Watch the Sunday ads for Fuji CD-Rs. I picked some up from BB recently when they had the 50 pack for $6.99. They were MIJ and Nero CdSpeed identified them as Taiyo Yudens. Just be sure to look for "Made in Japan" ones in the greenish gold label not the blue label ones.

I subscribe to the newspaper, so I get the Sunday issue every week. Even if I did not subscribe, I could go buy the local paper from the gas station down the street for about $2. Lots of good stuff in those Sunday papers (free comic books, comics section, news, wants ads, store circulars, etc), well worth the $2 per issue.

Anyway, I pull out the ads for Staples, Office Max, Office Depot, Circuit City, and Best Buy. Fry's Electronics has the "big ad" on Fridays, so I've already looked at it.

Anyway, I look for one of these 3 items:
SONY DVD-R or DVD+R
VERBATIM DVD-R or DVD+R
VERBATIM DVD+R DL (Double Layer)

Whoever has one on sale, with the best price, gets my business that week (assuming I need discs). If no discs I want are on sale, I go online and see sales there.

The banners at the top of sites like www.digitalFAQ.com have specials. You can also visit stores directly, see what is on sale. Between www.rima.com and www.supermediastore.com and www.meritline.com (maybe even www.shop4tech.com site), there is something on sale. Also look at www.bensbargains.net to see if uncommon stores like www.buy.com or www.newegg.com or www.amazon.com have sales.

Online, I pretty much only want TAIYO YUDEN DVD-R or DVD+R, if the media is "unbranded". Maybe PRODISC if there's a super amazing deal. If branded media are available, SONY or VERBATIM there too.

In the unlikely event nothing I want is on sale anywhere, I wait until next week. I'm never totally without media, I buy a stock for my needs plus some, when I buy.

When you shop the way I do, a thread like this one (which has gorged itself up to 26 pages), really is not necessary. Although I find the coupons very helpful, so still very valuable.

Just something to consider. The do-it-yourself method. :)

Large threads don't scare me at all, but unlike others, the great thing about this thread is that it's not necessary to go back and read all 26 pages. The discussions here are primarily about current sales or other, similar data. I mean, sure, you could go back and read, but who wants to know what was on sale 8 months ago?

Besides, not all of us buy in "WalMart-type" bulk, so I think it's absolutely necessary, particularly in regard to less common media sales. I don't recall any newspaper ever showing a DVD-RAM sale...not that I wouldn't subscribe to the paper anyway, it's worth the $1.50 just to read the news itself, ads or not. ;)

I don't buy in bulk either. Last time I shopped, I bought three 25-packs of Verbatim DVD-R for about $22 including tax. Hardly a big investment.

I've just seen a lot of problems lately in forums threads where people quote old prices, or they post about it at the last minute. I'd rather educate people on how to find deals themselves, so they can get first crack at them too.

That's all I was getting at. Like I said, the threads still have some good use.

Still, sometimes, I'm at a dried-up fishin' hole or prefer someone else to just give me the meal. ;)

Umm, the people in this thread are using the same newspaper ads you are.

It's just a good way to get a summary of the current deals, and sometimes others check them out faster than we do.

Why do the "Rich" buy poor, and the "Poor" buy rich?

No deal here but--------
I bit the bullet and am trying my luck with these $$ because I wanted Glossy.

I just ordered them form TapeandMedia.com.
Their description is:
Verbatim DVD-R 4.7GB 16X White Glossy Inkjet Printable, Hub Printable in Slim Case NEW.

The price was $16.40 plus shipping. $$$$ I know, I know!
Spending money I don't have!

By any chance you don't happen to have DVD Info or DVD Identifier on your computer so you could insert one of those Dynex DVD+R's of yours and tell us the Media ID?

If anyone out there does know the Media ID of the Dynex brand, please let us all know.

Local Office Depot B&M selling their "OD branded" DVD+R DL 25 pack (Item #721-208) for $5.01! YMMV

They are currently listed at $79.99 on their online site.

So it looks like Dynex and Office Depot brand are both Ritek with the Media ID. As long as I know that, they will be fine as Ritek has proved to be a reliable brand in the past.

Speaking of Office Depot, they have a 100-pk of Sony DVD+/-R for $24.99, and it's even listed on their web site:

5c per DVD! I haven't checked the BF websites yet, thanks for the reminder!

Maybe the "Playaz" will drop to that price as well!

Usually sales at smaller or less popular retailers are easier to find and get-in/get-out - hopefully they may have some sales there!

If you're interested I bought a 20-pk of DVD+R DL (PlayO brand), and the Media ID is: RICOHJPND00.

Which according to this website: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Rank as the #1 Media ID of the 2nd Class Media. That site rates media from 1st Class to 4th Class and per respective class whatever is higher on the list is better than what's lower. So that "RICOH" Media ID for the +R DL PlayO's, is almost considered 1st Class quality. I haven't had a problem with them yet.

However I don't know what the Media ID is for the single layered +R or -R.

I assume by the price you paid that your Playos are single layer. What is their MID?

There's also an inconsistency between digitalfaq and videohelp; digitalfaq says AML 002 and UME01 are both -R. I'm not so sure Videohelp (since they were vcdhelp) is incorrect, I've been relying on them for years and haven't caught any mistakes yet.

Yes, the Playos I bought were SL discs, and they were of the -R variety. I didn't check any discs in the pack of +R before I gave them all away. -R all read as Ricoh.

I suppose it is possible that the newer Playos could be lesser quality. The new packaging is 60 discs, rather than 50. I haven't seen them personally, just in a BF scan so far.

Hell, yeah! I'm still looking to get one more disc to compliment the single one Memorex that has worked for me so far. The Smithsonian offered me $1 million for it, but I'm certain it's worth more than that. Imagine the look on my great-grandchildren's faces when I show them a working Memorex disc! If the players are as good as the discs, I'm 100% positive that they will be able to play anything thrown at them...for at least 0.00000000000001 seconds before failure. :D

It looks like some people are being insane on ebay, as usual. I think some are ignoring the shipping cost!

If they are legit, some others are a good deal.. there's one for $200 in best buy bucks for around $100 total. (ooooh, cheap series 3 Tivo)

These were just things that came off of the expensive chicken sandwiches during McDonalds' recent Monopoly game. I guess their gimmick worked (they also did a similar one last year, but the Best Buy Bucks were on something more common like a Big Mac IIRC), since I bought the combos when I don't usually do so.. (But I knew I would be "getting back" either $1 or $5.. so it's a gamble)

Anyone see any great deals on good CDs recently? Seems like the gf has been powering through them at a high clip. Since I only use them for small amounts of data, such as owner's manuals, I don't look for them often. Thanks.

Are the brands of CDs typically congruent with DVDs in regard to quality? Or can it differ? As in, "Sony makes a great DVD, but their CDs, not so much." Or the other way around.

Office Depot (ODP) has a bundle of 75 DVD-R and 25 CD-R in a single package of the ODP brand. I think it goes on sale about once a month for $15. It comes out to 20c per DVD, with the CD-Rs thrown in for free. These DVD-Rs have been as reliable as any other brand I have used. But I don't know if that necessarily means the CD-Rs are good - I haven't used the CD-Rs yet.

If anyone cares, these on the Panasonic site are NOT the same as what I ordered.
LM-AF120U Single-sided, 120 minute (4.7GB/Non-cartridge) DVD-RAM Disc for Video Recording $0.99 ... According to the sales person I just talked to these are their slowest rams ... if you check you'll find they don't tell the speed anywhere (that I could find) while the ones I bought are 2x-3x.
-RW may be JUST LIKE RAM to some people but I can't get anything like RAM capability from -RW (EH55) -RW aren't any better than -R to me except they are rewritable. If I copy to HDD from -RW it's real time and one title. RAM on the other hand is VERY flexible, just like the HDD capabilities, playlists, single title copies, etc. and much faster. FWIW-Dept.

Yes, someone posted that earlier on after searching the web for that product code.

Yes unfortunately Panasonic only records -RW(Video), so -RAM does provide a lot more benefits on the Panasonics (I have an ES20). That's why I keep whining about Panasonic adding -RW(VR) mode to all their recorders :-) That's why the EH55 is now at #3 on my "Possible Purchase" list. Panasonic, are you listening? (as if!)

One of the other thanksgiving deals (actually Fri & Sat) is a free 50 pack of NEXXTECH DVD+/-R
$29.99 - $20 mail in rebate - $10 'instant savings' at Circuit City. (Though I see on the previously linked site that supposedly nexxtech ones are, or used to be, made by one of the 4th class makers.)

I may make a run there Fri or Sat while I also do a Best Buy run... Though I had good success with my Fry's DVD-Rs in the past, I've had 2 coasters from a new pack I opened a few weeks ago. I bought it a LONG time ago, and with the other flakiness I've had from my DVD recorder, I'm not sure it's the media's fault.. and I might even try another pack of Fry's media..

but I'll probably get at least one other brand of el cheapo media to see if it works any better for me.

Be careful about really cheap media. Some food for thought:

Taking a lunch break, here is what I found. I was suprirsed that almost all the media I was looking for was in stock. This year's strategy was to avoid the malls and the big stores with big lines. I was in and out of most stores in mere minutes, with at most 5 minutes in line.

* 60pk Playo at Staples $28 - $25 Easy Rebate = $3 + SALES-TAX. Sales tax is on the whole amount, so what you end up paying will be around $5 (depending on sales tax rate in your state)

* 50pk of Magnavox $8 at Office Max, DVD-R or DVD+R (16c per). No rebates.

* 25pk of Maxell DVD-R or DVD+R $5 after mail-in-rebate at Longs Drugs. Limit three rebates. So you end up with 75 blank Maxells for $15 (20c per after rebate)

* 50pk of HP DVD-R or DVD+R at Staples for $10 - this one was out of stock. No rebates.

* I ignored all the Memorex so I dont' know if they are in stock :-)

* Scott LCD TVs were in stock at Radio Shack. This is crazy for $600 for 32" or 37" (after rebate). But this is an unknown brand name who I have never ever heard about, and I do not know what the warrantee is.

May investigate later today:
* 75pk DVD-R or DVD+R + 25pk CD-R $8 after mail-in-rebate($12) at Office Depot
* $50 LiteOn recorder @ Office Depot
* $57 Samsung recorder @ Fry's
* $15 dvd players (after rebate) at Longs and RiteAid (Memorex).

You know how people in here heard about Best Buy having a sale on Dynex brand DVD 100-pks for $4.99 on Black Friday? Well they did have that, but here is what happened.

My Dad knew I wanted to go get some (you were allowed to get 2) and he goes to the YMCA to go swimming early. So he decided to go before he went to swim and got at Best Buy at 6:05am (they opened at 5:00am) and they were out of them already.

Now I have plenty of DVD's, I have some Taiyo Yuden left, some Ritek that work very well for me, and 300 Verbatim I will start using when my Taiyo Yuden runs out, but I just wanted to try these Dynex out and due to them being $4.99 it would have been worth it even for testing purposes, but I missed out on that deal.

I assume they were probably poor quality (or friend quality) compared to my TY's and Verbatims, so I am not all that upset.

I knew they'd likely be out by afternoon (but the ads were allegedly for Fri & Sat), but went anyway.. Best Buy & Circuit City were out of their cheap DVD-Rs (though online says that some farther away CCs do have them in stock.. not worth going).. Did get PS2 Taito Legends for $7 after using up my Best Buy Bucks that would expire on 12/2. Argh, it's $7.49 on Amazon so I guess it really wasn't as good of a deal as I thought.

No Playos for me today, as the rebate was too much to bear ($25 of the $30). I did wipe out Staples at noon on the multi-colored CD cases though. I took 10 of the 25-packs at $3 each for a total of 250 cases for $30...despite the fact that the ad said "one per customer" and the sale was only until 10 AM. (Man, do those employees love me or what? :) Amazing what a little BSing while paying for shipping will get you.)

Bonus! Also picked up the 100-pack of HP CD-R discs for $15. (No rebate required.)

Bonus #2! Also had the manager personally hand me the last I/O Internal DVD Re-Writable DL drive in the store. Great deal for $20!

Supreme Added Bonus! :D :D :D Despite the fact that it's supposed to be the basic I/O drive, inside the package was a Benq drive that also reads/writes to DVD-RAM at 5X!!! (The I/O drive won't do RAM)*

*The Benq drive was also inside many other identical packages, so this was a factory thing, not Staples.

Oooops :-)

I was tempted though by those $15AR dvd players as their boxes claim they play DVD-R and DVD-RW. The Longs offer (Avion, not Memorex) is good today as well, so I may not be able to resist the price/temptation :)

I have to confess, I have a Memorex CD-MP3 player I bought half a dozen years ago :-)

Starting Sunday 26, there are some sales, but the lowest is about 25c per blank DVD.

* 100pk Magnavox $25 at Office Max

<u>Rewriteables</u>
* 15pk Maxell $8 at Office Depot; not the lowest price, but perhaps the lowest for Maxell. You can also use the ad from the sunday paper to pricematch for an extra 10%+ discount at other retailers

Is there a significant difference between Taiyo Valueline and Taiyo Premium line DVD Blanks? Has this difference been proven by running error checks of both types of media burned from same program source and computer?

I really want to order 100-200 Taiyo's but don't want to pay the difference for premium without knowing if there is an appreciable difference in Quality/Performance. Any help is appreciated.

I have used several Valueline Taiyo Yudens in the past without any problems (they even burn at 8x in my PC instead of their labeled 4x), however due to the Premium ones having a longer lifespan (you probably won't notice a difference between something recorded on Value vs. Premium if you just made the recordings) I will certainly buy Premium line from now on.

FullOnShred...get yourself Premiums, you won't be glad today...but you will tomorrow.

I really want to order 100-200 Taiyo's but don't want to pay the difference for premium without knowing if there is an appreciable difference in Quality/Performance. Any help is appreciated. The short answer is yes, there is a difference. I have some "4X" Value line that I bought in error. They are TYG02 code which is the same code as the 8X Premium line. The value line are seconds. They do not meet the quality standards for Premium so they sell them cheaper and for a while advertised them as "4X". The TYG02 code on them identifies them to a drive as 8X media so they will burn at 8X.

I have very recently burned Value line and Premium side by side on my PC burners at both 4X and 8X and tested the burns in my Lite-On burner using Nero CD-DVD Speed. I find that the value line have a higher error rate than the Premium. I am especially troubled by the higher PIF (failures) errors of the Value line which include a nasty spike at ~1GB boundary and a high sustained block of PIF errors at the end of the disk (about the last 0.5-1 GB) which is the outer edge of the disk. I suspect it is this block of PIF errors at the edge (an indication of poor dye spread during manufacturing) which is responsible for the Value line rating of these disks. Burning the Value line at 4X or 8X didn't seem to matter with respect to the PIF error block.

In contrast, the Premium TYG02 -- burned at 8X -- had much lower error rates than the TYG02 Value line but still had more PIF errors than I liked seeing. This is especially true when comparing the TYG02 Premium to the original TYG01 (4X) Premium I started with which are the lowest error rate media I have ever encountered. When I burned the Premium TYG02 at 4X, the PIF errors were greatly reduced and the burn now looked like what I was accustomed to seeing with TYG01.

Caveat: this difference in error rate with burn speed may be equipment related on my part. My burners do not start the burn at 8X but start at 4X and ramp up in stages during the burn. When I burn at 4X the whole burn is done at constant speed from start to finish. At any rate, with my burners I tend to burn at 4X to avoid any possible speed ramp effects.

Bottom line: I would avoid the Value line and only buy the Premium line Taiyo Yudens.

Kelson, Suplex, and Roger....Thank you for your posts. : )

Kelson, have you compared the Taiyo line to the Verbatim (Taiwan) that are available at Sam's Club? These have a good reputation by word of mouth, but that isn't exactly scientific evidence. Based on your new error ratings do you still recommend the Taiyo Premium above other discs? I will likely either order a 100 stack of the Prem. TYG02's or buy another 50 spindle or 2 of the Verbatim from Sam's very soon. College basketball season is upon us so I am burning more discs right now. Thanks again to all.

I've burnt about 400 Taiwan Verbatims, with NO coasters. I don't have the facilities to check the burns. Sam's prices aren't bad, but if you watch the sales, you can get Verbatims from Office Depot, Office Max, CC, BB, or somewhere, for $.25 each, cheaper than Sam's.

And if you don't mind price-matching, you can get them for at least 10% less than the sales price. Some places price-match 10% of the other store, others give you an extra discount of the difference between their price (sometimes MSRP) minus the advertised price, which can be more than 10% savings...

I too consider Verbatim (Taiwan) among the top brands I have used, along with TDK, Maxell and Sony, with the generic Office Depots coming in next, on a Panasonic ES20; I do not know how they do in other recorders.

The Taiyo Yudens I have used are either TYG01 or TYG02 (media ID, that I think depends on the speed they can burn at, their are even TYG03's out there).

The Verbatims I have are MCC 03RG20. I have...in the past...even used ProDisc brand with the MCC media ID.

If I had to compare Premium Taiyo Yuden with Verbatim, I would go with whatever was cheapest between the two because I really feel as though you can't go wrong with either brand.

I was VERY lucky to find...at Office Depot...some clearance on 100-pks of Verbatim 16x White Top Printable for $20.00. I grabbed three of them. It was a short while ago and not anything they advertised either.

TYG02 = 8X, the mainstay of their production now; sold as Premium grade for first quality and Value-line for the seconds.
TYG03 = 16X, expensive and there has been some criticism of 16X.

For my personal use, I use the Value-line when I am backing up a movie that is less than 4GB in size ( or a large movie that I split across 2 disks where each chunk is less than 4 GB). Most of the errors I don't like occur at the outer edge of the disk, so a smaller sized backup will avoid burning that area.

If they are a lesser, no-name brand, I would use the unopened spindles from Taiwan as door stops.

To add to something Kelson said (about using Value line to backup movies that are less than 4gb) if you want to use those DVD's in your DVD Recorder and you are going to record a Movie or TV show that is 90 minutes, use the "SP" (2-Hour) setting so the last 30 minutes of the disc aren't used and use them up that way.

SMS is a decent place to get TY discs.. I use Rima.com because they do a great job of packaging and have great customer service if you should ever need it.
SMS packaging sucked but I have heard reports that they have improved in that dept. A lot of reports that they could be better in the customer service dept. too.
check the website reseller ratings..

The quality of the silver premium and white top printables should be the same.. I now only use the white top ones because they are much more sturdy, have an extra layer of protection against scratches and the silver ones (which are unbranded) are dust and fingerprint magnets. For me definitely worth the extra money..
As to that last batch of TY silver premiums being no good at all, probably just a bad batch.. As good as TY's quality control is no company is impervious to having a bad batch, I'd say that was a rarity.

Yes, those are the Printable kind (my initial reference was to the store Meritline.com, but the ones you mentioned #1760 from Rima are also printable).

Are lower burning speeds better? Well some people think that they can be. I know if you are using 16x DVD's in your computer you can...depending on the software you are using...set it so they burn at 16x, 8x, 4x, or even 1x if you so desire, but with DVD Recorders...like your Pioneer 420...you can't set it to what speed it records to so some people actually do have problems with 16x media.

I have used 16x Verbatims in my Pioneer 640 and they were ok.

Can anyone here tell me who mfgs. the Office Depot brand DVD-R's? They had a crazy deal a few weeks back....75 Office Depot DVD-Rs with 25 OD CD-Rs together on a spindle for $8 after rebates! I really wanted to jump on it but was afraid the OD DVD-Rs might be the dreaded Ritek G05's, or worse. Shed some light on this anyone??

I do not know what media code they are, but I have a very good success rate with these on Panasonic (ES20), at a similar level as TDK,Maxell,Sony. I haven't tried the CD-Rs yet...

Shed some light on this anyone??According to digitalfaq.com Office Depot media is supplied by Ritek. Based on this I bought a 25 spindle of the OD 4X DVD-RW on sale for $8/25 and so I can tell you they are indeed RitekW04. This pleases me because I bought a 25 spindle of RitekW04 (Ritek branded) over a year ago and have (re)used them for temporary DVD copies. I've been very pleased with them and have lost about 7 that I've had to trash. This wasn't because of media failure but because some experiments of mine wrote things to the disks in a way that could not be erased with the software I had in hand (specifically, making an ISO image of a DVD-RAM and then burning it onto a DVD-RW).

I can no longer find Ritek branded 4X DVD-RW, only their 6X -RW media which is considerably more expensive and useless to me since my burners are 4X max. So I was very happy to pick up another 25 spindle for so little money.

I just want to follow up on my previous post. I have now burned about 6 of these Office Depot (Ritek) 4X DVD-RW making shrunk DVD copies. They are performing just fine, like my previous spindle of 4X Ritek DVD-RW and I have had no playback issues on several players. If you are in need of some DVD-RW and they are still on sale for $8.00/25 you might want to consider picking up one of these spindles. $0.32/disk is a good deal for acceptable tier 2 -RW media.

25pk of Magnavox DVD+RW (advertised in today's Sunday paper) for $15 (60c per). at Office Max. I have never used Magnavox rewriteables. I have used a couple of 50pk DVD-R spindles of their brand and they were good enough for me. Not the lowest sales price, but it's definitely lower than regular prices.

If you are not in hurry and you want the lowest price possible, just wait for the Office Depot deal to come back again as discussed right above (32c per). I think they have it about once a month or so.

The -Rs are 16x and are probably RITEKF1. If so, I would stay away from them; better qualitity discs can be had near this price.

The +Rs are 8x. If MIT, they're most likely RITEK R03. IF MIJ, they're YUDEN T02 and I'll be all over them.

The have the same Media ID (RICOHJPND00) as the Playo and GQ, so they're probably about the same.

My thanks to NCAAHOOPS and ngohit. I went to CC and they agreed to price match the Staples Sonys which were unfortunately all MIT at my local store. CC had only 1-50 pk each of +R and - R Sonys that were MIJ (8x), but they were cool enough to combine them and price match the 100 pk. price of $24.98 from Staples. Code is Yuden T02 for the MIJ +R's. Haven't opened the -R spindle yet.

Office Depot had 1-50 pk of Sony MIJ 16x +R's that they price matched for me. They were Sony D21 code. Does anyone here have any experience with these? Am I mistaken in thinking that since they are Sony MIJ should they be pretty good?

I may check another CC fairly close by to see if they have more Sony 8x +R MIJ. I have made a decision to back up all my favorite stuff on top quality +R since those seem to be somewhat better for archiving important Titles.

The D21s a got from Staple's last Sony sale were MIT. They didn't always scan great, although max PIEs and PIFs were good; jitter was generally worse than TY. The 2 attachments were burned at 12x and 8x.

Edit: All my TY burns have had consistent scores of 97-98. I'm attaching a typical T02 scan.

pretty sure they're identical except for speed. The Taiwan ones(usually the only kind on sale,I've never seen any made in India ones) are made by either CMC Mag or Prodisc.cdfreaks say the CMC ones are slightly better, they can be identified by the top cover.CMCs have the words "open" and "lock" with serifs on the letters, and there's a rectangle above the recycling triangle. Both are made with Mitsubishi's quality dyes and stampers.

I'm sure many have noticed Verbatim's decreasing use of the Datalife(plus) brand name with its DVD±R media in the US retail market. I shot an email over to Verbatim asking about this, and here is their official response:

Verbatim is in the process of changing our retail packaging to emphasize the Verbatim brand more than sub-brands such as DataLifePlus. All our DVDR products are manufactured with Azo dye (Super Azo or Advanced Azo depending on the specific product) and there has been no change in the rigid specifications and quality control procedures applied to these products. Thank you for your support and interest in our products.

I just bought 3 printers from buy.com with (free) 7-9 business day shipping (& google checkout). Received 2 of them in 4 days (the last one was just ordered today). The second one had a slightly damaged box and the internal packing (styrofoam) was severely broken - due to UPS's "carefull" handling - the printer works fine though, we're using it right now.

The last time I ordered from them was about 3 or 4 years ago and that order was delivered OK too. I hadn't been ordering from them in the meantime, because I have to pay CA tax and they weren't the lowest net cost. I'm not sure how accurate (unbiased) ResellerRatings.com ratings are - if they get most of their inputs from complaints, then they are not that releable (not all complaints are realistic). I always check more than one ratings info source (like pricegrabber, bizrate, BBB, etc.) before I decide that the vendor is NG. Personal experience, good and bad, counts for a lot, IMHO.

NOTE: Buy.com is not at the top of my preferred vendor list, but they certainly are not at the bottom, either.

So if a cashier is confused about the price-match, just get a manager, or an experienced cashier and they will easily figure it out :-)

As far as I recall there are no -RW sales this week. The ones that typically go on sale are the Office Depot branded 25pk at Office Depot, and the Sony 25pk at various mass-market brick and mortar (staples, compusa, Circuit, etc). The sales are about once a month on average, but they are not always predictable.

DM, I am at least 50% confused by your post. From what I have read many (not all) agree that CMC Media is subpar, but I have read almost universally good things about Verbatim DVD+/-Rs, even those from Taiwan which are routinely MCC (Mitsubishi Chemical Company)codes. Have you personally had problems with MCC discs, specifically the Verbatim DVD+/-Rs? If so, and if you would be so kind, please specify brand, type and media code. Thanks.......'Shred

I have used Sony both MIT and MIJ interchangeably (on Panasonic) and I haven't seen any difference in quality. Of course I don't know if there will be a difference if/when I try to play them back in 10 years :)

If you want DVD+RW/DVD-RW, the Office Depot sale is back: 25pk of rewriteables for $8 each. The sale starts today and continues to next year (hehe), from Sunday Dec 31, 2006 thru Saturday January 6, 2007.

They also have 25pk of DVD+R DL at $30 and Imation DVD-R/+R 50pks for $10.

I also noticed 100pk HP at OfficeMax for $25...

Will update if/when I go through the rest of the paper...

The 100pk Ridata/Ritek on Amazon continues at $18, eligible for free shipping. Are these any good with Panasonics?

I think OfficeDepot has the Sony +/-R's 100 spindle at about $25 as well. I will stop by and see if I can find any MIJ there or at Staples. Wish me luck. All the Brick and Mortar stores in this area seem to be heavily trending toward MIT.

I read that most major Media Companies are shifting DVD+/-R production to Taiwan so they can focus on HD-DVD andf Blu-Ray Disc mfg. in Japan. Too bad. I won't be going that route for some years.

OfficeDepot does indeed have the Sony 100 stacks of + and -Rs for $24.99. However every single spindle at OffieDepot AND Staples was MIT. I think that is the "New Reality" for Brick and Morter Stores, at least in my area. OD also has the OfficeDepot Branded 75DVD-R + 25 CD-R deal again, this time for $15 per combo spindle.

Verbatims MIT seem to have a good rep. backed up by Quality Scans of recorded DVD media. What other MIT brands of DVD Media are of a similar quality? I am unable to do Disc Scans due to having a DVD Burner that does not support that feature.

It bums me out that I can't find the MIJ Sonys around here any more. I bought 2-50 spindles, one was 8x -R TY02 code, the other was 16x SonyD21 code. Both burn flawlessly in my Philips and should have fine archive life based on what scans I have seen.

Claude, I'm glad it worked out for you. I will confess I read on another Forum that some Sears still had some MIJ Media. Never crossed my mind before that, either. I am glad I am somewhat compulsive when I get my mind on something. ; )

I want to go back to my local Sears and see if they restocked with MIJ and get some more, but realistically I have almost 650 High Quality Discs counting my Taiyo DVD-R from Rima, the Sony DVD+R (taiyo mfg. TY02), the Sony D21 +Rs and 08D1 -Rs, and my MIT Verbatim MCC02RG20 and MCC03RG20 -Rs.

It will take me quite a while to burn thru all those discs! I record and edit certain basketball games and usually burn 3 DVD backups of each one on different media due to the amount of time and energy I have invested in editing out all the commercials and halftime. But it will still take a long time to burn 650 DVD's! : )

goots1, I'm glad it worked out for you. The MIJ Sony -R are not Taiyo Yudens, they are SonyD21 if 16x, and Sony08D1 if 8x. but from what I have read these are still good discs if MIJ. I don't hesitate to buy and use Sony -R Made In Japan.

opieandy, what the stores have in stock likely varies from locale to locale. Best bet is to check them all. Sears seems to be the last holdout in several areas, including mine. I bought the last 3 spindles of MIJ Sony I have seen from my local Circuit City Stores. That doesn't mean they might not get some more in, but I have seen ZERO MIJ since I bought those last 3 spindles about 6 weeks ago.

Be careful... All Sony DVDs say "Sony Corporation, Tokyo, Japan" on the label, but the "Made In Japan" or "Fabrique au Japon" should be on there too. Otherwise you will find "Made In Taiwan", or "Fabrique au Taiwan". Some here use the MIT Sonys as well, but I avoid them. That doesn't mean I am right, or that they are wrong. It's just my opinion/preference based on some reading on other Forums

From reading a number of DVD Forums, the only MIT DVDs that seem to have widespread approval are the Verbatim +/-Rs including the Dual Layer Discs. I buy Verbatims on sale and use them as Archive quality discs right alongside the Taiyo Yudens. Hope this helps.

The Sony DVDs at Wal-Mart were both MIT.

From what I've read here, I would imagine it's a matter of clearing out the stock in the process of changing from Japan to Taiwan. Until I read this thread, I never would have even thought to go to Sears. I would expect they move a lot less of this product than BB, CC or even WM, so it will take them a while to clear out the old product. Good for those of us who read message forums!

There are 2 levels of Taiyo, Valueline and Premium. If those are Premium then maybe it's not a bad deal. But a lot of people here order Taiyo Media online from rima.com, supermediastore.com, and meritline.com, and are pretty happy with the pricing and service of all three. There are a lot of Fake Taiyos out there so be careful. I ordered a stack of the 8x DVD-R Premium White Inkjet Printable Taiyos from rima.com and found the service to be excellent. I think my shipped cost was around $36-38 for a spindle of 100 and they were here in 3-4 days. I don't think I would deal with EBay for media when these stores have such a fine reputation and reasonable cost. YMMV. ;)

Theron, I suspect you are right that many stores are clearing out/running out of MIJ DVD Media. I read in a MFG. Publication that almost all DVD mfg. are shifting their DVD+/-R production to Taiwan so they can use Japanese Mfg. facilities to make the much more expensive Blu-Ray and HD-DVD Discs. That is why I recently bought 350 MIJ Sonys when I found them at Sears.

Wal-Marts in my area have been 100% MIT Media for several months now. And I mean ALL DVD/CD-R Media! May be different for others. Target I am not sure about. Call up, ask for electronics and have them check to see if any are MIJ...... :)

<li>25pk Sony DVD-R/DVD+R $9 (36c per) - high unless you only need 25
<li>50pk Staples slim-lime jewel-cases $10 (20c per) - not as good of a price compared to the 12-15c sales

This is the first time I see Sony DVD+R DL advertised (and at under $2). I don't use DL discs so I may have been ignoring the ads in the past....

See the discussions above on how to find MIJ Sonys...

I found the last two 50pks of 8X +R TYG02 at Sears today. Got them price matched to the BB sale price of 12.99 ea + the 10% difference for a total of $24 and change for 100.
.24 ea - not bad for TY media!

I will mention again that SamsClub carries those good Verbatim 8x DVD+/-Rs for $12.88 for spindles of 50 everyday. For those with membership, or who know members, Sams can be a good resource for quality DVD Media at very fair prices.I just bought some recently, and I can vouch for their quality. They've been great so far.

I just picked up the last 3 - 50 pack of SONY DVD+R yes they were with the white octagon foam spacer, and confirmed that they are TY's... I had a copy of the BB flyer and they price match and give me and extra 10% off.... Good deal....

I did see another 4 packs of SONY DVD -R left they also had the octagon foam spacers but I think they looked grey... The cover did say "MIJ". I like to use DVD+R so I did not buy the -R's. So go get them there, BTW the BB Sale ends 1/20/2007 "TODAY" so that might effect the PriceMatch thing if you do not get it today....

Also they had 25 pack spindles of DVD+R's but I dont think the would price match that with 1/2 the price fo the 50 pack I did not even ask. I was happy with the 150 DVD's I picked up for about 35 bucks!!!

BestBuy has Verbatim Dual Layer DVD for $30 for a 20 pack. These are highly rated discs at $1.50 each. I think this is a pretty good price.

Staples has Sony DVD+R Dual Layer for $35 for 25 pack. That's a buck-forty each. I know nothing about the Sony Dual Layer Disc reputation.

Staples also has Sony DVD+/-Rs 25 pack for $8.98. I may use this price match and clean out the last Jap Sonys from my local Sears.

Staples also has 50 pk. of Staples DVD+/-R for $12.98 and throw in a free 128mb USB Flash drive.

Cracks me up. A flash drive with enough storage for all the menus of your other flash drives. Whoo-hoo! :)

Sadly, I remember when a 128MB FD cost over $60.

The ones I saw with the 128mb flash drive are the new golden/green made-in-India that I had a horrible experience with the ES20 and had to return them ("please check disc" errors all the time). I never had a problem with the Staples brand before those. Maybe they know they are so crappy so they are giving away the 128mb FD to sweeten the deal ;-)

By the way, I think I found the reason why Playo prices have been holding steady: they have to pay for a multimedia website now, http://www.myplayo.com/ They are even hiring, I hope the salary is not paid in Playaz DVD-R spindles ;-)

If you like to use Sharpie's to write onto the DVDs or the DVD cases/labels, Staples has a free after Easy-Rebate special this week on a 12-color package of Sharpies. Advertised in their weekly print circular. Easy Rebates can be submitted online, no mail-in or cutting upc codes.

If you want more of the same for marking up DVDs or paper sleeves/cases, this week at Staples BIC has a 12-pk of permanent markers free after Easy Rebates.

Please note that there is some debate as to whether one should (or should not) write directly onto the recordable DVDs...

Help!!!

I bought these double-layer dvds and tried to make a back-up using DVD Shrink. But it did not work.

An error came up with this message "Sorry, your compilation can not be written on this type of disc."

Media requested: DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW.
Media detected in drive: DVD+R9 Double layer.

I use a two-year old Gateway laptop.

Does this mean this dvd drive can not write to double-layer disc? Or is it the software? It looks like I just wasted $30.

You might want to check and see if your DVD Drive supports Dual Layer Discs and recording. It may be as simple as needing to do a Firmware update for the DVD-RW Drive, or you may have a Burner that does not support Dual Layer burning.

That's the best price I've seen on the Verbatims. I belive the Sonys are on sale for less right now, but I don't know how reliable they are. If anyone here has tried the Sonys, or scanned their mfg codes, please clue us in!

I just bought both the Sony +DL ($35/25)at Staples and the Verbatim at BB ($30/20), and here are the results. Clearly I will only buy the Verbatim from now on.

Verbatim Mitsubishi MKM 001 (First Class)

Sony RITEK D01 001 (Third Class - layer change issues)

Best price I've EVER seen, for Verbatims $9.99 for 50! That's .20 each! This will only help a few of us, because it is from Inkstop, and they are only in 5 states, including Michigan, and Ohio. Check it out if you can. The ad says only one per customer, but in the past, they have encouraged me to buy several. I'll pick up a few tomorrow!

Circuit City has Nexxtech CDRs @ $3.99 for 50. Are these any good? Or are they at least worth that ridiulously low price of 8 cents/disc for things that you don't care that much about? :)

DVD-/+R discs were $3.99 for 25 of these same brand discs. That's 16 cents/disc. (8X speed listed)

Unfortunately, they were sold out at the store nearest me long before I called at 1:00 PM. I wonder if anywhere else has price-matching and these discs (in store and not online)?

Lastly, what's the real difference between Taiyo Yuden's Value and Premium Lines of 8X Silver Laqeur discs?

* 25pk of TDK DVD-R or DVD+R, 16x speed, no rebates, $7 at Radio Shack. Comes out to 28c per so it's not the lowest price, but if you only need 25, and have success with TDK...

* 200 office max branded jewel-cases (Buy 100 get 100 free) $30 (15c per jewelcase)

* Magnavox 50pk of DVD-R or DVD+R 16x speed, $13 (26c per blank) at Office Max

Nexxtech is Circuit City's "House Brand" I've had pretty good luck with them when copying stuff from my collection for friends.

But I guess even Circuit City din't want to put their name on them so it makes me kind of wonder how good they really are

I got a pack of NEXXTECH DVD-Rs a few weeks ago when they were on a similar low price deal. I haven't been able to use them with my XS32. Trying to transfer to the DVD gives an error dialog almost immediately. As far as I remember, there's no color change on the disc so nothing has been written as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure if this is due to my possibly-dying XS32 burner or not.. but I've been able to use other 8X DVD-Rs in the past.
