Ja Phule 10-15-06, 10:49 PM rasher,
I use XBMC with the Infocus 4805. Set the 4805 to 16:9 mode and use XBMC in NTSC 16:9 mode and disable 480p in the original dashboard so the xbox will only ouput 480i video. You cannot 1:1 pixel map to the 4805's 854x480 resolution, which can only be done using a digital connection such as DVI and HDMI (which the xbox does not support).
DVD is native 720x480, but it's not stopping infocus 4805 owners (and 720p/1080i/1080p HDTV owners) from watching DVD either on their display either. :)
So, Ja Phule, in your opinion, what's the preferred way to watch DVDs? Streamed into XMBC or Bravo D1 pixel mapped? Sure can't beat the convenience of XBMC, but...
And can anyone chime in what PVR cards they're using to record TV?
I understand now that the ATI HDTV Wonder does not hardware-encode SDTV, only HDTV.
I'm looking for a card that will hardware encode (MPEG-2) both SDTV and HDTV. The only one I can find right now is the ATI TV Wonder 650 at about $120, which is about $50 more than I can spend.
Ja Phule 10-16-06, 06:50 PM Well, I don't have the Bravo D1, but everyone with the D1 says it gives the best picture to the 4805. My main dvd player is the Oppo, but I use XBMC most of the time b/c of the convenience of playing off the network.
If Picture quality is what you want, then you use the D1.
I use software mpeg2 recording with my tv card. I use winDVR and I can stream it's mpeg2 recorded files to the XBMC just fine. XBMC can play the mpeg2 file that is currently being recorded in WinDVR also. My card uses a Philips chip in it's tuner.
Anyone use this Seagate 400GB drive in the softmod box?
For $90 shipped seems like a nice deal.

Scotty6595 10-17-06, 10:15 AM You might want to do a search for seagate hard drives over at xbox-scene. I have read several people complain about lockups and freezes when using the system information search in XBMC with the seagate. From what I read that was the only issue associated with seagates.
ETA: Just went to xbox-scene and noticed this bug is being reported as fixed by a user....
Ja Phule 10-17-06, 12:28 PM I'm using a 160gb Seagate with no issues.
I have installed at least 5 Seagates (200gig variety) in various boxes. They tend to run quieter than the Maxtors. Of the 30+ I've done, I have yet to have a HDD fail. Mostly it's been a laser fix or DVD drive swap due to the extended use from my teenage customers. Plus they leave the machine on the carpet, so it sucks all the dust into it....
I've also gotten pretty good at fixing the controllers, but that's a different story. It just amazes me the condition of the equipment and what these youngsters can do to them. The irritated look from the parents when I tell them what was wrong with their machine pretty much sums up the scenario. Plus the repair bill.
Therefore my boxes are in cabinets, and with wireless controllers and the XIR. Very nice!
Thanks for the replies guys, I was a tad worried about the 16mb cache.
It seems the Replay DVR's have some problems with these, not that it means anything here.
But heck if it don't work in the XBMC, I have other places to use them.
Scotty6595 10-17-06, 05:39 PM Found a great streaming cam of a watering hole in Africa. Lots of animals and it even has night vision... pretty cool...
Just open up a text editor and copy the line below into it and rename it to AfricanCam.strm. Place in a share folder on your network and BAM! Africa in your living room! Works like a charm!
http://live.wildlife.wavelit.net/451OK
Enjoy....
OK - I'll bite. How do you access it from XBMC? Do you see it in the My Videos section?
Sorry for the noob questions - haven't tried the streaming stuff yet.
Opps - nevermind - I have to put the strm file under the share directory where 'My Videos' points to, correct?
http://www.xboxmediacenter.com/wiki/index.php?title=HOW-TO:_Play_Internet_Streams
Then it will play as a video file - correct?
Thanks for the link - my 5yr old is going to love it!
Scotty6595 10-18-06, 10:17 AM Ripper,
Yes, just put the file in a share directory that you can acces via xbmc. For example, I have a folder named Streaming Video that is on one of my drives with DVD's.
It looks like the webcam is down right now, I hope this is temporary. My kids and I watched a pack of hyena's last night hanging out at the watering hole. You should have heard them howl! It was awsome....
ptwyzard 10-22-06, 10:09 AM How do you clear the cache in XBMC. I've deleted some movies as well as made some changes to my music colletcion, however they still show in XBMC. How do you "refresh" the image so they don't show?
Thanks.
Hi,
Is anyone here successfully using the DSM-G600 NAS box successfully with XBMC? I'm getting very frustrated because I can't get it to work right. I posted in the DSM-G600 thread in this forum and got no responses so far, so I'll try here and hope someone can give me some ideas.
I installed a 500GB hard drive and have copied various video, picture and audio files on it. The G600 is hardwired to my router - the wireless capability is disabled for now. From my PC, I can browse and play files over SMB without issue. I am using firmware 1.01, not 1.02. I'm a little nervous about trying the 1.02 firmware, as I figure there's probably a reason it hasn't been "officially" posted yet on the D-Link site.
However, when I try to play the same files over SMB to my modded XBOX using XBMC, the files will play for a few minutes, then suddenly stop and video playback exits to the file menu. The exact same files play from my PC and a USB drive attached to a Linksys NSLU2 (the Slug, stock firmware) using SMB without the slightest hiccup, so I know the problem is not the files themselves and I know streaming to XBMC itself works fine. For XBMC, I am using the 2.0 release, and have experienced no other problems with it so far.
I tried the UPnP functionality as an alternative, but while XBMC recognizes the G600 as a UPnP device I can't seem to see any files. I shared the root of the G600 in it's UPnP settings.
Is anyone using this device successfully with XBMC, or can you tell me what I may need to change to get this to work, either on the SMB side or the UPnP side?
Thanks very much for your help,
Julie

Well it used to be that you could poke around the XBMC directory on the xbox and find 'cache' directories. You could also look for Tdata another folder similarly named on the Q: drives (temp drive mappings).
Nowadays, I suggest you go into the userdata folder and nuke anything listed as thumbs or thumbnails.
Of course you could just rename XBMC to XBMC Old - ftp over a fresh install and then just copy sources.xml to the fresh install. Then enjoy the hard drive thrashing as you access each source, and XMBC re-downloads all the thumbs an caches them away.
land_down_under 10-22-06, 04:52 PM Related to this topic - I have all my movies / music stored on a remote NAS however I notice that in my user data folder I have a tonne of thumbs stored on the local xbox drive - not really a problem but it does take much longer to install a new build.
Is there a way around this ? I take it that the locally stored thumbs are the album / movie information.....
juergen99 10-25-06, 12:44 AM It still shouldn't be a problem though. To answer you question above...yes, you will need to go into the original xbox dash to change resolutions. Not a big deal... From the programs menu or the file menu access the .xbe file that will boot to your original xbox dash. You do not have to reboot the xbox, just click on the file and the box will automatically boot to the xbox dash. Once it is booted, change the audio and video settings to your preference. Once you have finished making the changes just power cycle the xbox from one of the buttons on the front of the box. You will boot back in to XBMC. You haven't changed your boot sequence at all by changing the settings in the xbox dash. Just remember, you have to have the HD cable pack to use the HD capabilities of the xbox. You may have to switch between cables and inputs on your tv while you get the xbox dash and the xbmc dash's synced up. No big deal though...
Good luck and let us know how it went!
Scott
I have a similar problem. I have a softmodded XBOX with UnleashX dash. The bottom power button starts me in the UnleashX dash. If I turn it on with the top button I go to the XBOX Live setup menu. Hitting the back button doesn't do anything. Using the UnleashX file explorer I found E:\dash\default.xbe, running this gets me to the UnleashX dash. I also found E:\backup\xboxdash.xbe, this gives me a "Your XBOX requires service..." message. I softmodded it months ago and don't completely understand the file structure and how the machine boots. Also, according to the file explorer, c:\ doesn't have any files in it. Does that make sense? What's worrying me is the part when I use the lower button and get the XBOX Live menu. Where's my MSDash? :(
Sounds like we have similar problems, jergen99. I need the procedure to restore the original MS Xbox dash so that I can adjust the hardware settings (set video to widescreen). It's like there is too much information available out there and it's easy to get lost. Anyone know of the best way to restore the MS dash? I have backups of my EEPROM file, and it's my understanding that you have to link the dash to the EEPROM, but how?
TheOtherOne 10-25-06, 03:27 PM I don't know what softmod you used, but it should have had an option to patch the original dashboard to continue working with the softmod.
In the AutoInstaller Deluxe softmod it was called "Patch MS 5960". Run your softmod again and look for an option like that... or just get a copy of AutoInstaller Deluxe.
juergen99 10-26-06, 09:04 AM I don't know what softmod you used, but it should have had an option to patch the original dashboard to continue working with the softmod.....
I fixed it :) My softmod is the NDURE w/ UnleashX. I went to E:\ndts (or something like that) and found Xboxdash.xbe (or something like that, I did it last night and am going from memory) and ran it. This gave me an NDURE dash. (Normally it boots into the UnleashX dash). I found a settings menu that had a setting for what happens when you turn the xbox on with the tray button. It was set to XBOX Live. The other option was something like XBOX settings. I changed it and now when I turn it on with the tray button I go right to the XBOX settings menu!
..It's like there is too much information available out there and it's easy to get lost...
You ain't kidding. I was not looking forward to have to wade through all the info out there. I got lucky and stumbled across the right .xbe file. Good luck and please post your findings, they may be of help to someone.
serfrat 10-26-06, 10:53 PM I have some albums that I have both Lossless and Mp3 versions of. I also have some DVD's I stream from a hard drive as well as versions that are compressed...such as DIVX and MP4. My library shows two versions of each movie or cd.
Does anyone know how to see the properties of the files with or without actually playing the file, and way to label what is what after it named from the data base off the net with the album art? Also is there a easy way to delete one movie or cd just from the library?
Wow!! Finally did it! Got the Krazie softmod, 007, and the Action Replay, and opened up my Xbox to the world of XBMC. What fun, and time waster!! Oh well, always fun learning new things. Also set up a Clarkconnect 300g NAS to hold everything. Got all my music and pictures copied over to the NAS in about 30 min. But my yet to be ripped DVD collection, well I guess that takes a bit more time. Thank you everyone for sharing your experiences.
Couple of questions tho... Ripped two movies, American Beauty to iso and Kill Bill I to vob using dvd2xbox for both. Kill Bill no problems, but American Beauty, I can't get the subtitles to turn off. Any ideas?
Also does anyone have any experience with CD+G CD's? Should they work as iso's or is there another way to get them to play in XBMC?
Thanks again!!

press the start button while the move is playing and go to the subtitle menu and adjust to your liking.
If that doesn't work. Try ripping with DVD Decryptor or DVD Shrink.....

Unfortunatly, when you went to subtitles and hit A it would not toggle. I do have a Ripper package,,,still need to install it on the PC. Is Decryptor no longer publicly available?

serfrat 10-27-06, 04:41 PM Does anyone have any good ideas for my question on duplicate files that I put up? I was also wondering if there is a way to see the path to the files (Movies and Music) in the Library or File view for Music and Video's. Sorry if these are newbie questions, but I have searched, and can't seem to find any answers about this.

No obvious solution to that problem from the library view. best workaround for this is to use the files view...

Hey folks, this was the most active XMBC thread I could find on AVS so hopefully you'll have good suggestions - I need to take my XBOX away from any ethernet cables I have but I want to keep it on my LAN. Does anyone have any suggestions for a wireless ethernet adapter to use?
Obviously there's the official Microsoft one made for XBOX but it's pretty expensive, I was wondering if anything else works with the XBOX when using XBMC? I don't play any games on my XBOX, I don't even have a controller anymore (gave it away, use the IR remote) so I don't care about whether the network works for gaming.
Any feedback much appreciated! Oh if it matters I'm currently using XBMC release 2.0 downloaded a few weeks ago (the "thin" as opposed to "fat" release).
bump909 10-28-06, 04:42 PM run a search for wireless in this thread.. here's a message i posted -
i used to have my xbox wired at my old place. new place doesn't really allow me to do that so i picked up a linksys wireless bridge (WET54G) and works like a charm with my linksys wireless router (WRT54G). i'm not sure what would be the best bandwidth test, but i can stream a DVD9 iso from my PC with absolutely no issues. can't even tell the difference from when i was wired.
khyron,
For what it's worth, I'm using a Buffalo wireless ethernet adapter, paired with a Buffalo high power router in 125 mbs mode. I find that I benefit from the greater speed and I personally don't have problems streaming video. The ethernet converter which connects to the xbox allows you to connect three other devices to it as well, which is nice.
HOWEVER...streaming video through wireless works well for some people and not for others (I happen to be one of those people that have no problems). If you're not married to the idea of wireless and you have a little cash to spare you may want to try this:
http://www.netgear.com/Home/Products/PowerlineNetworking/PowerlineEthernetAdapters/HDXB101.aspx
It basically allows networking in high speed over the power lines in your home. It seems to have gotten some good reviews:
http://www.maximumpc.com/2006/09/netgear_hdx-b10.html
Unfortunately, it ain't cheap. D-Link is coming out with a very similar product shortly, so competition should bring prices down some. It may be something you want to consider if you don't need wireless for any other networking or you think wireless might not work well in your home.

Wow, you guys have some intense data needs I guess. I've been able to stream video just fine over 802.11b let alone 802.11g or crazy multichannel accelerated stuff. Maybe my experience is different because I only use XBMC for playback of everything other than DVD (for that I have DVD players). Mostly I just need my XBMC box to be able to read the shares off my Mac via SMB to play stuff I download like TV shows and trailers.
Anyone else have any wireless solutions that involve traditional inexpensive wireless ethernet (anything cheaper than the $99 Microsoft proprietary XBOX adapter)?
khyron,
I wouldn't say "intense" data needs. I don't stream DVDs but do stream other video files and I wouldn't want to try streaming video on a "b" wireless connection. Frankly I'm a little surprised it works for you. I go for the "high power" router just because I'm trying to stream video over a pretty long distance (my PC and my XBOX are nowhere near each other).
If you look at the link for the ethernet converter that sean linked to (and that I mentioned earlier and also use) you'll see it's cheaper than the MS one and a lot more functional.
For the stuff you are trying to do (which is what I use my XBOX for as well). This converter should work fine.

Any of the Ethernet to wireless adapters should work. They are a bit of a niche product tho,,,tough to find under 60 bucks or so. But all the vendors Linksys etc make them,,,,just wait for a deal.

Pimped has a new build out that adds a few new skins to it.... might find it interesting....
I have been playing with the PDM skin and its very cool. its thumbnail display is so slow for me I can't use it but other than that its cooler than PMIII....
MC360 doesn't do it for me...
Current skins with Pimped are:
Blackbolt Classic
MC360
Media Center 2006 v.6
Project Mayhem III
You can find out more info about skins in progress at:

Cocophone 11-03-06, 03:51 PM I have my video files stored on a fileserver running windows 2000. All the files are in MP4 video format with AAC audio encoding. I would like to have an xbox play the video files from my fileserver.
My question is does the xbox have enough processing power to play the mp4 files without skipping?
Also what player does xbox media center use to play the files? Currently, I use zoomplayer for about everything.

XBMC uses mplayer....
What resolution are the files...
If they are less than 720P they should play fine....

Cocophone 11-03-06, 11:47 PM I'm thinking maybe I should replace some of my 200gb drives with 400 or 500gb drives and re-rip just the main movie from my dvds. That would probably average about 2.5 to 3.5 gb per movie. Just leave them with the original compression and AC3 audio track. I just bought a 400gb seagate at work for $89 with free shipping.

re-encoded DVD's play fine in XBMC. They just look worse due to the transcoding....

Ja Phule 11-04-06, 06:28 PM I Just noticed they finally fixed the 480i/480p output in XBMC. Previously, we would have to disable 480p output in the original dash to get 480i output via component but now, you can enable 480p and setting XBMC to NTSC 16:9 will now do 480i with 480p 16:9 of course being 480p.

Thanks I saw they made that change a while ago but didn't realize that eliminated the need to go into MS dash to setup video modes....
BTW: There is a new pimped CVS build out...

dreamhost 11-06-06, 06:35 PM just checking back in to see if it is possible to display thumbnails for .wmv files with any skin as of yet?
It's really the only 'feature' that I have been desperately missing with xbmc, other than that, all is very very good.
thnx in advance

not other than the ability to download a thumb from IMDB for a movie there is not auto thumb generation based on the first frame of the video like you get in windows...

If its in a standard def chances are XBMC will play it. I found democracy now TV on mininova in MP4. It should play fine...
is there something specific about this torrent?

Sorry, what I was asking is:
Who's got the easiest implementation for getting regularly scheduled content off of the internets and on to their server to serve up to XBMC?
I mean, yeah, I can manually download content from torrent sites and whatnot, I was just wondering if anyone had a good simple (wifey-proof) way to AUTOMATICALLY find new content and automatically download it.

This might not be exactly what you're looking for, but just in case you didn't think of it already...what my wife and I do is, we have most of our content actually on my Mac, not on the XBOX itself really. So we just have My Videos come up at startup and the top bookmark in our list is an SMB share. Then you can be using Democracy or whatever RSS plus torrent type thing you like on the Mac (or PC or whatever) to be grabbing your stuff, and then just watch it on the XBMC equipped XBOX over whatever kind of LAN you have.
Hope that's somewhat useful.

dreamhost 11-10-06, 03:03 PM ok..... crying uncle here....lol
I've searched so many pages on this thread that my eyes are blurring out. I'm sure it's been asked before but can't find the answer.
Last night I rebuilt my server from scratch. I moved all my dvd's to much larger drives and now need to 'reset' my xbox to remove the music and movie database. Then I can begin the tedious task of readding everything in.
How exactly do I go about erasing the information on my xbox?
I know I didn't change any passwords or anything else on the xbox, using avalaunch when it was setup. Anyone know what the 'standard' username/pass are for ftp?
thnx so much in advance

Go into the settings menu for both audio and video and select clean library to remove the old stuff that no longer exists...
There is nothing hard about adding it back. you can select scan all to database from the root of your tree for both audio and video and it will add everything in one step.
default user password for all dashes and xbmc is user: xbox pass: xbox
All this can be easily found by searching the online XBMC docs (took me less than 30 seconds to find these links) :)

I found a few more.

land_down_under 11-12-06, 10:36 PM New point release is out.....xmbc 2.0.1 in both slim and FAT versions...
Now that I have a few XBOX's around the house streaming media from the home network, I'd really like to mod the cases. The only case mod info that I can seem to come across is mods to the original XBOX case. I'd really like to change the cases to component-style cases.
Anyone have any information?
Scotty6595 11-14-06, 06:30 PM I have seen a mod that was exactly like you were talking about but for the life of me I can't remember on what forum I saw it on... I'll try a couple of searches tonight and see what I can come up with...
land_down_under 11-15-06, 02:13 AM Yeah Ive seen it to but now cant find it. There are a couple in PC cases but the one I was looking for was in an old VHS / DVD case - the principles should be the same though...

land_down_under 11-17-06, 02:48 AM I asked this over at xbox-scene but never got a lot of feedback so thought i would post here to see what you good folk have to say:
I have a PAL xbox running xbmc which I have flashed to NTSC so I can use the hi-def pack. My plasma TV has a resolution of 852 x 480.
All my DVD's (PAL) have been ripped to a NAS.
I have set the xbox to 480P to match the native resolution of the panel.
Is this the best option for me given I want to use the component cables and my DVD's have been ripped as PAL. Do any problems occur during the de-interlacing given a NTSC machine is playing PAL DVD's ?? I have also set the "play PAL videos at NTSC rates" option.
Picture quality just isnt as fantastic - although very good - as I was expecting it to be......
slevy951 11-17-06, 07:30 AM I'm using the UnleashX dashboard with the Duox2 mod chip. The version I have was compiled in late December 2005 (I had someone do the mod for me). Playing the isos worked for me automatically. I may have had 1 dvd so far where I couldn't navigate the menu.
Scott, the only app I used was the one i created only because I wanted to use the dvd profiler dvd covers and also have it quickly create a listing of my collection into xbmc to easily browse. It's not fun having to manually create a fake iso or video file of each movie when you've got over 200 movies. Those fake isos are simply an empty text file with and iso extension. You can simply put the dvd isos in a directory and xbmc will scan all the isos with imdb and it will grab movie info and movie poster which will be used as the thumbnail. The scan isn't always perfect but you can manually and easily update the movie info for each movie using the imdb search.
I want the dvd profiler dvd covers because I have in some cases, 3 or 4 versions of the same movie and I just like the idea of seeing the actual dvd cover as opposed to the movie poster or dvd cover provided by IMDB.
Ja Phule-
So are you saying all I have to do is use DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter to rip my DVDs to .iso format, put all the ISO's in the same directory, share that directory and point xbmc to it and xbmc will find them, make thumbs from IMDB and play them? Do I understand this correctly?
You've inspired me do mod my box and dump my DSM-320!
TIA,
Scott

They don't even have to be in the same directories. XBMC supports multiple paths per bookmark so they can span as many directories and drives as you want.
I currently have all of my movies and tv shows on 6 different hdd's spread across two different computers on my network.
Scotty6595 11-17-06, 10:11 AM Scott,
Yes, its that simple! I have about 900 gigs spread across 4 hard drives and multiple directories. Very easy to set each one up with the "Bookmark" option. For my self I just edit the sources.xml file and keep a backup copy. As a new user I would recommend using bookmarks...
Good luck!

Scotty6595 11-17-06, 02:39 PM Game Stop or any of the other similar places in the mall usually carry new/refurbed/used xbox's. Also, Craigs List...
bump909 11-17-06, 02:59 PM I don't know why you say hunting the updates is hard. Either xbins for tech or the pimped tracker for pimped. I can pull down a complete pimped release in 1-2 minutes.
i'm trying to get the new pimped release (11/14/06) and the pimped tracker site requires a login. anyone have any trouble creating a login? it keeps telling me the account name i'm using is in use and i've tried multiple random usernames.
Poparelly 11-17-06, 05:52 PM Can the XBox hold a BIG hard drive like a 750GB IDE drive?
Poparelly 11-17-06, 06:06 PM Would this make for a good media server storage solution?
http://www.bixnet.com/4usenfor3ide.html
I could hook it up to one of my older computers and let it sit on the network for DVD storage. It looks convenient and expandable. Think about this...start out with a small OS hard drive in the PC. Add a 750 GB in the PC, then add 750 GB drives as needed to the USB enclosure for a maximum capacity of 3.75 TB! Considering that the drives will drob in price with time, this is a pretty economical way to get a massive storage solution.

Ok, I'm not a fan of someone who posts a general "help me" with what I should do thread but after reading through this thread and researching xbox mod sites I am lost. I have a Avel LinkPlayer to stream my 250+ movies I have on my movie server. It is ok but I'm always looking for something different. Since I have an Xbox sitting in the closet I thought why not get it modded?
My question is what mod chip is the best for streaming movies? Once I mod the chip what do I need to do to set it up for streaming movies? What is the best way to get DVD cover art to display on the interface. Thanks in advance for your help.

If your only going to stream movies and audio, you probably don't need a mod chip. Mod chips are mainly for enabeling you to play copied games on the Xbox. I don't have a mod chip in mine -- But I did what's called a "Softmod", which is installing new software to run XBOX Media Center. The XBOX Media center is the software that lets you play movies, music, get the weather forcasts, etc. It plays movies and music flawlessly!
sean_w_smith 11-21-06, 12:40 AM Any mod chip or softmod will do the trick. There is no difference functionally in what you can do with a softmod or hardmod other than fancy bioses and run linux. If you want a chip a cheapo like a duox will be fine. softmod is even cheaper. chip makes it easier to get going again if the HD dies but other than that. There is 0 difference that is not esoteric associated with all the fancy mod chips. Games, Apps, etc they all allow you do the same things and run the same software....
you need to load xbmc after that....
www.xboxmediacenter.com
XBMC can automatically search the IMDB and pull down artwork and build a database. you can search by actors etc once you do that... Its very easy....

slevy951 11-21-06, 07:24 AM UPDATE-
xbox is now soft modded! Total cost-$15 for a memory card. Tremendously easy to do. Now I have to get the xbox on my network. Cabled ethernet is not an option. Have to go wireless. My question now is will standard G wireless be good enough to stream the DVD's or should I upg to the draft N stuff? Current router is a USR 8054. I know I'll have to get a bridge at the xbox to get it connected.
Thanks for all the info in this thread. It's been invaluable.

DVD maxes out at about 10mbps, a strong wireless signal for 802.11g is 54mbps. Assuming you have a good signal strength with your network, it shouldn't be a problem.
eliastico 11-22-06, 03:29 AM First of all, I have to say avsforums is great and this thread was the reason i got a premodded xbox myself which I'm quite happy with. I do have a weird problem though. I get distortion with the mp3 playback when i'm streaming music from my pc (smb shares). I think the distortion isn't there when listening to a original cd that's in the xbox cd/dvd drive. All my mp3s bitrate is at least 192kb/s or more so it shouldn't be a low quality source issue. The mp3s also play fine when I listen to them on my comp that is connected to the same receiver/speakers as the xbox. I have the advanced scart cable hooked up to my tv (for audio I use a philips "home theater in a box" dvd player/receiver) and I also have a 3rd party component cable set that's hooked up to my projector (and the l/r audio cables go straight to my philips receiver. With both setups I get the same kind of distortion.
Also, in movies the audio volume is really low, so I have to crank up the volume to max, which again causes a little distortion and it's still too low. I have made sure that the xbox volume is at max (with the right thumb stick). All help and ideas would be really appreciated. Thanks in advance.

not familar with SCART. Is there a possibility of hooking up a toslink digital output. Make sure the volume levelling is off also.... you find a broader audience of europeans over on xbox sceene of the xbmc site that may have more experience with your setup....
Anyway another suggestion would be to swap connector packs with a friend etc and see if there is any difference... I know in the US with high def video packs there is a lot of variation in results... I have an HD video pack for example that won't correctly use the toslink output.

gilbreen 11-22-06, 11:42 AM I have soft-modded my Xbox and have XBMC up and running. I have seen a post or two about locking access to a bookmark but I have not been able to set it up properly, or at least it is not working how I thought it would I have two bookmarks for our ripped DVDs both of which point to a their own folder on our NAS. One folder has our kids DVDs and the other has PG/PG-13 DVDs which I don't want our young ones watching. I thought with the lock mode, I could have XBMC ask for a password if someone selects a DVD from the PG/PG-13 folder.
I believe one needs an additional xml called AdvancedSettings.xml to enable the master lock, but I am not sure what it needs to contain. The XBMC wiki mentions the following to include:
<masterlock>
<startuplock>false</startuplock> # true prompts user for code upon startup
<enableshutdown>false</enableshutdown> # true shuts down xbox after 3 failed attempts to enter correct code
<automastermode>false</automastermode> # automatically enters master mode if the master code is given.
<loginlock>true</loginlock> # whether to use locks on login screen or not
AdvancedSettings.xml ONLY:
<maxretries>#<maxretries> enter the max number of retries to input code, 3 is default.
</masterlock>
And then in my sources.xml for the bookmark I want to lock I have (but without all the xx's in the MD5 hash):
<bookmark>
<name>DVD Library</name>
<path>smb://10.0.1.100/media/Videos/DVD/</path>
<lockmode>1</lockmode>
<lockcode>5b168fxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx457697</lockcode>
</bookmark>
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks.

SoftMod or HardMod?

sean_w_smith 11-25-06, 08:20 AM I added another Xenium Gold modded Xbox. I copied over the current XBMC apps folder from my xbox to my new xbox. XBMC works fine but there seems to be a file permissions issue or something. When I try to add/edit anything from XBMC it freezes (example adding cover art or editing SMB paths. Any ideas?
Never been able to do that successfully... Nuke the userdata folder, copy over your sources etc and have it rescan the database... should consider deleting f:\udata\face... and e:\edata\face... while your at it...

Stryker412 11-25-06, 10:52 AM SoftMod or HardMod?
Sean
Softmod sorry. I have found a few tutorials but they're all different as to what files are needed and the procedures involved. I can't seem to find a working hdprepa file either.
Steve Kinkead 11-26-06, 07:18 PM I just finished upgrading my HD on a softmod Xbox. This tutorial is the best tutorial I found:
http://www.techfreaks.org/articles/modxbox2.shtml
You will need a desktop PC (i.e. a laptop won't work) for installing the initial C and E folders on the new disk.

Nice, thanks. I'll try that one.
I have a quick question - I have finally hooked up one of my modded boxes to my 55" HDTV, set the video mode to 480p 16x9, started a ripped ISO from the network drive, and ..... well, it's not as good as a regular DVD. Definitely lost some picture detail somewhere. Plus I'm stuck with black bars on the top/bottom for movies that are anamorphic widescreen. Monster House is especially bad, and resembles a soft VCR image.
So I am curious as to what I did wrong - all ISOs created by Shrink (set to DVD9), and movies located on USB 2.0 drive attached to Terastation. The same input on the TV was switched to DVD to verify picture quality.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

compare an original DVD played on Xbox to your reference and then compare the same to the ISO.l. That will tell you if what bothers you is XBMC video processing or the Shrink did to the original image during transcoding/etc.
you can adjust the view mode to elimate the black bars on most DVD's. (Hit the start button while video is playing and look at the options).... (the stand alone Xbox DVD player has an analog zoom which is very cool for tweaking the scaling to your liking but it won't play over the network).
XBMC is not particulart adept at de-interlacing. My TV has Farjouda DCDi decoder and scaler so I run the XBMC GUI at 720P and the Videos at 480i and let the TV do the de-interlacing and scaling. I find this improves my image quality significantly. your mileage may vary....
Sean
Ahh - thanks!
I'll try it tonight - plus I can use my DVDO Iscan Plus to perform the scaling as needed.

You should only enable deinterlace if you have a progressive display/TV, like 480p or 720p.

De-interlacing seems to be improved but I still notice a lot of jaggies when XBMC de-interlaces versus letting my TV do it...
Does anyone know what sync-even and sync-odd options in XBMC are for?

I thought sync even/odd isn't an option anymore? In any case, I believe you set it to either one of them to get true 480i output.

Now there is non, bob, weave and bob inverted, weave inverted. not sure what any of them mean but at 720p they all look like crap. look fine at 480. Stand alone xbox DVD player looks fine. There is something bad going on with interlaced files played at 720P on the xbox regardless of what I do to them. Luckily the TV does a good job. I just got a Sanyo PLV-Z4 projector and its much better than xbmc at de-interlacing.

TheOtherOne 12-03-06, 05:15 PM There was a new T3CH build released today too. I loved what they did with the list view. It would enlarge the thumbnail as you scrolled over it.
I had way too many problems though. It was freezing up on me randomly when I would do things like switch from file to library mode or just changing from a thumbnail to large thumbnail view. I had to go back to 2.0.1. Hopefully the bugs will be worked out because I would love to get that new list view back.
Scotty6595 12-04-06, 04:26 PM Wow, that has to be the buggiest release I have ever used...lol I would suggest everyone waiting for the next release before they upload this one to the box...

perrypoke 12-05-06, 12:03 PM Any suggestions on how to get XBMC to play on my projector (component video), and my small TV (composite video) at the same time? Right now I use a Generic HD pack, but it only has component out, no composite or S-video. I REALLY don't want to give up my component video and digital audio, so I really can't go back to the regular XBOX cable.
My Harman Kardon receiver does video up-conversion to component, but will not down-convert back down to composite, so that is a no go.
Any other suggestions so I don't have to turn on my projector every time I want to listen to my music?
Thanks in advance!

slevy951 12-06-06, 11:31 AM UPDATE-
Got the wireless bridge(USR5432) in last night and config'd it on the network. Connected it to the xbox and I could FTP to it immediately. Copied over XBMC, took about 15 min. Rebooted xbox and BAM! It works! I had previsouly ripped "The Abyss" to my PC and shared the folder. Went into My Videos to set up the share. Advice-'browse' is your friend. It found the folder and the .ISO. It played flawlessly! Wife and I are very impressed! Only had about 2 hrs to play with the setting and I think I've already messed something up (I could navigate the Abyss menus when I started out and now I can't!!!!) but I'm stoked! I will update more as I figure out more.......again, thanks to everyone here!

Does anyone knows where can I find someone to mod my x box in the Ct area?
Thanks.
I'm Sold! The Xbox Mod seems to be the way to go! I have an original Xbox version 1.0 (with a dead HD - which is okay as I plan on putting a 200 Gig Seagate ST3200827A in it)
Is there a place to get step by step insturcitons on installing the new HD & then Moding the Xbox or do I Mod first and then the HD. What is the best Mod Chip for streaming standard DVIX movies?
Thanks,
Sheldon

The DUOX is a very cheap and very good. All the other chips are over priced and have extra features that virtually no one cares about....
you can find lots of info on xbox scene....
Sean
Thanks Sean,
If I install the Duox will that over-come the lock hard drive issue or will I still need to make an EPROM reader to get the HD serial number so I can install the larger Hard drive in place of the failed original?
thanks again for your help,
Sheldon

Xenium ICE - It's own FTP server - I think that feature is really worth the cash. I have borked my install in the past, and panic'ed when box failed to boot. After my heart stopped racing I power down, & hit the eject button. Presto Xenium OS up & ftp server on.
TheSiege 12-11-06, 07:55 PM xenium gold are the ones i use, but i just soft mod now, its cheaper, its easy and it only takes about 30 minutes to do it all. if anyone is looking to get rid of an old xbox, im looking to acquire
also does this DVD profiler work with AVI mainly divx/xvid?
sean_w_smith 12-11-06, 11:32 PM There is no need for BIOS with FTP Server. A boot CD or DVD will run the FTP server just fine... Ex. Slayers install or Auto Installer Deluxe... Its not worth $40 to me to have to insert a disc....
To answer the previous question ANY mod chip will let you put a XXX GB blank HD in, boot auto installer deluxe and be fully running in no time....
There 0 difference between mod chips other than worthless fancy features and the LCD control you get with some...
Sean
And is worth it to me.
Not to have to find the disk.
Not to have to re-author it since it's no longer readable in 8 months of storage.
YMMV.
sean_w_smith 12-12-06, 03:47 PM SoftMod with larger HD...
Last night I finally did a softmod with a larger HD...
I used SID 4.5 on a 5960 rev of the MS-DASH
backed up the disk and eeprom.bin via FTP once the softmod was running.
Then I used xboxhdm to build a linux ISO to build the new larger drive...
Here's something to watch out for... There is a prompt in there copy files to C and E (yes/no)
I typed Y which meant no so nothing got copied. This results in an error 13 code once you boot up...
Figured that out and finally got the new larger HD to boot....
Here's a question for those who have done this?
At that boot the larger disk booted into the Xbox dash and not the softmod. I would have guessed it should have still loaded the softmod.
So I re-ran the softmod installer and re-installed the softmod and I was working fine...
I had to use unleashx (part if AID) to format the G drive but now everything is working fine...
Any info on whether having to re-install the softmod after installing the new larger HD would be appreciated...
Overall not too difficult a process but having a mod chip certainly makes this much easier...

Truly stupid newb question... to get the XBOX to output HD what is needed? I thougth S-video would do it but apparently no - all I've managed so far is ugly upconversion through my Yamaha reciever. I have multiple dongles and an optical audio, is component what I want for this? I sense another dive behind the A/V center coming on <shiver> Now that I finally have an HD compatible display, thank you COSTCO and Vizio, I'd like something other than the limited stations the QAM is pulling off my cable system. TIA!
P.S. Yeah, have a file that appears to be coded HD - 700Megs for 1hr vs the 350 or so I'm used to. Receiver claims it's getting 480 from the XBOX and yes I enabled HD in the BIOS..
I'm on a ppc phone ont eh mobile version of site. I wanted to subscribe to this thread and can't see another way to do it witout posting (at leaston mobile version of site, I know you can subscribe to thread w/o posting on normal version of site)
I have a modded xbox with 200gb hd (wish I had done larger) for a few years now. I never got a wireless adapter for it but just have connected by ethernet cable to pc. mostly transfer games off the xbox to pc to make room for new ones (again have too many games so wish I had larger hdd)
sometimes I'd bring xbox own to main tv to play stuff or play some video files like back when the paris hilton sex tape was out and everyone that came over wanted to see it. I'd just transfer it onto xbox and play off that on big screen tv instead of having ppl come to office to watch on 20'' monitor.
also I used just xbmp and believe it or not never got xbmc but though I'm about to get 360 I may still get xbmc and I know my bro has it.
should get wireless adapter too so I don't have to transfer movie files or be limited to the room with pc to stream from it.
any links to get wireless adapter and dl of xbmc with instructions how to install on my xbox. I have executer2 (i think) mod chip btw and prob an old version dashboard/bios etc. or whatever.

Svideo is 480i. You need a High def cable pack and run component video into the TV. Then you need to go into MS dashboard and adjust the video settings to match the capabilities of your new TV and then you will be in business...

any links to get wireless adapter and dl of xbmc with instructions how to install on my xbox.

Sean
Thanks Sean! I can do component no problem as I've got at least one module that has that. Must the MS dashboard be used? I cannot boot that on my box for some reason I don't think. I can turn it on in the Executor BIOS though no problem. I'll try it and see, will report back if there's weirdness. Cannot wait to have a more easily accessed AV setup!
Cocophone 12-13-06, 10:47 AM Can the xbox output 720p? I didn't think it had the horsepower to decode HD streams.
720 yes, 1080 is supposed to be an issue. There are supposedly some efforts ongoing to use the onboard graphics accelerator in order to use less CPU but I do not know the status of that. Not sure what the level is on the files I have but I dooubt 1080 anything considering their file size.
Well shoot! Hookup the component, turn off the S-video\unplug it, and umm no video. It's either that I need to set something different with maybe the MS Dash (nooo!), or my truly cheap AV pack is junk. Well okay I know it's pretty much junk but it's perhaps completely non-functioning junk. Need to find an MS HD pack anyway but I'd love to figure this out one way or the other. Receiver seems to think there's no signal on those inputs - if the wires are crossed do you just get ugly colors by chance? The ordering of the 3 components on the HD pack I've got isn't the same order I'm used to but swapping things around changes nothing.... Open to suggestions including how the heck to get the MS Dash to boot!
TIA!

Depends on which cables you flip as to whether you a a wacky picture or no picture...
I would guess your issue is swapped cables or the HD pack is junk. THe monster cable packs are good and can be found on amazon for a good price...
Without going in the MS dash it should at least output 480i via component... Thats not causing your no picture issue...
to run msdash try XBMC file manager browse to C: and run the .XBE in the root of c:\

The xbox can output 720P and 1080I just fine. And scale low res videos to those resolutions...
It just can't decode native 720P or high data streams.... These are two different issues...
Jpeg photos at 1080i look great... Milkdrop looks incredible at high resolution....

Steve Kinkead 12-13-06, 02:45 PM SoftMod with larger HD...
Here's a question for those who have done this?
At that boot the larger disk booted into the Xbox dash and not the softmod. I would have guessed it should have still loaded the softmod.
So I re-ran the softmod installer and re-installed the softmod and I was working fine...
Sean
I had the same problem when I upgraded my harddisk. Luckily, re-installing the softmod only takes a minute, so it's no big deal.

Could you explain a little more about this.
Ooookay, frustrated I hooked the XBOX directly to the LCD - nada. Looks like the HD pack is a goner. I looked on amazon for something like you had described with no luck, searched EBAY and found a 3pack of XGL400 cables for cheap cheap. Please no one stomp on my auction, there are other lots from the same vendor just as cheap. We'll see if these are knockoffs or not, frankly if it works I'm happy and this will allow me to use HD on another XBOX I will be hacking and have a backup. 10ft cable too which is nice! Once I'd gotten the model # I checked Amazon, ouchie they was $44! :-O I'm further skeptical that what I'll get will be the real deal (lol).
As for the dash, I was indeed able to run it from the root of C: as you described without issue. Strangely there's no option other than widescreen, letterbox, etc. - nothing for resolution. As I've been told that the system won't show you those options without something valid to output it with plugged I'm further convinced it's the AV pack. However I do have it switched to S-video right now so maybe that's making it look low rez? If I switch it though I have no video to follow on the screen so... chicken vs egg problem. <shrug> The only reason I bought this less than wonderful AV pack was that it has coaxial audio output onboard which I prefer to optical. The Monster is optical or standard stereo so I guess I'll be biting the bullet on this and switching to optical.
Is the 360 this much of a PITA? I'm waiting for it to get hacked to run 3rd party code like XBMC and hope that by the time it does this will be clearer to me <ahem>
Appreciate the help - I'll get it working yet! I very much look forward to seeing for myself what the box can and cannot handle. right now my only HD is OTA via my cable system - bleah! ;-)

There is talk in that that thread that the knock-off "BOX" brand works pretty good.
FWIW this cable http://www.inkjetcartridge.com/xboxcommutator.html is the one I have - yeah not so hot even for the parts that work. It has a coax output that won't fully accept the connector (lol). I find this post -> http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=213487 pretty interesting as might others. Fingers crossed that the cables I've ordered will be fine since the pinout looks easy enough, actually using that last diagram I might even troubleshoot the cable I've got!
Edit: Okay, popped open the box I've got. I hadn't before thinking that it had to do some processing and whatnot and was more complicated than it is. Anyway to say the guts were craptacular would be a compliment, I did fewer cold solder joints in Elementary school! The switch is looking pretty rough in particular which could explain quite a bit. I'm not sure if I'll touch it up or not since 3 new cables only cost me $15 and I need projects like a hole in the head. Perhaps if I get impatient and REALLY want coax sound. It really is pretty scary how badly some of these things are put together :-(

I'd recommend getting the official XBox HD component pack or the monster HD Pack (monster pack requires you to get audio cable if you want optical audio). You can get the monster cable on ebay for around $20.
I used a 3rd party adapter previously and got a very soft picture. My pack had a switch on it that switched between component and svideo, you should see if yours has something similar.
Thomas J. Coyle 12-13-06, 10:09 PM Hi all,
I have been very successful finding the original MS HD component pack at the Game Stop stores.
They sell used original MS XBOX accessories for very reasonable prices (I purchased the MS HD component pack for $19.95 earlier this year) and they are guaranteed to work or you can return it for a full refund.
It is worth checking out the MS XBOX accessories that they have for sale around once a month.

I see the monster cables at 21 strores on amazon....
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00005TN7U/ref=dp_olp_2/002-5851025-8972068
I bought three from digital fix and they are $7 each...
you need a proprietary toslink connector from here...
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00005TN7V/ref=dp_olp_2/002-5851025-8972068
$18...
The MS Pack is good but you also need component and toslink cables as it is just a dongle with no cables... The monster has the advantage of nice cables included... The fit is tight but seems works for me...
Either the MS or the above will work. I have had bad luck with other knock offs as have others on this forum....
Sean
sean_w_smith 12-14-06, 01:01 AM Could you explain a little more about this.
The xbox GPU can display at 480i - 1080i no problems...
There are plenty of 720P and a few 1080i games for original xbox...
Xbox is a PC basically with 700Mhz processor and 64M of ram....
When you play video the simply the video needs to be
1. decoded (Mpeg2, etc -> RAw Video)
2. Then scaled to the proper size of the screen
The Xbox has no Hardware CODECs...
so when you try to play a HD Video
It doesn't have a fast enough CPU to do #1....
So the GUI and Videos can use high res but if the source material is too complex the decoding of the compressed video stream will run slower than 30 frames a second and looks like cr^&
you can read plenty more here...
Look at the chart at the bottom.....

i believe there are two versions. with my MS pack, I only need the toslink cable. it already came with left and right composite audio and component video cables already attached.

Umm, I guess folks missed this post - XGL400 is the model number given on EBAY for the Monster Cable HD pack. I got 3 of them for $15 shipped. When I looked up XGL400 on Amazon the hit I got was $44 - I admit I didn't see the sidebar with a seriously lower price. I know I'll need a TOS cable, I hadn't heard that these were proprietary - if that's truly the case this will likely be the last Monster product I buy as that's just really crappy of them. I could perhaps build a COAX output into the box to get around the optical, connectors for it are easy enough to get and I'll bet I'm not the first :)
The box with the switch on the side is what I have - switch goes from component to S-video and the link I provided is probably what other's have seen too. If nothing it might provide me a source for a cable and or maybe connector only if the cable is truly crap. Perhaps modifying it for standard cables would be worthwhile? We'll see how the EBAY Monster stuff works out first before I expend any effort.

Just to second this, I have had great success at getting original MS HD component packs used at both Gamestop and EB Games. One set I even scored for $2.99, they were labeled as standard composite, hehe. I have never paid over $8.99 for them.
I use the Monster cables for my Xboxes. The optical cable itself is not proprietary, but the Lightwave 100X pack includes the adapter you need to connect to the XGL400. The Monster HD pack has a 1/8 mini jack on the head that you plug the adapter into. Plus it has a 10 foot toslink cable, so it matches the video cable length.
Here's a link to a site that shows the adapter (kind of) - just scroll down to the Lightwave 100x
http://www.ramelectronics.net/html/Monster-Xbox.html
I found the 100X toslink cables on closeout several months ago for $5. Just look around -

Ah okay, that makes more sense. What is the 1/8th jack for exactly? I see the 100X on EBAY for $10 apiece with no bundles up for grabs. that price barely beats out a monoprice cable of about the same length and is probabymuch better in that it'll look right (lol). I'll wait to figure this out until after I've gotten the Monster packs I ordered. The ones I'm giving away for Christmas will go out with SD AV packs since neither of the parties getting them has an HD TV yet so there's not a big rush, I've got a short TOS cable I can use for now too. Appreciate the info!
Edit: I'm rereading your post more carefully... Looks like Monster put a 1/8th inch jack on the XGL that the Lightwave setup uses to get to the optical? Nice of them to lock us into buying their TOS cable - sheesh! I'll confirm this when I get it since I'm still a touch fuzzy but I think I've got it right now - grr. Have to lookup how hard it is to simply solder a coax out the back of the XBOX :-)
Okay, got the Monster cables lightning fast, nice cables too! As mentioned no TOS, just a 1/8th jack for their proprietary TOS adapter. Reading this -> http://www.xbox-scene.com/articles/digital-output.php I think I might just build my own coax jack since it's only a coulple of connections but it would then be hardwired for the coax I think. I actually half wonder if this little 1/8th jack on the Monster cable is coax and their TOS cable simply a converter of sorts. anyone got any clues as to what the 1/8th jack outputs? Standard 2 conductor jack? Might have to try Ohming it out when I've got some time. I'd appreciate any additional info on the device that plugs into these things for optical output...
Thanks!

So is your video right now?
There is lots of info on xbox scene on creating your own digitial audio. I am more pressed for time than money and 15$ for a 10ft toslink is not ridiculous but you certainly can build your own. NEver seen any how to's for the monster only the MS pack...
Sean
As it stands now yes the Monster cables will be my video - they're pretty nice cables and cost me $5 apiece for 3 of them. I've nto yet hooked them up, will do that in a few moments but without sound I'll still be grouchy :-P
Now the issue is how to best get sound, 5.1 sound. $15 isn't bad, now multiply it by three - it's a little more money. It also burns me that Monster didn't just put a standard TOS output on the connector - even the cheap POS knockoff I got off of EBAY had that! No, Monster put in a solution that they knew darned well would require you to buy still MORE of their stuff. I mean really who does HD and not surround sound? If I'm lucky a short pigtal from a 1/8th connector to an RCA jack will be all I need, worse comes to worse I spend $1 on a connector and some spare wires to solder on a standard connection. This is almost as much about me being ticked at Monster for designing it to use their stuff as it is anything else. That and I prefer coax over optical for short runs like this if I can help it. I have fewer optical inputs than I do coax as it is plus I've had the "pleasure" of breaking a TOS cable, no I don't know how <sigh>
Update: Tried the cables and YES I have HD. However if I enable resolution over 720P nothing wants to play, I guess it's a bit too much for the hardware. 720P is sharp as a tack though and yes some of what I have "acquired" at about 680megs an hour looks GOOD. Happy as a clam with that, just need sound ;-)
sean_w_smith 12-18-06, 08:59 PM look at it this way...
The MS Pack retailed for $50 (I paid $45) and it didn't include compoent or a toslink cable... I think the monster is personally a good deal...

giddy169 12-20-06, 08:10 PM I have been using a modded xbox with xbmc for a long time but never bought the hd pack. This is probably a stupid question but if I was to buy the monster component cables would I be able to upscale my normal dvds to 720p or 1080i without copying them to my hard drive? From what I read in this thread it is it can definetly upscale it if I am playing it over my network or from my hdd but I am not sure if it can do it directly? I am thinking about getting the 360 also so I am not sure if I should just wait and play my dvd's through that?
chazanova 12-20-06, 10:16 PM I picked up a hd pac (non Ms) off of e-bay for 6.99 + ship looks just like ms product except it has box on the one side not x box ,hd component, reg audio and tos- link works just fine . Also a BIG THANK YOU to Ja Phule for turning me on to this my first box is up and running, xecuter3 soderless . :D

Yes it will upscale straight from disc. I think the beauty if XBMC is its versatility. If you want optimum DVD playback by a Oppo or a Toshiba HD-DVD player (evidently consensus seems the toshiba HD-DVD is the best upscaling DVD available at the moment). I can personally tell you the oppo is excellent.. Especially for the price...

sQwErTy 12-23-06, 02:57 AM Picked up a refurb Xbox from a local Gamestop this week for $110. Not bad I guess. To my disappointment they did not have any MCE remotes for my new Xbox. I do not like the small remote, no volume control and it's just too small. I really like my MCE remote and I'm shuffling it back and forth from the bedroom to the living room for the time being.
Anybody know where to get one of these, or know a list of Xbox1 compatible remotes that are similar to the MCE remote? I got mine from an Amazon storefront long ago and I can't find any on-line retailers that carry them in stock. eBay is selling them for $50 and more, that's crazy!
On a side note....XBMC is the best thing I ever stumbled across! Thanks to all yall for the information on this beautiful process of getting it up and running.

2006-12-15 7368 changed: force calls to mplayer to align the stack to 16 byte boundary on function call. added: helper defines to make aligned function calls using dllloader GCC compiled dlls assumes stack is aligned on function entry, it will only ensure that the alignment is kept when going deeper, but this will be wrong if the caller is non gcc based. This misalignment will result in worse performance for mmx based rutines that uses variables on stack, and segfaults for sse based ones (no segfaults in current mplayer/libavcodec as I know of). Thus this change may increase performance for codecs wich are heavly mmx optimized.

Is this is the remote you want?
MCE Remote (http://www.xpcgear.com/xpremote.html)
Can someone please point me in the right direction? I Have an orginal 1.0 Xbox and just got the Duo X2GS Mod chip in the mail and it is now installed and the Xbox seems to boot to the Duo just fine. The box had a bad HD so I have a new one to install... (here is the point thing.) How Do I "image" the HD or get it bootable and ready for my streaming server?
Please Help (or point to a link - I can read and study) I just find bits a pieces of info and I'm sure when it's all together it will make sense, but right now I'm really confused!
Thanks,
Sheldon
kupermanp,
That remote *looks* like the one adi is looking for, but it isn't. That's a regular MCE remote. For reaons that are somewhat inexplicable, MS decided to reuse the regular DVD remote dongle for the XBOX version of the MCE remote. Unfortunately, because they did that, it means you can't just use any MCE remote with the XBOX. It literally has to be the one that was designed for the XBOX, which is no longer being sold.
I have found the XBOX MCE remote used at Gamestop before. You can also try EBAY. A good bet (if you can't find it) might be a very nice universal remote. You can actually program in custom remote codes in XBMC's keymap XML file. The XBOX generally understands RCA DVD remote codes, so basic playback functions are covered. There is a debug mode where XBMC will briefly display the remote code pressed on the screen. You could program XBMC to respond to the volume/power/mute controls on the remote this way.

You need to download Auto Installer Deluxe 3.X....
you can then create an iso for CD or DVD
boot that and the installer will auto recognize an empty hard drive and partition it, format it and install software on it and your done...

Ja Phule 12-29-06, 01:12 AM I bought the MCE remote in order to use it to program my universal remote. I'd recommend as an alternative, to get a MCE centric Harmony remote, you should be able to find the xbox mce remote commands from the harmony site and program the harmony remote however you want.

I love the look of the new list view. Having thumbnails with the way the list view use to be was completely worthless. Now you can actually see them.

Wow, this is sure hard!
I downloaded auto-installer and after making many different DVD's and CD-R's using decrypter & even tried Nero the Xbox just comes up with "please insert CD and press button A" after reading the instructions many times I noticed it said "boots on modded or soft-modded xbox... Install a different bios.... your mod chip should come with instructions on how to do this... BIOS images are included in AID 3.1
Also some Xbox DVD drives don't read burned media well at all.....
Sean
Which Bios should I load? I really only want to stream Dvix movies and maybe play an Xbox game or two. Nothting fancy, just a new bigger drive, (old one is dead) and the above!
Thanks
Sheldon
The DuoX 2 (Cromwell) says I need a 512KB (2x256KB) a m8+ bios or the Xecuter 4983 bios
The downloads on the AID 3.1 has two folders one BIOS and one BIOS CDs. The BIOS folder has what looks like several (many) possibilities including: (this is only a few of the ones listed)
X2.4983.06.BIN
X2.4983.67.BIN
EVOX.M8PLUS.16.BIN
EVOX.M8PLUS.BIN
EVOX.M8PLUS.16.FC.137.BIN
Under the BIOS CDs area there are none with "4983" but some close like:
512K.x2.4981.06.fc.ef.rar
and several varients of this.
I've repaired PC's for a living for many years so if i can just get pointed to the right info I know I can do this but it's frustrating as there is so much data out there but little that describes the differences in the BIOS, or any of this stuff. I hate to give up so maybe someone else has gone through this and can help.
Thanks,
Sheldon
Ja Phule 12-30-06, 01:16 PM As Sean mentioned, I think the main issue here is your dvdr media that you are using. Do you know what dvdrom drive your xbox is using? I have the samsung drive on my xbox and it reads verbatim dvd+r fine (but not dvd+r dl). I haven't got a cdr to work on it yet, but I did get a cdrw working a long time ago.
The DVD drive is a Thomson and I have tried CD-RW, CD-R, DVD-R, and DVD+R with the same results. I have a version 1.6 (not modified) and poped the disks into it but got an error saying to try another Disk. That all said, the Auto-Installer V3.10 says on page 5 that I must use a "proper BIOS - NOT cromwell/Linus"
It's like there is no system tracks on the disks, so maybe I will have to Flash the BIOS which is no big deal on PC's but I want to make sure I got the right one.
Thanks for the help, I really do appreciate it! If I could just get the new drive in and it booting I could just buy the MS MCE kit for Xbox and be done, but alas, I need a HD for that!
Thanks,
Sheldon
Okay, new update, I pulled the working Samsung SDG-605F drive from the other Xbox 1.6 and plugged it into the Modded 1.0 Xbox with the same results. So the BIOS is probably the problem.
Can I clone the ST310014ACE HD in the 1.6 xbox onto the 200 GB ST3200820A and get running that way??
Any tips on Flashing the BIOS, w/o any input, I've decied to try the 4983.
Thanks
ChrisFB 12-30-06, 09:51 PM csu, I feel for you. This is the worst spot to be at since you have no idea if it's the media or not. At least you know the chip is in right.
Have you tried www.xbox-scene.com. Here is the specific sub-forum for your mod chip: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showforum=181
It's been so long since I've done anything bios/modchip related that I haven't even heard of your chip. The real key is in creating the proper disc to flash the hacked bios (Xecuter2 4983.06 should be the on to go with) onto the mod chip.
I'd look into the burning procedures for the bios flash disc. Maybe it needs to be in XISO format or something. Sometimes you need some fluff files in there to give it some size since the bios file is so small (can be hard to read if there is only a tiny fragment of info on the disc).
I'd really look to that forum I linked you and spend some time (I bet the search function is still shot there though). Just look for posts and threads like yours.
Hope that helps.
EDIT:
Here's a thread discussing Bioses (the head moderator is the one giving advice so take it, sounds like you need a 512k bios) http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=574345
If you don't know how to FTP into Xbins, there's a tutorial for that too on the Xbox-Scene main page, you'll also need an IRC chat client.
Other threads I picked out on the first page alone which are people going through flash issues:

Thanks for your help. I'm out of the fire but into the frying pan as they say.
The DuoX 2 GS is a 1GB bios (2x512) and NOT a 512 (2x256) like all of my documentation says. Next, the small switch on the Duo Card needs to be flipped to the Flash Bios mode as it can't read the disks to use the standard flash programs (Like \eurAsia Pro Generic Flash) Even though the documentations says that is what you should do. Once the Bios Flash reads the 1GB flash your home free...Kind-of. (also, it now reads ALL the media I had made earlier - lots of 'test disks') Now it formatted the hard disk and all works well. So I loaded the XBMC add on and now I get an error:
XBMC Fatal Error:
T:\guisettings.xml, Line:
Error document empty
Network cable unplugged
unable to init network, retraying in X seconds
So I plugged in the network cable which just goes to my small three PC network (no Router or DHCP) and The error now says:
XBMC Fatal Error:
T:\guisettings.xml, Line:
Error document empty
IP Address:
Starting FTP Server.....
FTP server running on port 21, login: xbox/xbox
press any button to reboot.
So Has anyone seen this?
ChrisFB 12-31-06, 12:49 AM This is easier to fix. It's an issue with the GUI Settings (graphical user interface) so the configuration file which is the XML has an issue on it. Not sure where you got it or whether it became corrupt but I'd redownload from Xbins (I think 2.01 Final is the most recent stable release but I'm still using 2.0 right now). As long as you have FTP access (either through the crashed XBMC, another dash, or a boot disc with dash and FTP server on there) you can just delete XBMC and then transfer over a new copy.
Either way, something is wrong with the XML so either something went from in transfering it over or there is an error in the guisettings.xml file (corrupt or something, if you are familiar with xml you can open it on your PC and see if it's a simple error or edit issue).

I'm back after some travelling. Glad to see you made progress. By now I'm sure you have XBMC running and hopefully are having fun with it. your last issue sounds like a bad install of XBMC. hopefully your past that...

Thanks again for all your help. I "can see light at the end of the tunnel" as they say! (I hope it's not a train!) I had to reprep the HD's as the SBMC filled the "C" partition and I think that is why it failed. On the second install I moved it to the "E" partition which is the largest drive. Now it boots but the only way to launch the XBMC desktop is to "open containing folders" and navigate to the "E" drive and click on the XBMX XML. So, I'm getting close. I need to remember the Unix I learned 30 years ago! Is there an easier way to set the default desktop? Also when the DIVX starts to play I have no control (on the XBOX controller) to stop, pause, fast forward, or anything except to shut down or open the CD drive. I may need to get the Media Center Remote option. I'll see.
Thanks again for your help!

Hi Sheldon...
The C Drive is for the MS Dash only... don't put anything else on C...
generally people install XBMC in e:\apps or f:\apps
you can't run XML files they are text. you run a .xbe which is like a .exe on your PC....
The xbox controller provides tons of support for fast forward rewind etc... I suggest you read the docs....
The default desktop you refer to in Xbox terms is called a dashboard... Chances are your dash board now is EvoX, or unleashX, or Avalaunch....
generally most bioses boot a file called e:\evoxdash.xbe
so you first need to understand what file your BIOS boots...
then follow the instructions here to create an shortcut file that will then launch XBMC...

FYI...Make sure only upload the version that says "proper" in the name... Apparently there was a misspelling in one of the lines of code that caused everyones XBox to boot to the black screen. It has been fixed and replaced on his website.

I think you mean a "point" release. CVS and SVN are just different methods of updating and distribution of the XBMC code. They switched from CVS to SVN a few months ago.
And yes, it seems that there has been some sloppy coding as of late and I have decided to sit on my working version until we see a more stable solution.
I read parts of this thread, but realized the begining was about a year ago. I have a hacked xbox sitting around ready to use. I already have DVDProfiler and use it with my current htpc. I understand exporting the .xml, etc. The xbox would be more convient for my current video distribution system if I can get it to work. All of my DVDs are ripped with just the main movie into a folder containing VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS. Inside that is the .bup, .ifo and the .vobs. I use zoomplayer and point it to the first .bup file I believe. Does the xbox not see these files? Is the iso conversion still needed? Is streaming the video from a central server possible?
Sorry for all of the questions. I had no idea xbmc could look so damn good! It's come a long way since I first hacked my xbox.
Scotty6595 01-11-07, 06:01 PM Yes it will see all of those files in your folder and should play them with no problems at all. ISO is really just for packaging purposes... Absolutely video can be streamed from a central server! I would suggest down loading the 2.01 build as it is the most stable. The FAT has lots of extras that I personally do not use but you may find interesting. Go to the site that I linked in post #1430.
Have fun!
Thanks for the quick reply and NEW website. I may have lots more questions as I undertake this project. Does the 2.01 build come with a good skin that works well with a hdtv and movies? I guess I don't understand exactly how DVDProfiler2XBMC points to a movie folder when it is selected. Is that done through XBMC or does DVDProfiler2XBMC do that? On my htpc I had to go in and browse to the .bup and select it. Then when the movie was selected and played the entire movie would play. I understand the other stuff.
Scotty6595 01-11-07, 06:36 PM Actually within XBMC all you have to do is go to "videos" point to a source and book mark the shared folder/drive where your movies are located. Once you have done this you can perform an Imdb lookup for all the movies on your share, this will give you movie info and DVD cover art for each movie. Next you simply select the movie you want to watch by navigating to the DVD cover art and clicking the green button on your controller. I believe that XBMC recognizes the files within your folder and automatically starts your movie.
I have all my movies backedup in .ISO format so I'm not sure if it works the same way. Maybe someone here can add to or correct any mis information I may have given you..lol
As a matter of fact you have me curious now, I am going to rip a DVD and save it to a folder and see how it works. I'll report back in a bit.
Thanks for doing that! I think I point to the first .bup titled VIDEO_TS.bup and then the whole movie plays. Is DVD Profile and the DVDProfiler2XBMC script even needed? What about the skin question? Which one do you use? Thanks again. I'll be checking back in a bit.
Scotty6595 01-11-07, 07:09 PM Well it works perfectly! I simply copied over the files to a folder called Shrek_2 and when I first navigated to it, it actually showed up as a folder. I then used the "stack" option which basically just ties all the similar file types together and then tried to play the movie by clicking on the .bup file... My xbox locked up... so after I rebooted I went back into videos and low and behold XBMC recognized the Shrek 2 folder as a video file and all I had to do is click on the folder and it automatically started the movie. No file navigation required inside the video folder... (this program amazes me all the time...lol) So you should be good to go with your current movies ripped to VOB's in separate folders... by the way the DVD cover art lookup worked like a charm as well!
I really like the PM3 skin, it looks very elegant and professionial but there are some very promising skins in the pipeline that I am very excited about. Clariaty and Kaleidescape are the skins I am waiting for....
Thanks. So, I simply point to the "Shrek" main folder which contained the video_ts and audio_ts folders? Sounds easy. I need to install the latest xbmc and will try out the pm3 skin. Is the PM3 skin a separate download or is it with the 2.01 release? Is there an option to make xmbc my default dash? I haven't done this in a LONG time. I'm going to have to read up over at the xbox scene I guess.
Scotty6595 01-11-07, 07:49 PM The PM3 skin is the default skin that always comes packaged with the XBMC builds... Yes there is an option to make XBMC your default dash but you will have to read up on how to do this for your particular set up...
By the way, if you get the FAT version it has several skins packaged into it for you to try out...
Oh another thing, within the XBMC build is a text file that may help you with setting it up to be your dash...
Good luck!
I hope to get to set this up this weekend. I guess everyone is recommending finding the original HD pack for xbox from a gamestop or other store? What do I need to look for. Also need recommendations for a remote? I will use a programmable/universal remote, but need to know what to have to start with for the xbox.
Want to know the reason I am doing this? I have an expensive htpc that cannot display a resolution that my various hdtvs will support through a video switcher. My $100 xbox can do it though!

DVDProfiler2XBMC is only needed if you want to get the actual DVD cover art and dummy video files so you can browse your dvd list. I've got over 500 movies but don't have the time and money needed to put them all on the server.
Good to see you've gone the XBMC route. Another way to play a dvd folder is to hover over the main movie directory and press the white button and select play (or play button if you have the remote) and the DVD should start playing.

If you can get your hands on the xbox media center extender kit, it comes with a nice media center remote that works well with xbmc. I got this kit and used its remote to program my universal remote. The xbox dvd remote would also work. I'd also recommend the harmony remotes, as you can access the xbox dvd remote commands (and xbox media center remote commands) using their online set up and program your remote that way.

Two things, the real ORIGINAL HD Pack from Microsoft with the breakout box is not a great choice. You can attach your own cables (the ones included were horrible) and this is a nice advantage but the breakout box was of significantly poor quality that even using high end ($1K+) cables still produced a lesser picture than the alternative Monster cables (x400 I think). Microsoft later changed the design to an all-in one unit with decent cables and it performs fine (this is a good choice). If you go the Monster route you'll also need to buy their x100 optical cable for the adapter.
Note - I am not some kind of cable freak, I don't give high end cable advise or cater to Monster. A lot of tests were done on the cabling and what it comes down to is that the original breakout box was so bad along with the original cables that one could easily see the difference. Even when swapping the cables the breakout box prevented a good passthrough.
So either go with the MSFT HD cables that are built into the unit or go with the Monster offering (both are equal). Do not go breakout box and don't go Ebay 3rd party crap. These are the only offerings available as the Xbox has a proprietary adapter and only with a VERY DIFFICULT hardware mod can you create your own component outputs.
For remotes the standard Xbox DVD controller uses RCA codes. I don't have the Media Extender remote but it's supposed to work well.
Also, if you want to turn your Xbox on/off with the remote, you can use this add-on: http://cheaplpc.com/xir/. The only issue is that you may have to do some keymap changes in XBMC as it uses the 0 key to turn off the system. Generally not a big deal and I find it rarely comes into play.
Thanks for the information. I will check into all of the remote and cable stuff. I have made some progress. I got xbmc installed and seeing my shared videos on the network and even looked up the movie info, etc.. I have a couple of questions. The cover art seems blurry, is it a low res pic that is provided? The next one is a bit harder. How do I get xbmc to simply show the cover art icons without having to go to the smb share then htpc then dvds folder? I was hoping this would be wife/kid friendly in that you click videos, see the cover of the one you want, click it and then click play. Is that possible? If so how would I do it?
Thanks for all of the help.
Scotty6595 01-12-07, 11:00 PM RxMan1,
I believe you can click the white button under Videos and choose your sources. That will give XBMC a permanent pointer to your shares and they will come up when your first choose Videos. Or you can do like me and edit your sources.xml. Here is an example of what my Video section looks like in my sources.xml file.
<!-- My Videos shares !-->

DVD and DVD1 are simply the names of the shared folders on two different drives where my movies are located. Under <path> I simply input my computers local IP address followed by the folder name. If you have multiple folders you can create multiple paths. I would suggest you put all your movie folders inside 1 folder on each drive. When you open Videos it will automatically open the folder where all your DVDs are stored and the first thing you will see is DVD cover art for each movie.
If you want to go this route I will be happy to walk you through it... or for that fact I could send you a copy of my sources.xml and you can edit it with your own paths and folder names.
Once this is set up correctly your wife and kids will have no problems navigating around at all.
I sent you a PM with my email for sending the file.
ChrisFB 01-13-07, 10:38 AM The best idea, once you learn to edit the sources XML is to put in all the usual shares you use (or subfolders however you want to do it) and nix all the presets you have no use for. That way when you go to Video from the home screen you might see:
Cartoons
Movies and Film
Television Pre-2000
Television 2000-Present
Home Movies
Recent Downloads
Server Main Folder
Network Explorer
Local XBox HardDrive
Local Xbox DVD Drive
That makes it really easy. Even my wife can do it! Then I only use the network options to find stuff that isn't in a main shared folder on some odd occasion when I need it. I also keep that Workgroup option in each category so I can do this easily on any of my systems. I think there is also a way to aggregate the contents of 2 network shares to appear as a single option and folder within XBMC although I've never used it.

All my music and films are stored on the internal hard drive in the xbox is there any software that will allow me to play the files stored on my xbox on other PC's in my network
Thanks

Chris, the way I have my sources.xml set up combines my two different folders in two different drives and they appear as one in XBMC.

Ahh, was that specifying the 2 paths under a single bookmark as a few posts up? Pretty intuitive.
XBMC is such a damn great setup. It kills me that they don't have a "follow-on" console or OS yet (thinking to HD Xvid and TS). They are the best bar none.

I didn't get any time this weekend to try this out. I hope to get some time later in the week. I mentioned in a post earlier the blurry cover art images. Maybe it is my connection, but I thought these would be better. Any idea what the file size of the cover art picture is? Typically, on DVD Profiler they are around 130kb.

I don't know if this helps but "Display" on the Xbox remote is exactly the same code as "Power" or "On/Off" on RCA brand DVD remotes.
Now if you are unable to get it to take on the Harmony there might be a chance of customizing the programing of the Xir which has been a feature they've talked about some over the last few years. I'd visit their site or maybe fire off an email.
Honestly, it should work. When I set my Universal remote for RCA DVD player, the on/off works.

What is the build date of your XBMC? They have implemented hi-res DVD thumbs a few builds ago. It sounds like you have an older build, maybe 2.01? Wait for the next release of XBMC and then re-install, I am sure you will see a noticeable difference. I would recommend skipping the current version of T3CH dated Jan. 9th. It has a couple of bugs that cause IMDB look up to be a pain in the neck.
(You can't pick the first movie title on the IMDB list in a manual lookup. This has been fixed in the current SVN but won't be available until someone compiles a new build.) A new version should be out today or tomorrow if T3CH keeps to his normal schedule.
Yes, I did get 2.01 fat from the T3CH website you mentioned earlier. I will wait a day or two and see if the new release shows up. Do I need to delete my current thumbs and then run imdb again or is there another method? I'm also connected via composite for now.
TheOtherOne 01-15-07, 07:55 PM They have implemented hi-res DVD thumbs a few builds ago.I think they just upped it to a default of 192 pixels instead of 128. That will make them better, but still not as good as they could be. I set them at 256 and they look great. As far as I know it is still an option you have to set in AdvancedSettings.xml:
<thumbsize>256</thumbsize>

It was my understanding that the IMDB lookup was pulling the "lowres" dvd cover pics from the IMDB site. Thay have changed that to pull the HiRes cover art from IMDB. You may want to rescan a movie and thumb and see how it will improve your pic. There is a noticeable difference in quality from before and after this change. Fuzzy DVD covers vs. sharp clean dvd covers....

Harmony borked the 'Display' command some time ago. It worked once upon a time, but if you've downloaded an xbox remote config any time lately it no longer works. I had to resort to learning the display button, and saving on the Harmony site as 'learned display' - them remapping the desire button with the learned command.
Same wierd **** happened with one of my amp's inputs. Just stopped working when I made minor update to my setup.

I don't think there are hi-res covers available on imdb. They are only like 95x140 and with the old builds of XBMC defaulting to only 128 pixels, it was even downsizing those.
I just find my own higher resolution cover art and save them as .tbn files and then I let XBMC resize them down to 256 pixels.
Scotty6595 01-16-07, 01:06 AM Could it also have been down-rezing them as well. I know when I updated my thumbs the covers went from a washed out fuzzy cover to a very crisp and sharp cover. Whatever they did is a vast improvement over the previous thumbs for sure.
If I had my wishes I would wish that IMDB provided and option for movie posters instead of just DVD covers. I have a few movies that have the posters by default through IMDB and they look great!
ETA: I just went to IMDB and noticed that they have a nice selection of movie poster for each movie...hmm, do I want to start replacing 200 dvd cover thumbs with movie posters...(my wife is gonna kill me.. :p )
In case people don't know where it is: Look up a movie on imdb and then scroll down to "Promotional" it will be on the left side of the page. Click on "Posters".

Also can someone point me in the direction of a tut that will tell me how to map my pertinent folders such as music and movies and such. I cant seem to find any of my book marked material on XBMC. I can't confirm for any new version of the Xir Remote but it used to be "Display" on the Xbox DVD remote (or "Power" on an RCA DVD remote - they are the same) and as far as I know, without customized programing, it is still the default.

I personally alter the Sources.xml file which contains all the bookmarks (it's in the userdata folder). There is a way to do it purely through the interface but I didn't go through the hassle of figuring it out. I just delete what I don't need, rename things to my liking, and add all my network SMB shares. They have examples of each kind of share so just use that as a template.
2.01 was the last final build. Everything newer is just point in time work in progress beta which can vary between essentially perfect to quite broken. Stick with finals for now and hopefully they will release new final builds with shorter periods than between 1.1 and 2.0 (more than a year and HUGE changes).

OK. I got that working. Had to unplug all controllers and have just it plugged in. Now, I can't get an IP address with xbmc. Haven't had problems with other dashes. Must be in the settings some where.
OK. Got that working. I love talking to myself. :)
I've had a bit of success. I now have 3 questions.
1. Is it possible to go straight from the My Videos to the movie list with icons? Right now I have to select one folder and then they all come up.
2. How do I click on a thumb and get that 2nd screen with the thumb and movie information to come up? I see it when I get the info from IMDB but haven't figured out how to access it. Then from there I want to hit play and go.
3. Which button on the xbox media extender remote equals the white button on the controller?
Thanks a bunch for all of the help. I am definitely close now and I REALLY like it.

You can customize your button functions in XBMC, I've looked into it but it gets complicated.

Scotty6595 01-18-07, 02:09 PM I've been using this for a week or so and I have to say this skin will usher in a new breed of skins geared towards the Home Theater crowd versus the gamer crowd. The GUI is simply stunning!
Keep an eye out for the new Vista MC skin, Kaleidescape skin and BlackBolts new eX skin.
BTW: Movie database has been completely overhauled in the latest release! Unless your ready to perform a complete rescan of your db, beware. If you do choose to update you now have to name the content type for your folder/s where your movies are stored. You do this through the white button context menu when highlighting your shared folders. You only have to do this for movies, not music or pictures. I'm not a big fan of this change as it makes things extremely difficult to update or correct fubar'd imdb lookups for individual movies. I have been talking to Spiff (one of the dev's) about this and hopefully this will get worked out soon.
Remember, if you choose not to update you will not be able to use much of the new functionality of the new skin above.
emillika 01-18-07, 02:14 PM Anyone in Chicago (prefer west or northwest suburbs) willing/able to mod my xbox to run XBMC?
jwheeler 01-18-07, 04:33 PM Wondering if someone here might shed some light on a problem I am having. When transferring the latest builds to my xbox from my computer via flashfxp I keep getting pop up's from my Norton antivirus telling me it is blocking intrusion attempts from various trojans. Does anyone know whats happening here? Where would these trojans come from or is it miss-interpreting some files as trojans? Thanks for any help.
Scotty6595 01-18-07, 06:16 PM That is really weird... I have never seen anyone post an issue like that.
First question I would as is where did you get your release from? xbins? The T3CH web site? Torrent download? The second question is can you see a log of what these trojans are? If you could see the file names you can determine if they are actually in XBMC.

I got the release from T3CH web site but in the past at Xbins. It has really always done this and It lists each time a different trojan with its name. Its almost like I when I am using FlashFXP that someone or something can see the connection and then tries to take advantage of the opening. But then again it could be Norton screwing up. It really bugs me because I have to sit here while I do my file transfer because it will halt when norton detects something. I never get any trojan alerts except from this program and never seem to end up getting one. Its just really weird.
Scotty6595 01-18-07, 06:55 PM I think it is Norton monitoring specific ports that FlashXP is using. You could find out what ports FXP is using and "allow" them in Norton or you could do what I would do and turn norton off during file transfers...lol
I know, not much help... but hey, it would work..lol
jwheeler 01-18-07, 07:02 PM I've been using this for a week or so and I have to say this skin will usher in a new breed of skins geared towards the Home Theater crowd versus the gamer crowd.
Remember, if you choose not to update you will not be able to use much of the new functionality of the new skin above.
where do you get the Clarity skin? I searched the XBMC forum but came up with nada.

I thought about disabling the worm protection but I didnt know if these were really worms trying to get in. Might just keep doing what I have been just to be safe. Thanks.
rrr22777 01-18-07, 07:13 PM I wish to use an Xbox only to steam vidoes to my TV. Dont need the gaming functionality. Anyplace online that sells already modded xboxes?

You have to get it from the SVN site... Here is how....
Download this program: TortoiseSVN
Install program:
Create an empty folder on your desktop and call it Clarity
Right click on the folder and you will notice that in the box that pops up you now have an option for SVN Checkout. Click on checkout and another box opens up. Put this address into the field called URL of repository.
https://svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/xboxmediacenter/Clearity/
Then point to the empty folder you created for the Checkout folder. Click ok and it will download the skin.
Once the download is complete you need to go in to the clearity folder on your desktop and click the build.bat file. That will compile the skin and place it into a folder called Build. The folder you need to ftp over to your box will reside in this Build folder.
For update on the skin just right click the Clearity folder and click the SVN Update option and do the build.bat thing again....
Hope this helps! Your going to love the skin!

Google is your friend...
Ja Phule 01-18-07, 11:57 PM Do I need to update to the latest SVNs to use clarity? If so, which version is crashes the least using Clarity? I'm still using 2.0.1 for now....
Scotty6595 01-19-07, 12:10 AM Yes, most of the skin engine changes that allow all these great skins have just taken place over the last week or so. Get the latest T3CH build and you should be fine. If there is a Pimped version out that has a date after the 16th of Jan. you may want to try it. They are adding functionality at a fast and furious pace to try and keep up with these skinners.
Make sure and read my post about the database changes before you nuke you 2.0.1 build. You could do what I do and run a 2.0.1 build and the latest SVN. I just feel safer have a nice stable build for my wife and kids to use....lol

Does anyone knows where I can find somebody to hard mod my x box? I live in ct
RockDawg 01-19-07, 08:59 PM If all you want to do is run XBMC, you don't need to put a chip in the Xbox. You can softmod it easily with the right game. Check these out:
http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=215055
Most people that can put a hard drive in a computer can put a mod chip in an xbox. Just get the Xecuter3 with the no-solder adapter. It's about $20 more than getting just the chip, but it's far easier. We modded my brother's xbox using solder last May and it took us around an hour to get it soldered in properly, and he's got soldering experience. I just modded mine about a month ago using the solderless adapter and it only took me about 20 minutes. When you purchase it you'll get detailed guides on how to install it. It's honestly really simple as long as you follow the instructions and buy a Torx screwdriver set ($5-10 at a hardware store).
I loaded rev7667 and Clarity on my xbox and noticed that I couldn't scan IMDB, so I have loaded XBMC 2.0.1 Final Fat in order to build my libraries. I was able to build my video library, but when I build the music library it scans, looks like it completes but when I try to access an album/artist, etc. under music library, it states that "Remote Share - Path not found or invalid". When I switch this view to "file" I can access and play my music.
Can anyone help with this one? Not sure what to search for or where to look. Searches at xbox-scene didn't turn up anything.
bboy123 01-22-07, 06:53 PM could be broken link to the cddb in .xml is the music directory networked or local on the xbox? The bad thing about a lot of the good features of xbmc is that when any changes are made it renders those features useless. I.E. movie trailors, youtube, imdb lookup, and many others.
