Thanks, Scott bass addict 08-16-07, 11:51 PM OK Someone needs to start a: I'm a poor working stiff who had to build a theater room on his own, with a budget low enough to still be able to afford to pay the mortgage, so I can still enjoy the theater thread. :D Man, I only wish I could put together some theaters as nice as you guys. Most impressive. Here's my humble contribution. :o http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL426/2023328/10303602/147496194.jpg http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL426/2023328/10303602/222181184.jpg http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL426/2023328/10303602/222181241.jpg http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL426/2023328/10303602/222162938.jpg http://pic50.picturetrail.com/VOL426/2023328/10303602/222162914.jpg HeyNow^ 08-17-07, 07:42 AM Bass Addict, Wow...Nice work! bass addict 08-17-07, 01:10 PM Thanks Randy, much appreciated. It's nowhere near the likes of the ones here but the end result is the same. To be able to enjoy the best possible picture and sound in the comfort of my own home whenever I want. :) HeyNow^ 08-20-07, 12:41 PM BTW, I have that same equipment cabinet you have (got mine at Lowes a couple of years ago). I put medium dolly wheels on it and it's easier to turn to get to the back. JrCRXHF 08-20-07, 01:57 PM Click to enlarge photos. Did you end up keeping your Ultra2 system? Yes. I had them pending a sell but ended up having to replace one speaker. They are great in a less than perfect room like mine because of the lack of any hint of brightness as well as great imaging. They are not the greatest looking boxes but they are pretty low profile. Big Worms 09-27-07, 12:05 PM Yes. I had them pending a sell but ended up having to replace one speaker. They are great in a less than perfect room like mine because of the lack of any hint of brightness as well as great imaging. They are not the greatest looking boxes but they are pretty low profile. Good for you. I finally got a chance to hear them (well atleast the front 3) at a local store and they are just amazing! Once I finally am able to build my theater room these are the bad boys I am going to use. Neuner 10-19-07, 04:53 PM 'Hallelujah, Holy $hit!' I'm DONE, I'M done, i'm dONe, done, did someway done? (oh, I still need to put in a shower door, but someone else is going to do that for me, but) I'M DONE!!!! 4 years, 3 kids and 1,000 square-feet later I have finally completed my basement project! I've been watching this thread anxious to make my mark and here I am. I did everything but the drywall finish and the main sewer stack relocation. I hope my pics aren't too big, but I don't care because I'm done. I was going to have plusher carpet, a rock wall instead of an acid-stained concrete wall, better light fixtures, remote lighting control, and a knock-down plaster finish on the walls. Oh, well - I love it the same. And now the kicker...... I didn't construct the riser for the second row because we are moving. Our home is to go on the market in about a week. HeyNow^ 10-19-07, 05:26 PM Awesome Neuner! Sorry to see you sell the house! But we all look forward to your next new project. CptnRandy 10-20-07, 08:32 AM Looks sweet, Neuner. And excellent choices for a home you won't be keeping. Good luck on selling! Randy RobZ 10-20-07, 08:59 AM Selling after all that! That sucks. I finished off my small HT room earlier this year and ended up selling it. Worst experience! The contract stated that all of my equipment would be replaced (with an Onkyo HTIB, Infocus 480P, etc.). The guy actually started trying to back out because he wanted a specific projector. My realtor ended up buying it for him to keep the sale from going south. In the end he complained that my theater entrance curtains (which cost me $300) did not stay. JoeTiVo 10-23-07, 04:49 PM Wow... there are some REALLY great transformations posted here. We struggled for a while trying to find the 'perfect' colors. I don't think we quite made it to 'perfect', but we're very happy with them. They look even better in person. I'm diggin' your theater and color scheme too. Blue was a strong finalist in our color quest. I have a Carada 126" (1.78:1) Precision BW screen and a Panasonic AX100U projector. I love them both. JoeTiVo 11-01-07, 07:36 PM any chance on some room dimensions? screen size? room size? how high up is the projector mounted from the floor and how far from the screen? Howdy... The room is approximately 21' x 13' x 7'. The ceiling goes up to just under 8' over the back riser. The projector is about 6' off the main floor and is about about 21' from the screen. The screen is a 126" 16x9 Carada BW. It's mounted right to the ceiling on the front wall (at about 7'). No. It's actually just an oak equipment cabinet I found on Craigs list for $50. I took the back off and built it into the wall from the other side. Then I painted the insides flat black. You can see how I did it in th pic below: http://steve-mann.com/unlinked/ht07/images/10_11_07/IMG_1581.JPG ntode 01-07-08, 11:56 PM How does your theater sound with the "open" wall on one side? I divided the old room in half (it was 20’ tall) vertically and built a floor/ceiling across the old tall family room space. The landing overlook acted as the entrance to the new room created out of thin air. The upper half already had HVAC and electrical. I brought in two dedicated 20 amp circuits for the HT equipment. The construction part only took two weeks. BTW, some incredible projects here guys. Thanks for sharing. Looking down on the old HT Space. Great stuff, Phil Thanks Phil, the improvement to the house's livability is amazing. I put together a small AV system down stairs and now have two terrific spaces instead of one. I was lucky in that I was able to maintain the downstairs ceiling height 10' and the new room matches the rest of the upstairs 9'. Re the paint, we used the new Greeguard Freshaire paint with no VOC’s so no fumes and quick dry (we watched a movie in the room right after finishing). The color is called "Sacred Soil". The acoustic treatments are from GIK. They are reasonably priced and very easy to hang. If the couch was "against the wall" could it still recline -- ie, does it push forward a bit when reclining, or do you need clearance behind it? What do you mean the headrest is adjustable? Other than reclining, can the headrest do something else (like get taller, or even curve forward for those of us who slouch :) ) ? landshark1 03-21-08, 04:56 PM If the couch was "against the wall" could it still recline -- ie, does it push forward a bit when reclining, or do you need clearance behind it? I didn't check and see if it'll move backward when reclining, but I would assume it will (a couple inches). as for the headrest, yes, you can adjust it to be full straight, or have it bend backward or any angle inbetween to full accommodate you head resting position. strange_brew 03-31-08, 09:43 PM Wouldn't you want to post a picture of something you actually built? Looks like a fluted carpet... I'm about ready to work mine over and am up against WAF big-time! She's really worried about the "padded room" look beacause this is a multi-use family/media room. On the flip-side, she said I could do painted below and take the padded stuff (1" Linacoustic) up to the ceiling. Which one would you guys suggest? Great work... Any comments on the effectiveness of your acoustic treatments? Nice looking room. May I ask where you got your acoustic panels? WonHung 04-07-08, 12:52 PM Thanks guys. Actually, it's more of a beige, tannish room. LOL. My digital camera seems to add a bit of coloration to pics taken in this room due to the lighting. The acoustical treatments were purchased through http://www.acousticalsolutions.com . They've been great through out this whole project. I actually started initial dialogue with them about 3 years ago. Due to budgetary issues, I was only able to purchase the panels recently. They've been great with answering my questions and consulting on where the panels should be placed. The difference is remarkable. Bass is tight, deep, and extended without boominess or "ringing". The biggest difference is with the mids/highs. My ears would bleed at high listening levels. I now find myself cranking the system up to levels that would have made me cringe. Vocal/instrument imaging is much better. I also found an interesting artifact after hanging the panels. A lot of my speakers are now calibrated closer to each other from when I had them adjusted without the room treatments. The front left speaker was about 2.5-3.5 dB over boosted from the center and right front speaker. The rear surrounds were 2 dB hotter. I still have to dial in the bass in the room to see if I can tweak it a bit better. Overall, very glad I spent the money and time to get the treatments in. I still have some final touch up tweaking to do. I'll be ordering some ceiling treatments and a panel to place behind the center. It can't be overly stressed that the room is equally important in the ultimate sound you get. Also, keep in mind, the plan I went about doing this room was with music as the main focus. The plan on how the room finally came together was through consultations with the people at Acoustical Solutions. Hence why there isn't any wall to wall carpeting as I had originally planned. xradman 04-09-08, 06:13 PM My humble before and after pics. The room is a little alcove out of a general basement rec room which also double as my home office. The HT section is 12.5' by 15'. The front wall used for the screen is ~12' wide by 9' high. The door on the left leads into the utility/storage room. http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Front-Old.jpg I started with a custom crown and side molding to better define the front screen area. The work was done by a good friend of mine for the cost of materials (~$1,000) http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Front-Mold.jpg I then finished it off with black fabric for the ceiling (needed to be completely reversible per wife), custom made black velvet masking (to create a 16:9 viewing area), and black velvet curtains for the side walls (hides the door on the left). http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Front-1.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Front-3.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Left.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/HT-Right.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/Seats-Coaster.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/Equip-1.jpg http://xradman.com/pics/ht/2008HTUpgrade/Projector-2.jpg Johnson Nguyen 04-10-08, 12:47 PM Jesus Christ I can't believe the kind of home theatre system you have there. That is sweet looking setup you have there Don. Love the colors. hifisponge 07-05-08, 03:11 AM Hello all - My first post in this area of the forum. :) I've been kicking around the idea of acoustically treating my HT / Music / Family room for a while, but I wanted to find an option that would improve the acoustics of the room in a discrete way--no acoustic panels on the walls. I finally broke down and hired a professional acoustician. He has dealt with several such situations before, where the client wants the room to look like a normal living space. Without any hesitation, he said that an "acoustic cloud" would help considerably. It's not as effective as wall treatment, but it is supposed to still make a noticeable improvement to the general sound quality. I will find out soon enough. I also have limited placement options for the front speakers, so the right speaker is too close to the sidewall. That wall will be gutted and filled with absorptive material and covered with fabric that matches the existing wall color. It's not clear if those armrests are in the sweet spot or offset. John St 07-17-08, 01:49 PM Very nice transformation. Thanks, Nathan. I had it very easy compared to your project (I just read through your HT construction thread, which I found fascinating). Man, you had some very significant challenges to overcome. You did an amazing job. The transformation is outstanding. Is there a way to sit in the sweet spot? It's not clear if those armrests are in the sweet spot or offset. Yeah, technically the two center seats are slightly offset an equal amount from perfect center, but it doesn't bother me in the least. The screen is big enough that I feel like I'm on-center when I'm watching a film. Of course the seats are Berklines, so it would be very easy for me to shift things around temporarily if I'm watching a movie solo and am so inclined. John St 07-19-08, 07:59 AM Phase 2 of my lobby area was completed last night. The lobby area was an empty bonus room on the second floor of my home, just around the corner from the theater room. Phase 3 will improve on what you see here with an upright multi-arcade game, a pinball machine and more decorative touches. Here's the before: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_before.jpg After shots. I've included descriptions and links for those who might be interested. :) This is the view as you come up the stairs and then turn towards the lobby: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_snacks_wide.jpg Here's the main concession area. The retro-style Coca-Cola napkin dispenser (http://www.retroplanet.com/PROD/7205) and glass Coca-Cola straw dispenser (http://www.retroplanet.com/PROD/7204) can be seen on the left hand side of the display case. The illuminated buttery topping dispenser & warmer (http://www.stargatecinema.com/Popcorn-Buttery-Topping-Dispenser-pr-16379.html) is on the right side of the display case: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_snacks_close.jpg Here's a view of the candy in the 48" concession display w/lock (http://www.achievedisplay.com/proddetail.asp?prod=DWSGCX). Some of the candy was purchased locally at Costco, but most of it had to be special ordered (http://www.oldtimecandy.com/). From top left to bottom right: Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, Kit Kats, Orbit Chewing Gum, Sno-Caps, Snickers, M&Ms, Junior Mints, Assorted nuts, Peppermint Patties, Whoppers, Raisinets and Goobers: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_candy.jpg Here's the Paragon 6oz Theater Pop popcorn machine (http://www.stargatecinema.com/Theater-6oz-Popcorn-Machine-pr-16279.html) and its matching stand (http://www.concessionstands.com/s.nl/it.A/id.21145/.f). Inside the popcorn machine is a stainless steel popcorn scoop (http://www.stargatecinema.com/Stainless-Steel-Popcorn-Scoop-pr-16333.html). On the wall behind the popcorn machine is a decorative "Dancing Popcorn" metal wall sign (http://www.retroplanet.com/PROD/23044): http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_popcorn_machine.jpg This is the top shelf inside the popcorn machine stand. In this view you can see a small supply of large popcorn tubs (http://www.instawares.com/popcorn-tub-170-oz.gmp-2170rb.0.7.htm) and medium "pop open" popcorn cartons (http://www.instawares.com/medium-scoop-popcorn-boxes.gmp-2060.0.7.htm). In order to save money I purchased these items by the case. The extra popcorn cartons and tubs are stored in the theater's big A/V closet: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_top_storage.jpg This is the bottom shelf inside the popcorn machine stand. Here you can see a few bottles of Odell's "Supur Kist-Two" movie theater popcorn topping (http://www.stargatecinema.com/Buttery-Topping-Case-of-6-16-oz-bottles-pr-16352.html) along with a supply of 32oz waxed cups (http://www.instawares.com/sweetheart-jumbo-drink-treated.h32tnjazz.0.7.htm) and matching lids (http://www.instawares.com/plastic-cold-cup-lid.sccl32bn.0.7.htm). Like the popcorn tubs, these items are cheaper by the case. In addition to what you see here, I've got an ample supply stored in the A/V closet: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_bottom_storage.jpg This is the Frigidaire Compact Refrigerator/Freezer (http://www.lowes.com/lowes/lkn?action=productDetail&productId=235882-47224-FRT045GM&lpage=none). On top of the fridge you can see a couple different brands of popcorn packs in the large popcorn tubs. On the left I've got a good supply of Great American popcorn packs (http://mall.johnstonefitness.com/shop.php?i=B000PDY3P0), and on the right I've got some Gold Medal "MegaPop" popcorn packs (http://www.stargatecinema.com/6-oz-MegaPop-Popcorn-Packs-pr-16310.html). Both are excellent: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_fridge_ext.jpg There's plenty of room in the refrigerator: it holds around (50) 12oz beverages and (8) 24oz bottles of water--with room to spare. The fridge can easily keep these drinks just above freezing (and, as I found out, below freezing if you set the temperature controls to low): http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_fridge_int.jpg There's plenty of room in the freezer for a large quantity of ice. The freezer has no problem going sub-zero: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_freezer_int.jpg Looking towards the lobby's half-wall, you can see the retro popcorn-themed bullet trashcan (http://www.retroplanet.com/PROD/25687). In Phase 3 a stand up multi-arcade game will be added just to the left of the trash can: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_trash_wide.jpg Here's a closer shot of the trash can: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_trash.jpg Here's another movie poster. You may have noticed "The Terminator" movie poster in some of the earlier shots. All the movie posters were ordered from movieposter.com (http://www.movieposter.com/). In addition to what you see in the pictures on this page, I've got a bunch of other movie posters that can be rotated into use with ease. The posters are housed in SpeedLock movie poster frames (http://www.stargatecinema.com/Deluxe-SpeedLock-Movie-Poster-Frame-pr-20.html). These frames make changing the posters out a snap. A pinball machine will be added just to the right of the movie poster (in front of the window) in Phase 3: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_poster.jpg Here's my DVD, HD-DVD and Blu-ray collection, which is currently around 1,500 titles. The tall DVD Wall Unit (http://www.thejungles.com/atoses10.html) on the left houses my HD-DVDs and Blu-ray DVDs, while the two large DVD wall units (http://www.thejungles.com/mulwal15.html) hold my standard definition DVD collection: http://www.twowiresthin.com/ht/images/lobby_p2_complete_dvds.jpg As mentioned above, for Phase 3 I'll be adding a stand up multi-arcade machine along with a pinball machine. I'll also be adding some more decorative items, such as a custom illuminated theater sign and so on. HeyNow^ 07-19-08, 10:54 AM I love it! Wonderful work! nathan_h 07-19-08, 12:58 PM Awesome lobby. As you might notice from my HT construction thread, there is an ante-room (small) prior to entering my theater. Right now, it's filled with a treadmill, and equipment rack. Once I rebuild the garden shed with a window, electricity, and insulation the treadmill will be moved to the shed -- and I'll be able to build a small lobby area. I cannot wait. That really is a key part of the experience. Of course, I should also get some better seats..... John St 07-19-08, 05:32 PM I love it! Wonderful work! Thanks! Looks very nice considering the budget and WAF! BTW, did you test the sound before and after your acoustic wall treatment? What size/materials are they? tx_flip 08-27-08, 05:23 PM Thanks for the compliment. I got them from ATSAcoustics. I could tell a difference doing the good old 'clap' test with the scenarios - room without furniture, room with furniture, then with furniture and panels (no test with just panels alone). The additions was not a night and day change but still an improvement. The cushy furniture of course had the largest impact obviously but I do believe the panels really helped. If you run into larger empty space I do highly recommend. I believe mine are the 24x48x2. defboob 08-27-08, 10:43 PM here's my before/after: http://bradboob.com/theater/before.jpg http://bradboob.com/theater/after.jpg gnolivos 08-29-08, 08:31 AM Before: http://designopportunity.com/images/B%204%20C%20BR%20Storage%20Room%20Dec%2007%20003.JPG After: http://static.boydgaming.net/samstownlv/images/lightbox/600x400_movie1.jpg :D RockyF 08-29-08, 09:16 AM Before: http://designopportunity.com/images/B%204%20C%20BR%20Storage%20Room%20Dec%2007%20003.JPG After: http://static.boydgaming.net/samstownlv/images/lightbox/600x400_movie1.jpg :D Dude, what a great use of space! :D antwon412 08-29-08, 10:17 AM i dont know. screen looks kinda small. and i dont really see a "sweet spot" little too much red also. it sucks. try again tx_flip 08-29-08, 11:36 AM What is this? The interesting thing about the "before" and "after" pictures is that they were taken exactly one year apart. I was originally going to do a whole construction thread and call it "What a Difference a Year Makes!" Just never got around to it. The majority of the work on this room took place between June of '06 and January of '07, when my wife started cracking the whip on me to keep get the project finished. By that time I was getting pretty tired of spending all my spare time down there, but unbeknowst to me my wife was planning a surprise 50th birthday party, which she managed to pull off without me having the slightest clue (insert joke here.) What kind of beverage center is that under your back bar and does it cool your drinks cold enough? I am looking at sort of the same set up. -Brett I got that at Home Depot after seeing it in Chinadog's "Blazing Ridge" (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=549924)thread about 2 1/2 years ago. The brand was Magic Chef but I have seen the same unit under other brand names. It is definitely gets progressivly colder from top to bottom shelf (there is no internal fan to circulate the air.) The bottom half is certainly cold enough for beer as far as I'm concerned, the top half a little warmer but still pretty cool. It will easily hold three or four cases of beer. I wanted a commercial look (glass door and stainless steel,) and this unit at about $300 was the cheapest I could find by far at the time. You may notice I was using it during construction, it was the first thing I bought, even before the thrice-weekly trips to the big box stores started. I had to start somewhere, and it became sort of an inspiration piece! Of course it occasionally became the biggest impediment to further progress too, if you catch my drift. I finished up the framing creating an office, utility room, left a storage room unfinished for now and finally created a large media / entertaining room with a partially completed wet bar & mini fridge in the back. http://gallery.avsforum.com/uploads/69597/before12.jpg I contracted out the electrical & drywall due to timing constraints and the fact that I can't stand mud work. However I did the framing, insulation, low voltage wiring, trim work, painting, cabinet installs etc. myself. Still got more to do but at least the space is now usable. I still need to do the counter tops and bar top. http://gallery.avsforum.com/uploads/69597/after21.jpg I'm planning on building the equipment console in the next few weeks that will sit under the plasma. The plans call for something similar to a BDI but sized to provide the necessary airflow and space for my receiver and other components as well as provide media storage. One thing that did get overlooked was no outlet in the floor as at the time I hadn't considered powered recliners :(. We'll probably just put an area rug in front of the chairs and run the cord up front under the yet to be built media stand. I finished up the acoustic panels a couple of weeks ago and they made a HUGE difference in the room. The panel frames are made from 3/4" ply and are 2.5" thick with 2" OC703 and I've got 4.5" frames with 4" of OC703 covering the corners. The extra 1/2" provides the stapling ledge and make it easy to hang the panels. The fabric is a polyester from JoAnn's the was $6.99/yd. and I had a 40% off coupon! Also got a nice pneumatic stapler from Menards for only $29.99. Saved about $300 by building my own panels which, when combined with the savings from building my own console, will more than cover the cost of the new table saw ;) The pictures don't really show the true colors as the walls are a fairly dark gray green with a slightly lighter ceiling. The image has had the colors adjusted to better reflect what they look like. Hopefully the ceiling won't be too much of an issue down the road when I go to a projector as I pre-wired for that as well. http://gallery.avsforum.com/uploads/69597/after11.jpg I'm still looking at preferred light control solutions for daytime use but think I've settled on light blocking pleated blinds. I've thought about building a panel for the windows but I still have more corner panels to construct first. Weasel9992 11-23-08, 08:57 PM Man...looks great. Nice job on the panels! Some of the most amazing work I've seen. I can only hope my "Theater" comes out 1/2 as nice. Mike csamos 01-15-09, 10:48 AM I just discovered this thread, so I thought I'd post a few before/after pics of my theater. The room began life as a loft area above the living room, with just a railing across the front of the room and windows at the back: http://www.samos.org/NewHouse/IntStairs2.jpg http://www.samos.org/Theater/TheaterBefore.jpg http://www.samos.org/NewHouse/IntGameRoom1.jpg A friend of mine who is a master carpenter and I did all of the work ourselves, over the course of about 10 months in our spare time. The screen sits on a new wall we built where the railing used to be. Version 1 was finished in January of 2004 and ended up looking like this (large panoramic image that you'll probably need to scroll right to see): http://www.samos.org/Theater/Theater6.jpg The amber faux finish looked really nice with the lights on for when we play pinball or the arcade machine. But I realize that it's not the best color scheme for movies. Ultimately we end up using the room for movies 99% of the time. Version 2 (completed November 2008) consisted of a complete color scheme change (except the carpet), as well as moving from a 6.1 to a 7.1 audio setup with several bass traps. These changes made a huge difference. http://www.samos.org/Theater/TheaterPanoramicBlue8-500.jpg Version 2.1 (completed last night!) adds acoustic panels on the walls and ceiling to reduce first reflections. I've only sampled a few scenes so far, but the audio improvement is incredible. We watched the asteroid chase scene from Star Wars Episode II, and even my girlfriend was amazed at the difference in the sound. Here are some of the panels, all 2" thick with 2" air gaps: http://www.samos.org/Theater/DSC02880-.jpg http://www.samos.org/Theater/DSC02885-.jpg There are a lot more pictures on my theater page in my signature. Fun stuff! JustMike 01-15-09, 12:32 PM Nice job! I really like your in-wall rack. Question about the carpet: do you find the light color distracting during the movie at all? I love watching movies at home. We never go to mainstream theaters, only the Alamo Drafthouse in Austin, which has full wait service, great beer and food and fun movies. We have movie nights at the house almost weekly. The next is Saturday in fact. We're starting to show the Lord of the Rings trilogy over the course of three Saturday afternoons. Unfortunately I didn't replace the original carpet when we built the theater. The color doesn't seem to affect the movie viewing much though as I never really notice it while watching a movie, but when I have the chance I'll put in a different color for at least aesthetic reasons. The built-in component cabinet is awesome. There's just attic space behind there, so access to the rear of the components is through one large door that covers the entire back of the cabinet that swings open. It's so easy to make changes, add/replace components, etc. Next I'm thinking of flush-mounting a black mini-fridge on that same wall in the aisle of the back row. That way people can bring up extra drinks and store them there instead of having to go down to the kitchen or beer fridge for more. :) Nice job! I really like your in-wall rack. Question about the carpet: do you find the light color distracting during the movie at all? My existing room has an off-white carpet, and I'm wondering if that really needs to go or not. If so, the image is deceiving. Those lines are not wires precisely. They are wires surrounded with wire wrap to make it look nicer. So, while the speaker wire inside is 12 and 14 guage (speakers were bi-wired), they are surrounded with wire wrap and it ends up looking like a garden hose coming out of the wall. Especially things that you ran into that you didn't expect or things you'd do differently? I had planned a curved stage but my oldest daughter wanted the stage as big as possible so she could perform and do cart wheels. So I did the basic straight rectangle that is 4' deep. Any bigger and it really cuts in to the room and any smaller and I am in trouble. :) The kids love running around the room. Jumping on to the riser, around the front row, on to the stage and back again. I have been up and running for almost 4 months now and as far as the stage is concerned it worked I would not change a thing. It was really pretty cut and dried. My biggest concern was it would be too big and look odd but the scale looks fine. 4 foot stage in a 23 foot deep room. Awesome, by the way! Probably took much less time to build than your previous one as well.. Sorry, didn't see the post earlier. I'm using the Sharp DT-500 on high-brightness mode rated 1200 lumens and 73% on the bulb. On first showings I was afraid it wouldn't be bright enough but that was quickly put to rest. It is plenty bright! Sitting back about 30-35 feet it lights up the 220" BOC screen enough to see where you are walking. The image is bright enough that I can start the movie a little after the sun has disappeared off of the horizon but there is still a little bit of glow in the sky. You can see how much light is out in the screen shot with the Walt Disney logo on the screen and the audience. It helps that the screen backs to the sun setting. Just like any theater, the upgrades and changes never stop. Since the picture posts on this thread I've added speaker perches on the screen frame to get them up higher. Next season I'm going to build a semi-permanent screen that I will paint with a DIY mix of Silver-Fire that can be dropped and stored in the garage. The comments are awesome the first time a guest sees the image. Their jaw drops and I hear, 'Holy $h!t'. They then give a weird glance as they realize children are standing around them. Terminator840 10-28-09, 11:58 PM Here are my before and afters. Of course my theater is still a work in progress, got most of it painted in the last couple of weeks. We moved in our current house last December and it already had a fully finished basement, which was nice but limits my HT conversion. Since the house is only 2 years old, I didn't want to rip out drywall and stuff just to redo it for the HT plus that would add expense and my budget is really, really small so I worked around it. This is the room in the basement I thought was best suited for the HT, even though it has that nasty support beam going down the ceiling and the poe right in the middle of the room. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_1622.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_1623.jpg Looking back into the rest of the basement, I like the room divider but I wished it was about 2 feet further back. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_1624.jpg The open area and under stairs closet, maybe future bar and pool table area. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_1625.jpg Star Wars Tilogy meets you as you reach the bottom of the stairs http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2095.jpg More movie posters http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2096.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2097.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2099.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2102.jpg Terminator840 10-29-09, 12:11 AM And the After pics. http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2148.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2157.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2150.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2155.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2244.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2245.jpg http://i162.photobucket.com/albums/t268/30thz286speed/100_2243.jpg Colors: Wall: Valspar Royal Garnet, Accent and Ceiling: Oylimpic Black Magic, Trim: Oylimpic Victorian Pewter tleavit 10-29-09, 12:42 AM I haven't posted back in this thread in a while. If needed, I plan on adding more acoustic treatments, but I need some time to do some frequency measurements first. ...and that's the way it is with many (if not most) of the HT's that are done that well. Typically a lot of thought goes into the acoustics because the owner has to marry form and function pretty seamlessly. Most of the time in my experience it's just like CJ said...you may have to add a bass trap or two here and there to smooth things out. Frank hifibitn 11-11-09, 12:54 PM I promise not to go on too long and risk thread hijack, but, I am struggling a bit to understand the difference between Sound Isolation (which I think of as keeping sound in) and Sound Management (which I think of as taming undesireable acoustic conditions within the room). Sound Isolation is not an issue for me. I am more concerned with taming undesireable issues (ringing, vocal clarity, etc.) I would assume this is the goal of many other folks here who are essentially building custom HT/Game rooms so it was just striking to see so many HT with little or no acoustic paneling. Bass trapping I agree is harder to see (or easier to hide, usually stuffed into a corner or soffit) but Mid and High range acoustical management is (normally?) much more apparent. BTW: Reviewing the various panel makers/installers offers little information as well, either specifically or anecdotally (e.g., pictures of installs) as most of the time the panels are on the wall in a standard grid or in a way that seems to offer little more than making acoustical treaments look more like wall art. So, I am left with plowing through the 180+ pages of the Acoustical Treatments thread or using the simple basics of Mirror on wall +1-2' L/R/U/D and a few other panels smattered in other possible positions (e.g., behind LRC as well as seating postion to address echo/rining). Of course I could just spend 2x the money and hire someone who will spend 2x more than I would have... the question is: is 4x the money going to get me that much more than what I would have spent using my much less scientific methods...? I fear I am becoming another case study for the "what I should have done" thread. @CJO - BTW your build thread is very good at trying to pull info together for other folks to use as some sort of a reference. Thank you for taking the time to maintain/compile the summary in your OP vs. forcing the reader to scan dozens and sometimes hundreds of pages. |
