It looks like it is really coming together. I really like this forum a lot because people are not sheep. They decide to build the room the way they picture it and it always seems to turn out good. We can rely on eachother for ideas and then come up with ways to implement them in our own rooms. Keep up the hard work! jikkjack 01-18-07, 02:10 PM thanks worms!!! thanks zxlr8!!! BFauska 01-18-07, 03:48 PM When you paint that door flat black be sure to sand it well first. Painting flat over something with any shine to it at all can be a tricky process. The room is looking great. I like your very basic collumns. The keep the room from looking plain, but at the same time they are flat enough to keep from crowding into your modestly sized space. Soooo close to being done, I bet you can taste it. Good work, Brian jimfitz 01-18-07, 09:13 PM Love the seats, do they come with ButtKickers??? ;) Great Job!! utah997 01-18-07, 10:22 PM Just spent the last 30 minutes or so reading through pretty much the whole thread. Your HT looks fantastic, nice work. Very clean look... I admire how much you have done on your own. Can't wait to see the completed pics with Berklines in place. :D jikkjack 01-19-07, 08:20 AM BFauska - thanks for tip. You are correct in your assessment of the getting soooo close. I am going to work on the trim this weekend but staining/poly is such a tedious chore it will most likely take a week to finish. I am hoping the room will be 100% complete by the middle of February. jimfitz - they are a new portable line of Berks. I really like the way the blue clashes with pretty much every color in the Home Theater. They are eye kickers. :p ;) I am ordering my Berklines as soon as I decide which ones I want. I built the room for 2 rows of 3 088's. But now I am thinking about going with 2 rows of 2 090's. I will have 3 bars stools at the bar but they will most likely only be used during sporting events and not movie watching. utah997 - thanks dude. It has been very fun and I learned a lot from this forum. Craigo87 01-19-07, 04:24 PM jikkjack, Hey dude, I've currently got the same seats in my theater. Gotta love that indoor outdoor feel it gives to the cave! :D We hosted a New Year's party and had 5 of those camping seats as well as office chairs and a couple padded picnic table chairs for seating. Anyway, just wanted to tell you that I really like the clean lines of your theater. Very cool looking version of the one you modeled it after. Look forward to seeing the completed theater pics. Nicely done, Craigo BIGmouthinDC 01-19-07, 04:54 PM Jikkjack, Sweet looking space! If I would have known of your choice of theater seating I could have sent you a couple for the 2nd row. The wife and I used them at the beach a couple years ago. I bent mine (don't believe the stated weight limit) and I ended up tossing the pair out last year when we went with a different design. jikkjack 01-20-07, 08:32 AM Craigo - thanks man. I am probably going to have to do something like that for our Superbowl Party this year. I can't wait to get the real seats in. Bigmouth - thanks for the offer. Actually - I think my seats will match your blue decor so maybe I can send you a couple replacements after I get the Berks in. ;) I can't wait to see your finished theater. I REALLY like the way your theater/Bar area is turning out. Since I copied your theater bar design, I feel it is only right to let you know I may be *borrowing* a few of your designs of the new back bar space. I talked the wife into letting me move all of our workout equiptment to a bedroom upstairs and turn the current gym area into a game room/bar/kitchen - concession area. I plan to start that right after I finish the theater. Thanks again guys. More pics soon. :) swithey 01-20-07, 04:27 PM jikkjack, Just LOVE the look of the room. After looking at your very shallow columns and the wood accents between them, I'm thinking I might have gone that way in my room as well!! Oh well, that will be in my NEXT house  One suggestion on the seating -- I'd go with the 88s to get (2) extra comfy seats. We originally we're only going with (4) seats total in my room (v1.0) and decided to have seating for (8) instead (v5). I'm glad I did because it allows me to share all my efforts with more people -- and that is what it is all about. You could do the (2) 90s in the front (money seats) and (3) 88s in the back. We did a different style chair in the rear that don't even recline. No complaints from viewers -- they just love the movie experience in the room no matter where they sit. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see it done. indygreg 01-21-07, 12:40 AM we all see a lot of megabuck theaters on this forum but i am always so impressed when someone pulls off something really polished with creativity rather than just throwing money at. you have done a fantastic job here. simple plywood panels stained and finished with a lot of tlc look really dramatic against the black wall. my wife and i are wrapped around the axel trying to find colors and a look that we like so i know how hard that can be. you have really pulled this off with style. VERY nice work! greg jikkjack 01-21-07, 08:32 AM Thanks swithey - I think the wife and I have decided to go with the 2 rows of 088's. I was thinking about the 088's for the back and 2 090's in the front and that could still be a possiblility. Thanks Indygreg. I decided that since this was my first theater, I would keep it simple. I can't make that promise for the next theater though... :D I understand about trying to figure out a design. I was under way and decided to switch gears on my original design but I am definately glad I did. Ok - I am off to the basement to continue cutting and staining wood. I have a very limited amount of time today before 3 o'clock football. :) BritInVA 01-21-07, 10:48 AM Jikkjack - looking really nice. The fabric and colum workreally came out great. Cheers, Mark SatelliteGuy 01-23-07, 08:21 PM Great job Jikkjack! You may have already mentioned this, but what is the width of your riser? Your room looks fantastic. I hope mine comes out half as good. Zinema 01-24-07, 07:02 AM Very nice job Jikkjack! I really like the very simple concept of a single wall fabric color combined with wood elements - very sharp looking. Watching your thread to see pics of the final result - great work! jikkjack 01-24-07, 07:58 AM Thanks Mark! Thanks SatelliteGuy! My riser is 88 inches wide and built to accommodate 3 Berkline 088's at 86 inches wide. Thanks Zinema! I am currently staining the center pin-stripe wood that will hopefully be in place by this Friday. This weekend coming up, I am continuing my search for the perfect ceiling and stain grade base moulding... LIZALOO 01-24-07, 08:30 PM The perfect ceiling? What are your ideas for the ceiling? It looks to me like the ceiling is done?! Just scanned thru all your pics on your photo website, looks awesome. Did you get your chairs yet? BritInVA 01-24-07, 09:02 PM I am continuing my search for the perfect ceiling and stain grade base molding... Jason, Have you checked out Baird Bros (http://www.bairdbrothers.com/) for you mouldings ? Great choice, great price, great quality, quick to ship.......the only downside are shipping charges (no Tax if your lucky) and length (unless you want to increase shipping charges) but I have them on my permanent favourites list. Plus they know how to spell Mouldings.....so extra point their :D Cheers, Mark jikkjack 01-25-07, 07:28 AM LOL. Thanks Mark. I always like to experiment...didn't you see the Green Glue vs. Peanut Butter? jikkjack 01-25-07, 11:08 AM Lizaloo - Not ceiling but ceiling trim moulding. Jason jikkjack 01-26-07, 04:18 PM Like Steve (SWithey) and others, I am having a Super Bowl party and have designed a ticket to be sent out to all guest. I used ND23's design on this thread (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9579256&&#post9579256) and came up with this: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/RFSuperBowl2007.jpg I created the ticket in Photoshop CS and would be happy to share with others if you are interested. Here is the link to the PSD: Super Bowl Ticket Template .psd (http://blaze.gotdns.com/demos/superbowl/SuperBowl2007_Template.zip) If you want just a high resolution .jpg, here is a template that you can use in paint to add your theater name, and time for people to show up at your house. Super Bowl Ticket Template .jpg (http://blaze.gotdns.com/demos/superbowl/SuperBowl2007_Template.jpg). Thanks to Steve for helping me host the .zip and .jpg. I used the back of Steve's (SWithey's) ticket and a heavy card stock and the tickets look great. You can get the image for the back of the ticket here. (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9571732&&#post9571732) Steve also has a great looking ticket at the link above so check his out and he has visio files posted too. Happy Friday. :D Jason swithey 01-26-07, 05:47 PM Jason, Great job on the ticket!! I can host your file for you -- let's talk off-line. One request -- would you be able to make a high-res JPG without any theater name? That would allow anyone to customize it with their own name. I can host that one as well. Fuzzybear50 01-26-07, 11:30 PM Very cool. However, the Bears are considered the home team. Go Bears! jikkjack 01-27-07, 11:00 AM Thanks SWithey. I will send you a PM. Fuzzy - yeah but i just grabbed some graphics off of superbowl dot com. I wish I knew a place to find a thumnail size picture of all the helmets. jikkjack 01-27-07, 03:51 PM Theater Bar Update: While I am waiting for the final coat of poly to dry on my pin-stripe moulding for the center of the room, I worked on my bar today. I was inspired by Mark's (BritInVA) bar in his theater and decided to do something similar. I bought some plywood, black granite tile, red oak wood and red oak 3/4" trim to build my bar with. I am very pleased with how it is looking. I got the entire thing put together today and now am beginning the staining process. The only thing left to do tomorrow will be to cut the black granite tile. It will probably take 4 days to stain, sand and poly the trim before I can put the tiles in, but I will post pics when it is done. Here is where it is at right now. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC154.jpg and another shot: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC155.jpg I went with generic corbals because they are going to be painted black. No sense in wasting money on nice ones when you will never see them after they are painted black. I will post pics tomorrow of the pin-stripe trim moulding installed around the room. Should start to look finished. Still looking for the ceiling and base moulding. jikkjack 01-29-07, 07:37 AM Yesterday, I finished installing the moulding around the room. I also cut all of the black granite tile for the bar top. The tiles are still dirty in the pics below but it will give you an idea of what it will look like. I dry fit the tiles between stain coats just to make sure everything was right. I have put 4 coats of stain on now with a rag and will sand and apply a final brush coat of stain tonight. Then it is on to Polyurethane. I should be able to mortar in the tiles by Friday and grout by Saturday. The bar should be done just in time for Super Sunday!! I bought a bottle of granite/stone tile sealer that I will use after the tiles have been mortared into place. It will give it that nice deep gloss look. ;) http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC156.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC158.jpg Zinema 01-29-07, 08:26 AM Jason, wow - very nice looking bar top! And I have to thank you - I am looking for an idea for a large table in front of my first row of seats and two small tables left and right of the rear row.... Now I know what I want - I will reuse your granite-tile-outlined-with-wood design. Thanks - and keep more pics coming! jikkjack 01-29-07, 08:31 AM Glad to help. I borrowed the idea from Mark's (BritInVA) Thread! (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=9561174&&#post9561174) :D Zinema 01-29-07, 08:52 AM Yep, I know that - following Mark's thread also - but the inspiration just came in the second I saw the pics of your bar top, it's your fault now! :D Background: This morning I was showing my weekends work to my wife and we were talking about the tables I am going to build. We have already decided to have a wooden framing on the top (to match the riser wooden trim look) but were thinking about the filling inside the frame - so granite tiles is the answer. ;) BritInVA 01-29-07, 09:11 AM Jason - came out great. I love this forum - one of the things I really love is how we can all get some inspiration and ideas of other peoples work. The inspiration for my tile counter came from seeing mmmkam (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=650485) and scaesare (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=656887) counters. Cheers, Mark jikkjack 01-29-07, 09:15 AM Thanks Mark. Me too! jikkjack 01-29-07, 10:44 AM I updated this post with links to the Super Bowl Ticket Templates. Enjoy. Thanks Steve! Happy Friday. :D Jason actionPlant 01-29-07, 11:19 AM Man that bar is looking great. Maybe I missed it, but have your seats come yet? BritInVA 01-29-07, 11:20 AM Jason - Thanks for the Super Bowl Tickets - I will be using them :D Cheers, Mark jikkjack 01-29-07, 11:36 AM Thanks ActionPlant. Not yet. :( I should have them in the standard Berkline 6 - 8 week time frame. I was really hoping I would finish my theater by Super Bowl, but it is not going to happen. Good news is that the current seats are so damn uncomfortable, it forces me to finish the room instead of watch movies, play video games, watch sports. That will all change once the Berks arrive. :D :D :D No problem Mark! Thanks for the bar idea!!! chinadog 01-29-07, 11:54 AM Lookin' good man. Bar looks great. When is the base molding going to be done? Bud jikkjack 01-29-07, 12:04 PM Thanks Bud. I can't find any good moulding at the local big box stores so I am still looking for a place with nice stain grade moulding. strange_brew 01-29-07, 02:56 PM Looks awesome! Love the bar. I had the same problem with moulding. For some reason the big box stores don't carry Cherry millwork ;) I ended finding a local specialty store that can custom order pretty much anything I want. A little tough on the wallet but I think its the best way to go. jikkjack 01-29-07, 03:00 PM Thanks brew. Yeah. I agree. I am taking off of work this Friday to go to a store in North Gerogia. They have tons of moulding and worst case senerio, they can create something custom for me right on the spot. :) jikkjack 01-30-07, 10:09 AM I just ordered 3 bar stools for the home theater snack bar. They should match the decor and Berklines well. Bud Chiahead 01-30-07, 11:54 AM where did you get the stools? I have been looking for some and haven't found any I like. Let us know how you like them. jikkjack 01-30-07, 12:13 PM I found them on amazon.com. They had a great selection of bar stools there. chinadog 01-30-07, 12:42 PM I saw those out there and have been eyeing these on ebay: http://i6.ebayimg.com/06/i/000/79/e4/35ab_2.JPG item# 130051244353 Bud zxlr8 01-30-07, 12:58 PM Hmmm, I also was looking at a few granite bars before I built my candy counter. Looks great zxlr8. Is that plexi glass front? How do you access the candy? I am planning to build a candy counter in my game room and was thinking about re-using the idea there too. zxlr8 01-30-07, 03:57 PM Looks great zxlr8. Is that plexi glass front? How do you access the candy? I am planning to build a candy counter in my game room and was thinking about re-using the idea there too. Well I had a Bellogetti rack that was scavenged for it's 6 tempered glass shelves. 5 of them are smaller and ended up in my current rack. http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/6461/october2006313cp0.th.jpg (http://img300.imageshack.us/my.php?image=october2006313cp0.jpg) The last glass shelve was built into the front of the candy counter because it was the largest and sat on top of the Bellogetti originally. Access to the candy is behind the counter. jikkjack 01-30-07, 04:08 PM cool. Thanks zxlr8. I unfortunately, will need a unique design for front access. Will most likely use plexi-glass and sliding windows. chinadog 01-30-07, 04:23 PM Leave it open in the front! its not like you've got kids sneakin' candy! Bud W00lly 01-30-07, 04:48 PM Vary nice set up indeed jikkjack 01-31-07, 08:32 AM Leave it open in the front! its not like you've got kids sneakin' candy! Bud Actually - that is probably the better idea and exactly what I will do. W00lly - thanks dude. jikkjack 01-31-07, 08:36 AM Bud - Funny you mentioned kids, Sara answered the door last night and there was a college girl selling subscriptions to the AJC newspaper and she asked her if her mom was home. :D Note: My wife is 28 so don't get the wrong idea. chinadog 01-31-07, 08:46 AM Oh man, I had a good laugh on that one. Must have made Sara's day! Bud jikkjack 01-31-07, 08:53 AM Oh man, I had a good laugh on that one. Must have made Sarah's day! Bud She was pissed. :D I don't understand women. swithey 01-31-07, 10:03 AM She was pissed. :D I don't understand women. LOL!! If she was 40 and the girl made the same comment, she would have kissed the girl :D jikkjack 02-01-07, 03:56 PM I am trying to put together an ISO for Super Bowl trivia slides I created. If I manage to pull it off, I am happy to share. 43 slides and they look like: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/Slide1a.jpg Will update later. BritInVA 02-01-07, 06:45 PM Cool idea........you might teech us 'Alliens' a thing or two :D Then maybe when the time comes around you can do same for the MLB World Series. Would love to know how a North American series got that name......the guy with the idea obviously didn't travel much :p Cheers, Mark LIZALOO 02-05-07, 03:12 PM Now the big game is over, any updates? Did you get to enjoy it in your new theater? If so, have any guests that "oooh'd and aaahh'd" over it?! Just curious, wish ours would pick up some speed, am anxious to get watchin'! chinadog 02-06-07, 08:04 AM Hey man, did you get your bar stools yet? Bud jikkjack 02-06-07, 11:16 AM Hey Lizaloo - Yes and Yes (lots of ohhhing and aaahhhing :) ). I did manage to get the bar finished, stained and poly'd the base and crown moulding, and installed the base moulding. Bud - Bar stools are scheduled to be in this week by Thursday. I should have the crown in by the end of tonight. That leaves me in a waiting pattern for the Berklines. After this week, my theater will be done from a construction standpoint. WOW. Typing that feels weird. I am going to start the game room this weekend. :D :D :D scaesare 02-06-07, 11:32 AM I just ordered 3 bar stools for the home theater snack bar. I am going on blind faith and hope they are as nice in person as in the picture. BritInVA 02-06-07, 12:40 PM Wonder if we can get a PowerBuy on them stools - exactly what I've been looking at :) NeoOiler 02-06-07, 12:59 PM Hey Jason, A made a little more progress this weekend check out the thread. I love the stools. If i had room i would totally do something like that. Ryan LIZALOO 02-06-07, 02:42 PM Jason - how did you determine where to put your pilasters? (columns) I think this was mentioned a while back but I'll ask again...what height did you mount your sconces (and refresh my memory, what height is your lowest point in ceiling/soffit?)? How many columns do you have? Did you build them post drywall? Thanks! L scaesare 02-06-07, 02:48 PM Steve, How do you like the stools? I am going on blind faith and hope they are as nice in person as in the picture. Here's (http://caesare.homeip.net:32171/basement/slides/IMG_2011.htm) a picture of them at my bar: http://caesare.homeip.net:32171/basement/slides/IMG_2011.jpg They aren't the highest end, that's for sure, but they are quite comfortable and reasonably sturdy. And I loke the look. I've had to re-tighten the fasteners (all 3000 of them ;) ) on one of them, but other than that they've been fine. We use them for secondary seating when we have company over for movie nite, and I've sat thru 3-hours of King King on them and can still feel my rear, so that's a reasonable testament. ts69vette 02-06-07, 03:10 PM Hi Jason, I am fairly new to the forum and I just finished your thread. WOW! Your theater looks awesome. I can't wait to see the finished pics. Great job! Regards, Troy jikkjack 02-06-07, 05:20 PM Jason - how did you determine where to put your pilasters? How many columns do you have? Did you build them post drywall? Thanks! L Liza - I divided the side walls into 3 parts (before adding the fake wall at the front) to determine the sides and back wall. I then put a column at the center of each of the 3 parts excluding the corners. I have 6 total columns and the sconces are at 6 feet high on center. The ceiling is 8 foot 2 inches. When you stand on the riser, the ceiling is a little over 6.5 feet. The riser is 18 inches tall. The columns were framed out and insulated. I then drywalled them and added a wooden front and black fabric wrapped sides. The wood on the front of the columns hangs over each side 1". This makes the black fabric wrapped furring strips level with the front when installed. jikkjack 02-06-07, 05:27 PM They aren't the highest end, that's for sure, but they are quite comfortable and reasonably sturdy. Thanks for the update scaesare. Your theater looks great. I just finished looking at the pictures. I am planning to use the stools for secondary seating too for football guest. They will be the place to sit and snack during the game. Good to hear that you could make it through a movie without loosing feeling in the legs or rear. I am excited to see how they look in the room and will not feel bad if I need to put some peeps in them during a movie too. Thanks! jikkjack 02-06-07, 05:28 PM Hi Jason, I am fairly new to the forum and I just finished your thread. WOW! Your theater looks awesome. I can't wait to see the finished pics. Great job! Beauty theater, too. chinadog 02-06-07, 08:40 PM Hey, did you get your molding yet? Can you see it if you aren't right next to it? These samples are too small. You went with black all around, right (not some dark color that photographs as black)? Beauty theater, too. Hey Dave, Yes - I have black expo cloth and yes it does have a hint of texture to it that I actually really like. As a matter of fact, it is the sole reason that I chose it over GoM. You can only see it when you get within a couple of feet but I really like it. Thanks dude. jikkjack 02-06-07, 08:59 PM Hey, did you get your molding yet? Bud Yep - and after tomorrow, it will all be installed and done. I will have new pictures this week of the finished theater minus the Berklines. Man it is looking really different down there now that all the moulding is in and the bar is finished. More soon. :D LIZALOO 02-06-07, 09:50 PM Jason - your riser is 18"? Wow, what do you have 3 steps up at 6" each? You are doing 2 rows, right? How far out do your columns project? Do you have switches/outlets in any of the columns? I think I'll put a bank of switches in one of the columns but it will have to be deep enough to house the box (was thinking 4")...what do you think? Am planning to build post drywall to get a better visual on locations. I don't have the ability to have a schemata like you did, wow, that was nice. jikkjack 02-07-07, 07:57 AM Jason - your riser is 18"? Wow, what do you have 3 steps up at 6" each? Liza - I only have 1 step but now you have me thinking it might be more like 15". I will measure it tonight and update you. Honestly, it was so long ago I am going off of memory...and that can be dangerous. My columns are all 4 inches deep. What kind of switches? I didn't put any switches in my columns to keep them looking uniform. Good idea to attach them after the room is done. If I were doing my room over again I would do it that way as well. jikkjack 02-07-07, 08:00 AM Wonder if we can get a PowerBuy on them stools - exactly what I've been looking at :) Mark - I got mine at a great price on amazon. Let me know if you want the link. dc_pilgrim 02-07-07, 09:06 AM Yes - I have black expo cloth and yes it does have a hint of texture to it that I actually really like. As a matter of fact, it is the sole reason that I chose it over GoM. You can only see it when you get within a couple of feet but I really like it. Thanks Jason. I am going with Expo Cloth for budgetary reasons. I thought the texture wasn't a problem, but like I said it was hard to visual from a small sample. Appreciate the feedback. scaesare 02-07-07, 11:32 AM Thanks for the update scaesare. Thanks! Cool.. I'll be interested in knowing how you like them as well... I've considered getting a pair of the ones without backs as well, just to have some more "tall" seating around... scaesare 02-07-07, 11:33 AM Mark - I got mine at a great price on amazon. Let me know if you want the link. That's where I got mine too. jikkjack 02-07-07, 10:47 PM Got the stools put together and they are a little on the red side. They look more mahogony than cherry. I don't know if I am going to keep them yet. I will decide by the end of the week. The stools are nice though. Good build quality and they feel sturdy. I will snap some pictues and maybe get some others to chime in with opinions. BritInVA 02-07-07, 11:05 PM Thats been my concern......my panelling is more of a light oak to cherry finish and so far all the pics on-line looked a little too red. As the wood is going to be difficult to match been leaning to a black frame with red seats but not found anything affordable yet. Cheers, Mark chinadog 02-08-07, 06:54 AM What are your plans if you decide not to keep them? I want to check them out since I almost bought the same ones. I don't want to class either though, but now at least I can get a first hand look. Bud jikkjack 02-08-07, 08:30 AM Mark, I looked at them again this morning and I think they are growing on me. I think I am so use to not seeing anything in the room that now when I do see something, it looks out of place. Anyway, let me get some feedback from you guys. Here are some pictures. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC159.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC160.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC161.jpg Bud - you should swing by Saturday if you get a chance and look at them. I am terrible at photography so like most of my pictures here, everything looks different in person. Zinema 02-08-07, 09:22 AM Looking damn good!! jikkjack 02-08-07, 09:34 AM Thanks Zinema. I just got done stirring the pot in your build thread. ;) actionPlant 02-08-07, 11:16 AM Looks amazing. :) Can't wait to see the rest of the furniture in there. swithey 02-08-07, 01:27 PM jikkjack, I love the look of your bar. The color of the chairs is not at exact match but I think it compliments the color of the bar quite well. The granite tile on top looks outstanding - nice job! Did you use white/off-white grout or is it black but the flash makes it look white? Was your intention to "highlight" the grout lines? Just curious. BritInVA 02-08-07, 02:03 PM Jason - agree the colour match is not exact but does not stand out a great deal in your case. I think my woodwork is a little lighter thou. Cheers, Mark jikkjack 02-08-07, 02:05 PM Thanks ActionPlant. Me too. Thanks Steve. Actually - I bought black sandless grout but when it dried, it looks dark grey and the flash is making it look whiter than it is in person. I actually hate the fact that it is not the jet black color it was upon application. I might try to stain it black before sealing the grout. LIZALOO 02-08-07, 04:47 PM Jason, just curious - could be the pics, are the bar stools more similar to the color of your wood trim in the room? It looks like they are? jikkjack 02-09-07, 07:34 AM Liza - nope. It is just the picture. I think I am going to sand down my bar and put more coats of cherry stain on the oak rails to darken it a little to help with the color transitions. jikkjack 02-09-07, 07:40 AM So - I am about 1 hour away from being completely finished with the theater room construction. I just have to hang the crown and base molding at the screen wall. I will most likely finish everything Saturday and then it will be a short wait for the chairs. I will post pictures of the room this weekend. Looks great and I am very happy with the way it turned out. I have also decided to paint both sides of my theater door black. One side is white to match the rest of the house but I don't like the stark contrast of the door when it is open into the room being white. On to my next project - The game room. I will post pictures of it too since it will have a big flat screen TV that is sync'd up to my theater. I plan to build a custom game table, Mame machine, and concession stand. I am starting the soffits this weekend and will also try to build the wall bar extension and get the drywall on it. More pics soon. scaesare 02-09-07, 10:55 AM Thats been my concern......my panelling is more of a light oak to cherry finish and so far all the pics on-line looked a little too red. As the wood is going to be difficult to match been leaning to a black frame with red seats but not found anything affordable yet. Cheers, Mark You know where you can come look at some first hand... Cherokee180c 02-09-07, 06:58 PM Jason, I am thinking of copying your "false" column look, as I have a non symetrical room with only small separate areas to cover and want a similar look. How do you think it would work to increase the overhang and spacing from the wall a little bit to fit rope lighting on a dimmer circuit hidden behind the columns to give each column a glow? Also did you put the wood trim strip in the middle solely for looks or did you have to because of the width of the expo cloth. My wall sections are each a maximum of 5' wide, so the column in the middle and bass traps in the corners should allow me to roll the fabric vertically to avoid a middle seam if I want. I am going to post my starting thread tonight with a layout. I really would like any hints you can give me and I am also working with Bpape for advice and materials. Look for "The Man Cave" cinema thread. jikkjack 02-10-07, 08:48 AM Hey Cherokee, Sure - That would be cool. I would definately like to see that so I will be watching your thread. The wood strip in my design were actually planned (for design reason) but yes did work out well due to the width of the fabric to hide staples. Sounds good. BPape did a great job with my room with the analysis and materials. I think you are very wise to start with an acoustical design before construction. I wish I would have done it that way. I wasted a few bucks on trying to emulate a popular design and was not happy with the results. jikkjack 02-12-07, 09:36 AM Talked to Ben last night and the Berks should be here in a few weeks. I got the blue LED lit cup holders on the berks for cool factor and if it gets old, I will just unplug them. So when you put a drink in the cup holder it will actually light up and turn off when the cup is not in it. :D BIGmouthinDC 02-12-07, 12:13 PM Please post some Pics of those cup holders when you get the chairs. I was kind of interested when they were first discussed some time ago. I believe they are available as a retro fit so let us know how they work. jikkjack 02-12-07, 12:25 PM Big - only if I can come up to see your finished theater. ;) I can't wait to see more pics. I got them because I went over to a local Home Theater Store to look at the Berkline 088 in person and noticed that the standard cup holders have aluminum (silver) paint around the top of the black plastic cup holder. The (silver) paint was peeling away. I thought that sucked so I upgraded. I don't know if I will like the light effect but definitely will enjoy a better cup holder from the quality perspective. jikkjack 02-14-07, 10:20 AM Updates: I am waiting to take the final shots of my theater until I get the Berks in. Until then, I will post pictures of my Game Room that is adjacent to the theater since it will have a media room aspect to it as well. The game room is about 25 feet by 14 feet at the front and 9 feet wide at the back (kitchenette area). The back kitchenette area is about 10 feet by 9 feet. I have finished the half-wall and the first of the soffits for the back kitchenette area. My beer fridge, as seen in this picture, is getting painted soon. I am painting it black and then going to use a soft metal stainless steel adhesive cover for the doors. The fridge will live in the back right corner and will have cabinets beside it with a huge salt water fish tank on top. This area will also house the popcorn machine, hot dog machine, and corn dog machine behind the41" height bar(half-wall). :D I am still deciding on what do do with the larger area of the room as far as soffits go. I might just use the soffit in the back to add a break in the room to distinguish the two areas. The front part of the game room will house a huge custom built game table and mame machine. It will also have a concession counter and large plasma TV mounted on the wall to the rear right of the picture below. I really like the way BigMouthinDC did his back bar area so I will be incorporating the rounded soffit/marquee design into this room (hope you don't mind BigDC but it is just too cool not to copy). Here is the current state of the room. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC162.jpg jikkjack 02-14-07, 10:24 AM I plan to build 2 columns (one on each side of the room as it enters the back kitchenette area. I will frame the bar with wainscoating (b-board) and behind it will be cabinets for the popcorn, hotdog and corndog machines. I will put in a chair rail around the room with panels, frame and drywall the columns and soffits, and remove the big center light. I will run all of the power for the drop pendant lights and get everything ready for painting and crown moulding. After that, I will begin the game table and mame machine. More updates/pics soon. scaesare 02-14-07, 11:08 AM Looks like a nice plan, Jason. I'm interested in building a MAME cabinet as well... let me know what you decide to do in that regards... I'm still researching... BIGmouthinDC 02-14-07, 12:30 PM Jason here are some construction pics of how I did the rounded soffit. I used the flex C tract, got at Global Building supply in Leesburg. Not cheap, $2.5 ft/ each track, but worked great. Comes in 10 ft sections. http://www.smxscreen.com/forum/showthread.php?t=193 Then once the soffit was done the Mrs asked "you aren't going to put a plain old straight bar in front of that are you? So, http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b393/bigmouthindc/DSC00363.jpg BIGmouthinDC 02-14-07, 12:45 PM Steve I have a strong interest in a MAME system as well but gotta get the room done first. Would like to learn of your research and experience as it unfolds. jikkjack 02-14-07, 01:19 PM I have around 10,000 ROMS. Thanks BigDC. Looks awesome. Steve - I will post lots of pics and share notes with you when I build. :) scaesare 02-14-07, 02:22 PM Yeah, I have a boatload as well (about 5 DVD's worth)m but I think that's only about 3000... right now I just play them via my HTPC. DC-- Will do also.. maybe we an get a 3-pack of some of the parts we need! ;-) jikkjack 02-14-07, 03:14 PM Sounds good Steve. Maybe we can get a place to share ROMs too.! ;) ;) jikkjack 02-15-07, 05:46 PM More pics and renders. Last night a installed more soffits but couldn't work too long due to valentines dinner plans. :D Here is the latest progress picture. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC163.jpg Today I experimented with the google program sketch-up and came up with a quick front and back render of the room. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/gameroom.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/gameroom2.jpg They are crude but give an idea of the concept. I think I am going to integrate the MAME machine into the Plasma/LCD wall. The wife named the bar/game room area "The Rusty Anchor" in keeping with the Nautical theme we have at our house. I am heading over to Ikea tonight to try and find the curved light like BigMouthinDC has for his letters on the soffit. More pics soon. chinadog 02-15-07, 09:05 PM The Rusty Anchor.... I like that. Is that the name of ship or a bar you've been to in Savannah? A ship name would be cool, I've seen some good ones like: Stiff Ripples Sea Mo' Butt Smells Like Fish Sea Hagg Sea My Johnson Puddle Pirate Pier Pressure Bud jikkjack 02-15-07, 09:17 PM LOL! :D bpape 02-15-07, 10:00 PM Bud - have another beer..... Sea my Johnson???? Bryan chinadog 02-15-07, 11:11 PM Bud - have another beer..... Sea my Johnson???? Bryan Bryan, you don't have to tell me twice ... in fact, you don't have to tell me! :D Bud BritInVA 02-16-07, 09:11 AM ......... Sea My Johnson Reminds me of the urban legend that went around about a British childrens show called Captain Pugwash that had characters called Master Bates, Seaman Staines, and Roger the Cabin Boy (it didn't but many people believe it did). Cheers, Mark jikkjack 02-16-07, 10:51 AM I updated the renders above to better reflect the room colors and changed to a rounded soffit design. This weekend I should be able to get all of the soffit and columns completed. More pics soon. jikkjack 02-16-07, 11:05 AM Here is another option that I am considering for the MAME machine. This probably will not fly due to the imbalance it creates on the wall. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/gameroom3.jpg swithey 02-16-07, 04:16 PM Here is another option that I am considering for the MAME machine. This probably will not fly due to the imbalance it creates on the wall. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/gameroom3.jpg Have you considered going with a 21st century looking MAME machine? 32" flat panel hung on the wall and wall mounted shelf with the MAME controller (http://www.x-arcade.com/tankstick-arcade-game.shtml) built in. This would have limited obtrusion into the room but still keep the same gaming experience (minus the cabinet of course). AND -- it might pass the WAF test :D As for the PC, just go with a mini-case design (like one the size of a Mac-mini but the PC equivalent - Shuttle (http://us.shuttle.com/X100.aspx), AOpen (http://minipc.aopen.com/us/news.htm) or even a real Mac-Mini running bootcamp (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/bootcamp.html)) <OR> depending on what is on the other side of that wall, put it there <OR> get a VGA extender and put the PC in the bar area to the left. Just some food for thought :) Chiahead 02-16-07, 05:15 PM Steve, those are some sweet ideas. I may have to incorporate a few of those. Even if you don't want the shelf, you could place it on a table, and just have a port near by to plug into, when not playing, you can hide it away in a cupboard. jikkjack 02-16-07, 05:32 PM Steve, those are some sweet ideas. I am going to go down to work on the basement now and will think about those for a while. Steve - I am absolutely going with that x-arcade controller. PM me your address. I have something to send you on Monday. ;) Thanks guys. BFauska 02-17-07, 01:57 AM Jason, Great looking place, after so much work to get a quality product at least look into the quality you can get by building your own controls for your mame machine. Check out the Build your own arcade controls forum (http://forum.arcadecontrols.com). You can get better components than the ones in the X-arcade and build yourself a custom control panel that maybe mounts to the wall with a hanger system or something. It's at least worth looking into. I just ordered some controls yesterday and I am going to make a control panel for mame and then maybe build a whole cabinet later. Good work, and good luck on the future projects, Brian wuudogg 02-18-07, 07:20 AM Great pics. Plenty of inspiration here on the site. Regarding the Mame controller, Check out SlikStik website. They make a sweet controller deck. Great unit, complete with drivers required to config your system. I had them custom build a Quad or four player unit for me. Can't post pics yet. Need 4 more posts before it will lift the restriction. Zinema 02-18-07, 12:47 PM Jason, very nice design for your bar area - I like it! jikkjack 02-19-07, 08:24 AM @BFauska - I will definitely have to look into that. Are you going to post pictures of your progress? I would like to see your build if so. Thanks man. @wuudogg - will do. Welcome to the forum. @Zinema - Thanks Mike! I will have pictures tomorrow. jikkjack 02-19-07, 08:32 AM Got a lot done on Saturday but not so much done on Sunday. Busy weekend so I will have to post updated pictures tomorrow. Tonight I just have to attach the rounded soffit to the ceiling and begin running power wire for the LED lights. I got the LED lights that BigMouthinDC found at Ikea. They were on clearance so I picked up 2 boxes. They were on sale for $19.99 each. Status: - all soffits are built and installed (minus the rounded soffit which goes in tonight) - bar has b-board (wainscoting) installed jikkjack 02-19-07, 10:24 PM Just finished installing the rounded front soffit. You can't really tell from the photo but the soffit is nicely rounded. Tomorrow - I will begin to install my pvc moulding that will hold the LED lights in front of the soffit and put in all the new can lights around the soffit. I may even get to the pendant lights (maybe). http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC164.jpg chinadog 02-19-07, 10:30 PM Think you'll put a sink in? I think you can do it by putting a pump in your workshop and tying into the other waste pipes. You wouldn't need to put it in the floor either. Instant wet bar! Bud jikkjack 02-20-07, 07:36 AM That has been the debate lately. To sink or not to sink. I am still don't know if we would use it enough to justify putting in all the extra time to include it. I do have a spot picked out for it in the event I decide to put it in...just still don't know. Most of the peeps I know that have a sink in the basement use it mostly to empty out cups/cans. If that is the case then I have the bathroom sink right around the corner for that. Anybody have thoughts on this? I am definitely not putting in a dishwasher but will most likely hook up the ice maker on the fridge. scaesare 02-20-07, 10:18 AM That has been the debate lately. To sink or not to sink. I'm not sure one is ever really needed but wanted to ask. chinadog 02-20-07, 11:29 PM Interesting comment Steve. Since I have a disposer upstairs and not in the bar, I have to watch what I put in the sink. After the (not so) Super Bowl party, I also put scraps from plates down the sink like 10 times. I should have put one in just for that reason. Jason, really consider it, you won't regret having it later, but you might regret not having it. I use it for all those half drunk beers I never finish ..... oh, wait, that was the nightmare I had last night .... :D Bud jikkjack 02-21-07, 08:14 AM Good feedback. I will run it through the WAF machine. I installed my PVC moulding on the ceiling in front of the rounded soffit and got the LED lights installed. I should have all of the new can lights and pendants installed and powered up by tonight. Pics tomorrow. scaesare 02-21-07, 03:31 PM -- HIJACK ALERT -- Steve, Did you ever consider putting a garbage disposal in as well? I'm not sure one is ever really needed but wanted to ask. I did, but it never really happened. I've not really needed it thus far, as most of my prep/waste down inthe bar is liquid. Sure wuuldn't hurt tho. jikkjack 02-22-07, 08:01 AM Small update. Last night the wifes new kitchen curtain rods/curtains came in so I had less time in the game room than expected. I did manage to cut in the round electrical boxes and hang both new pendant lights. I am pleased with the look but do need to adjust the right light a little bit tonight when I get home. It is about 1/4" higher than the left light. I decided to mount them behind the soffit. They look better in person than in my picture but it will give you an idea. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC165.jpg jikkjack 02-22-07, 08:03 AM We have bushed nickel throughout the entire house so I choose to use a 3" brushed nickel can lights to spruce up the new kitchenette area. Here is what I will hopefully get to hang up tonight: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC166.jpg The cool thing about these lights is that the light lens can be aimed. jikkjack 02-22-07, 08:09 AM Ok - Here is a picture of the curved LED light strip that has about a 99% chance of being removed tonight when I get home. The wife hates it and says the light looks like a grow light. :o She also thinks that due to the fact that the register is in the way and that I have the cap between the light and soffit that it just doesn't look good. I actually think I agree with her but I wanted to add this so bad after seeing how cool it looked in BigMouthinDC's basement. :( So - I am now thinking that I will mount 2 of the Nickel can lights in front of the soffit and just aim the lens of each towards the soffit. Should look better and still allow me to put up the letters and name the space. Any thoughts, opinions or suggestions? http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC167.jpg BIGmouthinDC 02-22-07, 09:46 AM Sorry, my design is not working for you. I do notice a couple of things. First I don't think it's long enough for the amount of signage you showed in your sketch. and second I don't think you angled the LEDs down enough to put the sweet spot in the middle of the soffit which might have taken a little off that cap. Another thing to consider is the final colors that you plan for the soffit and letters. I'm using a blue/grey/graphite scheme with silver/steel metallic accents and that color LED works for us. I actually tried some xenon bulbs in miniature 12v fixtures and the yellowish cast makes the graphite look like brown mud. So, if it's any consolation my light stript is the second iteration. The first system, I put up we hated too. jikkjack 02-22-07, 10:40 AM Yeah - me too. I really like it but agree it is definitely not long enough. That damn vent is the reason for that. I still may figure a way to salvage it but if not, my back-up plan is to use the lights in the future concession cabinet that will be placed on the right wall. The lights will match the salt water fish tank nicely. Or - maybe I can talk the wife into moving...hmmm...I do have a lot of cool ideas for my next theater and game room. #1 being a bigger space. :D Zinema 02-22-07, 03:38 PM Or - maybe I can talk the wife into moving...hmmm...I do have a lot of cool ideas for my next theater and game room. #1 being a bigger space. :D Come on Jason, finish this one first! :D I agree that 2 or 3 can lights in front of the soffit aimed towards it will look better imo. Looking good so far! jikkjack 02-23-07, 08:27 AM So - I put up the bottom layer of drywall on the soffits last night so I could begin installing the new 3" can lights. They have clips that lock them into place so no need to run hanger bars. I managed to get 3 cans installed in the soffit and did some testing to determine the maximum angle they can shoot light. Unfortunately, there is no possible way I can get them to fire at the rounded soffit. This weekend I am going to try and find a low visibility track light system to use for the rounded soffit. That should do the trick. No pictures today because I left the digital camera at work yesterday. I should have a lot of updated progress after this weekend. I don't have any plans but to finish the soffits. :D I hope that means mud/taped and painted but we will see. I really want to get started on my game table. Anyone out there built one of those before. I am looking to make a hybrid poker table/domino table. jikkjack 02-26-07, 09:10 AM Weekend update. So I got a lot done this weekend but took a lot longer than expected. Here is the latest picture from the basement. You can see that all drywall is installed and all electrical run. HD was out of the 2 track lights I want for the right wall but they should be back in stock this week or next. Adding all of the 3" lighting highlighted the fact that I needed 1 more coat of mud on the seams around the room. :o So I applied that and began mudding the hardest part of the new construction. The little wall on the right of the picture is not square and sticks out more on the top than bottom. I am having to use a lot of mud to bring it all level so that will look funny for a week. Tonight, I will start mudding the rest of the columns, soffits and add the wooden trim piece to the left column where there is a gap between the column and the wall. Then after numerous mudding and taping hours, I will paint this new monstrosity and start putting in the cabinets. I also managed to paint my fridge over the weekend and it is drying in the workshop. I am planning on buying some metal contact adhesive that will give the illusion that the once white refrigerator is now a stainless steal fridge. :D http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC169.jpg More pics soon. BritInVA 02-26-07, 09:43 AM You have been busy....... The one lesson I learned and anyone reading should heed warning to is ensuring you have plenty of light and be very finicky with your drywall seams. I had poor lighting conditions and what looked good was actually quite poor and is the one thing I wish I could redo. Keep up the great work. Cheers, Mark jikkjack 03-26-07, 08:35 AM Got some more done in the basement this weekend. I finished mudding/taping/sanding/painting of the new soffit area in the game room. It is looking pretty good but still need to paint the base moulding in these pictures. Next will be crown moulding installation. I will begin work on the concession stand/salt water fish tank table this weekend. Then, it will be time to build the game table and install all of the new cabinets and counter tops. Tomorrow, I take delivery of some stainless steel foil that will be put on the doors of the old beer fridge. I painted the sides, top and trim pieces black. It should look pretty good if the foil applies as advertised. We shall see... http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC172.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC173.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC171.jpg SVonhof 03-26-07, 09:19 AM What happened to your fridge? Jason - looking good. You seem to have your drywall mudding skills to perfection. Cheers, Mark jikkjack 03-26-07, 10:03 AM Thanks Mark. The column on the right took about 15 coats to even out the irregular shape of the wall. Cherokee180c 03-26-07, 01:04 PM What kind of black paint did you use on the fridge? I have a white fridge now that is going in our theater room near the wet bar and I would much rather have it black. How much work was involved to spray black (coats and time)? Chiahead 03-26-07, 01:21 PM I did my white fridge for our kitchen using a black appliance epoxy spray paint. Get it at any of the box stores. I taped it off and used about 5 cans for the whole fridge. Sides and tope were hurried, but not a big deal because theyt would be hidden. I took my time on the front. I used 2 coats on the front. It seems to take a day to dry reall well, so that fingernails no longer scratch it, so just be patient. Also, I did it in the garage in the fall, so it was a little cooler out. jikkjack 03-26-07, 03:28 PM chiahead is right. I used 2 cans of black appliance epoxy in spray cans. 1 day of drying time per coat and it looks perfect. They were by the other can lights. I can look for a model number tonight when I get home and will PM it to you. They are pretty cool for installation in a soffit because you don't have to pick up the optional hanger bars. These lights also have a clip lock system that makes installation a breeze in a soffit. I held it up to our Kitchen fridge, which is real stainless steal, and it looks exactly the same. I should have some pictures tonight or tomorrow morning for you to look at. No problem. jikkjack 03-30-07, 07:28 AM Steve and others...didn't get a chance to attach the foil last night. Wife brought home MotorStorm for the PS3 and of course you can figure out the rest... They were Cherry right? everything in my lobby / theater is Cherry so I may try and get the same ones. Only problem is Amazon won't ship anything but BMV up here so I'll have to find a different source. Do you know who the manufacturer is? I'm a Direct Buy member so might be able to get them that way... Craig. jikkjack 04-01-07, 08:25 AM They were supposed to be cherry but in my opinion look more mahogany. You can find them on ebay too from merchants that I think would ship to Canada too! :) I guess they are probably made in china...maybe right next to the Berkline shop that is making my chairs. Maybe that is why it is taking sooooo long for them to arrive. jikkjack 04-02-07, 08:00 AM Weekend Update... This weekend - here is my plan. 1. Put foil on the fridge 2. Build the concession stand/salt-water fish tank holder for the game room 3. Install crown moulding in game room 4. Begin work on the game table - if time permits 1. Foil was a miserable failure. This stuff bubbled profusely and was hard to apply on curved edges. This weekend coming up I am going to just paint the front of the fridge black. 2. Done. Pic in next post. 3&4 = didn't get to them. Will have to plan to do this next weekend. jikkjack 04-02-07, 08:05 AM Finished my concession stand. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC174.jpg I still need to put the MDF around the base 2x4's and then paint. I spent the weekend putting up all of the crown moulding in the game room, painting the concession counter, and finalizing the new cabinet locations. I also painted the doors of my fridge black. Delayed construction by MONTHS. :) Nice cabinets, by the way. I put the *exact* same ones in the wine cellar. -drin jikkjack 04-11-07, 08:08 AM Thanks Drin. I have a feeling my wine cellar will take up a good chunk of time too due to the fact I am planning on ripping down cedar to 1.5" x 1.5" strips. Good thing that it is not a huge space but it will definitely take a lot of cuts, sanding and time to put together. drin 04-11-07, 09:02 AM Sorry to hijack, but since the conversation turned to wine cellars... I started with a basement room with foundation walls, concrete floor and six sides - the space is the foundation under the bay window in our dining room on the floor above. It took WAY too long to frame the walls to match the not-quite-true foundation walls. I'm pretty happy with the final room, though. Other than installing the butcherblock countertop and a piece of stained glass over the window it's done. SVonhof 04-11-07, 10:02 AM Jason, 1.5" x 1.5" strips of cedar? Why 1.5" may I ask? The style racking that drin used is perfect for wine storage and Wine Enthusiast magazine does their installs with similar designed racks (choice of wood). My wife and I are still thinking that someday, we will use part of our third car garage for a wine cellar, but because of our layout, we will have to get a cooling system that works by venting outside the house, which is much more expensive than the ones that vent into a nearby room. I would be fine building all the racks, doing the floors and walls and such, but the cooling is a different thing. jikkjack 04-11-07, 10:09 AM Scott - I found S4S cedar boards that the wife likes... The height is 1.5". The board is like 12" wide so I am planning to rip it down with the table saw and to keep it consistent, I will rip it to 1.5". drin 04-11-07, 10:14 AM Did you DIY build or buy that slat wine rack? I bought all my racking Jason. It wasn't worth the effort it would have taken to DIY it. It came from Wine Racks America (http://www.wineracksamerica.com). Great service, friendly people, good pricing. I searched for about three months before buying and their prices were very good. -drin SVonhof 04-11-07, 09:33 PM You would get a lot more out of the wood if you cut it in smaller peices. No reason to make it that thick for things like this, when you know that smaller will do fine. Just my opinion. If you want to make sure, find a local store or restaurant that will let you take a good look at their wine rack and see for yourself. If done right, you are going way overkill. jikkjack 04-12-07, 07:33 AM Scott - I went to a wine store and took a picture of their rack up close. I agree with you for the wood pieces that hold the bottles...I should have been more clear that I was talking about the frame. Although maybe you have convinced me to go with 1.5" x 1" for the frame now and maybe 3/4" x 3/4" for the shelf pieces. Here is a camera phone pic of what I want the rack to look like. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/ATT658198.jpg SVonhof 04-12-07, 08:54 PM So, even with that blurry camera-phone pic (it's great to have a camera in a phone these days!) it looks like you were right next to the Elise wine... :) I am sure you realize that I am just trying to help you get the wood to go further and cost less. BTW, since you will be making a LOT of repetitious cuts with the table saw and others, make sure you don't let your guard down even for a second. My mom does lots of woodworking and was doing that and ended up with multiple surgeries to rebuild a few knuckles... Wasn't good. But she does have about 95% use back in her fingers, bib props to the surgeons they called in for that one! jikkjack 04-13-07, 08:04 AM Elyse Cabernet is great. Yikes...glad to hear she is ok. SVonhof 04-14-07, 02:01 PM Ah, you corrected my spelling on the Elyse. I have a bottle that we finished off in my kitchen above the cabinets (we display some of the really good wines we have had) along with Silver Oak 1997 Napa Valley, 1997 Far Niente, 1999 Whitehall Lane Reserve and others I can't think of right now. BTW, what are you going to use for a cooling unit? chapeau 04-15-07, 08:16 AM JikkJack, Just lurking. Nice project. Great results. I thought you may be interested in this link for a 162 bottle wine rack. Sorry, you'll have to google "dizzy wine cabinet" as I can't post URLs. This guy does great work and seems very good at DIY stuff. Even he found 1400 cuts a bit daunting!. Cutting up 100 BF is a lot of effort...judging by your other work, I am sure that in the end you would be proud of the final product!! How long to you plan to store your wine? After excessive temperature variations, the next worse thing for a bottle of wine in storage is vibration. If your HT sub can rattle your wine then you may want to consider isolating your racks somehow or building/using a dense material, for eample, concrete. Search for "vinis pierre". Good luck on your design! jikkjack 04-15-07, 11:03 AM Scott. Don't know yet. I have to look into the units. I am planning to cut the unit in underneath the stairs on the right wall of the cellar. I appreciate that very much. I have indeed made more progress... I have been working on a wine rack for the small area to the left of the basement stairs. There is an old picture of that area above in post #456 (http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?p=10304097&&#post10304097) . I spent a lot of time trying to reverse engineer some wine racks I found online to figure out spacing and have finally started cutting all of the cedar strips and putting the rack together. My rack is going to be 34 11/16" wide, 13 3/8" deep, and 69 11/16" high and made from cedar wood. I will post a picture of my design today. Should hold around 128 bottles. I am still waiting for chairs to show up and having a hard time getting in touch with the person getting them for me. :( If I don't hear anything this week, I will most likely buy them from Roman here on AVS. In the meantime, I just keep plugging along on other parts of the basement. Granite tile is going to be in this weekend and I may have a chance to put it in, but I have a busy schedule. I have to stain and seal my deck which will take a very long time. jikkjack 04-30-07, 11:17 AM Ok - Here is a very crude picture of the main rack. I will add lots of decorative wood trim (arches) wall mounted side bottle holders and demo shelves. I bought a lot of cedar wood to construct the entire set-up. Lots of table saw time but it is a breeze with the new diablo blade. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/winerack.jpg I will post some real pictures of the progress later tonight or tomorrow morning. :) BritInVA 04-30-07, 12:18 PM Just mind those fingers. Cheers, Mark jikkjack 04-30-07, 10:19 PM Got all of the wood cut tonight and that was a big task. Still have all my fingers thanks to Mark's post. When he posted that, I made sure to be extra careful so not to have to explain myself to him after a post like that... :D Started putting together another ladder and just finished up for the evening. Here is what it looks like as of right now. Early infancy. Please ignore the messy workshop. I haven't finished the room yet...too many other projects. :D http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC185.jpg Here is a shot of the 10th rung up (blue tape) where I will cap the rows and add the bottom of the X pattern. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC186.jpg jikkjack 04-30-07, 10:22 PM And of course, I had to test it out to make sure a standard size bottle will fit... http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC183.jpg Looks like a winner to me with plenty of room for larger size bottles if necessary. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC184.jpg I will continue work on the rack tomorrow after work. I hope to complete at least 2 ladders tomorrow night. They take forever to put together with all of the measuring and leveling... SVonhof 05-01-07, 09:18 AM Once you get the first one level, can't you just use a spacer to get the next height set and nail or staple away? That is normally what I do when making things like this. Concentrate on the height and levelness of shelf or rack #1 and then use the same spacer for the next space up, then remove and use again... Would that help? swithey 05-01-07, 11:20 AM http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC185.jpg That looks like a lot of cutt'n, glue'n and nail'n  Great job! I'm planning to build a small wet bar area off my HT but the wife wants cabinets vs. exposed shelves. However, a cool "X" wine rack in the middle may add a nice accent. Hmm .. wonder if the IB sub will rattle the bottles on intense LFE scenes  BritInVA 05-01-07, 12:06 PM Nice Rack :D Glad to hear that there were no mishaps - blood does tend to ruin a good bit of timber  Check your PM - I may be in Atlanta next week :D Cheers, Mark SVonhof 05-01-07, 08:48 PM BTW, Jason, I just thought of this. How about if you took one piece of wood as wide as the two pieces that are nailed next to each other including the blank area in-between the two and dado the end out as wide as the front and back piece? That would allow you to drive one nail through the front piece into the support for both sides of the vertical in one shot. Do that front and back and it would hold nicely, and would be lots less cutting (assuming it's not already done) and would get done faster... If you don't know what I mean, reply here and I will make an easy to understand 3d model showing what I mean tomorrow at work (don't have the software here at home). jikkjack 05-01-07, 09:33 PM Once you get the first one level, can't you just use a spacer to get the next height set and nail or staple away? Would that help? Yeah - that would have made it easier...oh well. I have a pattern board that I am using but now that you mention it, a jig would have been smarter. :o jikkjack 05-01-07, 09:36 PM That looks like a lot of cutt'n, glue'n and nail'n  Great job! Hmm .. wonder if the IB sub will rattle the bottles on intense LFE scenes  Yes, yes and yes. Thanks Steve! Someone posted in my thead earlier that storing wine exposed to vibration (ie subwoofer) could make it spoil faster. We won't have that problem at my place but I should pass along that info. I agree that the X factor is always cooler. :D jikkjack 05-01-07, 09:37 PM Nice Rack :D Glad to hear that there were no mishaps - blood does tend to ruin a good bit of timber  Check your PM - I may be in Atlanta next week :D Cheers, Mark Thanks Mark. Will do. I was out of the office in a training class today for the job with no access to the forum so I am having to catch up tonight. jikkjack 05-01-07, 09:44 PM BTW, Jason, I just thought of this. That is a great idea and I wish I had thought of that...oh well - I am over 50% done now so I can't change it up at this point but man that is a great idea! jikkjack 05-06-07, 10:11 PM Finished up the main part of the new wine rack. I have a lot more to do in this room but this is the major part of the rack design. Next, I will frame out the existing soffit and turn that into an arch area made from cedar strips and take it back to the rack. I will post an updated sketch tomorrow of the next step. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC189.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC190.jpg http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC191.jpg Yeah - the rack is leaning a little bit to the right for now, but once I fasten it to the back wall - it will fix that and put the whole thing into line. :) I am planning to put a tile stone on the back wall floor to ceiling that will be visible through the rack and we will be painting the wine cellar a different color. I will also begin looking for a new light for this room too with the wife. swithey 05-06-07, 10:24 PM Awesome job Jason! Talk about a lot of work. Love it :) Zinema 05-07-07, 04:15 AM Excellent work Jason! I guess you need a short break now from cutting & nailing... :D BritInVA 05-07-07, 08:29 AM That must have been quite a monotonous task building that but the outcome looks stunning. Great Job. Mark BIGmouthinDC 05-07-07, 08:37 AM That must have been quite a monotonous task Mark Actually picking the grapes would be a monotonous task. Jason, great job. jikkjack 05-07-07, 08:43 AM Awesome job Jason! Talk about a lot of work. Love it :) Thanks Steve. It was a fun project. First wine rack I've built so I learned a lot and would do a few things differently next time...but happy with the results none the less. jikkjack 05-07-07, 08:49 AM Thanks guys. It is not done by a long shot. Next, I will add a soap stone tile behind the rack, then build an arch out of the same cedar with 2" slats for the arch. Here is a rough mock-up of the design from sketch-up. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/winecellararch.jpg jikkjack 05-07-07, 03:15 PM Talked to Ben last night and the Berks should be here in a few weeks. I got the blue LED lit cup holders on the berks for cool factor and if it gets old, I will just unplug them. So when you put a drink in the cup holder it will actually light up and turn off when the cup is not in it. :D Theater Seats Update So I have an update on my seats and it is that there is no update. :( I have been trying to get in touch with Ben Harper (the guy that was going to get me my seats) but I can't get in contact with him. It has been 3 months on May 12th and nothing...so I am going to order my Berks soon from Roman at Ultimate Home Entertainment. I have been in touch with Roman to get some pricing and he has very good prices. Man - I can't wait to get the chairs!!! I have been waiting forever. I just need to figure out my electrical situation first. BIGmouthinDC 05-07-07, 04:00 PM Theater Seats Update I have been trying to get in touch with Ben Harper I did a quick look and he last posted here on Jan 28 and nothing since then. Let's hope that he his OK. If you are still getting those lighted cup holders I'd like a review and pics. NeoOiler 05-07-07, 04:22 PM Hi JikkJack, I have asked a question on the first page but Ill ask you as well since your stage looks similar to mine. When you built your screen wall is it fastened to the stage/walls and ceiling?? Thanks RYan dc_pilgrim 05-07-07, 05:25 PM Bears repeating: Nice Rack :D jikkjack 05-07-07, 09:47 PM I did a quick look and he last posted here on Jan 28 and nothing since then. You will see in the upper right hand corner that his Last Activity: 04-27-07 11:09 PM. He actually posted on 05/18/2007 too... jikkjack 05-07-07, 09:48 PM Hi JikkJack, I have asked a question on the first page but Ill ask you as well since your stage looks similar to mine. When you built your screen wall is it fastened to the stage/walls and ceiling?? Thanks RYan Hey Ryan. Yes - and I used rubber grommets to isolate it as best as possible from the stage, wall and ceiling. jikkjack 05-07-07, 09:49 PM Thanks Dave! BritInVA 05-10-07, 11:46 PM Had the pleasure of visiting Jasons HT tonight. Was great to meet Jason and his wife - and Bud made a surprise visit. As usual the pictures do not do his HT justice. The quality of the build and sound is outstanding. Was suprised at the air movement felt during some of the LFE demo's. Jason didn't have 'The Pulse' which was awesome at Steve (Switheys) on his IB setup - but I must save WOTW and some others had significant air movement that shook my chest similar to what I felt at Steves  . Seeing as we have the same Sub and similar room sizes I see there is room for improvement in my LFE - so need to tweak. Also got oppertunity to see BlueRay - I must say the picture was impressive. Thanks again to you and your wife for allowing me into your home and your hospitality. Hope one day you make it to NoVA. Cheers, Mark Zinema 05-11-07, 02:53 AM Mark, that sounds like a fun evening! This is always the problem with pictures (unless you are a pro photographer with the right equipment) - they will never do the room justice, got to see it live and in motion! It's a real pity you guys live 12 flight hours away.... :( PS: still waiting for a PM...get some serious work started on the LFE front...you want it! :D jikkjack 05-11-07, 07:47 AM Thanks Mark - It was a blast! Glad you could come over and hang out! Hopefully next time you are in town I will have the chairs and we can kick back and watch a movie and drink beers. It was a pleasure to meet you and we will be up in NoVA soon to see you guys. Mike - I have friends in Austria so maybe I will get to visit your theater...I just need to get in touch with my friend Jim. jikkjack 06-14-07, 09:09 AM Wow. It has been a while since I posted so I thought I would just add a quick update to this thread in case anyone was wondering what I was doing or *not doing* because the pool opened up. ;) First - a great update to report - I should be getting my chairs for the room the first or second week of July. :D :D :D I really enjoyed working with Roman from rtheaters.com. He was excellent with his communication, help and keeping me updated on the status of my order. I highly recommend him for anyone needing home theater gear! Second update - the wine cellar will be completed by next weekend. Third update - interesting new project that I am working on. I have decided to transform the door into my theater into a ticket booth. Here is an old picture of the door: http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC76.jpg The current door is painted white and looks bad when it is opened into the theater which is all black and stained wood. So to fix that, I am planning to paint the door black, and build a faux booth on it and stain to match the theater wood. Here is the inspiration photo of what I want the booth to look like when it is done. http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/ticketbooth.jpg This should be a neat project and will make for a cool effect of hidden door! :D swithey 06-14-07, 09:14 AM I love the ticket booth "hidden door" idea. I'm looking forward to seeing the progress. chinadog 06-18-07, 03:13 PM Don't forget the mannequin head... you could definitely fit one in there. Bud jikkjack 07-25-07, 10:03 PM Finally got the theater chairs! After waiting, issues and more issues...they are finally in. I took a quick picture after installation but have some work to do before posting final images of the theater. 99.9% completed now. :D http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Royal%20Fortune/DSC192.jpg mbgonzomd 07-25-07, 10:08 PM Very nice. What seats did you end up getting? Any more work on the wine cellar? swithey 07-25-07, 11:58 PM Jason, Seats look great. Do you have a shot from the front of the room? |
