Room is beautiful.....layout is excellent. Curious on the the room size as well.
BuffBakerGA 01-10-06, 08:18 AM The bar/game room is 15x26 and the HT room is 15x24. For a 110" screen, the first row of Berks (088) viewing position is right at 12' and the second row of 090s is right at 18' or 19'...

I'll post my "After" shots when I get there! I'm a little ways off though.
Love your theater and basement, BTW.

JasonSmith 01-10-06, 03:19 PM Buff, your home theater is remarkable! Hopefully one day I'll be able to create an HT to somewhat compete with that. You asked for other people's before and after pictures, so here are mine, although they are definitely in an amateur class compared to you.

Please be gentle with any criticism :-) This was two years ago, and my budget was only $300 (not counting the $700 spent on the projector). I was renting the house from a friend so I didn't want to invest too much money knowing I was buying a house in the forseeable future.

Bucsroom 01-11-06, 02:17 PM Buff,
Beautiful work! I will have a similarly designed room soon (assuming the building permit ever gets approved-- three months and counting). I have an existing 18' x 15' pool table/bar area and am adding a 25' x 15' HT addition. The HT will butt up against the existing room with the left HT wall partially open like yours. Here's my question, how are the acoustics with one wall open? Did you do something special to get proper balance, etc.?

HT Nitwit 01-12-06, 10:53 AM I absolutely love your room! I am wanting to do something similar to that as well, but with a darker carpet. What kind of equipment are you using?
Thanks! I actually wanted to do a darker carpet in the room, too. But there were many factors that did not allow me to do this. Mainly because my house is very open and there is no real way to redo the carpet without it clashing horrendously with the stuff I have upstairs. There are no doors for going into the basement and an open area to look down to the basement from the hallway, so everything is open for one to see.
As for the equipment, here it is:
BenQ8700+ DLP projector
Carada 110" Brilliant white screen
Paradigm Studio 100 v2s
Paradigm Studio CC v2
Paradigm Studio ADP450 v2
Paradigm Studio 20 v2
Sunfire Solitaire 10 True EQ sub
Denon AVR 3803
B&K Reference 200.7 (200x7) amp
Denon DVD 3910
Sony 300 disc CD changer
Dish Network 811 HD satellite tuner
Geffen DVI switcher
JVC tape deck
Xbox
PS2
server computer w/ bluetooth key board and mouse
Adcom power filter
X10 IR receiver for for controlling lighting
and finally..... Logitech Harmony 880 remote
COACH2369 01-12-06, 03:21 PM You have some very nice equipment! I think I am going to bust out my before and after pics tonight and post them..

I love your room as well and was also looking for a little more info...
What are the dimensions of the room? And how of the theater is open to the hallway? It looks quite dark in the screen area... Do you have a problem with light and sound control with that openness?
I keep flipping back and forth between an open rear wall in my theater and closing it up. Coming in here keeps convincing me to close it up tight though I think that the openness will serve my family better...
Great job. BuffBaker's theater is truly stunning as well and the first time I have pictures of that space finished. What a great thread...
BuffBakerGA 01-12-06, 04:19 PM Thanks for the positive support... Let me just say that the wife had absolutely no idea it was going to turn out this nice and she was shocked that I was able to made all of the decisions without her :D I hope she doesn't expect this with all of my projects...
Chinadog: You'll be finished before you know it. (I've been following your progress on your thread) Keep hacking at it...
JasonSmith: I love how you decided to painted the blocks. It has that "back office of the Sopranos" look to it.
David: I'll have to check with Congress/Wife :D Right now I'm just trying to get it 100% completed before the SuperBowl...
Clarence: Very nice. Did you faux the walls or is that wallpaper? I see you went the stain route as well. This was my first time working with this much stain and the only thing that I didn't like about it was that I had to do 2 coats and we had to have perfect cuts...
Nitwit: I like your colors. I like how you decided to keep the closet and make it into a rack rather than rip it out. Way to make an existing room work. How do you like the Paradigms? I've got the monitor set and love it...
Bucsroom: The acoustics are great. Once the carpet and chairs went in it really quieted the room. I was worried about the sound as well but the Yamaha's auto calibrating (YPAO) system takes care of most of it. The open route was the best route because will entertaining, it keeps all the guests in the same area so everybody feels included. After New Years, our neighborhood club house party ended a 1am so every one decided to head up to my house. We put in a live concert dvd and some watched, some threw darts, and some just keep on drinking. They didn't leave to 4:30am...
Keep the pictures coming. Hopefully these pictures will help some people who are on the fence with their own designs and layouts...

Thanks! I wish I could have come away with a design as nice as yours, but the budget was eaten up mostly by the equipment.
Unfortunately I had to leave the closet there, because of a sump pit and all the plumbing for that. If I could have gotten away with it, the closet would have been gone and the audio rack would have been built into the right wall, which is the HVAC room. Then I could have gone with a bigger screen :p
I love the Paradigms. I tested the speakers in store, but I found someone on another forum selling the 100, CC and 20s (only a month used). I got one hell of a deal for all 5. Later I found out the same guy was selling his other speakers he bought to replace the paradigms and he was joking he wanted his old ones back, because he blew it and got rid of his best speakers. And once I picked up some ADP450s off ebay, I completed the set. I won't replace these anytime soon

My theater is 15'x26'. It's quite deep. I still have plenty of room to do a bar table, like BuffBakerGA (I love that idea). No problem with light and sound control. Here are a few pics to get a better perspective of the theater and the issue with openess. The openess of the area limited me to the carpet type than light control. Here are a few pics to give you an idea.
The back of the theater (ignore the stuff on the floor). It is all put away. Also all those remotes are now gone. The small window in the back has been blocked up with a felt covered sheet of plywood with a handle, which is behind the velvet red curtains
http://audiworld.downeymillgroup.com/other/room_back.jpg
Here is one way to deal with the light issue if a lot of light does try to come down the steps. If need be, the curtains can be closed.

What equipment are you using? (Projector, screen, audio, etc) ? Was that bar hand built?
All I can say is WOW!

This was my first time working with this much stain and the only thing that I didn't like about it was that I had to do 2 coats and we had to have perfect cuts...The top half is patterned drapery fabric. The bottom half is black suede. On top of 1" Linacoustic sound treatment insulation. We did 5 coats of mahogany stain on th echair rail, crown moulding, and baseboards.
My next project is a 3rd row bar just like you've got. I like the raised ledge on the back edge... that might help keep a plate of nachos or a pint of beer from falling onto the 2nd row.
chinadog 01-13-06, 08:58 AM Buff,
Question for you on the wood trim around your riser. Is it recessed at all into the top of the riser or did you just mitre and secure to the top of the riser? I think that's a wonderful touch. Instead of having the carpet just come up over the riser (with or without a lip), it gives it a nice finished look. Looks like the carpet is pretty much even with the top of the wood. I purposely did not route the ply on top of the riser and stage, I was going to just add some half round to create a lip, but I like the wood look at least for the riser.
Also, is that a standard piece of wood rounded over or did you pick it up somewhere?
Bud

Clarence,
Do you have the Linacoustic behind both the top and bottom fabrics? If it's only on the bottom, how did you attach the fabric on top? Love the pattern on that one!

Do you have the Linacoustic behind both the top and bottom fabrics? If it's only on the bottom, how did you attach the fabric on top? Love the pattern on that one! Thanks, I searched for months for the right fabric and I really like the one that I finally found... dark with a rich, subtle, low-contrast, non-floral pattern. But I haven't been able to get a good picture of it... that room soaks up the light and doesn't look right with flash.
The short answer is "yes, I put Linacoustic on the top and bottom and I'd do it again".
Click "My HT Contruction Thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?postid=5402311#post5402311)" in my signature for more details, specifically (here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5543894&&#post5543894)) and (here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5612119&&#post5612119)). And pictures of installing the Linacoustic and fabric (here (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5485108&&#post5485108)).
Tip: For DIY, it's much, much, much easier to make fabric look good than drywall. And I've always said that the $140 roll of Linacoustic is the best money I spent in my whole HT.
But instead of going further off topic, let's see some more Before & After...

I need to take some updated pictures... that still shows the old Marquee instead of my G90.
BuffBakerGA 01-13-06, 12:08 PM Dabreeze: The projector is a H77, the screen is a Behr ultra pure white (for now, still working on it) and the audio is a Yamaha RXV-2500 with Paradigms (Monitor 7 towers, CC350, ADP350, and mini-monitors for the presence speakers (pictured over the towers)...
Clarence: 5 coats of stain... Holy hell, and I thought 2 coats was bad. I now see that its not a faux finish. Thats great looking wall material. I like the integration of the material into the chairs.
Chinadog: It's actually a piece of bullnosed oak. If you go look in the stair tread and handrail section at home depot they have full pieces of oak that already bullnosed and have the notch cut out. You simply set it on your riser, glue it, and nail it til the glue dries. It really made the riser stick out and not look like a block of carpet. Getting the rows of dots to line up horizontally and vertically was the hard part. Thank god I didn't do the carpet :D The wood is not that red and neither are the walls...

Art: I bet you really had to dig for some unfinished basement pics since you've built 2 HT rooms since then. I still remember your crush velvet purple pit :D
Okay, how about a "before" and getting close :-) We're not done and the finished room was taken awhile back, but here's what we've got thus far. A work in progress, as they say. I could not do all I wanted as our builder (new home) wouldn't allow us to do any of our own work....
ManTown2 01-15-06, 04:46 PM What type of wood and stain did you use????? thats absolutely beautiful
BuffBakerGA 01-15-06, 10:14 PM What type of wood and stain did you use????? thats absolutely beautiful
I used 2 coats of Polyshades antique walnut in a satin finish with a light sanding in between coats. I tried about 20 different colors and applications before I settled on this. It really looks best on birch plywood and poplar. The sande plywood can come out spotty in sections but the oak around the riser and the embossed trimmed pieces came out better than I expected...

Jason Priestley 01-16-06, 12:09 AM Man:
I now have a new purpose to life after seeing the home theater set ups in here. To think that I thought I'd be happy with just getting a nice surround sound setup (maybe the new denon 2807 and aperion 5.1 speakers) and then upgrade my 32" sharp aquos to perhaps a panasonic 55inch plasma w/ 1080P (i think it comes out this year) and a nice salamander furniture setup. Man was I wrong. My fiance is gonna kill me when I show her these picks and just tell her that the $8000 that I'm gonna spend in the next year will just be to hold me over until I join the big boys on this board!!!
If you don't mind me asking, would anybody be willing to breakout the costs of the entire home theater? I'd be quite interested....of course I guess first i need to save for a house....
Clarence 01-16-06, 11:08 AM would anybody be willing to breakout the costs of the entire home theater? There are a wide variety of budgets and lots of good threads... search around. $20K-$30K seems to be a common budget. A lot depends on whether you do the labor.
I spent a bit less:
"DIY Build Cost Question - How much did you pay?" (link) (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=5581534&&#post5581534)
Jason Priestley 01-17-06, 12:43 AM I guess the one difference between y'all and myself is that you have found what appears to be your last home or at least the home you expect to spend the majority of your life in. I believe i'm a good 15 years away and a bunch of transition homes before I hit that point. Until then, I feel as though if I put that much money into a room I'd never want to move out.
I wonder if the amount invested in the room typically pulls in the same value or more when the house is sold????
For now I guess modular furniture, plasmas or lcd tvs, and small bookshelf surround sound speakers.
BuffBakerGA 01-17-06, 09:36 AM Actually, this is only my 2nd home at age 33. My house is only 5 years old and we bought it new so I looked at this as a investment. I finished a little over 1000 ft2 and in the process I added an extra bedroom, full bath, bar, and a home theater. I now have 6 bedrooms and 5 full baths which the appraisers will factor in. The bar and home theater rooms will also help increase the utility of my home or at least give my home a selling advantage over the other houses. You can pretty much guarantee that when you sell your home, if you stick a sign out front that says finished day light basement/bar/HT room, most people are going to want to stop in and take a peek and maybe say at the end of the day "What about that one with the HT room?" There are some really nicely done basements in my neighborhood but they go one way or another. Either they have nice bars and OK HT room, or they have nice HT room but OK bars. I went the way of the best of both worlds because homes have been reselling in the 5's lately.
You can save a lot of money by doing it yourself but I got a little lucky. I happen to be a stay home dad (I like to call it my first retirement from Merrill Lynch at the age of 29 :D) and found a guy that I could work with who had most of the right tools and answers so I didn't screw things up. For me, it just happen to be a right place, right time, right person kinda thing.
Anyone find some more before and after photos...
Jason Priestley 01-18-06, 12:55 AM Wurd up, Merrill Lynch in the house. Bonus was definitely good this year especially at 26 years old (total comp up 69% baby!!!). Still years away from retirement let alone a house. In the NYC area, a small cape cod is gonna cost me at least $450K!!! No room left for home theater....sigh.....
Orc Hunter 01-19-06, 11:41 PM Ladies and Gentlemen of this "Before/After" Thread who posted pics, I compliment you and salute all of you greatly on your efforts. I am in the last three or four weeks of finishing out my 1,400 square foot basement completely (which started on October 1, 2005) -- with a bar, pub area, powder room, DVD Display Area, Wine Cellar, and dedicated 10-seat 9.2-channel home theater w/ a 2.35:1 CIH screen -- so I certainly can appreciate all of your work. Congrats.
I would submit my WIP but I can never get my large digital shots to work on AVSforum. I think you are limited in file size and I can never get my shots down in size enough to post (I believe this is the case). If someone wants to clue me in on how to cut a 2 MB picture size down to post here I would love to hear from you.
Anyway, all your pictures look fantastic. Enjoy your creations!
chinadog 01-20-06, 12:53 AM Jeff,
Got to see your pics. Don't host on AVS, host on a free picture service like Fotki.com, ofoto.com, etc, then link to them.

Orc Hunter 01-20-06, 01:08 AM Bud,
Yep, that's what I think I'll do. Hopefully I'll have them posted shortly. The basement is actually going to be somewhat of a movie memorabilia museum-type of basement as well as functioning bar outside of the 31.5' (L) x 14'10" (W) x 8' (H) 10-seat dedicated theater. We really did a good job (we think) with a somewhat limited space (i.e. we really squeezed in a lot of stuff without making the basement feel too crowded).
To be a bit more descriptive, if you don't mind, my wife and I have three large replicas (1:1 scale Darth Vader, Boba Fett, and Han Solo in Carbonite, which will be placed in specific areas of the basement for best effect) as well as a bunch of smaller replicas (the Hellboy Samaritan, various lightsabers, The One Ring of Sauron -- which lights up on his severed finger from MR-- etc.) in addition to many signed movie posters (for example the three LOTR films signed by much of the cast and crew). Signage (Theater Marquee, Snack Bar Menu, and Poster Lightbox) was completed by Hollywood Marquees out of Ann Arbor, Michigan (www.hollywoodmarquees.com). They are a wonderful firm to work with and had some absolutely wonderful ideas for the signage throughout the basement which kept to our Sci-Fi/Fantasy theme. 8250theaterworks in the Denver, Colorado area (www.8250theaterworks.com) has handled the project from the start and the owner (Ken Davis) is a really great guy to work with as well as coming up with some killer ideas for our project. He is the man! BTW, our theater name is "The Rubicon Theater," and will have a black and dark purple color scheme to it.
If I do get the pics posted soon, it will be of the before/after pictures and unfortunately the finished product has yet to come to fruition. When it's all done it should look pretty cool. My wife and I have waited about 15 years for a dedicated theater so it is great that dream is finally coming to reality.
BuffBakerGA 01-20-06, 08:19 AM I gotta see that wine cellar. I've got a little nook under the stairs that I thought about converting... Any step by step photos?
Jeff
Big Worms 01-20-06, 11:13 AM Jeff when you are all done, you should have a meet. I would love to see you theater in person! ;)
Orc Hunter 01-20-06, 11:21 AM BuffBakerGA,
Actually, it is an empty "hole" at the moment as we just ordered the wine racks, wine cellar door, and the WineTemp cooling unit. They should all be installed in about 4 weeks time. The end bottle count for the cellar will be able to hold about 130 bottles as it had to be scaled back by about 50% to accomodate the DVD Display Room where Vader will eventually reside. I like to think of it as going to be a cellar of "quality" not "quantity." :) Whatever that means! :) It actually resembles a wine closet -- to be honest -- as it is only about 140 cubic feet...just enough for a small arch, shelf, and wine racks as you look into the cellar and to the sides will be racks where the labels will be showing (I think its called horizontal racking).
Nothing too fancy, but it should be fun nevertheless. :-)
But if you want a really good Wine Cellar tracking program, visit Cellar! at http://www.cellarwinesoftware.com/. It is a fantastic program.
Clarence 01-20-06, 10:22 PM I would submit my WIP but I can never get my large digital shots to work on AVSforum. I think you are limited in file size and I can never get my shots down in size enough to post (I believe this is the case). If someone wants to clue me in on how to cut a 2 MB picture size down to post here I would love to hear from you!I recommend the great freeware program from http://www.irfanview.com
Just select Image... Resize.
But if you don't want to install anything new, you can use the Microsoft Paint program (assuming you use Windows)...
Start... Programs... Accessories... Paint
Then open your original image:
File... Open...
Then reduce the image size:
Image... Stretch/Skew... enter a Horizontal and Vertical number of about 25%
(Let's assume you have a 3 megapixel or 4 megapixel camera which probably gives an original image of about 1500x2000... so if you want this to be 480x640, then you'd reduce to around 25%-30%)
http://img30.imageshack.us/img30/505/paintresize4za.gif
Then select the JPG file type:
File.. Save As.. *.JPG
Then upload your attachment to the forum.
Note that in order to see the attachment options, instead of Quick Reply, you'll need to click the "Post Reply" button at the bottom of the thread:
http://216.66.12.250/images/buttons-white/reply.gif
Even easier... upload your picture to http://imageshack.us, click the button that says "resize image to 480x640 for message boards", then post the link that they give you...

Dabreeze: The projector is a H77, the screen is a Behr ultra pure white (for now, still working on it) and the audio is a Yamaha RXV-2500 with Paradigms (Monitor 7 towers, CC350, ADP350, and mini-monitors for the presence speakers (pictured over the towers)...

Aren't stair treads only about 42" to 48" long?
Did you have to use at least 2 pieces on each side to complete it? And how did you hide the seams?
Thanks
BuffBakerGA 01-22-06, 10:32 PM The 2 different Home Depots that I go to (Cumming and Buford, GA) had bullnosed oak in 12' boards so I bought a 10' and a pair of 8' for the sides. Then we just mitered the corners at a 45* so the seams on in the corners.
You could very easily make your own piece by taking a 1"x 6" board and routing a bullnose pattern and then rip the rest of the material off with a couple of passes.

Orc Hunter 01-28-06, 05:07 PM Ok, if you want to see some before and during pics of "The Rubicon Theater" project, please go to http://jeffandmary.smugmug.com/. We are about three weeks away from project completion. Actually, the electrician and our HT designer/installer are in the basement as I type this working away on a Saturday. I hope you all enjoy and you like what you see so far.
Big Worms 01-29-06, 01:47 PM Thanks Jeff for getting the pictures up! It looks amazing! Can you answer a couple of questions for me?

2. Were the windows just covered up? Or were they completely removed?
I love the theme throughout your whole basement. And the replicas are just amazing! I hope you can keep the pictures coming becuase I would love to see the finished product.

1. After the FabriCraft on the walls were installed, the dimensions are 14'8" W x 7'10" H x 31'3" L.
2. They were completely removed.
I'm glad you liked the pics. I wish the ceiling was a little bit higher in the theater, but oh well, no worries. In regards to posting more pics I am going to, but since the project is about 2-3 weeks from completion, I have promised my wife (upon her request) that I would stop posting pics as she wants the "big reveal" at the end of the project.

Buff,
I went up to a molding place last week called Moldings Unlimited (www.mouldingsunlimited.com) to get stain grade crown, base, etc. They had "landing" material, so I picked up some while I was there. I bought yellow pine (my doors and stain grade material is yellow pine - a little soft, I know) and it was 1.17 a foot.

bpbkk123 02-06-06, 01:17 PM Hey BuffBaker,
Beautiful Theater. Noticed that you have your front speakers enclosed. I am wondering what you did to ensure you got the optimal sound from them?
I currently have a pair of Paradigm Monitor 7's enclosed and just upgraded to a pair of B&W 804's and from what I am hearing I should have these out from the wall 16" and 20" from the side wall to get the best sound.
Sound wise I understand why this is ideal, but I like things to look neat and tidy and prefer the way that you've set up your room.
What are your thoughts on having your speakers enclosed vs out in the room?
Thanks.
BuffBakerGA 02-08-06, 11:39 PM My paradigms are about a 12" off the wall... To be honest, I can't tell the difference between enclosed and open. The only con would be that I purchased the cherry finished speakers and now I have to hide them :D...

Great Job everyone, they all look awesome.
Buff, You're media room is incredible, I have a client that is looking to do something like that in their new house. Your is an inspiration to all those looking for a media/game/bar concept. Outstanding Work.
Quick question, what is PJ and screen gain?
BuffBakerGA 02-12-06, 10:14 AM I went with the H77 and just a plain painted wall of Ultra Pure White... During the Super Bowl, I told people what the screen was the they were floored. Common answer was "No way, that's just paint?" I'm still searching for the right paint formula and/or screen material. The UPW is decent with ambient light (overhead cans), especially with the dimmers. If I can a decent site to host my photos, I'll take some screen shots during the day with the cans at a quarter brightness (good entertaining light)...

Buff, great theater!! A quick question for you -- I am planning to build something similar to your bar/ledge behind your theater seats. I am curious what you did to support the bar and ensure it doesn't rock/tip when people are leaning on it? Is it freestanding or did you bolt it in somehow?
Thanks!!

Clarence 02-12-06, 07:47 PM just a plain painted wall of Ultra Pure White... During the Super Bowl, I told people what the screen was the they were floored. Common answer was "No way, that's just paint?"Yep... I used UPW in my last house. In this HT, I used Kilz2 primer when I drywalled with intentions of eventually buying a real screen once I got my projector ceiling-mounted and figured out exactly what the screen size was going to be.
Anyways, the Kilz2 is great, even better than the UPW... visitors are amazed when I walk up and bang on it. With my 2 sons and their friends, I don't have to worry about the damage that would inevitably happen if I had a $1000 screen.

Buff,
Congratulations on your effort in creating a truly beautiful HT/Bar room. I'm sure it must be very rewarding to sit and watch a movie after having spent a great deal of time and effort on the construction phase of the process.
Two quick questions for you. 1) I don't see where you incorporated your sub into the front of the theatre..is it somewhere else in the room? 2) Presence speakers, I've seen them referred too before but haven't actually heard anyone comment on whether or not they create a noticable difference to the soundstage?
Thanks
BuffBakerGA 02-13-06, 04:00 PM We tucked it under the side component rack (you can barely see it at the bottom). It worked out the sub and the components are all the same width.
I'm a bass freak and I've always had my sub up front so I was skeptical at first. Then I watched some of my favorite boom/crash/boom scenes and it rocked just the same. My bass tastes have changed at bit but I still like a good explosion once in a while.
As far as the presence speakers, they seem to support the center channel with dialogue and some effects. It seems to spread the dialogue out a little better but how much, I dunno... I let the YPAO system deal with it and left it at that.

Ken and I (Kthomson) made them out of 3/4" plywood. We measure the width of the room and found the center. Then, made the center box strong enough to support a 100lb, 27" flatscreen TV (I actually sat up there, it's not going anywhere :D). Then, we worked our way out from the center and went from there. Each opening is basically a plywood box, whether it's a single door or a double door, and then we screw it to the studs of the wall and nailed all the boxes together. I used poplar to cover up the plywood edges. If I ever find a good spot to host my pictures I'll post them, otherwise, email me and I send some over. Clarence 02-13-06, 08:49 PM Ah... so your bar is attached to the riser. Smart. My riser is already built and carpeted, so I won't be able to do that, but I can see how that would be rock solid... a 6' base instead of a 2' base.
HeyNow^ 02-14-06, 07:22 AM Buff,
I see that it appears you decided against the steps for the riser. The rough-in shows a step on both sides while the finished riser it appears the step is absent. Or is it an optical illusion and the step is actually there?
BuffBakerGA 02-14-06, 08:47 AM Bud, we made made the doors too. I responded to your blazing ridge post. I'll get some pictures soon.
Clarence: A 2' base would still be pretty good as long as you fired some nails into the concrete with a nail driver and maybe some screws into the riser. But then again, I dunno, your tazmanian devils might find a way to move it. :D "Off the top rope with a power bomb..."
Heynow: Yes, ended up dumping the idea for a step. After the 090 chairs were fitted, I decided that the stair wasn't needed. I thought about putting one on the outside but more people would trip over it than use it. Although, I do have power ran to the riser and could light it up but the only person that has trouble stepping up is my 1 year old. :D
Clarence 02-14-06, 07:08 PM Clarence: A 2' base would still be pretty good as long as you fired some nails into the concrete with a nail driver and maybe some screws into the riser. But then again, I dunno, your tazmanian devils might find a way to move it. :D "Off the top rope with a power bomb..."My inspector advised me that if the bar was nailed to the floor, then it would be considered a half-wall and would thus require electrical receptacles in accordance with code spacing .
So I carpeted underneath (which I planned on doing anyways in case I want to move my riser and bar forward or backwards a few feet, thus my bar will be "furniture", not permanent.
As long as it looks half as good as yours I'll be happy.

I love the black granite tiles. Exactly what I would love to do, vice having to buy so much in a minimum order. Lots of open space. I love it! You should be very proud.
Very nice, elegant job!
BuffBakerGA 02-27-06, 10:09 PM Has anyone ever got a quote for granite countertops?
HD wanted $65 a square foot compared to one 12x12 granite tile was $6.50... That means I could screw up the tile job up 9 times and still come out ahead. We found a tile place down in Atlanta that you could buy by the box (10 tiles) or per tile...
jerrodshook 02-27-06, 11:56 PM Yeah, but granite countertop is alot thicker and it comes in slabs, not 12x12 tiles. Still not worth the cost, but that's how it goes. My wife and I are putting granite in our kitchen right now and it ain't cheap!
BuffBakerGA 02-28-06, 09:27 AM Currently, we have corian in our kitchen. I would love to put granite in a kitchen because you use it everyday and it looks great. But for a basement that gets used maybe once a weekend, it just didn't make a sense to spend the extra money. The only thing I don't like about the tile is the gray grout lines. We used black sandless ground and it still looks gray. I've got to get some grout enhancer and maybe that will darken it up...
ManTown2 02-28-06, 08:32 PM Along the same lines of laying the tile. Did you lay the tile on the floor? I am thinking fo doing that myself as well? Is it easy??????

Go with the Granite squares. I bought a house about 6 years ago and installed $200 worth of the 12x12 tiles for my counter top in the kitchen. This is what i did:
1) 3/4" plywood screwed down to top of cabinets.
2) apply thin layer of grout
3) lay down tiles and get them a quarter of an inch apart
4) apply thin line of Silicon caulk in the quarter inch gap.
5) press together and hold
6) continue to next tile
Some of the silicone will squeeze out of the gap when you push the tile togther. Thats ok just come back a day later with a razor blade to clean it up very easily.
Looks great and was a major selling point when we sold the house.
HeyNow^ 03-01-06, 09:36 AM Do you mean you put down a layer of ADHESIVE not grout? So what I'm hearing you say is that you did not use any grout between the joints? It's just silicone squeezed out? How much of a gap between tiles did you end up with? Was it clear silicone? This is very interesting. I don't want any gap at all if I can get away with it. Any failures?
BuffBakerGA 03-01-06, 10:35 AM Along the same lines of laying the tile. Did you lay the tile on the floor? I am thinking fo doing that myself as well? Is it easy??????
Yes, my tile buddy got me started with a layout and I finished it up. I didn't do any difficult patterns or angles because the room was 15ft wide and it just made sense to go straight across with 15 tiles... Nice, easy, and symmetrical.
For the back splash and/or vertical surfaces, we use an adhesive mastic which is very thick and somewhat more difficult to work with than plaster. I thought the tiles would fall of the wall but in fact it was difficult to pull them up if I needed to reset one or two. For the most part, plaster is used for horizontal surfaces like floors and countertops and the mastic is used on the vertical surfaces like showers and backsplashes. Sanded grout was used to fill in the joints on the floors with quarter inch joints or larger. But, on the granite, we used a non-sanded black grout to fill the joints because the joints were only 1/16 of an inch and it's pretty tolerant to spills and water. Silicone was used the corners where the tile met the wood...
Hope this helps.
72ScoutNGa 03-01-06, 10:45 AM I put down a thin layer of grout onto the plywood. I used black silicone in a caulk gun. The gap is probably 1/8 of an inch after your done but with the black silicone it looks much more seemless. I will see if i can get some pictures and post them for you. No after six years (we just moved last week) they still looked as good as the day i put 'em down.
HeyNow^ 03-01-06, 10:48 AM Grout under the tiles. Interesting. Where did you get your tiles?
72ScoutNGa 03-01-06, 10:54 AM A place here in Chattanooga Tn called 'Souteastern Salvage". $4.99/sq ft and now they sell it for 6.49/sq ft. Who knew granite tile appreciated!

Great Idea! Just a few questions as I have never dealt with granite before.
1. Are the granite tiles just as easy to cut as ceramic tiles? Do you just use an electric tile cutter?
2. Do they make surround pieces for around the sink or do you have to use a drop-in sink that sets on the granite? My sink is currently recessed with ceramic tile around and I like the recessed look.
3. Does the black silicon Caulk you used harden, or does it keep it's elasticity?
4. Is the Caulk easily cleaned?
Sorry for all the questions, but I would love to do my kithen counters in Granite, and this seems like a great way to do it and save lots of $$.
kmfdm515 03-04-06, 10:29 AM If you're looking for granite, try the yellow pages instead of Home Depot. I got my kitchen coutertops for $38/sqft installed. Still not cheap, but almost half of what HD charges.
For the basement bar, I will definitly do granite or marble tiles.
Try to find a place that sells remnants. We did that in the bathrooms when we had our house built. They sold it for around $20 a foot .Cutting hole for under mount sink($100) and edging was extra. Alot cheaper than the $60 + a foot for the kitchen.
John
We used Atlanta In-Town Granite after calling several references of theirs. We we happy with everything and refered them to a friend who was also very happy. $39 sq/ft. I live in Buford, GA...just down the road from buffbakerga....although we have never met.
You can google their name for their site.
I am new to posting...please be kind.
The front row is 14 feet from the screen, and the back row is 18 or so feet from the screen.
The chairs came from a place here in Mass called Jordan's Furniture. They are from a company called Klaussner.
http://www.klaussner.com/products/s...hp?cid=1&scid=5
and then pick "Sect.-Hollywood" to see them.
The chairs are somewhere around $400/ea, and the chaise is the same price.
The arms are much less, somewhere around $100/ea
The stuff is totally modular so you can put arms between chairs, or no arms like I have.

BuffBakerGA 03-06-06, 05:42 PM Hello my fellow Buforidian. This spring I may have a local meet-n-greet so stay tuned...
Come on, somebody throw up some pictures... Show us what you got so far. I haven't worked on my basement since the Super Bowl so I need a little motivation. :D
djearl81 03-07-06, 02:05 AM Holy crap you guys (and gals?) are good! I've got a theatre in my home, but I won't be there long enough to do the major overhaul. I'm already saving money to finish the basement in my next place.
All the theatres look amazing. The Bridge is very creative. Lots of ideas to think about...gotta love it when creative people share ideas.
Has anyone tackled a fiber optic ceiling? If so...I'd love to see some before and after pictures.
StewartFan20 03-07-06, 02:42 PM I'm also up here in Buford. Just moved to GA about a year ago. In the process of finishing my basement and, of course, putting in my long-awaited theater. I started in October and I'm in the middle of mudding and taping my drywall. Mudding and taping seems like an eternal process. I'm hoping by the first part of April, I'll be able to start painting and putting up the molding.
Posting pictures of my theater in this thead probably wouldn't be appropriate since I'm still a long ways from the "After". Right now somewhere in the middle between "before" and "after".

Orc Hunter 03-10-06, 09:43 PM Hey everyone, I have just finished updating my pics for my "Rubicon Theater" project. I'm almost at the end of the project with just a couple more things to have done. It's really taken shape over the last week or so and I hope you enjoy the pics. I will post more as they become available as the project wraps up here pretty soon.
Please visit http://jeffandmary.smugmug.com to see what all of this looks like. Thanks. :)
BuffBakerGA 03-11-06, 08:40 AM Hey Jeff (Orc Hunter),
Now that's a labor of love...
Wow, what a very nice and comfortable looking basement. I love the poster insets. I bet a lot of planning went into your basement layout and design. It's very well decorated. It looks fantastic... Congratulations.
Big Worms 03-11-06, 10:35 AM Wow Jeff! It turned out amazing! Just simply amazing! Congrats.
greighn 03-11-06, 08:36 PM Awesome theater! I love the recessed poster displays and the doors of Durin. How did you do the black light effect on the doors?
I'm also a big LOTR fan and your theater is a fitting tribute to the films.
Great job!
-Gary.
Orc Hunter 03-14-06, 01:11 PM Hey Jeff (Orc Hunter),
Now that's a labor of love...
Wow, what a very nice and comfortable looking basement. I love the poster insets. I bet a lot of planning went into your basement layout and design. It's very well decorated. It looks fantastic... Congratulations.
Thanks for the kind words Jeff (BuffBakerGA). We've been collecting movie memorabilia, replicas, screen used memorabilia, and signed movie posters for almost 10 years so it was nice to be able to display a majority of the collection throughout the project. Of course, we are always going to add more collectables, replicas and signed memorabilia to our ever-growing collection, so the stuff hanging on the walls will be rotated over time and swaped out -- especially on the walls in the pub area.
Construction on the project has taken over 5 months so we've tweaked it more than a couple of times. :) The project started out as a traditiional concession stand and a game room where the DVDs were being displayed, but as we started to acquire the life size Vader, Han Solo, and Boba Fett, things changed to more of a sophisticated design. That's when the bar, plasma, pub area among other aspects were decided upon and implemented in the overall design.
We actually had a super-sweet LOTR pinball machine by Stern all ready to go for the original game room design, but when we changed things up to a more sophisticated design -- especially after acquiring a life size Darth Vader -- we unfortunately had to return it as we now had no room to place it. That was a bummer but we think it turned out for the best (I really will miss not having the pinball machine down in the basement, but that's how it goes sometimes I suppose).
Orc Hunter 03-14-06, 01:17 PM Wow Jeff! It turned out amazing! Just simply amazing! Congrats.
Thanks Big Worms, I've always wanted a seriously dedicated theater for close to 15 years so it is nice to finally see that long-term goal finally come to fruition after all these years. This is the first house my wife and I have owned with a basement so I really wanted to take advantage of that aspect. The scale of the basement project was actually pretty much an afterthought -- to be honest -- but as we started to plan it out and design it, the project really started to take shape especially with all of our collectables thrown into the mix. It was a sensational bonus to say the least in the way it turned out.
I'm glad you like the project.
Orc Hunter 03-14-06, 01:48 PM Awesome theater! I love the recessed poster displays and the doors of Durin. How did you do the black light effect on the doors?

-Gary.
I am also a huge LOTR fan as well, especially after reading Tolkien's three book masterpiece. It was truly amazing how Peter Jackson and company were able to take Tolkien's work and faithfully reproduce it for the big screen. I also wanted to make a fitting tribute to the LOTR films and books and to sort of immerse guests in a bit of Middle-Earth as well in our basement, so I'm glad you thought of it that way! The signed LOTR posters were always the highlight of our signed movie poster collection. When we were collecting them years ago, we always wanted to display them in a very dramatic way. After talking with our HT designer/installer, Ken Davis at 8250theaterworks, we made that a reality as the basement design was worked out and implemented.
The "Doors of Durin/Walls of Moria" idea was originally going to be on the entryway into the DVD room. We were going to paint the design on the entry doors to the DVD room with walls all the way up to the ceiling and when you crossed a specific path (activated by a motion sensor) the doors were going to open up on hydraulics and the DVD room was going to have pillars like that in the underground world of Moria which the Dwarves of Middle Earth made. Then we got the life size Darth Vader and that design element changed completely to more of a "Darth Vader on the bridge of his Star Destroyer" concept. Also, that hydraulics idea was really way too out there -- and more specifically -- not in our budget (our eyes were definitely bigger than our pocketbook when I thought of that idea). :)
I still wanted to have the "Walls of Moria" idea somewhere in the basement and the only place left to implement it was in the entryway into the theater. It really turned out better this way as the "Speak Friend and Enter" design is a great way to physically enter into the actual theater thus replicating the movie idea much, much better. In the movie you say "Speak Friend and Enter" to get access to the caverns of Moria, and with this design set up you "Speak Friend and Enter" into 'the cavern' of the 14'10" (W) x 31'6" (L) x 8-9' (H) dedicated theater. I hope that makes sense!
Our painters textured the walls and doors in the theater entryway (which included the bathroom door to the right) to mimic the texture and design on the vast Walls of Moria. The glow-in-the-dark paint is a basic glow-in-the-dark paint which is nicely lit up when the black lights turn on. To get the design on the wall, she traced the "Doors of Durin/Walls of Moria" arch-like design from Tolkien's novel LOTR: FOTR directly from the page in the book. I photocopied the page, and our painters used a "Tracer" device, sort of like the old overhead projectors we used in school way back when (if you're 40 years old like me and remeber that sort of thing), to place the design perfectly centered on the wall. All she did was just trace the design in the glow-in-the dark paint.
Add a motion sensor to the black lights so when you turn the corner from down the hallway into the theater entryway area, the design "magically" lights up and the effect from the movie is pretty much recreated.
Great thread, fellas. Tons of good ideas in here. These theaters are inspiring.

wow, that's a nice piece of design work.
Orc Hunter 03-18-06, 02:01 PM Thanks! I wish I could say it was all me, but Ken (Ken Davis of 8250theaterworks) took our original concepts and made them a reality.
We originally were going to go with "your average basement company" to do the project, and although they are great at what they do and would have done a very good job, they didn't have the "home theater enthusiast" mindset -- just the mindset that this was going to basically be another basement project with some minor additions of what the customer wanted. What I mean by that is they do basements and media rooms, but don't really go 'off the page' to take the time to try something very much different.
By comparison, Ken approached the project like someone who loves movies and HT, and it shows in the end result. The basics of the basement weren't going to change (i.e. the theater, signage, a bar, places for our posters and memorabilia to hang on the walls, a wine cellar, a DVD display room, and some extra seating for guests). What Ken did was to take these facts and design something a HT enthusiast would enjoy throught the design and installation process. My wife and I came up with some great ideas but Ken molded those ideas into something more substantial.
Secondly, the project really also shines because of the painters. Ken and Virgina Hickey of Hickey Painting (a husband and wife painting team here in the Denver, Colorado area) came up with some marvelous color schemes to highlight the different areas of the basement perfectly (especially the DVD Library/Darth Vader display room, the LOTR color-themed hallway leading into the theater, the red and black colors throughout the main basement area, and of course the "Doors of Durin" entrance into the theater). I had the idea and concept for the LOTR theater entrance, but they made it very cool (and may I say very close to what you see on screen in LOTR: FOTR, without having to hire someone from the movie do the paint job).
The project has taken longer than I hoped it would, but it is worth it in the end.
BuffBakerGA 03-27-06, 03:28 PM Here's another before and after basement...
http://www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-sanyo-plv-z2-te.htm
I tried about 20 different colors and applications before I settled on this. It really looks best on birch plywood and poplar. The sande plywood can come out spotty in sections but the oak around the riser and the embossed trimmed pieces came out better than I expected...
I laughed when I read this because I think I've tried out every shade of stain there is. I even mixed colors like my parents do for their woodworking and achieved some really cool shades but we're not going to use any of them! Instead, we've gotten so many compliments on the look of the natural wood for the doors and soffit area that we're going to just polyurethane them. All that work & debating to just go with a natural color....

New2ItAll 05-01-06, 11:03 PM BuffBakerGA, what a beautiful theater room/family room. I am truly jealous. Quick few questions to clarify things on your wood and stain. You mentioned you used "birch plywood and poplar". So basically you framed up the colums, theater bar and bar with 2x4s then encased everything with the plywood and poplar or oak trim? Or, did you use the birch plywood for the bar areas and use vaneer 1/4 inch birch for the columns? Did you pre-frame and encase the columns with regular plywood first then attach the vaneer to it? Which areas did you use poplar and which areas did you use the birch plywood and oak if you don't mind me asking? I know I have a lot of questions but my wife "ok'd" the wood and stain for me based on your design. (Thank you) Your input would be much appreciated. Thank you, Pat

Hey Pat... Sorry, the Wife and I just got back from Cancun last night. Lots o' fun :D
Yes, everything (columns, bar, proscenium) was framed up first and then covered with Birch plywood (or whatever you like) and the trimmed out with various combinations of poplar, pine, and embossed pine. The media room columns and part of the proscenium where covered in 1/4" but the bar and HT hightop were covered with 3/4" plywood. I love the birch with all of the color variations and knots but it was hard to find the 1/4" and 1/2" birch that I liked so I used some sandeply. Looking back, and it probably would have been an overkill, but I would have liked to upgraded the 1/4" to 1/2" and bump up the bar tops to 1" instead of 3/4" but the quarter inch is cheaper so no big deal. I'll send you a pm on a step by step from framing all the way to staining a trimming.
The only construction difference with stain vs paint is that you can cover up more errors with paint by caulking and then repaint. Staining is a lot more tedious and time consuming but it look great when your done...

New2ItAll 05-07-06, 11:58 PM Buff, thanks again for the reply. I hope you guys had fun in Mexico. My wife, 3 year old daughter and I got back from Paurto Vallarta in February. Great time there. I have also been to Cancun, Mazatlan and Playa. All great places but surprisingly enough, Paurto Vallarta has been our favorite. We actually stayed just north of there in Nuevo Vallarta. We stayed at a place called Villa del Palmar Flamingos. Check it out if you are thinking about going back to Mexico. Roughly $150 a night then but well worth it. Not busy at all, very very safe . Everyone was friendly and hard working. I was worried about bringing my 3 year old with and all but not a worry once we got there. The place had an absolutely stunning pool area and view.
Anyway. Very very much appreciated on your reply. I want to thank you for sharing all of your pictures. My wife can now "see" my vision, or at least, part of my vision for our downstairs. My basement is framed up now and plummed. I just needed to see what others have done and well, look no further, I found what I want. Thank you again and I will look at my PM.

Captain: I love the stained trim work and colors. And that is a great transformation considering you had a concrete vault to work with and turned into a nice HT. Did you treat the entire room?
New2ItAll: Glad I could support your cause :D... All of us go through the same battle with our wives. They always want to see it first...
Jandawil: You can finish my garage anytime. I see you have a little jam session there in the corner. Do you ever pop in a live concert and play along?

Yes, the theater is built on a Dennis Erskine design - full room-in-a-room construction and treatment.

kwildman 05-12-06, 12:46 PM I am still in progress on mine. Need to purchase HT seating unit and finish wiring the 1/2 of the basement not used for HT. Also need to get a couple of area rugs to dampen the floor because I needed to go w/ porcelain tile. Surprisingly, the tile floors do not sound too bad when I got the furniture and other stuff in there. I had to back off the subwoofer a bit though. The walls are 1/2 cedar barn siding and 1/2 drywall. Acoustically, this works pretty good as the walls are different materials and only joined at the trim.
Still need to build shelves for the front speakers and center channel and run the front wires behind the wall. Getting fairly close. Will be ordering new seating units soon.

BuffBakerGA 05-12-06, 04:08 PM If there's one thing that I've learned from this forum... Your never really finished. There's always something to stain, paint, hang, buy, upgrade, decorated, collect, and replace... :D
oh my god...I'm in complete awe at your HT's!!! My house hasn't even broken ground yet and I thought I would be doing good to just have a projector...after seeing everything posted here I'm wanting to win the lottery just so I could build something worthy of the HT's here! I guess I'll get the basics in, and then work on the aesthetics later...
My HT will be 20x14 with a 10ft ceiling with one entrance to the stairs. I'm thinking about doing the curtain thing for the entrance, but never imagined the possibilities of what "could" be done. I'm so glad I found this thread for some reference. I'm open to any ideas/suggestions you guys could throw at me. I close on my house in Sept/Oct of this year but during the build process I'd like to get it wired up accordingly. So with a 5-7k budget (I can get everything for a house at COST) what would you suggest? I've already got a nice receiver (H/K 635) on the way I picked up for $450.
I wanted to use the paint idea for a "screen" but I have 3 windows where the screen's going to go...unless I decide to use the wall right by the entrance...is the paint a much better solution than a screen? I'm sure it's cheaper...
There are just so many options and I've never done this before...
damn good job guys!

I wouldn't say it's better, but I think it's every bit as good and much cheaper. My cost for the Goo screen was under $250 for a 117" screen after all materials were added up. I just framed over my one window and the screen wall is in front of it.
jasonblair 05-17-06, 02:20 PM Question... for all of you guys with these crazy HT setups, do you ever go sit in there, lower the lights, raise the curtain, and watch the CBS Evening News or Seinfeld reruns?
Belcherwm 05-17-06, 02:57 PM Question... for all of you guys with these crazy HT setups, do you ever go sit in there, lower the lights, raise the curtain, and watch the CBS Evening News or Seinfeld reruns?
Not unless it's in HD! :D
BuffBakerGA 05-22-06, 08:54 AM In the HT room, I only watch DVD movies and OTA HD stuff... For TV shows, sitcoms, and the news, I prefer to watch on the 36" upstairs. Although, it could be that we rarely watch live TV and our dual tuner tivo is in the family room. The projector settings are geared toward movies and I don't like to add the extra hours on the bulb if I don't have to.
Also, have you ever seen SDTV on a 110" screen... :(

of the garage? I just have some construction pics of the garage. they had to put in a new beam and lower part of the garage (that became the pit area in the media room). I lost maybe 18" of head room at the front of the garage (still an 8' ceiling).
Here you can see where the ceiling has been lowered in the garage at the front and the new beams:

LOL that would a example of what my wiring DOES NOT look like. Very nice job. Clean room.
BuffBakerGA 05-27-06, 09:30 AM Very nice theaters, very clean...
It's cool to see a HT room from the bare bones to a finished product. Hopefully, this thread will help give other HT builders some ideas on how to use a certain spaces or help create a floorplan. I know I personally pondered back and forth about various layouts before I began. Coming up with a game plan and getting started is the hard part...
miltimj 05-28-06, 02:55 PM Indeed. I especially like Joe's design going width-wise. I haven't seen his yet, and is a unique and very functional design. It's likely that it's difficult acoustically (more compromises than most), but very functional and able to fit quite a few people in there. Nice for putting a game on and shooting pool, that's for sure.

you wouldn't happen to have a better pic, maybe a more straight on shot of the back. It looks like the angle may be a little tough to get.
ManTown2 05-29-06, 11:49 AM nice theater, dow did you lose the whole 3 car garage????? im still not seeing how you did it???? any way you can get a drawing up?
im thinking of doing the smae thing
miltimj 05-29-06, 12:10 PM He didn't lose the garage. The theater is above the garage.. he just lowered the front of the garage ceiling a couple feet.
joealtus 05-29-06, 09:59 PM Tim is exactly right. We tore out the garage ceiling, lowered part of it, and put in new beams and joists. Then the attic space above the garage was converted to the media room.
ss3964spd 05-31-06, 03:31 PM I'll toss mine in here as well.
Multi purpose room; theater (although the sound system is yet to come), office space, pool hall, and guest room (via Murphy bed in closet).
It's unfortunate that the photos don't show the colors well (or it's unfortunate that I'm not a good photographer!). The doors and trim are a nice bold, reddish brown color - which we tried very hard to match to the cabinets, walls slightly darker than pewter, ceiling is slightly lighter than pewter. Most hardware; wall plates (actual switches and recepticles are satin black for contrast), door and drawer pulls, railing brackets, door lock sets and hinges, ceiling fans, lighting over the pool table are finished in brushed steel. Black patterened carpet and the hallway from the steps to the room is done in a charcol colored tile - which also continues into the bathroom.
No fancy framing was used, but LOTS of insulation was. Additionally, all sheet metal ductwork was wrapped in sound deadener, and 5/8+GG+1/2 was used on the ceiling. Not a basic rectangle; a combination of 60*, 90*, and 120* angles were used. The built in wall unit - also at an angle, is fully wired; at least one recepticle at every shelf, CAT5e, phone, cable and antenna feeds, and wiring for 7.1. In the photo - because of the flash, you can make out a bit of the wiring but in use you really can't see any of it.
Biggest single "I wish I had done that" is the column behind the couch. Just couldn't afford to eliminate it.
It all really works well for our family.

BuffBakerGA 06-03-06, 08:03 PM It's unfortunate that the photos don't show the colors well (or it's unfortunate that I'm not a good photographer!).
It's hard to get the photo colors to match up to the real thing. I've tried with flash, without flash, all the light on at night, all the light on during the day, and editing... Each time my red walls change colors. :)
Nice basement, I like the columns but then again I'm partial to columns because I have them in my theater. :D
miltimj 06-04-06, 02:51 AM Biggest single "I wish I had done that" is the column behind the couch. Just couldn't afford to eliminate it.
I see how it would be difficult to eliminate it.. that's quite a span, and would be a ton of work to remove it (and expensive whether you DIY or not).
However, you could dress it up more. My favorite support column finish work was by someone who did it for Dan Hanson in his theater (http://members.shaw.ca/danhanson/Theater/HTFinish1.htm) (halfway down the page, and other views on following pages).
You could do something very similar when you have the time, and use veneer and stain to match your other doors & cabinetry.
Oh, and the rest of it looks great!
ss3964spd 06-05-06, 12:42 PM Indeed, difficult to remove. I was able to tweak the room design and hid one of the two columns in a wall but there was just no hiding that 2nd one. I did consider dressing it up but I really didn't want to draw anymore attention to it than it already gets.
Here are some "during" pics.

I am looking as something close to that but I was worried that the sub would rattle the doors and hinges on the cabinet?
Any thoughts.??
chinadog 06-20-06, 03:26 PM Kermie,
You can use the speaker grill guides (plastic, heavy duty ones or magnetic). I used the magentic one for my panels and they work great. No rattle at all. Go to Partsexpress.com and do a search on "grill guides".

I have had mine cranked up pretty loud and haven't heard anything. Currently mine are on hinges, and closed and held together via velcro. I plan on replacing the velcro with magnets soon.

miltimj 07-07-06, 03:30 PM Hit the Quote button for any of the posts that include images embedded in them (like the one immediately above yours). Look for the tags that are included and how they are formatted and emulate that. You'll need to upload the images first to some image site, like fotki.com as an example.

jandawil 07-07-06, 03:48 PM So i have to have it on a site before i can post it on avs???? Im terrible with computers so i apologize for my questions
AVS has to be able to access where the <IMG> tag points to so it needs to be a public site. If you upload your photos to fotki.com or I use photobucket.com, below the picture they will have the HTML <IMG> tag already typed out for you. All you have to do is copy (Ctrl C) and paste (Ctrl V) it into your thread. They look like this:
"<img src="http://216.66.12.XXX/images/misc/photoname.gif">" (without the quotes though)
We here will see the actual photo, not the HTML code. So as you are trying you would do something like:
He here is a photo of my kick a$$ theater:
"<img src="http://216.66.12.250/images/misc/round_left.gif">" (remember no quotes though)
Hope this helps.

BuffBakerGA 07-11-06, 04:08 PM Actually, the rear speakers are bipolar speakers so we just built the columns around the speakers. They used to be white at one time so I converted them to black and just slid them into place. Take a look...

I see, looks great. very professional. I take it that the "grill" for lack of a better term, just slides over the top and friction fits over the speaker?

That's from a couple years ago and it's still a work in progress. I plan to have it finished for a superbowl party, so I might have some before/after pics within the next month.
victor-eyd 12-13-06, 12:03 PM I assume your room is the bottom one below
XavierYZ 12-30-06, 02:48 PM I posted this in its own thread , but thought i would share my basement in this thread as well
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/before.jpg
the old owners thought they new what they were doing when they finished the basement but it was horrible, dark damn they basement was split down the middle 1 half being the rec room the other half the furnace room laundry room and rough in for bathroom
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P7270015.jpg
I ripped down the drop ceiling and the wall dividing the basement
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P7300033.jpg
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P7300035.jpg
having the ductwork and plumbing all exposed on the storage side of the basment I had to drop the ceiling below the ductwork , so I built drop peice that would allow me to maintain the most head room below the ductwork
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P7310001.jpg
I relocated the laundry room into the rough in for the bathroom, we already have 2 and don't see a point to have one in the basement
the corner where the sewage pipe and electrical was I built a small storage room to isolate that ugly corner of the basement
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P7300034.jpg
I also defined the room while also allowing me to hide some vents that could not be relocated, and I wanted to hide the bulk heads
this allowed me to put pot lights in as well for a nice touch
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P8020006.jpg
Well its time for drywall and lighting
the corner where the furnace was there was enough room behind the furnace to use as a component closet
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P8040002.jpg
Installed the Pot lights and primer on the walls
http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/P9020090.jpg
XavierYZ 12-30-06, 02:49 PM removed the carpet and added paint

laid the flooring and finishing touches

here is the audio rack behind closed doors, don't mind the messy wires

http://i49.photobucket.com/albums/f257/xavieryz/PC170157.jpg
I leave a window open in the room and being winter time allows to the room to remain cool for the equipment
Waiting for my HD6800 and 92 inch motorized screen
The bar/game room is 15x26 and the HT room is 15x24. For a 110" screen, the first row of Berks (088) viewing position is right at 12' and the second row of 090s is right at 18' or 19'...
Here's a pano that I finally got to line up correctly...

Anyone have some photos of before and after?
Wow!!! what a beautiful theater/bar. Extremely well done. Wish I had the room, talent and dough to do what you've done. I have some pics of my own but it's so crappy I'm ashamed to show now. LOL. Congrats.
nathan_h 01-16-07, 12:12 AM Woops! I better wait until I have the "after" pictures as well as the "before" pictures, before I post!
jerrodshook 01-19-07, 12:56 AM I guess it's close to the right time for me to finally post some of my pics. I finished my entire basement and the HT was just part of it. Here's the space where the HT is now......

Here's a shot from the bar/kitchen area.... The HT is at the end and the pool table/game area is in the middle.

Kevin12586 01-19-07, 09:08 AM Nice job jerrod
I'll post my before and after pictures this week... keep in mind I didn't gut the basement, just remodeled a completed room. I just got the pool table installed last week :D
gdodd12 02-13-07, 10:32 AM If there's one thing that I've learned from this forum... Your never really finished. There's always something to stain, paint, hang, buy, upgrade, decorated, collect, and replace... :D
If there is one thing I have learned from this forum, its that there are a lot of rich people on this forum.
scaesare 02-13-07, 11:15 AM If there is one thing I have learned from this forum, its that there are a lot of rich people on this forum.
Then there's the rest of us...
I am almost done with my setup. I know that this does not compare to some of the system I have seen on this page, but this was my first build and setup and I am hooked!
This was about all I can do to my house since I don't have a basement or a dedicated room.
Be nice with the comments.
Al
Belcherwm 02-13-07, 02:32 PM Al,
Nice built-in look! I need to do something like that in my family room.
miltimj 02-13-07, 02:43 PM Very nice, Al! Can you cover up the TV & components area? If you could, that's how I would have a family room as well.. (i.e. I agree w/Bill...)
jerrodshook 02-13-07, 08:30 PM Nice job jerrod
Thanks. I'm very happy with it.... just need to get those last couple things finished.
jerrodshook 02-13-07, 08:32 PM If there is one thing I have learned from this forum, its that there are a lot of rich people on this forum.
I'm not rich, but I'm not poor either. I did things myself to put more of the money towards making things nicer, instead of forking out thousands in labor. All that money saved = wood doors, better carpet, HT chairs, etc.... My projector, screen and anamorphic lens only cost me $2,750. A lot of people spend that or more on a much smaller TV.
Al,

Thank you for the compliment, it was also wife approved which real important since it was in the family room.

The two door below the tv are flipper doors and fold in if you want to see the components or leave them closed. I do not have a cover for the tv, it will be exposed like in the picture.
Al
jerrodshook -
That is an awesome setup, congratulations!
Al
Hats off to everyone who posted you before and after shots. Buff you got one killer setup, when can I come over? :) Mine is still a work in progress.

Now that's true AVS spirit - when faced with limited funds and not sure what to put in your pool room, the plasma TV obviously has to take priority over the pool table...
Great looking basement!
jerrodshook 02-16-07, 01:46 PM Looks great...might I ask what color paint that is? :D
Thanks! It's Sherwin Williams Mannered Gold on the walls and Blonde on the ceiling. They're both on the same color card... same family of colors. I like the way it turned out.

Yeah, actually it boiled down to us having a New Year's party and we (I) "had to" have a TV to watch the ball drop. I "couldn't" move a TV from elsewhere in the house so I found a "great deal" and bought the plasma. :D

Thanks, it really looks great..not too yellow. It that a wood trim you have on the bottom half of the wall?
David F 04-19-07, 03:22 PM Wow, some really great work here. All of you should be proud and I hope you're enjoying them as often as possible!
The before shots are when I thought I was going to have a dedicated room on the second floor in the back of my home. After construction was almost done I found out that I had to make the den a dual purpose room. The first shot is when the dem was first completed. I took down a closet and wall to combine 2 1st floor bedrooms to make a large den. The second shot is the same room after some sheetrock, spackle and a freshly mudded floor. Then after some tile, and some hardware you get the last shots.
Some additional shots showing the dire need I have for sound treatments.

How does your theater sound with the "open" wall on one side? Is the sound lop sided?
