I have a Motorola HD cable box from Cox. Has a silver remote. None of the ONKYO remote codes I can find online work with the cable box remote. I have the ONKYO TX-SR503 receiver. Anyone have any idea what the new code is?

I have the exact same problem, same components except my cox box is SA 8300 HD DVR. The remote is silver with blue cox lettering on the bottom, has PIP functionality. I am sure it is same as yours.

I would like to add the AV receiver functionality to the cox remote. If this is not possible, I may go to some universal learning remote, but I am not sure they can fully emulate the COX interactive DVR remote w/ guide.

Did you find a solution? Anyone know of a learning remote that can copy the full functionality of the COX remote?

The wife cant handle the 2 remotes. I'm dead in the water without a solution. Any help is appreciated.

Dang this is not good. I'm kind of in the same boat with my 603. I even called Cox and spoke to a very knowledgeable lady for abt 30 mins and couldn't come up with anything..

Yes I found a solution, finally!

I have the SA 8300 HD/DVR box from Time Warner Cable. The remote is made by Universal Remote. I called this company and they basically told me to send in my remote and they could re-code it (basically replace a chip inside) so it would have the appropriate code (536) for my Onkyo receiver.

It was a free service...I paid a few dollars to ship it to them and had it back in about 2 weeks. The thing works perfectly now.

Hope this helps.

My silver cox cable remote for the DCT6412 wont work for my Oknyo 503 either. I used every code I could find, I even tried to let my remote scan, with no luck. I did get my Oknyo remote (RC-607M) to do most everything I need except, I can't find any button that performs - info (for the cable guide and etc.). I didn't realize how much I use that damn function.
Also I can't find a DVR LIST button either.

Code 0135 should get you power ON and VOL, code 0842 should get you OFF command.

You can program the AUD with code 0842, keymove the OFF command to another key, then reprogram with code 0135.

I can't get any of those to do anything.
Here is the remote I have BTW.

Im pressing aux, then holding setup (until aux blinks x3) then entering the code. But neither volume or power off (or on) works.

Anybody ever solve the issue with the proper code for the Cox Remote in order to control an Onkyo S790?

I'm having the same problem try to control my Onkyo TX-SR600.

I've tried the two codes that Edmund posted (0135 and 0842) but neither one was accepted by the remote. I noticed that he mentioned a AUD button. My remote doesn't have that. Mine has AUX, DVD, TV, CABLE. I think Edmund may have a different model of the remote.

Anyone have another suggestion?

I have the same receiver, the Onkyo 503. I'm trying to program the included remote to control my TV and DVD player but none of the codes in the printed list that came with it seem to work. Also, in the instructions it says that the remote mode button should blink twice after entering a code, but it doesn't do that, it just stays lit.

My TV is a Philips 30PW8420, the DVD is a Samsung HD-860.

Same problem here with an Onkyo 604. I've called both Cox and Universal Electronics (the maker of the remote) to no avail. I will probably buy a "All for One URC 8820" from Amazon to replace the Cox remote. It's only $14!!!

Update: I bought the URC 8820 from Amazon for $14. It has a similar key layout as the Cox remote because they are made by the same company. However, it lacks a few Cox-specific buttons -- namely "Page+" "Page-" "A" "B" and "C". So I programmed "|<<" and ">>|" on the URC 8820 for Page+ and Page-, then the lowest left 3 keys as "A" "B" and "C". (The URC 8820 learned these keys from the Cox remote.)

The URC 8820 has codes for Onkyo receivers, but none is fully compatible with my 604. Some codes turn on the receiver but not turn it off. Others would turn off but not turn on. Weirdest thing. I solved it by picking a code (1298) that works with the 604's volume functions, then re-programmed the "Power" button from Onkyo 604's remote.

Now I have a remote that looks similar to the Cox remote and works with my Onkyo (and other devices, DVD, TV, etc). For just $14!!! I'm happy. :-)

Depending on how much you like tinkering, you might want to look into JP1.2 cable for your new remote. The cable will allow you to program the remote in more advanced ways. If interested, you can learn about it here:

http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/index.shtml

Most of the site is about JP1 interface, which is older, but still current UEI remotes. The URC-8820 is one of the newer "JP1.2" remote, but most of the info at the site applies; just the cable is different (more complicated, slightly more expensive. JP1 cable will not work with JP1.2 remotes, and visa versa), but you still use the same software and configuration files.

BTW, the COX remote that is shown above looks a lot like the Comcast remote that I have, and there a chance that it's also a JP1.2 remote (or maybe a JP1 remote). If the battery compartment has a slot with 6 pins (2x3), you may be able to program that remote with the cable as well. Unfortunately, no one has yet made a config file for the Cox remote, so you may have to get someone's help over there to create one. The experts there are very helpful, though. With their help, I've been able to program my Comcast remote to work as an MCE remote on the AUX setting, and added setting to work with my TV which it did not have in it's built in list of TV codes, and even added functions that my TV's original remote did not have.

Looking in the battery bay, I see my Cox remote is a "JP1.1" remote. Not sure if I want to spend another $14 and unknown hours to fix the Cox remote. (The JP1.x cable seems to work better with JP1.2 than JP1.1 at the moment.) Thank you very much for the info though. I didn't know the Cox remote is user re-programmable.

Maybe NEXT Christmas... :)

so no-one ever solved the onkyo remote code mystery?
does Universal Remote recode the COX branded remote controls?

I'd also like to know if anyone has input here. I also have the DCT6412 and an Onyko 504. The 0135 & 0842 allow for power ON and volume (both ways), but not OFF.

code 0842 should give you OFF, 0135 gives ON. Program code 0842, then key move the power command to another key, perhaps a shifted power key. Where one press of the power key turns the receiver ON, press SETUP + POWER turns the receiver OFF. Give the folowing a try, with code 0842 programmed in, do the following:

1. press and hold SETUP for two blinks
2. enter 9-9-4
3. press AUD
4. press POWER
5. tap SETUP once
6. press POWER again

now reprogranm with code 0135

one press of the POWER key for ON
press SETUP then POWER for OFF

Sorry to bump, but I tried this and it didn't work. 0842 does give off, and 0135 gives on with my receiver (Onkyo 504/540) but I can't get them both to work. :(

I didn't see 9-9-4 in the manual. Is there another 9 code to use?

Edmund

So shifted keys dont work on this remote. Then try keymoving the OFF to different key. Again, with code 0842 programmed in:

1. press and hold SET for two blinks
2. enter 9-9-4
3. press AUD device key
4. press power key
5. press AUD devce key again
6. press an unused key

Test the key, if it and the power key both turn off the receiver, Now reprogram the AUD device with code 0135.

The 994 keymover code isn't in the manuals, ever.

Didn't seem to work. 1298 is also off. Should I try that instead of 0842?

And when you say unused key, is there any key I can use?

This is a UE Atlas JP1.3, BTW. Sorry for not stating that up front.

That actually makes a big difference. First, your remote has more codes than the remote they were talking about originally, and as you discovered, there is a device code 1298 that is probably better than the others since it combines the two in 0135 and 0842. Second, you can't program the POWER key with the keymove function (you can with a JP1.2 cable (http://www.hifi-remote.com/jp1/index.shtml), though). Maybe you can use one of the three keys above the "LIST" button, or maybe "PIP ON/OFF" button? For AUD/1298 do the following to get the POWER ON function:

1. Press and release AUD (or whatever device key you have Onkyo on)
2. Press and hold SETUP until 2 blinks
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type 32794
6. Press the key you chose for POWER ON
The remote should blink twice to confirm.
If there are other keys you need to program I use the same procedure as above, but I'll find the numbers for them.

It works! Thanks. :)

BTW, this was the only universal remote out of about a dozen that knew the codes to my ~2001 era DVD player. It doesn't control all funcitons, but it does work.

If you tell me the code you used for the DVD player and the model and make of the player, I can try to find how to set the other commands you need.

Are you sure you aren't using either 0490 or 0632 for the DVD player device code? If not, try changing to DVD/0490 and see if keys like play or power works. You should have a good portion of the keys. The ones you won't have are listed below, along with the command code (called EFC)

function EFC
>=10 00065
top menu 00003
track- 00041
track+ 00039
open/close 00185

VSS 00254
subtitle 00129
audio 00155
angle 00125
cancel 00195
disc info 00162
sequential 00034
action 00124
repeat 00060
a-b repeat 00037
play mode 00064
disc 1 00029
disc 2 00033
disc 3 00031
disc 4 00035
disc 5 00028

For each of the function you want to add, determine which key you want to assign it to and do a similar procedure as before:
1. Press and release DVD device key
2. Press and hold SETUP until remote blinks twice
3. Type 994
4. Press and release SETUP
5. Type the EFC code for the function you want
6. Press the key you want to assign the function to
The remote should blink twice if successful. Repeat this for each of the functions you want to add.

Sorry but the directv remote will not give you something that onkyo oem remote doesn't even give you, a power toggle. the best code to use is 30135, to get the volume keys to work there has to be a tv code programmed to the tv device or the volume won't work. to punch through the onkyo volume to all devices:

1, av1 or av2
2. press and hold MUTE & SELECT for two blinks
3. enter 9 9 3
4. press SELECT

My comcast remote seems to respond to 5 digit codes rather than the 4-digit ones they provided (mine also has Aux instead of Aud but it the same button). For audio components it seems I need to add a 3 before the code (eg. 30135 and 30842 instead of 0135 and 0842). For my TV I had to add an extra 1 before the code. I think it probably has to do with the way the have the codes organized on the site it has seperate pages for TVs, Audio recievers, DVD, etc. So follow the normal setup process with these new codes and see if it works.

Actually I found the information officially:
"Newer models of the remote, called "Comcast Custom DVR 3 Device" by Comcast, use a 5-digit code. The first digit is 0 for a cable box, 1 for a TV, 2 for a VCR, DVR, or DVD player, and 3 for audio equipment. The other four digits are the traditional device codes."
from: http://en.wikibooks.org/wiki/How_to_use_a_Motorola_DVR/Programming_the_Remote
That site has tons of info on the remote.

Hi mates,
I've an onkyo tx-sr504 receiver and a grundig 2750 dvd player.
The grundig remote control broke down.
I would like to control my dvd-player with my onkyo remote control, but I haven't grundig code in my onkyo r.c. list.

I didn't find any code... anybody have some idea?

I thought about buying an other original grundig r.c. but an other one may break likewise if this broke.

thank you in anticipation

For all of you here that are still looking for "The Code" I wanted to let you know that I found ONE code that works with the Onkyo receiver to turn the Power ON and OFF and Volume Up and Down. The code is 1789 and I have used it with two different universal remotes, from two different cable providers and also with two different models of Onkyo receivers. The only part that doesn't work is to switch it back and forth from TV to DVD or CD etc... But now you can use your universal remote that comes with your cable box without having to buy another remote or kemove anything. Enjoy!
