If anyone has any suggestions for minor changes to the FiOS DVR software (beyond the obvious) to improve usability, feel free to note them in this thread.

FiOS is putting the finishing touches on the new software and is open to feedback.

When using the serach function, do not list shows for past time periods. If you want to find a show in progress, then add an in progress function to the search.

I recently added "Port Savers" to my Sony projector and FIOS DVR. The trouble I am having is the picture is very jumpy (for lack of a better word). Anyone else ever ran into this problem? I removed them and it seems to work fine now.I got into a wierd state of 'jumpy' HD video the other night. Connected via HDMI->DVI directly to a Sony 34XBR800.

Audio seemed fine, but the HD video (for both 1080i and 720p sources) ... Yah, "jumpy" would be the best way to describe it ... almost like it was dropping the (occasional) frame.

Rebooted ... problem went away and hasn't come back.

I also had a wierd 'strobing' / vertical light bar scrolling horizontally accross the screen effect one night. This was a known issue with the 34XBR800 and certain hardware ... so I was a bit worried.

But again ... rebooted ... problem went away and hasn't come back.

Pressing info during a program brings up half of the info... show the rest by pressing info again (instead of, or in addition to, arrowing over to the "More Info" button.)

Swap Tuner and 30 minute buffer per tuner, so we can watch 2 programs at the same time.

Fewer generic program descriptions. Many times I see a canned description on FiOS, but details (guests, etc.) on the Comcast listing.

I'll second the scroll back to earlier shows on the guide... and gray them out, just like ReplayTV. For the same reasons that dt_dc mentioned.

Time line on 30-second skip! :) It's nice to know where you are in the show, you can sometimes guess the number of consecutive commercials depending on the time.

I've seen mention that I can set the output resolution on the 6416DVR (default is 1080i?). I was hoping to play around with it a bit but can't find it anywhere in the menu. Is there some special way to access a setup menu on the unit? I apologize if the answer to my question is already in this thread - my searches didn't turn anything up.

Turn the DVR off and hit the menu button to bring up the settings menu.

I posted this in another thread but got no replies. Has anyone found a way to get around the issues of having 2 DVRs in the same room and using the remote. I leave one off and the other on and use the power to toggle back and forth to watch each one, but when I hit the menu button for the one I am watching it goes to the settings menu on the off unit. I have accidentially changed some settings before. I really wish they had seperate remote codes.

Yes, you did get replies in the other thread. Here's one of them:

The FioS DVR thread has a few suggestions.

(One is to put the two units at right angles and use a remote extender to control the one that isn't visible from the front. We put the whole second unit in another part of the room... a few feet to my left... and run long Component & Audio cables to the TV.)

I would be nice when you go to a series in the DVR recordings that is shows the episodes names instead of the series name for each recording.

It would be nice if the DVR would record what is in the scheduled list and if it is not going to record the show that it does not show up in the scheduled list.

It would be nice if the guide information was accurate.

I would be nice if it would only record new shows when I tell it to.

It would be nice when I tell it to record new shows and it can't record the first run that it picks up the subsequent showing (even though it shows it as a repeat).

It would be nice if the box gave some kind of indication when a button was pressed and the user should wait. TiVo box gives a sound effect and a time clock to let the user know that the button press was received and the box is working.

In general it would be nice if the box actually worked and I did not have to constantly manage the recordings myself.

To define why FiOS TV is different than cable TV to the end user.

As a plus it would be nice to watch downloaded video on the box. And as a double plus: to have a built in RSS feed reader to download the vidcast automatically (I want to watch Diggnation on my TV easily). Maybe a plus to FiOS TV and Internet subscibers (TW has a similar thing).

A couple more:

Provide an option (in setup maybe) to display multiple episodes separately (in chronological order.)

The ability to start recording a pgm late... e.g. to offset the games that run over on Sunday.

when scrolling through the guide and you press info, and then press info to get back to the guide, don't reposition the guide so that the show that you just got info for is in the upper left top.

Improve the way it records back-to-back shows on the same channel. It appears that it currently requires both tuners to handle the "overlap" between the shows even though they're on the same channel.

I second, Dish did a good job of this.

Here's one that has nothing to do with programming, but it's definitely simple: Provide a way to officially inform your customers what's happening with respect to these software updates. Specifically, it would be nice to hear directly from Verizon when new updates to the STB's are being rolled-out so we know to look for the enhancements, and for a list of what the enhancements are. It could be as simple as a posting on a Verizon web site. Software companies do this all the time by providing a "what's new in this release" read-me file that shows the new features, bugs that have been fixed, and known bugs that are still being worked on.

Now I'm getting greedy: Ideally, Verizon would have official representation on this forum. With all due respect to "bfdtv," how do we know that any of our suggestions are actually being seen by anyone at Verizon who has any connection whatsoever with the programming?

This would be helpful for much more than just the STB upgrades: I've seen wild speculation on this and other forums about all sorts of stuff, like a 6-tuner STB, new remotes, the multi-room DVR (before it was released), and others. And I know there are some Verizon employees here that have been very helpful to the extent that THEY are informed by the powers-that-be at Verizon, but the rumor mill only leads to disappointment and frustration.

I think if Verizon REALLY wants to distinguish itself from the competition and show that they're leveraging the latest technologies, engaging the Internet community would be a HUGE step in the right direction.

Knock, knock....is anyone there? Hello? Verizon? Anyone listening?

I'll step off my soap box now.

This software update is planned for Q1 2007 delivery in most markets, so it is still some months off. A limited test deployment was previously planned in one or two markets before the end of the year, but I have not inquired as to whether that is still the case.

Now I'm getting greedy: Ideally, Verizon would have official representation on this forum. When did this problem start?

Hi bfdtv,

Its been at least a week or more as I first noticed it when watching a show recorded on the DVR from last week. Several of my neighbors also have FiOS and I checked with them to the left and right of me and even a friend in the same housing sub-division but in some townhouses in a different area, and they all have the same thing. Also it does it both on the DVR and my CableCard when tuning directly with my TV.

I called tech support and initially they escalated the problem to a higher level but now they want to send a tech out to make some measurements at my house. I said OK, but being the semi-retired electrical engineer that I am I can't see what they'll accomplish by making measurements. Its all digital data and either the level is good and I get all the channels or it not good and some or all of the channels come in poorly or not at all.

What I'm seeing and hearing is good (for SD) video, and good sound, but just all coming from the right and very little from the left.

I would assume that at the very least its affecting the whole Tampa area or possible the full national FiOS network!!

Thanks,
Gerry

Thanks, I wasn't aware of that link. I submitted the survey, but frankly this is the kind of "one-way" communication I'm talking about.

The optimist in me hopes that this feedback goes to someone who thoughtfully reviews it and uses it to improve the service. On the other hand, my inner cynic wonders if this might be nothing more than a PR ploy to give people a warm fuzzy feeling, and the responses wind up in the bit-bucket.

I have seen example after example of forums where the vendor/manufacturer has a presence and provides feedback and answers to their customers. The good-will it generates is amazing, and it truly gives customers the feeling that they are heard.

I know it's probably a pipe-dream that this would actually happen, but I'm more of an optimist than a cynic, so I can hope, right? ;)

I hate that we're forced to watch and listen to the running tutorial that plays while you're browsing through the VOD selections. It would be much better, IMHO, to show live TV (or nothing at all) while you're browsing through the selections, and make the tutorial available under "help."

BTW, Verizon also recently started a blog:
http://poliblog.verizon.com

Now, it's mainly aimed at "policy" issues. However ... some of the posts involve Fios TV. For example, "Consumers Want Fewer Wires":
http://poliblog.verizon.com/PoliBlog/Blogs/poliblog/CZBlogger1/134/Consumers-Want-Fewer-Wires-amp-More-Video-Choice-.aspx

Which, heck, seems like a pretty good invitation to leave a post / comment about anything else you want ...

Also, the people involved in poliplog are the same marketing / external communications people that would have to be involved in any type of "official" external communications at a company like Verizon. For example, the author of the above post is "Executive Director - External Communications". Sounds like a good person to share your ideas with.

I don't believe it's possible to eliminate the one minute "padding". I don't really mind that as the networks' clocks don't always seem to be synchronized, so this provides a safety net.

However, I don't like the way it handles the back-to-back recording. I just tested it and it appears to record that extra one minute on only one of the two recordings so you lose the benefit of having that overlap.

I've experienced a situation where I was recording two shows back-to-back, and the first show ran into that one minute of overlap, so the end of that recording was cut off. Fortunately the end of the first show was recorded at the beginning of the second show, but that meant I didn't have a "complete" recording of the first show.

I'll be happy if the DVR allows you to simultaneously record and playback the same program delayed. Today, I started recording the Patriots/Jets game, and started watching about a half hour later.

During playback, I paused the game several times and used the fast forward to get through the commercials. Typical stuff for a DVR.

In the fourth quarter, the DVR stopped recording for about 10 minutes. When I got to the spot where the DVR stopped recording, it froze. I was able to fast forward, but it took me from the hung spot directly to LIVE, where I missed the most of the action.

Is this a known issue? (If it matters, I’m in the Boston area). While my DirecTivo never had an issue like this, I can’t justify spending the money on a Series 3 TIVO.

Is this a known issue? No, AFAIK it's not a common / known issue ... especially not specific to delayed play-back of a recording in progress.

I happily watch shows while they are being recorded all the time ... especially / including football games. Works great.

However twice I have had a wierd / lost / frozen segment in the middle of a recording. In both cases I was watching long after the fact ... in one case FF ended up taking me all the way to the end of the show. In the other, FF took me about 3/4 through. I suspect, if I had been watching live, the behavior would have been like you described.

In both my cases, it was the same PBS channel (WETA 26 in DC) and it was two programs I didn't really care much about (This Old House and one of the kids shows we record) ... and it's only happened twice so far ... so ... it didn't really didn't bug me that much.

I've had this issue once while watching a Dallas Stars game. Exactly same scenerio except after it froze there was about a 2 -3 minute gap before it jumped to live. I missed one of the two goals!! I have only seen this the one time but can't really say how many times I watch a program while recording it and fast forward through commericals.

It was a loss of digital signal.

With Analog, when you lose a signal you get static or a weak snowy signal.

With Digital, the signal is there, or not there. No Grey area. If it loses the signal it goes blank.

Thanks to bfdtv for waking this thread up again. I am hoping that North Texas is one of the test areas for the new software, as I am eager to see what they have done. I am very disappointed in the multi-room DVR offering, as my eye was on the 6-receiver model with 500GB of disk space.

However, just turning on the SATA port would sell me on either the QIP or HD-TiVo. Whoever does this first will likely get my business. (I guess FiOS gets my business in either case, less a few dollars for one less DVR. Hmm)

Got home from a short business trip, was all ready to plop down and watch recorded shows from South Park, Earl, and The Office... went to the recorded TV menu and saw about 10 listings for each show! Upon further investigation I saw each recording was bout 2 - 3 mins in length, then a gap of a minuter or two.. and on and on. Menu said partial show was recorded due to box malfunction or pwr outage.. at that time the box then turned off by itself. Narrowed it down right off the bat as malfunction! LOL

Got Verizon tech on phone.. tried to reset box and ended up saying it was fried.

Tech was out this morning, replaced box.. said some type of conflict between Motorolla and Verizon updates.. duh?! LOL

Oh well.. seems to be working for now.

Just curious.. do most here leave the box on? Tech on phone last night said if programs overlap when recording the box seems to work best when turned off. Tech that was out here today said leave it on so it can download updates 24/7. Hmmm..

Also.. why oh why do some 4:3 shows on my 16:9 tv have black bars.. and some have grey? My TV is set to show everything black.. but some still show up grey? My DTV was always black. Grey looks like crap!

I don't think that "tech" knew what he was taking about. When you turn the box "off" it isn't really off, it is just idle and doesn't output. It is still on, can still record shows and also can download updates.

As a matter of fact, my experience is that they boxes don't d/l guide data unless they are "off". I would expect it is the same with the updates.

So, no, I turn mine "off" when I am not watching TV and I still get my updated guide, recordings and all the updates.

D-Link updates are few & far between. If you're not having problems with your data connection, and the router isn't locking up or rebooting, I wouldn't update. I''ve had updates make things worse.
The extra box is your NIM... an interface between the Ethernet network & your MOCA (coax) network. Your STBs "talk" back to the head end over your data connection... the NIM is the bridge that allows that to happen.

According to Verizon here on Long Island and the Syracuse Tech Support Center.
When Verizon Techs come to your house for a service call they automatically replace you D-Link router and External NIM with an Actiontech router with a built in NIM
Supposedly The D-link does not handle Verizon Software updates as well as the Actiontech.

The ActionTec has been around for a while now. After the first month or two, there were reportedly some problems and they went back to using separate NIMs. In our case, we got the ActionTec AND a NIM... no coax connection to the ActionTec. I would have preferred to keep the D-Link. Supposedly it's been fixed with an upgrade to the router.

There is a lot of information here that is helpful to both the consumer and the provider, yet most will not take the time to sift through 700+ posts to find the 20 posts that are relevant to their issue.
Not sure I follow... looking back through the last few pages, it appears that just about all posts are related to the forum title... FiOS DVR. What topic are you referring to?

Got the Motorola 6416 installed with my FIOS TV this week, and am having an annoying problem with the AT8550 Remote. The replay, list, and live buttons do not work. I programmed the remote using both Motorola codes as specified in the manual, and get the same results with both. What could be going wrong?

I have 3 of the AT8550 remotes with my FIOS install and they all work the same (replay, list and live buttons do not work). I'm hoping I can bug Verizon to replace these with the Motorola remotes later on. I find the AT8550 to be poor in layout and function - plus the unused buttons does nothing but confuse my wife.

My point is that the forum title is too broad. There are many subjects going on here. It would be more useful if they were separated. Oh well... looking through some of the other treads throughout the avsforum, it seems that's the way it works here.

Some functionality suggestions for the DVR...
(sorry if there are some repeats and sorry some of these might not be minor)

1. Remove the 2 minute buffer and make it optional. I really hate this. My recording of Heroes gets cut off, so I have to watch the beginning of Studio 60 in order to see the end. If I ever watch the recording of Studio 60 first and delete it... I just lost the ending of the previous show! It already has the ability to add 5, 10, etc minutes so just plunk the 2 minute option in there.
2. Display the time when playing a show (not "PLA")... or make it an option.
3. Series recordings should default to record "NEW ONLY". I don't understand why the default is "New and Rerun". Who wants to record reruns?
4. Put the aspect ratio options inside the application (not accessed from a boot menu). Also add a Panoramic option so if it gets stretched, it's not too bad.
5. All menus should wrap vertically. I shouldn't have to press down 3 times to get to the bottom "LAST" option. Just press up once to loop back to the bottom.
6. Fix the pop up prompts telling me I need to change the channel when I'm already on a channel that is currently recording and will continue to record the next hour.
7. When 2 shows are recording at the same time and I press channel UP or DOWN, give the option to switch to the other recording (instead of just giving the option to cancel the current recording).
8. Put a bigger processor in the DVR. =) This thing lags/locks up way too much.

Thanks

Has anyone had trouble with sound loss on the HD channels? I get sound blips 4-5 times an hour during prime-time. These sound blips occur live and on recordings. They happen on both my HD DVR's (both have receivers using optical connection). I had Verizon come out and check signal strength, etc and they can't find anything wrong.
I recall having this problem with my previous service (Brighthouse). So the current theory is that it's a problem at the satellite source.

Thanks

Amen! Excellent suggestions, I agree with every one. Even though we do record reruns (not enough space to record everyall shows every night, even with 2 DVRs.. so we defer CSI, L&O and the Fox shows until re-run season...), I agree the default should be new shows only.
And what is the purpose of starting record a minute early, is that so the clock doesn't have to be kept accurate??

With TiVo you would tell it "First runs only" and it would record a "repeat" if it was not able to record the first run. It worked great on cable shows where they have a new show then 3 hours later run it again. I miss it so much.

Hopefully you passed this on to verizon... here's a few I've already sent.

On 4:3 programs shown on my widescreen... give me the option to force all sidebars to be black. Even though I have the option on my tv set to that, for some reason some show up grey?! This was never the case with DTV.

How about an option to dim the display on the box? Damn that thing is bright at 3 a.m.?!

And similar to what you mentioned.. if I'm watching one show, and a show is set to record on another channel. Don't pop a menu asking me to change channel or cancel the recording. Just record the dang show and let me keep watching what I want to. I believe even if you cancel recording it still records though.. glitch?

This goes without saying.. bigger hard drive! aka.. make the firewire ports works, usb, ethernet, etc so I can connect an external drive.

And of course, last but not least.. make sure the dang box works. I'm on my second DVR.

Excellent sugestions! I also would expand on a few, and add a few of my own:

3. Series recordings should default to record "NEW ONLY". I don't understand why the default is "New and Rerun". Who wants to record reruns?

YES! Actually, a "default settings" setup would be nice... so the user can decide what defaults are set. I also always have to change it to record "anytime" incase the show changes time slot.

4. Put the aspect ratio options inside the application (not accessed from a boot menu). Also add a Panoramic option so if it gets stretched, it's not too bad.

And allow for pass thru mode... if the networks sends shows at 720p I want my tv to be in 720p mode. Actually, 720p is better than 1080i, but most people don't even realize this.

Some additional:

1. Allow external SATA drives to be supported. 160gb is way to small for HD-DVR.

2. While a show that ends at 9:03 and another show starts a 9:00 are conflicts, I still wan't the machine to record the other show even if I loose 3 minutes of it. Many times the first three minutes or so are "last week on xxxx" anyway. In otherwords don't let the networks trying to defeat DVR's with these offset times defeat you... you must win!

3. That feature people talk about where is a show is run multiple times, and the first is missed, record the next showing. The would be great for shows on SCI-FI where usually there is a conflict with other shows. The DVR should see that the show is available at another time and record it then instead. Right now I have to force this to record SCI-FI shows at the later time.

4. Fix the recording of reshows of a new show when they are not market "repeat"... See Daily Show and Colbert Report.

5. Performance optimization... the UI is very slow... If I shipped software with performance like that my customers wouldn't be happy. Heck, you have 1 platform to test on... you know what the performance will be on 100% of the units.

hey guys, I have been a customer of Verizon Fios for about months now, and i love it, its great. The signal is awesome, and HD is AMAZING!!! But unfortunately, all of the space that i have on my Motorola QIP6416-2 Box, is filled up, and i cannot record anymore without deleting shows. I was wondering if there was anyway to get the media that i have on the box now, over to my computer? Is this possible? i have a PC and a Mac, so if there is a solution for either platform, i will definitely use it. Anyone have any ideas about how to get media off the box on to my computer?

thanks so much

speed,

In a few months, Vista media center PCs will be available with CableCard slots, so you can directly record all programming (in encrypted format).

In the meantime, about the only programming you can copy to your PC is that recorded off the broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, etc). See the stickies in the Recorders forum for information on how to do this. Personally, I think it's more trouble than it's worth.

Another option to consider would be the Tivo Series3, once they release their firmware update (real soon now) with support for external hard drives.

speedemonV12, i haven't tried firewire yet. I was just answering to those who was told that they must use Verizon's own router.

I have subscribed to a MultiRoom DVR, a HD DVR, and a standard box so that I can try out all of their available options. The standard box can watch the non-HD recording off the MR DVR just as advertised and you cannot watch any recorded HD from the standard box just like everybody discovered. I also tried some Free On Demand programs and it works fine as well.

We did have some trouble getting one of the HD DVR box to come up and they wondered if is was because i was using my own router. But since the MR DVR worked, they kinda rule that out. The tech was on the phone for quite awhile and had the HD DVR reloaded a couple of times and it finally worked.

I'm going to cancel the MR DVR since the MR feature is a joke. I'm going to get a S3 Tivo to try out next.

Just tried. Firewire works as well. Read the Firewire thread for how to do it. It is not easy. I got my PC to capture/watch firewire source long time ago via a HD OTA receiver. So I've already have all the software and drivers already installed. This time is relatively easier. :)

Try it on PBS HD (Ch 803) first. That seems to be the channel that works well. Suprisingly, Discover HD doesn't work (for me).

Watching MTV HD via VLC at half size:

Left screen is MTV HD via VLC at full size. Right screen connects to the 6416 via the VIDEO port.

I have read through this thread and had a quick question:

I am planning on hooking my STB to my A/V Denon HDMI Switching Receiver, then from my receiver to a plasma tv all via HDMI Cables. STB->HMDI->Denon Receiver->HDMI->HD 1080i Plasma (No sound on the plasma, or from it).

Is this configuration the optimal for sound and video? Are there limitations I should know about prior to having these wires installed behind the wall?

From this thread it seemed that there were limitations with HDMI and DD5.1, but pro logic would work. Is this still the case? If this config is not optimal, then what is?

Thanks in advance for any info!!

Make sure your equipment are all HDCP compliant. I've tried to connect my LCD using HDMI port to it and the screen shows up for a second and it complained it is not HDCP compliant and shut off the feed. Now I'm forced to use just the Component output and the firewire output.

The County Councils of Montgomery and Prince Georges voted this week to "allow" F* cable. Montgomery should start first by the end of next month. I've been with E* since they opened their doors and have a system that has grown to 2 HD and 2 SD boxes with no DVRs. I was looking at this:http://www.nextcomwireless.com/r5000/home.htm to alter my VIP 211 so I could record HD to my home theater pc which I built with 1.5 TB. Now, interestingly, I have a new purchasing analysis to do. Iamb not sure what my E* bill is. My wife pays the bills and I think I'd have a coronary anyway. We have about every conceivable movie and HD package available.

The key for me, like some other audio/video enthusiasts is PQ#1, closely followed by programing and the ability to store a large quantity of content. Although I have not finished the analysis yet, from what I've seen, I'm leaning to F* based on my #1 alone, but I think content is comparable to E*. So, in the content storage area, F*, is so far a boat anchor for my needs, although the S3 would help in the short term. As soon as F*, with or without an S3, has the capability to write to outboard hard drives, I'll quickly fill the pc and will be looking at this: http://www.norcotek.com/item_detail.php?categoryid=12&modelno=ds1220

I too have learned allot from reading all the posts in this thread and am looking forward to joining the F* crew.

I got my FIOS TV last week. This motorola box just suck. I'm spoiled coming from a SD tivo. The remote is terrible, the interface reminds me of windows 3.1.

One thing I CANNOT get over is the 1 minute before/after buffer. it will not allow me to record another 2 shows simultaneously right after I record 2 shows preceeding them.

I haven't asked this in a while but am still looking for a direct answer: Is it possible to configure the 6416 to output PCM audio? The 6416 will not output PCM when using a coaxial digital cable between the 6416 and an AV receiver. Our local ABC and CBS digital channels have their Dolby Digital decoders set to output 5.1 24/7 so there is no way to set your receiver to get surround sound processing. There is an option for PCM mode in the Additional HDMI Settings submenu but it doesn't work with coaxial digital. I wondered if it works when running solely HDMI between your STB, AV receiver and TV. I'll know someday when I upgrade to an HDMI AV receiver but would like to know in advance. This is not the kind of question you want to ask FiOS customer support.

Noticed new firmware on my DVRs this morning ...

New Version:
GIOS: 17.23
Guide Build: 1.3.18

Old Version:
GIOS: 17.10
Guide Build: 1.3.09

Haven't really noticed many changes. So far ...

1) There's a "Change RF Output Ch." choice under the Settings -> STB Options menu. Of course, my box doesn't have RF output so I can't say if it actually does anything.

2) When you reach the end of a recording, the small square in the upper left that shows live TV now shows "End Of Show". It still has a channel label (ie, NICK) ... you can still hear audio ... but no video, just "End Of Show". Kindof goofy.

You should notice improved DVR responsiveness with this software update, namely on functions like instant replay, 30 second skip, fast forward, rewind, etc. Verizon was also considering some changes to the way the DVR pads shows, but I don't know if that is in this release or not.

When you don't have two different recordings scheduled for the same timeslot, the DVR will briefly use the second tuner to create a padding for the second recording. For example, suppose you have a recording scheduled for Prison Break @ 8pm on FOX and Heroes @ 9pm on NBC. At 7:58pm, the DVR will begin recording Prison Break on FOX using the first tuner. At 8:58pm, the second tuner will begin recording Heroes on NBC using the second tuner. For the ~3 minute period from 8:58pm when Heroes starts to 9:01pm when Prison Break ends, both tuners will be used. At 9:01pm or 9:02pm, the second tuner will be free and you can do with it as you please.

When you schedule two simultaneous recordings (i.e. two recordings @ 8pm and two recordings @ 9pm), the DVR does not do this padding, because it can't. Said a different way, the DVR just assumes that the second tuner is free and available to pad the next recording when you don't have two simultaneous recordings scheduled. The DVR really shouldn't make this assumption unless the box is turned off, but that's what it does in the current software.

My understanding is that Verizon intends to change this behavior in a future software update, but have not checked to see whether the minor update released in some markets today makes this change.

I got FIOS installed yesterday. I formerly had Cox Cable with an SA8300 DVR. PQ has improved. But I have a question.

With the SA8300, when I was watching an HDTV channel that was broadcasting a non-HD 5/4 program, I could press "Zoom1" or "Zoom2" to completely fill the screen and get rid of the side bars. It chopped a little off the top and bottom of the picture, but for most shows, that was fine.

With the 6416 DVR, I can't find a "zoom-like" comparable control. Does the 6416 lack this ability?

Also, when I use the Vizio HDTV "zoom", the left-right bars stay and the zoom occurs within the bars.

The Sharp "zoom" does not work at all when a 5/4 show is broadcast on a HDTV channel.

Is there a way to enlarge 5/4 pictures and get rid of the side bars without stretching?

i've been reading up a bunch on fios's multi room dvr's and that they are dual tuner dvr's.

I currently have a cox cable SA8300 dvr, with a SATA 320gb external inclosure, which i really like because i can now store tons of HD content. Is nice to not worry about space when watching 4hrs of football.

My question is does the mutli room dvr's that fios uses have any external ability? I really don't want to go the tivo route because it's a 800 dump, plus about the same monthly fee.(tivo needs to lower their rates)

I believe the latest moto DVR has a SATA port on it, i think this is the series 2 of the verizon DVR if i'm not mistaken.

Howevere I am told that every port including the front AV jacks are dead. The fire wire is supposedly the only live port however this cannot be confirmed.

eSata ports are only on the QIP-6412p3 & QIP-34xxp1 and now p2 STB.

The bad news is, due to a DRM problem with motorola & every current moto DCT & QIP DVR STB's software, they have been disabled until Moto can fix the problem code. Here at comcast we have been informed that a fix is about to go under some testing, and might be made available to the MSO's as early as summer 2007.

YMMV

From my own testing, that seems to be true. Only the firewire ports work.

This is another step in preparation for the major software release.

You should notice improved DVR responsiveness with this software update, namely on functions like instant replay, 30 second skip, fast forward, rewind, etc. Verizon was also considering some changes to the way the DVR pads shows, but I don't know if that is in this release or not.

Hi bfdtv,

I'm in the Tampa, FL area which is one of Verizon's big FiOS areas but when I checked the software version I'm still at 17.10! Do you know when it will get to my area?

Thanks,

Anyone have audio cut out for a sec or two every so often on varios channels? I've shortened the audio delay going from optical to coax but it still happens. It must be the source. Any other ideas.

I have been complaining to Verizon ever since I got the service (about July, 2006)about the choppy audio. At first they wouldn't admit there was a problem. The last time I called, I did have what seemed to be a knowledgeable rep and he admitted that there was a problem and that they were aware of it. I have tried the switch from optical to coax as well with the same results. It also happens to me on various channels, both HD and SD. It happens on recordings as well which makes sense since it will record whatever the source provides it.

How does the Fios box (is there only one choice?) Compare to the 8300 HD and in turn compare to the tivo Series 3? I'm trying to decide on wether or not to get the Tivo, since Fios TV is supposed to be available by the end of the month.

I'm wondering if the Fios brand DVR is any better than the Tivo 3 or the current 8300 HD that I have now.

There's no direct link. This whole thread is about the FiOS DVR and what it does well and what it doesn't do well. There's numerous mentions to the Series 3 as well. You'll need to read the whole thread to make your own decision.

If you search this thread for Series 3, you'll notice that 10% of all the posts in this thread mention it. I doubt you want links to 80 different posts.

The Fios Moto box will not compare well to any decent DVR. I don't know either of the 2 devices you list, but this thing can be a pain. My wife has literally thrown the remote across the room. But it's almost worth it for the PQ and content Verizon provides (oh, and price).
I'd get the Tivo3 if I had $700 to blow.

IMHO, the primary issue with the FiOS DVR is the remote. However, since I use a nice, programmable, universal remote this is not an issue for me. When I hooked up the QIP I encoded its controls into the remote so that FiOS functions matched up closely with those of the DirecTV HD-TiVo it was replacing. No wife issues at all due to this, and there are actually things she likes better about the QIP than the TiVo.

Yes, there are TiVo features that I miss. I like the "TiVo-classic" guide myself. The QIP has something similar, but not as easy to use. I like the TiVo's ability to show me history concerning what *didn't* record and why. However, it has been a long time since the QIP has messed up on any recordings.

Features I definitely like better about the QIP: 1. it is *much* more responsive than the TiVo, which would sometimes still on the "5 after 5" graphic for several minutes while setting a recording; 2. The small TV picture while in List or Guide mode is much nicer than TiVo's overlay approach.

I have full confidence that Verizon will continue to improve the quality and capabilities of its DVR, as I have seen significant improvement over the last year. Having been a TiVo user since the very first stand-alone TiVo, I fondly remember going through the same sort of growing pains with that product, and with the DirecTV TiVo and then HD-TiVo afterwards. It may be unfair to say that the FiOS DVR "will not compare to any decent DVR" since it is a pretty decent DVR itself.

On the 30-second skip: This was discussed way way back in this forum and likely over on dslreports as well. I have posted how I got the code onto my programmable remote (since it is not available on the FiOS remote). A Harmony remote will program this for you automatically. Yes, it works very very well as of the latest updates. If you have ever wanted to watch a football game really fast without missing any plays it is a must have.

On the wife throwing the remote: Need to work on this behavior before investing in nice programmable remote such as the Harmony or Home Theater Master :).

I used the HDMI connection from the cable box to the media center of my PDP 5060, and the sound is working. I have connected a fiber cable from my cable box to my Denon 2807 to watch movies in surrond sound. Problem is, I get no sound output into my stereo. I see the fiber optic light on from the cable box, but that's it.

Is there a setting I need to adjust for the cable box for it to play through HDMI and the fiber connection simultaneously, or am I stuck with only having one sound source.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

As noted earlier in this thread, the high-def boxes don't support multi-room functionality yet. That capability is coming with a software update in Q2 2007. Until then, you can only watch recorded high-definition programming on the DVR.

(Note you can upgrade your HDTV set-top box to the HDTV DVR for another $3/mo.)

Hi bfdtv,

First I want to say how much I appreciate your helpful insights into FiOS TV and other topics.

Do you have any feel for whether it is planned to permit sharing recorded HD programming from multiple HD DVRs on the home network? The thought being to increase the system's overall HD recording capacity from a mere 20 hours supplied by the "hub" recording device, by permitting multiple HD DVRs connected to the "remote" HDTVs to each contribute an additional 20 hours of high definition programing to every HDTV on the home network. I recall reading about a demonstration of such a feature using prototype boxes at one of the consumer shows. Unfortunately I can't recall who the manufacturer was.

If this is not in the works, do you know whether the SATA connections are intended to permit the connection of supplementary storage capacity?

Thanks again.

Larry

Larry,

The eSATA & USB port's are disabled till Motorola can fix a DRM problem in the STB interface.

Last report is that they hope to have this problem resolved by mid 2007 for all MSO's that use the DCT & QIP DVR STB.

Just in case anyone cares. I have the new update on my 6416 and it is still unresponsive to commands, and now has an issue where it will randomly think I am recording. Whatever channel I am on, when I try to switch it will say "you are recording on x channel, continue or stop recording." if you select stop, it will say it switched to the next channel, but it will not switch. Change channels again and it will give you the continue/stop dialog again. Responsiveness was improved, slightly, but I have had plenty of times where it gets slow to respond to commands. Sometimes 30+seconds late, but at least now it eventually does respond. Before it would sometimes be completely uncontrolable and randomly respond to some commands I gave it in no perceivable order.

Very frustrating and really shows how poorly the interface is designed/works. I would rate it as "alpha 2" status.

Rebooting seems to help.

So your telling me that Verizon is looking at all of the posts in here and logging all of the problems into the bug report? Or as most techs have told me "This needs to be handled by an engineer" ie someone who can do something about the problems.

If this is true then I guess my wife and I should sit down for a few hours and write up a nice long post with every bug and UI issue we have noticed over the past 8+ months. Then Verizon will have no excuse not to know about the problems the next time I call when a show is cut off half way or the box locks up or the remote will not work unless I am directly in front of the box.

You have to press "off" and "menu" fairly quickly to get the setup screen to appear. You will have options to set your HD output as well as the resolution of your SD output (I believe the choices are 480i, 480p, and Off. I have had the best performance with "off", which causes the SD pictures to be upconverted to your HD output resolution)

No, I don't. That is why you should also call the 888 number and report it to a phone tech so they can log the issue. It would be nice if Verizon had an internal board (or similar) that reported all of the known issues that the phone techs could read and keep updated.

Is there a way to stop recording a program in midstream?Select the program in the list ... there will be an option 'Cancel Recording' ... if you select that there will be an option to stop the recording. It will be stopped, not deleted ... if you want to delete it you have to do so as you normally would.

I think if you tune to the channel and hit 'Stop' you can also get to the 'Cancel Recording' option.

I'm also interested. Is it still looking like at least a few months? I understand the Tivo 3 could be first.

I really don't understand how they can allow you to take copyrighted media off the DVR and put it on a PC. I've heard there is a TiVo service that allows this, so I guess it's possible. I'm just thinking there would be a lot of legal red tape to release such a product.

You can use a pc to record the live video/audio feed via firewire.

How is it any different in pricipal than recording onto a VCR or DVD recorder? I would think it would only get sticky if you tried to sell or distribute copyrighted material.

Hi,

Agreed, however, Hollywood isn't going to take our word for it that our intention is merely fair use rather than sale and distribution. Therefore, there has to be a technical solution that they are comfortable with.

I'm not a computer guru, but I would imagine that a solution that provided the same level of security to the hard drive in a PC that is currently provided for the hard drive in the DVR, would be a prerequisite for acceptance. For example if a SATA connection between the DVR and PC merely resulted in a convenient means of increasing the DVR's capacity without permitting distribution to the Internet, that might be acceptable. By the way, distribution within the confines of a home network, with PCs or other Set Top Boxes, would be an application of fair use. After all it's no different than walking a legally purchased DVD disc from one player to an other.

Hi ALL,

I just got the new version 17.23 of the sw for the DVR. Does anyone know what it fixed and/or any added features.

Two things that may have been coincidences. When I turned on my TV (which has a CableCard so I can get all my channels without turning on the DRV) yesterday evening, all the channels came up blank except the lower analog channels. I turned on the DVR and switched the TV to its input and again all the channels were blank except for the analog ones. I called my neighbor that also has FiOS and they were getting the same thing. I then called FiOS tech support and after waiting for about 10 minutes I gave up figuring everyone was calling in with the same problem. A few minutes after I hung up I tried a digital channel and they were all back. Being curious I checked the DVR's sw version and it was 17.23.

The other strange thing is for the last week or so when I would pick up any phone I would hear a short beep before the dial tone started. Everything else on all the phones worked fine, but just got that short beep. Now after the TV channels came back the beep is no longer there, which is like it had always been.

Could Verizon have re-booted the ONTs when they restored the channels???

Thanks,
Gerry

i heard you can now buy a RC1445301 remote upgrade from verizon CSR for $5 + shipping. It is made by Philips Electronics Singapore Pte. Ltd. The most exciting thing i found in the spec is that several keys will be back lit.

"Green backlight is used to highlight the remote in the dark for keys – OK, VOLUME+/-,
CHANNEL+/-, SKIP FORWARD, SKIP BACKWARD, FAST FORWARD, FAST
REWIND, STOP and PLAY/PAUSE.
Red backlight is used to highlight the remote in the dark for keys – POWER and FIOS

I am currently a Comcast subscriber (not by choice) but as soon as our CO is lit for TV (within the next 30 days I hope) will be switching to FIOS. I just purchased a Harmony 670. The keypad layout is designed for DVR use. It works great with the Moto 6412. My bet is that it will also work well with the FIOS 6416 given that the comcast remotes work well with the 6416. Even does the 30 second skip.

Sorry for the confusion. I asked Verizon to change out my remotes because I don't like the Motorola units. They function 100% correctly with the STB but I don't like them because the buttons are too small. The SciAtl units came with a $5 upgrade fee because I was asking to switch. Didn't seem unreasonable to me.

You made it perfectly clear several messages (months) ago that Verizon was a rip off, and you stated, in no uncertain terms, that you were NOT going to get FIoS TV because DirectTV was all that and cheaper to boot (see your previous messages if you don't remember). Since then, as a previous poster said, you have made nothing but disparaging remarks, rolled your eyes, etc, adding nothing to the thread. Had FIOS internet for a almost year, just got a Panny HDTV so upgraded to FIOS tv. Great product.

I have 2 HD DVRs and a STB and while I'll have to look when I get home for make and model, the remote is pretty decent. It's not quite like the SCIATL but close. Big red "FIOS" button in the middle, glows red, handles multiple devices. Has forward skip, backwards skip. Far better functionality than the Comcast remote that it replaced. Miss the "page up" and "page down" functionality for the remote and the ability to easily change the date of the day on the guide.

Edit: Remotes have a tag that says "RC 1445301/008" Made in China. Are Verizon branded but have no other distinguishing markings.. The instruction sheet tah came with simply says Verizon Fios TV Remote Control.

I have a Harmony 880 that has picked up all the feature set of the remote perfectly.

As far as I know, the remotes came with the boxes :)

The utility of the DVR is impressive after coming from Comcast. The interface could use some work, it's not that easy to do things as fast but the guide is so much more flexible than Comcast. Never had a Tivo, so can't compare.

Still learning tricks on use.

SD tv looks great and the HD is stunning.

Hi All,

As I compose this posting Verizon subcontractors are tearing up my grass as they extend the FiOS mainline through my subdivision.

I'm interested in finding out which specific high definition stations they currently offer. I've gone to their web site and frankly their information is rather sparse and vague. Could someone please post a detailed HD channel lineup?

Does anyone recall roughly how long it took for Verizon to offer service from the time their yard was ripped up?

Thanks.

Well, my wife threw the remote again. No, I haven't switched to a universal yet, but this time I think it was the DVR. The light/dot in the lower right corner of the display was solid and stuck. This usually indicates the box is processing.
The last time I complained about this, they said the DVR may be getting an update.
So my question is... does anyone know how many times a day the box updates itself? It seems to be happening more than once a day. Is it a set schedule?

The only CC setting on the STB is for the STB CC decoder and you can find that in the User Settings menu. (STB on standby (off) press menu)

Read your TV booklet and see if it can decode CC signals embedded in the Video from HDMI, S-Video, Component, composite

For digital TV, the closed captions are generated by the receiver/tuner. In this case, that is the 6416. Turn the 6416 off and press menu on the remote or front panel. This will bring up the setup menu for setting the HD channel output, the SD channel output, and the closed caption options.

Unless the TV can display closed captions for HDMI SD signals, set 4:3 override to 480p to get closed captions for the SD digital channels. 480i results in a NTSC pass through in effect.

Scroll down and enable close captions. You can change the color, background, font size and so on for the caption display. For example, my 6416 is currently set to: font size: small, font style:default, font color: red, font opacity: solid, font edge type: none, font edge color: auto, background color: auto, background opacity: transparent, settings: user.

Thanks for the tip. I enabled CC from the User Settings menu and I was able to see the CC text via HDMI.

I couldn't find any reference specifically discussing CC via HDMI in the owners manual, but it appears CC doesn't work through HDMI on this TV. That's too bad because it's more cumbersome to enable/disable CC on the STB than on the TV. But at least I know I can do it. Thanks again!

We have 1 plain STB and 2 6416. Came from Comcast, where the up and down "curser" buttons brought up the guide and let you maneuver through the guide.

On the plain STB, this is also how the cursor keys work. Hitting the up or down key brings up the mini-guide and one can work from there.

On the 6416, when watching live TV, the cursor keys instead bring up what looks like a DVR "elapsed time" display and the picture pauses. I could understand seeing that if you are using any of the pause, play, rewind buttons, but this "discrepant" behavior is annoying the heck out of my wife. Actions that work as she thinks they should on the bedroom tv with the plain STB cause disruption on the HDTV in the family room. She demands consistency!

The only way to see the guide on the DVR is to hit the Guide button (which gets you the big guide, not the mini-guide). This behavior is seen both with the Fios remotes and with my Harmony 880, which makes me believe it's how the DVR box thinks it should respond to the signal, and not a bad or misprogrammed remote.

Before I call FIOS to see if this is something goofy just with us, I thought I'd ask if anyone else seen this? And if it is common, is there a way to change this behavior?

All I want is to be able to hit the cursor keys and see the guide on the 6416 like I do on the plain STB.

I had the same complaint initially. When we first got the service, I talked to a CS rep and asked him to duplicate the behavior and the same thing happened to him. The only solution is to hit the select key first. Give it a day and the extra button press to hit select becomes second nature.

But, with the DVRs, while watching a live show or recording, hit the OK button. This will bring up a little bar telling you what's currently on (video keeps playing). From there, you can hit the left/right arrow buttons if you want a 1 channel / 1 line guide. Or, you can hit the up/down arrow buttons for the normal 4 channels / 4 lines mini-guide.

This is what AG23 was getting at above.

As an alternative, you can hit Menu, and scroll down (one) to select the Mini-Guide. That always works too.

BTW, on the DVRs, if you don't hit the OK button first (while watching a live show or recording) the cursor buttons work as follows:
UP = Play/Pause
DOWN = Stop
LEFT = Rewind
RIGHT = Fast Forward

Kindof goofy ... but ... if you don't like the normal placement of the FF/Play/RW buttons you can use the Right, Up, Left cursor buttons instead.

Well, if that's the case, maybe my box was misbehaving initially and is now acting normally. Still, I like it better without the menu coming up when I turn the box on, if there's any way to disable that.

If you leave your 6416 on 24/7, do you know whether that affects download and installation of firmware updates? Probably the unit has to be on to receive updates, but I could see where the unit might have to be turned off and back on, or even rebooted completely, for any changes to take effect.

UP = Play/Pause
DOWN = Stop
LEFT = Rewind
RIGHT = Fast Forward

Kindof goofy ... but ... if you don't like the normal placement of the FF/Play/RW buttons you can use the Right, Up, Left cursor buttons instead.

This should be in the manual, thanks to all who answered. Never thought to hit the OK button firstand that isn't a big deal for the wife.

I do find it interesting tah the remote has no page up/page down buttons (useful when maneuvering thru the guide) but the ones on my Harmony work just fine.

Which model Harmony remote is needed for the 30 sec skip?
ie: the least expensive model.

Thanks.

I think any harmony should be able to do it because they all use the same software and have the same basic functionality. The differ by looks, features, button layout, and bells and whistles. The least expensive I think is the 550. I have the 670 and am having a second delivered today. The nice thing about the 670 is that the button layout is great for DVR users. Easy to transition from the moto or comcast remotes and th 30 second skip works (at least when programmed to replicate the 6412 functions). You can get the 670 for about $110 from Buy.com using google checkout.

I'm still with Comcast while waiting for FIOS rollout in the next few months. The Comcast DVR, however, is basically a half sibling to the Verizon model. As recommended by many experts, I keep my DVR on 24/7. That seems to minimize the issues I have. In fact, over the past few months, the DVR has pretty much been issue free, even series recording.

The two remotes Verizon has distributed so far (AFIK) both have page up / down buttons ...

Motorola DRC800 - http://www22.verizon.com/fiosforhome/images/fiostv/drc800_user_guide.pdf
Small page up/down arrows above the cursor arrows ... below the Help / Last buttons

Scientific Atlanta AT8550 - http://www.scientificatlanta.com/ExplorerClubGuides/getting_started/734357.pdf
Page up/down buttons are to the right of the cursor arrows ... above the exit button

Yes ... they come in handy in lots of places.

Yes it says Page, but on the DVR, if you press that button while the guide is open, it changes the channel. The page function so far eludes me, despite the label.

This does come with 30 sec skip standard and is really a decent unit out of the box. The DVR does respond to page up/page down commands from my Harmony 880, so the DVR will take commands if the remote will send them.

Just been kind of a pain figuring out both the new remote and the new DVR interface (came from comcast a week ago)

That remote definately looks like it's designed to work (in some specific ways) with the 'new' / 'big update' of their software Verizon has been hinting at / working on. Unfortunately ... using it with the current software ... well, I can see it being a little quirky.

Anyway, I would guess that remote will become more 'usable' / 'intuitive' once the new software is rolled out ...

Let me preface this post by saying that I have poor quality power running to my entertainment area. I do realize the proper fix for this is probably to setup a new dedicated circuit just for home theater equipment but do not see that happening in the near future.

Sooooo, on to the point... Due to the poor quality power, I have been plugging all of my equipment into a Belkin UPS (F6C650-USB) that has AVR (supposed to help with brownouts). I have had my TV and DirecTivo plugged into the battery backup for the past 6mos with no problems. The TV is plugged in so that the cooling fan on the bulb (rear proj) keeps running if the power goes out. It's nice to have the Tivo plugged in because it will keep recording even if the power goes out...

Now I have the 6416 and the TV plugged into the battery backup. Strangely enough, when I test the setup by pulling AC power (or when actual power goes out), the 6416 seems susceptible to whatever dropout does happen and resets itself. This has become annoying as I have been experiencing brownouts at least once a day causing the box to reset. The box does restart a recording once it is powered up and going but it does miss a minute or two while rebooting. Additionally, even though it does restart recording, the unit does not turn back on by itself. I only find that annoying because the DirecTivo doesn't have an 'off' state so that's what I'm used to.

I find it interesting that the 6416 is susceptible to this while the DirectTivo and TV show no problems at all.

I realize I'm a little late on this issue, but I just now managed to read through this entire thread and noticed that nobody had provided a solution to your situation. Your problem could be that the Belkin UPS you bought creates a simulated (square) sinewave rather than a true sinewave. From what I've read about UPSs, whenever there is a sharp edge in the waveform many harmonics are generated. These harmonics can leak into the equipment thru the power supply and distort the waveforms that are being used to operate your equipment, creating problems. Some electronic devices, particularly HD sets and set top boxes where timing issues are critical, may be more susceptible to this than others. The sudden shift from a pure sinewave power source to a square wave source when you pull the plug could be the problem. Do a search on the internet for pure sinewave UPS to get information on those types of UPSs. If the extra cost is more than you want to pay, a good line conditioner may be a better choice for your situation than a simulated wave UPS.

Now that Verizon has been approved for TV distribution in NJ, I am looking forward to switching from Cablevision. We have Fios internet in our town, therefore I hope we are among the first served.

From the screen shots in this thread, the interface is a lot more tivo-like than my SA8300 from Cablevision.

Anyway, a question to those who have had Fios TV. Do the non-HD movie channels in the movie packages (HBO, Starz/Encore, Showtime/TMC, Cinemax) broadcast in DD 5.1 when the movie is available as such?

On Cablevision, it seems only a few of the SD movie channels will utilize it (none on the non-HD Cinemax channels). I don't know whether this is up to the cable provider or the limitations of the channels themselves.

Thanks!

Well, its either a newer or older remote because I dont have a skip back button on it. You would think I got a new remote since I just had Fios TV installed last week. I saw a pic of another FiosTV remote a page or so ago, and its definatly not that one.

I've had DirecTV service with Tivo for several years and it has been great. However, I'm now switching to HD, and Cablevision becomes more competitive, since they have more local sports in HD, no equipment purchase or long term commitment, etc, no long wait for the HDTV DVR (DirecTV can't give me a date) and neither uses Tivo anyway. As such I had Cablevision install two SD8300's yesterday, while still keeping my dish in service for a few more days.

I can't emphasize enough how primitive this box is compared to Tivo. No search features (title, keyword, subject, actor ... nothing!), no time elapsed shown on the status bar, no increment jumps on the bar, no way to jump to the beginning and end, no indication if a show is a repeat in the guide, 1970's style graphics, no auto rewind on fast forward, no way to eliminate channels that you don't get from the guide, no wish list feature, etc. The greed of DirecTV and Cablevision in refusing to work with Tivo is a real shame. Sorry for the rant, but this is a huge step backwards. Does anyone know if the Verizon Fios box come closer to Tivo than either of these?

I have Verizon coming to install FIOS Internet on Jan 04. Have to decide if I should drop D* and order TV as well.
Posters here seem to be split on TV service - good and bad. I've been pretty satisfied with D*, except for limited HD offerings. FIOS has more HD, but not that much more.
I now get locals OTA, HD is uncompressed and generally looks great. Worried that locals from FIOS will look worse.
Then, there's price. It seems to me that they should be offering a much better deal if you're buying 2, or more, services from them. Jeez, they only have to run the one cable to your house.
Has anyone gotten a better deal than $35 each for Internet and TV plus $13 for the DVR?

We just had FIOS TV installed and we are evaluating vs. Comcast. It appears that the Verizon supplied remote (Motorola) is not as user friendly as the Comcast supplied remote. From reading this forum I am aware of the lack of ability to program a 30 second skip. But, in addition, the "swap" function does not work with the DVR. With Comcast, the "swap" allowed you to switch between the two tuners so you could pause one program, swap over to the other tuner, watch for awhile and then swap back and resume. Am I missing something in the use of the Verizon remote or is this feature just not available with Verizon?

FiOS looks as good as OTA, with less possibility for interference & multipath. D* really compresses everything a lot... HD and SD. Plus you never have to worry about outages when the clouds roll in... as rarely as that happens. I do like the D* guide but it's not that big of a difference.
I believe you get something like $5 off one or more FiOS services if you commit to a year.

I've had FiosTV for about a week now and I'm very close to canceling the service. Besides not having the jump back button on my remote, my #1 complaint so far is the fact that not all shows are labeled "Repeat" "New" or whatever. This is a big problem. For instance, I go to record "The Dog Whisperer" on NGHD, and set the options to record only new shows. Well, since the "New" isnt taged on any shows (or even Repeat), it goes ahead just records every show in the guide! Unacceptable.

Also, IMO, standard def sucks compared to D*. And thats really saying something because I really never like their SD either.

Thats the short list of complaints. On the flip side, HD is slightly better. More HD channels are nice. But thats about it.

I have a 720p LCD. Would it be better to have all HD output to 720p or just pass through all HD so that either 1080i or 720p gets passed depending on the station?

Secondly, I have read that this setting can be adjusted by pressing (and rather quickly) the menu button while the unit is in standby. However, I can't seem to get into this menu. Was this disabled in a recent firmware?

So with the Verizon remote we have lost the ability to program a 30 second skip, lost the "swap" feature between the two dvr tuners and have lost the "All On" feature. From reading this thread it looks like a Harmony remote will allow programming of the 30 second skip and, most likely, would have the "all on' feature. Does the Harmony remote allow programming of the "swap" feature as well? If so, does anyone know on which model(s)?

THis is kind of a broad jump, as the Verizon remotes I have been given have the 30 second skip and the 8 sec back feature "out of the box". It appears that there are differnet remotes out there, so some, like mine, may have the feature while others don't.

That said, my Harmony has page up and page down functionality that the DVR box supports that the remote lacks. And the swap function does not work on my Harmony, but I haven't really played with that.

Not sure what "all on" is, but the Fios remote I have does turn on and off automatically the TV, audio receiver and the DVR STB. The technicial set it up.

I have 1 STB and 2 HD DVRs and use the harmony with 1 of the DVRs, and use the Fios remotes with the other 2. Those other 2 handle the stb/DVR and TV in a similar fashion. I don't know the answer but you raise an interesting question; does, and if so, why, does the system care at all if there is a computer around in the first place? I mean, are they saying that in order to have FIOS TV and a multi-room DVR you must also have the internet, and must also run a windows PC?

Otherwise the requirements seem independent of each other excpet for functions that depend upon a coputer, such as sending pictures from a computer to TVs. But the DVR is what is sending the picture to the other STBs, so what glicth does having a Mac bring into play?

Doesn't make sense.

According to the info on FIOS site, the router that Verizon supplies is required for the multiroom DVRs. The router has a coax (in addition to Ethernet) connection. Now, the router will talk to both PCs and MACs, they're both just devices with an IP address.
Don't know why it would need a PC in order to direct content to one of the STBs. Having the DVR and STBs registered with the router sounds like it should be enough.

any chance you were trying to watch a program that was recorded in HD in a different room? if so, that is not supported. The STBs have the ability to view jpgs (for example) on your computer if you install some service / app that will share those particular folders with the STB.

Update: I finally ( after three different people) was able to talk to someone at Verizon who was knowledgable about the MultiRoom DVR. He told me that for the multi-room DVR you don't even have to have a computer. He said that when my service was activated they did not enable the multi-room function. He enabled it and one hour later the feature was available on my other two STBs.
I think their is confusion between Media manager and the Home Media DVR. Media manager allows you to send your pictures and music from your PC to your tv and this requires a Windows PC. The Home media DVR allows viewing programs (SD) recorded on the DVR in another room via a STB. This feature does not require a Windows PC( or any PC) and this is the feature that I was trying to get the CSRs from Verizon to activate, not Media manager. Anyway, I have it now and thanks to all who responded. BTW, I was not trying to watch a HD program on the other boxes, it was a SD program and as I said , it is now available.

Got my Fios TV installed today - Fair Haven NJ - Two of the 6416's, 3 regular boxes. One of the DVR's is the master, all features work well. Anyone know if it's possible to have both DVR's as Multi Room, not really that important to me but just wondering.
Does anyone use the Home Media feature yet, didnt see much about it in all my reading. Looks like I need to have it activated. Can you see photos from either of the two DVR's?
My kids are really happy with the picture quality on their standard tv's. I'm a veteran HD watcher, been through satelite, OTA, Cable, and now Fios. I am very impressed with the Standard Definition stuff, HD is beautiful, but it always is. Still running the RCA 38310, yea I'm ready for an upgrade. I've got a Aquos upstairs in the bedroom, looks great.

Lots of differences from the Comcast Box, I dont really find the need to complain, I will be asking for the new remote, I hear it's coming out soon, I mainly want a back light. Might have to buy one.
I will miss the Swap feature, and whats the deal with PIP? I guess they will add stuff as they grow. I did say I wasnt going to complain right:)

One thing I dont really understand. I changed my 4 x 3 conversion to "OFF" from the menu. I dont understand what the other things do, I know what Stretch does, and I hate that. The other modes that fill my screen dont really look that bad, but the I love the sharpness of the pic when you turn it OFF.

The two techs were very professional, did a nice job changing all the connectors on all of my cables, and running a couple new cables here and there. They knew a lot about the installation, but didnt know much about how the product works. Things I learned in 24 hours of reading this forum:)

anyway, I'm happy so far.

I wonder, I have an older projection tv , (not DLP) and I was always worried about the burn in of 4x3 on the 16x9 screen. Having said that, it appears that the box projects its' own letterbox on the sides of the image and does not just pass through the 4x3 image thereby negating the issue.
Anyone have any thoughts on this ??

i noticed a slight 4x3 burn in on my 2003 RPTV after having set 4:3 passthru to off after about 4 weeks. i don't know if it was directly caused by this setting, but i have since set it to stretch.

By buddy has had a Hitach rear projection for about five years and not suffered any burn in. He watches 4:3 often and plays X-Box a lot.

My other buddy has a Panasonic RPTV and has Halo (the game) burned in it! Some tv's seem to be more suceptible to burn in than others.

You can use the silver Comcast remote with FIOS and it can be programmed with the 30 second skip. The "all on" works as well. You can pick up a new remote off of Ebay for about $10. That is what I did.

why when i'm watching HD football on a local channel that multicasts on the HD DVR does the picture sometimes stutter? it used to have macroblocking, but that has been replaced with this new problem...is it just me or do others see this?

Im getting stuttering all the time it seems. especially on some HD recorded shows. I'm about to pick up the phone and call Verizon about this.

I have four of the Comcast "Silver" remotes. Two are the "DVR" variety, and the other two are the "On Demand" variety (missing the three "DVR" buttons, and the useless "PIP" buttons, but those can be re-mapped to other, less used buttons). All four work fine with the FIOS QIP6416.
As others have mentioned, almost every button can be programmed (only the top 5, and the "All On" cannot be programmed). You can even program macros if you want.
I had remapped several buttons for my Comcast service, and the only buttons I had to reprogram for FIOS were the "On Demand" button, and the "A" button (for the widgets). The 30-second skip works great.
I got my extra remotes from eBay. They are not expensive, and are very easy to program for all your devices. I recommend that you write down all the code numbers for your devices, and any functions you re-map.
For example, I re-mapped the "power" function in "cable" mode to do the TV power instead of the Cable power (since I never turn the box off, anyway). That way, I almost never need to change devices at the top of the remote.

The forum won't let me post the URLs, so I've put them in the attachment.

Has anyone figured out how to make the "Swap" function work on the DVR?
I'm using the Comcast "Silver" remote. The code for the Swap function is 00236, but it doesn't seem to do anything.
Also, does anyone know if any of the USB ports are active for a keyboard (really handy for searches and stuff)?

To my knowledge, that "feature" is not available on FIOS. Either Verizon has not enabled it or it is not possible on the DVR. I don't know why it's not available.
