BTW: Reviewing the various panel makers/installers offers little information as well, either specifically or anecdotally (e.g., pictures of installs) as most of the time the panels are on the wall in a standard grid or in a way that seems to offer little more than making acoustical treaments look more like wall art. So, I am left with plowing through the 180+ pages of the Acoustical Treatments thread or using the simple basics of Mirror on wall +1-2' L/R/U/D and a few other panels smattered in other possible positions (e.g., behind LRC as well as seating postion to address echo/rining). Of course I could just spend 2x the money and hire someone who will spend 2x more than I would have... the question is: is 4x the money going to get me that much more than what I would have spent using my much less scientific methods...? I fear I am becoming another case study for the "what I should have done" thread.

What specifically do you want to know?

Mr. Baker --

I saw a bit of discussion on it in this thread, but can you talk about how specifically you enclosed those openings on your columns and walls, which house the speakers? I think that's a real interesting way to unobtrusively locate speakers.

Thanks,

Steve

This may be a stupid question, but how hard is it to run wire through your wall into your ceiling? How do you get the wire from the bottom of the wall say, to come out your ceiling? thanks

Interior wall or exterior wall? If you have insulation in it, it's a lot harder. If it's an interior wall then it's probably not insulated and it's just a matter of drilling through the top from the attic, dropping a fish tape, then fishing the wire up the wall cavity.

I think much more of a factor is whether there's an attic above or not. You still need to get the wire from the hole in the top plates of the wall across to where you want it in the room. If it's already drywalled and it's between floors, you have to rip out drywall to run it, most likely. If it's the top floor, you can go in the attic to run it.

True. I also realized that whether or not there are purlins between the studs makes a huge difference too. If there are, then you have to be able to drill from the top all the way through them...or insert the wire above them.

THanks for the response guys. Its the living room with drywall. Mywife would flip if I ripped out the dry wall. Is there anoter way? I hope so. Anyone here with a projector setup that doesnt run HDMI wire and power wire through the wall?

It also depends on which way the joists run. If they run parallel to the way you need, a strong magnet and a steel chain work well. LSD sells a kit for this.

Here is another silly question, how do you get the power cord of your projector to the outlet if you dont have an outlet nearby? Is it safe to run an extension cord through the walls?

Here's a video of as my home theater exists today:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5tdPhaNAUY

and:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pnaf337YU0

After I blow out a wall and remodel my room, I plan on adding a CIH projection system. This is a 3-4 year plan (thanks to my daughters tuition). I have most of the equipment now, but will add 4 more speakers, a couple of amps, a screen and projector (Epson Pro Cinema 9500 UB is looking good) and some theater seating.

I created this 3D animation of how I'd like to set up a home cinema. The animation was created using Autodesk Inventor 3D software.

Keep in mind that this is in the early planning stages. Don't forget to watch in HD!!

Thanks, I'm using an older line of Reference models.

2x RF-5 (L+R)
1x RC-7 (center)
4x RS-3 (side and back surrounds)

I worked for a dealer back in 1999-2001 and I like this Reference line better than what Klipsch offers today. Some think they are more "harsh" but I like the dynamics. Of course, I'm 100% Movies/Video games. I do not do any critical music listening.

I made the sign myself using images from the site that is featured on the thread that is linked above. Pretty cool site with hundreds of logo images. I just used 4x6 photo paper and printed them out. Then I bought a cheap frame at Wal-Mart.
Most people make them full sheets of 8x11, but I wanted to feature more items so I thought making them smaller in a all in one frame would look better.

I guess I need to update my sign since my theater is no longer DLP. ;)

Three questions:

1) What's the ceiling treatment above your seats?
2) I like how you mounted your projector. I assume that the other two holes are for ventilation? How's the sound level, and are you using supplemental fans at all?
3) Can you share where you got your bar stools. They look like just what I'm looking for.

Hope you're really enjoying it!

IPT,

Thanks. Four years to complete the entire basement. The bar was a project that spun out of control after I started. I wanted something simple but the perfectionist in me couldn't let it go. The trim wasn't the hard part it was the sanding and staining that took a lot of patience.

I'm thinking about upgrading my speakers and AVR alreay. Your set up looks great, how does it sound? What speakers/subs are you using?

LOL - I hear you on the perfectionist thing! My g/f was getting all irritated at me saying "it doesn't even matter, you barely see it" when I was making sure things were level and so on. She may barely see it, I on the other hand knew I would be blinded by it. In all likelyhood the flaws is all I would see if I left them!

I have all Energy Speakers. LCR for the center, RC -30's on the front R and L, and RCR's for the rears. Snatched them up when they were blowing them out on clearance. I also just built a Rythmik 15" sealed HP (600 watts) 4 cu/ft Sub. Overall I really like the sound. I still need to tweak it some as I have yet to do any real calibration or even SPL testing. It has a great smooth but quite clear sound. I will likly add a second sub just because there are some real dead spaces in the room. Plus I like bass :).

Nice. But what is that wood on the floor? Not pressure treated? Or was that just for eye-balling purposes?

I was trying to figure out the dimensions of the room. I had alot of obstacles, duct work, main drain, water heater and the ejector pit. I marked off the area and decided the best I could do was an 11X24 theater.

And yes, that was 2X6 pressure treated on the floor.

Here are some pics of my basement before I did the DIY renovation. It was a big, cavernous room that the previous owners finished, but didn't have a vision for a proper home theater. So the rear speakers were way up high in a top corner far from the seating area, and all hardware was up at the front of the room where you see the trunk and pillows stacked.

The project took 2 months without the fine tuning and I did most of the work myself in the evenings until I need some help to get it done in time for my son's birth.

After pictures to follow in the next post.

Also, here's the related project for a kegerator in the adjacent wine cellar:

Very nice HT transformation, but you GOT to make a separate build thread to show in detail how you built that DIY kegerator system! That's sick awesome! Where did you come up with that idea?!

There are a lot of guys 'round these parts who have built/are building bars who would love to see the details of how you did that! You have most of the photos, and some explanation on your Flickr pages, but if you post them here I think you would have a lot of appreciative guys!

I'll admit that it was partly an accidental design. I didn't quite know how to approach having a nice tap design that would fit in that narrow space. I also wanted to build my own kegerator for my homebrew.

I got some inspiration from the Micromatic forum dedicated to kegerators (http://www.micromatic.com/forum/us-en/kegerators-kegerator-kits-home/). Here's another good example on how to (http://www.micromatic.com/forum/us-en/kegerators-kegerator-kits-home/8186-my-new-draft-system-how-do.html).

I was lucky in that I had an open room behind the area where I wanted to put the taps. The freezer kegerator conversion is well documented in many places, but what I did that was a little different was the line cooling system and the simple oak plate, table, and copper drip tray.

I'll start a thread with a how-to when I have more time.

Thank you cuzed2,

The room is narrow in the back riser, 126" wide (10.5 feet), just enough room for the Berk 12011's. Front is better, 156" (13 feet). Length was 26 feet long, so plenty of room. Back row is 2 feet off the back wall.

Agree, I'm working on adding some wall panels at the first reflection and on the back wall. The soffits are fabric bottom, bass traps and I also have full bass traps and OC703 behind the screen wall. It sounds ok right now, but can be much better.

Glad you like 3D Glasses i had no were to put them so i just drilled some holes in the shelves i built.

The 3D output on the Sony works great. i was a little worried ! it wouldn't have the signal strength for the blue-jean cat-2 25ft HDMI cable i had bought. its a long distance for a budget receiver but it all works with no drop outs at all.

The bar still needs some TLC still waiting on some materials for that project should be done end of January. will post pics when done

wow, those rooms are awesome.. so most of you guys built them yourselves?
you guys are professional builders? must be, I can't even build a pencil case! LOL
what are some of the prices for these builds?

ModestHT
12-17-11, 11:34 AM
Ha, that's a can of worms :) Prices will range widely depending on the sort of finished materials you select. I think most of the guys on this forum do end up building much of their projects themselves and many of us (me included) are weekend hacks and not "professional builders". This forum is a great resource to learn and the people here are more than happy to help!

Of course, it comes down to having the time and perseverance to tackle these large projects yourself. In most cases, these projects take most of us 2-3 years from start to finish. For me, it took 2 1/2 years working most weekends and 1 or 2 weeknights every week. It's hard to find the necessary time with a family. It's fun but does get tiring over such a long period of time.

Don't forget to watch in HD!!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TYMqREsioQo

I bet those JL gothams rock the house.I've owned alot of JL subs and amps in different car audio setups and they always pound especially the W7's i got back in 2000 when they first came out.Know i'm out of car audio i'm giving home audio a shot, but these gotham's seem to be really exspensive.Besides directly from JL audio where can you find the gotham setups?
