Good Idea. I was thinking of make another disk also (i did 7 & 8) and had also mentioned it to bclews. if you want any help just let me know. My list of movies is in my signature. If you want I can take some scenes for you. I would just need a way to get them to you. FTP or other.

I was going to do a disk but it looks like you took some of the scenes I was going to use so I will mention a couple you could add for different movies:

Gone In 60 seconds: Eleanor scene
Final Destination 2: Highway crash scene
Robots: I don't have the chapter stamp but when the robot leaves the subway.
Polar Express: Very beginning as the train first comes in.



If I have time I was actually thinking of combining discs 4-8 as there are so many repeated scenes. Probably go down to 2-3 disks I would hope.

So are these discs the same ones as the other thread, just that you have to pay for them?

I think the concert DVD's is a great idea. From the DD's that have gone out so far, the Dianna Krall and Godsmack are prety good. I am new to the whole concert DVD scene, what are the "must watch" concerts?

Queen was used on one of the dts demo dvds. Not our demo dvds, dts itself- disc 6 I believe. But audio only.

Queen has also released some of its concerts and music videos in dts, but the video quality if pretty bad.

I am still amassing the final clips for DVD9 and DVD10. I'm basically waiting for The Island to come out on video so I can use the freeway chase scene.

Once that's done I can begin the authoring process with bclews. I've already chosen bclews, tkwok, and kweezr to beta test the final products prior to release.

I will need a group of torrent admins and end users with dvd burners to start doling out 9 and 10. Dwien has already emailed me to be a torrent distributor so he's on the final distro list. I'll need a list of 2 more torrent admins and 2-3 dvd users with burners.

I been able to make two test discs using deshrink and I what I've found so far is interesting. The amount of bass impact really differs from scene to scene, even though it is a direct data copy from the original. You gotta credit a good mixer in the studio who really cares about giving your home theater as much surround and bass information as possible.

Example: The clip from Tomorrow Never Dies is extremely active, but if you follow it again Air Force 1, you'll think a lot of the bass is diminished, forcing you to raise the volume.

Otherwise, the clips are looking pretty good.

The creation of a concert-based demo dvd should either be the master HT Demo Tree thread or in a new thread since this thread deals with the tracks listed on the 1st post.

But I agree, the music dvd should be a great disc if/when created.

Just want to thank all you guys in advance. I got the 1st two discs and they are a staple in my theater. I actually didn't think I would use them that much, but it is amazing how many time we have folks come over for a drink or for diner and don't have time to watch a movie, but they want to "see it in action". Also I have used the discs in set up and checking out others systems.

You guys put a lot of effort int hese, really appreciate it!!!

The final beta discs were sent over the xmas weekend. I've updated and modified the menu and graphics to better make the navigation of 9 and 10 easier.

I haven't heard from the beta testers yet but hopefully the seeders/torrent servers will receive their copy by next week.

A note to all: These are the 1st discs I've have ever authored in my life, so there are a few errors that in retrospect could have been corrected.
1. The "Play All" feature will either work or not work on your player. I think because of the multitude of titles I hav may overstretched the capabilities of the authoring system

2. Some of titles cannot be skipped forward using the Next Chapter button. The reason for this is simply: Some clips extends over two chapters. It was necessary to re-author the clips using rejig or similar program. As a result, you may experience either a pause or judder when the chapter break occurs.

3. One of the tracks is recorded in Dolby prologic! I don't know how (well, actually I do), but when authored 1st contact it sounded fine until tkwok pointed out to me that the dpl signal is enabled, instead of digital as it should. From what I can guess, this is the only track affected.

Why will a fix not be made prior to release? Time constraints, especially from the missus, & added to that my pc crashed and I lost the workfiles, prevent me from issuing a new set to fix. But then, this is diy- I made them for my enjoyment for hopefully for the enjoyment of others.

I still think it is a good demo. The tracks selected are from both recent and "classic (ie less than 10yrs ago)" action, animation, drama, and musical films and contain a good mix of both ambient and active surrounds, bass effects, and music.

Download or seed at your own discretion.

The finals were sent today via us mail. The testers received the final betas. the only change between their versions and the one sent today is that the speed clip is shortened.

Yes, there are (2) Disc #9. Here is a quick breakdown:

- Demo Disc #9 and Demo Disc #10 -- created by victor-eyd

- DTS Demo Disc #9 -- created "commercially" by DTS. This one is in a totally different ballpark since it is not the "home-made" type like the others. It's just coincidence that the numbers match ;)

So, the next person that creates a Demo Disc will be Disc #11

First as others have said - thanks Victor-eyed for sharing. Also, I'd love to be on the mailing list. Whoever is at the end - I think Playdo please PM me for mailing info.

I truthfully don't understand the need for mail these days, when you can download, and be watching it many days (sometimes weeks) before you receive the disk.

I'm so far not yet convinced of the upload/download process of using torrents or something similar. Time out issues, possible isp problems, and most importantly extremely long download times just make me think that snail mail still works out. Besides, you get a free set of discs that you didn't need to spend for :D

I have a question...what are the tools you are using to strip out the scenes and create the demo DVD. I'd like to try "rolling my own" just learn to the process. I have DVDShrink and Nero 6.6 available to me and have used them for other tasks, just not for pulling stuff off a DVD and creating a new one. Are they all I need?

Any advise or enlightenment appreciated! :)

I downloaded DVD Lab Pro from mediachance.com. It was a free full evaluation 30 trial period. Use you Powerdvd or pc dvd player to check your work. Otherwise, be prepared to blast through 30 blank dvds finding out what's wrong/right. Bclews was instrumental in helping me figure out how to author in a hour.

However, when you rip the disc, using in my case deshrink, and if you decide to re-author, you'll notice that the audio is now AC3 2-ch, instead of 5.1 as you've just heard on your ht. But when I simply do Full Backup of the disc (still using deschrink), the copied disc will play all tracks ( except 1st contact) in 5.1 glory.

Does anyone know why deshrink senses 2-ch? Escpecially when I choose certain tracks like EP3, where you can only have English in 5.1.

I reauthored a blank disc ripping only EP3 and a few other tracks from DVD10, which , if authored as deshrink says it will, play in 2-ch AC3. I disconnected my 3 front speakers and played as I normally do.

I also fired up my original EP3 as comparison. If AC3 2-ch is supposed to do what I think it will, the audio should be downmixed to stereo, and I should have NO discrete surround information. Also, my bass response should be significantly lessened on the blank disc and I should also hear dialogue and front effects more clearly since the receiver is now extrapolating the 2-ch audio and giving me a Dolby Prologic signal.

Results: No change from original to the blank. The Dolby Digital light still enables, I still get discrete surround and the original bass response. No downmixing or even dialogue bleed as I normally would from hearing a Dolby Prologic recording.
In short, re-authoring does not seem to affect the sound. I also tested Aviator and the results still were same.

And no, re-authoring won't remove the pauses or jumps on certain tracks, such as EP3. :confused:

I just received the demo disks 9 & 10 from Victor. I made copies using dvdshrink and the backup feature. I did not reauthor the disks so I see no problems with 5.1 sound.

I will start a Vine. The vine will include Victor's AVS demos 9 & 10. I am also including dts demos 8 & 9 that I downloaded from the torrent last month. DTS demo 9 has one track with no audio inorder to fit this on one dvd-R. It is only a documentor of guys talking about dts. These disks are not as good as Victor's but I thought it would be good to pass along.


BASIC VINE RULES: Copy the list and add your name.
PM the person above you on the list and give you address when you sign up. This might keep the vine moving.

4.) When you get the vine, give the next person a heads up that it's heading to that viner and wait for a reply to send. No point in a vine sitting in someone’s mailbox for a week if that person is out of town.

Try just making a copy with your computer of the D10 DVD to another blank DVD you know plays fine in your DVD player. The way the burn was done or the media used may not be agreeing with your DVD player.

Those labels look great tkwok. They are perfect for those of us who keep them in a small CD/DVD case and don't use a full size DVD case for each. I like to have them right there on the table for quick demo access.

Now do I put the new label over my old lame label I made myself or do I burn a new copy of each disk? :)

I pulled the clips out with DVDShrink and I have confirmed that they play DTS if I just burn them to a DVD. BUT...if I pull those same clips into Nero Vision 4, add a menu and chapters, and encode and burn, then the DD sound is there but no sound in any of the DTS clips.

What this appears to leave me with is the option to burn the clips and have DTS, but no menus or do menus and no DTS. I will certainly consider other software (cheaper the better as this is not a real serious hobby...yet), if what I need is a different authoring tool.

When you used deshrink, did you click on the box "DTS" before you did full backup or reauthor mode?

Typically, when deshrink is used, the dts box is deactivated, even though the original disc contained it. You must choose it from the menu so can enable dts playback for the copied disc. Otherwise, its regular dd or worse, no audio at all.

Yes, I check the DTS box and uncheck the DD box. Wonder if I need both?

Did you select audio 2 from the dvd player? If not, and you unchecked DD prior to burning, then you will get no audio when you play- the audio on the dvd player defaults to the 1st audio stream, in this case DD (of which you removed). Selecting the 2nd or even 3rd audio stream should enable the DTS.

You are making a Superman effort on my behalf, but I may be beyond hope... :eek:

I tried your suggestion and the player shows only one audio stream and it is thinks it is DD 5.1 . I suspect there is something in Nero Vision that is setting this during the encoding of the media files and menus.

I'd still like to know the steps you guys took to get DTS to work on your demo clips, but I also understand that it is very difficult when you can't watch everything that I'm doing. My knowledge of the technical underpinnings of DVD programming is very weak, but I'm watching and learning here on the forum.

Since I can get DD material to work wothout a hitch, I'll probably just back off the DTS push and not waste any more of your time and effort. The difference between DD and DTS to my ear is audible (I like DTS better), but the guest whom this demo is for would never know. I can continue my DTS studies as my guests enjoy my DD demo. If there are any other ideas, I'm all ears... :)

The bottom line is it's all good!

Thanks for the compliments. First, copying DTS with menus for a demo dvd is not easy- just ask kweezr. He ultimately had to ditch that concept due to sync issues. The program I (as well as bclews awesome #5) used is DVD lab Pro, which you download a full eval version for 30 days from mediachance.com

To do what we wanted was a compromise: DD with menus or DTS w/out.

Might I be able to get a copy of these discs, somehow? I just read through the whole thread, but it's not quite clear tome how you all are doing this. Does the (latest) ephords list extend beyond 6? I don't have a DVD burner to pass discs along to the next 5 people. And how do you pay someone for the discs and postage? Thanks.

The demo discs are free for starters. Some people tried a program where you'd send them your blank discs, he'd burn them for you, and you proivde return postage/envelope for the discs to come back to you. That stopped because he literally got flooded with people asking him to do so. Another way is through downloading via ftp or bit torrent. Swithey is currently allowing this service but I don't know how long it wil last. And finally, some end users are provide those who get their names on the posts for a free set.

I am willing to run a private ********** tracker for avs users for a limited time that will host D9-Demo1.iso.

Are you willing to spare 30kB/s of outgoing traffic from your network for a week?
Do you know how to configure Azureus or other bittorent utility?

Once twenty 30kB/s capable seeds are available, the tracker URL will be posted.

I am going to try to ensure that this is a high bandwidth torrent. If your bandwidth is lower than broadband, the postal mail vine is a better distribution method.

Still looking for broadband users to join a demo ********** swarm. Thanks to those who have responded so far.

Yeah, I'm surprised they haven't made it to Eastskim yet. I know they are going a long way from Florida ro Canada but I expected them to be there by now. I sent him a PM a few days ago but haven't heard back from him. Maybe if he does't respond in the next day or two I could re-copy and send the discs to the next person on the list if you all would like that.

Thanks for setting up these torrents atlr, it's a quick and easy way of getting these demos out to people. Even with 7 seeds I had the D9 demo in 8 or 9 hours. A note to users, when it is done downloading let it continue to seed! It is a great help to other AVS users. Thanks.

No harm meant, but typically it isn't considered kosher to "sell" material like this. People have put in their time so that these DVDs can be distributed freely without purchase.

Once $ are introduced, this moves from a gray area to a no-no area because then people are making profit off of copyrighted material which can get you into a lot of trouble these days.

Paying someone for postage and cost of materials is still generally ok but less in the gray area than sending via ftp or B&P.

I'm not the copyright police or anything like that but I just wanted to put this info out there. I see people occasionally asking to buy free discs so I thought they should know...

I love this idea..one problem. I cant seem to convince the wife i need a better computer..so i have no dvd-burner. I would love to get these dvd's. Hi all, i am new to the site and recently ordered my first ht system. i am sort of hoping someone would be kind enough to make copies for me as i don't have a dvd burner. I know it is asking a lot considering everyone wants them. But if there is anyway i could contribute to this undertaking, please let me know. I might be able to save enough money to get a dvd burner sometime down the road. I am located in canada, and would even be willing to send out copies for others to burn.

I do have a few suggestions for future disks. These are NOT complaints!!!!!

1. Avoid repetition from past disks. There are several clips that show up on multiple disks. I know certain scenes are great, but I can change disks if I want to see a certain scene.

2. Avoid clips with nudity or profanity (put them in a separate section or label them accordingly). Many times I show demos to families with small children present and it's tough trying to remember the content of each clip.

3. Try to find some subtle surround clips. Not everyone (especially women) wants to be blown to the back of there seat with every clip.

4. Some purely video sections (like the Seven Seasons clip at the end of Disk 5) would be nice to show off your video equipment.

I do understand that most of these disks were put together for individual use and not as part of a set, but now that we are turning them into a set let's diversify. Keep up the good work guys. This is a wonderful forum!!! :D

1. Repetition is unavoidable in some cases. Some scenes in certain movies are just so good to those creating the demos they couldn't help use them for their own tracks. And since no one knew what each other was using, by the time the distro system started, it was too late to alter the scene.

2. I dont use nudity in a clip since (a) there's usually no surround effects and (b) its a "different" kind of sound that makes everyone kinda uneasy when they watch the scene :rolleyes:.

As to a kid-friendly scenes, I tried to separate them in their own collection (ie Pixar Picks). However, the consideration of an all kid-friendly demo dvd is a possibility. There's way more than enough awesome surround sound scenes out there to make a great demo dvd. Check up on kweezr or me in the next few months and who knows...

3. Subtle surround is nice, but for my personal wants its gotta be enveloping. IMHO, being "blown out the back seat" is simply a case of "Hey, its TOO LOUD" syndrome. A good surround scene played on normal listening levels will mix both subtle and direct sound effects to its utmost.

4. A demo disc is usually more on sound rather than video. In my opinion, I believe when you rip a clip and then reauthor it on a dvd program like DVD-LAB or similar, video quality takes a hit regardless. Sound is usually not compromised unless the authoring system uses some kind of equalizaiton system. I would recommend either using a true company issued dvd that contains untouched video images for demonstration rather than one of the home brew attempts.
