Circuit City has the TDK 25pks of +R or -R for $8. So far I have had zero problems with the + or - TDK 25packs.

There's also a 50pk of Staples branded discs at $8 (see other thread on this). So far, I have had 5 succesful burns and one that stopped at 2/3rds of the way proclaming the disc is full. The visible writeable area of the disc is not full. It won't record any more but it was finalized and can play fine on a stand-alone player.

Does anyone have any DVD-RW deals? They are not as common as +R/-R :-)

Assuming they are still made in Japan, the Staples Sony deal is an excellent one. I have burned over 100 of these discs on both Sony and Pioneer recorders and have had NO problems whatsoever.

I'll check next time I'm there. Their Sony 25pk 2x -RW are made in Taiwan.

They also had a 100pk Fuji slim-cases on sale for the same price at that time as well. I should have bought more of those as well. But it looks like there are some other good deals on +R/-R this week from Sony, Verbatim, Fuji silvers, etc. -RW and -RAM deals are harder to find it appears.

I'm just trying to keep all my recordings on the same media. I use the Fuji colors only and go: yellow for comedy/drama, blue for action/sci-fi/horror, and green for sports/documentary/etc. Same with the cases. It's really bumming me out that it's taking so long after they were coming on sale every 2-3 weeks for a while. Plus, the deal can't be beat and I've never had a coaster...ever.

I don't wear underwear, so no one can every say I get my undies in a bunch. :D

They all are listed in alphabetical order too. For series, I go by air date. I got my system way back in the day of living with roommates that borrowed CDs or movies. I could walk into the room and ask who borrowed one specific CD out of 400, or know what movie was missing out of around 700. Those days are gone, but the system stayed with me for life. It's just easier that way.

As I am browsing the Sunday paper of January 1, 2006, I found these deals:

The underlying theme this week is 50packs for $15 :-)

* 50pk Maxell +/- $15 @ Office Depot - don't know if they are MIJ
* 50pk Fuji silvers +/- @ Best Buy - don't nkow if they are MIJ
* 50pk HP +/- $15 @ Staples
* 50pk Imation +/- $14 @ Office Max
* 50pk Memorex +/- $14 @ Comp USA
* 25pk Khypermedia +/- $7 @ Office Max
* 25pk TDK +/- $8 @ Circuit City
* 100pk Nameless +/- $20 @ Comp USA - the deal is only good Sun/Mon. The DVDs too :-)

* 25pk DVD+RW Memorex $13 @ Comp USA

* 10pk Verbatim DVD+R DL $20 @ Office Max

The multi-color Fujis were nowhere to be found at my local Staples. Maybe they moved them again?

Sadly, no specials on DVD-RAM or DVD-RW :-(

Also I was a bit shocked: Comp USA has a two day special of $1000 for a 42" nameless Plasma (!) with no rebates. I don't know much about TVs, but I haven't seen a 42" plasma that low before. So I am guessing they either have a few per store or they are totally junky? :-)

If the picture quality looks good in the store, maybe this is one of those occasions that buying the item along with the store's extended warranty would be appropriate.

I bought quite a few of these 50 packs. I had previously burned about 75 of them in various recorders without any coasters.

All my burners seem to like Verbatim and all the manufacturers of my burners reccomend them.

Anybody have a good source for Verbatim DVD-R DL? They seem to be scarce and expensive. +R DL are starting to drop a little in price.

I've been getting the Verbatim DVD+R DL's at Buy.com (around $30 for a 10-pack). I've been getting the Verbatim DVD-R DL's at either Meritline.com or I think it was OnSale.com, right around $5/disc.

I followed your lead today and ordered 400 of these 4X's. I don't trust the 8X and 16X media that is prevalent today for use in my E100. At this price, how can I go wrong?

What brand are you talking about? I gave up messing around with many of the brands except Verbatim, Maxell and TDK. Too many problems and a lot of time wasted.

When I find a really good sale I stock up on those. Of course I am still trying to use up some 2x Verbatim I bought at a great price. It is a little painful.

For those who like the Office Max house brand, some stores have an in-store sale of $13 per 50pk. If you use the 15% Office Max paper bag (!) included in the Sunday paper, you get them for around $11. I don't have any experience with the Office Max branded DVDs, so I am not brave enough to try them, at 22c per :)

They're Fry's house brand, just simply called "Great Quality".

I have had *0* coasters so far for DVD-Rs, and I think I've had *one* DVD-RW bad, which I think but am not positive was one of the Fry's brand. Others have said in other threads they've had problems, but not me.. (gee, one of the few problems I *haven't* had with my XS32).

New deals, starting Sunday January 15:

* 50pk Sony 8x +R, -R, some of them Made in Japan, some Taiwan, at Staples, $15 per 50pk. They have them both at the DVD section and at a special sale section. I am guessing configurations vary by store. If you recycle a used ink/cartridge, they give you $3 off your purchase, knocking it down to $12 (24c per DVD)

* 50pk TDK +R, -R $18 at Walgreens

* Usual Memorex sales at Office Max

Unfortunately no deals on DVD-RW and DVD-RAM *cry*

If you get a chance could you do a DVDInfo or other method to get the media code? I have found this very helpful in determining who is really making the discs and then make sure I purchase just the ones that work well in all the burners and players.

Office Depot has 30 packs of Verbatim DVD+RW and DVD-RW for $12.99 in store only.

The DVD+RW is clearly 1-4x, but it *looks* (I make no guarantees) that the DVD-RWs are 1-2x (based upon the much smaller DVD-RW picture in the ad and the picture on the web, though of course this deal is in store only). So if that's right, these DVD-RWs should work in Toshibas..

Yeah, I already have way more rewritable DVDs of _ANY_ kind than I thought I'd have.. and I'm out to get another external IDE<>USB cable or case to finally back up my XS32 drive so I can reformat it.. But I'm intending on now offloading most recordings to DVD-RW if I'm trying to save up a bunch before I burn to DVD-R. (I know I can burn multi-session, but I sometimes want to save up multiple musical performances and make them one title on the resulting disc).

$12.99/30 is probably tempting enough for me to get one in person if they really are 2x.

Thanks!!! This sounds like a great deal! 40c per -RW is very nice! I have had no problems so far with Verbatim -R on the Panasonic ES20. I'll run to my nearest ODP!!! Speed is not an issue for me since I record in real-time and I dont use a PC for DVD editing. I wonder if they have an ink/cartridge recycle discount like Staples. That would knock the price even lower and make me buy more more more
more more more.

Circuit City's Nexttech NO Problems on Panasonic E55 or Samsung R4000 (A Panny E50 Clone).

But I would not record & store anything on them that can't be replaced like camcorder recordings & Etc, for that I would stick with TY's at XP or SP Recording Time.

"These are CMC MAG. AE1 Media Code blank DVDs...The same media code that are found on much more expensive brand such as HP, Imation, Iomega , Philips, Ricoh, KHypermedia and Memorex ....Great Value for most users and can be expected to work very well on most DVD Burners and DVD Players...Quality is better than average...However, NOT "A" grade media....There is only one I consider truly "A" grade and that is TAIYO YUDEN (Made in Japan) dvd media"

I got 3 of those last week using the $3 off discount for recycling old ink cartridges. They have been solid so far (the first one I used refuses to finalize, but the other 30 or so I used have been perfect). I have noticed that my recorder's (Panasonic Es20) response time in media operations is slightly slower than other brands. Maybe it's detecting a Sony and slowing it down on purpose - the old Sony/Panasonic rivalry ;-)

Staples has 25pks of their own brand (silver discs) for $8. With the $3 off discount, it comes out to about 20c per disc.

DVDs are heavy and blank ones don't qualify for media mail so S&H is not cheap unless they have promos.

www.supermediastore.com is selling Taiyo Yuden 4X DVD-R 200/$56 (free shipping).

That's $0.28 per disk for the best MIJ media on the market. Why would anyone even bother with store house brands or Costco overstock or any of the tons of chinese crap media masquerading as name brands. It is beyond me -- read my motto.

Media deals this week, starting Sunday 1/29, as seen in the Sunday paper:

* Sony 25pk DVD-RW, $13 @ CompUSA

* Verbatim 50pk 16x +/- $15 @ OfficeMax

It seems Supermediastore won't give you the shipping charges on the 100 pack of ty 4x unless you enter all your data first. Are the ground shipping charges so much that the 200 pack with free shipping is a better deal ?

Are the ground shipping charges so much that the 200 pack with free shipping is a better deal ?Yes, their shipping costs have always been pretty stiff, but it's the price you pay these days to buy T-Y from a reputable dealer who doesn't sell fakes. A single 100 pack will cost you ~$9 in shipping and 2 will cost you ~$11.

The 200 pack with "free" shipping saves you $1 over buying 2X100 packs. Still, this is a very cheap price for T-Y. I'm used to paying $0.32-.33/disk. And even that price is still cheaper than most of the advertised store specials in the Sunday paper.

Oh that's right! That one is cool for those who like the design of those discs. I should give them a try as well. They are my second favorite to the fake-vinyl CD-Rs. I wish they made fake-vinyl CD-RWs :)

Also from what I remember there's an HP 50pk for $15 at one of the office superstores (forgot which one), and 25pk silver Fujis for $10 @ Longs.

There's also a 10pk of Verbatim +R DL for $20 somewhere (I forgot where).

Thanks...you are correct. I found them at BB on-line web site. It doesn't say they are 4X but the picture looks like the old 4x package. As far as I know there were only the 4x disc's in the format of a movie reel image.

Looks like I am headed for BB in the morning but they will either be all gone or they will only have one package of the -R disc's but 100's of +R disc's. I cleaned out 2 stores last year. Hopefully they restocked in the mean time. My recorders are 4x recorders and 4x disc's are getting hard to find. If they were 8x or 16x, I wouldn't bother but for 4x disc's I will clean them out if they have any.

A few weeks ago (on Amazon) the media I was looking at did not qualify for free shipping, but now it looks like some of them qualify. They also had some silly $10 handling/delivery/installation fee on DVD players (and other electronics) which they also removed. Who would want some bozos to come in and install a dvd player for you? Come on! (Apparently they were doing this in order to prevent returns). With Prime (and free trial) 2-day shipping is always free, but I don't think Amazon has any media bargains anymore.

DaveC E100

It was as I suspected. My closest BB had only (4) of the Verbatum DVD-R 25-packs which I grabbed. They had a ton of the DVD+R's though. I drove down to the next closest BB and they had about 25 of the DVD-R's which I grabbed 10 of them. That should do me for a long time.

I also found (2) of the Panasonic DVD-RAM 5-packs at the first store and didn't find any at the 2nd store. They were $9.99 so I took both of them. BB is completely sold out of these Panasonic DVD-RAMs at their on-line store and I don't think they will be stocking them in the future. It looks like they are switching over to Fuji DVD-RAM now. My local Super Walmart doesn't seem to stock any DVD-RAM now. The B&M's might be phasing out DVD-RAM soon. They must not sell many at their regular prices?

Weird. I got my last packs of Panny RAMs for 5/$4.99 at Best Buy. At a buck each, that's quite good. I cleaned them out, but there were more later. Then, I cleaned out 4 Walmarts once too, when the 3 packs were $4.97 in the DVD cases, though the clerks all marked them down to $2.97 for me. They got more later on as well. I haven't checked in the past month or so though.

The ones I got were in the blue package. I think you must have hit all the close-out sales. You certainly got some great prices but I doubt you can find them now. I think it won't be too long before DVD-RAM will be an internet-only item. I hope I am wrong but I have enough now (probably about 200) to last me for a couple of more years.

I purchased from SuperMediaStore a couple of years ago when Ritek was still good and also had a good experience. However, there is some basic gratification to walk out of a store with product in hand. I cannot really explain it better than that.

I had pretty much sold myself on Vertbatim 8x (MCC) but saw the TDK which all my burners reccomend on the top tier. After checking the media code (TTH02) and researching it and some limited emprical testing I thought it was a good bargin.

I use the Verbatim for my video archiving projects and the TDKs for mainly burning in the Pio 633h.

I almost bought the T-Y 4x from SuperMediaStore but did not want to add another variable at the moment.

I took advantage of Costco's coupon 2x 100 TDK-Rs (16x) for $43. Then I was startled to read here that some burners might choke on hi-speed disks! But, I've used a half-dozen in my 633h without any problems, and I can't detect any burn-speed difference between these and the TDK 8x used previously.

Sorry to be dense, but is there any known constraint on what media the Pioneer can swallow? .... and what "scans" are you performing to evaluate the disks? Strictly from curiosity, why burn at only 4x on the PC drive?

I just got the Staples 50pk silver -R. The box says 8x, but I dont know what the actual speed or media ID is. So far so good. I have one that refuses to finalize but plays fine on the recorder. The rest have been good so far. They are not A-list DVDs, but they are good enough - for me - for "not precious" recordings. I also got a 25pk of their +R before. Not A-list, but good enough for me. Well I'll be heading off to check out the Staples own brand for unimportant recordings (For the good stuff I use TY's) but I wish Circuit City was closer to me because I would grab 100 of those Nexttech's for only $20.00

On Black Friday I got a bunch of Nexttech DVD-Rs for my daughter for $6.99 for 50 & she has only had one fail to finalize out of 40 so far using her Panny DMR-E55.

For her own collection she is only using TY's but when her friends want copies of "Desperate Housewives" & "The Gilmore Girls" & etc :eek: they get them on the Nexttech's. :D

The 633h reccomends TDK 16x specfically TTH02 Media Code in the manual for a 12x burn. I also cannot detect a speed difference between TDK 16x and my Verbatim 8x.

I burn on the PC at for 4x for my VHS video archiving project and DVD home movies. I have proved it a couple of times that I get a better burn with less errors (PI ~9, PIF ~2 in CDSpeed). I believe this will be important for the disc to last in the future but that is just based on reviews and research, no proof. I have also had problems playing DVDs in my old Toshiba player with some media burned at high speed but not as much now that I have standardized on Verbatim and TDK.

Also I am not in a hurry for this project. I am trying to do everything I can to give my home movies a fighting chance to survive for when my kids grow up and this is one aspect I can actually measure.

If I am burning something else that I am not as worried about I will let it rip at highest possible speed.

Wow, that's a lot of non-working DVDs! From the 50pk -R I only had one that refuses to finalize but recorded and plays properly on the recorder. The other 20 or so I have used so far have been without problems.

I haven't had a return with the ink credit, it could be interesting to see how they deal with it.

So far for next week Office Depot has 100pk for $35 for their own brand, and $22 for 25pk -RW (is that a sale even?).

Next week at Staples, the Playo brand is on sale $5 for 50pks. I never tried "Playo", but if I can get them at that price, why not? It would be even less with an ink $3 off :) I need some new coasters anyway ;-) They will have Sony CD-R/-RW on sale. 50pk slim-line jewel cases for $9. Their webpage does not show Sony DVDs - at least not in my zipcode.

Yeah, I saw the Playo ones too. $2 for 50 of them (w/dead ink)? I'll give it a shot and let you all know how it goes. If nothing else, they'll make great gifts for people I don't like and want to give headaches to.

I purchased the TDK 16x DVD-R 50-pk from CompUSA for use in my Pioneer 531H. The disks have media code TTH02 and are recommended in the Pioneer manual (pg. 100) for 16x burn. I have not made a successful copy using these in the 531H. Three times the copy failed with error message "Cannot complete copy". The error occurs near the end of the burn. Each attempt had a video length of about one hour recorded at XP quality. I have successfully burned blanks from this same 50-pk batch on my PC using a Pioneer DVR-107D at firmware 1.21 and 8x speed.

Although the 531H manual specifies TDK TTH02 for 16x and estimates a copy time of 6 minutes, when I start the copy, the 531H reports a copy time of 8 minutes which matches time required for 8x media.

My PC DVD burner can only go 8x max so I can't test these TDK at 16x speed.

DVDInfoPro identifies the TDK 16x as media code TTH02 at 16x speed, but with a Write Strategy of only 4x.

Has anyone had success using these TDK 16x DVD-R on a Pioneer 531H?

Well when I return the Staples DVD-Rs Monday I guess I might as well give the "PLAYO's" a shot for only a $1.94 for 50 with the Ink Cartridge that I already gave them.

It figures when I want to return the Staples that they would only have probably the worst brand that they carry on sale :(

But for $1.94 if they don't work I might as well just throw them out because it will cost more in gas to return them & if they work out I have until Saturday to pick up some more of them or get a Rain Check for them. :D

I only plan on using them for oddball stuff that I don't really care about & for people that are always asking me for copies of something from my collection so it's really no big deal.

I have. In fact, I was intent on simply testing this new TDK-R (16x) 100-spindle from Costco, so I burned three disks in different ways:- burn/finalize a 4+ Gig disk at high-speed, an "SP" 2-hr HDD copylist, video mode;
- burn/finalize a 4+ Gig disk at real-time, a 4+ hours HDD copylist, optimized from XP+, video mode;
- burned a 4.1 Gig disk at real-time, a 1-hour HDD copylist, optimized from XP+, VR-mode.All three disks play fine in the Pioneer, and the two finalized disks also play in my Samsung DVD player. Sorry to hear your difficulty, but I've found flawless playback from ~50 of the TDK-Rs (8x) during the past year, and no problems so far with the newer 16x. You might find it useful to check back w/ bobkart's testing thread over the coming week.

ETA: sorry, forgot to mention that those three burns of TDK 16x were on Pioneer 633, plus a couple dozen burns of TDK 8x. Earlier burns of TDK 8x were on a Liteon 5045, but no TDK coasters thus far.

GRRR!!! :mad: I want them! The damn Staples a block from my house kept having the colored Fujis on sale (30 for $9) and now I've nearly used them all up and no more more Fujis, let alone sales on them. I don't want to have different media and I used the colors to indicate what type movie it was (blue=action/etc.). Never, ever a coaster. EVER. :D No Frys here though.

How many colors are in the 50 packs? They don't include the awful purple, do they, like the cases they sell? The 30 packs were blue/green/yellow only.

Thanks for the TDK 16x burning feedback from the Pioneer 633 guys.

I just bought some Verbatim 16x DVD-R from OfficeMax (50-pk for $15). The media code is MCC 03RG20. While trying to make a high-speed copy of an hour's worth of video on my Pioneer 531H, I get the same copy error as with the TDK 16x disks. Also, the same failure shows up with shorter duration (20 minutes at SP), and also with or without finalizing included in the copy setup.

So, perhaps I have a second batch of incompatible media? Or is it operator error? I think I know how to make a copy since the same procedure works fine with TDK 4x DVD-RW disks.

If neither of the above, maybe my 531H is faulty? It appears to work fine in all other respects. Some posts above show success on a 633 model; shouldn't one expect the 531 to behave similarly? Anybody make a successful high-speed copy using 16x DVD-R on a 531H?

Got the Playos today. 250 discs for $10.35, including tax. (I had 5 of the $3 ink coupons)

Did a quick recording to DVD-R off the TV and one off DVD, finalized them and threw them in everything I had. They played fine and the recordings were good. I'll do some more advanced recordings later on, but thought I should post a quick response before they all get sold out for those that are interested in 4-cent discs.

There's every reason to believe that your 531H is identical to the 633H except for the DV-input on front panel. Pioneer only publishes one Owner Guide for the 2005 HDD-burner series (633/533/531). And I don't see how one could err in making a high-speed copyllist & burn ??? ... it's pretty cut-n-dried.

I'd begin to suspect a problem with that particular unit. But I would NOT be worried to replace it with the identical model. Walmart should be a good resource if you've not had it too long.

I got two 50pks as well. I was gonna get only one but there were dozens of people loading up their shopping carts with them, so peer pressure got to me and got two instead. If they prove total crap, I will return the unopened spindle. So far, they are 1 out of 1 for recording (filled up, finalized and plays back okay). The 1st one in the spindle had some white stuff on it so I am not going to use it. First coaster already :)

Some other deals this week, in order of preference:
* All are DVD+/DVD-R unless otherwise specified
* Sony DVD-RW 25pk @ CompUSA $13
* Verbatim 16x 50pk @ Office Max $15
* TDK 25pk @ Circuit $7
* Office Max house brand 50pk @ $11.50
* Sony 100pk @ CompUSA $30
* Sony 50pk @ BestBuy $15
* Memorex 25pk DVD+R DL @ BestBuy $50
* nameless unknown speed 100pk @ Compusa $20 (Sunday/Monday only)
* Memorex 16x 25pk @ Radio ShaQ $8

* TDK DVD+RW 3pk for $3 @ Walgreens (the ad did not mention DVD-RW)
* TDK +/-R 5pk for $3 @ Walgreens

If anyone knows of any DVD-RAM sales, please let me know :)

Well, I finished up 3 more of the Playo discs with various crap from various sources just to see what would happen. The recordings were good. I only recorded in highest setting because I was only recording about 20 minutes of material from DVDs, TV, and HD. I'm not sure I would trust my most prized stuff with these discs, but they seem great for basic recordings. For $0.04, how can you go wrong? Now maybe I won't be so pissed when countless people keep asking me for copies. Nah, they'll still piss me off, one way or another. ;)

Well I returned my Staples DVD-Rs & they did match Best Buy's price on the Sony's
plus they gave me the 110% difference in the price so I got the Sony's plus $2.00 & some change back too.

While I was there I got 4 of the 50 pack Playo's & I brought 4 ink cartridges with me & the cashier took all of them but he rang up each pack of Playo's seperate sale.

So the good part is they only cost me $1.94 for 50 but the bad part is they may all be going back because the one I tried recorded fine but when I pressed stop it would not read the disc & the recorder locked up & I never got to try & "Finalize" it to see how that would go.

I'll try another one & I really hope I can get them working & I'll report back later on how I made out with the Playos.

I'm using them in a "Refurbished" Samsung DVDR4000 that I just got so I have no idea how up to date the firmware is. The R4000 is clone of the older Pannny DMR-E50 & it has been working great so far.

Well I bought even more media today. I just could not help myself when I saw the Verbatim 16x at OfficeMax for $15 since I had not used them before. I bought only one 50 pack. First one burned fine in my Pio 633h but the subsequent scan on PC shows some problems (high PIFs near the end of a full disc) but it seems to play OK. Not too impressed so far so will try some in my Plextor.

I burned a few more of the TDK 16x and scanned them again. They appear to be fantastic in my 633h.

So I will keep using the TDK 16x for the 633h and keep using the Verbatim 8x (maybe 16x after test) in my Plextor PC drive. Each drive seems to be "tuned" to those specfic brands and Media codes.

Also noticed today that the local Sam's had Verbatim 8x on sale again for $30 per 100pk if you have a membership.

Update that firmware and you should be fine.

Upon further review of the Samsung, it appears to be more of a DMR-E30 clone than the E50, so now I'm not so sure. Still, it's worth a shot at the upgrade anyway.

Bill1313
02-20-06, 09:48 PM
It's really hard to tell on the Samsung because they did make a R4000 that was a clone of the 30 for the European Market but from what I've been told & looking at both owners manuals my R4000 appears to be a E50 clone.

I'm just & old guy who really doesn't know what he's doing with computers so I would never fool around trying to make a CD, DVD? to update it but maybe I can get someone to do it for me.

I just put in the 3rd disc to test & it did record at XP speed & it did read it so now I'm trying a recording at the FR mode that the other 2 failed in just to see what happens & then I'll try to finalize it.

Maybe the first 2 were just bad discs & what I think I'm going to do is play around with the whole 50 PK seeing it only cost me a $1.97 & then if I get a lot more coasters I'l return all of them but if I only get a few then I'll keep them.

The 1st disc was the Series Finale of "Twin Peaks" so maybe the recorder just got scared :eek: & refused to read it :D

That's a great idea to price-match Best Buy for the Sonys! I'll try it later this week! I guess they would price-match the Sony -RW from CompUSA as well! If that works, then it would be a nice price! Thanks Bill1313 for this idea!

I never even knew Staples "Price Matched" until I happened to check my receipt & right on it at the top was the 110% Price Match.

Playo DVD-R: GOOD = 5 BAD = 5 so even if half work I can't complain for what I paid for them.

I'm sure you won't have any problem with the Price Match because I even said to them you don't have to beat their price I just wanted to show it to you so I could swap the Staples for the Sony's but they insisted that they were going to beat Best Buy's price along with the swap :D

I don't think Wal-Mart should have to price match for any other reason than if they want to. Just because they can buy in bulk doesn't mean a thing, and they don't have to beat anyone's price, though 90% of the time they do anyway.

Bill1313
02-24-06, 12:32 PM
Of course they don't have to Price Match "Because Greed Is Good" :D

Playo DVD-R Update: So far the next 12 have all recorded with no problems :D &
I just thought I would add that the Staples I went to had Playo DVD-R & DVD+Rs all over the place & no shortage of any kind.

So maybe I'll go back Saturday & grab some more at $1.94 for 50 :D (With $3.00 off for the ink cartridges).

I have be purchasing Verbatim 8x DVD-Rs from Sam's for either $15 per 50pk or $29 per 100pk and they have been the best disc's I have ever burned. Great error rate scans and will play in anything. Sadly it looks like they have finally sold out and are moving to 16x.

Yesterday I opened a new 50pk and the quality went way down. Still well within spec but not what I am used to. Tried discs from all through the stack but not up to my standards for my archive project.

I just opend a 2nd 50pk and they burned and scanned near perfect. Better than the first 150 I used.

Lesson learned, always verify some of any new pack of discs and do not burn blindly. Every disc maker loses the recipe once in a while. I am sure the suspect 50pk will work fine but just not for this particular project.

Thanks. Despite the one guy's bad experience with the TDK003, I may give them a spin, if I get to Costco before the sale is off. He's also had bad burns with TTH02, although I've had decent scans with them (BenQ 1655 BCDB, burned at 12x).
My PC burners are OK with the TTH02 but the Pio 633 has been better. One really strange behavior of the TTH02 in my Plextor drive is extremely slow verification (2x :eek: ) but burn seems to burn at rated speed. I am about half through my first 50 pk.

You might want to check Videohelp.com for other experiences with the TDK003. They have a pretty good database and user reviews.

My XS34 is arriving today and I'll see how well it burns. At this point I need to start looking for some decent 8x -Rs, since I read that people haven't had good results with 16x media.

Yesterday I opened a new 50pk and the quality went way down. Still well within spec but not what I am used to. Tried discs from all through the stack but not up to my standards for my archive project.

I just opend a 2nd 50pk and they burned and scanned near perfect. Better than the first 150 I used.

Were those two 50pks bought from the same store/same day? So we not only have disc-by-disc variability (is that a word?), but also spindle-by-spindle?

Unfortunately I am not complete sure since I am not running a good FIFO system ;) I bought 2 different batches of 3 - 50pks and they have been mixed up. Based on this experience though I will maybe mark the date purchased etc. next time. So for now I need to open all packs and burn a sample.

I did look for lot numbers, etc. last night but could not find anything obvious other than all (good and not as good) have 2004 printed on the label.

If anyone knows how to identify lot number or manufactuer date I will check.

You may want to keep track of the sets of numbers on the inner ring. This is also a way to tell fake MIDs, although I don't recall exactly how -- take a look at the dcfreaks forums.

Wow great price. Unfortunately I over bought on the -R TDKs from CompUSA. My Pio 633 seems to really like these.

How do you find out about the current deals at Costco? The website is useless so unless I head down there I never find out. Of course the the media deals scouts here are on top of it and I do appreciate at that :cool:

Basically, for things like media, seems about the only way you find out is going in. You're right, the site is usually useless in that regard.

And to the other question, I didn't check the MID, but they are the white printable ones if that answers the question.

I stopped by SAM's at Noon and returned my suspect 50pk they happen to find a few more 100pks in the back room or something so I up one.

If you know how to post images here I would be happy to show the difference between the scans this evening. I admitt I may be slightly retentive in this particular case but this is my "special" project.

I have seen those numbers but never did anything with them except once when Sony had a +RW recall. I will research some tonight. I will see if there is a pattern since I keep my burned discs from the suspect batch.

It would be good to figure out a way to track this with any media.

I just got my DVD recorder at Christmas, and have burned about 250. Here's my experience so far.

The first 100 were Maxell 4x -R (MIJ), and I had zero failures.

The next 150 have been TY 4x -R from supermediastore. Had 1 failure from the first package of 100. Three more to date (two yesterday) from the next pack, of which I've used about 50.

Wow. that's quite a few in such a short period of time.
Did you get a standalone DVD recorder ( if so what make and model) or a dvd burner? If you got a burner can you tell me what the media codes are for the MX and TY? Did you scan them for errors, if so how did they check out?

>The first 100 were Maxell 4x -R (MIJ), and I had zero failures.

Where did you get these? And did they say MIJ on the package? The only ones I have seen around town say made in Taiwan on the package? Including the spindle of 50 at Staples for $15... Tomorrow is the last day of their sale. Has anyone bought any, if so what is the media code and how do they check out?

When you said failure can you describe how they failed? Skipped, froze, wouldn't finalize? And on the inner hub of the discs is there a GG or GD imprinted on them?

thanks

I meant to add that I had a Panasonic DMR-EH50. Don't have a PC burner (yet), so can't scan for errors.

I found the MIJ Maxells at Sears. Someone here had posted that as a good source to still find them, since their turnover of stock is not as high as more popular stores.

The failures occurred during dubbing, when the disk would freeze. I had to hold down the power button to shut the machine off and reset. I visually inspected the bad disks, but couldn't see any obvious flaws.

We do not have a Staples around but when Office Depot did this same deal the media code was MXL RG03 for the ones I picked up.

I have heard that some DVD-ROMs can read the media code with some of the freebie tools out there but have not tried it. I would not trust a DVD-ROM for any scanning but might work for some ID work.

I am still 100% on the Playaz DVDs. I am about halfway through the 1st 50pk. I wonder how many of these will play properly 12 months from now :-)

I also noticed that they are back at Staples, but at the list price of $25 or $30. Which means another sale might be coming, perhaps at another holiday weekend?

55c per is not a bad price for Maxell DVD-RW sold in 15-pks. You can knock the price down a bit more if you ask for a price match at other stores - if they carry them. And perhaps combine it with an ink discount.

If you know where to get them for 30c or less, please let me know !!! :-)

The lowest price I ever paid for DVD-RW in a 25pk spindle was 31c per and for that I used a $3 ink discount, and a 110% price match on MSRP! (Thanks to Bill1313). The rest of them were between 40c - 52c per (without ink discount or price match). Since -RW sales are not common, and store selection may vary (making it harder to price match), anything around 50c is good enough for me - until I built up an inventory of reserves :-)

I wish I could get DVD-RAM at 50c. Speakign of which I thought of using the 50% ODP coupon on the ODP-branded double-sided DVD-RAMs but they are discountinued in the stores in my area according to their website. If they are available in other areas (by zipcode), you can get a reasonably good deal on them. (ODP = Office DepoT)

Office Depot's ad-flyer shows a $5 rebate for an ink or toner cartridge turned in, 1 per customer per day. I didn't know about it when I went in for the DVD-RW special, or it would have been $20 for my 45 disks.

If you get a chance could you do a DVDInfo or other method to get the media code? I have found this very helpful in determining who is really making the discs and then make sure I purchase just the ones that work well in all the burners and players.

(This was in response to my post about the very very inexpensive Fry's specials for discs once in a while. In the past few weeks, there have been some other deals that have been about as good as the Fry's ones, but the Fry's ones still seem more frequent.)

I finally remembered to bring one into work.

Also, no need for a separate app, playing around one other time I realized that the drutil command line utility will give this info.

Even though I realize you only want the media ID, here's all of the info:
Type: DVD-R Name: /dev/disk1
Write Speeds: 1x, 2x, 4x
Overwritable: 510:38:38 blocks: 2297888 / 4.71GB / 4.38GiB
Space Free: 510:38:38 blocks: 2297888 / 4.71GB / 4.38GiB
Space Used: 00:00:00 blocks: 0 / 0.00MB / 0.00MiB
Writability: appendable, blank, overwritable
Book Type: DVD-R (v5)
Media ID: OPTODISCR008

I seem to remember other people have thought Optodisc was bad?? I've had one DVD-R go bad subsequently, but not had coasters upon initial recording, even with my seemingly flaky XS32 drive in other ways (on rewritables, even DVD-RAMs, though some of this very well may be software deficiencies and not hardware problems)

The Playos have kicked ass for me. Glad I bought 250 of 'em. Now I don't mind recording Corwin's Quest daily on Discovery HD and only putting one hour on discs that I give to my gf's family so much. I do look at the quality score but do not base my personal criteria for good or bad. I also look at error rates, jitter, etc. Initial scans are not a measure of long term quality but I believe it is an indicator of how retrieveable the data will be if (when) media does degrade.

The TDK scan is good and probably need to test a few more.

The only write once Sony's I have used were the 8x DVD-R but they were not the printable top. I bought these for my Sony drive (liteon based) to use at the time and they failed right out of the box. I acutally opened a case with Sony at the time an the tech I worked with recommended that I use Verbatim instead :eek:

I have heard others have had good luck with Sony's but that soured me personally to the point it will be a long time before I ever try them again.

BTW CC was also selling 50pk TDK for $15 but they were not advertising it. I would recommend staying away from the +R since they seem to be CMC made and I have have problems in all my drives but the -R (4x, 16x and now 8x) have been good for me.

I mostly stick with Verbatim and TDK if I can get them on sale. That is just me.

Verbatim 8x @ $16 per 100 (http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-branded-8x-dvd-r-media-94985-rebate-100.html)

Almost half the price I paid for mine :( but probably not free shipping.

I am guessing that they may be getting out of the 8x business and focusing on 16x.

*EDIT* - Forgot to mention this is for 100pk. Fixed above.

Looks good that they seem to be the same as the one's you got that were of such high quality.. And yes rebates are a drag, especially when there are 2 for the same item and each one requires you send them the ORIGINAL receipt and or UPS code of the product.
That might be the case here, I don't know because I was only able to view and printout the $25. coupon I am afraid with my old computer I am not able to access the $9.00 coupon.. VideoRoy. can you post it here? Or cut and paste it and send it to me in a PM?

thanks

Here is a link to where they are: Rebates (http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-branded-8x-dvd-r-media-94985-rebate-100.html#rebateinfo)

And here are the direct links:

Here is the $25 (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/supermediastore/D1223Feb2006.pdf)

Here is the $9 (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/supermediastore/D1223Mar2.pdf)

I hope there are of the same quality as what I received.

Thanks for the links but my acrobat reader is outdated and I am not able to update it. Can you access it and copy and paste it and post it or send it to me in a PM?

Tho probably the safest thing to do is to wait till they are on sale at Best Buy when in a spindle of 25, check them out and then buy more if they test out at 97-99%...
There seems to be almost no risk in buying TY 8x at supermediastore.

thanks

Crutchfiled has 10 for $19 but their S&H is high unless you are buying these along with other items.

can anyonefind a better deal on DVD-RAM than the 5 for 10 bucks at BB?For a long long time, Panasonic RAMs were going for $20/5 disks. When the US plant went into full production they went down to the current common price of $10/5. This is a pretty good deal for dependable RW media and comparable to good VHS tape.

The best deal ever was the one-time $5/5 for Panasonic RAMs that Best-Buy had last summer. I came away with 6 packs (the new scratch resistant ones) that time which set me up good and almost cleaned them out. I think BB learned their lesson from that one and we'll never see a sale like that again.

We bought one of these last time they were advertised, then went to Sams Club and found their regular price was ~$12.68/100. They were also the multi-colored, where the OM's were all clear/black.

That's nice for color-coding based on content and you only have to get 100 at a time!

They must be popular there as well. I have been buying them at that price at Sam's for 2 years now.

Your mileage may vary, but the Sony 50pk -R's in my local Staples are Made In Japan... :)

Edit: The 100pk in the local CompUSA are MITaiwan

I saw some tests on cdfreaks about the MIJ Sony -Rs,they're rebranded TYs that don't perform quite as well as TY's own stuff(slightly more PIF errors,etc)but are still very good discs.

My local Staples had a few packages of x8 from Taiwan but all the rest were x16 from Japan.

I'm guessing that the x8 are discontinued & were just left over in my local store.

Needless to say I bought the x16's from Japan. :D

Don't know how they will hold up? but the best deal I got so far were the Playos x8 with ink cartridge returns for less than $2.00 for a 50PK & the first pack had 16 that were NG, the 2nd pack ALL were Good & so far I'm about 3/4 of the way through the 3 PK without any problems.

The Playos are great DVDs for making copies for the car or portable dvd or for friends & etc & lets hope Staples puts them on sale again because this time I'll buy 8 PKs (400 Discs) :D

I am purely guessing/speculating/hoping that they may be having a Playaz sale again during the next big holiday (4th of July?). I only had 1 trouble out of 60+ Playaz DVDs. They have exceeded my expectations by a lot!

Thanks!!! I missed that one! It was on the front page under the +/- picture.

If I had empty inks I would be able to get this for $8 with price-match. But even without empty inks, it will be around $10.80 with price-match, around 43c per -RW!

Hey Video Roy, I just picked up a spindle of 100 Verbatim DVD-R's at my local (yeah 35miles away) Sam's club for $29.88, and 100 CD/DVD boxes for $12.37, when I got home, I noticed they were made in Taiwan :( ( and knowing you favor these somewhat, do you think this is decent media, at a decent price?

Sam's is where I have purchased all of mine. At that price I assume you got the 8x (MCC02RG20). They are all MIT which is where Verbatim (Mitsubishi Chemical) seems to be doing most of it's manufacturing for these discs. They supply the QC and dyes to any subcons they work with from my understanding. Unfortunately the Sam's by me is completely out of the 8x and only has the 16x printable and plain top.

I only had one "bad" experience with the 8x that came in 50pk spindles. They were not up to my archival standards but still were OK. I returned the 50pks and got 100's for the same price any way.
