed that my optical digital cable doesn't really feel secure in the back of the system at all. it sounds fine and all, but it just doesn't click and somewhat lock like it does when you plug it into the back of a cable box, receiver, ect. is that how it's supposed to be?

I did a search and did not find an answer. Please let me know if this is posted in the wrong thread?

Issue: How can I have both 360 outputs (HDMI and Component Breakout) connected simultaneously and use either one when I want?

Configuration: HT is my great room and the Xbox is installed there. It has the Kenect module and the space for play. My 2004 Mits Alpha (82913) is the video out for all inputs to my Yamaha A/V receiver (HTR-5940) which is my switcher. The Mits does not have HDMI and I use the Yam Component Monitor out for the feed to the Mits. Two other DirecTV DVR's complete the array. All audio goes to the Yam as digital via two fiber and one RCA plug.

Next to the great room is my Den/Office/PC. I have an AVER (027) PCIe capture card install there. The PC has a nVidia 260 dual DVI output video card connected to my 24" Viewsonic (VX2433) and the other back thru the wall to the Mits' DVI (Monolink) port.
I have one of the DVR's HDMI outputs cabled (thru the wall) to that card and it works great. Now, I can watch DirecTV in there without another receiver. Then I had a thought; why not also connect the 360 with a Monoprice switch box and play Non-Kinect games in the Den.

Problem: Alas, no JOY! If I connect both of the 360 outputs simultaneously, the Aver card does NOT see the HDMI signal properly-heavy intermittence when the 360's display autosense in ON. This is true with or without the switch in the circuit. If I just use the HDMI cable, the feed is perfect. But, now I have No input from the component to use on the Mits big screen. If I turn display autosense OFF and set it to 1080i and have both connects connected, the HDMI feed is perfect in the Den and a blue screen on the Mits!

I know this is very wordy, sorry. Also, I can just move the box for Den game play-takes all of 5 minutes. Or, I can just switch the Xbox feeds. But, where's the challenge in that??????????? Ha.

When you say the xbox got knocked, I assume you meant it was bumped or fell or something like that. If it was a brand new game, you could try taking it back to the store and exchanging it for the same game. Just tell them it won't play.

As for making back up copies, you could install the game onto your Xbox HD, but you'll still have to insert the disc into the player to play the game. It makes for quicker bootup and a quieter Xbox.

If you wanted to make a real backup copy on a new disc that would require you to mod the Xbox, which would most likely cause you to get banned from Live, if you use it. I found the following website on that subject, it seems to have the most up to date information. Everything else I found was years old.

Do you know if HDMI active prevents analog audio being hot?

I don't know if this will help since I don't know what your analog connector looks like but thought I'd post it just in case. With my old Xbox I wasn't able to connect HDMI and optical at the same time because the cover on the audio connector was too large to connect the HDMI. I found a way around it by taking apart the casing around the audio connector. It was real easy to do and everything worked out great.

I had an issue with the optical audio cable on my new slim as well. The outer case on the slim has a round opening around the optical socket, my cable has a big fat square shaped connector. It wouldn't even go into the plug, so I had to round the corners off with a dremel. Yours maybe is big enough to get through the hole but is getting hung up before making it 100% of the way in?

jeff
i thought it made it all the way in, since i was getting digital audio. anyway, i took the optical cable into a local BB and tried it on their display slim, and it definitely clicked and locked and was more secure than my slim, so i exchanged it for a new slim and the new one secures it better than the old one. it actually worked out for the better though, because when i got the original slim there were no holiday bundles available and when i exchanged it they only had holiday bundles, so they let me exchange it for a holiday bundle...

it's like darklordjames said though, with toslink different manufacturers have different tolerances, and if you tried to plug the same cable in 10 toslink ports it's not going to fit exactly the same in all of them...

i got a 4g slim on black friday and a 250g hard drive for it. out of the box ive been having disc read issues. even games installed on the hard drive have disc read errors pop up after a freeze in game. i ultimately tested this by purchasing bfbc2 off of the marketplace and i get these disc read errors, "make sure the disc is clean" yadda yadda. point is, my games, accessories and console is brand new. i really dont know whats going on or what to do about it. can anyone shed some light?

So you've been having this problem since the gitgo and you haven't taken it back for an exchange or called MS support? I'm assuming you didn't get an extended warranty either. It's probably too late now as most stores have a 30-day policy for returns but you could give it a try. Sounds like it's a problem with the dvd player or laser. It's under warranty so if you can't get a store to exchange it for you, call MS support, no use fooling around with it.

well i passed amazons return policy because i was waiting on my new tv to arrive. i got burglarized in mid november. i replaced everything i lost and the tv was the last to arrive about three weeks after i replaced my 360 and games. when i fired it up, halo reach was the first game i tried and it did not recognize the disc. i sent that back to microsoft for replacement as that is a widespread problem with the slim consoles. other games i replaced ive been playing and have had disc read errors. as ive said before, i purchased bfbc2 on the marketplace, which is a pure hard drive experience and am still getting disk read errors. i understand the console periodically checks the disc drive for activity. my errors occur when automatic game saves take place. this leads me to believe that the problem is torn between the hard drive and the disc drive. i will try to get the disk drive straight by air cleaning it and reattach the hard drive. ill report back with results since no one seems to have this problem. sucks being the ginea pig.

Well, was playing a game and all of a sudden I got red streaks all over the screen. I thought I'd power cycle the thing, but I can hear it boot up, but no video.

No RROD on it (yet), but is it even worth checking to see if it's my TV input (I have it hooked up with VGA right now and would have to dig through my basement to find the original component cable), or is it safe to assume it's the box?

I definitely have an older one....this is my second XBOX after the first one RROD'd on me, and that was way back before they extended the warranty to 3 years. In fact, I just went to XBOX Live and my standard warranty expired on Dec 28, 2007 and it's not eligible for repair? Or do I not get the 3 years because this is a replacement unit from my first RROD?

**sigh** Although I suppose 2 consoles in 5 years is not that bad.

Thankfully I have Fallout 3 and Uncharted 2 for the PS3 sitting here unopened, and I never did finish Mario Galaxy on the Wii (and I have Mario Galaxy 2 here as well). That'll keep me covered until I get together the cash for a new XBOX.

No video is a lead-in to RRoD, particularly when preceded by graphic failure as you described. MS isn't going to fix this one for you, given the date you posted. I'd recommend doing LawDawg's (original, not "shimtastic") X-Clamp repair. Costs about $10 and should buy you 6-18+ more months, depending on how well you do the repair and how lucky you are.

In the meantime, I can't think of a better way to spend your time than playing Uncharted 2 and Fallout 3. Those are two of THE BEST games ever made on any console. :)

I'm going to suggest you at least give MS a call. Who knows, they might just fix it for you for free.
The extended 3 year warranty was added after your xbox got the RROD but it started from the date you purchased it. At least that's they way it worked when mine went.

UPDATE.

i air cleaned the disk drive from the outside of the console. detached the hard drive and air cleaned that out too. none worked. and im not suprised as its a brand new console and hard drive.

what i did do was start saving games to the internal memory and bypassing the hard drive. i still download games to the hard drive and play off of them but i noticed the bulk of my freezes were occuring at times when auto save attempts were being made. on day one this is working for now. we'll see how long it holds out.

Ok, I am going to attempt this fix. I am following this PDF (http://copronymous.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/fix-for-the-3rlod.pdf), which from research is the best, most detailed one regarding his fix.

Technically, I am not RROD yet (just no video), so a little concerned about step 7 which relies on lights. Guess I assume without the fans on, I'll get the 2 red lights once it overheats (and fixes the solder joints).

Well, off to Lowes I go. I have all the parts but the nylon washers. Figures. Wish me luck!

EDIT: Well, apparently I've made it through 38 years of life without buying a #8 torx drive. That's the first time in like a decade I've needed a tool I don't have. And Lowe's is closed! Guess I'm stuck til tomorrow. The wife is thrilled I have xbox parts all over the kitchen table :)

The PDF you show is the exact fix you should be using.

Yes, as you have no error (yet) just wait for it to show 2 red lights.

T-8 Torx is not a common tool to need...and now I have 12 of them.

Take a $100 bill out of your pocket and show it to the wife. Tell her that's exactly how much you'll be saving by doing the fix yourself over sending it to MS. That should change her attitude in a hurry. :D

If you have any issues or questions on the repair, you can either ask here or shoot me a PM. Good luck!

Well, it seems to be working. I must've broken a transistor off the motherboard cause I found one laying on the table but couldn't figure out where it went (there' about 250 on the board, and I couldn't find a missing space).

But put it back together anyways, and it appears to be working ok. I did get a small video glitch where I got some blue streaks for a few seconds and they went away and haven't seen them since.

Hopefully it holds for awhile

Just bought a new xbox 360 slim with kinect on Friday. Today when I was gone the wife was going to play Dance Central and she dropped the game box on the open tray and now it will no longer close. I've tried wiggling the tray, but can't get it to go back in. It looks like the piece that comes up to keep the disc in place gets in the way. Anyone had any success with something like this. I'm not sure if Best Buy would exchange or not, and really don't want to go a month without it by sending to Microsoft.

Can you elaborate on the part highlighted? Sort of hard to tell exactly what part you mean.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but I can't find the answer in the manual and 3 of us couldn't figure it out. How do you choose to play 2-player mode or multi player mode? Every time we choose the mode we want, it asks us to sign out player 1 or create avatar, etc. We've tried all the options and nothing works! Can you please tell me what we need to do to play together?

Thank you!

I have a question about HDCP. I have a Sony receiver (is-1000) that has an xbox 360 connected to it and from the receiver outputs an hdmi cable to my Samsung television (LN52A850). What I'm curious about is that when the xbox 360 is displaye on the tv the Sony receiver doesn't light up saying that it's connected through hdmi all the time. After some reading I found it was because it has to be an HDCP compliant device for it to light up. So is the xbox 360 to blame? How do I fix this problem? I know it's not the receiver or the television because when I want to play a blu-ray I go to the main menu of the receiver and the light always turns on. In my opinion it's got to be the xbox but is there a way to fix this?
