Has anyone had any issues with their QIP6416-2 and the hdmi port dropping out sync with their TV's after a recent remote firmware upgrade? First Verzion said my HDMI cable was bad and that it was a known issue with their cables?? Fortunately I had additional HDMI cables to test. They offered and sent me component video cables to solve my problem, I told them the cable was good. I swapped hdmi cables and HDMI ports on my TV to no effect, my PS3 system via HDMI works fine, so I knew it was not the TV or HDMI cable.. Eventually level 2 support admitted to having fielded a new firmware update that is likely causing my issues. I talked with tech support again today and they are sending a replacment unit to see if that will fix my issue. My set is a 2009 860 Samsung Series. Anyone else with similiar issues or suggestions on how to fix my system?

thesmith,
I have noticed that on playback sometimes I get lip sync issues, and also noticed I can pause the show, wait about 20 secs and restart and they are gone.
its annoying, but I guess I live with it since I have a fix.

Hello All: I'm moving soon to a new apartment here in nyc and will go from my current Time Warner Cable (in my current apartment) to Verizon Fios TV (in my new apartment).

I asked them (in the work order) to include:

1 Home Media DVR (whole house DVR) for the living room
1 HD Receiver Box (for my bedroom)
1 SD Receiver Box (for my study's Hauppauge tv card in my desktop PC, so I can watch CNN when i'm on my PC using a small tv window on my desktop as i'm using two monitors)

I've been reading quite a bit and ascertained that the coaxial cable output from the Fios ONT box has to then have a "1 to 4 way splitter" because there are four coax needs in the abovementioned set up:

besides the 3 listed above (Home Media DVR, HD receiver, and SD receiver), the 4th output from the 4-way splitter needs to go to the Actiontec branded Verizon Wireless modem, which i was told is required to be used, because the coax input into the Actiontec modem will allow the rest of the DVR/receivers to have TV programming guide and other features like on-demand programming. I was told that if the Actiontec wireless router does NOT have the coax input (merely the RJ45 data input for internet), the entire group of DVR/receivers won't work properly.

May I ask if this is true, that the Actiontec MUST have the coax input in order for everything to work properly?

Additionally, i was thinking that i might be able to NOT have the SD receiver in my study as my living room DVR is right next to my study - maybe I can run BOTH an HDMI from my living room Home Media DVR to the living room tv, PLUS use the S-video output of the Home Media DVR to go to the S-video input of my Hauppauge TV card in my pc?

Does anyone know if the Motorola Home Media DVR will allow BOTH outputs working at the same time? (i.e. both HDMI output as well as the standard definition S-video output?) I see that there is an S-video output as well as composite output, but the Hauppauge tv card's composite image is awful, so i have to use S-video.

Thanks in advance. Hope someone knows!

eieio,

I just had FIOS re-installed ( had been with cablevision the last couple of years), It is not just a modem, it's a router as well and necessary to connect the coax to it so all of your boxes are connected to the network. Mine is labeled "Verizon" ( no reference to Actiontec at all that I could find) unlike the original Actiontec that was used when I first installed FIOS a few years ago. It is also my understanding that they don't always use cat 5 to connect the router to their internet service and just use the coax in new installations ( since mine already had the cat 5 run from the ONT, they used it).

Regarding using multiple connections from the DVR, I haven't tried component or S-Video, but coax and composite do work. I have my kitchen TV connected to the living room DVR vis coax and I can have both tvs on at the same time using hdmi and coax. I've also tried the composite connected to a Sandisk v-mate and that works as well so I don't see any reason why component S-Video won't work. This is for the basic DVR, not the home media version but I doubt there would be a difference.

Also, there is little problem with loss on the coax. Mine is actually split 5 ways with two 2-ways in the attic and one 3-way in my home office for the router, converter box and QAM DVR.

I have that, too (qip-6416 with HDMI out to a Memorex TV).
We have just gotten used to pressing "pause", then "play" to re-sync it.

It is an intermittent problem, but it would be nice for them to fix it.

I'm doing almost the same thing with my QIP-6416.
I have HDMI going out to my 42" LCD TV.
I have composite video and audio going out to a 4-port RCA composite splitter/amplifier (from Radio Shack), feeding video and audio to two other TVs, and I have component out going to my fourth TV.
All work fine, and I can watch on multiple TVs at the same time.
I have a few extra remotes (the Comcast ones are 100% compatible, and you can reprogram nearly every button on them). I have a few infrared-to-RF signal senders (three senders and one receiver), to pass the IR commands back down to the DVR downstairs. This setup has been working great for years.

I can't tell you if you'd have the same ability with the newer 7216 DVR or not.

It does, and YES your router needs to be connected to the coax 1) most likely you'll be using that for wan rather than cat5 2) that's how the set top boxes connect to the router in order to get guide, vod, and widgets.

OK, I've done a search in this thread and only came up with a few temperature related topics, none of which helped me. They were mostly to do with fan noise. If there is a fan in it, I don't here it running.

My question is I have two motorola boxes in my equipment rack (1-QIP6416-2 and 1-QIP6200-2). When they are both OFF the 6200 is slightly warm to the touch but the 6416 is smoking hot. You can hardly hold your hand to the top.
How hot should these be when in the OFF or standby state?
For them to be generating this kind of heat, they must be sucking up quite a bit of electricity.

Remembering what I read about other heat and fan noise related issues, I took the rack face trim plate off the front of the STB and lifted it up a inch above the rack shelf and shimmed with 1" inch blocks. About a hour later I went back to check it's progress and damn if it didn't drop the boxes temp dramatically. Todays project is to remove the rack shelf and cut a hole in it to line up with the fan. Then I will use some 1/2 inch thick peel-and-stick foam weather stripping to seal the STB's fan inlet to the shelf and allow it to pull cool air from under the shelf.

I've used a laptop cooler to help keep the DVR cool. Just plugged into the USB port and works great in an enclosed rack.

any word on when the next gen dvrs are due? i'm switching to fios from directv in about 3 months

i used to be on cable, and remember HATING the software interface and the recording features..directv's is so much nicer and friendlier to use, albeit slow.

i have seen some rumors that verizon is testing energy saving dvrs, and it looks like these boxes will have a software overhaul as well.

I, too, am seriously considering switching from D* in the near future. I've been endlessly annoyed with D* recently in that they will not give me any equipment upgrades at all despite being a long time customer. Plus, I get major reception issues with bad weather.

Overall, any major FIOS problems I should be aware of? Are there some people on this thread who have switched from D*? Which is better overall? Are the FIOS DVRs good? How much space do they have with recording HD programming?

The only thing I don't like is the small storage capacity. I could hold a lot more on my DTV boxes. Other than that everything is great!

I moved from D* about a year and a half ago. I was a loyal customer for over 9 years and still would be until I saw the HD picture quality from FiOS. D* HD seemed very blocky with fast moving scenes. The worst thing about FiOS is the sluggish HD DVR. The look and feel are great but it's not as snappy as it should be. Verizon needs new hardware but I wouldn't go back because you also get super fast internet.

Nothing like using 5yr old technology. I don't hold out hope for an upgrade any time soon or even then the ability to use our own drive. 320GB (new boxes) just isn't enough in this day and age.

Lots of empty promises from Verizon.

Their DVRs is the 1 reason I didn't opt for the FiOS Triple Play bundle, which was very attractive. They need to get get a DVR, that's not 5 years old, and one that is MPEG-4 capable, with the option of plugging in your own eSATA 2 TB drive for added storage. When they do this I'll gladly term my D* contract & sign-up for the triple. D* new HR24s are a lot nicer than their previous generation HR2X's though and smoking fast!

The DVR sucks, sucks, sucks. The guide screen is 4:3 and looks ridiculous on your 16:9 TV. The controls are sluggish, and good luck stopping where you actually want to stop from FF or rewind. No frame by frame. Sometimes it even crashes when I try to rewind in slow motion. The guide is wrong a lot of times, too. If you're coming from TIVO you will be sorely dissappointed.

Not according to the latest info (http://www.zatznotfunny.com/2010-08/the-q4-verizon-fios-tv-updates-esata-hd-ui/). 1.9 update should enable eSATA support for drives up to 1TB in size even on the 6416. If not I'll be first in line for a new box.

I wish 1.9 could enable eSATA on a QIP6416. But the port just doesn't exist on the QIP6416. You need the 7 series to add and additional hard drive (eSATA).

Or 1.9 allows you to gang multiple DVR's together and makes a seamless list of your recordings. Seems like a nice feature for those that want multiple DVR's. I rather get a 7 series and add eSATA to it.

DaveFi
08-21-10, 09:00 PM
My mistake. I hadn't looked at the box in so long I forgot it didn't have an eSATA port. I think the Comcast box I had before did. In any event they already rolled out the new boxes in my area so when 1.9 is available I'll exchange it for one of the new ones.

benjaminmarle
08-22-10, 07:16 AM
Damn. I guess I'll have to get an exchange unit. I had a 7 series, but was defective and they sent me a 6 series. But I'll wait until they actually release 1.9.

Scheduling my FiOS installation very soon - I'm getting an HD-DVR for the main room and an HD box for the bedroom TV. Not getting the multi-room DVR service. Should I request the 7216 series DVR and the 7100-P2 HD box, or are they only giving out the 7216 if you're subscribing to the multi-room service? The only reason I ask is because Comcast was holding back on their multi-room capable DVRs when I requested one, and told me I couldn't get one unless I got the service (which wasn't true).

You can request a 7216. I did and I got a 7216 P1.

It was showing 29% full yesterday with NO recordings. Had to reset it and that wiped out all my series recording set ups. That's the 2nd time thats happened with 2 different boxes. The CSR tried to tell me that hard drives lose storage space due to fragmentation. Nearly 30%? I think not. Yup, this DVR is a miserable boat anchor.

I'm told they're working on a replacement, but no feature or release date is available.

I ended up getting a 7216 P1. Haven't used the DVR much, but did record a 2hr HD show, and it looks like that took me to 3%. Not ideal, but it'll do. Is there a list anywhere of the features that the new guide update this fall is supposed to bring?

Edit: found it - http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/18/verizon-fios-set-top-boxes-getting-a-new-hd-guide-external-stor/

Looks like they're also adding support for external hard drives via eSATA, so that will be pretty awesome.

They have newer boxes in the channel with built in 320gb drives anyways. I think it will be some time before we see the 1.9 update- most people still haven't gotten the 1.8 update which was supposed to roll-out before the end of August. Verizon has never been known for sticking to a schedule.

I recently received a QIP6416 from Verizon as I'm switching from my tivo to their pvr. For a long time now I've been using my own router, and would like to continue to do that, so I'm trying to get their router connected behind mine, so that the coax connection is functional.

Anyways, the first time I booted up their router and pvr, it allocated 192.168.1.100 to the pvr, as per the router's dhcp settings. Internally I always use 192.168.0. so I changed the router's settings, but the pvr keeps showing the old address, I can't seem to get it to reset the network connection. Is there some method to do this?

The verizon router is still using 192.168.1.x despite what your router is set to. In fact, you want them to be different in order to avoid conflicts

Don't think so. It's too long of a story to explain completely, but through a streaming HD bandwith shortage from the Silver Spring Maryland central station to my area and 5 trips by Verizon techs in one week, the last one by the regional maintenance supervisor, I have a cell number for a 3rd level tech, that has access to the newest equipment. I didn't use it this time because they're really isn't that much difference between dvrs. That said, when the cisco comes out, I'll use this resource if I have a problem getting it.

We pay almost $400 a month to Verizon for tv, cell, land line and internet. Threatening to rip the fiber box off the side of the house so they can pick it up also works wonders if you've had a problem and who with Verizon hasn't?

Based on the information that I have, if your Central Office isn't set up for Cisco, you won't be able to get a Cisco STB. Motorola Central Offices only support Motorola, and Cisco Central Offices only support Cisco.

The Moto 7232 should be available in limited markets.

Tim McCune
10-25-10, 02:55 PM
Verizon issues specifications to all for STB manufacturers whether they be Cisco, Moto, or others. In the past, there hasn't been a significant difference regarding features or functionality, unless there's a local or state compliance issue. That said, there may be a difference in reliability based on the manufacturers quality control.

Cisco boxes run a different MOCA format so they are not compatible w/ moto boxes for mrdvr and not all Cental Offices are ready to support the format yet.

Recently, it seems my receiver (Denon AVR-3801) no longer goes into Dolby Digital with my Fios QP6416-2.

I think I have all the settings correct, and the receiver still goes into 5.1 with the other sources I have going into the receivers other digital audio inputs.

I think this has happened fairly recently, as it worked for the past few years.

Anyone else having an issue? Any thing I should try?

I have a series recording set up for The Event on Mondays. As is my custom, I tried to join the recording about 20 minutes in so I can FF commercials. No matter what I tried, each time I selected "Play", the tuner would take me to real time on the NBC channel that carries the show. I also recorded Hawaii 5 O which follows the Event on Mondays. Playback of 5 O works perfectly as has everything recorded since. I had set up the 5 O recording earlier in the evening. Same channel but different results. Why? The description for the recording shows a 1 hour block taken up by something.

I tried several other times on following days to "Play" The Event recording and I am always taken to whatever is currently showing on that channel. The one thing I haven't done is to reboot the box. I deleted the episode as I watched it on nbc.com.

Is my hard drive dying?

Hello,

I think this is a little different then what the person mentioned about but last night I recorded a program only to find out that when I attempt to play it cuts back to live TV. The file does seem to actually be on the box based on the disk space remaining after this recording, I just can't seem to play it. It seems others have experienced this as well on verizon's forum:
http://forums.verizon.com/t5/FiOS-TV-Technical-Assistance/Some-recorded-shows-won-t-play-back-on-6416/td-p/130966

Unfortunately no seems to know to retrieve these recordings so I figured I'd see if anyone here knows anything. I normally wouldn't sweat it but it's an expensive PPV.

Thanks

UPDATE: To anyone who cares, it seems my box did an update last night and all of sudden...it works!

What kind of operating system is used on the QIP6416? I have on that I plan to remove the SATA 160GB hard drive for use in a Series 2 TiVo. In case the hard drive doesn't work in the TiVo I would like to be able to restore the drive. Where would a person find an image to restore the drive? Also would a person be able to install a different software onto the hard drive to make the QIP6416 usable for anything other that Verizon Fios? Or would it require a different BIOS?

You do realize that in all probability, you are leasing the QIP6416 and don't own it, don't you? You could end up owing FIOS a boatload of money if you don't return it to them at some point. MFSlive.org is the place to find out how to create an image of a working Tivo drive. The hard drive from the QIP6416 will not work in a tivo as is. You are better off just buying a new hard drive if you want to upgrade your tivo.

The QIP6416 is mine. I bought it at a thrift store with a receipt. When I called Comcast about activating it on Comcast I was told that if I bought it at a thrift store that it had been removed from inventory and that it was only good for gutting.

I already have the instantcake disk for my TiVo.

qip series boxes by motorola work only on fios. dct series boxes by motorola for the most part are compatible between motorola based systems.

So, there's no way to convert this QIP6416 to a DTC6416? How would one reflash the motherboard BIOS? Or does it even have a BIOS? Is the operating system installed on the hard drive as in a TiVo?

number 1 , modifying a cable box is illegal. number 2, even if you converted this to a dct6416 no cable company will activate it for you. give it up!

If I set SD override to anything other than 480i, it always reverts back eventually.

I know it has something to do with having everything run via HDMI through my a/r receiver -- but the settings SHOULD stick, no matter what.

Has anyone been able to resolve this. And by the way, it doesn't matter if the setting for SD override is changed in Verizon's video menu, or if you go into the setup screen on the set top box itself.

I would like to have the setting at 480p -- which allows me to see the OSD volume settings on my a/v receiver. However, it will not stay that way.
