View Full Version : The official Harmony 360 remote owners thread
jeremyhelling 12-10-07, 02:20 AM There are descriptions of the various delays in the FAQ, under "Support".
Thanks, I'll check that out.
For the record though, I tried it with a 1500ms delay as stated above and it still didn't function properly. After everything else **** down I had to hit the 'Help' button once again to send the 2nd power off command. Curious why if you do the same thing like 3 or 4 times that the remote doesn't 'learn' and start doing itself.
Anyway, think I should try a longer delay or do you think I'm barking up the wrong tree entirely? I might just try a really long delay on that one to see if that solves it.

It's highly unlikely you would need 1500ms for an Inter Device Delay. I would guess your problem lies elsewhere.
You have gone through "Power settings" and checked the correct commands are being sent? Is it set for "A button for On, and a different button for Off"?
You could also try re-learning the PowerOff command, both in Analyzed and Raw (select "Custom" on the learning page).
Failing that, just phone tech support and get them to sort it for you.
quakerroatmeal 12-16-07, 04:19 PM I believe I read through all the pages. But is there a way to turn on my wireless 360 controller with my xbox 360? Or use the remote to turn on the xbox 360 remote controller and that turns on my xbox 360?

You turn on the xbox360 controller seperately, for playing games. Otherwise, you just use the Harmony remote to control the console.

And how would I go about that?
Thanks.

spydermonkey311 12-20-07, 01:46 PM I just picked this remote up for $55 after MIR and Google Checkout from Buy.com. I notice that the Harmony 550 is very similar to the Xbox Harmony remote. Is there anything extra on the 550?

Just the opposite; I researched this quite a bit before I bought my Harmony 360. The 360 has several more buttons (the 4 360 buttons, of course, but I think it's got 2 less in another area, for a net of 2 more), all of which are programmable.
The other main difference is the color of the backlight. I think the green is more useful than the darker 550, but that's just personal preference.

Thanks. I went to (3) different Sears to try and get one on clearance, but no luck. I ended up buying a H659 from Sams for $99. Since I found the 360 remote for a great price, I am returning the 659 to Sams. The button layout looks better on the 360 one, so thats a plus.
rmalbers 12-22-07, 10:22 AM Yes, at least on my Sony, if I remember right, you just add that key/function that does it do an unused key on you remote. (It's been a year since I did it.)

chernomorez 12-28-07, 03:35 PM How does 360 compare to 880? I currently own the 360 and my biggest gripe is the volume and channel buttons, which feel cheap and about to break. Is the build quality any better on 880?

How do you know they are about to break?
bigbing 12-29-07, 09:10 AM hi there. i have had this remote for a while and am recently putting it back into commission to operate a denon 887 receiver specifically to access the vcr 1,2,3 inputs for the composite inputs on the back. does anyone know if that will work?
Sgt Makak 01-22-08, 12:16 AM Anyone know where this remote is sold at a B&M store in Canada? I'm not too comfortable with buying it online, having never used such a remote.

Best Buy sells it in the US, so they may sell it in Canada. You will pay higher though, it goes for $99 US at BB. I bought mine for $60 after MIR from Buy.com and most other online places have it for $79 range.
Sgt Makak 01-22-08, 08:52 AM It's not on Best Buy Canada's website. What's MIR? I'll probably go with Buy.com. Chicks dig guys who live dangerously.
Shoey Peachew 02-03-08, 01:40 AM Hi, I'm about to cancel my Comcast digital service and use OTA HDTV to save some money, but I have a few questions if somebody doesn't mind answering for me.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the Harmony 360 Remote with the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver (http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-Wireless-Gaming-Receiver-Windows/dp/B000HZFCT2) for Windows? I want to to use it to control, for example, channel surfing with the HDHomeRun digital tuner (http://www.silicondust.com/wiki/products/hdhomerun) I'm about to receive in conjunction with any of the popular PVR software compatible with the HDHomeRun. Some software I might end of using are SageTV, BeyondTV, MediaPortal, GB-PVR, or Vista Media Center. Perhaps there's software or a hack that can accomplish this? I know this is a difficult problem to ponder, at least for me it is, and I will appreciate any help.
Also, I have an ATi Remote Wonder II and am I correct to assume since the Remote Wonder uses RF signals it's incompatible with the Harmony 360 remote?
Edit: nvm it seems the xbox 360 controller transmits using radio frequencies also. : (
victor_smithe 02-13-08, 10:20 AM I have the EXACT same problem... the glow will not turn off and will drain the batteries. I tried replacing the batteries, resetting the remote, changing the glow time settings, and it still stays on... at least I'm not alone in this.
I have the same problem now too. replaced the batteries and then the glow would not go off! Tried using safe mode to update the firmware... changing batteries... changing the backlight time... nothing worked. I'm just outside the warranty so Logitech says I'll need to pay for a repair :(
Did anyone ever figure out how to fix this constant glow problem?

I have the exact same problem on my Harmony 659, so this problem seems to affect multiple models. I have started another thread on this topic here:

GrindheadJim 02-26-08, 11:32 PM I am proud to say that I have joined the ranks of Harmony 360 owners. So far, I am impressed. I know I have tweaking ahead of me, but I am really impressed with the overall ease of setup.
GrindheadJim 02-27-08, 11:06 AM Does the guide button on the remote emulate the 360 guide button on the controller? (If not, I can program it to, right?) ;)

You should try pushing it. But yes, it's the same thing.

Ixnay on the ondecentioncay, there, Chet. :D
Not only is my 360 off at the repair center when I got the remote two days ago, but I was at work when I posted that. I appreciate the answer, though - it saves me some extra programming!
I'm trying to figure out a way to program the remote so it doesn't turn anything off when I switch activities, but turns everything off when I press power. Anyone tried that? I doubt the "leave this device on all the time" option will help.
GrindheadJim 03-04-08, 10:01 AM I figured it out. All is working well. Some very minor tweaks left to do, but I know exactly what I want.
jeremyhelling 03-04-08, 11:27 PM Well, for some reason when I hit the power off button while on the Comcast DVR it shuts everything down just fine including the projector. If I'm on the Xbox and hit the power button it shuts everything off BUT the Xbox. I then have to hit the Help button and it shuts it off first try. It doesn't seem to want to learn what the problem is either.
What will solve this? I thought it would be the same settings for the display device regardless of which set or programs it was in when it came to powering off and delays and what not. It seems that those settings should remain unchanged.
Anyone have any ideas where to check in the menu to fix this?

Also, I double checked the delay times (wasn't aware you could have them different for the same device) and they are identical to each other in all four categories. So, I don't think that's it.

Try manually adjusting the power settings for each activity and device. That's what I had to do. Took all of ten minutes.
Good luck.

I know where it is and I know how to adjust it but am not sure what to set it at. It just boggles my mind that it works fine to power off the PJ when it's on the cable box but won't power it off when it's on the Xbox. They both have the EXACT same settings for power and delay so I don't know where to start to fix it. If it works on one just fine it should work for the other.

Have you checked power settings in each activity and each device? It's possible there's simply a conflict - I found that out the hard way, myself. Also, just try putting the problem devices at the top of the power cycle list.
My LCD seems to have gone south and I'm out of warranty. Any suggestions on how or what to look for should I pop open the casing and take a peek inside. I have a strong feeling that it got wedged in between some couch cushions and thus squished.
... Also if anyone happens to know which other Harmony LCDs are compatible with the 360 remote? Perhaps I could find one on eBay and do the repair/replace myself.
dabears 05-29-08, 07:49 PM My Harmony 360 is frozen. All it says is "Welcome to your remote" on the LCD. I've replaced the batteries (no luck), and updated the remote using the software (also no luck). I sent an email to Logitech about 5 days ago and have yet to receive a reply. Anybody run into this problem? Any recommendations? Thanks.
Oatmeal25 06-15-08, 10:45 AM I'm yet another Harmony 360 owner afflicted by "Glow Light Priapism". The Glow light just won't listen to the auto-off feature and stays on until I press the over-sized Glow button. Does anyone have a pill or topical cream that can help with my condition?
I've submitted an email to Logitech/Harmony support about the issue but I don't have much faith.

Here's all I can think of:
-Did you insert the batteries while it was still connected to your PC? If so disconnect it, take the batteries out and put them back in.
-re-download the firmware
-Confirm that the batteries are good, maybe buy a fresh set?

After using the remote management software to file a tech support ticket, I was initially contacted by Tier 1 support. The CSR made sure that I was up-to-date with my software and firmware and after that didn't solve the problem escalated me to Tier 2. I was told I'd receive a call from a T2 rep.
Well, that never happened. Instead they sent me a new remote... well, they thought they did. Some sort of mixup in their warranty fulfillment center. They sent me package with a shipping receipt that said I was getting a remote. Instead I had a F-RCA to F-8mm mini audio cable. Go figure.
I called up Logitech and the issue was fixed within 48 hours. A new remote arrived on my doorstep.
jordanzelda23 06-17-08, 01:58 PM My Harmony 360 remote still works fine, but I plugged it in the other day to update it because I got a new DVD player, but it is not recognized by my computer. It doesn't make the sound like when you normally plug in a USB cable, and when I open the logitech software it says the remote isn't connected. I've had the remote for over 2 years now. I'm getting a new receiver and TV in the next week and would like to program them in. Am I screwed? I tried going through the steps on logitechs site on how to fix it, but nothing worked.
Beerstalker 06-17-08, 05:07 PM Try uninstalling and re-installing the software. Try using a different USB port, or different USB cable.
jon96cobra 06-18-08, 07:52 AM Make sure none of the connectors in the remote for the USB port have anything on them.
I own two of these remotes (along w/a 659, and 520).
The 360 is my favorite remote of all the Harmony remotes I've tried (520, 659, 800 series, One, etc.).
What I love about it are the four jewel buttons in the middle of the remote, but not for Xbox control (I don't own an Xbox!).
In my Watch TV activity:
1. The four jewel buttons are assigned to controlling the key functions (Guide, and A, B, and C) on my DVR (SA8300HD from TW).
From left to right I assign the four Xbox jewel buttons to the DVR Guide, and A, B, and C.
2. I put the Guide navigation functions for Day Back, Day Forward and Page up, Page down on the first page of the LCD soft keys in that activity.
3. The two double-function split "bar" keys below the jewel keys are assigned to:
Exit = Exit
Menu = DVR config menu
Back = Recorded show list
Info = Info
Even my wife uses this setup w/out requiring coaching or help.
I wonder if other people have seen and taken advantage of this (and why Logitech/Harmony doesn't provide the jewel buttons on any other of their remotes). Soft keys are fine for some functions, but for heavily used options there's nothing like a real key to press.
Have any of you 360 users noticed how perfect the jewel buttons on the remote are for DVR control? So nice to have hard perfectly placed hard buttons for those key DVR actions!
I just returned one of my two 360s to Logitech for out of warranty repair...hoping they'll take good care of me. :)
What is A, B, C for on your DVR?
On my 360 Harmony, in "Watch TV" mode for my TiVo..
LCD:
LateNight = To level the volume on A/V Receiver so Dolby Digital isn't so up and down
List = To view list of recorded programs
Page Up
Page Down
Jewel Button:
Y = Guide (by default it is labeled this way)
X = Thumbs Down
A = Thumbs Up
B = Live TV (by default it is labeled this way)
I've had this type of remote for quite a while now and several months ago had a in-warranty exchange at no cost and this newer one has better looking jewel button, easier to see at night.

I too love this remote. I recently got three FTA receviers and they have four soft touch buttons (change commands depending on what screen you are on at the time) and wouldn't you know what the colors are? Red, Blue, Green & Yellow. I have 360's as well so naturally they are perfect for those too for the same reasons. You can pay more for an 880 but this remote is far more intuitive for everything I use.
klemsaba 08-23-08, 07:43 AM Yes, the colored buttons are great for cable DVR users. I have 3 of these remotes!
What is A, B, C for on your DVR?
"A" changes - when watching a show it brings up a general "access" menu, it is also used to confirm/make choices in some flows.
"B" brings up a search function
"C" is generally used to cancel the current activity, or go back one screen

Exactly! Glad to see that you guys have picked up on how elegantly effective this "simple" remote is.
Now - all I need to know is how to open the remote so I can re-order the jewel buttons so that they match my DVR. To be perfect, they would be ordered Green, Yellow, Blue, and then Red, left to right. :D
I actually tried to open the 360 I just sent back to Logitech for service (the RW button had failed, so I figured I might as well see if I could open it), and while I was able to remove the four screws under the battery cover, the remote appears to be glued together. Anyone ever get one of these open and then back together again successfully?

Mine accidentally almost came open. I have no idea how, I assume the kids dropped it or stepped on it, not sure. But I noticed on one side of the LCD the buttons were flush, I couldn't press them. I was alarmed and thought they had got pushed in. But actually as I said, the remote had somehow became slightly separated at the gray and white piece. I pushed it together and it snapped back together.
So maybe if you pull it apart with enough strength, it may unsnap.

Thanks...I tried prying it apart after removing the screws, and it felt like it was going to break! :( I really pulled hard...
I couldn't find any tabs to depress to make it easier to open.
I guess if and when one of mine fails again I'll take a shot at opening it one more time. Don't want to trash a working remote by breaking it in half. :)
focker240 09-11-08, 03:57 PM I have had my Harmony 360 for a couple years and just within the last couple of weeks, the backlight of the remote will not automatically shut off. For instance, when I hit "Watch TV", the remote will light up and start the components just fine and when the activity is done, the backlight stays on. In the past, I had the remote set to turn the backlight off after 5 secs and it would do so after the activity was finished. But now, every time I select an activity or turn everything off, I have to remember to manually hit the "Glow" button to turn the backlight off.
I know that my remote firmware is up-to-date and have tried to reset it to factory settings to no avail. Anyone ever heard of this problem before?.
Haven't heard of the glow light issue. But call Logitech support, maybe they will help with a replacement if they cannot fix it via phone support and even if it is out of warranty. They seem to be pretty willing to help.

I called last night, and they approved to send it on to warranty claims, even though I have had it for over a year. I gave my email and I should be hearing from them in a couple days. We'll see!
spydermonkey311 10-01-08, 01:25 AM I need a custom macro to change the aspect when playing videos, but Harmony only allows 5 commands in a Sequence.
Sequence needed:

3. Left
4. Left
5. Left
6. A
7. B
Any suggestions or workarounds?
Cobra2001 10-04-08, 08:43 PM I just got a new computer (iMac) and have had my Harmony 360 remote for over a year now and it's been working great. I'd like to make some modifications to the settings on the remote, but before I connect it to my new computer, I need to install the software.
I'm going back and forth between installing the software CD I got with the remote (version 5.2) or just going on Logitech's website and downloading the most recent version, 7.5.0. Normally I would go for the newest software, but I have read about many problems with it on the Logitech's own messageboards: http://forums.logitech.com/logitech/board?board.id=remote_software
What would you recommend I do? Do I lose out on a lot of new functionality by installing 5.2 or are the issues with 7.5.0 being blown out of proportion? I was hoping to get some first hand advice here and I appreciate any help anyone can offer.
Thanks!
UPDATE: Wow, just read some of the comments here (http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/21994&mode=feedback) regarding the 7.5.0 software and Mac compatibility. Guess I should try and program my remote off my work PC :-( Any comments from Mac users?
kefkafloyd 10-04-08, 09:01 PM I just installed the 7.5 for Mac and programmed my remote with it today. I didn't have any problems. Macbook with Core Duo and 10.5.5 here.

Ive been using 7.4.1 and I am on a Mac.
I thought I did the auto-update the other day and it updated, maybe 7.5 just came out. No problems for me, just wish the Updating to the remote was faster. Not sure why it takes so long, takes about 40-45 seconds.
Update on my last post. I used my old Radio Shack JP1 remote and programmed it to control the Xbox 360. I then used the JP1 remote to teach the Harmony 360 remote how to do the macro: Display, Left x 4, A, B. I used the Custom RAW mode in the Harmony software. Works great.

Yeah 10.5.5 here too. That's reassuring to hear at least. I wonder if Logitech released an update to 7.5.0 since it came out on 8/6/08? But if they did, you would think the number would have changed to 7.5.1 or something like that. Thanks for the info though.
kefkafloyd 10-04-08, 11:26 PM How long does the update process take when updating the remote?
About 30-45 seconds. I don't think that's particularly slow - keeping it under a minute seems like a fair target to me.
There is the web interface, if you don't want to use the app.

jeremyhelling 10-04-08, 11:27 PM I think I know the answer to this question but wanted to just make sure: There is no clock on the 360 remote display, is there?

There is no clock, that's correct.
killthepoodle 11-11-08, 06:13 PM Can anyone tell me if its possible to have your Directv DVR use the colored xbox buttons to access the DVR remotes colored button functions (as opposed to navigating the LCD).
Also, is there an easy way to access the aspect ratio adjust function from the directv remote? THanks!
killthepoodle 11-11-08, 06:18 PM Nevermind- the harmony software is extremely intuitive. All their experience in computer input devices shows!
uubrgeek 01-02-09, 10:49 PM I called last night, and they approved to send it on to warranty claims, even though I have had it for over a year. I gave my email and I should be hearing from them in a couple days. We'll see!
I developed the same problem with the glow light but was able to fix it by replacing the clock crystal (FYI it doesn't look like what many people would look for when you say 'crystal', its the same shape as a capacitor.) For anyone who's done any soldering its a pretty easy fix. You can get a replacement crystal at any hobby shop (ask for a 32.768KHz crystal) or you can try salvaging one from a watch. I 'stole' one from my daughters discarded Barbie digital wrist watch. Basically the crystal controls the timing of the glow light and when that fails it no longer understand when to shut off.
VelociRacer 01-03-09, 10:08 AM Amazing info! Thanks for sharing uubrgeek.
bow1213 01-04-09, 01:51 AM For the past couple of months my "play" and "fast forward" buttons would not work, after doing a google search and finding this site (http://patricksheedy.net/blog/fix-broken-buttons-on-harmony-remote/), I decided to clean my remote. It took me nearly 2 hours, but I disassembled, cleaned, and reassembled; my remote, and it works as good as new.

Thanks
Sgt Makak 02-18-09, 01:32 AM I need help. My remote was working fine today. I did not get the "Low batteries" signal at any time. Sometime tonight, I tried using it, there was a menu in the display but nothing would happen when I pressed any button. The light didn't come on, the menu didn't change and no signal were sent to my gear.
So I took out the batteries and put them back in. Nothing, the remote is dead.
So I recharged the batteries. Still nothing.
So I changed the batteries. Still nothing.
So I tried plugging the remote with the USB cable in my computer. Still nothing.
I did not bang it, nor did it fall down tonight. It did not come under any physical harm.
What's happenning?
Tersanyus 03-02-09, 06:56 PM Got this remote yesterday. I spent a bit of time getting my activities working right. I really like it. Never had an internet programmable remote before. Last programmable remote I had if you needed a new code added you had to hold your old analog phone up to the remote to download something.
Anyone know if there is a way if you are not using an activity that you can have the volume control always go to one device? I only use Volume on my surround sound.
The volume does work fine when I initiate an activity but if I switch devices or do something else Volume always seems to control what device is selected. Got rid of that by removing Volume from the TV, and PVR but want to remap Volume to surround sound system only at all times.
Thanks!
Beerstalker 03-03-09, 02:58 PM The device mode will only control that device, you can't map the receiver commands to another device.
You really shouldn't be going into the devices very often though, if you are then you don't have your activities set up right. Just make sure all of your activities use the receiver volume commands.
Was considering this remote since I use my Xbox 360 quite heavily, I do everything on it pretty much, DVD, Netflix streaming, and sometimes playing my music through the extender.
Problem is I can acquire a 550 for about 15-20 bucks cheaper, locally, while I'd have to mail order the 360, ontop of it being more expensive.
In your opinion, do you think it's worth the price difference just for the xbox dedicated buttons?
This is gonna be my first universal remote outside of cheap RCA ones I used to buy at Rite Aid, many of years ago. So I don't have much experience with them.
What do you guys think?

How much are you getting the 550 for locally? How much did you find the Xbox360 remote for online? You state 15-20 cheaper but depending on taxes, etc it might be worth getting the 360 one.
TheAlternative 03-18-09, 05:51 PM The xbox buttons are a nice feature I use all the time. It's nice to be able to move about the dashboard menus without needing a controller.
Worth it to me ^^

I live in NYC, so I get taxed regardless if I shop online or not,and on top of that there's the shipping cost which I haven't even factored in yet. So it's actually more than that.
I can get the 550 locally for $60 before tax, while the xbox 360 seems to be around the $70 before shipping and tax, at the lowest, at reputable sites.

Yeah I was talking to my girlfriend today, and it would actually be nice to have those buttons for her and people who come over, considering they would have no idea how I mapped the keys on the remote (if I had a 550) so maybe the extra is worth it.

Do you have a DVR that has colored buttons. My Moto DVR has Yellow, Blue, and Red and those are perfect matches for the 360 remote. Very handy. I mapped the green button to bring up the channel guide.

Was planning on getting DVR through my cable provider, and their remote has colored buttons, so that's a great point.
I'm certainly leaning towards the 360 remote at this point.
Thanks for the input guys.
kunuggs 03-30-09, 02:19 PM So far, this remote is working out pretty well. However, there are some things I am having trouble with.
1) You can re-order the activities. However, you cannot re-order the devices. This seems like a MAJOR oversight to me. Is there any way around this?
2) 2 of my Activities are: "PS3/Projector" and "DVR/Projector". What they're SUPPOSED to do is: turn on all applicable devices and switch to the correct inputs. What actually happens is...........nothing. Nothing even gets turned on. However, on either of these activities, when I hit "help" on the remote, it ALWAYS does the correct things. Now, you would think the remote would figure out that since "whatever it does" the 2nd time around IS correct, it would just do that from now on, but NO. Is there any way to fix this?
Thanks is advance!!!!

You cannot change the order of devices because the Harmony remote does it automatically. The remote puts all devices that are used in the current activity first in the list, and then lists the other devices.

When you hit the Help button all the remote does is send out the same discreet IR commands that the current activity uses to start up. So if it isn't working the first time, then you most likely aren't pointing the remote correctly while the activity is running. My parents have this problem often because they are holding the remote pointed at the ceiling so they can read it when they hit the activity button, then after they hit the button they point it toward the TV. This tends to cause the first few commands to be missed and they have to use the help button to get everything synched back up.
