Oh sure... now it's done!

Seriously, good job, and good documentation. Time to play something loud! :)

Thanks Warren. Yeah - sorry it was not done when you came over but hey - now you have an excuse to stop by if you are around ATL again! :)

I think the new Transformers will fit the bill for something loud.

Absolutely Awesome Job on the Horizontal masking Jason :) That Video says it ALL!!..

Just wondering Jase, Did you use the Guides at the Side like in my Sketch-up ?, so the Masking tracks straight and close to the Screen ...

Cheers mate....

Thanks Cinema Mad. I used an aluminum U track down the left/right side with a guide block. I think if I were doing it over - I would use something like your design shows because that is a great idea. I have lots of ideas for how to improve this system and plan on uploading a few more detailed pics today of the final system.

Would love to see some pics of the way you fitted the masking system over you screen & your U track system if not to much trouble..

Also interested to know, if you were to do it over would you stick with the Somfy LT30 or go up to the somfy 50 (ir) as I am seriously looking at the somfy 50, Mainly because I am sure this is the motor(s) Carada uses in there Masquerade Horizontal & vertical masking system...

Cheers....

Thanks guys! I have decided that I will put together a detailed DIY horizontal masking guide for everyone similar to the candy counter. I was just going to snap some more pics but feel like some images need more discussion so...look for that coming soon (meaning at the latest by the end of the week).

kjlewie-it is right on top of the Carada border which sits off the screen 1". It slides on some slick plastic pads (I will have a picture of that in the construction plans for retro fit masking systems).

Cinema - I would probably go with the 50 because Ken told me it is quieter and more powerful. Honestly - the 30 is not too loud but at any rate I would opt for the 50.

Anyone have any recommendations for a movie that uses 1:85:1?? War of the worlds says it is but for some reason it plays in 1:73:1. I want to program the My position on the somfy motor for 1:85:1 and can't seem to find any movies in that format off hand.

What was the total investment in $$ to make it happen? Time?

Dave - I think I have around 300 in it. 1/10th cost of professional system.

160 somfy motor w/ir and power supply.
50 somfy coil spring, brackets and IR remote
80 aluminum rollers and bars
40 black velvet
wood/screws/flange bearings/etc 20

Time - 8 hours just masking system. Screenwall rebuild - 16 hours because I had to build new fabric wrapped panels and trial and error with masking and screenwall.

I am making a small change to the masking side design. I originally used wooden blocks traveling inside an aluminum C channel to keep the masks straight in front of the screen. Last night I cut a small block of wood and added 2 - 1.5" rubber casters to it to make a wheel base that will travel up and down the track. I think it will work better than the wooden block and travel easier. Admittedly this is just tinkering...but I feel it is a better solution than the wooden travel blocks. Pictures tomorrow when I have it all put together.

Thanks John :)

Check out ScottJ0007's build for side masking. I think he nailed it but used a different motor/limit switches design to automate.http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=941076

If I build side masking - I will emulate his design but use Somfy motors, coils springs, ribbon spools and ribbon cable instead.

$300 is a steal. I read the other DIY masking thread over in the 2.35 section, but it seemed like the motor had so much complexity to it. Grabbing something pre-built is much more to my liking. Kudos.

Hey Anthony. Yes - Jog works successfully. I am not able to get the my position set - but not because of the somfy motor - rather the PS3 or Panny Projector seems to take a 1:85:1 Aspect ratio movies and converts it to 16x9.

This is ok - I guess - but seems strange. Anyhow - jog up and jog down are about a 1" move at a time. I don't know if I will use this much but I programmed it into my universal remote just in case. :)

Still working on the how to guide but have been busy recently.

So - I just built a new Home Theater PC and it does not fit on my audio pier...so instead of buying a new pre-made unit...I am building my own. :D

Here is the Sketch-up file of my design. I have cut the sides, top and bottom but can't finish the shelves until it stops raining. I am going to put this on low profile swivel casters and have a custom wire management track on the back.

Jason,

First off, I read your entire thread (took a while) - awesome job on the whole project! What an accomplishment.

I am starting on my own "home theater" (not sure it classifies as a "home theater" based on most of them on this site!) and have decided on a bar behind the second row of seats similar to what you did. I love the simplicity and elegant design you did.

Is there any way you can provide some detailed information on how you constructed your bar? Specifically the top. I see the pictures of the framing, but what exactly goes on top? I presume you put plywood, them maybe a concrete back board, trimmed out in wood, and tiled in the center? How does all that go together - like fastening the trip to the backer board (or however it is put together)? How did you make sure the trim and tile ended up flush in the end.

Thanks for any help you can provide,

Phillip

01-05-10, 10:27 AM
Hey Phillip,

Thanks man. Congratulations on starting up your home theater project. It is a fun and rewarding undertaking.

I have some more pics at home (I think) detailing the actual individual steps but I basically added a 3/4" piece of plywood first. Then I Added the oak side rails to the top of the plywood with a little overhang of about 1" all the way around. This was so I could add a decorative piece of trim to the edge of the plywood. Next, I added the hardy plank backer board with numerous drywall screws to fix it to the plywood. Stain and sanded the oak trim and finally added in the 12" tiles. I think I put down 2 layers of backer board to make sure the tiles leveled out with the oak trim.

That's it!

Found some pre-moisted wipes specifically made for granite at a furniture store. I quick swipe with them keeps the bar looking fresh n' shiny.

Jason,

How about some dimensions for that new rack? Height/width/depth. I like your design. When I built mine I think I made it too wide (at least for the closet it's in). I also find the adjustable shelves a waste, fixed would have been fine.

jikkjack
01-07-10, 02:56 PM
Thanks Ed,

Height is 78.5" without the casters.
Width is 23"
Depth is 23"

I agree that adjustable shelves are a waste. I know what is going where and don't see that changing anytime in the next few years. If it does change - I will build a new tower. :D

Not yet. I should get it sometime early next week. I have an Insteon Lamp Linc module that I am going to use to link to the on/off master switch. The good news is that it can be controlled via Remote Control and other Insteon switches and dim levels can be programmed/linked as well.

Im hoping to finish my wall panels this weekend and as part of that finish the rope light install behind my screen. I only have about an 8 portion of rope light left over so I am installing it behind my screen to add to the effect of lighting my speakers up behind the screen. I to am using one of the Insteon lampmodules with an X10 IR543 for easy IR control.

Eventually when I do the marquee and lighted poster boxes I plan to use Insteon switches or outlet modules to control those. Neat stuff.

Are you on Comcast? Is you cable box a DVR? If so, swap that puppy out for a new Moto DCX3400. They are black, quiet, don't generate as much heat, and have larger disk drives (250 & 320 GB drives have been reported in Atlanta).

The Moto DCX 3200 is the non DVR variant but I do not know if Comcast has that box available in Georgia yet.

More info please! :-)

I'm moving to digital storage as well. Right now I'm playing my BD rips via a PCH-A200 from my Win7 machine. That was just for proof of concept though. I'll be building an unRaid machine soon.

So, what are you playing the movies with? What are you using for a server? What is that interface you're using?

these days when you say database, wouldn't adding digital be a bit redundant? :p

place looks great! love the wine rack and screen masking

btw, looks like your using .net?
might want to take a look at some of the projects out in google code, this once is in c# and open source...still pretty active

I built an HTPC/Gaming Rig with hot swap terabyte drives in the front.
http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r287/jikkjack/Movie%20Database/HTPC.jpg

The PC has the following Specs:
Zalman HTPC case
AMD Phenom II X4
4 GB ddr3 ram
plextor blu-ray drive
3 western digital TB drives
2 sapphire radeon 5770 cards in crossfire
windows 7

I have everything mapped to my URC controller and it can be launched from windows media center or IMON.

I am using this with CyberLink PowerDVD10Ultra and a slysoft clone drive.

Been a while since I posted but thought I would put in an update to keep my thread from dying. I retired my old MAME arcade machine and replaced it with a custom built Golden Tee Pedestal. I am now waiting on the 2011 kit to show up.

I hope it will be here next week. Half-time will be a whole lot more fun now!!

Here's a bump from a noob to help you keep the thread alive for a while longer. Just came across your thread and read it all. LOVE the build. I am here in metro ATL as well and have a very similar room layout size-wise, although mine is a few feet shorter than yours. Been struggling with a color scheme, and I really like the black and tan. Come to think of it, I like a black and tan beer every now and then as well so I should have thought of it earlier. Anyway, I digress. Just wanted to send kudos your direction for a very inspiring thread.

Thanks justaguyinga. If you are in Marietta area I might have some free time to help you out with your build.

Thanks Mark - yes you do need to get back down here soon. I did finish it and here are some shots:

Looks cool.

So is that something you buy and assemble or did you make yourself?

jikkjack

tbraden32 - about 4k if you buy a fully assembled cab. I built the cab myself and only have about 2500.00 in it with the TV, Kit, and DIY cab. Here is the build thread from an arcade forum if you are interested. Mark - I know you will like this:

Nice documented build as usual.

I still need to get on with my MAME project. Leaning to a portable table version. Need to look at that Arcade forum for ideas.

Appreciate the offer. I live in Lilburn which is about 30 minutes from Marietta. Yours and Bud's builds have already been a tremendous help and source of inspiration. If you and Bud or anyone else from ATL get together again anytime, keep me in mind. Now that the holidays are over I am back full steam to finish the Corkstreet Hill theater. If you get the chance sometime check out the build thread.

Jason,
What a fun read. Just spent the past few days going through your thread in my spare time. I'm over in Sandy Springs, so it was nice to see how you did things, and also find out about availability for stuff in Atlanta. I plan on starting my theater sometime later this year, so I'm 100% in planning mode. Gotta get the financial committee to agree to let me proceed before any actual work starts. She did let me build a wine cellar though, which I just finished up!

Have been trying to learn sketch up and just getting my head wrapped around all I want to do down there. Considering it took me 4 months to build the wine cellar, I'd guess the basement should take me, ohhh, friggin' FOREVER! ;-) OCD is my enemy...

Need to take some finished pics.. these don't have the base or crown. I didn't build the racks (like some other enterprising fellas), but I did build the cabinets below, as well as everything else about the room.

That looks fantastic! I wish I had more space for a bigger wine cellar and I just noticed that I never posted my final pics. I will try to do that this weekend. My biggest problem is keeping it stocked. :-)

I used to have a home theater business with Bud (chinadog) and we did a lot of theaters around GA. If you have any questions - ask away. I am working with a local aluminum fabricator in Marietta and might have a kit Masking System available soon. Still working out the details.

Thanks! It was a tough build for me as every dollar I sunk into the cellar meant I couldn't buy that much wine. It was certainly an experience along the way, with my original rack manufacturer going out of business after they took my money for racks! Thank God for chargebacks... My cellar took a big hit over the holidays, THEN we were locked up in the house during the ice storm, so it took another hit. I was able to leave the house on the Tuesday after the storm, but my wife was home for the entire week, till Sunday! At some point you will start accumulating more than you drink!

That's pretty cool y'all actually started up a business together. I read that Bud moved away in another Georgia thread. I'll definitely be doing the work myself, as I'm insanely handy around the house. That, and my workshop is begging for the next project (which will more than likely be an outdoor kitchen on my deck)...

The masking kit sounds interesting. I'm thinking I'm going to do CIH and use the somfy motors as well.

Haven't moved away quite yet, my commute is just a little longer for the next few months! ;)

Ha ha. You can hire me to come work up there once you get established! I am ready to build theater version 2.0. This time without a shoestring budget.

Great job on the wine cellar. Where the hell were you guys when I lived in Atlanta?!!? :)

Anyways, how big is your cellar? We drink a ton of wine and have been thinking about adding a cellar of some sort down the road to our next house. I'm guessing you could work one in a fairly small space?

Thanks. It's about 1000 individual and about 300 case (along the bottom). Not quite there yet, but I certainly got to a point somewhere along the line where I was buying more than I was drinking... :D

Uploaded a video of the "mostly" finished version. Still need to hook up the condensate pump and build the doors for the cabinets at the bottom. Of course I shot it on my phone and should have turned the phone sideways. Oh well.

Sorry, I was posting the video from before since the pics weren't of the completed version. Cellar is ~9'x5.5'

In my previous house my cellar was entirely under some stairs, and I could fit about 450 bottles in there.

Wine cellar looks awesome. Still trying to figure out if I can fit one in my build somewhere. Looking forward to seeing your build thread as well.
