--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have a 1080i only (i.e., no 720p) TV (Toshiba 50HX81). The picture from my xbox360 is shifted up and to the right a little - enough to cut off the tops of the dashbard titles and some game elements (portion of HUD in NFS:MW). The picture quality is awesome, just slightly shifted.

BTW, HD programming from my cable box (sharing the same inout as both go through my reciever) does not have this problem - all top and bottom news and sports tickers appear to be exactly where they should.

SOWK

This can be a common problem with Analog inputs (and digital for that matter. :) ) called overscan. It "may" actually not be shifted at all. there is usually less important info (if any in the Bottom or left side of games.)
But here are a couple things to check...

On the Componet Card Cord check to make sure the Switch is in the HDTV position.

Second Check the far right Blade on the Dashboard. Go to System Video Options.
Make sure that 1080i is selected. and (if avail. Widescreen is selected.)

Also some games have a built in Screen Centering Configuration in there option menus. See if there is any in the games you play!

Next if this still doesn't help, plug the Xbox 360 Directly into the TV's 1080i Input. and test this way. If it still happens, and you know a friend with a 360. Have them bring it over and test with theirs. If it fixes it, tell them there is something really cool for them to see outside, and swap the 360's around. lol.

Tell me what you haved tryed, and if anything has worked for you.

Edit - Also if the TV has VGA input, that is probably your best bet to get the best picture, and a centered image.

I've been waiting for a thread like this! Whenever I try to force my 360 into 720p on my Sony XBR 57 (forget the exact model number, but I can get it if it helps) the screen will crawl upwards about 6 inches, then shift back down to the bottom and start again. Running in 1080i is fine. I have tried my regular xbox in 720p and have had no problems. Any suggestions?

SOWK
12-02-05, 05:34 PM
This may be a problem with the output of the 360 at 720P then, It seems like the Sony you own can't sync up properly to the 720P signal the Xbox 360 is sending out. You can try some if not all the solutions I provided above to goodkd. Again if your TV has VGA, it may help fix the problem. I don't want to just throw out BUY VGA to everyone. But I know my friend with similar issue that were resolved by this cable. You might want to try the 2nd or third Componet Input if your TV has it. You have an XBR, I assume it is a RPTV. is this correct?

1080i Will actually look better anyhow. I have a friend with a Sony RPTV (not XBR), and his syncs properly to 720P, and 1080i. 1080i is most defiantly a cleaner picture.

Some TV's allow for Hz sync control, not many, but if your TV has one, you can play with some of these settings. Not really recommended. and I have no test Hz to check with other then 60htz.

When I hit the guide button while playing a game amenu slides in from the left side of the screen. From there I hit Y to bring up the dashboard. At this point a different screen slides in from the right which says all unsaved game data....yada yada yada, "Are you sure you want to exit the game" (or whatever)......Yes or no.

When I hit "yes" the menu is freezing, and not sliding back in, and the dashboard doesn't come up. The only remedy is to turn the power off on the console itself.

This happens probably once every 10 times I do it, but it is really annoying. I mean this is brand new, and it should work 100% all the way.

1) Has anyone else had these issues.

2) I think I'm gonna send it back to them and either have them find and fix the bug or give me a new one.

3) Any advice?

Is this with PGR 3 or all games???

There is a link on how to lock up the Xbox360, and going into dashboard mode in PGR 3 is one of them.

Link...

Hmmm I check the time on my blades in PGR3 during the load screen all the time and all I ever get is a slight delay (that attached article says press the guide button during the loading screen.) I've frozen up twice after finishing an event, but that's twice in about fifteen hours of gameplay.

I go into the guide and change music all the time while pgr3 is loading (online races and offline) and have never experienced any problems whatsoever. the first time i tried, i wasn't actually expecting it to work and was impressed at how smoothly it opens.

I had it lock up twice, but only when I am trying to play with the Gui (Graphical User Interface) while PGR 3 was running. I will just not us the dashboard while playing PGR3.

A friend has the Pelican component video cables and can't get his digital audio to work. He only gets analog output. He says that he's certain that his receiver is setup corretly as he's using the same optical cable that came from his orig. Xbox. We also walked through his audio setup tab and all seems OK. Anyone have any suggestions? TIA

Edit: I've just read a number of others with the same issue. Sounds like the Pelican adapter is flaky at best.

When the Xbox 360 is on, Does the red light inside the opical connector light up? If not there is a big problem.

Yes. He confirmed that the red light can be seen at the adapter and also at the receiver end of the cable when it's connected.

Yes. He confirmed that the red light can be seen at the adapter and also at the receiver end of the cable when it's connected.

Is he seting up the receiver correctly? ex. setup DVD to use Optical 1 input. Set the Xbox 360 to Dobly Digital in the System Blade, for digital out, and set the receiver to DVD input. If that doesn't help you may need a new Componet cord.

Xbox 360 is sitting in box until Christmas. (Yes, I know, but that's the deal). Anyway, I have a couple of questions in order to prepare to set it up. I am connecting it to a Syntax 37" LCD HDTV and have a Samsung Ht-WP38 Home theater receiver & speakers.

1) VIDEO: My understanding is that the Xbox 360 comes with HD component cables. Why, then, do they sell separate component cables for the 360? Do I need them or are the supplied cables adequate?

2) AUDIO: The Samsung home theater system has a optical digital input. I assume, the 360 has an optical out, right? So I connect the optical out from the 360 to the optical in on the receiver in order to get the 5.1 audio. But what about the LCD display? I would also like to hear the 5.1 audio from OTA HD broadcasts, so how would I be able to get both the Xbox and the LCD's audio connected so I could hear 5.1 on both devices?

Thanks in advance for your help.

VIDEO... If you got the Premium Pack, then you wount need to purchase any of componet cables. (aka. the Premium pack comes with the Componet, the Basic does not.) So if you have the basic, then yes, you would want to pick up the componet or VGA adaptor for your HDTV.

SOUND... The Optical out is on the same cord as the video, nearest to the Console. For the second part of your Question... If your tv has Digital Cox or Optical out, then yes you can, as long as you have another input on your receiver that you can use.

My 360 "freezes" or locks up from time to time while playing COD2. When this happens the only thing I can do is power the unit off. I will be in the middle of a mission and the screen freezes and the audio is gone.

Once I power the unit off and restart I am back up running fine again....

Any ideas???

I had my 360 lock up after playing Kameo for about 2 hours. The main issue is not the freeze itself, but the fact that it corrupted my saved game data. The freeze occurred during a save itself. Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

When I manage my saved data from the dashboard it says that the data may be recoverable, but while I am in Kameo I receive a message stating that the data must be deleted.

I usually like autosaves in games, but not if it will corrupt my data ;) . I've had to start over again from square one  .

SOWK, thanks for this thread and helping everyone out. Just maybe you can offer me some help.
I currently have a Panasonic AE900U pj and I *had* it connected via component cables joined by two sets of couplers and finally, a Pelican system selector switch. A couple of times while using the 360 my Projector lost the signal and went to the blue screen. I could still hear sound from my speakers.
This also happened once with my DVD player. So I bypassed the Pelican switch and it happened again. I know it isn't the 360 because it happened with the DVD player and now I know it isn't necessarily the switch.
What I'm wondering is if this could now be cable, or coupler related.
Here's how I have it & willing to make the changes but only if someone is pretty sure it's necessary.
I have a set of high quality cables running from the component input on the PJ through my ceiling connected by a set of couplers to another good set of cables. This runs the rest of the way through the ceiling to a wall plate, which is ashamedly, a standard AV wallplate (red, yellow, white composite).
Now the picture quality looks good enough for me not to complain but *could* this be the cause for the signal loss to the projector? If so, how likely?
I hate to invest in 50 feet of cable for nothing.

Thanks.

Possibly overheating, I have not had a single problem with COD2 on my Xbox 360. Try this for a week... Pull both the Xbox 360 and the Power supply away from all you current equipment. leave the XBOX 360 on for a while, then go play COD2 for a bit. If it is not happening with it pulled away from the other equipment, it is a overheating issue. Also I heard lifting the Power Supply off the floor for full ventilation helps as well. Other then that - are you trying to go into the Dashboard, or just playing the game.

I have freeze issues and am sending mine in for repair/replacement. It's only when I access those vertically sliding gray menus that come up when you hit the guide button, and not all the time. Bu I refuse to "put up" with this **** after paying all the money. I'm sure that MS will be helpful. I just figured that I mize well just get it doen and get it right.

My system also seems to run hot. The game discs ar ehot when they come out of the tray. Maybe thats normal, but it seems too hot.

This freezing issue is pretty widespread, and if it hasn't happened to you it's probably only a matter of time. Most people will probably just deal with having to power off and restart their console once a day when it freezes, but I refuse to.

Ok... I might be able to help. First I wouldn't use a standard AV wallplate. It may or may not have something to do with the Ohms impedance of the jacks. Video is at 75Ohm, and Analog Audio is at another Ohm impedance. If possible plug Directly into one of your cables. (uses the couplers to do this.) And write back and tell me if that fixes it.

Unfortunately, if there is an overheating issue, it's not caused by my placement or misuse of the system (not that you stated as much). It is by itself the bottom shelf of my rack (obviously becuase heat rises) with plenty of vintalation. I can try to clean the hard drive connector, but I don't believe that is the culprate. I have never removed it, so the connectors should be free of any obstruction, unless MS shipped it in a damages state. I believe the data corruption was the result of the freeze occuring during a save action, not a bad connection. Thanks for the advice though :)

You may be right about the overheating... The freezes are happening in the middle of gameplay - usually an hour or more in. I have the 360 horizontally on the top glass shelf of my "open" DLP stand - it has very good air flow, but the adapter is on the wood floor and it makes a "whining" noise from time to time that a good bang on the floor stops.

I will try pulling it out of the stand tonight and letting it run all night.

I have a strange problem, well, not really a problem, but something that’s a little irritating. I have a H/K AVR 635 and an Infocus 4805. The Xbox 360 is hooked up to the 635 using a component cable, and the resolution is set to 720p.

The picture is very sharp, but there are sometimes wave like things moving down the whole screen. This is most noticeable in the 360 menus. When I switch to a different output, like for example Video 2, on the 635 and back again to Video 1 (360), the waves disappear completely. So, it’s not a big problem, but it’s a bit annoying. I think it’s the 635, maybe a setting, but I’m not sure. I also use a DVD player on the same component cable.

What could be causing this?

Help is much appreciated.

BTW
The Xbox 360 is great, and I’m amazed how good the picture is on my 90” screen. Check out Geometry Wars, it's a blast! I love the menu system and the Live Marketplace. I only have COD2, but I'm planning to buy Kameo and PGR3.

I had the problem with the original XBOX when just playing DVD's. I have a Benq 8700 projector.

I think this is called "vertical banding". I may be wrong, but I believe the problem has to do with the refresh rate of the source and the display device not syncing up or something. If you have a couple of components connected through the connection and using a switcher, try a direct connection.

I thought my cables I had initially were the cause of the problem (were cheap or too long).

Do a search on vertical banding (not in this gaming forum) and see what you come up with.

I'm aware of the VB problem, but I haven't seen it with my own eyes. I don't think this is VB, because the waves are going down the screen horisontally. I forgot to mention that I watched the Narnia trailer in 720p while the waves were there, and there was something very wrong with the picture. It looked like ghosting or something.

I wonder if this could have anything to do with the 635 not being able to switch from interlaced to progressive. In the Input menu of the 635, the Video Convertion is turned Off. I'm going to try and turn it on and see what happens.

DKaps

Actually, "vertical banding" only occurs (can occur) with LCD projectors, not DLPs like the 4805 and 8700 mentioned above.

This what I was really refering to.

But the Vertical banding issue I was not aware is only possible with LCD.

The key words Bookhouseboy used to discribe his problem was...

wave like things moving down the whole screen. (going down usally indicates Horizontal not vertical.) LOL

I have some weird issues over here too. I'll list my setup first off. I have a premium 360 hooked up to my 51' Sony RP CRT, and I have optical out going to my yamaha reciever. So far I have had quite a few freezes, most involving opening the side menu while in game (I am guessing this is software related). But I have also had alot of audio glitches, my sound will randomly cut out for just a second and I'm not too sure why...and when I play halo2 (emulated) for some reason when I am in a heavy gunfight, the sound will cut in and out :( I've also had some lag issues in Perfect Dark Zero (mission 5? I think, the one where you're escaping from the hideout in China or whatever) while playing co-op (splitscreen) with a friend, we got to the part where you blow up the wall and head outside for the hovercrafts, well, when I rushed out there (guys shooting me from every direction) my 360 starting lagging really badly, I'm not too sure why but I'm pretty concerned about this... I also had it freeze up once in single player mission (was only on for 20 mins max) I am thinking it is just this game, but I am not entirely sure.
Anyways, I am wondering if anyone else with digital output and HDTV (1080i) connection have had any of these problems? mainly the lagging problem in PDZ, but also the sound problems in Halo2.
Any info would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Not sure about you lag issue, could be bad programing, system not knowing what to do, or just trying to tell you not to run out in the middle of a gun fight while being shot at from every angle? lol. Does it happen for any other game? COD 2 / PGR 3... if you have either of these.

Sound for Halo2 it seems the audio emulation still needs work. I was playing DOA 3 and it sounds way different then when played on the Xbox 1.

Nothing wrong with your 360 while playing emulation. I'm not sure as to why it is locking up so much on you though. Check some of the previous posts I have done about overheating. Mine does too ( only twice with PGR3 using the guide button.)

I posted a link stating that you could possibly lock up the 360 by using the guide button in games. So I'm not really worried.

In regards to the overheating issues:

I've alternated between positioning my 360 vertically and horizontally on my open media rack, and there clearly seems to be a difference in operating temperature between the two positions. When upright, the 360 blows warm air out the back and runs without mishap. When positioned horizontally, the air from the fans is much hotter and I've had two random freezes. Needless to say, it's standing vertically now, and I've been without mishap since (knock on wood). *Note: never move the 360 while it's turned on!!! You'll scratch your disc!*

Just my two cents.

Vertical has been my most successful way of playing my 360 to. It is noisy either way, but less warm standing...

I had heard that there's a difference in heat between the two orientations, but I still keep mine horizontal. It really doesn't get all that hot, even with the glass door on my TV stand closed. Besides, I really don't have the space to stand the thing up. I'm actually kind of surprised that so many people do. Are you guys putting it next to your TV, on the floor, etc?

-SOWK
I haven't had any lag or freezing issues at all except with PDZ (all involving the guide button except for one whitch froze while in game) and I agree it is probably poor programming (the game was rushed afterall), I have however had a the sound cut out for just a fraction of a second while playing COD2 (the only other 360 game I own) and I am not quite sure what it is, it's nothing major, so at this time I'm not going to worry about it, if it continues with other titles, or gets worse, I will send it in, but right now MS is very busy and I'd like to keep my 360 for christmas holiday lol.

Ohh yeah, and as for heat issues, my console is vertical with tons of space, and my power supply has never been on the carpet, and has always had plenty of space, I then heard that 'elevating' your power supply with a box with no lid helps, so I have also done that, so heat should definately not be an issue.

Well, some guys... (and maybe some girs) are so horney that they will be willing to purchase if they can get some more pics of the person poseing. The age old fact that sex sells. Its human nature. If there was a ebay auction for a Xbox360 being sold and a hot girl "playing with it" I would at least look at it. lol

They probably feel more people will trust them if there is a girl involved in the selling of the product...I remember when "AUNT NUTSY" from ebay was ripping off everybody over ghettopoly games...And she was female!

Ok so here's the problem. GR2:SS just became BC yesterday and Im having some problems with the component cables. I have the original one that came with the xbox itself and I also bought a really nice one from BB (cant remember the name, but it was like psyco or something). Well when I finally started playing the game on the 360, it was in widescreen, and I could hear other people on the 360 talking about how good the graphics were. But to me it actually looked a little worse. So I backed out to the menu settings page and checked to see the display settings. It would let me select between normal and widescreen. It would even let me switch between 480p, 720p, and 1080i, but it also said that my cable was not set to to HDTV (you know on the original component cable it has a button you can slide from TV to HDTV. But since my cable is exclusively a component cable, it has not button to slide.

So then I hooked up my original component cable, and it said the HDTV setting was picked, but would not even let me access that setting to change it from widescreen to normal. But it did say it was already set to widescreen. So when I go to play the game it is has th ugly black bars on the side, oh yeah I have a 52" Tosh DLP widescreen. But the picture was actually clearer. And I dont know if this has anything to do with the cables, the settings or just the fact that the picture wasnt stretched over more surface area, blurring things a little?

So I just wanted to see if anyone has any ideas about what I can do to fix this, or if this is even a problem. What I really dont understand is why it shows up widescreen with the psyco cable, and not with the regular cable. They are both still component cables. So it cant just be the game that was having the problems. So I dont know.

Plug back in the regular Xbox Cables.
(make sure it is in the HDTV setting)

Unplug the system for about 2 minss.

Turn back on.

Go to the System setup blade.

Run initial setup once again.

Then go to the system blade again, and chg Res to 720P or 1080i.

See what looks better, and keep it there.

P.S. also in 720P or 1080i there should not be an option for widescreen. it should be on by default.

I have a XP Home PC and a Xbox 360 connected to my Linksys RT41P2-AT VoIP adapter.

I cannot get Media Connect to work. The PC sees the Xbox, but the Xbox says there is no PC available on the network.

If I plug the 360 into my second ethernet port on my PC, I can use the media connect just fine, but that hurts my online play, and requires that my PC be on to play on Live!

I've followed M$'s advice as best as I can, and have had the Linksys tech support trying to figure it out, but no one can. The only problem with the M$'s required open ports that I've had is with the UPnP framework. My adapter wants me to specify both a Ext. and an Int. port. For the UDP of 1900 I put both as the same and it took when I saved it, but with the 2869 TCP when I save it clears the port field.

Linksys had me set my PC and 360 IPs as static 192.168.15.10 and .11 respecively and I can still play on Live! that way with no problems, but still no Media Connect.

Can you help?

I would need personal access to your pc for this. If you want this weekend, you can turn off Firewall protection on your router, install a program called VNC for the day. I can get access to your pc from that, and help you with a solution. I have a background in computer networking, and maybe able to help. but this one is going to require some work.

Well that's a problem in itself. If I could turn off the router's firewall I would have done that already and let the Windows firewall do all the work instead. Unfortunately the router does not have that as an option.

I have successfully got connection between the Xbox 360 and my Win XP Pro system. Xbox via wireless to Netgear router, XP wired to said router. (BTW the router is NOT on the Xbox Live qualified list, it's a WGR614v5)

I can do slide shows of my JPEGs OK. (And the Xbox gets onto Xbox live just fine).

But...

I thought that I should be able to stream limited video (is it WMA only?) to the Xbox from the PC, but can't find how to do this. At some point I find a message which tells me that I'm using 811g and this could be a problem for streaming and I should switch to 811a (which I thought was the original REALLY slow one???)

But I just can't find a screen that would let me into the folders of the XP system to show a movie file. Any ideas?

Second question about installation. The Xbox gave me an 8 digit number and said I should go to pcsetup at the xbox website and it would ask me for this number at the PC end. It never did, but it finds the Xbox OK. Is this a problem (not asking for the number)? Back at the Xbox, it says I should leave the Xbox at this screen while I do the pcsetup. I did this, but even after pcsetup, this screen is a dead-end at the Xbox end. It can never go further (such as via the green button).

Finally, I tried doing the above setup on a second PC on my home LAN, but the Xbox can only see the first XP system. Should I be able to see both or is it limited to one only? The second PC can see the Xbox. I tried resetting the Win firewall on both by clicking that button.

PS I am well experienced with computers in general (over 40 years of computer experience), and Win XP in particular, but this is my first gaming console, so forgive me if I am asking naive questions!

The HDTV switch on the cable should help, make sure it is in the HDTV position.

You could also use VGA, to get 1:1 mapping. (VGA has no little switch on the cord.)

To get back to the resolutions tab...

Take out all games... (there is a way to do this with the game in)
boot up the X-box 360...
The dashboard comes up...
Far tab to the right...
Find Video Settings...

If Componet

480P
720P
1080I

If VGA

Set to your plasma's native resolution.

The weirdest one, which I haven't seen mentioned, is a graphical glitch that I've experienced in both the Madden 06 demo and the full version of Kameo.

Any ideas as to what is causing this? It is a weird series of bands that radiate out from a single point in the screen. In Kameo it was even more jumbled up (as if there were several of these things radiating from different places).

Well, I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with MSFT trying to describe what was in the photos I linked to in my earlier post.

Of course, there was nothing in their automated help system that addressed "crazy lines and colors cutting through the game image."

Even without the exact problem identified, they agreed to send out the box to have it shipped in and repaired.

Not only does it suck that I got a dud; however, I am on vacation until Jan. 3rd. Looks like that's when I should be getting my replacement console in the mail.

Same problem here. switching to standard tv(through the switch on the component cable) takes away the artefacts but it means that you are watching SD interlaced. In my quest to figure it out I did notice that home made copies (on a dvd r machine) did not exhibit these "lines", so it got me thinking that maybe it has to do with some sort of macrovision kicking in? Did you connect the 360 directly to the 900 or is it linked through a receiver (in my case through a rotel rsx1055).

It's connected directly to the projector (and so is my DVD-player). It's definitely due to the Xbox, not the PJ. Changing the 360s settings to 1080i/480i doesn't help either.
I'm confused: Are you playing these dvdr on the xbox or on the other machine? And what is macrovision (never heard of it).
Did anyone notice anything similar on a regular HDTV set or any other projector?

I got the box to ship back my 360 this morning and I've already packed it up and shipped it via DHL. It is due at the repair facility by noon tomorrow.

The MSFT rep I spoke to said that they ship repairs back out the same day they receive them. If that's the case, then I should get my repaired/new console by Saturday.

Otherwise, it will be delayed due to the holidays since DHL doesn't deliver on Monday.

Once I get the console back, I think I will shell out the $50 for the 2-year service plan .

Sorry for the confusion: dvdr (recorded on a dvdr machine) played on 360 seems to be artefact free. And that's also the reason why I was thinking about Macrovision: in general, it's a copy protect system incorporated in the signal of regular dvd's. If the system "suspects"that a recording machine is connected tot the other end of the signal, several artefacts are being introduced to the picture, resulting in a unwatchable picture (therefore making a copy virtually impossible). To my knowledge home made dvd's don't incorporate this system.

I noticed the same artefacts playing a DVD that came with the UK's 'Official Xbox360 Magazine'. I doubt they would incorporate Macrovision on that, but you never know. If it was Macrovision, then people using other HDTVs or projectors should be seeing it as well. Anyone?
I'll be playing around with some different DVDs (R/RW/...) and settings on the PJ. I'll let you know what I come up with...

It's a pity cause the image is so much sharper than my regular DVD-player :(

Anyone know if you can remove a BC patch once it's applied? My 360 is not yet on a LAN so I downloaded the December patch, burned it to CD and installed it manually.

Now, Halo will only display at a 4:3 aspect ratio, where before it would display at 16:9. I run my 360 at 1080i and tried changing it to 720p but it's still the same.

Any ideas?

Quick question, currently I have samsung hdbox, w/xbox attached via component to inputs on sat box. Samsung box is set to put out at 1080i (up converts dvd's and games?).
Getting xbox 360, should I connect in the same manner, or should I upgrade to mpeg4 equipment (which does not have input on box for other connections, to up convert other inputs), and attach 360 directly to TV, my understanding is this will put games out in HD, but only 480p for movies.
Thank you for any help you guys can provide, Merry Xmas!

Hi,
I just got my (son's) 360 today, and connected to my Dwin Transcanner/ HDP-500
projector. Set XBOX output to 1080i and display quality was passable while gaming. However, when I attempted to play a DVD for my younger son (Bad News Bears 2 /Widescreen) the whole setup sort of freaked out, and despite experimenting with all possible settings all I was able to get was a very low grade horizontally compressed image, looked like 480i at best, but most maddening thing was that the screen format was all wrong, and it was totally
impossible to correct it. I then tried another DVD, and it had all kinds of issues during the start up phase, but correctly displayed the DVD once the movie itself
started....
Any thoughts?
thanks

I found out some more about the Xbox 360s DVD-player:
In the on-screen menu of the Panasonic PT-AE900 it actually says what input it gets. So when my Xbox 360 Display is set to 720p it puts out the following signals (I live in Belgium, Europe - we have PAL):

Games: 720p
DVD: 576p

With the switch on the Xbox360's HD cable set to SD, you get:

DVD: 575i

And as stated above, the artefacts disappear. So they must be due to the Panny's internal scaler/de-interlacer not being able to handle 576p. I guess there's not so much you can do about that. Changing the Panny's settings (Cinema Reality, NR,...) doesn't help one bit.
Changing the Xbox360s Display settings to 480p or 1080i doesn't help either: it keeps putting out a 576p DVD-signal. Maybe I can sue M$ for that and get really rich and buy a nice HD-DVD player. I guess that won't happen though, cause I reckon it's the actual DVD disc that determines the signal. PAL = 576 lines any which way you turn it. I'll try and find me an NTSC (480 lines) DVD to prove my point here.
Maybe this is why we don't see any artefacts on DVDr as well.
One thing I still don't understand though is that the artefacts aren't on every (PAL) DVD I play: most of them have it, some of them don't.

Oh well, I guess I'll be using my crappy Sony-DVD player in the end: there's not that much difference with 576i.

If there's one thing I've learned from all this, it's that progressive vs interlaced really does make a BIG difference, especially when you blow your image up to a 100 inch diagonal.

I did a quick search and didn't come up with anyone having this problem in this thread. Every once in a while the 360 just loses the connection with Xbox Live. The only way to get it back is to power off and on again.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Do you use a router? Is your router Xbox-live certified? It's possible the NAT is expiring on the router prematurely, causing the connection to drop. If you're doing PPPOE this may be "normal" behavior for your connection as well. Without more details, it's hard to be sure.

Im having a weird problem. Im running my 360 through the optical out on the component cable that came with the system. I have sound and its true 5.1 but im not getting any low frequencies. If I play music or games I dont get any frequencies going through the LFE mix. Also if I turn it to 2 ch and still go through the optical I dont get any lows either. I checked my amp with my dvd player and its fine. Im assuming its my amp but just wondered if anyone else had any problem like this? oh yeah and ive already tried 2 different optical cables as well. I have:
Denon 3806
Sammy 1080p DLP

Artison Speakers

I only have two tower speakers but they have the center channel in each of them so I actually have a 3.1 setup. I only can get sound coming out of the right tower (right and right center to clarify) I haven't tried optical, I am only using the red and white stereo connects. I have tried both audio setups, digital and analog - neither seems to correct the problem.

Anyone got any clues? This is my second box - 1st one I had to ship back due to freezing. The box works great - I think I am just confused on my setup.... :( :(

I am sure that these places should be dark but not so much that you cannot see the enemy. I was wondering if I should just adjust the brightness levels or if there is some other fix. ..here's a fix for this problem. Make sure your set your speakers to "small" in your receiver set-up menu. If they're set to "large" you won't have the proper amount of bass routed to your sub. I also have a question for you folks. My live connection is almost always initially dropped when i try to connect for the first time in a game lobby. I have to re-sign back in and then it's fine. Any ideas why that initial drop could be happening? I have a dlink router and a hawking broadband booster. I never had any problems usung the same set-up for xbox 1. Thanks in advance.

Just curious if anybody else has heard anything similar.

well I just got my 360 right before Christmas, but regret to inform I have the freezing issues too!! Two types:
1- when I go to save a file it freezes and locks up and all I can do is restart losing my unsaved progress! and with THAW it actually corrupts the file completely!!!
2- just plain freezes up out of nowhere. It happens at least 1 time evry time I play.

I have the 1 year warranty with EB so I know I could just exchange it for a new one, but was gonna wait a bit to hopefully get a later model that doesn't have this problem. This is ridiculous! any more ideas or news??? thanks

FWIW - I bought two optical cables (different lengths) prior to my 360 arriving, not being sure of final placement.

The cables were cheap ones ($7), but different manufacture. One (3ft) fits VERY snugly, the other (10ft) hinted that it wanted to fall out, and it did that once when I was moving stuff around. The snug one just feels really good as it snaps in. The other is, well, vague. So clearly, there is variance in plugs, but I would not blame the 360 for being off-spec. They came from mycableshop.com

Edit - I had the cables reversed, the 3ft is snug

Hi there to all the helpful folks on this board,

So, I've recently moved up to the 360, but am experiencing some frustrating problems streaming audio from my Windows XP computer using Media Connect.

I have my CD collection stored on this PC as .WAV files. I am connected to the PC just fine. I can see pictures, and stream SOME of my music. But here's the weird part. For whatever reason, the 360 will only play about half (or less) of the 3000 songs I have on the hard drive. The playlist on the 360 will display each and every song, but when you try to click on a song to play it, it displays the red circle with a slash through it on the song title, and immediately skips to the next song that will play.

This behaviour is pretty consistent. I've gone through pretty much the entire playlist, and it seems that newer CDs I ripped to the hard drive have the most problems. It also seems that songs won't play on a CD by CD basis. In other words, entire CDs worth of ripped tracks won't play, not one song from these CDs will play. Even though this seems mostly limited to newer stuff, there are older CDs on the drive that suffer this problem as well.

I'm getting concerned that this relates to some crazy DRM protection scheme from Microsoft. Rest assured, every single track on this hard drive has been ripped from a CD that I purchased, it just concerns me that newer CDs seem to be the ones that won't play.

Anyway, that covers my initial question. I have some other questions about music streaming, but to decrease the book-size length of this post I'll ask 'em later.

Thanks in advance for any help, it is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Jeb

So it was at some angle between horizontal and vertical?

No I recently swiched it from horizontal to vertical because the new hdtv takes up more room so it fits better that way that is all I did different and as far as I know it is completely vertical but someone told me it maybe because the shelf is not level, but I know it was leveled when it was installed and to my eyes it looks level not sure what the problem is.

This is the responds I got from someone on the xbox forum and it seems to make sense:

Okay, it isn't his batteries. He's talking about the CONSOLE, not the controller, and he's saying that only lights 1 and 2 are alternating.

Anlyzer52, inside of the Xbox 360, there is basically a small ball/weight that tells the console if it is horizontal or vertical. This allows the console to re-orient the ring of light, so that the upper left quadrant is always controller 1. If you want to see what I mean, TAKE ANY DISC OUT OF THE XBOX (moving console with disc in can ruin the disc and shorten the life of your console), leave it turned on, plug in a controller (or turn on a wireless one, and flip the console from horizontal to vertical. You'll see that the ring of light re-orients itself.

The thing you are seing is basically that little ball/weight being caught, and giving an imprecise reading to the console. My console did this for a while, too. Make sure that your console is on a completely level surface. Also, I've noticed that a console that is horizontal never has this problem. Now, this is a really superficial problem, but if you want to send it in for repairs (I wouldn't), you can call tech support for a replacement (not worth it to me).

Not sure if this has been asked! Does the 360 have a limit to the amount of files you can get through Media Connect?

The reason I ask? When I go to my pictures on the 360, some of my picture folders don't show up. Their in my shared folder on the PC but not on the 360. All my pictures are in the "My Picture" folder with lots of subfolders for each day I saved pictures from my camera!

On the same hand. I took some new pictures and saved them to my PC and those showed up on the 360.

DOES ANYONE ELSE NOTICE THIS? DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM IS?

I just purchased the XBOX 360 and now have a few issues I need resolved. The XBOX is hooked up directly to my HDTV along with the sound. However, I do not have the HDTV connected to my receiver (Cable box - receiver). So I have no 5.1 sound when playing. Any configuration suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm new to the whole wireless router thing, so any suggestions would be appreciated...I plan to purchase a wireless router for XBOX Live. Thank you for any replies

If you have it hooked directly to the tv and the tv has 5.1 there is no reason why you should not have the digital sound unless you have something set wrong on the TV. You can also check the settings in the 360 but I believe from the factory it is set for 5.1 doby digital.

Where is the 5.1 surround port located to attach a toslink Optical cable? I'm not at home, so I can't look.

For 5.1 surround:

1) Connect the 360 to a receiver that feeds your 6 surround speakers via a toslink or a digital coaxial cable (either one will deliver good quality digital transfer to your receiver from the 360, but toslink (aka optical) is preffered.)

2) Set the receiver input to digital/coxial.

3) Set the 360 sound option to 5.1 dolby digital (undre the systems tab in the dashboard).

4) Enjoy! :D

I recently purchased an Onkyo TXNR1000 receiver and very recently, the new Hitachi HDPJ52 720p projector.

I just got my premium x-box 360 the other day and hooked it up using the supplied component cables and a monster optical cable.

The 360 is ran into my onkyo receiver using component/optical, and is then output through hdmi to my projector.

I first set the 360 to 720p and put in call of duty. As soon as the game makers intro screen came up, the projector temporarily lost its signal then came right back on to finish showing the rest of the company's intro. Right after, the Call of Duty game video comes on and shows a bunch of game rendered scenes before going into the game menu. The entire video played perfectly with no problems. As soon as the game menu came on after the video, I only saw it for a split second before the signal was lost again. The exact same thing happened with perfect dark and Project Gotham. I can only see the videos and when its time to use the game's menus, it loses its signal.

I switched the 360 to 480p and 1080i, both work perfectly with no loss of video.

I just can't figure this out. When trying to access video settings on the projector, if the video is lost on the screen the projector acts as if there is no HDMI port as all the menu selections for HDMI are grayed out and not accessible.

It may be because the 360 does not support HDMI right now (maybe in the future), so it could be cause some sort of wierd conflict. This is just a guess not positive. If you can hook up the 360 to the projector through the component cables it was supplied with and see if you still have the same problem.

I hooked the 360 to the projector using the supplied component cable and another 12 feet of monster component cables i already had. The projector worked fine at 720p with no problems.

I then ran the component cables through the receiver and went component out to the projector. No problems except for one. There is some weird ghosting when going through the receiver. It is most noticeable on text and there are about 4 or 5 ghost images of every letter. Oddly enough, it is not so bad that it makes it unreadable, in fact, i am surprised at how clear the image still is with the weird ghosting.

well, i guess it was just the input on the back of my receiver as i switched to one of the other inputs and things work fine now.

Did you make sure that you hooked the cables up to the prior color and that the switch on the 360 cable is set to HDTV no Tv. It is located near the bottom end of the cord were it plugs into the xbox.

Hey everyone - weird problem and Xbox support has been zero help. I'm running my 360 with a Harmony 360 remote, which is the only thing not listed in my sig. For the second time, I've had my console start up running at 480i instead of 720p, which is what it's set to. I've had my system since early January and this has not been a problem until last week. When I called tech support, the nice girl went through all her troubleshooting steps and finally got to "Are you sure you have an HDTV?" Infuriating. At any rate, she put me on hold and came back, had me power the system down and hold down RT+Y (or press it repeatedly - I have no idea which one did the trick) and the system was supposed to power back on but it didn't. When I powered it back on manually, everything was back to normal and it worked fine for a week - until now. It's back again, and no RT+Y is fixing it. Before I waste an hour of my life on hold with Xbox support, has anyone had this problem and found a fix?

Edit: after doing a little troubleshooting, it looks like the AV cable is bad. HDTV settings are saying that the cable is not set for HDTV, which it is, so MS is sending me a new cable...

ok, i have a problem, everytime i try to set the HDTV settings to 720p or higher, it seems to reset to regular resolution. IT WILL NOT SAVE the settings. My projector can support all the resolutions, so i dont know what gives. I can actually see it for a second on the projector, but then it resets.

Does it do it with 480p also? If so, you may have a bad AV cable as it appears I do. Look in your Display settings. Does it say something like your cable isn't set for HDTV?

I hate to ask the obvious; however, do you have HDTV selected on the AV dongle itself?

If so, then it maybe you have a bad AV cable. I'm just guessing, though.

Heh... of course. Like I said, I've been running the system for a month with no problems until now. I'm not sure what the fellow's problem is who posted before me, but tonight my 360 started going nuts. It would restart in the middle of something, and then it started up in 720p mode. I switched out, watched some TV for a while, and started it back up, and it's right back at 480i. MS is sending me a new cable, but the system is acting quite strange and I'm not sure how much that will help...

Are you playing regular Xbox games or 360 games? When i play Halo 2 i know it will skip around sometimes, gets a little pixelated for a second, the goes back to normal. I think it's some sort of up conversion issue, not to concerned though cause regular xbox games are so 2005... :p

Ok, here's my setup: Toshiba 52HM95(DLP RP), Xbox 360 connected w/component directly to TV also using an optical cable for the audio.

Problem: This has only occurred while Playing Halo 2 on my 360. I am getting these weird background distortions at the top of the screen. Looks almost like water running down behind the image. This only started recently this week. I've been playing Halo 2 on the 360 since I got in Nov. I've reseated the component cables on the TV thinking they might be loose or getting a bad connection. No help. Has anyone seen this problem? I'm thinking it's probably my TV since I have not tried playing it on other tv's in my house.(CRT) And there are so many bugs with these DLP TVs. Thanks

I got my 360 last week, and it's been running at about 97%... It froze once during PGR3, which was no big deal, and the DVD drive is the loudest in ALL functions that I have ever heard...

Spinning is loud, seeking is loud, closing makes weird noises... all of this is pretty normal, but yesterday it started making a loud screeching sound every now and then... It sounded like a dodgy fan belt in the winter... Probably what cats sound like when they are dying. I checked the disc and there were no scratches. Weird. It only happened the one session though, so I'm going to give it some time and see what happens (I love extended warantees). I think it MAY have been caused by the system not being entirely level (it is now), but who knows.

Only other problem: a couple of times now, I've sat down and held down the guide button on my (wireless) controller, waited, and, waited, and.... system never comes on. The controller does, and the ring of light circles and circles looking for it's master, but nothing. And it isn't the controller, because when it happened once I tried it with a second controller, and still nothing. It HAD to be turned on manually (Amazing how spoiled I am... I've been turning consoles on mnaually for my entire life, but after a week of remote, I curse at having to get up and hit a button).

None of these are enough to try and get a replacement unit, but they are still kinda weird.. Anyone experience anything similar?

p.s. I'm using an Acoustic Research Optical cable... fits like a charm and has a nice satisfying click. As for the people with loose opticals.... I had to do this with my mom's cheapo receiver before, and it might work for the 360, but may end in disaster... The inside of some optical recepticles contains a slightly springy metal clip thing, which is what provides the force to keep it in there. I was able to fix a loose connection by going in there with a little piece of plastic and giving the metal clip thingy a slight bend, making a snugger fit. This can end badly of course, so do it at your own risk.

I have been keeping up with DLP, LCD, and CRT technology and was surprised to see the term 'backwash' on here and not know what that is. What is 'backwash?'

As far as the water running down the back of your screen, is it only at the very top, meaning does it only run a couple lines of pixels down or are we talking about the image appearing to run a quarter or halfway down the screen?

If its only a couple lines down, it very well could be the deinterlacing of your TV. Occassionaly signals are not fully converted or are missing some infomration and there is overscanned lines showing up.

One time while playing PGR3 I thought mine froze, right after a race. I sat there for several minutes, really annoyed. There was no response to any buttons on the controller. I was about to unplug the console when it popped up a message "Disconnected from Xbox Live". Apparently my internet connection had "blinked" and the game was trying to communicate with the servers. It didn't save the results of that game. I shut down the game, checked my internet connection, logged back in and then continued playing for another hour or two without a problem.

I encountered an audio problem yesterday while playing Condemned: Criminal Origins. When I powered on the 360 with the disc in the tray, the audio was fine with the 360 splash screen and the "GoNats is connected to Xbox Live" connection sound, but when the disc loaded and I started to play, there was no sound. I made sure the optical cable was snugly plugged into the receiver and the 360. Then I unplugged the optical cable at the receiver end, and the red laser light was very, very faint (almost unnoticeable). I rebooted the 360, and the audio was fine again. I hope this isn't a sign of troubles ahead.

Oh, also the 360 locked up on Saturday night when I used the lunch lady's meat cleaver to cut the dead guy's hand off to get the fire axe. The only other time my 360 locked up was a few months ago with PGR3, and that was a one-time thing. I don't even remember if it was in-race or after a race.

I have a problem with the audio on my 360. I have it hooked up to my receiver via the optical port, and everything works fine, except the audio hitches at (semi)random times. During a movie, the audio will hitch maybe three or four times total, randomly throughout the movie, but during pgr3 it will hitch repeatedly during loading, especially when playing my own music. during the loading screen, it might cut in and out 3 or 4 times about 80 - 90% of the time in pgr3. also, in doa4 it hitches periodically during the loading screens or just navigating the menus. i'm pretty sure it's the 360 since it does it almost every load in pgr3. does anyone else experience the problems i mentioned, or is it something to call tech support about?

Well guys, another one bites the dust.

My XBox locked up twice last night while my brother was playing Madden '06. I then reset it wothout a game in and succesfully got into the dashboard. Played an XBox Live Arcade Game and then tried DOA4. The XBox froze while DOA4 was booting up. Tried resetting, got the same freeze.

Next, I detached the hard drive and booted into the dashboard succesfully. Tried DOA4 again... FREEZE.

After that freeze I was not able to succesfully reset the system and get back into the dashboard so that elliminates the possibility of a Hard Drive issue.

MS is sending me a box to ship the 360 back to them for replacement. I hope this does not void my BestBuy Product Replacement Plan...

I have a toshiba 34hf85 television and when I am playing xbox 360 games in 720p the screen is not centered. For example when I am playing Perfect Dark on the bottom right corner where it shows how many bullets you have left it is cut off a little bit and when I am playing need for speed and NBA 2k6 the left side is cut off a little bit and when I am in the dashboard it cuts off the left side a little bit. When I am in 480p or 1080i I don't have this problem everything is centered but i get the best overall picture with 720p. I just really want to find a solution because it's annoying to look at.

When i enable the HDTV settings on my xbox (from the cable switch) i get a really weird image. It has a black bar down the middle, and on both the left and right side is the same image, but its discolored, and scrambled. It also seems to get darker as you move down the screen. It doesnt matter what setting my xbox is on (480, 720 etc...) it does this no matter what. My tv is a protron 32" LCD tv. No clue what the problem is, and i've tried countless things just to try and get it to work, beginning to think that my xbox could be bad =( Thanks in advance for the help

I am getting a shimmer/waver in the bottom and top of my TV when setting the 360 to output in 1080i. I DO NOT get the shimmer/waver if the 360 is set to output 480p.

I have the 360 hooked up via component input to a Panasonic SA-HE100 receiver which then outputs component to a direct view Samsung TSL2793HF 27 inch HDTV.

If I plug the 360 directly into the TV then the shimmer doesn't appear. This leads me to believe one of the following...

1. The receiver is messing up the 1080i signal
2. The component cable from the receiver to the TV doesn't like the 1080i signal
3. There is electrical interference on the component cable from the receiver to the TV as all my cables (speaker wire, power, component) pass through a two inch hole in the back of my AV cabinet.

Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with this type of distortion?

i've started to get occasional "this disc is dirty or damage" messages when i play Madden 2006 or NBA2K6.

With Madden, it's an error message from the dashboard. with NBA 2k6, it's a very low-res PS1-looking message screen that seems to be originating from the disc.

Neither disc looks scratched or dirty, not even close.

PS - the freeze that happens before these "dirty disc" messages always seem to be right after a big tackle/slam dunk, etc, like it's a processor freezeup.

First off I have the Sony KV30HS420.
Monster Component Cables.

When playing the xbox 360 I noticed that at the bottom of the screen it kinda curves left, and is sorta blurry. It is totally normal when playing DVDs, no screen curve or anything.

Has anyone else seen this? I notice it alot in COD2.

Everything works well. Except for surround sound. On playing a DVD, surround works great and hits DTS and whatnot. However, when playing FIFA 06 or even SACD 5.1, it seems sub and rear isn't coming through.

sounds like you have a common geometry issue most crts experience. You can fix that yourself in the service menu, but would not recommend doing so until you know what you are doing. If you are interested in doing so then I would post in the direct view display section and ask about how you would go about doing this.Unless it is really distracting then I would just leave alone and deal with it, just so you can save yourself the trouble of trying to fix it.

Hi, this is my first post!

I have a problem concerning audio. I have my 360 connected to my receiver through the optical connection, but I don't seem to be getting a signal for my subwoofer. I have a Sony STR-DE845 receiver that lets me know its using the subwoofer with a little "subwoofer" light.

Whether I'm playing a game or listening to music with the 360, this light is never on, and no sound is coming from the subwoofer. With any other signal input it works just fine. I've looked through the 360s settings and I can't find anything that would affect this.

Any ideas? Thanks!

edit
False alarm! I found a couple other threads on Sony receivers. I reset my crossovers and changed my speaker sizes from large to small, and although the subwoofer light still wasn't on, the sub worked because LFE was on.

Hi guys =) great forum idea...anywho

When i enable the HDTV settings on my xbox (from the cable switch) i get a really weird image. It has a black bar down the middle, and on both the left and right side is the same image, but its discolored, and scrambled. It also seems to get darker as you move down the screen. It doesnt matter what setting my xbox is on (480, 720 etc...) it does this no matter what. My tv is a protron 32" LCD tv. No clue what the problem is, and i've tried countless things just to try and get it to work, beginning to think that my xbox could be bad =( Thanks in advance for the help
I have the same problem when setting the system to 1080i. It's fine with 480p. 720p isn't supported by my TV therefore shows nothing on the screen when set to it.

I just set it to TV ( it was on HD before) the same problem when going to 1080i. It's like the XBOX 360 doesn't think my TV is HD. Like I said before, I watch HD TV in 1080i all the time. Also, when set to 1080i my original XBOX was fine too.

I've now played 3 games and they look awesome. Is it possible the 360 regardless of being set to 480p is actually displaying 1080i? Doesn't the 360 automatically show whichever resolution the TV can handle? It sure doesn't look like 480p.

Just tried my 360 with a friends TV and 1080i was supported. I better not have to be stuck playing in 480p.

This is what I get when I set my XBOX 360 to 1080i. XBOX and HD set top box are fine.

Here's my problem. I'm running my Xbox 360 w/ component video cables into a Dell 24" widescreen monitor (I'm away from home for a while so it's the best I can do). When the Xbox outputs a 1080i signal, I can see faint horizontal bands in the picture on dark scenes -- they're easier to see when the brightness is turned up. When I set the 360 to output 720p, the bands disappear. This seems to me like it's probably some sort of video noise, but I can't figure out the source. Any ideas? I run the 360's component video cables straight into the monitor so I doubt cables are the issue. I've also tried other 1080i source material on the monitor and I don't see bands, so I don't think the monitor is the culprit.

Oops, disregard my post...I tried another 1080i source w/ my monitor and I see the banding on that too...I guess the culprit is the monitor after all.

well, my hdtv cables freaked out today. The Blue one just wouldn't work at all for the longest time which meant most of my colors were this nice shade of pink and green. called MS and a replacement is on the way.

All of a sudden, darn thing is ok again now.

I am having trouble getting Media center to work on my 360. I went through the media center setup wizard and everything checked out. It stated that my pc recognized the 360 but when I went to load the Media Center in the Xbox dashboard it cannot connect. It says another user or application has interfered with media center and terminates the session. I'm not sure what else to troubleshoot ? I tried searching on xbox.com but did not find anything !

turn off your xp firewall, and turn off anything like a firewall or antivirus. Remember, Norton Internet security is EVIL. If you have it, kill it.

Does it work with all that off?

Sorry for the confusion: dvdr (recorded on a dvdr machine) played on 360 seems to be artefact free. And that's also the reason why I was thinking about Macrovision: in general, it's a copy protect system incorporated in the signal of regular dvd's. If the system "suspects"that a recording machine is connected tot the other end of the signal, several artefacts are being introduced to the picture, resulting in a unwatchable picture (therefore making a copy virtually impossible). To my knowledge home made dvd's don't incorporate this system.

Yep im having the same problem with my Panasonic AE900e projector and Xbox360. Games work fine in HD mode but DVDs have these horizontal lines through the picture, so I need to change the switch on the cable to "TV" when watching DVDs.

Its annoying but I dont know any other way around it! :(

LOL, I went to Wally World to buy some printer ink and walked down the console area and seen the bottom right light on the 360 and it was red and blinking.. And on the scrren it said (i think) e65 or something... And to contact M$.. Guess being in that glass case with no room for ventilation finally met it's fate... On a side note they had Oblivion for sell for 69.82 WTF!!!!!!!!!!!!

called ms to report the death of my machine.

i live in switzerland. anyhow, they no longer send a box here, just a label, which you attach to a box which you must find yourself. then you call a courier guy and he comes to pick it up. apparently in some countries, they can email you the label and you just print it out, but not in switzerland.

oh well, seems like its time for me to take a little break from 360 gaming for the next week or two.

Had mine since launch, and she died a day or so ago. She hasn't been feeling well lately and finally it won't get any splash or load screen on any game.

I barely knew ya.

I was kicking myself for buying the EBGames $60 replacement, buy now I'll just walk in and swap it out (hopefully).

I thought i was going nuts until i realised you have the same problem. Until though i rang Panasonic and they tell me that the Xbox 360 runs in 60hz when in HD thats the reason why i dont get picture. The operator also told me that he had received several callls regarding the same Tv me and you have.

I Spoke to xbox360 hotline and they advised me that i could change the hertz to 50 in TV mode. By selecting PAL-50 in Display settings. I did so switch back to HD and again NO GO. I sincerely think that the 360 runs in 60hz when in HD and when looking around on the web apparently 50hz is the fastest a CRT tv can refresh in HD over 720P or higher. So it advised purchasing a PLASMA or LCD for faster refresh rate - (YES IF ONLY THEY TOLD US BEFORE...)

The best picture and same res as 1080i is changing your picture setting to 75/133. This will double the lines on the screen. Run the xbox 360 in TV mode but still use the composite inputs and you will notice that screen res and picture is just as good if not better then 1080i - 1920 x 1680 or so on. Notice the text of the games its much smaller and cleaner.. :p

Let me know what you think...I hope i have made sense -

Not really...

First off, I'm assuming that you're replying to Crono7's post, and his is the same TV you have? If so, neither of you specify in your profiles where you're from, and a search of Panasonic's global website doesn't find that TV model #. I'm assuming you're somewhere in Europe... If you find a link to the specs on the TV & manuals (preferably a direct link to the manufacture's website & specs), we may be able to figure out where the problem is.

The Xbox360 outputs HD resolutions via component cables in conformance with the ATSC Table 3 standard, which includes specs for 30 and 60 Hz refresh rates. I'm not sure where you got that a CRT can only refresh up to 50hz in HD resolutions, but I don't think that's accurate. CRT televisions in the US refresh at 60Hz, and CRT computer monitors can refresh at much higher rates. If you look at the last page of the Samsung TV Manual here (http://www.samsung.com/support/productsupport/download/Model_Select2.aspx?type=TV&subtype=DynaFlat%20HDTV&model=TX-R3075WH&fileType=UM&LSSI=/include/SSI/us_left/LMenu_TV_DynaFlatHDTV.sec&RSSI=/include/SSI/us_right/RMenu_TV.sec), you'll see "Frequency of Operation" as 60Hz. You'll also see a message "A TV designed for one system may
not work properly with another system due to differences in the TV channel frequencies".

AFAIK, there is no 'HD' standard in Europe yet (I could be wrong), so any TV that is purchased in Europe would need to support the US-based ATSC to display 'HD'. Though you may be recieving a 'high definiton' signal somehow in 1080i @ 50Hz, that's not 'HD' in terms of the ATSC Table 3 standards. Even if there is a European HD standard, I'm fairly certain that the Xbox360 does not support it.

I've had my 360 for about 90 days now and while playing Ghost Recon, the screen went black. I turned it off and turned it back on and got the dreaded 3 red rings of death. So I turned it off and uplugged everything and plugged everything back in a few minutes later. Everything was fine.

Last night I was playing the Tomb Raider demo, and it froze up again. Turned it off and on, 3 red lights again. Turn it off and on. Still nothing. Got frustrated and turned it off and on about 12 times. Green lights again! Watched streaming HD for a couple of hours with no problem.

The date on the back is Jan 17/06. Would this not have been a second or third manufacturing batch by then??

Should I send it in for service?

BTW, I bought it at Future shop and can't find my reciept anywhere (of course). Since it hasn't even been off the assembly line for 90 days, do you think Microsoft will give me a problem? Do they even have a depot in Canada?

I have the exactly the same problem as above (blank screen, 3 red lights, etc.)

Personally, I think it's a software issue. WHY, you ask?

Because I hardly ever play the 360, play for only 30-45 minutes at a time (been way to busy), and it's extremely well ventilated and have had zero problems since a particular date.

I think a firmware upgrade is causing these issues, which is why I'm hesitant on swapping out with another unit at EB (if I can find one).

Jasman, I think it's definietly not an overheating issue too, becuase I left it upplugged all night and it froze after 5 minutes while playing a game. The case and power supply were still cool. Yet when I got it restarted (after turning it on and off a dozen times), and it was all nice and warm, it played an HD video for 2 hrs without an issue. Afterwards, tried playing a demo , and it locked up right away. Strange

I'm really not looking forward to sending this thing in to Microsoft.....

My best guess is that their latest firmware or a specific game update is the cause of the problem.

I've had my 360 for a day. I thought I'd check in with the forum regarding an issue I've seen. It may be normal?

I downloaded the Oblivion trailer and I see that on camera pans, characters on horseback, etc....there is an occasional hesitation and lack of smoothness. I was thinking that this trailer would be optimized and the glitches could be on my end? I also notice on Profect Gotham, the crawling text has this same sort of hitch.

Is this normal 360 behavior? My unit is in a cool ventilated area.

Thanks!

I rented PGR3 from Gamefly and decided to give it a spin this afternoon, but I can't get it to boot up...the disc is in good shape, clean, no scratches. The first time I put it in the message on screen said "To play this disc, please place it in an Xbox 360" (something like that...). Now it won't do anything, I'm just stuck on the dashboard.

I've only had my 360 about 2 weeks and this is the first game I've tried to play other than Ghost Recon....any thoughts?

I got a return 'ticket' number from MS on Friday night, and streamed HD video to the Xbox all weekend straight withought any lockups. It's just when I play a game. So it's definietly not an overheating issue. Very frustrating. Anyway, they are sending a box today, and assure me I'll have a new unti within 4 days of them getting the old one back. This is all I have to watch HD movies and TV. The wait will kill me. I can live without the game playing for a bit though.

I have a Samsung HC-R 4755W RPCRT that i bought about 6 months ago. My problem is that when using component cables set to 1080i, im seeing a very faint, 'white ghost' scrolling line about 4in wide moving from left to right quickly that is the size of my TV vertically. This was happening when viewing HD programs with my cable box via component cables they provided in 1080i. I made the switch to DVI & its gone. Now the Xbox360 does the same thing when set to 1080i. Only time you really notice it is during dark scenes of a game or if my dashboard theme is dark. If i switch to 720p, none of this happens.

I called Samsung today & they said it could be my analog board. But what i dont get is why doesn't it do this is in 720p? Then they said it could be something to do with the poor grounding in my apartment. I also admit that im using 2 crappy $20 surge protectors in one outlet & have about 6 electronic devices each hooked upto them. So could it be possible that when the 360 is set to 1080i, its pulling more juice & my protectors cant handle it? Should i buy an $80 Monster surge? Could it be a shielding problem, maybe buy the $60 Monster component cables? Or should i just let Samsung replace the analog board?<<Last resort since i have no trouble in 720p...Samsung said the TV has no native resolution, it can display 480p/720p/1080i w/out any type of converting. So im thinking it some kind of interference when set to 1080i. But why the interference in 1080i & not 720p?

Please, anyone, have any ideas?

Are people still having problems with the Xbox 360 on 1080i-only sets (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=607122)?

EDIT:

It seems to be a TV overscan issue (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=611454). Hmmm... We'll see what it looks like on my TV.

For what it's worth, I have a 1080i only rear projection TV that has a slight overscan limitation. It's an old one, a Sony KP53XBR300 bought in 1999.

The overscan varies, about 2% vertically and 4% horizontally. It was about 5% until I tweaked the settings. I can eliminate the overscan, but at the cost of nasty distortion. A skilled person may be able to do better.

Mostly I don't notice it unless a menu item is very close to the edge, and then it's only cosmetic. The area lost is not big enough to hide a large rat or imp. ;)

I purchased the play and charge kit hooked it up to the console, the red light flashes for a split second and never comes back on...I then turn off the console so that the controller can charge but then the 4 quadrants on the guide button is continually flashing and I hear that the fan is still on, is this normal?

Edit: Both the wireless controller and battery seem to function correctly.

Edit: Exchanged it for a new one and works fine now, the other one must've been a dud.

Hello,

I've had my 360 for a week now, and I have it set to output at 1080i. The thing is however, my TV is only detecting a 480p signal.

Any ideas why?

I've gone back into the system options to ensure that the output is set to 1080i, but the TV indicates that it is receiving a 480p signal.

The TV in question is the SXRD.

The switch on the video dongle needs to be in the HDTV position. Also, you're not using the single composite video cable are you?

I read that this is very common in 1080i setting on many projection sets... haven't bothered trying any other settings to see if it goes away.

My xbox 360 just seems to have died. I was playing fine a few hours prior. Then I tried to turn it on again and all FOUR red lights are blinking around the power button, and the screen is blank. From what I could tell with a few google searches, all 4 red lights blinking only means the A/V cord is not plugged in right, but it is.

Looks like I'll have to call support and send it back. It's just refusing to work anymore. I guess this is what happens with a rushed delivery.

I finally lost patience with my 360 last night. After the umpteenth freeze while playing Winning Eleven, I called the support number.
And what an exciting ride that was. Maybe it's my plummy English tones (not really, I have a very middle of the road South East accent) but I had to repeat everything at least five times. I spelt out my last name over and over and it was still too much for the CSR to pronounce it even close to properly. 'Hawthorne' isn't that weird is it?
After about 25 minutes of dithering, I was finally told that I would be sent a box and then it all got weird again. The CSR claimed I would receive a new 360 in the box. "What about the old, defective one?" I asked. "I dunno."
Good times.
I'm going to call back today with my ticket number and see if I can get someone who might be able to see what's going on.

I was mistaken about the blinking red lights being all four. That was simply me not seeing the illumination properly. I have the classic 3 red blinking lights, that indicates a hardware failure.

Unfortunately as I bought it on Ebay, the original purchase date is slightly past the 90 day warranty now, and I'm stuck with a $500 paperweight.

I really loved the system up until it stopped working. :( The worst part about it though is that I have to explain my quick $500 loss to the wife. lol

Unfortunately for MS I think they may have a big problem on their hands. If you google something like: xbox 360 3 red blinking lights, you will see this failure mode is not at all uncommon. In many cases people seem to be getting replacement xbox's with ultimately exactly the same problem, or their warranty expiring like mine.

Well at least I'll have a better excuse to buy a PS3 when they come out.

Really? That's great news, but they didn't give me that impression when I called them. They asked when I purchased it when I called them, and my confession gave away that the 90 days had passed. They asked me to take it back to the retailer, but Walmart is all sold out of units and they won't take it now anyway. I guess I'll call Microsoft back and be a bit more insistent on replacement and see where it goes.

Thanks for the info. Where did you hear about the warranty extension?

My first Xbox360 needed to be replaced and they replaced it. Then they told me they would cover me until this November. I didn't even buy the extended warranty from them. Many other people have had the same experience on other forums. When you get your replacement I suggest getting a extended warranty from Microsoft. Just in case.

Many states have implied warranties that become the burden of companies selling here. In CA for instance, I'd assume you have at least a 1 year implied warranty that supercedes the 3 month express warranty.

Hello everyone

I use an 32inc LCD TV that supports HD. I use the MS VGA HD cable between my Xbox and TV. And I used to run the game in 1360x768.

I've got quite an annying problem on my hands. I had owned my Xbox for about 4 months without any problems. But recently when I was playing oblivion the went black for just 1 sec and when it came back it had moved a bit to the left.

I assumed this would go away if I ran the initial setup once again (the option on the system tab). It did not, so I tried reconnecting the VGA cable to see if it that would fix it. After I had reconnected the cable my picture was in the middle again but my TV was showing on the resolution 1024x768, even though the Xbox was still set on 1360x768.

So this is my problem; my TV wont give me the highest resolution even though I set my Xbox on it. It can wiev all the other resolutions (however the picture moves itself to the left again if I put it on 1280x720). I know this is supposed to work since It's been working before. It could ofc also be my TV that is causing this. I've been thinking about just resetting all the settings so the xbox becomes just like new but I'm not sure on how to do that.

I'm also curious about the difference between 720p and 1080i, I've read alot of posts about it so I know it has to do with resolution. Perhaps it's only something on the TVs in the US and not like the ones here in Sweden.

Any help I could get would be greatly appreciated, and sorry for my mediocre english, just ask me again if there was something I explained badly and I'll ask it again.

Two more XBOX 360's bite the dust...

Got my first one around Christmas 2005. Had problems immediately - freezes. Right in the middle of a game it would freeze. Sometimes you could go 30 minutes, sometimes 2 hours -- then FREEZE. No change in lights (both green), just a freeze.

Called M$, did the DHL thing, and got a new one in mid-January. Worked great -- til very recently. BTW, been running it 1080i w/DD5.1 - no problem on that front.

About 2 weeks ago I got a freeze again. Now it's happening all the time. Same problem. Multiple games - does it in PGR3, Ghost Recon, PDZ, COD2, whatever. Tried vertical, horizontal, suspending power supply (which they never even asked me to return the first time - didn't want it), blowing a fan across it from the outside to improve external circulation (VERY good BTW - on top of a table w/nothing warm around it), etc. No dice. Still locks up. Weird how it seems to get worse over time. Wonder if dust is gumming up the fans & heatsinks inside? Whatever - back again.

For anyone who hasn't already invested money in games for this lemon of a console, I highly recommend against it. The XBOX 360 is obviously a very bad design. If you buy one, it appears you have to plan on having it replaced every couple months or so, assuming it even works out of the box.

360 died. I just got done replacing my Sub that blew on me the other day and was all pumped up to hook up the new one. I turned on the 360 to listen to some music, hit play for a song, the music sounded great with the new sub and then all of a sudden a loud buzzing sound started and the tv screen looked all jaggy and then froze.

I turned it off and then back on. 3 RED Blinking Lights. I called MS and they told me I was 2 days past my warranty. I was really pissed but they told me I could still buy the extended, which I did.

This thing has been working perfect from the day we got it. If you don't have a warranty, I would get one.

I was able to return my 360 and received the "new" one yesterday. It seems to work fine, but it is older than my previous one. The born-on date is sometime in December 2005, which leads me to believe that it's a reburbished one from a previous return.

I hope they have correctly diagnosed the root cause of the defect. Given that so many people have returned theirs and eventually had the same problem I kind of doubt it.

I just bought a LN-S4051D and have hooked up the Xbox 360 through a VGA input. But whenever I turn off the TV or the Xbox, the picture settings get reset to the horrible looking manufacturer's settings.

For example, I have a custom picture setting in which the manufacturer's defaults are Contrast = 80 and Brightness = 50. I changed these to Contrast = 73 and Brightness = 75. I turned off the Xbox. When I truned it back on, the custom picture settings were back to Contrast = 80 and Brightness = 50. When I hook up the Xbox through the component connections, there is no problem with the picture settings.

Does anybody have an idea what the problem might be?

i have an xbox 360 hooked up to a benq 8700+ dlp projector. whenever i toggle the switch from TV to HD, the screen gets scrambled and flips around. in TV mode, it works fine. HD is scrambled. my hd directv receiver plays 480p, 720p, and 1080i beautifully on this projector. cant figure out why this wont work. i actually returned the first console back to best buy because i thought it was a console problem...now i am on the second console and there is no difference in performance.

i noticed that someone several months ago posted this problem but didnt see a solution. does anyone have any suggetions on what i might need to do in order to fix this problem? thanks.

My son's just froze, call MS they asked for the serial number, then said the return box is on it's way. It's out of warranty, nobody's talking about a repair charge. Has anybody else returned unit out of warranty?

Did they quote you a repair charge?

I returned mine out of warranty and free of charge. They originally told me to take it back to the store to get a new one, but that wasn't an option. So I called them back, and they let me send it in for repair. They didn't make me send a copy of the receipt, so they couldn't have known for sure. Someone earlier said they have extended the warranty on all units to 1 year. I think you should have no problem getting it repaired free of charge.

My 360 Premium died last week and I finally called MS last night. The first rep I talked to said mine was out of warranty and I would have to pay for repairs. After speaking with his manager they finally agreed to repair it free of charge. I specifically asked about the rumored 1 year warranty extension for all units and he said that is just a rumor, they have not extended the warranty past 90 days. But he did say they are making exceptions for some repairs.

Received our return box last night, 3 day express. The box is made for shipping 360's. Just put the unit in a plastic bag, then into the box, replace the shipping label, they even include the tape to seal the box.

My guess is MS has repaired more than just a couple units.

My guess is MS has repaired more than just a couple units.

Considering the failure rate for new electronics is usually pegged at 3-5%, several tens of thousands more than a couple.

My 360 broke last sunday. I would get the three red lights. I called MS and was told that my 360 had run out of warranty the previous thursday which doesn't make any sense, since he also told me that the warranty was 90 days. I bought the 360 on launch date and it obviously doesn't add up. He said that I could send it in for repair and that it would be $129. I'm guessing that's a flat repair fee. I'm really dissapointed with MS right now. My xbox didn't break until 2 years after I bought it and that was actually my fault, so I just bought a new one.
