drop the problematic iso into VLC and see if it plays.

If it does, I'm out of ideas.

If it does not, re-rip ISO.

Slack, thanks for the info on exif. I found that I can edit exif tags with Photoshop Elements so that they view correctly.

I'm going to experiment with the camera to see if I can the orientation correct before downloading the photos.

Laststarfighter - I upgraded by getting the Evolution dash up on the Xbox and FTPing into it. I then renamed the XBMC directory on the XBOX and FTP'd the new version over. Then I copied the USERDATA directory from the old version to the new so that I didn't lose my setup.

Getting it to boot into Evolution was the biggest headache as I had set XBMC as the default app - I just had to remember where I had put the old default.xbe.

Thought I'd post what I've found re streaming movies to the XBMC at a location where there is no ethernet cable available:

Have tried wireless G for streaming vob files but get consistent stuttering as the xbox is caching even though the wireless is rated up to 58mbs, but have now tried the Netgear model XE104 85 mbps wall-plugged Ethernet switches which use the in-house electrical wiring/outlets to distribute the lan and they work great!

It takes a bit longer to open/start a movie, but the streaming works fine (did find out that its best if the outlets the Netgear switches are plugged into are fed from the same circuit breaker panel -- the outlets do not have to be on the same circuit breaker, however -- also the server ethernet connection should be directly to the router (not through a downline switch) and the router should also connect directly to the distributing Netgear wall switch).

Finally there's a way to locate the XBMC in areas without ethernet cable access! :)

This ought to be simple, just boot into the original Xbox dash, select Static IP, plug in a valid address and the DNS addresses, then it should work fine.

But it doesn't seem to work with the DNS addresses used by my ISP - Verizon.net.

I can still FTP into it but it can' t get out to the net, specifically to the weather server.

I would like a static IP so that I don't have to check it all the time when using FTP.

Any ideas anyone?

can you just rename the old xbmc folder "xbmc old" and clear the cache then ftp the new build of xbmc?

I'm using the latest build and have been getting lots of crashes, I'll have to re-upgrade my build to see if it works better.

I'm really liking mayhem III, though I see some skins will need to be updated(2.0?) to work with this build.

another problem, I can't seem to find a "play all" or "play all random" for my music
I'm still getting used to xbmc, but having fun:) I'm glad I modded it, tons of potential

edit:
well after searching and playing, I found it(after switching to the controller :( ), have to scan the collection, then switch views, then check party mode...surprised I didn't have to pat my head and rub my tummy

All you need to do for random play of all your music is to make sure the shuffle option is set, and then go to the top level of your music directory and click "0" on the remote (default mapping). I don't use the library views at all in XBMC since i organize my music pretty well and all files are named the way i like.

For example in the top level of my music folder i have "CD's" and "MP3's". Depending on which i want to shuffle i just highlight that directory and click "0".

Nice find. I had a similar problem streaming xvid and DVD iso's through 54G. This is when i had Linksys products. I then switched over to Buffalo routers/bridges and i've never had a problem streaming video from my computer to the xbox.

does anyone know of a better solution for renaming files that the xbox will like?
XboxIfy is not a simple solution(needs python running on a pc)

I'm still getting the odd crash, not a big deal, just a pain to have to get up and reboot.
xbmc = highly recommended

Regarding files that the xbox will like: since it seems to be having problems with accessing Shoutcast web radio stations (apparently due to problems/changes with the Shoutcast web site), I have set up to directly access desired stations through bookmarks in My Music.

To access and play individual asx web addresses and other addresses that will activate windows media player when placed in explorer: paste the asx file into a notepad page and then save the page as a “strm” , naming the saved strm file whatever you want (under “save as”, select save as type “all files” and type .strm at the end of the title to save it as a stream file).

I’ve done this for both web tv addresses and web radio addresses – seems to work for any web address that ends in a coding which activates windows media player. For the music radio addresses, placed the individual strm files into a folder named webradiostations and fxp’d the folder into the hardrive in E:\apps\XBMC folder and created a bookmark in the <music> section of the userdata sources.xml to access the strm files:

<bookmark>
<name>Web Radio Stations</name>
<path>E:\apps\XBMC\webradiostations\</path>
</bookmark>

This makes it easy to directly access any favorite web radio station or video streaming without having to go through scripts. You can set up separate folders in the webradiostations folder named for each country, place the strm files in the appropriate country folder along with a jpg of a flag for that country with the jpg named “folder.jpg”. Then when accessing the webradiostations, the name of each country and its flag thumbnail will appear. (the same thing can be done for web TV stations with a bookmark in My Videos)

When playing an audio or video internet site on a PC with Windows Media Player, whatever address that is being accessed can be determined and copied to paste to a notepad page by right-clicking on the “Now Playing” tab at the upper left and selecting “File” and “properties”. Then just copy the “Location:” address and paste to the notepad page.

A great website to get the direct addresses for XBMC of web radio stations, TV stations, and even POLICE SCANNERS on the web is surfmusic dot de (cannot post the exact address since haven't made 5 posts yet!). Choose a country for music and once clicking on “Listen Live” it brings up their player page – then click on “Stand alone Player” to play it in windows media player and be able to access the direct web address. The stations with the higher kps bitrate – esp 128 kps – provide the best quality.

The above enables accessing web radio and tv without having to use scripts, which often lock up the xbox , but lately it seems the XBMC can take a LONG time to download into a web radio or tv site! Hope this provides some things to have fun with! :)

SMB works well....

Generally if you access a URL as SMB://

It will list the workgroups it finds and then the machines.

SMB://machinename

should also work.

If for some reason name resolution is not working

you can try

smb://IP_ADDRESS

Are you sure sharing with guest access is turned on your PC

if your PC running netbios over TCP/IP

All these things are controlled in userdata\sources.xml

as for cover art XBMC displays coverart embedded in the MP3, etc file
it will also display a folder.jpg or folder.png placed in an album directory.

Unfortunately if you did not add cover art when ripping through the many programs that automatically do this for you. (MusicMatc, Yahoo Music Engine, DbPowerAmp, etc) then I know of now way in XBMC or PC otherwise to do this in a batch mode.

There are many PC programs to add cover art but I have yet to find one that will do so in a batch mode.

FYI...

Just finished transforming all my shortens to FLAC and tagging them all. About 5000 files total. Would have never been able to do this without dbPowerAMP for the conversion and Tag&Rename for the tagging. It took dbPowerAmp the better part of a day to convert all these files but the batch processing made that part the painless part. Tagging took a while but tag&rename has a lot of useful features to help along the way!....

now everything in my music collection is tagged and can be accessed via the library view....

I can only get SmartFTP to work if I click the PASV button on the toolbar. I can't remember if that is turning it on or off but it's one of the two. :)

The only FTP client I've never had a problem with when transferring to the Xbox is FlashFXP. It also works perfect without changing any of the default settings.

Alright, I think I got everything ordered to get me setup to do this xbox media server. I ordered a xbox with the x3 chip, XBMC installed, Evox, and some other software. I got a few questions as I have been reading some of the post at xbox-scene and am a little confused.
1. How are you guys getting software onto the xbox?
2. I want to make XBMC my dashboard and all the ways I have read to do it sound pretty complicated.
3. What are you guys using to rip your DVD's, I have Nero and a couple other programs to do this, how are you ripping them, ISO's?
4. What versions of XBMC are you using? Pimped?
5. Basically I want to be able to turn on the xbox and have it ready to play movies, MP3's, and games(emulators ect.) I would like this to be wife and inlaw friendly so they can keep the kids happy. I will be controlling all of this with my Harmony 880.
6. I have a home network set up, both wired and wireless.

I am just trying to get everything together so when it arrives this week I will be ready to go. I am going to start ripping the DVD's and want to make sure however I rip them they will easily play. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have just transferred my MP3 files using "MP3 FAT-X Renamer" and I have to say whet a fantastic piece of software as it has it's own FTP client and renames the MP3's to a FATX compliant filename on the fly and leaves the original file names unchanged. It transferred 48Gb of MP3's in 2.5 hours, now all I need is similar software fore video files

chrsb,

1. I use FileZilla FTP program usually to the E/Apps folder.

2. Not complicated at all depending on the version.
I use the 6-18-06 T3CH XBMC build and with it there is a folder named _tools. In the _tools folder, find the file named "SHORTCUT by TEAM UIX.xbe" and rename it "default.xbe". Then ftp it (overwriting the existing default.xbe) into the E:/Dashboard folder and reboot (I would think the latest versions of T3CH would work the same but can't say for sure).

Note: Before doing this download your E:/Dashboard folder to your PC. If you run into any trouble you'll be able upload it back onto your xbox and be back where you started.

3. ISO's. I use whatever works, such as DVD Decrypter, DVD Shrink or Nero.

4. see #2

5. I use the MCE remote and this set up is very family-friendly. The key is getting it to boot to XBMC and editing your XboxMediaCenter.xml file so when they select, for example, "Videos" it only shows the locations of your iso's. You can even go a step further if you have the iso's spread out over the network. Edit the .xml file correctly and you can have them appear to be in one location. It's not too difficult to do. As always make sure you back up the original .xml before making any changes.

6. I use and recommend a wired connection. Some have had luck with a particular brand (can't remember) of home plug type connections. Personally, I'd stay away from wireless for this application.

Best of luck. It's worth the effort and offers more than you'll probably ever use...

I don't know if I can ask this here, but where do you get the T3CH build from? I tried a search and could not find it. I found the pimped version tracker but am leary of P2P programs and torrents. I will look around some more and see if I can find it. My overall goal of this is to make it easy for my mom to turn this stuff on so when she is wathing the kids she can turn on all of their movies and keep them occupied. The last time the wife and me went out we came home to a TV turned off (she could not figure out how to do anything) and upset babies.

Some comments on setting this up...

1. I use SmartFTP - a little quirky but it's free. Most any FTP client will work. Playing with netdrive right nowtoo.
2. I've used a Default.xbe in the rootof C: that looks at a .ini file for it's redirection - which in my case is to XBMC.
3. I use video and audio "folders". It looks just like you've opened up the DVD to read it rather than a solitary ISO. Not sure it matters to be honest. I use Slysoft AnyDVD with DVDShrink. I shrink menus and delete alternate languages etc. but do NOT shrink the movie. I'm currently awaiting two additional 400Gig drives for my array sothat I can begin ripping more DVD - they eat up space FAST
4. yeah see #2 :D
5. I bought a cheap junk Microsoft clone remote off EBAY - mostly for the IRDA receiver. I've not yet really set it up with another remote but it does work on it's own fine. I have an IRDA mod to my box to allow remote turn-on and off from Xecutor but it's not yet setup. Naturally they released a USB programmable version the day after I ordered my serial one - grr! I also have an Xecutor LCD in the front panel and their switch setup plus USB ports. Overkill and not readable from a distance but oh well it's purty :P
6. Wired, for sure for me. It would be just my luck for a microwave to fire up in the middle of a movie and tick me off!

P.S. Oh yeah - the XML file. I don't edit it - instead I use a wireless Logitech XBOX controller and edit my sources. This is the controller I use most often and the white button on the right side can be used tobring up alternate menus etc. that allow you to add\delete\modify things like sources. Much easier than hand editing the XML! One issue I've run into - moving the Movie and MP3 database from release to release is a PITA. I always have at least two versions of XBMC on my system and getting the movies database and it's icons to "upgrade" into the next release is a pain. I'm having to re-add my movies eventhough I've copied files over about 30% of the time. Just something to be aware of before spending too much time setting it all up. And yeah I know you can have it do it itself autonomosly but it doesn't work out well for me because of a couple of movies I have and some series...

Pthh, use the Torrents! Pimped and BlingBling are easy to find and work WELL. Otherwise there's an FTP site available but you must jump through hoops on IRC to get in and if you want dodgy and painful THAT is certainly it. I only use that for when I cannot find something anyplace else...

Transfer? To where? So far as I know there's no limitation to file size of an ISO. Perhaps there's a limitation to file size on the XBOX file system though if that's where you're putting files. I use NTFS on my PC and ReiserFS on my array... Need more details....

just use caution when trying to get xbmc as the default dashboard, if it's not done right, your xbox won't boot and you can't ftp into it to fix things.
so do make sure you have a backup of your c drive.

btw.
I don't have an "E:/Dashboard" folder, was I supposed to make one?
I have "Apps, Cache, TData, UData" folders,
I deleted "games, HddLoader, Video" there was never a dashboard folder.

I believe he said he was using an Xecutor chip. Mine, an Xecutor3 CE, has a built-in FTP server. Even if my HD is blasted I can reformat it, move files, or do any number of things. This is an advantage of a chip vs a soft-mod, no pulling the drive etc. if you screw up and um yeah I've screwed up (lol). Also, if my drive cannot boot one file it will boot another in an order specified by the mod chip...

I did not have to make one with my mod. I used the Krayzie Ndure softmod with the Evox dash. The E:/Dashboard folder may have been a result of the mod I used. And now that I think about it, the way I described making XBMC the dash IS only for a softmod. Sorry for the confusion!

Yeah, I usually use the explorer to ftp to the xbox this way. If you have a username and password for the xbox ftp (as xbmc and some dashboards usually have), you would need to do ftp://username:password@ipaddress

It has been phased out and now all the bookmarks (otherwise known as sources) are stored under UserData/sources.xml and you no longer have to edit them by hand. All the editing can be done within the XBMC interface. Just go into the My Videos section, highlight a bookmark, click the white button on the gamepad or the title button on the remote and choose "Add Location". You can browse to whatever folder you want and add as many locations as you need.

ok, mine has a chip, but as far as I can tell, it can't ftp.
I was trying to make xbmc as the default dashboard but couldn't get it to boot after and had to pull the drive and restore the c partition....which is why I posted the caution.

and mp3-->fatx renamer removed all my "folder.jpg" from every folder and replaced them with "filename.tbn" I'm just glad it left my original files untouched. and as long as every folder that had artwork still does then I really don't care.

I also had a weird problem with one folder, both ftp programs could not delete it, I had to use "My Files" to delete it, well at least it's gone.

EBAY - they are all over EBAY and you get games, controllers, and other goodies with them. Even one that is "fragged" is often fine since it's usually a software issue on the HD. Cheap cheap - may buy one for a friend for a gift...

and mp3-->fatx renamer removed all my "folder.jpg" from every folder and replaced them with "filename.tbn" I'm just glad it left my original files untouched. and as long as every folder that had artwork still does then I really don't care.

on the other hand... only 9 songs failed to transfer

I also had a weird problem with one folder, both ftp programs could not delete it, I had to use "My Files" to delete it, well at least it's gone.

You could of popped in slayer's installation disc which has a built in dash that runs an ftp server and then fix HDD mess ups over ftp. That's how I ussually recover from my mistakes.

You are on a really old build if you still have an XboxMediaCenter.xml file.
Your right, I'm on a 6-18-06 build. They update XBMC so often and I have two boxes I am trying to keep identical that I finally decided I'd wait until they came out with version 2.0. It will be nice not having to edit the XboxMediaCenter.xml file anymore. I'm in awe at the time and talent that so many people have put into this. I just keeps getting better and better...

I have an MG-35 but plan to add another media player. If someone knows of any used Xboxes send me a PM. XBMC really looks like a nice GUI way to go.
Along with Ebay you can also check your local game stores (although you'll pay a little more). I purchased one used from Game Stop for 130.00 that turned out not to work. It was nice to be able to take it back and exchange it for another one. I would think any reputable ebay seller would offer a similar option.

The Game Stop by me has them for $109. I was going to go that route and do it myself but decided to buy on already moded. I paid $240 for mine with the X3 chip (iI got that so I could install the LCD if I wanted to with no soldering) it also will come with all the software already installed; emulators, dashes, XBMC(don't know what build) and some other goodies.

Now I am off to find all the rest of the software that I need to make my xbox look like the one on the first page of this thread!

Well I got my xbox and have it up and running! Here are a couple problems I ran into and thought I would share them.

1. My laptop for some reason would not FTP with the xbox wirelessly, my wired PC had no problem connecting to the xbox.
2. I tried all sorts of ways to make XBMC my dashboard and in the end the way that worked is the way they explain how to do it on the XBMC web site.
3. I am still working on getting my video files to look right, I have been ripping them as VOB's and am going to try iso to see if those work better with XBMC.

This thing has a learning curve to it and is frustrating, I think it is worth it in the end though.

yes there is a learning curve, I had expected that, I didn't expect to have to learn every part of it.
I haven't tried ripping my dvd collection yet, I'll need alot more storage for that and by then...
I hope there are better options for a media players.

Aw, come on guys, lol, it's not that big of a learning curv... I do admit that when I first got my box modded I was freaking out with every little thing I did. I soon found that the best way to get comfortable with it was to first take a look in the xboxmediacenter.xml file (now called the Sources.xml file) and see what made this thing tick. Ya know what, its very simple and self explanitory. Instructions and examples are even written in the xml file...

As for knowing all the functionality, it would be nice to have an illustrated instruction manual but hey, the developers are not the type to take the time to do such a thing. They would rather be spending time improving on XBMC. ;-)

I think you have taken the best first step in getting over the learning curve and that is coming to a forum like this and asking questions. Thats how most of us did it from the get go... Just make sure when you become experts to remember and pay it forward... :-)

I have to agree with Scotty. It takes a little bit of digging up front but once you understand the nature and flow of the .xml files you're good to go.

While the manual isn't perfect - it still works. And what you can't find in there you should be able to get the answer at the XBMC Forum or right here.

Ha!

Try fvcking around with an HTPC. Just attempting to get it to do what XBMC does.

Directshow filters - graphedit (switching subtitles or soundtracks on the fly)
USB UIRT - Eventghost (remote control)
SPD/IF DTS passthrough to your amp

I've been forced to start over on mine as BeyondTV4.4 trial does HDTV for **** (stuttering, and I have plenty o' horsepower. so I suspect it's due to all the filters I mucked around with before gettin an ATSC Tuner.). And I've given up finding a single 'front end' that can do it all like XBMC (holding out hope that the new TV engine on MediaPortal will be the one app to rule it all) and have resigned to the HTPC just doing OTA HDTV duty. But the money & time spent are effing unreal compared to one weekend 'geeking out' to get XBMC functionaly blowing everything else away.

I'm amost tempted to sell all the hardeware and get a settop HDTV tuner & just record down resed HDTV on my ReplayTVs. It's almost as good, and ahell of a lot less time & effort.

Sorry, rant over.

Heh, I'm waiting for the XBOX 360 to be completely hacked so that we can have HD goodness :-) The older XBOX just isn't powerful enough for high rez HD supposedly and it lacks memory - two things I hope the next incarnation of XBMC on 360 doesn't find lacking! :D

That sir will be the Holy Grail of media servers.... It can't happen soon enough!

I would be happy having the current XBMC software on the 360 with HD codecs of course to take advantage of all that horse power under the hood.... :D

I've been using HTPC's for a couple years now and IMO setting up the XBOX to replace one was so easy compared to getting a HTPC to work the way you want it to it's not even funny.
I ended up replacing one of my HTPC's altogether, selling the PC. If I'd known about it a couple years ago I probably wouldn't have the pther two HTPC's either, just the media server and an xbox in every room.

Thanks.

If you are lucky enough to find one, buy a FriendTech DreamX. It is basically an Xbox on steroids and it will allow XBMC to playback H264 and High Definition. They don't make them anymore but I'm told they pop up on eBay every now and then. I've been looking for one for about 6 months now though so don't hold your breath.

The Xbox was never meant to be turned on by remote so, no, you can't do it with just the DVD remote. There are mod devices being sold that allow you to get it work though. Google for "X3IR".

kthx, but that aint H.264 like I supposed would be the big draw once hacked.

So just for a comparo....Start an xvid streaming from your ALWAYS HAS TO BE ON mce pc. Now, turn on/off subtitles whilst streaming. (Hey my kids start yelling from time to time)

Now, switch from the full bit rate DTS audio track to the director's comments on the fly, & back again.

Now, quick skip to & fro within the xvid as it were a vob (sorry thats, mpg for you MCE folks).

If you tell me you can do all that out-of-the-box with xbox 360 & Windoze MCE, like I can with XBMC running on the lowly XBOX & any old NAS. Well you can knock me down with a feather. 'Cuz everthing I've read is to the contrary. (Perhaps I'm behind the times)

Oh, and (full menus) ISO playback over an SMB share , out-of-the-box of course - No plugins.
Can it do that?

Gotta agree with Slack.

I would honestly be shocked if there is any solution out there (say within $5,000 of XBMC) that can do all the things that it can do straight out of the "box" and I'm quite sure there is no other solution out there that is as customizable as XBMC.

I'll admit it, sometime I try to pull something off with XBMC just to see if it can be done. And to date, there hasn't been one thing that I haven't been able to do. Everyone that sees my system is just simply blown away - they can't believe it.

I have maybe a total of $300 in the system all together and there are others out there that have less than $200 in their system.

So when you combine a $300 investment with a system that simply outperforms every other solution out there - it SHOULD be a no brainer.

But maybe I'm just crazy.

Softmodded my (well my kids) xbox yesterday. Much simpler than I expected. Total spent so far was $34. Picked up MechAssault at Gamestop for $4 and then got an action replay for around $30. Next step is to find a good cheap hard drive.

Right now I'm streaming everything from an external drive on my PC and that works great but I'd like to put a 160GB+ drive in the xbox so I don't have to rely on my PC being on all the time.

Glad I went this route instead of buying another media player with a lame GUI.

Hadn't figured this out yet... How do I make certain directories the defaults? For example, I have my videos on an SMB share of of my PC. But, everytime I turn it on and pick "Videos" it starts out at the top level and I have to dig down to my SMB share. Not very family friendly.

A question for the rest of you softmod experts... I have done three softmods myself now and all wtih good success using SID. What I haven't figured out is how do I make a backup of the image onto CD/DVD so I have a boot disc. Can someone provide a pointer to any docs on this... How do I use this to retore or recover if the HD dies...

Thankfully XBMC was forgiving and still brought up the ftp server so mistakes could be corrected.

make sure to make backups on your PC. I keep a mirrored directory structure on my PC with all my mods and then overlay that on top of a new build.

Things you may end up customizing....

playlists
partymode.xml
rss_feeds.xml
sources.xml
milkdrop.xml

get the milkdrop presets mega pack if you haven't tried that...

There is also other stuff like ajax web server and accuweather that I overlay

by keep all this in its own mirrored tree makes upgrading and mistakes pretty easy to fix...

BTW: The authors indicated the fixed the shoutcast radio issue in the 9/4 release...

I have a working softmod installation with XBMC as my dashboard. Is there any particular reason to go through the process of patching the Auto Installer Update 3.0 to 3.04 and using that?

I used the Krayzie Ndure pack to do the softmod but can't figure out what version it is. I guess the newer versions of it are better. The save file I used is dated 8/10/2005. So, hopefully that's the latest.

with the latest builds, you can only use 2.0 skins, so you will have to look on xbmc's website for those.

with the visualization on, I have all tag info(artist, title, album, track#, album art), track position(in time) and track length(in time).

main page is missing track numbers.

Your can customize the listing of scripts for direct accessing at the up arrow icon by modifying the DialogSubMenu.xml located in the PAL folder in Project Mayhem III/skin/xbmc.

Just place 'yes' for visible, the name that's desired to appear, in the label location and the address to find the python for activating the script. Here's a setup for google video:

<description>scripts button</description> <visible>yes</visible>
<type>button</type> <onclick>q:\scripts\GoogleVideo\GoogleVideo.py</onclick>
<id>1112</id> <label>Google Videos</label>

You can arrange them to appear in the desired order by choosing the available pre-set-up locations. :)

I have a question regarding external control of XBMC. I know that there is an executable file (MCE Controller) that can be loaded onto a Media Center Extender which will allow you to control the functions via ethernet with a Crestron or AMX system (or virtually any control system that is capable of using RS-232). My question to all of you out there is, can I load this executable file onto my XBOX and control it in the same manner?

I'm guessing you kep whatever folders these were in.

The issue is likely that XMBc has cahced the thumbs locally. FTP into the box, or use my files to nav to the user data folder, and nuke the My Movies thumb cache.

I forget the particulars, but the folder names on the xbox are straightforward enough that you'll know what to nuke.

Next visit to that location, xbmc should re-grab all the thumbs.

I used an app that grabbed the art from amazon or allmusic. As you browsed your explorer tree it would show results, you couls then select an image and it would download and name it folder.jpg or perhaps it was a .tbn.

Sorry but I forget the name of it. Search xbox scene forums / xbmc forums for 'cover grabber' or some such.

PS Any ideas why I can't get the weather settings to accept anything other than the default locations?
I assume you went to "settings", then into "weather" settings
then highlight "change area code1/2/3" then enter.
type in your city/town's name, click on done,
then it could give you a choice of citys, highlight yours and enter.
that should do it.

you can also double check in XBMC/UserData/guisettings.xml
near the bottom you should see your city, if not try changing it manually
- <weather>

<areacode2>CAXX0518 - Vancouver, Canada</areacode2>
<areacode3>CAXX0343 - Ontario, Canada</areacode3>

Anyone know any tricks for batch setting the artist thumb in the library view. My directory structure has folder.jpg for every artist but it would take foreever to set these one at a time in the GUI....

It looks as though you have it right to me, also -- as TheOtherOne said, be sure you overwrote the old file and placed the new one into the pal folder (or to be completely sure, first delete the old file out to the pal folder, then transfer the new one into it). Should work!!

yeah, don't get what the problem is... i definetly replaced the same file in the pal folder, i even redownloaded it to make sure. I did simply modify some of the "SubMenu" sections that were set "No" for visible, I didn't actually try adding new sections from scratch. Figured that'd be easier than trying to mess with the posy and posx stuff and getting it right.

not really a big deal, it's not that hard to browse to the scripts. gonna try to save the majority of the customizations till after I get and install a bigger hard drive (looking at the 320gb drives)

as for the new release, is this differnt than the T3CH releases? are "pimped" releases better in some way?

Sorry can't help on customizing the scripts menu. I don't use them very much...

The t3ch releases tend to be more bare bones... The pimped releases tend to add in extra goodies. (skins, skin customizations, scripts on the menus, milkdrop presets, etc)...

They tend be on the bleading edge of what tweakers are doing to xbmc. they also tend to release far more often (not as much recently) than t3ch.

I like all the extra crap, some may not. Pimped is a private tracker and its VERY VERY fast usually to download.

I started using them first because they had tweaked PMIII to have weather and RSS on the home page long before it was incorporated into the official PM3 skin.

The differences are subtle but I have had good luck with there builds. It just depends on your tastes.

That said I maintain t3ch on a separate xbox for testing purposes... Either is fine and overall I think any of the most recent builds are WAY WAY better than anything from 1-2 months ago or older. They keep getting more stable and feature rich. I would have guessed 2.0 would have been out by now but it is not and it seems the bugrate is not decreasing dramatically... Who knows maybe by halloween....

a question for everyone....

how often does XBMC crash on you?
just wondering if mine is as stable as everyone else's.

mine seems to be random, depending on how much button mashing I do within XBMC,
seems to average about once in every 4 hours.

The Xbox I use the most will stay up for a week a more and gets used 8+ hours a day. Once in a while it will randomly crash without some obvious cause. Most of the time when I crash its because of messing around with python scripts. Overall the scripts are the weakest and most crash happy part of XBMC. I find the core functions of XBMC extremely stable....

If I have both a gamepad and the remote control IR dongle plugged into the xbox, it will crash all the time. If I only use the remote control and unplug the gamepad, XBMC never crashes.

Yeah....python scripts are usually what causes xbmc to crash for me also. When it does crash though.....it's so convenient to turn on/off the xbox with the remote. I even have a macro button programmed in my universal remote to restart the xbox automatically.

hi! i've been using xbmc for 2-3 months and it works perfect! but recently i've discovered a problem with .img files - they do not show dvd menu and if .img file containes only one movie (regular dvd) it plays fine, but if .img containes several tv show episodes i can watch only first of them... anyone have got the same problem?

Ja Phule, what needs to be done for me to remotely power on/off my softmodded XBOX running XBMC? I have a Pronto remote, if that matters.

I'm sure I could search Google and find it eventually, but I thought I'd ask you first since you have done it.

Thanks!

Xecutor has an IRDA module to do this. It may or may not work with a softmodded box. It is programmed via a USB or serial port seprately to recognize the remote and plugs into a board inside the box as a sort of passthrough. I have it but haven't yet set it up (lol)

How do you do a batch IMDB lookup for Movie icons on the XMBC?

Also when I go into videos it gives me all these options. I only want it to display my NAS box. How can I do this?

Thanks!

Checkout the options offered by the White button on the XBOX controller - you can edit sources etc. using it's alternate menu.

You will need to open up your xbox in order to get this to work.

BLKMGK,

If you mean X3IR when you say IRDA, then you must have the X3 modchip installed for it to work.

I have installed two of the X3IR boards in my modded XBOXes and the only thing I had to do was reprogram the "select" button push from 200ms to 100ms to get the "select" button on the MS remote to reliably select the X3 mod chip and not go directly to the XBOX dashboard.

TCIII

That sounds like the one that Xecutor makes and yeah I have the X3CE in mine. However it hooked into a board inside that I THOUGHT was OEM :o Thanks for the info on setting it up, I've just not had a chance to do it yet.

Is the XIR the one for the softmoders amongst us? ie, it doesn't need a modchip to work. As for the programability. Do I need that if I will be using Harmony Remotes where I can set ms delays etc. ie I don't need to pay extra for the programable version?

So do I get easy kit or pro kit or V2 kit etc

And finally ja phule, is that link the only place to get the XIR? The site looks a bit.....amatuerish? Is it safe. I'll be needing shipping to Ireland.

The chip defaults the "Enter" button to turn on the xbox and the "0" button to turn off the xbox. The programmability option will allow you to assign different keys to power on/off the xbox from what I understand. (pressing enter while the xbox is on does not turn off or restart the xbox, it will just act as the normal enter button).

As for ordering, I ordered it through them and it went through fine. You don't actually order through their website, you order through Paypal.

Whichever one fits your needs. I'm using the Easy Kit.

bought two more XBOX for Christmas gifts for friends of mine and X3CE chips to go with them. Skipping the LCD screens and IRDA mods but putting a switch panel on them as I've already got one spare. Honestly the LCD doesn't add much IMO - unless you're right up on it you cannot see what it is saying and navigating using it is a bit painful I think. I do think maybe a vinyl skin to dress them up\personalize them might be in order. XBMC will be the dashboard on both of them. Of the guys has all sorts of cartoons and whatnot on disk and no easy way to watch them. His wife to be is going to shoot me for giving him a good way to do that :D

FYI....

I ended up buying these things last year for my bedroom xbox....

http://www.nextag.com/xbox-lcd/search-html

I only paid about $50 and thats about all there worth. As a display they totally suck but to select some songs or create a playlist for XBMC where you don't want a real TV they fit the bill. Dunno if other manufacturers make a higher quality product....

Thanks Sean, I saw one of those on one fo the sites while I was ordering parts. They wanted like $150 for it and I thougth they were crazy but for around $50 it's not so bad if you've got one for a media player someplace and don't want a full sized TV in there. Good to see they can be gotten for MUCH less :-)

sean_w_smith,

Computergeeks.com was selling these for $50 a while back and they were offering a $20 MIR so I bought one.

They are not too bad as far as a cheap display goes and are really only worth $30. I use it for a quick checkout of used XBOXes that I am buy for conversion to XBMC.

Yeah man. Thats where I bought it from. couldn't remember... I don't remember the MIR though. That would have been sweet... I think the point of the post is there are cheaper and better ways to display rather than Executer III + LCD. Another alternative would be some kind of automotive LCD display....

Cheers,
Sean

The larger displayes won't integrate the way an LCD data display will. They ARE better in use but not so nice from an aesthetics view I'd imagine. As it happens I have an LCD touchscreen that had been destined for a car and never made it there but I've not tried it with the XBOX as honestly I hadn't thought of it. I really thought I'd get more from the LCD mounted in the box to be honest. It does show free memory, temps, things like that so it's not a complete waste. When a vid refused to play I was able to see it was running out of memory - oops!

Thanks for the clarifications.

How much for the xbox plus the pre-modding? I'm interested.

I would be glad to install a Duox2 and configure a xbmc xbox media server for anyone on this forum at the price of $60. :) I have been modding for years, see for yourself..

For a fairly cheap HD for the XBOX check here -> http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4596277?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG

They had 400s for $100 and there was a $25 rebate available too but that deal ended :( 300Gig for $74 isn't too bad though IMO.

Help - I'm losing my mind here trying to figure this out.

For some of the DVDs stored in ISO format being accessed by a SMB drive, I click on them, the movie plays fine. On a limited few movies, it does nothing, just stays there at the list of movies. I pulled up the log and I'm seeing an error of "error reading from demuxer" (see below)..

Please help. Does anyone have any ideas?

Has this occured with multiple releases of XBMC?

Franky Frank
09-21-06, 12:52 AM
I just upgraded to the bling bling version and it seems to have gotten very bad there.

I saw some ISO files that wouldn't load ,but this latest release has been the worst.

Is there a setting I should change?

Franky Frank
09-21-06, 08:41 AM
Hey --

I had upgraded because I was having some random "locking up" problems with the XBMC and the guy who did the XBMC upgrade for me recommended it.

Based upon your thought, I deleted the new version and reloaded the old version I had on there before (I had saved a backup of it).

The files that were NOT playing -- are playing perfect (with the old release).

I didn't do ANY modifications to the software / XML files, etc. Just a straight copy and run.. I don't think I"m doing anything overly unique either - just running an ISO.

The strange thing is that I can't figure out the pattern to this..

- It's not the file name -- spaces, short / long file names .. e.g. Return Of the King 1 (plays fine). Return of the King 2 (won't play). Gladiator (won't play). Harold and Kumar Go To White Castle.ISCO will.
- NOt the directory (two files in the same directory - one works, one doesn't)
- Also very strange, I even tried taking dvd shrink and "reencoding" the ISO for V for Vendetta again into a different file - same problem. Tried renaming the file that it created -- same problem.

I really don't understand.

I'd stay with the old release, but I was having random "lockup problems". The new release seems more stable (never locked up for me), but this quirkiness greatly reduces its value to me..

Help!

Try some of the interim releases, they have been coming out weekly. You might also want to post in the XBMC forums, perhaps they are already working on this if you are lucky. Since I don't use ISO I can't help much :-(

Ordered a new 300 gb hard drive from outpost for $75. Gonna put my current 160gb drive in the xbox. The 160 is in an external usb enclosure.
Anyone know if it's possible to prep the 160gb drive in the enclosure over usb or is opening up the computer and hooking it up to the ide cable the only way to do it? I don't have a problem doing it this way, just figured it'd save some time if I could just prep it over USB.
Oh, and while I'm at it... Am I supposed to be able to put backed up games (ISOs) on the hard drive and play them?

I've seen a few different places with downloads..
Just curious where you would recommend.

Those releases aren't something I can link to here. However BlingBling and Pimped releases aren't hard to find as Torrents if you search on say BlingBling torrent and XBMC in Google. If you're not willing to use ********** I cannot help you. There's one place that has an FTP site but you must register via a IRC for each access and it's a PITA - I only use this when I absolutely cannot find something elsewhere.

Edit: Cute b i t t o r r e n t is a dirty word?? Sheesh!

Interesting. sorry -- didn't realize it was FORBODDDEN to mention the URls :)

I'll look around..

Still confused why the bling bling version wouldn't play those files -- I'm running the old version right now.

The problem is that the code must be compiled with a Microsoft compiler and this apparently violates the licensing of the compiler. Linking to such code is likely to get people's dander up so best to use Google. If you want to get to the funky FTP site the XMBC home page or one of the many XBOX sites will have FAQs explaining how to do it but honestly Torrent is a much better way to go since you can find and get the code pretty quickly sans hoops.

Contrary to what Blkmgk says, you do not have to go on mIRC to get access to the ftp site where T3CH versions of XBMC are located.... All you have to do is set up your FTP client one time with the login and password and booooom! your good to go each time you need to download the latest version. And an added bonus is that you know exactly what your getting is directly from the T3CH. It takes all of 3 min. or less to d/l with dsl and you do not have to hunt around on those sites that shall not be named....lol

Check your pm frank....

Doh... help... K, I took my old 160gb drive and used xboxhdm to create an ISO of my current xbox drive. Formatted, partitioned, copied old C and E drive to and then locked new drive with eeprom. Everything seemed to go fine. Put 160gb drive in xbox and now when I turn on the xbox it just boots into the default xbox dashboard. Figured, fine, whatever, i'll just softmod it again... Put in Mech Assault and it says it doesn't recognize it as an xbox dvd? The new hard drive is definetly there, I can see my old saved data when I goto memory on the xbox dashboard. Any ideas?

hmmm, just saw this on another page, perhaps that's my problem? I left the new drive set as master:

5. Replace HD

Open your xbox (tutorial) and replace the HD. Make sure your new HD is set to "cable-select" and don't forget to plug-in both the electricity-cable & IDE-cable.

-------------------

yep, that was it. just needed to be on cable select

Hrm, if you read the FAQ it seems to indicate that yes you must reset it each session. T3CH isn't a release I often run as I've found others add things that I like and at least one of them runs their own tracker so I need nto jump through hoops as I outlined previously. I use SmartFTP if that makes any difference - it too is capable of saving passwords.

From the tutorial: Read all the stuff in red ITS IMPORTANT . Then remember the stuff in blue, you’ll need that stuff for flashfxp. And remember each time you use a name and password it will be deleted and a new password will be regenerated so you have to repeat return to #xbins and type in “/msg xbins !list” again for a new password.

The password doesn't change but as I understood it was looked up at each connect and removed from the list after each successful connect - the password remains the same for each user.

BLKMGK, That method hasn't been used for some time now. There are instructions within the old xbins as to how and where to obtain the builds. Much easier than it used to be...I'll shoot ya a pm... look for it. I know that some people are partial to bling bling and pimped versions and I have tried them myself as well. I just always find T3CH to be the most reliable builds. T3CH has been releasing new builds every Monday night around 10pm Central so they are always fairly fresh builds. Another reason I recommend T3CH is if you have problems with a build and take it to xbox-scene for help and it is not a T3CH version they tend to get their panties in a wad and won't give much help. Anyways look for a pm from me, it will explain everything...

I agree with Scotty6595, it's super easy to get new builds once you set up your ftp prog.
open ftp, connect to xbin, transfer rar. done

I'll try the version that Scotty pointed me to, but I had tried the latest version of Gas Giver (that I got from Bittttttetc.) and the bling bling version -- same weird problem with a few ISO files not playing.

The old version seems to play them fine. wacky...

I also have a few question about "my videos".

Using the IMDB search, I can find the movie -- 90% of the time. The problem is for the movies that it can't find.. I know there has to be a way to do this, but how do I use a .jpeg or a screenshot as a thumbnail for a movie.

Also, not sure why, but the "genres" and other info that IMDB pulls down never seems to allow me to look at the movies by genre / actor / etc. Just never has the info..

Any ideas?

BLKMGK
09-22-06, 08:30 AM
Appreciate the info Scotty, when I looked to get the DLs myself that was the info I found and that was the way it was working when I tried to use the system. In the end I have been pretty happy with Torrents once I knew what sorts of file names to search for :-)

As for the IMDB stuff, are yuo saying you want to manually look up a title? If so yes that's possible using the white button on the controller. If what you want to do is add an icon then that has to be done with a JPG (I think) that has a specific extension. Not got the extension info handy but I know it's doable.

Now, if you want something really cool lookup XBMC Wide Icons. There's a project ongoing to create wide icons for MANY movies and TV shows. I've not got that thread URL handy but Google ought to find it for you. You can also get a template for making your own icons. The info from that explaining how to use them ought to help you in your icon quest as well. REALLY think that XBMC needs to make Wide Icons a standard feature and that for a 10foot interface it's the way to go. The downside is that the icons have to be built by the community - you cannot find anything like them from say IMDB. However there's a quite active group of VERY talented folks making them and at least one WEB site hosting them in packs. Hopefully a new database that allows for a lookup like IMDB will be created - it wold rock!

The wide icons seem like an itneresting next step - i did find it..

But in the meanwhile, I'd just like to be able to create good icons for the movies I have.

The DVDPRofilertoXBMC tool seems to create nice TBN files, but I don't know where they go.

Under the user data\my videos section of the XBMC, it seem to create .tbn files for the movies I look up, but they have names like 4d107791. I"m goign to try and just drop a file into that directory with the same name as the .iso file and see if it works

Franky Frank
09-22-06, 09:36 AM
I tried a few different things - putting the file (e.g. The Matrix.tbn) in the Thumbnails\video directory and then putting in the same directory as where the movie is (the SMB drive where it streaming). No luck.

Trying to figure out how to associate the TBN file that I've "created" with the movie itself.

Any ideas?

For softmodding, I HIGHLY recommend the latest version of Krayzie's NDure installer. I just softmodded a second XBOX and the process is darn near idiot-proof. It walks you through the whole process of the softmod. If you install the Evox dashboard you can easily access the MS retail dash if you need to. It also allows you to easily completely remove the softmod if necessary.

It can be found in the "usual places". PM if you need help finding it.

oh, and when ever I goto my xbox games directory, it rescans the directory to I assume make/get the icons. is there a way to cache this so it doesn't have to do it everytime?

Change the extension to .tbn

http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=Thumbnails#Custom_Thumbnails

Also, if you are running the xbox in HD, make sure you set all your thumbnails to be cached at a higher resolution. They won't look very good on an HDTV at the default 128x128. I set them to 256x256. You do this in advancedsettings.xml:

This is a bug, Its auto cached. Most likely simply removing the e:\udata\0face008 and e:\tdata\0face008 will fix this. I have not seen this hang but many common bugs occurr as your upgrade over time with this and occassionaly need to be removed. I have removed mine maybe 3 times in 2 years and I upgrade often. give it try...

Does XBMC work with Windows Media Connect?

No it does not. Just curious, why would you ever need or want to use WMC with XBMC?

Stryker412

I already set up all my shares for my 360 to use WMC, just thought it would be easy to add the XBOX as well.

WMC is Microsoft's UPNP server right? I think I tried this and had no success, I've also had zero success getting XBMC to work with the Buffalo Linkstation's UPNP server. IMO the UPNP support is a bit weak in XBMC right now, it's also a pretty new feature...

I'm not really sure how to set it up right now to access my files of the network. I guess I'll have to go dig for the FAQ somewhere.

Also how do I make XBMC the default dash? I don't care much for EvoX.

Hi,

I was able to get UPNP on XBMC to work with WMC (gotta love all these acronyms...), BUT I only got it to display MPEG and WMV files. It would not play or display avi or mp4 files. (This is a similar restriction as to how the XBOX360 can only stream these files and not avi from Windows MCE2005). So if you were trying to point to a folder that only had avi video files in it (for example), that may be why you couldn't get it to work.

Actually in my case I cannot get XBMC to see any of the UPNP servers much less try to look at content. Yes, the daemon is turned on and other devices on that network segment can see them. It's just weird I guess <shrug>

Sorry for the delayed response, I was away for the weekend.

With regards to Windows Media Connect, I'll tell you what I did. I'm running Windows Media Center Edition 2005. I did go to Windows Update and upgraded to the latest version of WMC (I believe it's 2.0). Turn on your XBOX and make sure it's connected to the network. Then start WMC from the Start menu.

The first time you run WMC you'll get a setup wizard that will scan for devices on the network and allow you to setup folders with content to share. On my system, the XBOX appears as an "unknown device". Authorize the XBOX using the setup wizard and you should now be able to use uPNP using WMC on the XBOX. Make sure that you allow WMC access to devices on your LAN through your firewall!

After the initial setup, you can call up Windows Media Connect from the start menu to authorize or deauthorize any other upnp devices from access to the contents on your PC.

Hey Julie,

Just a question for you on using WMC for uPNP support.... Does WMC limit you to certain media extensions? Just curious why anyone would go this route if in fact using WMC limits XBMC to only WMV, MPG 2, WMA and MP3 files....

I only know WMC from having to use it with my XBOX 360 (dusty from non use...lol).

Thanks!

Scotty6595,

I still need to play with WMC a bit more, but at least from what I have seen, yes, you are limited to wmv, mpeg video, mp3, mp2, and wma. I have folders with mixed media types in them and these extensions can be displayed while avi, mp4, etc are not.

As for why you'd want to use it - smb does use a lot of overhead in order to work - supposedly upnp is not as resource intensive. So if you have files that are borderline playable using smb in theory they might play more smoothly using upnp. Also, despite all the tutorials available to set it up, many people seem to have trouble streaming media to the xbox using smb. Running WMC or another upnp server might be easier for them. This issue is alleviated somewhat with the new GUI setup that means people don't have to manually edit xml files to set up sources anymore.

I've used it with WMC to stream TV shows recorded on my Windows MCE box. These are in dvr-ms format - a sort of mucked up mpeg 2 format MS came up with. XBMC recently started supporting playback of these files directly over smb but the success rate for me is not that great - some files stutter or play without sound. Using WMC seems to work reliably for these files, and I don't have to bother with converting something I'll probably only watch once before deleting it.

When I have a chance I'll try playing with the UPNP server included with Nero 7 and see how well that works. Presumably it would support many more file types than WMC.

I have a recent build of XBMC and am trying to play dvd vobs from my pc but the video continually stutters and pauses. My NIC is set for 100 Full duplex and Xbox shows Link is also 100Full. Thanks for the quick reply, bumped all of my LAN caches to over 5120kb each(double what they were set for), but don't see any difference. Do they need to be even more than that? I was watching my network performace from my pc and it looked like the pc's nic and cpu were hardly even being hit(if that matters I don't know  )

Any other settings that maybe I am overlooking?

Scotty6595
09-26-06, 11:00 PM
Thanks for the informative reply Julie! I feel smarter...lol I have seen the question asked a few times and it made me wonder...

jmco34,

Actually you need to lower your cache settings to improve the choppy playback issues. First cut your streamed video cache in half (from the default setting, not the 5120kb) and try it, then again in half if need be. I have ran mine on zero before... Dont worry you won't break anything playing with the video cache settings...lol

Secondly, try installing the latest build. I read on xbox-scene forums a while back that one of the builds had a few stuttering problems. This has supposedly been fixed. Mine works perfectly so I assume it actually has.

Third. You are using a wired lan connection, right? (Just checking...lol) If not, that is probably your problem.

Try these things out in the above order and get back to me with the results.

Check cache first, this is usually the issue.

Scott.
THanks for the suggestions. I am running on a wired network, my nic and xbox both show up as connecting at 100Full(connecting via a Linksys DSL Router).
I am running the 9-06Bl?ngBl?ng version.(not sure if I can say that on this forum  apologize if I"m not supposed to) .. is there a better version or build type to use?
I should note that I am using SMB to my pc....
I wound up setting all of the dvd related caches to 0, but am still seeing very choppy playback and frequent pauses?

Also is it normal for the inital loading of the video to take a noticeable amount of time(I.e. > 30 secs?)?
Does the Render Method matter?

Thanks for taking the time to try and help!

jcmo34,

Something you said makes me think you need to perform a fresh install of XBMC. Your video's should not take 30 sec. to load. Mine load up in about 5 seconds. This problem is very similar to the one I read about and mentioned earlier.

My next suggestion would be to download a T3CH version of XBMC and perform a clean install.

Hi Everyone

Over the last couple of months i have been looking into purchasing a media server to stream video, pictures and audio from my PC in the study to my HT system in the lounge room.

i was originally looking at the Mediagate MG350HD, that was until i saw this thread and the screen shots that have been posted.

I am now thinking of buying a second hand Xbox and modifying it to run XBMC. I am really impressed with the features that this has and the user interface, expecially compared to the mediagate.

I would like some idea if i have everything that i need to get this working properly just so i can see what the initail outlay will be.

I am going to source a second hand Xbox so that no problem. What is the best way to mod the unit, softmod or hardmod.

The softmod will keep the price down, are there any other advantages?

Is there any real advantage to getting a bigger HDD fitted to the Xbox? Other backing up your games?

My home PC has two harddrives one which all my system programs are stored on and the second 250 gig HDD which has all my videos, photos and music. Both of these drives are IDE and are both 7200RPM with 8m cache.

I will purchase a router as well to hook it up. what is best hardwires LAN or wireless for this type of thing. i have the network cable already run through the roof but i was wondering if wireless was just as good.

Also if i hook my first xbox, my second modded xbox and my PC up to the router will i be able to play games between the xbox's?

Is there anything i have forgotten? any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I have a chipped xbox with a 200GB HDD, I love having all my music in one location, you could load the HDD up with videos when you go on a trip, in general, other than cost, there is no down side.(other than getting banned from xbox live if that's your thing)

wired is best, no connection problems, and higher transfer speed.

you can play games between the xbox's, you just boot to the M$ dash and it will act like a non modded xbox.

I would like to upconvert my DVD’s and ISO files to 1080i in XBMC. From what I have read, it sounds like I have to enable those resolutions in the original MS dashboard first, then enable them in XBMC.

What if I don’t have the original MS dashboard on my XBOX?

Will I have to overwrite my XBMC dash with the MS dash, make the resolution changes, and then reinstall the XBMC dash and make the changes there, or is their an easier way?

Thanks in advance!

PS I do have the HD pack and I am running component video.

I do not believe you need to use the original dashboard to enable higher resolutions - just turn them on in XBMC. You'll need to have an HD capable output plugged into it though (I did anyway).

Anyone know about the 3-d skinnable visualization. Is that milkdrop? If so its hardly secret.... Didn't realize read only support for FAT16/FAT32 was added for USB Drives.....

Here's the official release text...

Team-XBMC and The XBMC Project is proud to announce the release of XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0. XBox Media Center (XBMC) is an award winning, free and open source media player for the Xbox™ game-console. The XboxMediaCenter 2.0.0 point-release source code has now been set in our CVS. We consider that the current code in the XBMC CVS is as stable as a point-release should be. All XBMC users are highly encouraged to upgrade to this stable Xbox Media Center 2.0.0 point-release. Remember, the XBMC source code needs to be compiled with the XDK, and requires a modded Xbox to run. Our thanks goes out to everyone who has tested, reported bugs, and helped fix them in order to make this release possible.

There are many new features and functions that have been introduced since the 1.1.0 point-release, that we cannot list them all here. A few that are especially worth mentioning are; the enhanced GUI/skin-engine, the Project Mayhem III skin, DVD-Video menu/navigation support (with ISO/IMG image parsing), RAR/ZIP archive parsing, a new audio/music-player (PAPlayer) with crossfade, gapless playback and ReplayGain support, Karaoke CDG-file display, Xored Trainer Engine (gaming-cheats), XLink Kai (online-gaming) front-end, iTunes 6.x DAAP and UPnP-clients, and two surprise features; read-only support for FAT12/16/32 formatted USB Mass Storage Devices up to 4GB in size, and a brand new "skinnable" 3D visualizer.

Anyone know about the 3-d skinnable visualization. Is that milkdrop? If so its hardly secret....

Nope its not Milk Drop, it seems to be a different animal. Vortex will incorporate your album art in to the visualization... Its pretty cool. Not the 9th wonder of the world mind you but a nice new addition to visualizations.

I'm checking everything out now trying to lock up the box. I have succeeded 2 times so far. When I reboot and repeat the actiion that caused the lock up I can't reproduce it. Soooo, so far so good...

I will try the included scripts later. I never have great luck with scripts for some reason... I'll report back tomorrow... I feel a snooze session in the reclined comin' on... :p

Oh, by the way,

I did experience some strange FTP issues tonight while downloading the new build to my xbox. I was using Avalaunch to FTP everything over and it froze up twice on me... This has never happened before. I have experienced this with evox but never Avalaunch... I am using FlashFXP, has anyone else experienced this?

MESSAGE FROM T3CH________________________________________________________ ___
This is the nonstandard 'FAT' build.
I have updated 'Apple Movie Trailers' to version 0.91.
This build is based on XBMC 2.0.0 sourcetree as found on Sourceforge.
Other news is the added new 3D visualiser created by MrC. Great work!
Also, Team XBMC snuck in support for USB FAT devices, read more about it here:
o http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=USB_Mass_Storage_support_in_XBMC .
I will release a slightly bigger build soon, so if you want extras, wait for that!

when ever I go into Avalaunch, the front LED turns red, and a reboot from Avalaunch does not cure it, only a restart or a reboot from evox or XBMC will.

Wow, thats strange... I have never had that happen. Sounds like your dash may be corrupt. I have a sneakin' suspicion that my problem is a 1 or 0 out of place some where. I would expect to see alot of post about it if it was a wide spread issue.

I don't know, it still works, and I only use it for transferring xbmc cuz evox is painfully slow.
I suppose I should update it one of these days.

only thing I'd like to do is change the thumbnail size for files when in "VIEW: List"
even if I don't show as many files per page.
it's just a bit beyond my abilities

another thing that's bugging me is the HD pack adds a ghost around everything, looks like I'm going to have to look for a new/different one.

laststarfighter,

The non-MS HD packs can cause ghosting.

I had to switch to a MS HD pack to get rid of the ghosting.

You can find used MS HD packs at the Game Stop sometimes for less than $20.

What is the difference between the "fat" and "slim" versions of 2.0 besides size?

Can anyone point me to a source that discusses the differences?

I tried installing the fat version and ended up getting a missing keymap file (even though it seemed to be there) and skins. I did a fresh install and got these errors.

The slim version worked fine.

Graphically I don't seem to see any differences at all between this and the earlier versions.

I'll just have to go on the hunt for a M$ version...again.

You should be able to find the monster component cables on e bay for $20 shipped. However, with the monster version you will need to get the monster xlink cable also if you want optical digital audio.

Hi all,

If anyone is interested in replacing the XBOX original HD with the same size 5400 rpm drive to hold down the increased heat that a bigger drive can add, try outpost.com.

They are presently selling Seagate 10GB/5400 rpm drives for $9.95. If you go and buy the same drive at Fry's Electronics, it will cost you $19.95.

They are easily formatted with X3 Config if you have an X3 modded XBOX.

I wanted to replace the original drives because all of my modded XBOXes are used and some of them have seen alot of use.

Just a thought.

You can put it anywhere you want pretty much. Once you go into the My Videos section, you should be able to browse the C, E, and F drives. So put the file in any of those drives.

I'm having issues with .ts files and HD .mov files stuttering during playback. I tested on my 360 and the .ts file streams fine. I'm trying to determine if it's a network issue or just the original XBOX not working right.

Running XBMC on the the 360 isn't looking promising. Last I heard, running unsigned content from the 360 harddrive was going to be impossible.... of course, never say never. :)

Hopefully, someone will figure out how to get High Definition playback to work on the original xbox with the help of the GPU. Supposedly, someone from Microsoft already did it so it is theoretically possible: http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1843&page=6

Running unsigned code on the original XBOX was impossible too. There's been a book written on how it was done and it was a pretty incredible effort. Give it time, the 360 will go down too I'm sure - and then I'll buy one! :D

I had ghosting on my non MS HD pack which had component and svideo. with the component output selected, i would have to unplug the svideo connector from the output pack and the ghosting was gone. not sure why.. but it works for me..

F. I assume your referring to me :)

it was only connected with toslink and component connections,
now I have it connected via composite (yuck) but it's easier to read the text.
colors are not as vibrant :(
I was going to use the old connector, but then I'd lose the toslink connection...so it stays for now.

I know they are planning on auto back ground database scanning....
and also linksbox integration

The most stable 1.1 releases actually came about 4-8 weeks after the point release... commercial developers often give up and just don't fix the bugs in their software. I played with 2.0.0 pimped for 3+ hours last night testing all sorts of stuff with no problems... and yes they did fix the browse for artist thumbnail that has been bugging me.....

I upgrade at least once a month and often more than that....

I don't know why you say hunting the updates is hard. Either xbins for tech or the pimped tracker for pimped. I can pull down a complete pimped release in 1-2 minutes.

Here are the steps to upgrade.... I use XBMC as a dash. I run evo-x from XBMC to do the upgrade. Smart-FTP does NOT like copying over a running install. FlashFXP seems to work with the overwrite the running copy approach.

1. un rar the build
2. delete the sources.xml, partymode.xml and rssfeeds.xml
3. FTP the new build over the existing build overwriting all files.
4. reboot xbox and your done...

All in all I can do this in less than 20 minutes with most of that waiting for the FTP to finish. Nothing difficult. settings and thumbnails are preserved. I have only had to delete the tdata and udata twice during 2+ years of using XBMC.

BTW: Please note the daily checkins to CVS have been going on since the project started. They are always working and improving on the software. Except for major point releases like 2.0 t3ch and pimped are pulling code from CVS at their choosing and releasing it. With the frenzy to 2.0 the releases were almost weekly. prior to that. There was only a new CVS build every 2-3 weeks. I would expect that to become the norm again after a 2.0.1 more stable release comes out.

As someone who write commercial software for the past 20+ years I love the fact that these guys are so committed to the software and have the luxury to keep fixing things that many times I as a commercial software developer am not allowed to do in the name of the bottom line....

Oh I understand the software build process. However when I do an install it's usually to a new directory rather than an overwrite in case something with the release goes blooey and there's no worries about dead files. I know where to find the Pimped and BlingBling torrents but going off and checking every week or so, firing it off, uncompressing, then updating my data files on top of the new release, removing the extra language files, moving it over, and then tweaking a few settings takes a little time plus I have to modify my launch shortcut. I guess if I have a backup copy of a known good version I could begin overwriting as you do which would save some effort. I still think some way of doing an FTP update would rock but then there would be issues as to what source to use for the release blah blah.

I've been downloading releases weekly now for awhile although I've not updated quite that often. Always seemed like by the time I was ready to do an update a new one was on the tracker with more bug fixes!

I don't begrudge them working on the code like this and I do appreciate it, especially since Joe Blow cannot just go out and compile this themselves. :-( I sure do look forward to the day this software will run on a 360 :-D

Scotty6595
10-08-06, 07:56 PM
Hey BLKMGK, Why in the world to do wast time deleting language files? Are you that starved for hard drive space?

BLKMGK
10-08-06, 08:26 PM
It's not much space but I really don't need Chinese for instance. Deleting the lang files is pretty easy. Honestly I thought they took up more disk space than they do but really that part is all of two seconds. Copying over my MP3 album art and DVD art takes alot longer out of the UserData area...

Scotty6595
10-09-06, 12:17 AM
Hmm, I don't know... I've been able to keep my UserData for several releases so I don't have to copy over any of my DVD or album art. I can usually install a fresh copy in less than 5 minutes... Thats from xbins --> to xbox and running...

I would think it would be kick ass if some one made a script that was essentially a self installer script that would allow FTP into xbins with unpacking and installing capabilities... Notification of new builds would be really cool to... Just one click and BAM... your done!

:-)

I typically just rename the old version as "xbmc backup"
then ftp over the new build,
then move the user data to the new build and reboot.

and I find that evox is too slow for ftp transfers, so I use avalanche.

that way if I need to revert to an old build, I just move the user data, delete the buggy build(not that I've had to) and rename "xbmc backup" as "xbmc" then reboot.

I agree that a "update xbmc" button would be great.

personally I'd like more control over thumbnail sizing, esp for list view.
(anyone know which xml & where to change the vertical spacing and size of thumbs in list view?)

also better "now playing" access/ functionality

Renaming the old is one way to do it, I just leave the name alone with the date etc. and bring over the new version and swap the shortcut's pointer in the config file. As for art - that stuff is apparently cached in the userdata area. I have over 450Gig of MP3 with album art for almost all albums so this is not an insignificant process. I also have over 500DVD but all of their art isn't yet setup but again - not an insignificant amount of time to copy it over either!

Thats why I just overwrite the existing image and then I don't have to copy over all those .tbn files which does take forever.... I keep stable backup copy and evox in case something goes wrong which it never has....

I have always read you can but I have never tried. I always just edit the xml and BAM! Straight to my video shares I go...lol Of course I alway keep my sources.xml files from build to build so I just plop it in upon upgrading and I'm good to go...

If you use the bookmarks feature which might be good for new users. I still use the sources.xml approach...

BTW: I tried copying the whole XBMC off a running copy with its file manager and its very fast compared to FTP but it failed. need to dig through the log and see what happend.... If that would work that would certainly beat FTP. The performance on small files was blazing....

So I bit the bullet and did the 60mm to 80mm fan swap. New Fan was a Zalman ZL1 which can be had for $6-12 mail order. at 20% load its supposed to be 20db.

First the good news/results:

Target Temp in XBMC auto to 131F

stock fan speed: 26%
Noise: you know what it sounds like....

new 80mm fan: 14%
Noise: Quiet like a new tivo. a faint whir and the sound of airflow.

I have a radio shack DB meter. If I get bored this weekend I can haul 3 xboxes down to the basement where its quiet and take some measurements against my other 2 stock xboxes.

Now for the bad news. Its more difficult than you might expect. Assuming you understand how to get an xbox apart and how the HD and DVD assemblies all fit together it still took me about 3 hours. I could defintely do it faster with knowledge but the big problem was triming the plastic peices. The Zalman fan plastic is very very brittle and shatters when you cut it with regular cutting pliers, trim small pieces because bigger pieces come off. oh yeah wear eye protection the stuff was flying everywhere. Then it gets worse. Trimming that plastic HD tray is a PIA. I had an xacto and some nice 8" size sears cutting pliers. The pliers weren't strong enough for the job. Bigger cutting aparatus is NEEDED. If you have a Dremel moto tool you would be set. That would make it much easier. Don't have one. I might need to invest in cheap one. ( I have 4 more to do).

I followed the instructions here...

http://www.llamma.com/xbox/Xbox%2080mm%20Fan%20Mod.htm

Its important to understand the how the DVD tray and HD tray fit together.

trim the fan first.
make sure you then fit the fan in the hole.
Then fit the DVD Tray and trim it if necessary.
Then cut the HD tray significantly and keep testing fitting it till its all tight.

knowing how to jiggle the tray to get the posts to line up is more difficult, but with gentle persuasion it will all snap into place...

Pay attention to routing the fan wire. There is no clearance to drape over the top or under the fan so beware and route as they recommend. I didn't and had to cut more..

One question I had when starting this project was if I cut 3 of the corners of the fan up what holds the fan in place. The answer is nothing other than the case and the HD trays. the fan is wedged in there very tighly. Its going nowhere. Its a near perfect fit. I have maybe 1mm bulge in the back but the case slides on correctly and looks good... you don't need to crank everything to tight. most of us aren't carrying em around and the xbox is well designed and very rugged. I don't re-install the interior screws that hold the DVD tray or the HD tray. They seem to be unecessary as the clam shell + 6 exterior screws holds the whole little puzzle together. Its definetly an over engineered package.

Regardless I am very happy with the results. It was something thats always bothered me and now its much better and not really noticeable. I look forward to taking some measurements. Anyone else out there have any of their own experiences and comments to add... Any recommendations on a quiet fan with softer plastic that won't explode when you cut it would be welcome....

I too have done the fan upgrade. Rather than buying a special quiet fan I bought a BestBuy open box special fan. It's plastic was a sort of glass reinforced fiber and it cut very easily with wire cutters. I only snipped the bottom two sets of "ears" off of it so that it retained two sets of ears up top. I used wire ties through the two ears up top to secure it to the back of the XBOX casing. I also snipped the metal guard from behind the new fan so that airflow would be less restricted, good scissors worked for this as it's pretty thin sheet metal. I was lucky to have a plug on my fan that plugged right into the OEM socket on the XBOX motherboard. I marked off and ground the plastic trays using an air powered die grinder - the result being I made pretty short work of the plastic! I did have to fiddle this a great deal afterwards and getting the posts aligned to install the cover proved a PITA. However once done it all went together pretty good and as Sean stated - VERY quiet! I have my target temp set lower than he's using and it still works well with no noise heard at all anymore.

I have the MS and the monsters which work fine and some off brand that doesn't work. Biggest problem with monsters is the connectors are two tight and need lube. you can find good deals for the monsters for about 30-35 with the toslink cable if you look...

The off brand HD Video works but I can't select digital in the setup menu. Only analog works...

i personally feel it is way easier to navigate through an .avi or what have you with the controller. the L and R triggers as well as the thumbstick do a much better job of rewinding or fast forwarding than the remote.

Blackbolt, the maker of the MC360 skin has announced a new skin that he is starting... The skin will be called "Ex". Unlike his MC360 skin which was geared more towards the gaming community, his new skin "Ex" will be geared toward the home theater media users. I have included the link to the thread... He is asking for suggestion and now would be a good time to get yours in as he is just kicking things off. I have already made a suggestion regarding more screen space for DVD covers and album art. His answer was quiet suprising and will be very cool if he can pull it off. By the way, my nic is Tickethead over at xbox-scene... I would urge everyone to participate, this is our chance to get a simple, elegant/sleek and fully functional skin that will show case our home theater systems.

By the way, he has stated that the skin will have no text... All graphics. This does not include file names and system info of course....

Blackbolt skin thread... (http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=554169)

Just bought a softmod xbox with XBMC preloaded as the default dashboard. I can't figure out how to boot into the OEM Microsoft Dashboard to check and change my video settings.
Doesn't seem that I can tweak ALL of the video settings in XBMC, though. In XBMC, I see that I can switch dashboards from xboxdash (or something like that) to msdash (or something like that). I have two dashboards available in the C: folder. My questions are:
1. What happens if I switch dashes in XBMC and restart? Is this how I get my MS dash to come up to adjust hardware video settings?
2. Assuming I can get an OEM Dash to boot, then how to I eventually switch back to the XBMC dash?
Since I'm just getting started, I don't want to screw anything up.
Thanks for any help.

Another one:
I'm intending to stream ISOs from my NAS through XBMC and into my SP4805 (854x480 resolution). Can someone walk through what the best settings are for:
1. The 4805
2. The XBMC software
3. The XBOX harware (adjusted in the OEM dash?)
I'm assuming I can do a 1:1 pixel map to the 4805?
I played a movie last night and got super confused with all of the XBMC resolution settings ("original", 16:9 zoom, "black bars" and so forth.) and ended up watching the movie as a much smaller image (I think based on 720 pixels wide instead of the 4805 native 854) than I can get off my Bravo D1.
Any help, and hopefully a quick guide, would be so much appreciated.
Thanks.

If you are using the default PMII skin you should see a small "power" button on the lower right corner of your screen. Select that button and you should get a popup of buttons with one of them being "Exit to dashboard". Select that.

Changing dashes in XBMC will change which one you are taken to after doing the above.

OK, dumb question:
I think what I need to do then is in XBMC, set my dashboard to the other one, not the one it's set at now. Then, when I "Exit to Dashboard", hopefully the MS OEM Dashboard will come up. Then I can change my video settings.
BUT:
After I change the video settings and restart, won't the OEM (not the XBMC) dashboard be what boots up? If so, then how do I ever return back to XBMC? Obviously in the MS OEM dashboard, there's no way to specify a different dash.
Does any of this make sense, or am I talking jibberish?

Try this before changing anything!!!! Which button on the front of the xbox do you use to power up the xbox? On my softmodded box I use the small power button on the lower part of the box to power up into xbmc. The DVD open button, the larger round button on the upper part of the box, powers up my xbox into the original xbox dash. My box is soft modded with crazies endure softmod. Your milage may vary depending on which softmod was used and how it was set up....

Give it a try and let me know if this worked.

Scotty6595

It still shouldn't be a problem though. To answer you question above...yes, you will need to go into the original xbox dash to change resolutions. Not a big deal... From the programs menu or the file menu access the .xbe file that will boot to your original xbox dash. You do not have to reboot the xbox, just click on the file and the box will automatically boot to the xbox dash. Once it is booted, change the audio and video settings to your preference. Once you have finished making the changes just power cycle the xbox from one of the buttons on the front of the box. You will boot back in to XBMC. You haven't changed your boot sequence at all by changing the settings in the xbox dash. Just remember, you have to have the HD cable pack to use the HD capabilities of the xbox. You may have to switch between cables and inputs on your tv while you get the xbox dash and the xbmc dash's synced up. No big deal though...

Good luck and let us know how it went!

Anybody using XBMC to stream DVR'd TV shows?

If so, what harware/software are you using, where do you store files, what format are your files, and how well does it work?
I tend bar a couple of evenings a week and the wifey often ends up watching TV at home, and I'm talking brain-melting shows like America's Next Top Model. It's driving me nuts! We don't have cable and so there isn't much in the way of channel-surfing goodness for her when she's bored.
If I could pop an OTA HD tuner card into the PC upstairs (buy.com has the ATI HDTV wonder for around $50), use something like Beyond TV for TIVO software (fry's has it FAR right now), then maybe she could start recording shows and watching what she wants instead of channel surfing.
Anyone?

Don't be too worried about screwing up the soft mod. you would have to delete the game save hack or mess up the c: drive to make it not work. Modern Softmod use this virtual C partion that make it vey difficult to accidently mess it up. That said running a dash of anysort MS or otherwise doesn't muck with the c drive or change boot settings or anything like that. you have to use some of the fnacy hackerware programs to do those things and cause real damage... One thing to do in case your HD ever dies it make sure you have a backup of the eeprom.bin file. This has a unique signature in it that will need if you ever upgrade the HD or it dies and you need to correctly format and install a replacement drive. in terms of PVR the xbox will play replay tv files out of the box. There is a tivo front end script for hacked tivos too. But XBMC can play about any video file. so if you can record with a PC in some common format like xvid, mpeg, etc you can play it with the xbox. What you are missing is a fnacy front end. Can't really offer advise on which TV card or PVR software but getting your xbox to play it wont be hard. Note: it won't play 720P and up HD streams. you need to stick to Enhanced definiton only to make the xbox play it successully.

Sean,
Can you clarify this statement: "Note: it won't play 720P and up HD streams. you need to stick to Enhanced definiton only to make the xbox play it successully."

I run my xbmc at 1080i with zero problems whatsoever. Softmod and no extra memory...

TheOtherOne

It'll upsize to 720p or 1080i without an issue but you'll have a hard time playing back true HD on the Xbox.

Download a 1280x720 movie clip and try playing it back on the xbox and you'll see. It'll drop 100's of frames. Just not enough horsepower to pull it off.

The xbox can display 1080i and it can scale video upto 1080i from around 480p source material, but the CPU lacks enough power to deocde 720P or 1080 video in any format wmv, xvid, dvix or mpeg2. any kind of high res source material you find will drop many frames and is basically unwatchable...

read this

http://ask.pvrblog.com/2004/10/quality_of_hdtv.html

or this from te official XBMC FAQ

http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/info_faq.htm#hdtv

Q: Does XBMC and Xbox support HDTV (High Definition TV) resolutions?, and HDTV media?
A: Yes and no, but the answer is a little more complicated than that, you see: Xbox/XBMC can output 480p/720p/1080i (if you have a High Definition AV Pack/component cable) and upscale all low-resolution videos (like retail DVD-Video/Movies) to 720p (1280x720 pixel progressive) or 1080i (1920x1080 pixel interlaced) in hardware (linear upscale/upconvert). So XBMC have no problems with upscaling example DVD-video (720x480 NTSC/720x756 PAL) movies to HDTV 480p/720p/1080i. XBMC is even capable of playing native HD video (video/movies with native resolutions higher than 720x576) like 720p (1280x720) and 1080i (1920x1080), however there is here a big snag/limitation and that is that a standard Xbox only has a 733Mhz Intel Pentium-III CPU (processor) and that does not have the processing power to decode those native HD video resolutions, and that means you would only get maybe 10fps (frames per seconds) displayed which would appear so jerky because of all dropped frames that it will be un-viewable. The only solution if you want to play videos with native HD resolutions on Xbox is to buy or upgrade to a non-standard Xbox with a much faster CPU (processor), (like example the DreamX-1400 from FriendTech which has a 1480Mhz Pentium-III that is at least capable of decoding native HD videos that are have up to 720p in native HDTV video resolution. FriendTech do offers trade-in). Note! XBMC does not yet have DVD-menu support so note you only get video on DVD-Videos. Note! You must enable/setup your HDTV settings in Microsoft dashboard, (on NTSC Xboxes).
To make this even clearer XBMC capability on a standard Xbox (with Intel 733Mhz PIII CPU):
- 720x480 pixel video output to 480p HDTV (720x480 progressive) = OK! (eg not upscaled).
- 720x480 pixel video output to 720p HDTV (1280x720 progressive) = OK! (eg upscaled).
- 720x480 pixel video output to 1080i HDTV (1920x1080 interlaced) = OK! (eg upscaled).
- 1280x720 pixel progressive video output to 720p HDTV (native 1280x720 progressive) = FAIL!
- 1920x1080 interlaced video output to 1080i HDTV (native 1920x1080 interlaced) = FAIL!
Note! All above that state FAIL don't actually fail to play, it's just that the Xbox CPU is to slow to decode/render the high resolution so it will drop so may frames that is will be un-viewable.
PS! There are not many standalone DVD-players out there that can even upscale normal DVD-movies to 720p or 1080i and those that can are much more expensive than a modded Xbox ;-P
FYI; Microsoft® & DivX® recommend 2.4 Ghz PC + 384MB RAM for 720p MPEG-4 playback!

Someone had posted a matrix of popular TORRENT site HDTV rips and results with XBMC but I can't find the link. DIVX upto like 950x540 or something like that will play at 30fps. H.264 won't play at that same resolution because its more complex to decode and render...

Thats why I bought a 4 tuner HD tivo 2.5 years ago to handle all my REAL high res content....
