Hi all... just purchased a Logitech Harmony 360 remote control.
Are there any other Harmony 360 owners out there?

Haven't configured it yet... but initial impression is a very handsome remote with a high build quality. Backlight is very impressive.

The 360 is similar to the Logitech Harmony 520 but has the following differences:
- 8 additional hard buttons
- an additional row of text (six versus five). Seems higher rez.
- Silver color vs. black
- green back lighting vs. blue
- Pre configured for Xbox 360

The 360 can do all the 520 does, i.e. control up to 12 devices. All of the additional hard buttons can be re-assigned as desired.

My intent is to use the X and A (blue & green) buttons for Page Up and Page down. These are two of my most used buttons on my current remote and the main reason I had reservations about the 520. I know I could have used soft buttons, but I wanted these to be hard buttons in a convenient spot.

360 will work great with TIVO. All appropriate codes are already available.

Setup and config of the remote went very easily. Though I'd like to see a power user mode in the software. It's a little tedious doing everything in Wizard mode.

After using for a couple of days a couple of things I'd like to see improved:

1) Most of the buttons are a little soft I'd like to see them firmer like the Y, X, A, B. Also the number buttons could be a little larger.
2) The directional joy thumb pad has too much tactile feedback.
3) The infrared commands are a little slow. For example repeated presses of cursor up takes a while for the STB to catch up. MY IR remote is almost instsantaneous. I'll have to see if I can adjust the timing.

For 3 just redude the inter key delay and the inter device delay for your STB. Also try reducing the number of repeats to 0 or 1.

i was basically on my way to the store to get this when i found 880's online for about 50 bucks more and had to jump on that...only thing i'm having trouble with as far as controlling my 360 is scrolling on long lists of folders when listening to mp3's...i have 170 albums linked to the "portable device" (external hard drive) and it takes awhile to scroll through individually...i have no "right trigger" button and i can't get the remote to learn the code...i don't see any buttons on the 360 remote that are any different besides abxy but i have those in my lcd menu...

any suggestions? the remote that came with the 360 won't go down a page at a time either...

FYI, the 520 has the same number of rows as the picture of the 360...it looks identical in fact. The picture seems outdated.

I've reduced the inter key delay from 500ms to 0ms. Response is still slow.

How/where do I change the interdevice delay and the number of repeats?

Looks like you have several issues:
1) You purchased an 880. Suggest you re-post in the 880 thread you're more likely to get relevant input.
2) Slow scrolling through lists - try to speed up the reponsiveness of your remote. See here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=623320
3) Sounds like you need a page up/page down button. I don't know if this is a valid code option for the Xbox 360 - Anyone know this? Suggest you check the various code options in the add a button section at the bottom of your Xbox 360 device list in setup. You could also put your remote in device mode and try all the different commands. (I don't have an xbox 360).
4) Harmony 360's extra hard buttons are: Y, X, A, B, Clear, Display, Title, Enter

yeah, i posted at remote central and got nothing, posted on the 360 forums and got nothing...i just don't think it's possible :(

no i meant slow as in takes a long time because i'm looking @ each individual folder instead of being able to "page down" to get another "block" of folders...

yeah the default commands for the 360 are pretty limited, there's only like abxy, media center, 360 guide, open tray, and a few dvd commands...but nothing has worked so far...and i don't think i can teach it anything off my controller...i tried but nothing happens and the 360 controller doesn't really have a "sensor" that i know of so who knows if i'm lining them up right...thanks for the info though :)

I received the 360 remote for Christmas and I must say I love it. Having 7 remotes intuitively become 1 is a fantastic change for sure.

I've had one issue...I was trying to change some of the STB controls for my Comcast 6412. I put a few often used controls on the hard buttons (IE, Guide = Y, DVR List = X, VOD = A, Live TV = B, Day forward = #, Day backward = *). So All I did was place often used commands on hard buttons. However, once I did that my soft button display suddenly is only 1 screen deep and does not show page commands or any others for that matter.

How can I put hard buttons commands where I want them, but also keep the soft buttons intact only change their order?

Cheers...

You have to go into the section that says that your device is not responding to every command.. don't remember the exact verbiage.. I was having problems with a Scientific Atlanta 8300HD and this fixed the slow response.

Hope this helps.

Hmmm... that shouldn't have happened. I also put some commands on hard buttons and my soft commands are still there. You may want to redo the STB setup by deleting it and start over.

Btw... not sure if you have found the web based version of the harmony configuration software. It's MUCH better than the software that comes on the CD.

Here's a link to it:

Harmony 360.. not sure if this was to fix the interdevice delay or number of repeats, but I do think I remember that it was measured in ms and not a number ranging from 0-3. So that would be the interdevice delay? I'd have to go back and check, but I am at work now.

Where can I find the number of repeats option?

Edit: Also, I was using the CD installed software and not the web-based utility if that makes any difference.

Anyone else having this promblem? alot of times it forgets to turn on the tv or sometimes the xbox 360 doesn't turn on either, I follow the help display and that fixes it for alittle while and then it starts not turning things on again.

Overall a nice remote besides those issues. Are there any other cool setting I can set up with my sony sxrd and the remote?

Here are my settings for the SXRD. For the Power, I use discrete Power On and Power Off.
Power On Delay: 700 ms
Inter-key Delay: 100 ms
Input Delay: 100 ms
Inter-Device Delay: 200 ms

I'm thinking about getting the Harmony 360 but I have a question. Can I program the remote so that one button on it will actually do 2 normal button presses. For example, sometimes when I'm watching football on my Tivo, I like to use the 30 second skip for the play clock. However, some times run there plays faster so I press 8 second rewind and 30 second skip right afterwards to get a 22 second skip. Can I program the Harmony 360 to do this sequence with one button? If not are there other remotes out (preferebly under $100) that can do that as well as control multiple tivos in one room and control my HP MD5880n?

You should be able to create a macro to do this.

tokerblue
01-05-06, 08:25 PM
The Harmony line of remotes do not support macros in the traditional sense. The only way to run a "macro" is to run an Activity. Once you are in an Activity, no macros are available.

There is a dirty workaround for executing the "mini-macro" you are talking about for the TV. It is possible to try and teach the Harmony the 2 button command you are talking about. You can try and teach the 2 button command to the Harmony in the learning mode. Try to learn the command in RAW mode. Simply press the buttons very quickly. If the Harmony learns it, you can test it.

Another way is to use another programmable remote. Teach it the command and then use it to teach the Harmony. The harmony will accept it as a single command.

sup guys, i just bought the 360 as well.. Im very pleased so far except the buttons feel too easy to break, some are hard to push for input and the buttons are too small. I can get over all of this with time..

My question is.. When you update the remote is it reflashing its memory with the new updated version everytime? If so, wouldnt alot of flashes over time ruin the internal memory?

I wanna reset the remote to factory without messng anything up with my 360 and start over from scratch, can i just use the reset function in the remote prefernces?

I need to fgure out how to get my RF switches for my hampton bay fan and RF switch to my lamp to work with IR signals. If anyone has a solution let me know. I got the hampton bay winward II and a Heath Company inline RF wireless plugin the wall type switch for my lamp. Of course we all know ir remotes arent capable of producing RF signals, so if anyone knows whta i can do let me know. This will free up 2 more remotes of mine

i've been looking everywhere are kind find an answer to this probably very stupid question. but here it goes :

with my setup i need my motorola HD PVR to stay always ON....but i see no option for that anywhere in the online setup or the Harmony help pages. in "watch pvr" mode when i want to shut everything down (except for the box), what can i change in the configurations? right now i am having to go to each component in Device Mode and turn them off one by one.

thanks

I recently bought a Harmony 360 and I have to say I really like it a lot. My question is, is the backlight supposed to come on when you move or pick up the remote? Or stay on when you press a button. I used to have an 880 but I exchanged it for the 360 (and about $150 in my pocket) and I would really like to find a way to make the backlight behave like the 880. Is this possible?

i think if you press GLOW it should turn back off.

i agree it's a cool remote....my only complaint so far is that the volume up button is a little unresponsive for me.

el nacho

Maybe I didn't phrase my question properly.

Currently the only way I get the backlight is if I press the glow button. After the set amount of time it turns off automatically, or I can press the button again and turn it off manually.

Ideally I'd like for the backlight to come on anytime I pick up the remote. The 880 has a motion sensor in it which detects when the remote has been picked up and the backlight automatically comes on.

My question is, Is there a motion sensor in the 360? I can hear something rattling around inside mine, and I didn't know if I got a broken sensor or not.

Well I got one and it didn't work properly at all. I returned it today because I assumed it was defective, but the new one behaves exactly the same way. One of my friends bought one last week, but hasn't had time to open it yet and try it out.

What percentage of people here that have the 360 remote actually have the motion sensor working properly?

What motion sensor are you referring to...the one that lights up the screen when its picked up or are you saying its not controlling your devices correctly? If its about the lighting up issue, it has to be still for quite some time for it to light up when moved. Not sure exactly how long though.

To clarify, the tilt sensor ONLY works when the remote has been sitting for a long time. That is, the LCD should be completely blank, and when you pick it up, it should light up the LCD. I usually notice this after leaving the remote sitting all night. BTW, the tilt sensor is VERY sensitive. For example, I had the remote on a coffee table, and dropped three pieces of mail on the carpet next to the coffee table, and it was enough vibration to cause the Harmony to light up...

AngryofMayfair
01-15-06, 02:52 AM
That seems to be correct - my 520 does the same thing - the tilt sensor only ever works after a long period of non-use - when the screen is totally blank. Then it lights up immeadiately that I touch it.
It seems strange though that after this the sensor never works - I have to always press the glow button....

Alright. That's actually the way that mine works. Thanks for the input.

As I said, I just replaced my 880 with the 360, and that's not how the 880 works at all (of course that's probably why the 880 only has a battery life span of 3-4 days). Anytime you move the 880 the backlight comes on, and I was hoping that there was a setting to make the 360 act the same way, but it doesn't look like this is the case. Maybe someday they will release a firmware update that gives you this option.

Oh well thanks again for the replies. At lease now I know I don't have a bad unit.

OK next question. When I was using the included software to program my remote, while adding activities for my Cable box and TV in my bedroom I got an error message saying something could not be displayed. So I went to the harmony website and tried to run the setup from there. When I got to the same part of the setup, I found that the part that it was crashing at was a selection screen that asked me my favorite channels. And there is mention of not downloading too many days worth of TV listings to the remote because there might not be enough memory on the remote.

Also I noticed that when updating the new settings from the web page (as opposed to the software gui that came with the remote) there is a note that says "To get the latest TV listings, use the Update link above"

What gives? It sounds like the setup program is supposed to be downloading the TV guide information from the internet and saving it in my remote, but I cannot find that information anywhere. What is the point of selecting my favorite channels if they don't show up somewhere.

I assume that this is a feature that many of the other models of Harmonys have that the 360 doesn't. There was a "media" button on my 880, which would have made perfect sence for this application. Can anyone confirm or deny?

czzer
01-16-06, 01:28 AM
Correct. The 360 and 520 do not have the Favourite channels option, so trying to set them up will cause an error.

The 360 and 520 are designed to be used with the PC based Java app for programming, not the web based programming. You can use the web based programming(and it is supposedly meant to be better than the Java programming), but as it is not specifically designed for the 360/520, you might get occasional compatability issues like the one you've found.

to the guy with the rattling xbox 360
thats the tilt ball located in the case that fumbles around when the 360 is horizontal or vertical. the ball falls around and completes a circuit to tell the system it is horz or vertical. It nothing but a tilt sensor in teh xbox 360 dont worry.

our 360 remotes have sensors in them as well. when touched after sitting for a while, it glows.

I am interested in purchasing this remote, but I want to make sure that it can do everything all of my other remotes do. Here’s my setup

Sony 52” Widescreen projection HDtv
Xbox 360
Comcast cable box with DVR
Sony 300+1 DVD changer

The tv has a PIP button on the remote labeled GUIDE, and it allows me to resize both video feeds in an almost seesaw way. One video gets larger, the other smaller. It also lets me choose which feed I would like to listen to, as only one video feed willhave sound at a time. This is a major function that I use that can only be accomplished currently by using the TV remote.

My other major concern, is that I want a remote that can open/close the 300+1 DVD changer, as well as allow me to search the separate folders and dvds in the changer. Again, currently I can only accomplish those by using the DVD changer remote. I want only 1 remote to handle those function, as right now I have about 3 separate ones. Can the Harmony 360 do those things? I understand that I “should” be able to program the harmony, but I don’t want to spend $100 just to get disappointed.

Sidenote:
I am fairly new to the Comcast DVR. When I replay my recordings, I notice that there are still commercials. Is there a way that I can set it so that it does not record commercials like the TIVO can?

czzer
01-17-06, 05:39 AM
The Harmony will learn any function that your original remote can do. It already has a "guide" button, so that will even be correctly labeled. Anything which doesn't have an applicable hard button can be put on the LCD "soft" buttons, over several pages if required.

I recently got a 360 to replace my Harmony 680. I tried to migrate my Harmony 680 configuration to the 360. The way you do this is you run a connectivity check, which tells the web site what model you have, then you do an update. The last time I did this, migrating from a 688 to a 680, it worked perfectly. This time, it seemed to import the configuration, but it did not control my TV correctly. My TV uses a scheme in which one command brings up the input menu, another scrolls through it, and a third command confirms the selection. The 360 seemed to be failing to issue the confirm command when switching activities that used different inputs. I tried tweaking the delays, but that didn't work. I don't think the problem is with importing my old configuration, because I ran into the same problem when I created a new configuration from scratch. I ultimately found a workaround, but I think the 360 has some bugs.

The other thing that I noticed is that not all of the custom commands seem to be configurable. There seem to be a few hardcoded custom commands for each activity that cannot be removed.

Despite these issues, I generally like the 360. It has a nice complement of buttons (a few more than the 520, although it is otherwise similar), nicely laid out, and I like the fact that the buttons vary in shape and texture, which makes them easier to identify in the dark. I also like the display and green backlighting.

I have the Harmony 360 and I'm trying to change the order of the commands for the activity "Play Xbox 360". Currently, it will power on my 360 first, then the TV, then my receiver, then change the inputs on my TV/receiver. The problem is that I don't want the 360 to turn on until AFTER the TV is on and on the right input so I can see what's going on with the 360 when it powers on.

But I can't find a way to change the order in which it executes these commands in the activity? Is there a way to do this?

I am thinking about getting a 360 to replace my 520 because the extra buttons will come in handy with my current setup. I do not own a xbox so I have no use for this activity. I was wondering if the "play xbox" activity can be entirely deleted and ALL the extra buttons can be reassigned. Basically, I want to load the 360 with my 520 config and then customize all the extra buttons. Can I just login to my 520 config pages on Logitech's website and hook up the 360 to initiate a remote update that would download my entire 520 config to the 360 or do I need to create a separate 360 account to program it? You mentioned unremovable hardcoded commands..are these related to the xbox....exactly what commands cannot be removed? thanks for the help.

Yes you can completely delete the xbox 360 device and any related activities. The remote is then basically like a 520 with 8 extra hard buttons.

Not sure about the migration from 520 to 360. Sounds straight forward.... if you search support on the Harmony sight I believe there's a tech note on this.

To migrate from one Harmony remote to another, just do a connectivity check with the new remote, then do an update. I ran into some difficulties going from a 680 to a 360, but going from a 520 to a 360 should be smooth considering that they are almost the same remote.

I just bought one of these and I really love the whole guided setup for this. I am an owner of a Pronto T1000 so I kind of miss the picture based touch interface, but the family likes the new hard buttons.

The only issue I had was using a Radio Shack 15-1987 6-input,2-output AV switch. The thing doesn't have a remote of its own - it learns codes for your other equipment. All of my other equipment can control this unit just fine from 8'-10' away, but the Harmony 360 won't do it unless you get very close to the switch. I'm thinking it is some sort of signal strength issue with the learned code...any way to adjust signal strength??

Anyway I was very very surprised and impressed to see the 15-1987 in the component library, but not having any codes of its own, I was wondering where they must have pulled the codes from for this unit.

I have that model, and it seems to work fine from across the room with my 360. The Harmony remotes generally have good signals. I'd suggest reprogramming the switch. Maybe teach some codes to the 360 and then use them to program the switch.

I think Harmony mines user configurations for codes (which also explains the variable quality of the codes), so the ones in the library could be just about anything. I used an old remote for a piece of equipment that I no longer own to program mine. These days, I'm using the Radio Shack exclusively as a digital audio switcher. I have a VideoStorm 6 input 2 out component video switcher that works the same way; I've programmed them both to use the same codes, so as far as the Harmony is concerned, they are a single device.

I've done that. I have an old Technics receiver remote that I programmed the Radio Shack switch with. Once programmed, the AV switch can be controlled by the Technics remote: numeric #1 for Input 1 jacks, #2 for Input 2, etc. These were also taught to the Pronto, and it controls them fine from my viewing distance. I've taught those same codes to the Harmony and it just can't hit the switch without walking up to the switch. Maybe there is something wrong with the learning port on the Harmony. I'll go through the code learning wizard a few dozen more times to make sure. =)

Other things I can think of are to try learning the commands in Raw mode, and try teaching the Harmony with both the Technics remote and the Pronto. Also, as an experiment, you could add the Technics as a device and see how the library codes for the Technics work on the RadioShack box. It seems odd that the problem would manifest as a range issue. I've never seen this--learning is usually all-or-none. Do have the same problem switching when the Harmony is in device mode?

I recently bought the 360 and am very happy with the functions of the remote. I did have one question though... it seems that the battery door is not flush with the remote casing. It looks like the edges of the battery door are slightly hanging over the casing. Does any one else's remote have this issue?

Yeah mine is that way... probably just a little design flaw :)

yeah, i posted at remote central and got nothing, posted on the 360 forums and got nothing...i just don't think it's possible :(

no i meant slow as in takes a long time because i'm looking @ each individual folder instead of being able to "page down" to get another "block" of folders...

yeah the default commands for the 360 are pretty limited, there's only like abxy, media center, 360 guide, open tray, and a few dvd commands...but nothing has worked so far...and i don't think i can teach it anything off my controller...i tried but nothing happens and the 360 controller doesn't really have a "sensor" that i know of so who knows if i'm lining them up right...thanks for the info though :)
I've contacted Logitech support and Xbox 360 support and was told that the Xbox 360 does not support the "Page Down" function via infrared. This is normally performed by the controllers via RF and used in the media section to skip 10 items (artists, albums, playlists) at a time. Given the positioning of the Xbox 360 as a Windows Media Center Extender and entry point for Windows into the home theater, this seems like a pretty big oversight. Has anyone got around it? If not, would anyone else have interest in requesting an update to the 360 OS that supports this?

When using this to control xbox 360 as media extender, is there anyway to edit the skip forward time?

On my media center PC - I was able to change it to 1 min... on the xbox it defaults to 30 seconds

Just wondering

Well, I finally decided to get the 360 to replace my 520 and I'm glad I did. I love all the extra buttons. Downloading my current programming into the 360 and adding the new button commands went smooth as silk. Guess I'll sell my 520 on EBAY or just keep it as back up just in case.

Would older models of Harmony (lets say 676 or 520) work with my Xbox 360? Thanks in advance.

They will all work, they just won't have the dedicated XBox buttons(X,Y,A,B I think). You would have to put them on the LCD buttons

Can anyone confirm that you need to purchase the 360 system at the same time as the remote to qualify for the rebate... I'm thinking about ordering the remote through Computers4Sure but since I've allready got the system I want to make sure that I still qualify to get $30 back. Thanks

You don't need to purchase them at the exact same time, but I believe you had to purchase them both by the end of January. That's the company I got my remote from, I think, but you might want to check Harmony's website to see if that promotion is still actually going on.

The rebate is good until March and if you buy it from the link below you can get it for about $63 shipped. They charge sales tax in CA so I'm gonna have to pay $69. That's a hell of a deal for this remote. Yes you have to wait for the rebate so it's $93 up front but It's still a great deal in my book. Plus this company is owned by Office Depot so you know they are legit.

I got my remote last night. I really like the look and feel of it. It is also very nice to be able to use one remote for everything. I do have a couple issues with it though.

1. I need to be able to set it up so the remote doesn't ever turn off my HD Tivo. The Tivo keeps powering down when the remote switches activities. The HD TIvo's are supposed to remain on. I made sure most of the activities don't turn off unused equipment but a couple activities don't support that function. Plus when I push the power button on the remote to turn everything off the Tivo goes off too.

2. I can't figure out the best way to get the remote to turn on the house speakers. I have a Niles Amp that outputs to the whole house system. The source can be select on my Denon receiver by selecting Zone 3 on the Denon remote and then selecting the source to output to the Niles Amp. Am I going to have to create separate strings of button pushes on the old remote and then have the Harmony remote learn each string? I need it to be as simple as possible for my wife. I would like to have an activity that says house speakers and then you can choose the source.

1. The HD-Tivo doesn't need to stay on to record shows. I turn mine off all the time. If you still want to leave it on, log onto the website.
- Click on "More Options" under the HD-Tivo.
- Click on "Adjust power settings."
- Select "I want to leave this device on all the time"

2. Why not make a custom Activity that does this? You can add whatever commands you want to send in the Activity.

Click "Troubleshoot" under the Activity.
- Select "No, I want to change these settings."
- Run through the guided setup again.
- At the end when it asks you if everything is correct, select "Yes, but I want to add more control of options and devices for this Activity."
- You'll get to an option screen to add commands when an Activity begins and when it ends.

I was so exited to get this remote after reading all about it.
It was a snap to program (took about 10 min!)

It worked exactly as I programmed it, the first 2 times. (just watching a dvd)
Then
Lockup, nada, nothing.

Took the batteries out and in.
10 min later it came back to life - hit an activity and bam.
Lockup, total freeze - no buttons work.

I assume this is probably an isolated case and I should try a second one?

I have another issue with the remote. On all the activities I can set it so it doesn't turn of the unused devices when starting the new activity. All the activities except Watch Tivo. This activity is missing the setting to keep unused devices on. THis is an issue because there are a lot of times we switch from a dvd to TV to check something. If it turns off the DVD player then we lose our spot. This is also a problem with my 360 because I pause games sometimes to check what is on TV. If it turns the Xbox off then I lose my progress in the game. I know I can set all the components to never power off but then I can't hit power on the remote when I am done with everything and have it all turn off. Why is this setting not available for the Watch Tivo activity?

I have both a D* receiver and a cable box SA8300 HDDVR and needed a remote that would operate both at the same time which is why I got the harmony. During NFL football season, I use both at the same time , so I just set up both the DVR activity and the "satellite" activity to include both pieces of equipment so when I turned on one or the other , they both came on. If I wanted to switch between the two I just pressed the activity button on top to get the menu and selected the one I needed to switch to. In either case, the "unused" equipment remained on.

Also I have done the "test drive" and could not set up that many factors, I assume that there is more "free range" in the software that comes with the remote?

Yes, once you've been through an initial configuration that is a lot like the test drive, you get access to a home page where you can add additional devices and activities, as well as tweak many aspects of the setup.

I see that others have already answered your specific questions, but I just wanted to let you know I just did the exact same thing... replaced a RM-AV3000 with the 360, and I love it. I also have it set up with an X-Box and X-Box 360. I was already using a Harmony 676 upstairs, so I was very familiar with the setup of the remote. It's very easy to get up and running, but can take a *lot* of time to tweak if you want everything just perfect. Well worth it though...

Hey guys,

I'm hoping someone can help me with a few things. I've sent 4 emails to Logitech customer support, but so far nothing has worked.

I have the Harmony 360 and it struggles to control my Joytech AV Control Center 240C.

It is pretty much the backbone of my entire setup as all devices plug into it.

None of the activities change the input on the device. The Help feature does not fix the problem.

I have tried adjusting delays. no luck
I have tried relearning infa red commands. no luck.

the strange thing is that i can program the Y,A,X and B buttons to specific inputs and it works. Also, from the "devices" menu if i select the AV Switch Box option, i can select Input1, input2 etc.

It just refuses to work from any activities.

Also, after one of the logitech updates, the response from my dvd player is extremely slow (even though inter key delay is set to 200ms) and any time i use the directional buttons, it seems to send the signal to both the dvd and the HS60.

It is starting to get very frustrating as i would love to have it working to control everything.

I'd love to even be able to reset to factory settings, but i can't even seem to do that. Using the software that came with the remote literally just does nothing at all.. the screen just stays blank, and using the website, the download never begins to start the update.

frustrating.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mark.

The sort of problem where input changing works from Device mode but not from Activities mode usually means either that the inputs are not set up correctly in Activities mode (are you sure that all of your activities have the switchbox?), or else a problem with delays. Have you tried making the interdevice delay really large--like 5 or 10 seconds (5000 or 10000 milliseconds)?

How about if you include the input switching command as an activity start macro?

To speed up the DVD player, have you tried decreasing the delay still further? Reducing the number of repeats also sometimes helps.

Check the arrow keys in Customize>Change the behavior of buttons for your DVD player, and make sure that the columns to the right of the DVD player do not have any commands listed.

Downloading firmware will normally reset the Harmony.

I have a question, i think i am going to get this remote because fo the "state" remebering. I have a couple of questions though. I have a Toshiba DVD/Tivo and I want to be able to have two activities, one for the Tivo and one for the DVD. Maybe it'll be easier if i describe it like this:

DVD activity : I want the Tv to be on, reciever on, tivo/dvd on, and then press the button to switch from dvd to tivo (even if its on dvd this won't hurt)
Tvio : Tv, reciever, tivo on and press the "live tv" button to make sure its on live tv
TV: tivo off, tv on, reciver on

Ok so bascially i want to see if you can have button presses in the activities. Also, i was wondering about this scenerio. You start will all devices off, from there when you start using, does it keep a tally of everything off an on, then when you do a final power down everything would be off. Then the next day it knows everything is still off (unless you manually do it). Sorry if this doesn't make sense. Any help would be awsome!
Thanks!

Yes, this is exactly the sort of thing the Harmony remotes are designed to do

You can define a series of commands to run when an activity begins, and another series to run when the activity ends. And yes, the remote will keep a tally of everything on and off from day to day, unless you confuse it by switching something manually or with the original remote. If it does somehow get "out of synch," there is a Help function that sequentially steps you through all of the devices to restore synchronization.

This is the reason I will return my remote. That is stupid. It takes me just as long to pick up the other remote. May sound lame, but I bought this for ease, and that isn't easy... :( I did email Logitech and when they fix the problem I will buy it again, until then looks like my search will continue.

First I'd like to start by saying I like logitech's hardware generally. Over the years I've used a number of their mice and webcam products and they've worked well. However my biggest complaint has always been their software and the software for the 360 remote sets new standards of awfulness even for them.

First and foremost this software wizard is using around 200 megs of memory and loading at startup on my XP machine! That means that long after I configure the remote this thing would be booting up on my PC in the vain hope I got a new piece of equipment in my AV rack and needed to add it to the remote. I thought something must be wrong with the computer I installed their software on so I tried it on several different machines. Clean installs, old installs, minimal services running etc it didn’t matter this thing was always clocking in around 200 megs of memory.

It isn’t such a problem for me I have a good pc and I can control what the software does, but if I recommend this thing to a less technically savvy family member or friend with a normal computer Logitech’s software would at the least severely hamper their PC’s function. Which brings me to another point why does Logitech install 2-4 extra services with every device? Again there are ways around that but if I let Logitech have its way I would have 8 extra processes running to control three devices one of which, the remote, is almost never connected to my computer! Logitech installs updaters, nagware, config utils that should be solely in the control panel, etc. it never ends with these guys. I had to register to actually configure the remote and about ten minutes latter I get a popup form their “desktop manager” asking…. To register again!#$@? I’m sure that registration was totally different from the first registration which would roughly be my point.

And we haven’t even gotten to the remote itself which has a wizard that is to be generous counter intuitive in many respects. By default why doesn’t my Logitech “360” remote control the media extender aspects of my Xbox 360? The bundled remote that came with my WinTV-PVR-150 did a better job out of the box controlling my 360 than the Logitech 360 remote. Do I set the 360 up as a “game console with DVD” or as a “home theater pc”? Either one is not a perfect solution, to get what I want I have to spend time digging through their bizarre interface to manually configure. For $140 this thing should not be so much work to get working properly. Why aren’t there devices in the list labeled Xbox 360 v. Xbox 360 media extender? If they can’t be bothered to do that then at least allow manual configuration without the wizard. I could go on.

The physical remote itself uses buttons that click in many places to scroll through menus. I happen to not like this but that is more a personal taste issue.

Other than that it’s great.

The help button on the remote is a good idea and resolved issues like the remote turning on my Sirius receiver when I hit the power off button. It is neat when you walk in the room in the morning and the remote turns on when it senses vibration. When properly configured it does its job well. My wife now has no problem controlling our AV setup and is very comfortable switching between devices. I just don’t think it is as easy as Logitech advertises. The software sloppiness is totally inexcusable and only happening because they think nobody will notice.

I wrote Logitech about these concerns and received only blandishment in return.

I just sent them an email. I also called. Hopefully others will do the same.

Here's the text of the email I sent:

"Within an activity, the LCD button assignments always seem to sort themselves by device. The result is that the button assignments are not in the order I want.

It would be nice to be able to get the remote (or the software) to stop sorting the LCD button assignments by device, and just leave them in the order I entered them.

Also, when the user adds an LCD button assignment to one activity, it is sometimes automatically duplicated to other activities. Usually, this is NOT desirable, so it would be nice to be able to turn off this automatic duplication "

Here's the response I received:

"Thank you for your recent inquiry about your Harmony Remote

Then I received the following email:

Well, I guess that's it then, isn't it?

Sounds like a simple mistake in which somebody got two customers mixed up. Harmony tech support has a good reputation, although they do occasionally drop the ball. I've never had any trouble understanding them when I call, or noticed any particular accent. The first response guys generally only handle basic things and have to kick any real problems upstairs, but that is pretty much universal with tech support.

Thanks I'm aware of that but I do appreciate the heads up. Regedit, removing it from the startup folder and uninstalling are all options too.

My larger point though is that a piece of software that is configuring my remote using over 200 megs of memory is a sin. Logitech was completely unconcerned about this when contacted. I got a form letter that they hadn't heard from me in a month so they "assumed the problem was resolved". I hadn't heard from them asking for clarification on the problem. Writing to them that it was not resolved resulted in no response. Understandable? Yes. Excellent customer service? Not even close.

The "if we don't hear back from you we approve the problem is resolved" is a standard part of Harmony's customer service letter. Basically, if you want them to continue to be involved to fix a problem, then you need to respond. If you are just complaining about something, then the complaint is probably registered.

I can understand why they are not particularly concerned about the software "using" 200 megs of memory. With modern operating systems, this doesn't mean much. It's not like the old days when RAM reserved by an application was unavailable for use by other programs--any memory that isn't active gets paged to disk, anyway, so the impact on performance of even a large program is minimal unless it is actually doing something. Still, I'm surprised that there is not a simple way to stop it from loading under Windows; on the Mac, it is just a matter of changing a single preference.

Your note on memory while technically correct to a point misses the larger issue. The entire Windows XP operating system doesn’t use 200 megs of memory on a base install. So to give you a sense of just how badly coded this software is it is using more memory than all of windows xp. That isn't particularly concerning? When people criticize Microsoft they need to turn a jaundiced eye at every third party programmer that “isn’t particularly concerned” with how system resources are used, because that would roughly be my whole point here. If every coder says “200 megs is not particularly concern”ing then all of the sudden your system is bogged down by a bunch of pointless resource hogs.

Several of the fixes I listed are setting a "preference" for windows my complaint is that logitech gives you no option.

The fact that Logitech doesn’t have a form letter that says something to the effect, "Thanks for the input dully noted." and instead sent a form letter that says, "We fixed your problem" shows a rigidity of organization that explains their problems. Be it coders who like you think utilizing 200 megs of memory is no big deal or CSRs who push out a form letter without ever reading the complaint. Or worse when they read it and don't understand simply close it.

Many organizations have these sorts of problems. Having had the misfortune of dealing with Apple support in the past I guess I understand why you would view this as the norm. However, company's who want to maintain their long-term fiscal health should not treat their customers like this.

I'd also like to say that none of the above is meant as an attack on apple, I know apple users are touchy about their company and I don't care to have a discussion over the merits of Apple v. Microsoft both companies have their strengths and weaknesses and that is unrelated to this issue. For the record I use equipment from both companies.

On the Mac, all you do to stop the Harmony Remote software from running at boot is go to the Login Items in the Preferences pane and delete the Harmony software. This is the standard Mac interface for controlling what programs load at boot. Takes about 10 seconds. Or for that matter, I can simply call up the Harmony Remote menu from the dock and choose "Quit." There is no need for Harmony to provide an option, because the option whether or not to run at boot is a standard part of the Mac OS, available for all programs. If it is also this trivial under Windows, then I don't see what you are complaining about.

Are you really sure that the software is "bogging down" your computer? As simple as it is to quit the program or diasable auto-loading, I generally don't bother, because I haven't been able to detect any impact on performance. And for comparison, the Harmony remote software asks for 537 MB on my Mac. But when I check to see what resources it is actually using at idle, it turns out to be 26 MB (under 1.5% of available RAM) and also under 1.5% of the cpu. Small wonder that I can't detect any improvement from quitting. So I generally just leave it running for convenience. Windows is also a modern OS, so I imagine that the impact is similarly small. In the old days, when software ran in fixed RAM partitions, it was important for a resident program to minimize its RAM partition and manage its own disk storage of anything large. But with modern virtual memory based operating systems, it is more efficient to simply allocate a large chunk of virtual memory and let the OS determine how much of that space needs to be RAM and how much on disk. If there happens to be a lot of RAM available when the program tries to access the space, then it will run entirely in RAM, and be very efficient. If resources are limited, either because the system has limited RAM or because other software is competing for the space, then it will end up with most of its data being paged to disk.

You repeated your prior point, albeit with expanded facts, but failed to address anything I wrote. Your description of how an OS works is mostly correct but as I said misses the forest from this particular tree.

My absolute primary point is that it is pure laziness to write a program that uses 200 megs of main memory. You say, doesn't matter it is only a 2% hit. If it was only a 2% hit and only this time okay maybe. But you and I both know that Logitech's remote software isn't t he last piece of software going on our computers. It isn't even the last logitech software. Logitech is not alone in doing this sort of thing it is simply the most egregious example I've come across. I am also making this point not for people like yourself who know your way around your computer but people who bought this product because it said "easy installation" on the package.

The program can and should be done with much less system impact. I have never seen a program for a home workstation that uses so much. You are correct that many people including coders don’t view using system resources this way as a problem, but that is exactly my point. Every time I have to go to a family member’s house because “their computer is slow” and I boot the thing up and 20 icons activate in the taskbar who’s fault is that? The user’s? The fact is it is a problem in the computer industry writ large and Logitech in particular. If they all want a piece of real-estate on the desktop than for cripes sake write an efficient ap.

As I said last time it is a simple process to turn off this logitech software using windows controls, I'll repeat for a third time that it should be an option in the logitech software and not reliant on a users knowledge of windows or mac OSx. Actually my real point is it should never be a startup service at all because how many times are we going to reprogram the remote? 4,5, 10 times. It still doesn't make sense to have this thing running at boot even if it is only using 2% of resources. If I let logitech have its way with the various devices I own (mouse, webcam, remote, etc) from them it would install 8 unnecessary processes. If resource management is no big deal "given the modern OS" that would mean 16% of my processing down the tube. (Not a fair statement because not all their software uses 200 megs but you get the idea) And that is just the logitech stuff. The fact is the average windows user has only 500 megs of memory which means your percentages should be higher, I understand that your average apple desktop or G4 has much more than that but they are sold as premium rigs with premium prices.

Frankly, however, if I had a high performance car and took it to get new radio with remote and they informed me that I was going to lose 2% on my gas mileage not because of the radio but rather because of their spiffy new remote I’d be ripped. Your right, most people don’t notice, at least at first. But this mentality that a +2% system hit for a third party ap that always runs is not a problem is pernicious in the extreme.

What benefits does the 880 offer over the 360 remote? (Yes, I have an Xbox 360.)

I'm trying to navigate the reviews and the Logitech website, but I haven't found a side by side comparison.

I have:

Xbox 360

Toshiba CW34XC2 34" widescreen HDCRT

Mitsubishi S-VHS VCR <-- never used

My Kenwood receiver's remote is a universal learning remote, but I find it extremely irritating to use. Thus, I'm constantly flipping between:

OK, I had major issues switching video inputs on the TV. Unfortunately, the TV doesn't have the ability to go directly to an input. It must cycle through them, and the sensitivity of the IR sensor is not the greatest, especially just after the TV has been switched on. Basically, after turning the TV on using the Harmony 360, the TV would never go to the right input unless I held the Harmony 360 remote right in front of the IR sensor. Very annoying.

Anyways, what I've done now is hooked up my Panasonic RP91 DVD, Daytek P871 DVD, Xbox 360, and SA 8300HD all to the Zektor HDS4.1 (http://www.zektor.com/hds41/index.html) component video / digital audio switcher. The Zektor has inputs that are directly selectable by the Harmony, and it doesn't degrade the component image quality at all. So, I just always leave the TV on the same component video input. Problem solved.

I swear, buying the Zektor switcher and the Harmony remote is the best thing I've done with my home theatre system in a very, very long time. I'm a happy camper. :) I can't get the remote to be quite as fast for scrolling lists, etc. as my Xbox 360 wireless controller and my SA8300 HD remote, but it's good enough. Being able to use just one remote makes up for it.

My DVD recorder is on a different TV input, but that's not a big deal, cuz I rarely use it - roughly once every 2 months.

P.S. I simply unplugged the VCR. It think the last time I used it was 1.5 years ago, and that was only to convert a friend's VHS tape to DVD.

You might try increasing the power-up delay for the TV. My TV requires 16 seconds (16000 ms!) before it can reliably accept input changes. Although if you are doing most things through the Zektor the improved input switching might not be worth the delay.

Yeah, I tried 10000 ms and it still wasn't good enough, and I didn't feel like holding the remote there for a 20000 ms delay. :p So, I thought it would just be easier to send all the video through the Zektor. Everything is done within a few seconds.

The only device that is on a different video input now is my rarely used Panasonic DVD recorder. I haven't even set that recorder up on the Harmony anyway, because it's configured to use a secondary set of Panasonic remote codes so as to not conflict with my Panasonic DVD player. However, I didn't see the secondary remote codes listed at the Logitech website. (If I use the default Logitech settings for the DVD recorder, it controls my DVD player instead.) I don't want to have to teach all the secondary codes to the Harmony either.

For the rare times I use the DVD recorder, I'll just whip out its remote. I need to get off my couch once in a while. ;)

You may be able to teach the commands to the Harmony quickly using "Confirm infrared commands." which only requires that you hit 2 or 3 buttons on your original remote. I was able to use that to set up my TiVo, which uses a secondary code.

Don't waste your time futzing with device mode. Once you have the activities set up right, you'll probably hardly ever use it. If you are hitting the device button more often than once a week, you probably don't have the remote set up correctly. Focus on adding all of the commands that you use routinely to the relevant activities.

Does the Harmony 360 have a power saving mode? I could have sworn when i first got it, if i pressed the circle power button in the top right corner it would go into "power saving" mode. Ever since i added devices it no longer does this. It never turns off. The backlight goes off, but the menu never goes away. Is this draining my batteries? The 360 automatically goes into a "deep sleep" power saving mode if it is undisturbed for a prolonged period of time. It is hard to catch it asleep, since it has a very sensitive vibration sensor, and will wake at the least disturbance. When it wakes from sleep, the backlight comes on briefly.

I was looking at the harmony 360 remote. I don’t have an xbox or plan on getting one soon. My question is this: Am I giving up too much functionality in other areas due to this having xbox specific commands, or, to word it another way, are there other remotes to consider in this price range if not using the xbox function?

Secondly, can the lcd display list user input data, say the station frequency or name of a radio station so that pushing the adjacent button will go straight to that station when in fm mode? Thanks in advance!! I will be controlling older equipment, a Denon 883 ht, go-video dvd/vcr and possibly dish dvr 625 as well as a couple other odds and ends.

You should consider the Harmony 550, very similar to the Harmony 360. I don't think you can list stations or channels on the LCD for these two remotes (atleast i could never find it in the settings) but you can set them to default to a certain station/channel when switching to an activity.

You could just list the station id in the LCD to correspond to the button. Pressing the button would goto the preset on the receiver. That should work just fine assuming your receiver can receive descrete input commands. You could even have the remote tune to a specific preset when starting the activity.

Sorry - I know this questiong has probably been asked but I can't seem to find anything through searching:

Is there a way to control the order of custom commands in an activity? I set them up in the order I want them in the Web site configuration tool, but when I push the config to the remote, it always insists on re-ordering them. This is a pain for navigation buttons like the "NextDay" and "PrevDay" buttons to control the schedule on my DVR; these two buttons always appear on two different pages in the custom commands, no matter how hard I try to get them next to each other. No response from Logitech support yet.

I only choose a video input, or other "default" type input. However, I want to control only the sound for my DVD player with this receiver since I have to use an HDMI cable. I have an optical going in to the receiver, but this sort of option isn't available. Same with my 360. I have it on Video 4, Optical 1. But all it lets me choose is Video 4. What I need to do for audio on the DVD player is to have it do InputDigital then DigitalUp Twice. For 360, it would be up just once. I believe the issue is summed up by the Remote Software:

The remote currently thinks that your device has the following inputs:
# DVD
# CD
# Tape
# 6/8CH
# Video 1
# Video 2
# Video 3
# Video 4
# Video 5

Well, that's dandy, but I also have various other audio only inputs. What am I missing here?

Edit, ah bloody hell, now all of a sudden the receiver won't respond at all. I was able to set it up manually....

Edit 2: I just noticed as I went through the Receiver set up for the umpteenth time that it never asks you how you want to set up your xbox 360. Of course I have it going through the receiver for the sound, so why isn't it asking me where it's going in?

Do you need to have a different input selected for audio and video at the same time? ie "DVD" for video and "Digital1" for audio? Normally you can link audio and video inputs with your receiver, but if you can't, there should be a way around it.

Add a new device, call it "ReceiverAudio" or something that makes sense. When you set it up, say it has no power buttons.

For the "Adjust Inputs" for the new device, give it all the audio inputs you have, and tell it the command(s) to select these inputs.

Add it to all activities that require audio switching, re-run the activity setup wizards for these activities and it should ask for the input required for "ReceiverAudio" device.

You should set up the XBox audio options through the "Play XBox" activity.

You can control the order for a particular device, but they will be autosorted by Device in a standard order. There are various workarounds. For example, you can teach a command to a different device. If you need to change the Device sort order, you can use a Utility activity, which lets you add devices in any order.

I have done that for the xbox. HOwever, it offers only those inputs I showed above. TO get to teh choosing of digital inputs, I was using the input digital to make it active and then digitial up digital up to make it cycle up. However, that's assuming it starts at the same place every time, otherwise it will be cycling to some random digitial input. The Harmony seems to have completely forgotten these other inputs or I'm missing something. I would think I could link Video 4 to Optical 2, but I see no way to do it.

The list of inputs in the "Adjust Inputs" setup is editable. You can add/rename/delete inputs in the list to make the list match what your device actually has(just type in the boxes).

It works FLAWLESSLY with the Comcast Motorola DVR.
And if you have the original DVR remote programmed to use a 30 sec. FF and a 15 sec. RW, the Harmony remote even picks that up!

just got it, and it does work better then could be expected. I expected some hard ass remote to install, but using the USB and the computer it took like 10mins.

Only thing I am having trouble with is that if I use my xbox 360 it has to be on the first HD input on my TV, and my comcast DVR cable box is in the second HD input on my TV. If there not a way to have a one button push to switch between the two without having to first select the TV and change the input? Its hella annoying like that, iw ant to just be able to select the cable box and the TV automatically switches. Does that make sense? thanks guys!

Has anyone had any experience setting up a Harmony 360 using a Mac running OS 10.4? I just got one of these great remotes today. followed the included instructions, loaded the software rebooted, plugged in the remote and nothing happened. When I run the software I get nothing on my monitor like an application window, just the menu bar at the top of the screen. So the only thing I can change is the preferences. I finally was able to log on the the member site though the support page for the 550, and was able to program the remote using the web application, but I am guessing there is a better way. Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

is there a way to add a "macro" of some sort?

i have the xbox hooked to the tv with analog sound, and i have digital going to the surround system. so i can use the tv when i have to be quiet and surround when i want to get into the game. but the hdtv has a slight sound lag. i have 2 activities set up, one for tv sound xbox, one for amp(surround) sound xbox. this lag is driving me nuts

is there a way to set up a button that will lower the tv volume in the amp activity? if i hit volume down, it controls the amp. i tried adding it to the tv(display) column in the activity, but it did nothing.

i don't want to have to turn on the tv, lower the volume and then run the activity, or go into the device menu. oh yea, on my tv, if you mute it, the mute symbol always stays on, and i don't think it would work anyway.

or can i add a tv(sound) column to the activity some how? thanks

Where did you add it in the TV(Display) column? If you assigned it to the main volume buttons it should send volume commands to the amp and TV at the same time...maybe the TV is just getting confused by the extra IR.

Try adding the TV volume commands to the LCD screen buttons(the section at the bottom of the "Change button behaviour" screen). Don't forget to add an appropriate label.

that is not how i understand it working, and it doesn't do this on my setup. only the device you said will control the volume will work in each activity. it sets this up automatically, based on what your controlling. i think that is why they separated tv(display) and tv(volume).

edit: forgot, i added the volume controls to the channel + -, as they are not being used on the xbox set up.

in the "xbox" activity there is a tv(volume) column and tv(display) column, all is well. in the "xbox surround" activity there is an amp and tv display column, that is it, the tv does not get any volume info. i tried adding it to the channel button, it did not work.

Try adding the TV volume commands to the LCD screen buttons(the section at the bottom of the "Change button behaviour" screen). Don't forget to add an appropriate label.

i tried this as well, no go. i think if there is no the tv(volume) column, no volume control will work

edit again: found a work around!!

i went into the xbox device setting and learned 2 new ir commands, one called CustomSound+ and CustomSound-, then i used the tv remote to add Volume + and Volume -.

then i added them to the channel+ and - in the activity list. worked great.

Thanks for your help czzer.

Glad you got it working.

Just to clarify, the (volume) part of the TV(volume) description refers to the role the device is playing in the activity, so in this case it is referring to the TV's role as a volume controlling device. This shouldn't mean you can't have it sending non-volume commands. The label's main purpose(as far as I can work out) is for determining how commands are propogated across multiple activities. ie if you make a custom button for "aspect" under the TV(display) column, then this "aspect" command will appear in any activity where the TV is assigned as a display device "TV(display)", but not where the TV is assigned as a volume control device "TV(volume)" only.

Also, you can have 1 button send multiple commands to different devices by assigning commands in 2(or more) columns in the button assignment page. This is what I was getting at when I asked if you had assigned the TV volume commands to the same volume keys as the receiver volume commands.
This is how you can get the remote to send a "dim lights" command when you press Play in your watch DVD activity for example. You can assign "Play" from the DVD player as well as "LightsOFF" from your lighting controller to both be sent when you press the Play button.

My appologies if I've just confused you more...the main thing is that you've got it working how you want! :)

oh, i see what you meant now. but i didnt want the two volumes to work together. in this activitity, if i want the tv volume down, i would want the amp volume up or at least stay the same. thats why i added it to the nont used "channel+/-" buttons.

i have tried to add custom label settings, but they just dont seem to work as i wish, and the volume never works. just seems like unless the tv(volume) is availible, no tv volume commands can even be sent. weird

after 6 months i have started having some issues with my harmony 360 -

my "watch dvr" activity used to turn my projector on but ever since adjusting it's response time to make the projector commands speed up (the projector device response was slow as molasses when everything was working right in the activity), the projector won't turn on without pressing help. I even went back and reset the response millisecond time to how i had it before (i can live with slow projector command response time since i rarely use it outside of the activity mode), but even then it still doesn't turn on anymore without pressing help.

also, my "play xbox 360" activity command rarely turns my 360 on, even when pointed right at it. I always have to press help. I have gone into troubleshooting and tried many different response/ready times, and i still keep on having to press help.

any help appreciated,

hmm....this worked for when i needed to press HELP (it repeats enough now that when i press HELP is always takes care of it), but the problem remains when i first press actions like "watch pvr" or "watch dvd" - the projector won't turn on unless i press help.

also, increasing the repeats messes up my device mode for the projector which i sometimes need to go into to change some settings.

seems like the longer i have this thing, the less it works for me!! for the first six months i never had any of these issues.

Okay I've been struggling for 2 days with this remote... it seems to have a ton of potential, but I need this function to work...

I have a DirecTV Tivo (model is R10). This box has 2 lines coming in, which i can switch back and forth between using the "Live TV" button on my DirecTV remote. But I cannot get this function to work at all on the Harmony remote.

I've tried Raw, I've tried reprogramming, I've somewhat tried the setup in the knowledge base about changing the setting channel of the remote itself. That just messes up both remotes. If Live TV does work (it will every now and then) it switches to the Guide button after i go to the Tivo menu.

Anyone, please, have any idea?

All other devices are OFF

I think the remote is trying to turn off the 360, but it's already off so the signal makes it turn on. But if I set the Xbox360 settings as "This device is always on" then would my activity "play xbox" turn it on anymore?"

My "Watch TV" Setting is just

"Turn TV on"
"Set TV to HDMI2"
"All other devices are off"

My "Play Xbox360" is
"TV on"
"TV set to compoent"
"360 on"

Ok so I just clicked the activity to play the 360, it switched the TV on the right input but the 360 didn't turn on. So then I hit the "Watch TV" activity and my TV goes to HDMI 2 and I'm watching cable from my STB. It is during this switch that my 360 turns on. It seems to turn on when my remote "Makes sure other devices are off" as I switch activities.

BTW: I hate that part of the remote, I don't want anything to turn off or on unless I specifically tell it too. The power setting options don't have "Leave this device alone unless I say so" option.

You can tell the remote to leave everything on when switching activities. Make sure the 360 isn't in the device list for the Watch TV activity. I just got this as a present and have been scratching my head over how to use this remote with my television...

Any suggestions for a TV with 2 HDMI inputs when trying to use the a "Watch TV" activity? My Vizio VP42HDTV uses the same button to swap between both HDMI inputs.

My method of TV is HDMI to the TV via my Comcast (Motorola) DCT-3416, so if the last thing I did was watch TV, it ends up switching to HDMI-2.

My temporary work around is to have the "Watch TV" activity hit the HDMI input twice (which just cycles it back from HDMI-1 to HDMI-2 and then back to HDMI-1), but I wonder if this'll cause problems with swapping between activities.

I'm more than 100% sure that the xbox isn't part of the "Watch TV" option ;) In the power option the only thing I see is "leave this device on always" "Turn off when switching activities" and "there are no power buttons" If I change it to "leave on all the time" the remote doenst send anything to it; because it assumes its on. I have to use the help menu to turn it on "is the 360 on?" I click no, then it boots up.

Anyone using PIP with their TV and tried mapping PIP-actions on the Harmony?

Using the software, I tried mapping PIP-actions, such as "PIP size", "PIP move", etc., from the drop down list onto my Harmony remote for my Samsung. Yet these actions don't work. I'm guessing it's because these actions aren't on the original remote--you have to do them through the TV menu, yet the Harmony software lists them as mappable. Anyone have experience with this? I recently purchased this remote as an open box item, seems to work perfectly. Whenever some buttons are pressed the remote lights up bright and only for the period of time in which the button is depressed. Other buttons cause the backlight to remain on for the appropriate setting (15 sec). Why do some buttons trigger the backlight to remain on and others do not? Is it normal when a button is pushed (ie volume, change channel, navigation arrow) for the remote to brightly light up for the duration of the button press only?

Thanks

I'm having trouble teaching this remote some missing commands from LG LST-3510A combo DVD/HDTV box. Namely: Surf, Guide, Info, Signal.

9 out of 10 times pressing the botton on the original remote, the harmony reports an error, maybe by the 10th press it learns it. But when I map the new command to a hard or soft button, it doesn't work.

I am seeing Firmware 2.1 on my screen, what is the latest Firmware for this remote? I used the Harmony Desktop Software 7.0.1 (or later) to update Firmware and that is the latest it was able to grab. Correct me if I am wrong, but the web-based interface does not offer Firmware updates, and I think the latest Firmware for this remote may be 4.1? Thanks.

EDIT: I found the Firmware d/l option on the web, and confirmed my software was 7.0.2. Still curious to know if anyone else is having trouble with "learning" function of this remote, and what the latest Firmware is for the 360. Thx.

Thanks.

Yup I've mapped PIP functions from my TV. If your TV doesn't normally do the function then it won't work. My TV just does a splitscreen PIP so the commands PIP move and stuff like that don't do anything but the buttons PIP Up or PIP Swap DO work.

FYI,

If you want your 360 to turn on directly to Media Center it is possible. Setup a new device. Make it a gaming console and select XBox 360. In the options select the option that lets you power on the device with a different button than power off. For the power on function select the Media Center command. For the power off select the PowerOnOff command. Now name this device something like 360 Media Center. Now just make a new activity identical to Play XBox 360 except use your new device (360 Media Center) instead of the default XBox 360 device on the remote.

Works like a charm.

I'm having trouble teaching this remote some missing commands from LG LST-3510A combo DVD/HDTV box. Namely: Surf, Guide, Info, Signal.

FYI, it seems the Harmony does not like the signals from my LG remote. I got fed up with this. Instead, I used my 7-year-old OneForAll Cinema 7 to teach the Harmony these particular LG commands. The OFA had no issue learning them years ago.

It's a shame that Hamony, however clever it is, cannot get over this issue.

Has anyone figured out if it's possible to map a button to eject the HD-DVD drive instead of the regular tray?

I haven't tried but does the remote that came with the hd-dvd have an eject button that does that? If so, it could be learned. I never took that remote out of the green packaging and its still in the HD-DVD box. Have a feeling it doesn't though.

If its the SA8300HD, then yes. Some keys need to be mapped. For instance, the A,B,C buttons can be mapped a number of ways. You could either go by color or by letter. For ease of use for my wife I went by letter. A to A, B to B, and then C to "Back". I felt this was the most common use for the C button. I put PIP buttons at the very bottom of the remote where the small buttons are. I then had Page Up and Page Down on one side of the LCD screen and PIP Channel Up and PIP Channel Down on the other side of the LCD screen.

Hi there, delayed response but I just bought a Harmony 360 and found the delay between commands frustrating.
I just found the fix on the logitech forums
"
------
Click on the Device's "Troubleshoot"
- Select "Show me more problems"
- Select "Device doesn't appear to receive every command correctly."
- Select "The device responds too much to some commands (for example, volume up increases the volume too quickly)."
------

Then set the number of repeats to 0; the default is 3 -- way too high! I set it to 0 for all of my devices and now they respond just as if I were using the remote that came with them (even the Tivo!).
"

Hope this helps

BTW, the Harmony can be frustrating at the beggining, but if you stick at it and fine tune it, its brilliant! Took me the last 3 days of tinkering redoing and fine tuning setup over and over - but its worth it

Yes folks, what fotski said, stick with it. I've resolved slow response by lowering inter-key, inter-device, input, power-on delays as well as repeats. The thing now BLASTS away. I think out-of-the-box it is set way too slow and conservative to account for very slow devices on the market. I've had a bigger issue teaching the remote from an original remote for LG DVD/HD combo box, finally gave up and used my trusty 7-year-old OneForAll Cinema 7 remote to teach the Harmony. Something fishy between Logitech and LG!

I can't count the times I created devices and activites only to delete them and start again, until I was happy. It took about a week of casual tweeking. Coming from a former JP1 remote programmer, this Harmony rocks!

EDIT: Now if someone can point me to a how-to for programming this thing with some keys from my IR wireless keyboard! I just want some basics like, up, down, left, right, function keys, mouse clicks, etc. That is the last major issue I need to tackle.

If you had to choose, would you go with the 360 or the new 550? I can get both for about the same price. The 550 matches the rest of my system a bit more (no 360 yet for me). Am I really going to be missing anything by going with the 550 or vice versa? They seem pretty similar.

Thanks in advance,

Thanks in advance,

DavidIf you don't have an Xbox 360, or any plan to purchase one in the near term, I'd go with the 550. They are nearly the same in function and capability, but the 360 has a few of the unique Xbox 360 buttons on its panel to allow better control of the Xbox. In place of that the 550 puts a couple of useful general purpose butons on the remote (I can't remember what functions, maybe scroll up and scroll down, but if you look at a picture of both you'll see the difference) and these would be more useful than the Xbox buttons if you don't have an Xbox.

Actually took your suggestion....after quite a bit of searching I was able to find some high res shots of both remotes. It appears that the 360 actually has 2 extra buttons that the 550 does not. From everything I've read it appears that I can reassign any buttons to whatever I like.....soooooo 360 seems to be winning. Assuming all else is equal....2 extra buttons is rather nice.

The 360 has 8 extra buttons, 4 colored buttons in the middle and 4 smaller buttons on the bottom row of the remote under the numbers. All of these can be customed programmed and come in very handy. I do not have a XBOX 360 but do own the harmony 360 remote and it is much more functionable than the 520 which I previously owned.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but I had a quick question on this remote that I was hoping to get some help with.

Can you change what it says on the LCD screen, or are you stuck with generic things like "watch tv" or "watch a dvd"? Could I get it to day "watch an HD DVD" or "play the PS3" or "play the Wii"?

Thanks in advance...

Yes you can change the name of the activities and add other functions within an activity on the LCD.

Yeah....would also like to know. Never even thought about doing that!

Also....if I turn off my 360 after playing using the controller, then go watch TV by hitting the Watch TV activity, then later shut the whole thing off by using the remotes master power button.......the 360 turns back on. Anyway to make the remote remember that I shut down the 360 already?

If you used the remote to turn on the 360, then the controller to turn it off, the remote should still think your 360 is on (because the last thing you did with it regarding the 360 was use an Activity or Device funtion to turn it on).

Safest way not to screw everything up is to just use the remote...even though the 360 controller button is very very convenient. I've made that mistake several times.

I don't use my audio receiver for TV watching, but use it for dd5.1 for the 360, so i bounce back-n-forth between direcTV and 360. hit the 360 Activity, turns on the 360, audio receiver(digital audio input), TV (if not already on) (component input) and it turns off the direcTV receiver if on. hit the TV Activity, it turns off the 360, off the audio receiver, turns on the direcTV receiver and TV (different input)...and i'm a happy guy...i can even have it dim the lights if i want to....

762x51
03-08-07, 12:09 PM
Thanks for the input. I disabled the Harmony's turning off of unused devices when choosing another activity. I sometimes like to play 360, switch to the TV (using the watch TV activity) for a bit leaving the 360 on, then switch back the the 360. Other times, I want to kill the 360 when switching to the TV. From now on I'll use the power off LCD area button for the 360 instead of the controller though. I'm hoping the Harmony remembers that way.

Is there any way to have the remote learn button controls from the original Xbox's S-type controller? I'd love to be able to have a L / R button function for quick scrolling using XBMC, but haven't been able to find a way for the remote to learn it.

pm2501

Do you mean like a page-down/page-up functionality? For the 360 that's handled by the L/R trigger buttons. Xbox 1 games have the same button scheme as 360 games, only the black and white buttons were replaced by the left and right bumpers.

I just checked the available button options and it doesn't appear that the bumpers and triggers are available to program into the remote. That's a shame.

Yeah it's very similar, if you're using the actual controller the triggers will function as a quick scroll up/down. It's nice when you're browsing a huge list of folders/files. As my disorganized music shares are full of. ;)

I think you have it programmed in for the device, but not for the activity. I did the same thing and it took me a few minutes to figure it out. Basically, you have to program it to do that in two different places.

Folks, I'm surprised more people aren't complaining about the button press delays on this thing. Do I have a bum remote or am I missing something? I have set all three delays (power on, interkey and inter-device to 0) and the number of repeats to 0.

The xbox 360 gets the commands but remote clearly lags my button presses by around half a second to a second. The standard media center remote doesn't lag at all.

Logitech has preprogrammed info but some of the commands don't work.

"chapter -" does not work. It keeps starting the same chapter over and over again. The |<< button on the remote does the same thing. It never actually goes back to the previous chapter.

"top menu" does not work. You have to press "menu" on the remote to get to the menu.

AFIK, your setup should be saved using your online profile, so you can access it from any computer anywhere as soon as you log on.

P.S. rotten bad luck about your laptop. When I travel with mine, I activate the BIOS password so that any dunghead (sorry about the language) that decides to steal it would only have a piece of junk ... small consolation though if it ever did happen.

Yup! That's what they do with the (similar) 550 too, so that people can play with the demo feature in the store (usable without opening the blister pack, obviously), as you point out. So it needs to have installed batteries for the demo function to work. The extra batteries mean the buyer will have a totally new, fresh set of batteries to replace the ones everyone was playing with while the unit was on display.

If the person asking about delay is still monitoring this thread, those delays are completely adjustable via the web interface and you can make the remote as quick as the commands can be accepted by the receiving device. I can't remember what/where the setting are on the web page but it's at the remote level I think.

Problem solved. In the first drop down for device you want to select 'Sequence' and then it will allow you to pick from the sequence you created. I was selecting PVR in the device drop down (the first sequence I created was all PVR commands so logic told me that it was the correct device) which didn't present the sequence I created. i just read through this thread and didn't see my problem mentioned, hopefully someone has a suggestion, been fighting with this problem since i got the remote a couple weeks ago:

when i switch activities, it switches my aspect ratio down to 4:3 when all my devices have native wide screen. I was thinking it had something to do with the remote sending an extra signal to my projector to 'turn on', so i used the factory remote to help the harmony 'learn' what do do. at first reprogramming the on button did the trick, it stayed 16:9 when switching sources, but then my projector couldn't be turned off through the remote. as of right now, it went back to switching to 4:3 when activities are switched, AND it still wont turn off my pj. The problem with turning off the the pj isnt a big deal, as i can go back and set the 'off' command to logitechs default, but how do i get the thing to stay in 16:9?

Anyone else manage to get it to turn off an HD1000u projector? For some reason I thought it worked out of the gate but maybe not. Now, whenever I push the power down button everything else works fine (regardless if I'm in 360 or Comcast mode) and yet I have to push the 'Help' button every time at which point it turns off the projector. Is there a fix for this? I've tried looking into the settings but don't seem to be seeing the fix. I see stuff for delay but don't see anything for a delay on the power specifically nor do I know if this will fix it anyway. I set up a third (it needs two power off commands) power off command thinking maybe it's missing the second one but that doesn't help either. The remote that comes with the pj has a separate power on and power off button with the off needing to be pressed twice to actually power it down. This seems like it should be something easy to correct but I'm not seeing a fix yet.

Thanks for the help.

The "Help" button doesn't "Learn", or change any programming. It is only to fix out-of-synch problems.

You might need to increase the Power On Delay or the Inter Device Delay for the TV, depending on when the problem occurs. Read the FAQ on the Harmony site about adjusting delays.

Okay, I'll change the delay from 500ms to 1500ms and see how that works. Not sure why they don't label it something more easy to understand though since I've been at that screen several times but wasn't sure what the other three adjusted besides Power On. Thanks!

There are descriptions of the various delays in the FAQ, under "Support".
