billodom 04-18-06, 05:59 PM Just logged on here and found out about the recent upgrade. It fixed my HDCP issue that was occurring with my JVC AV receiver / HDMI switcher. Also found the "Advance" control on my Harmony to enable the 30 second skip. I'm much more happy with this setup now.Glad to hear your HDCP issue is resolved. Would you mind providing further details about the connection you're utilizing between your 6416 and your RX-D401S? In other words, are you using a separate optical/coaxial audio cable? Or are you getting 5.1 through your HDMI cable as well? Thanks.
Jon Austin 04-18-06, 06:00 PM I was just doing my monthly check-in to see if Verizon had fixed the HDMI/DD 5.1 bug yet. I'm in the D/FW area, so hopefully my box was upgraded with the rest of the local users. I'll find out this evening!

I'm using only the HDMI cable for video and audio from the 6416 to the JVC. I am not real savvy with audio gear, but I can tell you that (for certain broadcasts) my receiver flashes "DOLBY DIGITAL" and all 5 of my speakers work. Does that qualify as 5.1? It definitely sounds better than the TV speakers I was using before!

You access it by turning off the 6416 and pressing Menu. The latest upgrade now has a section called Additional HDMI Settings. Selecting that takes you to a new menu and one of the options is Audio Output. There are three choices: Auto, L-PCM and Pass-Through. I'm wondering if these audio modes are functional when connected solely via HDMI. One way to tell they are functional would be to view a program in 5.1 audio and toggle to L-PCM mode. Your JVC should then change over from Dolby Digital to Pro Logic mode. I am also interested in what the difference is between Auto mode and Pass-Through mode. These audio modes are not functional when running a separate optical/coaxial audio cable.
If you have a chance to experiment with it, I would really appreciate it.
turbotaz 04-19-06, 09:29 PM Hello all. I had my DVR installed a week ago in the Tampa, FL area. No HDMI/Dolby with my unit and overall the DVR is a huge improvement over the Brighthouse box. For two days in a row now, the Colbert Report recordings stop about 10 minutes into the show, the screen turns black and the program appears to jump to the end. It shows that the whole 33 minutes are recorded. Has anyone else had this issue?
Is anyone else in the North Texas market having PQ problems and audio drop out? I am getting very bad periods of pixelation and audio completely going away or dropping out especially on FOX HD. I don't know if it is a DVR problem or isolated to my connection.
I HAVE TO HAVE THE 30 Sec skip. I have been really missing this since i switched over to FIOS from UltimateTV on DTV.
How do I get it? I have the original remote. I also have a MX-600 Remote Theater master if that helps? I have a friend who has comcast with the reciever that looks the same, can I use his remote to progam my learning remote?
Please help :)
Thanks,
Zeno

I was loosing all video and audio was jumping from 5.1 back to stereo Thursday morning. I just thought it was hangover from the storms the night before.
krj1053 04-21-06, 10:08 AM Yes I too have been having some pixelation and audio dropout here in Keller.
Good to hear...not that you are having issues, but that I'm not the only one. I never seem to have problems with HDNet, Discovery HD, NGHD, or any of the other non-network HD. Really bad with FOX. American Idol, Loop, and OC recorded last week were awful. Were you seeing this live? Any other networks? I hope Verizon has someone monitoring this thread and can figure out the problem. Talking to Verizon is a chore.

I will check that out when I get a chance. I did notice those options the other day and they are active for me. I am currently set to auto, and I have a feeling that no matter what I set, it will always revert back. (I have tried changing my 4:3 setting to STRETCH and it works great, but when the box sits for a day or so it reverts back to OFF, so I think there's a bug there or something. Another poster mentioned the same behavior earlier.)

YES, I thought it was my AV receiver, glad to hear its not just me. And yes FOX is the worst.
I HAVE TO HAVE THE 30 Sec skip.
Find someone with a Harmony 880 and learn the "Advance" code from them. Or be a little sneaky and buy one then use it then return it. Although I would recommend keeping it, it's the best universal I've ever used.
turbotaz 04-21-06, 08:48 PM Ok, so I guess there is no-one else having problems with Comedy Central? I figured out that the problem is consistent evey single night, limited to comedy central (for me) and about 1 of 4 times if you replay the show from beginning and fast forward, it will work just fine. So let me ask it differently - does anyone here record the daily show without issues?

Sorry, doesn't pertain to the question, but i heard the Daily Show and HAD to say something, JON STEWART is awesome!!! Did you see Ted Kennedy on last night? Man he's been getting some important guests, i mean he had Bill Clinton on the show a while back.
Sorry about the off topic post, mod delete if necessary.

Hi Bill, thanks for pointing me to this thread from the "install" thread.
At first I thought these were functional using optical, but I did some more experimenting and found you're right, doesn't seem to make a diff which option I choose. Kinda weird. But hey, I got DD now, I'm ok with them not "reverting" me. :)
Seems like V* has a different "mix" in DD than E* has, I used to have my center channel turned up quite a bit w/ E*, but I have now put it back to neutral w/ V*.
jsrule7 04-24-06, 07:22 AM Hi, new here...need some help solving a few problems.
Okay I have a QIP6416 and I'm using it with a HD 26" TV. Everything is fine with this set up. HD looks stunning! :)
Here is the problem...On the other side of the room I recently picked up a Samsung 910mp 19" Monitor/LCD TV. It has a audio/video inputs/s-video/and coax input. Now when I used a splitter and ran a singal to the coax on the 19" I only get a 10-15 channels. I don't know if that's normal but I've tried changing the options (i.e, standard and ota) OTA I get only 4-5 channels but with the standard cable I get 10-15 channels. I also tried connecting s-video from back of the cable box and I seem to get all the channels but no sound. The other problem with the s-video connection is I can't change the channels unless it's from the box which negates having a 2nd tv. So now what can I do to get the maximum amount of channels with audio on the 2nd tv with
1. Not having to buy a 2nd box
2. I can control the channels on the tv
3. Did I mention audio?
I don't see any coax output from the cable box nor do I see any audio/video outputs whcih aren't alreayd taken by my main tv.
When I had COX I had a TV downstairs that was barely used so I wanted some channels on it. The rep came and just connected a coax straight to the tv w/out a box and I got all the standard channels upto 80-90. I don't see why I can't get the same results here? Am I doing something wrong or is it just not possible to connect a 2nd tv and get the standard 70-80 channels (fox, nbc, comcast, espn discovery etc)?
What do I need to do? Any and all help is greatly appreciated!
TIA

With a straight coax and no box you only get below channel 41 here in Keller. I have a splitter on the line and have it hooked up for PIP. You are correct that cable gave more channels without a box.
Hope that helps.
jsrule7 04-24-06, 09:09 AM hey thanks for the reply! i guess that's the way fios is...most are digital channels that have to go through the box :(
twitchee3 04-24-06, 06:37 PM hey thanks for the reply! i guess that's the way fios is...most are digital channels that have to go through the box :(
I strongly suspicion that FIOS has almost all digital channels, so that means you will only be able to get the analog channels by hooking the coax straight to the box. Other than that, the box can only display one channel at a time, no matter how many A/V outputs the box has.
dmbatch 04-24-06, 08:54 PM I'm thinking of getting a second box and putting it in the same room as my first one. Is there a way to set the remotes so they don't interfere with each other? I looked all over the manual and setup and can't find anything. That was one of the nice features on the TiVo.

All Moto DCT/QIP series STB use only 1 IR Code setup for remote commands. (The Same One)

In the No VA area it's 318 to 21 the number of digital vs. analog stations.
Most cable cos will switch to this ratio and after 2009, you'll be hard pressed to find any analog channels. Granted a number of those digital channels might be in the clear.
S-video is just that - video only - you have to use the audio connection with it to get audio.

Where we are serviced by Adelphia in SoCal, we still receive ALL basic cable channels (2-78 and CSPAN (98-99)) in analog format, and then we receive only the 100 + digital basic and digital plus, as well as music, VOD, PPV, and HD channels in digital format. I do not want them to go to digital only in the near future as we have several TV's that do NOT use STB's, and we also have 3 computers with analog PCI TV tuners that necessitate the analog broadcast to function for channels 2-78 +98,99. I would rather have them simulcast analog basic (2-78) AND digital, so ALL channels are digital for rooms with an STB (for better quality and tuning) and then all basic cable channels are analog as well for TV's, TV Tuners without digital capabilities.

Crap, I never realized (nor thought of) that. I was thinking about switching to FiOS from D*, but that's a deal breaker.
jsrule7 04-25-06, 12:32 AM yeah I'm in the Mclean area as well and what biker said is exactly correct. I only had about 20 or so channels showing up when it was connected straight from coax to the tv...It's a bummer but I guess there's no point of having 2 tv's in the same room. What worked for me is I got 2 y-adapters and plugged them in the L-R-audio and the video in the video so now I get all the channels and SOUND but it's controlled by the box. So not complete freedom but I don't mind because FIOS is saving me a lot of money compared to the evil cox corp! It's mostly for PIP so it's not THAT big of an issue but I wouldn't have minded if it was the same format as cox so i could get 80-90 anagal channels.
Thanks for the input! Appreciate it...

biker19 04-28-06, 08:54 PM I posted this in the install thread also - watch for the networking feature of the DVR and other STBs to be turned on o/a May 28.
I talked to some people at a FIOS booth in Southlake, TX yesterday. I guess you can take this for what it's worth, those people in the booth aren't usually very tech savy. One woman in a green shirt, the others had on red, said that the networking feature was in testing at employee homes. She also said it was a different box than the DVR in use now. Her rollout date for the feature was a timid "before the end of the year".
Dave327 05-02-06, 05:38 PM Verizon is running a real thick cream color fiber optic cable in my apartments is this FIOS you'll are talking about???
dmbatch 05-03-06, 04:35 PM I noticed last night that the rewind after FF seems to be a little longer than when first implemented. Anyone else notice this or is it just my imagination?
djjoshuad 05-05-06, 11:53 AM I am a Verizon customer and employee in north TX. I recently got FiOS video service and am more than happy. I can tell you that the employee trial of DVR networking has not started yet. I am on the list to be part of this trial when it starts in a couple of weeks.
I'll post here once I am set up to let you guys know how it is... unless, of course, I'm prohibited by an NDA =/
kentwitt 05-10-06, 05:26 PM What I want is for them to enable the stinking SATA or FireWire ports for disk space expansion. 160g is not enough for HD recording.
In fact it would be nice if someone out there built a hardware network device that would pretend to be a SATA device but in actuality it was a NFS or Samba mount..
160g is not enough, but it's a lot more than I apparently got. As of yesterday I had FIOS installed with a Motorola box model QIP6416-2. I noticed that I could record only about 3 hrs of HD, so called the service rep. He claimed that there was only an 80g drive!!! Can anyone confirm that the newer box (I assume it is newer because of the -2 designation) has this smaller drive on it? By the way, this is service in Lynnfield, Massachusetts.

No it has 160 GB HD w/ Aprox 143 - 146 GB set aside for the DVR.
the last 2 Digits in the STB Model number tells you the size of the HDD...
QIP6416-2
QIP - Format
6416 - 6400 series STB w/ 160 GB
-2 -- Phase 2
6408 would be the 80 gig HDD version.
6412 would be the 120 GB HDD version
6432 would be the 320 GB HDD version

Thanks for the quick reply. If you are right, then I should be expecting on the order of 16 hours or so of HD record time assuming a rate of 20 Mbits per second.
145GB = 1160Gb capacity in gigabits
1160 Gb / 20 Mb = 58000 capacity in seconds
58000 / 3600 = 16.1 capacity in hours
Is this the right? Have others with this model been able to record 16 hours of HD?
Thanks again.

Recording time will vary by what the HD network's bit rate is set to. They change it for various shows and it also depends on if they have any sub channels.

OK, but if I am getting only 3 hours of record time, that is probably not attributable to a network having a bit rate of 100Mbit per second, or do you think that is possible?
Klrkrzy784 05-11-06, 07:48 PM I read in another post that this set top box could possibly have microsoft based software? If so wouldn't you think that hacking into this Box to edit things and change some things around would be relatively easy?
Has anyone attempted to do this yet?
Thank You!

On average, each hour of HD recording on my QIP consumes (according to the QIP) about 5% of the available recording space. An hour of SD consumes roughly 1%.
This would infer a recording capacity of 20 hours of HD. I don't know that I've gotten it up to the limit as yet, but I have seen this estimated number before as well.

The STB software made by Microsoft is not Windows based, and is not any more hackable than the same box with iGuide, passport, etc. software. The Motorola/Scientific Atlanta boxes ARE INCREDIBLY resistant to hacks. If you want to hack an STB, get a TiVo Series 2 or an HD TiVo, other than that, you're SOL.

The base OS is Linux. The guide and menu interface software is written by Microsoft. Yes, I agree, there would be a slim to none chance of hacking the STB. Get a Tivo or Replay TV DVR if you are looking for an easy hack/Mod.
krj1053 05-16-06, 08:00 AM Has anyone in the DFW area been having trouble with their boxes missing parts of shows when recording? Sunday night I only got the first 30 minutes of one show, and last night it missed a random 10 minutes in the middle of 24.
My neighbor across the street lost all of their recordings last week also. Their list still shows the recordings, but they won't play when you try to play them.

Were you recording 2 shows at the same time? If you changed the channel while both tuners were being used, you could have hijacked one of the tuners. This would have stopped the recording. When you went back to the 24 channel, it would start up again.
Your neighbors situation - Their box needs to be replaced. There is something screwy about it. There should be no reason that there are shows listed in the DVR Recordings section, but no shows are actually recorded. What is their "recording space" showing up as? (in the DVR recording menu in the lower left hand corner) The hard drive may be going bad too.

For some reason a call to Verizon to reset the DVR seems to fix problems like this - had them before and the reset cured the issue.

Verizon was able to fix ours this way also ... the first, second, third, fourth, etc. time it happened. Any chance this is a hardware problem?

More than likely software. I am sure they are working on it. When they send it the "reset" it basically re-downloads some of the software again. There may be some kind of corruption occuring and the reset reloads the software curing the problem until the corruption happens again.

dmbatch 05-20-06, 08:23 AM I just noticed a great feature this box has that my HD TiVo did not. On Thursday when ER starts 1 minute early it give me a conflict because I'm recording CSI and OC at 9. It gives 2 options when it sees the conflict, record the new show or record the old show. The TiVo did the same thing but if you selected record the old show it completely cancelled the new one. This DVR keeps the new show in the que, labels it as a conflict, and when one of the old shows stops recording it starts recording the new one. So I miss the first minute of ER but it's usually just recaps anyway.
m_jonis 05-20-06, 09:55 PM Um, there is no HD Tivo unit yet. And also, the Series 2, as of maybe 2 months ago introduced the ability to "clip" the recordings so that it didn't completely cancel the overlap.

Apparently my HD 10-250 didn't get that update.

I guess those thousands, possibly millions, of users with the HR10-250 are just imagining that they have an HD DVR using the TiVo service.................. thanks for letting us all know it doesn't exist
m_jonis 05-22-06, 10:07 PM You're right, I totally forgot about the DTV units. But those aren't made anymore, right? And millions of them? More like thousands
Although I'm not so sure how well an HD DTV Tivo unit would work with Verizon FIOS.

They are still widely available, and produced, and you made no mention of them being used with FIOS, but yes i can see how you got confused and believed the reference to HD TiVo was considering the TiVo Series 3.

We need more info to accurately diagnose the problem. What's your setup, what interface are you using? If it's firewire, it could very well be that HBO is 5c flagged "copy never" by your cable company, although in other areas people have been able to record HBO. Can you record other channels? What DVD recorder do you have, i've never heard of one using firewire and that's the only way the box could copy protect content, besides HDMI/DVI, but OBVIOUSLY you aren't trying it that way.

I'm not the pro on this, but I'll give it a try to answer your questions. I have the Verizon Fios. I have the Motorola QIP 64XX Set Top Box DVR and the new LG Super Multi DVD burner. I have the cable from the wall to the fios box, AV cables from the fios box to the DVD burner and DVD burner to the TV. Verizon does use different cables... it's not just the coax from the wall to the box. Maybe it's just a matter of me playing with the setup a little more.
I can record some local channels, but I can't record HBO live OR what I have recorded on the DVR.
I do have a Tivo system from my old satellite. If there isn't a way around it, I will just go back to Satellite and use my Tivo.
Thanks for your help. I hope this helps!

By A/V cables i assume you are referring to composite video and analog RCA audio connections, right? I need to know what model box you have, is it the 6412, and if so, what phase is it, I, II, or III? What "different cables" does Verizon use? What do these cables connect? What do they look like? I'm pretty familiar with the DCT series of Motorola boxes, but there are slight differences in different models and phases and i need to know what combination of cables/interfaces you are using. Try connecting the "A/V" (composite video and analog audio) to you TV and attempt to view the same content you cannot record to DVD. Does this work?
These STB's CANNOT encrypt or block copy protected content from being recorded via analog video interfaces, so if this problem you are having is occuring using composite video to the DVD recorder, it's probably a problem with your DVD recording unit.
marcust 05-31-06, 02:59 PM Two questions:
1) With my SD box, if I select a program that starts in the future, the box will set a reminder (and presumably switch to that program automatically when the program starts). I also had this functionality w/ my Dish DVR.
However, with the QIP6416, if I click on a program that occurs in the future, the box wants me to set up a recording and gives no option to just do a reminder.
Anyone know how to set reminders (and not recordings) on this DVR?
2) Anyone know how to configure the remote to operate (power on/off) an Infocus 7210 projector)?
Thanks!

1. The QIP does not support a "reminder" feature. This is standard with MS Foundation TV (they actually mention it on the little tutorial on their website). The thinking is that if you can record the program then why bother with a reminder to just switch to it? Makes some sense I guess.
2. Don't know. Since this is a fairly specialized device (vs. a regular TV) you may need to invest in a universal remote. The Harmonys and Channel Masters are very nice, IMHO.

Sounds like Macrovision at work. I have a DV deck that is very sensative to Macrovision, and it happily recorded a live show. I haven't tested DVR shows, and I don't do HBO.
The only way around that is a video stabilizer that can kill the Macrovision signal. Problem is, most can only kill type 1 and type 2 macrovision. My stabilizer will not kill type 3.
As you might expect, finding a cheap stabilizer that will kill all 3 is very tough. If someone knows of one, let me know.
MJDallas 06-13-06, 03:24 PM Any ideas how the Coax or Optical Audio out can be enabled on the QIP6416-2?
The optical audio port should be active. If it is not your box may need to be swapped.
I apologize if this question has already been answered. I have Verizon FiOS HD service with a Motorola QIP6416 decoder box. The QIP6416 has a IEEE 1394 firewire connectors on the back. JeremyC_FiOS TV 06-14-06, 02:21 PM I bought an SDTV as I cannot currently afford to buy an HDTV. I was told that I could still get a high quality image from an HD source such as the Verizon FiOS TV HD receiver and it would be translated to a high quality image. The TV only does 480i max. I have component video and optical audio running through my Sony AV receiver. When I switch to an HD channel, I get just black and white stuff. I do get the audio in Dolby Digital. Was I lied to where I bought my TV? Or perhaps it only translates from other providers. It doesn't seem like it would matter. Please help.

I have also been told that I could get an offair antenna that would work for what I am trying to do.

Sounds like the 5C encryption is preventing the recording of channels that have it implemented. I have the same problem when trying to copy / capture programs to my computer using the firewire port. I can copy / capture the local channels and whatever channels don't have 5C encryption enabled. However when I try to capture / copy from one of the HD channels like Discovery HD, I get nothing....DRAT!!! :(

I was just about to ask this same question. What is the best way to record/cap some HD? I was getting ready to buy a HDTV PC card w/ QAM support but guess thats dosen't work huh. Is D-VHS the best way too go, or firewire to DVD recorder?
Can someone please help.
TIA
According to reports, D-VHS works with the FiOS DVR, but I have also seen reports on limits with this capability. I have not seen anything about it working with a DVD recorder. You should be able to search around a bit and find out what people have been able to do with D-VHS.

HDTV PC Cards only record unencrypted (usually local-HD) chanels via either on-air or QAM.
Currently, D-VHS is the ONLY way to record ENCRYPTED channels via Firewire, since they are the only devices (other than Mitsu's HDD) that obey DTCP "5C" rules.
DVD Recorders only do lo-rez if they have Component Video inputs and/or unencrypted lo-rez via Firewire inputs....none obey DTCP rules...yet...

What's low rez? I thought there' only one rez. As far as I know there are no HD VCRs or DVD recorders.
I'm about to do this today - save some footage from a 6416 to a LiteOn DVD recorder via component.
holl_ands 06-20-06, 05:32 PM I've been making HD recordings off TWC for two years using a JVC D-VHS Recorder.
I have numerous uninterrupted HD/DD5.1 recordings of Movies and Music Concerts
from HBO, SHO, HDNET, inHD1/2 and many other channels...
The firewire interface on a suitably equipped cable (or satellite) STB feeds the D-VHS,
and it records the MPEG2 bit stream onto a D-VHS tape for later playback via Component Video
(or HDMI) interface. I actually punch a "recognition" hole in S-VHS tape to make it into D-VHS.
This means no degradation to the played back 720p or 1080i HD signal.
Suggest you check out HD Recording thread for a list of D-VHS models:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=615224
Difficult part has been getting cable to get the federally mandated Firewire interfaces working properly...
Because of this, eBay/Froogle frequently have "refurbished" (i.e. returned) units for less...
Of course, if you want to pay more, you might want to wait for them to release HD-DVD and BLU-RAY Recorders...

shaggy2002 06-21-06, 01:33 PM A few pages back someone mentioned the size of the hard drives in the QIP64XX boxes for FIOS. They said that 16 = 160 and 32 = 320. Does anyone really have a QIP6432? Everything I see posted is the QIP6416. My install date is the 27th and I can't wait to get FIOSTV so that I can actually receive HD material. I have had a HD TV for over a year now and never received HD content because I didn't want to put up a large antenna. I am pretty bummed that you cannot record a lot of HD content on the QIP6416 without running out of space quickly. Also, several people say that when recording some shows that they will get the first 30 minutes and then their recording is messed up. Some suggest that the channel was changed during the recording and that was the cause of the problem. Does the QIP64XX give you a warning like the Directivos asking if you are sure you want to change the channel because you have a program recording?

Well, I do alot of recording with DVR and I never had any problem with the 30 min recording. The QIP6416 does give you a warning when your recording 2 programs and trying to watch another.
Yes, the QIP does give a warning; however, I have had recordings messed up in the past as well. It doesn't happen very often, and I have no idea why it happens. I expect things will continue to improve as time goes on.
shaggy2002 06-22-06, 08:09 AM BTDT & EMAN79, on average how many hours of HD content are you guys able to get on your QIP6416s?
turbotaz 06-23-06, 11:21 PM I guess no one else has this issue, so maybe it is my box. The problem turns out to be with fast forwarding at 3x or 4x. It happens consistently on just about any recoded show. If I try to fast forward at 3x or 4x, the program freezes on a black screen about 2/3rds of the way through and the only way to bring the program back is to re-start watching from the beginning. I called Verizon and all they suggested is to re-boot the box, which did nothing.
Hello all.

I have noticed the same thing, but have figured out why it happens. If you look at the time remaining when fast forwarding you will see that in 4X mode it does not elapse in a linear fashion. It jumps exponentionally, so when you get 50-75% through the recording, the next step is end of program. If you only use the 1X or 2X FF when close to the end of a recording everything is fine.
bluegoldwing 06-24-06, 11:45 AM Greetings. I have been attempting to connect the 6416 to either my Sony DV CAM or HP DV1000 notebook computer. The DV CAM does not see the device and the HP notebook requires drivers that do not come with the XP OS. I downloaded drivers for the 6412, but they do not work with the 6416. Does anyone know where I can get MS Firewire drivers for the 6416?
BTDT & EMAN79, on average how many hours of HD content are you guys able to get on your QIP6416s?
I have never filled it up to get a definitive number, but on average the QIP claims to use 5% of its capacity to record of hour of HD. This would therefore work out to around 20 hours. This barely makes it for me in the midst of new series episodes and football season. I am looking forward to a "media hub" with significantly more storage.
BTDT & EMAN79, on average how many hours of HD content are you guys able to get on your QIP6416s?
When I fill it up to 91%, its already close to 20 hrs.
a1rodger 06-27-06, 05:41 AM I concur, when I first got the Motorola box I thought I would record the whole season of Smallville to watch later. 18 episodes later the box was full giving a warning that the 1st episode would be deleted.
shaggy2002 06-29-06, 09:07 AM Thanks guys for the Help on the size for HD content. I may have to figure out which shows I really want to watch in HD and record the shows I care less about in SD. I too hope they come out with some kind of "Media Hub" or another DVR with bigger Hard Drives. My wife already hates the dvr because she is so used to the Directv Tivo. I have only been able to play with the new box for two nights, but one thing I am not impressed with is the Series recordings if you say record New Only it doesn't work well for shows that are on 20 times in a week. (ie Pinks, Real World, etc.) I am not crazy about the guide either. I am hoping that the fios/tivo rumors are true or at least the new series 3 boxes are affordable and compatible with FIOS.
DeltaBill 06-29-06, 09:28 AM Shaggy,
I have the same issue with multiple series recordings using Comcast's Moto 6412. This issue is not the STB but the Guide and TV networks. If the "new" flag is not properly set, the DVR will record the show. The DVR software could provide more filter options, but that would only cover the symptom and will not completely solve the problem. I have already stopped recording/watching some shows because of the issues and will start to email the show sponsers (cpoying in the networks) to let them know why I do not watch the show and see there ads anymore.
shaggy2002 06-29-06, 09:33 AM DeltaBill, You are probably right because a couple of those shows do not show descriptions and so it thinks it is new. The Directv tivo was really good with the guide and the repeat markers although a few times it would show up in the guide as a repeat and in reality the show was new. I hope this improves over time. :)

I was on the phone with tech support with other problems and mentioned how poor the guide is. He said that is the first time he heard of it. I find the guide is wrong most of the time and when it does have info it is very incomplete. Try an actor/actress search.
I apologize if someone has asked this question before but has anyone else lost all their DVR recordings after losing electrical power for an extended period of time? I live in northern Virginia and have had FIOS for 3 months. Been fairly happy with it. But we've been having a nasty storm season and two recent power outages ended up wiping out all the recorded programs off my DVR. Needless to say, this is really annoying when you are saving several episodes of a show for later viewing.
Anyone else lose their recorded shows after power outages like this?
UPDATE: I just noticed that even though none of my recorded programs show up on the DVR listings, it says my hard drive is 67% full. So, I think there is a good chance that a power outage doesn't necessarily always wipe out all the recorded shows, it just screws up the program listings somehow. Regardless, now I'm in the worst of all worlds: My recorded program listings are missing and inaccessable but the shows are still on the hard drive eating up limited disk capacity!! I've called Verizon for help, but so far no response.

Didn't have a problem like that but I can see how the HD inside the DVR could become corrupt during a power outttage. All your saved video is still on the drive, but due to the HD corruption, the DVR can't get to it. On a PC the data might be recoverable with special software but on a simple DVR that's not possible. :(

holl_ands 07-07-06, 06:21 PM Some/Most D-VHS Recorders will record D-VHS onto a standard "unpunched" S-VHS tape by simply pressing the "D-VHS" button prior to making a D-VHS recording---but it's easy to forget (resulting in a standard S-VHS recording) and it takes much longer for the recorder to recognize that it's a D-VHS recording rather than S-VHS.
The Keoki article described how you can modify the insides of the recorder so that the SVHS/DVHS recognition pin is permanently disabled in the D-VHS position....begging the question on how you make an S-VHS/VHS recordings...
But I've found that it is much easier to simply punch a D-VHS recognition hole into an S-VHS cassette, matching the S-VHS recognition hole on the other side. For this purpose, I use a medium sized needle nosed pliers and simply measure over the right amount from the edge and firmly punch in a hole--the insides of the Fuji "Red Box" S-VHS tapes are already half-way punched so it's easy.
I buy boxes of ST-120 and ST-160 tapes from www.tapewarehouse.com
Since most S-VHS tapes will not work reliably, check the D-VHS threads on which S-VHS tapes will work: such as Fuji Red Box and Maxell Black Box tapes....and many people use "slightly used" tapes...
A D-VHS recorder needs to be fed via an IEEE-1394 Firewire interface from an STB/DVR in order to make SD/HD recordings--but if Verizon hasn't messed up the copy protect bits, the HDCP "5C" copy protect built into D-VHS Recorders should permit you to record nearly anything on FiOS (except perhaps PPV).

Hi all. I wanted to bump this question up, as I didn't see or understand the responses.
I've had my QIP6416 for about 8 months, and really want to archive to DVD. I don't have a stand alone DVD-burner, only PC based.
What is the best way to pull the signal out of the QIP6416 digitally, and into my PC so I can burn some 480i DVDs of HD content?

I believe that currently the only thing that can be transferred to PC from the QIPs is local programming. All other channels are 5C encrypted and can only be recorded to a compatible D-VHS recorder.
So, that begs the question as to whether there are any 5C DVD burners out there....?
BTW, I believe another sticky thread on this forum contains a huge amount of information and experiences on this topic. It is, unfortunately, 94 pages long.

I saw that other big thread, but it was too intimidating to dig through :(
Any other ideas out there?
cyberfly502 07-07-06, 10:33 PM Hi.
With the Fios DVR box, if I have it hooked up via standard coax cables (the out on the box hooked up to the in on the dvd, and the out on dvd hooked to the in on tv) would this enable me to record standard def stuff.
I am not talking anything special. A standard dvd recorder, pushing play on the dvr and record on the dvd.
This is the set up I have now with the cable company, and I have never had a problem copying anything from HBO, PPV, or any other channel.
This is the one thing that would keep me from getting Fios, as I archive lots of things from TV.
Can this be done with the Fios DVR?
Thanks

There's no reason this shouldn't work, as the DVR doesn't know whether you are viewing or recording the analog output. The only recording problem is in terms of trying to get the *digital* content off of the DVR disk, especially the HD content.
From what I've read, people *have* been successful doing with with D-VHS recorders, which are actually quite reasonable right now in terms of pricing. Yes, I would rather have it recorded to disk or DVD too, but this appears to be a viable option for offloading HD content.
Maybe this has been answered before but I could not find it when I searched.
Can you record HD content (local plus HBO, HDNET et al) from a QIP6416 to a DVD recorder using either component or S-Video 480i outputs from the QIP6416? If so, is the output 16:9 anamorphic or 16:9 letterbox?

Yes, you can.
I don't have my manual with me, but there if you enter SETUP you can specify how 16:9 output should be displayed on a 4:3 screen (I think it is letter box by default). You will also need to set Component to output as 480i or it will just show up as garbage on the other end. I am assuming your DVD recorder needs 480i, right?
From memory, I believe the way to enter setup is:
1. Turn off your DVR
2. Immediately hit the MENU button. This will take you to the SETUP screen.
3. Set display to 4:3, output to letterbox or cropped, and component output to 480i.
Yes, you can.

But is the output letterboxed on a DVD recorded using the S-Video output of the QIP6416 (with black bars on all four sides) if played on a 16:9 HD TV in Full mode on the TV or do you have to use Zoom mode to fill the screen?
sunlover 07-09-06, 10:50 AM Getting FIOS tv 7/20 in Tampa. Question on dvr function not seen asked on all the prior pages.
1) Coming from direct tv hd tivo. Does fios dvr have the 2 tuner buffer at least 30 minutes long as direct tv hd tivo had?
2) Can you pause buffer and easily switch to 2nd paused buffer, or are you put to live tv, and then have to rewind? Or is this not even possible?
I like to watch 2 things, pausing one, then catching up on the 2nd tuner, then returning to paused 1st tuner.
3) Has verizon mastered this area or does it leave alot to be desired. Thanks, Tim.

linksavage 07-09-06, 11:57 AM I don't believe the current fios motorola 6416 dvr allows this. If you pause a show, then change the channel, you lose the pause of the channel you were watching before you switched. If you pause a show, then switch to a show that has already been recorded (not changing the channel), then I think the original show you paused will still be there when you stop watching the recorded show. Then, if you switch back again from the paused channel to the recorded show, it will remember where you were when you stopped watching the recorded show.
Having said all that, I sure hope Verizon adds this capability ... I didn't have directivo before fios, so I haven't been missing that capability, but I will be now!
sunlover 07-09-06, 02:11 PM Pestep, I found out you have to go to the list area and do what you described. If you have 2 recordings going, can you pause a recording, go to the other recording, pause that, and come back to the 1st one where you paused it, or does it start from the beginning of the recording making you fast forward to your original paused point? Thanks, Tim.

If you record over S-Video with letterbox set and then play it on a 16:9 screen in "Normal" mode you will indeed get black bars on all 4 sides (the top and bottom ones are added by the DVR, the left and right ones by your TV). Yes, ZOOM should eliminate this.

Bummer! Looks like I will stick with my DirecTV HD Tivo until Verizon and Motorola fix this and add the 30 minute pause/buffer/switch channels capability.

So in effect, you can do the same thing you are used to with a DirecTivo, but it requires recording both shows, and a lot more button presses. I suppose one could program a Harmony remote to take care of the key presses.

I understand. The ability to pause one thing, switch to another, and still have it paused there when you come back was great. I also wish that the buffer was retained when you return from watching a VOD program. I think the box has the processing capacity for this, so I'm not sure what the design decision involved here was.
Despite all of this, the major reason for moving to FiOS is: Greatly Enhanced Picture Quality. The HD blows D* away and the SD should make D* ashamed to be running a TV service. I was a D* customer for 10 years, so had the first-hand experience of watching their PQ degrade over time. Sometimes I just can't believe how good the FiOS picture is. Outstanding!
This is, of course, just my opinion. That's what forums are for.
Warehouse 07-11-06, 11:38 PM I apologize if someone has asked this question before but has anyone else lost all their DVR recordings after losing electrical power for an extended period of time? I live in northern Virginia and have had FIOS for 3 months. Been fairly happy with it. But we've been having a nasty storm season and two recent power outages ended up wiping out all the recorded programs off my DVR. Needless to say, this is really annoying when you are saving several episodes of a show for later viewing.
Anyone else lose their recorded shows after power outages like this?
I had this problem after a power loss as well. I rebooted and the shows reappeared and I was able to watch them. Shortly after that problem my box started rebooting on its own. I would get shows cut in 3 parts with 5 minute chunks missing when the box rebooted. Same thing was happened when I tried to watch a show. Called Verizon and they were at my house the next day with a new box. So far I haven't had any trouble with this one.
eq_shadimar 07-12-06, 12:04 PM Ok well this is an experience for sure. At first I was not able to get any picture out of the firewire port of the QIP6416 to my Mits 65869 TV. I had Verizon perform a "deep reset" (their words). This allowed all the analog channels (2-50) and about half of the HD locals to come through but nothing else. Personally I think that their system or the box itself is incorrectly flagging the content.
They are coming out on Saturday (my request - otherwise it would have been today) to replace the box. My "but it worked fine with the Comcast HD-DVR box" comment seemed to light a fire under them for some reason :)
I have my doubts that this will fix the issue but I will stay on them until it is fixed. Personally I think that their system or the box itself is incorrectly flagging the content since I can't get HD locals which should not be flagged at all.
I will make sure to post the results back here.

FIOSINTAMPA 07-14-06, 03:08 PM I'm thinking of getting a second box and putting it in the same room as my first one. Is there a way to set the remotes so they don't interfere with each other? I looked all over the manual and setup and can't find anything. That was one of the nice features on the TiVo.
What were the Motorola folks thinking when they put those tiny hard drives in the boxes. I have a pair of QIP 6416's (in the same room I might add). Did they not realize that since the hard drives were too small to record any appreciable amount of HD, that a person would be forced to have two or more boxes in the same room to be able to get any results at all. The DISH receivers did have the edge there with the RF remotes. Here is how I addressed it. This is not a good solution but a weak work-around. First of all, I have a 65" projection TV. I set one of my 6416's on the extreme right side of the top of it. I put the other 6416 in the component cabinet to the left of the TV. If you are real careful, you can operate them independently with the same remote. There is not too much dead space in between them for the remote, if ya know what I mean. However, this is a weak solution. So, the next thing that I tried is buying a remote IFR extender at Circuit City or some such place and putting the sending unit in front of the 6416 on top of the TV and then building a barricade around the front of the 6416 with file folders standing on edge to shield the unit from Infrared coming from the remote control. I then placed the receiving unit of the extender pair around to one-side of me so that I had to point my remote at it, at such an angle that the other 6416 could not pick up the signal from it. Keep in mind that the only time you will have issues (at least to my knowledge) is when both 6416's are physically powered on. I believe you could operate them side-by-side as long as you only had one or the other powered on at a time. That is where the trick is and the need to have the shields around one of them. i.e. you could have one of the boxes recording something that you wanted to record but have it powered off as far as the remote is concerned and the remote would not have any effect on the box. Where you have issues without the shield mechanism is when both boxes are powered on at the same time. That is when it hits the fan. The shield method will fix that however, it is a bit crude. Two things that I asked Verizon before signing up for FIOS is if they had a wireless (RF) remote on the DVR's. YES, they said. I already knew that a 160 GB harddrive was pretty much worthless for recording HD TV. I asked them if they had a way to connect an external hard drive to the boxes. YES they said. I was specifically told by one of the people that I talked who had talked to her "GURU" that USB 2.0 support would allow me to connect an external USB hard drive to the 6416 and that would solve my space problems. Guess what, if I could have done that, I wouldn't have the need for two of them. Hence, my remote problem would have been solved as well. To date, I can find nobody at Verizon who will tell me how to connect a external hard drive. All they tell me is it is not supported. This is beginning to sound like a RANT. So, I am done.
eq_shadimar 07-18-06, 12:06 PM Ok well after lots of conversations with Verizon FiOS TV tech support I finally got to someone who understands what Firewire is. They even knew to ask me if my TV was 5C compliant woohoo! Anyway the long and the short of it is that they are going to "take a serious look at our signals and get back to you". So hopefully the engineers will be looking at the issue. I told them I would be calling them back every couple of days for updates.

asem111 07-22-06, 10:31 AM I got verizon installed last week and they have already swapped out the HD-DVR boxes twice.
I checked, and I have fimware version 17.10. I had originally connected the dvr to my pioneer plasma's own settop box via HDMI. The plasmas settop box then connects to the panel via its own proprietary video cable. anyway, this setup didn't work. could not tune into the HD channels successfully from a non-HD channel.
I currently have the DVR connected via the component video cables (not a biggee) but am wondering, wasn't the latest firmware supposed to fix this issue. also, is 17.10 the latest version?
eq_shadimar 07-23-06, 05:32 PM I fixed my firewire issue. I updated the firmware in my TV from 1.02 to 1.04 and all of my firewire problems went away. I still need to do some testing with my D-VHS deck but hopefully everything will go ok.

Ok, all this sounds very complicated. But, since the power button is a toggle, couldn't you just have one off while the other was on? The way the remote would only operated the device that was on. Pressing power on the remote would turn one off and the other on?
Just a thought.

Gerryex 08-05-06, 06:02 PM Hi ALL,
I just got hooked up with FiOS TV yesterday and so far I am quite pleased with the picture quality vs. DirecTV. I also got the HD DVR and while certainly not a Tivo, it is very serviceable. However I'm having a couple of problems.
First when I set up a "series" recording I'm careful to select the options before telling it to record. One of the options I select is New Only and the other is to record only at the time of the showing I want. For example I set one up for Deadwood at the 9 PM showing on HBO HD, but I got many more scheduled recordings than just this Sunday and next Sunday. Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
The other problem is in the Search. I used the "HDTV" option in the search, but the listing showed many programs that although their descriptions had "HD" in it they were NOT on any HD channel. Again am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?
Other than the above, it seems to be working quite nice and is about 100 times faster than the DirecTV HD Tivo!
Thanks,
Gerry
Gerry,
Unfortunately, Fios still has a lot of work to do before its guide data is up to snuff. Most of the shows on the major networks (ABC, CBS, etc) are properly flagged, but dozens of shows on the cable channels are not. As you found, just about every HBO series is improperly flagged on Fios right now. This is Verizon's fault -- a configuration issue.
That said, the Microsoft software is pretty good at avoiding repeats, so once you get that first Deadwood (Sunday @ 9pm) on your DVR, it should skip the repeat showings.
The other problem is in the Search. I used the "HDTV" option in the search, but the listing showed many programs that although their descriptions had "HD" in it they were NOT on any HD channel. Again am I doing something wrong or is this a bug?

Hi bfdtv,
I figured it was something to do with FiOS's guide data, but its nice to know that its a common problem rather than "just me!!"
Do you know where we should complain to about these problems? Do you have an e-mail address or phone number?
I must say, however, that the quality of the picture is much much better than from what I was getting on DirecTV. I watch the two Stargates on Sci Fi and since they are letter-boxed I use the zoom feature of my TV to make them fill the 16:9 screen. That makes the picture fuzzier, but with the DirecTV picture's quality so low the zoomed in picture was only barely watchable. With FiOS, while or course still fuzzy, it was a much better picture.
Last night I watched Mr and Mrs Smith on HBO HD and the picture was stunning!!!
So overall with all of 2 days use of FiOS TV, I'm quite pleased and am certainly willing to trade off a slightly quirky DVR for a much better picture!!
Thanks,
Gerry
P. S. The FiOS DRV responds about 100 times faster to recording commands than the DirecTV HD Tivo. With the HD Tivo, even if you want to start recording the program you are currently watching it takes about a minute or more to respond. With the FiOS DVR, it responds immediately!!
I currently have Comcast with the 6412 Motorola HD-DVR box, and am waiting for FIOS TV to come to NJ at the end of this year. The biggest problem I have with the 6412 is that the channels change very very slowly when I use the remote to change channels. Does the FIOS 6416 box change channels quickly???? Any noticeable lag between pressing the channel number and the channel actually changing?

Digital channels will never change as fast as analog channels, because there is encryption and compression involved. Whenever you tune a channel, it must be decrypted and decompressed before it shows up on your screen. This is par for the course, regardless of whether you have digital cable or satellite.
As far as digital boxes go, the 6416 changes channels relatively fast.

It is much faster than Comcast. :)
The OnDemand is much quicker too.
Is guide data broken on every FiOS TV system, or just newer FiOS TV systems? Let's find out.
Create "new episode" series recordings for Stargate: SG1 (Scifi), Deadwood (HBO-HD), and The Wire (HBO-HD).
Check your Scheduled screen for episodes the DVR intends to record.
On the Scheduled screen, you should only see Stargate: SG1 recordings for 9pm on August 11 and August 18. You should only see Deadwood recordings for 9pm on August 13 and August 20. You should not see any The Wire episodes on the Scheduled screen, because they are in the rerun season.
Note times quoted in eastern standard time (EST).
Does your FiOS TV system pass this test? What market are you in?

For Sci-Fi it would not work. Sci-Fi only states New or Repeat for current season episodes & Movies. Season 10 of SG1 will show New or Repeat in the guide Data, however any SG-1 episode shown from previous seasons will not have either of them.
The DVR IPG Software can only go by the info provided by the networks to the Guide provider.
The DVR IPG Software can only go by the info provided by the networks to the Guide provider.
On the FiOS system in N. VA, all three tests failed. I picked those examples because the DVRs from competing providers in the area all passed with flying colors. Comcast in Arlington (Scientific Atlanta/SARA), Comcast in DC (Motorola), RCN in DC (Motorola), and Cox in VA (Scientific Atlanta/SARA and Motorola/Passport) passed all three tests.
The default behavior on the Microsoft DVR platform used by FiOS appears to be more sensitive to flagging than iGuide, Passport, and SARA, because it treats every program without a repeat or first-run flag as a first-run program for the purposes of scheduling.
Gerryex 08-08-06, 12:40 PM Hi ALL,
I just got off the phone with FiOS tech support and the guy I spoke with told me that Verizon is aware of the scheduled "new only" recording problems along with the other problem in the search for "HD only" showing any program that is in HD on an HD channel also showing up on non-HD channels. He said they are working on a firmware update but didn't have a target date as to when the update will be available. The best thing I can recommend is that we all keep calling so that they get more and more complaints and hopefully will fix it sooner.
By the way, CableCard IS available now as I just ordered one for my Sony TV. Its only $2.95 per month and should give you all of the channels in your package but no guide or interactive features. This way with the DVR I can be recording 2 programs and watching something else live at the same time!! Couldn't do that with the DirecTV HD Tivo!!!

Get ready to pay a $24.95 installation fee. That's what they charged me. CS never mention anything about intallation fee till I got my bill
The one-time $19.95 activation fee is new; it affects all orders placed as of ~3 weeks ago.
Note they do waive all of the other install fees when you commit to a year of service.

Gerryex 08-12-06, 02:09 PM Hi ALL,
I had another funny thing happen with the DVR. Once it was installed the first series I programed it for was Deadwood at 9 PM on Sundays on HBO-HD. This is when I found out about the bug that caused all the duplicate showings to also be scheduled. I then carefully deleted all the duplicates until I had only the Sunday showings I wanted.
As is my habit, even with the vaunted Tivo, I always check the scheduled recordings a day or two ahead and especially on the day of the recordings. So yesterday I was checking on the scheduled recordings for Sunday, and I should have had two things for 9 PM: The 4400 and Deadwood. But only the 4400 was there! I went into the guide for Sunday and at 9 PM on HBO-HD it showed Deadwood with multiple red dots indicating that it should be in the scheduled recordings. But I checked again and it was not scheduled. I then removed the series recording and selected the single episode and saw the single red dot, but it still did not show up in the sched recordings!! I tried the same thing several times but each time in the guide or a search listing the episode showed up with a red dot, but it would not be in the sched recordings.
So I scheduled a manual recording for that time and the manual recording then showed up in the sched recordings.
A few hours later after watching a couple of shows I went into the sched recordings and it showed a conflict. I went to the conflict and it was the manual recording from above. Why? Because Deadwood was now back in the sched recordings and was conflicting with the 4400 and the manual recording!!! So I removed the manual recording and now its back to the way it should have been. STRANGE!!
Also, this morning I had scheduled a couple of original Star Treks from G4 and they were IN the sched recordings, but they were not recorded. This is the first time I've seen that something in the sched recording list was not recorded. This last problem is more disturbing than any of the other problems!
Gerry
EDIT: I just answered my Star Trek problem. G4 is in the Sports Package and not being a sports person I do not subscribe to the Sports Package. So that's why they didn't record!! Although I'll miss seeing some ST episodes (for the millionth time!!) its not worth it to sign up for that extra package. But at least I know why they didn't record as I want to be able to build up confidence in trusting that once a show is in the sched recordings list that it REALLY will get recorded!!
barry kelman 08-12-06, 02:35 PM How does the FIOS DVR compare to the Comcast 6412 wrt conflict resolution speed? With the Comcast box, if you've got more than about 20 or 30 series recordings scheduled, any time it detects a conflict it just locks up for 20 or 30 seconds. Is the FIOS DVR any better?

Hi barry,
I never had the Comcast 6412 so I can't compare the two, and at the present time I only have about 5 series recordings set up. Under these circumstances when there is a conflict there is no lock-up and I just go to the conflict and delete one of the recordings and the system responds within a second or two.
Gerry
mjwedeking 08-12-06, 03:21 PM Yup, QIP6416 is the same. When you set up a recording and a conflict exist the box will lock up for almost a minute without any warning. I have got into a habbit of pressing up or down after pressing record in that situation or after pressing enter in some situations. The TiVo was nice in this type of situation because it would give you a "Wait" sign to let you know not to continue pressing enter or record. The menu system on the 6416 can get very slow with a lot of recordings.
Dealing with conflicts, I found out not to resolve conflicts unless I really want to make sure a certain program will record. On the 6416, shows will be shown in the schedule list even if it is not going to record it.
I want TiVo S3.
Gerryex 08-16-06, 11:25 AM Hi ALL,
Something strange happened with my FiOS DVR yesterday. I had Rescue Me (10 PM - 11 PM, EDT) and Futurama (10:30 PM - 11 PM, EDT) scheduled to record and they both started properly. I began to watch Rescue Me at around 10:20 PM and everything was working properly.
Then at around 10:50 PM I was approximately at the 40 minute point and the program rapidly jumped from the show into a commercial, which I though was very odd. To make a long story short the DVR for some reason abruptly stopped recording and jumped into the live feed for FX which at that point it was in a commercial.
At the time I didn't realize it stopped recording and went back to start watching from the beginning and FF'ed to the same point and was able to continue watching. As is my habit, I sometimes bring up the progress bar and the end marker showed 51 minutes but it was no longer moving. Then I realized that it stopped recording, and that I had lost the last 9 minutes.
What's even stranger is that I looked at Futurama and it stopped recording at EXACTLY the same time as Rescue Me stopped - 10:51 PM!!!
So something glitched the DVR and stopped recording both shows! I started up a recording for the repeat of Rescue Me and that went all the way through. And this morning it was properly recording a movie for me.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Thanks,
Gerry

I am also happy that you will be the "default guinea pig" for those of us who haven't upgraded to an HDMI switching receiver. Take a look at post #1053 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=558602&page=36&pp=post1053) from the New moto 6412 with HDMI and SATA thread. Our 6416s have the identical menu. See if fiddling with any of the HDMI settings helps. Also one of the latest posts (as of today) in that thread indicate that the 6412 is configured properly although the connection itself isn't so hot. When I first got my service installed in January, you could only get coaxial or optical 5.1 audio using component cables. Verizon updated the firmware in April to solve that problem. Unfortunately, at least the last time I checked, the only mode that is enabled is AUTO. In other words, if a station is flagging their content 5.1 even when it's not (like WJLA and WUSA), you can't force the 6416 into L-PCM to get analog surround sound through Pro Logic. I still don't understand the PASSTHROUGH function. Reading back through this thread would probably be instructive if you haven't already, but be prepared for a lot of digression. I am interested in upgrading to the RX-V1600 or HTR-5990 so I hope you'll keep us updated with your experience. Sorry I can't answer your questions directly.
Ken Ross 08-17-06, 05:30 PM I live in VA and just signe dup for FIOS. Does anyone use HDMI on their box and run it to an HDMI compatible receiver (Yamaha RVX 1600) with out issues? Mine down converts HD to 480p, which is weird because my HD DVD works fine. Is there an HDCP issue going on here? Is there a Patch?
Stepmback, I had actually posted a similar question in a Pioneer Elite VSX-84 thread. I got no replies and yours is the first I've seen using the FIOS box and an HDMI switching receiver. I'm really disappointed to hear your results. I was actually considering the Yamaha RXV 2600, but I'm leaning to the Pioneer which has 4 HDMI inputs.
I've had no trouble using the FIOS box and a Monoprice 5X1 HDMI switcher. Since I had no trouble with that, I thought the HDMI receivers might be OK....now I'm wondering.
I'm not sure what settings there are in the Yamaha, but I know the Pioneer has settings that asks for a chosen output (480p, 720p, 1080i). If the Yammy is anything like that, have you checked those settings?
Something strange happened with my FiOS DVR yesterday...
...
So something glitched the DVR and stopped recording both shows! I started up a recording for the repeat of Rescue Me and that went all the way through. And this morning it was properly recording a movie for me.
Has anyone else seen anything like this?
Thanks,
Gerry
Hey Gerry,
I have had a few occurences (but nothing very recent) of the FiOS DVR having strange recording behavior. It is hard to say what happened. I have had recordings stop in the middle, totally blank recordings, and recordings that weren't blank but required a restart of the DVR before I could access them. I have also had recordings that were dropped altogether.
Like I said, I haven't seen any of these in the last 4 months maybe. I also have never figured out why they happened.
If you start seeing this in the near term, try restarting your box. If you see it on a regular basis, you may have a bad box.
stepmback 08-18-06, 10:09 AM with the STB on, hit power and then Menu.
make sure your output settings are correct.
When I run direct to projector (Ruby) via HDMI, no problem 1080i. But when run through recieve down rez to 480p.

Ken,
The Yamaha is essentially a repeater not a switch, eventhough it does switch inputs. In my case between two HDMI outputs on the reciver.
I also have a Gefen 4 x HDMI switch and have no problems at all when running through the switch WITHOUT going through the Yamaha. But when ever the Yamaha is brought into the mix ex. DVR via HDMI to Yamaha via HDMI to Projector it down resezes to 480p. If I go from DVR via HDMI to Switch via HDMI to Projector it works fine. So it would appear it is something in the cable box. Also when I run my HD DVD via HDMI to Yamaha via HDMI to Projector it works fine... no down resolution.
I will see if I can go into the box and monkey around with the settings.
Also... when I originally configured system and did quick switch of the HDMI cables from switch to Yamaha it worked fine for about 2 minutes, then I notices the down resolution occuring. I even checked the "Info" screen on Ruby and sure enough it was receiving a 480p signal on an HD station and it looked 480p. When I swapped back, problem went away.
I will post my results.
billodom 08-18-06, 12:03 PM I am happy to see some discussion on the 6416's performance when connecting via HDMI. Hopefully we can keep this dialogue going until everybody knows what the situation is. The first question is, is there a problem with Motorola's implementation of the HDMI spec that is in the 6416? We need a definitive yes-or-no answer to this.
To further the discussion, can someone please explain the PASS-THROUGH function found in the Audio Output section under the Additional HDMI Settings under the User Settings?
Last, concerning the slight audio synch that has been reported. Obviously HDMI is designed to carry video and audio, so I assume this becomes a non-issue once a properly functioning HDMI connection takes place between the 6416 and an AV receiver with HDMI switching.
Gerryex 08-18-06, 05:19 PM Hi ALL,
Well, I had another funny thing happen with my DVR!
In one of my previous posts I talked about how the last 9 minutes of two programs got lost. One of those was Rescue Me. I'm still keeping my DirecTV HD Tivo active for a couple more weeks so I was able to finish watching RM on it. But I set up the FiOS DVR to record the later showing of RM as a test.
Yesterday I wanted to watch the last part of RM on the FiOS DVR so I started it up and went into FF1, then 2 then 3 and finally FF4. The images flew by and the progress bar was moving quickly. Then at around the 35 minute mark, the screen went black just for a second and then came back into the menu screen where you can select a previously recorded show to watch. The inset image was a live channel. (I believe the blank screen was my TV re-syncing from RM's 480i to the live channel's 1080i)
I went back into RM and all I could do was start from the beginning. This time I only went at FF3 and at around the 45 minute mark the same thing happened! I tried it one more time but stopped at around the 40 minute mark and just went into play. But then about 5 or 10 minutes in play it still did the same thing!!
In frustration I just deleted it but in retrospect I should have kept it. After that I watched another show and had no problems but I didn't use FF much for that show. And on Wed night I watched all of Flightplan and had no problems at all. Note that the possible "bad" recording of RM was in the DVR since Tues night.
I find it funny that the two big problems I had was with a specific episode of RM, and that I had recorded and watched last week's RM with no problems.
I call all of this into Verizon and they assigned a trouble ticket to this and my previous problem: FLCP790077.
At this point I don't know if these are legitimate bugs or just a bad box. I'll keep you informed!!
Gerry
Gerryex,
The bug is when you hit FF3 or FF4, the program goes straight to the end when it's within the last portion of the program. Don't use FF3 or FF4 when past the halfway point.
I don't think I've ever had it erase part of the program though.
I've got a big list of little problems with this DVR. This is a Microsoft product. It's functional... there's just a bunch of little things wrong with it.
And why the heck is G4 included in the Sports package?!?!?! I coudn't figure that out either.
PS... this thread has way too many topics in it to be useful. We need a forum, not a thread!
Is it true the comcast silver remote can be used for the 30s skip and tuner swap on the fios moto6416? Has anyone actually tryed it? Thanks.

I have used the silver comcast remote for both functions and they work fine. I don't see much use for the tuner swap, but the 30 sec skip is ok. BTW most of the silver remote keys can be reprogrammed for different functions.

Hi chaze,
I didn't know that in FF3 or 4 it will jump to the end, but it also happened in FF1 or 2 or even play.
It looks like I need the DVR swaped out. Last night I had a scheduled recording with no conflicts which simply failed to record. And this morning I was just watching a one hour show and all by itself it jumped from the 37 minute mark to the 58 minute mark. And its repeatable!!
So I just called and I'm getting a new box Monday morning. Hopefully this one will work better.
Its too bad that the DVR is so buggy as the picture is miles higher in qulity than DirecTV. The CSR I was talking to did say they are aware of the bugs and are working on them as we speak. Hopefully in the near future the DVR will be as reliable as a Tivo!!
Gerry

This is good news. I've been wondering about that. Do all of the other functions work the same on the CC remote? Does the Vz remote have any keys that the CC doesn't? Also as far as programming the Vz remote...can it learn by "reading" another remotes function? As soon as my Vz units are installed I'll be turning in 3 Comcast DVRs... hmmm. wonder how much CC charges for a "lost" remote. :D

The CC remote has an input key that controls the TV input which is very helpful if you have several input sources (e.g. VCR, DVD, etc.). It also has an aspect key which I assume is to control the TVs aspect ratio. The input key works on my Panny TH50PX60U but the aspect key unfortunately won't, and I haven't been able to locate the code to change the aspect ratio on a universal remote.
Man, I just saw the Verizon FIOS Home Media DVR setup, and it rocks.
Here there using 1 QIP-6416 STB as the master and all of your other TV's must have at least the /\/\oto QIP 2500 STB. Plus you have to have a Verizon FIOS Home Network service.
The kids watched a recorded show off the Living Room DVR in there room while we all watched Football in the living room.
Very Cool.
Jan. 2007 is the date for FIOS TV service in my area. Cant wait.
Anyone else have this new Verizon Home Media DVR system yet?
SJKurtzke 08-21-06, 01:14 PM Can the FiOS DVR downconvert an HD channel to 480i/p for recording? I have an SDTV in my room and would like to be able to record stuff from HDNet, etc. without having it take up unnecessary space.
Can the FiOS DVR downconvert an HD channel to 480i/p for recording? I have an SDTV in my room and would like to be able to record stuff from HDNet, etc. without having it take up unnecessary space.
Yes, it downconverts HD to SD through its s-video output.
SJKurtzke 08-21-06, 04:28 PM Yes, it downconverts HD to SD through its s-video output.
But will it allow you to choose what format you want to record in?
Like if I want to record "Dead Like Me" on HDNet, which is shown in 1080i, can I record that show in 480i?
fmtrojan 08-21-06, 05:27 PM So is the PIP function on the remote just for future use?
I have an hd/dvr and a cablecard on one tv and a standard stb on another tv.
I have had some problems with FF as mentioned above.
I don't like the fact that when watching VOD, there is no time bar to see where you are at in the video, etc.
My only other 'complaint' would be that the rewind/ff/pause/play buttons should be set apart more like the directivo remote control.
Can the FiOS DVR downconvert an HD channel to 480i/p for recording? I have an SDTV in my room and would like to be able to record stuff from HDNet, etc. without having it take up unnecessary space.
My understanding is that the Motorola FIOS STB does not put out a 16:9 anamorphic video through the S-Video output and thus when you record to a DVD recorder you will have to watch the DVD using Zoom mode (instead of Normal mode) on your 16:9 HD TV. The resulting quality is not as good as an anamorphic video.
But will it allow you to choose what format you want to record in?
Like if I want to record "Dead Like Me" on HDNet, which is shown in 1080i, can I record that show in 480i?
Not to the DVR. The DVR can only record the original digital bitstream from the digital SD and HD channels.
Obviously, everything will be output through s-video in 480i, regardless of the source. HD content is output through s-video in 480i letterbox.
So is the PIP function on the remote just for future use?
Correct.
My only other 'complaint' would be that the rewind/ff/pause/play buttons should be set apart more like the directivo remote control.
Can you say universal remote? :) The URC MX-900 is the ultimate DVR remote (http://mysite.verizon.net/fiosdvr/harmony/MX-900.jpg), imo, but it is expensive and can be tedious to setup. The Harmony remotes (http://mysite.verizon.net/fiosdvr/harmony/720.jpg) are easy to setup and maintain, but the buttons are a lot smaller and harder to use by feel.
cmburke99 08-22-06, 07:03 AM Have had FiOS service for almost a week now and am very pleased overall. I have noticed, however, that the QIP6416 DVR makes a somewhat distracting "clicking" noise when it records programming. I really only notice it when my TV is off and the only thing running is the recording DVR. Is this something that I will just have to learn to live with or is it possible there is something wrong with the DVR? Wanted to see if anyone had any similar experiences. Thanks.
Every DVR has a hard drive, so all will make some noise. However, a clicking noise doesn't sound normal unless you are a few feet from the box.
If you can hear that noise from >6 feet then the hard drive in the box is probably defective.
Ken Ross 08-22-06, 06:38 PM Correct.

The screen looks pretty, but hard buttons usable by feel are far more practical in my opinion. The T3 lacks hard buttons for almost all DVR functions.
Dreamcat 08-22-06, 07:14 PM I'll be getting Fios internet and HDTV next week.
I ordered the Multi-room DVR as part of my service, so I'll let you know how well it works.
I am switching from Brighthouse for the supposedly better quality looking SD channels of Fios, and a few extra HD channels that Brighthouse doesn't have.
My only fear is that the box will miss some of my recordings, as the Brighthouse box never has.

Bfdtv, I used to feel the same way. Mark Rubin convinced me to give the T3 a try since he owned one and felt that same way about hard buttons. In short order the T3 won me over. There's never been a touch screen remote I felt that way about. The unit has enough hard buttons to give you about 90% of what you use frequently. The other thing is that the T3 is so easy to program. But I can understand people feeling either way about these remotes....it's a very personal thing.

fmtrojan 08-28-06, 11:58 AM I've had service for about 2 weeks. Some of the problems I've read here have begun to pop up on my HD/DVR:
-Can't Pause, FF, or RW Live TV. In fact, channel freezes and I have to change the channel back and forth to watch TV on that channel.
-Can't access recorded problems. This happened all of a sudden.
With rumors of Tivo S3's upcoming launch, I will definitely take a hard look at it--even if it's $800.
fmtrojan,
Call Verizon and have them replace the DVR. It's also possible your signal level is too low -- that causes problems for the DVR.
fmtrojan 08-28-06, 12:45 PM They reset my box for the 2nd time. If I call back again they are going to replace my box. Since I don't imagine my box will be error-free from now on, I'll probably have another box in a few weeks. I will ask the tech to check my signal level.
Seemed like I had a nice tech guy (which I equate to being brutally honest), so I asked him about most of the 'HDMI additional functions' (when you turn the box off and hit menu). He said that his manual did not include anything relating to the "pass-through" audio options and that he couldn't even get that menu on his interactive guide because his box was not connected using HDMI.
Ken Ross 08-28-06, 02:27 PM fmtrojan, also check the wiring. I've found that existing wiring is seldom a good option depending upon age and condition.

Don't know since I haven't tried it, but I will. BTW I called Verizon today to check on the availability of ESPN's GamePlan (college football) and was told they aren't carrying it yet. We need to find someone to complain to about programming gripes.

I talked to Fios Tech Support today to complain about my DVR sporadically not taping David Letterman (anyone else have this problem?) and the tech mentioned that they are sending a "major" software upgrade out soon. In Virginia, it will be sent starting the end of this week through all of next week. She said it would mainly address the problem of not being able to pause live TV sometimes, but I'm hoping it will address the unreliable series recording problem too.

Hi bjems,
I'm on my second box and so far I haven't had any problems of scheduled recordings not being recorded. But I always check the scheduled recording list for each night because I just don't trust these boxes. And not just this box, but also my soon to be disconnected DirecTV HD Tivo! With my first box there were a couple of times that a scheduled recording did not record.
When you say Letterman did not record, do you know if that specific show was in the list of things to be recorded? If you set it up as a series and didn't check the scheduled list, it may not have been scheduled for one reason or another.
I had also spoken to tech support a couple of weeks ago and they acknowledged that there are some bugs on how series shows are put into the scheduled list, and that a new version of the software was being worked on but they never gave me a target date.
If its a "major" update, it find it hard to think that the main thing it will address is pausing during live TV when there have been many other bugs reported. Hopefully it will fix a bunch of them!!
Gerry
I can see 10 Letterman shows in my scheduled recordings list and I can see the red dot on the guide showing it's ready to be recorded, but sometimes it just doesn't record. I, too, hope this new update addresses the problem. Like Justin, I have found a way out of the problem when it won't pause live TV. But instead of hitting the "Live TV" button, I hit the "down arrow" button on the remote underneath the circular "OK" button. Probably has the same effect.

Thought I might elaborate on this...
The CSR probably misunderstood some memo. FiOS has a major upgrade to their DVR software tentatively planned for deployment to one or more markets in November, with other markets (incl. Virginia) to follow in early 2007. This upgrade isn't formerly announced, but it will feature significantly improved functionality. It may be the next major version of Microsoft Foundation Edition, or it may be a completely new interface from another vendor. Verizon won't provide further details at this time (nor do CSRs have such details). Expect a formal announcement this fall.
In the interim, we may see a minor update to the MSFE software in the near future. A minor update to the multiroom DVR application is likely as well.
Some have asked when multi-room DVR functionality will be added for HDTV. This is in the works, but isn't expected to come until after Verizon rolls out the new DVR software. Multiroom support for the QIP6200 and streaming HDTV around the house is tentatively planned for introduction in late 1Q 2007 or 2Q 2007.
Verizon is ordering multistream CableCards (M-Cards) for customers with the Tivo Series3, but they are on backorder and not expected to arrive before November. The multistream CableCard will be priced at the same level as the standard CableCard ($2.95/mo), or perhaps $1.00 more depending on Verizon's final cost. That said, FiOS expects that many customers will pass on the Series3 after they see the new DVR software unveiled towards the end of this year. Customers are advised to wait until they see this new software before buying a Series3.

Hi bfdtv,
WOW, that some significant and welcome news!! As a convert from DirecTV's HD Tivo, although it is VERY slow, the interface is much more polished and reliable than the FiOS DVR. I was toying with getting a Series 3, but the rumored cost is $800 which is WAY more than I'm willing to spend.
I am so far quite pleased with the FiOS TV service and the picture quality is much much better then DirecTV's. And while the FiOS DVR is certainly serviceable, a richer feature set along with better reliability would make the service even better!!
With out revealing any details, may we ask the source of your information?
Thanks,
Gerry

It has been mentiond on several Forums and news quotes from Verizon.

I got that information directly from the individual responsible for Verizon's FiOS service -- i.e. the very top. Everything above is from that phone conversation.

It is done via the STB IP address for there FIOS intranet.
That is why you must subscribe to the Verizon FIOS Home Network.

jason,
FiOS uses MoCA (networking over coax). You have all the set-top boxes connected with a feed of coax which runs from the ONT outside your home (or in your basement). The ONT is connected by a another line of coax to the Actiontec router. The Actiontec router assigns each computer, set-top box, and DVR on your network an IP address on your home network. You can see a screenshot of the Actiontec router's main screen here:

Absolutely phenominal SDTV clarity improvement, and the HDTV looks about the same...gorgeous.
The multi room function works great. I can access any SDTV recording from any box in the house, and watch it.
Also, I installed "Media Manager" on my PC and set up music and photo playlists, which allow me to pull them up on my TV that has the DVR on it. Works awesome as well.
Overall, I couldn't be more pleased. Better service, more channels, faster internet, more features...LOWER PRICE.

The multi-room unit only has one tuner capability correct? I've been contemplating switching to FiOs (already have phone and internet), but don't think it has the tuners or capacity I need. I currently have 2 Directivo units which supply me with 4 tuners. Due to conflicts there's no way I could have less than 2 (ability to record two things at the same time). Also, what's the capacity of that unit in terms of hours (SD)? One of my D*tivo's has 220 hours and the other has 170. I don't need that much space, but I need quite a bit especially because I have 5 episodes of about 10 different kids shows stored up just for the kids.
Is it possible to use 2 of the multi-room boxes? Can they be operated independently from the same remote?

The DVR is the /\/\otorola QIP-6416 STB, the other STB are the /\/\otorola QIP-25xx series.
Just like there DCT counterparts they only use 1 set of remote control cmds.
to use 2 or more in the same room, would require you to block one STB while you control the other.

All FiOS DVRs are dual-tuner HDTV DVRs. They will let you record one channel while watching another live; they will also let you record two different channels simultaneously.
Capacity is 160Gb, which will give you 100-140 hours of SD depending on the content, or 18-24 hours of HDTV, depending on the content.
Gerryex 09-02-06, 06:04 PM Gerry,
I got that information directly from the individual responsible for Verizon's FiOS service -- i.e. the very top. Everything above is from that phone conversation.
Hi bfdtv,
If you talk to that individual again, please remind him that no matter how many great features are in the new software they need to make sure that it all works reliably. Many internet posts show problems with the current software where a scheduled recording was not recorded and there are known problems on how a "series" that is set up for "new episodes only" also picks up several repeats of the same show.
The best features in the world are worthless unless the primary functions work correctly and all the time!!
Thanks for all of the great information!!!
Gerry
Gerryex,
That was the focus of the call.
I gave some examples of where the box didn't record correctly. They audited their system looking at those examples and concluded that the information they were getting from their programming provider was correctly fed into the system. If there were problems, he believed they were introduced by the Microsoft platform, either on the box or in the supporting software on their end. Unfortunately, he said there's nothing they can really do about that. He did expect those issues to be addressed with their DVR software overhaul coming to at least one market before the end of the year, with the rest to follow 1Q 2007.
Dreamcat 09-02-06, 10:08 PM bfdtv,
Did he give any indication as to which markets may get the software in November?
Thanks!
celticpride 09-03-06, 01:40 PM All i can say is that if that software is tivo i'll cancel my directv account sell my 3 hd tivos and switch to verizon! I really don't want to be forced to switch to directv's house branded hd dvr. i think directv has underestimated the POWER OF TIVO!!!
Olevia37HD 09-03-06, 02:03 PM I read it somewhere (may have been in this thread) about $19.99 more per month for a multi room DVR and $3.99 per box (I think that was the prices) to use it on. If I'm wrong I'm sure someone will tell me!!!!
I'm glad to see Verizon hasn't forgot how they started out!!! Maybe someone should remind them they need to kiss you first!!!!
Before spending $23.98 more a month, you may want to look in to this (http://www.surpluscomputers.com/store/main.aspx?p=ItemDetail&item=CES11068).

The problem with that unit is that it's RF only - the FIOS DVR does not have an RF output jack.
I also expected FIOS to provide the multiroom feature as a free add-on (or a minimal cost $1.99?)

The DVR service will cost $19.95 USD, plus an additional $3.95 USD per set-top box that would receive recorded content. In the future, Verizon plans to increase the number of available DVR boxes, as well as add support for copyrighted and home video content stored on networked PCs.
http://www.betanews.com/article/Verizon_Offering_FiOS_MultiRoom_DVR/1155579837
Customers using the multiroom DVR will pay $19.95 per month, plus $3.95 per month for each standard-definition set-top box that will be used to receive recorded video from the DVR.
http://news.com.com/Verizon+adds+multiroom+DVR/2100-1034_3-6105226.html
Customers will pay more for the service, McGregor notes, as Verizon charges $12.95 a month for standard DVR service and an addition $7 a month for the multi-room capability.
http://telephonyonline.com/fttp/marketing/Verizon_FiOS_analysis_081606/
Home Media DVR is $19.95 per month, only $7 more than the monthly fee for the FiOS TV DVR. Customers also need a $3.95-per-month standard-definition set-top box for each TV that will receive recorded video from the media hub.
http://www.ehomeupgrade.com/entry/2923/verizon_unveils_multi-room
This week Verizon FiOS subs get the ability to subscribe to a multi-room DVR with access to any show on up to three TVs at once. Using Motorola’s Home Media Hub doesn’t come cheap: the service will add $19.95 to the bill plus $3.95 for each standard set-top used to watch the video from the DVR, adding up to $31.80 for use with three TVs/set-tops. The hub concept doesn’t stop with recorded video. The service includes another feature called Media Manager for accessing personal media from PCs without setting up a home network. Cable operators are trialing multi-room DVRs.

Like I said Verzion is sticking to their roots!!!!
Stew4msu 09-03-06, 11:14 PM It's getting harder and harder for me to switch from D*.
I already have multi-room capabilities. I have 2 D*Tivo's hooked up in my living room. 4 tuners with almost 400 hours of capacity (SD). They're hooked up to a ChannelPlus video modulator that distributes the signal of the D*Tivo's to the other 6 TV's in the house (and the DVD player). Each room with a TV has it's own tivo remote that's been retrofitted for RF and you can control either D*Tivo from anywhere in the house. I guess this system has its flaws (mono sound - but we only need stereo for the living room and that's hooked up directly to the receiver, can only be watching 2 different things at once - that's never a problem for us), but it's hard to justify spending $40 per month ($20 + ($4 X 5)) on a system that I now have for free.
I don't currently have HD, but I will soon. Just don't know if HD is worth another $40 per month. Too many damn decisions.
Dreamcat 09-04-06, 12:27 AM I pay less all together through Fios than I did through Brighthouse, and I even get faster internet, more TV channels (with a better quality picture), and more features.
Sticking to their roots certainly isn't hurting, because it's a better deal than any other offer in my area.
davidahn 09-04-06, 02:30 AM What were the Motorola folks thinking when they put those tiny hard drives in the boxes. ...I asked them if they had a way to connect an external hard drive to the boxes. YES they said. I was specifically told by one of the people that I talked who had talked to her "GURU" that USB 2.0 support would allow me to connect an external USB hard drive to the 6416 and that would solve my space problems...
Has ANYONE tried a USB 2.0 HD with this thing? I'm gonna try, but I don't know what format the HD has to be in. I'd like a semi-decent sized movie library, but with 160GB, it's really killing my buzz. (I'm 90% full already with 11 movies!)
David
Unfortunately, drive expansion is not supported on the FiOS DVR.
Motorola does not have firmware to support storage of encrypted content on an external drive. FiOS engineering does not expect that to change this year, unfortunately. If/when Motorola does get around to supporting external HD storage, FiOS will add that capability.
Until then, your only real option for substantial capacity expansion is a Tivo Series3.
bfdtv,
Did he give any indication as to which markets may get the software in November?
No, he wouldn't say. However, there should be reviews of the new software up on the Internet in Nov/Dec, so you can decide based on that whether to keep their DVRs or upgrade to the Tivo Series3.

Talk about spining what I said!!!! I think you new what I said but maybe not. So I guess I'll spell it out!!!! :) I didn't say anything about the basic service from Fiso. Infact I believe the basic service is a good deal!!!
You don't find $3.95 a month excessive just to watch what you recorded in another room in your house? I sure Verizon is counting on people thinking just like you!!!! Also don't forget $19.95 just to rent the DVR.
So ($19.95 = $3.95 per tv) $23.90 per month = $286.80 a year. Thats for just for 2 tvs.
I thought cable was bad at $15 a month ($180 a year).
At those prices the system will be paid for in no time!!!!
You could get a
Terk Leapfrog (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=5433587&st=Wireless+Video&type=product&id=1051806327058)($106.99) a Wireless Multiroom Audio/Video Distribution System but Verizon doesn't need to kiss you first on the extras.
If Tivo Series3 ends up being $800. (again I read that somewhere) thanks but no thanks!!!
With these prices I'm glad I'm with Dish. :)
Dreamcat 09-04-06, 05:03 PM I'm not saying it doesn't add up to a good sized bill each month, lol.
Just that it adds up to about the same with other local cable companies too, so why not have (IMO) the best picture and features?
And it's $3.95 for a standard box on a TV...not an additional $3.95 just to have the "watch it in another room" feature. Brighthouse, Timewarner, Cox, etc...they all charge a small fee per box as well.

I agree get the best you can get. But I disagree with you on the $3.95 it will be the charge per set-top box that would receive recorded content.
No matter how they break that down it's a big rip-off. Between that and the over priced DVR.
Olevia,
If you get Dish Network or DirecTV, they charge you a $5 "outlet fee" for each additional TV, even when you own the box. On top of that, Dish Network charges another $5 per TV for DVR service. DVR service costs you $10 per additional TV on Dish Network.
With Verizon, they lease you a digital STB for additional TVs $3.95/mo. There is nothing to buy, there is no extra outlet or fee for accessing programs on the $19.95/mo multiroom DVR.
Dreamcat 09-04-06, 11:39 PM ^what he said :p
you pay only $3.95 per extra box, whether you use it to access DVR recordings or not
so, it can actually be cheaper than other companies additional TV outlet prices
now, about that DVR USB not being able to record encrypted content...let's hope Motorola gets that worked out as early as possible!
Olevia37HD 09-05-06, 12:35 AM Olevia,

I own my DVR 625 (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/products/receivers/dvr/index.shtml) and all I pay is $6 DVR fee. Which I can watch on as many tv as I want for guess how much........FREE!!! If I didn't own it, 6$ to rent it!!!!So that would be $12. Guess what it comes with a UHF remote. Then guess how much to watch it on other TVs in my house......... Come on.... FREE!!!!!!
So with Verizon its a great deal when they charge you $23.90 per month = $286.80 a year. Now lets see those for those that didn't understand them.
Dish $12 per month = $144 per year
Fios $23.90 per month = $286.80 a year
Wow... The difference is $142.80 a year
Like I said Verizon is sticking it to you on the extras!!!!
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 01:33 AM I don't want to own my DVR. I want to get a new one every few years from my cable company as they come out with new models.
And the one you mention you can rent for $12 a month total...it only records SDTV. We're talking about a dual tuner HDTV DVR in this thread...plus the awesome Media Manager feature that lets you stream music and photos from your PC to the TV. When talking about the price per year for your DVR625 service...You're not comparing apples to apples.
The closest from Dish is an HDTV DVR that goes for an average of $550 on ebay.
I don't want to pay hundreds of dollars all in one shot to own something I will replace anyway. It's easier for my budget to break it up over the years with a lease.
When you take the extra money I would pay up front to buy an HDTV DVR and divide that cost over the 3 or 4 years before I would want to buy a new one again into the extra $142.80 per year to Verizon and I can end up spending both more or less to lease, depending on my initial purchase price of a DVR. ($142.80 x 3 years = $428.40...x4 years = $571.20)
We absolutely can end up spending less by leasing instead of buying a new DVR every 3-4 years. And we could also end up spending around $100 more in that same period by leasing.
It's not a huge difference in the long run. So, it all comes down to preference, and the features that are most important to you.
For me, I want a better quality signal than satellite provides, as I am watching TV on a 100+ inch screen, and SDTV just doesn't cut it on satellite for me at that screen size. Having just gotten Fios (and having had Brighthouse and satellite on that size screen), I can tell you the SDTV quality diference is huge. And that is important for me.
So, if I end up spending $100 more than your total cost over 4 years to have that better quality and more features, well that's not a bad deal IMO. But, hey neither is your service for your situation.
For you, if you want to own the DVR and your SDTV quality is fine for your purposes, then great.
I'm not saying you are wrong, but that there's more than one way to look at it, depending on your buying cycle and other needs.
For those of us looking to lease them and upgrade without buying, then this is a great deal, feature-wise and price-wise.
davidahn 09-05-06, 01:49 AM Just to clarify, I just signed up with FiOS TV, and I'm pretty happy on balance. I had some sticker shock at first. The service prices are VERY reasonable ($39.95/mo premier pkg for 180 channels, $11.95/mo for the movie pkg, including Starz, Showtime, Encore, TMC, Flix and Sundance; and $24.95/mo for HBO + Cinemax, or $76.85 for EVERYTHING, HD package INCLUDED, locals INCLUDED.) DirecTV charges $99.99 for all this, plus $9.99 for the HD package. PLUS FiOS has the WB in HD, National Geographic HD, Wealth TV HD, MTV HD, CinemaxHD, StarzHD, and the Movie Channel HD. DirecTV doesn't. So I'm paying $33.15 less a month for 2 1/2 times the HD premium movie channels (5 vs 2), and significantly more HD content.
So why the sticker shock? The equipment lease fees. I own my own HD DirecTivo (HR10-250), so I only pay $6/mo for the DVR fees. Now I sign up for the Home Media Server for $19.95/mo, and an additional HD box for $9.95/mo, and I'm shelling out $30/mo for lease! Well, turns out this doesn't work anyway: the HMS only works with the SD set-top box. So I'm switching to 2 DVRs at $12.95/mo each, or $25.90/mo, or $19.90/mo more than DirecTV's $6/mo DVR fee. When I thought about it, it's still a LOT less than the $33.15 I'm saving on programming! Plus the 1080i programming is TRUE 1920x1080, not 1280x1080 like the DBS providers.
And to clarify, Olevia37HD, here's how FiOS TV's fees break down. $3.95/mo for the SD set-top box, $9.95/mo for the HD set-top box, $12.95/mo for the HD DVR, and $19.95/mo for the HD DVR with Home Media Server capability. So if you have a HMS + 2 STB's, that's $27.85/mo. The net difference between HMS and regular DVR is $7/mo, regardless of how many SD STB's you're using at $3.95/mo. Dish does have the edge in HD material over FiOS (I was really shocked by how much HD programming Dish has added since I left), but they still don't have the WB in HD (my wife LOVES the Gilmore Girls). Plus, despite all the money you claim to be saving, with Dish you're paying $99/mo for the HD Platinum, plus $5/mo for your locals. So Dish charges $12/mo for your HMS lease, vs. $24/mo for the FiOS, or $12 more a month, or $144 a year. But you're paying $104.99/mo for programming vs $76.85, a difference of $28.14/mo, or $337.68 a year. I think that covers the equipment lease disadvantage of $144 handily! Plus there's no up-front equipment purchases, you get true 1920x1080 vs. down-rezzed 1280x1080, and only 1 cable carries 2 streams of programming. My family room is impossible to wire for a 2nd coax cable, so I could only record 1 stream with my HR10-250, and my master bedroom could only be wired for a 2nd coax by running cable outside my house. It's HIDEOUS! I think I'm going to remove that external wiring and hook the FiOS up to my existing coax jack.
I only wish there were a way to increase the storage of these 6416's! ARRRGH! I guess the lesson in this is... you can't have it all.
David
^^^^Not what he said.
I own my DVR 625 and all I pay is $6 DVR fee.
The Dish Network outlet fee only applies to boxes after the first. If you just have one box, you don't pay the extra $5/mo. Works like this on Dish Network:
1st DVR: $5/mo DVR fee
2nd DVR: $5/mo DVR fee + $5/mo outlet fee
3rd DVR: $5/mo DVR fee + $5/mo outlet fee
You mentioned a UHF remote. There's nothing stopping you from buying a universal remote with RF(UHF) and distributing the video from a single Verizon HDTV DVR around your house. However, if you do that, you won't be able to watch different channels on separate TVs at the same time.
The Verizon FiOS approach lets you watch different channels on every TV at the same time. In addition, it lets you access the SD recordings on the DVR from any set-top box in your home, without affecting what others in your household are watching on TV.
Olevia37HD 09-05-06, 05:34 AM You may want to read up on a ViP 622, also don't forget who has the most HDTV!!!
Go head think about it............. DISH!!!! :)
ViP 622 = HDTV (2 set) PVR Dish IRD (http://reviews.digitaltrends.com/review3553.html)
Well let me tell you some real numbers.
Let me say thanks to JohnL at dbstalk.com for this info:
"If you purchase the Vip622 then no lease fee, but the purchase price is $499, thats alot of Months of lease payments (years in fact at $6.00). Dish has a rebate program for all NEW HD lease subs, a totally new Dish sub gets $20 off programing fees for 10 months, Current Dish Subs new to HD Metal Package gets $10.00 for 10 months off their programing package.
If you subscribe to the Platinum HD Package NO DVR fee.
John"
Or you can read about at Dish (http://www.dishnetwork.com/content/programming/dishhd/offer/index.shtml).
I also know they have a $49.99 Activation Fee. If you commit to 18 months they give it back on your first bill.
Also I found this (@ dbstalk.com) one on ebay. Brand New ViP 622 for $419 with shipping(Item number: 290024401618). By the way the rebate is for any HD programing stating @ $29.99.
Lets look at just the DVR total cost for 2 tvs.
To start Rent (lease) Vip 622 (2 TVS):
$199.99 + $49.99 = $249.98 lease start up fees.
If you buy $499
Plus $6 if you rent fee and $6 DVR fee.
You did say 3 or 4 years.
Remember we started this over the cost of the DVR!!!
When you take the extra money I would pay up front to buy an HDTV DVR and divide that cost over the 3 or 4 years before I would want to buy a new one again into the extra $142.80 per year to Verizon and I can end up spending both more or less to lease, depending on my initial purchase price of a DVR. ($142.80 x 3 years = $428.40...x4 years = $571.20)
Lets take a lease from dish for 4 years:
($6 Lease + $6 DVR per month fee for a year) = $144. x 4years =$576
$249.98 (start up fees) +$576(^fees) = $825.98 ($17.21 per month)
Fios 2 tvs:
($23.90 per month) $286.80 a year x 4years = $1147.20 (OMFG)
(First TV)$19.95 + $3.95 per tv) $23.90 (2 TVs)per month = $286.80 a year x 4 years. =(OMFG) $1147.20:eek:
If you buy one from dish:
Cost of 622 = $499.
$499. + (No Lease fee) $72(DVR Fee for a year$6 x $12) x4years) =$787 (16.39).
Remember thats just money you pay other then programing!!!!
The dish prices I gave you are before rebate ($20 per month for 10 months) and no DVR fee on the highest programing packing.
4 year prices just on DVR and fees:
Fios = $1147.20 (OMFG)
Dish Rent = $825.98 - $200 = 625.98
Dish own = $787 - $200 = $587
Tell me how Verzion is not sticky it to you on the cost of the extras?
Fios is a good when you don't get extras!!!!
So don't forget to tell Verzion they should kiss you first!!!
I am not a sales person and I don't work for either company. Thank God!!!

Sounds like FIOS is not for you. I got FIOS for two reasons, more HD and the best HD/SD picture quality. I'm a picture quality nut and that's probably the most important rationale for me. Long term I see greater potential for additional HD on FIOS as opposed to satellite. Each person weighs the pros & cons.
mikeford 09-05-06, 02:37 PM Argue about whats best or cheapest, or best value or whatever a year from now when all the providers are more seriously duking it out and competition is real.
FIOS is where the bandwidth is, and that is going to be the main difference once the early adopter dust settles. Dish already has bandwidth issues and the number of HD signals will be increasing, so I expect them to offer the lowest prices to match the lowest quality.
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 03:01 PM I'm only comparing non-satellite cable prices when I make my decision on what to get, as satellite does not have the picture quality I need.
Plus, I have friends with Dish. I'm in Florida. Lots of thunder storms. They get signal loss a lot more than I could deal with.
When you look at my remaining options when not including satellite, I got the best deal I could.
Like Mr. Ross said. Each person weighs the pros & cons.
Then you go with the best deal for your particular needs and desires. Fios isn't for you, but it is for others. There's really nothing else to it.

Subtract $10/mo if you want 5Mbps service instead of 15Mbps.
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 04:39 PM Olevia37HD, you keep ignoring that we choose better quality as opposed to absolute lowest price.
If you want to have Dish, then have Dish.
Telling a thread of people who want to use Fios that they shouldn't get the extras isn't going to change anyone's mind. We've done our research and chosen what is best for our personal needs. Not for yours.
I don't think anyone is saying you are getting a bad price. Just that we don't find our price bad for what we get. If you do, then don't get it.
Simple as that.
Olevia37HD 09-05-06, 04:47 PM Here's my FiOS bill for 15Mbps/2Mbs Internet, one HDTV DVR, and one STB with ~20 HDTV channels. You can compare it to your Dish + Internet bill.
Subtract $10/mo if you want 5Mbps service instead of 15Mbps.
"You're not comparing apples to apples."
I'll remind you guys again....... multi-room DVR FEES (equipment and service fees)
Fios = $1147.20 (OMFG) just for equipment and service fees!!!!!
This would be a good place to start selling BluRay players!!!
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 04:59 PM "Standard Receiver Rental Aug 4 $3.95"
It does show his fee. He is comparing "apples to apples".

There's no spin. The facts are clearly stated. It's a difference of opinion on priorities when choosing a service.
And I think bfdtv has a good point, and really the best way to compare things. Because no matter what the fees are individually, it's the total monthly cost that matters.
Look at his TOTAL COST per month for TV and internet. $101.96
How different from that is your total internet and TV monthly cost?
Because no matter what the fees are individually, it's the total monthly cost that matters. Exactly.
Actually, he should be comparing $91.96, which is the price with 5Mbps (2Mbps upstream) service.

But wait, just tell me how much is the multi-room DVR Fee's for a total of 2 tvs?
Then tell me the cost for 4 years?
Remember you made a big thing about how much you save.
EXTRAS!!! It's old news that Verzion has always been a company that sticks you on them!!!
Dreamcat do you work Verzion or Fios?
Just wondering.
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 05:45 PM 1. No I don't work for them...I used to dislike Verizon quite a bit actually.
2. You're getting a bit ridiculous by repeating the same things and ignoring the rest.
3. Compare your total monthly cost. That's the bottom line, all important factor.

I pay less all together through Fios than I did through Brighthouse, and I even get faster internet, more TV channels (with a better quality picture), and more features.
Sticking to their roots certainly isn't hurting, because it's a better deal than any other offer in my area.
I never said the basic Fios wasn't a good deal. What I said was they stick you on the extras and you said "I'm not saying you are wrong"
Remember you post with how it is cheaper?
Well its not on the Extras is it?
I don't want to own my DVR.
Is it a $100 or a lot more?
So look at the number and see how they are sticking to their roots.
Dreamcat 09-05-06, 06:22 PM Anyone else see this person ignoring the total cost question over and over again? lol
I'm not going to keep going back and forth with you on something you refuse to discuss in full. You just want to say the extras cost more than yours. That doesn't matter. It matters what the total is.
If they charged $1 for basic service and $100 for the extras, it would still be $101 per month. Which is all that matters.
Compare your total internet and TV. Nothing else to discuss besides that at this point.
The end.

Ken Ross 09-05-06, 07:07 PM I bet you like BluRay too!!!One word potential, but I don't want to pay for it!!!

Fios = $1147.20 (OMFG) just for equipment and service fees!!!!!
You seem to miss the point. For me and many others FIOS is a great deal because of the picture quality and the HD channel offerings. Why do you insist on generalizing based on YOUR needs or issues?
jason2006 09-05-06, 07:26 PM [QUOTE=bfdtv]jason,
FiOS uses MoCA (networking over coax).
Thanks bfdtv
It's clearer now for me
I still however have a last question
The Router is connected to the ONT (through Coax)
The DVR and Set-top Boxes are connected to the ONT as well ( through Coax)
Does the ONT act as hub ?
how does the Router communicate with the DVR ot the set-top box ?
Thanks for yor help
Does the ONT act as hub ?
how does the Router communicate with the DVR ot the set-top box ?As you saw in the screenshot (http://mysite.verizon.net/~fiosdvr/images/actiontec.gif) I linked above, all STBs, DVRs, and PCs/Macs are assigned IP addresses on your home network by the Actiontec router.
I suppose the ONT does act as a hub, in the sense that the IPTV and guide data requests from the STB/DVR traverse the coax to the ONT, and then move from the ONT to Actiontec router over coax. The VOD/PPV and guide data is then retrieved using the ethernet connection (the Actiontec router is also connected to the ONT via a separate ethernet cable).
fmtrojan 09-05-06, 08:21 PM Had my box swapped out--wish I could have swapped out the tech.
Tech that came over was brutally unenthused about my picture quality issues. (In addition to some SD channels looks like I was watching an old VHS tape, I recently experienced Signal dropouts on NFL channel HD and pixellation on ESPN SD. And for some reason, I think my overall HD is actually looking worse.) The other thing I noticed--and worried me because I may just get the Tivo S3--was that PQ on the cablecard seemed worse than the dvr box.
The tech seemed to only think I was having DVR issues, so when he goes to check my picture quality, before even looking at the channels, he says "Once you start watching HD, the rest looks bad." So right them I'm thinking this isn't going to go well. He does some diagnostic checks and then offers to swap out the hd/dvr. I did my own diagnostic test (power moto box off and hit "OK", scroll down) and found:
Inbound: 35.4 Signal to Noise Ratio (good) and 76% Automatic Gain Control (fair) for both tuners approximately, with no 5 second errors. I tested across various channels and the results didn't vary.
Outbound: 17.7-20.3 SNR (fair to just barely good)
Could those with no PQ issues (and those with PQ issues) post their stats for comparison?
Olevia37HD 09-05-06, 11:45 PM Thanks guys, I've learned alot and its been fun.

inbound SNR is 37.7 (good)
inbound AGC is 61% (good)
outbound SNR is 19.5-21.7 (fair to good)
outbound AGC is 17% (good)

Dreamcat 09-06-06, 02:30 AM And you never said the right price for multi-room DVR.

Pay attention man, it was said over and over. $19.95 per month for the DVR with multi-room functions. $3.95 per month for each standard box, with or without it watching recorded info from the DVR.
The copy of a Fios bill that was posted shows it to you all broken down, real simple. You just won't acknowledge it or you don't understand it. I'm not sure how many times that info needs to be posted before you get it.
Bottom line is everyone has answered your questions.
You ignore half the answer that's given...for example- the standard boxes are $3.95 per month no matter whether you have a DVR or not...it's no extra on top of that to use them to watch DVR recordings.
And you won't answer our question of what you pay for TV and internet all together.
You're running in circles with the same statements, but won't come up with the end-all, be-all proof of your statements. Your total TV and internet price.
If you're just playing games, then just leave the thread. If you actually want to make the conversation worth anyone's time, then please tell us your total TV and internet price.
Thanks.
mikeford 09-06-06, 04:24 AM I pay about $115 monthly for my combined TW cable/internet access with a DVR and two of the cheesy $5 extra channel groups, and I plan to jump to FiOS about 3 minutes after its available in my area. I don't care much for Verizon, I am dumping them in the next day or so and switching to Tmobile for my cell, but I am more than ready to dump TimeWarner.
Blueray etc has little appeal to me, not yet anyway. Chances are good both current formats will be consumer flops and something else will come along soon enough.
I am not following how your FiOS connection for your home network is setup. I have a cable modem that goes to a Linksys WiFi router and a WELL populated home network of various ages and types of computers, but I only have to pay TW for the single connection that is made directly from the cable modem to my Linksys router, which assigns local IP addresses and does NAT via the single IP address assigned to it from the cable modem.
davidahn 09-06-06, 05:42 AM Guys, even forgetting the cost of the internet and just looking at the cost of programming plus equipment lease fees, Olevia is ignoring the $33/mo difference in programming costs in favor of FiOS and harping on the $12/mo advantage of Dish in equipment lease fees. He's paying $21/mo MORE TOTAL a month than equivalent FiOS TV programming + lease, and telling us WE'RE getting screwed. A little sad that he conveniently ignores MAJOR facts just to justify his investment in his DVR box, don't you think? And to top it all off, HE'S the one with the smug, sarcastic "I've learned a lot" comment!
Besides paying $21 less a month TOTAL, I'm getting 50% more pixels on 1080i material (1920x1080 vs 1280x1080). Denial ain't just a river in Egypt, Olevia!
David

Ignore this.... Fios is more of a rip on extras then cable is.
But Dreamcat said that is not true.
Just to clarify, I just signed up with FiOS TV, and I'm pretty happy on balance. I had some sticker shock at first.
DavidTalk about sticker shock!!!!
$27.85/mo x 12/mo = $334. x 4years = $1336.8
Now thats just for equipment and DVR sevice, thats doesn't cover programing!!!!
If I was to up-graded to Dish HD TV that would be half my bill, with all the fees!!!
Don't forget who has the most HD programing!!!!
Is that a tax write off? Does she (Verizon) at least call the next day?  Is she a smoker? :D
David does your wife know how much you pay? :D

But for the average person they are looking for the best deal they can get. So the number one reason they change companys is due to excessive fee.
Andrew_J_M 09-06-06, 12:03 PM This is my D* set up - equipment is an HD Tivo and SD DVR in my theater, 1 more SD DVR in the den and an HD receiver in the spare bedroom, Total Choice Premier and the HD package. Total cost is $128.24 broken down as follows;
Current Charges for Service Period 08/08/06 - 09/07/06
08/08 09/07 TOTAL CHOICE PREMIER Monthly 96.99
08/08 09/07 DIRECTV Protection Plan Monthly 5.99
08/08 09/07 HD Package Monthly 9.99
08/08 09/07 Network: FOX HD Monthly 0.00
08/08 09/07 DIRECTV DVR Service Fee at no cost with Premier 0.00
Fees
08/09 Additional Receiver 4.99
08/09 Additional Receiver 4.99
08/09 Additional Receiver 4.99
Sales Tax 0.30
It looks like FIOS would be much cheaper - especially as I would change from Verizon DSL for internet too, if I can without getting a penalty.
BUT - I won't be able to have 2 DVRs in the Theater as the remotes would work both DVRs together.
So my thinking would be to have 1 x DVR + 1 x receiver in the Theater (assuming that I won't have remote conflicts), 1 x DVR in the den and another receiver in the spare bedroom. Using multi-room I should be able to access recordings on the den DVR from the Theater - making sure that I only record SD in the den, as I don't have an HD TV in the den.
From information given in this thread I think this would cost approximately $82, saving me about $46 a month.
Anyone see anything wrong with my logic?

Did include the cost of the ($19.95) Multi-room DVR?
You do know that would be an EXTRA?
Andrew_J_M 09-06-06, 12:45 PM Yes it does include the $12.95 for the DVR + $7.00 for the multi-room option.
Olevia, you seem to be somewhat confused. The multi-room DVR is no different from the standard $12.95 DVR - but there is an extra $7.00 charge to activate the extra functionality.

Ken Ross 09-06-06, 01:26 PM folks, just ignore Olevia37HD, who has been thread-crapping the NY NY Cablevision thread for a while as well......
It's pretty obvious by now this guy is a troll. I think ignoring him is indeed the way to go.
fmtrojan 09-06-06, 02:00 PM I noted earlier that my minor PQ issues were worse on my cablecard than my hd/dvr.
FWIW, my Cablecard diagnostics were: 36 SNR, 40% AGC. So about the same signal to noise ratio, but lower automatic gain control...but worse overall picture across all channels. I have a Sony KDF-E42A10 (rear projection lcd).
The new box seems to work. But I haven't put it to that much work.
Btw, just leave the internet troll alone and let him think he's getting a better deal and better service.
