The ghost arnt really different colors than the main objects, just extreamly faint, but yet very noticable at times. Their was even one instance when on my new channel it was showing scores for a basketball game, and i could see a faint ghostly image of the numbers scrolling completely across the screen. Thats the worst ive noticed it, however nothing else has ever come close to that. Mostly just like what i meantioned...about 1 cm(ish) to the right.

AVIA is expensive and contains a lot of advanced stuff most people will never use. I like it for the "color decoder" and "chroma delay" test patterns. I still keep the old Video Essentials (VE was also expensive) handy for LFE level setup (get a sound-level meter too).

I've seen DVE in the past at Best Buy for around $30. It has the best sharpness test pattern I've ever used, and it will allow you to dial-in the overscan. These discs do not fix things automatically for you. They provide the tools (video test patterns, audio test tones, and great demo scenes) for you to do the job yourself. If you are not capable then hire an ISF tech.

wait...dve can fix overscan? ive already noticed it on normal tv, and i havent even gotten a chance to see it in HD yet

Has anybody had any trouble fixing overscan in 480P FULL mode. When I take the INHD Tune-Up overscan pattern and have the cable box down-convert to 480P the necessary fields for overscan are greyed out. The only one that is available is the one that controls horizontal width, but not H-Position or V-Width or V-Position (can't remember the names right now). I was able to do 1080i overscan with no problem. Anybody have any ideas?

I've been lurking here for a while and thought I'd contribute. I'm a 34wx15 owner who's getting annoyed by the ghosting I'm experiencing with my set. I've taken this picture from Master & Commander. I find this film really highlights the ghosting problem as it’s most noticeable in darker images.

Go to: img509.imageshack.us/img509/1073/panaprob7zh.jpg (can't post image since it's my first post)

First, let me state this is NOT a DVD issue. The DVD itself looks fine on most other televisions. This image problem is apparent on all DVDs as well as my HD cable box, and XBOX 360 when using the 34wx15.

This image doesn't really do the problem justice, but it gives you an idea of what many of us our experiencing. First, look at the rope on the left side of the image. You'll see a second ghosted rope immediately to the right. It's faint in my picture (limits of a cheap digital camera) but visible. Also look at the two characters. See how the left side of their coast are faded? Again, it’s more noticeable with two real eyeballs then a poor digital shot, but it gives you an idea

This ghosting occurs all the time, but it's most noticeable in darker images. It's particularly annoying in darker shows/films as you lose much of the detail from the image because of what’s best described as a blurring effect. In technical terms this would look like a chroma/luma delay problem, but my understanding was that’s the result of mismatched cable lengths.

I have tried switching video cables with my set. The image improved when I started using premium monster cables versus budget ones, but the ghosting hasn’t gone away.

I unfortunately purchased my set from Sears. I didn’t know it at the time, but Sears gets a discounted price from Panasonic because Sears uses it’s own techs to service the sets. Because of this I cannot have a Panasonic tech look at my under warranty set unless I pay for it.

A Sears technician was at my house and did next to nothing. It was clearly the first time he had seen my model as he couldn’t figure out the remote. All he did was adjust the brightness/contrast settings and degauss the set. He didn't even know about the service menu or how to access it (I showed him) and advised he didn’t know what any of the settings did. So in the end he did nothing.

He basically told me that the ghosting would appear to be a limitation of the set. I'm not necessarily disagreeing with him as floor room sets seem to have similar issues, but it's hard to tell with the bright images under even brighter lights.

I know I won't have the perfect picture at this price level, but the issues I'm experiencing are too great to ignore. Too much detail is lost in darker films. I would love for someone have an actual Panasonic rep/tech look at their set and address the issue.

Hee hee, sorry if my first post makes me sound like an angry old man. I do love my set, but the ghosting issue is starting to drive me a little mad and I’d love to see a solution.

^^Yep thats the exact same problem i'm having. I'm going to call panasonic sometime today or tomorrow and see about getting someone here to check out my set. It was a christmas gift to me, so i dont know if i can provide any proof of when it was purchased or if its still under warranty. It was purchased withen the last month i know.

Yikes! My guess is an IC has failed or defaulted to some horrible value.

Definitely have a real tech who knows how to debug modern TV circuits look at this. I think they should be able to fix it if they have schematics and can trace the cause. Panasonic will probably have info or bulletins about it in their database. Insist that someone with access to this info service your set!

One more thing to try is switching your source from 480p to 480i or vice/versa to see if the ghosts move.

I have also seen ghosts like this in some old flaky computer monitors... perhaps a failed power-supply component.

I would hope it's something that they can fix, but it seems like a lot of us our having the exact same problem for it to be just a bad circuit in a few sets.

Hey guys, I'm new here and I just recently picked up the CT-30WX15 and I was in the service menu working on the xbox360 when I accidently hit some buttons and my numbers are all screwed up now! Does anyone have the defaults written down that they could post here? It would help me out alot, specifically the variable HTRAP, but a few others were messed up as well so if you could post the whole list that would be great. Also if anyone has any settings they use thier xbox360 with for this tv post them as well, cause I'm new to this whole thing. THANKS! :)

If you search this thread ( including posts by me ) you will find several people have posted THEIR default values. Note the values vary depending on the input format ( 480 / 1080 ) and I also wouldn't doubt if some of these settings were tweaked at the factory for your particular set so YMMV with my defaults.

I'm trying to calibrate for overscan and I did Horizontal Width just fine, but there doesn't seem to be one for Verticle width. Someone mentioned that it was V-RAS but that can't be right, that seems to have some weird page peeling effects on the top or bottom, not the actual width. Any suggestions?

I would hope it's something that they can fix, but it seems like a lot of us our having the exact same problem for it to be just a bad circuit in a few sets.

It could be a bad batch of IC's or bad version of firmware. It could also depend on some particular user settings or scenario to crop up.

For example: every single Pioneer Elite RPTV in the x30 model series had a problem lurking with the CRT drive cards, that took over 2 years to solve. Some people never saw it, and some people had their $6k sets "fixed" 4 times before getting the true fix.

and im also noticing ghosting to the right of images. its more noticable on still images than it is moving ones though

A Panasonic tech came to the house to look at the bowing problem that I've had with the CT30WX15. To recap, my problem was a bowing (like an inverted bowl) at the top but not at the bottom of the screen. The tech adjusted the deflection yokes and now the problem is much less severe although not entirely cured. He said that if the yokes are adjusted too much then the bottom line would begin to suffer and there would be convergence problems. He also stated that there is no adjustment in the service menu to fix this problem. He said that this is a common problem with widescreen CRTs from all manufacturers.

All in all, I'm satisfied with the improvement as I can hardly see the bowing anymore.

Hello, I posted a review earlier but I noteced some of you are interested in people picture settings(brightness, colo, etc). I also noticed some seem the same, so I decided to post mine since its a bit different, and it is the best setting I could get on my TV using AVIA.

Picture: 31
Brightness: 51
Color: 35
Tint: 32
Sharpness 15

Note the drastic difference between my Picture and my Brightness. The picture is dark on TV by default, and the white level needed to be adjusted so high to obtain the propor color. The picture should always be set low, at least lower than the point of blooming(when the brights begin to bleed or expand). I also found that the sharpness was pretty much useless when you have VM turned on, VM pretty much quite effective at improving image quality.

Don't know. Still trying to figure out the cause of the problem. I don't think it's something we should have to live with, but who knows. I haven't had a chance to speak with Panasonic again about the problem.

I don't think there's going to be a service menu fix. I've fooled around with almost all the value to no avail. This is going to probably require at least a visit by a tech if not some hardware replacement.

How do you turn VM on? What does it do?

Also I have been told DVE for HDTV can only be used if you have D-VHS. What should I use then to calibrate the set if I only have an HTPC connection and I want to calibrate the HDMI (1080i) mode?

ok...i got a couple of questions here
1) what exactly is that loud "flicker" when u turn the tv on? like, when i turn it on, it goes thru this thing, then the tv does like a fizzing noise.

2) im sure i have overscan on this tv, since i havent changed anything in the service menu. but i was wondering how do i check how bad it is? i dont have HDTV or an xbox 360 yet...any ideas?

3) when u change the settings in the service menu, does it do that for each signal coming in (480p/1080i), or per input (component 1, 2, etc).

4) are all the hex numbers people are putting up, the stock hex numbers, or the hex numbers they used to fix the tv?

sorry if my questions are hard to understand, im still getting use to this whole HD era of things

Can't answer all your ?s, but as for #1......The "fizz" or "hiss" you hear when you first turn the set ON is an auto-degaussing circuit; it's supposed to do this for a second or 2....both my Samsungs do it...hey, even my Mom's 20-year-old Zenith does it!! (although, sadly, her set's so ready for that big Parts Counter in the Sky, no amount of degaussing will help it.....;))
As for your other queries.....be patient....others here will be by to help answer them for you....

I thought I'd share my settings for the HDMI cable box connection:
Mode Standard
Picture 38
Brightness 40
Color 26
Tint 24
Sharpness 9
Natural Color Off
Video NR On
VM On
Mpeg NR On
I've set these by "eye" over the last few weeks, and think I've tweaked the picture quality very nicely for my cable signal using IN HD Tuneup last weekend. During yesterdays game on CBS HD, the black of the Steeler's helmets and the Bengals uniforms were indeed deep black, while still being able to differentiate each ripple and seam in the uniform. The Steelers gold was the correct color, judge by having a middle '70s "terrible towel" handy for reference. The Giants' helmets were vivid blue and red, and all programming in HD, especially Discovery and IN HD, is bright, vivid and colorful while being natural appearing.

I have a similar ghosting issue on my flat crt monitor. The monitor ghostung however is a bit different, its not an image ghost more than a whitish glow around bright objects in dark backgrounds. As my research explained it to me, it seems to be caused by reflections of light within the tube that bounce back as a secondary ghost image, this is solely on these flat crt screens. Perhaps somehting similar is the cause on our panny's.

just got my avia disc. cant wait to mess around with it. does anyone know if it can fix overscan?

Yes, but like I said on the previous page:

... it will allow you to dial-in the overscan. These discs do not fix things automatically for you. They provide the tools (video test patterns, audio test tones, and great demo scenes) for you to do the job yourself.

So YOU must learn how, and do it for YOUR TV. The CRT is an analog device and every single one off the assembly line varies. Nobody else can post exact "hex codes" for your TV. It's not like hacking a DVD drive or computer part. There is no point posting "stock" values unless someone has a total disaster and their set is FUBAR. People post their calibrated values for interest's sake only and so far they are mostly just user menu settings, not service menu parameters.

This has nothing to do with HD by the way - overscan has always been an issue, and TV's have had service menus for the last 15 years or so.

You need to go through AVIA step-by-step following the instructions, and see their web site if you need more info. There is a test pattern for overscan that you must display with your DVD, while very carefully fiddling in the service menu of the TV. If you set it correctly then it will be correct for DVD res. Depending on the design of this particular TV it may or may not be correct for HD mode. So for that you will need a DVD player that upconverts (outputs HD res) or just worry about it when you get an HDTV receiver or 360. An ISF tech can also set it for you for all modes with his signal generator.

If this scares you, it should! You can do serious damage in the service menu and they are usually very cryptic and not user-friendly. You are wise to ask questions first, so don't be shy, but do be specific.

Hoping AVfile and others in the know will respond to this--your advice has alreaday been informative and helpful...

I bought the CT26Wx15 for on Dec. 16 at Circuit City for $399 and only have a week left to decide if it's a keeper. I'm having problems with my set--ghosting and bowing--that others have already mentioned. I have a third problem--waviness in scrolling and static text/graphics. The ticker text on CNN, FOX, etc. has a gentle wave in it: starts a little high on the right side, dips, rises and rolls over the Panasonic logo, exits higher on the left side. Long words best reveal the wave pattern. Static graphics such as menu screens in XBox games or text-filled local cable channels (school districts, municipal channels) also show the waviness and tilt.

Simply put, is this something that can be corrected? is it related to slight bowing in screen?

I called Panasonic (busy signal? oh, yeah!), was given the number for the closest service center. Service shop can't schedule a pick-up for two weeks (I'm in Pittsburgh, where apparently tvs fizzle during the playoffs), and can't guarantee they'll get to it in a week even if I drop it off. I probably won't be able to get a technician's review before I officially own the tv on Jan. 16. And CC no longer has the 26' in stock.

I would truly appreciate your help. Thanks.

Both are signs of bad geometry. Unfortunately without some very finnicky magnet work inside the set, it can't be fixed. You will probably not be able to find a tech that knows how or is willing to do magnet work. With a set this low in price it is probably not in your interest to pay a pro to do it. I would recommend returning it for another while they still have them. If you still get a bad one try upgrading to the 30".

01-09-06, 06:34 PM
Thank you, AVfile. I have limited tech knowledge. I described the waviness problem to the service center tech, but he didn't (wouldn't?) address my specific problem. Could you tell a little more about geometry and magnets--and could I have in any way affected the tv(I'm not using a surround sound system or operating an MRI machine in the next room) or was it born this way? How typical are these problems with Panasonic and crt hdtvs in general? And will bowing and waviness increase over time?

And thank you for telling me the repair probably wouldn't be performed properly anyway. I'd like to limit my misadventures in HDTV to bulky boxes and back-breaking CRT lifting. The price and PQ of the 26" are the main reasons I held off on returning it. I've been trying to live with the defect because I only notice it in text and graphics, not in moving images. And the relatively low weight of 85 lbs. The 26" is no longer listed at CC (in-store or online) but still listed (at list price) on Panasonic's site. Seems like all the 26" crt hdtvs are disappearing. The 30" is there--and weighs 60 lbs. more (what accounts for all the extra weight? is it stuffed with country hams?) I will once again have to bribe friends to help with the move. So if 30" is the next logical step, would you stay with Pansonic or move to the Sony KV30HS420 or Toshiba's 30HF85 in the same price range? The CRT HDTVs just looked better than so many of the plasmas, lcd, etc. Thanks again.

01-09-06, 06:48 PM
I have none of your problems with the 26" that I picked up. I do have overscan, but I have been unable to access the service menu with the remote. That may be a good thing! My picture is damn near perfect, and very acceptable to my eyes, and to anyone that is viewing this TV. So, are you being too critical? If not, you may be best to "pass up" this deal and get your credit toward another display. What would that be though? I chose this for the "deal" and the fact that it would fit in my cabinetry. Would I have gone for more bucks with a different set if this were not available? Probably, but remember, CRTs seems to be the best right now at displaying standard def TV, and that's mainly what's available. I assume you are in the same boat if you chose a 26" display vs. something with some "wow factor" size to it. By the way, I really don't like being in the holding pattern for some "new stuff" to come out of CES that will completely make us throw large sums of cash at the big box stores!

deathandtaxes
01-09-06, 07:17 PM
Jim, you speakth the truth. I don't really want to spend another $300-400 for 4 more inches and 60 more lbs. The deal on the 26" finally brought me to the HD table--and just the table. I haven't ordered HD service ((through (ugh) Adelphia)) or bought an OTA antenna/tuner. The improved PQ on expanded basic cable or digital (tried both) has been great. An the ol' XBox looks splendid in 480p widescreen--even the startup screen looks better. And for a CRT, it's lightweight, easily lifted by two people. Because I only notice the bowing/waviness with text and graphics, I have considered keeping it. I would definitely exchange it for another if CC had more in stock, but they don't. Now that I've a taste of the HD (or in my case, its inherent ED powers), I don't won't to go back, nor do I want to wait for the new stuff. It's visual crack. Unfortunately for me, I just got a set with a few defects. And I'm a little worried it will only get worse with time. So you haven't noticed any tilt or wave on news/stock/score tickers? Any chance you want to trade tvs? ;)

Bad geometry seems to be very common in HDTV's at this price point. It is the nature of having a FLAT 16x9 tube (think of the physics) so I doubt it was anything you did. I've seen terrible geometry in several demo models all over town so they are probably just born that way. I don't know much about the magnet work except that they need to place special small magnets in very strategic locations on the tube itself and fiddle with them tediously, so the results would be hit & miss. I would never buy one of those demos and if a new TV was like that I would return it instantly.

I was all set to buy a top-line Sony KD-34XS955 (34" @ $2000, 200 lbs) on closeout when I noticed some minor geometry problems on the two demos in different local shops. Other guys in this forum have suggested it is also an issue with the XS and even the mighty XBR, however nothing so terrible as what you describe. Some happy owners had satisfactory magnet tweaking done. If the problem is severe in your case it may not be possible to fix. They do have amazing picture but that is a large, flat, wide screen to expect perfect geometry!

I guess in years past, when one paid $1500 for a Sony Wega SDTV for example, one got what one paid for! Sony was generally the best, and perhaps still are.

The best HDTV without obvious geometry problems that I've seen currently in stores is the more affordable Sony KV-30HS420. It's just a shame the cabinet is all silver. 30" would seem to be the sweet spot in terms of size (laws of physics) and price (quality control). My theory is the 26" @ $399 are not allocated enough time for setup in the factory.

01-09-06, 11:40 PM
NOSintake, I'm not sure if you're asking about my particular tv with its defects or the screen aspect in general. Apologies in advance for simply repeating what's in the manual. "Full" aspect uniformly stretches standard 4:3 content into a widescreen form, causing images to appear wider and shorter than normal. The "Just" aspect stretches the left and right edges of the 4:3 image but not the center, leaving most of the images in tact but distorting their edges--thus the bubbling/fisheying of text (which looks normal in the center of the screen). If the 4:3 content is letterboxed, "Zoom" almost fills the entire screen (little gray above and below). If 4:3 content is standard, I often watch it as is; stretching, uniformly or on the edges, just looks weird. On my set, bottom text waves on all aspects. Let me ask, are you seeing wavy text on your screen?

Jim Hef
01-10-06, 08:25 AM
I would have to believe that a tech could realign that picture tube to get rid of that waving. I don't recall anyone else having that problem out of the box, so it must be just one little fix. Keep the TV and call the warranty repair person. And, then call your cable company and subscribe to the "real" high def stuff...it's worth it!

I would have to fire it up and look in the menus for the exact location, but ALL test patterns are under Advanced AVIA from the main menu. There should be a sub-menu under video called Geometry or something.

One more hint for BAD GEOMETRY I almost forgot:

Try rotating the TV 90 degrees (yes relocating it in the room) to align the CRT differently in the earth's magnetic field. It might take a while (days) for it to have effect, or it might do absolutely nothing. Sorry I don't have any direct experience.... just a guess.

for people talking about the words "bubbling" its because the screen is stretching. watch whatever has the text at the bottom in 4:3 mode, you will notice that it is not there. i also noticed that it isnt there in FULL mode.

AVfile- where can i find the test patterns for overscan in avia?Gah your smart, your exactly right, the image is only being streched on the far sides to fit the screen. And i'm guessing it does this to preserve the overall image quality in the middle of the screen. I guess thats what it does in JUST mode, and in FULL mode it just streches the entire screen. So i guess i dont have a problem with that now. Now to only get my Ghosting problem fixed. I really need to call panasonic.

About 3 years ago I bought the panasonic 27" 4:3 Tv for $459 and the picture is excellent no ghosting no nothing. So I decided that I needed an HDTV to go with my xbox 360 so the only logical step would be to buy another tv. So I went to CC and bought the Samsung slimfit 4:3 Tv. I was very dissapointed in the pic quality of this tv plus all hd stuff was in letterbox, this tv does display 720p though, so I took the tv back. I then got the panasoic 26" for 399 because the week prior it was 699. I had the tv for a week and noticed a small nick in the screen so I returned for another one because I loved the pq soo much. I got the second one and then noticed the severe ghosting or image shift or color shift in the picture. I went to CC to replace it with another one and they were all sold out. So I spoke with the TV manager becasue my 30day period was almost up and he told me I could bring it back for an exchange after the 30days. So 2 weeks later, yestarday, I called CC and spoke to the same manager and he told me that they most likely wont carry the TV anymore becasue they sold the display unit, if I would have knew this I would have returned the TV to get my money back and bought someting in the $1,000 price range. So I went to a CC in my old neighborhood this past weekend and they had the TV but would not let me exchange it becasue the exchange after date was only valid @ the orginal CC
that wrote on the reciept. Now I'm stuck with a tv that has horrible ghosting problems. I also hooked up both of my pasonic through the same audio source to see if this was a problem across all crt's. There was no ghositng in my older TV and I viewed some dvds and games with great pq, but while looking at my 26" at the same time I could see the ghosting problem on all formats including my xbox 360, HD cable, DVD, and VCR. This tv sucks and I would recommend all of us who bought this tv to go to CC and demand a recall on this unit to at least give us credit to purchase another tv.

ps is it me or does this tv has a line of pixel on the right side of the tv that is discolored from the rest of the tv.

My 34" has a vertical line on the far right of the screen (about 1.5" from the screen edge.) Everything to the right of this line is a little brighter that to the left of it. It is only noticeable in 1080i when the image is bright, like the white ice in a hockey game. The line can be manipulated by stretching or moving the image in the service menu. Any ideas on what is causing this?

u mean when it gets big on the side, and gets to a normal size in the middle? if thats what you mean, then yes. its not that bad though..mayb 2-3 inches of large print, then it goes normal, then goes back to big. only happens in JUST though. 4:3, and FULL it doesnt happen. i could try and take a pic if u needed

This only happens in zoom, just, or full screen mode because the original image is being stretched to fit the screen.

Sorry for not describing my particular problem better. What you guys are describing is perfectly normal--the tv is doing what it should in each aspect as described in the manual itself. "FULL" aspect, for example, stretches only the edges of images, so text (like the CNN ticker) looks bigger on the edges and normal in the middle.

We all have properly running aspects on our respective HDTVs. But on my particular set, regardless of the aspect setting, the text looks wavy--that is, it is not running in a straight line from right to left. It is going up and down, in a wave pattern, as it moves across the screen. Static text and boxes, like those in a videogame start-up screen, have a slight tilt to them, again following the same wave pattern. The text doesn't become bigger or smaller, it gently moves up and down, like a raft on the ocean. Catch my drift?

I have the 26" panny and I have only one complaint thats only noticeable in certain colors.
When the screen is a shade of red or brown I have this 3 vertical lines all next to each other about 4" wide stretching from top to bottom. I was wondering if anybody else had this problem or know what this is cause from. Other than that I couldnt be more satisfied. I also had the 30" but it had a really bad horizon like curve on the top of the tube and it was a little too big for my room so I sold it to my friend.

I have been having the same ghosting issue with the panny CT-30WX15 set. I have had the tv since the middle of November and noticed the problem the first week when watching dvds or playing X-box 360 which ghosted on images that had a contrast between light and dark images. Unfortunately I did not purchase the circuit city warranty and so am dealing with panasonic directly. I called them back in the beginning of December and they referred me to an authorized panasonic repair shop. My original appointment was about a week before my 30 day return policy at Circuit City would have expired, but of course they didn't show up until about 2 weeks later. Two repairmen came to the house to look at the tv and stared at it as if they were looking at an alien (I'm not really sure if they knew what they were doing, one guy fiddled with the menu settings and I think maybe the other guy was only there to help carry the tv). I showed them the problem which they acknowledged they saw and all they really did was change the brightness and picture settings. They then said they would need to take the tv into the shop for a tech to look at as they did not know what the problem was and said to allow 7-10 business days. Of course I didn't get the feeling I was in good hands as they almost dropped the tv on the way out and I still don't think they knew what they were doing. Well I called them for the 2nd time today after 2 weeks to check on the status of the tv and was told that the tech did not see the problem in the shop and therefore cannot fix it and they cannot deliver the tv back to me until next wednesday. So basically I have been waiting 2 weeks for them to come and have been without my tv for another 3 weeks and will still have a tv with a ghosting issue once I get it back. When I get the tv back I will take a look at it to see if they actually did anything and call Panasonic to complain and hopefully actually get some help on this issue. (But at this point I'm not going to hold my breath)

Right, I had that feeling about the 26" at least, much like the Toshiba. Shame the 30" seems to have problems too. I guess that leaves the 30" Sony. From what I read here, the Samdung is second-rate, but I hope not because good CRTs are very hard to find these days.

Some of the folks reporting it are not really videophiles, by their own admission, so it must be obvious. The point is, there should be no ghosting at all. I think we are looking at component failure here. Granted, not a catastrophic failure of the set, but at least one component inside has failed or was defective off the assembly line. It should be taken care of before it gets worse. If enough owners complain to Panasonic, they may issue a recall.

Hey guys,I have the 34" and while I dont have any ghosting or geometry problems,I do have colors problems.
There's this yellow tinge on alot of white scenes and some greens and yellows have a neon/lime look. What is this exactly? Is it green push, yellow push or something else? None of the picture controls seem to fix this without seriously ruining the other colors.
Does anyone have an Idea on how to fix this via the service menu or something?

In response to jmanunc, no I did not have to pay anything for the service. Panasonic has a parts and labor warranty on the 30" set and I only had to show my sales receipt.
And the problem is very noticeable under the right conditions (ie a light image on a dark background) to the point where you see a ghost of the entire image up to half an inch to the right when watching dvds with a component input. I am beginning to wonder if this is a problem with this model or if I have a defective set.

Sounds like not enough blue. You need to do a proper greyscale calibration, which is best left to an ISF tech with color analyzer. A hobbyist or normal tech can do it with some kind of optical comparator, but not as accurately and quickly.
So if you're not ready to pay for an ISF calibration, you can try to eyeball it yourself if you can find the service menu codes online. If you're not that brave, try setting the color temperature to cool for now.

Hi, been watching this thread for awhile. :D

Anywho, I have the Panasonic CT-26WX15.
But I didnt have an HD source for a good month but I did have ghosting for sometime.

On the latter It did clear up when I did the following.
1: Run the set on 'Standard Video Settings' for either 480i or 480p
2: Make sure your brightness and picture are not super bright.

I had mine set like this for about a week and the ghosting cleared up.
So I set it back onto 'Vivid' with no super bright colors and it looks excellent at 480i, 480p and 1080i (Xbox 360) atm.

So try that and see if it goes away.

But the Geometry was horrible. >_<
Tweaked it in the service menu and now it looks how it should.

Xabora, what exactly were your geometry problems? I'm curious because I'd like to correct some waveiness in my set which appears on all aspects and modes. Re ghosting on the WX15s...

This sounds similar to overshoot (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6914281#post6914281), an issue inherent to the analog electronics of CRTs. (Some comments re overshoot on the Sonys.) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=6911105&&#post6911105) Or possibly some other feedthru/shielding/power-related issue.

Overshoot may be enhanced or diminished by various forms of edge-processing in the display, noise-reduction, scanning velocity modulation, sharpness and contrast, which may be why some notice it more in the default punched-up Vivid showroom modes, and less after the TV's been better-adjusted/calibrated. My best guess anyway.

Overshoot is a different issue than blooming btw (which is another characteristic of these TVs that can pretty easily be corrected by switching to one of the less-enhanced cinema modes or simply dialing contrast down to a more reasonable level, and doing most of your viewing in lower ambient nighttime-ish lighting.)

Overshoot is also different than overscan.

Well, I've been away awhile since I got my TV, a CT-34WX15, back in October.

I was pretty happy with it at first, despite some HD geometry problems.

Then I started to notice the ghosting, which at first I thought was due to the crappy analog tuner in my STB, or on my cable co's end, but I've since determined is endemic to this tv. It's barely noticeable in HD, but in SD it's very noticeable, depending on what's on the screen. As others have noted it's very noticeable in Master and Commander, due to all the dark scenes.

There's another issue, which I believe is "overshoot", which is particularly visible when small dark objects are on a light screen, like a long shot of players on a hockey rink, or small dark text on a light background, but I can live with it.

I really doubt if this is something that can be adjusted away through the service menu, so I expect I'll just have to live with it. Either that or hassle Panasonic and my retailer so many times that the replacement clause of the warranty kicks in, but then there's no guarantee the new set (if the same model) wouldn't have the same issue. Not the end of the world, but disappointing. I'm surprised Panasonic would push units out their doors with these sorts of PQ issues - lowers my respect for them as a company.

Apparently 'pure' 1080i sources have LITTLE to 0 ghosting. (Tested this with DoA4 and Condemned)

And I love it so far. I get buyers remorse after every major purchase, but 4 days after buying this TV, I'm very happy with it. I only have standard def digital cable right now being fed to the TV by composite cables. I'm picking up my HDTV box and an HDMI cable tomorrow. I can't wait to finally see HD!

A few points...

I have zero "ghosting", at least nothing that I can notice, (and I gave myself quite the headache from staring closely at the screen for imperfections right after I brought it home.)

The darks are VERY dark on this set. But the SD picture is about 100X better than the Toshiba I was thinking of getting.

I'm learning that HDTV's can bring out the imperfection of copied DVD's that have been "shrunk" to fit a standard 4 gig DVD-R. Store bought DVD's look stunning, but my copies that have been shrunk to fit on 1 DVD-R don't look nearly as good. On my old SDTV, you couldn't tell the difference between the 2. I guess I'll have to buy my DVD's now, or use dual layer DVD-R's :)

Is it just my set or do they all make a LOUD gong noise when turned on? I'm afraid one day I'll turn it on and something will explode inside the TV. It really is a disturbing noise emanating from a TV that I just spent quite a bit of money (for me anyway) on. Is it supposed to sound like that or did is something wrong?

One last quick question, should I definitely go for HDMI? Any pro's and cons' vs. Component for HD and SD?

Thanks

I have just bought one also in Dec. Yes its a popper allright. I made sure to get a 3 yr wrnty. I like it so far (fingers crossed). I have a HD STB Tuner (CC Probrand) and OTA antenna. As for the color, it depends on the picture sent, different programs and commercials have different tints for the face etc. So you'll never get a perfect tint for everything. Also I thought ghoasting was a functon of the multipath analog signals but I'm not sure.

One guy who has the 30" version heard a loud pop and now his picture is a bit fuzzy. He bought his set in october:

Also no 2 TV's are exact after mfgr. some get lemons and some don't.

Panasonic and Sony always had the best CRTs of the major brands, so if Panasonic is not good enough then I wouldn't expect Samsung to be any better. You can get a good Sony KV-30HS420 for that money. Better to swap it out than get into endless repair delays.

I dont think any HDTV has had a model not complained about in some form. Also, the setting on one 26 Pan will not be exact to another 26 Pan via the service menu. So when someone asks what settings are they using, dont expect the same results on the one you want to mess with. I agree there shouldnt be warping but.... a ticker at the bottom of my set sloped a bit so I tilted the picture only to see a ticker on another TV program tilted the other way.

I feel some geometry and almost all color setting are specific to what the station provides as a signal unless I have a trapazoid problem which I don't seem to have.

I also have overscan mainly of FOX 61 and accept this as also part of the programming from the station. All sorts of geometry variables come into play with wide screen HDTV and is very dependent to the type of programming provided by the TV station.

A funny note is the srobe lights and special lighting effects they use on Smackdown cause some pixelation so it does appear some problems are TV program specific.

P.S.

I must admit that I have been using a Zenith 25" for the last 8 years and I have not had cable TV in that time either. So I've adapted to snowy analog pictures. So with this TV and the probrand STB and a good antenna I feel like I'm in a an eye candy store with this new TV. (keeping fingers crossed).

Panasonic and Sony always had the best CRTs of the major brands, so if Panasonic is not good enough then I wouldn't expect Samsung to be any better. You can get a good Sony KV-30HS420 for that money. Better to swap it out than get into endless repair delays.
Well... my set isnt having the problems tho... except with 1 game oddly.
Halo2 is causing it to overshoot (ghosting anonmoly) it doesnt happen with any other game.
I've checked this over and over... and it seems to be one game causing this effect on my set and its Halo2 running at an upscaled 720p to 1080i.

Sorry about not having the pics atm... cant find the USB cable to the camera.

I have noticed the ghosting too. It is worse than I originally thought and I know I would have noticed it without even reading this thread. I have the opposite problem of ZRX. I notice the ghosting in HD, but I don't notice at all when watching regular Directv hooked up with an s-video cable. I notice the ghosting in HD when hooked up with Component or the HDMI input.

I'm really not a videophile. I mean, I own an HDTV because any fool can see how much better an HDTV signal is than a SD one. And I like good dark black levels. And I notice weird colors like the plasma I tried produced, and I notice ghosting when I see it. But mostly I just want a bright, crisp, clear picture.

Anyway, I don't watch a lot of DVDs, and haven't since I got my 34CT-WX15. The ones I do watch are mostly concert videos. But I decided I needed to look into this a little more the other night, so I threw LOTR:Fellowship of the Ring into my player and fired it up. You know what? It looked really good, and any ghosting was not too severe and only noticeable in very particular conditions - bright vertical lines on medium-dark backgrounds make the ghosting most visible, but sometimes you can also see, when a person is facing to the right of the screen, ghosting of their facial profile and skin color. But it's really not too bad.

So, why was the signal from the STB looking so bad? Well, one difference is that I had set it to output a 480i signal, so that I could make use of the "Just" setting on the TV, which you don't get with 480p or 1080i signals. Anyway, I reset my STB to output 480p instead of 480i for SD programming, and now it looks better, too. Plus, with a 480p signal you get your choice of color pallettes to use (SD or HD), and in my opinion the HD palette looks better. But I've lost "Just" mode - no biggie, I've never really cared for the distortion it causes, anyway.

I may have overstated my dissatisfaction a little. I was just a little disappointed that the picture isn't perfect, that's all. Hell, I don't know if "perfect" even exists, but the current HD Panasonic plasmas probably come closest amongst sets that I've looked at - but the price/performance ratio just wasn't there for me.

OH, btw, I've got my STB hooked up to my TV with both component and HDMI cables. There's little if any difference between the picture when changing between them.

So I've been sending off e-mails to Panasonic tech support in regards to my extreme ghosting, but I've reached a dead end. They absolutely refuse to service my set or have one of their techs look at it. They won't even answer any questions I ask in regards to how this problem could be fixed.

Unfortunately I purchased my television set from Sears Canada and, unbeknownst to me, Sears saves money on their sets by not paying for warranty coverage. Sears honours the Panasonic warranty, but they have their own “technician” who deals with every make and model under the sun attend your home. As I’ve mentioned before, he was simply clueless when it came to specifics. He had no idea how to access the service menu or what any of the values represented. He simply adjusted my picture from Standard to Vivid, degaussed the set and said that my problems were corrected.

Needless to say I have no intention of paying out of pocket to have a true Panasonic tech attend my home and attempt to fix my television. I refuse to pay to get my set’s picture quality to where it already should be. Sears has advised me that I can likely exchange my set for another or switch models altogether. Since the ghosting problem seems to be so widespread at this time, I think I’ll pay an extra few hundred dollars and go with a comparable Sony model.

I certainly hope other Panasonic owners however keep after Panasonic over this problem. It’s a beautiful set for the price and certainly shouldn’t be suffering from the ghosting that many of us have.

I think you'll be better spending the money to "upgrade" your set rather than for the tech to perform warranty work that should be free to begin with! Is there no service center that you can take the set to instead of asking for a house service call? Seems that would be a decent compromise...after all, you'll need to carry the set back to the store!

For those with Ghosting; did this happen right out of the box or after you've had the set for awhile.

One thing not mentioned is that your particular set could have gone thru rough handeling from the factory to the store were you bought it from. Defects in Aperature grill monitors are sometimes caused by rough handeling. Fragile or Fra-jilly?

Now if the TV became inoperable and it was in warranty and unfixable, would they exchange the TV?

Hey . . .

I just got one of these. I am using it with an LG LST-3510a for OTA HD.

Questions . . .

1. Is anybody else's green drive low ? (I've got the Avia Disk.)

2. Is there a way, in the service menus, to default 4:3 480p to 4:3 ?

Anyway . . . I bought mine, as a discontinuted model, from American TV in Peoria. The remote doesn't work (probably the IR Receiver), and they're two weeks out on parts. Since it's a discontinuted model, they won't exchange it. *&^%#$ Since you can only change the aspect with the remote, I have to watch all my 4:3 480p in that silly stretch widescreen.

Thanks so much. I was getting pretty worried about it. To find out it's actually a *good* thing is great to know. I still haven't seen high def on this TV because my cable company never has any damn HD boxes in stock. I'm thinking of buying one because I'm getting so sick of waiting to rent one.

In your opinion, should I go for component or HDMI? I think both HDDVD and BluRay will be HDMI only so I'm leaning towards HDMI.

P.S. Still no "ghosting", at least nothing that I can notice. Lines are near perfect in every mode too, unlike some ghastly Toshiba geometry problems I've seen in stores. I *do* think I have overscanh though. I'll have to go into the service menu one of these days when I build up the courage.

It appears the Panasonic factory didn't want to spend the time fine tunning the TV geometry and simply adjusted the horizontal and vertical sizes to hide the geometry imperfections thus creating the overscan.

It took about an hour but I went thru all the setting, recorded the defaults, and messed around with every setting with the TV tuned into the weather station that has lines and circles (suns) to use as a guide etc.

I can't say I got the set perfect but its better than it was when it came from the factory. It took adjusting quite a few items because each one adjusts geometry in a specific area (top, bottom, corners, middle etc.) and it wasnt as easy as adjusting a computer monitor. All in all the setting I adjusted were:

V-C, V-S, H-WID, SIDE, TRAP, BTMG, TOPG, PCCLG, PCC. aS STATED PREVIOUSLY i USED v-RAS and VE-AMP but found V-S and V-C to make those adjustments redundant.

Well lets see how these settings sit with my eyes for now.

P.S. Ther is a shortcut to the service menu as stated. Hold down the volume loweing button at the TV set and hit recall 3 times fast on the remote then power off at the remote.

"u cant just adjust the sides (top, bottom, left and right)?"

Oh you can but you'll find out you'll need a combo of setting since they all effect each other. Moving the sides is easy; its the bowing and corner distortions that are hard to straighten out. You fix one piece of geometry then find out something else gets distorted in the process.

One this that was surprising is that by adjusting one setting caused anoter setting to change and actually its value also. So go thru and jot down all the defaults before changing anything. You cant rely on the defalt for just the value you are changing since it will affect other values.

I noticed values that I did not mess with had changed when I went back into the menue last night.

I cant find anything to adjust horizontal bowing near the bottom of the screen.

Chris0381,

If the Pannies work anything like the Sonys, it's possible that some or many parameters may store different values depending on the signal (eg 480p vs. 1080i), aspect ratio (16:9 vs 4:3), input, etc.

Most of the parameters on the Sony in fact work this way. And many are also interrelated in fairly complex ways as well. Without some kind of service manual or guide, it's pretty difficult to navigate the different sensitivities of the controls.

I ensured that I could get back to default, so that went ok. I went ahead and called the CC Advantage number and they are sending a tech out 2/14/06. To bad its not sooner. I just told them that overscan is excessive and some ghosting is noticeable in text, so I need someone to come out and adjust this set. I'm going to do this on my own in the meantime, but I am curious if the tech can do anything further. I do have some slight ghost on text (it appears to the left of the text). From viewing distance the ghosting simply blur's the text a little bit. It's by no means serious. I noticed on this set that you want to put yourself 6-10 feet away if you really want to appreciate the picture.

All I know is that if the tech they send out doesn't know anything about the SM thats only going to piss me off. Anyway, I'll keep you posted.

"It appears that the vertical center needs to be moved to the left a few pixels, but without moving the left and right sides."

That sure does make sense and that why this is more difficult than adjusting a computer monitor. I seems these settings work in some areas of the screen while leaving other areas completely untouched and you have to find the right combo to adjust the area were you see the imperfections.

I would also be surprised if anyone can find a service tech that is willing to spend the time and knowledgable of all these settings. It seems its a factory mfg area of concentration and not a service tech interest. They can fix things that are completely broken maybe but to correct a picture the way we want it may be out of their reach. I bet some of us here could teach the service tech a thing or 2 they don't know.

Hello, long time reader first time poster. I've got a question for the all the other owners out there, when you output 480p to the set do you notice that the image seems quite dark? I've tried 3 players and to get a decent picture I usually have to boost contrast and brightness quite high, and was wondering if this was normal or just my set? I'm just worried about damaging the set. Sorry if the question seems a bit stupid I'm quite new to this, thanks!

For which set, the CT-30WX15? Look under the Other Adjustments menu under the Picture menu. There's something like HD color or whatever thats selectable when using 480p input. Sorry I'm at work so I can't give you an exact name.

Even with hd color set it still is pretty dim compared to 480i, and won't that make the colors look off unless I'm using a player that can output hd color? I mean I can get a decent picture but I've usually got to set brightness near 50 (45-47) and contrast near 40 (40-42). I'm just mostly wondering if these are dangerous levels even though the set doesn't apear to displaying a really bright picture. Oh and the set is the 34wx15 and the player is a Panasonic s77. ( I know the panny can do hd color with hdmi but I prefer using component due to mb)

I wouldn't worry about the numbers unless you maxed out and still needed adjustment. Those numbers should allow variations from how it is setup in the SM. If you aren't getting the highly noticeable "white glow" that either a high contrast and/or high brightness will create then I dont think there is any reason that a high number should be considered a problem. If you have a service plan then have someone come out to calibrate the set. I've noticed with my set that a medium to medium-high picture, high brightess, medium tint, medium-low color settings are needed in order to create an acceptable picture to me. Experiment with all the settings together this way and see if that yields better results for you.

Well, I must have gotten one of the last new CT-26XW15's around a couple of weeks ago! So far, I am pleased with the set. It's the perfect size for my bedroom. After adjustments, I haven't seen any noticeable "ghosting" or picture overscan or distortion. My video settings (for HDMI input) are:

MODE: STANDARD
PICTURE: 35
BRIGHTNESS: 39
COLOR: 15
TINT: 34
SHARPNESS: 11
COLOR TEMP: NORMAL

As for the audio, the sound seems to be better with AI (sound equalization) turned OFF. AI makes everything sound flat and somewhat muffled, in my opinion.

Well I've seen the ghosting, I wonder if it's just a bad batch of sets, mine was built last May. I've also got some pretty noticable overscan at 480p, the geometry isn't bad though. As for the ghosting I find I notice it less and less as time goes by.

If you get the full warranty interval, yes. If not, you have no idea how many hours are on the TV, so I'd think twice about it. Look to see when it was manufactured, and try to figure how long it's been sitting there as a display unit. Is it from a reputable store that will give a decent exchange policy? The TV is a good one in my estimation, and has nice picture quality for high def and DVDs.

I don't know if this has already been created, but this is a thread I created where we can discuss about Panasonic's current CRT HDTV models: CT-26WX15, CT-30WC15, CT-30WX15, and CT-34WX15. Own one of these Panasonic models and want to comment about it, post it here. Are you thinking of buying a Panasonic, post it here. We should reduce the number of new threads created regarding Panasonic. Enjoy...

You could try
PICTURE 35
BRIGHTNESS 58
COLOR 24
TINT 34
SHARPNESS whatever

Doesn't really help you on overscan. If you need help on that and have a warranty plan then call a service tech out.

Hi.

I have been trying to read through this whole thread, and so far I have had no luck finding an answer to these questions, so I'm gonna ask them.

Lately, when I have been watching DVD movies (using the 360) I have noticed a few problems that really bother me.

While watching the Avengers animated movie and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, I have noticed horizontal lines appearing in my screen in some instances. They are not black lines, but look more like when you get up close to a regular TV. More like ridges. Can anyone help identifying the source of this problem.

Another problem, that is more evident, is how a lot of times I get a white or gray silhouette around some shapes. Especially people. Is that what they refer to as "ghosting"? Is there a way to get rid of it.

Also. I'm still trying to get my colors straight. Any advice regarding "sharpness" and how much in tune should "brightness" and "picture" be?

That's my bit. Thanks for reading. Sorry if these questions have been asked and answered. I really did try reading through the whole thing. Also, if this is not the right place to ask questions, I'm really sorry. I would appreciate anyone kind enough to re-direct me.

Thank you all.

Hello,

I picked up a CT-30WC15 late last summer. We've just gotten settled into our new apartment and I'm going to calibrate the set to the best of my ability. I thought I would share my calibration experience with everyone on this thread - judging by earlier posts people seemed to be interested in settings values. I will be recording all the values from the service menus as well as the user controls and will post those values as I adjust them. I hope somebody will get some value from this information! I'll post later tonight with my current setup and default service menu values.

MaY I ask what universal remote people are using for this TV. I havea good one but it wont control the inputs TV/Video button.
I'm using the Harmony 880. It's my first universal remote but so far I've been very happy with it. The Logitech database that programs the remote has codes to access each input directly. That means you can hit one button and change to HDMI, hit another button and go to Component 1, etc. This is really nice and helps keep the remote insynch with the actual settings on the tube.

Another problem, that is more evident, is how a lot of times I get a white or gray silhouette around some shapes. Especially people. Is that what they refer to as "ghosting"? Is there a way to get rid of it.

This would be ghosting or it may be edge enhancement on a DVD. Earlier in the forum, some people mentioned having ghosting problems. What are your sources (DVD, XB, cable) when you notice this? Also, what is the model of your tv?

Also. I'm still trying to get my colors straight. Any advice regarding "sharpness" and how much in tune should "brightness" and "picture" be?
The sharpness control should be set pretty low. The 0-15 range works best for me. Honestly, I haven't been able to tell much of a difference when it is low. If the sharpness is set high, you will see some edge-enhancement like effects (a white outline around edges).

mgsr posted near the beginning of this thread with values of Picture: 31, Brightness: 34. My values are much higher than this (I'll get back to you with my values tonight). The proper values depend highly on your service menu settings and I believe default service menu values are different for each tv - please correct me if I'm wrong on this.

Have a nice day!

I found a way to enter the service menu in my Panasonic CT-26WX15. This also works for other Panasonic TV models (including CT-30WC15, CT-30WX15, and CT-34WX15). Here's how you do it:

Power on your TV
Go to menu and set antenna to CABLE
Then, go to sleep timer in the menu and set it to 30
Exit menu and go to channel 124
Then, adjust volume to 0 on the remote
Then, at the front of the TV, press the volume down and the word "CHK" in red appears
Finally, press the power button on the remote
You will then see a big service menu at the middle of the screen

To adjust, use the volume buttons to adjust the values. To change each category, use the channel buttons.

To exit the service menu, press the power button on the remote, and it will return to "CHK" in red at the upper left hand corner. Then, press the power button at the front of the TV to turn off the TV. If you want to see a summary or self-check, press the power button and action button at the same time for two seconds instead.

Don't forget to copy down all of the original values on a separate piece of paper before you adjust the values. I'm still browsing it, but I don't have the time to adjust the screen right now. It looks kind of complicated to me.

Let me know which setting can let me adjust the top horizontal line.
Hey waltchan, what happened to your Panasonic CRT? Did you return that one also?

Hey waltchan, what happened to your Panasonic CRT? Did you return that one also?

of course, he thinks its his job to do quality control and product testing for all the first tier companies (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba)

apparently though with all testing of products, sometimes you break/damage them by accident

too bad these companies just do not know that he is actually doing this

and Walter Chan is the reason for restocking fees if I have ever seen one

as far as I can remember you returned the TV to circuit city

what you want this thread to be deleted now?

you always got to start something in a thread you have no business in, so how do you like it when someelse is your thread calling you out?

maybe it would just be better if the whole CRT forum was deleted, is that what you want or hope to accomplish?

maybe you should take a step back and look at what you could do differently

maybe not asking people to donate their TVs to you, maybe quit with the lies, maybe stop disguising yourself for something you are not?

if anyones the problem here, its you buddy!

you cannot stop, but I am tired of seeing reasonable threads be deleted cause of your mental unstableness

Hi everyone,

I recorded all the default service menu values for my CT-30WC15. I have a temp site containing the info, which is listed as my webpage in my profile (stupid 5 post no link rule...)

I do believe service menu defaults are different for every individual tv so it probably isn't a good idea to set your values exactly to mine. Am I right on this point?

I recorded values for: 1080i full, 480p full/4:3/zoom, and 480i full/just/4:3/zoom. These were all the options as far as I could tell, though there's a 'DW' option grayed out and I'm not sure what that means.

So the fun's about to start. I'll post as I calibrate with some commentary on the process.

My setup includes a Denon AVR-2105 and a Samsung HD-850 outputting over HDMI and component. After just doing standard user adjustments, 1080i over HDMI looks much better than 1080i over component (after applying the remote hack). The colors seem much more vivid and the image appears much clearer.

I'm contemplating upgrading my DVD player to an Oppo. Do you know if our line of Pannys suffer the macroblock bug? I haven't read a lot about MB problems on CRT. The only thread I could find was located in a Sony thread, which made it seem like direct view CRTs handle MB pretty well. I would assume the Pannys would handle MB pretty well but I'd like some opinions if anyone's got 'em.

Also, do you think I would see a lot of benefit to upgrading the player now? I plan on buying a high def player as soon as the format war settles down.

Enjoy the service menu values and thanks for all the help!
-Bob

Thank you all.

I had the tech out to adjust geometry on my CT30WX15 to minimize some horizontal bowing that I have. He had to remove the back panel and he referred to the adjustments as "bean benders" and was able to get the geometry looking quite a bit better than before. I'm getting some ghosting now or at least I notice it this time around. Maybe its not ghosting, maybe its edge enhancement that is getting exaggerated by this set, I dunno. All I know is quite a few SD channels and some DVD's create this problem although not all do. I dunno if some stations use edge enhancement or not. Its exactly as you describe with a silhouette of a person, or logo, to the right. I do know I have the contrast at 50% and the brightness at a respectable level. I've got the sharpness all the way down but I haven't been able to distinguish a difference with the sharpness set at either extreme or anywhere between. That may have something to do with VM or one of the other settings. I got the guys coming out again, but unfortunately circuit city takes two-three weeks to come out each time. I'll keep you guys posted.

I'm using the XBOX 360 to watch my DVDs. I get them in a few of my DVDs. Noticed the ghosting along with weird lines in Harry Potter and the Avengers. Is that "interlacing"? I also notice ghosting in some scenes of Batman Begins and Serenity. Some have it more than others, and it rarely bothers me unless I'm looking for it. It also happens on some TV chanels, almost never on games, except Condemned: Criminal Origins.

Question to the poster who posted the picture of his overscan solution for the 360...

I also suffer from this, but my TV tech knowledge is zero. Would it be too complicated for someone like me to fix my overscan problem? I checked out some professionals, but they would charge me almost as much as my TV -- I have the 26" one, got it off the special on Circuit City -- and that overscan is really annoying in some games.

Anyway, in case some people did not read it before, I see horizontal lines when watching some DVDs. Very few actually. Like two. The lines are not black, but look more like ripples or when you get too close to a standard TV. I was wondering whether that was interlacing or not.

Any help on reducing the "ghosting" is appreciated, too. Sorry for the double post.

Reading through the forum again, it looks like many people had problems with ghosting on these tvs. There is some advice for tweaking ghosting in posts 308-328 on this thread.

I'm not sure if that is interlacing. Interlacing looks most prominent on small text and fast moving objects. When outputting a computer to an interlaced display, text looks very jittery and can hurt your eyes.

Try 'em all... use "wut" settings look good to you (stand, vivid, normal. cool etc.).

Brightness, tint, color, picture vary from set to set (same make/model). One individual's TV with the same settings as yours will probably look quite different.

Hey all, i'm new here, and i'm hoping that somebody can help me on with my overscan problem on my CT-34WX50.

I used the tigerdave test pattern, and viewed it using 1080i on my xbox 360. (edit: i made the pic smaller so the thread didn't have that annoying "stretching")
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/IWWKD-PaniOverscan.JPG

so I did the service menu trick described, but some things were different, like hitting the power button on my remote turns my tv off!
plus, the options described here sound nothing like what i have... I've taken some pictures to describe what I see:

after i do the service menu trick, here's the main menu that comes up:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/Pani1.jpg

when i select "Concurrent 97/98/99" here's the menu that shows up:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/Pani2.jpg
Bigger view:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/Pani3.jpg

here is the same menu when i'm on my 360:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/Pani4.jpg

when i select "i.Trace64-96" here's a pic of what i get:
http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2003-5/185413/Pani5.jpg

if anybody knows how to navigate the service menu on a CT34WX50, i'd greatly appreciate it!

Enjoy...
Do you have one of these sets? If so, which one?

A great question that couldn't be more relevant or on topic. I'd love to know where, and how, people can get information like this without actually owning the product in question. I think that's information that would be useful to the entire forum readership. It's certainly an easy validation process, if nothing else.

No one with any integrity should have any problems giving a straight answer to a question like this.

Completely a lie. I have posted all the correct service menu settings and procedures and have helped many Panasonic owners to get their TVs to look better. Go look at post #4.

I'm glad cireaasirefan created this thread and listed the service menu access code. This thread has been very useful for many people, including me.

I don't know all the history between everyone here but I find the many posts ragging on cireaasirefan to be disruptive and a little childish. I don't understand how making accusations about somebody who hadn't posted here in a long time could be beneficial to anyone, even if those accusations were true, because he had not posted until people started writing about him. I don't care if he doesn't own one of these TVs anymore because he isn't making posts where TV ownership is vital.

You can know something useful about a TV without owning that TV. If someone asked me what the service code was for a TV and I happened to know of a source containing that information, I would gladly share it. I don't see any harm in that.

Maybe cireaasirefan made some false claims before - in which case pointing out the fallacies in his posts is a very good thing to do. But please leave it at that and move on. As a new member, I'm not "in on the joke" and would much rather read posts that are related to the topic of this thread - the Panny WX15s.

No. schuview is right. squonk and others are disrupting the forums with their spamming, flaming, and flooding posts. It does not matter if schuview is a new user or not, or if he knows the history or not. He has every right to let his thoughts be known on this matter.

I have said this many times. The anti-cireasirefan gang (actually it is mostly squonk these days, a fact of which I do appreciate from the others) may think they are in the right, but what they are trying to do is simply take moderation into their own hands when they have not been given the power to do so. Thus their tactics consist of flooding the forums with crap in an attempt to either ruin the forums or drive cireasafan away. So far, the only thing that has happened is that these forums have been flooded and ruined.

I am amazed that you people cannot see what you are doing. How old is squonk anyway? He's probably in his teens or twenties too (kny3twalker is, I think) so you guys don't deserve to be harping on someone like cireasirefan (Ratman, I'm not talking about you BTW. I don't understand what is the driving force behind the losers squonk and kny3twalker. As Ratman said, all that will happen is that all these good threads will be deleted. After that, no valuable info will be left on these boards and it will suck, if it doesn't already.

Who cares if waltchan "started" these threads? There is lots of valuable information contained within them from many users other than waltchan. If squonk and kny3twalker are so petty that they are willing to cause the loss of 90% of the useful information on these boards simply because waltchan started the thread, they don't deserve the privilege of speaking here.

Answer my question prickly porcupine. How does asking someone if they own a Panasonic, nothing more, constitute a thread disruption? Come on, I'm waiting.

You are disrupting this thread 10 times over with your absurd attempts at playing moderator, and its pretty apparant who you really are. If this thread is closed, you will only have yourself to blame for making a mountain out of a molehill.

Thans for the bruzzi link. That's a very nice concise list of all the Panasonic service menu access codes.

As far as cireaasirefan posting the service menu code - of course he's not a hero. This is the official WX15 thread so someone had to post the service menu access code at some point in time.

I think there is validity to the point of view of someone who doesn't know the history of this controversy. This thread isn't about that controversy; it's about the WX15 series of Panasonic TVs and bringing up that controversy just bogs it down. I think new members with something valuable to say may be scared off when the topic they want to talk about isn't being talked about.

I'm just trying to say that we're all here to learn about the WX15 so let's keep the personal talk off this public forum. This thread will be the best it can be if the TVs are the main subject. I'll do my part and shut my pie hole about all this now. :)

squonk, THANK YOU! kam407, people will post a response if they have one. Posting the same question over and over and over again is not going to make you many friends and you're definitely not going to get an answer. Can you post a picture of a problematic scene? There's no difference between cinema, vivid, and standard besides the preset values and what you change those values to. Try turning sharpness all the way off. But really, you need to experiment and see what looks best to you.

I totally agree with schuview. I don't care who posted the SM codes, all I know is that it really help me out greatly, Not only was I able to tweak my brand new 34wx15 but I was also able to use this imformation from this thread to tweak my 11 year old 27 inch Panasonic Gaoo tv also. So now I have next to no overscan, completely no bowing or tilting on my Gaoo. And all these years I never even new I had.

It seems that Panasonic may have the same method to get into their SM on any Panny tv. So even though this thread was about the wx15 models, It sure help me out on my other tv. And I hope they do not get rid of this thread.

And Squonk, I have only just become a member here, but I have been a regular visitor for a couple of months now. I don't know the history with you and some other members here, but just from my standpoint, you contribute absolutley squat. Maybe you use to be a helpfull member here, but from the looks of things you have maybe become bored here and now everybody including new members, will have to keep puting up with your useless contributions.

Like I said, I don't know your history with some of the other members, but maybe you can just drop the constant garble and start helping some people out. That's what these forums are for whether you own a Panny, Toshiba, dlp, Plasma or whatever. Peace.

I have a neat little s-video to composite cable adapter for my 4yr old video card and thought I'de give it a try using a 25 ft cable since the TV is downstairs. I used a program called power strip and I set the resolution to 1152 x 648 (HDTV preset). Eventhough the text is blurry, the video and graphics are real nice and now I can watch video on a larger screen and wont have to be near the computer to see my live streaming European soccer scores. I'm actually thinking about now getting the webcast for wrestlemania.

I thought I'de contribute something positive to change the vibes here. I never realized the graphics would come out so nice using composite video.

You brought up a good question. I just don't know and I will refere you to this form here :http://www.highdefforum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=44

I tried all sorts of resloutions and decided the 1152 x 648 was the best I could get. The higher resolutions gave massive overscan as so did the lower ones. I may but a 25' s-video cable if I find myself using it a lot. A 25' dvi to hdmi cable is about $75 and not worth the cost.

I hope this helps.

You need a receiver, you need an antenna.
Or...
you need to subscribe to CableTV and get a CableTV receiver.
Or...
you need subscribe to SatelliteTV and get a SatelliteTV receiver.

Check your local retailers and/or perform some online searches. There are no secrets if you put a little effort into it.

Go to CC and pick up the probrand digitalstream reciever for $220 that will get you the digital signals from an antenna.

Go to radioshack and buy there doublebowtie antenna from their website $20 or go to the shop and buy their indoor power antenna for about $49.00.

If you desire to get further stations then buy an outdoor antenna and mount it someplace.

Your good to go.

The WC15 is very similar to the WX15, it's just Panasonic making a model for different retailers to sell. As you know manufacturers do this so retailers don't have to price match. Samsung went to great lengths with their CRT TV's a couple of years ago, 1 digit difference so Sears doesn't have to price match BB etc.

http://service.us.panasonic.com/operman/findmanual.aspx?model=CT30WC15
a tidbit from another thread

" Also check the Circuit City user reviews on the CT30WX15 (CT30WC15 at Sam's Club)"

On the front of the owners manual it states CT-30WC15, CT-30WX15, CT-34WC15, CT-34WX15.

Same TV, slightly different aesthetics.

The CT-30WC15 is a slightly stripped down version of the CT-30WX15 but they both have the same tube with identical video performance over component and hdmi.

WX: 4 composite inputs, black trim, 3D Y/C filter
WC: 3 composite inputs, grey trim, no comb filter

As far as I know, comb filters are only used with composite inputs so if most of your watching is through a digital cable box or DVD, then you will get the same video performance. The black trim will give you better contrast than grey trim in a lit room but I don't think you'll see much of a difference, if any, if you're viewing under proper home theater ambience :p

I bought the WC15 at Sam's late last summer when the 2005 Taus were still widely available. I recearched the X and C sets and found the only cut I cared about was the downgraded grey trim. I couldn't justify spending an extra two hundred for that and have been quite happy with my budget Tau.

Comb filters are also used for the coaxile input the screw on connection i mean just for an FYI;)

I've read every post in this thread and this was the only one that described what I have been experiencing.

The difference with me is that there is thin (but very noticable in dark scenes or dark screens) vertical line on the left side of my screen that is slightly brighter than the rest of the screen.

I have gone into the service menu to correct overscan and I was thinking perhaps this line is a creation of my screwing with the overscan........

The overscan has been fixed as I can see everything I want to (I'm using an Xbox 360) but while playing games or watching movies I get this thin vertical lighter colored area on the left side......anyone else experience this?

Porcupine2
03-22-06, 04:19 PM
Just curious, I don't own one of these sets, but does your vertical "line" go away if you increase the overscan, to try to push it off the sides of the screen? Or is it always in the same physical spot regardless of your overscan settings?

Imix1320
03-22-06, 04:45 PM
I can push the line off the screen, effectively hiding it.

I like to see the whole picture though.

And even if I did push it off, 1080i games look lopsided afterwards.

I'd try two things . . .

1. Take your xbox (and the cables) somehwere else you can use it in 1080i.

2. Find something else to plug into your monitor that can produce 1080i. Use the same inputs . Make sure you chage the cables, too.

I use 1080i for my HD OTA STB through Component, and my upconvert DVD player through HDMI. I have never seen anything like this.

I'm sorry, if these things were obvious, or can't help you.

Hey all,

I have the CT-26WX15 version of this set, and I just connected it to my home theatre speakers and receiver. However, I don't have digital cable so I couldn't connect them through digital audio. So for now, I'm using the Amplifier Connection (TO AUDIO AMP) on the back of the TV to hear sound through my speakers. But, when I go to the TV setup menu and select "SPEAKERS OFF & FIXED AUDIO OUT" to control the volume through my receiver, I hear a high pitch buzzing noise emitted through the television speakers. I don't hear the noise through my home theatre speakers - just the TV speakers (the ones I don't want ANY sound from in the first place). Has anyone else experienced this connecting the TV to an external amp? Any solutions? Thanks for any help you can give. I already emailed Panasonic, but the last email I sent to them I received a pretty crappy response.

Which by the way, while I'm on the topic, has anyone successfully connected their computer to this TV through the HDMI port on the back? Would a DVI-to-HDMI adapter work? Panasonic's reply was "this was not meant to occur". Thanks boys, a little more information please? :D

Thanks again for any information. I love these forums, they helped me decide on my home theatre actually!
