I have two 6416 DVRs with the FIOS TV system. When fast forwarding recorded shows at 3X and 4X the DVRs jump through the programs without showing them all and return to the original menu.
Does anyone else have trouble with the fast forwarding on these DVRs?
With 4X FF yes, but 3X no, it goes fast, but I am able to stop it rather easily.
I put in an order to update one of my DVRs to a multi room DVR, they said allow a few minutes before it is active, anybody know how long a few minutes is? It's been about an hour and I'm not seeing the Recordings Menu on the SD STB.
Whuffo.
Verizon is right. It is a combination of the broadcast and the amount of overscan or the horizontal position on your set. Is there an option to adjust the horizontal position on your set? In my case I just adjusted the horizontal position in the service menu a few tics and it took care of it.
xterra13 02-04-07, 12:38 PM Is there a way to change the color of the IPG? I have 2 QIP-6416 HD DVRs. One of them has a blue IPG while the other is green. I have not found anywhere that allows me to change this. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

I don't believe so, is it possible that one of your component cables has 1 of the 3 plugs not plugged in?
PilotBob 02-05-07, 11:07 AM Of course, I'd prefer to see it in 1080i instead of 720p.
Why is that? 720p is actually better than 1080i... see this web site that explains it:
http://alvyray.com/DigitalTV/
Also, 1080p is not now and probably won't ever be used for broadcast TV since it uses too much bandwith. This is why I don't understand those commercials that tout a 1080p TV as the official NFL TV or whatever since you can never see an NFL game in 1080p. Unless maybe it is on Blue-ray or HD-DVD which are the only ways to get a 1080p source with a 1080p signal as far as I know.
BOb
1080I will look better then a 720p on a 1080p set.

The poster has an agenda or is simply misinformed (http://www.hqv.com/technology/index1/deinterlacing).
Movies and episodic content like Heroes and CSI broadcast on channels like CBS, NBC, and HBO-HD is native 1080p. The only native 1080i60 source is video, like sports -- virtually everything else is 1080p24, just like Blu-ray and HD-DVD. For more information on how this works, see this video tutorial (http://www.hqv.com/technology/index1/cadence_detection).

Does anyone else have trouble with the fast forwarding on these DVRs?This seems to happen whenever using FF4X beyond the mid-point of a recording. It's clearly a bug -- as a workaround, I would suggest using FF3X (or slower) after you reach the mid-point of a recording.
blambert 02-06-07, 02:26 PM How do I check the output resolution? I am using a CRT at 1080i, but I don't know if the STB is set for 720p and the TV is just making the conversion. I just want to confirm I am using the right resolution, but do not see the setting in the menu options.

leave the TV on, turn the STB off and press the menu key. A configuration screen will appear where you can set your options for HD and for SD. For HD, in general, you can obtain the best results by picking the resolution closest to your display's native resolution. I have 720p displays so I use 720p. You might want to test both to see which is better. For SD, you would set 4:3 override. I use 480i and let my display deinterlace and scale. This is consistent with the advice to let the STB do the minimum of processing.
DaveGoodrich 02-06-07, 06:11 PM Can anyone give a simple explanation of what each of the settings for "4:3 Overide" mean? I am frustrated with any of the settings when using my 6416 with my HP PL4260N plasma.
Basically, I want to be able to view HD channels in 16:9 and SD channels in 4:3 while surfing. But when I encounter a letterboxed SD channel, I would like to be able to zoom to fill the screen with the 16:9 image. I can do this when I use OTA digital channels by leaving the HP's aspect setting on "auto" until I want to zoom a letterboxed SD channel to full screen, then I would use the "zoom 2" aspect setting.
I can't find a setting for the "4:3 overide" on the 6416 which gives me the same functionality. I can't remember exactly how it behaves using each setting since I am away from home right now, but basically, I either get a 16:9 image all the time (stretched SD channels, which I hate), or I get 4:3 SD images that I can't stretch.
Like rosh400 said, it seems that setting it to 480i would be the right setting to mimic the behavior of OTA SD channels, but as I remember it, when I set it to 480i, the SD channels are stretched to 16:9 when my TV's aspect is set to "auto." This is also true when I set it to "480p." When I set the 4:3 overide to "off," the SD channels are 4:3 and the HD channels are 16:9, but I can't stretch the SD channels with my TV.
BTW, I am using the HDMI connection between the STB and the TV.
When I get home later, I will update this with the exact behavior with each setting.
Thanks,

Sorry to say this, but there's no easy answer here. :(
I have the same combo. After pulling my hair out for a while on this very problem, I sprang for a Samsung DVD-R135 DVD recorder. This unit can be had for around $150 and it does a GREAT job of upscaling SD content via its HDMI port.
So, for SD content ONLY, I have the 6416 feed the DVD-R135 via S-video and then have it upscale to 1080i out the HDMI port which feeds the PL4260N. Same for my VCR via RCA to the DVD-R135.
I select HDMI as the input on the TV to watch all DVDs, VCR tapes, and SD TV shows coming from the 6416. All these pass through the DVD-R135 and are upscaled to 16:9 at 1080i.
For HD shows, I use the component output of the 6416 direct to the PL4260N bypassing the DVD player (since no upscale required).
I consider this an affordable workaround. Long term, a new A/V receiver with multiple HDMI inputs and upscaling capability is the way to go. That's a lot more $$$ however.
I use a Harmony 880 remote to make all of this painless for the family.

So if your SD content is upconverted to 16:9 at 1080i, does that mean it is stretched to fill the 16:9 screen, or does it have black bars on the sides? If you are watching letterboxed SD content, does it have black bars all the way around? If so, can you use the HP TV to zoom the letterboxed SD screen to fill the 16:9 TV screen?
Thanks,

Dont think you can do this. I miss this feature as well. I could do it with my old Tivo but not with the moto. Hopefully they with include this in their firmware some day.

I get this functionality on my (Sony) TV by setting the "4:3 override" setting on the DVR to 480i and then setting the "4:3 Default" on my TV to "Normal". Then when I surf, the SD channels default to pillar-boxed (by the TV) 4:3 and if I want to use the TV's aspect control to stretch / zoom ... I can.
Setting the "4:3 override" setting to off causes the box to output SD channels via pillarboxed (by the DVR) HD which ... on most TVs means no ability to stretch / zoom.

The moto box works with my Sony displays (flat panel LCD and rear projection LCD) the same way. I have 4:3 override set to 480i and programs display in their original aspect ratio. I use the TV's zoom function to zoom letterboxed 4:3 content without a problem.

I guess it is TV dependent. My set doesn't have anything similar to "4:3 Default." It only has "Auto", "16:9", "4:3", a couple of zoom settings, and a "panarama" (which only works with analog signals). For some reason, when I set the STB to "480i" and the TV's aspect to "auto," the SD channels are stretched horizontally to fill the 16:9 screen (which I really don't like, especially on letterboxed SD screens, which are stretched horizontally, but not vertically, resulting in a ~3:1 aspect)
How would running through the component input change this behavior? Maybe I could use component for SD and HDMI for HD and then use my Harmony remote to set up seperate activities for SD and for HD.
Thanks again,

I would think setting the DVR to 480i and the TV to 4:3 should result in pillarboxed (by the TV) 4:3 SD with the ability to then change to "zoom" or whatever other aspect ratio you wanted ...
Sounds like in "Auto" the TV is making it's best guess at what it should do ... which isn't quite what you want it to do ...

You are correct, its the Auto setting on the TV that doesn't work right. If I set the 4:3 overide to 480i or 480p on the STB, the TV's "Auto" setting stretches it horizontally to fill the 16:9 screen. I can change the TV aspect to 4:3 to view SD properly (or use the zoom to fill the screen with a letterboxed 4:3 channel). The only problem is that I have to change the aspect back to 16:9 (or Auto) for HD channels. I was just hoping there was a setting on the STB that allowed the "Auto" to actually be Auto.
Since they both behave the same way, what are the pros/cons of using 480i vs. 480p? Is it just a matter of whether the STB or the TV is doing the deinterlacing and scaling?
Thanks again,
I've tried to read through most of thread and have seen some others complain about sound issues with certain TVs connected to the 6416 via HDMI cable.
the problem I am having is with a Fujitsu Plasma and the sound will skip for a second every once in a while while watching HD and SD. When I listen through my receiver everything is fine (using audio cables). I've heard the issue is with the HDMI Cable. My TV is on the wall and I only have components and HDMI routed through the wall (no audio cables) so HDMI is my only option at this point.
Does anyone know of a fix on eliminating this hesitation and still use the HDMI cable? Could there be a setting on my TV?
So if your SD content is upconverted to 16:9 at 1080i, does that mean it is stretched to fill the 16:9 screen, or does it have black bars on the sides? If you are watching letterboxed SD content, does it have black bars all the way around? If so, can you use the HP TV to zoom the letterboxed SD screen to fill the 16:9 TV screen?
Thanks,
This really is specific to this TV/STB combo so I'll respond to your post in the PL4260N owners thread with more detail.
The short answer is that my prime objective was to never see black bars. It was possible to achieve this for 4:3 content with "Zoom 2" on the TV for the "S-video" inputs but that didn't look good to my eyes.
The other possibility was to have the 6416 set to "4:3 stretch" which resulted in terrible PQ.
The Samsung DVD R135 (or any good upscaling DVD player or A/V receiver) actually fills the screen with the proper aspect ratio.
I'll post a couple of pictures of the difference when I get a chance.

I'd call Fujitsu and see if they have a firmware update for your TV. Many TVs have audio handshake issues with the 64xx STBs. My HP PL4260N required a firmware update before audio would work correctly. HDMI is still a loose standard and Motorola has interpreted it differently then some of the TV makers.
uncertainty 02-10-07, 08:41 AM Swap doesn't work on the FiOS DVR. All you can do is change channels, then use the "Last" button to "swap" (between tuners if you're recording.) But any buffering is lost every time you change channels.
I'm pretty certain Tivo has a patent for this and the reason why the swap button will not pause and buffer the other tuner. Just have to get used to using the record button to swap back and not lose any content.

Don't think that's it. I have a Comcast 6412 which is a close cousin of the VZ unit and swap works. It a VZ software issue and hopefully they will implement it.

that would be like patenting the on off button. I think its a software feature from everything i have read.
I think its a software feature from everything i have read.Tivo has plenty of software patents that cover implementations of all sorts of DVR features.
Some DVR features can be implemented in a different, non-infringing way, while others cannot.
In case you are wondering, Comcast, COX, DirecTV have all licensed technology from Tivo and/or reached agreements. Dish Network, FiOS, and most other cable providers have not.
I recently had FiOS installed. I got the MRDVR with a STB in the bedroom. We very seldom use the bedroom TV and probably won't use the DVR feature in there. The Media Manager feature seems to be a bug-ridden, pretty useless feature for the extra $7 / month. Is there any other difference in these DVR's? And is switching merely a matter of re-programming it from the office ... or does it require a tech visit?

It's just a matter of them sending a signal to turn a flag off on the DVR. I agree about the Media Manager being buggy, 1/2 the time it won't even start for me. I do like the multi-room feature though, as I have my SD STB in a room w/my treadmill.
mike240se 02-10-07, 07:12 PM I am sorry, i just dont have the time to read 43 pages and have searched to no avail, does this box actually work with an external sata drive like the SA box doeS? I currently have cablevision and the SA HD DVR box and added a 320gb e-sata drive and it keeps turning off on me all the time and rebooting and then giving me an error for 5 to 60 minutes till it will work so i am thinking of switching to fios tv cause its available and would be getting the hd dvr box and want to make sure i will be able to continue to use an external drive to expand the storage since i need alot for hd programing that i record.

No External Storage option on any of the Motorola DCT, DCH, QIP Series STB for now. There is a problem with the DRM code. Motorola is working on a fix, that would then allow MSO the option of enabling external drive support.
Summer 2007 is the last reported time frame for beta testing this fix.

Thank you for your quick response, is it then not worth it to change? I could get the box replaced from cablevision and keep it i guess. 120 or 160gb is very, very, very little for hd recording.... i think my sa8300 has like 120 + my 320 and its barely enough, i still need my media center pc for all sd recordings.
danxmanly 02-10-07, 10:06 PM My set up is HDPVR, HD STB, and a Std STB... turned on the multi room feature and home media option and was disappointed beyond belief.
I recorded a hidef show on the pvr, went to watch it on Std box and it said I needed to have a high def box, ( understandable ), so I went to my hidef box and that option to watch it ain't there.
Media music organization was horrid. My media center PC serves the purpose much better with an xbox extender.. but I have to fight the kid for the xbox! LOL So I turned off the multi room feature as it was pretty much useless.
I'm on my second HDPVR.. had the entire service about 4 months now... I knew it would be "buggy" at first and was willing to live with it for awhile. But I'm ready for some major improvements with first and foremost.. something similar like TIVO 2Go where I can transfer recordings to an authorized PC and watch shows. Bigger Hard drive.. and how bout a nicer looking interface.
FiOS DVR interface is really pretty "primitive" ... clumsy to use ... prone to errors and hanging up ... not used to this. I had DISH PVR for the last 4 years and it was a joy to use. Got FiOS a couple weeks ago and it seems like I took a step backwards. :(

Just the opposite view here. Had it installed about 10 days ago coming from Cablevision (I have also had Directv Tivos for many years, and still do).
Cablevision's overall interface, including the DVR, is the definition of primitive. Their graphics are vintage 1970s. Show titles when surfing are cut off after about 6 characters. Show information is cut off with no way to see the rest. Recording options are limited. Going back to a recorded show after stopping means you start at the beginning and FF to where you were. No time on the play bar so you guess where you were. No skip back after FF when hitting play. No ad hoc removal of an eposide from a series. YOu cancel the whole series if you want to not record one episode. Clumsy "A, B, C" options on the remote to navigate rather than arrowing around and hitting select, one week in the guide....should I go on??
The FiOS DVR, I think, resembles the Tivo quite decently in it's operation, options, etc., including the skip back after FF, which was a very pleasant surprise, and grouping recordings of the same show together, similar to Tivo's folders. No bugs here and no missed recordings.
OK - Cablevision wins the "Primitive Award" ... the FiOS Moto box probably falls in line for second place. I have had missed recordings ... hang-ups when fast forwarding (DVR "sticks" for 4 or 5 seconds) ... dropped sound for a few seconds (when rewound, the sound is actually there) ... recordings that get split into two parts ... etc. The DISH box never gave me any trouble and the interface was much cleaner and earier to navigate. But the + on the FiOS side is the PQ ... and the VOD ... I'll wait it out for a while and keep my fingers crossed that software fixes are coming down the road.

Sound like you're confusing the interface and problems with the box. If you have problems with recordings, call VZ and have them replace the box. Have you called tech support? Motoboxes seem to have a high rate of problems. Replacing the box might fix the recordings problem. VZ is also supposed to be rolling out new software which may address your interface issues. On the plus side, your HD picture should be much better than the highly compressed sat HD. Can you comment on this?
Heroinhero 02-11-07, 11:29 PM Has anyone managed to capture video using capDVHS with the QIP6416?
I keep on getting a "Cannot start capture" every single time I click Rec.
Yes - the FiOS Moto box does have problems ... but the user interface is also "buggy" and primitive.
As for PQ ... HD is a BIG step ahead of sat and SD is even noticeably better. I switched from DISH and despite the problems I doubt if I'll ever go back.
Has anyone managed to capture video using capDVHS with the QIP6416?
I keep on getting a "Cannot start capture" every single time I click Rec.
I believe I read somewhere in this thread that every channel on FiOS has the copyright protection enabled(is QAM the right phrase?). So, you will not be able to capture via firewire.
Has anyone managed to capture video using capDVHS with the QIP6416?
I keep on getting a "Cannot start capture" every single time I click Rec.What channels are you trying to record?
On most cable systems, all digital channels but ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC are flagged with DTCP "copy once," which means you won't be able to record them to your computer, which is not an authorized DTCP device. If you want to record other digital cable channels with a computer, you'll need to buy a Vista PC with the OCUR CableCard device (http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2662), once it is released this Spring.
Beyond ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, and the other locals, you should not be able to record any FiOS channels to your PC without the above OCUR (http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2662) device. The same also applies to digital channels in most Comcast markets.
danxmanly 02-12-07, 09:28 AM I have FIOS in Plano, TX. Can record fine via NBC, ABC, FOX, CBS.. but nothing else due to 5C protection flag on... HDNET, HBO, etc... That's just the way it's gonna be for now.
With that said, using capture capabilities of my Nvidia 7800 GT VIVO, Svideo coming out of the box showing a previously recorded highdef show looks pretty decent. Some were concerned that those analog ports were disabled if showing hidef content.. not the case.
I haven't exactly figured out what specific triggers cause audio to drop out, but I have seen it with my configuration. However, resetting the box will restore audio connection for several days. Most reliable way to reset the box has been to unplug the DVHS recorder, but I have also tried uplugging and replugging the firewire cable, unplugging and replugging the DVR, etc. When properly reestablishing handshaking, I have noticed that the D-VHS will RESET the DVR. This is important. Even though the DVR may be still plugged in, proper reset by the D-VHS will reboot the DVR (displaying ----) across the display. I would suggest that you give this a try. It may take many variations of unplugging and replugging at first, but please give it a shot. Since you are in Annandale, please drop me a PM if you want to discuss this further.
I've had my FIOS TV setup for only three days, but I've already run into the problem xradman noted re: no audio when copying QIP 6416 recordings to a DVHS tape recorder. The odd thing is that my first DVHS recording, of an HDNet Movies film, was perfect.
Does anyone have a reliable work around by now?
I'll try to disconnect and reconnect firewire cables, but I hope there is an easier, reliable work around.
jmcging 02-12-07, 10:11 AM FiOS DVR interface is really pretty "primitive" ... clumsy to use ... prone to errors and hanging up ... not used to this. I had DISH PVR for the last 4 years and it was a joy to use. Got FiOS a couple weeks ago and it seems like I took a step backwards. :(
It is a pretty clear fact that DVR technology and interfaces are evolving. I've never seen Dish or Tivo, only had expereince with the implementation Comcast has in my county. (Which seemed different from the DVR implementation Comcast has at my brother in law's house, 2 counties over, guess that's because Comcast bought his old cable company...)
So, coming from Comcast, despite the problems, the Fios DVR is tons way more better, flexible, informative, user friendly. It took just a day to realize that I never want to use the Comcast DVR again. I'm recording series, 30 sec skip, resume where left off, better controls etc. In short, Comcast => Fios was a definite DVR upgrade for me.
Had I come from something better like Tivo, I could understand that perhaps it is a downgrade. Kind of like buying a car, there are tradeoffs. Frankly, every time I look at any of my TVs, the improved picture quality on all my sets is enough to handle any irritations I may have at other aspects of their service.
Not that I wouldn't like for FIOS to implement all the improvements folks have mentioned, and it's folks like you who have experience with oether ways and servcies who can keep the pressure on them to constantly improve.

Does this mean I can record ABC, CBS, FOX and NBC using firewire? Or does everything have to be copied using the Ocur CableCard device? Because I am having troubles copying anything at all.
mike240se 02-12-07, 08:22 PM Just the opposite view here.
Thanks so much for your post, i just ordered fios today and am coming from cablevision. I was worried cause they were saying the dvr was so bad but we both know how bad the SA dvr is from cablevision, it has no conflict resolution for recording! It just wont record a show when it feels like it, doesnt ask or anything. I now feel alot better about switching to fios and getting the hd dvr. My only worry is storage, they said I can add an external hard drive and it works but some one told me on this thread it doesnt work with external drives at all. Is it possible that e-sata does work?

I was afraid of this. I have a dual tuner media center pc so i was forced to order 2 standard fios cablebox's so i could get all the channels recorded on the media center pc. Is it possible firewire will work on the box for non-hd programming on like history and military channel? Otherwise i gotta use the tuners and the 2 boxes. I also got the hd dvr box since its my only option till ocur comes out for hd.

Your best option is the OCUR device mentioned above, once it is available. The History Channel is expected to go high-def this fall, and you'll almost certainly want to record that.

History Hi Def?!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!? You just made my frigan day! Is Verizon going to carry it? Is cabelvision? One of the reasons i left cablevision is that they didnt have discovery hd... So there is a good chance verizon will carry history hd and cablevision wont i bet.
HappyGoLucky 02-13-07, 07:51 PM Just read this on the tivocommunity forum:
No idea. FIOS is not officially supported for the product. FIOS uses CableCard technology, but doesn't submit their systems to CableLabs for certification. So if there's funky stuff with a FIOS system...it's typically something weird that's been done in their implementation of CableCard.
We've had other FIOS issues here and there, but we cannot create special versions of code for each non-standard implementation. Sorry, but I'm going to guess that it's not. Maybe we'll be happily surprised though...let us know.
Thanks,
Pony
If you were planning on buying a Tivo Series 3 for your FIOS installation, you might want to think again. :(
FiOS supports CableCard. The Series3 supports CableCard, and hence supports FiOS.
Please keep in mind that there are a number of S3 users who already have FIOS and that the original question was around an issue where Fast Forward acts a little oddly on just a few channels. It wasn't a statement of complete incompatability.
The Series3 works great with FiOS, aside from some anomalies with some channels on FF3/RW3.
Yes it works very well on the FIOS system.
I've had my FIOS TV setup for only three days, but I've already run into the problem xradman noted re: no audio when copying QIP 6416 recordings to a DVHS tape recorder. The odd thing is that my first DVHS recording, of an HDNet Movies film, was perfect.

I'll try to disconnect and reconnect firewire cables, but I hope there is an easier, reliable work around.
I want to thank xradman for describing a work around for fixing my problems. Apparently every few days the I-link between my JVC 40K tape recording and the QIP 6416 must be re-established. The first symptom is noticable lip-synch problems viewed through the JVC DVHS output. The fix is to briefly pull then reconnect the power cord of the QIP 6416. This causes two disruptions though -- the Verizon guide information needs about 20 minutes to restore, and you obviously don't want to disconnect power during a DVR (or tape) recording.
I am quite satisfied with the work around. Even with the 160 GB storage on the QIP 6416, there is too much good programming I want to capture, especially on HDNet, HDNet Movies and The Movie Channel-HD. Fortunately, I have a large supply of blank DVHS tapes to handle this.
fairnymph 02-14-07, 09:37 PM I just got into this recording from my DVR and have run into the obnoxious 'copy once' issue.
I am on macs, though my husband has a PC (but he does not want to upgrade to Vista until it's been out for a while).
Does anyone know of cards for macs that will be coming out that will enable recording of these encrypted shows? About 1/3 of the shows I watch are SciFi/Universal HD.
I'm also wondering if I can increase the HD space of my DVR in any way. I will be getting an intex xeon g5 mac in the very near future and turning my g4 desktop into a media center of sorts; can that be used to extend the DVR so to speak?
fairnymph 02-14-07, 10:12 PM Err, *intel, not intex.

About 1/3 of the shows I watch are SciFi/Universal HD.Windows Vista is the only CableLabs certified platform right now, which means it is the only OS to currently support this content. Your husband would need to use Vista in conjunction with the OCUR device (http://www.anandtech.com/tradeshows/showdoc.aspx?i=2662), coming soon in both internal and external USB versions.
Unfortunately, Windows XP and the current version of OSX are not going to ever support this content. However, it is very possible that Apple will submit the DRM in the next version of OSX, coming this spring, for certification. Apple tends to be very secretive, so we don't know yet what they are planning. It's probably just a matter of time. I don't think Steve Jobs will allow Microsoft to have exclusive access to this content for long.
I'm also wondering if I can increase the HD space of my DVR in any way. I will be getting an intex xeon g5 mac in the very near future and turning my g4 desktop into a media center of sorts; can that be used to extend the DVR so to speak? The current firmware on the Motorola DVR does not support drive expansion. Motorola is working on updated firmware to support that capability, it's not coming till the second half of this year.
You may want to consider waiting until the next release of OSX this spring to buy a new Mac, just in case it has some new DRM hardware or software to better support encrypted television content.
mike240se 02-15-07, 01:52 AM The OCUR device thats coming soon, they are actually going to sell this seperate from a PC? I heard since they brought it up it wouldnt be sold seperately. Supposively it will only be sold in a new pc? Something to do with cablelabs not certifiying it otherwise.

Supposively it will only be sold in a new pc? Something to do with cablelabs not certifiying it otherwise.Initially, it may only be sold with new PCs. However, the fact that they are demonstrating it as a USB external device seems to suggest that it will be sold independently, or as a package with certain PC hardware, in the not-so-distant future.
I don't know what the hardware requirements are for the final version of OCUR. It may, for example, require that you have a motherboard with a TPM hardware. TPM hardware is required to support the BitLocker drive encryption feature of Windows Vista. Asus recently announced (http://www.dailytech.com/article.aspx?newsid=5836) Intel and AMD motherboards with support for this functionality.
mreading 02-15-07, 09:12 AM I've heard a couple of people mention that Verizon is planning some kind of big software upgrade for this DVR. Does anyone have any details on the upgrade or know when they plan on rolling it out?
I switched from the Comcast Moto DVR to the FIOS one. The software on the Comcast DVR certainly had it's issues, but it was still a step up from Verizon's.

The letter I got implied the remote was also a free upgrade, although it may be a situation where you will have to ask them for it.
personally I could care less about the new remote since I have all harmony remotes in our house. But VZ says it is backlit, and I THINK I remembering it havng the 30 second skip feature so it may be a good upgrade for a lot of people.

"When will it happen?" is the better question. I dunno the answer to that one.
mike240se 02-15-07, 11:52 PM The new guide is very exciting, i am happy to get rid of this crappy cablevision guide. Has anyone at all gotten an e-sata drive to work on this box? I was told on this forum it was not possible but the verizon rep i signed up with said it definetly works and he does it at home so he knows for sure so is it possible some of the newer boxes can? Can anyone confirm a working e-sata expansion?
Also anyone notice verizon changed the fios plans? They are only giving 15/2 for $49 now instead of 20/5? Anyone notice this? It was like $139 on their website for 30/5.

Motorola does not yet have a firmware with functional SATA. They are working on it, but we're not going to see it until the second half of 2007.

It was like $139 on their website for 30/5.In 3-4 states, Verizon has upgraded the 5/2 plan to 10/2 and the 15/2 plan to 20/5 at no additional cost. Upgrades for most of the remaining markets are coming in 2H 2007. They still claim the old speeds on their web page because that's all that they offer in some states.
I have the FiOS 6416 DVR with the Motorola Remote. I'm not happy with the remote because it lacks the 30 second "skip" feature. Which remote would you recommend ... the Phillips (from Verizon) ... the Scientific Atlanta (AT8550 - from Verizon) ... the Comcast universal remote (from ebay) and which one - black or silver? ... or one of the Harmony's (reasonably priced ...ie - "cheap" :D ) ?????????????
FiOS ConVert 02-16-07, 06:31 AM I use the Harmony 880 (I know, you said cheap, but I got mine for a little over $100 on sale) and it is the best solution. Keep an eye on the price engines, it does go on sale at times. I also have the silver comcast from ebay for the other TV and it too is a good remote. The ones VZ offers are junk.

I would recommend the Comcast Silver DVR remote. Make sure it has the white DVR button on it. There is another silver Comcast remote that looks very similar, but is missing that row of buttons.
Does anyone know if a native rate pass thru will be part of the upgrade this summer? I keep debating switching to Tivo, but with a lifetime subscription it would take about 16 years to break even
Thanks,
Bill
AFAIK, The SciAtl AT8550 has no 30sec skip button either (or way to set one up) so ... wouldn't suggest that.

Like all Motorola boxes, the QIP6416 does have a passthrough feature for SD channels, but for HD, you're stuck converting 720p to 1080i or 1080i to 720p. Ideally, 720p and 1080i signals would be output to the display in their original format.
Has anyone else seen a stutter issue with FIOS?? I get this on HD and SD content - different stations. Its like a 1/4 second hitch in the picture maybe every 10 minutes sometimes more sometime less. I had FIOS check the signal but that did not resolve. I am leaning towards this being a DVR issue. It happens even when I am not recording on another channel.
The weird thing is that if I rewind the live DVR and replay I do not see the stutter which leads me to believe its not the TV or the feed - which leaves the DVR.
EZ

Are you having your SD content display as 1080i? To check this, or to change it, turn the box off w/the remote and then hit menu on the remote. You can change how it handles the SD signal. When I have it set to 1080i it causes problems, on 480i or 480p, no problems at all. Had the same problem when I was with Cox(same box more or less).

Umm, thats what I meant. I said to change the SD OUTPUT to 480i or 480p. HD will still be 1080i. Perhaps I had the exact terminology a bit off, was not at my tv.

Try searching Fios related threads about this. This is apparently a common problem of which I am currently suffering as well. Seems to only happen on the HD channels and is quickly noticable when there is a news crawl across the screen. I am on my second DVR box because of this and there is a temporary fix.
Enter the service menu by shutting off the box and hitting the menu button. Change you output to 480i or p or generally just cycle through the outputs and then back to 1080i. It should resolve it for a while. For some reason Verizon CSR's don't seem to know anything about this problem.
The guide has annotations that there will be some channel realignment on 3/6 here in Keller. I wonder if this will be in conjunction with the rumored upgrade ?
Anyone have any info on this ?

This has been ongoing throughout the country, you area is actually the last scheduled channel realignment, here in DC we are changing on 2/20. look in the Fios programming thread for more info/speculation.
Which upgrade re you talking about? its its the guide upgrade then the 2 are totally unrelated, this is just to get all the areas on the same page, and then most likely the addition of more channels, hopefully HD channels.

Just had FiOS installed today. HD looks good, however my SD quality was horrible; channels were blurry and would pixelate like crazy. It was difficult to watch. Thought I was just going to have to stick with Brighthouse because the SD was good...
However, changing the 4:3 override to 480i did the trick. It was on 480P. Now SD content is looking tons better and actually watchable.
For reference, this was on a LG 42PC3D via HDMI
Thanks for the recomendation!

Just want to feel all warm inside :)Their installers and customer service isn't necessarily better, in my experience, but the picture quality certainly is -- it's a clear upgrade over satellite on a larger screen. FiOS' pricing is pretty good too, i.e. just over $40/mo for 200+ digital channels and 20+ HD channels, with more coming very soon.

Glad it worked for you. If the no override would work w/o causing the stuttering, that is the one I would pick. 480p seems to yield the worst quality. The problem with 480i, at least for me is that it puts a faint vertical line from top to bottom along the left edge of the screen. It only occurs at the 480i setting. Most of the time it is not noticeable, but others it annoys me.
mike240se 02-17-07, 05:15 PM There's about 1000 posts in this thread talking about it.
thats exactly the problem, how does anyone have the time to read 1000 posts. thats the reason i avoided this site for so long, it scares me lol

Thanks for your response! Unfortunate, but very helpful. I wish I knew WHEN in spring 2007 leopard is coming out -- 'spring' is so vague. March? April? May? I don't want to wait till May. My (desktop) computer is really on its last legs.

I had comcast cable. I switched to Fios about two months ago. I actually do not think there is a noticeable difference in HD picture quality (I do not watch any SD shows so I cannot comment there). The husband agrees that the picture quality is equivalent.
I think it is a better value (more channels/$, and much cheaper DVR service), and that was part of why I switched, but I primarily switched because of the internet speeds (especially upload -- I have vastly better ratios these days!).

yeah hd is pretty good across the board from what i have noticed but my SD programs that i watch a lot like military channel and history channel are terrible on cable and my friend has great sd quality on his fios connection so i am happy about that.
Yeah the dvr price is much cheaper, at first i thought it was the same till i realized i pay like $13 for the dvr box and $10 for the dvr service.
Oh another thing, i cant believe fios gives all on demand for free! (not ppv of course) history channel, discovery channel, hbo or whoever else has on demand is free, atleast in my area. Cablevision was charging $4.95 to watch a frigan re-run of mythbusters or sopranos. this is a great feature.
arhughes 02-17-07, 11:04 PM I've had my 6416 for a couple weeks now, and aside from the lagged response when using the remote, it has worked really well. Lately I have started to notice a weird problem though.
I set "Monk" up to record as a series, and even though it is setup to tape only at 9pm for new and repeats (since the guide seems to always say its a repeat, even if its new). When I look in the guide on Saturday, it shows that Monk is going to tape at 6pm (rerun of the previous night's episode). When I try to make it not record on Saturday, it also removes the schedule to tape at 9pm on Fridays. Has anyone else seen something like this?
I had a similar problem recording Monk ... I "fixed" it bygoing into the menu for "Series Options" and eliminating the rerun by choosing the setting to record only "New" shows ... and/or the option to record only AE at 9:00PM, etc. Seemed to have solved the problem (at least for this week).
I've found another strange thing happening with my scheduled shows ... I set The Tonight Show to record as a series ... on the guide it shows that it's set to record every night (Mon - Fri). However, some nights it doesn't record. I noticed that it didn't record last Wednesday ... so on Thursday I double checked the guide for that night and it was set to record. Friday morning - NOTHING was recorded. So, again, I checked the listing for Friday night ... it showed that it was set to record ... Saturday morning - NOTHING WAS RECORDED! Anyone else have this happening? Any suggestions as to why it's happening?
fairnymph 02-18-07, 07:31 PM Another question for you pros (I did a thread search but couldn't find what I'm looking for).
I want to be able to play my recorded shows. Unfortunately, even re-encoded in divx, my divx- capable dvd player will not play the shows becuase of the high resolution, I'm presuming. I get audio but no video. But I do NOT want to decrease to 720p -- the whole point of doing this HD recording is to get high res stuff. But I want it to be playable later, without filling up my dvr.
Can I stream through the dvr? How do I do this? What file types are streamable?
HDMaryland 02-18-07, 07:35 PM OK, I like the PQ on Verizon. I have no problem with the service, but the DVR is slowly driving me to insanity.
I should say that I have been a TIVO users since the first unit became available on both cable and D*. Little did I know that other DVRs were so far behind.
This system is an embarasssment. Let me count the ways.
- The unbelievely SLOW response. Press FF and wait. Press jumpback and WAIT. Forget about the 30 second jump, just let me press the button and get a response. The TIVO reacts instantly, I've had this thing wait more than 5 seconds to execute a jumpback.
- The program guide that tells you nothing about the current program. For example, I'm watching Ebert & Roeper, but the info does not list the movies to be reviewed like the TIVO. Last week on Letterman, most of the guests were wrong.
- Program scheduling can take forever, especially with a conflict. You lose all control of the system for 30 seconds -- during which of course you try enter comands. Then they are executed and you are left in limbo. When you go to a series to resolve the conflict, the other showings are not listed, only those scheduled.
- The search that dumps you back to the beginning after you look at a selection and want to go back to the found shows. Also, why do some shows have "The" in the title and some not. TIVO put ALL "The" after the name so you can actually find the show on one attempt.
- The thing crashes when viewing in catch-up mode. A few weeks ago on CSI, when we caught up about 50 minutes in, the thing froze and stopped recording. I used to to this with no problem on the TIVO for years.
To sum it up, I had a decade of TIVO service without a high blood pressure moment, this thing will be the death of me. Why anyone would put this POS on the market as a mature product is beyond me. Then again, it was apparently programmed by Microsoft, the retire the trophy winner of convincing the public that malworking crashbound software is the norm.
Oh well, now to attempt to extend the recording on Amazing Race.
mike240se 02-18-07, 08:05 PM I know how you feel, I was a tivo user since it first came out with the first model. I got it for free from tivo because i sold them at sears. they wanted the employes excited about them to sell them, even got free service! (great box too still works)
Then i upgraded to media center 2005 which has an amazing interface.
Then I went to a cable company DVR, SA, omg what a piece of crap. Its amazing these companies rip us off big time with monthly fees and cant give us descent stuff. I hear this box is better than the SA from cablevision but not that much. In case you hadnt heard, they are saying there will be a big upgrade to the software in the summer, so maybe you can hold on.

This is precisely why I haven't switched yet. I've been using D*Tivo's for 7 years and have lifetime subscriptions (plus their hacked and distributed through the house) on both so they cost me Zero.
I could probably muddle my way through a sub-standard DVR, but the wife would freak.

I thought about doing that, but the previous two weeks were new episodes but the guide said that they were repeats (this past Friday really was a repeat, as indicated). I just don't get why its trying to record the show at 6pm when it is set to record at only 9pm.
I guess I should call Verizon about it.
Has anybody else had the problem where the Widgets stop working until you unplug the box and plug it back in? I hit widgets, it scales the screen but remains only black on the bottom part of the screen. If I hit the up and down arrows on the remote then the up and down arrows on the screen show up, but nothing else.

And we would appreciate it if you left. we know how you feel about Fios from the 30 posts you have made that all have the same 5 paragraphs, its growing old.
Its really annoying to get notified of news posts in the handful of Fios threads just to realize its the same old crap from you.
anyway, any NY guys have any problems with your series recordings and the new channel lineup? We are changing tomorrow, and I hope Verizon is right and my recordings wont need to be redone.

The QIP6416 is by far the biggest POS consumer electronic device I have ever had the misfortune of using.
After 1 year of living with the thing and Verizon/Motorola showing absolutely no desire to make it even a mediocre product I've not figured out what to do.
On one hand, we have the best PQ in the business, on the other hand, we have simply the worst piece of crap DVR ever. I wish the only problems were the ones you listed.
Putting aside the worst user interface in the business and a barely functional DVR, the two things that drive me nuts are:
1) I have to reboot (pull the plug and put back in) the box before dumping out the firewire port--every single time!!!!! Can't even dump two shows in a row without a reboot!!!! Failure to do this will lead to a copy that is jumpy and either has out of sync audio or no audio.
2) When the box is rebooted, it will not let you get to the content that is stored on its very own hard drive until it has updated the program guide. This update takes between 2 and 10 minutes.
If the Series 3 TiVo had a firewire port, I'd be all over it. But it doesn't. So, what a frustrating position:
best PQ/worst POS DVR vs. worse PQ/better DVR.

The Verizon DVR is a significant improvement over the older SARA software I had with Comcast. I'll never go back to scrolling through a guide with 400 channels; I like my Verizon guide with 30-something channels.
We've heard plenty about Verizon's upcoming revamp of their UI, so hopefully the DVR service will become more competitive with the likes of Dish / DirecTV soon.

I don't know. I checked out that Comcast and it seemed more functional. I have problems with this one like I didn't see with the Comcast one. For instance, if I'm on certain stations (e.g. TLC) and pull up the guide and do "page up" or "page down" most of the time, it will freeze the video but not the audio. It stays frozen after I dismiss the guide. The only way to unfreeze the video is to change the channel.
I'm in software and I've not seen a user experience so poorly designed in over 10 years. My wife used to be in software usability, and she can't even think of a more poorly designed UI she's ever seen for this small level of functionality.
We've heard plenty about Verizon's upcoming revamp of their UI, so hopefully the DVR service will become more competitive with the likes of Dish / DirecTV soon.
Given that they have had ample time to fix some of the well known bugs and they have shown zero interest in that, I'm not holding out any hope that they can get it correct. Further, given that they have commited so many well understood user experience errors shows that either:
- They have clueless people in charge of the software (therefore it will not get better), or
- They really don't care how bad the software is (therefore it will not get better)
What I expect is a better look (graphics, etc) but where the rubber meets the road, it will still be crap. I hope I'm wrong. I'm waiting so see if it actually does get better. When it doesn't, I guess I'll just start a mail campaign for TiVo to add a firewire port to their Series 3. :)
Dave
Speqtre 02-19-07, 08:42 PM I've had the Motorola HD DVRs for about 3 years now between Comcast and now Verizon, and although I don't think they're great or even good, I haven't experienced the level of problems you're having Person99.
I don't mean to point out the obvious, but have you asked to have your box switched out for a newer one? It won't change the crappy UI, but perhaps the other problems you're having are due to your particular unit.

We'll finally see the fruits of that labor in a few months.
Anyone with experience using this remote with the 6416 ... does the 30 second "skip" actually jump ahead (like the DISH DVR)? Or does the 6416 still take a loooong time to respond to each push of the button? With the DISH DVR ... you could hit the skip button 5 times and it would immediately jump about 2 1/2 minutes ahead (past five 30 second commercials). Also, does it broadcast a wider signal ... the crappy Moto remote from Verizon has such a limited range (width-wise) that you almost have to be directly in front of it to register.
FiOS ConVert 02-20-07, 06:10 AM I have the QIP6416-2 and use a comcast silver remote. It does skip ahead thirty seconds, albeit with about a 2 second delay after you push the button. I never had Dish, so I can't comment on that. Range seems good as I can hit the unit at a 45 degree angle from about 6 feet away in the gameroom.
cmburke99 02-20-07, 09:16 AM I'm writing to see if anyone has experienced the following problem. Last night, my DVR began recording "Prison Break" at 8 p.m. on Fox. I started to watch the program 37 minutes into recording, anticipating that the recording would continue through to the end while I was watching from the beginning (I've done this pleantly of times before on all sorts of programs with no problem). Unfortunately, it appears that when I began to watch the still-recording program, the recording actually stopped, and I was left, at the end of the day, with only a 37 minutes show. Curiously, on the "saved recordings" list, it said that the show had been taped for the full hour, but, in reality, it had only recorded for 37 minutes. Anyone ever have a problem like this? Like I said, I've started watching still-recording programs countless times and have never run into this problem. Any thoughts?
robmfielding 02-20-07, 09:37 AM I experienced something similar watching the Simpsons the other day. The show was recording and I was watching it in real time. At three minutes in, it froze up. I exited the recording and on live TV, it was frozen as well. Changed channels and went back into the recording. It resumed playing but minutes 3 thru 6 were missing.
Hopefully, these bugs will go away as the new software is unveiled this Spring or Summer. Then new bugs can appear...

fairnymph 02-20-07, 01:52 PM Thanks for the response.
Damn. So I have no way to watch these beautiful hd files on my big screen, unless I want to buy an HD dvd player.
I used VideoRedo (on a pc) to cut out the commercials from the raw .m2t files, and then saved them as .mpeg. The files went from being around 6.7 gigs to around 1.4 gigs. I did not select/use any compression, at least not intentionally or to my knowledge.
On my 17" widescreen lcd computer display, I can't see a difference in PQ between the raw and the altered files, but I'm suspcious about that massive decrease in size. I have no way of really seeing the difference because I can't watch these shows on my TV (none of my comps have video cards capable of outputting in the correct resolution for my 37" 1920x1080 hdtv).
My question is...do you think these .mpegs I've created are going to be just as good quality? I will convert all the captured files and burn them so that when I do buy an hd dvd player eventually they will be playable, but I don't want to do that (and erase all the .m2t files which are taking up so much disk space) if the PQ is going to suck on the big screen.
Any advice/thoughts?

They offshored a bunch of the development to India and ended up with the crap interface and functionality we have been living with. No, that is not correct.
The interface we have now is the MS Foundation Edition (MSFE) 1.7 interface. Comcast began using the same software -- functionally and aesthetically identical to what we have -- in Washington state back in October 2004.
Verizon has spent nearly two years working on a new interface and we haven't seen any of that work yet. But it's coming real soon.
Any advice/thoughts?You could look in the Digital Media Servers & Content Streamers forum:
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=39
Lots of ways to get HD content from your PC to a TV in there ... not via the Verizon DVR of course. But ... depending on your price point / features ... you might find something to do what you want (and give you some extra features too). The market is getting large / interesting / cheap enough ... may be worth a look.
For example ... the D-Link DSM-510 (note, not an endorsement / suggestion ... just picked it out of the air because DLink has been active in the area):

Another product to check out for high-def video playback remotely on your display is the upcoming Netgear EVA8000. Coming in March.
http://www.netgear.com/Products/Entertainment/DigitalMediaPlayers/EVA8000.aspx
fairnymph 02-20-07, 03:08 PM Unless it is less than $50 I'd rather just buy an HD player (in the nearish future) or better yet save up for a divx capable combo bluray/hd dvd player. Since I'm saving now towards a new desktop and after that a stereo system, I can't afford anything more than $50 for this type of thing.
Maybe just getting a video card that can output that resolution would be good, except the comp I am turning into a media center (an 8 year old 400 mhz mac) won't be capable of smoothly playing HD files.
Also I don't need wireless, I'm old fashioned and prefer wires for most things...plus I don't care to pay extra for that feature.

Yes the New Verizon FIOS software is out there. But only in some areas under BETA! I have seen it and it is way better then the MS based FIOS software. One town in South Central PA already has it.....
rosh400 02-20-07, 08:23 PM Whats ugly about his comment?
His comment about Indian programmers implying that is why the software isn't any good. Kind of reminds me when people equated made in Japan with junk. Who has the most advanced hybrid engine technology? Toyota. Who is about to surpass GM as the largest motor vehicle manufacturer in the world? Toyota.
As stated, first of all, we are stuck with the MS developed software, which was not in part developed in India. Second, the quality of whatever replaces it, may or may not have anything to do with where it was developed. Good and bad products are produced here. Good and bad are produced overseas.
I just think its ugly to be quick to say the reason why a product isn't good is because it was developed somewhere outside of the US.

Not to play the apologist for someone else's comments, but I think what he was trying to say was that they just farmed the development out without concern as to its elegance but rather to just get it finished quickly (which I believe is what happened, regardless of who finished it.)

With the Moto DVR STB, the external eSata problem is a motorola STB DRM conflict.
Moto has been working on this problem for about a year now. They hope to have a fix to this problem out by summer 2007 for all MSO that use the DCP, DCH, QIP STB series.
The eSata port will be the only way to add an external HDD to any of the Moto DVR STB.
The Firewire port is for Audio / Video output only (at this Time). The USB ports are for adding external Keyboards and / or a Pointing device (mouse), or to power an external USB device. All for future use! :)

lost0822 02-21-07, 11:22 AM I recently went from Comcast to Verizon last week.
Well up to you yesterday everything was working fine. Got home from work yesterday and for some reason my TV (Samsung HL-S5687) was not showing a picture (using an HDMI connection).....but could hear sound (i have a surround sound system so i have an optical coming out of the DVR box). Unplugged the HDMI and replugged, shut both devices down and turn them back, also tried both HDMI connections on my TV.....but still nothing but the "no/weak signal" remark from my TV.
so then i tried the component connection and that worked fine....picture came right up.
Any suggestion as to what i do?...besides i guess calling Verizon. Seems sort of wierd it would just stop working after a week's time.

Do you have a 2nd HDMI cable you could try? What about another HDMI device you could hook up. This would narrow down to see if it is the box or your tv.
Does anyone know if FioS 2.0 will downconvert HD recordings so they can played on a standard STB on an SD TV in another room. Currently I have to record both the SD and the HD versions just so I have the option of watching it in my bedroom of I so choose.

Interesting question Alon, but to talk about the current issue for a second first: Right now, it's my understanding that you can't do any type of multi-room HD, only SD, even if you had an HD set in the other room. So, the question to be asked first would be, are they going to fix the multi-room HD problem in the next release, and if so, will it then allow down-conversion?
Someone correct me if I'm wrong please..

However, multiroom functionality is planned for the HD STBs later in the year, and you'll be able to stream HD to those.
Person99 02-21-07, 03:31 PM His comment about Indian programmers implying that is why the software isn't any good.
I did not make a comment about Indian programmers. I made a statement about how the software was developed and I made an assertion about its quality (or lack there of). The implication you derived was not there.
I make no claim that software developed in the U.S. is superior to that developed elsewhere (if fact, Japanese IT developed software has on average about 1/10th the number of bugs per 1000 lines of code than IT developed software in the U.S.). Any type of categorical claim about quality is ridiculous.
Now, if you want to talk about the advantages and disadvantages of off shoring to India, I'd be happy to discuss that, but it was not my intention and this is probably not the place. But, since you brought it up, do I personally think it is a bad idea? Of course. How many have been happy with Indian technical support? There is a reason Dell stopped doing it.
People do it to save money. I don't think it is good for America and Americans for a variety of reasons, but the real problem is the savings are not as big as they think. I've seen many many projects sent to India fail because it takes so much more management effort and time to get it right than it does if you have local folks. Personally, I think the current FiOS software is an excellent example of the point. Its functionality violates basic UI standards, it is inconsistent from screen to screen, and certainly lacks the basic elegance anything developed in the 21st century should have. Had it been developed locally in a hurry, I bet it would not be as inelegant as it turned out by developing it off shore in such a hurry.

The DVR was not designed with the ability to record shows off the DVR via Firewire. The Firewire connection that is supported by the STB is to work on a firewire display device (TV / Monitor) So do not expect them to add or change drivers in the STB firmware to fix issues with DVHS or PC connection problems.
With most shows now available via on demand, iTunes, Network Website downloads, DVD within a a short period of time, the need to allow end users the ability to make personal copies of tv shows and movies is no longer a primary concern.
spider12 02-21-07, 04:45 PM I'm sorry if this is listed before, but I didn't see it. Is there a way to tell what audio format is being broadcast on a particular show (DD5.1 or stereo)? Comcast's guide has this right on the show information, but I was wondering if there is a way on this box without getting up to look at my receiver.
Thanks.
Oakisle 02-21-07, 07:00 PM Guys, fios appreciates you all paying to be a beta tester.
Doing the same thing over and over again expecting a different response shows you are insane.
Although I'm still with Dish, I feel this site is very helpful and will continue to see if the problems with FIOS are resolved. At that time I will make the switch.
I have a reason to be here. You seem to have more time than you know what to do with.
Maybe you should go back to spending more time in the Britney Spears chat room. They miss your wit.
I think you will find the angle problem exists at the DVR itself. It's not an issue with the remote. I have a Harmony universal remote, and while the signal is stronger from the remote, there are still angle and possibly distance issues. We sit about 12' away and the box is about 6' up, turned at a slight angle. I have to point the remote directly at the box to be sure to get a response.
Our skip ahead is also delayed like you said. Again, not the remote... it's the DVR.

jwheeler 02-21-07, 09:53 PM His comment about Indian programmers implying that is why the software isn't any good.
I think the point was they outsourced it as opposed to doing it in-house but then again I'm just assuming this. I didn't take it as the programmers did a bad job. By the way it is fact that Japan copied our technology. They have since developed it further but it did use to be inferior.
jwheeler 02-21-07, 09:56 PM Or because how bad fios has gotten?
Do you really have nothing better to do then hang around forums and troll?
FiOS ConVert 02-22-07, 08:10 AM Everything you see on the current FiOS DVR was developed by Microsoft in Washington state. Not in India.
We really have no way of knowing if Microsoft offshored the development of FiOS or not. Until recently, I managed my departments relationship with MS and do know for a fact that they have a large development presence in India. Only MS knows what they send over there. As far as the quality, I managed my company's offshore team for two years and can say that our Indian team produced high quality work. Trust me, I hate the loss of jobs, but they can develop software...

For about a year, we had a member of the development team on this forum that sought feedback from Comcast users on the software. During that time, it was certainly implied that they were working on the software here.
briansok 02-22-07, 03:23 PM I live in NJ and FIOS is now available to me. I am not a big fan of Comcast to say the least. I spoke to a Verizon rep and their service will save me about $25 a month if I use them for phone/internet and TV.
Can someone who has used both services give me some honest feedback comparing the two. I have just read some posts about FIOS that left me concerned.
Also is anyone using their home media product? Not sure if that is the correct name.
thanks

I'm using the home media product. I'm not a big fan of the computer to dvr functionality of it. I do like being able to watch what I record on that DVR in another room though. I use that for when I use my treadmill.

Can you view a program recorded in high def on a non high def tv? Wil in down convert?
No, from personal experience it will not :( Nor does the hardware support this being added as a feature in the future per previous posts here. The work around for a few dollars per month for is to have two DVRs, one in each room and just drop the MultiRoom Functionality. Or record both the SD and the HD version on the MR DVR.
Alon :)
Can you view a program recorded in high def on a non high def tv? Wil in down convert? The DVR will downconvert content through s-video for output to a standard television, but it's multi-room functionality will not stream high-definition to the standard boxes located in other rooms.

Do not let the haters bother you. FIOS is the best vidio or internet going. I also have the phone and have not been able to tell the difference between it and my previous provider.
My father in law had comcast on his dlp and switched to FIOS it was night and day difference.
Anyone have a clue how to get past the automated phone tree to a real LIVE CS person? I've done the "loop" on the phone tree and keep getting dumped ... either disconnected or transfered to a number where I get the message "the number you are calling - (716) 890-5736 - is not in service at this time". WHAT THE .... ????? I called Verizon at (888) 553-1555.
If this is an example of their CS ... then I'll definitely dump them and go back to cable! They'll have wasted about 8 hours of a tech's time doing the installation a couple weeks ago!
I had fios for 6 days and decided to stay with comcast....for now at least. I thought hd pq was the same while sd pq was slightly better with comcast (i compared both on a mits 73713).
The dvrs are very similar but i like comcast's UI a little better (mainly because there is no program info when browsing the 'favorites' channel guide with fios (I use favorites alot for setting up recordings). Hdd space goes to fios (160 v 120) but since i also use the sony dhg hdd500 that wasn't a great benefit for me). I do wish comcast had a search by actor feature like fios however. I guess you can't have everything.
I thought the phone service and internet service were identical (speed and quality). The bottom line for sticking with comcast for now was the package price for all channels, hd dvr, cablecard, internet and unlimited phone - comcast $149 per month... fios $197 per month. For me, it just isn't worth $600 per year to get hdnet, wealth tv hd and TMC HD.
I'm sure in time fios will get more aggressive and I might go back. I'm also curious to see if comcast and fios will add hd networks like D* is planning. I probably would have stayed with FiOS if comcast didn't decide to add NGCHD and A&E HD. I wonder if comcast will continue to add content like the competition. Only time will tell. At least I'm now set up for both fios and cable (and still have my DBS stuff on the roof). I doubt if I'll ever go back to D*. Funny, 10 years ago I said the same thing about comcast... I guess ya never know.
It sure is nice though to finally have DECENT choices!!!!

mike240se 02-25-07, 07:04 PM In reply to the post above about some people testing the new verizon software, my neighbor has fios, just got it in northern nj, i am waiting for the install next week. I was over his house and they had a new remote that the guy brought them this week when he brought them the box he forgot when he did the install (the dvr box)
the tech said the remote is brand new and showed him that it doesnt match the picture of the remote in the help guide. i only checked the system out briefly but it was extremely fast to respond and seemed real solid. Can you do series editing on the current fios software? His can do it and i was happy about that since the cablevision box cant even do that. maybe you can help me figure out if he actually has the new stuff, a link to a pic of your remote?

yep, he has the "new" philips remote and the older/current software. is the rc144 the remote that is going to be coming out in the summer to work with the new software as people are saying? i cant believe people are complaining about the current firmware atleast it has series manager, the sa hd box from cablevision cant do that nor can it resolve conflicts or anything, it just does what it wants.

Unless Comcast internet service has improved alot over the past year, there is no comparison. I've had FIOS internet since 12/05 and don't have any problems, not a one. Comcast never provided the advertised bandwidth, took 3 months to admit that my low speeds were there issue and finally replaced the cable from the pole to my house. Even then, the top down speed I ever got was about 3.6 and I was paying for 6. VZ is 15 down, 1.8 up everytime I test.
As far as TV, even if the quality was the same, VZ offers more channels for a lower price and most other cable subscribers who've switched say that the HD is about the same in PQ but SD with VZ is better.

In my area comcast internet speed is very good and fios was not noticably faster. Verizon tv may be cheaper but as a package in my area (phone/internet/tv) comcast is $50/ month cheaper. I tryed to negotiate a better deal with verizon but they wouldn't budge.
Fios tv pq is excellent but is not better than the pq I'm getting from comcast. I'm sure that also varies across the country. I'm also sure that in time when comcast is starved for bandwidth, fios pq will be better as comcast pulls a D* and downrezzes to hd lite.
Hopefully by then FiOS will offer a more competitive package price.

mike240se 02-26-07, 12:39 AM oh i have been meaning to ask, does fios block any ports? port 80, 25, 5060? Also do they do the stupid upload bandwith cutting that cablevision does if you do lots of sustained uploading? also how often do the addresses change? like cable, rarely? or like dsl where they change often, weekly or monthy.... I asked the rep all this when i signed up and of course they said i dont know.

If by the Comcast package, you mean the triple play, I think that price is good for a year and than it will go up significantly. At that point, the "deal" offered by Comcast won't be any deal at all.

That's what someone told me last year when I switched from D* after 10 years and comcast saved me about $1500. They offered me internet, all tv channels and an hd dvr for $69.95 per month for 12 months. So far, comcast is the only provider to save me big money 2 years in a row. I think by next year verizon should be with that program. We'll see...............

Pay the extra $10 a month for business and you will not have any ports blocked.
I have not had any problems with my business accounts on upload or download limits. However I just switched to the Dynamic IP service from the static service this week.

fstepczk 02-26-07, 08:58 PM I am trying out the Verizon FIOS TV service using the 6416 box with component output to a LG HDTV set. I also have the Time Warner cable Moxie 6412 box connected to the same LG by component cables.
On the FIOS system, I am getting my SD channels stretched when the LG is in wide mode. My output is 1080i, TV set set at 16:9 and 4:3 override at 480i.
The Moxie 640 box does not stretch my SD signals when it is set to 480i.
I tried setting all the other FIOS system 4:3 override options, but each had its own problems.
I have contacted Verizon techical support several times with no answers. Does anyone have any suggestions? I would like to switch to FIOS, but do not want keep resetting the LG to 4:3 for any SD channel and "wide" for HD channels.
Is there some difference between the 6412 and 6416 when using component interfaces?
greendog99 02-26-07, 09:56 PM I've had DirecTV w/ DTivo for about 5 years and have been quite happy. I've been looking into HD options recently (Northern Virginia) and my choices are DirecTV, FIOS, or Cox. I currently have Cox for internet and telephone.
I just signed up for FIOS HDTV and internet, install set for March 9, which will be $1 less per month than DirecTV + Cox, but gets me HDTV instead of SDTV.
I have a question after reading some of the recent posts about downconverting HD content. In my setup today, I have my DTivo in my main family room, hooked to a 50" Plasma. I also have the composite video out going from the DTivo into a ChannelVision modulator (set to channel 65) which feeds back into the coax distributed through the house. Then, in the other rooms of the house, I leave the TVs in those rooms set to channel 65, and I can watch what's on the DTivo. Throw in some PowerMid IR repeaters, and I can control the DTivo from the other rooms. This works out well since I rarely have a need to watch different programming in different rooms at the same time.
When FIOS arrives and I replace the DirecTivo, will the FIOS HDDVR still output SD through composite jacks so I can continue this trick? Or will I need to get extra receivers and do the multi-room drv plan from FIOS?

If the tv is set to wide mode the sd signal will be stretched (not sure why the moxi doesn't ). If you don't want the sd signal stretched, set the tv to 'normal' . The hd signal should automatically fill the screen while sd stuff should remain boxed. From your post it sounds like the moxi is doing something wrong.

You mean the one that appears to use the new channel line-up for CA on Verizon's website at http://www22.verizon.com/content/fiostv/channel+lineup/channel+lineup.htm? The line-up is available as a PDF file, so you can download and/or print it.

Thanks, that wasn't there earlier.
Doesn't look like anything has really changed. I had hoped they were actually adding channels (especially HD). It looks like they just shifted and consolidated numbers to make room for future channels.

If you look through the FiOS programming thread you will see that they are re-aligning all parts of the country so that the national channels match up. The thought/rumor is that shortly after this is achieved in early March there will be more national hd stations added.

Anyone figure out what changed (or got fixed) in the new build? GIOS 17.24 / Guide 1.3.19 was pushed to my boxes today.

The only thing I can see ...
3xFF and 4xFF seem to work a little better. 4xFF used to drop me to the end of a show very early (like ... 25 minutes into a hour long show) making it mostly useless. Now it seems like I can use 4xFF to get pretty close to the end of a show without it actually hitting the end ... making the higher FF speeds more usefull.
But ... perhaps it's my imagination. Nothing much else jumps out.
Was the Language setting there before? I don't remember that.
I recently purchased an AOC 22LVWk. This is a PC monitor, but according to the product info, "It is also HD 720p/1080i compatible so it will work with Cable, Satellite, and other Set Top Box equipped with DVI-HDCP."
So I have an HDMI to DVI cable. I hook it up and I get a great picture for 1 second and then 3 seconds of static. It goes back and forth between static and picture.
Any ideas? I called tech support and they asked if my TV was on channel 3... LOL.
I can use this cable and it works fine with my Olevia 27" LCD.
Is this DVR not HDCP compliant?

The remotes that have been deployed by Verizon are shown here:
http://www22.verizon.com/content/fiostv/customer+support/customer+support.htm
The 'newest' one that people are aware of is the Philips RC 144:

There's alot of people with the 'new' Philips remote and the older/current software.
Any idea if there is going to be an upgrade to the guide/screenshot of upgraded guide? I can't stand the current guide which only shows the first couple words of a title as well as the large amount of generic descriptions for shows. I mean how hard is it to have current episode information for each show?

I'm wondering if there was anything in the new code for the change in Daylight Savings Time. Not sure.

Ok ... after playing around a little with GIOS 17.24 / Guide 1.3.19 last night ...
No clue what was changed. 3xFF and 4xFF seem about the same as before. "Daylight Savings Time bug fix" seems about as good a guess as any. Who knows ...

http://us.tnpv.net/2007/VER200701/FiosTV_Demo_01.mpg
In case the direct link doesn't work ... this is available at Verizon's news -> videos page:
http://newsfeed.verizon.com/Videos?model=&kw=@&page=1
This was shown at CES when Verizon announced the new software. Mostly empty marketing quick-cut kindof stuff ... but:
1:05 - 1:08 - new VOD screenshots
1:08 - 1:13 - new guide screenshots
1:13 - 1:23 - new widgets screenshots
If they deliver what's in the video ... looks pretty cool. Still get some titles cut off (for example, there's a 1/2 hour "International Dan ..." show). But ... the 'mouse-over' effect in the guide to get full episode info / description looks interesting.
Of course ... the screenshots (above) and video are just marketing materials so ... the end result may certainly differ.as well as the large amount of generic descriptions for shows. I mean how hard is it to have current episode information for each show?Guide data is only as good as your guide data provider. Yes ... DVR functionality is very dependant on guide data so ... hopefully Verizon is working with their guide data provider to clean this up.
Verizon's guide data provider seems to be FYI Television:
http://www.fyitelevision.com/
UDigTV offers an online guide based on FYI Television's guide data and ... it matches what I see in the IPG:

This article mentions "a lot of data integrity work" so ... hopefully that may translate to better guide data ...
Verizon Takes FiOS to Next Level with IP Apps, New UI

The carrier is “devoting a lot of data integrity work” to metadata, the textual information associated with each video or music file that translates to the text in the program guide and also provides the structured data required for smart linking. The Interactive Media Guide employs the CableLabs Asset Distribution Interface, or ADI, standard to ensure accuracy and uniformity in metadata applied to spelling, category and other guide data as well as to pricing and other information crucial to service selection. However, my understanding of ADI is that it's a VOD thing so ... maybe not.
I am considering switching to VZ FiOS soon and would like to integrate it into my HA system. I've searched but can't find any information regarding IP or serial control of the Motorola boxes. Can anyone help me or point me to a discussion about it?
Primarily I am looking for basic control - channel selection mostly - but would also like some feedback as to what's playing, time remaining, or other information that can be found.
Anyone?

There are some selectable / controllable RF/IR extender products out there on the market. Ie, stick the boxes away in a closet and the RF/IR extender (via discrete remote code) allow you to swap (control) between them. But, I haven't used any of them and don't keep up with that market so ...

hammerash 03-01-07, 01:44 AM I am thinking of switching to fios. I looked at boxes and have tried to ask tech but they don't know much. Does anyone know if the HD outputs (component video and HDMI) and the analog 480i outputs (composite video and S video) can be used at same time? the reason I ask is because I have a slingbox and wanted to be able to feed the 6416, via the composite video, into it. I didn't want to have to change the output on cable box to 480i everytime I wanted to use slingbox. this would mean doing so before I left house and then setting it back when I return.
Also, is there a way to have the TV signal pass through box in its native resolution and have my TV do the scaling? Aren't the TV's better at doing this?
lastly, verizon told me that this could output 1080p. i saw some mention of that somewhere but several places show max being 1080i?
Thanks

i'm currently able watch either HDMI or component and 480i at the same time via svideo...i can't to HDMI and component at the same time.
the box has a 4:3 passthru setting that will let your tv scale or let the box upconvert everything for you by turning it off.
i think it will be quite awhile before we see 1080p from cable...they were probably trying to tell you that it would work on a 1080p tv or something like that.
Also, is there a way to have the TV signal pass through box in its native resolution and have my TV do the scaling? Aren't the TV's better at doing this?Unfortunately, there is no way to pass through 720p and 1080i signals; you've got to convert to one format or the other. However, you can pass through SD signals -- turn the box off, hit menu to get the setup screen, and set the 4:3 pass through setting to 480i.
lastly, verizon told me that this could output 1080p. i saw some mention of that somewhere but several places show max being 1080i?No, but it can output 1080p channels flagged as 1080i, just like you get from a HD-DVD or Blu-ray player set to output 1080i. You can read more about how this works in my post right here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9896981&&#post9896981).
surffishgolf 03-03-07, 11:56 AM There is a nationwide problem with the Multi-Room DVR feature of FIOS. I am one of the people suffering from this issue. The problem is the STB will not always show the "Recorded TV" option on the menu. You can only watch shows on the DVR itself. danxmanly 03-04-07, 11:10 AM I had the multi room DVR at first but disconnected the svc due to it not being up to par. Mainly the fact that I couldn't watch anything recorded in hidef over the network. I have a std box in my son's room and you can't view hidef content on that. And my hidef, ( non pvr ) stb in my bedroom doesn't have the option to watch any recorded shows off the pvr.
Everybody is soooo freakin' concerned about viewing hidef content that the consumers are getting screwed. Between 5C encryption, AACS on HDDVD / Bluray, you name it, we'll probably never see the full potential hi definition.
All I really want is a larger hard drive and see ANY recorded show on ANY box in my house. Is that too much to ask?! :D

That is correct, you cannot use the video inputs. You could purchase an RF Modulator or video switch, this would allow you to have multiple inputs into the one input on your tv.
I have seen a few posts on here regarding the multi-room DVR not functioning correctly lately. I had a co-worker who had this problem, Verizon came out to look at it, the tech said that it was a problem with the latest software update on the boxes. It has affected about 1/2 the customers and they don't know when a fix will be implemented. When he asked about a credit they said they would not issue credits because it should be down for less than 30 days...umm, I don't care if it is down for only a day, they should be issuing a partial refund.
I checked my multi-room DVR and it is not working this morning. Since I only use this in 1 room I am contemplating having them switch out the SD STB for another DVR. I had not done this because I was waiting for the multi-room to work on HD boxes as well, as I have one of those. But for $1 more a month I could have a functioning DVR that does not rely on a technology that obviously still needs some work.
Don't get me wrong, I am overall happy with Verizon. The PQ is far superior to their competition here, but if there was a problem, even for a day, the competition would issue a partial credit.
sweetbabylee 03-08-07, 09:58 AM When I was told about the firmware problem, I asked how long before a fix and was advised they did not know. I asked for a suggestion since I am paying for DVR service and not able to watch on the remote boxes without resetting the main box everytime and I was advised to have all my boxes replaced with the DVR box and have my account credited. Then when the fix comes they would change the boxes out. So I now have multiple DVR boxes throughout my house, gratis.
Not only do they have the best PQ, but the best customer service, taboot!! :D

Out of curiosity, how long did it take them to come out and swap the boxes, am thinking about calling after work today to get this done if Recorded TV is not showing up on the SD STB when I get home.

Just had a chance to call verizon today about "recorded tv" option not showing up on the sd boxes. They had me turn off all boxes with the remote and unplug the HD multi room dvr. After the clock reappeared they sent a soft reset to all boxes. This worked for my setup.
If it wasn't for the higher quality picture I would have went back to cable. I hope they can come up with a way to give us multi room HD dvr capability. Probably not, between the nervous studio's and the limitation of rg-6u cable.
mbdot10 03-10-07, 07:59 AM I have been using my QIP6416 DVR with a Harmony 880 which allowed for a 30- second skip on recorded shows. This week the 30 second skip disappeared.
Harmony tech support believes my remote is functioning normally and has reprogrammed my remote to send the skip command from both soft and hard keys. When the QIP6416 DVR receives the skip command, the LED that lights upon receipt of an IR command glows very slightly. All other keys are working including the replay command.
Harmony believes that Verizon has updated the firmware of the QIP6416 DVR and has removed the skip function.
Has anyone else experienced the loss of the 30 second skip?
How do I check the date of the latest firmware update?
Verizon will not confirm that they have updated the firmware.

Follow up question, are you in one of the areas that is testing the new guide? If you are, then it is possible they removed it from that version of the software.

In cablevison country LI NY - also lost 30 sec skip feaure about a week ago. Also lost the picture portion of the guide on the STB box. Appears they are doing something with the programming. Maybe in prep for new software - or trying to get their multi room playback working. Hope they return the skip feature.

I had the same multiroom DVR problem that kes601 and eddiscus reported. I was not able to see a "Recorded TV" option on my remote STB's.
I powered down all the STB's and the ActionTec broadband router that they gave me. I waited half a minute then powered the router back up, then the main DVR, then the STB's. That fixed the problem for me.
chumley 03-10-07, 08:53 PM RE: NY area loss of 30 sec skip feature. I have the "new" remote, ordered it from Verizon two weeks ago. When I fist received it the 30 sec skip worked fine - until earlier this week. Also tried resetting the boxes which did not work. Btw the new remote is very good - would be great if they didn't drop the page and day forward capability for the guide. "give a little - take a little"
Check out the Comcast silver remote (really cheap on eBay). Be careful - there are two models ... the newer one has 3 extra buttons in the upper 1/3 section. The newer one has the page up/down and day forward/backward buttons. It has the 7 second backwards skip and you can program an unused button to do the 30 second forward skip.

I happened again to me last night and its getting annoying. I'll call verizon to complain but from what I'm reading I think that's not going to get me very far.
I've only had it for a couple months but the multiroom feature is still worth the hassle for me. It is just too cool to stop a show downstairs and resume it upstairs. After waiting for two years for DirecTV to deliver that feature it's nice to get it finally from FIOS.
Gerryex 03-11-07, 01:27 PM Hi ALL,
The time on my FiOS DVR did not change last night. While the programming grid seems correct, the time is off by one hour. So they didn't correct for the start of DST.
Is anyone else seeing this?
Thanks,
Gerry
The time was correct on my STB's. In fact, it was about the only device that had the correct time on it.
BigTunaTim 03-11-07, 01:47 PM The time on our 6416 DVR did not change either.

I take that back... just noticed that the time is one hour ahead, not behind. The DVR apparently skipped forward 2 hours last night.

I checked mine first thing this morning (5:00am) and it had already jumped ahead an hour. When I returned later in the afternoon, it jumped yet another hour. Tried to reset the box and it still reads an hour ahead so it looks like something needs to be checked in their office.
dbrown1971 03-11-07, 11:39 PM I currently have Comcast with the 6412 III. I am considering switching to FIOS as it is now available in my area (Montgomery Co, Maryland). I am having a lot of problems lately with bad/weak signals and some channels having terribly distorted sound or not coming in at all (the dreaded "this channel will be available shortly").
I've read hundreds of posts about Fios and Comcast and the Moto DVRs. I'm wondering if my problems are more a function of the DVR or my provider. I used to have DirecTV with Tivo, and I loved it. What I loved was that every channel always came in, the sound and picture was always crisp and the Tivo functionality was flawless. Unfortunately I can't get DTV where I live now.
I've read lots about picture quality, SD and HD, with Comcast and FIOS. I'm more concerned about making sure the channels I subscribe to come in consistently, without distorted sound or picture break up on the high def channels. Is FIOS any better, or am I going to have the same problems using their Moto box? Any thoughts?
robmfielding 03-12-07, 08:49 AM Is FIOS any better, or am I going to have the same problems using their Moto box? Any thoughts?
I live in Kensington, MD and have had FIOS since Jan 1, 2007. I had DirecTV for years and have tried Comcast several times in the past. I find the FIOS to be very reliable and have virtually no picture breakup using their Motorola DVRs. (I have seen very occasional pixelation on HD locals during bad weather). So far so good. I was also very happy with my DirectTivos but did not like DirecTVs migration path to HD. No Tivo (bad dvr), new dish, two year contract. I have been happy with FIOS. The DVR is supposed to get a new interface in the next few months. If that's good and they had more HD channels I will be very happy with FIOS. I do really miss Tivo and may consider get the Series 3 if the price comes down.
One afterthought:
Billing and installation with Verizon has been not so smooth for me and others, it may be getting better but be prepared to make phone calls to get things right. It is their real Achille's Heel right now.
surffishgolf 03-12-07, 10:25 AM I actually unplugged/replugged the STB that is the MultiRoom DVR and it has been ok the last couple of days....
Yes, thanks for the info. I cycle power on the DVR on a daily basis to fix the problem (and I've cycled the power on the router and the two 2500 STBs at various times too). This is no way to run a railroad. They still have a software issue obviously. I think I'll attach the DVR to an X10 module so I don't have to walk down to the basement everyday (it seems to work for about 24 hours after every power cycle).
At least they fixed the DST issue during the day on Sunday. Way to think ahead Verizon. The new rules have only been in effect since mid-2005.
fmtrojan 03-12-07, 04:57 PM My DVR skipped ahead 1 hour to the correct time, but then at 1pm yesterday it jumped ahead an hour again. It's still ahead 1 hour.
BigTunaTim 03-12-07, 07:24 PM When I turned on the local news just now (NBC5 Dallas), they were in the middle of saying that Verizon is working on the problem and that it should be corrected very soon if it hasn't already.
Mine's still running an hour fast, so we'll see...
greighn 03-12-07, 08:24 PM dbrown1971,
I just had a Comcast service call because I started getting the "this channel will be available shortly" message. The tech replaced a cable from a splitter to the cable box and problem solved. Also, my other box never experienced this problem. You may want to check your cables in case one has become loose or is making poor contact. It seems a bad connection can cause you to lose some but not all of the digital channels. I was missing about 10 before the service call.

Follow up question, are you in one of the areas that is testing the new guide? If you are, then it is possible they removed it from that version of the software.
I spoke with a high level contact the other day.
I was advised that the 30 second skip and the multiroom DVR issues are part of the same software patch they sent out. They sent out this upgrade and stopped it shortly after when they realised it was causing major issues. But not before allot of us got hit.
They are working on it unfortunately I was told they overwrote the old firmware so they cannot go back to it.
The Issues is at an extremely high lever with Verizon as far as getting fixed, although they could not give an ETA on repair.
But they said the 30 sec skip and the DVR issue will be working normally soon.
siersema 03-12-07, 10:08 PM Just a question that I did not see an answered yet. Can you get two DVRs and have Multi-room on both so you can share either unit with the other? For example; right now I have D* with one SD DVR in the media room and one in the bedroom. I can not share between them at all, so I have some programs duplicated. I was wondering if the multi-room was set up, could I get recordings from the media room up to the bedroom or the opposite?

The way the current version of the Multi-Room setup works, you can only view content on a SD set-top box. You cannot view the content on a HD set-top box, or on another DVR. this prevents you from sharing content between two DVRs, as well. From what I've heard, this might be available in the future, but there are no guarantees.
danxmanly 03-13-07, 11:13 AM I'm not sure what to think of Verizon service when they can't even do a daylight savings time adjustment properly. Everything is basically on eastern time.. 1 hr ahead on my hi-def and std boxes, but shows up correctly on my hi-def pvr.
Geeze I hate being beta testers for the moto box and fios.. but the picture does look oh so sweet! LOL
greighn 03-13-07, 11:56 AM I wouldn't read too much into the DST issue. I work for one of the largest companies on the planet with a huge IT staff and we had problems with last minute JAVA updates breaking software, patches missing, etc.
This is more a symptom of the whole software industry than any one provider.

It's a symptom of last year's congress bowing to retail interests who seem to be the only beneficiaries of the early shift to DST. Also apparently the Golf industry will rake in a couple of extra hundred million. Okay, I'm off my soap box now.

Over the last year or so with FiOS TV I have come to realize that Verizon is a phone company and not a cable company.
I had a co-worker who called about the Multi-Room DVR problem last night. There seems to be another workaround instead of power cycling the DVR...
Just go to VOD and select one of the free videos, somehow this resets something in the DVR and should make the Multi-Room feature kick back on. She was told that since she called she would get a credit until it is fixed.
I got a different answer from Verizon tech support. They had me cycle the power on my Actiontec router, then they "refreshed" the box. My tech support person said that this has addressed the problem for 8 out of 10 people he has helped. He emphasized a couple of times that they are working with Motorola to identify and fix the problem for good.
bobc_NJ 03-15-07, 08:03 PM Hey, My First Post! :)
I press the widget button and re-enter my Zip on the remote STB and then the 'Mr Recordings' reappears on the menu. It seem like most of the ad-hoc solutions given are just getting the STB to communicate with the router so it recognizes it. But whatever works!!!

I have tried everything to no avail,
I spoke to my contact again and was advised it should be up and working with a software fix by wed 3/21 at the latest.
it should resolve the multiroom DVR issue along with the 30 second skip.
They are also currently working on the HP/HDMI audio issue
sulfuric 03-16-07, 04:22 AM The problem with the clock was only in texas and california. And it was because some buddy thought it would be a great idea to switch the systems that control the set top boxes in those states the day before the daylight savings time issue. I took them the better part of the day to push out the fix that corrected it. The funny thing about it was, they actually had it right the first time. Now for the multi room dvr issue. the main problem with that was, they pushed out a firmware update to the boxes, and amongst other things. the problem with the update is that the boxes no long ping the router. Before the update the boxes use to send pings back to the router to let the router know they were online. Now they don't so it times out. They are working to release a new update, but there isn't a time frame. The two fixes are this. Reboot the actiontec router or the dlink router and nim. play a free vod from the 6416, then do the same from each 2500. All you're doing is reestablishing a connection with the router via moca. That fixes works roughly 70% of the time. Mostly when the problem first starts, its a good way to get it back. The other is to turn off all the set top boxes. power cycle the router. Then turn the 6416 back on, wait for the clock to come back. Then do the same with each 2500. This reestablishes the 6416 as the hub, and allows the 2500s to find it again. Hope that helps you guys out. My personal guess on the fix is within a week. Also they are issuing credit for the MRDVR for the month, since it was an ongoing issue.

I don't have a MRDVR, so it isn't an issue for me. However, it seems the router has a timeout that "forgets" the DHCP table after a certain (very short) amount of time. I had the same problem with my PCs, as well. Pinging the PCs usually brought them back into the list.
I wonder if the same thing would work for the MRDVR. Perhaps someone could try pinging the boxes from a PC, and seeing if that restores the function.
chumley 03-16-07, 01:00 PM For 'scocoh' and others in the ny area - are the Verizon Video on Demand commercials SIGNIFICANTLY louder than the program content and other material to the point that you have to lower the volume.
I'm in LI, and I also lost the 30 second skip last week. Glad to hear I'm not going crazy.

i was told everyone would get the $7 credit automatically on their bill until it is fixed

We started having a problem with the 30 second skip too starting about a week ago. But it is intermittent, sometimes works during the same recording and then doesn't all of a sudden.

Look in the FiOS Programming thread in the HD Programming section for a discussion about this.
Yes, all the areas that have VZ inserted commercials are experiencing this. And its really annoying.
