Construction has started in our Home Theater Project. We are building a dedicated theater in an unfinished part of our basement. Half of the basement is already finished and will be converted into a toy room for the kids. Therefore, the stairs, bathroom, etc are already in place so construction will consist of building just the theater and bar/concession area. The unfinished part of the basement (37 X 13) currently opens into two additional rooms. The first room is 10X12 that sits under our sun room. This room will serve as the equipment room. The second room is 12X18 utility room and contains the furnace and hot water heater. This room will also serve as storage. We will be adding a new door into the utility room so it can be accessed without going through the theater.
We moved into this house in October of 2004, and I have reading the forum and planning this Home Theater since about then. Much thanks to all of the forum members who have posted and/or answered my questions on design, construction, etc. I hope to be able to do the same for other members as well from what I learn on this project.
The layout I designed for the theater can be seen below (minus the bar/concession area). The layout was basically dictated by the 3 foundation walls and the other finished part of the basement. This left a 37X13 space to work with. The entry into the theater will consist of a 8X12 bar/concession area that will open into the 29X13 Home Theater.
Additional Inspiriation for the theater layout and column design was taken from Francis Ford Coppola's home theater that can be seen pictured here:
http://www.stevecaseydesign.com/dlahd2ksys.pdf
This add was actually in an old Home Theater magazine that I cut out and saved.
Home Theater Specs: 29X13 Dedicated Front Projection Home Theater with finished dimensions of approx 28.5 X 12.5. Sound control will be addressed with RSIC clips for the side wall framing (DC04) and for the ceiling (DC01), double layer 5/8 drywall and green glue on walls and ceiling. The acoustical treatment will consist of the standard linacoustic/batting covered with GOM.

The biggest obstacle in the project was the HVAC ductwork (and returns) that ran through the basement. To tackle this, we had the ductwork re-routed and moved to the side wall. We will cover the trunk in a soffit, and build a matching one on the other side. There is also a support beam that runs across the room (towards the rear) We will build a soffit around this as well, and connect it to side soffits. Once the stage is completed, we will finish the soffits to a complete square and add a few recessed lights for the stage.
In the location that the HVAC trunk ran under the suport beam, we are going to build a small bookcase. I'm hoping that once the soffits and bookcase are completd, it will look like we designed the room that way, and you won't be able to tell we hid the HVAC trunk inside. Here are pics of the re-routed HVAC trunk and place where it goes under the support beam:

Matt Malone 01-11-06, 11:06 AM Good luck! I have ductwork to deal with in my basement too.
What part of Cincinnati are you in? I'm in the Milford area. Have you looked into the Lutron system for controlling the lighting?
barhoram 01-11-06, 12:29 PM Timon,
I'm in West Chester by 747 and Tylersville. I did look into the Lutron system, but I've been messing with X-10 for years now and have all of the switches I need already. I probably would have went that route as I do like the system, but saving the money allowed me to put $$ towards the sound isolation (green glue and RSIC clips). I've also got an Ocelot X-10 controller that I am going to use for automating both the lighting and all of the A/V equipment with my HTPC.
Have you found any local suppliers for accoustical treatment parts (ex, OC 703, or mineral wool, I think that's what it is called.)? I wanted to go the GG route, but the budget (approval committee) wouldn't go for it. I started construction on my room this weekend. I was able to get 2 walls up.
barhoram 01-12-06, 08:32 AM Timon,
Yes. Although I did end up spending quite a bit of time looking locally.
For Mineral Wool, go to M&M drywall. HD and Lowes had no idea what I was talking about.
For USG acoustic caulk, go to Nextgen Building Supply...they are right next to the Union Terminal.
For Linacoustic, go to Specialty Products & Insulation.
And, last but not least, for wire, connects, bass shakers, etc, go to Parts Express. They are in Springboro, and you can buy just about everything from the catalog from the showroom.
barhoram 01-12-06, 08:49 AM Here are a few more picutes of the unfinished area:
This will be the Home Theater room. You can see the future equipment room off to the left. Access will be through a 32" solid core poplar door with a threshold and weather stripping for sound isoloation.

The back wall does have a cutout for the fireplace above. Also, the Electrical Panel, Satellite Wiring, Security, and gas piping for the fireplace are all along the back wall. Therefore, the screen wall will be built out from the back allowing access behind it. A proscenium will cover the open space to the left and right of the screen wall as you can see on the plans above.

Good to see some Cinci people here. Good Luck on your construction Barhoram!!!
I live in Hebron-NKY now, but just finish signing a contract for building new house in West chester, its Dress house off of 747 (Smith Road, Village of providence - Subdivision).

jerrodshook 04-13-06, 12:59 AM Good luck on the build. There's more and more of us popping up around here.
Rayman2k2 04-13-06, 02:35 AM My uncle lives in Mason, right outside Cincy. I looove Cincinnati...it's > Columbus.
Nice build so far.../subscribed
I spent the first 19 years of my life in West Chester, Ohio. Still have friends there. Living outside of Indianapolis now. Had to get closer to home after living in Houston for 5 yrs. Ugh.
Would you mind posting a link to where you buy RSIC clips? I'd like to take a look at them out of curiosity. How much extra cost does it add to the room construction to use them?
Looks like a solid design so far.

Reaper,
bpape sells them and has the best price that I found. Dennis Erskine sells them too and the price is close. I used the DC04 clips in my room and took a number of pics of them. Check out this post in my HT thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=7295046&&#post7295046)
I haven't installed the regular RSIC clips. The L-Shaped ones are DC-04 clips and are used for walls, garage door openers, etc.
The manufacturer is PAC International (http://www.pac-intl.com/home.html)
Nice shots. Thanks for showing those to me. I probably won't get to build another theater for years but I am already thinking about it ;). It's a sickness, I know. Glad I am in good company though. Haha
aeromorris 04-13-06, 09:46 AM Good luck with the build barhoram. I just moved away from Cincinnati last spring. Technically we lived in Maineville, just behind Kings Island. GE was my first job out of college. Pretty good first job. Its just my luck that the Bengals become respectable the season that I leave.

barhoram 04-13-06, 01:49 PM Great to see some interest in my thread/theater build. Things have progressed a bit since my last update....new pics coming soon!
I will see If I can find a shot of one of the DC-01's used for the ceiling. You can see a shot of the DC-04's used to attach the framing to the foundation (see above). I think the total cost for all of the clips was about $800. I used approx 100 of the DC-04's to attach the framing to the foundation walls, to build the soffits, and to attach the sound-proof lighting boxes we built. Approx 100 of the DC-01's were used for the ceiling. The DC-04's are great beacuse the L-shape is very versatile.
Check back for an update with more pics soon!

I live just up 747 from you..near milikin..you are doing great work. I finished my "HT" a couple of monthes ago, but i was on a sever budget and basically just framed in a room in the basement, and stuck in a screen and PJ...now i am finishing up the rest of the basement with dreams of a pool table..but i am not sure one will fit. Great seeing your'se come along!!
Looks like you'll have a really nice space when you're done. I also think you'll like the equipment you've put together - though I've not heard the Fosgate piece personally.
Good luck and keep the pics coming.

Cleaning up the wiring runs into the equipment room. The metal quad outlet box is the dedicatd 20 amp for the equipment (minus the amps). The white outlet box on the right is the dedicated circuit(s) for the Sherbourn Amp. The white outlet box on the left is tied into the lighting circut, and will be used for the X-10 module needed for lighting control. The plug to the far left is hard wired to the outlet located at the projector and will be plugged into the surge protection with the rest of the equipment.

BritInVA 06-04-06, 09:43 PM I didn't think you could run standard appliance cord in conduit/inwall.
Looking good, you have got a nice size space for you HT
barhoram 06-05-06, 08:15 AM Oh..sorry..didn't mention this above. The cord itself doesn't run through the conduit. It is connected to standard gauge wire that was used for the rest of the outlets. The connection to the standard plug is made up in the metal box.
BritInVA 06-05-06, 10:28 AM Good solution - I'm thinking of using an inlet recepticle.
pkarakis 06-05-06, 11:02 AM Bathoram,
Everything looks great and is making me very impatient to start on mine this summer. Can I ask how much height the RISC clips and channel take off the ceiling? I have a 7'10" ceiling and with 2 layers of 5/8" drywall, I am not sure I will have enough headroom with a second row riser.
Pete
barhoram 06-05-06, 11:34 AM Pete,
Should cost you about 3 inches to do the same thing. 1 5/8" for the clips/channel + 5/8" + 5/8" for the drywall.
I had 7'9" of clearance from the floor to the joists before RSIC clips, channel and double drywall. The drywalling is pretty much finished up now, and I just went down and measured 7'6 inches..so that seemed pretty much on. You will probably be looking at 7'7". My 7'9 doesn't seem low at all, so I'm not too worried about the riser.
pkarakis 06-05-06, 04:59 PM That makes me feel better. I will be interested to see how it works out for you on the riser. Are you planning on putting the projector in the soffit or some kind of ceilingmount/hush box?
barhoram 06-05-06, 06:04 PM I installed a box for the projector between the joists, and (once covered) will be flush with the ceiling. It allows enough space for the projector outlet on one side and has the opening to the conduit to the equipment room on the other. I did this to allow enough space to access the conduit if we ever wanted to change any of the cables. A threaded metal pipe is secured on one side of the box and drops a few inches below the ceiling. The projector mount will screw into the thread on the pipe and secure the projector. The pipe will also allow for a clean run of the wires to the back of the projector. The only thing you should see on the ceiling is the projector, silver mount, and a few threads of the silver pipe
http://static.flickr.com/64/157306651_62d1ac6830_d.jpg
pkarakis 06-05-06, 10:20 PM Nice. I saw that picture, but I wasn't sure how you were hanging the projector. Your space is pretty close in size to mine, plus I am in Cinci regularly for business, so your build seems close to home. ;)

The framing for the bookcase to be built is complete. Also, the doors arrived and were installed (solid poplar with a threshold and weather stripping for sound proofing)
pkarakis 06-07-06, 01:33 PM Looking good! Did you get the Linacoustic locally or order it? How about the door? I saw in another thread where you can get some specialty lumber companies to cutom-make a door for you with the weather-stripping.
barhoram 06-07-06, 10:13 PM I called around and got the Linacoustic at Specialty Products & Insulation...picked it up at the will call counter. Since I wasn't the normal contractor type, they asked me if it was going into a Home Theater.
I got the doors (and the rest of the trim) at Cox Interiors.
http://www.coxinterior.com/
I specified solid doors pre-hung with threshold and weather stiripping. They came completely assembled, and just needed to be installed. They worked really, really well. Cox does great work. Definitely worth a few extra bucks than the box stores.
Pics of the stage coming later tonite.
barhoram 06-08-06, 03:37 PM Stage being Built:
8" stage with 1/2" double plywood, seperated by roofing felt. All sections of the stage are filled with sand. WOW. What a pain lugging 50+ bags of sand through a wet yard, down the 10 concrete steps through the back basement door. Completely bought Toys R Us out of sand. (Although you can't beat thier dry playground sand). Had to finish it off with a trip to Home Depot for a few more bags of thier construction sand.

BIGmouthinDC 06-08-06, 04:44 PM Just a heads up on the furring strips. Be sure to plan ahead on what size crown, chair, baseboard moulding that you will be using and that the furring strips provide a good backing for securing the moulding. I ended up putting two rows of furring at the each location to match the width of the molding and provide a nice wide and stable support. I went with a molding at the ceiling that mounts flat instead of the normal crown and the double wide (with a gap between) worked out great. Using the crown it will help to have the furring mounted low enough so that the bottom edge of the moulding rests on the furring.
Also can't tell if you've left some of the furring loose so that you can hide the staples in your inside corners. (or ceilings for moulding free design)
barhoram 06-08-06, 08:10 PM Good tips. Thanks. The furring strips on the bottom of walls and around the doors are about 4 inches wide, so I think I should be ok with the baseboard and door trim (which are the widest). The trim I chose for the top is fairly small, as I wanted the columns to be the focal point of the room once they are in and stained. The only crown that plan on having now will be around the tops of the columns to dress them up a bit...and I think should be ok there too.
Good catch on the loose furring strips. Actually, all of the corner strips and the two on the sides on the long walls are not screwed in. They are just tight enough of a fit that they stay on the wall now without screws.
BIGmouthinDC 06-08-06, 09:50 PM One other thing to check before you start hanging fabric. When I was working on my first wall with columns I discovered that putting up the furring strips next to an undressed column. made for a later impossible fit. My columns are wrapped in fabric and the wall fabric is fastened to the inside edge of the strips adjacent to the columns. Thats a total of 4 layers of fabric to fit in for each column
I found if I used a folded piece of fabric as a spacer I could judge how tight to fit the strips. Even with the fabric as a spacer I kept the fit on the loose side and the columns went in perfect.
BritInVA 06-08-06, 11:08 PM Looking good - see you decided not to cover whole screen wall with Linacoustic and went same height as walls (or was that the mistake).
barhoram 06-09-06, 07:56 AM I do plan on covering the entire screen wall with Linacoustic. We just put that section up quickly so we could get going on the stage. I've got to come back and finish the top part and the ceiling.

Where did you get your linacoutsic? I'm up in Columbus and not as far ahead in my HT room as you are, but I am at the point of trying to find it.
Mark
Mark Lem 06-14-06, 04:15 PM Never mind about your linacoustic source - read your thread again & found the answer.
Mark Lem 06-14-06, 04:23 PM OK, Sorry for these multiple posts!
Now I do have a legitimate question:
Went to Specialty products website to place an order, and I don't know how to specify the 1 inch linacoustic.
What exactly is the name of the material that I need to place an order?
What are most of you guys using for furring strips.
3/4 ' by 1.5' which is what is usually found. How are you working the 1" linacoustic into that, without it pushing the fabric out?
thanks for the help.
J-dubb16 06-14-06, 10:35 PM Mark Lem - Ask for 1" duct liner that comes on 4' x 100' rolls. If you want linacoustic, specify James Mansville (JM) or an equiv from Owens Corning would be Quiet R, type 200 or 300.
Most places basically know it as duct liner (that is it "real" use)
J-dubb16 06-14-06, 10:39 PM Kermie,
Most of us are ripping down 2x material, ie. I am going to rip 2x6s that are 8' and 10' long. 2x6s will rip to provide 5 -1" x 1.5" boards because they are 5.5 inches wide, the extra 1/2" is lost by the 1/8" removed from each of the 4 cuts. Any thing bigger is a 1/4" actual, ie. 2x8s, 10s and 12s are 7 1/4", 9 1/4" and 11 1/4" repectively, so there is not enough for the blade to eat up. 2x6s get you the most material for the money.
Kermie,
Unlike many of the people here I take 5/4 x 4 and rip in half for furring strips. One board gives approx 1 3/4" wide by 1" thick strips perfect for the 1" Linacoustic. I find the 5/4 is more stable once ripped than 2x4's. There are some that still warp so I only rip as needed. Only problem is finding good supply. The big oranges dont replenish as often as they need to and a lot of the stock is poor. So takes a bit to get enough.
Regards,
Doc
ScottJ0007 06-15-06, 12:38 AM Mark Lem - Ask for 1" duct liner that comes on 4' x 100' rolls. If you want linacoustic, specify James Mansville (JM) or an equiv from Owens Corning would be Quiet R, type 200 or 300.
Most places basically know it as duct liner (that is it "real" use)That would be "John", not "James". (Mixing up our Disciples are we? :D )
barhoram 06-15-06, 08:00 AM Correct. Just ask for the John Mansville 1" duct liner. Speciality Products had a couple of brands of liner so I made certain to specify the JM. My theater will be about 13X28 and the 100' roll was plenty. If it's not clear online, I would call. They pretty much knew what I wanted when I told them it was going to go on the walls of a home theater.
I did rip down the furring strips as well. Anything that I found pre cut was not a true 1", so this seemed like the best way to go.
J-dubb16 06-15-06, 12:17 PM Are you guys finding non pressure treated 5/4 boards somewhere. I would like to use them, but every place I have looked they are pressure treated.
I've been getting them from Big orange, Lowes & lumber yards.
Looking great !!!
Your are moving along in a nice Phase.

barhoram 08-02-06, 11:49 AM Additional Updates:
All of the Columns are built. We are now finishing the base boards and crown moulding and finishing the bookcase.
Right wall. 2 columns (will have sconces) and the Right Surround Speaker.
We prestained most of the wood. The pieces we cut, and one sheet still need to be stained so the colors all match.

foolsandkings 09-25-06, 03:43 PM Looks great.
I have both a similar layout and similar plans, including, unfortunately, an electrical service panel in a similar place (except that mine is on the side wall instead of the screen wall).
What are your plans to maintain access to the panel?
Thanks, and again, looks like a great job.

TAllen01 09-25-06, 05:31 PM Looks great. Can't believe I did not find this site sooner. I am just north of Cincinnati (Middletown) and planning my theater as I write. Had I found it, I would have saved a bunch of time looking for Linacoustic. Thanks for the great info and keep pics coming.
BucksWin 11-07-06, 01:37 PM Looks wonderful. Quick question: why didn't you put rigid insulation on your basement walls? I was under the impression that it was necessary/important to do so. I'm in Cincinnati also, and will be starting construction soon.
barhoram 11-07-06, 09:08 PM For insulation we used Roxul Safe & Sound (mineral wool). I chose that over the standard pink stuff because it won't mold if water were ever to get in.
Finally go the sconsces Purchaced and Installed. Found these Kitchler lights while travelling on Business at the Great Indoors. These were exactly the style I had been looking for.

They give off a soft orange (sunburst) glow when dimmed. Perfect.
SVonhof 11-08-06, 09:10 AM I really need to update the thread with progress pictures as the rier is built and almost all is done except for the carptet.
I second that notion!
COACH2369 11-08-06, 09:48 AM Glad to see someone in Cincinnati! I'm on the west side, Covedale to be exact. :)
I just stumbled upon this thread for the first time this morning..
I am a fellow westsider myself. Born and raised in Delhi and now I live in Bridgetown.
COACH2369 11-08-06, 09:57 AM Your room is looking great! Are you considering going with a different projector? I recently got a Panasonic AE900 and I am REALLY happy with the performance I get with it.
If you need a demo, feel free to PM me and we can set something up. When it comes time for a popcorn machine, let me know because I work for Gold Medal and we are right down the road from you..
Blindamood 11-08-06, 02:39 PM I just stumbled across this one yesterday, too. Apparently, you're right around the corner from me. I live in Beckett Ridge (West Chester).
Can't wait to see the final product!
barhoram 11-16-06, 12:36 PM Thanks for the feedback guys.
I will try and update with pictures tonight. Just got the HD-DVD add on for the XBOX 360, and have been busy with that. Picture is outstanding. This will be the stop-gap until the 2nd gen units are out and cost is down a bit. I do plan on upgrading the projector (probably the weak link now). I've got my eye on a Pearl....but haven't pulled the trigger yet. Changed the PreAmp from the Fosgate to an Anthem D1. What a great unit. Can't wait for the upgrade to the D2....
Coach: I do have a Gold Medal popper (Antique Deluxe 60). I'm in bad need of a cart for it, as it is just too big for the bar. Any insight into a good / reasonably price cart for that unit?
Since my last update we've completed:
Fabric (GOM): finished!
Trim (poplar) and doors: stained and up!
Bookcase: finished and stained!
Riser (14" w/ step): built and insulated!
chairs (Berkline 90's): set up and functional!
bass shakers: (installed in Berkline's): front row installed and functional
theater automation: functional. complete control with wall keypads, laptop or pda!
HTPC: (running Media Center w/ My Movies Plugin, HDTV) built, stable!
lighting (x-10): switches & keypads installed, control via automation pc
Stage: removable panels built, fabric installed, in place with magnets.
Lobby: Painted. Bar/ candy counter installed. Popcorn popper (need a cart).
The room is functional and we are using it even though there are a bunch of things that still need taken care of. The punch-list as of now (mostly budget related):
Carpet for the theater, riser and stage.
Tile for the lobby area.
Door knobs for all 3 doors. Any recommendations on good ones?
Trim for 4" recessed lights. Can I use trim other than Halo in my Halo boxes?
Bass Shakers for riser (2nd row of seats). Need to attach them to riser
Black GOM for behind stage
Enclose lighting panel (needs soundproof door).
Rack for equipment (currently in entertainment center)
Rattle in SUB: still trying to figure out the rattle coming from my Velodyne DD15
Projector upgrade: Pearl ???
other misc. never ending stuff :)

forgueam 12-05-06, 09:29 AM I'll go ahead and raise my hand as another fellow West Chester resident. I live in the Glenn Moor Farms subdivision off of Hamilton-Mason road.
I have a question for you:
Very early in your project, you mentioned that you had to reroute some HVAC ductwork. Did you do this yourself, or did you have a professional do it?
If you had a professional do it, who did you use and what was the approximate cost?
I love your work, great job!!
Aaron
ericnkatrina 12-05-06, 07:24 PM Great job!! Can't wait to see it 100%
barhoram 12-05-06, 07:40 PM Forgueam,
Greetings. Indeed you are close. I know exactly where Glenn Moor Farms is at. Just down Hamilton Mason from us in Providence Manor.
I did hire someone to re-route the HVAC ductwork. He's a one man crew and does odd HVAC jobs. I probably wouldn't recommend him as he works mostly on his own schedule, but was very inexpensive. It worked out fine for us, because we had a few months for him to get all of the ductwork moved before we started framing. He moved one main trunk line about 3 feet to the right, re-routed the dryer and hot water heater vents to the other side of the house, and replaced 3 sections of round metal ductwork with the flexible stuff. I think the total for all of his work and materials were right around $1,000.
I'm glad I didn't do it myself, as I don't think it would have come out nearly as nice. Also, I was nervous that whatever work I would have done would have been covered up shortly by a soffit and insulation with no chance of fixing any things I might have missed.
Check below for some additional construction pics.
barhoram 12-05-06, 07:58 PM Here is the start of the bookcase. We built a solid square from finish grad poplar and attached it to the framing that we earlier built. We then cut the front raduis, etc and drilled the hold for the shelves. Keep in mind the above the arc is the ductwork that we concealed in the soffit as it bends around and I beam.

Greetings from Springfield.
Tboy
AudioBob 02-20-07, 08:59 PM Excellent Job. Are you an Elder Grad??? I figured that you may be because of "The Pit" name of your HT.
barhoram 02-21-07, 08:22 AM LOL. Nope...not an Elder grad...but I do know of the Pit. The theater got that name from my wife who refered to it that way after a month's worth of evenings and weekends spent down there. "Are you going to spend another night down there working in that Pit ?" :)
I'll post a few updated pics shortly. We have just been basically working on some punch list items over the past months. I've been spedning time tweaking the control system and installed a touchscreen in the lobby/bar. The last big ticket item is carpet for the theater/stage/riser, and tile for the lobby. Currently those are 2nd in line behind saving the last $$ for a new van (wow those Honda Odyssey's are expensive!!)
The most recent updates have been moving the bar out of storage into the lobby area:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/180/389377618_9fba031134_b_d.jpg
Installing the doorknob/lock with fingerprint recognition on the door that enters into the lobby/bar. Note this was an existing door that led into what was the unfinished part of the basement before we built the theater. The rest of the house is finished in the golden honey color stain. The lobby/bar/theater are obviously finished in a differnt stain.

And EQing the Velodyne Sub:

This week / weekend I'm going to try and touchup a drywall seam in the lobby/bar as well as finialize the trim selection for the 4" Halo recessed lights.
hotchip 02-24-07, 01:23 AM This all looks great. I like the automation system you have on the touch panel, makes everything simple doesn't it!? Looking forwards to seeing finished product pics. Keep up the good work. Very Impressive.
AngelaC 03-04-07, 03:05 AM I like the fingerprint locks. This adds to the "cool" factor of your theater.
SVonhof 03-04-07, 06:15 PM I like the fingerprint locks. This adds to the "cool" factor of your theater.
Just don't let kids, neighbors, friends watch the episode of Mythbusters where they shoot those things down really easilly...
barhoram 03-05-07, 01:33 PM Thanks for the replies. The fingerprint lock is more for just keeping the kids in their play area, and out of the lobby (where the candy is!) than for secuirty. It is nice, because it automatically locks after five seconds, so we really can't forget to lock it. We found it to be a much better solution for us than to have to rely on a key when we wanted to get in, or to mess with more childproof door handles. The upstairs is filled with those already ;).
Currently waiting on the trim(s) for the 4" Halo recessed lights to arrive. Ordered a few different styles online to figure out what we like best for the stage, above the seats, and the bar area. Will post some more pics when they arrive.
Finally starting on the flooring. Haven't decided on a carpet pattern for the theater...but did decide on a tile design for the lobby:
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3347/3619191355_600663e143_b_d.jpg
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3353/3619192687_d9a1679631_b_d.jpg
As usual, the acutal tiles look quite a bit darker (almost black) than in the photo with the flash. Both the small and large black granite decorative tiles cut into the corners have sparklies that light up and really stand out.
Also starting to construct the bar in the back of the theater. I't will sit flush against the back of the riser, but will not be anchored. This will allow it to be pushed out of the way if we ever need to get something large through the theater door. We will also be able to lift it out of the way to carpet completely under it. You can also see the outlets in the riser for the chair reclines and speaker terminals for the chair butt-kickers.

dhendriksen 07-07-07, 07:25 PM Man - this looks really neat. We just sold our house and moved into a new one we had built, and do not have a theater yet. This is getting me excited to start construction on mine. Do you have any updated pics/progress?
Dan Hitchman 08-12-07, 10:35 PM Beautiful, classy theater!
It's VERY similar to an idea I've been mulling over for a friend's ~24x16x9 rough space in a basement. It too will use Paradigm speakers-- the cherry veneer Signature line, but the fronts won't be hidden.
Not sure yet if I should go with two sets of side surrounds, one for each row, or not.
Going to have similar hurdles with HVAC. Yuck. What depth did you make your stage? Did your 8" stage height work out well with your 14" high riser? I'm thinking of speaker placement.
Any pictures of your equipment room? How big a room did you go with? There's a storage/furnace room on the left hand side of where the theater is going, and the door would be placed almost exactly where you placed yours. I was thinking of hanging acoustic padding and fabric on it to make it a more concealed look.
Thanks!
Mike_WI 04-15-09, 02:55 PM Nice thread.
I read about your "composite output as a feed into a wallpanel at the entrance to my theater" in the Oppo BDP83 thread (link (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=16270518#post16270518)).
Do you have pics?
Sounds interesting.

Dont be so quick to jump on the 1080p bandwagon. Its not as impressive and as big a step as going from vhs to dvd. Its more like...Laser Disc to DVD jump....BUT most everyone here seems to have a ton of money so maybe im speaking from a poor stay at home dads thinking..
But you can go with upconverting DVD/BluRay player that does just about as good as a true 1080p..Just my 2cents.

barhoram 06-12-09, 03:56 PM Stage and Theater carpet are now done!
Stage carpet is flat black...the blackest I could find.
Theater carpet is Masland...and a bit pricey...but we love it in there!

mikieson 06-12-09, 03:58 PM Looking great man...I bet you are ready to get it done and start munchin on some popcorn and chillin..:)
barhoram 06-12-09, 04:33 PM Last Punchlist:
Carpet for the theater, riser and stage. DONE
Tile for the lobby area. DONE
Door knobs for all 3 doors. Any recommendations on good ones? DONE
Trim for 4" recessed lights. Can I use trim other than Halo in my Halo boxes? DONE
Bass Shakers for riser (2nd row of seats). Need to attach them to riser. DONE
Black GOM for behind stage
Enclose lighting panel (needs soundproof door).
Rack for equipment (currently in entertainment center) DONE
Rattle in SUB: still trying to figure out the rattle coming from my Velodyne DD15. DONE. Loose Screw
Projector upgrade: Pearl ???DONE JVC RS-20!
new to the list:
1) I went ahead and had the unfinished space in the equipment room carpeted with leftovers from the theter and stage. Putting all of the equipment into the Liebert rack really freed up some space....as it's only the rack in there now. Looks like I will be finishing the space and turning it into a Game Room. Pics to come...
2) Lobby Area: Need to hang all of the theater memoribilia, posters, signs, etc. I've accumulated over the build.
3) Security System. Panel behind stage is 15 years old. Need to install new system and add monitoring for garage doors, kids bedroms, motion and potentially IP cams. With the lights down, the doors closed and a movie close to THX levels, its like you're in a different world. Have to keep tabs on the kids ;) HAI is the direction i'm leaning.
4) Better pictures. Struggling with the bold colors and low lights in the theater.
Just came upon this thread, and I am glad to see that it is still alive. I live on the west side currently, and I am getting ready for a HT setup. Can you guys recommend any shops in town for projectors and A/V equipment in general? Google is not being much help. I would like to see & hear equipment before I plunk down cash.

If you are willing to drive to south of Dayton, they have several projection setups at a place called Hanson A/V. I looked months back and they had an RS20, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, and a few others.
